Reviews (page 5 of 12)
The length of the album is absurd but damn when the choir comes in on Get Ready For Love you start to think 'thank god this is longer than 2 minutes' Cannibal's Hymn is proof to give music a chance, because that's twice now I've thought of turning this album off only to end up thinking 'damn this is pretty good' Overall, this album is not for the faint of heart. Not that it's hard to listen to, it's long. Roughly double the length of an album that would have come out in the last decade. edit: Just wrote that this is a literal double album in the most verbose way I could. I'm leaving it. Production wise, it's a great album with incredible and dynamic instrumentals that had me tapping my foot with most of the music. Lyrically I find this album lacking. Not in theme or content, but the vocalist's delivery of them tends to get repetitive over the course of the album's runtime. Despite this minor complaint, I'd listen to this album again.
Fabulous
Great album. Was wary it was two discs long but it delivered.
I genuinely hated the first few songs on this album and ended up really enjoying the rest of it….I’d like to give it a 3.5 but since that doesn’t exist I’ll round up. It genuinely surprised me on the back end
Hadestown story pretty good
I personally dont like nick cave very much, but is a fine album, i guess
Ghosteen is still my favorite Nick Cave album but this one is a close second. While I love Ghosteen for its somber ambience, I love this one for its bombastic expression. On the Abattoir Blues (disc 1) the drums are nice and roomy, bass distorted and growling and guitars are pushed to the edge. There are plenty of quieter moments but even then the band feels like it’s really having to fight the urge to break loose. Cave’s ability to tell a story and keep you captivated with his delivery is on display as well. The calmer feel of The Lyre of Orpheus (disc 2) is where the band catches its breath. It feels less urgent and more cautionary and timid. Overall the band shows its dynamic capabilities throughout the 1hr 22min run time and keeps me locked in the whole time.
Bruh, we just had a Nick Cave album a week or so ago.... No way he has multiple albums in the top 1001 albums, but clearly he does. What a world! Damn this app for fucking up my algorithm. The music is much more lively on this one, so that's good. In fact, the music saves this album. His voice kills me, though. I did enjoy Nature Boy and Let the Bells Ring. The music alone takes this to a 4.
Is this project making Nick Cave grow on me? I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. The music is really solid. He sounded less theatrical and lurid (?) than he did on Henry's Dream, but those elements are still present. The storytelling and the drama and his crooning delivery give the feeling of show tunes.
I would like to think when Nick was deciding what to name the album, when “ Abattoir Blues / The Lyre of Orpheus” popped into his head, he thought… I think this is just about Nick Cave enough.
Really enjoyed it all. Both sides are interesting in their own ways. Standout songs: Hiding all away There she goes, my beautiful world The lyre of orpheus Supernaturally
I found myself warming up to it as it went on. It borrows from the singer-songwriter ilk but places it in a much richer sound. The songs range from bombastic to quiet and melancholic. Cave's lyrics are consistently good.
A stunning and somehow underrated masterful double album from Nick Cave. An 82 minute album should really be intimidating but somehow this manages to be propulsive and magnetic throughout, with some of Cave’s biggest hooks balanced out by a darkly gothic foreboding. I would usually point out a standout song here, but genuinely everything is fantastic to the extent that I can’t choose favourites. Every song earns its place and its runtime and adds so much to the overall sound, whether it’s driving blues, angular rock, or just pure Cave songwriter-lamenting-at-a-piano-and-breaking-your-soul
Overall: 8/10 I have to admit, my exposure to Nick Cave's music is incredibly limited. Without looking him up, the only thing I'm aware I've listened to is his collaborative score for The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. Based on that score and my overall preconceptions of what Nick's band would sound like, I was really shocked to find how energetic this is! Nick has a lot of range with his voice and I love the gospel-esque backing vocals on some of these tracks. I also enjoy the fact that they aren't afraid to get a little weird (Fable of the Brown Ape is such a strange song but I love it). I haven't decided which half I enjoy more and I'm not sure if I'll ever listen to the whole thing in one sitting again due to it's length, but it's the rare double album where I think every track deserves to be here. Fav Song: There She Goes, My Beautiful World Least Fav Song: Spell
i was a bit skeptical for the first few songs and i was honestly kind of thinking "oh god a whole hour and a half of this?" but "There She Goes, My Beautiful World" converted me, and it was only up from there. as i said above, i love the Dylan/Cohen/van Zandt parallels in his songwriting and i think his lyrical imagery is beautiful, especially for the love songs. the album is a bit dense though, so i think i'll need another listen or two to really get the nuances of some of these songs but overall i think it's very strong! i don't think i'm quite converted on his voice- it's fine, nothing special- but i think he's a great lyricist. i was also recommended to listen to Let Love In as well, so I will definitely do that, and I'm looking forward to hearing more of his discography in general :)
Felt a little like a history lesson. All in all, not bad... I would listen to it again.
Thought this was brilliant, a double album concept that actually worked really well.
My head dropped when I saw we had another nick cave album, but this is excellent
Great album. Not in my top 5 Bad Seeds albums though
That was pretty cool. Not as melancholy as I was expecting.
It took me a couple of listens, but now I really like it. I’ve always known the occasional Nick Cave songs, but I’ve not really delved into it until now. I’m glad I did
Like Tom Waits and peat smokey scotch, Nick Cave is an acquired taste and I've acquired it quite easily starting with Peaky Blinders some years ago. I don't think he's as good a writer as Waits, but I largely enjoyed this.
The extent of my personal experiences with Nick Cave is very limited. And I wouldn’t call Junkyard by The Birthday Party a good introduction to him as a musician in any way. Partly because that’s not a very enjoyable record. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds have been around for a long time, and have continued to release music well into the 21st century. But I also wasn’t so sure a very lengthy double album is the best way to become accustomed to their music either. This is a double album in the truest sense of the term. It’s split up into two halves, or two different records, titled Abattoir Blues and The Lyre of Orpheus. And stylistically these two albums aren’t all that different. The latter half contains most of the softer, more folk influenced songs, while the first half has a lot more energy. An energy that is felt from the very first song. It reminded me of the opening track from Exile on Main St., where this intense party atmosphere envelopes the listener from the moment it starts. And I’ll admit that this did a far better job at turning me into a Nick Cave fan than I ever would have imagined. It made me want to seek out other albums and hear them. This was an exceedingly enjoyable listen from start to finish. Even on the songs I don’t enjoy, and quality of songwriting does not diminish. And every single song is instrumentally unique enough that I was never bored. I think I prefer the more energetic cuts personally. The folk stuff isn’t bad, but something like Breathless isn’t the best folk ballad I’ve ever heard. There are some really explosive moments all over this, like the end of Hiding All Away. Or Fable of the Brown Ape, which is a strange but cool way to close out the first half of the record. A lot of this energy comes from this gospel feel the whole album has, which is aided by the backup vocalists who are present on most songs. And they use this to create not only intensity, but also some really beautiful moments too. Like the whole of My Beautiful World, which is possibly the most well-put together song on the entire thing. O Children actually happens to be Nick’s most popular song on streaming, which probably has more to do with the fact it was featured in a Harry Potter movie. And I was a little let down by it personally. It definitely matches the penultimate track in having the most gospel elements, but I prefer Carry Me much more. I was shocked by how much I genuinely enjoyed this, and how much I had to say. And I look forward to whatever I hear from Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds next. Rating: 8/10
Typical Nick
Album #6 - 4/5 I took so long to rate this one because I listened to it about a dozen times to figure out how I felt about it, but I'm still not entirely sure! Overall, I did like it. It's unique with a lot going on. Touching on so many different genres, with really fascinating lyrics! So much power & energy in Nick Cave's vocals. Very gospel-coded. I struggled to pick stand outs, because there were things that I both liked and disliked about every single song on both discs, but it somehow comes together to be a powerful complete package! Stand outs are: "There She Goes, My Beautiful World," and "Easy Money". I did also love "Fable of the Brown Ape," and "The Lyre of Orpheus," but they're not ones I'd put in my regular rotation - a bit too dramatic for daily listening. Overall, this album was a great listen!
