Reviews (page 13 of 14)

This album bolts out of the blocks with Let’s Go Crazy…then falls flat on its face for the next couple of songs. What on earth was he thinking? The promise is partly fulfilled in later songs, and When Doves Cry (cranked up on our car trip home) sounds as fresh and epic as ever. I have to say, though, the title track still seems interminable to me, no matter how much I focus on enjoying particular aspects of it.

Not really a fan. I've always heard people saying how good Prince is, but I don't really like it. Seems like a pretty average 80s album to me.

Quite a few hits on this one, let's go crazy, when doves cry, and purple rain. Overall not a bad album.

This album does not have my favourite bits of Prince essence on it. I say that because I am not someone who knows all the Prince catalogue inside out by any means and I've never listened to full albums so I'm no authority on Prince. I absolutely love some tracks: Computer Blue, When Doves Cry, Purple Rain, Baby I'm a Star. BUT I don't love every part of those songs haha. Some of the more chaotic sounds are super painful to my soul and confusing to my brain, however the vocals, the less busy 80s synthy sounds, the INSANE guitar solos sing to my soul. So I'm conflicted. Love the juicy 80s-ness but find some sounds stressful. I want to give a 3.5 but I can't!

I've never been a massive Prince fan. Tried to get into him a few times but it's never clicked really. He was a phenomenal guitarist (video of him doing While My Guitar Gentle Weeps with all the famous people is insanely good) but I just don't feel that comes through on this album, except in a very small segments. I think it's all too 80s for me but I appreciate it.

I think this works better as a soundtrack than a cohesive album

The songs I like, I really like. The others are a bit boring for me.

I liked this a lot more than the last one — more rock less funkiness. Take me with U was a surprise favorite, but I feel like I would have enjoyed someone else’s version of it more that leaned even more into the “take me with you” and had a larger chorus centered around it — something a Madonna would have done perhaps. But also if life means forever how the fuck is there an after life?

Epic opener, majestic. Very 80s sounding, but I do know that Prince pioneered that very sound, fits well with the decade. Purple Rain may be the greatest song of the 1980s in my opinion. The rest are a little more forgettable aside from When Doves Cry. I'd give the album another 6.5-7/10.

3.5/5 The song purple rain is truly a masterpiece, the album was for me less good than expected. When doves cry is another great songs, but the other ones didn’t get to me. Overall I enjoyed it, but my expectations were higher. Favourite songs: - When dives cry - Purple rain

I like the song I like.

7 / 10

The Album title is probably my favorite song off of this. It's a decent album, but just as the cover for it, it's lacking harmony at times. I would give it another listen probably later, because I think it deserves a second listen to fully get into the mood of the album. 3/5

First thing I don't like is the drum machine beat lol. That stuff is hard for me to listen to for some reason. However, disregarding that, it's pretty good. Kind of a more "rock" Michael Jackson. Not my thing, but I can see why it's considered a classic.

This was a fun ride with an emotional finish. It wasn't as captivating as I'd hoped, but I imagine it will grow on me.

It is what I expected going in but there’s some stuff that I feel aged in a way that come off kinda lame. There’s enough highs to make up tho

It’s okkkkk

Purple rain live is a great version

Good, still not convinced of Prince

Prince is definitely the sound of the 80s but unfortunately he's just never been for me. I don't know if it's the genre itself, or his songs being too busy for the singing, or something about the lack of "sing-along-ness" his music has always held for me but I just don't enjoy his music

Today I learned I only really enjoy Prince’s radio hits. Wtf is Darling Nikki???

Laid back album. Not in love with the 80s sound, but some iconic tunes here.

I've always appreciated Prince but never loved his songs. On this album, I'm impressed with the fact he plays so many instruments (the guitar wickedly) & I like his layered and varied production. It's an ambitious project, but the song-writing doesn't grab me, outside of When Doves Cry.

Prince is crazy

Prince' music has never really appealed to me, with a few exceptions. This album also has a couple of good songs, including When Doves Cry and the title song, but as a whole, I'm still not really digging it.

Fun album, first time really listening to Prince other than Purple Rain.

What an opener. Rest of it overblown and dated.

When doves cry is a classic with an awesome intro. Outside of that not much jumped out for me. Not bad though

3.5. Some great songs but honestly found most of it kind of dull

Never quite got the Prince hype. The American David Bowie, for me.

