Fav song: Double-O FALLOUT
Good set but not insanely good.
Solid album. Nothing too notable but there's that clear sign that Basie was master of his craft and brought together only the best musicians for His orchestra. It was kind of nice putting it on and just having good swing playing while I was doing stuff. I'd honestly enjoy buying this as a record and just throwing it on.
Listens: 4 Standout Tracks: None I liked this. Reminded me of what my grand father used to listen to; this, and classical music. I appreciate how by 1958, with the Cold War kicking into gear, that the Atomic bomb had entered the zeitgeist and was something that people were talking about, using nuclear explosions on album covers and calling themselves "Atomic". I liked this upbeat, focused swing style of Jazz more than I enjoyed Weather Report and even Bill Evans Trio. This was a hoppin good time.
This was fantastic! I love big band and Count Basie and his Orchestra sure delivered. The music was consistently smooth and was so emotive despite the lack of lyrics. Too often instrumental albums don't distinguish between songs enough, but not this album. Really, just a delightful, fun, and easy listen.
Wow!
just swag as hell
The brass section of this big band orchestra was a bit too loud in this album.I just couldn't hear it loud,it really annoyed me.Overall i always enjoy Count Basie's albums.I think it's the second album that i rate from him and his orchestra. Favourites:Double O. 4/5.
I could always listen to Count Basie... I vaguely remember learning he was "from" KC (where I spent much of my youth). He wasn't technically, but had a KC era and I didn't think anything cool came from there...
Threw this on several times while dining and looking for the right tunes. Very enjoyable.
Dope
Ca, ça trompette bien.
Beautiful and fun
Bold choice for an album cover, but Basie delivers with an explosive opening number. This was full of fun and entertaining music that certainly led into more great music for my work day.
8/10
I know it’s my own personal taste, but I would rather have near 70 year old dance music than that of the last 10 years. It’s just more organic, has more feel and emotion for me. It just screams cool. 4 Star
I had heard of Count Basie and his orchestra from their guest appearance on The Intro And The Outro by The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band, where they played the triangle. Let's hear what they can do with a full album. Quite a lot, as it turns out. Some very nice big band jazz here. Call me a philistine, but this kind of easy-to-listen-to jazz is much more enjoyable to me than the stuff which is more about pushing possibilities and boundaries.
Boowop zoobity bop
Basie is classic and never gets old
Old school cool big band swing. Lovely
Jazz I can get behind - genuinely beautiful! The start really punches your ear drums!
Classic!
The Atomic Mr. Basie - Count Basie & His Orchestra While I'm not a fan of big band orchestras there is plenty on this album that focuses on the genius of Count Basie as his unique piano playing abilities are more pronounced and not so overwhelmed by his orchestra. His arrangements are, as always, excellent.
An album that I was not aware of before but one that I can definitely call great.
I really liked this one! Big bombastic orchestral arrangements, copious use of brass and piano, very vibe-y.
REminded of The DOors
Very energetic, but also calmer gems in here. Loved listening on Headphones.
From a bit before my time, and the cover art notwithstanding, I really enjoyed this.
beep bop perfect vibe
This was a nice listen. A bit wild at times. My students thought it was bad but they are stupid.
It started sounding the same at some point😂 but it’s nice
Pretty cool! Some restrained songs, some bigger ones, the recording sounds really authentic. Liked it!
Lush and vibrant. Made for a toe-tapping Sunday night.
Big band jazz is not something I would listen to on a regular basis but there is no denying the talent of the musicians and the fantastic orchestration. I don't give it 5 stars only because it's not really my style.
Nice jazz
Big band swing jazz fun
Sunday Morning Big Band Music!
An insanely cool album cover for a big band orchestra. Never really listened to or thought about any of Count Basie's work, but after listening to the podcast, A History of Rock Music in 500 Songs (check it out, fellas), it's not an overstatement to say that rock and roll wouldn't be what it is/was without Count Basie. A lot of his earlier work was incredibly influential the jazz musicians and R&B singers that would begin creating some of the early proto-rock and roll songs of the 40s and 50s. The Atomic Mr. Basie feels like the last word from the era of big band orchestras that dominated American music up until the birth of rock and roll, and it's a last word worth hearing.
