As much as I want to like Prince, I just never fully gel with his sound. This album has one extremely erotic song, “when doves cry” and “purple rain” that are memorable

It's funny for this album to pop up now; I was thinking a couple days ago about how I have literally never listened to Prince and was curious what makes him such a popular artist. I've always assumed it had more to do with his persona and showmanship than his actual music. While I knew he was considered a good guitar player, I was not expecting virtuoso-esque licks in his songs. Regardless, I am definitely still not vibing with it. I have never been a fan of 80's synth/pop, and this is pretty much fits the bill. Weird to me that Foo Fighters covered a prince song. Not really a fan of either, just interesting. I do not understand how Purple Rain is a popular song. I want to give this a 2 star rating because of my own personal tastes, but this leads me to the thought of how my rating system is going to operate across these albums..... I have to also consider cultural significance and , so I'll probably give it a 3 instead.

I really don't like Prince in general, which is why it pains me to admit that this is a fantastic album.

Prince commands a sound that is uniquely his as is his persona. This album is one of the most complete ones I've listened to. An album that should be listened to from top to bottom all the way through and doing so you get a full picture of Prince's presence. The synths, guitar riffs, and Prince's voice all give this an album that defined the 80s.

A little overrated - there are some weak songs.

As I heard so much about this album I was expecting much more musically. Don't get me wrong, I get the praise and it's a very grand spectacle overall, but the sound just come as generic 80s pop rock to me. If I listened to it growing up the impact would certainly be different, but listening nowadays the sound of it was already so overused that it just don't satnd out to me. That said, the album has a lot of personality, Prince shows to be a very talented musician and there are some bangers in it, the title track being actualy amazing.

Honestly was disappointed with this one. Knowing the famous songs made me think it would be a great album, but I didn't really enjoy most of it.

Wow. A classic album that everybody should listen to once in their life. I'd heard of Prince but I had never taken the time to listen to his discs. Loved most songs, especially (perhaps unsurprisingly) 'Purple Rain'.

Some legendary stuff but a couple of songs not so good that see it fall short of a 5.

First side of this album is good, but not great (Let's Go Crazy aside). Second half is an absolute masterpiece. Purple Rain the best album closer of all time? Don't think we've had much better so far, close to 600 albums in. I think it's probably about level with Sign O' The Times - that had the more varied, more interesting overall sound, Purple Rain has the bigger individual hits. 4/5.

It's Prince at his best. This album has not one, not two, but three of the best pop songs ever written (Let's Go Crazy, When Doves Cry, Purple Rain), and the rest of the album definitely isn't filler! It's big, funky, tight, and transcendent. A legendary album for a legendary talent.

Never really my style, and I don’t know why. But this was a great experience, regardless. And unlike any album I’ve ever heard.

I Would Die 4 U is nice and the title track is an epic. Underwhelmed by the rest but better on second listen - great synths on Computer Blue. Still didn't connect with Darling Nikki.

Its the sound of the 80s, and the epicness of it songs has meant its legacy is preserved. Its aged well.

5/5. A classic album that has some mid songs thrown in there. No doubting the significance and importance of purple rain, when doves cry, and let’s go crazy. Personal favorite is daring Nikki. There are some skippable songs though which keeps it from perfect but will bump it up to 5 cause prince is great.

Interesting listen, always heard of prince but never actually listened and I find this album to be pretty good. I think a lot of the songs kinda go on a little long and get a bit uninteresting but its okay. It’s Purple Rain. It’s. Purple. Rain. You don’t review Purple Rain, you lay back and enjoy the ride.

I'll just go ahead and get this out of the way now. If it's not the best album on the list, it's my favorite album. Were I to rank all of these albums, Purple Rain would be my absolute number 1. To say there are no skips is an injustice to the album. Each song feels like it was a hit, or at least released as a single. Imagine owning this on vinyl, flipping to side 2 and getting When Doves Cry, I Would Die 4 U, Baby I'm A Star and Purple Rain thrown at you. Again, that's just side TWO! This album was released when I was all of 14 years old, growing up in small town Nebraska. My whole life was in front of me, and repeated listens at that age continue to impact me. A musical genius from Minnesota opened up the world for me in ways no one had previously. I don't listen to it just to relive my life as a weird 14 and 15 year old kid. I still listen to it because it still slaps, and slaps hard. And to realize it's still the best album, front to back, that I've ever had the privilege of hearing.