Pretty good, but a bit synth-poppy; lacking in guitar, which he shreds and usually allows him to rip purer pinnacle songs

Best Song: When Doves Cry. I really don't think anyone other than Prince could make this song work. Everything about it is killer: the layered vocals, the introspective lyrics, that slow grinding groove. Worst Song: The Beautiful Ones. Too sleepy and synthy. Doesn't meet the energy of the songs that come before or after. I do like the raw vocals at the end though. Overall: It's hard not to love Prince's goddamn charisma. The best songs on this album sound like pure Purple energy. Prince sounds like Michael Jackson if MJ had a soul. Even still, there is a pretty sizable gulf between the massive heights that the singles reach and the comparatively far weaker songs that fill the rest of the album.

6/10 Best Song - Purple Rain

As much respect as I have for prince I could never really get into the 80s pop rock sound. That said love the guitar work

Too much screaming...

Some cool things done throughout the album, quite unique to me at least. "Purple Rain" the best song for me.

Some good songs but also a few wacky ones

I don't think I get it but I wish I did. Instrumentals are fantastic.

Almost a 4 but not quite. Too many skipable tracks

One stone cold classic, bolstered by two or three other strong tracks but the rest is tripe

Totally overproduced, the songs are so well regarded but I just don’t rate this.

I can’t

meh, there are some fun poppy songs but, it's just not my style at all. i'm sure some of the stuff he was doing is NOW overdone but wasn't then?

Purple Rain (song) is a masterpiece. When Doves Cry makes me want to shake. I like Let’s Go Crazy. I Would Die for You is decent. The rest is mostly forgettable.

Average Some good songs, some are less

Saved Prior: When Doves Cry Off Rip: Let's Go Crazy, Darling Nikki, I Would Die 4 U Cutting Edge: None Overall Notes: Other than the songs I saved (and I LOVE When Doves Cry) I didn't really care for this. *ducks and dodges tomatoes flying in from all directions* That being said it wasn't bad and Prince sells this as well as he can. Was split between a high 3 and low 4 and went with the 3. *yanked off stage by a cane*

Not real deep idk

Like his work….

A couple of absolute incredible tracks aside much of this album I struggle with and, frankly, don’t enjoy. Typical Prince imho

Three stars for each of the good tracks on this literal mixed bag of an album.

One stone cold classic, bolstered by two or three other strong tracks but the rest is pretty turgid

La mera verdad no soy tan fanss.

Very good but moat of its strength comes from When Doves Cry and Purple Rain. The rest of the album is good but pales in conoarison to those two hits.

Very interesting. I know Prince was a big thing and this was my first time listening to him. Not sure if it's I'm not in the mood or different age but I didn't love it. It was just okay

A few jams, but did not sound revolutionary to me

One of those albums I feel like I'm supposed to appreciate, but I just can't get into it. Most of it just feels so 80s pop. When Doves Cry is an amazing track though, as is the title track.

This was ok, already got it in my collection but might convince me to dig it out more often!

CHOCOLATE RAINNN

When he's on it he's really on it and on it he is on several here.

i especially like the beautiful ones and prince's screaming in it is top notch when dooooves cryyyy i like the songs more n more as the album proceeds

Eh. Purple rain is so great to end w. Liked some em

This album kinda annoyed me other than fhe title track. 1st listen for me.

Okay this is pretty epic

Hmmm. Singles are the best. Amazing musicianship throughout. Would I listen again? Probably not.

Some good songs & some bad songs.

Loved some of it, but the rest was a little disappointing.

idk wish I liked this more but it's pretty 80s sounding, it's really just not my thing. RIP Prince

Objectively, a good listen. Dramatic. Personally prefer Prince’s earlier work.

Reminds me of scorpions and that kind of music. Nice vibes

Listened to it while studying. Didn't make much of an impression. Will have to listen to it with more attention the next time.

I wanted to like this a lot more than I did. It was okay.

A bit hit or miss. Lots of variety.

this was a great album

I get why people like Prince, but in general I am not a fan of pop so this is just "okay" for me personally. In terms of general consensus and historical purposes it would be a 5 for sure, but enjoyment is just "ok" for me. Always feels a bit corny for me.