8.3 - very good album, no bad songs. Splanky (9), Duet (8.5), and Double-O (8.5) were my favorites. Teddy the Toad (7.8) was the lowest ranked.
siento q es musica de cine mudo, lindas, me gustaria escucharlo de fondo en un bar
So much fun
Banger instrumental album. The instrumentation is very impressive. Also, this is the perfect fall time, hanging around the house while I cook a meal music
9/10
Love it. Big band big energy. Hits real hard out of the gate with “the kid from reels bank” and also really dug “spanky”. Makes me want to swing dance!
This was quite nice, notably more accessible to my uncultured ears than Bitches Brew or the Koln Concert.
Jazz is cool. It's albums like this that remind me of that belief that I have. This album's very good. It's not a masterpiece or anything, but it's just a lot of fun. It's got this swinging big-band style that I really enjoy. The opening track just hits you with awesome, fast-paced horns right off the bat and I love that. The album lasts for a respectable amount of time. It's not the most gripping jazz album ever, but I enjoyed it all throughout. I've got to give props to both Count Basie's orchestra and Neal Hefti's arrangements. Good job! Great jazz album. Light 4/5.
Didn't expect to like this as much as I did - jazz usually isn't my thing. It was great to listen to while I was working/doing lab experiments.
What an opener or a song. It set my expectations a bit too high for this album though. If it had struck a better balance between these frenetic and softer songs it would've been a 5 star album.
Basie is based. Phenomenal album, oh how I wish I could hear this live. I don’t think I’ll return to this very much as it is a very specific vibe I don’t feel too often, but I enjoyed every song and the album as a whole.
Jó volt, Lil' Darlin kedvenc
This one doesn't fall in the bin of "mention the book in the blurb so it probably sucks" I like it. It's pretty late big band swing. A little anachronistic, but I was around in the 50s to know.
Jazzy Piano
Pretty great. Classy
Exhilarating!
I haven’t explored more since I first listened to this years ago but I really like this bran of Big Band. Atomic is a great adjective for how dynamic and explosive the pieces can be, and it has aged super well
ich will ine jazzbar, aber so ine richtigi, und dete rauch ich au es zigi (oder probiers zumindest)
Really great. 4.5
Really good, I have never listened to Count Basie before and enjoyed it, overall a 4 star album for me.
Goede jazz
Top-tier background music
10/10 album cover. Tan & I listened to a lot of this type of jazz, call it “Tower of Terror queue music.” So I still can’t really listen to this stuff without feeling a wave of grief. I’ll give it a three because I did love the atmosphere of this, but this is a DNF for me.
More instrumental like this please I now know why there’s a Count Basie theater in Red Bank
Really fun.
A good album. Nothing special, but still fun to listen
awesome!
Nice
8,3
Pleasant listening while I made dinner
This is perfect.
This was delightful. Silky, smooth compositions. Made me want to take my best girl out on the town for dancing & martinis. Maybe smack the Cigarette waitress on the ass after getting a pack of Lucky Strikes. Seriously good album. 4
Great representation of the Basie sound with some killer solos from Lockjaw Davis. But honestly this one was probably picked for the sick album art.
I like this kind of jazz!
Vibrant music - decent listen
Good classic orchestral jazz album, will be listening to it in the winter just before christmas
I like this.
I think I like jazz… a lot…
It's kinda hot. Big band swing and all that. Some of it blends in with each other and fades into background music, but that isn't necessarily bad. I do like me some jazz and this had some really nice passages. Very enjoyable album - not the best in the world, but a solid 4.
Smokin' Fast paced. Very good - 4
What an amazing album. Why did this music every go away. It's just fantastic.
Great album!
!!!
This was pretty good! Very high-energy swing/big band record with a couple nice slower songs mixed in. Kinda like the last gasp for big band music before it was relegated to the dustbin of history. An enjoyable listen! 4/5
A fantastic big-band album. I do wonder if DGD’s song “Count Bassy” is in reference him!
