Very colorful, a lot is going on... makes me interested in listening to more Prince albums

I really like the idea of Prince but the music isn’t for me.

p520. 1984. 4 stars. Almost perfect. There are some classics on this - it's just let down by dated 80s synths and filler tracks.

What a treat to listen to this. It's flawless as far as I'm concerned and a certified masterpiece of pop. Prince was a true genius and one of the greatest musicians of all time. Taking time out of my day to listen to and appreciate Purple Rain was an absolute joy. I need more Prince in my life!

A classic album with no bad songs that revolutionized American pop (rock) music. The remaster changes the sounds of some of the songs. "Darling Nikki" sounds less heavy and hits less hard, but it is much more intricate with the new mixing/mastering.

An undisputed pop masterpiece, even among many people who normally hate pop music. There was something different about Prince. He brought in influences from a diverse range of music. His music was larger than life, tightly produced, sexy and danceable. No one else has ever managed to sound quite like him.

It's incredible that so much talent could be concentrated in single person. Of the non-singles, I most enjoyed Computer Blue, but every song on here is a banger.

An amazing and kinda weird one

I had never listened to this before, but I had always meant to. It was okay. I think knowing how revered this album is, I expected more? Maybe I’d need to listen to it a few more times to get into it, but I was decidedly neutral on this album.

Yess (Also 3 in a row I’ve heard before, what are the odds) If not my all-time favourite, definitely in the top 20 No bad songs, but if I had to pick the most skippable, I’d choose the one PMRC had their panties in a bunch over, “Darling Nikki”

its Prince, it done a lot, but ... its not for me

I remember all of these songs would be played on KEGL, The Eagle, in the metroplex. The music is great, but a couple of the songs just feel like they carry a bit too long.

Hard to argue with the greatest of this album. Catchy pop treats with soul and energy. 7 of the 9 tracks are memorable, which is an easy win.

Duck Tales woo-ooh.

Another highly overrated “artist”. I just don’t get it - what is supposed to be so amazing about this guy? Yes he’s a multi instrumentalist, and maybe quite good at it….but, the songs and the singing are nothing special - poor in fact. Not a fan.

It was a very classic album. Every single song was consistently good. Some were standouts like Darling Nikki and When Doves Cry.

Great album, Probably my favorite Prince album although I can't say its the best he ever made. But for sure its concise, has great songs top to bottom and doesn't linger for too long, which I have thought some of his other works are maybe just a tad bit longer than it needs to be. Let's Go Crazy, Computer Blue, I Would Die 4 U, When Doves Cry and of course Purple Rain are among my favorites from the album

A classic as always Top tracks: Let’s Go Crazy, When Doves Cry, Purple Rain

Sultry, smooth, funky and sexy. Prince captivates so much of what we know as such a unique and let-loose sound. He is a legend for his presentation and performance. This album is likely a 4 or 5 for many, but I’m not so enthralled with Prince’s music, but I give a 3/5 as the music is still very fun.

really enjoyed this album. Although I personally don't love the song Darling Nikki it does bring up a funny memory for me. This album does a great job of blending styles and doing it seamlessly.

Didn’t like the album as others might have did, wasn’t the biggest fan of ‘The Beautiful Ones’, just sounded uncomfortable to me. I was able to feel the talent, just was not convinced that this is one of the greatest albums of all time. His guitar performance for ‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps’ is one of the best live performances ever, I’ll give him that.

The movie proved one thing - Prince had no business acting. But holy crap could he play a guitar. And no matter how he's doing it - spoken word, singing, falsetto, screaming, or just making cooing noises - his voice is perfect throughout. I was gonna say that even the weak songs are strong, but DARLING NIKKI is a little too self-indulgent for me, and it almost forced me to deduct one star. Few good songs carried this album

It's a lot of layers. It was good to hear the familiar songs, but Darling Nikki just felt sleazy to me. I also couldn't get all the way through the end of Purple Rain. It just gets overwrought.

