Gotta be honest. The Lyre of Orpheus > Abattoir Blues
Enjoyed it more than the last Nick Cave album that was suggested but at almost an hour and a half it seemed a little long at times
An almost perfect album and I’m not that much of a huge fan of NC&TBS. Would give 4.5 if I could.
I'm listening to it and I like it, especially the guitar riffs and the bass. It often gives me the vibes of some Pink Floyd work. I'm giving 4 stars only because it doesn't meet the mood I'm looking for right now but I really appreciate the whole album.
Too long for me to fully grapple with, but lots of really good songs, interesting and distinctive sound. I'd like to listen to more!
Very nice, well produced album full of energy, Easy money and Supernaturally are becoming favourites
Disc 1 is a 5 star album. Disc 2 is a 3 star album. 4 stars feels exactly right here. The biggest thing this album did was make me hate Ghosteen even more. These guys are clearly very talented arrangers, and this shows how they can make interesting music too. Favorite track: There She Goes, My Beautiful World
Strange, different, cool. That's how I'd sum up this album - and Nick Cave and his band in general. Not as much theatre as Murder Ballads, but still some sordid tales in there. What I like more is how they go for it on the rock side of things. Not all songs, but there's some great musicianship going on at times. Get Ready for Love is like modern blues rock - great start to side one. Hiding All Away similar but different at the same time - cool, pounding sound with some organ zeal? Messiah Ward was more sweeping (almost Peter Gabriel-like) but very cool. There She Goes, My Beautiful World is one of my favorites on the album - great tempo, great humming guitar and bass with some rocking piano to add a little blues edge. The rest of side one was solid too and then we hit the strange with the last song Fable of the Brown Ape and the first song on side two The Lyre of Orpheus. Just weird lyrics and story-telling (theatric Drake). But interesting beats to go with it, and you know I kind of dug them both. Side two is definitely stranger or more eclectic overall, less rock and more ballad. Maybe not quite as good as side one but still solid and some real winners were Babe You Turn Me On (yowza lyrics but a nice soft beat and I love his atom bomb sound effect right at the end), Easy Money (great rhythm and vocals), Supernaturally (still some rock on side two), and O Children (almost gospel). That last one may be the best track on both sides - deep lyrics, sweeping sound with just the right amount of sharp piano to contrast, and great blend of Drake's vocals and his backing singers. I know right now I'm not going to love everything by Nick Drake, but this one was very good.
A double album where a lot is going on. Almost too much. With themes that go from the apocalyptic to the inspirational (in the religious sense), addresses to lovers, nature, fathers: this record has its highs and its lows. The two faces of the music and lyrics, the more classic ‘dark’ Cave and the hopeful almost uplifting streak, are reflected in the tendencies towards their classic style on one hand and a more mainstream attitude in the other. A weak 4/5. FaV tracks: Abattoir Blues, O children
No issues with Mr Nick Cave. Distinctive voice and lyrics for sure, but a talented man.
A cool and interesting double album of blues rock and gospel ballads. I wish I was at home to sit down and just listen to this with no distractions, as it lost me a few times, but I think I'd really love this if I just got to sit and appreciate it. Favourite: Supernaturally
I very much liked the first half, the second half was fine, overall a pleasant experience
nick cave <3
My formal introduction to Nick Cave’s music came in my second year of university. We had a young lecturer, Professor Green (not that one): always clad in black from head to toe with a wiry, fiery look in his eyes. Determined to hijack the idea of a “canon” in English literature, he led a popular culture module full of his favourite graphic novels, film, music. Week four was Nick Cave’s “Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus”. I have a vivid memory of a seminar when we were all made to sit through “Hiding All Away”, copies of the lyrics in front of us for annotation. It played to a room of mostly nonplussed, fidgeting twenty year olds (including one who moaned that the track was “completely dull”), but this reviewer was quietly gripped. I went on to write an essay on “Messiah Ward”, earnestly describing it as Nick Cave navigating a war-torn, paranoid post 9/11 world. It was verbose, dense and pretentious, trying to shoehorn the university’s criteria into the work of a man who defies categorisation. That this album is just as ripe for academic study as it is for casual enjoyment is testament to Nick Cave’s power as a lyricist: intellectual, wry and cynical, I fully believe he deserves his place as his own generation’s Dylan or Cohen. Seven years on, I’m still thrilled by “Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus”, and I don’t even have to write two-thousand words to prove it. What’s more, the music’s great too: his thirteenth album with the Bad Seeds, this one completes Cave’s transition into elder-statesman of rock, a self-described “conservative-with-a-small-c”. Gone are the shock-value murder ballads, the howling haunted heroin addict, the mournful break-up hymns… instead, we have a slab of bluesy, brooding rock and roll in “Abattoir Blues” and another slab of lilting, gospel folk in “The Lyre of Orpheus”. The best tracks? “There She Goes, My Beautiful World” is propulsive and passionate with a killer chorus: one of the best odes to writer’s block on record. “Nature Boy” is a “Come Up And See Me…” homage which delights and enthralls. In the second half, “Breathless” is a pastoral beauty with a fresher face and more optimism than anything else Cave had done previously, while the one-two punch of “Carry Me” and “O Children” to close the whole set is a masterstroke: one of them beautiful, swaying gospel, the other a haunted ode to the end of the world. The rest of the Bad Seeds are on fine form, demonstrating their aptitude in a whole host of styles and moods. The gospel backing singers are also a delight whenever they feature, really elevating all of the above highlights as well as “Hiding All Away”, “Get Ready for Love” and many more. There are just a handful of roadblocks holding the album back from five stars: “Fable of the Brown Ape” is a stumbling wedge of nothing, and “Supernaturally” and “Spell” are slightly faltering dips in the road during the home stretch. Still, overall this is one of Cave’s very best. With a bit of trimming, it would be an easy five stars, but his best albums in my book can be found later in his career. It will always evoke fond memories for me, and I’ll always be grateful to Professor Green for wielding “Abattoir Blues” as the ultimate gateway drug.
Not sure how I missed this album, know a couple of the songs, the toning down of the birthday party
Good lyrics, awesome vibe.