I like the songs Prince has written for other artists and don't disagree that he is a virtuoso, but his own work is just not my jam.

As much as I wanted to hate this after Sign 'O' The Times, this was nice. Don't get the wrong idea! It's not like I l-like it or anything... Starts with a good song, plummets with off-putting screaming in The Beautiful Ones, then slowly gets better towards the end. Purple Rain stands out, so maaaybe it's not the worst album in the world. I-I mean... it's the worst! Get you pity 3 stars

Though I really enjoyed the themes explored on the album, I found the writing to be somewhat lackluster, and the music to be pretty significantly dated. Overall I was surprised considering I hear SO much praise for this album.

BL: Prince’s purple rain is one of my mothers favourite albums of all time. I personally have no fondness attached to it besides the track “when doves cry” as it was a song I used to listen all the time when I was about 9 or 10. I’ll see how it holds up as a unit AL: it was pretty solid. There are some real bangers in the second half but the first half is quite weak I think. FT: “darling Nikki”, “when doves cry”, “I would die 4 u” 3/5

Stylistically impressive album with a few of the greatest hits included, but I felt underwhelmed considering all the praise constantly thrown at this album. The overabundance of electronic sounds grated on me after a while and took away from the impressive full band. Prince is clearly talented, but the 80s was so palpable here I lost my appetite a bit. I'd say other than the hits, Darling Nikki surprised me and was a very good song albeit extremely lewd. Maybe on future listens this album would jump up a star.

Prince. I find about 20-25% of his music absolutely amazing and pretty much everything else ranging from mediocre to down right awful. This album really doesn't have anything awful, but a few songs are just ok. It's also one of the few albums I will listen to in it's entirely. It's a 3.5 but I'll round up for my love of When Doves Cry and Darling Nikki.

I am not a Prince fan and I do not apology for it. He can rip on guitar, and has obviously written a few really good hits. Just nothing as special as some critics and the public seems to bestowed on him.

This is such a great album on its own, but also one of the great movie soundtracks of all time. The movie itself wasn't particularly great, but the album became the soundtrack of 1984, it was so huge at the time. The songs are musically creative and wide ranging, but tightly arranged and beautifully cohesive as a whole. Ultimately the album is just so much fun to listen to. It's funky and soulful, frequently hard rocking, sometimes straight up weird, and never boring. Three of Prince's best songs reside on this album, and it's tempting to give it an outright 5, but there are a few throwaway tracks that keep this album at a solid 4. This is a big classical album by Prince and certainly one of his top 5 if not top 3 albums. Much has been said about it. I find some of the outros of some of the songs a bit irritating. Hence I give it 4 out of 5.

It's good. The title track is amazing and has one of my all time favorite guitar solos. There's some other classics to be found here as well. I do think that some of the deeper cuts are a little lacking. Overall I'd say that this is a really good album, albeit a bit overrated

Can I just say I’m an asshole for not liking Prince all these years?? I literally thought it was just crappy glam pop and that every song would sing like that Corvette song or Purple Rain, and I was so wrong!! I didn’t realize just how rock he really is, and the fact he started out playing alllll the music and producing himself as a teenager?! Mind blowing!! This album has a lot of synth in it, which gives the full 80s vibe, but it’s such good background music at home. Listen again: yes Purchase for my collection: maybe Favourite Song: Computer Blue

It's good and stuff. I don't know that it will cure your gout or walk your dog or pay off your student loans like its reputation would suggest. I was pleasantly surprised by Take Me With U and Computer Blue. Darling Nikki is one of those songs where, if it had generic lyrical content, nobody would ever think about it twice. Completely uninteresting. I forgot how long When Doves Cry is. And the title track is really, really boring. Still plenty of good here. I like some of the rhythms and he's a great guitar player. I just can't get down with it being one of the best things ever made.

Had to give it a second listen, but I just gotta give it a 5. Almost every song is really good, with pretty much 3 all-time classics.

