Reviews (page 9 of 13)
Alright album. I think I liked 3 or 4 of the 9 songs on here, but overall it was just okay. The Passenger is a classic, but as a song it’s fine. I think the vocals were the standout on this album and what I remember the most. Some of the backing was pretty good.
Cool
i honestly had no idea that david bowie produced the first three iggy pop albums and also was like the recording engineer for them? kinda random as all fuck
More varied musically than expected
couple of bangers but the rest is a bit meh
The Passenger is my fav in here. Would have been a fun person to see live in concert.
Feel like I’m listening to super hans. Not bad but not my cup of tea
An exceptionally Bowie flavored experience. I'd hesitate to call this punk, as it has much more of a rock feel to it. Not bad, but I'd rather just listen to a Bowie album.
First, what a terrible album cover. It looks like an awkward yearbook photo. Lust for life goes on way too long. Shave off two minutes and it’s a great song. Sweet Sixteen was a first time listen for me and it’s pretty damn good. The Passenger is also one of the top songs on this album. The rest is pretty meh. Nothing stands out. 3
Kul variant
🧘🏻♀️💃🕺
i've gotten so much punk on this list that this album whilst having great quality for the genre fills a little stale, but it be vibing at times. plus a bowie album always gets points from me
Usually not the style of music I enjoy, but I don't mind this one. The Passenger is such a classic song and brings this album to life, showcasing his brilliance. The punk and rock elements are quite fun and sometimes a bit random, but nothing I wouldn't expect from him. Not bad.
It's not as bad as I was expecting. It isn't great, but its listenable.
Iggy pop
A very solid 3 star album. Nothing exceptional. Nothing awful. A good listen but not clambering for more.
Not really my taste but appreciate it still. I could do a few songs, just didn’t need to listen to the whole album straight through
Fav: lust for Life, passenger least fav: sixteen
Lust for life is good but too long. Sixteen is okay but too creepy. Some Weird Sin is meh. Then… The Passenger is amazing. One of my favourite songs ever. Tonight is meh, Success is pretty good, Turn Blue is pretty good. Neighborhood Threat is great! Fall In Love With Me is good too. 3.5
Guess the decade!! Another 70s album... Ok, I do know track 1 and loved it in trainspotting ☺️ At one point you can't help but wonder if they all forgot the lyrics. No worry, they'll remember them before the song's end. Track 2. Sweet? Nothing sweet about the sound here. Not for me. Track 3. More 70s music. So edgy! 🥱 Track 4. A hard classic. Track 6: I appreciate everyone trying their bestest. Track 7: ah, a nice, relatable intro at last! Sweet :) Solid song if you give it time. Contrary to track 8, which is anything but sweet. 9... We've all been there I suppose? 😬
I thought he was British. Still up there with some of Lou reeds stuff tho
The opening kick drum alone is iconic, and “The Passenger” is one of those songs that never really wears out its welcome. The rest of the record, though, lives in a looser, rougher space — swaggering, messy, sometimes brilliant, sometimes just coasting on attitude. I like it, but I can’t quite bring myself to love it. It’s an album I respect more than I reach for.
A product of its time. The 70’s were interesting to say the least. You can hear Bowie oozing from every orifice of this record Only a couple songs I saved from this. I expected it to be a lot rougher around the edges production wise from an album that came out in the 70’s, but it was oddly pretty solid in my opinion. “Man too small for his skin makes tunes to wiggle your finger to”
Iggy Pop’s second album was put together with the help of David Bowie, and I think I heard David doing some background vocals. This was categorized as punk in those days (1977), although it sounds like rock to me. The album was better than expected - solid 3.5 out of 5 stars.
Whew, caught up just in time for an Iggy Pop jumpscare. It occurs to me although I've heard of him I have no idea what his deal is. Would have guessed 80s. Well, let's see. He's Bowie-adjacent. 'Lust for Life' is in a ton of stuff. But it does sound 80s! I'm validated! Some of the later songs sound more 2000s Rock Countdown (Arctic Monkeys-esque). Some are a little more guitar-heavy though. There is a guy named Warren Peace who wrote one of them, which I like, although that's not his real name. BUT it turns out there was a baseball player actually named (William) Warren Peace, which is better. Maybe I already learned this earlier, actually. Ah well. The album was fine. Didn't wow me.
Lust for life has to be up there with one of the best album starters of all time? Overall the album was enjoyable for someone who knows his hits but not his back catalogue really at all.
Meh. I'll give it a 3 because it's a classic, but I think that's very generous. I find his stuff pretty bland.
A couple good songs and a lot of Bowie's outtakes. I think I prefer the Stooges.
some great hits in that album!
Enjoyed a few tracks in here, but I thought the rest of the record was just decent. Favourite Track(s): The Passenger Least Favourite Track(s): Sixteen, Turn Blue
Lust for Life and Success are the standout tracks. They are coincidentally the two upbeat tracks. The rest is ok, but kind of one-note
Lust for Life and The Passenger were the standouts. The rest were alright but not something I’d come back to.
Just good, classic rock n roll.
Overall a fun time. The title track is one of my absolute favorite songs. I would've preferred more high-energy tracks like that to the Bowie pastiche songs, which kinda killed the vibe of the album. Iggy Pop is cool and charismatic enough, why he felt the need to rip off another cool guy is beyond me. This came out in 1977, which was the year that punk really took off via the Ramones and Sex Pistols. I wish Iggy leaned more into that, given how he was one of the forefathers of punk.
