We went from all sitar to all piano. I enjoyed this much more. It's sort of a cosmic gumbo. It almost moves to the beat of jazz. Wikipedia says his performances are completely improvised, which is also pretty neat.

Wow this surprised me. Never heard of this album or Keith Jarrett, but this one was great. Amazing that he improvised the whole thing on a substandard piano.

A little monotonous

Pleasant listening, much better than I expected, accessible jazz, but it's still a piano for an hour and repeating themes. It's great that this sort of album got made, reached a big audience and exists but it's not something I'm going to play over and over. I can appreciate it but that's as far as it goes.

Before diving in, it really is worth understanding the extremely adverse circumstances under which Jarrett performed that cold rainy night in 1975. Because understanding this underscores just how grand an accomplishment it is. You should read the Wiki. To hear the Koln Concert is to hear one of the greatest live piano concerts that has ever been recorded. It is bursting with complex emotion and poignant melodies. Jarrett is a master and this is his undisputed magnum opus and his long-lasting gift to the world. I've heard this and many other Jarrett albums hundreds of times (this is his best). I sometimes turn to this album in times of great emotional distress like nearby deaths. And I usually listen to it on vinyl. It is so evocative that you can hear the plaintive laughter and cries of those in the room uncontrollably and numerously accenting the piano. Don't ignore those voices. That's the accompanying instrument to Jarret. Honestly, if this album does not evoke in you a powerful emotional response, you should be worried! It was nice to hear again. And for what it's worth, thank you, Keith. For the gift you gave.

I thought Keith Jarrett was a country star. I know I've spent some time living under rocks in my life but this is not what I expected country music to sound like. Great stuff. Maybe I need to go check out Bocephus next.

I'm certainly no piano expert, but Keith Jarrett's playing on "The Köln Concert" does appear pretty special even to my untrained ears. It is the only album of it's kind on the 1001 list, suggesting again that it must be pretty special. And pretty special circumstances led up to it's recording, as an 18-year-old concert promoter dealt with several complications in the run-up to the show. What it produced despite challenges is an impressive work of art.

I find the random voices very distracting. I kept looking behind me thinking someone was talking to me.

Im a bit blown away, surprised, contented. Coming in, I was expecting to have to bare this album begrudgingly to the end. Never in a 1001 years would I have listened to this album, and I’m glad I did. This is labeled jazz, but I don’t hear it as such. I guess I don’t know enough about jazz to recognize it. Keith displays piano mastery, in both technicality and expressiveness. He knows how to rip off crescendoed runs and dial it back into the intimacy of pin drop anticipation. Truly an emotional experience.

Keith Jarrett is a jazz pianist from the USA. This is a live album, recorded at the Koln (Opera House) in Cologne in 1975. Before heading out on his own, Keith played with the likes of Art Blakely and Miles Davis. The story behind this album is a fantastic one. Before the show, Keith requested a concert grand piano be supplied for him to play the concert on. There was a misunderstanding with the venue, and a baby grand piano is all that was provided. Not only that, it was the baby grand that the venue had as a strictly "rehearsal instrument". The piano was worse for wear, being slightly out of tune, and having pedals that didn't always work as they should. Keith was also having severe back pain (he had to play the concert in a back brace) so much that he couldn't sleep, and was severely overtired, and before the concert, the restaurant he went to screwed his order up, leaving Keith only enough time for a few bites before having to leave to play the show. So tired, hungry, and with the wrong instrument, he went out, and now unable to play the setlist he wanted due to the smaller, subpar instrument he was provided, improvised 66 minutes of flawless music on the spot!! I am not necessarily the biggest jazz fan, but this story of perseverance in the face of hardship is what music is all about. This album wholeheartedly belongs on this list, simply because of that story! Even the music he managed to play was amazing, though! Not something I would gravitate to every day, but absolutely stellar work. Keith was a master of his instrument!! I really enjoyed today's listen, and the story that went along with it! Favourite songs: Koln Pt. II C Least favourite songs: Koln Pt. I (just because he spent the first 10 minutes noodling about on the piano, I'm assuming trying to figure out what worked and what didn't on it) 4/5

Supreme cooking music

While Jarrett is an accomplished pianist, his work with other Jazz innovators and groups stand out more than his solo work. As a pianist myself, it is difficult to see where Jarrett is actually flowing along his pieces or strictly vibing out which leads to a lot of circular movements that would be amazing with any other instrumental accompaniment. While this is a great piece, it doesn't set a new elevated bar for modern piano.

ECM really brought the absolute best out of Keith Jarrett and The Köln Concert is the prime example of this. For over an hour, Keith brings the essence of jazz (and piano music) into its core emotional center, with expressive playing and the surprisingly high-spirited yelps emanating from Keith himself as he (and the audience) loses sense of self in the music. The perfect introduction to his many a recorded concerts.

