I am not a fan of Prince overall, but this album is just fantastic. It's still an album I regularly listen to when I have to drive around town on a nice day.
Prince is not someone I would listen to. However, there is no denying that I enjoy a few songs on this album. Let's Go Crazy standing out. It's still a good song 40 years later. Little Nikki is a Prince song? I had no idea. It's not super great song, but the remake certainly has had some radio play. Also, the title song is not good :D
Let’s Go Crazy and Purple Rain are obviously great but the rest of the album is a little too packed with cheesy 80’s-feeling music. 3.5.

I like 55% of the album. At first I was feeling like the music was dated and that I wasn’t feeling it because I didn’t grow up listening to it. However, from listening more than once, I found myself liking it more. 3/5
I know this is supposed to be a ground-breaking album. But....I just don't care for highly synthesized music. It is easy to tell which cuts ended up being the best known. They stand out on this album.

I had heard of Purple Rain and Prince...because I live on this planet, but i had *never* listened to the album and I think I only knew one song (When Doves Cry). Super enjoyable.
Prince at his most maximalist – an album that throws everything at the wall and manages to stick quite a bit. While a good number of these tracks have been ruined for me by radio overplay, there's no denying the sheer personality and presence Prince injects into each song, leading to a listening experience that zig-zags constantly but still manages to sound shockingly coherent.
Finally, '80s rock that actually works.

I mean. What is there to say about one of the greatest cinematic soundtracks of all time? Sexy, sultry and just too cool. Prince compiles a wonderful collection of tunes here. An obvious recommendation.
A slightly less-horny Prince that the first album I received, but he's still there. The man was crazy in the right ways and can just... write a banger of a tune. You can see that brilliance when he starts a song giving a gospel-style sermon about life and ending with a guitar solo so awesome, I'd be amazed if his guitar didn't spontaneously catch fire. Favorite tracks: "I Would Die 4 U", "Purple Rain", "When Doves Cry"

Prince is zo'n artiest die door de snobs wordt gezien als een van de beste muzikanten aller tijden. Lekker 150 euro voor betalen op North Sea Jazz om daarna te kunnen vertellen aan iedereen dat je erbij was. Ik vind het zwaar overschat allemaal. De hitjes zijn wel aardig, maar verder is het bombastische aanstellerij.
This is an album that I've always been curious about. I've never listened to one of Prince's albums, but I have tremendous respect for his abilities as an artist. This album shows off those abilities well. The album is cinematic, which is certainly appropriate, and all of the songs are good. There's a good mix between upbeat poppy songs and more somber ones 4/5
Some decent funky pop. I didn't care too much about some of the first songs, it seems to get better and better towards the end of the album though. The last four songs are great in my opinion. Despite being one of Prince's biggest songs, I'd never given the title track a proper listen in full, but it proved to be an amazing power ballad that was just a great journey for nearly nine minutes. Favourite: Purple Rain

I made it through a whole Prince album. Prince has never been my thing, but I can appreciate his talent and I understand why other people are into him. He wrote some catchy tunes, just not to my taste.
After you subtract the monster hit singles that everyone can sing in their sleep, there's only four tracks left. They are all pretty good. Why only four stars? I don't think it is anything like his best album and what do I give Sign O The Times then? 4.5 if they did halves.
I’m missing something here. It’s fine, probably good, but I can not hear what all the fuss is about. I’d maybe give it a 4 but I’m knocking down to a 3 for everyone who wrote “It’s Prince - what can I say” Say something mate, coz I need a clue back here.

The thing I love about this album is that, like the best movies, it's a world you're just plunged into. Prince doesn't care if you know nothing about it and don't understand the rules, he just gets on with it. It's playful and silly, an utterly charismatic blend of genres. I think I finally get Prince.