2 radio hits surrounded by 7 passable fillers. You've probably heard what this album has to offer without ever listening to this album, making this a "non essential" listen. Very 70's rock&roll, very of its time.
Classic
I liked a few, will probably listen to some again
50s style soulful songs peppered in between a couple electric tracks with major staying power. 50s style soulful songs peppered in between a couple electric tracks with major staying power. Can really hear the Bowie signature on a few of those older style tunes.
Fun, but not memorable
3/5
Generally fun but not something I'd listen to again. Reminds me of the kind of shit my male friends would put on and give me an inferiority complex about because I felt like I didn't ~get~ it. That being said The Passenger is good. Turn Blue was a DNF, that song sucks shit.
This is the best album I've heard associated with Iggy Pop, though there are still a few songs I really dislike. I was listening to 'Tonight' thinking that I would prefer it sung solely by Bowie, and lo and behold he did do a cover of it (though I prefer the OG's production, so I guess there's no winning).
british decemberists
Not bad, fun to hear David Bowie on bg vocals
3/5
You know, didn't feel like it
Relatively enjoyable to listen to with plenty of catchy melodies and lovely guitar licks. The dodgy lyrical themes bring it down a notch - I'm looking at you, Sixteen. Lust For Life, The Passenger, and Tonight the standout tracks.
List for Life and The Passenger are great songs. The others are effectively Bowie b-sides that I’m not fussed about.
And to think I've gone my whole life without listening to Iggy Pop...glad that changed today.
The Passenger will always be such an iconic song. The rest of this album was just acceptable though.
face is too big
TIL about Sable Starr and Iggy Pop's "relationship." Yikes! I guess I'm not too surprised there's a song called "Sixteen" after all. Anyway, I would like to praise this album despite Iggy Pop's pedophilia. He's talented and created a great album in Lust for Life with a combination of proto-punk and rock. He mumbles and stumbles through his vocals, but it makes for an engaging sound. The title track is absolutely, undeniably an extremely catchy song. David Bowie's footprint is all over Lust for Life, yet Pop does make the album his own. Bowie's presence doesn't overshadow because Pop has such a signature sound. I just wish that the groundbreaking musicians weren't so shitty. Sure, we're all human, but pedophilia is beyond what I can handle. 3.5
It is so obvious on this album not only that David Bowie and Iggy Pop were friends, but that Bowie produced this album. This genuinely sounds like it could BE a Bowie album. I wasn't very versed in Iggy Pop's solo music (aside from "The Passenger" and "Lust For Life"), so this was a learning experience for me, and I definitely enjoyed it. [Some several minutes later] I kind of fell into a rabbit hole reading about Iggy Pop's pedophilia, which I first learned about via other album reviewers calling him out here. He was having a sexual relationship with a 13 year old groupie. And it's not just speculation; he went on to sing about having sex with her on a much later album, mentioning her by name and age. Said album came out in the 90s, so if we are using the (very weak) excuse that "pedophilia was more broadly accepted in the 70s", well it certainly wasn't accepted in the 90s when he wrote his song about it, showing no remorse or guilt. All of this left me feeling a bit gross about liking this album. Why is his behavior not put more on blast? I guess I'm still going to give this album the rating I originally intended, but I'm balancing it out by adding to the voices of other reviewers who are raising this as the issue that it is, and thereby letting my review mostly be about his gross behavior.
I’m giving this 3 stars, mainly because I expected to enjoy it more than I did.
This was a pretty solid album but I really didn't hear any standouts beyond Lust for life (and the real standout is the beaming photo of iggy on the album cover!).
Didn't like Iggy's vocals or most of his lyrics, the band was good though
Whilst the album has a couple of my favourite Iggy tracks on it (Passenger and Lust For Life) it’s not one I’d really listen to in full. It’s ok, but doesn’t set my world on fire.
Honestly not much stuck out to me.
A few good songs that I enjoyed but overall I wouldn't say it was anything I HAD to go back to. Strong 3.
Very Iggy Pop.
Enjoyed this much, much more than the Stooges Raw Power. Just had a better feel and songs.
Pretty good. Idk why I had in my head that Iggy Pop was hard rock.
this album is ok and kind of fun but I just didn’t like its sound that much. It’s like a more energetic Lou reed. Also the album cover mildly creeps me out (sorry iggy). turn blue is pretty weird but it might be my fav song instrumentally
This was a fun one. I don't think I really jived with it enough to consider it a four but a very solid three for me.
Thoughts before listening: The title track is great, but I don't know much else about this album. Id assume some dirty, punk inspired rock though. Review: I was pretty accurate with the sound and the great title track. "Passenger" is another really good song from this album, with the rest being perfectly fine. David Bowie produced this album and this does come off as a dirtier version of what he was producing around the same time...glammy punk inspired rock n roll. I'm not sure I need to listen to Iggy singing about showing his explosion to "sweet sixteen" though. 3 stars.
old noise
Classic, sure, but a lot less biting than I expected.
The reason this is the album cover is because it was the only photo available at the time where Iggy had his shirt on
Decent album.
Passenger best song 3.8
It's alright. Not really that interesting. Middle of the road. Stand out song: passenger
Solid record from a legend, some classic tracks on here.
This is so fun! [Lust for Life] is very upbeat, a different sound from what I usually go for. [Sixteen] is also nice. [Passenger] is just, lovely. Favourite(s): Passenger, Neighbourhood Threat
Definitely a solid album, enjoyed it a lot more than I thought it would, but probably would not listen to this album again for awhile.