Sounds almost more classical than jazz to me

A wonderful album that invokes many moods from intense to sad to joyous to funny. Its actuly quite amazing. 4.5 stars

Don't get me wrong, the playing was amazing and the spirit was there but damn if you must because I felt like I was at an piano I'd been forced to attend to part of this.

I do love the piano. I do love a talented and accomplished musician. Given that, why do I just not care about this album? It sounded like a soundscape or film score of a documentary on mountains. I actually kept forgetting I was supposed to be listening and walking off to do something else. It made so little impression on me. I’m sure he is a brilliant talent. What did make me laugh was at the very end I listened to the applause since it was a live concert. Even that live audience sounded very nonplussed with their lacklustre response. To describe it as a smattering of applause would be more than kind. Perhaps they too had - metaphorically - wandered off.

I acknowledge that Keith Jarrett is a talented and well accomplished musician. I love the back story of this album... gig from hell. I'm not sure I could sit through a concert of this new age style jazz but knowing it took place at 11:30PM after the opera might give it a different vibe. This is background music for a relaxing environment. I get the intellectual elements of this music but can't decide if it's actually interesting or worth talking about.... and I love talking about everything.

Masterful, dynamic and engaging - yes. An album I needed to hear before I die - no. After I listened to it I read about the album and artist. He deserves all the stars for his skills and playing this concert on a sub-par instrument. And for doing it while in pain and wearing a back brace.

I typically avoid reading or researching these albums before listening and reviewing, but I'm glad I opted to read about this album as it was playing, because knowing that this was completely improvised from start to finish really changed how I heard to it. The ultra-superlative reviews were plentiful — this is a significant milestone in jazz music. Glad I knew that. As a listener, there were many moments that were extraordinary, as in, "how on earth can someone do that?" On the whole, it was an adventure — thrilling, ecstatic, joyful and contemplative, moody, quiet, depending on where Jarrett's mood took him. It's a lot to take in, for sure, but I'm believing the hype. Something of a marvel to hear someone so in control of an instrument and willing to take a step off the ledge and thrill an audience with his playing prowess and the spark of inspiration in the moment. Could be a five for sheer audacity; I'm giving it a four just because the prospect of listening to it front to back again anytime soon seems daunting.

There's a great episode of the Cautionary Tales podcast about the making of this album. Def worth hearing. I do enjoy this album. It's impressive that the dude improvised a double album on the spot. And I dig it as background music. But for a focused lesson, not so much. It's a lot of the same thing over and over again. I don't mean that he doesn't vary things up; there are stylistic and dynamic changes throughout. But at the end of the day, it's just one dude playing a piano for an hour. Having heard this album before and knowing that it's a lot to take in at once, I spread out my listening over the course of the day, which helped. Anyway, I admire this album more than I like it. And again, it's cool background music.

This album is another great example of why I love this experiment. When you hit an album at the right time it's just so lovely. Would I ever put on this album to listen...unlikely. But now that I know Keith Jarrett is an amazing chill improv musician, the next time I have to focus at work...I'll know who to spin.

Extremely unique, especially in the context of this list. From the first notes played, it's obvious this is someone with command of the piano, and a clear idea about what they're saying with it. Despite the long tracks, I found this engaging, even mesmerizing, the whole way through.

The music has its moments, as does all of Jarrett's ever improvisational style, but perhaps the most interesting thing about this record is the story surrounding the circumstances of its recording. Certainly says something about the triumph of the creative spirit in the face of adversity.

It's fine and somewhat interesting but, overall not my cup of Jazz tea.

Finally a reason to include a live album in this series. While all live albums capture a short period in time this one stands out. The pieces didn't exist prior to the concert and, for this, has merit alone. But the compositions, the flow, the interactions are bold and tantalisingly engaging. The early thought that this might be suited as a background accompaniment so dissolved and it became engrossing. For a first listen for a hitherto unknown (to me ) artist this is something.

Love this record. It’s such a journey. Tough to explain how it feels. Expression of totally unique emotions and ones that feel universal and ones that are more transitional or ambiguous but are so specific to this recording. Sometimes totally introspective and sometimes joyous. I love the peaks and valleys and the searching and development and hearing him find inspiration in real time. There are so many amazing moments in here and it’s the context of all of it that makes them feel so satisfying and earned.

His playing is so incredible, this might be one of the best solo albums out there. To make a solo album this interesting and capturing is pretty impressive. His vocalizations are hilarious and I laughed out loud in a couple of spots. 4.5

Part 1- loved it. Part 2a- not my fave Part2 b and c- they were fine. What was with all of the huffing and puffing throughout.