Surprisingly good album! I feared the worst when this double album was generated, but not once during its 82 minutes playtime was I bored. It only gets a 4 because none of the tracks really stood out as winners. Guess it will be even better with more listens, but no time today.
Nick Cave.
Bro really made one good album and then never again.
The lyrics might be a little dramatic for my taste. But overall this was a pretty compelling album. I'll need to come back to it. One listen was definitely not sufficient.
Wow. I am shocked. Not by the album or anything like that. It's really good as I'll get to in a bit, but there's something even more shocking. I'm surprised that it took me 443 days to get a Nick Cave album when he has 5 of them on the list (6 if you count the Birthday Party)! That's a lot. Surely there's something about Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds that warrant the high album count. Fortunately, while 5 albums is still too much for an artist of his popularity, I definitely think Nick Cave is worthy of being on this list in some capacity, and Abattoir Blues / The Lyre of Orpheus is proof of that. This is a great double album right here. Let's start with the big thing that justifies Nick Cave's presence... his songwriting. It's quite good. The 1001 albums book listed him as a gifted songwriter for a reason. While I wouldn't put him on the level of someone like Bob Dylan, there's no denying that this man has a talent for the art of songwriting. The variety in this album's songs is quite commendable. It's a double album that's effectively split into two distinct sections. The first half, Abattoir Blues, is more energetic in its music and varied in its writing, while the second half, The Lyre of Orpheus, is slower and more emotional. I think this works quite well. Comparing songs like the opener "Get Ready for Love" with the closer "O Children" paints a very interesting picture of this album and, by extension, Nick Cave as a musician. I feel like I've been talking too much about Nick Cave himself and not enough about his backing band, the Bad Seeds. This is the part where I talk about the instrumentals of the songs. They're great. The energy of the first half's songs is balanced out by the gentler tone of the second half. I like it. Back to Cave himself, his singing is definitely interesting. I think it works quite well here. The album is quite long, but I feel that its time is well-spent. Despite lasting for over 80 minutes, the album doesn't feel like a slog, which is always a good thing. Overall, this is a great album that paints a good first impression of an artist that I have a lot more of to listen to in the future. I think I'll give it a high 4/5 for now. I do want to revisit the album in the future after listening to more of his stuff though to see if this could be bumped up to a 5 in comparison.
Great album!
Probably one of the more accessible Nick Cave albums I’ve heard. Lyrics are pretentious as ever, and I still can’t figure out what he’s singing about half the time, but musically it’s pretty straightforward and pleasant. Surprisingly, despite my prejudices, and criticisms of Cave, his music and writing in general, plus the long run time, I actually enjoyed this quite a lot.
Always liked me a bit of Nick Cave, hadn’t heard this and when saw double was a bit daunted, but this is a fine record. Definitely adding to my collection.
not usually a double album guy but this one earns it
I think this is either my third or fourth Nick Cave album here, and so far I like this one the best. Not very murdery, but that’s okay. Think I’m finally starting to “get” him.
4 out of 5. First album I've listened to from this band, not a bad start.
This album really grew on me. I can't say it was anything special until Hiding All Away drew me in. The next couple songs were good but then Nature Boy and The Lyre of Orpheus really rose above. I was all in at this point. Babe, You Turn Me On and Spell were the stand-outs in the latter half of the album. It's close to a 5 but some songs were forgettable, but otherwise this album won me over.
Baller
Australischer Rock - geht ab und macht gute Laune 4/5
"Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus" is the 13th studio album by Australian rock band Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds. It is a double album with the first part '"Abattoir Blues" being a rocker and the second part "The Lyre of Orpheus" being quieter. One critic labeled it as a "bounty of gothic rock." The album was produced by Nick Launay and the band. Commercially, it hit #11 in the UK and #126 in the US. The first part of the album gets going right away with "Get Ready for Love." Loud and drving. Pounding bass and drums. Layered pyschedelic guitars. A gospel female backing choir which is pervasive throughout this first part. "Cannibal's Hymn" has a creeping bass and piano. In comes a strumming guitar and loud drums. The song builds. A wah-wah guitar. They're dinning with the cannibals. "There She Goes, My Beautiful World" is fast with a repetitive rhythmn. The gospel backing choir. A rollicking piano. By the end, the band is on full throttle. Cave wants to rule the world. The first single "Nature Boy" is the straight-forward" rocker. Catchy chorus and very melodic. The most radio-friendly song of this album for sure. The self-titled "The Lyre of Orpheus" opens with Cave singing a capella. Dark and eerie electric guitar, bass and drums. It's slower. Cave's voice is deeper. Very Tom Waits-esque. Cave tells the story of Orpheus, whose wife Eurydice dies by a snake bite, tries to convince Hades to let her live and afterwhich, she has to walk behind him playing the lyre. We get the flute in "Breathless." Yes! A catchy slow melodic ronantic song. It was the second single released. The ever-reliable handclaps open "Supernaturally." Fast pace and drums. This song could have been in the first part. It rolls on dramatically and reminded me of a traditional Celtic song. The album closes with the melancholic "O Children." A synth, acoustic guitar and the gospel female chorus is back. It was appropriate to end spiritually. Life with its greed and cruelty will always steal the innocence of youth. I think I've made my way through the majority of the Nick Cave & Bad Seeds' discography doing this challenge. There's a lot to this double album and, for the most part, was a compelling worthwhile listen. Yes, part I was full-throttle and loud. A critic's description of "gospel-punk" is appropriate. Guitar jams as Cave preaches and sings about cannibals, war, TV, the world and romance. The second part was mostly piano and acoustic guitar-driven. Melancholic and dramatic. Relationships seem to be the at the top of lyrical themes. There's a lot to absorb in this album in whole but I highly recommend it.
I've always known people to absolutely love Nick Cave and I've never found anything of his that really drew me in. This is the one. Although its pretty much two separate albums that are almost opposite of each other, they were both awesome. I was dreading listening to this one, but my mind had been changed and I will have to add this into a heavier rotation.
Bad ass album
The second disc drags but the first is a real peach.
Didn't expect, but enjoyed it.
Very pleasant record - but has few standouts throughout. Not a bad thing - it’s a cohesive album but given its length it’s not a very easy listen and it feels like it needs to be sat with to really appreciate. Looking forward to that eventually
Kind of a peak Cave record for me. The perfect balance between his post-punk days, his more atmospheric side that was about to bloom on his later records, and it also has hints of the experimentation that would take place in his music has his relationship with Warren Ellis would grow stronger. And most importantly, Cave's songwriting is in top form here. It truly has it all.
Consistently good, even if a bit long.
I had a hard time with appreciating Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, but I've finally discovered an album that I truly love. This album was beautifully heartbreaking and full of light and shadow at the same time. Brilliant!
