Reviews (page 11 of 13)
Didn't inspire me enough to seriously engage with the music and my experience of it to write a long/funny review.
i liked the two big songs on here! but struggled to really have an opinion on anything else.
decent album. crazy how huge the title track and the passenger are, and everything else here languishes in relative obscurity. iggy pop is certainly an icon of the counterculture zeitgeist from this era, though perhaps a bit of a troubled soul... with that said, I'm not a huge fan of the stooges' sound or output. there's way more music i'd rather listen to and actually enjoy. this solo album is similar. love the huge tracks but none of the other stuff really impressed me. long tracks, got bored, 3 stars. favorites: lust for life, the passenger, tonight
Skimming these two albums to catch up. This one is pretty okay. Seems just like an album made to be watched live and misses a lot of excitement over headphones. Could be higher but prob average a 2-3 star.
Fun album, some parts were not for me. I thought ‘The passenger’ stood out as the best song.
Good
Fun Album, My uncle really loves Iggy Pop, but.. He scares me, such a pasty saccharin smile, and why is he staring at me like that??? I don't think I can revisit this album because listening to it again would mean I have to click past that horrifying human construct.
Passengers - great hook, very red hot chili peppers. Tonight - I dig. Sounds like David Bowie. Success - bluesy and boring
Not exactly my style but I did enjoy listening, my favorite track was “Lust For Life”
Pretty decent I liked a couple of songs. The story behind it was very interesting.
Solid Iggy
Interesting but forgettable.
3.5 Another day, another David Bowie album in the form of an Iggy Pop release. Mostly kidding - while you can still very much hear Bowie’s voice in this (literally at times), you can also definitely tell Iggy was starting to take more ownership of his music with this record. I mean, yes, seven of the nine songs here are credited as having been composed by Bowie, so the umbilical cord clearly wasn’t fully cut, but I think the musical partnership between the two is strongly felt here, most noticeably in the sense that this sounds much more like an evolved Stooges album than its predecessor. And as it so happens, two of Iggy’s fine moments came from this particular partnered effort as well - Lust for Life and The Passenger. I probably don’t have anything to say about either track that hasn’t already been said a million times over, but they are two songs that I believe have gone on to define his career and that I genuinely feel emanate a sense of greatness as you’re listening. Sooo, it’s kind of unfortunate that the rest of this album just doesn’t really hold a candle. There’s nothing here that’s bad (though admittedly the opening lines of Turn Blue made me do a double take), but there’s also nothing here that gets anywhere near the high of the two hits. The closing track, Fall in Love With Me, is probably about as close as it gets, but even then, I still wouldn’t consider it in the same ballpark. The end result is you get a good, but uneven feeling album, so while I enjoyed this, I honestly just don’t feel it’s structured as well as The Idiot is. Definitely a must-listen for an Iggy Pop fan, but it’s not his best (or probably even his second-best) work.
Very top heavy record with great hits up front. Pretty good as far as solo efforts are concerned
Well I can see (hear) the influence he had on music 20 years later. And to be honest I think Iggy did it better. This is quite a good album, not something I would rave over, but certainly worth the occasional listen. Would I buy it? Yes I would, but I wouldn't go looking for it especially. A very high 3.
Great album. A couple of those songs I knew while, but had no idea they were by Iggy Pop. I thought the whole thing was excellent.
It’s ok
Minimum 3 stars just for Lust & Passenger. Not sure I love it quite enough to push it up to 4 though.
Blegh
The Passenger and Lust for Life are obviously the stand out tracks here, there are a couple other songs I think are good, but not enough to warrant a 4. Overall I would describe this album as "fine"; it has it's moments and I can hear the Bowie influence. 3.5
Good
It’s a good listen for sure
Lust for life and the Passenger are pretty decent and the rest is okay. Fine background music
Iggy is a creep. Some of these songs were good, the rest were meh
Muy bueno.
Fun 70's rock from a legend.
It's mostly good, with one standout title track. Always thought the rest of it felt underbaked though.
Everybody knows and loves the classic title track and The Passenger. None of the other songs quite keep up to the same quality, and the trio of songs following Passenger really bring the album down. Some Weird Sin and Neighborhood Threat are quality songs, but a 4/9 success rate doesn’t make a classic album.
I waited too long to rate this one I remember liking it kind of but nothing stood out as super memorable 3-4
Forgetful but not bad
2 great songs, the rest was decidely blegh.
Pretty Good. Passenger is a long time favorite.
