Reviews (page 12 of 14)

Prince's sexual pop rock style just isn't for me, the songs were decent but were also painfully 80's

Darling Nikki is DIRTY.

I mean super classic but this reminds me of someone so that docks points.

Loved 'When doves cry' and 'Darling Nicky'. Sometimes the sound was a bit too 80's for me, too screamy and with too many sounds at once, but I get why it's big. Maybe this typical 80's sound is not my thing per se

I don’t like price. Sometimes he sounds like he’s masturbating while recording, other times he sounds like a squealing pig. I tried getting into his music before, but it’s just not for me. this album is alright tho, mainly because of the closer

6.5/10

Really enjoyed the first song. An iconic and ahead of it's time album. Not my thing, but I see the talent and the mass appeal. Standout Tracks: - Let's Go Crazy

Not really into Prince or this album much. I can't get myself to enjoy this more 80's synth driven Funk. Perhaps its suffers from a lot of music in the decade wanting to sound like Prince. His guitar playing and songcraft is still incredible though. Let's Go Crazy is a fun song and When Doves Cry and Purple Rain are good songs even if overplayed. Don't really dig most of the album tracks on here, they either don't stick or have some weird other thing about them that I dislike. Small note but why the hell is the flower pattern on the sides of the album cover here?

Not bad but not my thing.

Purple Rain 5* Album 3*

Listenable

paar goeie nummers... soms zodanig veel falsetto dat ik dacht dat het een Beegees album was

3 äpplen hög blir 3 i betyg.

I can hear the influence of this album on the wider music community, absolutely. But my connection to the same religious background affects my perception of the lyrics and this is a rough album for me. Love the synth and instrumental prowress, struggle with the rest.

Meh, a bit overhyped

Classic

I understand how great this album is, but it never really clicked with me. It feels really weird to give it my tied lowest rating to date, but I can't justify giving it a 4 or 5. Prince will always be one of the greatest artists of all time, but I can't say he's made it onto my favorites list. Fav song: The Beautiful Ones

direi un 3.5 anche se "purple rain" da sola sarebbe da 5

Yeah I just really don't enjoy Prince.

Hits are great, but the rest van be forgotten

I know this is a classic, but it just sounds too dated.

Even though i do like some individual songs from Prince, this album wasn't my thing

I guess I really don't understand Prince, because this is fine, but it's not really that good, let alone great. It has some good fun sex appeal, and the album does a great job of at least remaining interesting. But he's not that good a singer, and the style in generally is just bleh. Favorite Song(s): When Doves Cry

Amazing start to an album, among the greatest. But I just don't love Prince that much, I'm a bad Minnesotan. It's unique and fresh and fun so I'll give credit to it objectively.

It's time to come clean: I've never seen Purple Rain. And I've always found the album to be good but not great. Obviously some classics on here, but I honestly don't really like the song Purple Rain. Never have...

It's very good - but not for me.

Couple of good songs, a lot of 'Prince'.

Solid hits.

I was expecting more from Prince, but it wasn't bad. Just not great

Obviously I know the big hits but this was my first Prince album and I really enjoyed it! It’s very of it’s time (especially the big synth drums) but it’s easy to overlook that. I Would Die 4 U still sounds amazing. Baby I’m A Star is the perfect song for a montage.

Some proper bangers in there, Let’s Go Crazy, When Doves Cry, & of course the anthem Purple Rain all top drawer stuff! He was a temperamental son of bitch but goodness was he ever a talent! Some of the album tracks sound a little dated these days but still a great album.

I find myself really liking very small parts of some prince songs and not particularly enjoying everything in between

I really enjoyed about half of this album, and the rest of it is probably a 3 for me. 3.5

3.5 Not a fan of MJ style music, but this was pretty interesting.

Purple Rain is the sixth studio album by Prince, originally released in 1984. This record contains some of Prince's biggest hits. Probably one of the best album opener/closer combo, and I'm not even that big of a Prince fan. This thing screams the 80s but Prince makes it work. Some would say it's overproduced but it's done pretty tastefully. It even has some psychedelic elements to it, as is to be expected from Prince. Not every song is an absolute banger but it's a damn solid album.

The youtube link gave me a blank screen. I search for the album independently on youtube and got a version that has remixes and additional material (e.g. the song Wonderful Ass). Unfortunately, this is the version of the album I need to rate. Prince is (was) unique, innovative, and iconic. I liked the songs in general, but also felt that the version of the album I had was meant more as an accompaniment to the movie (which I have not seen) than as a standalone work. Good songs. Some not so good. And bad arrangement?

I'd never actually listened to this whole album. The hit songs are all bangers but the others are pretty meh.

Do you like rock and funk music? Then this album is for you. These songs ain´t bad. I just don´t really like the lyrics there pretty weird. But overall I like the guys voice. The beat of the songs are great. Would I listen to this album no but I would recommend this album just because of the guys voice.

Overall a ok album. lyrics didnt stand out that much or sounded that special. THe sound also didnt stand out in anyway. it just kinda felt like a average album

its mid its not that bad i like the beat the lyircs. i give it 3 out 5. Also i like the drums.

