Reviews (page 12 of 13)

This still hasn’t convinced me that Bruce Springsteen can sing, but I can appreciate that Americans and especially those from his era would really like his storytelling. The sax in the songs is fantastic.

80's pop/rock. I don't think it's that interesting.

Pretty good! Obviously like the famous songs most but surprised how many I knew.

Some really good songs, some that I always felt we're overrated. Still a decent album.

It was OK. I really only like born in the USA and that’s about it. Not really my style

There are some iconic songs on here, and after listening I have a new appreciation for his lyrics and themes. It's undeniably a great album. Unfortunately I find his style a bit grating and it's not something I have a huge desire to listen to again.

Schlechte 3 Sterne.

It’s good. Reminds me of the Office

Als Zeitdokument interessant, als Musik eher weniger mein Fall

some great classics, not so sure on the tracks I had never heard, these are sad songs dressed up kinda poppy and happy which is wierd

Rock Singer/songwriter, legendarisk, amerikansk, fortællende

Another that wasn't really my style. Springsteen really does have a way with story telling, and it might be one that grows on me. Top picks were I'm On Fire and Dancing In The Dark.

Don't mind the fucken boss

This album probably wouldn’t have been anything without the production, but also I hate the production.

I didn’t like born in the USA overall three out of five

Not my style. Not my cake

You guys might recall that many years ago I was in to "we shall overcome," a 2006 album by Springsteen that is largely folk music. That album is a good bit cooler than this one. Of course, we have to analyze this from the lens that this was just the kind of music that people did at the time. I would say this album was a pattern B: the one song I recognized, the title track, was probably the least interesting. There was some half decent stuff among the rest of the tracks, but not good enough to get a three. His voice is unique and I don't mind it.

I don't enjoy the big snare on 2 and 4 or Bruce's yelling, so "I'm On Fire" is probably my favorite song. The melodies are not deft, either. Very in-your-face. I do appreciate the storytelling, but I can't get past the quality of the music.

Lots o' 80s era hits on here. But I must confess, The Boss has never really been my cuppa. Of the hits, the standouts for me are: I'm on Fire and Dancing in the Dark. But overall, this album is just middling rock with call backs to 50s era rock, simplistic keys and drums, and while the lyrics are generally good in the critical, obervational sense, It just doesn't move me. I'm glad the Boss and the E-Street band exist and I'm a fan of Springsteen using his platform to speak up for the working class. But that doesn't garner any more stars, unfortunately.

Probably really a 3 I guess but I know I didn't enjoy it that much, and I've never been even lukewarm on the hits here. So for me, I'm not coming back to this one

2nd worst thing about NJ

Not a fan of Bruce

too motivational/cringy lyrics

Dancing in the Dark is my jam and I appreciate the protest songs but my god The Boss really loves a loud fucking song, every song has a backbeat and an organ.

Kamo sreće da niko nikad nije rođen in the usa.

Ok this one actually pissed me off a little bit. Soundslop.

Not a fan of Born in the USA and all the sounds kind of sounded the same

Retawded

RAHHH🦅🦅🦅 FREEDOM RAHHH🦅🦅🦅🦅 AMERICA BEST COUNTRY RAHHH🦅🦅🦅🦅 WE ARE THE GREATEST COUNTRY IN THE WHOLE WORLD Party in the U.S.A. is miles ahead of Born in the U.S.A. I hate that song with a passion. It makes me hate that country even more. IT'S NOT EVEN THE HIT ON THIS GODFORSAKEN ALBUM???? Damn, I’ve lived a lie. Words cannot begin to describe how much I hate Bruce Springsteen, so I will not even attempt to do that. This is so American it makes me want to puke. Am I too European for this? Maybe. But I hate America with the utmost passion. Come after me; come to Romania if you even know where that is. Transylvania, to be as specific as possible. No, it’s not a country of its own, and no, it wasn't invented for Hotel Transylvania. With all of this out of the way, "Downbound Train" is fine; hands down the best song on this album. "I'm on Fire" is really eh on lyrics. What's the men's obsession with calling every woman "little girl"? Or maybe she was a little girl, who knows? Or he is the little girl, since he "wakes up with the sheets soaking wet." It's okay, Bruce; many men wet the bed at your big boy age. I don't even know which possibility is worse: that one, or the fact that he's cumming on the bed... ohhh, sweat. Yeah, that's a possibility too. A boring one at that. Is "Bobby Jean" also a girl's name? Or a nickname? Or is he crying over a man? It would make more sense for the Republican crowd. Okay, I'm on "Glory Days" now, and I have a theory. There's this Bobby guy mentioned who got divorced from that girl in the song who has two kids with him. What if, now stay with me, what if it's the same Bobby as the one in "Bobby Jean"? What if they were having a secret, scandalous, illicit affair, then Bobby got caught and left town out of pure shame and possibly death threats, since this is the South? "Dancing in the Dark" is the hit on this album? I've never heard it, but again, I'm Romanian. It's kinda eh. It's fine but so boring; it sounds so Bruce Springsteen, I don't know what else I can say. Is it sampling something, or is that something sampling it? I swear I recognize that tuh nu nu nu. In conclusion: I hate Bruce Springsteen, I hate America, and I hate country music. This album is fine, I guess, if you like country, but otherwise, no, just no. It's not unbearable; I don't want to outright somehow explode my eardrums, but I would never in a million years actually put any of these songs on. NEVER.