Lust for life and Passenger are amazing songs. The rest of the album was alright, but not memorable, I have no urge to repeat again 3
Not my thing.
Gear: Hifiman Arya Mix (2017 Remaster): tendenziell zu heiß und wenig unspektakulär Musik: "Lust for Life" und "The Passenger" absolute Klassiker, hinten raus überraschend auch weitaus weniger "Raw Power" und mehr Bowie (insb. "Success" und "Neighborhood Threat") Wertung: 🍌🍌🍌(🍌)/5
There's some pretty recognisable tracks off of this, it's just a tad unfortunate that the rest of the songs don't quite deliver on the same level. The last track, however, was a really great album closer.
Title track is good and known. Rest of album was ok
Sounds like David Bowie
3.5
Good
it was ok, not sure if it is one of the 1000 top ever, but no complaints
Interesting listen. Definitely get a sense of the Iggy & Bowie connection after listening.
3.8
Normal rock n roll sound
Songs I liked: Lust for Life, The Passenger
Easy listen fav song the passenger
Enjoyed it more than I thought I would. 2.66 per track.
The title track is pretty fun, but the rest is a bit forgettable really. Not bad, just forgettable.
It just didnt excite me rn idk why. It was kinda boring
Kult, et par dritbra hits og mange gode låter men ingen mindblowing rockeopplevelse personlig. Godt album og legendarisk for sin tid.
it's decent but not interesting enough for me to relisten
5/10 this is the standard. Not bad, couple saves. Some were weird. Saves are good though.
Good listen, power punk. I got more into it as it went on. I knew a few, favorited a couple more. Was not aware of the history and extent of Bowie’s involvement. Will be digging into the earlier stuff and revisiting this one. 3.5/5
Seeing Iggy Pop in 1987 on the same bill with The Smithereens, Ziggy Marley, Guns N’ Roses and INXS is hard to top. Unless of course he were to wear see through clear cellophane pants the whole show, which of course he did. A departure from his highly influential Stooges period, this album overall did not disappoint. “Turn Blue” was a bit of a slog, but the rest I found enjoyable. Especially “The Passenger” which would be covered most excellently ten years later by Siouxsie and the Banshees. The biggest puzzle to me is the cover art photo, which looks like something you’d find on an employee badge for someone who didn’t finish his TPS reports. Still, I’ll be revisiting this one.
Nice lil album. Lust for Life is certainly an iconic song and enjoyed quite a few on this. Rebel! Fight the man! The Passenger reminded me of something but I couldn’t quite put my finger on it. I think Green Day took “inspiration” from that for Holiday.
3.4 stars rounded down. "Lust for Life" and "The Passenger" are standouts. "Some Weird Sin" and "Fall in Love With Me" are also solid tracks.
First-time listener. Had heard the title track, and this is one of my top picks off the album. I enjoyed some of the guitar riffs and cowbell. Not a fan of Iggy's voice, and it seemed to change in different tracks, sometimes coming across like he was trying to portray Mick Jagger or Jim Morrison. I found Success annoying after a while, but ended humorously. Turn Blue gave me an Elvis on heroin vibe. It seemed like some of the songs were just improv, maybe like it was a live performance and also just high on heroin. Lyrics mostly seemed shallow, or just nonsense. Maybe I would have liked it as a teenager in 1977. There are a couple of tunes that I might listen to again. Others I might have if the vocals were different. Neighborhood Threat is my top pick and enjoyed the ominous sound, just found the vocals a bit cringey.
3.85/5 This album hits sometimes and misses others. When it hits, though, it hits. Hard. Most of the songs either didn’t hit as hard as I thought they would or Iggy Pop is a little more twisted than I thought. From “Lust For Life”’s chaotic opening, to the twisted realm of “Turn Blue”, to the absolute comedy gold that is “Success”, Iggy Pop displays a lot of emotions here. He’s joking in one song and apathetic in the next, and in the one after that, he cruises on by like Tony Marston in And Then There Were None without a care. This album confidently gets a 77/100, or a 3.85/5. Fav: “Success” Least Fav: “Turn Blue”
It's ok. Despite a couple of real classics on here I won't be rushing back. Patchy.
Alright
He's a weird old fella but the album is pretty good
О, я знаю the Passenger.
Some icons on here, a good album
I had to go back and listen to the Stooges after this because I was shocked this was still Iggy Pop. I really didn't like his older work, and while this was better for me, I still didnt love it. I did like The Passenger and Tonight, though.
Surprised how much I liked it. Very Stones-esque. Title track is a banger.