Prince… enough said

It’s a rare thing to watch a star form into a superstar in real time. Of course, it really happened over years and Prince paid plenty of dues. Plus, you might argue, “1999” was the real creative and commercial breakthrough moment. Still, this is the one that counts and it counts forever. Just how eternal is this record? Play this little party game. First level: place this in any genre and it’s one of the best of the group. Next level: place in every genre and it’s still the best. “Purple Rain” arrived with vision and purpose smack in the middle of the MTV era and during what some would call the most ‘80s year of a ridiculously productive decade for pop music. That Prince made a play for the throne among so many hit makers (Madonna, Michael Jackson, Springsteen, who still rank among the greatest-of-all-time) is astounding. But somehow, Prince made it look easy. And it came with ready-made visuals as a soundtrack to a movie that helped launch Prince into the stratosphere. And even if the film doesn’t hold up as well, the music sure as hell does. Iconic soon-to-be standards abound: “Let’s Go Crazy” is a tent revival rave-up; “When Doves Cry” is a famously bass-less ear worm with equal parts savvy hit-making and family therapy session; “Take Me with U” is a bouncy road trip with a signature Paisley Park vibe. Then there’s the god-tier closer and title track, which justifies every second of its 8+ minute epicness—masterful guitar work that out-solos even the hair metal of the day. Surely Slash took notes. You may argue with his choice of favorite color, but you can’t argue ownership. We might as well retire purple from the Rock game, because nobody but Prince can wear that color again without being an echo. The king is dead, long live the Prince.

Being a child of 80s and 90s, I’ve always been a Prince fan. I still don’t like every song on the album but this is classic Prince for sure.

Passionate vocals and surprisingly unique grooves combine into a genuinely stellar performance. Every track keeps me on my toes, toying with my expectations and not failing to deliver. Well worth their full 40 minutes of runtime. 5/5 -- "Will undoubtedly dip into it again!"

Yesterday I was reading the fight with the seven ai reincarnations of the artist in ready player two, what a fitting coincidence ^^ Overall such a dancy album with good songs. When doves cry will stay cool forever!

Pop, 80s, keys, male, mid/fast, sooo theatric, soooooo much drama, echos everywhere (especially on the drums), the guitar solo are unbearable, as well as the claps and keys/synth. Not aged well/at all, please excuse. Only adequate song is the last, still not protecting from 1 point - especially with 2 minutes guitar and piano outro.

This album is a classic, no dull spots.

Not a massive prince fan, but it must be said that he is an absolute musical genius. I wish I was more into his music. Also wish the movie was better! I enjoyed listening to the album in its entirety. Not my thing, but it and he is amazing! Solid 4

This album is turning 40 years old this year just like me! I can appreciate that Prince had a huge impact of music and was an incredibly talented musician - but this music/album just doesn't do it for me at all! I did enjoy 'When doves cry', it makes me nostalgic for the Quindon Tarver cover on the Romeo + Juliet sounds track. I wish I could rate it higher, but I really didn't enjoy the album and don't see myself listening to it again. So 1 star for the album and a bonus star for the influence Prince had on pop music.

Prince aint for me

This might be the best album I've had thus far. The guitar work is just masterful (as expected) but man, the sound is just out of this world for several tracks. Computer Blue was an unexpected gem.

Purple Rain by itself would be enough to make this a fantastic album; but throw in "Lets Go Crazy", "Darling Nikki", "When Doves Cry", "I Would Die 4 U" and it turns out I've been neglecting this album from my 'awesome album all the way through' list for far too long.

At a party recently someone asked me what would be my absolute, no hesitation go-to song to put on for everyone to end off the night. My answer was Purple Rain. That about says it all…the only issue I can even think of for this classic album is that Purple Rain is such a monumental piece of music that it almost can’t sit alongside any other songs as part of an album. That would certainly be the case if there weren’t so many other bangers on here as well. Still got the original vinyl of this one sitting in a storage crate. Just joined but it’s gonna be a tough one to beat!

