Reviews (page 7 of 12)

Another album I would've never given a shot if it wasn't for this project, by the halfway point of the opener I had a general idea of where this album would go but I wasn't disappointed, finally glad to give the notable Nick Cave a chance

Several songs in and I feel nothing special coming from the speakers. I noted that the wiki for this album mentions that this may not be the best album to start listening to Nick Cave with. Such is my lot. It’s not the music’s fault; I just wasn’t up to this style of music tonight. Couple that with the fact that this is a double album, not good in this case. So the rating, I’ll be fair and give it a 3. I’m sure it’s better than that, but not for me, tonight.

I can see the dive bar this is playing in. Great atmosphere.

Eh. It's music, I think?

I liked this, but I didn't love it desperately. It went on a decent journey and enjoyed most of the songs, but there was something missing to make it great I couldn't quite put my finger on. It's a great title though.

Second half much better than the first. Never known so much business and musicianship that amounted to be so boring in the first half. Was getting genuinely annoyed. Don't get the fuss for this guy.

Zu lang! So viel Nick Cave braucht doch wirklich kein Mensch, so viele ähnliche Songideen.

Interesting

Nick Cave displays a variety of singing styles throughout the album in which his vocals range from not great to a little better. The instrumentals were better. I did also enjoy the incorporation of a choir in some tracks. There were several interesting compositions sprinkled throughout the tracks. Overall this record was okay.

Everything sounds kinda alike

Half of the album has "the Birthday Party" heavy rock energy with the unstable vocals and hard plodding and the other half is a much softer or melodic which I was much more partial too. I saved a few songs that really grabbed me (There She Goes, My Beautiful World, Let the Bells Ring). I think when the drums take a step back I tend to lean forward to hear the other instruments take center. Overall a good first impression of the band that showcases an interesting variety while staying true to their previous sound. Also enjoyed Nature Boy, Abattoir Blues and Supernaturally

Had never heard this whole album, disk 1 was great.

Have generally thought Nick Cave is overhyped - I've not connected with any of his stuff. That said, I thought the album was decent. Some good, genuine honest rock tunes. I liked the addition of the gospel choir - added something different. But it was too long. 17 songs of Nick Cave in one sitting is a bit much.

Had a nice sound just was not a fan of the singer

Ja in ordnung

Maybe I'm not listening carefully enough to the lyrics, but I let my focus on the vocal performance here effect my enjoyment of the album. The backing choruses are great when they're there. There are some songs here I liked, including "Get Ready for Love", "Spell" and "O Children" and I feel like this is the sort of album that could grow on me.

Decent.

Was slightly dreading this, as I didn't care for Ghosteen, the only other Nick Cave album I'd listened to thus far. Was pleasantly surprised tho

Another overloaded double album that would have been a great single album.

solid and a surprisingly listenable double album

Good album overall, some songs are better than others but not by much. Anyway, definitively not for a bes 1001 album list

Eh, it was ok. Didn't feel like anything special.

Decent.

I was today years old when I found out that Nick Cave did the song Harry and Hermoine slow dance to in the seventh film. If NC had picked a lane and lessened the length by about 25-30 minutes, this could have been great. I liked the more listener-friendly style he had put himself into here on the majority of it. And then there's some "weird for the sake of being weird" songs that do nothing for me and just end up taking time.

Decent writing. I think I’ve heard Nature Boy before but Outside of that, it was all pretty good. I’m learning, however, that double albums are unbelievably inconvenient to listen to if it’s not something I actively seek out. I won’t take points away for that.

It’s not my favorite Nick Cave album—that’d be the, erm, raspier The Boatman’s Call—but “Nature Boy” and “Hiding All Away” are favorites. The album lingers a bit. 3.5?

Honestly some really great stuff in here but did it neeeeeed to be a double album

No experience of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds before this, so should be interesting as always. Right off the bat with "Get Ready for Love", I see he's one of the 'talking singing' artists which, after Patti Smith, I have started to really dislike. Tonally, with the instruments and the backing singers, this song has everything I do usually like in music. The problem is Cave. Later in the song it's evident that he can sing... I have just never understood the appeal of just talking on a track as its always so jarring to hear. Between "Cannibal's Hymn" & "Hiding All Away" it's more of the same criticism... incredible emotion invoking instruments and backing singers... then there's Cave with his less than profound garble over the top. Despite this, I think there is possibly just enough here to grow on me over time. I'm only on "Messiah Ward" and I feel pretty confident already in my conclusion on this album. Its gorgeous and musically outstanding... if you can squint your ears and cause a rush of blood fierce enough to block the voice of Nick Cave out. ...I am always wrong when I write these conclusions prematurely, as "There she goes, my beautiful world" was so much better than the rest of the tracks so far. "Nature Boy" was almost good, apart from Cave's insistence on some tonally flat ramble at a couple of points in the song. I don't think I've ever been so frustrated with an album; for me, it is so 'almost there' with it's greatness. Cave can sing, just like Patti Smith, but instead do something entirely subpar with these poetic monologues that just sound awful. "Abattoir Blues" frustrating, "Let the Bells Ring" great, "Fable of the Brown Ape" awful, "The Lyre of Orpheus" also frustrating... as was "Breathless". I have to give it 3 stars; I cannot deny that there is -something- here that kept me listening. I wouldn't be surprised if, one day, I come to appreciate Cave more than this first divisive listen.