Before I learned that he came up with this on the spot I was a little bored, but i feel as though that information has tainted my opinion because making up any music on the spot is so challenging and impressive. this style of music has never been my favourite, but the fact he did this one try is crazy.

This is what the soundtrack would have been to a more serious/depressing "Peanuts" special, but set in the adult world. Snoopy as an aged dog, wandering the streets after Charlie Brown left home... Linus becomes an addict and ends up working at the docks where blankets are most definitely not allowed.... n.b. that's the highest of compliments. Peanuts rule. Labeling this "jazz" might be accurate but it's not describing it at all. Super accessible but not in a simplistic way. I love the melodies he composes on the spot - his occasional vocal outbursts add to the live feel - the record wouldn't have been the same without those. I've owned this record for years and never am sure how I came by it - maybe inherited from an older relative, tucked away between old Elvis Costello and Cars albums. But it's been a Sunday morning go-to for a while - perfect soundtrack for a quiet snowy day. Even if you think you hate jazz, give it a shot. This isn't bebop; it's more just instrumental melodic composition. Love it and definitely recommended for all. 8/10 4 stars

Fantastic musician. Not a real big fan of his style or the songs themselves, but props for how well he plays. Also not a fan of the guy in the audience that kept moaning when he heard something he liked.

Mostly it seemed like aimless doodling. I just didn't feel entertained. Maybe you had to be there?

Really nicely done. Some of the best background music I've heard in years. Probably good to see live in concert. Also good to play at home if you've got a deadline or an aunt visiting, or if you're going out and the dog gets lonely.

Talented? Yes! Backstory? Yes! The reality of listening to an hour of live improv piano solos? Maybe in the right setting, late at night with a whiskey in hand, sure, less so on this particular Thursday morning.

I mean it has to be the best-selling piano recording in history for a reason right? Take some time off and give this the attention it deserves. Read up on the making of the album and Jarrett while doing it. Special.

The origin story of this concert is a wild ride and worth the read to really frame what an impressive piece this album is. This is exactly why I love jazz and doing this list. 5/5

Well that was very boring. I get that he's an incredible pianist working in difficult circumstances, but... Improvisation is how you start a piece of music, not the end result. You're supposed to go back and refine it till you have a piece of thrilling music. This is akin to a detective finding a dead body and saying "My work here is done", or an archaeologist finding a pile of dirt and not digging. In short, an utter waste of my time.

Great jazz concert, great piano work. This is some real talent. I loved it, I can see why it is received so well after all these years. Would listen to again, many, many times.

Chilling

Piano! Just Piano!

This is a live piano-only performance by Keith Jarrett. It was released on the ECM label, which has since become known for publishing their unique style of jazz known as "ECM third stream" or simply "ECM style jazz". In this solo piano performance, you will hear a poppy approach to jazz similar to jazz fusion, while hearing a sound that is grounded in western classical music, thus creating a new approach to the third stream. The end result is beautiful piano music that is much more accessible through it's jazz fusion hooks. It is doubly impressive, perhaps, that this performance was done on a rehearsal baby grand piano that was in no shape for a proper performance: largely out of tune, with a weak lower register and pedals that didn't work. The compound on the issue, Jarrett was overtired from travel and had barely any time to eat a meal before the concert. By all accounts, this performance should have been a disaster. And yet, what we hear is fantastic. Not only was Jarrett able to work around the weaknesses of the faulty instrument, but his improvisational skills shined through to deliver a magnificent night of music. His approach to jazz is electric. I struggle to find faults in the music; it simply does not bore me. Pure artistic beauty was captured 24 January 1975 in Cologne. There was something in the air.

this album is something else. everything that could have gone wrong before keith jarrett's performance did go wrong! but for me, someone who is musically untrained but enjoys music a lot, i couldn't have even predicted any of the backstage struggles and mishaps. jarrett gave a remarkable concert and every second sounds so beautiful! it's also hard to believe this was improvised, and there's only the piano for the entire concert! regardless of how the concert/album came to be, it is positively wonderful. it's easy to listen to, and the backstory makes it even more fascinating. well deserved spot on this list.