For the fame this album created, it's only 9 songs. It always reminds me of the 80s and the Purple Reign junk associated to Marion's basketball success. Take Me with U and The Beautiful Ones...they bleed into each other so easily I'm not sure I even heard Take Me with U. I Would Die 4 U - best song on the album.

Don't understand the hype behind the album, of course When Doves Cry, and Purple Rain hold their own. 3 stars for the use of trashcans.

I gave this a few listens, and while I can appreciate the musicianship and songwriting, this unique, new wave-y blend of rock, pop, and R&B just isn't my sort of music.

Appreciated the artistry, but unfortunately did not enjoy it too much, except for a few songs.

When Doves Cry is pretty fantastic, but overall this is an album where I really dont see the hype. Seems like nothing really that special to me. Not a bad album, but not something that I really plan to come back to.

Pretty talented guy. Wish he was still around.

Just hooting and hollering

4+ / 10

Listened twice and I don't get the hype. It was fine but I didn’t like the screeching. Purple Rain and When Doves Cry were OK. Rest I just found kind of boring. Wouldn't listen again. 2/5 stars

Tried to listen. I guess the songs were such hits that they almost feel like background elevator music to me and it’s hard to take seriously. Also was trying to workout and was next to tornado fan so not a truly fair shot

I like When Doves Cry, and Purple Rain is fantastic, but i don't rate this as an album. Most songs forgettable.

Did you know prince was just one guy? two obvious standout tracks, but otherwise shant return. clearly exceptionally talented beyond belief though!!

Some good ones but overall I am not a big fan. The title track is the standout

I really love the title song of this album, excited to hear the rest! The other songs are very different I have to say. Fav song is ‘Purple Rain’.

Such promise provided by the first track. Nothing backs it up until BIAS and PR. Prime length

Been there, Done that.

This is not bad album, but it's just not the kind of music I'm into or looking for at the moment. I could see myself liking this album more if I listened to it again at a later time

Yeah sorry I don't get the hype

M’ouais

Very dated, awful keyboard and synths throughout. Trying to sound like the future before the future has been determined has backfired massively here. Great production, some nicely structured songs, but it's a horrid listen to me. Second Prince album and it's two misses for me, I'm not getting the hype.

genuinely thought ts was way better than it actually is

The second Prince album recommended from the list - and I am still no more swayed. I just don't like his voice and the music is at best - meh. I know I'm in the minority, but it just isn't for me.

It's not terrible but I'm just not into 80s pop

not that great, music all over the place, very exhausting to listen to. but purple rain is good, ohrwurm material i can see why others like it but not my cup of tea

Idk if I'm crazy but I only truly liked Purple Rain. Nine songs, so the album is a 1/9 for me. (Not the actual rating but the amount of songs I like).

Boy, I am going to catch some heat for this. I’ve already listened to this album a couple times before and I didn’t feel inclined to make listen #3. I think he’s talented as a guitarist but I just can’t get the hype. I’ve made good faith efforts listening to his albums and it’s not for me.

Not my thing

I listened to two first Prince albums beforehand as I was interested in the fact that he basically recorded all music by himself. Unfortunately, the compositions and songs itself don't sit with me well.

I remember trying to listen to Prince when I was younger and not liking what I heard. My dad would make references to Purple Rain all the time, so I thought it had to be good, surely. With this relisten, ~15 years later, I was hoping it was just my crappy teenage taste. I still don't find myself liking this unfortunately. I have to stan this icon on paper, at least, if not by ear.

Sorry not sorry to the Prince lovers, but this guy is a wanker. Ok, sure, he was a talented musician, but I never have and never will enjoy his style of music. I never listened to this album in full before and I never will again, I cringed so much during Darling Nikki. What a dirty hornbag.

The songs on this album have that typical 80s synthy sound with the added effect of sounding what I would describe as grand (it is a soundtrack for a movie, after all). Funnily enough, I was already familiar with "Darling Nikki" because I had first heard the Foo Fighters cover it before listening to the original (I like the extra instrumentation on this song). Overall, I'm generally not into this style of music but I can appreciate why it's on this list. Prince's singing voice and skilled use of guitar, drums, and synths elevate the songs and make them stand out from all of the other stereotypical 80s fare (particularly the guitar work). "Purple Rain" is a beautiful closer to the album, especially the ending minute of the song. I'm rating it a 2 simply because it's just not my thing, though.

