Really good album. I'm in the fence about buying it. The bass was hitting hard, as do the lyrics.
The instrumentation is awesome! The vocals mesh really well
Something notable with some hiphop albums is that, the ones that i like the most trascend the lyrical part. This is one of them. i don't usually care about the lyrics, but with this one, i can feel invested because the beats and the musical part is superb.

Not my kind of music, but it is obviously done well. Good production.
Phenomenal from start to finish.
This is a fun album that really does well to draw on 90s influences. Favorite track: A Day at the Races
Sent me on a Jurassic 5 deep dive, I quite liked it.
Thin line
I had no idea this was gonna be this good wow. 2000s hiphop can be actually good? Whaat? INSAANE instrumentals. Most of the first half made me dance and stuff it was so vibey. Its only a 4 star because the second half had some weaker songs. And I'm not talking about the last song that's a vibe. Many eeasy 5 star songs but altogether a good 4. The best album in weeks
I knew nothing about Jurassic 5 going in and was quite impressed. The lyrics are smart, positive, and concerned with truth. The use of sampling and downtempo beats is really interesting. You can tell these guys owe a lot to new school 80s/90s hip hop and pay homage throughout with their beats and flow style. The members are very talented and have their own styles, yet sounds really great as a collective. I love alt/progressive rap and this album really hit the spot.
Brought me back to the early 00's.
Some really cool ideas here, but for my first listen I felt like they got pretty tired and couldn't justify the run time. I'll be coming back to this to pick my favourites out.
Poetry and rhythm.
Didn’t finish, but really appreciated what I heard. Has a very raw, real feel, underground in a way? Fugee-esque?Especially appreciated tracks “A Day at the Races” and “Thin Line”. 4/5, would totally recommend.
pretty good, nice lyrics. not a fan of hip hop but this has some bangers.
jazzy, funky and the lyrics slap
Ok
Classic, good vibes hip-hop. Great varieties of flows and awesome bass lines!
Old school hip hop, not too in your face. Flows well and is an easy listen. Enjoyed.
Great hip hop album
Top 3: Break, A Day at the Races, High Fidelity Mostly a banger, couple songs are mid
Always loved the way the different vocalists blend their lyrics together
This albums actually like really good, it harnesses the styling of grandmaster flash, this album makes Eminem look like skittles.
Favourite songs: What's Golden, Break, Freedom, A Day At The Races, Remember His Name, High Fidelity, Sum of Us Least favourite songs: Hey, React, This Is (fucking skits) 4/5
This is the kind of hip-hop I love. Really love this, but it goes on for a bit too long. 4/5
I would say their debut (J5 LP from 1998) is essential listening. Power in Numbers is also great hip hop record. On Power in Numbers they’ve expanded on their signature sound of harmonising rap over break beats. With top notch turntableism, a surpring amount of great flute samples and archaic record industry samples. Power in Numbers has a fuller more radio friendly sound than their previous releases. But it has also lost a little bit of freshness of the debut. Still a lot of great tracks here.
Very cool, reminds me of MF Doom a bit and I love that.
Surprisingly very very good album!
Great album. Really enjoyed this one. I had never really listened to j5 previously but I loved when they rotate the lead in the middle of a song. Each voice has its own personality that comes through on every verse. I felt like the whole album was consistent throughout, I don't even think I could pick a track to single out because it all sounded good to me. High 4/5 easy
This is sick.
Good rap!
Dig it!
Väldugt trevligt, saknade bara Mos def. Nice bassljud på de flesta beaten och en av dem som rappa hade sjukt nice röst och flow.
Really surprised by this album. Every song flows nicely into each other, the voice clips are a really nice touch and the beats on this project are absolutely amazing. Rapping is old school so its kinda nostalgic, but not really a absolute fan of it. For a 2002 project this album is amazing 8.5/10
I confused them with Maroon 5 who they most definitely are not. i like this a lot and will look out for more of their stuff
Soul music that we can all relate to. Candy for your ears.
This is a cool record. I pretty much immediately gave it a second listen. It's going to require further listening.
This that old school, hip hop, boom bap, nice raps album. Break, React, and What’s Golden are some of my favorite tracks.