I love the blues/gospel feel mixed with sardonic/dark lyrics. Would have given Abattoir Blues 4 stars as a standalone album but felt Lyre of Orpheus dragged a little bit. Might just need to spend more time with the full album.

Get Ready for Love There She Goes, My Beautiful World Nature Boy

I appreciate the talent, and it was fine to listen to, but didn't really pull me in.

Some great lyricism on this one. I think I liked the opening and closing tracks the best. My main problem is that it is too long; 82 minutes is a long album.

I like this album more than the other nick cave album on the list! Even added a couple songs to my likes.

Yet another Nick Cave album that is quite well crafted, different from the last album of his I heard, and yet it’s not something I’d put into heavy rotation.

It is good music, albeit weird, but not something I would listen to regularly.

*Really loved parts of this that were bluesy and up tempo. *So dense that the parts that were slower to me, really dragged or at least took up time. *Would give it a 3.5.

Enjoyed it

Bbq restaurant soundtrack

Enjoyed, but when I’m in the mood for this genre

I don’t know. This is my first Nick Cave album, and it was fine. People seem to really love him, I find him very annoying. So I was expecting some really cool music, and it was fine. Not too good or bad. The band seemed tight.

Okay I gotta admit when listening to an album a day, an album that is an hour and 20 minutes long is hard to swallow. I don't exactly get the love, but neither do I dislike it all that much. I'm not really a huge fan of the singing, but everything else around it makes it work on some songs. Like look at the song O Children: It sounds pretty great, I like the backing vocals, but there's something about it that just doesn't hit for me. That's not to say this album is bad by any means, I really enjoyed songs like "breathless" and on the other end of the spectrum tonally enjoyed "There she goes, my beautiful world". I think my constonation comes from the back half being a fair bit slower and more subdued in a way I didn't really enjoy just as I was coming around to the first half. I think I'll have to come back to this album on my own time and listen to it in sections because I could see that improving my opinion, double albums are a bit too much to digest in one day.

A little better than how I remember some of the other Nick Cave albums on this list, but it still doesn't really intrigue me much.

I liked this more than most of the nick cave we've had, some of the music was nice some nice intricate guitar melodies here and there. Lyrically and singing wise, it's nick cave. The singing is sometimes quite good, the odd line is okay but the storytelling parts just don't land for me. I think this is a 2.5 but hasn't changed my mind about wor Nick

Quite liked it overall, however it suffers from length and dreariness. Could have done without the second CD, couldn't tell you if they were new songs or rehashes of CD1.

Wasn't convinced initially but it grew on me. It feels like something that requires properly listening to and I was drifting in and out. There she goes, my beautiful world stood out to me. I'll give this another go, but 3.5 for now

nick cave again… the middle of the album was good, all the other tracks were wack

Initially I was like oh I’m sad this sucks but then I read the reviews and that’s kinda the point. Good ethereal shit. 3!

Disc 1 - maybe 3, Disc 2 - solid 4

I'm not sure I've ever listened to Nick Cave before. I didn't mind it, but I'm not sure I'd seek out other records. There She Goes My Beautiful World is a 🔥song tho. I also liked O Children

omg harry potter

Very interesting. Loved the opening track then got a little weird for me. Not quite sure how to describe this, but had some elements of tears for fears, frankie goes to hollywood. I like the background gospelly stuff but not all the spoken word stuff? Get Ready for Love was the top track. 3/5

Jake:not really my thing Greg:been wanting to get into nick cave, wasn't my favorite but liked it enough to listen twice Annie:didn't finish it didn't really like it

I enjoyed this more than the previous Nick Cave album in this list. Unpredictable and quite odd with enough good songs to keep it interesting. Intrigued to see what the next one will sound like.

First album is a riot of blues, gospel and rock. Just far too long.

Not crazy about this one

Cool ideas but didn’t keep my attention

Listens: 2 Standout Tracks: There She Goes, My Beautiful World, Nature Boy, O Children I think this is now my third Nick Cave album on the List, plus a fourth if you count his first (or at least previous) band The Birthday Party. At the risk of going on a bit of a rant, why does Nick Cave have four albums on the List? They're like... okay? This album had a few good songs. It feels very big-band like, probably due to the backing vocals. There are a ton of bands that I haven't heard yet that I hope are on the list, but every time I check off a notch on the list, that's one less opportunity to hear something else. Instead, it's Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, again. About a 2/3s through the third listen I was basically like "eh, I want to listen to something else" and promptly put on literally anything else (Ataxia, John Fruscante's experimental rock band). This is middle of the road average album. I am not convinced it was something I needed to hear before I die. There's a whole lot of music out there and it's more than 3 Nick Cave albums.

00’s Rock ⭐️Get Ready for Love

A bit much but worth listening to

2000s alt rock. Surprisingly upbeat. Pretty cool.

Long, but less depressing than the other Nick Cave albums I listened to.

top 3 - Get Ready for Love, The Lyre of Orpheus, Supernaturally. I don’t know how to feel about this but I think it was just fine?

A double album that I prefer the second half on. Not an easy artist to listen to though, you have to be giving the songs your full attention to enjoy them.

