Nothing special

i forgor

mostly sounds the same but not bad, fav song was The First Taste

Not bad at all, just not my jam. I would not come back to any songs on this album, but can appreciate the blues/r&b vibes. Also having never listened to Fiona Apple, this sounds EXACTLY like what I imagined it to sound like

I don’t own enough berets to enjoy this album I think

didn’t really grab me at all, just not a fan of this one unfortunately :(

She's talented, but I didn't care for the record.

Paves the way for artists like Adele but it’s a classic pre-streaming situation where a popular album was carried by a strong single with a bunch of filler around it.

Nothing

Haven't really listened to Fiona Apple before. The album was all right. The slower songs are better. Best song: Criminal

i want to like this but i find it at best slightly interesting and at worst annoying for the same reasons i dislike radiohead and most singer-songwriter music.

No thank you. I doubt I will ever listen to this again.

All in all, for me, this was unremarkable. Musically and vocally it’s fine, but there was nothing about this that I found particularly interesting.

Firmly in the "not great, but not bad" category.

This was a lackluster hodgepodge that didn't do anything for me.

There were songs I liked but over all not gonna listen to it again anytime soon.

Not my favorite. Another case of on first listen, couldn't zero in on any memorable songs. More rambling than not.

Not really my thing. 90's rock that is of very little consequence.

I mean, you can tell she is talented. She was 21 when she wrote this. But, not my thing. One or two … ok songs, but majority, boring.

Maybe the last song was interesting. Not bad but not for me. 2.5

Boring. 2/5

I get why people like her...but when this came out, and almost 30 years later, I still am just kind of bored with it.

I thought this was kinda overrated, and now thanks to this Apple keep putting it in my playlists. I didn’t know why until I came back to do this review so thanks for that

Ahhh very mildly aware of Fiona and glad to hear the debut and get a better sense of her music… If anyone on here reads the album description on Qobuz - what is that guys problem?! 😂 I don’t know why this isn’t really hitting. Just feels like something missing and a bit lacking somehow, but at the same time has variety, unexpected elements and originality. Maybe just not my bag. And going for very close, clear and personal vox recording but doesn’t have the voice to hold it. It’s okay, and different enough, just pretty unforgettable. Someone mentioned a female Jeff Buckley, and I’d agree, but a VERY budget version with much worse composition. Got quite annoyed with it by the end. (2.5)

This album was fine musically and vocally, but it just didn’t appeal to me.

Wirkt sehr pretentious

This just isn’t music made for me

Fine, a little sleepy

Sorry I’m not fiolling this

Criminal was the only song I knew, the rest were boring.

Outside of one or two songs I was underwhelmed by this album. Good vocals but nothing more. It’s never a good sign when I’m counting down the tracks to the end of the album.

Criminal is the only thing keeping this from being a 1-star

It was ok

Didn’t do much for me I’m afraid.

I’ve heard of Fiona Apple but her music has until now passed me by. I was expecting something quite rocky/grungy after reading the reviews … but I was disappointed (and bored by the end).

Not really my jam. If I enjoyed listening to the music I might pay more attention to the lyrics and maybe there's something there but I just didn't have a good time.

niets spectaculair

had a nice session with some headphones but still couldn't come around to liking it

Pretty strong vocals here and some interesting instrumentation but overall this is god damn boring. The punches it delivers feel just a bit manufactured. I think this album lacks a lot of authenticity. I can see a lot of people liking this album if you're already into the genre, but I don't see a lot of reasons for this album to be my beachhead into exploring it any further.

I love her cover of the Beatles song Across the Universe and she has a beautiful voice but this album left me a bit cold

Listened last night, honestly can't remember anything about it.

It was nice didn’t do a lot for me though

It's just pop.

Never got her…

Decent voice but this was dullll

Not my kind of thing, but it was still off to a strong start. Enjoyed perhaps the first half. But gets a bit boring, samey, and the second half didn't have much to offer.

Melody nice in some places, lyrics absolutely terrible

Now that’s what I call boring 96

Boring, boring, boring. Inoffensive.

Bit meh. I didn't find it offensive, but not something I would actively listen to.

I didn't dislike the album, but I don't think I found anything musically interesting to warrant another listen.

Ne mogu zamisliti kolekciju 10 sličnijih dosadnijih pjesama.

Idk, I don't "get it"?