Worthy of all the 4s and 5s, but as to what I like to listen to it’s really a 3 for me. I do love the song Purple Rain but not a lover of the rest of the songs.

I recently listened to a great podcast on Too Much Information about the movie, and I've been meaning to listen to it ever since. Perfect timing.

Interesting synth work on The Beautiful Ones. Vocal range is remarkable, great power and emotion. Darling Nikki — I see why he was a sex symbol reputation. Strong end.

I know this album is iconic and I really wanted to like it, but I just didn’t vibe with it. It just a bit too 80’s and I’ve never been able to appreciate much music that came from that decade. This definitely had its moments, but as a whole, not my jam. Highlights: When Doves Cry, I Would Die 4 U.

pretty good

overhyped couple good songs, pretty good lyricism but it's really flat. 5/10

It's Prince doing his Prince thing. Highlights: "Let's Go Crazy" (opening blast), "I Would Die 4 U", "Purple Rain" Notable: "Take Me With U" (breezy pop song with some nice percussive breaks)

ns mid

It feels very dramatic and over the top to me.

I was 10 when this came out, and liked the radio singles as much as any 10-year-old likes pop songs. Turns out, every song is about sex. I’m a little embarrassed for that kid back then.

I love his voice but I’m not a huge prince fan. Great production.

Good...3.5

''Let's Go Crazy'' is a good song. Ahead of it's time. ''Take Me With U'' is a good song. ''The Beautiful Ones'' is boring, i'm sorry. ''Computer Blue'' is a very interesting song. ''Darling Nikki'' doesn't go anywhere for me. ''When Doves Cry'' a classic. ''I Would Die 4 U'' is a good song. ''Baby I'm a Star'' is an okay song. ''Purple Rain'' another classic.

it'd be a 2.5 for me, the 3 is mostly for "Purple Rain", like nice album but nothing that stands out too much for me except that last song

Siis taas erinomainen albumi täysin rinnoin mutta en vaan ite jaksa kuunnella princee sen enempää (paitsi nimenomaan purple rain)

Had some okay songs, but also some basic

More like 3.5 Pretty decent and good vibes I don't really like when Prince starts shrieking with his vocals though

As well as the massive hits, there's some shmaltzy synth-pop, some cheese, and some sleepers. Not sure where it lands overall so I guess that means a 3? Probably more a 3.5 Something about Prince reminds me of Ruby Rhod from The Fifth Element

Prince: *overrated sex noises*

I liked the first song. Need to listen to the rest.

Pretty okay album, with Purple Rain being the only song that I knew. Nothing too exciting, although I know that this was pretty amazing-sounding for back in the day. I would say that overall the album is a bit meh, which is why I am giving it a lower rating, but I would give it 3,5 stars if I could give halves.

it’s strange so it stays interesting but some of the songs i don’t gel with

Not a big Prince fan but this is way better than some of the other shit I've had to listen to in recent days, so it gets an immediate boost to compensate.

Enough Prince for me, two albums was too much.

An alright album. Some weird stuff on there - Computer Blue especially. Although nice to hear a theremin feature on an album. Purple Rain and When Doves Cry are decent tracks though.

Liked the second half more. Was fine.

I really like 4 of the songs on this album, but as a whole its not as enjoyable to me.

prince is legendary but 80s pop is maybe just not for me. little too synthy and little too much talk abt girls masturbating favorites: when doves cry, i would die 4 u

Purple

Much better than the last Prince album. The variety and less smutty songs, ignoring Nikki, made this one more enjoyable.

He’s a better showman than a musician

Honestly I kind of struggled with whether to give this a 3 or a 4 which is absolutely shocking to me considering how much I despise 1999. I think the reason I'm gonna give it a 3 instead of a 4 is because of tracks 3 and 5. I really didn't like them, 3 because there was waaaaay too much falsetto and 5 because I don't want to hear about how horny Prince is, I already had an entire album of that in 1999. However, "Let's Go Crazy", "When Doves Cry", and "Purple Rain" are just bangers there's no two ways about it. This was a much better album than 1999 but I don't feel bad that I only know Prince's hits, his other stuff has been either bleh or just meh so far.

this album is marginally better than 1999, but I just don't get the hype around Prince. too many falsettos, overly synthesized & produced.

Good solid album with some classics on. Not an album I would normally put on. But an easy listen.

Heard a lot about it, seems Ok

I’ve never been a huge Prince fan so I’ve never fully understood the hype around him and this album. I listened to it, it was fine. I like let’s go crazy, it’s a strong opener. After that there are moments that I thought were cool, and I actually liked it more than I expected. However, it’s not one I’m probably going to come back to all that often, if ever.

I didnt really like it other than a few songs. I think this is my third prince album and I’m surprised I’ve disliked all three.

Favourite songs: When Doves Cry, Purple Rain, Let's Go Crazy, Baby I'm a Star, Computer Blue Least favourite songs: The Beautiful Ones, Darling Nikki 3/5

Couple hits. Rest were OK.