"Purple Rain" is the sixth studio album by singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist Prince. It was a soundtrack to a movie he starred in with the same name. The album was a move away from funk to more rock and pop and was denser with multi-layer of guitars, electronic synth effects and drum machines. It was his commercial peak selling over 25 million copies and staying at #1 on the US charts for 24 consecutive weeks. The album is widely considered one of the best albums of all time, was put in the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2010 and the Library of Congress' National Recording Registry for its artistic significance in 2012. The organ, Prince introducing the afterword and the band kicking in start "Let's Go Crazy," two of the five album singles to reach #1. The synth melody. The shreading guitar ending...not the last shreading on this album. "Take Me With You" was written for Apollonia, the girl to get in the movie. It's a duet with Apollonia. Very catchy synth melody. Strings in the background. A great groove. The first side ends with "Darling Nikki," a song contributing to the start of "Parental Advisory" stickers. Come on...nothing wrong with singing about female maturation. It's slower and directed at Apollonia who decides to go with his movie enemy Morris Day. Grinding. The second half of this song is almost prog with the synths and guitar. The rock guitar intro with the beat begins his big one in "When Doves Cry." Outstanding intro. Then a keyboard melody with buzzing and a stark beat. No bass. Prince's seductive vocals. Prince's complex and emotional vocals highlight "I Would Die 4 U." The synth melody with electronic beat. And the album ends with the epic ballad "Purple Rain." The guitar open, drums, strings. It progresses slowly. Soulful backing vocals come in. The vocals are emotional. A lovely guitar solo in the middle and from then on the guitar takes away the melody. The song title is based on the America song "Ventura Highway." Purple being the color of blood in the sky. It's about the end of the world and being with the one you love and letting your faith guide you through. One of the 80's best. The album has hit song after hit song. The gorgeous melody with a mix of synths and guitar in the lead. It's rock, pop, dance and ballads. Legendary guitar solos. Emotional and compelling vocals. Yes, this still sounds great.

Highlights: When Doves Cry, I Would Die 4 You, Let's Go Crazy Leave Em's: Darling Nikki, Computer Blue Overall Thoughts: I have tried this album in the past from front to back and couldn't get very engaged with it, however this time around listening with a critical ear I finally get it. First off, it is always exciting to recognize an artist and album that pops up, and even more exciting when said album is lauded as a top 50 album of all time. A lot of the music throughout feels like it embodies 80's pop and rock music and as a young person I can see the inspiration that this kind of music provides to artists like The Weeknd. Darling Nikki was the only song I could really do without but I still feel like there was a place for it on the album. The fact that he played the guitar on his own stuff is truly impressive and adds to the impression Purple Rain provides. The smash hits are so good and in my opinion they somewhat carry the rest of the album in listenability. I'm now planning to go watch the movie; which along with making good music was probably the point of the album right? I guess that would make this album a success... I like it, but sometimes it's too chaotic

Prince is obviously one of the best guitarist ever and its shown in this album and he expresses himself and his playing so well that everyone should like this album no matter what your into. The album just has that feel of satisfaction because of the amazing sing writing and lyrics. This album is a absolute classic among rock and pop and everyone should give it a listen.

Awesome mainly upbeat fun album. Great guitar obviously and loved the drums. Some vintage 80s sound. So great ending the album with purple rain. Rating: 4.4

I wasn't really looking forward to this one and sure enough it was just as bad as I remembered. I had to endure this album being played over and over by friends when it first came out and it hasn't aged well. I was glad to get to the end of it. There are a few tracks that are okay, plus a lot of filler, shrieking, bad guitar. Not my kind of music. Very 1980s; best left in the 1980s. I do actually like a few songs by Prince. I like his earlier stuff, also some of his later albums. I still remember the outrage when he appeared at some music awards ceremony and wasn't humble enough for the UK press. That has to be worth a star or two I suppose.

Well I listened to it. I liked it. Nothing terribly special. I had some notes in here earlier that got wiped away. I'll try to remember what I wrote. I think it was something along the lines of. I couldn't name a single Prince song, and that I know he was a big deal, and that this album was a big deal. I saw a video of him jammin out to guitar one time, and was really surprised how awesome it was. He can really jam! the first track had an awesome finale. The rest of the album I listened to at the gym so I wasn't totally tuned in. Purple rain was def catchy. And supposedly John was listening to that song this morning. What a quinky dink.

A great mix of pop and rock on an album full of hits. Love the mixture of futuristic synths mixed with amazing guitar riffs and solos. The record has a lot of great experimental aspects too.