I loved Hannibal Hymn (I do not understand the lyrics..) but the instru is great ! The other songs are nice ! This is at the edge of the line for me in terms of style (to heavy for some songs) but I admit it's great and it fully deserves to be listened and listened !
Shrek: “For your information, there’s a lot more to Nick Cave than people think.” Donkey: “Example?” Shrek: “Example? Okay, um, Nick Cave is like onions.” Donkey: “They stink?” Shrek: “Yes. No!” Donkey: “Oh, they make you cry?” Shrek: “No!” Donkey: “Oh, you leave them out in the sun, they get all brown, start sproutin’ little white hairs.” Shrek: “No! Layers. Onions have layers. Nick Cave has layers. Onions have layers. You get it? We both have layers.” Donkey: “Oh, you both have layers. Oh. You know, not everybody likes onions. Cake! Everybody loves cakes! Cakes have layers.” Shrek: “I don’t care what everyone likes. Nick Cave is not like cakes.”
Brilliant
8/10. Consistent album with creativity throughout.
First round yielded some tasty layers but was left cold by the story telling. I don’t get what he has to do with Eurydice yet. The production draws me back so maybe in that time I’ll figure out what he meant
gman lookin ass. look up nick cave he looks fucking scary as shit wth. i thought it was just lighting in some in his spotify pfp but he look freaky even when well lit. bro look like the boss from incredibles.
This is a double album that has two distinct parts. I really loved the first disc, Abattoir Blues, would give it a solid 4.5. Good rock. The second disc, Lyre if Orpheus, gets a bit more moody. Energy drops. Didn’t match the level of the first.
****
As is well known by now, I typically don’t like long albums, so I really don’t like double albums, but Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus might be an exception. Abattoir Blues is very rock and roll and Lyre is more quiet. Cannibal Hymn, The title track, let the bells ring are fantastic. He’s at his best without the industrial sounds in my opinion. Easy Money, Supeenaturally and o’children highlight Lyre 8.2/10
Theatrical but tight. Somehow both self-serious and fun. Dark but not somber. I thought this was a blast. Maybe didn't need to be a double album - but I really enjoyed most of these songs, and I especially respect the originality and distinctiveness of Cave's oddball perspective.
A weird and fun ride. Dark but somehow also jubilant. Felt like it could be a Broadway soundtrack in story, mix of styles, pacing - and well, length. Nature Boy:A Ric Flair Story. I loved this.
Why is Nick Cave so great? Why is any artist who cut their teeth in the zero hour immediately after punk so great?
I love Nick Cave and admit that I hadn't heard this album. He is one of those artists who puts out an incredible amount of work that spans decades and so sometimes I can be overwhelming. I'm impartial to his early work that's dark and creepy and verbose, but some of the later albums are so beautiful (No More Shall We Part is incredible). This one starts with a bang and kind of ended with a whimper but I will still come back to it. The more you listen, the better it gets is what I've learned about Nick Cave. Seeing him again live in May. He's a force onstage and a true artist. (Also, funny side note: Nick Cave the visual artist is also amazing. Look him up!)
The generator gave me Disintegration by The Cure yesterday and Nick Cave today, feeling very goth in the lead up to Halloween.
I first learned about this album when I was trying to find that one song from Harry Potter. I was surprised by how great the album was. 9/10
One day I was driving with my dad and he told me to put on “Red Right Hand” and I just remember think “Hey this is the Peaky Blinders theme song” and from that moment wanting to listen to more from Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds but never getting around to it. Luckily this challenge forced my hand. I wasn’t entirely convinced till “Hiding All Away” but from then on I started to fall in love and I just know that I’ve listened to the full album the first two songs are going to gell with me more as well. This is a double album and Side B has to be my favourite with standouts such as Easy Money, Carry Me and O Children. Can’t wait to listen to this again, absolutely stunning.
Great stuff. Quite uplifting for Nick Cave, and good variety.
Great double album, enjoyed a lot of this and the runtime didn't feel as long as it was. With some editing, this would have been a 5 star, but just misses out with a couple of weaker tracks
The two halves of this album make for an interesting combination, like two sides of the same coin; complementary but distinct. I prefer "The Lyre of Orpheous" half for pure musicality. Sounds a bit like Tom Waits but actually musical and enjoyable to listen to.
20/10/24 Never listened to Nick Cave before. It wasn't a bad listen.
Thoughts after disc 1: Holy fuck, this is so goddamn good. 318 days in and I *finally* get my first Nick Cave album. I've never listened to a full one and I'm so happy this is my first. Absolutely fantastic in every way. I hope the second disc keeps it up... Thoughts after disc 2: Not as good as disc 1 on first listen, but still consistently excellent. Light 4.5 for now, but potential room to grow. 4.5/5
Pretty good first exposure to Nick Cave. I will likely come back to this. Some highlights are Hiding All Away, Nature Boy, and Supernaturally.
Not sure I'd really heard any of Nick cave before, but I really like this album. A solid 3.7. I will round up to four, because I feel generous today. Lol
Entered this album not feeling it, ended up enjoying the album. “Spell”, “Nature Boy” and “Messiah Ward” were my favourites for sure.
I deeply appreciate what Nick Cave does. Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus is a unique look at gospel and blues music that takes it in a wildly different direction.
Musically very strong vibes. I won't pretend I fully understood every song, but I dug how most of them sounded.
Don’t know what i expected from Nick Cave but it wasn’t this. Really enjoying it. It’s been pointed out to me that Nick is going full David Byrne and now I can’t unhear it.
Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus is actually a double album that showcases two distinct sides of Nick Cave’s music. Abattoir Blues is raw, aggressive, and drenched in blues-rock and gospel influences, while The Lyre of Orpheus takes a more subdued, introspective route with ballads and softer arrangements. Both albums are exceptionally well produced, making this double release a great starting point for anyone looking to explore Nick Cave’s music. It’s one of his more accessible albums, that defines his style.
good double album, i liked a lot of songs, packed a lot more energy than the boatman’s call, i enjoyed it
Maybe there's something here.
I thought I would get bogged down in the length of this double album (1001 albums is at least 1100 albums if you count all the doubles, its cheating). Pleasantly surprised that it flew by and I enjoyed it. The choral backup singers do a lot of heavy lifting. Varied enough to be interesting and well arranged. "O Children" kinda makes me cry. 3.5 for the whole endeavour.
Do you like songs in where you can actually hear the bass being played? \" Abattoir Blues / The Lyre of Orpheus\" by Nick cave and the bad seeds is a great album for you. In the song \"get ready for love\" there is some parts in where its only the bass being played along with the vocals but the guitars and drums are not played for a moment. This song also has very good back up vocals which i love. I can see myself listening to this album while doing homework or studying. I would recommend this album to anyone.
I liked most of the instrumentals but I did not really like the lyrics overall I could see some people liking this album but it is not for me 4/10
I'm starting to become convinced that this site only gives you double albums when it knows that you're busy. Luckily this time it was Nick Cave, and even though I hadn't heard this album before, I knew what to expect. I like the way each disc has a completely different feel. I prefer the first disc personally, but that could just be that I wasn't in the mood for the ballads of the second. I wish I had more time to really get into this one but sometimes life gets in the way.
It was good
Yeah....this makes me realize that I have not listened to enough Nick Cave. Great stuff on here.
I really liked this album. It's not one I would've ever listened to otherwise. Soulful southern rock music. Love it.