This album from Count Basie is all instrumental, which is slightly unusual for big band music. That is good from my point of view, because many times vocals detract from the instrumental stuff. Since these arrangements were done by Neil Hefti, naturally they have a jazzy feel to them. Even so, this album could have come from the 1940s. Good music, but not quite up to a five-star level.
Jazz.
muy bueno
Loved the big band and swing side of this! It's the kind of jazz I prefer
Enjoyed this. A lot of the times, I like the music more than voices, so this was great.
Splashes of colour and excitement. Refreshing, like big band musical sound without giving me a headache. Its jazz flair give it a sound it makes me want to go back to it like a vacation to a destination unlike any other.
Unexpected but good
Not quite as explosive as I was expecting, but it got two listens and I enjoyed it enough for four stars.
I would give this album 5 stars based on the album art alone, but I that is unfair. So I'll give it the earned rating of 4 stars
Instrumental may not be my thing but this is great!! Really fun big band stuff, I can appreciate it in small doses like this album.
Pretty much perfect for a swing album. Basie's as good as it gets.
In January 2021 I only gave this a 3.5, but I really enjoyed it on relisten so it deserves a 4. I'm not well versed in jazz for it to be higher, though, or to provide a more thoughtful review.
Oh boy. Jazz again. At least that's some vivid cover art: none of this generic Miles Davis with a trumpet stuff. Listening notes: -Wow I can tell that this is different than other Jazz (such is the bar). So lively and orchestral. Maybe a Jazz album can really impress me. -Maybe it's that I've been taking swing dance classes, but this feels very fun! -I still don't have an ear for good v. bad jazz (and I know my opinions of what is danceable only get me so far in the genres where I feel qualified to comment; plenty of bad danceable music out there). -It's going to be much harder to form an opinion if I have to do so without lyrics. Review: Jazz is always gonna be hard to review for me, but this big band stuff is a lot more up my alley than the more rhythmically abstract stuff we had earlier. There's good energy in this stuff! 4 stars. Maybe I'd bump it up if I got really into jazz. And maybe I'll try more to do so.
I've often been a bit more dismissive of the jazz we've been served in this project. But this one caught me off-guard in a way that could keep me engaged. It may be because this is more swingy than some of the other albums and have leaned in to the big bandness of it all, but I enjoyed it. Splanky was a favorite, but maybe because its the one that's stuck around in the culture the best.
Good big band seing era album from the legendary Count Basie.
Decent for big band and swing
The cover is a very bold move, but the contents lived up to it. I really enjoyed this.
I’m going to give this four stars for the title alone. The music is fine, sort of that big bandy stuff you’d hear in the background of bewitched
Ganz nett zum nebenbei hören
Classic swing. Good band good tunes.
chill
3.8 This is probably as big as big band gets. Thought it sounded great. I would have to think, next to no one is composing new big band music nowadays. That would take some talent. Shout out to the The Old-disc Jockey, John Worthington, on CKUA, who recently passed away. That was a great program.
A great jazz album, especially if you’re into big bands. It’s classy yet full of life and energy, impressively well-ordered and coordinated. All musicians are equally good. It’s a tad too old-school for my taste, but considering Count Basie was active as early as the mid-30s, it’s amazing to see how well he evolved with his time.
Like many of the people on this list, I had heard of Count Basie before but hadn't heard his music. I really enjoyed it. Instrumental jazz that is nice to have on in the background.
Fucking shit yeah. Top tier big band shit
Duet // After Supper // Midnite Blue // Lil’ Darlin’ 3.5/5
Very good jazz album, would’ve been perfect if it was organised as in the songs leading into each other matched the same energy but it did feel disjointed in some places
enjoyed
Like Louis Prima without vocals. Great energy, great jazz.
Favourites: The Kid from Red Bank, After Supper, Flight of the Foo Birds, Teddy the Toad, Midnite Blue, Lil' Darlin'
Pleasantly surprised. Solid coffee shop vibes
I like Big Band music but I am not knowledgeable or discerning enough to really tell most things apart or to know who I am listening to. I find it enjoyable when I do listen but I rarely seek it out or choose it to play it. I certainly have heard of Count Basie and this was at the level of enjoyability that I would expect from him.