Not really my thing, but enjoyed Pale September

Somekinda poor man’s singer-songwriter version of Hooverphonics? Not really make any real impact to me.

Kind of an boring pop record. Started off as a singer/songwriter type deal with slight edge of promise, but quickly turned stale and I found it boring. I'm also pissed that this is considered rock music by the grammys, after taking a peek at the nominees it seems to be even more meaningless award than I realized (also, this album was nominated in the 1997 awards).

não me desceu

It really wasn't to my taste. Her voice is incredible, but not one song gripped me. Maybe I wasn't in the mood and missed this one here as she is so revered by all

Meh 2.25

A fine album, I just don’t see myself ever listening to it again. Strong lyricism, vocals and musical arrangement. Just not for me.

Although some songs are dragging and compelling and the singer has a beautiful voice, it doesn't do much for me

first song - poor meh

BOOOOOORING

I had per-conceived notions coming in that were largely correct, but there is more variety here than I expected. It was fine background music to me catching up on work

The First Taste is fine. Last song isn't terrible either. Just isn't my kind of album, mostly due to vocals.

The great, mysterious, Fiona Apple - waify, alternative, seductress of the 90s that burst on the scene and then seemingly disappeared as fast as she appeared. Tiny girl, deep voice!! She was like the little weird girl from school that suddenly opened up and everyone was like - wow, where did she come from? Sleep to Dream and Criminal were the breakouts from this album and defined the sound of the album pretty well. The rest are mostly slower, sullen songs. Not really my bag, but this album definitely left an impression on 90s kids.

Good in the right circumstances. Instrumental during Shadowboxer was quite good. Worst Song: Pale September Best Song: The First Taste Added to Liked Songs: Shadowboxer, The First Taste

Was excited to go back and listen to this but was underwhelmed.

altern. rock, 1996 -> 2

This is now one of the albums I've heard in my life. I'm no better or worse for it. It exists

Ok, not my kinda thing.

Sounds like a cross between Sheryl Crow and Alanis Morissette albeit perhaps a bit more introspective and a lot more maudlin. There's not much irony or levity to break the heaviness. I can see the appeal, but it's not for me. However, the song "Criminal" proved something of an earworm.

This is fine, but I found back then and still now (having read subsequent retrospectives) that there’s a kind of kid gloves treatment Apple gets in this early phase. “Can you believe such a sound comes from such a young thing?” Too much of a gimmick, in other words. But, gimmicks get you in the door, and for that, I thank Tidal. In general, there’s a soul/jazz monotone vocal that Apple returns to throughout Tidal, which she abandoned just a few years later. I mean, she was 18 when this was being recorded, kinda tough to level any substantial critiques. Probably 17 when she wrote half the material. The leaps she would make only a few years later far outshine the crutches she relies on here.

Unique voice, and songs. Made a splash than kinda disappeared. Like so many artists today.

I don’t get why this is enjoyable in any way. She sounds so hurt and scorned that she sounds like an emotional vampire

Some nice songs, first song caught my attention. Lost over the middle part of the album. Criminal has a cool opening bass riff

jazz pop, not really my thing 2.5

I understand what this album is supposed to be, but something about it just does not work for me. I’m not a fan of the idea that the voice is the instrument and the lyrics becoming secondary to just enjoying the husky raspy tones of somebody’s voice. Congrats are having so many singles on this album, but I thought they all sounded very similar, and I don’t think I would come back to listen to this album again unless someone really really begged me to give it another listen.

I do not know, if I be ever grown-up enough for this kind of music. Fav: The First Taste

Un po' una lagna...

She seems upset. Sometimes angry, mostly sad. Someone sould dend her some flowers

Pretty boring, all the songs sounded the same.

Didn't do anything for me

Didn’t finish it

Much like Suzanne Vega, I don't feel like these one or two hit wonders are albums I need to listen to before I die.

Arbitrary

Kivoja melodioita mut ei ihan oma juttu

3/1001. I listened to this twice with about a week delay, the 2nd listen since I thought perhaps I didn't pay enough attention to the music or something. But no, this music doesn't speak to me. Somehow it sounds like a 17-year old who wants to tell her life story, cry her heart out, but there is not much to tell yet. Nothing too wrong about the music, but the songs roll out one after other without too much variation. I suppose she was one to start or at least to establish a genre, but the ones who came after really mastered it (perhaps her later albums as well). Nevertheless imho a surprisong pick for 1001 albums.