I went into this album thinking that i wouldn't like it but wow... I was surprised to say the least. It really is one of the greatest pop albums of the 80s. With every track I can hear the influence it made on even today's music. Can't give anything less than a 5.

Some epic music. Overproduction and a over sung in places. Masterful guitar. It exploded things in the 80s. P

2 many hits 4 me to not give this a 5. The guy rips on guitar and composed some extremely solid tracks that have birthed so many spin-offs and likely shaped pop into what it is today. It blends rock, soul, and pop together seamlessly, and when you add a finisher like that, you have s truly remarkable album.

С Принсом у меня сработал эффект Манделы. Долгое время (до прослушивания этого альбома вот сейчас) я был уверен, что Принс - это второй Майкл Джексон. Ну вот эти вот, заводные поп-песни с запоминающимся ритмом и экспрессивными танцами на сцене. Ну ладно, на самом деле, от истины я недалеко глобально. Но не в этом альбоме. Во-первых я не знал, что существует одноименный музыкальный фильм, саундтреком к которому пластинка и является. Эдакая фэнтезийная автобиография самого автора. Во-вторых, альбом пытается быть лирическим. Не под каждую песню здесь можно "оторваться на танцполе", иногда хочется сесть в кресло с бокалом чего-нибудь хорошего и задуматься о вечном. Конечно же, лучше всего это применяется к одноимённому синглу, который наверняка многие слышали. В общем, не так всё просто с этим Принсом. Кстати, с Джексоном, нетрудно догадаться, у них было соперничество за покорение музыкального Олимпа. Нашёл хорошую цитату по этому поводу в интернете, из допроса Пола Гонгавэра, заместителя директора AEG Live: "Прокурор: Сколько концертов планировалось дать? Гонгавэр: Мы заключили контракт на 31 концерт. Прокурор: Почему было выбрано такое число, вам известно? Гонгавэр: (улыбаясь) Да. Принц дал 21 концерт на арене O2, и Майкл хотел дать на 10 больше". Альбому ставится крепкая (!) 4+ за просевшую середину. Как-то она мимо меня пролетела, постфактум тексты прочитал - ухмыльнулся.

Fun and dynamic and even gets to edgy at times. "When Doves Cry" and "Purple Rain" are master classes in how you to make pop music sound serious – near Platonic ideals of such elevations and the title cut is how the end of a "serious" pop album should sound; one wishes one'd heard more of Prince operating in this elegaic, classically-inflected mode during his career. There's some dreck here, to be clear, "Computer Blue" is the dreckiest cut, though the guitar playing is decent. Much the same could be said of "Darling Nikki." One has always found "Let's Go Crazy" to be overrated, and a spot annoying besides, but one gets why less distinguished palettes might like it. "Baby I'm a Star" sounds very much like minor variations on nearby cuts, an outtake with different lyrics. "The Beautiful Ones" is seriously underrated – Prince's ability to do sexual yearning so convincingly might have been his superpower (or one fo them). And "Take Me with U" and "I Would Die 4 You" show Prince's versatility and are awfully good to be the 5th and 4th best songs on the record. One feels not all compromised in his assessment by the fact that a highly memorable high school date was had on the opening night of the movie; one sees and hears the record clearly for what it is, lo these many years hence.

I don't think this album is a 10, but 4 stars seemed too low. This album was solid, even great until the last track. If not for the title track, it would definitely be a 4. Purple Rain. What a song. 8 minutes of pure catharsis and beauty. Possibly my favorite album closer OAT. Without it this album would be good, but nothing special, but the title track just brings it that extra mile.

although i can see the grandness that is attached to this album, personally there are many times where it comes off as repetitive and uninspiring. there are some great moments in here but to me this is a perfect example of the pros being unable to balance the cons best song: purple rain worst song: baby i’m a star overrated song: darling nikki underrated song: computer blue

This is an amazing album and by no means do I have the knowledge to understand all the great musical qualities this album possesses. I know that prince is a legend and that he makes anything cool. This is my favorite album of his as it has great rocking guitar riffs and flows perfectly with synths and pop sounds that nobody else could combine besides maybe Michael Jackson. Prince did it all though and that’s why he’s a legend. This album is one of the best ever and I enjoy listening to it from time to time. 8.9/10