The only good thing about getting this album is that I'll never get it again.

like when he yells and says rhgbruhughfhugh, which is every song. I like I'm on Fire and Dancing In the Dark

I’ll start by saying Springsteen is not for me but I can appreciate the album for what it is and acknowledge that his music resonates with a lot of working class folks. This album is monotonous and essentially an hour of the same song over and over again… I do appreciate the use of 80’s style synth, but overall it sounds over produced or something. It would be nice to hear a stripped down Springsteen album that let the voice and lyrics shine more and have those elements create an atmosphere- a’la “I’m on Fire” Then again this album is more about being bright and anthemic, it is what it is. The man is an icon in the same vein as Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Neil Young, Elvis etc. and I found myself wondering if he and artists like him aren’t all just industry plants using the Americana mythos to promote some kind of nationalist government propaganda. The style is a mix of folksy singer-song writer, country music, conventional rock and 80’s pop. I also feel like I can hear a prelude to white boy indie-folk artists like Elliot Smith, Conner Oberst, Ben Ginbard etc. in there too. At the end of the day, this album is more vibe than tangible substance, my mind wanders while listening… it just doesn’t hold me or my attention long enough to start caring. Also, let’s be honest y’all, man’s voice is obnoxious, is he singing or yelling at me from across a crowded bar? I can hardly understand what he’s saying half the time

I don't understand who this music is for. It sounds like it's trying to evoke the gool old days that never really existed, but the lyrics go in a different direction. Maybe that's the point? It's a huge miss for me. I know it's important to some people. It was big in the 80s, when I was a kid. I could not wait for this to be over; it is not for me. Sorry, Bruce.

Not for me whatsoever.

me no country magram cudi ar iyo

Some classics on this album but it's not my style.

#330/1001. The boss shows how it is done. What is done, asks us, the employees.

It's ok not my thing stand-outs :- I'm goin' down Glory days

I listened to the album twice. At the first time it was awful 😭😭. The second time I must've been in another mood and focused more on the music, and then I've found the album creative. When you listen closely there is a lot going on. If I could I would give this album 2.5, but I can't so here's 2

The title track is pretty funny for being co-opted by jerks across the political spectrum for years while not listening to the lyrics, BUT boy that melody is grating. Otherwise, it's alright. The writing isn't much to note imo, but it's evocative enough to paint some interesting pictures and scenarios in the song. I don't know if I like the E Street Band themselves, the groove isn't my cup of tea. Not a bad album, though. 2.

Soy argentino, esto es basura

Depressing. I like Bruce but meh

Relisten Don't like this type of Springsteen that much. There might be something to be said artistically about the dichotomy between the on-brand, downtrodden Americana lyrics in comparison to the more up beat and poppy sound of the album, but I just don't think it works, I think he does better when the instrumentation matches the tone of his lyrics. Fav Tracks: Bobby Jean, Dancing in the Dark Least Favorite: Working on the Highway, Glory Days 2.5/5

Supongo que está bien, pero a mi no me gusta.

thaaaaat's dad rock. 2

First, I love Bruce as a person. As I write this review, March 2026, he's one of the few celebrities that has spoken out against the U.S. dictatorship without fear of recriminations from the corporations that are supporting the regime, so bless him for that. It doesn't really make me like this album, though. It is the sort of celebratory Americana that I find a bit off-putting in content and plodding in form, although there are a couple of enjoyable songs for me on here in "No Surrender" and "Dancing In The Dark." I liked previously reviewed Born To Run more than this. It was just as exuberant and just as earnest, but with a much lighter touch.

Just a few too many of these albums on the list, I'm kinda over it now

1st song was great the rest was kind of eh.

- nice synths - i like my hometown

Think this is too mainstream pop rock for me. The sound is not for me, decent and compelling lyricism from time to time (Downbound Train), but most doesn't click with me. Maybe due to the sound. Maybe I'm not white enough, or listened to too many derivatives of rock to experience this as a new, surprising genre. Rating at the time I'm listening to "I'm Goin' Down": 2.5-3.0 / 5 Final rating: 2.5/5

Kinda meh, the one song I quite liked was dancing in the dark although I still prefer the version that one guy perfomed on The Voice. Wouldn't listen to again

i wasn't born in the usa generic country music with unexpected twist about dying america cover me sounds like the dying america ghostbusters and bobby jean is decent. really bad to write music using horrible events in history only for it to be generic ¡boooring! man narrating a tragedy over an almost monotonous rhythm. ¡other example of using horrible events in history to make your music! delfín quishpe did a much better job in the entertaining part with his iconic song "torres gemelas" making the 9 11 2.753 deceased and america proud! ¡he even used the rhythm of his twin tower song to make ads for cooking oil! that's the real american spirit! and hes now in jail :(

Such an... interesting album? I dunno, maybe I'm not American enough as an American to truly appreciate this album.

Beyond the two obvious ones, I was quite surprised by this album. I was expecting a whole album of stadium American rock but mostly this just sounds like a pub or hotel band. Definitely what you would think was a really good hotel band, but still one that you would be watching just because you are on a family holiday. Music is fine, singing is fine. I can't quite see why this has the accolades that it has. I was expecting a more visceral reaction but generally listened thinking "This is ok" then promptly forgot all about it.

An unfortunate miss from The Boss. Springsteen proved he could transition to pop stardom while continuing to sing about blue-collar folks, their concerns, and political consciousness, but the songwriting suffers from the synths and and sterile stadium production of the 80’s. I’ve gone through stages of hating, then appreciating, then disliking this album again, and I think this round of listenings has cemented my opinions. “Dancing in the Dark” still rules though.

Surprisingly I still don’t enjoy this genre or Bruce. 2 stars

I was not born in the USA

It’s rly not that good. no songs particularly stood out to me not a fan. love dancing in the dark tho

ya lo escuché 😖

give me a full Lana cover album of this

Cheesy Americana.

Вайбы make America grate again. Педо посылы и нытье в стиле взрослого белого гетеро мужика. Инструментал приятный btw

Nothing very memorable here other than the big singles. Felt like it hasn't aged well, as I was listening - a very 80s album.

ai esse bicho é chato demais.... música de americano para americanos, to fora

I knew there will be day when this app recomends this... thing to me. This one album which has song on it that I hate THE MOST. I don't really know why, but that constant repeating of Born in the U.S.A., blah blah blah, I just can not stand it. But let's be objective. The second song wasn't that bad. Yes the cover still iritates me but that is just detail. Overall this album isn't THAT bad as I thought it will be, but I won't listen to it again.

I didn't need to hear the same song another 11 times.

Booooorn in the usa!!!!