Have they had Nick Cave voice a Disney villain yet? His voice was made for a role like that. I still haven't heard a bad album from this guy. He has to be one of the most consistent people in music, even taking his other projects like The Birthday Party into consideration. A very consistent double album that was never dull. Glad the album cover was a jape, because it's really unfitting and boring. It's also weird how I unabashedly hate crooning, but when you mix it with dark and gothic vibes, it's suddenly great.
Excellent album. Went a bit off piste in the middle but picked up again Fave song hiding all away
4.5
This is a really interesting album. Never listened to this band before. I don't really know the best way to describe it. I really like the gospel style organ and synth going on in the background. Every track has a ton of little moments lower in the mix if you pay attention. I like the storytelling style of lyrics and the production is insanely good. There's a lot going on here for a first listen I think. I enjoyed it a lot though. Score: 80 Art: 70
This is a long album, but it was all new to me and I didn't know what to expect. His voice goes well with the gospel sound and orchestra. It has rich story telling but with a mix of, I'm sure, absolute nonsense. Favorite song was Hiding All Away. I can do without Babe, You Turn Me On.
4.5/5. I’m just so happy that I get to experience such a talented musician like Nick Cave in this lifetime.
I go into today’s album with a bit of hesitancy. My only previous exposure to Nick Cave is through his band The Birthday Party, whom I thought sounded like concentrated awful. However, I’ve made the commitment to give everything a fair chance, so I’m desperately hoping this sounds very different. Songs I already knew: none Favourites: The Lyre Of Orpheus, Messiah Ward Ok so there is good news: this sounds markedly different to The Birthday Party. I let out a breath of relief once track one started, as I could tell that the two bands are very different. I found this to be nice to listen to. The singing is very unique but works well with the music, and the actual music itself is catchy yet complex. I expected to hate this album, but I found myself enjoying it quite a lot. I haven’t even mentioned that it’s a double album as well, and my stamina for albums isn’t that great. Despite this, I was able to make it through the whole thing in one go, and enjoyed pretty much everything along the way.
I must avow that my view of what a Nick Cave album is has been warped by the tragic circumstances that have infiltrated his life. I'm more familiar with the work he released after the premature death of his young son, work which was naturally very solemn and reflective. The lyricism here is still as poetic, but with a larger dynamic range. He's always had a darkness to his voice, but it's nice to hear him get a little lighter, too. This is a solid 3.5.
I liked this much more than the other Nick Cave album I reviewed. This was great! Fav tracks: O Children, Get Ready for Love, Cannibal’s Hymn
A lot of these songs are great! Great voice, background singers, good composition of songs. I would say a lot of this is "sing talking", but it's really enjoyable. Feels like this album belongs to a movie or musical. Not sure how I've never heard of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds before, but I feel like he could go toe to toe with Tom Petty and other similar artists. This album is almost a 5 for me.
Such a truly strange album but I dig it. I did not know what to expect at all going into this album except for Kevin saying "I know some nick cave but don't know anything on this album. Hes...interesting" Very unique sound I would have no idea what genre to put this in Would definitely do drugs and listen to this album again
Wow, this is a lot. A double-album by a very prolific artist that has always been in my periphery but I've never really sat down and listened to. After the first few listens, I can confirm that this is a lot to take in. I don't really feel qualified to speak on it with any authority just yet but I will say it is very good and I will keep listening. I am rating it a 4/5 here conservatively but this could very well end up being a 5/5.
Heavier than I thought it wold be, but I liked it...
CD
Favourite song Easy Money
Nick Cave snapped on this one. Haven't ever liked him before listening to this album yesterday. Good stuff
I'm perfectly happy listening to Nick Cave growl sincerely into a microphone. Him and the band.
Some good music in there. Not everything stuck, but overall a good listen. I didnt take in a lot of lyrics which might change my view on subsequent listens.
I absolutely love that you can think you know what you're expecting when you go into a Nick Cave album, yet get totally thrown off guard every time. This album's first part was pretty good, but The Lyre of Orpheus was only excellent from start to finish. It is a double album, however, so I must rate them as one, and that leads to a four. Seriously, though, that second half is glorious.
Some real bangers in here. Surprised if never heard of this one before.
The last Nick Cave album I bought was in the 90's, so this album was new to me. There is no one quite like Nick Cave. He puts so much emotion into his vocals. I believe with continued listening this album would be a five, but for now it is a four.

I think this is my third or fourth Nick Cave album that's cropped up on the 1001 albums generator. I wouldn't have expected to like his music much but there's something quite beguiling about his darkness, with a twist of humour thrown in. This album is slightly more upbeat than previous offerings, possibly even some pop elements, but it is decidedly not mainstream! On the whole, I enjoyed it
Yesterday I drew ABC's The Lexicon Of Love which was a slog at 42 minutes. Nick Cave's Abattoir Blues / The Lyre of Orpheus double album clocking in at 1 hour and 22 minutes was a much easier listen. I've never really listened to Nick Cave but the production, writing and performing on this album is top notch and was an enjoyable listen 4/5.
Would be 5/5, but Nick’s voice isn’t my cup of tea
I've had 3 nick cave albums previously, and disliked them all. But I actually thought this album was pretty great. Powerful music. The sonic quality of the album was very good
At the time Nick Cave's music started to feel a bit exhaustive. Was not impressed too much by Nocturama, and then this follow-up double-album felt like overkill.. ..only to discover many years afterwards that it is actually full of pretty strong songs. Still, I would say it is not "classic" Nick Cave, and that it should not be included on the list (plenty of other NC albums that are better qualified - I also wonder whether we get any Flying Nun albums, or whether the Australasian part of the list is merely limited to Nick Cave and Crowded House).
Tiene cosas interesantes, sonido clásico indie,
Deep lyrics, good music, great voice, interesting vibe.
this is absolutely fantastic! Nick caves songwriting is on show here through both albums in the double; instrumentation is great as well. best tracks from abattoir: nature boy, hiding all away, there she goes my beautiful world. Best tracks from Orpheus: the lyre of Orpheus, o children, breathless
A nice double album with diverse tracks.
Long album, well curated with good slow rock songs (feels a bit like 2 albums with faster and slower songs)
I always like Nick Cave.