I remember listening to this when it first came out and I thought it was the most overblown histrionic hyperbolic music. Ask me now and no question that there are some absolute classics on this album but there are also some filler tracks which don’t feel as complete or dramatic. I do love most of this album now. It has grown in stature for me over the years and no doubt it’s an absolute blinder. However there are a couple of tracks I could absolutely gloss over and I don’t need to hear them again. But that doesn’t detract from Prince’s extraordinary talent.
I don't have to listen to this album to know it's a five star album. This is a great soundtrack to a great musicians movie.
From the first sound of the organ/synth to the last note of Purple Rain, it was a wonderful journey!
What a brilliant freaking album. Iconic pop from the '80s but wholly unconventional. Fantastic blend of guitar and synths. Great mix of male and female contributors. Every song is interesting. Portrait of a profoundly gifted musician at an artistic apex, fearless, free, just overflowing with talent and songcraft and studiocraft and it all comes to a fine point on this album. And while this is really the first time the Revolution gets in into the mix, Prince orchestrates every note — and it's all for the good. It's almost cliché to love this album, but that doesn't make it any less amazing. I always appreciated the flow of this album, from the party-time opener to the strange drum-driven intro of "Take Me With U" to the "Beautiful Ones," which is a beautiful track, to the odd "Computer Blue" that goes on its own unpredictable journey. I really enjoyed "Darling Nikki" on this listen, more than I expected, and it struck me that "When Doves Cry" must be among the songs I've heard most in my life — like all-time number of times I've heard that song — and damned if I wasn't keying in on things for the first time. There's a guitar line that's moving underneath, and I love the extended version (as opposed to the single version). And somehow, "Purple Rain" might be my least favorite song ("Baby I'm A Star" was always one of my faves) in this mix, and yet it's like the best song ever when Prince played it at the Super Bowl. Oh man, I wish I loved Prince. Few people have ever been as supremely talented as this dude. But his studio albums have always left me cold, thanks to that sterile '80s production. I just can't get over it. The drums and that keyboard just zap all of the soul out of the songs. For me. I love watching live Prince. But studio Prince, I just can't hack it. My loss.
Amazing how your life can change in just 43 min and 59 sec. This album changed a lot of things in high school. Me and my friends loved it but everyone did in my terribly trashy and racist school. When Let's Go Crazy hit at a basketball game or dance, we ALL got down. Peace through superior groove all thanks to the first rock star who stirred many a pulsing drive in my body that I hadn't felt before. (a'hem...well we can't talk Purple Rain without a nod to his sex factor!) Woah...I just learned today that the gibberish at the end of Darling Nikki was backwards! Those guitar notes at the beginning of When Doves Cry! I think this song, track 6, is my favorite on the album and all-time Prince fav. I got to see him on this tour at the Spectrum in Philadelphia November 1984. Sidenote: you can look up concert tours in Wikipedia and it provides revenue numbers. 3 days in Philly = $848,075, which is about $2,433,975 today. Ending the album with Purple Rain...those violins, the drums, him singing in my ear. This listen brought me to tears. Friends - I left the group chat yesterday because I was too deep in my listening groove. I still love you (even if Scott mistakenly rates this wrong).
This album is so good. It has so much of what people like to parody Prince for, but done so god damn well. I challenge anyone to listen to Baby I'm a Star and not shake their ass. 4/5
This was fun, but I've never really connected w/ Prince for some reason. I didn't dislike it, but I can tell it's not something I'd go back to much. 3/5
Like Bowie, Prince is one of those artists who I can’t imagine being unimpressed with at any point of time. The way he brings so many styles of music together- pop, rock, R&B, new wave, doo wop, even touches of metal and country- as seamlessly and synthetic as possible makes sure this album never stops vibing. And when you think you know what’s coming next, he comes up with a hook that blows you away. The movie is mid though. There are very few albums that I think deserve an A+. This is one of them.