Purple Rain is the perfect representation of eighties culture: ambitious, over-the top, and filled to the brim with just about everything imaginable. The drum beats are thundering, the guitar solos are screeching and long, and there's enough moaning and falsetto to make Barry Gibb jealous. "Let's Go Crazy" kicks off with a spoken word intro that any other artist would have sounded silly reciting, but Prince's serious commitment to the fun pays off. The remainder of the album is filled with other raw emotions as well: the lusty "When Doves Cry" pushes the envelope with its sexual imagery, while "Darling Nikki" pushes it with raw lyrics of nymphomania. The album has great instrumentation too: "I Would Die 4 U" has some of my favorite use of synthesizer in all of music, and the keyboards on "Computer Blue" and "Baby I'm a Star" are perfection as well. And to top it all off, the album ends with its nearly nine minute long, self-titled masterpiece. Every time I hear "Purple Rain," I always picture Prince stroking his guitar like a phallus during the halftime show at Super Bowl XLI, ending what is arguably the best halftime show since Michael Jackson rocked the Rose Bowl. In the end, everything on this album is massive, but anything less than that would have been a misfire. This is easily one of the best albums of the eighties, if not all time.

I’ve never enjoyed this album as much as I feel like I should. The Beautiful Ones, Darling Nikki, When Doves Cry, and especially the title track are all fantastic but the rest doesn’t really do a lot for me. However it is such a monumental record from one of the most iconic artists of the 80s, with such an important legacy in the history of popular music that I feel like to give it any less than a 4 would be an injustice

I did not enjoy the other songs. Purple rain really stands out and the other songs are just not that good and that someone that loves guitar. Also, whats up with the screaming bits? Seems out of place.

Great album, love all the cool synth stuff and the song writing is top notch.

Oh this bangs. Hello he likes to yell like a headless chicken. camp i get why when doves cry made the 1984 girlies crazy the use of reversed audio lyrics is interesting this slapped. i appreciate the 4 minutes of instrumental to finish the album off. really feels like a fully realized experience.

I'm going to try my hardest going into this album with a blank and unbiased opinion until I hear the music. I do not think that I am the target audience of Prince's music to be honest. I have heard the songs "Purple Rain" and a cover of "Darling Nikki" before, but not the original. Having listened to "Purple Rain" again, I think it's an ok song. I can understand why people would enjoy his music, and I think he was a super talented musician, his work is just not for me. I am willing to give other albums of his a chance, but I am not optimistic that I will enjoy them.

I loved the opening, ending and all throughout. It is so obvious how much talent Prince has, both vocally and instrumentally. I love the 80s sound in each song. If I had one critique, which I do, occasionally some of the screamy parts were a little confusing. It is no doubt that this album is one of the most influential and talented. 4/5, 9/10.

Man this album was huge - it was also a bit of an eye-opener in terms of seeing/hearing Prince's elite musicianship. But then - and still now - it kind of pains me how sleek the production/mix often is. I lived it :D - it was *definitely* a product of the times with the glossy synths etc but not far underneath is a collection of perfect pop-rock hits that I always end up wanting to hear more of. It's kind of a mandatory album to "understand" the 80s - I still wouldn't say I love it (rock/raw remix someday??) but there are no truly weak tracks, just a few average ones among the classics and those alone make it more than worthwhile - highlighted by the all-time track "Purple Rain" to close the record. I always seem to find or focus on the negative more than the positive which isn't fair by a long shot - in the end I'd probably listen to this any time, and not least-important: the lead and end tracks on this album are *perfectly* arranged/placed on the album. 7/10 4 stars

There are records that you just have to listen to in awe of the talent and artistry that was necessary to create it. In this case, the disbelief was accompanied by a lot of dancing in my seat and occasionally saying out loud "What the fuck, this is really good." So many Prince classics in one package, and even the deeper cuts are all deliciously funky. This album is magic. Standout tracks are When Doves Cry and Darling Nikki.

Purple Rain is everything you want an album to be. No notes.

Good bit I do think I missed the hype on this one. Everything that was unique when he did it I've heard from other artists who (I assume) got inspired by him.