The Great Songwriter returns. This is such a statement. It takes BALLS to release what is basically two albums in one package. Bruce tried it with Lucky Town and Human Touch. It usually leads to the conclusion that one album would have been best. But not so with St Nick. The rawness of Abattoir Blues is intense; the comedown on The Lyre of Orpheus reminds you that you always need a ying to your yang. You end up feeling a sense of balance having explored many highs and lows. Cave is bloody great at taking you on these trips.
Nick Cave is cool! Mostly I really like his music, but sometimes I vacillate and think he’s a completely pompous ass full of pretentious twaddle. Those episodes are few and far between. I also think he’s definitely mellowed as he’s matured and I like a lot of his later music even more. I also love his soundtrack music. If you ever get a chance to listen to his music for the play ‘Metamorphosis’, then you will probably be moved by its haunting beauty. There are other Nick Cave albums I love more than this but it’s pretty solid.
I thoroughly enjoyed this album and believe it has a lot of range, especially when comparing the first and second halves. Always surprised by his ability to mix folk and rock so seamlessly. 4/5
I knew little about Nick Cave before today. I remembered his name from the 1990's. I thought he was some sort of Iggy Pop derivative. I don't know if I actually heard any of his music before and I was surprised to learn that he is still an active artist. Knowing nothing, the 82 minute run time worried me. This could be a long painful trip. However, right front the start, Get Ready For Love gallops in and pulls me along for a wild ride. I really like most of the songs and the weakest are still pretty good. I'll be more curious about Nick Cave in the future. I most impressed by how this album sustains itself over such a long term. I didn't feel like skipping any tracks and I was consistently interested for the duration of the album. Abattoir Blues doesn't suffer from the usual flaws of double albums. It was just meant to be this way. The album works beautifully as a whole. I'm not sure where it fits into my personal listening habits, but I can respect this as a master work.
Trying to be the Doors? Great voice!
really enjoyable album, just think it went on a little bit too long
The title, the double album. This is surely one of his gnarliest and most forbidding for the casual listener. Nothing could be further from the truth. This is one of Cave's most accessible albums period and several tracks, notably Beautiful World, Easy Money and O My Children have what can only be described as sing-along choruses. So come on in, the Bad Seeds play beautifully and you'll be ready for Your Funeral My Trial in no time.
O was only marginally familiar with Nick Cave before this. I expected sparse musical soundscapes in the background, with menacing dark poetry recited over the top. I got something much different than that. Much livelier, rocking and driving at times music and a thousand times more melodic. I really enjoyed this and there are some clear standout tunes that I just love. There’s a bit too much here to absorb at once, and would enjoy it more if some songs were cut out, or maybe if I just had more time to sit with it. I would really like to come back to this.
Sehr geiler Rock mit teilen Kneipenfeeling. Richtig nice!
Another first. Found it superb. I may be a convert
I really liked most of this. The double album made it a bit long.
Be still my beating heart. This record inspired me to become a footballer. Its every beat gives me a stonking erection so hard that it could kill an army. My mother always told me I wouldn't make it, but she was wrong the awful hag.
Good seeds
Best Song: There She Goes, My Beautiful World. Cacophonous in a good way, with perfect use of a backing choir. Upbeat in a way that feels like it might fall off the rails at any moment. Worst Song: The Lyre of Orpheus. Lyrics were fine, but the "oh mama" chorus was not good enough to be repeated as frequently as it was. Overall: Lyrically dense, musically diverse. My first serious foray into Nick Cave's music and I really enjoyed it. I will definitely be returning to this album. Very nearly 5 stars for me, but the double album runs a bit long with a few too many weak points (surprisingly, both title tracks) that I feel it would have improved with more stringent editing.
Whoa. Not quite a 5 for me, but wish I could give it a 4.5.
A lot to digest, espexially on a first listen. The common element of this wide array of songs is it’s glossy, bombastic sound reimagining the Bad Seeds for the 21st century. Might rub some people the wrong way, but I’d say that the music retains it’s strength
Truth be told, I'm still listening to this one, but I was in on the 4-star review early on. How do I not already have this guy in my regular rotation of music? I've been familiar with Nick Cave from just about the very beginning — I remember knowing who he was when I first saw "Wings Of Desire" (one of my all-time favorite movies and one I saw in the theaters when it was released ... Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds are performing in a club in one of the scenes). Anyway, point is, I've known about him since the '80s and never really explored his catalog. I've seen him described as "post-punk," which I guess makes sense, but he always seemed too cool for punk in my estimation. In the long line of tone poets — Dylan, Morrison, Smith, Waits, et. al. — this music and his songwriting have an immediacy and relatability (and the aforementioned "cool") that I totally dig. Definitely going to dive deeper into his extensive and continuing body of work.
I actually had more time to listen to music yesterday than I normally do, and I still didn't get all the way through this one. These damn double albums are killing me. It's a lot of new music to absorb. I did skim through the last four tracks, and I'm glad I did if only to realize that this is the album that has O Children. I really dug a lot of the material on here and it makes me want to check out more Nick Cave. (Previously only listened to Murder Ballads, which is also great.) Not sure I care for the sequencing, though, with the first disc being rockers and the second ballads. Someone else said this wasn't meant to be listened to back-to-back, but still it seems like you should either mix the songs up or release them separately. But what do I know? Guess that's why I have the shuffle feature.
T3B 1. Get Ready for Love 2. O Children 3. Cannibal’s Hymn Fantastic! Such a great listen. Solid 4.
I realized today that I had some negative feelings towards Nick Cave that were based on The Birthday Party's 1982 album, Junkyard. This was not that. I also remembered that I had listened to Murder Ballads, and that although dark, I had enjoyed the music. I was glad this one came on a day where I could listen to the whole thing in one go on a walk. It accompanied the solitary early autumn afternoon quite well and I was quite enchanted with it (...or them). Mind you, there are still dark, disturbing lyrics (cannibalism, etc) but some glorious rhymes (Orpheus/orifice) and this felt like real storytelling.
I think that there is something very interesting happening here, but I didn't have the patience to really focus on the lyrics today. The music and vocals were quite intriguing. I even listened twice and then sampled a third time. On the other hand, I don't think that this is something that I will ever return to.
This is really good! 4
I felt it
I love Nick Cave - especially live - no one should miss the chance to see him as he is intense. I don't listen to his records as much as I used to, and somehow hadn't come across this one before. Although not my favourite Nick Cave album, it's pretty good!