Great big band album
Really solid and fun to listen to. Full range of lively danceable and slow chill out music. Not blowing my mind which keeps it out of 5 star range but very good.
I’m feeling Billie Holiday on this. Too much damn brass! When it’s unbridled, it’s overwhelming. But when Basie reins it in and lets the rhythm section lead? Divine! Midnite Blue, Splanky and Li’l Darlin’ are pure sexy noir magic.
Love it!
I haven’t listened to much Count Basie in my jazz ventures but will be listening to more.
Beautiful big band sound. Easy to see how this music was the sound of the greatest generation.
this is like, the jazz I pretend to play when I make fun off jazz
Never liked big band as much as later styles, but this was much more in line with what I typically enjoy about jazz.
No wonder they call him atomic with all this trumpet blasting Yeah this some good shit
Total energy even in the laid back tracks. Raw power with a huge group. I know we love genres and labels but I don’t think there is an emotional difference between this and The Stooges. Both are muscular and assertive. Maybe Basie isn’t try to pick a fight but it’s definitely wild and he does want you think they are badass. Even though there is a full orchestra you can still tell that there is a swagger that is coming from one person.
Great album to start the say with.
Nice jazz.
Great listen, they combine very well the compositions to make it an accessible and easy listen, but at the same time keep it ambitious and interesting. I imagine that back in 1958 this was a much more groundbreaking record than it is today, but it remains an excellent jazz record, with great arrangements, very good performances and a cohesive project. The songs are all pretty good, and I liked how they ordered the album to combine upbeat and more calm tracks. If I had to pick, I'd say my favourites were "The Kid from Red Bank", "Flight of the Foo Birds" and "Midnite Blue". "Splanky" and "Whirly-Bird" were also great.
3.8
Sick album cover. The horns right off the bat on the first track really do feel explosive. After forty minutes, you’re left with a wonderful collection of songs ranging in mood, albeit, not the most groundbreaking stuff here, still I can’t complain. 4/5
A very chill, jazzy, walking bass type of hazy speakeasy vibe. Very nice.
Cool jazzy album, did greatly enjoy the vibe and it was quite fun!
A good example of a genre that also happens to be really good. 4/5
An enjoyable big band jazz album. They don't make music like this anymore. Standouts: None really, it was all pretty good Rating: 4/5
In years past, big band was my go to for jazz. In recent years, I have become more fond of the smaller ensembles a la Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, etc. But this was nice to go back to. It might not be my favorite form of jazz, but it is still a lot of fun.
Surprisingnly jazzy and chill. 4/5
Actually heard this one from Jason’s list. Nice and jazzy
Обложка громкая, конечно.
Eddie Davies is worth the price of entry for his fabulous saxophoning.
I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. I typically don’t reach for Jazz, but this was smooth and had its moments. Some of our film scores just would be the same without splashes of this genre done well. Rounding up because I think it’s above average Jazz. 3.5/5
I really enjoyed this. Most likely due to its heavy swing and big-band sounds instead of just plain old jazz. A great soother with cocktail in hand.
This was a genuinely enjoyable listen, good instrumentation, a great groove, completely enjoyed this.
I was expecting something completely different based on the artist’s name and the album artwork, maybe hip-hop or funk. I was clearly way off, but I definitely enjoyed this album. Very nice swing/big band sound made for excellent background music while working. I clearly knew nothing about the artist, but I would enjoy a deeper dive into their catalog, assuming I remember to do so.
This was alot of fun. I don't think I can listen to Count Basie all day everyday, but this was top notch and a mushroom cloud album cover, whaat!!
Great album. 4.5/5
Solid big band album
Ok hear me out...I watch a lot of baseball games, baseball documentaries, etc. The whole time I was listening to this album I couldn't stop thinking about baseball legends playing ball back in the day. I can honestly say I haven't set out to listen to Big Band music before but I enjoyed every second of this.
OOOH ORCHESTRAS..... i will have to relisten to this....
Big band, atomic mushroom cloud, a good mix of high-energy fast paced tracks and slow, sometimes melancholy tracks. As a fan of Fallout, this is right up my alley.