Enjoyed disc 2 a bit more than disc 1

I was hoping to like this more than I did. Considering Johnny Greenwood of Radiohead plays with him these days. There were some good tunes, but man, did it drag. Sometimes double albums really hurt candidates on this list.

This album goes hard. There are several instances where the Christian imagery and biblical themes are too heavy for my preference.

DO NOT LISTEN TO THIS IF IT'S LIGHT OUTSIDE. This album made no sense to me, in fact I found Nick Cave to be quite boring until I went out into the wet and windy night. As soon as I stepped out, this became a rich and rewarding listen. Dark music for dark times.

man, i dunno. it wasn't so bad. but i don't like nick cave nor his voice

there were a couple good songs but it felt like secret christian rock. also it dragged

Are Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds a modern Frank Zappa? I didn't love this.

I liked this album, nick cave is again someone I've always know about but never really listed too. Very strong lyrics to create imagery

Seeing another Nick Cave album so fast felt like a very well-aimed kick in the balls. And even considering my masochistic tendencies, it was not pleasant at all. After last album I was left with inner, unexplainable hatred towards this man and his band of cumlings. Anywho, this album surprised me very much, first songs were very strong, a 4 star album for sure. And then the rest came - actually, most of the album... It became way more boring, nothing more stood out like the first tracks. An album that had such potential was failed by it's lenght - and I say it as a huge prog nerd who loves long songs and albums! So, Nick, this is better, you're evolving. You just need to learn when to stop.

I’ve never gotten into Nick Cave and this isn’t an exception. He’s just alright to me

They rock. Nothing notable though.

Compared to the other Bad Seeds albums, this is a lot less dark. Most of the tracks didn't really click with me, but there were some good ones like Let the Bells Ring, Supernaturally and O Children. Breathless is the pick of the lot though. It's a sweet love song with memorable vocal delivery, but as soon as I heard the second flute solo it went straight onto the playlist.

Thought this was pretty good as a whole. I've heard of Nick Cave, but never really listened to him. I liked what I heard here. The first half was more my style, music-wise, than the second portion. I thought the best songs came from that first section. Still, I enjoyed the second half too. The whole thing ran very long, which caused me to lose attentiveness a few times. Even so, I liked all the parts I was tuned in to hear, and it kept reengaging me. I don't know that I'd say this one was great, but it was pretty good. There really weren't any bad spots, just some parts that were more bland or boring than the rest. I'll also take some points off for the runtime. Even so, it was a strong listen. Overall: 3.75/5

Nice voice, interesting atmospheric songs. Some better than others. I really like the last one!

Repetitive and generically awesome and energetic, still not sure how I feel but definitely some ear worms in there

It was fine?

It was interesting but probably wouldn't listen to it again.

[Was wondering why this sounded familiar. I rated it already before we started our group! Original Review:] I like Nick Cave just fine, but this isn't among his best. Enjoyed listening to it, though. "Let the Bells Ring" is really a standout.

Shockingly high energy compared to the last Nick Cave album. I believe that this album is better than the last, but it still didn’t appeal to me as an album. I personally think the album is too long and that made listening to it feel more like a task than some music.

Admittedly, when I first saw the album I was... worried to say the least. I wasn't particularly a fan of Ghosteen, but this album took me completely by surprise. Also what are the chances that we got two Nick Caves and the Bad Seeds back to back? Crazy Like Ghosteen, this album takes time to grow on me. I wasn't crazy bout any of the songs, but the production and songwriting stuck out to me, and the gospel backing vocals are used well. I feel that it compliments the inspiration from blues rock and gothic rock. And while people praise Nick Caves writing, and as poetic as it may be, I think he tries a little too hard on his songwriting to make it took impressive by directing attention to the same analogies, and it can come off as pretentious. As for the second disc, the mood definitely softens, which makes it slightly more accessible, but is also more forgettable. Did I need to hear this before I die? No, but it is very interesting to see how Nick Caves and the Bad Seeds changed overtime.

I am enjoying the album, however I can't seem to listen to much else aside from "Breathless". This song is an absolute 10 out of 10.

Vaikka itseäni jonkin näköisenä musapepenä pidänkin niin Nick Cave on kyllä jäänyt itselle varsin mystiseksi ja tuntemattomaksi hahmoksi. Tämmönen tummanpuhuva mystisyys on monesti kyllä iskenyt omaan musahermoon, mut kyl tää silti lopulta jättää vähän kädenlämpöisen tunnelman

Tässähän oli vähän kaikkee. Pääosin kuitenkin turhan laiskaa omaan makuun. Supernaturally-kipaleen lisäsin kuitenkin omaan listaan, että jäi sentään jotain kerrottavaa jälkipolville. 3/5.

Tän rievän kuuntelu men enempi ja vähempi läpikuunteluks, joten persläpiarvostelulla arvosana on perusvarma.

I liked this a lot more than I thought I would - didn't expect much after encountering the 'Henry's Dream' album in this list. I really enjoyed the 1st disc, but the 2nd disc kinda lost me.

Liked the quieter tracks, the rest, not so much

Wasn’t feeling it sadly

Kind of boring, no song really stuck out besides o children, which i recognized from harry potter. it helped me focus on my work though. overall it was pretty calming

5.8/10

It's OK

Listened Before? N More Nick Cave. I hadn't heard much of him before this list but I've liked most of what has been included.... this is no exception, but it doesn't really stand out from the rest. Solid effort but not memorable personally. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Get Ready For Love

Good, not my typical listening. Would listen again, but probably won't go out of my way to listen to it.