Not bad
Not what I expected…probably a good thing.
not my style
ok...
The Passenger alone gets this to three stars. The rest is good, not great.
Iggy is great. A man very much with a Lust for Life and great music. The title track and Passengers are pieces of music that seem immune to the passage of time and fashion. The rest is solid enough, but shows it age more. A couple definitely tell of time with Bowie.
Great album
Medium; they all sounded the same but good songs to listen to in the car I guess And I felt like I was in a movie
Not my jam but can jam
Good album, I liked the Bowie influence/contribution. Interested in any other collabs between these two!
Love Stooges, find Iggy a bit meh. This is better than the Idiot, but not by a long way. Title track, Passenger and fall in love with me doing a lot of heavy lifting here
Well, I've never been a fan of Iggy Pop, but this wasn't bad. I'd listen to it again, and may check out some of his newer stuff.
Stand out tracks: Lust for Life, Passenger, and Success
Pop rock, with I fluences ranging from punky to slightly operatic
I am biased on this album haha But again, I feeeeel like it’s a bit too repetitive for me
Of course I knew the hits well - it’s aagin what I expected from the late 70s punkish era. Two songs kind of stood out - Tuen Blue and Fall In Love With Me. I guess the legend of Iggy is in his live shows - the album was just kind of uninspiring.
Pretty good album. The Passenger is definitely my favorite track.
Never really gave Iggy Pop much attention before. 'Lust for Life' is immediately recognizable, had no idea i) what this song was called, ii) that Iggy Pop wrote/sang it and iii) that it was this old! Great song, wonderful way to start the album. Then we immediately go to 'Sixteen' which feels VERY dated... 'show you my explosion / sweet sixteen' are lyrics that are hard to listen to in 2024 and this track alone is likely to lose the album a star. Track 4 is 'Passenger,' another song I recognize and like. I'm surprised by the number of songs I know here. The rest of the album was pretty meh... 3/5
Not gonna lie I only listened to the first three songs. They were decent but I wasn’t wowed. I was excited to listen to this tho because iggy pop is one of those people I’ve always heard about but knew nothing about him. I liked the wiki bit about him with ziggy (coincidence on the rhyming??) stardust. Other than that cool little factoid, I’m just kinda meh.
Enjoyable to listen through. Had multiple songs that I had heard but didn’t know the name to (namely The Passenger and Lust For Life). I have always heard of Iggy Pop, but didn’t know if I knew any of his songs. Glad this one came up on the list.
The first half of the album is incredibly strong, with a classic in The Passenger and a giant in the licensing/advertisement industry with Lust For Life. But once you get to the third quarter of this album it becomes very bluesy and slows way down. The last quart picks up slightly but doesn’t finish in a memorable way. Of the 70s/80s rock stars I feel like you rarely hear about Iggy Pop and that’s unfair, because I don’t think this album should be overlooked.
Another album that I should enjoy more than I do. I know that Iggy Pop is a major influence for the Punk movement, but does that mean I have to like him? Do I have to like Doom to enjoy Call of Duty? Do I have to like newspaper comic strips to enjoy cartoons? Do I have to like 2001: A Space Odyssey to like Interstellar? That being said, it's not like the album was difficult to listen to. I just probably won't be coming back to it.
I’m not a natural Bowie fan. My other half had helped me get into him but there’s something about him I’ve found off-putting. Something about the constant ch-ch-changes in persona. Or something about slightly off Centre about his music? Anyway, I remember buying this CD and being surprised it was so Bowie-esque. It made sense in retrospect, when I learnt about their collaboration, of course. I got it because it has two of the best songs of all time on it: Lust for Life and The Passenger. But I didn’t like the rest of it. This time round I found I liked a few ofher songs - some of the more rockier stuff. But I still feel they don’t live up to the main two. If it were just Lust for Life and The Passenger I’d give it five stars. But as it is, it’s more of a three or three and a half.
Like waiting for the green light to watch chickens cross the road
Herefter bliver pladen lidt mere famlende i sit udtryk. Tydelige Bowie aftryk i produktionen.
So, I liked passenger and a couple of other songs. But passenger was the only one where I was like, what is the name of this song?! So I think 3
Solid punky rock!
I like 2 songs the rest not so much
not bad but I cant get behind the fucking tambourine playing out of tune
downloaded song number 4
Good album! Just not my taste.
It was just ok
A classic
Didn't really know who Iggy Pop was before even though the name was familiar. Recognize the music from classic rock stations back in the day. Not bad, I can see the beginnings of punk/grunge in there which is pretty cool. Not something I would listen to often though.