When Doves Cry gets this album 4 stars by itself, Darling Nikki is still one of the dirtiest songs I have heard. It's not perfect so not 5 stars, but 4.5 stars would be my true score.

This album generates a lot of memories for me. Whether it be sneaking in to see the movie at AMC when clearly underage, or slow dancing a little too close to the title track at my 8th grade dance and not giving a sh*t what the nuns thought. This whole album oozed sexuality, and laid the foundation for teenage fantasies as well as future parental advisory disputes with Tipper Gore. From back to front every track is solid. And it’s fascinating to know that the last three songs on it have many tracks that were kept from live shows. Especially the title track with a lot of content apparently taken from a 1983 performance. 80s synth pop at its best.

Gotta be honest, I don’t think Prince is as good as he gets credit for. As a performer, he was larger than life (though actually quite short! Few know this). Talented musician, unique, but does that make him a good songwriter? I actually find the majority of this album annoying and unlistenable. I would honestly never put this on and listen to the whole album. It’s a shame that the album’s title track and finale is lumped in with the rest of this, because Purple Rain single handedly outscores the rest of the album combined. The moment he comes in with his trademark falsetto in the solo… chills, no matter how many times I hear it. Makes sense that it’s the last song, because what could follow that?

Goddammit Prince is great. One of the most talented, creative and original artists of all time. Can you still say he’s an underappreciated guitarist? Or have people caught on? Purple Rain is one of my favorite songs of all time and the Super Bowl performance is legendary. Darling Nikki was new to me and had me blushing like a 10 year old boy. Mr. Nelson, I say to you… Thank you for a funky time. Call me up whenever you wanna grind.

Amazing. Listened to it twice back to back. A lot of the lyrics would be corny if sung by another artist. But Prince can pull it off because, well… he’s Prince. Love the story about Tipper Gore walking in on her daughter listening to Darling Nikki and having a proper freak out (leading to the introduction of the parental advisory sticker on albums). Game…blouses. 4.5/5

Decent. Lighter than what I typically like for Rock.

Of course... a favourite since its release

Though the production is of it’s time this album is brilliant. Varied, fabulous songs and several cutting edge classics. The title track fade out lasts a week but it still doesn’t outstay its welcome. When Doves Cry is that rare breed of dance hit with killer guitar. The sexism is immature but, well, it was the eighties.

Before he got weird, fell out with the record company and changed his name to a symbol, there was this album. Not his first album, but without doubt his best. A ton of hits on here and I challenge anyone not to know the words to the majority of the songs. Nostalgia overload.

* The Beautiful Ones has me imagining an artist of some kind working on a piece of work in a montage with this song in the background. * Yet another album with industrial sounding beats. Not a bad thing, I enjoy those beats. Kinda makes me think of a machine slamming shut or rhythmic hammering. * The instrumental portion of Purple Rain certainly more than makes up for the meh lyrics. Whatever spot it gets in my rankings is almost solely based on the instrumentals section. If not for that, it'd probably be bottom 3, just above Baby I'm a Star. Wish those first three minutes didn't exist. That bit that starts around 4:40 and goes 'til after 5:00 is absolutely lovely, pure music to my ears. I see why people love Prince's playing. Purple Perfection

Fantastic album of '80s funk/pop. Love Prince. Let's Go Crazy is fun, Computer Blue is more relevant now than it was when it came out, Darling Nikki is the reason we have warning stickers, When Doves Cry is excellent musicianship, as is Purple Rain. Excellently crafted and played album.

One summer I was involved in local theater and spent a Saturday helping rig lights. The sound guy was testing the system and put on a cassette of Prince’s greatest hits. Up til then I only really knew When Doves Cry and, like, Batdance. I’ve been a big Prince fan ever since that day. 5 stars no notes. Songs added to Spotify: 2

🤩 just giving me absolute bangers. Definitely the album I'm most familiar with so far. But it absolutely deserves to be here. It's fun, sexy, impactful, and when you start picking it apart it holds so much depth and complexity. Prince really wrote the book on music that you could both dance and rock out to, and this is chapter 1.