Prince's songwriting skills, virtuoso abilities, and enigmatic aura possibly make him the single coolest & most enigmatic musicians to ever live. It's a bit strange that his best (& almost a 9-track greatest hits) album inspired and then became the soundtrack for a the eponymous film, but I think part of what made this his most well-known record, is how well it exemplifies his signature sound and ability to write songs that cover a variety of topics & emotional range. He nails relationship tumult in 'When Doves Cry', has fun in the frenetic partying anthem 'Let's Go Crazy' (my fav of his), and recounts freaky-deaky sex-capades in 'Darling Nikki'...before wrapping it up perfectly with the power-ballad Purple Rain (...originally written as a country music duet w/ Stevie Nicks, who allegedly was too intimidated to help him finish composing and record...his mega-star talent apparently too much for her). Despite his & this record's tremendous success, other artists didn't/couldn't even try to replicate his one-of-a-kind sound (vocal & instrumental) or style, both of which are on full display here. Similar to maybe a handful of other music phenoms (ex: Eddie Van Halen on guitar or Ringo Starr on drums...but with songwriting abilities few musicians could equal), his originality/talent were truly unique & continue to echo around the world. Oh Prince. Grateful to have seen this legend live. I just gave "sign of the times" a rounded up 5 but this is a stronger album. full glory and exultant blissful prince. even more unhinged and over the top as a performer LIVE, his flourishes were even less restrained on stage. true musical, lyrical artistic and original inventive genius. he wasn't copying anyone.

I liked it, but didn't love it. Some songs more than others.

Going into this I'd only heard the big hits so I was excited to listen to the rest of it. Honestly, though, I was very slightly let down because none of them really stuck with me the same way that let's go crazy sticks with me. It was by no means bad but I think I was just let down by extremely high expectations. The hits still hit really hard though.

Some decent cheesy disco bops on here, but overall I'm lukewarm on Prince. Some of the lyrics are a little cringey too.

In 2023 it's almost hard to believe that something as interesting, experimental, catchy and rockin' as this used to be charting pop music. It wouldn't get a look in today, sadly. But it's an absolutely fantastic album. It's fun as hell, great to listen to and it just oozes cool. 5/5.

I love every minute of this album, ever since I first heard it 35 years ago or however long ago it was. I cannot say one bad thing about early Prince, his later stuff? I have some feelings about but Purple Rain is perfection from beginning to end.

Pop masterpiece. Love that it never floats into any of the tacky aspects of the 80s. His shredding gives it such a perfect edge (not mention some of the raunchy subject matter).

Second time listening to this, through earphones this time, some good songs but the song purple rain is overrated.

I know I'm supposed to like Prince but I've never really understood the appeal. I guess you had to be there. The singles are ubiquitous by now if you've ever been in a public place or like, watched a film that was made in the last 40 years.

There's a couple of good songs and a bunch of weird ones. It sounds like a Prince album. It's a bummer that the best song on the record is the shortest one.

I really don't get Prince, and nearly half these songs were just a bit too chaotic for me. Lots of screeching and screaming and random sound effects. But Doves Cry and Purple Rain are all time bops, so I think it evens out.

I want to say something pithy about my love for this album but I keep returning to my pre-teen cousin and me sharing a Walkman headset during summer vacation and giggling at Darling Nikki over and over. And that’s what got Tipper Gore’s stickers all over everything! For that, and for the staccato bass-less groove of When Doves Cry, and the Arsenio Hall performance of Let’s Go Crazy that I saw once and been Jonesing for ever since and Wendy and Lisa and Apollonia and Dr Fink, I have one thing to say: Thank U

Spellbinding. Could be a greatest hits album. In many ways, Purple Rain is the perfect encapsulation of Prince’s vision and artistry - maximalist production, big sound, funk and pop and rock influences, incredible vocal and guitar solos and presented in eye catching imagery. An extraordinary accomplishment.

Legendary, enough said

Never listened to this all the way through before. I guess I get the hype? Not fully though? It's real good though, I fully enjoyed it. To me, it's a very solid 4. Some great singles, and nothing bad. But not exactly mind-blowing or anything.

I didn't need to listen again to know this is 5 stars, though I did. Three times. Prince is a genius but his albums are a mixed bag as his prolific creativity was not always put into a filter. This, however, is a definite moment when it all worked. Not a single weak song on an imperious album. When Doves Cry without a bass is still spine tingly good. The title track, recorded live, is an epic ending by a band of supremely talented musicians. A perfect album.