Iggy Pop, _Lust For Life_ 🌟🌟🌟 I like it and had no idea what its singles Lust For Life and Passenger say about the album as a whole It had a pleasing mid-70s Rolling Stones/Bowie feel to it I had never heard the track _Tonight_ and found it absolutely stunning It's a grab-bag of stuff. More polished and socially acceptable than The Stooges, but maybe missing some of that garage energy too.
Some very good songs, Passenger e.g. But in general to slow for me
Yeah this was fun. Sent me on a deep dive to the history of that supremes/motown rhythm. Will the next artist also be white tho?
Įdomu, kai kurias žinojau, šiaip malonus paklausymas.
𝘓𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘓𝘪𝘧𝘦 is the second byproduct of David Bowie’s Berlin trilogy, though it only partially bears his sonic fingerprints. The record is rawer and more straightforward than Bowie’s own work of the era, with Iggy Pop’s charisma front and center on classics like 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘗𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘳 and the title track. Energetic and iconic, but not as consistently compelling as its reputation suggests.
Success is the standout track for me in this album
I was excited to give this a full listen already being a big fan of the title track and The Passenger. And I’ve got to say, those two songs were the highlights.
I think you must see Iggy Pop live in person to fully appreciate his manic approach to music. Unfortunately does nof translate well to disc - rather somewhat boring...
Decent album. Heard the passenger before. Definitely the best track. Keeping this album but not something I would listen to often.
Gritty rock, very listenable vocals that hold your attention. Iggy has such a unique quality to his voice. Much less punky than I would have expected due to the pictures I have seen of him without having listened to his music previously.
Didn't realize how many Iggy Pop songs I knew. Good album.
I know what the wiki article said, but still, all I hear is Bowie’s influence. Maybe that’s just a sign I need to dig into Iggy’s own music to get better acquainted…
Parhaat: Lust For Life, The Passenger, Neighborhood Threat
While upbeat, it feels little repetitive. The vocals are a bit droning. I guess that's another album that demands you to focus on the lyrics and their context? either that, or this type of rock is just kinda outdated. It's... kinda boring. :( Ok, Tonight was kinda nice. Was it covered by Tina Turner later? I do have to say, my feet are tapping to the beat. The songs ARE catchy. OK. Turn Blue is AMAZING. I love this vibe. It actually caught my interest again. ...but the rest of the songs are still just not my type.
bowie? neighbourhood is hilarious
It's got a lot of power in the record, I like the variety of vocals. It's weirdly optimistic / positive feeling? Unfortunately, nothing really is sticking right now but it feels like a fun album to have on in the background
Some solid classics, but not a fan of the mumble singing and some of the lyrics haven't aged well.
This album grew on me after a few listens but ultimately The Passenger is the only song I really like. I was in a terrible band that covered this song in high school and I probably have a sentimental attraction to it.
I realize upon listening this that while I knew what Iggy Pop looked like - I didn’t know anything about his music! Recognized a few songs, like a few more, some had questionable lyrics, but ultimately I enjoyed the music.
I like Iggy, I mean he’s a legend after all. But he’s not much of a singer is he? Have you heard his version of China Girl? At least 2 of his best songs are on here and it was a mostly fun album to listen to!
Unique voice and songs surprisingly durable, but a bit of a pedophilia vibe.
I don’t have much experience with Iggy Pop, so I went into this record fairly blind. It was a good record, with solid rock instrumentation and a good vocal performance from Iggy (whose voice is a weird blend of Bowie and Joe Cocker in a way?), but is it a hot take to say I don’t quite get what’s so essential about this record as to include it in the 1001 albums list? Like, don’t get me wrong, there weren’t really any songs I disliked or anything. But the first four songs were extremely forgettable, kind of doing a Rolling Stones/late era-Beatles/Thin Lizzy thing years after those original records. They weren’t bad, but I was surprised at just how…generic they felt. Things picked up with “Tonight” and “Success,” which were my two favorite tracks on the album, and then got more experimental and interesting with the final few songs. These tracks really saved the album for me, even though they won’t stick too long in the mind. “Tonight” was a great song, but I prefer the Bowie version from a little later. The last thing I’ll say is that the mixing left a little to be desired. This was not going for a super clean sound clearly, and I thought the best songs here really captured that feeling (“Success” was especially good in that regard). But some songs had the vocal track way too low, and others brought Iggy in a little heavy. It felt like a record that could have used a little more time fiddling with the details to get a slightly nicer sound at the back end, which would totally have been possible without sacrificing the dirty sound. I want to be clear: I liked this album just fine. But there’s no tracks on it that I see myself returning to anytime soon. As a member of this list, it feels a little lesser-than.
Fine
This album has so many bangers that have been sucked into commercials. Solid, again punk was very poppy back in the day.
Unexpectedly good and enjoyable noise.
Light and easy listening. Sometimes not cohesive. Overall enjoyable. Doubt if i would buy it. Solid 3
didnt stand out besides: The Passenger (but that obvious) Turn Blue Neighborhood Threat
The passenger was great, the rest of the album muddled together. All in all, it was aight
This album was failing to grab my attention for almost the whole thing, then the last three songs came on. It was an entirely different musical experience as a blend of pop and spoken word romantic poetry, it was crazy.
It was okay, nothing groundbreaking for me.