Nick Cave - part melodrama, part comedy "John Wilmot penned his poetry Riddled with the pox Nabokov wrote on index cards, At a lectern, in his socks St. John of the Cross did his best stuff Imprisoned in a box And JohnnyThunders was half alive When he wrote Chinese Rocks" Glorious, and wild, and very alive
Ended up being pretty good
Some great songs but also a bit of filler
I did not expect to like this album as much as I did. Almost reminded me of very contemporary Broadway show tunes. Vivid and captivating lyrics as well. My only minor gripe is the second album feels weaker than the first, but still an all-around good listen
3.8
Have made several attempts to get into this one properly over the years. I've always enjoyed a lot of the songs, but usually made the mistake of trying to listen to both volumes in the same sitting, which is too much. Consequently, I'm much more familiar with Abbatoir Blues. I still feel like that's the stronger of the 2, but I might give Orpheus another listen to say for sure. I think the variation on this double album definitely makes it worth it's while, but there are a handful of songs that are a bit forgettable. Great instrumentation and production, and the lyrics are usually great, but occasionally a bit repetitive and/or too melodramatic for me.
Only got to listen to a bit more than half of it, but that was enough to know it rocks
Awesome awesome awesome lots of good tracks
Second half much better
It was pretty sweet and distinctive
Puta cantor bom
I've mostly listened to Nick Cave's earlier work, but this is also top-notch. I should listen to more of his work.
Let the Bells Ring, this album put me under a Spell. This was Easy Money.
I’ve always had a consistency issue with Cave, and it would be wrong to label this as consistent, but fuck me if this isn’t what music is made for. First five tracks on Abattoir Blues is as untouchable a run as you’ll find.
Super stuff from NC. It's too long, and is basically one five star album and one three star one, let's get that out the way. But I guess Cave has earned the right to put out a totally needless double album. Anyway, there are many, many good songs on here, and the overall tenor of the record is one of supreme power but also vulnerability, and I like that a lot.
There's something very special about this album and I can't say exactly what it is. Whether it's the extremely sentimental sound or the lyrics with deep themes... I don't know. But I really liked this one a lot. Fun Fact: I haven't seen Harry Potter in almost 10 years, and when I read that the closing track plays in one of the films I was like "Ah shit, I'm going to have to watch Harry Potter again" hahaha
Very creative and addicting, every song feels like a new adventure.
Another fun Nick Cave album. This one sounded more accessible than some of the previous I’ve heard. Some amazing songs and a lot of meh Rating: 3.9
Adorei esse álbum meio conceitual com a primeira parte focado em uma coisa mais rock/soul e a segunda numa coisa mais folk/indie.
This is ultimate big brother cool music. Nick Cave just has this way of spinning the darkest yarns. need to revisit. when I am not traveling.
dad i will end you for that rating you gave Blue
Good listen. Pretty solid throughout
I wasn't sure if I was going to like this or not. But this was really great to listen to. Several key tracks but obviously, 'O Children' is an amazing song. "We're happy, Ma, we're having fun - And the train ain't even left the station - And have you left a seat for me? - Is that such a stretch of the imagination? - I'm hanging in there, don't you see? - In this process of elimination." BEAUTIFUL! BEAUTIFUL I SAY!
Nice
Pretty good probs a 3.8 but I’ll round up
first Nick Cave I heard I liked. Good stuff
When I saw another Nick Cave album, my first thought was "Not again!" But then I listened to the album. And it's pretty good this time. The entirety of Disc 1 is phenomenal, with tracks such as Get Ready For Love, Hiding All Away, There She Goes My Beautiful World, Nature Boy, Abbatoir Blues, and Fable Of The Brown Ape. While Disc 2 slows things down considerably, there are still some very strong tracks here too i.e. The Lyre Of Orpheus, Supernaturally, Spell, Carry Me and of course - O Children. A great album really. Caught me off guard Mr. Cave.
Another awesome album I’d never listened to! Didn’t get into it much the first time round but after a couple of listens I was hooked! I loved the Lyre of Orpheus more than the abattoir blues but both were awesome. I’d give this a 3.5, but I’m going to round it up, because I love the second album so much!
hesitant to give it a 5 because its long and its a double album but I can definitly see how this will become a favorite over time
Love!!!
This is going to take a few more listens before I finalize my views on it. I'm going with 4 for now, but that could go up or down a bit.
This is amazing - chock full of ideas and moods. Violent and noisy, introspective and subdued, explosive and snarling. And hey, here's that song Harry and Hermione had that dance to.
I find this album especially interesting purely because it's 2 full length albums back to back. On their own I think they'd still be good, but putting them into one package and juxtaposing the punchy energetic first half with the slower more personal 2nd half creates something unique. I really like the use of layered vocals, especially on disc 2. It creates this sort of floaty feeling that fits so well with the mostly unplugged feel of the second half. Favorites were "There She Goes, My Beautiful World", Abattoir Blues, Easy Money, Supernaturally, and O Children
No private session used for Spotify. I have my own best of Nick Cave/Grinderman playlist. While listening to this album I added one to it, I need to go back and give this another listen. Liked the opening intensity.
Double albums should be rated lower. I really don't have an hour and a half a day to listen to album, even if it's Nick Cave. 01) Get Ready For Love - 8,0 02) Cannibal's Hymn - 7,0 03) Hiding All Away - 7,0 04) Messiah Ward - 7,5 05) There She Goes, My Beautiful World - 9,5 06) Nature Boy - 9,0 07) Abattoir Blues - 7,0 08) Let the Bells Ring - 7,0 09) Fable of the Brown Ape - 7,5 10) The Lyre of Orpheus - 7,0 11) Breathless - 8,5 12) Babe, You Turn Me On - 7,5 13) Easy Money - 7,5 14) Supernaturally - 7,5 15) Spell - 7,0 16) Carry Me - 7,0 17) O Children - 8,5 TOTAL: 7,65 (77/100) Current ranking: 108/235 I was at a Nick Cave concert a couple of years ago, he played three songs from this album. It was a good performance even though I'm not really a fan of his. It's the same with this album, a really good album, but that doesn't mean I'm going to listen to it again. "There She Goes..." is going on my playlist. "Nature Boy", "Breathless", "O Children" and "Get Ready For Love" are also excellent.
Relly enjoyed this. I read to approach it as 2 different albums released at the same time so that's what I tried to do and while both halfs were great by themselves they also worked well together. Was a bit daunted by the length (that's what she said) but it wasn't bad at all
Nick Cave to me has always been one of those guys that even though I haven’t really ever listened to him I just know that it’s awesome and this album was no different than those thoughts the composition and background vocals and good album all from front to back.
Such a great voice, I did find some tracks a bit dull. Not overly my thing.
Enjoyed this a lot. Nick Cave has that Springsteen like baritone voice, but with much more interesting songwriting IMO. Liked the first half of this more than the second, but overall really liked everything.
Very good stuff
First thing I said when I saw this album is, “How many Nick Cave albums do we really need?”. Then it slowly pulled me in on this album. Great instrumentals and Nick’s lyrical style cracks me up. Going to 4 stars cause after this one and Murder Ballads I feel like Nick and his band need some more notoriety and recognition.