Never was a fan, couple decent pop tunes but overall album nah..

I might type of music normally but songs for my youth and an amazing musician. I still consider one of the best guitar players ever.

Although it sounds dated, it is still pretty stellar

the genius of prince. he was a prolific songwriter that wrote most of his own songs (as well as songs for other artists). he could (and did) play any instrument that you put in front of him on his albums. this album is at the crossroads of pop, rock, and funk… really a perfect balance of each, none of which overshadow the others. a brilliant effort from a brilliant mind. highlights: “darling nikki”, “when doves cry”, “purple rain”.

Let’s Go Crazy is a perrenial banger. Take Me with U is an interesting and subtly discordant tune I’d never heard. The Beautiful Ones is an intensely cringe ballad. The lyrics are on the nose and his almost screaming at the end is way OTT. Not a great song. Computer Blue is another odd duck. Starts with a strange rock intro with one woman abiding by everything Lisa asks for, Prince sings, there is a weird ELO style break in the middle and the rock break comes back at the end. Darling Nikki is known as a classic but musically the song doesn’t really wow. The lyrics seem to be what makes this song memorable. This album is starting to feel much less coherent. So many strange styles mixed in. Much more avant garde almost. This transitions into When Doves Cry. The difference in impact is stark. When Doves Cry crafts a clear image and generates and eminently danceable pop-rock hybrid. The musical style in this song is very fresh and unique. I almost wanted to say “Prince, listen to the power of this. You don’t need to try so hard to be oblique and varied in the other songs.” He even includes a longer interlude at the end with a baroque flourish to end. It works here. I had forgotten about I Would Die for U. So happy that memories of hearing it came flooding back. Again, what a song. It works and has that coherence. I know that Prince intentionally inputs a flamboyant air to his music on this album. It works where it works but it’s so jarring when it is used with extreme intentionality. Don’t remember hearing Baby, I’m a Star. I was super young when Purple Rain came out in theatres. I remember my dad taking me to see it even though I was way too young. Pretty sure the movie broke part way through. This song had that classic jumpy, danciness to it. It even seems to have a slight homage to the style of Morris Day and the Time in it. This was Prince at his most musically intuitive. He was so talented at hearing similarities between styles. Follow this up with the last track, Purple Rain. Such a dramatic tone shift. I generally hate ballads and this will always hold a place in my heart. It’s gentle without being earnest. Overall, I’m surprised that such an important album has two exceptionally weak songs on it. I’d say three but I know that Darling Nikki has its devotees. Glad I listened to the whole album finally. Though I think I’ll stick to relistening to the hits.

Smash that highest rating! What's not to love? Yes some of the drum sounds are a little dated now, but they defined the times. "Let's Go Crazy" is an awesomely powerful starter. Many listens before accurately understanding the lyrics in places. "Take Me With U" - drums and synths fanfare before settling into mid-tempo love song with prominent female co-vocal. Fades out before.... "The Beautiful Ones" synth and electronic drums build before falsetto vocal that goes dramatically over-the-top (you can picture him on wailing on stage). Fades out with soaring guitar. "Computer Blue" feels like an lewd interlude in the stage act. Inextricable association with the choreography in to the movie. Also feels patched together from different tunes, like a prog rock suite. This leads into.... "Darling Nikki" great story in the lyrics, experimental studio sounds underlying a raging vocal and guitar. "When Doves Cry" - tour de force. Insert anecdote about chart-topping pop song without a bass line (recorded but removed from the mix). Intense but stark track cuts to.... "I Would Die 4 U" First of the "suite" recorded live in 1983 at Minneapolis' First Avenue club (scene of the film as well). Beautiful classic example of Prince's sound circa '83-84: electronic drums, female backing vocals, warm synths. Short single-friendly track that on the original LP drives into.... "Baby I'm a Star" The second of the live suite. Big drum count-in, polyphonic synths and party-like voices yield to high-energy track. Radio-like fade out and a quiet pause before... "Purple Rain" Wendy Melvoin's now-iconic chorused solo guitar starts the mood before the echo-dripping drum machine and Prince's emotional vocals bring in the Purple Rain. Classic ballad shape as the accompaniment builds, and we float out on the extended brilliant guitar solo, also recorded live at Minneapolis' First Avenue club.