This is another prime example of the stuff I enjoy seeing pop up on this project. I have never heard of OR heard this, and the story behind it is simply amazing. In a series of mistakes, Keith Jarrett was left with an incredibly subpar rehearsal piano to perform on for a sold out audience, versus a very specifically requested grand piano befitting a piano master. What resulted was an hour of pure piano improvisation; that's right, Jarrett switched everything up and composed and played on the fly, all in a way that would fit the rehearsal piano's limited capabilities and allow for the best possible output. All the while, Jarrett can be heard occasionally stomping and vocalizing along with the work; you can tell that he feels what he's playing. This album speaks to overcoming hurdles, being present in the moment, and being open to spontaneity; a variety of chaotic events led to this and it could have resulted in a cancellation or even a performance ruined by the limitations of a specific instrument. But instead, these events occurred, Jarrett agreed to play, and his musical genius flowed, allowing for this unique masterwork to happen, something that would not be readily replicated even if one tried. I feel like the genre label of "jazz" on this album is a bit misleading. While I definitely hear aspects of jazz, this also resonates with some very classical solo piano qualities. I don't want my rating to be misconstrued with the idea that I think classical music is the best thing I've heard on this project. While I do really enjoy classical piano music, I don't regularly seek it out, and it's by no means an absolute "favorite" or "preferred" genre. Rather, my rating comes from now knowing that this album is 100% improvisation on a shoddy instrument; it is a creative breakthrough birthed from chaos. This album very clearly communicates an undeniably masterful craftsmanship and an inspiring message of spontaneous human creativity. This really is something that people could benefit from hearing before they die, and I couldn't possibly rate it any lower.

Quite pleasant piano playing

Wow, very impressive, captivating. Better than I thought a piano concert could be!

Editors get this one right: "a monument to musical possibility." The idea that the best jazz is built on spontaneous composition (aka improvisation) is the first among many reasons that more jazz records should be included on this list. Jazz is a fundamentally diffrent game than verse-chorus-verse-chorus pop songs (no matter how clever) or rock bands doing endless power chords (no matter how magisterially). Certainly there are ample KJ releases that are worthy, though this one is unique in its mostly uplifting vibe (again, kudos to editors for noting that). One feels more soul in this work than in other drier, more academic recordings. And one doesn't have to love every single note to appreciate – and be awed by – the magnitude of effort and brilliance on display. A magical night, under sub-optimal conditions, nearly 50 years ago, still translates into a transporting musical experience today – the mark of a classic or deathbed recording in any genre.

Absolutely incredible

This a very interesting Jazz album. The sound is very rough (go read the full story on Wiki) but because of it you can really feel Jarett's talent. A full hour of piano got a bit too much for me but it's definitely worth a listen.

As soon as I see the word "jazz" a chill runs down my spine - it is, without doubt, my least favourite type of music - and that's why it's taken me 6 weeks to get round to hearing it. I enjoyed it more than I expected to (and the story behind it is incredible) , but like all jazz I do find that it drags on a bit too long. Went into it expecting to give it a 1. Came out surprised to be giving it a 3!

Impressive that this is all improvisational, and some amazing lines in there. Not my thing, but belongs on this list for sure.

This was pleasant background music. It should not be on this list

I did not immerse myself into Keith Jarrett until 78 (freshman year in college) when someone on my floor played the Sun Bear Concerts non-stop. It was (and still is) tremendously impressive to me and I was hooked. I quickly worked back and discovered The Koln Concert. Jarrett's solo piano explorations are not for everyone, but I find them utterly compelling. To call this jazz is not fair and Jarrett defies categorization. He utilizes rhythmic, almost hypnotic, motifs that shift to other related motifs in an impressionistic manner. This repetition is more akin to pop music than jazz, but the elements blend jazz, classical, gospel and folk seamlessly. I think is essential listening.

Obviously he's a great pianist. I enjoyed hearing this, but not my preferred genre. Good for background music at a cocktail party.

I'm not sure what to make of this exactly. It's very different from the jazz album we heard yesterday and even more different from anything else we heard as a part of this project. I had this on while I worked and it was a good companion as it did not distract me too much. However, I don't think I would be able to just sit and listen to this for its full 70 minute run time.

I enjoyed the album. I’ve Seen All Good People… is a great song. Nothing stuck out to me as being notably different or experimental but maybe for its time.

This albums greatest strength and greatest weakness lies in the fact that it is an hour of improvised piano. On one hand it's a very impressive display of Jarrett's immense talent. On the other hand it can't be much more than a display of Jarrett's talent. It's pretty enjoyable music but it's not like the albums about anything and since it's just a piano for an hour it ends up being more of a background listening experience.

This album is the proof that jazz doesn't need huge bands or extreme complexity to be good. Sometimes, a man messing around with a piano can create some of the most beautiful jazz sounds ever. Bravo Keith!

Beautiful. The groaning is a little weird, but it's so obvious he's in a deeply personal groove that it's hard not to get sucked into the composition.

Long solo piano jazz

Best Song: Pt. II C. These terms don't really apply here, but it's the shortest, and most "song" length. Worst Song: N/A Overall: It's pleasant to listen to, but I don't think I know enough about classical music to appreciate why this particular album was selected over any other. Nothing stood out to me as ground breaking, but it's certainly something I could imagine returning to for chill reading atmosphere.