A high 2 but despite this clearly being decent, it didn't do anything for me

Can appreciate this but not my taste

Not for me

Not sure I get it. Musically, there's noting there that pulls me in. Lyrically interesting at times but otherwise drab.

Not the worst but nothing really grabbed me. I preferred Fetch the Bolt Cutters

Not for me.

Mostly piano-led singer/songwriter fare with elements of trip-hop and a dash of jazz thrown in. A pleasant listen, well produced with some nice touches, but never really blew my socks off. Standard bluesy vocals throughout probably let it down melodically, which is a shame.

Pretty similar to the goldfrap one. Doesn't destroy my ears so its ok I guess but dont really enjoy this kind of music. Doesn't exite me.

Lyrically interesting, but melodically missing the hooks that characterized her peers of the time.

Love the cover, but just didn’t connect with this sonically or lyrically. Perhaps with more listens, but when does that become beating a dead horse in hope of a glimpse of life? I appreciated some lyrics, but I didn’t find myself wanting to hear anything again. Gave it a few listens, wouldn’t skip it if it came up again, but unlikely to ever go back to it. I found it a bit dreary and monotonous, dragging my mood down. It didn’t feel enjoyable or a pleasure to listen to, but more like a burden or even, dear I say, a punishment. I didn’t hate it, but I wouldn’t ask for it again.

It definitely sums up the sound of the era. Not my taste though.

Didn't find to much in this one that stood out to me. A lot of repetition and all the songs are five minutes long (please there's neither the vocals nor the instrumentals to warrant that length). Her vocals worked okay with the first half tracks where they're a bit more upbeat and the vocals are almost more spoken word but I didn't think they worked in slower songs when she tried to go higher/sing more sustained notes.

She has such a voice especially in "Shadowboxer" or "Never Is a Promise" really profound, really touching but I'm not a huge fan of the music like that sounds weird which actually sucks because she sings pretty nicely !

Wrong time, wrong place. Was incredibly tired when I listened to this and it didn't help the situation. Didn't hate it but it went by uneventfully

Its nice as background music but not to actively listen to

Very sad girl 90s. Strong piano. Not sure at all what is special about this album. I guess criminal (I've been a bad bad girl) is a decent song and a bit of a classic, but don't think it supports the rest of the album. Maybe if I was into jazz this would be good?

Inte min grej

So I do find Fiona’s voice pretty annoying for the most part and the songs on her debut aren’t really the full Fiona whack which is probably a good thing considering how much I dislike all her later stuff I’ve heard. There’s some chill 90s grooves here but not too many memorable choons except for the first minute of Criminal (I’ve been a bad, bad guuuurl). The First Taste rides silkily along a nice undulating Latin beat and is the closest thing to a favourite track. 2.5 stars.

Not one i'd come across before, lets go. Ok, all the pieces are here, voice is ok, nice drums, piano is good, strings are good, why am i not enjoying this? I ended up listening twice as i couldnt grab it. It sounds like an AI album where everything should fit but it just doesnt, a jigsaw picture made of lots of different puzzles that dont quite fit and the effect is very jarring. I kept getting a nice beat or a hook and then it would disappear without any development. Very strange

Decent voice but my god it's boring

A less slutty version of Lana Del Rey

I do not like Fiona Apple's music. There I said it. There is something about this album that feels off. Something about the vocals and the music do not mesh. I think the vocals are too loud. And I also don't think her voice is good enough to be put over the instrumentals chosen for this album. It is off-putting to me.

2+ Stars (6/15)

Played it, remembered a few songs from when they were originally released then went back to what I was doing. Didn’t really do it for me then, nothings changed I’m afraid.

I think I dozed off a couple of times

Pretty good, a few I enjoyed. Somewhat alt rock, nice voice.

Not that bothered.

insubstantial

Great voice, the songs left a bad taste in my mouth though. Just... not for me, I suppose. Some interesting bits but nothing I want to bring into my future. Not relatable enough for me and toward the end everything started to sound a bit the same, with a couple exceptions that I don't really care to review.