Not really my kind of music but I did listen to the whole album. Of course two songs on the album are classics and will always be on my favs playlist.

3rd Prince album and he's fine. Like the music is good but it doesn't excite me like other artists. Talented guy for sure but just not for me overall.

not only was the instrumentation on this album very good, but princes vocals where phenomenal as well. imo the eccentric + funky guitar solos throughout this album are what really make it. though i don’t think many songs on this album will be on my regular rotation cause they have that 80s sound im not too fond of, i enjoyed almost every track and i can see why this album is so iconic

I really loved listening to this again. All of the songs are great and there are so many amazing moments in the production, performance, and arrangements. It is one those albums that has a sound all its own.

Iconic album, what is there to say. I would die 4 u is such a bop. Prince forever. I hope we get some more of him.

The end of the beautiful ones is great. I like all of his songs but I hate when he sings in his falsetto. Also I dislike purple rain song until he stops singing. Then it’s cool.

I can understand why Prince is seen as so pioneering but I don't think his sound is something I'm drawn to listening to.

Track 1: fun up near synth and epic ending with the slowdown guitar solo. Track 2: I like the strings and background singers! The song itself was kinda had a basic progression though. Track 3: decent ballad and cool wobbly synth. Track 4: some cool progressions and sick bee swarm riff. Track 5: when I hear people talking about prince I think this. Track 6: nice drums in this. Track 7: not my favorite song on this album. Track 8: fun synth parts and solo. Track 9: good closer ballad and good song for it being a title track! I really like the guitar in this and the strings at the end. Overall: 7.7/10 it was solid but not an absolute favorite. I would listen to it again

Probably my favorite Prince album I’ve listened to. I recognize & appreciate the talent and creativity here, but most of it doesn’t really resonate with me. Just not my style.

It's good, but this album has a reputation of being one of those that will make your soul leave your body, and it didn't do all that for me.

Just fantastic, what a great album.

The one where Prince blew up and achieved a supernova level of stardom. Where he took everything he had done until then and channelled it into something so striking and universally popular, full of hooks and hits, but without ever sacrificing his musical integrity. One of the greatest albums of all time, and not even Prince’s best. Just think on that for a moment. That’s how good ‘Purple Rain’ is.

A lot of people like Prince and I wasn’t sure why. I now know why. Amazing electric musical artistry. “Darling Nikki” was a bit much. “Purple Rain” is a church song. Other than that, the rest of the album I loved. 9/10

God it's just so amazing. Every song sounds so great and you could sit there and listen to the two main tracks When Doves Cry and Purple rain over and over again. A guitar player rivaled by so few but keeps in minimal on the tracks so when it comes in it's perfectly short. His vocals are amazing and featured on each track. The only knock against this is that he sounds even better in his live versions and I wish we had those instead. 9/10

This is the music I wish was left in the 80s. Prince goes from sounding like a women to a cat dying to a man in an outfit that is tight around the crotch. I’ve never listened to Prince and have only ever heard one song of this album: I would die 4 u. The sounds are cheesy and loud for no reason. I thought he was known for being this amazing guitarist so I was pretty surprised when there really wasn’t that much guitar and it was not even close to amazing. Prince's masterpiece. From the moment the album starts with 'Let's Go Crazy' it has you hooked all the way. It's Purple Rain!