Just can’t get over how tight the band is on this album - the crazy runs both saxes and brass do in such perfect matching tones and lightening speeds. Always in awe
Always good to hear a great big band and this is a fantastic album..though the cover art is a little distressing for these times.
pou pi dou da dla di pa dou
Authentique bioune d'époque!
C'est ben bon mais j'étais quand même tanné avant la fin. 3.75 étoiles
Incredible album !
Pretty good
Jazz
I'm glad that my knowledge of Count Bassie has now expanded beyond obscure jokes from early seasons of the Simpsons. I'm a big Jazz lover, but I've never really dipped my toe in the Big Band water. The music is delightful and the album cover is absolutely monstrous in the best way.
Not what I was expecting from the name or cover, but I like the jazzy big band.
I'd usually be dismissive of an instrumental on this list, but I really enjoyed this!
Some nice jazz. Would be nice to put on in the background while I work.
Some good Jazz
I have heard his name 100's of times and I am sure I have heard many of his songs- but strictly as background music. This is the first time I ever 'listened" to it. I like it. The jazz infusion into the swing style was quite cool.
Amazing album. Great from start to finish, if not a little repetitive.
das isch ja es explosivs albumcover😆😆😆 the kid from red bank isch so es richtig FLINKS lied, v.a. s klavier! duet isch chli langsam aber find d trumpete super POAH de schluss vo whirley-bird GAHT ABBBBVBB allgemein gfalled mier die schnellere lieder chli besser aber mier gfallts megaa de drummer hets au sooo hert im griff VIAAAA
Old school jazz pop. Refreshing
Great album, easy listening. Not a huge big band guy (without vocals at least) but enjoyed it nonetheless.
J'adore ! Je suis emporté dès les premières notes. Un peu répétitif si on écoute d'une oreille seulement, #jazzvie
Quality music but not my cup of tea.
Good tunes. Enjoyed this.
This is an old one but a good one. I've heard a few of these before in various soundtracks or videos, but never listened to this album all the way through. I'm glad I did though, since these were a great vibe and so lovely to listen to.
Tight. Really listenable.
I really like the more upbeat songs on this, wasn’t as big a fan on the more slower tempo ones as they felt quite repetitive with the same baseline but that wasn’t the case for a lot of these songs, my favourites were pretty much the entire album but there were some standouts: the first one, fight of the foo birds, teddy the road and Whirly-bird. Overall 7/10.
Cool beans!
Big brass sound! Looney Tunes vibes! Old movie feel!
Big band, big sound, big good.
Love me some jazz and this couldn’t brighten any day
Really fun and jazzy. Some incredible keys
Great start to the challenge, really enjoyed the big band jazz and was previously unaware of this artist. Havent listened to the genre much at all but will keep this around.
E ovo već može! ✨ Baš fini mix jazza, cabareta i swinga. Finjak! 4/5, 7/10
Very cool
I really liked this. Listened on a roadtrip and this was kinda silly roadtrip music but i liked it.
Awesome big band jazz from one of the best to ever do it. It's light when it wants to be, the brass slam when they want to slam, and it grooves all the damn time. Really great record and love the Red Bank NJ represent.
Very uplifting, charming and amusing. I won't take seriously an album that makes me think of old cartoons and feels like they were having fun.
Yeah this was cool, a nice swing record. I usually like my jazz a bit more weird but it was pleasant.
Great vibe. Classic stuff.
I dug it
Was real good. Wish I had more to say except I really liked it.
First Jazz album from this project that I would say I actually like.
Incredibly fun to listen to with enough musical diversity from track to track to keep things fresh front to back.
Just listen to the brass
Fun album! Highlights: Whirly-Bird, Flight of the Foo Birds
Really good! Super funky, enjoyed the focus of different instruments in different songs. Loved the softer songs mixed in too Favourites: The Kid from Red Bank, Flight of the Foo Birds, Whirly-bird, midnight blue, Lil Darlin’
Bombastic swing, super jazzy, nice flow, great horns . Standout tracks: Kid from Red Bank, Flight of the Foo Birds, Whirly-Bird, Midnite Blue (sampled by Blu)
An enjoyable album that showcases some great arrangements and a lot of talented players. What struck me most about listening to this album was that I realized I had actually played a number of these charts in various jazz bands over the years. Really shows that they are the staples of the genre. And while it is a genre that I like, I don’t know that I would be reaching for this album as my first listen.