I've tried to like Prince and I just can't. This wasn't terrible, but still not for me

Prince Mild < Prince Sykt kjedelig. Æ tar med mæ Computer Blue, da den ga litt DEVO-vibes, men resten treng æ aldri høre igjen. Sterk toer.

Some Song's where cool, some not my jam. 5/10

Only purple rain is good

Purple Rain and When Doves Cry pull it up from a 1 star, but the rest all sounds the same.

Repetitive and quite boring, not helped by the incredibly dated production. 1.5

I know I am going against popular opinion, but Prince just isn't for me.

Me. And my Rat family

First time listening to this. Well, it's nice, but it didn't scratch my brain on the right way. I wouldn't say I didn't like it, but I don't think I'll be listening to this album again. The only track that did something for me was Purple Rain. And I even went back to hear again some of most listened songs, and nothing. If someone is reading this, please don't cancel me, I swear I have a decent music taste 😭

I’ve tried several times to get into Prince, but he’s one of those artists that leaves me wondering if I’m hearing something different from everyone else (Kanye West being another of those artists). I’ve heard nothing but praise for how genius this album supposedly is, but to me it just sounds repetitive & (dare I say it?) boring. The mix doesn’t even sound balanced to me… there’s so much treble that it grates on the ears after a while, especially on the songs with the screeching vocals. I prefer the 2015 remaster for this reason. Sure, these songs are catchy but they aren't songs I enjoy having stuck in my head. I do like the energetic one-two punch of "I Would Die 4 U" and "Baby I'm a Star". However, I actively dislike the over-indulgent title track, and getting through its nearly 9 repetitive minutes is a real chore.

Okay, some decent guitaring.

Sonically impressive and great guitarist but as an album I just don’t get the hype

Very 80s sounding

I liked purple rain but did it really need to be so long?

MJ drags his balls along Prince’s chin

It's so dated.

I appreciate Prince's talent and several of these songs are very nostalgic to me. However, as hard as I've tried over the years, I just don't like it.

Cool albumn but I don't like this use of electric sounds

disappointing tbh

Didn’t like. Only last song ok

A Darling Nikki faz lembrar Vampire Weekend.

When doves cry is a song I always start off thinking I love and then get bored of by the end, much like this whole album. Perhaps the most interesting part was when I misread "Baby I'm a Star" as "Baby I'm a Slur" which did have me guessing which slur Prince would officially identify with through song

Any album that includes Let's Go Crazy and When Doves Cry ain't going to be a one star record. However, I didn't hear much else on here to make me want to go back and listen again. That 80s electrofunk sound isn't for me.

I know some people absolutely love Prince but aside from some of the hits I wasn’t that impressed.

O-ver ra-ted

Mehhhhh

lets go crazy - 4.5/5, great opener take me with you -> darling nikki - honestly filler, forgettable, at most 2.5/5 when doves cry - was very excited for this one, VERY let down, super repetitive i would die 4 u - also very repetitive, repeat the mistakes of the songs above baby im a star - HORRID production, the drums give me a headache purple rain - thank GOD this is here, one of the greatest songs ever, 5/5

Shocker. Didn't know Prince sounded like so. Not my vibe. Fantastic guitars.

doesn't prince have some bangers? second album on here where i've been so unimpressed by my inability to nod along to anything here. other than the titular song which is a bop. disappointed so far by my experience of this legendary artist

Legendary song and legendary album

Very mid. Don't get the appeal.

Another album on this list because it has a couple of hits on it, but that, **as an album**, for me, doesn't really work. Even the hits are pretty thin and lack soul to my ears. That's probably its age – that horribly thin electronic drum sound even makes me cringe on Purple Rain, which is the only track that's really solid (maybe I'm the only person on the planet who doesn't like When Doves Cry, I don't know; maybe Prince is in the same ballpark as Dylan: I prefer it when other people do his songs). So, thin, dated, lacking soul, and lacking depth. The hits range from half decent to a bit meh, but the supporting album tracks are a bit shit (see also, The Beatles). The cover's not bad though. I prefer this to Thriller, but then I hate Thriller with an absolute passion and gave it a 1. So, I've likened this to Dylan, The Beatles, and Jackson. Many people would say that's good company. So obviously it's a 2 then.