In the realm of Windham Hill though sometimes more percussive with his keyboard usage. Excellent and sensitive recording live, can only hear the audience when you want.

2 for the story and skill, but it'd be a 1 for me on its own

An hour of a single instrument is too much. I don't care what the instrument is, who's playing it, or how good they are. I'll admit that, of all the instruments, piano is the most likely to be interesting the longest... but it's still too much. To be clear, Keith Jarrett is clearly a phenomenal player. Just fantastic. But it's still boring after about 15 minutes which doesn't even get you out of the first track. On top of that, it's jazz. Which means that, rather than have things like, I don't know, structure or melody, it's just a series of wandering chord variations which are fascinating to play, I'm sure. But not so great to listen to for an hour. There are moments, though. Moments of shocking, crystalline clarity when Jarrett steps out of the chord-fog and everything suddenly snaps into focus. Those moments are electric. Shocking in their intensity and, unfortunately, in their brevity. They're not enough to pull this thing entirely out of the self-indulgent nose-dive but they are enough to let Jarrett stick the landing on a middle-of-the-road score.

08/29/2022 Love that I’ve been getting jazz albums for the past two days!!! Had heard of Keith Jarrett, but never had a solid grasp of his work. This album was really beautiful, especially since I love jazz pianists. I can’t imagine how transcendent this performance must have been for the audience watching live. — Today was another chill day. I made chicken salad, watched bcs w fi, did some reading for school, and got to talk to Lukey on FT :)). School tomorrow, also excited to continue watching bcs w fi <3

I love hearing someone so into their music as he is. The pure joy is captured by his yelling and foot stomping. There are few musicians who captivate an audience by paying solo than Jarrett.

Just one dude and his piano, but sounds outstanding. Really enjoyed this. Great to have on while concentrating.

It’s an hour long concert with 4 songs

This was not for me. It's interesting as a concept, not interesting to listen to. So very, very dull to my ears. Perhaps someone with some actual knowledge of music theory and piano playing would be much more impressed? I can't bring myself to give it a 1 even though it probably should be by my usual standards. Never again. And that moaning stuff? Lolwut

Loved that album! The live sounds really bring something and make you feel like you were taking part in the show. Learning about the circumstances of the recording, how the concert was almost canceled, how there was a mistake and the piano he was playing was bad quality and had broken pedals, how the pianist was sleep and food deprived at the time of the concert but he still managed to improvise maybe the best piece of his career, makes the whole thing seem almost magical!

Really cool solo piano jazz album, oscillating between melancholic, exstatic and epic tracks. Some parts feel pretty experimental and bring an overwhelming with nuances of sound. Great piano playing technique-wise, of course, but I don't really see the point of the album. I might as well listen to actual pianopieces if I want to hear solopiano.

Jazz, 1975. An enjoyable live album, but not one of the best jazz record of that period. The performance is undoubtably good but the project is quite normal.

Lo único interesante que puedo decir de este disco es que lo escuché en Köln… lo cual no agregó nada a la experiencia, pero suena mamón. La verdad es que no es un disco "malo" pero lleno de cosas innecesarias. Lo largo que es, las toneladas de adornos, los gritos del público (¿o son del mismo Jarrett?) cuando hay algún cambio, etc. Si todo lo anterior estuviera reducido a un tercio (la duración y el mame) me hubiera gustado bastante, pero del tamaño final de la obra, llegó el punto en el que me urgía decir "ya párale mano".

Probably the most surprising listening experience for me so far. Being unfamiliar with the genre, I have a narrow, specific sound in my head when I think "jazz," and this album is nothing like it. This seems to have elements of both jazz and classical, and it is simply beautiful to hear.

Had some trouble locating this entire album. There are so many covers of different segments by muliple artists, which just says volumes of Jarrett's performance. I found his techinical skill and improvisational ability to be amazing. This is some beautiful music.

No. Just no, for me.

4 2022 has definitely been the year of jazz discovery for me. I’ve been trying to understand Jazz on a deeper level and it’s been a real challenge at times to be honest. So naturally I was excited when our first Jazz album came up and oh boy this is a really fun record. The sheer amount of skill and understanding of the craft is on full display. For a little while I was thinking this was going to be ‘cocktail party iazz’. Something quiet to throw on in the background while everyone pretends to be fancy, at about 8 minutes into the performance I was surprised. The tonal change engaged me enough to keep going. This is not challenging Jazz and I think that’s the best thing about it. It’s the opposite of cocktail Jazz. It’s the album I put on after a long day at work and want a nice, but not boring drive home. I’ll definitely be listening again and again because I don’t feel like I’ve heard every he has to say yet. It’s not really structured with songs so I can’t name a favorite but I definitely would buy on vinyl.

