Didn't give it a close listen, but some interesting, dark sounds.

I dig her swagger, her sound is unique, and her arrangements are on point. On the con side, though, she has zero range, and some of her vocal flourishes are borderline embarrassing. Also, the melodies here are entirely unforgettable. The hook from Criminal is cool, and the first song got better with a second listen, but mostly the album left little impression. I was hoping to like this more. I love her cover of Across the Universe. Maybe her other albums are better.

Enjoyed this more than expected as I thought it would be very tough to get through but it passed by pretty comfortably. That said it was pretty bland and I wouldn't listen again.

I just don't think it's my type of music.

If it wasn't for hearing her cover "I Want You" by Elvis Costello on some VH-1 show, I probably wouldn't care about her much. I was sort of impressed that this was associated with Jon Brion (a true genius). There were brief moments when I heard a great jazz singer in there somewhere and as much as I tried to keep that frame of mind, it kept getting pushed away. I would love to hear her re-do this album someday in more of the style of the jazz standards and jazz singers that Fiona Apple obviously loves, but for now, too much of this left me mostly flat.

That is a terrible album cover. The music is a little better, although It’s a little too loungey, if that’s even a word. She does have a good voice, though.

I gave this a good go, as I expected to like it more than I did, but it just never quite landed with me. Decent, but I can't see myself going back to this one.

I really like FTBC and most of what I've heard of Fiona's later work. I was disappointed by this though; there's still some good songwriting but a lot of the music is pretty uninspiring. Too lounge-y for me. 2.5

Nice album, good singer. Not really sure what to say, as with all the albums before and all albums after, I have listened to this once and put down my thoughts during the play through. Forgettable to be honest. If there were half stars I would go 2.5, but there aren't so... 2 / 5 stars.

Dull girl music tbh. Consciously intellectual, sometimes showy, rarely gripping. The album just seems to go on with unvaried variety.

This album was not my favourite. Fiona Apple can be grouped into the same kind of emotional, piano heavy, jazzy pop music as Sarah McLachlan. Perhaps if Sarah didn't get the rights to the musical accompaniment of advertisements about adopting cats that have burdocks stuck to them and dogs with eating disorders, they could have used Fiona. It is the same moaning, low, slow, boring dribble. Fiona has a nice voice, but she hangs out in the low part of her register and only adds a bit of spice and hits high notes every once and again, so the lyrics drone on and kind of wash out amid the slow ballad of strings and piano. The music itself is well performed, but when combined with Fiona's singing, it just is so boring and depressing. The first 4 songs on the album aren't bad (Sullen Girl is slow and depressing, but Shadowboxer comes on right after that to inject more energy into the album again). But once the song Slow Like Honey starts, look out, because it's all depressing, boring songs from there on out It's definately a no from me. Favourite songs: Criminal, Shadowboxer, Sleep to Dream Least favourite songs: The First Taste (fyi: a one minute moaning session to finish off a song is too long), Pale September, The Child Is Gone, Slow Like Honey, Sullen Girl, Never Is A Promise 2/5

Im not a massive fan of Fionas voice and as ive said in earlier rewievs jazz shouldnt be sung so im not a massive fan of the jazz fusion she attempts. Its a well produced album that still sounds very uniqur and distinct so its not all bad

Not my bag

Fiona has a very pretty voice, it’s dynamics are at times jaw dropping. Unfortunately that is all I can say that I remember from the album despite listening to it yesterday. I found the actually songs to be quite bland. The instrumentality was forgettable and showed, in my opinion, no uniqueness between songs. I really wanted to like this album but I just found that nothing besides her voice stood out for me.

Interesting vocals, varied style for each song, yet somehow a lot of them blend together and sound same-y. Started off okay, but was bored out of my mind by the end of it. 2/5

Szczerze to jest takie bezpłciowe, że daję nawet 2 na wyrost tylko dlatego, że to nieprzyjemne nie jest. Już tak mam dosyć tej muzyki, którą mogli by grać do kotleta w jakiejś knajpie...

Another album I'm not entirely sure why it made the list - sure it's impressive the songs were written by a 17 year old, but they sound like it too. It's pleasant enough but there's not a single track I could pick out, the overwhelming impression I've been left with is that music from the mid-90s really sucked if this album got picked, and given what was going on in the UK at the time that's a real shame.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with this album. It's nice, she has a beautiful voice and her own style. I have nothing bad to say about it. It just doesn't move me, at all. It's nice, and nothing more.

this is weird, it felt like it was nearly good. it teeter totters like its just about to be good and then crumples to the floor as a shit mess of wank pissed on by the curse of a female singer overcomplicating singing to show off her voice at the detriment of a good song. its like we don't let it slip, so close to glory and then stumbling to be just embarrassing. its shit, but it kept tricking me into thinking it might not be.