Alright probs wouldn’t listen to again
This album review process is an interesting experience. Listening to this gave me pause as the only Prince records I own are singles: Raspberry Beret (perfection), a 12 inch of Cream and Sexy M-Fucker (which I bought in Melbourne airport while bored..). And yet...I once owned not one but three Supertramp albums, go figure. And so, after that tedious self reflection, what's that all mean for Purple Rain? In 1984 I think I was too busy thinking about Green on Red/Guadacanal Diary et al to get into Prince. Despite the ubiquity of the smash hits emerging from this record I was too cool for the schooling that is the genius of Prince. Jesus/Krishna/Allah what a record, the Wendy and Lisa harmonies give all these tunes that vocal edge, and respect to Apollonia as well. Doves/Let's Go/I Would Die are bona fide classics, providing the template for so much of what has emerged since. Take Me With U is superb, the kick on the snare, the strings, the harmonies, perfect for hurtling down the south coast with the windows down. Alright there's a couple of fillers in there but so what, this is what pop music is all about.
This album bolts out of the blocks with Let’s Go Crazy…then falls flat on its face for the next couple of songs. What on earth was he thinking? The promise is partly fulfilled in later songs, and When Doves Cry (cranked up on our car trip home) sounds as fresh and epic as ever. I have to say, though, the title track still seems interminable to me, no matter how much I focus on enjoying particular aspects of it.
After the great 1999 album, the release of each new Prince LP was keenly awaited. This was the follow-up and it didn’t disappoint. The sheer pomp of When Doves Cry & Purple Rain & the rock & roll chops of Let’s Go Crazy was more than enough, but the other 2 singles gleaned from this, Take Me With U & I Would Die 4 U, were also classics. There was something a little embarrassing about the movie clips that were used for some of these, but, really, he could do no wrong at the time. This is the album that made him the icon that we still sorely miss.
At first, I didn’t get Prince. I was aware of the singles from this album when they were released, but I didn’t have the album, and I didn’t really understand what the fuss was. A schoolmate, Bassel, was a fan and constantly tried to convince me of Prince’s genius, but it took a while. Sorry Bassel, I got there eventually. Then, in about 1988, the penny finally dropped and I got it. Over the next couple of years, I obsessively hunted down the whole Prince back catalogue. I played his music constantly, and I still do. I saw him at the Sydney Entertainment Centre in 1992, and he tore it up live. And, except for the album he had just released at the time, this was the only album from which he played more than one song; Baby I’m A Star, Let’s Go Crazy and Purple Rain. Prince’s imperial phase of the 1980s is far and away my favourite, and this album is a monumental achievement from this period. Prince is one of only three artists to have the number one single, album and movie simultaneously. Even though the movie is pretty rubbish, Prince conquered the world with this album. It’s rock, it’s funk, it’s psychedelic, it’s pop, it’s experimental, it’s a party jam, it’s heavily emotional. It’s everything about the 80s, and also classic beyond time. It’s the first album where the Revolution really brought their influences and played (about half the album) as a band, instead of Prince doing everything himself in the studio (although there are still a few tracks like that). And the band certainly was cooking. I want to shout out the particular contributions of Wendy and Lisa to this record. Their playing, singing and arrangements really lift a lot of this material into something special. You can hear the way their arrangements push Prince’s harmony into some new spaces, which can particularly heard in the string arrangements. Big fan of their work (check out their duo records after leaving the Revolution. I am particularly partial to Fruit at the Bottom and Eroica). I think you can hear how quickly this album was recorded, and it is a bit rough around the edges, which adds to the appeal. The songs are so iconic now that weird choices (no bassline in When Doves Cry is the classic example) are now like articles of faith. This reminds me of many of the later Beatles records, where off-the-cuff choices have now become entrenched lore and people have built whole careers on their mistakes and arbitrary additions. I am listening to the deluxe version, which has a lot of super extended versions and other songs recorded contemporaneously. Many of those previously unreleased versions would have been lead singles for other artists (and in some cases were, I’m looking at you Andre Cymone). It is hard to credit how prolific he wa during this period. Is this my favourite Prince album? No, not quite. But is it a towering achievement of popular music? Absolutely. Five stars.

Not really a fan. I've always heard people saying how good Prince is, but I don't really like it. Seems like a pretty average 80s album to me.

Really good album, would listen again
This album does not have my favourite bits of Prince essence on it. I say that because I am not someone who knows all the Prince catalogue inside out by any means and I've never listened to full albums so I'm no authority on Prince. I absolutely love some tracks: Computer Blue, When Doves Cry, Purple Rain, Baby I'm a Star. BUT I don't love every part of those songs haha. Some of the more chaotic sounds are super painful to my soul and confusing to my brain, however the vocals, the less busy 80s synthy sounds, the INSANE guitar solos sing to my soul. So I'm conflicted. Love the juicy 80s-ness but find some sounds stressful. I want to give a 3.5 but I can't!

I've never been a massive Prince fan. Tried to get into him a few times but it's never clicked really. He was a phenomenal guitarist (video of him doing While My Guitar Gentle Weeps with all the famous people is insanely good) but I just don't feel that comes through on this album, except in a very small segments. I think it's all too 80s for me but I appreciate it.

So many great tracks, and I was dancing in my seat the entire time. Perfection.
I liked this a lot more than the last one — more rock less funkiness. Take me with U was a surprise favorite, but I feel like I would have enjoyed someone else’s version of it more that leaned even more into the “take me with you” and had a larger chorus centered around it — something a Madonna would have done perhaps. But also if life means forever how the fuck is there an after life?
It doesn't get much better than Purple Rain. This album has floated in and out of my top 20 of all time since its release. This was a nice excuse to crank it up.