Open track I quite like…a bit like The Damned 15 years previous…each track thereafter is a bit 1-dimensional. Adding the choir defo help to elevate some tracks. Can’t warm to his speak/singing. Probably a lot better live.

As usual with a nick cave album the marriage between the stilted vocals has to be placed firmly into the mix. His voice is too present on this album and as such not as enjoyable as his earlier work.

++*: Hiding All Away ++: There She Goes, My Beautiful World +: Cannibal's Hymn, Messiah Ward, Nature Boy, Abattoir Blues, Fable of the Brown Ape, The Lyre of Orpheus, Spell, Easy Money, Carry Me, O Children +-: Get Ready for Love, Let the Bells Ring, Breathless, Babe, You Turn Me On, Supernaturally 6,0/10

Some hits and some miss

I see the talent. It just isn't my cup of tea. I didn't realize this was the artist behind the Peaky Blinders theme though.

lots to unpack here.

Decent stuff. Little better than expected

It's alright I guess

strong start

Not bad, quite a long album but as a whole I enjoyed it

I honestly don't think I can explain why I wasn't into this... I've had the same experience with Nick Cave before. I look at all the pieces and think that it ought to be music I really like, but I end up sort of listless about it all. Sorry I don't have anything more profound for what is clearly an impactful album for many people!

Hadn't listened to this one a lot before, but really strong output. Didn't feel overly long for a double album.

Every song in this first half is a major production. The band has a big rock sound, and they're accompanied by a choir! I liked the first half more than the second, which was more like the soft-spoken folk-leaning music I expect from Nick Cave. But overall, this was one of the more purely enjoyable records I’ve heard of his so far.

I just got bored!

Besonders bekannte und prägende Stücke sind „There She Goes, My Beautiful World“, „Nature Boy“, „Breathless“ und der titelgebende Song „The Lyre Of Orpheus“. Inhaltlich kreisen die Texte um Kunst, Mythologie, Glauben und Alltagsbeobachtungen, ohne sich auf eine eindeutige Deutung festzulegen. Insgesamt ist das Album ein konzentriertes, ambitioniertes Werk, das die stilistische Bandbreite der Band deutlich zeigt und trotz seiner Länge geschlossen wirkt.

Liked the harmony’s with women background singers mixed Easy listen Haunting voice

first half great. second half not as great

This could have been two separate albums. It was okay.

As good as a lot of the songs were, very few I could get through without wondering “is it over yet” because of how long they were. But, like I said, the songs were overall pretty enjoyable :>.

Overall Rating - 2.76/5 (5.53/10). Decent album. Probably won't listen to anything from it again, but I don't regret listening to it.

Gets better and quite good by the end, but the first few tracks don't do the album justice.

Everything about this album was a 3. Musicality, lyrics, literally everything. No way this should be one of the albums on this list.

I know oh children from it I liked it it was quite slow and quiet but nice and calming for the most part

Better than expected. Tom waitsy. Too bloody long like. First half better the the last half. Standout - get ready for love, hiding all away, there she goes my beautiful world

Was ok. Bit long. Didnt suit my bike ride vibes

Hm I wasn’t drawn to this, kinda reminded me of a different version of my uncles current band - never listened to nick cave at all before and probably won’t go in the rotation but was not bad at all

Sometimes he's a whiny boy who can't get over PJ, sometimes he's the head of his odd little genre and banging out those murder ballads. This album swings from a one to a high four a few times

Didn't know what to expect getting a double album from Nick Cave this Monday, but I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. I definitely liked the first disc more than the second. I'd probably give the first disc a 3.5 or 4 on its own. The package deal however gets a 3/5.

I really like some of the songs in this ablum and think the rest is meh to below average, I think this album excelled where the songs were more energetic which wasn't enough for a four

It took me a few songs to realize this is the second NC&tBS I've been suggested here. After listening to this, I think I just don't have an ear for his music - it doesn't land well. This album had a few good energy songs, so I figured I'd put my rating at 3 instead of 2 this time.

this album is jst fine, it’s nothing amazing but i still like the majority of the songs enough to add them to my playlist. def way to long tho, i would have enjoyed this a lot more if it was only like 30-40 min

Honestly, the second half of disc 2 picks up pretty hard - power through disc 1 Best = O children or Easy money Skip = Fable of the brown ape

Decent 3,5

This retard couldn't even put the songs in the correct order in the YouTube playlist. Good thing is I'd only listened to the best song (O Children) before I noticed

The first album was world's better than "Ghosteen". There were large sections that I kind of enjoyed. Closer to a 4 than I would have expected. Second album was pretty meh.

Excellent storytelling

Some of the songs were catchy/fun to listen to, but most felt like average rock songs.

Really enjoyed definitely an album for a Sunday listen - but long so quite overwhelming to take in.

trying w this one. maybe i don't know enough about nick but by now.. over all these years - I appreciate him so much but this record seems to have great tracks dispersed between mediocre - bad ones, inconsistent

Several really good high energy tunes on here and a great band. Suffers from being too long. Not enough content to justify a double album. Should’ve just trimmed it to the best songs and made one great album.