I’m sure someone liked it, just not sure whomst

big meh

Bad apple

If you take away the "can you believe she was 18 and 19 years old when she made this, her debut?", and just focus on the music, you're left with a different vibe. I never listened to this record in 1996 or after, but probably brushed up against a couple of the singles here and there... "Criminal" was hard to escape for a bit there. So it's interesting to hear this disembodied voice and production, removed from its time period and context. It certainly sounds great, with a jazzy, '70s singer-songwriter undertone... seventh chords and melodies clinging to the blues scale when she runs out of melodic ideas... this was also the period of time when rock songs, even 'pop' songs, were at their longest on average, and this record is caught in that snare... "Criminal" is groovy and catchy but it's 5:42, "Shadowboxer" is 5:25... you REALLY have to be patient with these songs. I don't get why the people in charge would allow "Slow Like Honey" and its plodding, meandering ilk to make the final cut... it's like a lounge singer who has been playing standards who told the audience "I'm gonna play one of MY songs now" and puts everyone to sleep... it REALLY pulled me out of the record, and the nineties bossa groove of "The First Taste" couldn't get me back. In the end, for me at least, the production, the voice, the musicianship, is all far better than the actual songs. That may be enough for some, but it wasn't enough for me.

Couldn't get the overall appeal for this album, to me, it sounded like a person who made an album that hasn't honed in on their sound and hasn't quite figured out what they're going for. I did enjoy a single song off this though and it was "The First Taste", so the album wasn't a complete wash. Perhaps its because its the most pop sounding tracks.

Every song sounds like Phil Spector was given the reigns and he said more strings and swell effects. Repetitive.

Boring

Not really my thing, couple of ok songs, quite morose, nothing particularly standout or influential about the album, very bland

Just couldn't get into it

I haven’t yet worked out yet whether I’m supposed to rate on whether I like an album, whether I think its iconic of it’s genre and decade or whether i think it’s been highly influential for later artists. Not being a pop/rock professional, I can’t really judge by anything other than ‘like’. So …. It’s nice, she’s talented, what else am i to say? Not going to buy it, though.

not a fan. i feel like the lyrics were annoying to me for some reason.

Fiona’s debut Tidal is dreary and a bit sleepy. Album starts slow and gets slower as it progresses. Good piano work but some songs are over dramatic. Hopefully, she improves as an artist after this effort. L = (2.3*s) J = (2.1*s)

On the frontside of this listen I vaguely recalled the name Fiona Apple but wouldn't have been able to name a song. My curiosity was piqued by the first couple songs. Seemed like a decent 90's sound with a female vocalist. Maybe this Tidal album could be alright? Unfortunately it didn't hold up through the remainder of the playtime. It's not awful, but it mainly devolved into a handful of long boring melodramatic songs. I was completely over it by the end of the runtime. Not the worst of the bunch but nothing I'll ever put on again. Pretty skippable overall. 1.67 stars

can’t see myself ever listening to this again. was it terrible? no, just not for me.

Not for me - not horrible but not my thing.

Nothing special

Not my kind of music

Apple is a very acclaimed artist I've never managed to fully "get". See also: Nick Cave, who this reminded me of a bit, and I also don't really get The lyrics are quite good and there's some nice enough arrangements to certain tracks and the piano playing is alright. I find her vocals a bit monotonous and the songs lack hooks though. Some songs are longer than they need to be, even the hit Criminal Ok but I wouldn't be in a hurry to listen again

Maybe this was better when it came out but it's a big nothing burger

Never heard of her before, but the first ⅔ of the album sounded like Alanis Morissette. Only not so angry, or good. After that it got a bit samey and dull. It was OK, just a bit meh. Just a 2 from me.

First track was great. Banging bass guitar, angry keyboards and angry vocals. Just got dull after that.

I've seen Fiona Apple in many years' best albums lists, so I was looking forward to listening to this. The first song was pretty good, with its effects laden guitar. Then it all seemed to slide downhill with piano ballad after piano ballad. Things picked up on the last song, but it wasn't enough to lift it out of that rut. Shame.

Not really a fan of these kinds of ballads with no beat. Just not my thing.

It's a good album, but it's not for me.

Like Amy winehouse with none of the soul, boring

Forgot I was listening to it on the ride home yesterday, became white noise mixed in with the motorcycle.

I always like Fiona Apple, but always forget about her. Once it’s on, it’s like, “oh yeah she’s great,” then I don’t think about it anymore when the listen is done. Maybe just too soft and moody, I have to be in the right spot to listen to.

This probably hit pretty hard on the Lilith Fair tour

Another girl with a pretty voice singing about love or whatever... 2 stars

you are my sunshine Album ok.

Not that great I'm afraid.