I generally dislike Prince's music but this album is quite good!

It’s clear why this album is called Purple Rain, the title song is far and away the best. Not really sure what i expected from Prince, but this was ok. Nothing wow’d me except for the finale, but I do love the 80’s vibe this album gives.

I was impressed with the complex composition of the songs and I appreciate Prince as a guitarist. That said, people’s deep enthusiasm for him is beyond me

Honestly...I don't get all the hype around this album. Sure it's good and Prince brings a unique element that only he can, but some of these songs aren't great. Let's Go Crazy is an awesome starter but The Beautiful Ones is awful. One of the best of all time? No. 6/10 (3/5)

Interesting. Liked Let's go Crazy. I'm surprised I didn't recognize Purple Rain. Glad I finally listened to this album.

Thought this one was pretty good. Such an easy listen with the vocals and the talent you have to have to put together songs like this - genuinely really impressive. Some of the songs were less enjoyable than others but for the most part a very enjoyable album, never realised how good Prince was tbh.

Huge respect for Prince’s genius and talent. But the music doesn’t move me.

I'll be honest. I don't like Prince and I'm frankly sick of hearing about him. Still, I had to give this a fair listen and it's not all bad. The song Purple Rain kinda redeems the whole thing, even if it is 3 minutes too long.

Pure genius, the only rhythmy rock album I like, and yay Minnesota

What a personality! I have obviously always been aware of Prince, but I have never taken the time to listen to a whole of album of his. It’s fun and didn’t go on too long. I felt like I knew half of the songs well enough from exposure over time. “Darling Nikki” and “Baby, I’m a Star” were personal favorites. I loved the off-kilter lyrics and timing.

This is a mixed bag of an album for me. Some songs are timeless classics, like the eponymous Purple Rain. However, some songs feel like they are very much of their time and are just not my kind of thing at all, like the opening track. They almost feel like filler compared to the better tracks. When it's good, it is very good. When it isn't good, it's a bit dull.

Of course Prince is amazing and delicious, and it's fun to hear him do his thing. Not amazing music overall but a good time!

Apparently the most 'pop' Prince album and contains 3/5 of his top songs on Spotify. However, it seems to be missing a little bit of magic compared to the others on the list. It feels a bit Prince by numbers. Rating: 3/5 Playlist track: Purple Rain Date listened: 11/07/24

jaky w trakcie zatwardzenia spiewal, ale pewnie jak wyszlo to sie moglo podobac, bo jest ciekawe

Feel like I'm missing something with this album, and maybe Prince in general It was alright. One or two songs I quite enjoyed and that was about it. Never really liked purple rain! Didn't like his screeching though 3 ⭐️

Had to listen as a fellow Minnesotan, but just can't quite get drawn into his music. A little bit too slow, somehow? He's an incredible guitarist and Let's Go Crazy is an absolute banger, though!

I dont know what the big deal about this guy is, i dont really like it

Not bad. Never really listened to Prince before. 3 or 4

the screaming at the end of beautiful ones is awesome. man this was lack luster. top 4 album by apple. SMD

Sadly, I didn't enjoy it as much. But it's clearly well-made, and Purple Rain is forever a classic.

First time listening to the full album. I actually prefer most of the non-single tracks.

I think this is pretty good. Doesn't strike me as particularly special. When Doves Cry stands out as a timeless classic and really cool that it has no baseline. Purple Rain on the other hand falls flat trying to be a ballad without anything to say. I think it's a fine pop album but not much more.

Prince is undeniably great musician. There's a lot of genius in this and probably influenced a lot of artists. That said I don't think I've ever purposely played a Prince song and don't think I ever will.

This was much better than Sign ‘O’ The Times but I don’t see myself returning to it. 2.5/5

Several great songs, but also a few unmemorable ones as well.

The movie is plain terrible and incredibly mysognystic. The music sucks a bit too. The song Purple Rain is weird 80s rubbish. When Doves Cry is pretty good.

It’s aight

Very talented just a little too much breathless yelling for me.

This is the third Prince album I've listened to and every time I think "This is when I will finally get into Prince," but, I'm afraid, it's another Rolling Stones situation for me: The hits are amazing classic tracks, but the album tracks I can live without. And this is the same thing here. There are 3 or 4 amazing songs and the others are okay. I think this album is the one I've enjoyed most so far, so perhaps, I am getting there and the day will still come when I am a Price convert!

The musical motifs ask more questions than providing answers

I've always had a problem with Prince. I don't like his voice and his attitude. He's a bit too exhaled for me. There are a few quite good tracks on the album. I like "When Doves Cry" and "Purple Rain". I don't get on so well with the rest. 3/5

Not for me

Great album, like almost everything by Prince.