Overall I found this album unexciting, can’t really point out anything horrible or amazing but didn’t love the overall energy 5.5/10
Pretty boring for the most part.
Sixteen is a creepy song, but this overall was awesome. Success is a cool way to start the morning. It’s funny how Lust for Life sounds sort of commercial now, when I’m sure it didn’t upon release.
Overall very much a 3.5 the first song reminded me of being stuck in a retail store forever and hearing that on a loop. The rest of the album was honestly really good. 2,3,4,5,8 and 9 were my favorites. Really liked the blues inspired track. Not a bad album but not the best.
Title track is solid. Neighborhood Threat is catchy. After that the quality falls off. For the beginner maybe find a greatest hits list for Iggy
Aint nothin to write home about.
Iggy was on star trek deep space nine. It was cool.
Realizing how Iggy Pop songs have been everywhere, and I never knew it. It's too upbeat for me, but I can appreciate its influence.
the passenger 3.5
Ehhhh, det er ok. En del kleine tekster. Første halvdel er bedre!
Fun
I am a fan of Iggy Pop's most famous hits, but I only liked a couple from this album. My favorite song is on here, which makes it better than most albums, but overall it was pretty okay. I would recommend at least a listen or two. Favorite Song(s): "The Passenger" (duh!), "Sixteen"
Fun.
I really tried to think hard as to if it was just my nostalgia giving preference to 'The Passenger' but genuinely, the rest of the album is nowhere near as good. In isolation that song gets a strong 4.5/5 but the rest is average.
Gewoon lekker album, niks mis mee maar ook niet zo bijzonder Would probably not buy, maar wel nice dus alsnog 3 sterren
Ja ok, war jetzt nicht schlecht. Und Passenger geht immer.
This is a fun album. I like Iggy / The Stooges, up to a point. There are some really fun, vibrant tracks on this album, and there are some stinkers. I would argue that every song is about a minute too long for the punk aesthetic.
Unfortunately it was just fine.Passenger is a banger though
Generally pretty good. Not overwhelmingly so, but better than a lot of his weird stuff.
The first half of this album would be an easy 4 stars, but I don't really like the second half (and absolutely hate "Turn Blue") 3.5 Stars Favourite songs: - Lust For Life - Some Weird Sin - The Passenger
Genuinely don’t remember listening to this but I did
Like it more than I though I would
Was alright. Was distracted listening but it seemed like a good album.
Pretty nice.
Cool
Definitely got the theme of this album. I can see where some people may dig it. As a former addict, it made me uncomfortable. But maybe that’s the point.
Best Song: The Passenger. There's something I've always loved about a gruff voice singing a simple "la la la". It's a pleasant little juxtaposition. Worst Song: Turn Blue. Iggy unfortunately does not have the vocal abilities to perform this son, and it feels like he knows it. He resorts to just barking out phrases sometimes. And the slowly spoken, semi-sexual monologue just comes off as cheesy. Maybe Bowie could have pulled this off, but not Iggy Pop. Overall: Learning that this was a collaboration between Iggy Pop and David Bowie helps explain what I felt was wrong with this album. It felt like the vocal performance was often at odds with the way the songs were written, as though the songs weren't organically built around Iggy Pop's particular strengths. What results is an album that ends up sounding like someone doing a cover of someone else's better work.
This album is a bit of a mixed bag for me. I didn’t know the album but I did know a couple of the songs - the title track and Passenger. I also really like Fall in Love with Me, Neighborhood Threat, and Some Weird Sin. I thought the other songs fell a bit short. But I like the energy and overall sound.
Fun album with pretty good guitar parts! It didn’t have much of an impact on me but it was fun to dance to.
The whole album is good but there are a few songs on here that are my all time favorite.
Bitvis Iggy, bitvis Bowie, bitvis Stones, bitvis dårlig Lou Reed. Høydepunkt: "Neighbourhood Threat"
Some tunes on here, much prefer the sound of Iggys voice here than his recent stuff
Good Liked tracks: Lust For Life, The Passenger
Pretty good.
The passenger was a nice song just because the pace was a little lower. I feel like you can hear his voice a bit better in this song. Could you imagine if he had up to date equipment, his songs would probably be so goooood. Not saying they aren’t but it’s an average album
It seems pretty good for its time, just not a personal favorite. Common-ish lyrics and a bland album cover. Some decent rock in here, just not life-changing Personal Favorites: Lust for life, The passenger
Starts with one of those songs I never realized was Iggy Pop that I love. Same with the Passenger. Great tunes. Some of the middle songs start to sound similar to each other but still pretty good. Neighborhood Threat sounds like Bowie. Overall a solid record. Nothing crazy special to me but enjoyable. Respectable 3.