Listening to this album in full feels like I'm at a fourth of July party with an incredibly lazy DJ. The hits are hits, the misses are real misses (make no mistake, I'm far from a Springsteen fan).

pretty cool from Bruce, not something that's in my rotation always

I've always found Bruce to be quite boring and relistening to this didn't do much to change my opinion. I do think this is one of the better Springsteen albums since it does have one or two songs I don't mind.

uhh nie lubie amerykanskiego country (or smth) rocka

I’ve tried but I’m just not a Springsteen fan. Really liked the Glory Days song though

A few good songs. On the whole it’s not for me.

2 stars is really generous. Dancing in the Dark is a solid track but with all due respect to the Boss, the rest is borderline unlistenable

Basic rock album. Need I say more?

Not really my type i like music from the 80s but not this album

Wouldn't have rated highly if it wasn't established American darling Bruce Springsteen turning this out. This doesn't speak to me, and I'm not a Springsteen fan, so it's yet another bit of clutter on this list. 2/5, you can die in peace without this one.

not my cup of tea but i can appreciate it for what it is fav track - i’m on fire, my hometown

I’ve never really been a big Bruce fan and this album did not change my mind. Plus some of the lyrics are a little sketch.

Not a massive fan of Springsteen’s voice and I find it makes a lot of the songs sound the same

No way to sugar coat it, I do not care for The Boss.

I can appreciate it, but I don't need to listen to it frequently. The parts that I enjoyed were elements of style that I enjoy more in other artists.

Cover Me has some nice blues guitar. Other than that there's not much here that's for me.

It's fine. Top track: title track

- I'm on Fire - Glory Days

I've never been a fan of Springsteen, and still am not.

Do I hate BS or his superfans more? Hard to say at this point. Heartland music is a genre I cannot get behind and I've always lived there. Maybe if I was from New Jersey I'd get it instead of being the redneck I am. BS has never felt authentic, and his music has never been challenging of anything. This is his highwater mark - commercial and pop oriented rock and roll. Truly a man of the people.

On Springsteen's seventh album his considerable songwriting talents are weaponized to produce missiles aimed at the top of the charts. Gone are the complex chords and dense (but potent) arrangements of previous albums like *Born To Run*, here replaced with simple strumming, shiny synthesizers and a snare drum set to "stun". Also, unlike those past albums, the tone shifts erratically across the tracks here - *BITUSA* opens with the rage of the title number and then two songs later it's girl-chasing time down in "Darlington County". It's not all dumbed-down Springsteen-lite though. The aforementioned title track unleashes apocalyptic fury, with the anger palpable in Bruce's vocals. "Bobby Jean" has enough of the Springsteen drama of yore to raise goosebumps. "Dancing In The Dark" has a simple synth hook but enough drive to lift it above the rest. The Boss' batting average back in his glory days was a lot higher, though; the .250 average he sports here is barely above the Mendoza Line.

Very familiar as someone who remembers when this was released. I appreciate the message, but it is just not that compelling. I prefer many of his other albums to this.

Jaja the Boss, oh oh oh wat is ie goed hè. Rasmuzikant.

I grew up in New Jersey and have had Springsteen's music shoved down my throat since the 70s. He's a very talented song writer but I've never liked his yell sing vocals. Musically this album is more pop rock than his earlier work and the 80s overdone production does it no favors

So far this list has been a bit disappointing. Lots of albums from the 70’s and 80’s that are “classic albums” but to be honest they all kinda suck, this album included. There’s a few hits that absolutely slap; dancing in the dark, I’m on fire, and the title track, but the rest of the album feels like filler. I can appreciate Bruce’s place in American culture and his immense success, but I have to also recognise I’m not the target audience so I’m probably not going to enjoy it the same way others might

I'm surprised I don't really care for this.

This actually confirmed my belief that Mr S can write a good song. I just wish he'd stick to that. Don't like the way he performs songs. Looking back and comparing this to other albums, 2 is the right score.

I usually struggle with a Bruce album. I love so many of his songs, and dislike so many of his cliche hits. This is no exception. Only 4 enjoyable songs on here, and none of them are the big singles.

listening to it is fun. i find myself vibing with it but it just doesn't capture the type of music that i'm into. it's a good album but it's not a fave, personally.

I think Bruce Springsteen is like Nick Cave: you kinda just had to be there. The two big hits off the album (the title track and Dancing In The Dark) are pretty great though. Fav tracks: I'm Goin' Down, Dancing In The Dark

not a great vocalist. Grande folksy instrumental, but honestly lacks soul. Good rhythm and fun at times.

How patriotic

This album just feels like Springsteen lost some of his autenticity that made his previous work appealing. Its very 80's arena rock-esque, which isn't really my vibe anyway, but it doesn't have any punch to it.

Got through half the album. Not my cup of tea.

Some nice

3/10 not my vibe

Best Song of the Album: Glory Days

I tried listening to 4 songs, could barely give one single shit about any of them and had to push the skip button after 3 to 7 seconds, realized life is too short to listen to things I don't like, turned PJ Harvey back on. Would rank this a 1, but it gets 1 extra star for its proximity to PJH. Also, there are better Springsteen albums.

5. born in the usa is good

As boring as expected. Some may enjoy this, but I did not.

Corny.

Right, this album. Well-misunderstood, weirdly popular. Born in the USA has a good backbeat, good drums, but oh god the screaming is awful. 4/5 song, I just...the singing is horrible. Cover Me: phenomenal beat. just great. but, the lyrics are...not there. 3/5. And reasonably, the rest of the album is like that. It's just...the beat, the instrumentals are phenomenal, but the lyrics and singing are not there. Bruce Springsteen cannot sing. Top songs: Born in the U.S.A; Cover Me; I'm on Fire

Never been a big Springsteen fan, although I do respect the man for championing downtrodden blue collars without hypocrisy or demagogy. This album - probably his most misundertood and misappropriated work - doesn't really resonate with me since I'm not American, but I do understand the appeal. Musically, however, I'm not convinced. Except for a couple of appreciable hits, it sounds like very generic mid-80s radio rock, with many of the annoying gimmicks that defined that time period (the cheesy horns and keyboards being the worst offenders). It's just a collection of easy-listening songs that never reach the level of cinematic storytelling that made Born To Run special. Not unpleasant to listen, but definitely not something I'll come back to. 3/10

It could have been a single instead of an album; that would have been a better rating for this album. The only song I liked... is the hit "Born in the USA," which has a special energy; the rest is forgettable and already forgotten.