As crazy as it sounds, given this laughably low score for one of the most beloved albums of all-time, I’ve actually come a long way with Purple Rain. When I made my inaugural “Prince I Like” playlist a few years ago, I didn’t include anything from this record. I didn’t particularly enjoy any of the songs I’d heard a thousand times, and none of the album cuts stood out to me. If I were to make said playlist now, I’d include a few tracks, “Darling Nikki” most certain of all. I dig the dirtier sounding drums and the delightful weirdness/borderline lo-fi-ness of it all. It has climbed pretty high up my list of favorite Prince songs in recent years. Even though I really don’t enjoy the drum sounds or synth stabs, I’d probably still include “Let’s Go Crazy” for the guitar work alone (I’d also consider throwing “Computer Blue” on there for the same reasons, though the second half of the song doesn’t do nearly as much for me as the gnarly first half does). The song I’ve come the farthest with, though, is “When Doves Cry”. Although I still don’t particularly dig the synth tone, I’ve grown to appreciate the sparser arrangement of it and the killer guitar tone. Otherwise…I don’t know, y’all. I know I’m the weird one. I know I’m the “wrong” one. I truly, honest to God recognize, respect, and occasionally enjoy his talent, but I just don’t fully “get” this classic era of Prince. I don’t enjoy his singing voice most of the time. I have a difficult time with the sound of these records, especially the drums and synthesizers. Stylistically, I struggle with the particular brand of R&B he tends to draw from. For instance, everyone loses their mind over "I Would Die 4 U", and that makes me feel the biggest sense of disconnect, because I think it sounds terrible. Same with "The Beautiful Ones". Hell, even the title track - a song which most rational people would argue is one of the best ever - has never moved me whatsoever. I don't hate it, and was as genuinely taken with his Super Bowl performance as anyone else, but I don't care/need to hear it ever again. Especially not the laughably echoing drums on it. When I listen to this album, I feel like I'm acknowledging and appreciating its greatness from a distance, rather than feeling immersed in and taken by it. I'm glad it reaches so many people on a deeper level, but it still doesn't have that high a ceiling for me. I definitely enjoy it much more than 1999, but I still think Sign o' the Times is the classic album that stands the best chance of rising higher in my estimations. 3/5

Ook I Would Die 4 U is sterk en Baby I'm a Star is fantastisch. Highlights When Doves Cry I Would Di 4 U Baby I'm a Star

Overrated and overplayed.

was expecting more, never heard Prince songs before, just the high praise he gets. but its just good 80s music imo too good for a 3 but not a 4, giving it a 3 for the let down

Not for me.

Just like many other albums on this list, this is my first listen through of a Prince album. I now understand why so many people love Prince and his music. It wasn’t life changing to me and I don’t know that I would seek it out, but I would listen again.

My first time listening to a Prince album all the way through. I can see myself listening to Purple Rain, When Dove’s Cry, and Let’s Go Crazy again.

As a 38-year-old adult, I think I really miss the boat on being a person that is in love with prince. I do know that he is a incredibly talented musician, but I don’t know.

Purple

It's undeniable that Prince as a great talent. It's pop, lots of vocal pops and ueh and unh. Production is very 80s and does't really hold up. Those drums are thin..... 3 stars

3 - I like Prince a bit more than I thought and there were a few songs on here that I didn't know were Prince, so that was neat. My issue with 1999 was the length of the songs, which wasn't an issue here. I maybe liked some of the songs more on 1999, but this is the more consistent and solid album of the two.

OK album with some solid and interesting songs/arrangements. I've never been a huge Prince fan, but I do respect his talent/musicianship. This album is not my particular cup of tea, and I am somewhat confused on the hype (maybe you had to be there). I would be more interested to check out other albums in his catalog that fall closer to my musical sensibilities. **

What a classic album. I wasn't ever a HUGE Prince fan but this is great. Stand out tracks for me include: - The Beautiful Ones - Take Me With U - purple rain

Love when doves cry and thought the rest of the album was a vibe but wasn't obsessed. The artistry in the music is obvious!

Inte lyssnat på hela album av Prince tidigare. Kul! Purple rain är förstås ett mästerverk och som förväntat är inte övriga låtar på den nivån. I would die for U och When doves cry gillar jag och de andra två singlarna är helt okej. Resten lite mer mediokert. Väger mellan en trea och fyra men landar i en stark trea.

I know this gets 100%'s across the board from everybody, and intellectually I understand there's a lot of impressive stuff going on from musical talent to genre-setting to cultural messaging. Yet on a personal preference level, I can't for the life of me get into it, and I've tried. So I don't know what's going on. Maybe I need to watch the film again?

Pure cheese. Which is great at first but you get sick eventually. Almost a 4

Prince is the prince

I like Prince sooo much more than I like Prince’s music. He's made some really good stuff, but the majority is just meh to me

It was ok. Don't quite get the hype.

The only album from Prince that I can really stand.

I tried so many times, but unfortunately, I'll never get into this album. But, at least, that's a true classic that deserves its place in this challenge.

It was okay, some classic songs some weird

Pretty classic, but Prince was never my favorite, so I think it's ok.