This another album I really wanted to like going in, but didn't leave very satisfied. I do see the appeal, I listened through it a few times and can say she's a great songwriter and lyricist. Outside of this though, I didn't feel engaged with a single song here, which felt like wandering through 50 minutes of flat chamber pop and jazz unable to find a single moment of music interest. Some tracks were conceptually interesting like 'Sleep to Dream' but I don't see myself returning to listen, hopefully will like more of her other stuff in the future.

Not bad, but not really.my jam. I see the appeal, but she doesn't stand out that much, and calling her "the best" seems a bit overblown. Very 90s.

I think I liked her album when the pawn... better but, not a bad album

Thought I would like this more because Criminal is such a good song, but she sort of sounds like an okay lounge singer.

Found it a bit similar to others i listened. Not my style. High 2.

Very jazz influenced vocals, piano chops, and rhythm section, but they’re “pop” songs. Unfortunately, there’s not many pop hooks and the songs are overall unengaging to keep the listener for north of 4 minutes.

snoozefest

This was my Halloween album...and it couldn't be further from a Halloween theme. It also isn't much further from completely terrible. Favorite Song: The opener.

Fiona Apple is a great talent and I love her attitude. I enjoyed Shadowboxer and Criminal but the rest of the album was too samey.

no 2/5

Not a fan of Mrs Apple.

Easy on the ear. Not an essential album though

Enjoyed but didn’t love

All a bit dull and anonymous to me.

Some of the tracks aren't bad, but... not really my kind of thing.

Decent voice, but not really my thing. Got kinda boring towards the end. 2.5/5

The entire album is moody and none of those moods are happy. If you’re into angry conflicted feelings this album might be for you.

Never locked into this. I like Fiona Apple’s voice. And I’ve enjoyed her songs in the past. But this album didn’t do much for me. 2.5/5

first song was great, rest was unremarkable.

just not for me dawg

Felt nothing :(

4/10 - Gives Mitski energy. It was just kind of boring. I did not love her voice. However, the production was pretty good but a little repetitive.

I really want to like this album. I remember watching her speech at the 97 VMA awards. And I find the albums she has done with Jon Brion are far better. I know she was young when this was released and some of the lyrics are great; however, i can’t stop zoning out or letting this album slip into the background. I really try and then after 5 minutes I’m itching to change the channel. Maybe I’m not in the right frame of mind but I still cannot get into this album- lord knows I’ve tried.

I just get absolutely nothing from this. I can appreciate why people might key into it emotionallly ... but there is just nothing in it for me.

I liked 2 songs

Fiona Apple's debut album, Tidal, is a bold and ambitious exploration of raw emotion and intricate musical arrangements. The album’s standout feature is Apple's deeply personal and confessional songwriting, which delves into themes of heartache and introspection with striking candour. Tracks like Criminal and Shadowboxer showcase her unique voice and intense vulnerability, setting her apart in the 90s music landscape. However, while Apple's ambition is evident, her style may come across as overly intense and emotionally heavy. Despite this, Fiona Apple's debut remains a compelling and noteworthy contribution to alternative music. NUMBER OF BANGERS - 2 STAND OUT TRACK - Carrion

Didn't really get on with this album, just had me wanting to listen to KD Lange

Pleasant but dull.

Just wasn’t for me

Good album

Only previous experience of Fiona Apple's work was a guest appearance on Elvis Costello's "I Want You". Quite liked that but this album unfortunately failed to impress... Most songs very similar with some verging on sounding like they could have featured in Frozen. Not the worst album ever written and pleasant enough to listen to but not one I'd actively seek out to listen to again.

Not sure

more contemporary spin on singer-songwriter shlock. not bad not for me bored nnn

A bit too humdrum. Nice but boring. Can’t figure out how it deserves to be on this list.

Never got the Fiona hype. Does nothing for me

Decent tunes - got a bit repetitive

Not as bad as I thought

I was surprised I remembered as many tracks from this as I did, until I looked and realized there were six singles. Overall, better than I remembered, but a bit too jazzy for my tastes.

Lyrics may be one thing but the overall feel is a collection of songs with a somewhat disinterested delivery.

It's fine. I'd rather go for a Sara Bareilles of Missy Higgins album instead, if I'm in this mood.

It's okay. Maybe it's all the imitaters that make this less impressive

Something not quite right with the instrumentation and the vocals too wobbly

Tidal wave of shite

Slinky vocals but slightly devoid of personality.