I don't get it. Bryan Adams gets slated for this kind of cheesy shit, but for some reason Bruce is a critical darling? Not my cup of tea.

I have never been a Bruce fan and if this album is considered his best then I know I never will. Not even the E Street band’s best. Only a few good songs on the album and Bruce still manages to sound like someone’s drunk uncle while singing on those.

Bruce Springsteen is the other artist who in addition to Elvis Costello I have been repeatedly told I should appreciate over my years working in record stores. He’s never done anything for me although I will admit my dislike has mellowed with age. This album has two of the songs by him that I think are somewhat undeniably catchy, “I’m on Fire” & “Dancing In The Dark”. I don’t love the sound of much of the record but this was more listenable to me than Bat Out Of Hell.

I only like Nebraska by Springsteen. This is a bit too rawk for my taste.

Koffor har eg hørt nesten alle sangane fra før

overblown stadium rock - strangled vocals, arm pumping in the air for punctuation, that exhausting snare drum, thumping pianos on the beat, all the simplistic repetitive keyboard parts - partly saved by the gentler I'm On Fire , but overall the sound is desperate, oppressive, bludgeoning

My third Springsteen album and I still do not understand the allure and the magnetism. But I guess people like what they like and so I guess two stars make sense but I still wanna say that I am gonna give his music another chance and see where we land.

Very commercial. Vocals are mediocre.

I’ve never understood the appeal of Bruce Springsteen. He can’t sing. The songs are dull. It’s all a bit YOO ESS AAE for my liking.

This sounds like rock and country's bastard child: Taking the clichés of each genre to make music that tries hard to feel anthemic but falls short. Instead, it demands Springsteen's vocal chords' heoric effort to imbue the music with a feeling of gravity. The lyrics come off as a romantization of "I'm just a simple Joe and life is rough", an experience im not sure Springsteen is actually personally familiar with.

Boomer coded

Boring, overwrought 50s pastiche baloney

Overall: 3/10 My 2nd Springsteen album I've gotten so far, and it's shockingly worse than the 1st one. I just can't stand the man's voice. It's a shame because he seems like a very levelheaded and cool person, and the songs he writes wouldn't be so terrible if somebody else was singing them. I've just genuinely never heard a voice that I dislike more. I want to like it but it's just not possible. I will admit though.....Glory Days is kind of a banger and I always forget The Boss wrote it. Fav Song: Glory Days

It's a well-executed rendition of a musical style that I generally can't stand whatsoever. His vocals got on my nerves a fair bit, and it's all a bit saccharine for me. The nice, warm bass was a positive feature throughout.

Guys, I’m sorry, I hate it. I’m old enough to just come out and say I hate it. Maybe it’s just a 90s punk kid hating anything that was mainstream in the 80s. I want to tell a story about how Reagan and the right misappropriated it and all that, but in the end I just don’t care, I don’t want to listen to it. “I’m On Fire” creeps me out, “Glory Days” creeps me out. I like “Dancing in the Dark” and a few other moments, but honestly I was thrilled when it was over and I could put on Nebraska instead.

eccessivo spirito patriottico album molto monotono, già la terza canzone sembrava avere stessa melodia della prima complessivamente piacevole come sottofondo

Oh, what could've been. Ruined by the E-Street Band, garish production, and too many creepy "little girl" references (and yes...ANY is too many).

I appreciate the message, but it's so big and boisterous all the time, it's hard to endure. I'm on Fire and My Hometown are exceptions.

Not my fave but one or two listenable tracks

I did not like this album when it first came out and, in retrospect, I still don't like it. Banal, jingoistic, and bloated. I only liked 2 tracks: Downbound train and I'm on Fire. The rest, if not banal, are unlistenable, semi-patriotic crap. Bruce SHOULD be embarrassed of this shite. Especially after Nebraska, which is the best thing he's done imo. 2 disappointed stars

I don't hate it There's a few good hits

Wasnt born in the usa

Born In The U.S.A. is actually the worst song on the album

Not really my thing

Pretty surface level and unremarkable musically. Definitely of its time

Continuo a pensare che Springsteen sia una roba creata ad OK per gli americani, incomprensibile per me.

born in the usa 6 cover me 6 darlington county 5 working on the highway 5 downbound train 6 i’m on fire 7 no surrender 6 bobby jean 5 i’m goin down 5 glory days 5 dancing in the dark 7 my hometown 5

★★½

Overrated

Ugh… I just don't get the seemingly universal appeal of Bruce. The second half of the album seemed to hit its stride. When he tries to push beyond his vocal range it just sounds forced, but not in a good way. The lyrics are all stories but just don't really resonate with me. The drumming is all just first and third beats and reminds me of that gif of him dancing, its just simple. I wanted to like it, but it just seems blah.

Glory Days makes me want to vomit. 2 stars, Bruce can, and has done, better.

Stanowczo zbyt amerykańskie

2 stars. A couple of good songs but mostly mediocre. Some concepts dated and hampers enjoyability

Видимо, чтобы понять эту музыку - нужно быть американцем. Очень скучно. Ожидал намного большего

I don’t get the hype behind this guy

good but not as good as Darkness on the Edge of Town Its a car ride typa album

ça va, pas trop mon truc

Referring to women as little/young girls is extremely grating on the ear, even before the aggressive monotony of his delivery. Simplistic compositions. Not a fan.

I hope this is the last Bruce Springsteen album. We get it, the author loved Bruce Springsteen. I don't love BS, I don't even like him, but I don't hate him either.

Few things ooze 1984 for me more than this album. You could not escape the title track or Dancing in the Dark. Listening today I can feel all of the excitement and anxiety of 7th grade like it was yesterday. I didn’t care much for this album back then - the blue collar, railroad/highway worker, drinking at the bar while pining about the past (Glory Days) themes were beyond my 12 year old life experience. The same remains largely true today - this album feels really "mid" - and its value to me now rests in its ability to invoke feelings of an arguably simpler, more optimistic (American exceptionalism) time. 2/5

Day 5- Wasn't a huge fan of this album, i can understand the appeal but there was not much for me to grasp onto this musically or lyrically.