Prince rules. He is a rock, funk, and pop master. Vocally incredible (from range to timing), his pop sensibilities are on high alert. Everything on this record is fresh and vibrant. His music is intricate and, at times, challenging. Dude had it all. This album will knock your socks off and leave you pining for more of his delectable musical nectars. Bruh is pop pantheon.

I just don’t ‘get’ Prince. Kiss and Sign o' the Times are great pop songs, but a lot of his work (including this) just seems unfocused and indulgent. Parts of this made me think I was listening to Van Halen or some other rock guitar noodling. I get that there are some quirkier moments in there too, and his lyrics are somewhat risqué, but this isn’t enough to make me feel this is something special or unique. It sounds of its time, and for me hasn’t aged that well. There may be some good songs in there, but they seem buried in layers of instruments and a dated production that - for me - covers up any of the songs' possible merits. Just because you can play 27 instruments, doesn’t mean you have to. And certainly not all at the same time.
This is an album that deserves to be played at full volume. It has great get up and go feeling to start the new week. I was familiar with Purple Rain inside out before seeing the film. Put them both together and my hormone racing mind as 14 year old was blown away. There's such a powerful band feel with Wendy and Lisa both having strong contributions. The Beautiful Ones is... beautiful. Darling Nikki is FILTH. Baby I'm a Star is pure funk. You don't even need the Purple Rain album closer to make this the perfect album. It's already achieved this before the iconic chords of the opening track are played. I love every second of this album - and I mean every second. There's not a single moment where I have my doubts. What a fella. Much missed.

Loved this album, Prince is a classic. I like the way the songs switch up between fast uptempo songs and more ballads. 5/5, opening and closing track are my favorites.

Epic opener, majestic. Very 80s sounding, but I do know that Prince pioneered that very sound, fits well with the decade. Purple Rain may be the greatest song of the 1980s in my opinion. The rest are a little more forgettable aside from When Doves Cry. I'd give the album another 6.5-7/10.
hits you fast with lets go crazy before some mellower songs before finishing extremely strongly with purple rain. The songwriting remains quite strong throughout. Fav. song: lets go crazy Least Fav. song: darling nikki

Mostly solid album. A few songs had an odd mix of instrumentation that I wasn't a huge fan of but the hits are hits and the songs I knew were still my favorite, which is almost all of them. 'The Beautiful Ones' and 'Darling Nikki' were the two that didn't do much for me, aside from that I really like this album.
For a little bit, I was convinced this wasn't the classic it was made out to be. But by the end, I understood. I only wish the instrumentation was a little bit better on a couple of the tracks.

Strong contender for greatest album opener of all time. It also feels like Prince is remember more for his eccentric style rather than the fact that he can shred better than the best. Prince also has a knack for these passionate wails that sells the high points of the albums. Purple Rain is unmatched in dynamics; Prince really knows how to reign in back to make way for big killer moments. I also appreciate the natural flow of the songs, going from one track to the next while still feeling distinct. I'll be honest in saying that side 2 doesn't grab me as much as side 1, but the closer track goes crazy. He knew what he was doing with this one.

The Album title is probably my favorite song off of this. It's a decent album, but just as the cover for it, it's lacking harmony at times. I would give it another listen probably later, because I think it deserves a second listen to fully get into the mood of the album. 3/5

This was a fun ride with an emotional finish. It wasn't as captivating as I'd hoped, but I imagine it will grow on me.
Classic album, so many great tracks. Never fails to put me in a good mood
So fun! Made me want to dance the Mambo in Havana in the 20s. Even though it’s not my normal style of music, I enjoyed every song and would definitely listen again or even put this on during a dinner party.