3 I'm not familiar with Keith Jarrett, but I buckled myself in once I realized it was going to be an hour of instrumental piano improvisation, genuinely unsure of how I would feel about it. One of the first things I noticed was how much this album benefits from the live setting - some people may find the crowd noises and applause annoying, but I thought capturing the captivation Jarrett had over the audience added to his already impressively flawless live performance. While I enjoyed the album, I mostly found it mostly to be relaxing background music while I got work done. I could see myself listening to it again in that scenario, but I don't ever see myself sitting down to listen in my free time. Part 1 was a quick half hour for me, but by the end of Part 2 you definitely feel the full hour. As far as instrumental piano records go, this has gotta be one of the best I've heard (possibly the best), but I just really feel like there's a cap on how floored I can be by that kind of record. At first I was ready to skip this one because I don't think live albums should be on this list, but is it really a live album if it's just piano? Isn't all piano work live? That's my thought at least as I was taken on a journey on the ivories by this guy. And as crazy as it is, I'm a fan of those 26 minute tracks of just calming piano music.

A live album, but really not your typical live album. Sort of like that live jazz album we had, this one is, as far as I could tell, a solo piano concert. The talent here is off the charts, some phenomenal playing. I liked two of the four songs, but they also spanned 26 and 15 minutes each so I'm not sure how much of those two songs really caught me. Regardless, this was a pretty cool and easy listen. Favorite tracks: Pt. I, Pt. II. Album art: Nothing to write home about, just a guy at a piano. Then again, that's exactly what we got, so no hard feelings. 3.5/5

He is obviously very good. A very listenable album but the structure…free flowing, stream of consciousness…makes it difficult to really focus and it all gradually just melts together.

Was completely unfamiliar with this, and it's a pretty flawless solo jazz piano performance and recording. Gorgeous.

I was expecting something more jazzy... The recording is great, so is the songwriting, but I felt it lacked more energy. Listened to this while reading, and it quickly merged into the background (not necessarily in a bad way).

Alright for a piano album.

Genre: ECM Style Jazz 3/5 The Köln Concert, a 60+ minute improvised solo performance, performed by a damn good pianist in Keith Jarrett, is pretty good. It also holds the distinction of being the highest-selling album in its field: solo jazz, as well as the best-selling piano album ever. Widely renowned, and loved by many both in and out of the genre, it has enjoyed a cult status unlike any other jazz album preceding or following it. Released by ECM Records, a label known for mainstreaming the jazz sounds of the time, it fit perfectly amongst a wide variety of releases that the general populace were beginning to enjoy. For my tastes, though, this is an album where I can 1. note how genuinely tremendous the playing is here, and how amazing it is to consider that it's all improvised, and 2. say that I enjoyed it just fine. Ranging from near-pop vamps to smooth jazz piano licks, the entire performance spans the emotional strata, and features some interesting artifacts in the mix, including deep breaths in and out, acoustic foot tapping, and brief moans as Keith starts to really dig his own improv work. Playing on a piano in the middle of a German concert hall, it's impressive to hear the quality of performance that it is, but most of that is clearly studio manipulated reverb. No puny concert hall in Germany is that echoey. Overall, this is an album that I don't think I'll necessarily revisit, but one that I think will REALLY hit some other jazz folks well. Good listen.

I was very impressed just listening to this, but the backstory added another star to the score. What an amazing piece of work that almost didn't happen due to one mixup after another. I wasn't expecting the groans but somehow they added another level of authenticity. The Spotify recommendations that came after this album were great too. This definitely lives up to the book's title.

Essential listening for those who believe "The Firm" is a cinematic masterpiece.

Worth to listen and get lost in the mood

Quite amazing. The story of course but just gets better with every listen. This was the sort of thing I was hoping to find here.

“I’m tired” “I’m hungry” “My back hurts” “This GRAND piano isn’t as big as what I wanted” Oh suck it up jazz wanker, play Rocket Man or something. He did hit some decent notes though.

Actually pretty lovely background music. Has its charm in a "monkeys with typewriters" kind of way. Most of the time it's regular piano playing, but then he'll randomly use some kind of black magic piano cheat code that makes me feel emotions, and I'll be like "God damn okay. Please continue, Keith Jarrett at the Opera House in Cologne".

Whoosh.....that's the sound of this music going right over my head. I just don't "get" it. It sounds impressive and he's obviously a very talented musician, but it just doesn't move or involve me in any way. I'm sure that it's me - not him!