Short and sweet, 2 classic tracks and a garage rock background.
love the passenger! excited to listen to iggy pop a british icon
I like passenger This is the first album in a couple that I’m fr listening to all the way through because I have to clean today… so need to be doing that more I think I judged some of the albums unfairly because barely had time to listen Anyways I’m also loving Tonight
Maybe I’m getting jaded because I probably should love this but I don’t… still a good punk album from this handsome young man.
Before I ever listened to Iggy Pop, I knew him as that shirtless guy who looked extremely punk/rock and roll. Then I heard the title track -- now used in TV spots for Carnival cruises -- and it blew my brain. It's good and catchy and all, but it is in no way punk or rock and roll... devoid of any context I would guess it was by a one-hit wonder named like Jimmy's Backyard Bumpkins during the original British Invasion in 1969. Anyway, this is a good album but nothing extraordinary. More influenced by disco and late 70s stuff than I would've liked. And the back half is just not very interesting to me. Probably better as an EP that ends with The Passenger.
Not really my thing, but liked it.
Loud, proud, melodic. Love Iggy’s voice.
There are songs in this album that I’ve heard before but had no idea they were by Iggy Pop. I really enjoyed the rhythm sections of the songs.
His second album. Rock / Punk. Album produced by David Bowie. Opening track, Lust For Life is a well known classic. The Passenger is also another good one. The rest of the album feels like a bunch of Bowie knock offs. A bit Bowie wannabe. A solid album but thats it really.
That's not my taste in music - except the brilliant song "The Passenger"
Some great songs some good songs couple of duds
This was grand. Enjoyable, but I wouldn't be racing to hear it again. The two big tunes are great, of course. "Tonight" has echoes of Bowie and the Stones. "Success" is one that I might remember if I heard it again. And I Am Kloot certainly seem to have heard "Neighbourhood Threat" !
Fun upbeat, listened to this on a couple bike rides in NY and def keeps the vibe up … the glamour rock which I’ve enjoyed is also audible in multiple parts which I imagine are bowies finger print
Had no idea Bowie was involved with this one. Can't hear Lust For Life without thinking of Trainspotting.
“…fashion, style, elitism, satanism…”
***An ok album
Great!
OH MY GOD THE INTRO WAS A WHOLE MINUTE the song lust for life felt sweet, like something i'd leave on for cooking bread and eggs. good place vibes. not a big fan of the voice. all the songs remain in the same tone throughout the verses. I liked the beginning verse and intro of 'some weird sin', lyrics seem a bit shallow..? Passenger is nice, has a positive vibe to it. Glad i listened to it!!
I enjoyed this album quite a bit, even if Iggy looks like Ellen on the cover. The Passenger is definitely a solid track, but I think I'd have to go with Lust for Life as my favourite track, even if it's a little cliche.
This was the first Iggy Pop I didn’t hate. It was actually pretty good. His music sounds matured, more put together and more thought out.
Not bad!
Two absolute classic tracks don’t make this a classic album. Revisiting this album today still can’t find another track to appreciate.
big fucking television
Its ok, love the guy, stooges the greats
1977. Some enduring hit songs and overall solid story telling. I think this is Iggy's best album
good shit
Not too shabby. 3/5
Some good songs, I need to listen again properly
It was fine
Sounds eclectic and generic at the same time somehow
Very briefly my favourite album when I was maybe 15? Had no idea who Iggy was nor Bowie’s involvement. All I knew was the dj at the Batschkapp in Frankfurt, Germany, played The Passenger every Friday and that was my jam. That’s basically where I’m still at with Lust for Life: I dig the title track and am aware there are other songs, but The Passenger stands well above the rest. I am told it was in a commercial.
Standout Songs: Some Weird Sin The Passenger Tonight
Thought I had listened to this before, but I guess not that closely. Between Lust for Life and The Passenger + The Stooges I expected to like this more. Minus a star for Sixteen. The number of musicians that wrote songs about lusting for underage girls in the 70s/80s is unbelievable.
I kind of expected better from this album. It was good and I enjoyed listening to it, but I wanted a certain je ne sais quoi to it given the hands involved in its creation. And I couldn't find that here, which is disappointing.
Had a very classic 2nd British invasion rock sound. Felt similar to a lot of things I've heard before (the clash, David Bowie (ziggy stardust, let's dance etc)). I feel meh about it? The music was good, and within my tastes, actually, but it didn't grab me. I found myself treating it more as background music.
Good crunchy angry rock.
A few stand out tracks - lust for life, passenger, success - but was already familiar with those. Didn't care for most of the other tracks
The best parts sounded reminiscent of Bowie. And what do you know: this was a Bowie collaboration. Call me crazy, but I’d rather just have Bowie.
It's alright.
Got some belters but a bit same-y.
This album seems to be somewhat love/hate, but it was pretty unremarkable for me. I liked Lust for Life, The Passenger, and Fall In Love With Me most.
Odd duck
A very strong album - ‘Passenger’ is one of my favourite Iggy Pop tracks. Overall, a consistently strong effort.
my fav (obviously beside the passenger) was turn blue 3,5/5 😁
One of many "I don't mind this but I'm not overly enthusiastic either" albums. Echoes of Bowie, and the Stones. Raw and rhythmic.
It’s a fun album. Nothing earth shattering. Average I’d say.
A solid thundering album that doesn’t really relent. The title track was quite solid and the Passenger is a good song. I could take or leave the rest though the I enjoyed Bowie influence
Solid album - probably won’t listen to it again but a couple of iconic tracks!