Lively record, no boring moments. I would give it another listen
Liked it! Grows on you.
the songs are a bit long but still great
One finally found a record one likes by this guy and it’s very good indeed (though 4 [5 if you count the fully execrable Birthday Party] is way too many for Cave). Haunting and lovely, with organic-seeming and genuine drama and tension, much less contrived than on earlier records. The backing vocals are the difference-makers in this regard. The only thing that makes it a double album, one supposes, is that the two sides were released at the same time. And the only thing that keeps it from being full marks (5) is the handful of overlong clunkers on the first set. Lyre is much the stronger “side,” with a few first-rate tracks – “Breathless,” “Easy Money,” and “Babe, You Turn Me On” and “Oh Children.” Only “There Goes My Beautiful World” and “Let the Bells Ring” from Abattoir reach that level. One did not know this record, is glad to do so now, and will definitely queue it up again in the future, though one’s preference for Tom Waits over NC has not been overturned (if only for the crimes against culture committed by The Birthday Party).
Two pretty great albums put into one double album, but with two names, and two track listings, and two relatively distinct sounds... so why not just make it two albums?????
See, this grizzly sound is something that I enjoy much more than the softer folk sounds I've heard from some of his other stuff. It does have enough bloat to warrant a 4 unfortunately, but it would be a low 9 out of 10.
Good album, but long. I still enjoyed it, as I generally enjoy Nick Cave. 3.75/5
Get Ready For Love is a banger and a half, love the chaotic guitar work. Same goes for Hiding All Away - that final climax is fantastic. Murder Ballads opened my eyes to Nick Cave finally, and now this album won me over even more. Becoming a Cave fan with this 1001 list, loving it.
I surprisingly haven't spun this one too much, despite being big on Nick. His double albums tend to be too much for me, which is probably why Ghosteen doesn't wow me as much. The funny thing is, I think the second disc is stronger and has more of his trademark sound. But it's all pretty solid. B
Nick Cave has always been a tough one for me. Murder Ballads is great, The Boatman's Call is great and just generally the songs are strong structurally and melodiously. But usually, at some point, he completely loses me and I get the feeling I need a masters in English lit to follow him wherever it is he's off to. And yet - this is pretty great. This is one that I think I'll dive into a little further.
Generally speaking, I would describe myself as more of a fan of melancholic/slow Cave ("No More Shall We Part" is a fave), but I had never listened to this double beast of an album and... hot damn, I love the first side. It's all good, but tunes like "There She Goes, My Beautiful World" and "Nature Boy" smoke! I remember less specific stand outs from Disc 2, but I'll be putting this whole endeavor on repeat the next couple of weeks. So, it turns out I'm also a fan of fast Cave. And the band Cave-In. Basically, if you're a musician who has anything to do with a cave I'm ready to go spelunking.
Tom Waits + Elvis Costello vibes, eclectic bluesy indie goodness, and a lovely operatic aesthetic all swirled together
I always confuse Nick Cave and Nick Drake in my head, so the first ten seconds of this really shocked me before I twigged :D It's dark, heavy, and not an easy listen by any means, but I really enjoyed it anyway. It's a double album, the first half (Abattoir Blues) much more rocky and full of energy than the second half. Don't really understand why they released them together tbh, it's a very different vibe and both are plenty long enough to be an album in their own right. I think the first album is a comfortable 4, the other is a middling to high 3, so it's a scraped 4 for the pair together.
3.5, fairly enjoyable though a bit too similar sounding songs and album is far longer than it needs to be. O Children is the best song on it
A double disc set with one rock disc and another quiet one never really worked for me. This works better than most, but I think it typically results in somewhat uneven material. The high points are as good as anything Nick and his crew have ever done. Warren Ellis taking more of a music director role is a positive for me. I have listened to a lot of Nick Cave over the years, but find I play the live album from this tour more than this one.
I want to go back and listen a couple more times. I like “There She Goes - My Beautiful World” a lot
Been a fan of Red Right Hand since I heard it on an X-Files album. This album was great.
Good, more like a 3.5 than a 4. Dragged on a bit.
Had no idea what to expect with this one, but was pleasantly surprised and really enjoyed it! Should have known, as Brooks hated it lol
enjoyed this a lot. definitely some higher energy on the first album, and it is strong all the way through (though brown ape was a bit off). highlights for me were messiah ward and let the bells ring. Second disc was also good (the lyre was a little challenging), but otherwise solid start to finish. Liked easy money and supernaturally. I thought the album had a lot of layers and the backing vocals/harmonies were very well done. nicely produced.
Prachtig album, prachtige stem.
Doet me aan Leonard Cohen denken.
This is really good… might even be a 5 if it was slightly shorter!
Let the bells ring é boa. The Lyre of Orpheus tem uma introdução interessante... possível vocal. Breathless. O Children muito boa também. Disco 2 é melhor e tem mais material
Anything by Nick Cave and his entourage will be magnificent. This one in particular I have not listened from his catalog and I'm glad to have given it a whirl. For a double record it does an amazing job keeping it interesting for the entire thing. I may need further listens since Nick Cave albums are always so dense but I can already tell I love this.
Wow, what a great album
This is seriously good and looking at his discography I've got a lot of listening to do. Beautiful arrangement, some amazing blues especially on the first album, I love his use of backing vocals. The second album seems a bit more laid back...Strong.
I was very excited to listen to Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds as they are relatively unknown to me. I enjoyed the music very much and will definitely be giving it multiple replays to figure out which songs I like the best.
An amazing ride
Really enjoyed this. Never particularly listed to Nick Cave before
Lovely stuff. Thanks Nick. I feel like I should have read the lyrics in preparation for listening because the odd line I picked up was highly literate, but snippets here and there didn't coalesce into anything sensible.
Great title. Great intro to Nick Will return to this again
Abattoir Blues has a raucous noisy start then good bluesy old fashioned rock n roll. Enjoyable. Lyre of Orpheus is more eclectic and perhaps richer for it. A second listen beckons. Overall a good impression.