Overblown, nauseating 1980s toss for the most part, plainly trying so hard to be weird yet it somehow manages to be utterly vacuous for much of its running time. A few interesting ideas - a broken clock is right a couple of times a day, I guess, but I've no inclination to revisit the complete package whatsoever.

pas trop aimé

Ikkje så dumt

Some nice melodies, but nothing for me personally

sorry m8. this horny little man is not 4 me.

I find most everything in poor taste: overwrought, bombastic, too much of everything. I can see it's appeal, but it's not for me.

This was a pop album for sure, but it was not bad. Prince was a weird and cool dude, huh?

I think I just don't really like Prince? (2-3) Favorite on the album: Baby, I'm a Star

It seems that the term overrated was reinforced by this album.

Very excessive, especially the title track's runtime. I found this album middling between his Sign O' the Times and 1999. Therefore a middling score.

I don’t like prince

Two decent tracks but otherwise the album seems to drag a bit. Order of songs is also chaotic, not a huge fan.

Darling Nikki, Purple Rain, and When Doves Cry are obvious classics and they’re still inspiring people today. The rest of the album stopped inspiring things anything after Sonic - Spring Yard Zone (which is actually prefer. I never listened to Prince before and this album won’t change that.

I’m starting to think I don’t like prince that much

Not for me

This was a pretty punishing listen. I have heard a lot about Prince, 'the guitar player's, but a lot of his work on this is awful 80s soloing. His vocals were quite whiney and I didn't really enjoy it. Yes, Purple Rain and Doves Cry are catchy enough, but it doesn't do much to make up for the rest of the album. 2 Stars

This album has the only two Prince songs that I sort of like - Purple Rain and When Doves Cry. He's a great guitarist and charismatic performer, but his studio albums don't do it for me. The songs are so frantic.

Didn’t like it much except for the obvious tracks….

Prince round 2. I don't know... the production on the whole doesn't hold up for me. Having previously gotten "sign o' the times", I think that Prince does kooky significantly better than radio friendly. Some good moments of course. Ever so slightly boring, but zaniness was on the horizon. Best tunes: computer blue, i would die 4 u, baby i'm a star, purple rain

2 Stars (5/15)

Quite strange; every cover I've heard of a Prince song has been better than his original. Knowles, O'Connor, etc. Maybe I just don't like HIM?

Not much wrong with it other than I will never ever listen to it again. Favorite track is probably purple rain.

An iconic 80s album. But I just can't get behind it. Many of the songs are pretty catchy, some are brilliant. But the whole album is just so smug and self-important. It's over-produced, too many instruments, too many sounds, but even then, it's hard to say if there are any real instruments on the album or if its all just synths. I've never been a fan, but wanted to give it another try and I still feel the same. Overhyped and overdone.

After the last prince album we had I kinda thought maybe that just wasn't a great one and the next would be better..... But, after this one, which I assume is considered his best, I think I can conclude that I'm just not a prince fan. I've seen videos of him and he was clearly an incredible guitarist and musician, but the music doesn't do it for me. Purple rain is the best track, when doves cry is ok. None of the rest did much for me. Sorry prince 2

A few good songs and quite a few less good ones, all totally dominated by horrible 80's drum mixes. Purple Rain is a brilliant song, but that doesn't save this.

I understand that most people hate this take, but this has everything I don’t like about 80s music. Weird production, everything is overly dramatized, and image seems more important than substance. Prince is very talented but our tastes don’t have much in common.

A little bit hard to listen to this. Except the main song "Purple rain"

I feel bad for giving this such a low rating but it just did not move me. I understand why it's so beloved, I just found it exhausting. Sorry.

Not a prince fan.

Over rated

fun fact, I share a birthday with Prince. I do not share his taste in music, but still a decent album.

I like the guitar work and the solos, but the cheesy 80s pop shit and the unrivalled horniness of Prince I just cannot enjoy whatsoever

I do get the significance, and I do know the talent and honestly, he's just an ICON for sure... however... ugh, half this album is so annoying, honestly.