Kinda zoned out while listening, so no notes. Favorite track was lust for life.
3/5. I'm a fan of the stooges and Iggy but this one didn't do it for me. I didn't feel like the songwriting was up to par on this one. The instrumentation was simple but effective, and Iggy performed well but I felt like there was an energy missing, or at least this wasn't the genre of music for him, which is base rock and pop. We either need heavier or weirder. I enjoyed some of the songs but it felt like a Bowie album with someone else singing where his voice should be.
first half of album was cool than dropped off
Bowie link.
I can see the appeal but I don’t see it as my thing. Cool tunes though.
More my style, I can see where he has influenced a lot of future rock albums.
Blind album and artist. Know nothing of the guy but his name. Good 1st impression and decent album. Apparently I already liked the passenger on spotify??? It's good for sure but don't remember the song.
lana del rey sounds different here kind of like bowie
Could see this being used in background music of an 80s coming of age film. Nothing particularly special, liked the electric guitar and use of cowbell. Nothing bad nothing exceptional!
Okay for listening in the background. Not something I'd revisit.
Quite good. I could live without it, but I wouldn't mind another listen.
Fun listen, could do without Turn Blue. Probably won’t add to rotation but enjoyable anyway
Certainly, I’ve heard of Iggy Pop. However, I never knowingly or purposely listened to his music. The first song and title track, Lust for Life, was immediately recognizable, and this album dropped when I was 2 years old. That’s saying a lot. Not the biggest rock fan, but this album as a whole is decent. Kinda soulful.
56/100
Some classics nothing spectacular-3/5.
I love Iggy. But this, I have to admit, fell short for mdt
Easy listen, fun, buoyant album. I enjoyed it in the background.
good, but that Sixteen song hasn't aged well. And it makes feel weird listening to the rest
Decent
Enjoyed a few songs, but wasn’t altogether that enthused about it.
Is alright. I like the guitar stuff in these songs. Only got through the first listen though. Usually I need a couple of listens before I can decide which songs I like from the album. It's kind of dated for my current music taste.
The hits that have been featured on soundtracks and commercials for years are wonderful, but the album gets bogged down by the other tracks that I just don't have an affinity for.
I really liked the track Sixteen. Overall, it wasn’t bad.
This was fine. I can tell it's Iggy's full performance, not just his vocals that makes this notable. Though The Passenger is a real stand out gem.
recognized lust for life. liked the passenger a lot. overall pretty good.
Catchy, upbeat music
Not bad, but was expecting more from Iggy. I have heard his name before, but never heard his music. 3
I think I could probably make one whole album of the solo Iggy Pop songs that I like. This wouldn't be that album, but would include Passenger and I guess Lust For Life (although I'm fairly burnt out on it from mainlining the Trainspotting soundtrack in my youth). Most of the time I find his lyrics pretty cringe (different times, I know, but we're now in different times so...), and while I do like his singing voice, it can get kinda hokey sounding. I still love you Iggy, I just loved you more with the Stooges.
Heilt greit, men artig.
Some classics on here. Not completely my thing but can’t argue with the classics.
Not what I was expecting from iggy but a pleasant surprise
I recognized Lust for Life and Passenger, primarily from Skate 3. Good stuff, not exactly my jam
Kind of a letdown. Lust for Life is a great opening track. Love it. But then the album devolves into a mishmash of punk, R&B, and some straight-up unlistenable tracks. I don't know. Not very punk, and very different than the opening track. All in all, a dud. Without the opening track, it's 2 stars, w/ it's 3.
Good energy, what you would expect from Iggy
The titular song Lust for Life - a great way to start off this album. Such high energy - matching the ecstatic punk icon Iggy Pop. This album is a weird one for me personally. I really love some tracks - the obvious Lust for Life and The Passenger (which would be my top two tracks - and possibly the most popular tracks in the album) but something about this album doesn’t click with me like some other punk albums that came out in the 70s. Namely Sex Pistols’ Never Mind the Bollocks… that came out the same year. However, with that said, I still think this album has enough substance to keep my interest throughout, and I can definitely appreciate Iggy Pop as a performer throughout. Good album overall.
Off to a great start - filled with others that were equally timeless but a bit of filler too.