This isn’t good

As a record, it's not that exciting to me, but the singles are classics.

I remember this record sitting in a short stack of CDs in my grandparent’s living room. They weren’t loose; nothing in the house was. Instead, the dozen or so jewel cases were organised into slip shelves either side of a VCR and stereo unit, with the TV sitting king of the pile – appropriate symbolism for the then-biggest whale in the attention economy. I don’t recall the album ever getting played – and on the strength of this listen through, I doubt I’d have really remembered had it been. There are anthems in here, truly era-defining stadium rock gems that have delivered hours upon hours of enjoyment in varied and interesting contexts (Bum The Gibbon’s lockdown-era cover of “Dancing In The Dark” especially) … but as full albums go, there’s plenty in there that’s forgettable too. Still, I won’t soon forget the first time I held that album c.1996 and, in that peculiarly intuitive way only a child can, felt like I understood something about my grandad I didn’t before. The Boss in his blue jeans announced a dimension to my grandad’s character I hadn’t yet had a chance to apprehend; said something about his internal life I’d likely never hear him articulate directly … and would forever need to guess about anyway. And because life’s like that – layer on layer of clues, hues, idiosyncrasies, dust – music’s like that too (or is it the other way around?). Happy birthday, Grandad.

I tried. I was on a scenic drive. It was not good. Maybe just the wrong place and time. Maybe it’s actually not good. I don’t know, but whatever happened between me and these songs and that road… I’ll just never listen again and I am okay with that.

ehh podia morir sin escucharlo

If there is a Bruce Springsteen song worth getting excited about I have yet to hear it. 2*

The unapologetic all star American album. It's got guns, booze, new york and pdf vibes.

He's such a creep, it's disgusting. I'm giving it a 2 because of 2 of the songs that I begrudgingly like (NOT I'm on Fire). This man should be investigated. Clive Davis signed him I mean. Danger.

Consistent throughout but overuse of the cheesy keyboard sound. Top track: I'm Goin' Down / Southbound Train

This is the sound of boomers pining for the “good old days” that never really existed

Gostei de 2 músicas, o resto foi mid

Not my thing at all but Dancing in the Dark is a floor filling banger and Bobby Jean has some wicked sax.

Huge album for people who like boring music

While I like the fella’s politics, I’m not sure about his music. The title track still grates on me and sounds awfully 80’s

meh (':

this is what bland sounds like to me i think. but songs like cover me and parts of no surrender im a fan of. not the most challenging music but a challenge for me to listen to nonetheless because of genre preferences i think.

I do like when it sounds melancholic but it stays too long being upbeat which doesn't suit his voice

God damn Bruce Springsteen. His music is far too mediocre to get the amount of radio play it does, but I guess some people must like it.

Ce serait pas le chanteur le plus surestimé de l'histoire notre ami Bruce, avec ses caisses claires qui résonnent et ses trompettes merdiques ?

I get why people like Springsteen, there's a certain anthemic quality to what he does but as I've said before, heartland rock just doesn't really do it for me. It's fine, I can listen to it but for my tastes, I find it to be a bit 'bright', a bit plodding and just lacking a bit of bite. I believe he's very good live and 'Id probably get more out of it in that environment.

God bless américa, Trump for president my country is the whole continent cause i dont know shit about geography. Yessss.... no.

School went mad when he played Roundhay park in Leeds. I'd never heard of him. I was surprised by how many of these songs I knew. The rhythm on I'm on fire is good.

Really quite disappointing. Uninspired both musically and lyrically.

more tolerable than the other bruce springsteen albums on the list but nothing of note on here either

Not a Springsteen fan!

I tried

A very difficult album to listen to. The vocals are grating and flat in many of the songs. However, I did find a couple of the songs earworming my brain afterwards to save it from being a 1*

Bruce Springsteen is 'Basically Fine: The Musical'. Nothing about his music stirs any kind of feeling in me. Even his biggest hits - both of which are on this album - leave me with a feeling of ambivalent indifference. I can't understand how anyone could dislike this music, and I can't understand why anyone could like it. It's magnolia dad rock which as a non-american has zero cultural meaning.

not as awesome as i thought but respect to bruce’s politics!

Couple of good songs, but mostly a bit middle of the road.

Born in the U.S.A is obviously a banger. The rest of the album was lost on me a bit.

The hits are undeniable, in saying that some of the deep cuts on the album are quite a chore to get through and really break up the enjoyment of the album and make it hard to listen to as a whole project and had to use the weekend to listen to it. Again the hits are what save this album from being rated lower, I might come back to this later in life and enjoy it more but right now not so much

I never understood the appeal of Springsteen. I listened to this album and I just don’t like his music. It’s one of those things where there’s nothing wrong with the music, it just doesn’t click with me at all.

It is such an American album from the title track to baseball nostalgia, I just feel like I am out of context here to really connect with lyrics even after reading up on it. Musically it haven't grasped me either.

I used to really enjoy Springsteen, but admittedly this one did not stand the test of time for me.

I feel like I should like this more because of what album it is, but...I just didn't. Not my style.

Can’t argue with the title track, but the rest is thin gruel. A pop sheen over grit that never quite surfaces. Wonder if the rednecks ever noticed it’s not a victory lap but a eulogy.