Some nice songs

………..i’m sure it was groundbreaking once. Can recognise Prince’s talent and influence but yikes

I really want to like Prince just for his persona and was hoping this album would feature anything I can point to and go "I might not like purple rain, but this is great". Sadly, it doesn't. I don't know what it is with Prince's music, but it just doesn't faze me at all. All I hear are frustratingly generic 80s synth pop beats and the occasional good guitar solo.

I gave this a listen, but it confirmed that I'm not a Prince fan. I do think that he was a very good guitar player.

It captures the 80’s perfectly in its sound, but considering it came out two years after Michael Jackson’s thriller it seems a bit mediocre. Also fairly corny.

Come To conclusion I don’t like Prince and this overall importance. I get an intro but seems like every songs take 30 seconds to a minute to get going. I hate things that try to sound self important. His screaming hurt my ears. If it wasn’t for the title track this be getting a 1/5. Sorry Prince but not a fan 2/5

Hi honestly not my fav for some reason? I only like 3 songs

It's alright. Definitely listenable, but I didn't really feel as though I got anything from listening to this one outside of a few songs that I've heard in passing. The spread of genres is pretty interesting. If the R&B/funk roots were trimmed I could see myself liking this one.

Not for me

I did not like this album one bit

Unknown to me aside from the couple hits. Very electronic. Would definitely describe as experimental. Lyrics to Darling Nikki caught me by surprise.

I liked it, or maybe not...

I refuse to apologize for the fact that I don't like 80s synth pop, overly dramatic screaming or having every song be about about sex. This album has plenty of all three. I get it: Prince is a musical genius. I just don't want to listen to it.

I liked, or maybe not...

It was fine. Must have been a bigger deal at the time, but by current standards it's just fine.

Never been a fan of the Purple Prince, too poptastic and alternately bland for me, great musician, guitarist and producer though he was. Purple Rain the track is a highlight for so many, including many well respected artists but to me it’s a bit of a drone. Sorry 😂

Do you like background music more than the lyrics? If so, then this is the album for you! The lyrics are just horrible in my opinion and his voice is not good. The instruments are amazing, and have a good baseline. The guitar is my favorite part of the songs. So that is why if you like background music more than the lyrics, I recommend that you listen to this album.

Do you like upbeat music? R&B/Soul? If so, this album is for you! But in my opinion, I don't really like this album. I feel like it's because I can't tell what the lead singer is saying, and because I feel like the background music is a little two over the top. I mean they are good, but I feel like they are bigger than the lyrics. I only recommend this album if you like upbeat R&B/Soul, and pop/rock music, but if you don't I recommend that you don't listen to this album.

I think this album is okay. I like the beat but the lyrics are a bit repetitive and are hard to understand at some points. If you do like soul music though, I recommend it.

Today, I find it even more annoying than when it was released.

29:16 of filler and 14:35 of hits. I’ve never listened to Prince before aside the obvious hits and any Dave Chapelle bits. I was throughly disappointed with the rest of this album it was a drag to sit through, I don’t think a single additional track stood out to me or was particularly catchy. Meh record.

Clearly one of the few who cannot stand Prince’s music.

Fairly annoying.

This album didn't really do much for me. The hits I'd heard and they're fine but the rest just didn't resonate very much. Obvious disclaimer, the man can play guitar.

Je n'accroche pas des masses

I don't understand pop or he doesn't want to understand me, especially the 80s, it's just fucking like, I don't understand all this. Maybe there are exceptions and I forgot, but definitely not this in . Yes, the influence on music and pop and non-pop and the appearance of electronics on such platinum albums and how it should all be shown, etc., etc., but fucking it was the hardest 87 minutes of my life. Yes, I'll listen to him twice!

I don't get it. At most it's an okay pop album.

- least favorite album so far, just not a fan of the funky pop - guitar solos in when doves cry were pretty cool

Not a huge Prince guy. Nothing on here was all that bad but it’s not something I’ll revisit. Even purple rain doesn’t really do it for me. Songs feel disjointed or just outright weird and for a guy who’s incredible at guitar he really doesn’t do a lot of guitar playing. Tons of drum machines. Some would say too many

I can appreciate Prince's genius. I understand his influence and achievements. With that out of the way this album did not do it for me. I liked the obvious tracks Let's Go Crazy, When Doves Cry, and Purple Rain but with the other tracks I fought the urge to hit 'next'. A great album should not bring about those urges.