Very enjoyable, favourite song was supper but the whole album is so good!
Dokaz da se i swing jazz fazon može slušati kad je dobro odsviran, a ovo nije samo dobro nego odlično. Posebno s obzirom da je bilo prije skoro 70 godina.
Very chill album, would definitely use for study or homework time or just general vibes
Fet, og fin inngang til jazz som ikke bare er peiskos og rødvin.
Nitimen FTW! Eller er det Reiseradioen?
Splanky!
This probably isn't the best weekend album, but I was feeling the big band jazz all weekend. There is different pace throughout the tracks which keeps things fresh. I loved the trading and individual piano part in Lil' Darlin' that follows with a harp. It was entertaining just trying to pull out each instrument from the background. The recording themselves are also fantastic. They mustve done some serious remastering in the 90s to save this from 1958 standards.
I was excited to hear this, I have a history with swing dance, and I wanted to hear what a bona-fide big band swing album released in the era of hard bop, modal jazz and free jazz sounds like. I am pleased to say it sounds very good, this is effectively a perfect swing album, with incredible performances and great pacing. Most importantly, this release captures the joy of swing as an artform very nicely. I’m kind of torn on what to score this, but I’ll settle on a 4, although it’s a 5 if I’m listening to it while dancing.
I would probably go nuts over this live but this style of jazz never quite hits the same way for me on vinyl. Still a banger though.
80% Best: The Kid from Red Bank; Flight of the Foo Birds; Whirly-Bird Must-Hear? Maybe
I don’t know anything about jazz. But this sounds great.
Przyjemne, oldschoolowe granie z prawdziwymi instrumentami. Aż chce się tańczyć. Uwielbiam taką wirtuozerię i zabawę dźwiękiem. Wszystko jest tak nasycone, że wokal jest zupełnie zbędny. 8/10
Instrumental albums like this tend to be less my thing, but he's pretty bombastic!
Now this is jazz. Great listen, I loved this.
Some more extremely tasty swing. That double bassist was putting in work! :theWildest:
A really fun listen overall!
From the moment I saw the album cover I knew this would be a fun one, and it did not disappoint. Every song has a different mood, the slower moments feel classy, and they always pick right back up with some type of fun and energetic (dare I say 💥 explosive) swing. This is some of the best jazz we've had on the list. Bravo Mr Basie 👏
One of the easiest 4s ever. This album so clearly sounds like people having a fantastic time and I love it. Good balance of slower and faster songs and my compliments to the guy playing the upright bass.
I liked it, seemed like good big band stuff Will I listen to again: 34%
One more time
This is hard bop... that bops!
Some really cool old jazz tracks on this one. Super fun and probably great for dancing. Feels like something you’d hear at a vintage party. 7/10
Hearing this album made me wonder how life was during this time. I imagined the fashion and swagger men had listening to music like this. While I didn't particularly like the more fast paced tracks the ones with a slower beast really had me in a mood. I never listened to a Count Basie album but I wouldn't count it listening to another.
The musicians on this album played their hearts out and it shows. What an introduction to big band for someone that hasn't really listened to it all that much. Lil Darlin is a beautiful song and is incredibly romantic.
Regal but swingin’
Interesting start...
Great album!
Great energy and super fun from start to finish. As a bonus, best album art I’ve seen from the 50s.
que experiência puta que pariu o album inteiro me impressionou 9/10
classic jazz! whirly-bird
Listened to this a bunch at work, would listen again, very boppy and got me in the mood to work!
This was a fun way to go around the house and do my chores this morning. I've never been the biggest fan of swing jazz, but this was a really diverse, fun example of the genre. I am incredibly impressed with how great the recordings sound nearly 70 years later. There is some fantastic talent on this album, and I'm very glad to now be familiar with Mr Basie. 8/10
This was the bomb
Great swing album that doesn't rely on singing but portrays the actual music behind all of it. It's just that more songs could stick out.