Like millions of other Nick Cave fans (presumably), my first real taste of The Bad Seeds was hearing O Children on Harry Potter... That might well still be my favourite track on here, but it's got some stiff competition. It's hard to gauge whether there's a thematic concept in each disc or if they're just split on musical lines. Abattoir Blues is the better of the two, with both its loud chaotic bits and loud euphoric bits hitting the spot, but after a couple of listens I believe there's plenty to enjoy on both. The music is very rich but still accessible - much more so than the album title and cover may suggest. Honestly, even as a fan of the artist who was familiar with a few of these tracks I was surprised by how consistently I enjoyed the whole package. 4.5
I’ve never listened to Nick Cave before. This album is quite good and I think it makes me want to do a deep dive into his work.
Interesting album. Would be a great background album. Not something I'd listen to every day, but I liked it more than I didn't like it. I feel like I need half stars. This would be like a three and a half to me.
I've had a lot of long albums lately, and finally one that I really want to listen to. I checked this out from the library once and for some reason disc 1 was missing, so I'm actually quite familiar with disc 2 while I haven't really heard disc 1. In any case, I liked both, although after one listen I think I prefer the more nuanced, mellow style of disc 2. Regardless, Nick Cave is never boring. 4 stars.
4/5 25/04/22 I liked how half was headbanging Aussie rock music with a touch of humor, to then be followed with more love music type, the contrast was satisfying. I did not know the song from Deathly Hallows with Harry and Hermione is on the album.
For those playing along you may notice I loathe a double album, this one didn’t hurt like normal. First half was a little rocky blusier and the second half more mellow all along feeling like a good gothy time
Easy listening punk,
Killer gothic rock. This album is just wall to wall filled with jams and killer songwriting.
Sei la
It’s a grower. Gets better as it goes on as well, so I guess I prefer The Lyre of Orpheus more than Abattoir Blues Tunes are what you’d expect from Nick Cave. Enjoyed it.
Enjoyed this much more thoroughly than The Happy Birthday early days...From the first track was more into this.
Yeah a tad dad rocky but I quite enjoyed this
Didn't expect that coolness from Nick Cave
Very good
Very good album. Almost too long. Whittled down a little maybe could have been perfect.
I liked the first half better than the second. Some good tunes in here though, and a good introduction to Nick Cave. Interesting guy with a lot of music. Will be returning.
You know, I'm not much of a fan of double albums or albums that clock in over an hour. Not Abattoir Blues / The Lyre of Orpheus though. This is a surprisingly compelling collection of songs that kept me rapt all the way to the end, it's so well done. It takes a song or two to settle into the mood of this one, which is contemplative, lusty, irreverent and spiritual all at once. But once you get in there, it's a real pleasure to listen to. Personally, I favored the second half of songs (Lyre). Musically the album is gorgeous, with rich arrangements and splendid musicianship. I don't know if Cave or Conway Savage does more of the piano on this album, but it's absolutely lovely. Warren Ellis also adds some real multi-instrumental depth to these songs. I also really like the strong backing vocals, which I didn't initially care for. They really grew on me by the end of the album though. Cave's songwriting is elegant and poetic. As a songwriter, he is among the best of his generation. He has a way of turning a phrase that few songwriters have. Fave Songs: Messiah Ward, Spell, Breathless, Easy Money, Carry Me, Babe, You Turn Me On, Let the Bells Ring, Cannibal's Hymn
Really loved this

If you're a fan this double album (really two separate albums) is one you'll already own. If you're not a fan, try this. If you're not a fan afterwards, go away.
Enjoyed this a lot. Great variety in the music, nick cave has a wonderful voice
Quite enjoyed this one! A bit too long for my attention span but that's a me problem.
Hrátt og gott.
Unlike anything I have ever heard before.
An epic album, at least in length, but really highlights Cave's strengths as a songwriter and performer. Bowie-esque in parts, but still a distinct and unique sound.
I was a late getting into Nick Cave and this is where I entered. Driving across the Nullarbor in the late afternoon, chasing the sun, windows down to compensate for the lack of air con and this blasting out, counting the road kill per km to pass the time and the continuous terror of WA road trains.
Go Australia! 🇦🇺
Drugi dio albuma odnosno The Lyre of Orpheus > prvi dio albuma odnosno Abattoir Blues. Oba super na svoj način, ali više volim The Lyre of Orpheus Cavea.
Was never a big fan of Nick Cave and really didn't understand why people liked him. After listening to this album I finally got it. Not really my kind of thing, but now at least I understand what the hype was about.
8/10
better than expected, great album on both sides
Some interesting tracks 3.7
Not bad! Couldn't find any stand-out tracks though.
Godt, groovy. Selvfølgelig er vokalen fantastisk
kæmpe champ
8/10
I've never been able to get into Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds. I always found their music to be too dark, too dense and antagonistically difficult to listen to, so I didn't have high hopes for this. I was wrong. It's a great record and one I'll probably listen to again. Not a flawless 5 for me but really good nonetheless. O Children in particular was a standout for me.
Slow at times, but good for the right setting. First artist that was new to me.
The abattoir blues section of this album was awesome. It reminded me a lot of meatloafs bombastic, operatic rock music and I would’ve given it a five. Unfortunately, the second half of the album slows down and becomes much more like the boatman’s call, which I’m less fond of. Overall, it’s still a solid album but the first half is much much better. Fav songs: get ready for love, hiding all away
Long album but quite a journey
O children is next level mooi
-"Get Ready For Love" is very catchy and just great overall. Totally sounds like something right out of the 80's -"Hiding All Away" has some seriously heavy guitar that totally seems like metal, but the song seems overall in the rock category. Very cool -Great heavy drop in in "Fable of the Brown Ape" -I like the subverted expectations on the lines "Orpheus looked at his instrument/And he gave the wire a pluck/He heard a sound so beautiful/He gasped and said 'Oh my God'" -"There She Goes, My Beautiful World" jams -Some songs were pretty cool, some were less cool, but overall it was a solid album
Loved this album and the dark, poetic vibes. Maybe a 5.
I'm a huge Nick Cave fan, and I've listened to Abattoir Blues quite a bit, but I haven't given The Lyre of Orpheus its due in close to a decade as the slower of the two companion pieces. Revisiting it now that Cave has released albums like Ghosteen and Carnage puts it in a very different light. Orpheus is still the weaker half, but it has a warmth not present in some of his more recent somber outings. While I overall prefer the Blixa era of the Bad Seeds, this is still a great album.