One Show, One Man, and One barely functioning Piano. A fascinating story behind this recording, and the improvised piano work is excellent here. At an hour in length, this wouldn't be something I want to do full returns to, but I am very glad I listened to this. Favourites: Pt. 1, Pt. 2 C

Listened Before? N Well, this was a surprise. I actually enjoyed this jazz piano album more than I thought I would. It does feel very 70s to me, but that may be because I've heard it before when I was a kid and didn't realize it or something. Anyway it was solid and not boring or repetitive. My highest rating for an album without vocals. Added to Library? N

Have never heard of this concert or Keith Jarret, really enjoyed this on first listen, then after listening about the story of the live show and this was improvised blew me away, this really is a masterpiece and deserves the full 5 stars.

Love the man, love his improvisations, put up with his strange howling. However, I much prefer his trio settings. I know everyone loves this record, but I find it a bit ponderous.

Incredible performance. I do believe that all of this was improvisational, as Jarrett's occasional whoops sound like he's even impressing himself. The valleys give way to amazing peaks.

J’avais écouté cet album il y a vingt ans, parce qu’on nous présentait ça à l’université comme un moment important dans la carrière de Keith Jarrett et dans l’histoire du jazz. Le fait que tout était complètement improvisé et que tout s’était mal passé durant la préparation du spectacle était mis de l’avant pour nous convaincre de la qualité du pianiste. À l’époque, j’avais trouvé ça un peu quétaine et ennuyeux. Aujourd’hui, je pense être plus apte à trouver ça intéressant. C’est en fait très intéressant et ça teinte tout ce qu’il a fait après, et pas seulement en solo.

2e écoute de cet album en peu de temps. Voici ce que j'en avais dit: "J'aime comment il chante ce qu'il joue. C'est fou de penser que l'ensemble de l'oeuvre est improvisée et qu'il a adapté son jeu à cause des contraintes techniques de l'instrument. Pour un live, c'est un bon enregistrement."

I respect the talent but not my thing at all.

For an album that is solely recorded with one instrument and was improvised, and considering the distuptive circumstances a Jarrett had with the wrong piano, the long drive and barely eating due to his restaurant order arriving late, The Köln Concert is something to be proud of. The ultimate example of When Life Gives You Lemons... I do have to say my respect for this album is a bit more than my actual enjoyment I got from this. A bit cynical I know, but I just didn't love it.

Beautiful background music

4/22/2022 Today's Album: "The Köln Concert" by Keith Jarrett - This is a really excellently performed improv piano concerto recorded in Cologne, Germany in 1975. All that really needs to be said is this mf can play some piano. Throw out what immediately comes to mind when you think piano concerto because this performance travels from so many different levels of energy and ways of playing it feels really fresh and exciting (at least upon first listen). It's insanely well recorded for being live and you can even hear when he feels really proud of himself for something and lets out a little laugh or cums in his pants a little. I think the first part is a little bit more of a slog to get to, but it definitely doesn't feel like it's full 26 minute runtime. Sometimes the sounds he's letting out are even a little concerning, but the music is good enough to warrant it. I really like how upbeat and lively the first half of part A of part 2 is and then how it slows down into this kind of dark and slow section. All the way through the different speeds and grooves, he's just playing the fuck out of the piano. The chord structures feel new and interesting, but it doesn't feel like he goes off the rails too much. Part B is a lot more brooding and really made me notice just how much interplay and coordination there is between the left and right hands throughout this whole album. The transitions between different moods are also done really well and make it feel like a really cohesive experience. Part B really takes off as it develops and just does a beautiful job of transitioning from idea to idea while building this atmosphere. Part C made me notice that this guy is just creating such solid groves solely out of the way he is hitting the piano keys while also just playing some of the most technically and musically impressive piano playing I may have ever heard. He has so much control over the keys and the fact this whole thing is improv just blows my mind. Part C is only 7 minutes and therefore ends the album off in a really digestible and satisfying way. I think he even may incorporate some melodies from the other 2 parts which is pretty insane when you think of just how much this guy is making up on the spot. The entire album is just a fantastic performance that is great to just sit down and contemplate life to. It's beautiful and unique and musically dense and I think anyone with any sort of classical music and jazz background will love this piece of music. Why oh why did I wait so long to listen to this album? Growing up my father was always telling me I had to listen to this album and the whole story behind it but I never followed through. I should have earlier. I love Jarrett's piano playing here. To think it's all improvised. So fantastic.

A bit of an atypical ECM album, yet very typical ECM album: none mainstream jazz packing a punch that makes one wonder why, exactly, it isn't mainstream. Not my typical kind of music, yet made of stuff that could warm a soul on a dark cold night (with the help of capable hi-fi).