Big band music is always just quality. Such phenomenal levels of playing. A full vibe all on its own.
crraaazzy banger ich liebe jazi aber kann mich an keinen song erinnern
Tom & Jerry type beat
Big band classic. Pretty much the essential swing big band album.
With the album cover and a release year of 1958 I wasn't sure what to expect but boy it was a great surprise. Not something I'd normally listen to but it was great.
I like jazz but I'm a super novice. I don't know much but some stuff is real nice. This is a real nice. Just fun and eclectic but not unapproachable. Honestly perfect kind for me. A million great little runs. The whole thing is great but u catch tiny peices every handful of seconds that are interesting and cool. Real nice. I'm not sure if it gets full points but it's so close if not.
Really enjoyed this one even though I don't usually listen to jazz, so I can't even really say why I liked it so much. It just sounded great. I've never heard of this band/group before, but I'll definitely be checking out more of their stuff if their other albums sound this good.
Fun but need to be in the right mood
Within genre - 4.0 Listenability - 4.0 Likelihood I'll return - 3.5 Average - 3.83 Songs have variety and interest
Best swing album I’ve ever listened to. Favorite Track: After Supper
I’d heard of Count Basie before, but had never really been introduced to his work before this. Typically it takes me a bit to really get into a jazz album, and this was no different, in that I couldn’t differentiate the songs in my mind super well at first, but by the third listen or so as I was trying to pick out my favorites I was seeing the vision and I began to love a good number of the songs. Not a single song on here I would say is “bad”, although a couple are still a little forgettable. In general, atomic is an excellent description. Favorite track: Li’l Darlin’, though it wasn’t easy to choose
Smooth jazz, setting a cozy mood
Fun album
Fun jazz. Enjoyed!
Fun, like being in a 60s spy film
Album 729 of 1001 Count Basie & His Orchestra - The Atomic Mr Basie (1958) Rating : 4 / 5 As I've said, I love my horns and this big-band jazz does not disappoint.
Pretty cool! Verrrry clean brass.
This album was great. Really made me imagine I was back in time. Simple yet beautiful. It sounded like the 50s which was fun. I think sometimes it starts to sound a little repetitive, but it wasn't boring at all. Truly a great listen and my favorite jazz album so far. Count Basie is a legend and deserves all the credit he gets. Actual rating...3.5 Liked Songs: "The Kid from Red Bank" , "Flight of the Foo Birds" , "Double-O" , "Whirly-Bird" , "Fantail"
liked songs: The Kid from Red Bank, Flight of the Foo Birds, Double-O, Whirly-Bird, Splanky Solid. 4
Good swing music. Really gives the space to different instruments. Overall good but not so excellent that I would rate it 5 stars.
Refreshing.
Wasn't what I was expecting. But good high energy. A fun listen
[7/10] They weren’t kidding this band is big
Really good, enjoyed it a lot
Excellent. Roars with lively energy and simmers in cool.
This was great! I’ve never listened to Basie before and I wish I’d found him earlier.
Cool!
Nice! Hoppin’!
Sometimes an album just fits your vibe, you know? I was so happy when I drew this today because after a few days of 90s alt rock on the trot this was exactly what I wanted. It’s really irresistible swing, perfect for my after-work Friday evening chill.
A masterclass in swing at any tempo. Fond memories of performing Splanky and L'il Darlin (and maybe Whirlybird?) with the BU Big Band.
1. After supper 2. Midnite blue 3. Flight of the foo birds/splanky
Not my usual cup of tea, but pretty good background music for cleaning and even writing code.
just some fun tunes man
Ok, fine, I'll play Cuphead again...
The drum tone on Fantail is glorious. 5-Star album cover
Love a big band. Makes me want to swing dance.
Really landed for me on second listen; brings to mind the atmosphere of a sleazy noir.
Undoubtedly great jazz arrangements but, this big band swung sound its very low on my registry of jazz preference. Nevertheless Count Basie was a God amongst men in his era and his contribution and stylings inspired all of pop music for nearly a 2 decade span. The Atomic arrangements were of an incredibly high quality and clarity with maximum ability to groove.