It’s alright, her voice is interesting and the songs can be catchy, but it doesn’t feel consistent enough throughout to hold my attention.

Too eclectic, bit bland, single wasn’t the best song on the album.

Better than I expected from the Fiona Apple I've listened to in the past, which I've mostly found to be overrated. Criminal is a bop. Overall a pretty strong album, though I'm unlikely to return to it.

Did not really care about it? Criminal is a good song.

Interesting to listen to. A little slow and subdued for my taste.

Boring. Nothing memorable on the album sadly. Didn't really enjoy it either 2 ⭐️

Really liked bits, had a haunting quality. But less keen on other bits.... Just missed the 3 for me.

maps is such an outlier song on this album

Sorry to say I found it quite boring

Not my style but, not bad

Gave it a try. Too much durge

Not my thing. A bit bland 2/5

I didn't like it. I know she's supposed to be really talented and all this, and I don't doubt it, however... The actual music was boring, it was plinky plonky phone on-hold music for years and then her voice comes in. Ok- maybe she's talented, but she sat there crooning into the mic, harping on about garbled nonsense. One line really stuck out: 'the shades and shadows undulate in my perception'. Wtf- queen. Just a moment. Stop us Ng big words that add absolutely zero to the song- I don't understand what the hell she means and I don't think she does either. It's a stupid line trying to make her seem interesting and insightful when really she sounds stupid. The lyrics don't fit together and she wobbles it out in the most rhythmless way. Honestly, really disliked it, it was boring and something I'd be pissed off to listen to in a waiting room or lift. Also- the hype for criminal??? What is criminal??? It a song with no discernible hook and whenever it feels like it's on the brink of becoming even slightly catchy, she goes back to singing random shit that sounds worse than livewire radio. To conclude, she may be a talented musician, and I can respect her for that, however, I think her music is rubbish and she should just try a different career at this point.

Doesn't resonate with me. Seemed like ok 90s pop.

If you’re gonna do the whole singer songwriter thing, either be Sara barielles or just get out of the game. This one was actually listenable as opposed the previous FA we got which was borderline unlistenable. But Shania said it best, “that don’t impress me much”.

This is decent debut album. Song variety and a big radio hit, but why does she insist on trying to sing in her lower vocal range? Especially with the 90's female OOOOOoooooOoOOooooOOOOoOOOo vocals. It's not for me, but I can see why some people would like it. If this was my first time hearing Fiona Apple I would probably rate it higher, but I know that the praise this album received ultimately lead to "Fetch the Bolt Cutters". I don't want to risk that again.

I'm having a bit of a bad run of albums for me. Seems fine, just doesn't resonate. Will I listen to again: 0%.

generally not a fan of pop and she got a very generic voice and she does not hit those notes... Redeeming thing is that some brief jazzy parts are alright, but the rest is bland.

all the songs sound the exact same her voice annoys me

There's nothing here that's particularly good. Sometimes her voice sounds really nice, but on the whole it's forgettable. Definitely not a bad album though. Just not special.

Album # 33 Very bluesy, reminded me of K D lang but not my cup of tea

Not a fan of the album

Not doing it for me.

Pretty forgettable

Oh this is OK isn’t it? Nice enough. Falls a bit too easily into background music. I like her deep velvety expressive voice, the arrangements are quite atmospheric and sweeping but never too dramatic. The same descending progression seems to appear a few times. Not setting the world on fire for me but a pleasant and thoughtful trip through some not too tempestuous seas.

She is a good singer, but not a great one. And for the type of music she makes, you need to be a great singer. Ends up sounding a bit worse than if it would have been slightly simpler to better match her singing capabilities

Its broody and angsty, the brand of it is clear. I like the silky tones, it gives it a jazz/lounge singer sound.

Criminal by far the best song. Instrumental were pretty solid. Overall too slow for my liking/not my taste in music.

Out of that amazing wave of 90s female artists - Tori, PJ, Björk etc - Apple is the one I just didn't really get.

Basic enough songs with not much listening value. Not enjoyable to the ear and offers nothing of substance. "Never is a Promise" is the only slightly redeemable song. 2 stars.

Float-y kinda music. Not really for me.

Whilst I had heard of Fiona Apple (great name!) I had never intentionally listened to her music before. If I was to guess I would have said she might have been a teenage pop artist or a rapper but I didn’t know really what to expect. Whilst she was neither of those things she neither tickled my interest to an extent that I would listen to her again or seek out her music. Quite an unforgettable album.