I love Bruce Springsteen. But I kind of hate this album. It feels like a parody of Springsteen. The magic of his best stuff is that it feels very grounded and relatable. He's able to tell the stories of blue collar Americans in such an authentic way that you believe the stories are his (even though you know they're not). But on this album, it feels like he’s run out of that magic. It honestly just sounds like a rich guy pretending to blue collar and failing miserably. It's 80s Bruce cosplaying as 70s Bruce with a synthesizer duct taped to his hands. While I can’t say for sure that the lyrics on this album are worse than on his older material. What I can say is that the 80s production and synth work really fails these songs and creates the cheesy, fake vibe. There’s always been a hint of cheesiness in his work but I think the grounded, gritty 70s pub rock production reinforced the authenticity of the songs and made you believe. But on this album, the glossy sound and questionable synth work amplify the cheese factor. It becomes a strange smelling elephant in the room. This leaves the album feeling like a shiny label driven imitation of his better work. He even sorta backs up my point on Glory Days without realizing it: And I hope when I get old, I don’t sit around thinking about it, but I probably will. […] Well, the time slips away, leaves you with nothing, mister, but boring stories of Glory days. Springsteen doesn’t realize it, but on this album he’s already the guy trying to reclaim his glory days (his run of classic albums that lead him to this point). His "boring stores" are the tracks on this damn album and the many albums he'll put out in the future. Sadly, he'll never recreate the success of this album or the quality of his previous work. It's over... and he doesn't even know it yet. Side note: I fucking hate Glory Days. I always have and I think I always will. Additional side note: Glory Days is my Dad’s favourite Springsteen song. I hated it before I knew this, but it makes sense since we have almost zero in common musically. Weirdly the songs that feel like new territory for Bruce are the ones that are stone cold classics. When he stops trying to tell Springsteen-ian stories and instead tackles something more personal and brief, he writes 2 of the greatest synth rock bangers of all time: I’m on fire and Dancing in the Dark. These 2 songs completely cary this album. I’m going to give this album 2 stars and those 2 songs are doing 90% of the work to get that rating. I want a whole album of Bruce singing songs like these… but that is not what we got on Born in the U.S.A. These 2 songs actually stick out like beautiful sore thumbs in the track list. The rest of the songs feel like old Bruce with an ugly new coat of paint, while Dancing and Fire feel like a brand new Bruce fit for the future of music. It’s a shame we didn’t get more of this. Side note: I still love that music video with Courtney Cox. Additional Side note: I got into Springsteen through a scene in The Place Beyond The Pines where Ryan Gosling is holding a dog and swaying to Dancing in the Dark. There are so many better Springsteen albums than this. Listen to Born to Run, Darkness on the Edge of Town, The River or Nebraska. Those 4 albums came right before this one and they’re all way better. It’s wild that the most pure, authentic release in his whole catalogue, Nebraska, came out right before this album. It makes zero sense. Additional notes….

Cover me - It’s a good track. Maybe the third best song on the album. I dig its lounge-y swagger. Born in the U.S.A. - I want to love this track. I love parts of it. The lyrics are great. The energy of his voice is aggressive in a good way. I love the politics of it from what I can glean. Unfortunately, it's really brought down by the synth work and the production. There’s that famous anecdote of Regan playing it at his rallies, not realizing that it’s satire and that it’s actually anti-American. Normally this story is told in support of the greatness of Born in the U.S.A…. but to me it’s actually evidence of my issue with track. Is it good satire if no-one gets the joke and people instead take it literally? Trump played it at his rallies in the past 10 years, so people still haven’t figured out the song’s true message. Even knowing the truth, it can be hard for me not to hear it as a pro-America anthem unless I’m really paying attention to the lyrics. The production screams all American hero and it can be hard to get past that. I can see Hulk Hogan tearing a shirt while it plays. I think if the synth tone had been a bit more sour or gritty or something… if the production had been more subversive… it could have gone a long way to supporting the satire of the track…. And made it actually cool. Darlington county - Reminds me of Hey You by BTO in a bad way with it’s annoying shalala chorus. Working on the highway - Feels like a goofy 50s pastiche with more cheesy synth/organ. I didn’t like it. Im goin’ down - Sounds vaguely like Wagon Wheel? It’s a solid track I guess. Glory Days - Fuck Glory Days. I hope I never hear this song again.

1. uza - 1.5 2. cover - 1.5 2. county - 1 4. uuorking - 1 5. train - 1.5 6. fire - 2 7. zurrender - 1 8. bobby - 1 9. douun - 1 10. glory - 1.5 11. dark - 2 12. touun- 1.5

I’ve tried, but I just can’t seem to get into Bruce in the 80’s. He was supposed to be the next Bob Dylan but instead turned into a caricature of himself. There are for sure classics on this album but too much pop washes it all away.

maybe this is the MONDAY talking, but I hate this and I never want to listen to it again. "Born in the USA" has 2 chords in the whole fucking song. adding 1 star because I feel like an iota of respect is due to Bruce for pissing off Trump.

This is the Springsteen I was expecting to hear on this list, not that I particularly want it. This is butt rock for a construction site before butt rock became more about butts lyrically than just aurally. I don’t even like the hits. I never have. It’s not even bad it’s just boring unimaginative dreck. Best track on here is “My hometown” which chronicles the story of a quintessentially American shithole. It’s depressing but it made me feel something and that makes this album a 2.

Really don’t dig The Boss brand of wall of sound, or the anti-nostalgia of the 80s when this shit was everywhere, but the simpler tunes are pretty great.

I’m just gonna say it… I think every song on the album sounds basically the same except I’m on Fire and Dancing in the Dark.

Just not my thing. It’s not bad, just not for me.

Not my favorite, repetitive

Most songs here if not all give the vibe of a movie with a kid running downstairs to eat breakfast and catch the bus for school. His voice is alot more tolerable than Born to Run, but its still has this showman twang to it that I'm just not a fan of.

Wellllll this album. Oh man, this is nostalgia central. My dad loved this album and would put it on when we had yard work to do, which is really funny because my dad's go-to was usually Kenny G or Fleetwood Mac. But Bruce came out when we had work to get done. Whether it was working on the deck or fixing the car, he was our soundtrack. I am not an enormous fan of Bruce. I have tried multiple times over the years to get into the album but have never been able to round the corner. I don't know if it is because of my childhood or if he just isn't my jam. It is hard to say. What I do know is that this album is iconic of 80s Americana Rock n ' Roll. There is something about this album: summer, fresh cut grass, barbeques, and living the best life you can. Or maybe that is the nostalgia talking again. I will definitely listen to this album today and anytime someone else puts it on.