Album is ok got some classic songs on there
Didn’t love this but I expected to. Don’t know if his association with Bowie just unfairly raised my expectations or what but this album just didn’t do it for me
I feel like a broken record here, but the more of these albums I hear, the greater the influence I realize Lou Reed has had over the past half century. Listening through Lust for Life, I can’t help but think that Iggy Pop is just a cross between Reed and nineties punk rock in general. The record is driven by the title track and “The Passenger,” whose addictive opening riff is one of the best of the late seventies. Iggy himself may be the passenger in the song, but surely he wants us to realize we’re each the passenger at some point. For as much free will as we may or may not have, there’s always an element of surprise to either fear or to look forward to, but always to anticipate. No? Fuck, I’m not sure. There is promise in some of the other songs, like “Some Weird Sin” and “Neighborhood Threat,” but nothing much else really sticks with me here. There are two classics and a slew of skippable songs, plus the unnecessarily long “Turn Blue.” Some albums get three stars because of how vanilla they are. This album gets three stars because of how all over the place it is.
Solid. I recognized some tracks. Idk if I'd come back to this often. I should learn more about him.
Enjoyable but Iggy Pop isn't entirely my thing.
It gives me kinda rebelious 16 years old teenage vibe. 8/10 bass is everything
Some great stuff here but I wasn't in the mood for the sort of chaos Iggy looked to unleash
Ok album. #2 song is my least favorite, I find it annoying. 3.5 if I could do it
2.5 rounded up. It was OKAY
Fun album. Especially the hits.
Loppua kohde vähä huononi, mutta paree ku oletin!
Songs I like. Lust for Life - reminds me to Just For Laughs comedy club in the 90s, since they used that song before the show started. Then used again in Trainspotting. The Passenger
Strong start. Better than I expected. Success is not good. Weaker second half for sure
Really cool record with some great songs. Favourite tracks: Lust For Life (obviously), Some Weird Sin, The Passenger, Success. Least favourite track: Fall In Love With Me
Decent
see 7/10
A couple mega hit songs that are really amazing. Several other solid songs. And a couple dogs. But overall, an enjoyable way to start the day.
I remember parts of The Idiot but none of this one
Much more melodic and listenable than the Stooges debut. Good improvement, Iggy. The Passenger and title track are legitimately strong pop.
Perfect album to start the day with. The first track Lust For Life literally gives you a lust for life. The Passenger is amazing as well. I also learned some new songs from this album. The last three tracks are happily living their life now in my playlist. If I could give three and a half stars, I would, but I sadly can't.
lust for life is a good track, the rest can be summed up as "this is fine but not particularly interesting to me". this includes the passenger, not sure why that gets the hype it does
Okay
Straight out of Iggy's "A bit thirsty" period. I mean its still Iggy, but its a bit sus in places.
Eh
Some pretty cool guitar parts. I was expecting basic punk riffs but pretty cool. Don’t think I’d go out of my way again for this album apart from the hits.
Just ok. I don't really get the hype surrounding Iggy Pop's music.
Listened Before? N I struggled with this one. It took me several days to get around to listening to it because I didn't want to. No particular reason other than I just really hate Lust for Life the song. Anyway it turned out okay. Decent punk album from the 70s. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: The Passenger
It just wasn’t really my jam overall.
Remember I mentioned here that I first got into David Bowie with the Let's Dance and Tonight records. I didn't know so much about Iggy Pop until much later. Hearing Lust For Life had me boggling as to why half the songs from Tonight were just covers from Iggy Pop. It may be they were close comrades with no clear boundaries for collaboration versus plagiarization. It's also clear Bowie was part of the production of this record and some of it draws from the funky first half of Low. I can't go back and hear this record before I heard Tonight, so it's difficult to sort out the association and to have an unbiased impression.
Neat. But definitely music for a different era, it seems to me.
Iggy's lust for life seemed to wane as the album went on, as did my enthusiasm. Three downward trends out of five 📉📉📉
3.5
Typical old music
Hressilegt stöff. Alltaf gaman að heyra lögin tvö sem David Bowie gaf seinna út, þetta eru svo allt öðruvísi útgáfur.
This is basically how I imagined David Bowie would sound before I listened to any David Bowie. It’s fine.
Pretty ok, but some really questionable lyrics in Turn Blue.