3.5 one of these days I’m gonna get Prince

Highlights: Purple Rain, Darling Nikki, When Doves Cry. In a nutshell: a genre blending magnum opus. Purple Rain is a "it's a bit of this, but it's also this" kind of album. It's flamboyant and experimental. Pop but ballsy. Rock with funk. Truly unique. Everything Prince and the Revolution did on here was a flex and we gushed over it. They're skilled. Although Prince and co did release music of the same calibre from that day on, it could never match the magnetism of Purple Rain. Never. I said what I said. Overall: 5/10

The album is a little odd. It was made as a soundtrack, and it certainly feels like it when listening through it. Most songs feel as if they’re experimental or as if they’re meant to be accompaniment to a movie. There’s lots of screaming guitars (and screaming Prince, too). There are some catchy and fun parts of songs, and it feels very 80s for better or for worse. The use of drum loops is probably the main factor in the 80s feeling. Overall, I thought it was fun, but there’s big highs and big lows in terms of song quality in my opinion. Favorite track: I Would Die 4 U

Ok album

It's fine, it's very good at being Prince; I'm just not a big Prince fan. Though "Darling Nikki" is surprisingly filthy. Didn't know that side of him.

great start, stays there and falls off

I guess I don’t really get Prince. This was ok, but I see so many reviews calling it a masterpiece

Not a Prince fan, could have probably been a four.

Let's Go Crazy and Purple Rain are standout tracks.

Great, I used to have “the best” of Prince, but hadn’t listened to an album

Pretty good, but as a whole album. Only 3 stars for me

I thought it was going to be better. Famous album that I found disappointing

OK it's a classic but not my bag

Not my cup of tea

ganz odenltich

I really like the idea of Prince but the music isn’t for me.

Einige Lieder sind bekannte Hits. Bester Prince. Aber auch manchmal anstrengende Stimme. Am Ende vieles gleich.

Excellent album but a bit too poppy for me

I had never listened to this before, but I had always meant to. It was okay. I think knowing how revered this album is, I expected more? Maybe I’d need to listen to it a few more times to get into it, but I was decidedly neutral on this album.

I know what I'm gonna play next time I host a party

its Prince, it done a lot, but ... its not for me

Not for me but I understand why people enjoy it

Sultry, smooth, funky and sexy. Prince captivates so much of what we know as such a unique and let-loose sound. He is a legend for his presentation and performance. This album is likely a 4 or 5 for many, but I’m not so enthralled with Prince’s music, but I give a 3/5 as the music is still very fun.

Few good songs carried this album

Iconic but beginning to age

Had some good songs like 'When Doves Cry', but otherwise average for the list. 3/5.

Decent. Lighter than what I typically like for Rock.

* The Beautiful Ones has me imagining an artist of some kind working on a piece of work in a montage with this song in the background. * Yet another album with industrial sounding beats. Not a bad thing, I enjoy those beats. Kinda makes me think of a machine slamming shut or rhythmic hammering. * The instrumental portion of Purple Rain certainly more than makes up for the meh lyrics. Whatever spot it gets in my rankings is almost solely based on the instrumentals section. If not for that, it'd probably be bottom 3, just above Baby I'm a Star. Wish those first three minutes didn't exist. That bit that starts around 4:40 and goes 'til after 5:00 is absolutely lovely, pure music to my ears. I see why people love Prince's playing. Don't quite understand the appeal for his singing though. -- Album Rankings -- 1. When Doves Cry 2. Purple Rain 3. Let's Go Crazy 4. Take Me with U 5. I Would Die 4 U 6. Computer Blue 7. The Beautiful Ones 8. Baby I'm a Star 9. Darling Nikki

Surprising listening to this entire album many years\decades later, outside of the singles, (Dove's Cry, Let's Go Crazy, etc) I'm not that crazy about anything else.

This was nice.

I really like some Prince stuff, other stuff, not so much. Nothing terrible but I think I’ll stick to what I like from him.

I love Prince but I have trouble getting over the 80s stylings

Obviously very talented and had a few songs I recognise.

Only like 3 songs

Not really my kind of music but I did listen to the whole album. Of course two songs on the album are classics and will always be on my favs playlist.

I can understand why Prince is seen as so pioneering but I don't think his sound is something I'm drawn to listening to.

Liked it a lot more than 1999, still didn't really enjoy any of the tracks.

Probably my favorite Prince album I’ve listened to. I recognize & appreciate the talent and creativity here, but most of it doesn’t really resonate with me. Just not my style.

purple rain is nice, the rest is rather disappointing

First cassette I ever bought!!

I wasn't a Prince fan when I was younger but as I've gotten older, the more I've dug into his discography, the more I've become a fan of his music regardless of what anyone says of his personality. Purple Rain is an amaizng album, the opening track being one of my favorite tracks 'Lets Go Crazy' just has this AMAZING energy I just love. Very 90s. Now this wasn't a perfect album to me.. 'Take Me With You' 'Computer Blue' and 'Darling Nikki' weren't my favorite songs, but of course 'Purple Rain' is a cult classic and an amazing song, 'I Would Die 4 U' is a song I found a few years back and have loved since, and 'When Doves Cry' is another one of his BIG hits thats just a big hit for a reason. I didn't know 'Baby I'm A Star' but I actually liked this eratic crazy track. Yeah, another album as a whole that I just loved from Prince. He really is just a crazy pop rockstar. His energy, his vocals, his talent with different musical instruments and just as an artist in general is just unmatched. He was who he was for a reason. One of the kings. Overall: 3.4/5

I need a shower.