Excellent album
I've probably been a little too harsh for my review of the purple dwarf's *1999* (and my grade, 3/5, was harsh too). It was a fun rant, so I have no regrets. But still... So to get the karmic balance about Prince right, and given that I don't have anything original or interesting to add about this classic record from the eighties, I'm just gonna add one point to my initial estimation of *Purple Rain* (which was around 4 to 4.5) and therefore make its cover appear on my personal gallery of all-time stunners when you click on my profile. Those covers are starting to look good now, even if there are so many other personal favorites of mine I want to add to them right now. I also have to admit that it's fun to go from hall of fame to hall of shame, and smirk at the lowest-graded numbers. There too, I badly want to add a few stinkers to the list. I know some of them are coming up--not from Prince, though, even if his later stuff dangerously added that extra layer of cheese no one needed in the first place. But, hey, I know there's even worse than Prince's later carreer when it comes to ridiculous stuff--I've checked Dimery's list, and it's there, hiding among the gems. It'll be great singling those horrors out too. What a fun app, really. i am something that you'll never comprehend
Prince is definitely the sound of the 80s but unfortunately he's just never been for me. I don't know if it's the genre itself, or his songs being too busy for the singing, or something about the lack of "sing-along-ness" his music has always held for me but I just don't enjoy his music

Laid back album. Not in love with the 80s sound, but some iconic tunes here.
The hits are still amazing, especially When Doves Cry but, aside from Nickki Darling, most of the rest hasn't aged that well. Also, the asskicking guitar he is known for doesn't come out to play except on the first songs of each side. I know Rolling Stone had this as #8 all time which should mean 5 but I can't get there.
I've always appreciated Prince but never loved his songs. On this album, I'm impressed with the fact he plays so many instruments (the guitar wickedly) & I like his layered and varied production. It's an ambitious project, but the song-writing doesn't grab me, outside of When Doves Cry.
Lots of accolades and adoration for this album, but it’s just not for me. You really needed to be a fan of it growing up in the 80’s to like it now because Gawd is it ever cheesy and dated sounding now. I thought it was overrated back then, and I still do.
All Prince songs exist somewhere within a classic, three-circle Venn diagram. One circle is "brilliant musicianship", one is "sheer egotism", and the last is "utterly insane". The best songs fall into that beautiful center overlap. "Purple Rain" has SO MANY songs in the dead center of the diagram ("Let's Go Crazy", "When Doves Cry", "Purple Rain") that it demands a 5-star review.
I really tried to give Prince a chance. No matter how often I hear it, I find his music (particularly the guitar parts) banal and tired. Plus I really don't care for his voice.

The king of funk decided to write the most blistering rock song of all time. That opens a stunning album. I prefer the purple one's funk which is why Die 4 U is probably my favourite track. But the album just a sublime over the top piece of glorious madness.
Pffft. 5 stars. There are few perfect albums and this is one of them. All killer, zero filler. Most of it shouldn't even work but it does. Like, this opening with the organ and the eulogy? This could've crashed and burned. But it's fucking great. I like a lot of Prince's stuff, but he never got back to this. I bet this album benefitted from him writing, like, 200 songs and then paring it down to 9; that was his beef with WB, wasn't it? That they wouldn't let him release multiple albums a year? Anyway, I think curation helped this one a lot. I kinda wish he'd taken every three albums after this and pared those songs down to one album. Imagine. Extra points to Prince for making me believe, when I was 10, that somehow when I grew up, adult life would be something like what is on this album and its cover. Oh but here is some bullshit - on the 'normal' album on Apple Music, the end of I Would Die 4 U doesn't lead directly into Baby I'm a Star. Like, it just stops the party at the end of Die 4 U. I will take one star away from Apple Music for this and give Purple Rain 6 stars.
A couple of minor quibbles; sometimes the volume of ideas overwhelms the songcraft, but only occasionally. Secondly, Prince has a tendency towards a kind of sweaty, cramped version of funk that can feel claustrophobic and a little unsatisfying. However, Purple Rain is a kaleidoscope of talent. When everything comes together 'just so', the results are mighty. I would rate 'When Doves Cry' the crowning success - the audacity to create a funk song with no bass! - but there's almost too much to enjoy here. I had the privilege of seeing Prince live on the final night of his London O2 residency. Outstanding, and astounding.
I'm with Craig on this one. There is only one song here that I'm lukewarm about ("Computer Blue") and even that one gets a pass because it seems like it should have been on the soundtrack for WEIRD SCIENCE. Everything else? I mean... there's five singles here. Five. And it's only a 9 song album! And you know damn well "Darling Nikki" would've been a single, too, if it wouldn't have likely been censored for that bit about masturbating! This is about as close to perfect as a pop-leaning record is going to get in my book. I think it's also the only album on this list so far that I own on vinyl, which was nice for a change. This was a pretty good week for the list!