God, I'm so bored. It's like somebody made one song and recorded it a dozen times to pad out a an album made to fulfill some record contract. The artist obviously has musical ability, but no talent for writing anything compelling.

I've heard a song or two off this before. It's not bad, just kinda soulsey jazz piano stuff. bit of Gen X wank going on, dragged on too much by the end. Bored me more than it interested me. But I remember seeing the video for criminal in the 90s and thinking jeez i'd be up there like a rat up a drainpipe. 2/5.

Have to confess to not listening to the while album (I usually persist) but this was just , dull. No reason I can see it should be on this list at all.

Без поняття хто це. Виглядало так, що це шось типу Kate Bush, але вже з перших пісень звучить більш комерційно, більш “polished”. На останній хвилині Criminal класна кінгізардна музичка. Взагалі музика доволі цікава, а вокал місцями дратує. Коротше поки найгірша рекомендація. Не скажу що жахливо, але трохи було бажання щоб альбом якнайшвидше закінчився.

Fiona Apple is not for me. I liked 1-2 songs. musically sounded nice just not something I will revisit 1.5

All the songs sound very similar and I really didn’t want to finish this album because it was genuinely tiring to listen to. It’s kind of jazzy which I found cool, but a lot of the songs kind of lack a structure and I really doubt I’ll listen to it again

Some people call this art. I call it annoying. I love the piano parts. If it was an instrumental piece I could handle it better, but that voice is worse than fingernails getting scratched down a chalk board. Artists like this is what puts a bad taste in my mouth when I hear a female sing. "Criminal" was probably the best song on this album, but that might be because I heard it play on the radio so I am familiar with it. She needs to just read poetry at a poetry slam instead of singing it.

Washed over me - the opening track was fun, with the various production bits, but this quirkiness seemed to tail off as the album progressed, and it settled more into pop rock ballad territory. Which for me made this much less interesting. The songs didn't really stand out, and Apple has one of those rather generic-sounding voices that is good but not great.

Den mest spelade låten på Spotify är Criminal från denna skiva. Den låten innehåller textraden "What I need is a good defense, 'Cause I'm feelin' like a criminal”. Detta enda krimiminella I sammanhanget är denna texts uselhet. Musiken är generisk och svår att komma ihåg.

Otroligt menlöst. Shadowboxer "bäst" hittills. På samma sätt som en hård bajskorv är bättre än diarré. (The Child is gone är lite "bättre") Kommer inte ihåg nåt fram till #6. Och då lyssnar jag aktivt. Gör inget annat (åker tunnelbana). Inte ett gott tecken. Händer inget. Shreks "trollfru" också heter Fiona, och jag tänker att hon ser ut som musiken låter/är. Hemskt tråkig.

Plågsamt dålig skiva. Nog den värsta musikaliska upplevelse i mitt liv. Mådde fysiskt illa. Kritikern som ville att detta album skulle inkluderas borde skjutas i huvudet.

It’s alright, okay? What more do you fucking want from me. Albums like these really remind me of the swirling cascade of humanity that is just slowly spinning down the drain beyond sight. I don’t know who Fiona Apple is, and after I’m done listening this I won’t remember. She’s just another one of those perfectly average artists who will be forgotten alongside the rest of us. I become gripped by a creeping dread while listening to music like this, since it reminds me of the interminable march of history towards an end point of oblivion. But after that deluge of death consciousness, I assuage my panic by forcing my self into the painfully temporal process of listening to this album. It becomes an all encompassing, rapturous moment as I stick myself firmly in the present as past and future wash away, a temporary glimpse of enlightenment and the end of suffering as facilitated by a mediocre soundtrack. This transgressive act of being, of disabling the conscious speculative aspects of your brain, renders you a being wrapped in time rather than hurtling towards it on rails. All that’s left is awareness of the things around you, that becomes your reality. And it’s totally liberating. The air is fresher, the light sweeter, and everything more full. Moments like that make me want to get into Buddhist meditation practice, because they’re just fantastic and I’d like to make them easily replicable. But this album is fucking not great. Don’t listen to it.

This album just did not do it for me. All the songs blended together, and I honestly have no idea why it is an album I should hear before I die.