I've literally never listened to this album despite how hugely popular it is so this will be fun. 3 tracks in so far, don't really care for it thus far, 2nd half of "The Beautiful Ones" is pretty solid though. aaaand I'm done.. definitely like how varied and interesting this album is, especially compared to my first 2 albums on here that I ranked prior to this one. couple filler tracks and a handful of good but not great songs but overall I can somewhat get behind the hype of this album A very comfortable 4/5

Very 80s. Somewhat unique, but just not my style. I'm not a fan of falsetto and 80s music in general. Apparently this is the album responsible for Tipper Gore's campaign to have parental advisory stickers. I guess I'm glad I listened to it so I know what Prince is all about, but I probably won't ever listen to this again.

Prince is HIM. This is so bombastic and amazing -- its not like TOTALLY my style and some of my favorite Prince songs are on other albums but this is awesome without a doubt

I wasn't a Prince fan when I was younger but as I've gotten older, the more I've dug into his discography, the more I've become a fan of his music regardless of what anyone says of his personality. Purple Rain is an amaizng album, the opening track being one of my favorite tracks 'Lets Go Crazy' just has this AMAZING energy I just love. Very 90s. Now this wasn't a perfect album to me.. 'Take Me With You' 'Computer Blue' and 'Darling Nikki' weren't my favorite songs, but of course 'Purple Rain' is a cult classic and an amazing song, 'I Would Die 4 U' is a song I found a few years back and have loved since, and 'When Doves Cry' is another one of his BIG hits thats just a big hit for a reason. I didn't know 'Baby I'm A Star' but I actually liked this eratic crazy track. Yeah, another album as a whole that I just loved from Prince. He really is just a crazy pop rockstar. His energy, his vocals, his talent with different musical instruments and just as an artist in general is just unmatched. He was who he was for a reason. One of the kings. Overall: 3.4/5

When I saw this album come up, I was excited because I always wanted to listen to it. I wasn’t disappointed. It is a synthy, moody pop masterpiece. Every song is so interesting in its production and the sounds just never get boring. Prince’s voice glides over this thing near casually. An absolute classic that deserves its right as one.

Found some new (to me) songs I really enjoyed. Way more 80's than I thought, don't know if I would go back and listen to the whole album over and over again.

everyone likes this but i dont know. too 80s for me. while hes a fenomenal guitarist and that no fucking one can deny, the album sounds too industrial. i appreciate the experimentalism too but it doesnt save it really. not a big fan of the histerical singing he does on some tracks, although it adds on certain moments i cant help but to feel bad for his throat. even on the good tracks like when doves cry the eletronic drumming sounds terrible. we have the song purple rain here too, awesome track, astonishing solo, maybe saves the album a bit for me, but not enough. cant see the album growing on me eventually too. so sadly ill give it a 3, really dont get why people love it so much. what a fucking horrible cover too, those roses by the side ruin it. iconic but horrendous.

I'd like to be in a Roller Disco in the 80s listening to Prince, Michael Jackson and David Bowie. What a avant-garde, game changer album ! It really tells a story, like a movie, going through so many emotions and feelings.

It sounds like the cheesiest, most annoying kind of 80's music but executed in the best way possible. I think it's kind of a compliment. I can understand the fuss about it. (I don't like numeric ratings, I just give 3 to anyone)

Some really good songs here. Let’s Go Crazy, Take Me With U, I Would Die 4 U, When Doves Cry. I always thought Purple Rain (single version) was kind of a boring song. This version is even more so at 8+ minutes long. I suppose it’s an appropriate album ended though. Didn’t like the fake sounding drums.

I had heard of this notorious album but it struck me as I looked at the track list that I didn't really know anything about it. Pop is far from my favorite genre. But this fusion of synth and rock is clean. When Doves Cry definitely stands out as my favorite song. Purple rain (the song) dragged on a little bit.

A few great songs and some just OK

I truly do not understand the hype behind Prince. Amazing performer no doubt, but the music is pretty cookie cutter 80's pop. My two favourite tracks were Computer Blue and Baby I'm a Star, the least Prince sounding tracks on the album. I think I just don't like Prince.

Prince is not as big here in my country as he is elsewhere so I think this is the first time I hear the album in full. Even with the characteristic 80’s dreadful use of synths, this was a very good experience. The guitar is just fantastic. Great album.