I wasn't expecting to enjoy this, having been subjected to some of that modal stuff, hard bop, and other totally unmusical styles of jazz. I read a review that said he improvises, which is usually code for harsh music from technical types who like to show off their skills. Or would he just play discordant chords, which seems to be another jazz piano trait. NO! This is lovely, melodic, mostly peaceful music that can play away in the background, but is quite glorious to hear with headphones on. He understands melody and phrasing and has the happy knack of knowing when it's time to change things up.

Cool jazz and pop piano grooves and melodies. Pleasant to listen. I think I liked the first 25 minutes best and then some later bits of the album which reminded me of Rachmaninov's piano concertos. A high 3.

FIVE STARS An all-time classic. This record encapsulates a moment that's just simply magical. Among other things, Keith Jarrett is known for his piano improvisations drifting between jazz and classical, and this one here is a keeper that will entrance you with its melodies and intense ostinatos. Some experts will probably tell you this is *not* Jarrett's best live album, yet maybe it's just snobbery on their part. This thing here is definitely one of the best entry points into his universe (one I wish I had taken the time to know a little better--maybe in the years to come, who knows?). As is usually the case with those five-stars albums, I won't write a full-blown review about this particular record, because others have already written wonderful stuff about it and there's not much I can add that I feel could be relevant and interesting. It's just a gem. Go and listen to it a.s.a.p. OH MY GOD. My favorite piano record of all time! Completely improv’d- I believe this is still the highest selling solo improv record of all time. Absolutely stunning, Keith knows his way around 88 keys better than just about anyone.

I found this best listening late at night when I could concentrate. It grew on me as initially I hadn't the patience to sit for 26 mins when I tried it in the morning. The guy is just so talented and the back story to the concert makes you wonder how good it could have been although maybe it was amazing because of the adversity?

Celui-ci a ce-jour-là remplacé George Michael au pied levé qui devait à l'origine se produire devant le public lgbt-friendly de Cologne mais a eu un empêchement de dernière minute. N'ayant rien préparé, Keith s'assoit devant son piano et se sent très vite galvanisé par les « youhou » et autre « youhihou » émanant de la fosse. À mi-concert, il est déstabilisé par la montée sur scène d'un fan bien décidé à lui couper ses pointes abîmées à l'aide d'un peigne et d'une paire de ciseaux. La sécurité intervient très vite et le concert se ira jusqu'à son terme sans encombre.

Cet album, comme de nombreux autres, a été marqué de la patte du célébre Jim Morrisson. Nous sommes en 1975, dans le célèbre RheinEnergie Stadium. Après une victoire de l'Allemagne face à la Suède scéllée grâce à un doublé de Lukas Podolski, enfant de la ville, un concert sera organisé mettant en scène le jazzman Keith Jarett. Ce dernier devait venir proposer une heure de show, offrant son fabuleux piano-voix à la population homosensible de Cologne. Ce dernier sera accompagné de Jim Morrison à la technique, qui devra s'occuper de toute l'ingénieurie sonore, comme à son habitude. Quelques heures avant le concert, Jim monte sur scène, équipé de son crayon derrière l'oreille, et procéda aux derniers ajustements. Il tourna notamment le microphone en orbite sur 3.5 tours, avant de s'écrier "Là c'est bon, tout est prêt". La suite, vous la connaissez certainement désormais. Keith Jarrett va chanter une heure durant dans le micro, sans se douter que ce dernier ne captait absolument pas sa voix. Le public, un peu décontenancé, apprécia cependant cette heure instrumentale.

It's amazing especially looking at the circumstances in which this concert happened. Keith Jarret had mild food poisoning, he was playing on wrong piano and there was some delay to everything that happened. Even with those hurdles he managed to perform one of the best (recorded) piano jazz concerts.

There are some amazing moments on this album. I find it really poignant those moments when he struggles to find the groove and then suddenly it hits and the flow is just incredible. Some people are bothered by his vocalizations and I admit that it can become somewhat distracting but when you learn to listen around the vocalizing, to close your eyes and let the music wash over you it is a really all encompassing experience. 5 🌟

Well folks, you heard it here first. I like a solo jazz piano album. Dude's complex with his whole orchestration, and the story of how this album came to be is also great. I also like that Keith Jarrett sued Steely Dan.

Wanted to appreciate this more but at the end of the day it wasn’t for me. Even tried to give it a second chance and couldn’t really get past part I. Undeniably impressive skill and talent especially given circumstances, but I couldn’t personally enjoy it.

improve jazz kinda brazy sometimes. couldn't handle this regularly. but it hit somewhat for a focused work sesh

Keith is a fantastic player and his music is interesting and beautiful. I’m just not a huge fan of this style of playing.