Should have taken notes, I think I liked it
A couple of classics on here. Doesn't honestly pique my interest too much but 'twas solid Dude looks like Ellen DeGeneres in this album cover
The Passenger. Also looks like a young version of a guy I work with
We did David Bowie, Low, a few months back, a related album recorded when they were in Germany. I didn't enjoy Low that much and wasn't optimistic about this one, but I was pleasantly surprised. A nice hard edge to the power pop tunes. The Passenger was the hit for me.
Very classic. The last 3 songs are my favorite.
Ok
I found this album to be another that was carried by its good songs, but otherwise not particularly impressive. The majority of the tracks were solid pop rock efforts, with a few tracks that stood out. Aside from those, though, the rest was pretty forgettable. I think the only track I actively didn't like was Turning Blue, which was also the longest track of the album. Otherwise, the songs weren't bad. I can't say I liked them all, but I didn't hate them either. The album is solidly in OK territory. Some tracks got up to "good" level, but not many. Overall: 3.1/5
Title track is iconic.
Cole you’re spot on! I heard The Killers too
Fine. Listenable. Not as edgy quite yet.
Fun, energetic, I really liked the guitars. Favs were Some Weird Sin and Success.
A couple of very good tracks but generally only listenable.
lord have mercy, that cover wow. straight up got jumpscared me when this album revealed itself ofc hes a pedophile damn. idk im not feeling this one tbh
Not bad, very 70s rock - was impressed that there wasn't much difference in quality between the singles and the rest of the album
3.4/it's fine but nothing special. bowie did good
Passenger and Lust for Life stand out. Not much else really does.
Great grimy rock and roll vibes, the standouts really prop up the rest of the album, the rest of which isn't bad but lesser in comparison. Standouts: Lust For Life, The Passenger, Tonight
I like Tonight and Neighborhood Threat a bunch.
This is alright. I had listened to it years ago and had a vague memory of it not really working for me. David Bowie's fingerprints are all over this album, Sixteen would have fit right in on any of his mid 70s albums, or Tonight on Scary Monsters. You would think I would really enjoy it but there's something missing that I can't put my finger on It may be the production. I find it a bit murky and it saps the energy of the songs. If the album sounded better I think I would like it quite a bit more, as I think most of the songs are well written. Besides Turn Blue, as I found the vocals annoying and I was tempted to skip that Highlights: Fall In Love With Me, Sixteen
content 1/5 vocals 4/5 guess thats a 3/5 then
Not my favorite pervert but rock on
I know I said I’m not taking off points for the artists being freaks (derogatory) because a lot of them are…. But if you have a song about giving a 16 year old your “explosion” and it’s so obvious that even I can’t listen to the song without immediately getting it, it makes your grossness bleed into the album. All those appropriate-aged fans and Pop and Bowie still chose children? Ew. Anyways the album was gonna be a 4 now it’s a 3. P3dos can rot tho.
3.5 for me, Bowie saving this with his songwriting and production
Just a thought I had while listening: I really didn't pay attention how many songs there used to be with lyrics like "you're so young", "you're so innocent" and so on. Feels creepy now.
The self-titled song is incredible catchy and made move along the rhythm. Everything else is alright. Iggy pop's voice is kind of charming, and I don't think there's anything more I could say about this album that captured my attention. Decent album but without anything to make me want to return to the whole thing. Besides, I don't know what it is about the cover art, but it is really creepy. Maybe it is the fact that he is looking directly to the camera. Feels like it pierces my soul.
Ganz gut, The Passenger ist ein toller Song. -1 für das grausige Albumcover
Not bad even though I don’t listen to this type of music that often but I still wouldn’t add any to my playlist and could do with some more variation actually.
Surprisingly interesting songs, after your get through list for life title track
Didn’t mind this album at all.
better than i expected. kinda rolling stones adjacent
Fun
Some incredibly timeless tracks on here. The rest is a little forgettable to me.
I was worried when I saw the genre listed as punk, but this was surprisingly good.
Could definitely hear the Bowie. Had a few songs I really enjoyed, but generally not for me.
Album was OK.
Nice
Good album, but sounded like it was being played next door. Poor production
Enjoyable
The Passenger is a great song of course. The rest of the album is a bit mixed but sounds good overall. Bowie'esque indeed but not quite as good as Bowie's best. Oh and that cover photo is rubbish! Has a very different feel from the music. Looks like an album by some B rated french charmeur.
Would be a 2 but the passenger bangs
Was okay. 3/5
Iggy Pop's "Lust for Life" is an album that I enjoyed listening to, but I probably won't be revisiting it anytime soon. The album has its moments, with energetic tracks and memorable lyrics. It was a worthwhile listen and had its standout moments.
Had never listened to Iggy Pop. I felt like it got better as I went deeper, I think it sounds ahead of its time in some ways. Some classic songs on this album
Regular bops. Not phenomenal. 3/5
Not my forte
Great voice. Good introduction into punk--can feel some Motown influences, too.
Seems weird I never listened to this before. Lust For Life (the song) has such a ridiculously long intro - never noticed before! I had no clue The Passenger and Lust For Life were on the same album. Ture Blue sounds like it should be in Rocky Horrors but not in a good way and its far too long. Fall In Love with Me also outstays its welcome.
My wife said it sounded like Bowie and the Doors but worse! Hard to argue with that but I really like Lust for life as it on the Trainspotting soundtrack.