I've made no secret in past reviews that I don't have much love for Springsteen. I think his whole schtick is overblown. Credit where it's due, he writes some popular songs and made a storied career, but its just generally not for me. Glad to get the title track out of the way. Its incredibly catchy and obvious why it took off, but I have grown to hate the chorus due to overplay. I do, however, find it funny that so many politicians, etc. play this as if it is a positive anthem of the US. When in fact if you listen to the lyrics its all about sending our kids out to fight foreign wars and "kill the yellow man." I've made it through 7 full tracks and I'm honestly proud of myself for this feat. I cannot do 5 more. Something about Springsteen always makes me think of Christmas music. Not in the excited, this is the holiday season sort of way. More in the sense that the songs feel overtly materialistic and insincere. This is probably more me than the music, but I just can't do it. While this isn't dogshit, it still isn't something I want to consume. Personal enjoyment is really low on this one... giving this a 2 because a 1 feels too harsh.

this seems like extremely country ( well duhhhhh) but like this is the most countryeyyy album i have ever listened to. its quite shouty. his accent is annoying me . im picturing him like a cowboy and a farmer mixed. again quite shouty. i feel very rural. one song sounded like it belonged in the teen beach movie. its just a bit average. like i feel like this week is just complete weird albums like so unknown. i dont even know. just like not very me. makes me want to say yeee hawwww.

This album was inescapable when I was 10 years old, and honestly I would have been fine NEVER hearing anything from it again, but here we are. I am not a Springsteen fan. I hate his voice. I hate his story-telling style of lyric writing. I hate how much he wishes he was Bob Dylan (who I also hate). But mostly, and specific to this album, I HATE that the average American flag waving douche-bag still regards Born In The U.S.A. as a fist-pumping patriotic anthem. Cover Me is probably the closest I've ever come to enjoying a Springsteen song though, so points for that I guess.

Ett par klassiker men framförallt väldigt trött. Fattar ej grejen med The Boss.

I don't really like this guys music Will I listen to again: 0%

It's funny that Born in the US is the famous track of this album because the song immediately following it is so much better. In general, this has both that 80s sounds and country-ish vocals that I really dislike. But Cover Me really had a nice sound. 2.5 rounded down. You put a song like "I'm Goin Down" on an album and you aren't cracking into the 3+ stars.

this was fun, but only a few songs. the rest felt like a slog. not a huge fan but going to drop off here for today because I just suffered through two metal albums

Don't like it

Lots of classics, I just don't really like Bruce's classics.

Solid album

Not for me, born in the USA is annoying 4.5/10

Almost 3 stars. Little too much yelling

Read the lyrics to Born in the USA for the first time- so it’s about the mistreatment of the middle class, and in particular Vietnam Vets upon their return. More progressive than US Fascists seem to think. Two issues: musically it’s extremely obnoxious- just a terrible fucking song. AND it’s viewpoint is parochial- focused on the poor vets- but while they are victims- haw about the millions of Vietnamese lives disrupted and ended in the “kill anything that moves” doctrine that war was waged by. Fuck the USA. Also- this album’s production is 80s in the bad way, and Bruce is always singing anthemically- it’s wearying. He chills out on “I’m on Fire” probably the best track on the record. I didn’t know “Dancing in the Dark” was on this record- obviously the biggest hit (504 million views!). It’s catchy and were it arranged and performed in the 1950s I’d probably love it. As is it’s the most synth and sax laden but of 80s schlock imaginable. Put this goddamn album in the discount bin or burn it. My enjoyment- one star. For its earnestness, I’ll give it one more.

The Arthur Miller of pop. If you empathise with the tragic hero character, I can see how this is awesome. I don't, so I don't. Dancing in the dark doesn't make up for the awful sax either

Eeeh this was kinda rough.

Don’t really get why he’s so popular, I feel like there’s artists nowadays doing this genre better. Also I heard him singing about a ‘little girl’ on 2 different songs and any more than 1 is too much.

Overblown throaty meat and potatoes. Not my boss.

America

"Well time slips away leaves you with nothing, mister, but boring stories of glory days." Bruce sums up how I feel about his album. Everything sounds so musically uninspired. I do appreciate the juxtaposition of how "Born in the USA" is used as a patriotic anthem versus the actual lyrics.

He yells a bit too much for my liking

I'm On Fire is a genuinely brilliant song, and there are a couple other highlights on this album, but a lot of it feels really dated and cheesey. There are some good Springsteen albums, but this isn't one of them.

if i was a white male born in the 60s or 70s i would think this album was good to great. i was born in the 90s as a black man. this album was as mid as potato salad from a local american diner. white people can have him at the cookout.

not for me

not my style of music

This is another phenomenon I have never been able to understand. How he continues to pull off the ‘working class hero’ image following decades of fame and wealth is beyond me. Don’t mind his greatest hits but his voice always sounds strained rather than powerful and his lyrics a bit over sentimental.

Not only is this not my jam in term of style, I couldn't feel LESS like hearing Americana patriotism bullshit given the last 2 weeks of utter political shitshow from the USA. From what I read The Boss himself is anti Trump, so no shade on him there.

Again, a album I didn't love. It was boring overall but had a few hits.

I honestly listened to 2 songs and it just wasn’t my vibe so I wasn’t a huge fan.

Only Dance In The Dark and My Hometown resonated a bit with me. The music is kind of ok, the lyrics are hard to relate to.

Dancing in the dark está bien, jarto plagiadic por parte de war on drugs laerda. Ah y que la mitad de las canciones la batería entre solo con los golpes de caja esos? es su trademark?

First time listening and I wasn’t as impressed as I thought I would be from all the talk about it

This is one of Springsteen's weaker albums. Dated 80s sound, pretty pedestrian lyrics (where are the gritty character sketches?). Even the vaunted title track has some parts where he's just searching for something meaningful to say. And No Surrender? Come on... hackneyed crap. And you know what I think he (Springsteen) knows it. Pretty sad when Dancing in the Dark is the best song. Check that, I think it's Glory Days and Going Down and Hometown that ALMOST save this turd of an album. OK Hometown is a good song. 3 stars, reluctantly! Fuck it....2 stars! Tell me what you really think

I'll continue to think Bruce Springsteen is overrated until I hear music from him that doesn't sound like a backyard garage band full of teenagers. At least the album provides a relevant message. Favorite Song: "Born In The U.S.A."