Extremely talented multi-instrumentalist. Think you'd have to have been kicking around in the 80's to truly appreciate this for what it is but I enjoyed it nonetheless. Let's go crazy stood out to me as the song that's stood the test of time.

Is it perfect? No, but the title track "purple rain" is a certified classic and makes this album at least a 4/5

Ah, I'm gonna be completely biased about this album. 1 I very much grew up with. There are the obvious stand out tracks (Purple Rain, Let's go Crazy) backed up with a modicum of controversy (Darling Nikki) which make this the epitome of a naughty but ground breaking 80's, dare I say, masterpiece? The influence taken by Prince from James Brown, Sly Stone and who knows where, then mixed up and sent out through this album is simply amazing. Everything about this is 80's tastic with flare and colour in abundance. A momentous, monumental piece of complete genius out together and driven hard by a genius. Wonderful album. My 1st 5 star review.

I'm going to pick some fights but I had never listened to this album straight before; after doing so I feel this is completely overhyped. There's some good vocals and musical work but to call this a perfect album is a stretch. Some songs are very tight and solid but there are gaps.

This sounds *incredibly* dated, with the sole exception of the title track, which isn't dripping in 80s production values quite as much as the rest of the album. When Doves Cry is the one track where those production values... Sort of work. Surprisingly tough to listen to.

Scooby Doo music. I don't get why this is considered one of the greatest albums of all time. Annoying vocals, goofy instrumentals - my only enjoyment was getting to hear him ejaculate during the ending of "The Beautiful Ones". Might just be brain damage on my part though, sorry.

Pure 80s excess. This album is overflowing with ideas, each song is layers and layers of synths, huge reverby drums, virtuouso guitars, and charismatic vocals popping in and out of every range possible. It all (more or less) coheres around big catchy hooks and memorable choruses, then departs into extra codas, tacked on solos, refrains, and returns. The production and performances are so tight - its bursting at the seams and gloriously excessive without being distractingly busy or chaotic. It's obviously a pop album, but there's something ineffably wierd and singular about the conception and execution of these ideas that transcends genre.

Never listened to prince before this one. Sometimes I had to think of Anderson Paak listening to this. I acknowledge how much fun this album is, even though it does not naturally appeal to me.

The songs from this album that have remained popular since their release are, in my opinion, masterpieces of work. While the other songs are easily dimmed by them, I still found them entertaining and well made. But because they were so easily eclipsed, it almost made them just sound like background and/or filler. (My favorite songs from this album: Purple Rain obviously, When Doves Cry, Darling Nikki.) I wonder how my approach to this album would’ve changed if I had seen the Purple Rain movie before.

Very funky and poppy. Crazy guitar playing and catchy tunes. Way better than 1999 in my opinion, for which I misjudged my view on Prince. This album is pretty darn solid!

I was very excited for this, but I really didn’t vibe with it. It sounds incredibly dated. An amazing talent, for sure, but not something I’ll return to in a hurry. Couple of bangers, mind.

Listened Before? Yes Album Art: 2 / 5 never loved this album cover; feels like grandma's tablecloth meets cheesy 80s movie. I'm not the biggest Prince guy, but when he's on he's great. Let's Go Crazy starts us off on an upbeat dancing beat. Super processed (read as shitty sounding) electronic drums / percussion, but the guitar rips and mixing is quality. Take Me with U is kind of boring, but the orchestral elements are pretty and the drum fills (although kind of out of place) were pretty dope at the closing. Some solid fretwork on Computer Blue. I enjoy Darling Nikki; such a dirty and uniquely formatted song. This version jams so much more naturally than the Foo Fighters cover; also Prince's vocals carry the energy much better. When Doves Cry is a pop jam. Just a fantastic song that stands up well to the test of time. Sure the drums have that over-processed 80's tone, but that has come back in vogue. This sits in the mid-3 category pretty firmly for me. Quality production with some standout tracks (Darling Nikki, When Doves Cry) but for the most part I just didn't care very much. All time intro song on this album. Overall I think the singles do a lot of the heavy lifting on this album (seeing as 5 of the 9 songs are singles). I wish this was a deeper/more consistent album. Although the message of Purple Rain matches the rest of the album, but the tempo/style is kind of a mismatch. Still a banger of a song though. Overall I really enjoy the style of Prince with banging guitar solos mixed with some early electronica, but the middle of this album is kinda forgettable when you listen to it more critically. I feel like we are not far from some new musician gaining popularity by emulating and refining Prince's style. This is a 3.5 album, but I'm biasedly rounding it up because of how much I like the singles. If you got rid of the rest of the non-singles on this album I would have this in the 4 or 4.5 range.