Lovely. (13 known/27 new)
Great Jazz
Quintessential big band
Amazing record. I had never listened to this, even though I love jazz and Count Basie. This will move into my regular rotation for sure
Complex as fuck, leipe albumcover ook. Gewoon echt goede jazz
Not familiar with Big Band and Swing, but this was great.
Classic sound. Great jazz.
I don't know much how to assess big band and jazz music. I was entertained the entire way through and I thought the flow from one song to the next felt well considered and kept each new song fresh. I will be coming back to this.
Catchy. Just like you would think Jazz should be.
Enfim, nota 9
I normally don't gravitate towards big band....but not to say I'm not into it. But this was really awesome. The first track definitely din't pull me in...but the rest absolutely had me going. Great driving music, really thought provoking stuff. How is that possible without lyrics? Well music is just funny like that. It doesn't need to literally ask you a question in order to get the juices flowing. Respect to Count. An all-timer forever and always
7/10
Pleasure coming actoss this. 4.5/5
Good album
Frenetic big band. Good.
Classic big band jazz. Everything you'd expect to get. Just surprised this was released in the late 50s and not like 3 decades earlier.
Honestly I love jazz now. Big band a little less but I wanted to run it back once it was over! Vibes only. 4.13
Good for focusing on work
It’s jazz
Big band/swing dance music is extremely listenable compared to EDM, which is created using synthesizers and drum machines. The musicians here are top-notch and the music has a soul. This is a fun album.
Not what I'd generally listen to on Spotify, but then that's what this is for isn't it - to broaden your horizons. Great BIg Band music. Fantastcally talented musicians. It will stay on my list.
At this moment in time, I struggle to wrap much of a frame of reference around this record; I’m afraid to say too much because I just don’t feel qualified. It’s maybe something (a lack of imagination?) that the first thing that springs to mind for me is the New York of Home Alone 2. The big blasts from the big band rushing through my speakers feel as exciting and overawing as the imposingly tall, impossibly alive city must have felt to Kevin McAllister – a figure central to my own childhood who is also, in the there and then of Home Alone’s NY, a lonely witness to so many of the icons of America’s great imperial phase. And that’s really what this record sounds like to me: a glorious echo from the American century. It’s one that remains vital not because America does – far from it, really – but because the brilliant people who contributed to that cultural hegemony are made no less brilliant by America having been brought low. Back to Home Alone, and in the hotel lobby Kevin sprints past a tall man in an expensive coat. The man might be on his way to the roof, spoiling to find a vantage from which to survey the world’s most significant skyline. It’s a skyline men of his appetite typically want to make their own, of course, shoving their overcompensations evermore inelegantly into the clustering mass. In short, synecdoche of a nation. It’s a shame that America hasn’t had someone of Basie’s erudition and skill to lead its own metaphorical band. Getting the best from each other starts with getting the best for each other; America’s century, so spiritedly captured on albums like this, was built on principles like that. Principles now under threat of total dismantling by tall men in expensive coats.
Vibes !!! standouts were Whirly-Bird and Splanky a lot of fun instrumentation.. they don't make music like this anymore hehehe
fuck yeah forever thankful for that jazz class i took in college 💙💙lil' darling is a stunnnnner. Make live music like this more accessible!! we'd all be better off for it
Really cool to listen!
Excellent for some work day tunes!
i dig big band jazz, what can I say. this album was super dope to have on in the background and I really enjoyed it.
Back to not knowing enough about jazz to fully appreciate this like I should, but I made for great in-flight background music while I read. I’ll take that all day long. I do know enough to know that Count Basie is a legend, so I’m not going to discredit him with a low rating.
I thought I couldn’t REALLY get into early jazz and swing bc it made me feel like I was living in a charlie chaplin film, but I was proven wrong! Count Basie is an icon, the grandiosity and sheer movie like quality of the songs put me in a good mood, and “lil darling”, the last track, was a sweet and slow song like a warm hug. my favorite second to “double-o” !
When I first saw the album and band name I really had no idea what I was in for. After starting I was excited and enjoyed it. I know a lot of things are comparing it to jazz, but it felt a little more big band music to me :) It reminded me of watching the Lawrence Welk show with my grandparents.