Again a super-classic. Prince released from 1978-1992 an album every year except from 1983. But given the high quality of the b-sides, he could have released a 5 star album in 1983 as well. (Out of all the Prince albums from that period, Dirty Mind, 1999, Purple Rain and Sign O the Times are obviously 5 star. Lovesexy, Parade or Around the World are say 4.5 star so 5 star should these be on the list... )
Prince' music has never really appealed to me, with a few exceptions. This album also has a couple of good songs, including When Doves Cry and the title song, but as a whole, I'm still not really digging it.
This album sounds like the 80's, and that's not for me. I don't think this album has aged as well as others from its time, it has become dated, not historic. Prince is to be respected, but I can't say this album was worth my time.

I must say that I didn't like this so much of this release (I prefer his less-pop releases), but I should pay respect to Prince.

I’ve always wished this album was mixed more like a 70s funk album than an 80s pop album.
A staple 80s album that cannot be missed. At least half of this record is stone cold classic pop from Prince. This is him at (or close to) his peak.
When it fucks it fucks hard
Prince definitely made good on the comparisons to Michael Jackson. He was certainly different enough to stand out on his own, which is really significant given just how much of a mega star Michael Jackson was. Prince is going to have quite the edge though as far as musicianship goes, and to a fault because the opinion of this review is that he held himself back in favor of a more complete composition. "Purple Rain" starts with "Let's Go Crazy", a funky start with a remarkable guitar solo by Prince to wrap it up. Prince's guitar playing is seemingly ignored, and while there is reason to view him more broadly than that, it just seems rare that he is lauded for that capability outside of people that had opportunity to witness him play. The songs on "Purple Rain" do feature his electric skills quite a bit ("When Doves Cry" has a fine opening), but the featuring of it is held back somehow until we get to the title track "Purple Rain" where the song is capped off by an incredible solo. The song leaves the listener with a desire for more of that passion from the guitar. Prince himself, is a showman/entertainer with a very disciplined and bridled energy, "Darling Nikki" is an example of this where his vocal range is explored a la Steven Tyler-esque screams, and perhaps this same discipline is what creates Prince's undeniable balance. Musically, for the 1980s, Prince seemed to rely on actual instruments as well as synthesizers. The drums are heavily electronic, auto-tune is plenty, all of the token sounds of the decade are present here. What makes this appreciable is that we can hear the real instruments too, and much of that is to Prince's credit for playing the guitar. The thing is, we only get pieces of that since his songs tend to phase in and out of the electronics and the real ones. The beat and primary melodies are certainly synthesized, and are then layered by actual instruments. A person can hear when it is all electronic, and when it is not. Not sure if that is genius, or just a product of the decade but the point here is that Prince did a way better job as a pop-rock artist using these tools than any of his contemporaries in the pop genre. If there is to be a complaint, it is when a synth solo is used in place of featuring Prince's prowess at guitar, the example being on "When Doves Cry" when the synth solo should have been him on the guitar. The sound of synth invokes the feeling of having sold out, but then the disciplined balance of Prince comes to mind and somehow even this most egregious error is somehow forgiven. Overall, while it may take repeated listens for armchair recording engineers to hear it, Prince's vision and his intentionality in producing this album becomes evident. Any band can take their standard 3-piece and make it be the forefront of their production, but not Prince. He did it differently, and while it may not make everyone happy, the thing is that he did it remarkably well. In a way it is though he gave us strong guitar moments just so we could understand that he did not need to, that he could compose beyond that, perhaps beyond himself.

I love Prince, but I'm actually wavering on 4 or 5 stars for this album, which seems crazy. It's got some of his most recognisable hits and the titular epic closer, it's just that some of the lesser known tracks don't really have the same pizazz. 4.5/5... fuck it, it's Prince. Have the 5 stars!!

What an album! Packed with bangers, opening with one of my favourite Prince tunes - Lets go Crazy - and racing through with high energy, none of when he sometimes sneaks towards cringe... which lets him get away with the finale. Loved it.

Another album I figured would come up on this and I was looking forward to actually spending some time with it. However, beyond 'When Doves Cry', I didn't really enjoy it. It felt really oddly produced, even on the 2015 remaster. The high percussion is in your face and the vocals are set way back. Maybe I'll prefer his earlier stuff.
I've never understood the appeal of Prince. Some of the rhythms are good, but I don't find most of his songs to be very tuneful. Never cared for his voice, and the lyrics don't do much for me. That said, I did enjoy the lyrics to "Baby I'm a Star."