Better with the movie. And Morris Day and the Time.

Found some new (to me) songs I really enjoyed. Way more 80's than I thought, don't know if I would go back and listen to the whole album over and over again.

everyone likes this but i dont know. too 80s for me. while hes a fenomenal guitarist and that no fucking one can deny, the album sounds too industrial. i appreciate the experimentalism too but it doesnt save it really. not a big fan of the histerical singing he does on some tracks, although it adds on certain moments i cant help but to feel bad for his throat. even on the good tracks like when doves cry the eletronic drumming sounds terrible. we have the song purple rain here too, awesome track, astonishing solo, maybe saves the album a bit for me, but not enough. cant see the album growing on me eventually too. so sadly ill give it a 3, really dont get why people love it so much. what a fucking horrible cover too, those roses by the side ruin it. iconic but horrendous.

It's alwight 7/10

Un peu déçu par Prince, beaucoup de criage entre les bangers j’vais te dire

It sounds like the cheesiest, most annoying kind of 80's music but executed in the best way possible. I think it's kind of a compliment. I can understand the fuss about it. (I don't like numeric ratings, I just give 3 to anyone)

When the doves cry on kasarin parhaimpia biisejä. Harmi, että levykin lähtee käyntiin oikeastaan vasta sen jälkimainingeissa. Purple rain on maailman hienoin viimeinen hidas. Alkukin on jees, lyriikat pitää mielenkiintoa yllä, mutta vähän kitkuttelua on. Upee kansi.

I cried like doves

Extremely talented multi-instrumentalist. Think you'd have to have been kicking around in the 80's to truly appreciate this for what it is but I enjoyed it nonetheless. Let's go crazy stood out to me as the song that's stood the test of time.

I'm going to pick some fights but I had never listened to this album straight before; after doing so I feel this is completely overhyped. There's some good vocals and musical work but to call this a perfect album is a stretch. Some songs are very tight and solid but there are gaps.

While I understand the importance of this album in pop culture, c'est pas non chose

only 3 stars bc it has a horny song on it and it's NNN but hey it's got purple freaking rain on it i can't rate it any lower

Loved it then. Not so much now.

It was okay im not a fan of prince.

Never listened to prince before this one. Sometimes I had to think of Anderson Paak listening to this. I acknowledge how much fun this album is, even though it does not naturally appeal to me.

Pretty good, can see why it's iconic. Just not really my style anymore.

Very funky and poppy. Crazy guitar playing and catchy tunes. Way better than 1999 in my opinion, for which I misjudged my view on Prince. This album is pretty darn solid!

I liked it better than 1999, but still not quite my jam.

I see why it’s adored but not really my thing. Favorite songs were purple rain of course and also darling Nikki was really good

better than i initially thought it would be; the beginning really put me off but it improved

I was very excited for this, but I really didn’t vibe with it. It sounds incredibly dated. An amazing talent, for sure, but not something I’ll return to in a hurry. Couple of bangers, mind.

Listened Before? Yes Album Art: 2 / 5 never loved this album cover; feels like grandma's tablecloth meets cheesy 80s movie. I'm not the biggest Prince guy, but when he's on he's great. Let's Go Crazy starts us off on an upbeat dancing beat. Super processed (read as shitty sounding) electronic drums / percussion, but the guitar rips and mixing is quality. Take Me with U is kind of boring, but the orchestral elements are pretty and the drum fills (although kind of out of place) were pretty dope at the closing. Some solid fretwork on Computer Blue. I enjoy Darling Nikki; such a dirty and uniquely formatted song. This version jams so much more naturally than the Foo Fighters cover; also Prince's vocals carry the energy much better. When Doves Cry is a pop jam. Just a fantastic song that stands up well to the test of time. Sure the drums have that over-processed 80's tone, but that has come back in vogue. This sits in the mid-3 category pretty firmly for me. Quality production with some standout tracks (Darling Nikki, When Doves Cry) but for the most part I just didn't care very much. Added to Library? No Songs Added to Playlists:

Let's Go Crazy, When Doves Cry, and Purple Rain are all jams. The rest of the album really pulls the rating down though. Something about Prince screaming turns me off and the instrumentals in all of the other songs aren't as impressive to me as people make a deal of. I'll add I Would Die 4 U on the good song list as well. Also Goose just did a cover of it at Red Rocks a couple weeks ago which they absolute crush. I don't get the Price hype, but this album is definitely better than the first one we listened to months and months ago.

I don't think I'll ever get the Prince hype but I will say that album was much better than the others we have listened to. 3.5 but keeping it down.