Eh whatever.

2 out of 5.

Sultry, droning, good background music

Some okay songs, but not my vide.

Her voice leaves a lot to desire.

Meh, not my thing

Best song - Criminal

Fiona Apple - Tidal - Did not like “Sleep to Dream” at all! “Slow Like Honey” was moderately enjoyable to me.

Langsam, melancholische Melodien. Schöne Stimme

So very, very boring

I was not really a fan

Susan Vega like. Easy to listen to but mostly uninteresting.

I have a short list of singer/songwriters I adore. Sadly Fiona Apple isn't one of them.

Meh it’s just not really my thing. The album looped and I didn’t realize. I guess it’s pleasant to have on I understand liking it

Beautifully produced, breathy vocals, jazz-leaning chamber pop. God this was boring! The songs all seem to be about the same thing, something about relationships, lots of angst, very dull indeed. Not even interesting enough for 1 star, so I'm giving it 2.

I never understood what was so great about Fiona Apple. Her growling vocals just sounded off. Personally, I thought much of her output was just dullness masquerading as artfulness. This album in particular was hailed as a great music from a new artist, but I never understood why.

Meh, not bad music doesn’t appeal to me though.

I'd never heard of Fiona Apple before today, nor was a single song on this album familiar to me. Carrion and Criminal were quite nice, and while I didn't have a bad time listening to the rest of album, I found it to be forgettable. I wonder why it made the list.

# 118 : well I struggled to listen to it, and I found it drawn out, tedious and boring. It’s the kind of music they play in shopping centre toilets to stop people from loitering. Nothing really grabbed me - not even the so called hits.

Not my type of music.

boring and a bit too slow for me

Her fans like it.

Vocals and piano where great but overall wasn't a style I enjoy

Blah. Some interesting vocals but mostly just blah.

Started off quite good but then tailed off and made me fall asleep!

väldigt tråkig

Clear Jazz influences. Not something I would listen to, however.

Kinda disappointing compared to her more recent output. Some strong stuff on here but it was slow as honey.

Just overall kind of boring, didn't vibe with it musically and zoned out of the lyrics.

First time listening to album, and overall I enjoyed a good chunk of the tracks. Some of it was a bit slow for my taste, but there was a lot of soul, emotion, and beautiful writing that absolutely make it worthy of being on this list. It starts and ends on very high points with a bit of a lull in the middle. Overall not my fave but recognize her talent. Album art 2.5 stars.

Willing to accept I'm probably missing some nuance but it didn't do much for me. Can't win em' all

Meh, had a few alright moments on it.

Didn't love it

Huisvrouwenmuziek. Dan is het even de vraag hoe erg ik me er precies aan stoor. Een strenge 2 of een milde 3.

After listening to “Sleep to Dream,” I had high hopes for the rest of Fiona Apple’s Tidal based on the opening track’s 1965 Dylan-esque lyrics and haunting piano. In a way, the song does set the tone for the rest of the album, but only in that each track sounds more or less like some variation of every other track. I don’t mind her monotone voice, and if anything this can be spun into a positive; the instrumentals just need more variety to make that happen. “Criminal,” apparently one of her biggest hits, does not stand out to me at all. A nice little Easter egg is the tinge of mid-20th century jazz-inspired xylophone in the background. I noticed Apple covered the Beatles’ “Across the Universe” in 1998 and had to give it a listen. While she does a fine job, the song still sounds too similar to most of the songs on Tidal. Her voice is pleasant and her lyrics are well-written, but the monotony just leaves too much to be desired.

I've never heard of Fiona Apple before but the album's pretty good. Would I listen to it of my own free will? Doubt it.

Not her best. Missing some of the rawness that was …Bolt Cutters

kinda boring

Doing this challenge has introduced me to multiple albums that I feel like I SHOULD like, but I just don’t for whatever reason. Take this album, for example. I didn’t realize how similar Fiona Apple is to Regina Spektor. Even their voices are similar. But I love Regina Spektor and thought this was blah. Not bad, just not for me.

Jaa a. Taustalla meni ihan ok.

Your basic 90’s pop music

some songs are fine, some are not. I don't really have an elaborate opinion on this one.

WTF STOP STARING Slow and boring. Started strong, but didn't keep up The cover makes me uncomfortable

I didn't get it at the time and i still don't.