Why do so many 70s rock stars have to have a song called Sixteen. Good lord. Overall the album pretty good that song left off. My favorite song was Neighborhood Threat.
glad I listened!
It's a good sounding album. Passenger was probably my favorite track. I would listen to it again, but it didn't stand out immediately.
Que nenni, mes amis, car voilà que déboule "Lust for Life". "Lust for Life", "The Passenger", "Some Weird Sin", "Success"… "Lust for Life" ? "The Passenger" ?
Was ok? Couple of solid tracks on it
It was pop, rock, alt and probably similar to other at the time, but I couldn't help but enjoy the first half of this album. It all worked in a weird fun way. The Passenger was one of my favorite. But then we had to go down into wanting young girls and then Turn Blue. Apparently Turn Blue is about heroin and depression but some of the symbolism just ain't right.
Iggy is the godfather of punk music with The Stooges, and later in 1977 he became a godfather of goth with The Idiot. Here on Lust For Life, he grooves and rocks pretty well. Also worth noting, David Bowie produced this album. His influence is clear as day. In fact sometimes it can be hard to differentiate between his and Iggy’s voice. This would be during Bowie’s Berlin trilogy era (Low, Heroes, The Lodger) where he was creating some of his most successfully experimental music. I’m giving this a 3.5.
I was excited to get this because I love the title track and have heard good things about the whole album. I really liked The Passenger, and Success and Tonight are cool too. It was hard to get past Sweet Sixteen though. What is with so many dudes wanting underage girls? And then writing a whole song about it to include on your album. Ick. I wanted to love this, but the creepo factor in that track tarnished the listening experience for me a bit, sadly.
More nuanced than I expected. Would listen again
The highs are incredibly high here. But theres some pretty big slow spots where it comes a lil bit of a bore. Stil love the overall glam and proto vibe
This was better than I thought! Passenger is a really cool song.
is this the song from billy elliot? love the first track! Very much the music my mum and dad used to listen to. Enjoying "the passenger" too - didn't realise they did this. Loveit :)
I don’t know if I’d listen to this again Tonight or not.
Not what I was expecting. Of I’ve heard Lust for Life and The Passenger but the rest of the album is very cool. Tonight is probably my favorite track. Iggy is so soulful. And probably the best album cover art ever!!
3/5 all songs where decent
Old school
the passenger, my beloved 🥰 neighborhood threat is ein 10/10 banger rest is alright ig
Same old punk/pop, bowie-like bullshit. Not my cup of tea. I do like The Passenger though.
A couple of fun songs, but sixteen? Yeesh
fun classic rock album. vibes remind me of a bar night or even poker night? - the passenger - turn blue
Way different vibe than expected. Very Bowie.
What a winning smile. Two and one half out of five.
it's cool
Compared to punk music today, this is alright. Today’s artists in this genre have flown so far away from the base model that it exposes their lack of musicality and taste.
The title track opens this album and it's very familiar to me. I haven't heard it in a long time but it's still a great tune that makes you wanna get up and move to its ridiculously infectious beat. That's pretty much the story for this whole album - infectious, melodic tunes. It's produced by David Bowie and you can tell, it's got his fingerprints all over it. Every little guitar melody that gets stuck in your head you can just tell it has his influence. Overall there is some very good stuff here and it's pretty catchy throughout. The backing vocals are a highlight too. I will say that the quality does take a slight dip in the final third but this is a solid album, more than likely a bit of a grower. A very high three.
I enjoyed this, and I really wasn't expecting that to happen. Very catchy and fairly unique sounding.
Not a terrible album, and it has a few good songs on it. Iggy Pop never really interested me with his music. But, I respect the album and it should be listened to at least once. 3/5
A few strong songs
It's an odd sound. Kind of anticipatory of the 80s – but I don't necessarily hate it. In fact, for punk, it's unexpectedly good. Iggy Pop has a good, gritty vocal with more emotion and better technique than the usual drunken schoolboy slurring that you tend to associate with the genre. But even on Lust For Life, I'd prefer a voice that's more rock-oriented, given the sonic focus on the distorted lead guitar – but it's passable as is. Pop's voice imitates that of David Bowie around the same time, particularly in the song Tonight. (It makes sense, given Bowie's heavy influence on Pop's style and his involvement in several of Pop's albums.) You can also hear influence from earlier blues-rock, particularly the likes of Mick Jagger and Jim Morrison. But once you make the comparison, you realise the 60s guys are simply better. Instead, the album's greatness is carried by Bowie's compositions. The technically straightforward rock feel with countless quirks added (e.g. octave-harmonised vocals, all-over-the-place basslines) is The title track is great, being a sort of repeating anthem with a pretty darn convincing vocal hook. The Passenger has a very memorable guitar chord progression; it's obvious why it's the most popular song on here. Extra points for Tonight being a multi-part song. ...And minus 1 star for such an odd fixation on 16-year-old girls. Normally I don't pay much attention to lyrics, but these ones were bad. Iggy was 29 years old upon the album's release, so there's no excuse. 3/5 Key tracks: Lust For Life, The Passenger, Tonight
Solidly good album. A couple bangers and really like the Bowie-ness that’s infused on the rest.
Eh. It's decent, just nothing I haven't heard before.
You could feel the David Bowie in this. However it failed to rise to the heights of David Bowie. A couple of bangers but broadly, disappointingly, mid.
I'm liking this.
I could tell he had fun making this, but it wasn’t my jam
Easy to listen, a distinctive voice in Pop, and enjoyable overall album. 6.5/10.