Long double album but a great one! Really liked the vibe/atmosphere of the album, every song has its place on the album and is minimum a decent song
its great
The extreme rock n roll takes your mind to a good place. Nice vocals and instrumental tunes.
Good. Solid. Nick Cave.
Liked this one only knew their Kylie duo until now. very Richard Thompson
I went into this with very low expectations since I had never heard of it and it didn't initially seem like something I would listen to, but I actually really enjoyed it. There she goes, my beautiful world was the real standout for me.
Have only listened to boatman’s call and ghosteen before and love both. This is a different kettle of cocoa altogether. Much more elecky guitar and rocky riffs. Some beautiful raw emotion in there. I will want to listen to this more as some tracks really caught me. Very fine indeed
Confession time: I've never knowingly listened to a full album by Nick Cave with or without his Bad Seeds. Why is that? Have I been put off by the fanatical devotion him and his Seeds seem to elicit? Maybe. Either way I was wrong and stupid not to.
Really damn good.
Dark, funny, aggressive, pretty. An accomplished and spellbinding album. Enjoyed every minute of it.
I like Murder Ballads more, but this was really good.
Fantastic
Listened without the ability to look at song titles so I can't reference individually (except The Lyre of Orpheus, a high point, and I looked up Spell cause I like the sound of that one too), but overall this is good! It's definitely too much, though I don't remember obvious low points. Think I prefer disc 2 over 1. It's very much a 3.5 and I waffled on which way to split that, but I'll give it a 4 cause it's never bad and it's very good often enough.
Each song is so good, with none feeling out of place. The gospel gives it an extra punch without overstaying its welcome, and the production is exquisite. Enjoyed the first half compared to the second, but still easily my favorite album so far.
Kyllähän tää ihan toimii. Levyssä on tavaraa paljon. Tätäkin pitäisi varmaan jaksaa pyöritellä useamman kerran spotifyssa ennenkun aukeaa kunnolla.
Pakko sanoa, etten ollut koko miehestä tahi yhtyeestä kuullut. Tykkäsin kuitenkin musiikista, useampi erittäin miellyttävä biisi!
Kyllä tämän miehen äänessä tiettyä karismaa on. Levyltä jäi mieleen erityisesti Nature Boy.
Enjoyed this. Didn’t know what to think at first. Was way better than I would have imagined. I’m not familiar with any other work he’s done, but this has intrigued me to delve a little further.
I like this.
Pretty good! I think it slows down a bit during the second album (I prefer the first album/part), but it's still enjoyable enough all the way through.
I love Nick Cave. But I have always struggled with the first half of this double album. I love the 2nd half. But the 1st half does have my beautiful world on which is majestic tune. 4/5 mainly as the man’s a genius.
Really enjoyed this. I like the contrast between the two discs. Much more accessible than I would have thought. I like the story telling in the songs. A previously un-listened to album and artist that I am sure I will be returning to.
What an album! Love the dirgey, bluesy ballads, the dense dark lyrics, the gospel singers, the occasional string arrangements and the head-on collisions with cacophonic guitars on the first disc. Over the years I’ve been an appreciator, but not necessarily a fan of Nick Cave. I'll be listening to this one a lot. I would have given it a 5 but Sue says it's a 4. More like a 9/10.
Not really something I am always listening to, but thats some quality music for sure
Vraiment bon.
enjoyed this a lot while finishing my work.
i can't hear them now without seeing peaky blinders in my mind. this is not a bad thing. i also never really realized how much his voice sounds like richard thompson's.
Pretty surprising
this shit was catchy ngl, pretty cool 💀
Pretty good, might listen again
Pretty good, some interesting tunes
It was great album
Vaikken mikään valtava Nick Cave fani olekaan, niin tämä levy on aina maistunut mainiosti. Räväkämmät biisit (Get Ready for Love, Nature Boy, There She Goes My Beautiful World yms) ovat aivan timanttia.
good stuff
Starting our poorly but really liked it over all
Slightly weirder rock than I go for, but good. I could see some of these songs on a soundtrack or something.
A few stand out tracks. Overall liked it alot more than I thought I would
Solid album. Not my normal vibe, but I dig it. Great talent.
Crooning but in a way that I actually didn't mind? Melodic and smooth.
Couple of tracks I really didn't like but 6 or 7 that I loved (everything from track 5 onwards basically)
Kinda Jesus-y? - Maybe just the first song. Pretty rocking though. Feels like something I would've been into in my early 20's. Maybe revisit this.
Very nice album. Two halves sound different which was nice More lively than the more recent stuff I'm familiar with. Great
He did not have to go so hard on There she goes🔥🔥; slow burn until Abattoir where it finds its stride. Title tracks great, good listen.
Much more rock based than the others of his that I’ve heard. Liked this a lot
Not all great but great enough. One of his best.
Very strong as double albums go. Glad to have heard Breathless for the first time in a long time
An unexpected banger, I love the bass on this album, and of course the lyrics have been amazing. Standouts are Get Ready For Love, Hidden Away, Breathless, and O Children
A double album that could (should?) have been a single album. I really enjoyed the songs with the backing choir. Best track: There She Goes, My Beautiful World
Pretty long (it is a double album). Love the choral elements, Nick's voice works wonderfully with the sound of a full choir. Can be a little repetitive, but gives me the feeling of gospel music at times. 3.5 stars. Favorite tracks: "Hiding All Away", "Supernaturally", "Carry Me", "O Children"
most of the songs here are individually really good (i like the gospel influences a lot) but as a whole this album is in a really weird place. it's too disjointed to really flow well at all, but it's too homogenous to use that as a strength (there's not that much difference between abattoir blues and the lyre besides one having electric guitar and one not). it doesnt help that its like 80 minutes long when all the progression is so disjointed. also theres enough albums that arent quite as good as the rest, or just have mediocre sections in them i cant give this anywhere near a bad score and maybe it just wasnt clicking hard enough but i cant help but feel like there was a better album here somewhere. w/e its still good just maybe not all at once
Lite mer rockigt än The Boatmans Call.