Prince always makes me think of my friend Sarah (English) and of the gym. They play a lot of Prince. I don't really like when songs open or close with talking I don't need Prince screaming at me in The Beautiful Ones. Good guitar and overall good songs. I liked Darling Nikki. When Doves Cry plays at the gym all the time. The throaty opening sounds like something that Ryan would play for me in the car. Purple Rain doesn't do much for me but it's a classic.

Good album from the year i was born! Liked it overall with electric aspect, but overall not blown away.

Not the greatest Prince fan. It's good though, obviously.

Best hard

Prince is an incredible guitar shredder! It's like if every song feels like "Beat It".

I can’t explain it but this sounds like *NSYNC sometimes anyway it’s good and all but personally not the cup of tea I would pour

As much as I want to like Prince, I just never fully gel with his sound. This album has one extremely erotic song, “when doves cry” and “purple rain” that are memorable

good guitar solos and catchy songs. not as much my style tho

As I heard so much about this album I was expecting much more musically. Don't get me wrong, I get the praise and it's a very grand spectacle overall, but the sound just come as generic 80s pop rock to me. If I listened to it growing up the impact would certainly be different, but listening nowadays the sound of it was already so overused that it just don't satnd out to me. That said, the album has a lot of personality, Prince shows to be a very talented musician and there are some bangers in it, the title track being actualy amazing.

Energy and vocal performance 10/10, but sound choice dates it pretty hard and first few songs don’t really hit

The end of "The Beautiful Ones" is just Prince screaming hysterically. I hate it. The rest of the album is not bad, just not my style.

I appreciate it for what it is but not my thing

Fun stuff. Doves cry

It’s a classic

When Doves Cry and Purple Rain are all-time great songs. Let's Go Crazy...not so much. The rest is all pretty good, I guess.

Je pensais que ce serait un peu meilleur, mais il y a des gros sons synthétiques(?) de guitare assez intéressants. Nice vibe. Je suis difficile depuis que j'ai atteint le club des 100!

GOOD!!! when doves cry! Awesome song.

Never really my style, and I don’t know why. But this was a great experience, regardless. And unlike any album I’ve ever heard.

Ja goud. Zo intens, zo veel. Ben alleen niet die hard Prince dan DUs niet al te hoog van mij

Some great songs but the album doesn't live up to the hype for me.

I Would Die 4 U is nice and the title track is an epic. Underwhelmed by the rest but better on second listen - great synths on Computer Blue. Still didn't connect with Darling Nikki.

Great 80's throwback. Probably the most underrated guitarist of all time.

Interesting listen, always heard of prince but never actually listened and I find this album to be pretty good. I think a lot of the songs kinda go on a little long and get a bit uninteresting but its okay. I see some people calling this like one of the best albums ever made or something and I just can't see that really, sorry, not for me. Favorite Tracks: Let's Go Crazy, Darling Nikki, When Doves Cry

thought i was gonna like it more than i did unfortunately. a couple good songs though, purple rain as a song is kinda overrated IMO

Plenty of certified bangers, but the occasional bit of filler.

As much as I wanted to hate this after Sign 'O' The Times, this was nice. Don't get the wrong idea! It's not like I l-like it or anything... Starts with a good song, plummets with off-putting screaming in The Beautiful Ones, then slowly gets better towards the end. Purple Rain stands out, so maaaybe it's not the worst album in the world. I-I mean... it's the worst! Get you pity 3 stars

6/10 Top 3: Purple rain The beautiful ones Darling nikki

Re-listen— listened to this one pretty recently so I’m a little annoyed that this is coming up now.

Genius but starting to sound very dated

Though I really enjoyed the themes explored on the album, I found the writing to be somewhat lackluster, and the music to be pretty significantly dated. Overall I was surprised considering I hear SO much praise for this album.

Was expecting more, a solid 3

Fun, fun album and I sung along to far too many of these!

Pop, with some fun guitar solos mixed in

BL: Prince’s purple rain is one of my mothers favourite albums of all time. I personally have no fondness attached to it besides the track “when doves cry” as it was a song I used to listen all the time when I was about 9 or 10. I’ll see how it holds up as a unit AL: it was pretty solid. There are some real bangers in the second half but the first half is quite weak I think. FT: “darling Nikki”, “when doves cry”, “I would die 4 u” 3/5

Stylistically impressive album with a few of the greatest hits included, but I felt underwhelmed considering all the praise constantly thrown at this album. The overabundance of electronic sounds grated on me after a while and took away from the impressive full band. Prince is clearly talented, but the 80s was so palpable here I lost my appetite a bit. I'd say other than the hits, Darling Nikki surprised me and was a very good song albeit extremely lewd. Maybe on future listens this album would jump up a star.

I am not a Prince fan and I do not apology for it. He can rip on guitar, and has obviously written a few really good hits. Just nothing as special as some critics and the public seems to bestowed on him.

2 incredibly great songs on a record I just didn't like. Not sure how to rate this.

I just don't think I'm a fan of Prince. He has moments of brilliance and some of that shows on this album. But as a whole the album is fairly boring.

Yep. Brilliant and all songs are well known and it is funky and easy to listen and all. But for me too much glamour and ado. Prefer Sly or George Clinton. 3 stars

Some good songs on here, and some that have dated

Legal mas nao entendo a super popularidade. Talvez eu esteja 40 anos atrasado.