List for Life and The Passenger are great songs. I also enjoyed Neighborhood Threat cause it was punk adjacent. The rest of the album reminded me how pedophilia, glorified destruction and uncontrollable ick drive me away from listening to more classic rock
Overall decent (+3) a few pretty good songs (+1) my dad used to listen to it (-1)
Imagine if Iggy Pop got a low taper fade
Just great, kick ass rock and roll. Sorry I didn't listen to this in its day.
It’s fine, not lustful
Enjoyed more tracks than I thought I would
This was fine. I actually liked it more than expected. 2.8
I actually enjoyed this more than I expected. Some good jams and would throw it on again.
I know a handful of the songs and maybe listened to this album one time through but I can say he was a little ahead of his time in 1977 with the title track which still sounds fresh. This would have been a bigger hit 5-6 yrs later with MTV behind it. I love the title track, "The Passenger" (nearly a half billion listens!) is a real gem and covered well by a few different artists. The song with the least number of listens is still over 2M, that's saying something, this is a well respected and listened to album from top to bottom. I had NO IDEA that "Tonight" was done by Iggy first, I only know the Bowie/Tina Turner version (1984) which I love. Influence, longevity, radio hits still being played, covered songs, this is a better Top 1001 choice than I would have thought. Still pretty sure it wouldn't make my list but I respect it's presence.
Feels like an overall "ok" album but nothing that sticks out. "The Passenger" is the best song which seems typical for these classics that have one great song.
Perhaps better than I expected, and the title track is a great song.
Was enjoying this album, lots of energy, but “Turn Blue” knocked it down a full star
Aside from the horribly dated and often nonsensical lyrics the songwriting regarding the instruments and composition is generally pretty good, which as I understand David Bowie had a hand in. The first two songs I found to be weirdly unpleasant and pretty boring. The Passenger is easily the highlight on the album and it’s great; energetic and fun the song excels in making you want to sing along and the groove is infectious. Audibly Pop is emulating Bowie on a couple of the tracks on here like Tonight, having said that he does a pretty good job on that one and it’s another highlight on the album. Success toes a line for me, I found it quite annoying at first listen, but on return I think the guitar work is great and the duelling vocals on the chorus works pretty well. The production and mix is really good on here as-well, I think it’s a song that will get better with each relisten. Turn Blue tries a slower paced emotional ballad style song that again has Pop doing his best Bowie impression. But I don’t think it works anywhere near as well as Tonight does. I thought I was listening to Don’t fear the Reaper when Neighbourhood Threat started and all I could think of throughout the rest of the track is that I’d rather be listening to Blue Öyster Cult. Fall In Love With Me is fine doesn’t exactly end the album with a bang but not a whimper either. Overall I’d give the album a 3 would’ve been a 2 if not for The Passenger.
3 5
6/10 not my style did like lanas album of the same name tho
It’s a real tragedy that my Millennial brain can’t help but tie the title track to that Royal Caribbean commercial from the early 2000s. That’s a great song! Undeniable. The rest of Lust for Life as an album is like a parallel version of David Bowie who’s a little bit more punk, a little bit more American, and a little bit more up my alley. Which makes sense, because it basically is a Bowie album in disguise; he composed the majority of these songs, he co-produced this whole album, and he plays keys and is obviously singing backing vocals all over this record. Despite the heavy influence, even as a Bowie hater, I’m cool with it, even on songs that basically feel like Bowie songs. I’m cool with “Tonight” and “Success,” two tracks that benefit from strong hooks and riffs, and evolve naturally as songs. I also like when it starts to sound like The Stooges are backing Bowie, like on “Neighborhood Threat.” It’s the rest of the record that I take issue with. Sure, the title track is a pretty static 2-part change up for 5 whole minutes, but it sells it with massive hook and Pop’s general vibe. On the other hand, strange art pop meanderers feel either dated lyrically (“Turn Blue”) or sonically (“Fall In Love With Me”). I’m okay with “The Passenger,” but it’s a bit too post-punk for my tastes; meanwhile “Sixteen” and “Some Weird Sin” lean too heavily on the art punk, and morph too obviously into Bowie songs, pulling me out completely. On paper, I think Lust for Life had the potential to be the perfect album for me. In practice, it’s simply a vibe thing, and the bad vibes are all linked to my indescribable resentment of nearly everything Bowie touches. And because Pop mostly ditches his proto-punk past to assume Bowie’s affectation, sonic palette, and general aura, I’m pushed out of the club by a lot of this record. It does, however, sometimes achieve a balance between Bowie and Pop’s aesthetics, and in those moments, I hesitantly walk back in, though I still find myself leaning against the doorframe beneath the exit sign for most of this record.
Previously rated: The Idiot (4/5) ********************* On first listen, I liked The Idiot a little better than this. If I listened to them again, it might be the opposite. The biggest problem I had with this one was the sound. It was muddled, especially with the vocal effects. Some songs felt like they went a bit too long. Otherwise a fun album. Again, reminded me of Bowie.