Not bad. Original voice, interesting instrumentation, good variety. Although it seems they try too hard at times. Also, the rhyming philosophy was a bit maddening. In the end the simpler quieter songs were better.
It’s worth it to lock in for the lyrics, because they’re pretty good. The best part, I would say.
Doesn't sound bad, but a bit long. Maybe I'll come back it with more time.
strong opening track. there's a couple of songs i like. great discovery
Get Ready for Love There She Goes my Beautiful World Nature Boy Let the Bells Ring Supernaturally. Disk 1: 4/5 Disk 2: 2/5
I like this sound of this, but Nick Cave in general is a bit out there for me. Funny thing is that this doesn't really sound like a Nick Cave album to me.
Least bad nick cave album thus far
Bit iffy on this one, some of the songs didn't grab my attention, but there was a few I liked and would listen to again
Consistently good without being great
Found myself enjoying elements of it. But I didn't enjoy it as a whole. The songs are long, 6 minut songs seem 12 minutes. The album is long, it felt like 2 hours.
Nick Cave mit Gospelchor
Nick Cave is one of those musicians that - on paper - checks all the boxes for me: poetry in the lyrics, a weirdo, cool guitar work, and arty. However, I'm never taken in by it, it just kind of exists.
Imagine Nick Cave at a party, just standing in a corner glowering and mumbling bible quotes and coining new sexual metaphors.
Way too long. I can probably count on one hand double albums I think were worth doubling up for. This should be 2 albums. The last Nick Cave album I got had a lot of people saying he’s pretentious. Maybe you can say that about the lyrics, but the music here is actually very down to earth. Listening past the lyrics you pretty straightforward rock music in a very familiar sonic flair. I like it, but will likely not be returning.
While I generally enjoy Nick’s albums which are engaging, often interesting lyrically, there is a point where you have to reflect on whether you are really evaluating Nick’s work against his entire discography or are you evaluating his work against the universe of interesting records. Such is the case with Abattoir Blues. And in re-listening to this record it becomes clear that while this is one of the better records in his discography and certainly better than most of his work in the 90’s and early 2000’s, this record really doesn’t measure up well against the massive amount of equally interesting, important and memorable records that are out there. The proliferation of quality music and musicians, particularly in this particular post-punk subgenre, makes it difficult to rate this record as just average. Did you like Idles, Fontaine’s DC, the latest Cure record or any of a host of bands working in the same creative space? So, while I enjoy this record and recognize that a couple of tracks are truly memorable and bear repeated listening, the same can’t be said of the entire record. Which seems a shame but the competition is fierce. 3/5
High quality, just too long
Gospel, then rock, the something else.
Getting a little Iggy Pop and Bowie out of this
Honestly, just wasn't feeling this one. Some cool moments for sure, but 90 mins of Nick Cave is maybe just too much for me.
I'm conflicted on this one. On one hand the style is kind of interesting, the music is great, they're clearly talented. I couldn't figure out if this was meant to be religious or not. It kinda seems like it was meant to be gospel-y. The vocals were pretty unique, it sort of became a detraction by the end of the album though. The biggest problem is everything is too long. Sinking an hour and a half into an album is quite a task. If they had cut it down a bit, I think I would've appreciated it more. It's a bit of a mixed bag altogether.
Disc 1 - 3/5 Get Ready for Love - 4/5 Cannibal's Hymn - 3/5 Hiding All Away - 3/5 Messiah Ward - 4/5 There She Goes, My Beautiful World -3.5/5 Nature Boy - 3/5 Abattoir Blues - 2.5/5 Let the Bells Ring - 3/5 Fable of the Brown Ape - 2/5 Disc 2 - 2.5/5 The Lyre of Orpheus - 4/5 Breathless - 2.5/5 Babe, You Turn Me On - 2/5 Easy Money - 3/5 Supernaturally - 3.5/5 Spell - 3/5 Carry Me - 3/5 O Children - 2.5/5

This is a bit of a cheat from Nick Cave. A double album, with each part having it's own name and both albums sounding different? Isn't that just 2 separate albums? Abattoir Blues is the best of the 2, and on it's own is a 4 star album. It opens strongly with Get Ready For Love and tracks such as There She Goes... and Nature Boy are enjoyable and uptempo. The Lyre Of Orpheus seems to piggy-back on this, and apart from the title track, which reimagines the story of Orpheus and his wife in an amusing fashion, there isn't really too much holding the attention. So, we average out at a 3, but wonder why the double album. The gospel choir is a good touch throughout though. Cave's voice is naturally melodramatic and it provides a lift.
3.5
Nick cave redemption arc!
Better than I expected as I did not get along with the last album of theirs I listened to! 3.5 rounded down as quite long and my attention span is rubbish
Having now completed my Nick Cave discography dive, I can attest that my life is no more fulfilled now than before I began. That being said, this is the best of the bunch. But only marginally.
I like this, but I don't quite love it yet. If I listen to this in the right mood, I think it'll really click for me. Regardless, the drums on here sounds great, so punchy and loud. They really lead a lot of these tracks sitting right in the front of the mix. Nick Cave's vocals are also a standout for me. His voice sounds very goth rock to me and its awesome on these songs. This is one I plan to revisit.
Oh, it’s definitely a mixed bag, but it was a great album to walk to work with and I’m curious to look at this band more in the future some of the lyrics was a little wonky, but it got better as I got used to the sound of the band perfectly middle of the road going to give you guys a solid three
Much better than the previous album I had from this band (Murder Ballads) which I couldn’t get through. I liked the sound of this much more, but it did feel unnecessary in its length. 3/5.
I struggled to interpret the album fairly given that it's so lyrically heavy. It seemed really dark and sexual throughout, with a lot of references to the butcher. I didn't get a lot out of it, but could see myself listening again to try and figure it out.
When i first saw the ablum and the reviews i was a little hesitant if i wold actually enjoying but after listening to it fully i can say it starts great but as it goes on it begins to sound the same over and over with little difference but some honestly great songs just gets a little borning if you listen to them all after another but is still worth a listen if you want some background music.