Not better than "The Idiot". Still has some really good songs like "The Passenger" (even if I prefer the Siouxsie version more) and the title track, but then there's also stuff like the song "Turn Blue" which is... something. I appreciate the strangeness at least, even if the song sucks ass. The moral of the story: Don't do drugs or you'll randomly wake up in Germany one day. Also stop smiling at me.
It was ok. It’s quite hard to judge without knowing the context in which this album is on the list.
There's something off about the album cover that I love. Besides that, this was a pretty alright album. I liked the random speaking parts in some songs. Fave track(s): Some Weird Sin, Fall In Love With Me
Enjoyable listen. Drumming reminds me of John Bonham, and the singing/writing of Jim Morrison and occasionally of Plant. Parody? Or respect? Either way, it gets a high 3/5 from me; I would listen again.
Standouts: Lust for Life Others: Sixteen, The Passenger, Tonight, Success Rating: 3.5
I hadn't realised just how many Bowieism similarities there are in Iggys music. Certainly a few tracks in there that have stood the test of time. Quite a good album that has aged well. I can't take too much of Iggy in one go though.
Enjoyed this one!
Just OK. I am onto the two tracks. I knew I had again I didn’t hear anything particularly special. A little bit agitating and probably not my genre.
‘Twas alright. Surprisingly poppy and peppy which is nice but overall not totally my vibe. 6/10
Decent album, few songs I wasn’t a huge fan of
Pretty average by todays standards. Definitely some good songs in there but a few snoozers, too.
It was fine.
Unique sound, up tempo
Some classic hits but not something that I love.
Sure, he’s a creepy looking bag of skin. Sure, he wrote a song about boning a 13 year old girl (which was taken off of Spotify). Sure, this entire album was primarily Bowie music that Mr. Pop sang over. But hey, it ain’t that bad. Could have been a 4 if I was in a better mood. He’s the kind of weird I’d want to see live.
He's a weirdo, i like it
It's a nice sounding album. Not sure if I agree with the lust tho
Some solid, interesting music on this album, though sometimes the vocals weren't cutting it. You can definitely hear Bowie's influence (though Bowie does it much better IMO) and The Passenger is a fantastic song.
This album exists. That's about all I have to say about it. Not bad, not good. Just there
old school vibes
7/10 fuvol
ziggy iggy
Pretty good listen graded on how much I enjoyed it I would give it 3 but including impact on music it would be close to a five the fact that it came out in 1967 is pretty amazing
Not my favorite, still good
The second of IPs collaboration with Bowie ( though you be fair the DB album Tonight also has a lot of IP) and it shows. In not a massive fan of IPs drawl but there are some solid songs. As a student the Passenger was a indie disco mainstay. I feel it flags a bit on the 2bd side
Upbeat version of Lou Reed’s Transformer.
Eh. Wasn't bad. Kinda tired of these rock albums though. I know they are influential and what not but I'd like to get other genres.
im so tired 2day i have nothing witty to say fav tracks: The Passenger, Tonight
There were a lot of songs on this album that I recognized from commercials and movies, but had no idea where they came from. It was ok! I might revisit some songs
It’s giving Bowie but not as good. Like Bowie without the 🤩💖✨💅🏻 or the vibes. Or the personality. Still like it though. Success is good. Hated turn blue. Was okay?.
Iggy does some weird stuff but good.
Sounds too much like David Bowie. Not a surprise given he co-wrote a bunch of the songs and plays in the band. Fine but not special.
A more ambitious album than his earlier work which is ahead of its time when you even think of 2000s indie rock music. However, while I’ll remember the sound, the lack of memorable songs makes it less impactful after first listen.
Gonna come back to this one, seems like a grower (maybe becomes a 4 after another listen or two). I like the Iggy Bowie sound and 'Fall In Love With Me' has some Lou Reed vibes.
Brimming with energy, and the title track stands out even more. But... Each of the tracks, on their own, sounds a bit too simple to me; like they're made of a single riff that's on repeat.
Están las dos famosas, y luego Some Weird Sin y Fall in Love With You, que no están mal.
Liked it. Can see where The Strokes got a lot of their influences from.
There's not a lot that can really be said about this record. The hits, 'Lust For Life' and 'The Passenger', are obviously timeless hard rock classics. 'Some Weird Sin' and 'Tonight' (despite its overly glaring Bowie involvement) are both highlights as deep cuts. There are simply some really forgettable songs surrounding these highlights however. The mixing on 'Sixteen' is a complete mess, there is hardly any room to breath between each instrument. The tune isn't that great either. 'Success' is the most lyrically repetitive track here and sadly makes of a really boring 4 and a half minutes. While I did excuse 'Tonight' earlier, I can't do the same for 'Turn Blue', because fuck me this sounds so blatantly Bowie it's not funny. It's got a few great songs, a few more duds, but overall it's solid. The lightest and featheriest of 3's for this one.