Pre-listening thoughts: I’ve heard of Iggy pop/the stooges, but I've never listened to any of his/their stuff. Curious about this since he and Bowie were in cahoots. Post/during listening thoughts: you can hear Bowie’s influence on here for sure, down to the vocal performance (and the backing vocals literally lol). The arrangements are more punk than standard Bowie though, and I’m guessing that part is all Iggy Pop. Also unrelated but curious if Lana del Rey’s album of the same title is a reference to this or something else. Fall in Love with Me is kinda giving Franz Ferdinand. This is good, I’m not like enthusiastic about it but I don’t dislike it. I do feel bad judging any music rn bc I’m sick and my hearing isn’t at its greatest, but I’m like 3 albums behind so gotta lock in. 6/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: nah Fav tracks: Lust for Life, Tonight Least fav tracks: Sixteen
ugh the production gives me a headache and the playing is quite boring. lyricism is good though
I considered giving it four stars, but then Spotify autoplayed a song from The Idiot right after, and it was so much better than anything on Lust for Life
Particolare passare da Raw Power a questo
Lust for Lude and Tge Passenger are bangers. The rest of the album is less memorable.
'The Passenger' is a great and iconic track but other than that I found this album rather bland to be honest. 'Lust For Life' and 'Fall In Love With Me' were alright but other than that the album did not live up to my expectations. I will give it a weak 3 rating just because of 'The Passenger' but maybe it would deserve a 2.5 rating to be honest.
I wasn't a fan of the start - I'm not sure how Lust For Life got so popular, but both it and Sixteen have good melodies which get repeated way too much, and weird lyrics (asking about lotion, hypnotizing chickens, and lusting after a sixteen year old?). After that the album got a lot better for me, with The Passenger being my favorite, probably because Holiday by Green Day uses the same exact chord progression.
Fajne, punkowe, lekkie, slucha sie dobrze
Top level 3. Lust for Life is OK, Passenger is a stone cold classic.
Sonst meh. Favorit: LfL.
Lust For Life is a great song and perhaps the highlight of the album.
I think one of my first introductions to Iggy Pop was the part that he played in the movie the Crow: City of Angels. He’s a weird dude man! This album is actually pretty good and you can definitely feel the Bowie influence on it in the punk world he is considered to be one of the fore fathers of the movement but outside he has had many singles that are cemented their way into history. Lust for Life is a classic used in a variety commercials and TV shows. But I have to agree The Passenger is probably his best song on this album tonight. Sounds like it could’ve been off a Bowie album. I was impressed.
3/5
passenger is great
Good Bowie adjacent album that I think parts of still hold up. Bowies hand is clear even if Pop had more of his own hand in this and while that might be a slight against Pop it’s a plus for the album. If we just take out any reference to teens we’re good to go!
It was okay, just old. It was progressive in its time, I'm sure.
Lust for Life made me very cheerful.
Didn't speak to me
A perfectly fine punk album. Nothing memorable.
It’s fine. It’s Iggy Pop. Couple hits. Last track sounds like The Killers. Famous rock stars, I challenge you to NOT write a song about having sex with underage girls (might be impossible, it seems)
Great so far, great album. Not sure if there's much replay besides a few songs.
Favorite Track: Lust for Life
Enjoyed it but didn’t love it. Passenger and Lust for Life obviously huge, rest of it blurred into one a bit. Album cover is great 3.25/5
The passenger is a SICK song. otherwise, ehh.
I just had a bad week this time. Nearly all the albums were below 4 stars. "Lust For Life" is one of those records. There are some good songs in this album. "Fall in Love With Me" is my favourite. 3 stars for "Lust For Life".
I liked this a lot more than I thought I would, and there’s some pretty recognisable tracks, but I won’t play it again
6/10 Highlights: The Passenger Lust for Life
The David Bowie influence is obvious. Contains the hit "The Passenger", plus the title track "Lust for Life" which I'd heard before but didn't know was by Iggy Pop.
Passenger and Tonight were good but the rest kind of boring
Better than I expected
not david bowie
a very poppy offering that's fairly uplifting and fun. historically, this was the second album that Iggy & David Bowie worked on together, but in this one, Iggy demanded more control over the production and leaned more towards a hard rock and proto-punk sound than The Idiot. Despite little promotion, it was Pop's highest charting album until 2016, and is frequently praised as Pop's most energetic album and widely regarded as one of his best works. I totally get the energy from this album, and at the time, especialyl with Bowie influences, this really seems to carry a lot of interesting confluence between art pop and rock music.
Horniest man of the 70s?
Imagine if it didn't open with that track. Hmmm well I suppose 16 is legal but how old were you Iggy? Much Bowie sound. So I'm dying at age 22 and I get told everything is going to be ok tonight? More accessible than The Stooges, for sure. Almost mainstream sound. Is the cover photo meant to be a cheesy yearbook photo?
It's probably common knowledge but I didn't realize there was such close collaboration between Iggy Pop and David Bowie. Wikipedia says Pop used Bowie's arrangement for the title track, which is a great song. I think I first heard it on the Trainspotting soundtrack. The rest of the album is fine but nothing else stands out. It would have been cool to see Pop do a live show back in the day - sounds like he was a great performer.
Good. Eh. Racist?
More modern than I would have expected. The hits have aged really well. The deeper cuts are also great and not the straight forward punk I expected with my metal image of Iggy Pop. Turn Blue is odd but no skip.
A bit of a mixed bag for me where the singles are way stronger than the deep cuts
3 stars. Feels pedestrian at many points but some bangers (Lust For Life, The Passenger, Some Weird Sin).
The Stooges FAVO: Lust for life, The passenger
Good American rock. Good guitar rifts and drums. A solid album
The somewhat tamed, upbeat dancy version of Iggy Pop. Some bangers - some songs are going nowhere. Many go on for too long (Bowie!!!)