Very good album, thought it was fine nothing major in the first half but the second is full of great hits

But I think Albie gives it a 4 🕺

It's good and stuff. I don't know that it will cure your gout or walk your dog or pay off your student loans like its reputation would suggest. I was pleasantly surprised by Take Me With U and Computer Blue. Darling Nikki is one of those songs where, if it had generic lyrical content, nobody would ever think about it twice. Completely uninteresting. I forgot how long When Doves Cry is. And the title track is really, really boring. Still plenty of good here. I like some of the rhythms and he's a great guitar player. I just can't get down with it being one of the best things ever made.

Definitivamente es muy bueno. Definitivamente no es lo mío.

I like it, but sometimes it's too chaotic

Couple of very nice songs but generally disappointed

This album showcases his immense talent and innovation. While it contains some standout tracks and unforgettable moments, the overall experience falls short in certain areas.

I liked Take me with you. In general it’s nice but not my type of music.

I mean it’s prince, it’s good so far. 3/5 halfway through? When doves cry is 4/5.

Strong 3

Some epic music. Overproduction and a over sung in places. Masterful guitar. It exploded things in the 80s. P

Love the known stuff…get a bit too much filled than thrilled by the rest. Not so aristocratic 2.5

I already knew When Doves Cry (I prefer Patti Smith's cover) and Purple Rain. Darling Nikki is new and I enjoyed it. The rest didn't stand out

A classic album and hugely important, but not one I really enjoy listening to often

although i can see the grandness that is attached to this album, personally there are many times where it comes off as repetitive and uninspiring. there are some great moments in here but to me this is a perfect example of the pros being unable to balance the cons best song: purple rain worst song: baby i’m a star overrated song: darling nikki underrated song: computer blue

Purple Rain (song) is a certified bop. Went to karaoke in NYC once and some guy was killing it on Let's Get Crazy. The rest of the album is a little weird and/or too freeform for me

Me l'aspettavo un po' meglio, devo dire. Tolta "Purple Rain", che è un capolavoro.

Purple brain

Good bit I do think I missed the hype on this one. Everything that was unique when he did it I've heard from other artists who (I assume) got inspired by him.

Its fine, not really for me.

I enjoyed listening to it, but I wont be playing it again 3/5

Not my thing

I liked it, but didn't love it. Some songs more than others.

Some decent cheesy disco bops on here, but overall I'm lukewarm on Prince. Some of the lyrics are a little cringey too.

Second time listening to this, through earphones this time, some good songs but the song purple rain is overrated.

I know I'm supposed to like Prince but I've never really understood the appeal. I guess you had to be there. The singles are ubiquitous by now if you've ever been in a public place or like, watched a film that was made in the last 40 years.

There's a couple of good songs and a bunch of weird ones. It sounds like a Prince album. It's a bummer that the best song on the record is the shortest one.

Todo un artista contemporáneo e innovador. Virtuoso en muchos sentidos, las canciones son sugerentes y bien elaboradas

I really don't get Prince, and nearly half these songs were just a bit too chaotic for me. Lots of screeching and screaming and random sound effects. But Doves Cry and Purple Rain are all time bops, so I think it evens out.

solid, enjoyable. 3.

Not sure about Prince, I like some songs and hate others, there is no inbetween.

Let’s Go Crazy and Purple Rain are obviously great but the rest of the album is a little too packed with cheesy 80’s-feeling music. 3.5.

I like 55% of the album. At first I was feeling like the music was dated and that I wasn’t feeling it because I didn’t grow up listening to it. However, from listening more than once, I found myself liking it more. 3/5

I know this is supposed to be a ground-breaking album. But....I just don't care for highly synthesized music. It is easy to tell which cuts ended up being the best known. They stand out on this album.

Was oké

Prince at his most maximalist – an album that throws everything at the wall and manages to stick quite a bit. While a good number of these tracks have been ruined for me by radio overplay, there's no denying the sheer personality and presence Prince injects into each song, leading to a listening experience that zig-zags constantly but still manages to sound shockingly coherent.

I made it through a whole Prince album. Prince has never been my thing, but I can appreciate his talent and I understand why other people are into him. He wrote some catchy tunes, just not to my taste.

I’m missing something here. It’s fine, probably good, but I can not hear what all the fuss is about. I’d maybe give it a 4 but I’m knocking down to a 3 for everyone who wrote “It’s Prince - what can I say” Say something mate, coz I need a clue back here.

Oh man, I wish I loved Prince. Few people have ever been as supremely talented as this dude. But his studio albums have always left me cold, thanks to that sterile '80s production. I just can't get over it. The drums and that keyboard just zap all of the soul out of the songs. For me. I love watching live Prince. But studio Prince, I just can't hack it. My loss.

This was fun, but I've never really connected w/ Prince for some reason. I didn't dislike it, but I can tell it's not something I'd go back to much. 3/5

Alright probs wouldn’t listen to again