Whoa, first thing to say...and this probably old news, but I've just realised that Are You Gonna Be My Girl by Jet is pretty close to a straight lift from Lust For Life, bless them. And having just got over the fact that Chas and Dave appear on Slim Shady, I discover that the rhythm section here are brothers and the sons of Soupy Sales a comedian who was all over the sixties and seventies. First thing, straight up the drumming on this record is pretty damn good: great drumming maketh the great rock and roll record. Second thing is, he's got a shirt on the cover, not an good augur for what's to come, a beshirted Iggy won't come out howling. The two big tracks are classics, enough said. Tonight and Turn Blue could come off any 70's Bowie record, Sixteen wants to bust out but you get the feeling Iggy is being held back, you just want him to take his shirt off and shout some shit.
Some good stuff here, and I’d happily listen if someone put it on. Interesting to hear the original of Tonight (I was vaguely familiar with the 1984 Bowie version; the original has a lot more grit!) and to really listen to other tracks I’d heard but not really listened closely to. But I probably won’t pull it off the (virtual) shelf again myself, so 3.5 stars.
Over this whole experiment, Iggy crops up probably more than any other individual lead singer (so far anyway). This is one of the better outings, feels pretty together. Bit weird hearing the tone of his voice vary from bass to treble, but all just about works. Also as always, points knocked off for noncery, which is particularly noticeable in this one.
nice album. passenger is an insanely iconic song. Other songs here were nice too.
I liked certain songs more than others, and I recognized one of them.
Obviously the two big singles are amazing, but the rest was only fine for me. I wouldn't turn it off, but I wouldn't choose to put it on.
A very good album built around 3 great songs.
Can feel the David Bowie influence on this one and there is enough that is unique with it that it doesn't come across as some contrived, wannabe production. With that said, I think the raw, oozing, sounds of his efforts with the Stooges feel more genuine. Making this one seem just a bit tame comparatively.
vocals are pretty hit or miss at times. 3
Interesting kind of punk sounding, lust for life is the only song I recognized. It was ok playing in the background while doing something
Iggy pop is a bit of a bop
It would be cooler if his name was ciggy instead of iggy because this album sounds like how the smoking circle outside a dive bar smells. 3 stars
Its alright
A vibrant and at times jubilant sounding album, with subject matter that is almost entirely anything but. The production and the energy of the album lives right on the outer edge of the uncanny valley of pop, that draws you in with its quirk and curiosity.
Liked it!
The Passenger is the clear highlight
It's alright but relatively samey
Some of the songs were good, like The Passenger. Overall the album was fun to listen to.
Not knowing the Bowie connection until after I listened and read the Wiki I was amused that while I was listening I was thinking it was too bad he had to compete against Bowie. Still a bit distortion-heavy on the vocals
Some nice riffs but a bit drawn out in places.
Having listened to the Idiot earlier this week, this is a big step down from that. It doesn't have much atmosphere and the production is a lot less interesting.
Possibly not as good as The Idiot, but still great.
Title track is a fucking bop. The Passenger is fucking bop. The rest I can do without.
Nice
Interesting chose after Transformer yesterday, what with both having a Bowie connection. However, this seems to have more of Bowie’s thumbprints all over it, sounding in large parts like one of David’s albums from around that time. Iggy himself feels a bit swamped here. The opener and closer are fantastic. As are The Passenger and Some Weird Sin, which sounds a lot more like Iggy than much of this set. But the other half of these selections suffer from not sharing more of the Stooges gene pool. I love Bowie, but this is not meant to be a Bowie album, and I feel like I am missing out on something as a consequence.
One of the founders of punk Lust for life is okay - repetitive The Passenger uses the 4 chord progression - most plays on spotify unsurprisingly - also repetitive (just uses same 4 chords) Tonight and Some weird sin also not bad
Love Iggy.
Way ahead of its time in some songs. Some Weird Sin, The Passenger, Neighborhood Threat Also, is a pedophile.
Didn't listen to the whole thing will get back to it, feels nostalgic even though I didn't listen to this when I was younger.
need to listen to more intently, less distracted eventually
Pretty low key for Iggy. It was alright but I'm not running back.
Great. 3.5/5
pretty neat very bowie inspired 3.5
I like it. Pretty good