Let's Go Crazy, When Doves Cry, and Purple Rain are all jams. The rest of the album really pulls the rating down though. Something about Prince screaming turns me off and the instrumentals in all of the other songs aren't as impressive to me as people make a deal of. I'll add I Would Die 4 U on the good song list as well. Also Goose just did a cover of it at Red Rocks a couple weeks ago which they absolute crush. I don't get the Price hype, but this album is definitely better than the first one we listened to months and months ago.

Prince always makes me think of my friend Sarah (English) and of the gym. They play a lot of Prince. I don't really like when songs open or close with talking I don't need Prince screaming at me in The Beautiful Ones. Good guitar and overall good songs. I liked Darling Nikki. When Doves Cry plays at the gym all the time. The throaty opening sounds like something that Ryan would play for me in the car. Purple Rain doesn't do much for me but it's a classic.

let's go crazy has fun vibes towards the end, solid start to the album. a great album for an indoor roller rink geared towards old people. he has an odd, kind of strained voice that idk if I like. The beautiful ones is real groovy and chill, I like this one. Has a more modern sound, considering it's from the 80's, a real timelessness in some songs more than others. he has a lot of fun with that electric guitar in computer blue, and in a few other songs too. you can tell that electric / computer type music is a pretty new thing that they are still figuring out. Mentioned this before but I can not stand shrieking vocals, if prince didn't do this I would like the album a lot more. purple rain is a very popular song but I have never listened to it, it's not my favorite on this album but it's nice. I would not choose to put on this album but I would be totally fine listening to it. I respect it as objectively skilled and well made art.

When doves cry is decent but I'm really not a fan of any of his music. It's very jumbled disjointed and filled with voids. I generally don't like how slow yet fast paced each song is. It's just not my type of music but I can appreciate that Prince was very influencial and important in his time. These songs play quietly in consignment store at 6:45pm while the employees consider the sweet release of a semi truck.

Let's Go Crazy has a cool intro. I'd like to see more albums with intros like this one. Take Me with U sounds like something that would play over the credits to a 90s kids TV show. Not in a good way. I'm being yelled at on The Beautiful Ones. What is even happening on Computer Blue? Darling Nikki is not great... For "pop" music I'm not really sure how this would have been popular. I'm not into the screaming, falsetto, creaky voice, or other weird vocals. Was Prince the Pharrell of the 80s? There's a couple of bops on here that I'm fine to listen to a couple times a year. Didn't enjoy listening to the album as a whole.

Reviews are interesting. I think I most agree with the view that it is not a totally memorable album in the sense of a classic you keep returning to. More of a 4 star. However in the context of this list it may deserve 5.

Good album, but mastering was sometimes very jarring. Prince is songwriting god, it was engaging throughout the whole longplay. Innovative, albeit sometimes a bit too eccentric. This album is proof, that he was more talented than Michael Jackson, but wanted to kill too many birds with one stone.

Still one of my favorite albums of all time, start to finish. Great stuff.

There isn't anything I'm going to write that will match the greatness of this record. Prince's achievement in 1984 still amazes me. A 10 star cultural impact, and yet, only a 4.5 stars music album for me.

Only decent song was When Doves Cry. Most is boring. The mouth noises are very annoying.