If Tom Waits' ancestors had been transported to Australia...

Pretty rocking for a Nick Cave album but I can’t listen to a whole lot of his stuff back to back.

Long and not my kind of thing so found it difficult to wade through. I suspect there are some tracks that I would rate higher if I had a second run at this but don't find myself compelled to keep at it. Making belief in God a thing also a turn off for me.

Nick Cave definitely had a very clear vision of how he wanted this album to sound and flow. I think he's executed it well with some great tracks and interesting lyrics. Does go on a fair bit, though.

Love nick cave but I have to say I prefer him without the bad seeds. Some strong wings but not my favourite cave.

So this is the third Nick Cave album I was steered to in the past three weeks., one of FOUR of his albums on a list of albums I supposedly need to hear before I die that includes ZERO albums by Warren Zevon, an artist who I would argue has a similar dark aesthetic in his themes but a much more diverse set of song-writing skills. I've got nothing against Nick and his Bad Seeds (my ratings for Henry's Dream and Murder Ballads were both 4/5, which for me means "Very Good, I'd listen to this again), but there comes a point where too much inclusion of an artist has diminishing returns, glaringly highlighting how the exclusion of other artists altogether has to be a blind spot of the supposed expert compilers of the list.

Good singer, good band. Good music.

Nick Cave and the better seeds

This was alright.

Always listenable. Good influences and a slightly diffferent feel.

I didn't finish the whole thing, but I really liked Disc 1. Good weird for sure! Picking up a lot of elements from other genres (especially blues). Favorite Song (this listen) - Messiah Ward

I've quite a hard time rating this, if I could give 3 and a half I would but unfortunely given the rating system I couldn't warrant a 4. There were quite a few good songs, abattoir blues and hiding all away (albeit with the odd lyrics of the latter) were good, and O Children, which I recognised from Harry Potter was the highlight of the album for me. If the album had been full of songs like this it could have easily achieved 4 stars but fable of the brown ape and babe you turn me on, amongst others, just didn't stand up to this and in these songs his voice could be a little boring if not annoying at times. My criticisms are not to say that this is a bad album, just that it was inconsistent and so overall sits at decent, but not great. 65/100 Score edited 28/12/25 Score edited 11/01/26

I like Nick Cave just fine, but this isn't among his best. Enjoyed listening to it, though. "Let the Bells Ring" is really a standout.

Day704 - i keep listening to see if any song will stick out. so far no luck

Nick Cave often sounds to me like a Satanic Dylan. Whereas Dylan takes his cues from history, folk music and himself, Nick Cave sounds like "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" put to music. Sometimes it's not fun to listen to but one must respect it.

no coment

I am not a huge fan of Nick Cave. I try, but it doesn't stick with me. 3 because it's not bad and I recognize why people may find brilliant. Just not for me.

Intesting

Nothing on this album that I could get enthused about. I wouldn't mind hearing some of the tracks again, but others I would rather pass me by.

Alright, like 3 songs I liked out of the 17. Some interesting ideas in there, but the rest ranged from mediocre to meh

I rolled my eyes so fucking hard when I got this album. Henry's Dream was probably the bottom 5 albums I've listened to on so far, and please note I've already listened to Kollaps and Throbbing Gristle. Henry's Dream made me embarrassed to be Australian. So it's safe to say I was dreading listening to this one. Boy was I surprised. The first record on this thing, Abattoir Blues was fresh, light, and intensely entertaining. The same cannot be said for Orpheus, which was bland, dull, featured some of the worst singing on the record, and just left a sour taste in my mouth. What a shame. 4 for Abattoir, 2 for Orpheus. 3.

sounds ok

Appreciate some amazing lyrics and the music being way different than anything else.

Sure man

I don’t really get the Nick Cave fanboying. Some of this was good, other bits were meh. I don’t understand the need for the double-album here, both are fairly different and combining them doesn’t feel warranted

Second side is better. I think other records of NC&TBS are better. Don't know why this one is on the list.

A tale of two Nick Caves: One is giving full gospel-rock revival with There She Goes, My Beautiful World absolutely soaring — legit late-’80s “I Still Believe” energy. The other is whisper-singing deranged fairytales about Orpheus sawing his wife in half. It swings wildly between brilliant and “bestie… why?“

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds is one of those bands that's always been on the edge of my awareness but I never really listened to. The few Nick Cave songs I heard at the time fell flat on my ears. This album was a nice revelation. I really enjoyed it and will be playing it again. Time to check out some more Nick Cave.

It was fine!

Less depressing than ghosteen (ofc) Loved the harmonies in There she goes my beautiful world

Liked it but quite a few fillers

The highs are very high but I wish this was a bit more consistent throughout. As a double album it was a touch excessive and I was thrown hearing this after being used to 80s Nick Cave - the gospel-infused sound, production and songwriting all feels a lot more hopeful/clean but it might take another listen at some point to get me fully onboard.