Purple rain is full of ideas. Some work, most don’t. First two and last two tracks are terrible. But there are a couple of songs in the middle I enjoy parts of. But all song structures are weird. No track work as a whole. As soon as I find something I like there is the next moment or track to ruin it. Prince is a burst of creativity lacking cohesion. His ideas are everywhere but they are just so fleeting, never fully explored, always on to the next thing. ADHD in music form. Purple rain feels both extremely dated and uniquely weird. I understand that some people love him. Songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, star quality etc. But I can’t understand the near universal acclaim. There must be a lot of people NOT liking Prince? I mean, thin drum machines, eighties synths and electric guitar wailing can’t be everybody’s cup of tea? Although I have started to understand that funk with pop appeal has maintained a huge mainstream audience for decades, and that Prince fits the bill for a renaissance in contemporary American culture I still don’t get it. For example, his contemporaries Madonna and MJ have a lot more big hits that still work today. I’ll just have to accept that I’m in the minority here, that this is not for me.

Loved this album as a youngster. Found it to be a disappointing listen now.

No me gusta jajaja

I like 2 tracks. Just don’t really get it.

Not a fan. Some bits sounded like genesis. Derivative

Ugh. Prince sucks. Talented guy but so what.

Not my jam

Lets go crazy, nej. Inte bra. Förvånande dålig. Take me with U, inte särskilt bra heller. The beautiful ones, nej nej nej Computer blue, nej Darling Nikki, ansvarig för PAEC When does cry, nja. Men bäst hittills. Otroligt 80-tal Orkar inte kommentera resten. Är iaf väldigt besviken på Prince. Purple rain är den enda bra låten. Tidlös.

Vähän mitäänsanomatonta. Purple Rain on ok. Muuten aika mid. Parhaat: Purple Rain

Over rated

I suppose it’s great if you like Prince.

Overblown, boring

I only listened to the first few songs so I really do need to finish. Prince is one of those artists that people with really great taste love, and I I just don’t get it. This time around I didn’t enjoy what I heard, but this is clearly a me problem.

Good, not my cup of tea.

Lahmer Funk-Pop.

still dont really get this. listened 2x. 2.4/5

Didn’t like the album as others might have did, wasn’t the biggest fan of ‘The Beautiful Ones’, just sounded uncomfortable to me. I was able to feel the talent, just was not convinced that this is one of the greatest albums of all time. His guitar performance for ‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps’ is one of the best live performances ever, I’ll give him that.

This album is turning 40 years old this year just like me! I can appreciate that Prince had a huge impact of music and was an incredibly talented musician - but this music/album just doesn't do it for me at all! I did enjoy 'When doves cry', it makes me nostalgic for the Quindon Tarver cover on the Romeo + Juliet sounds track. I wish I could rate it higher, but I really didn't enjoy the album and don't see myself listening to it again. So 1 star for the album and a bonus star for the influence Prince had on pop music.

Gotta be honest, I don’t think Prince is as good as he gets credit for. As a performer, he was larger than life (though actually quite short! Few know this). Talented musician, unique, but does that make him a good songwriter? I actually find the majority of this album annoying and unlistenable. I would honestly never put this on and listen to the whole album. It’s a shame that the album’s title track and finale is lumped in with the rest of this, because Purple Rain single handedly outscores the rest of the album combined. The moment he comes in with his trademark falsetto in the solo… chills, no matter how many times I hear it. Makes sense that it’s the last song, because what could follow that?

Honestly, I stopped partway through. Every song sounded the same to me. And if you already don't care for Prince's style that's kind of a death knell for the album.

Just a couple songs.

Rock avec changement de rythme fréquents

not terrible. not great either.

Didn't really land with me

80s, pop, erster track ganz ok, naja geht so.. when doves cry ist nicht schlecht

Very 80s. Somewhat unique, but just not my style. I'm not a fan of falsetto and 80s music in general. Apparently this is the album responsible for Tipper Gore's campaign to have parental advisory stickers. I guess I'm glad I listened to it so I know what Prince is all about, but I probably won't ever listen to this again.