7.5/10 Favourites: Cannibal’s Hymn ⭐️ Breathless Babe, You Turn Me On Easy Money
Nick Cave is a name I heard a lot on Reddit as some kind of real cool awesome must listen music guy. To be absolutely fair, I was entertained by some of these tracks, but there are just too many songs on this album that are not adding very much. Make it 40-50 mins long and we'd have an actual good album on our hands. I found it interesting that he added so much choir singing in the music, and I like what it brought, but not much else to love beyond that. It's fine, I don't hate it, and it could've been shorter
Would listen again.
Solid, 3/5
Double albums are definitely not for the casual listener. Exhausted by the time Lyre started.
Would be a grower no doubt.
The first half sounds like a better version of The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, the commonality being Nick Cave positioning himself as the energetic and reckless entertainer. The lower key second half sees Cave performing chaotic piano ballads with a rickety band around him twanging guitars and thudding muted drums. I prefer him in the more amped up mode but can appreciate the vivid textures of the more acoustic set. All together it is far too long for me though and not enough songs grab my attention enough - despite the excellent musicianship and craft behind them.
Kind of meh
He has a distinctive sonorous tone which imparts a certain gravity on every work he sings, but when you dig into the lyrics, they're mostly about girls and being outdoors. The bad seeds add an interesting dynamic to the quiet, quiet, loud formula - the quiet sections have the best ear candy. Little sonic peccadilloes pervade and have you asking "how did they do that?" Ultimately, I can;t forgive him for dating P.J. Harvey when I never got the chance, so take your 3 Nick, and be glad of it!
Okay, that's enough NC albums, thanks. That being said, this was definitely my favorite out of all the ones this list has on it. Wish I heard this during fall/winter, I know this shit would have had some heavy vibes with some cool weather (it's May rn). Will have to revisit in October or so.
Both unpleasant and pleasant, only nick cave can do that.
별로
It started rough but honestly the sound and music grew on my as I listened. It's not bad by any stretch, but Nick's voice does get old after the first album. I may revisit this album, it's got some great stories and I love the bluesy Deep South inspired goth rock. It's a 6/10
better than expected
Like Leonard Cohen, Nick Cave is cool to be into. Yes he does write some good songs. That Gravel voice just isn’t for me. Not my favorite but at least I didn’t get Morrissey today
Never really listed to Nick Cave before. Was entertaining though!
Some great tunes!
Buena cancion de HP
This guy makes me feel like anyone could make music if they were pretentious enough. Just look at the title... That being said, I did enjoy a few songs, so I have to give it a decent score. The style feels overused throughout, I enjoy very varied albums. And some of the lyrics man… Please listen to ‘Fable of the brown ape’, you’ll understand what I mean. Maybe I’m not ‘profound enough’ to understand them.
3.4
Before listening, I've never been a fan of Nick Cave. Do I have to listen to this? No, I don't HAVE to, but I choose to as part of this project. Ok - after listening. Not as bad as I expected. There were some pretty decent moments. Still don't love Nick Cave, but I understand why he has fans.
I enjoyed this
I liked some songs but on the whole did not care for it.
not my cup of tea but obvious merit
The more of his albums pop up the more I’m questioning whether I actually enjoy Nick Cave or i just recognise his talent and can’t separate the two the way I can with other artists for some reason? Anyway, I don’t love the production of this - for me it’s noisy, grating, and overwhelming. I liked side 2 a lot better and from Supernaturally onwards it’s pretty good. But I’m still not convinced it’s a must listen as a whole record.
The album was moody, but in a good way. You can feel the sentiment of the songs in every instrument. I did think it was a little long. Double albums have become kind of a groaner going through this list cause if you don't like it that much you're stuck with over an hour of tunes.
After a lukewarm review of another Nick Cave record yesterday, I'm rewarded with a double album today. I'm still not sold. 'Nature Boy', 'Babe, You Turn Me On' and 'Supernaturally' stand out and it's not all bad but I don't gravitate towards Nick Cave's slightly amelodic style of rock
OK
okay fine
Meh
I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it. It was a decent bluesy album, but I don't totally understand the love this album was getting. I actually thought some of the songs towards the end were a little better, pretty easy listening. I like his deeper voice as well, but I'm not dying to listen to this again.
Solid rock/alt-rock album, hard to go wrong with Nick Cave Fave track: There She Goes, My Beautiful World
Some solid Nick Cave goodness. 3.5/5
It's just... so long.
Another double album is killing me rn There was some good stuff on here and again I think I’ll probably have to come back and listen to the whole thing again properly to actually enjoy it. O children was probably my fav off of a single listen 3
Liked it more than the last Nick Caves album. The backing vocals were nice and help offset my distaste for Nicks singing abilities. Find out next episode (album) whether Nick Cave continues to exceed expectations!
Good voice. Album drones on for too long IMO
Nice albums but not my cup of tea
I liked this, I didn’t listen to the whole thing but it was comforting because it was something I could see my dad or Grace putting on. I think this is kinda the vibe I want to be able to reach for, calm and chill but still interesting rock music.
Did nothing for me!
Nick Cave is an artist who rewards deep investment, and Abattoir Blues / The Lyre of Orpheus is clearly the work of a serious and gifted songwriter operating with real conviction. The gospel choir that drives much of Abattoir Blues is a more muscular and integrated use of backing vocals than you might expect — call and response as force rather than decoration, which lands considerably better than the syrupy approach that undermined Solomon Burke’s record earlier in this project. Cave’s voice is deep, theatrical, and literary in a way that’s clearly an acquired taste. The words are doing heavy lifting throughout, dense with imagery and allusion, and whether that reads as richly rewarding or slightly exhausting probably determines where this record lands for any given listener. For this one, it lands somewhere in between. The surprise is “Babe You Turn Me On” — a warm, melodically direct piece with an almost Neil Diamond grandiosity that Cave commits to completely and without irony. It’s the moment where the emotional temperature rises above the surrounding atmosphere and reminds you what this band can do when directness wins out over density. The double album format gives the fine stretches room to accumulate, and there are enough of them to keep this comfortably in three-star territory. Pretty good throughout, occasionally better than that, never quite crossing into something that demands return visits. A genuine three — respected, occasionally surprising, and ultimately content to stay at arm’s length.
This sounds perfect for when I enter a Western saloon and grab a beer. But that'll probably never happen, so chances are slim I won't hear this again and I'm okay with that