What an insanely powerful first track to open the album. It’s completely different from what I expected, especially judging by the album cover. The musicianship is great, really talented performances, lots of rich orchestration and organs, the gospel choir adds a huge presence and the addition of some progressive elements makes everything much more interesting. This style of music isn’t entirely my thing, and nothing stood out to me in a way that truly grabbed me, however I do prefer the style of the first disc compared to the second one. It’s also quite a long listen, and being a double album that makes sense. Not exactly for me, but the creativity and execution are undeniable. I would say my favourite tracks are Get Ready for Love, Cannibal's Hymn, Messiah Ward, There She Goes My Beautiful World, Let The Bells Ring, Fable of the Brown Ape, The Lyre of Orpheus, Easy Money, Supernaturally, Carr Me and O Children.

get ready for love- 6 cannibal's hymn- 6 hiding all away- 6 messiah ward- 5 there she goes, my beautiful world- 5 nature boy- 6 abattoir blues- 5 let the bells ring- 5 fable of the brown ape- 5 lowkey boring sorry nick ily

May bear further listens “Nature Boy” is a banger, adding that to my liked list

I didn't mind it. Not my thing but the music was nice.

Some nice songs but not that memorable or unique. Fun to listen to once though I reckon a relisten would be a bit boring

surprisingly good

Like the idea but don’t like the music that much

Thought this was fine but it really didn't need to be this long

Slow to catch on. Most of the songs could be 1/2 as long. Some intriguing keyboard work.

Different vibe to the last one, more bluesy rock. Second song called Cannibal‘s Hymn of course he can’t not sing about eating flesh. I don’t think I like Nick Cave. Just not for me. It’s creepy in a creepy way. I don’t want to be prey. Messiah Ward is ok. There she goes, my beautiful world is actually very pretty. Nature Boy also. Abattoir Blues is devastating. Shoutout to the backing vocalists. The second disc is more melancholy and I don’t connect as much I think. Maybe the second part picks up a bit, like with the first record. Supernaturally is very folky with a nice rhythm. Back to the melancholy. Carry me is pretty, spiritual. O Children, too.

Enjoyable. More than expected in many spots. 3/5

I didn't expect to like this because of the vocals, but his voice actually works. Some good, dynamic songs here, though many are a bit slow for my preference. Listened before? N Saved to library? N Favorite track(s): Hiding All Away; There She Goes, My Beautiful World; Nature Boy; Supernaturally ⭐⭐⭐: Liked it. Saved some tracks.

Yikes, a double album on a Monday morning? I saw this group at Lollapalooza one year and it didn't make me want to go find more of their music. Let's see if the 30+ years since then have opened my palate up a bit... It may be just because I watched part of Rocky Horror this weekend, but at times Cave's singing reminds me of Tim Curry in that film. Other times he sounds like if Tom Waits had never smoked a cigarette. And this is another album (albums?) that sounds to me like it was written with a stage show in mind. This is OK. Don't love it, don't hate it. I liked the closer, "O Children."

Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds used to be high octane, but now he is just Tom Jones. Things change, I guess. What's new, pussycat?

first half is pretty solid but the idea of an acoustic second disc always tends to fall flat. cardinal sin of a double album is that it's just Too Darn Long

*Waits for the artsy music nerds to leave* Is it now safe to admit that I never really got into Nick Cave?

Good. ★★★

I like the music, but I think his voice is what keeps it from being a 4 for me.

fav song: easy money

I was able to enjoy this album much more than I did with Boatman's Call. Overall, though, I don't think Nick Cave's style really does it for me

I liked this one more than previous Nick Cave albums on the list. Wasn't awesome, but perfectly enjoyable, albeit long.

19/1001 First listen. Not a fan of Cave’s singing but overall this is good. Love the backup singing.

Album 71: 3/5 Given that the people who made this list are retarded, I've lost nearly all my faith in this list. With some rare patches of good music in-between, we've now arrived back at "Mediocre Music Station". This album fits it perfectly. It has some good songs like "There She Goes...", butit's just a few good ones, not the entire album. The rest spreads from interesting-ish to utterly boring. It doesn't help that it's all Rock'n'Roll with a chorus in every song. Makes the album a bit one-sided, you hear one song and you know them all. All in all, nothing special, but better than some overrated shit we've listened to before.

This was a bit of a grind. It’s ok, but every time I enjoyed a track, I wouldn’t enjoy the next one. Never listening to this again.

Very tricky to form opinions on a full double album in one day - will revisit this review over the weekend.

I am realizing just how much music Nick Cave has created. I'd never heard this album before. Nothing really stood out to me but perfectly listenable.

beetje lang

This album is one note for the entire hour plus run time, but at least it has the decency to be one good note.

Not for me

This had some interesting moments but ultimately I felt it was too long and too out there.

Overall not bad just not my cup of tea

Not only is this my fourth Nick Cave album on the list, but of course it had to be a double album too. I really wanted to like this one more, especially after such a strong start. “Get Ready for Love” was fantastic and easily one of the best Nick Cave songs I have heard so far. It had energy, grit, and that gospel-punk intensity that pulled me right in. Unfortunately, after that opening track, the album slid right back into typical Nick Cave territory. The pacing slowed, the mood got overly dramatic, and it turned into another long, brooding listen that felt more exhausting than engaging. The second disc did not help much either, just more of the same drawn-out gloom. The first song alone saves it from being a total miss. Abattoir Blues had the potential to be something great, but outside of that killer opener, it felt like a lot of filler spread across way too many tracks.