Absolutely an amazing album. This deserves way more than five stars. If I could give more stars I would. All of the songs are fantastic and none of lack in any way. If this list had more Prince music, it would actually be legitimate.
Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to give this five stars. The last three days I've had Prince, Sabbath and the Talking Heads. We really are into the greatest of all time now! This is another one that would get in on the strength of two or three all time classics (Crazy, Doves, title track) so there really is no need for the rest to be so good too! It's not even my favourite Prince album - though I suspect that Around the World in a Day and Sign O The Times are coming too...
5/31/2022 - ALBUM #124 Today's Album: "Purple Rain" by Prince - From what I have heard from an anonymous Prince aficionado, this is not his best work, but if that's the case I have only the highest hopes for his other work because this project is amazing. It's one of those cases where an album is so generally appealing it becomes very popular and once it's printed on enough shirts and posters, it becomes iconic no matter if there are better albums by the artist or not. Most of the time in these cases it makes the album incredibly hard to live up to this image it's created for itself, but I really feel like this album perfectly met the expectation that was set for me. From the very start, Let's Go Crazy is an incredibly energetic and powerful opener with an absolutely killer guitar solo at the end. The production across the album has the punch of a classic Michael Jackson record, but the sounds feel so much more experimental and inventive and the personality of the songwriting makes these songs pretty incomparable with MJ's work. Each track has this lightning in a bottle energy, with very impressive performances, especially from the synth and bass. Prince's vocals sound really unique, confident, and strong, with an honestly impressive range and some moments where he screams out without holding back whatsoever. The song When Doves Cry is a particular favorite for me. The synth loop honestly sells the entire track for me, but everything else in the track including the incredibly catchy chorus just pushes it over the edge to make it such a fantastic track. The closing rack Purply Rain also stands out as this really epic closing track that wraps a lot of the lyrical themes of the album together, while bringing the whole project to a satisfying resolution. Many of the other tracks on here like Take Me with U, Computer Blue, and Darling Nikki also stand out to me as really solid tracks to me as well, and I just want to point out that none of these tracks fall below the 7.5 Highlights threshold. There may be songs that I think slightly lesser of than others, but every track on this album deserves a listen and the album as a whole flows incredibly well. Overall, this is an essential listen for any music fan and especially for anyone that loves the glory days of new-wave and electronic pop. Give this one a listen if you want a great introduction to Prince or just want to know why this album is so iconic. There’s always a back beat that keeps even the ballads driving you forward. His music is timeless and has elements of music from decades that proceeded him. Whether you like him or not, He’s pure genius when it comes to composition. The iconic beginning to “When Doves Cry” and “Purple Rain;” when you can hear two chords and know the song, that’s talent. His whole album follows in that vein. one-of-a-kind mastery.
Admitedly, Purple Rain is not a perfect album, but Prince's effortless blending of funk, blues, rock, and very poppy pop produces great results. 4.75

People often tell me I look like a young Prince when he was in his purple pomp. My chosen colour is brown though, because it's the colour of shit. I'm really into scat porn at the moment. With Prince albums, there are always songs that I absolutely adore, and songs that I can't stand; rarely anything in between. This one was no exception. However, there was only 1 song on each side I disliked. The rest was pure gold. Remove those two tracks and we would have an easy 5 stars here.

Still not sure I get the fuss about the song purple rain, but funky album, feel like I knew most of the tracks already. Always meant to listen to more Prince.
'When doves cry' and 'Purple Rain' elevate this album to a complete classic. I am not going to individually review each track, but this is a quintessentially the 80s contemporary piece of pop art that should be the showcase of the vernacular of the era. Drum sound, slight kitsch - hedonistic and yet innovate and ground breaking. Very close to a 5/5 - it's a 4/5 because it requires some adjustment to get into the mood for it, but when you do, you're well rewarded.

Dad used to play this while I waited in the car and he ran in to get cigarettes. He would restart it when he got back in. Bonus nostalgia points, not my thing, but enjoyed it more than Sign Of The Times.

Oh Boy do I remember this album- my sister played it to death. Listening to it now is quite refreshing since a lot has happened since. There's a lot of energy and flamboyance and no matter how OTT it's Prince. It just epitomises the 80's for me so I wouldn't play this other than for nostalgia. Musically dare I say I find it quite two dimensional: lots of energy and skill but there's no depth. Even the deeply personal tracks don't come across with any emotion. Maybe it's like the man himself- there's an impenetrable mask?
10/10. Has a couple of my favorite Prince songs on it, and while a couple songs are only meh, I still enjoy it all the way through.