Alright, I'm already familiar with Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds as an influential goth rock act, having heard select songs before including his 2013 album "Push the Sky Away". I will say here, this is technically a double album, but arranged into two different sounding albums. Abbatoir Blues contains more abrasive, rocking tunes, while The Lyre of Orpheus contains more chorus-driven ballads with some potent hooks. That's where I would recommend breaking your listening time into two different sessions, one for each disc. The other hurdle with this project is that the music better resonates if you're already familiar with Nick Cave's songwriting. How he touches upon themes of death, gothic tragedy, relationships, and religious imagery is established by earlier material. It doesn't work as effectively if say you're on this site getting daily randomly generated albums, this comes up and you hadn't heard of Nick Cave before. If you have the time, I recommend listening to a greatest hits compilation or playlist before approaching these two albums. For those already familiar with Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, yeah these are two great albums. I admittedly got a bit more mileage out of the melodic nature of The Lyre of Orpheus, but both are worth your time.
I really liked this album but it was a little long and saggy towards the middle.
Старичок в этот раз душевно вошёл в мою грешную жизнь. Затронул струнки души. Только блять зачем двойной альбом полуторачасовой?
I’m a sucker for adaptations of the Orpheus & Eurydice myth, and while this isn’t the clearest adaptation beyond the title, it’s still littered with references to the ultimate musician’s tragedy. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds have been remarkably consistent in quality over about 40 years of recording, even if they’ve been extremely inconsistent in style. Garage rock, polished art rock, ambient/minimalism, they do it all. But this style of gothic rock is my favorite, most similar to their 1988 Tender Prey, probably my second favorite of their albums. It’s a double album but it doesn’t feel bloated. There’s enough diversity in sound to keep me entertained throughout but not so much that it feels disjointed. I do think this could have been released as two separate albums, but there’s enough similarity (blues vs. tragedy) that I think it’s all fitting together.
Passionately punchy
i too got the abattoir blues
Maybe I am nick cave and bad seeds pilled What am i becoming Disc 2 way better Carry me, spell, o children good
Nick Cave is a strange one. On casual listening some of his stuff comes across as ludicrous but it definitely repays further listening. I bet he is great live. I had tickets but I had Covid so missed out. Definitely should have been two separate releases though
Too long
Glad I gave this a second listen, some of it hit a lot better after the first go. Might be an acquired taste, but one that almost makes it for me.
Intriguing stuff. I've never given him much of a shot but will re-listen!
Pretty good. Unified albums, memorable music memorable lyrics. At times he leans into the whole goth thing a bit much (especially for his age!?) but say what you will about the tenets of goth, at least its an aesthetic. The brown apes pretty wild as is the title track of the second.
i've always heard about nick cave and the bad seeds but never actually listened to them. i liked it!
I knew about half this album beforehand. Strong 4. Some real beauties on here but too long. I didn't know 'O Children' was so dang popular! Must be in a film soundtrack? ..Oh right, it was in that Harry Potter at the end where they dance.
whoo that choir. super cohesive and overall gorgeous. his singing style is captivating. there’s a grecian air to it, mediterranean in a way. also midsummer night’s dream vibes. d&d fae wild vibes! o children will always be one of my favorite songs of all time. (thank you harry potter and the deathly hallows)
I hadn't really heard any Nick Cave since the 1990s. This was a treat. It runs long; but the music stays engaging. Would do again.
Lots of interesting stuff on this one, and I've always enjoyed that noir sort of thing Nick Cave has going on. As with a lot of double albums though, I think it could have been pared down a lot
Obligatory "too long", but still really damn cool and unique. Interesting guitar parts and dense instrumentation. Nich Cave's vocals can get old, but he is one of a kind and I was with him for most of this marathon.
Nick Cave has been one of my fave artists for a long time. Dude can just write amazing songs, and has done that since The Birthday Party. This double album is middle of the pack for me, but it's still so damn consistent. Almost half of the songs are highlights and the rest is pretty good as well. Love the gospel style he presents here.
Get Ready for Love 3.8 Cannibal's Hymn 4 Hiding All Away 4.2 Messiah Ward 4 There She Goes, My Beautiful World 4 Nature Boy 3.9 Abattoir Blues 4 Let the Bells Ring 4.3 Fable of the Brown Ape 3.6 The Lyre of Orpheus 4.4 Breathless 3.8 Babe, You Turn Me On 3.8 Easy Money 4.1 Supernaturally 3.7 Spell 3.9 Carry Me 3.8 O Children 4 Score: 3.958823529
Part 2 was better than one. The lyre of Orpheus, easy money, and carry me win.
Nick Cave is prodigious with his bad seeds
First disc is faster paced, second is slower. Good!
Preferred the second album over the first. Favourite song was easy money.
I think this is my favorite Nick Cave album. They do blues/gospel really well...I'm surprised! I also learned they're from Australia. How did I miss that all these years?! Definitely a bit long, but a nice listen.
Nick Cave has always been a bit of hit or miss with me. Thankfully this album was mostly a hit with me. 4.
First listen to this album. Pretty awesome
I adore this album. It was my gateway to Nick Cave so will always hold a special place in my heart. The music is rattling rock n roll, bouncing bluesy boogies, wailing hysterical preaching, and tender heartfelt cascades of beauty all wrapped up in a big beautiful bow.
For me, personally, I'd probably give this a 3.5, as far as my enjoyment and desire to listen to it, again. However, I recognize the brilliance in the songwriting and composition, and I now understand why so many people love Nick Cave. Therefore, I bumped it up to a 4. I thought the second disc was better than the first, moodier, a bit darker, but also more concise and distilled, in a good way. I definitely want to check out more Cave, now!
Every time I listen to Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds I imagine them as a band of demon goats and it’s perfection.
nature boy i o children idalje goated
Nakon 9 uzastopnih slusanja danas album je cist solidan. Orpheus banger, a O Children je tak dobra da mi se nakon nje nista vise ne slusa jer kak nastavis na tu pjesmu.
8.5/10 I was dreading this one and put it off all day. Expected doom, gloom, self regarding Totally wrong, this was excellent. Surprisingly mainstream rock sound with lots of interesting twists to make it alternative, bluesy, folk, even gospel Thought Cave might be humourless, but there were definite flashes of funny on here Rocky, propulsive first half, more mellow and folky second Absolutely loved the drums on both sides Best: Fable of the Brown Ape
I was worried I was going to hate this album and offend Mitsy with a bad review, fortunately it’s pretty fucking awesome on the first listen. Hiding all the way the standout track in my opinion
Rating: 8.5/10 Great album overall. The first half is particularly strong, plenty of gorgeous instrumental melodies and passionate singing by Nick Cave. I love how Nick Cave changes his vocal delivery to match the mood of each song. There were also many nuances instrumentally which will make for repeated listens. The second half is a dip in quality; still very good but not as interesting instrumentally or vocally. Still at least three fantastic songs on Disc 2, if this was one album it could have been 5 stars easily. Favorite songs: Get Ready for Love, Cannibal's Hymn, Hiding All Away, Messiah Ward, Beautiful World, Nature Boy, Abattoir Blues, Easy Money, Supernaturally, O Children. Worst song: Fable of the Brown Ape.
It started kinda jarring, but I got into it. Good mix of styles and rhythms.
This is much better than the last Nick Cave record that came up. I actually like this a lot. Rocking, catchy and the vocals are a little theatric but they fit the so gs well. Very into this.
I like this album a lot. I've always really liked Nick Cave in general and had never listened to this album all the way through. I like how it's almost two albums smashed together - the first half is more in your face and the second is a little softer and more ballad-ish. I think it was a good idea to release it as one long album instead of two short ones - it flows really well. I would rate this somewhere between 4 and 5, but didn't like it quite enough to give it a 5 so 4/5 it is.