Mostly pretty cringe. The lyrics are pretty horrendous. The production is ok, but doesn't hold up

I truly do not understand the hype behind Prince. Amazing performer no doubt, but the music is pretty cookie cutter 80's pop. My two favourite tracks were Computer Blue and Baby I'm a Star, the least Prince sounding tracks on the album. I think I just don't like Prince.

This sounds *incredibly* dated, with the sole exception of the title track, which isn't dripping in 80s production values quite as much as the rest of the album. When Doves Cry is the one track where those production values... Sort of work. Surprisingly tough to listen to.

Scooby Doo music. I don't get why this is considered one of the greatest albums of all time. Annoying vocals, goofy instrumentals - my only enjoyment was getting to hear him ejaculate during the ending of "The Beautiful Ones". Might just be brain damage on my part though, sorry.

Can't get behind prince

Purple rain the song is OK but the rest really not my cup of tea

When doves cry is decent but I'm really not a fan of any of his music. It's very jumbled disjointed and filled with voids. I generally don't like how slow yet fast paced each song is. It's just not my type of music but I can appreciate that Prince was very influencial and important in his time. These songs play quietly in consignment store at 6:45pm while the employees consider the sweet release of a semi truck.

Let's Go Crazy has a cool intro. I'd like to see more albums with intros like this one. Take Me with U sounds like something that would play over the credits to a 90s kids TV show. Not in a good way. I'm being yelled at on The Beautiful Ones. What is even happening on Computer Blue? Darling Nikki is not great... For "pop" music I'm not really sure how this would have been popular. I'm not into the screaming, falsetto, creaky voice, or other weird vocals. Was Prince the Pharrell of the 80s? There's a couple of bops on here that I'm fine to listen to a couple times a year. Didn't enjoy listening to the album as a whole.

Too much eighties and dancy.

Honestly was disappointed with this one. Knowing the famous songs made me think it would be a great album, but I didn't really enjoy most of it.

two good songs.

Not a vibe

I like the songs Prince has written for other artists and don't disagree that he is a virtuoso, but his own work is just not my jam.

This is more the sound I associate Prince with. Unfortunately, still not good. Purple Rain is so incredibly overrated

i didnt really like it..

2/5 Best: Purple Rain Worst: Darling Nikki

Best part of this album was when it ended and The Go-Go’s came on

the hits are hits, but otherwise too '80s sound

prima niet mijn smaak

I wasn't really looking forward to this one and sure enough it was just as bad as I remembered. I had to endure this album being played over and over by friends when it first came out and it hasn't aged well. I was glad to get to the end of it. There are a few tracks that are okay, plus a lot of filler, shrieking, bad guitar. Not my kind of music. Very 1980s; best left in the 1980s. I do actually like a few songs by Prince. I like his earlier stuff, also some of his later albums. I still remember the outrage when he appeared at some music awards ceremony and wasn't humble enough for the UK press. That has to be worth a star or two I suppose.

Well I listened to it. I liked it. Nothing terribly special. I had some notes in here earlier that got wiped away. I'll try to remember what I wrote. I think it was something along the lines of. I couldn't name a single Prince song, and that I know he was a big deal, and that this album was a big deal. I saw a video of him jammin out to guitar one time, and was really surprised how awesome it was. He can really jam! the first track had an awesome finale. The rest of the album I listened to at the gym so I wasn't totally tuned in. Purple rain was def catchy. And supposedly John was listening to that song this morning. What a quinky dink.

I did not enjoy the other songs. Purple rain really stands out and the other songs are just not that good and that someone that loves guitar. Also, whats up with the screaming bits? Seems out of place.

I'm going to try my hardest going into this album with a blank and unbiased opinion until I hear the music. I do not think that I am the target audience of Prince's music to be honest. I have heard the songs "Purple Rain" and a cover of "Darling Nikki" before, but not the original. Having listened to "Purple Rain" again, I think it's an ok song. I can understand why people would enjoy his music, and I think he was a super talented musician, his work is just not for me. I am willing to give other albums of his a chance, but I am not optimistic that I will enjoy them.

Prince oli niin kiva viimeksi. Kivuus mennyt jonnekkin. Teeppä parempaa musiikkia ja viihdytä paremmin.

I fucking despise Prince, its not a bad album, but I still dislike him

Only a few really stood out to me but they definitely represent a certain time in music history

Vooral When doves cry is een lekker cheesy '80's nummer.