Love Nick Caves voice but the album was a bit all over the place. A bit too rocky I guess.

The older I get the more I appreciate Nick Cave. It's Dark but also creative and thats why it deserves to be here.

I fear I don’t get Nick Cave. This was more enjoyable than ghosteen but I fear it didn’t have the few brilliant points that made listening to that slog bearable in the first place. But it’s just better. I can’t give it an endless amount for nature boy but i really liked this song a lot. It’s not fun but the constant up and down is at least interesting. I’m really grappling with what I think about this album but I fear it’s just too long to make the bright spots stand tall. With grit teeth I give this 3 stars because I get it and it’s good but I never want to listen to this again.

Lots of religious undertones. But the music was good, I enjoyed it

O Children is one of my favorite songs of all time - this is my first time listening to the whole album. There is a lot of good, and a lot of okay. Nick Cave is an incredible songwriter who has some dark lyrics Best Song: O Children Rating: 7/10 Stars: 3

I had skipped this one when it came out. I had assumed it was an unnecessarily long collection of ballads which I had enough of on No More Shall We Part (my favorite Nick Cave album). But there’s a lot more variety here than I expected. Disc one has some tracks that feel a bit like okder Cave though sans Blixa and plus gospel backup singers. Disc two brings the soft ballads and stuff that sounds like Jimmy Buffet. A mixed bag for sure. More is less here and it’s far from a classic Nick Cave record.

ultimate rock vibes lowkeg 2 diff dics

Nick Cave is an artist I hear people talk about all the time but I've managed to stay completely ignorant of for my entire life (plus 3 years). Going into this, I know he's got a devoted fanbase but I have no concept of what his music sounds like. And now I get to find out with a double album, that's kinda fun! His voice has a lounge singer bravado/sleeze - a dark theatricality -that I do occasionally find compelling (The The, Electric Six, some Tom Waits, The Oogie Boogie Man in Nightmare Before Christmas, Dracula in Jason Segel's Dracula Musical "A Taste For Love", Richard Cheese, etc). It's compelling here, but it begins to wear on me over the course of the first disc. Thankfully, it's muted on the second record as they shift into more downtempo songs. "Get Ready For Love" - Starting the album with an in-your-face blues/rock song definitely makes me feel like I'm joining a conversation already in progress; there's no chance to get my bearings before getting the full force of NC&TBS directly in my face. It's their 13th album, so I guess they've pretty well established their sound and can expect you to know what you're getting into when you press play. "Cannibal's Hymn" - so close to being an earnest version of the Jason Segel Dracula Musical "Die. Die. Die. I Can't" that it hurts. "Nature Boy" - I missed this one initially, but on second listen this one stood out for me like "Supernaturally" did on my first pass. "Supernaturally" - this is the fourth-to-last song on the album, but it's the track that finally swayed me from "this is fine" to "this is pretty good". "O Children" - this must be the hit, because it has almost 200M more listens than any other song on the record. The backing vocals and harmonies were one of my favorite features of "Supernaturally", and they're back in full force here.

I liked the blues but the lyre held it back

high 3

Pretty good - I wasn't expecting to enjoy Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, but I did. Not sure it needed to be a double album, though.

I liked it a lot. But it is an album that is a mood, a whole mood. And I feel I would listen to it only when in that mood

6/10 I should like Nick Cave. I just don't. I don't dislike it, but I'm not sure why everyone likes it so much. To each their own. 9-19-2025

Never listened to him before. This is alright, could even go down the rabbit hole and listen to more of his catalog.

Decent albeit too long. If it was shortened to a single album, I would have liked it more. First disc is stronger and it rocks out surprisingly. Cave is an acquired taste and I have to be in the right mood. Still, I may revisit someday.

That felt SO long. The music wasn't bad itself but the double-album makes it overstay its welcome.

Not my thang 5/10

Passionate, intimate, exhilarating, meditative...

Growing on me at the end of disc one but still not completely convinced Disc two was so much better in every way Disc one 2 Disc two 4

Some ok songs but the album was way too long.

woah, nick cave is like, a lot cooler than i thought? reminds me of sort of a tom waits / leonard cohen vibe but a bit more melodic/musical. also reminded me of ben caplan (iykyk)

Good songs, but too much of it. Woulda been a fantastic 10 track album, instead it was kind of a slog. That said, there were prob 3-4 songs that will make into my rotation., and I recognized the last song from the Harry Potter movie (which always felt really out of place in that scene).

It was okay to listen to.

Pretty good

I didn't finish it. Too much filler. Very bluesy which is fine but not really my thing

Very nice and Jazzy. Not my particular cup of tea but good overall.

Had the boatsman call few days before this and was left disappointed with how the album develops. Listening to this A side is eye opening to the diversity in their musical work. B side really leans into the strengths of the band, in my opinion. His voice is beautiful and those melodic, drawn out songs really suit them. Not great by any means, but interesting listen

It’s usually hard to keep my attention for a double album, so it was quite something that my interest was mostly maintained throughout the album’s runtime. Some of the album was a bit too far out there for me, and some of it did lag. Still a very intriguing sounding production. I didn’t really connect with it on a personal level, though it sounded good overall. The backing vocals really make this album feel grand. Solid listen.