This sounds like a,musical theater score. I like it. Favorite track is cannibal hymn
Nick Cave has become a favorite of mine over the course of this project and this album is no exception. It is a gospel/gothic blues hybrid featuring a very full sound. Occasionally the lyrics were a miss and seemed to be there for the rhyme only, but despite that, this sprawling album holds together quite well.
4.25
Good. Probably needs multiple listens to get full impact of lyrics.
Nick Cave albums don't generally "grab" me the way a lot of good albums do, but I will say that this one grew on me as it went. Lots of variation in the musical approach, but they do a good job of keeping it interesting 4/5
Обещанный Wild God, который уже можно послушать и вознестись. Первая половина кажется мне сильнее второй. O Children - великая песня, трактовку которой Александра Горбачева я несу с собой уже несколько лет. Спасибо. Лучшая песня - O Children.
If this is “bad” Nick Cave, I’m beyond excited to hear his other albums. I might cheat and go ahead and listen to them.
Really enjoyed this album. Lots of variety in styles.
"Abattoir Blues / The Lyre of Orpheus" by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds strikes a 4-star balance between raw energy and reflective beauty. Picture "Abattoir Blues" as a wild night out, deserving a 5-star rating for its unbridled excitement, while "The Lyre of Orpheus" is the 3-star contemplative next morning, still shimmering with gems like "O Children."This double album showcases Cave's versatility—part raucous party, part introspective retreat. It's like dining on a meal that starts with a spicy appetizer and ends with a soothing dessert. Not every bite is unforgettable, but the overall experience? Definitely worth savoring. Four stars for a musical journey that caters to both sides of the soul.
I’d never heard anything by Nick Cave before this. I’m not totally sure what I think about the album - I don’t completely love it, but I think I like it a lot. I found myself buying in to it more as it went on, and I can see myself liking it more with repeated listens. It has a unique and interesting sound that I appreciate. Favorite tracks: Supernaturally, Easy Money, O Children 3.5 rounded up
Enjoyed 2 album approach and learning more about band. Cannibals Hymn, There She Goes My Beautiful World and Breathless all stood out for me.
favourite: cannibal's hymn, there she goes my beautiful world, the lyre of orpheus least favourite: messaiah ward really cool album mayb 7-8/10
A great mixture of gospel, punk, and folk elements, along with Nick Cave's ever so distinct and almost gothic delivery on some of these tracks cultivates into a package that feels very versatile and engaging throughout even with its daunting near one and a half hour runtime. I did find it to be a little front loaded as a lot of the major highlights appear on the first disc, though the track O Children is a fantastic (if rather dark) way to close out the record.
Really 4.5 for record 1 and 3 for record 2. First one is a banger and such fun to listen to. Second not so much.
Really interesting. Double album didn't have a cohesive sound between the two.
This is really close to a 5 for me. Probably has one or two too many average songs, but even they are interesting and under the right circumstances I'd like hearing them. Nick cave really should be more well known.
Never heard of this guy and really enjoyed the album. Unique and interesting.
I recall glancing off this when it came out, too weird, but turns out in just the strange direction I went. Still weird esp in the middle, but also excellent.
I thought this kicked ass. Never done much of a deep dive into Nick Cave, but I really enjoyed this album. I hear Joy Division here and southern rock/gospel. Kick ass lyrics, various noise, and groovy rhythms.
This album is simultaneously a weighted blanket and the anxiety that causes me to wear that blanket. The production is absolutely masterful, songwriting and arrangements choreographed beautifully, but good god is it a heavy record to soak in. Consult your doctor before consuming this one.
Nick Cave is tailor made for my tastes: gothic lyricism, complicated composition, but always enjoyable either as a head-banger hymnal or an intimate therapy session. This album has both, cleanly split between their own separate discs. It's music for lapsed Catholics, and I am one of those lapsed Catholics in the target audience. At the same time, I feel like this is not the best album Nick Cave ever made. Sometime you hear an album you love, and you know you'll love the band overall, but even though you love the album, you know there's something better in the back catalogue, you just need to find it. Oddly, I've seen some people disagree, claiming this is his peak, but I doubt that. While both albums are very good – and let's be honest, they are two independent albums, stand-alone artistic statements – The Lyre of Orpheus feels a bit weaker, a bit too tight to be confessional but too loose to be honest. I also think Abattoir Blues wobbles with the last couple tracks. But don't get me wrong, I'm still impressed with this album. It's not life-changing to me personally, if only because I'm past the age where it would've been life-changing, but I am really really interested in exploring more Nick Cave coming up. I won't be shocked if this grows on me to the point where it becomes one of my favorites by the end of this challenge. Still, at the moment, it has just a smidge too many shortcomings for me to say it's flawless. Great new find, light 4.5.
Kann man sich anhören
Only issue is that it is a double album. That makes it a solid 4. There is a 5 star album in there if it was pared down to a single album.
I haven't listened to much of any Nick Cave and I wasn't too crazy about this album in the first few tracks, but it grew in me as it went on.
Not my favorite Nick Cave. "Abbatoir Blues" is little too classic-rock, not the murder-ballad darkness I know and love. But the lyrics are fun and inventive. "The Lyre of Orpheus" is a bit tooo much the Nick Cave I know, but is a lot of fun. So altogether it gets 4 stars.
4.5 I reckon
Been sitting on this album for a week now, to get time to give it a proper listen it deserves. This is the best Nick Cave album Iv heard, the first half is perfection 5 stars, slows down a lot in the second half but it’s beautiful, to rate that part separately I’d give it 4 stars, taking the album as a hole it’s just too long in my personal opinion for Full marks, so a very high 4 stars and a new favourite Nick Cave album for me, though more likely to listen to the first half more than the second in the future.
One of the best rock albums I’ve heard from this list. Unfortunately, when I tried to replay it, the album had disappeared from every single streaming service. Shouldn’t have looked back ig :/
Like Paul, I’ve been strangely ambivalent about Nick Cave. I’ve heard a few songs, I liked and bought No More Shall We Part on a whim. I loved that, but then never followed up the initial interest. But the gothic thing that put me off is starting to appeal more nowadays - a bit like the Leonard Cohen album we did. This is very strong. Get Ready For love is a twisted 20th century boy. Cannibal’s hymn continues to set the unhinged mood, but Hiding all Away is where it switches gears. Great lyrics, playing up his creepy persona, and the - ‘There is a war comin’ climax is great. Nature Boy shows off the Bad Seeds as a great ramshackle band, like the Stones in black nail polish, but with the kind of dark lyrics Jagger hasn’t written since Undercover of The Night. The chord progression is a bit too close to Come Up And See Me, as Paul says, but it still works. Abattoir piles on the manic energy, with Drake as a spooky ringmaster but then Let Them Bells Ring backs things off to a simmer (The whole album is brilliantly sequences, essential on a double), just great doomy pop. The Fable of the Brown Ape makes sure the weirdness quotient remains high, strong Tom Waits, Mule Variations vibes. And that’s just the first side. It’s my favourite, but not by much. The surprisingly sweet and catchy Breathless, Babe you turn me on and the superb Supernaturally (Neil Diamond gone rogue?) it ends with O Children a song so good it survives that cringe-worthy Harry Potter scene. funereal, stately. A hair under five, and a great find.