Absolutely fantastic. The first few songs sounded more conventional than the core of the record, which ends on a slower note. I hear the movie's awful, but expect it adds some amount of context.

It’s easy – and helpful – to forget that this is the soundtrack to one* of the worst films of the 1980s. I mean, I really worked on liking this film. Really worked. But after a fourth watch, I pretty much lost the will to live. (I was, in a dumb 12 year old kind of way, quite shocked to discover that it is actually ok to like the album but hate the film. Sort of like loving the sinner but hating the sin.) *‘Purple Rain’, believe it or not, is not even the worst film Prince made in the 80s.

Best Song: When Doves Cry. I really don't think anyone other than Prince could make this song work. Everything about it is killer: the layered vocals, the introspective lyrics, that slow grinding groove. Worst Song: The Beautiful Ones. Too sleepy and synthy. Doesn't meet the energy of the songs that come before or after. I do like the raw vocals at the end though. Overall: It's hard not to love Prince's goddamn charisma. The best songs on this album sound like pure Purple energy. Prince sounds like Michael Jackson if MJ had a soul. Even still, there is a pretty sizable gulf between the massive heights that the singles reach and the comparatively far weaker songs that fill the rest of the album.

A real banger of an album. While side 1 doesn’t ever really match the energy of the opener, it’s still rock solid. The only misstep on the album is “Darling Nikki”, which is both just kind of a bad song and the mixing was terrible.

So I appreciate the different themes in each of the songs on this album. Each one feels like it’s trying to achieve its own thing, or is separated enough to not get old. Most of them have decent grooves, but not incredible. It feels like the hits from the albums were the hits for a reason. Still a fun and interesting listen. 7/10

The G.O.A.T. with one of my all time favorite albums. I could ramble on for hours about this one, and nobody wants that, so I'll just say 5 stars and leave it at that.
Driving, sexual, anthemic. This album is obviously in the upper echelons of popular music. Prince was a musical chameleon and this album reflects his best. His musicianship is understated despite the fact that his guitar playing is some of the best. He always did what was best for the song at hand.

I remeber being kid in the video store and seeing the wall sized poster for this album/movie. I had no real idea of who Prince was and my parents seemed pretty eager to keep it that way, but I remeber being frozen in awe of just how damned cool Prince must be. So, the elephant in the room - Darling Nikki. What a singularly fascinating song. I'm sure the sexual subject matter and the outro with lyric played in reverse is a big part of why this whole album was the focus of so much conservative and censorship ire. It's probably also part of the reason why my parents weren't stoked to see me gawking at the poster, all those years back. If you can look past that though, it is a relentlessly catchy track, merging funk, rock and healthy portion of musical theater. Outside of that one salacious track, the rest of the album is focused on common funk and R&B lyrical themes. The arrangements, the live band vibe, Prince's vocal diversity and improvisation all come together with fluid perfection. Nearly every track is a stand alone hit, and played back to back they sound cohesive and congruent. An all out great album!
This album was in my house soon after it’s release (an LP purchased by my sister I believe), I’ve listened to it I’m sure a hundred times, and very happily listened to it again as it came up on this list. I think it’s a true masterpiece, blending psychedelic funk, R&B and Soul, pop and rock With a seamless precision not seen before or since. Prince’s vocals are as good as anything James Brown did, as good as anything by Michael Jackson - and he’s a virtuoso guitarist to boot. This one will survive the ages

His virtuoso playing and singing, mixed with his writing and sense of performing, all create an album that throughout is completely unique and authentic, blending all the sounds and genres from the 80s. A great run time as well with on point production. The entire vine felt like a concert with that legendary outro to Purple Rain the song to conclude it. Prince is probably the greatest musician in 20th century popular music. What can he not do?

Purple Rain is a jam for sure, but its not good consistently and its like 10 minutes long, if you want me to listen to a ten minute song it has to be good all the way through. Kim Basinger has aged and so has Purple Rain. But the classic album endures partly because of the personality and all the stories tied to it. The Charlie Murphy skits on Chapelle's Show were the best. My favorite is when Prince challenges the Murphy crew to a game of hoops, destroys them and then serves pancakes afterward. Sure, Let's Go Crazy has got to be one of the best 'pick me up' songs there is known to man and despite the inclusion of Computer Blue, this album still scores high.