While diving through Nick Cave a while back I came across this album, listened to it, but didn't care for it much. Now with a second listen, I respect it more. There are some killer tracks on this. Still I believe it to be one of his weaker album. Didn't need to be a double album. One volume with a selection of tracks could have been a masterpiece.

Correcto

Nick Cave has always irritated me a little. His voice is just... off. And his songs a bit too long. And not enough melody. A couple of these songs (e.g. Lyre of Orpheus) I love. But not the album as a whole. 2.5/5

Fairly OK. Surprised myself by liking Nick Cave.

What a strange man

Nick Cave being as weird and cryptic as ever. As a fellow member of Weird Union Local 898, I must appreciate this for contractual reasons. (But I would give it three stars even without a contract.)

I really liked it. Hadn't listened to too much Nick Cave, just the main hits. But this really piqued my interest. Will definately go back to this and re-listen. First 3 tracks of the 1st side and the last track of the 2nd (O Children). 3 stars feels low...

Previously rated: Murder Ballads (3/5) Ghosteen (1/5) The Boatman's Call (2/5) **************************** The first disc wasn’t too bad, maybe I’d even rate it 4/5 on its own. Then we had to have another 40 minutes, and that was just too much. It was well produced but reminded me of Neil Diamond music.

Not a bad album.

Some decent songs here, a lot more misses. Disc 1 is better

I like alternative rock and this album was no different. There was 2 tracks I really liked, Nature Boy and The Bells Well Ring. I never heard of Nick Cave but his tracks are what I like: rock music, upbeat and entertaining. I am a fan of this album and I enjoyed it. I would want to know what was the inspiration for calling it The Lyre of Orpheus since I am into mythology.

As with his other albums, I completely respect the artistry and thought that goes into his music. However, he kind of "talk sings", it wouldn't be remiss in a Broadway musical, which is really not my thing. But that's a me problem, doesn't mean he isn't very talented and accomplished at what he's going for.

long, but overall good

nice duality across the discs but didn't jump out for me

many emotions displayed throughout the album, not my style but I love nick cave in some more recent albums

Like a blend of Bowie and Tom Waits. And as with each of those artists, some tracks worked for me and some landed a bit wide of the mark.

If I took all the songs on this double album and cut half of them out, it might be a 4* album. If I'm being generous. But that's not the task at hand. His singing works for some of the song, but irritates me in others. The music's good in some, but meh in others. 3*

The music is really really good in this record. Can't say I've heard this album or any of the songs before. Lyrically, I get a Scott Walker feel. And vocally, I get a bit of Pete Droge. Honestly not sure why people are obsessed with this band. They sound great but they seem to have this cult following. I'll be sure to watch out for more.

big sound, a lot going on in every song. Really nothing stood out, voice isnt much and the sounds are deep but cluttered.

Enjoyable but not standout

it alright. Highlights: “Nature Boy,” “Lyre of Orpheus,” and “Spell”

top 3: - o children - easy money - spell special mention: - carry me - supernaturally - abbatoir blues

First half of the album was fire. The last song on the first half was a little weird. Me and Spencer both just kind of sat in silence listening to it when it came on. Very upbeat and noisy. Second half was not really as much of my thing but it was very well done.

It feels raw and interesting. I like the strange lyrics but ultimately I don't fully connect with it. Wouldn't mind listening again and/or listening to more Nick Cave music.

listened to little bit of both and preferred side 1 surprisingly

Not real familiar with them. Double album, only listened to the first record. Had some good rockers on it. 2nd record is supposed to be more mellow

Expected more. Maybe that's the reason I am only giving a 3 here. There are some really nice songs (Get Ready For Love, There She Goes My Beautiful World, Hiding All Away) on the album but the rest. The rest is ok. Some songs are a bit likable. But for me, they're not enough. And the main thing: I wouldn't listen to the album again after hearing it twice now.

I've never heard a Nick Cave song in my life, but it seems he has a very unique style, especially his lyrics. The album was pretty good, yet I didn't really vibe with it. The musicians are great, and I loved the gospel parts. fav tracks: "Get Ready for Love" is a great opener, "The Lyre of Orpheus" - the take on the myth was very creative, "O Children" is pretty epic. 3/5, not really my cup of tea, but I respect it. Maybe I'll give it another listen soon and focus more on the lyricism.

Actually enjoyed the album

Acceptable background music. Nothing too special, still better than Smiths...

Some great songs, some clunkers - ambitious, but too long.

Weird album with some good jams. The lyrics and lead singing are a but unhinged and some songs are giving I Think You Should Leave vibes, mostly The Lyre of Orpheus.

I'm not into the big choir-backed bombastic gospel sound, but I can understand why plenty of people would enjoy it. Sometimes Cave's delivery gets me - like the line "Sent sparks zapping out your face" from "Hiding All Away."

Honestly this one just flew by and blurred into the background. Hardly glowing praise but not a damning review like some of the screechy albums I’ve listened to

Not bad. High 7. 3.5

honestly pretty good

There are some pretty great tracks on this album. But there’s also plenty of filler that isn’t really interesting. Cut it down to a single album instead of a double and it’d be pretty solid

I think these are good artists. It's a long album though. Probably the least annoying post-punk album I've listened to so far. 3 stars

For me, this sounded like typical Nick Cave. Nothing to get too excited about. Nice to have in the background.