Abattoir Blues / The Lyre of Orpheus I’ve never listened to this before. I actually listened to the one after this, Dig Lazarus Dig a fair bit when it came out, and I like The Boatman’s Call, mainly on the basis of Into My Arms, which I love. I also really got into the soundtracks Nick Cave did with Warren Ellis, mainly The Proposition and The Assassination of Jesse James. The Wind River soundtrack too. And Red Right Hand of course. Beyond that I’ve not really delved into anything to much else. I do like, or at the very least find his stuff interesting. Even if it’s not ‘enjoyable’ it has a singularity and sense of idiosyncratic flair I really appreciate. It wasn’t until after the first listen that I learned that it is two separate albums rather than a standard double album. They do feel like two different records so it kind of makes sense to review them separately. Abattoir Blues The overall sound is cool, kind of big and spacey and rocking and loud, but without being too massive or bombastic or distant. The band do have a real litheness, even on the relatively ‘straight ahead’ rock songs they create a real groove. The bass and drums are great in that regard - not necessarily thorough musical virtuosity but through feel. The piano playing and backing vocals also stood out particularly. Hiding All Away is great - kind of broken rhythm with a nagging groove. Pretty funny lyrics. There She Goes, My Beautiful World - they play this a lot on 6 Music, it’s a great tune. Nature Boy is also excellent. I liked the sense of drama (and humour) and raucousness, and I like the wryness of his voice and manner, at turns Morrison, Dylan and Jagger-esque. He also has that great knack for really interesting little melodies and hooks. Lyre of Orpheus Love love the title song Breathless - lovely melody, give this to a safe MOR band and in the pre download days I can see it being a massive hit. Someone like the Corrs or Sixpence None the Richer. But the edge he has just tips it into really interesting territory that tension elevates it beyond just a nice melody I like the numerous mentions of and allusions to birds, and the tension between melancholy and joy, lyrically and melodically on this one. Both albums are a 4 for me, so a 4 overall. Both close to 5 but I can’t quite work out whether I’d prefer them as two distinct albums or as the double package. I think they work together but I would probably go back to them as two separate albums. Maybe a slight preference for Lyre of Orpheus but they are both great. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Pretty good 7/10
Fantastic full sounding voice throughout the entire project. The music is very solid and some songs it's so overwhelming in a good way that envelopes the track. There are a couple of skippable tracks which is to be expected in an album that's this long. A little shorter and streamlined and this would've been ever better for me. 8/10
Cinematic Americana sorta vibes
OK, while I was aware of Nick Cave I had not heard any of his work. I don't know if this is representative, but I found it to be something I should have found on my radar when it was released. This recording is actually two in one. Part one has more of a rock, alternative, new age feel. Part two is softer but still with an edge.
Awesome album. Loved the many layers of instruments and his dark voice. I'll have to check out some more of his albums. Didn't quite make it up to 5 stars for me but perhaps more listens will bring it up
hlustaði lítið á þessa þegar hún kom út. leiður á shave og aðdáendum hans. reyndist rembingur, 4,5.
What a beauty of a double album. Nick Cave is so good at setting ambiance and telling story. 4 stars
Big sound / great lyrics with a sense of danger in his voice. Always loved nick cave and the aptly named Bad Seeds
Loved this. I have only heard a few songs here and there and always found the interesting. I’m sure there are better words than haunting and thought provoking, creative and deep but right now that is what I have to describe how much I enjoyed this album.
I enjoyed this. Lots of different types songs. I liked the singers low raspy voice. Super long album tho. Wish I had spent more time listening to the lyrics.
Surprised, i thought it was pretty good
\\m// \\m//
Honestly a very good album. No song really sticks out to me after having listened to it, but easy listening and a good sound
Yes
A whopper of a double album. In my mind Nick Cave can really do no wrong. This album really capitalized on the promise of his whole catalogue up to this point. I personally prefer Abattoir Blues to Lyre of Orpheus, even though the songs “Breathless” and “Easy Money” are among the best on the album. Overall the whole thing is great and I’m proud to say that both of these records are in regular rotation at our house.
This was quite good.
I loved the front half of this album a lot, back me a bit but there’s still a lot of greatness here
Some great songs, there she goes, my beautiful world, breathless, supernaturally and o children. Clearly prefer The Lyre of Orpheus than Abattoir blues which probably drops the rate from 5 to 4 stars
Will go back and listen again
Sneaky 4 stars. Wasn’t into it the first time around, but second time around it was a solid listen through.
Dark and frightening but fantastic
Didn't like this so much at first but by the end I was so caught up in it. Kind of reminds of of Jason Molina and Songs: Ohio but more rock and less folk. Loved it.
aDD THIS TO ALBUMS iu SHOULD HAVE LISTENED WHEN THEY CAME OUT. a REALLY GOOD PERFORMANCE. i CAN HEAAR TALKING HEADS HERE AND THE A GREAT MOOD.
Mélange sympa de blues, gospel, un album qui oscille entre tristesse et joie, avec la voix de Nick Cave empruntée aux new wave.
Well I enjoyed this very much indeed! What a rich wonderful sound he can create. I knew a few of these but was certainly pleased to hear the whole thing together. What an artist
There She Goes, My Beautiful World Nature Boy Let the Bells Ring Breathless Supernaturally O Children
Not my favorite by Nick Cave, but well done. Solid composure and flow throughout the album.
Dramatic. Hard-hitting. Gospel-soaked, yet utterly merciless. Avoids falling under one genre; the closest would be something like "blues gospel metal" or, more vaguely, alt-rock. Lots of minor keys, dorian modes, and V-i / i-IV chord changes. The drumming is darn fantastic, full of anger and rocking energy. The lead vocal is throaty, manly, and distinctive. The main drawback is that it goes on far too long, and the ideas in many tracks are sometimes very similar to one another. Sure, each individual song is a blast, but as an album it's too exhausting to give 5 stars. The album's bookends are the clear highlights. Fave tracks: Get Ready For Love, Cannibal's Hymn, Babe You Turn Me On, O Children
supernaturally lo mejor
pretty good overall! my favourite was the lyre of orpheus :) Get Ready for Love: 3.5 Cannibal's Hymn: 5 Hiding All Away: 4.5 Messiah Ward: 3 There She Goes, My Beautiful World: 4 Nature Boy: 3.5 Abattoir Blues: 5 Let the Bells Ring: 3 Fable of the Brown Ape: 1 The Lyre of Orpheus: 5 Breathless: 5 Babe, You Turn Me On: 3 Easy Money: 2 Supernaturally: 4 Spell: 2 Carry Me: 4 O Children: 4.5
Even better than I remembered. The title points the way -- Nick Cave is a great lyricist. This record should be listened to when you can heard the words, not at work.
Started off quite prepared to give this a 3 as though I like Nick Cave's voice and vibe I didn't think it was one I'd listen to again. But there are some stand out tracks, There She Goes, Lyre of Orpheus, probably more. Would listen again
I love the brooding, bluesy gospel sound of the first disc. It's Nick Cave so, of course, the lyrics are excellent. I hadn't listened to it as an album before, although I knew and liked some of the tracks already. I think it would have worked better for me as 2 separate albums, rather than a double album. The first album probably would have earned 5 stars from me. I think I may have appreciated the second album more as a standalone as well, rather than listening to it at the end of a long album.
7.5/10 Highlights: O Children Hiding All Away Nature Boy The Lyre of Orpheus Easy Money
Aware of Nick Cave but hadn't heard him before (apparently this album isn't representative). Really good musically, but grow bored with his verse after a while. Seems like he's one of those legends that primarily exists in his well-worn path. For a double album, pretty solid. 3.8
The song Lyre of Orpheus was my favorite - love.