Yes, the Boss, lots of well-known songs. But then after a few songs it just gets nostalgic and it's enough with US country again.

Definitively Bruce.

All what I dislike in rock on one album

The title track is dreadful content, vocal, and repetition-wise. Cover Me wasn't awful. Darlington County is. Working on the Highway was a pretty good song, reminding me of Lord Huron. I'm On Fire is good. I walked in expecting to hate this and was only half correct. 2 stars for the few decent songs.

Apart from the three singles I already knew, the rest of this album was a mystery. It’s very clangy, grating and Bruce is pretty much screaming his way through the songs. I preferred the slower ballads but even those were fairly boring.

Never liked him

I’m just not a Bruce kinda girl, im sorry :(

Nej tak

I don't wannnaaaaaaaaa listen to thissssss.... I'm only 4 songs in and it's so weird and creepy. Dancing in the Dark is the only good song. Thank god im done tho

I'm sorry, I just don't like this. 2/5

Yeah, it's heartland rock which is fine but not something I gravitate towards. A few good tracks throughout but the sound just gets tiring. Being a fan of The Killers, it's funny realizing now how much of a direct influence this sound shows through on many tracks of theirs that I don't care for much (see Imploding the Mirage).

I like the hits and the typical 80s sound but not something I would listen to again

bored of the USA too bored to run etc.

Boy I just don’t know about Bruce Springsteen. Just don’t see it. The “if you listen to the lyrics, he’s actually CRITICAL Americana!” trick works once, the first time, and it IS cool. But the music is pretty not cool, to me.

Title track still slaps. The rest of the album just felt like butt rock style vocals over 80s electronic keyboard.

I like rock, but not this kind of rock. It is interesting that the album/title track have been unfairly labelled as unashamed patriotism, but that's about it for me.

Mention a rubbish job, lust for a "little girl", a train/bus (each an American synonym for poverty) and jail and you've got yourself a Springsteen track. He often sounds like Vic Reeves singing in the style of a club singer, however he did exceeded my expectations. The album is listenable. I could listen again. I just won't.

There were a few good songs but overall I didn't care for the album.

Ehhhh Springsteen isn't really my thing. I gave it a listen to see if that has changed but I'm still not really into it.

Not for me but with a couple of classic hits

Not my cup of tea

Wow, the second Bruce Springsteen record in 2 days time. I get why this one is on here, because it has the hits and the iconic voice, but did he really deserve to have more than one album on here? The writer must be a nationalist and consider this guy a national treasure. I'll give it a 2 just because these songs were hits, but I am so sick and tired of them.

Overplayed is an understatement

Historically, this is the Reagan years, communism and the economic rise of Japan. Working class hero with a guitar from Jersey is all I hear. Beyond the title track being a wolf in sheep's clothing, I never really understood what the big deal was about this album or Springsteen in general. Does this album still have a place in 2024?

Another month, another Springsteen album. Surely they must be running out soon. Though not his worst, it's still pretty terrible. Recognised two of the songs and both already annoyed me. I'm on Fire saves it from yet another 1* Brucey award. 1.5*. Congrats Bruce

I didn't hate it, but I wasn't really into it. It's just the ultimate in mid-afternoon background noise really.

After having 4 (of the 5) Springsteen albums on the 1001 list, I was hoping this one may pique my interest, but nope, I still don't care much for Bruce Springsteen.

Too upbeat, Dancing in the dark is the only song I kinda like, and others have better covers of it.

From what I understand, this is by far his best album. Classic Americana, by your drunk Uncle doing karaoke

Didn’t really like it. Favorite song: Born in the USA Rating: 3/10

Doesn’t really have a lot of interest to me. I like glory days and my hometown is alright but the rest puts me to sleep or is way overplayed.

Favourite track: Downbound Train.

I know this is a classic but it does nothing for me

Taustamusiikkia

Opens with that awful 80s synth and reverb drums. Then the awful voice. Dude cannot sing. Album finished strong but damn I don't like the sound of this album. I'm on Fire great tune though

Pretty good but Glory Days ruins it

I've always thought Springsteen sounded like a mewling drunk. This album wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, but he still sounds terrible....

Some good songs but mostly pretty boring

I was surprised how much I did not enjoy most of this album

Boring, repetitive, annoying.

Bruce just doesn’t do it for me. Probably a generational thing.

I appreciate the bait and switch nature of the title track. I love how modern republicans think it’s some sort of anthem, rather than the indictment it is. I also think Glory Days is still a banger. Outside of that, this album, sonically, is just so very 80s that I can’t imagine listening to it start to finish again. I really expected to give this a solid 3 but it’s a 2.5 at best.

3 good songs, rest are awful

Way overrated

Finally someone who’s not afraid to be an American!! 😤

Pls stop with the gravelly voiced old white guys Thank you

For some reason I always get Bruce Springsteen and Bruce Willis mixed up. Is it because they look alike? (Probably not) or because Springsteen’s music is like the Die Hard films? (More likely) or because they share same name and I’m getting on a bit now so unable to distinguish? (Very likely) Anyhow I always think of the other when watching or listening to either chap and this spoils both things for me. This is because I end up feeling that both the films and music are over the top American jingoism. Don’t get me wrong I think that in the main this is a good quality and wish the we in the UK displayed more of it but not sure I want it in my music. Having said that UK musical history is full of jingoism - Rule Britannia, Land Of Hope And Glory spring to mind but that stuff was eons ago. When rating this album I cannot help but be distracted by my rambling thoughts I have tried to express above. Whilst it is full of good rock tracks many of them now established standards, it is not the type of rock music which I yearn for when in a rock music mood. Cannot doubt its significance but an album low down in my appreciation. I don’t own the album but would buy it if seen cheap. To date I only have a Springsteen greatest hits album which is probably all I ill ever need. 2.5/5 22/6/24

“Born In The USA” is a great track but I didn’t really need to listen to more of the same.

A Classic, but a little bit boring

✅ strong one check, almost two but realistically don't see myself coming back to this one. some really poignant moments to be sure, very "dark side of the 'american dream'

An ok album