I wouldn’t say I had to hear this before I died, but still a good listen.
Wilder start, hatte von Nick cave irgendwie anderes erwartet. Postpunk meets rock? Durchgehend gute Musik, Abwechslungreich, Mal schneller, Mal Ballade, Mal silly. Immer im guten Wechsel.
"Abbatoir Blues" is one of my favourite Bad Seeds songs of all time. "There She Goes, My Beautiful World" is great. "The Lyre of Orpheus", "Babe, You Turn Me On" and "O Children" are good tracks. This double album is well done, but also such a somber, spare affair. I enjoy and appreciate the album when I take the time to listen, but I have to square myself up for the emotional drag that Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds bring to the proceedings. Bleak stuff and certainly an acquired taste. 3.6 stars rounded up.
Sick tunes tbh
Hey ja, was sölli sege. War gut, eher so biz wasi sust amigs au so lose aber so us de Socke grisse dasis ständig würd lose hets mich halt au nid. War aber doch solid also 4/5.
4/5
I had no idea what to expect, but this was amazing! Melancholy stylistically all over the place with some really standout tracks. Pleasantly surprised! “Let the Bells Ring” and “Supernaturally” in particular are amazing.
My first experience of Nick Cave's music and I intend to listen to many more of his albums. With the first track initially I was concerned the album might be a bit too religious for me to enjoy but this was not tue case. Some great songs, my favourites being: 'Cannibal's Hymn' 'Hiding All Away' 'Let the Bells Ring' 'The Lyre of Orpheus' 'Easy Money' and of course the beautiful 'O Children'. On first listen some of the tracks felt like they went on a bit to long/were a bit filler. This wasn't as bad on my second listen and I really enjoyed the entire album with the same standout tracks. 4/5 (High 7/10)
Pretty good. Not what I was expecting
The name and cover are so unbelievably pretentious. The concept could be cool but wow....and turns out I like it more than I thought I would, both sides. Well played, Nick Cave.
I was not looking forward to a double album by Nick Cave this morning, but the time flew and it was over before I knew it. The first part was great, but I also enjoyed the second part equally, even though it was a bit more mellow and derivative. I think this is the definition of a four star album using my scoring methods. I liked it, but I felt it needed at least one relisten, and it was definitely not perfect.
Another album that I could see myself absolutely loving when I was younger. But for now, it just doesn’t grab me. Good album though.
For o children pretty much
Very theatrical, but I liked it.
There are a lot of catchy tunes on this one
Lots of great songs, blusey and artsy and devastating and fun
From opening to close this album changes, the start is frantic and faster but by the end O children whisks you off the planet and into another time, I'm a fan of how this sounds
This is a Nick Cave album I have not listened to before. A little different in tone than the others I have heard, but still good. At times I love his stuff, and other times it is too much. Next time this album come up, I may not like it as much. They consistently put out good work though.
God bless rock and roll
Really like the album on the first couple listens. This is my first nick cave record so I was completely unaware about his sound. Ive read he changes it up with each record, so this album shouldn’t be an indicator of his whole discography. But what it does indicate is his raw, raspy, heavy vocals which elevate some great writing. The songs are weird and abstract and invoke religious imagery. There are gospel influences all over the record with choirs supporting a lot of the songs here. The instrumentation is lush and full. I love the pianos and guitar on this. Some of my fave tracks as of now - get ready for love, there she goes…, nature boy, the lyre of Orpheus, breathless. I need some more time to digest it as it’s a double album, almost 90 mins long. But I reckon it’ll only grow on me more with repeated listens. It’s a light 4.
Coming through The Birthday Party front door into my Nick Cave fandom, I've always appreciated the more abrasive and uptempo songs from Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds. The opener Abattoir Blues delivers in this regard as do a few other tracks on this double album. To be fair, there are tracks that are more subdued and introspective which are also good. Solid.
heard
First disc okay but mostly good for background music. I liked the second disc better, my favourite of those songs were The Lyre of Orpheus and O Children.
3.6
Really enjoyed
First half of album = meh Second half of album = excellente
Really enjoyed the first half of this album, but the second half dragged a lot. There’s a chance I could really love this, but it’s so long and it’s not an easy listen - it takes a lot of energy.
Very cool. I Iike the sound of this newer blusey band 4
Beautifully produced album. First song hits hard af
This is dense yet beautiful. I loved the first half especially when it gets overwhelming. So rich and intense. 4.5
Nick Cave reflects on the dichotomies of man with this double album, and while it has some duds in the tracklist, he very much gets his ideas across
The two disc's certainly have there own feel to them. The gospel backing vocals elavate many tracks. A few "just okay" songs surrounded by a lot of songs that deserve repeat listening. Not perfect, but a lot of fun/ emotion from start to finish. My personal highlights are "hiding all away", "there she goes, my beautiful world" and "easy money".
Sonzao tri, característico o vocal, só não ganha cinco porque algumas destoam
very good, hidden gem, would rate around a 4.5 if able.
Nick Cave, good ennit
First half is nice but beggining of second disc is so sluggish. Unfortunately it stays like this for big part of second disc. Barely 4/5
Very groovy, definitely adding some songs to my playlist 4/5
A lot of fun
Interesting
good variance
One of my absolute favorite songwriters! I don't know how many times I've spun this album, I love it. It shows all the great things about Nick and his band and I have to give a shout out for the band, because they're all insanely talented. Even though this album shows more of the rocky/frenzy side of the band, there's also some great moments of beauty. 8,5 out of 10
a pretty cool album. nick cave is a name i've heard for a while and never explored, so my intrigue was high. you can definitely see that this album was really ahead of its time in terms of production and sound. i liked the arrangements more than i cared for the lyrics, which at times felt clunky to me. but overall, i felt this was a good listen.
Cool bluesy vibes
3.5/5
Pretty good
Good, nice blend of blues and rock, soulful voice. Some songs veer off into self indulgence and atonal experimentation that doesn't work for me.
really enjoyed this a lot. Very upbeat and cool.
Totally dig it. See myself playing this again soon
Cool writing, tight sounds.
I hadn’t really listened to a nick cave full album before. But had heard some stuff Pretty depressing at times but not in a terrible way. Smashing pumpkins or Lou reed managed to pull it off. And so does NC and the BS here
All Ballads is usually a pretty big ask for me, but man *Murder Ballads* really unlocked these guys for me, I enjoyed this
Not the easiest nick cave album but a very enjoyable one has aspects of earlier albums all rolled onto 2 discs. Some Birthday Party tunes. Takes a lot of the best elements of nicks writing. A grower of a piece of work.
Right when I was ready to skip the whole album, Breathless captivated me. With Babe you turn me on, I was sold. Too long for me, and I like the second half more than the first. But can't deny Nick Cave talent.
I gotta give it to Nice Cave and his Bad Seeds. This was pretty good.
I actually appreciated what was going on here. Colour me surprised
Easy money en o.children zijn zo vet
Quite nice, a bit slow. O children was a nice ending to the album.
Dug this one. It's like bluesy Tom Waits. The backing singers really made it for me. Really solid compositions and arrangements.
Love the energetic first half of this album a lot Second half is also very good Nick Cave is one of my personal favourite songwriters and this album is a great example of that Favourite tracks: Get Ready For Love, Cannibal’s Hymn, There She Goes…, Nature Boy, Abattoir Blues, Breathless, O Children
Gotta be honest. The Lyre of Orpheus > Abattoir Blues