I really loved this. Not much of a hiphop guy, but it’s definitely something I enjoy occasionally. In this case it was the clarity and the beats. Just a vibe that made my day better and my city walk more enjoyable.
Mowed my muuufuggin yard to this yesterday pretty damn good mowin music. I want to give a 3.5 but I’m going to round up because I fucking love What’s Golden
This was a decent listen, even to someone who isn't generally a rap fan. The sampling is great, the flow is solid. I admittedly didn't focus much on the lyrical content much on this first listen, so I hope I'm not out of pocket in saying that they seem like a "fun" group, but yeah, this was fun.
4.5
Great beats.
This album was new to me. Majority of the album has very cool jazz backing. Great album. I could see this becoming part of my already eclectic collection
Good beat/lyrics; clear vocals; not usually a hip-hop fan, but these guys are good; enjoyed the instrumentals (Day at the races has a really cool bass line)
7 good hip hop with great beats
Love Jurassic 5 but I somehow always forget about them. This is a great album from top to bottom. It's old school hip hop, but uniquely their style. IT seems more sophisticated in a lot of ways - real instruments, thoughtful arrangements. Lots of talent in this group.
I liked this
Cool feature by Nelly furtado, political album for sure
Good this and I've not listened to it much
There's a lyrics in one of the first songs on here that says something along of line of how they just want to bring you the old school hip-hop sound. And that's exactly what they do over the whole album, and do it very well. If you're not a fan of those 90s beats and lyrics then I doubt this will change you mind, but for someone like me who loves that sound, I had a great time listening. The production is great, even drum kicks hits you right in the chest. The songs where they up the tempo a little lets them show off their more technical skills, but mostly this is an album to sit back and relax too. No complaints really.
4#
The first time I hear of Jurassic 5 was some time in the early aughts; I think they were coming to town as part of a tour with a few other artists that I wanted to see (maybe Lollapooza 2003). I thought about checking them out at the time, because they sounded cool, but I never listened to them until today. This album was great, and I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. The rapping was great, the beats and other musical elements were fantastic, and the lyrics were savvy and political. Chali 2na was easily my favorite rapper of the group; his vocals are so rich and unique, and I thought he had a great flow as well. The run of "Remember His Name," "What's Golden," and "Thin Line" is absolute perfection. "Thin Line" is the best track on the album though; those lyrics about attraction between friends are absolutely brilliant.
Smooth flows that flow smoothly between tracks. A tribute to what came before and an optimistic screed on what came next.
A great discovery!
Conscious, Jazz Rap, Boom Bap... Wow! I didn't knew Jurassic 5 was all of that, why nobody told me? Very glad I just discovered this album.
After initial trepidation about yet another unknown hip hop album I really warmed to this. Light tunes, good sound and nicely put together. A real revelation.
Another good one. Unfamiliar with the artists.
Very simple samples that go fucken hard, lyrics have deep meanings behind them. Love this kind of hip hop with old school sampling.
Not so new old school rap
Best Song: What's Golden. That lower register, group male vocal chorus is something that you just do see in rap anymore, and yet it doesn't feel at all aged here. Worst Song: I Am Somebody. The chorus feels like it comes from a song that was intentionally written to hype up crowds during breaks of a sporting event, complete with graphics on the jumbotron that tell attendees to "Make Some Noize". Overall: Goddamnit it slaps. Funky, bouncy, retro without feeling aged. The beats are great. The rhymes are great. Will be returning to this one in earnest.
Only knew their debut, but this album is very similar in quality. I like the relaxed sound, the beats, flow etc. Some highlights: What's Golden, of course, and One of Them. 4 stars (8/10)
Loved it. Sounds dated in the best way possible. Not my typical genre. Will definitely be included in future playlists.
I wasn't expecting much going in, but I was impressed. Good rapping, good beats, not as explicit lyrically as I was assuming it would be. I might listen to this again some time.
Gute Beats
Solid
"Power In Numbers" heralds from a distant, divergent timeline in hip-hop. Imagine if, rather than the growth of hardcore or gangsta rap through the 1990s, the sunsoaked alternative stylings of Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul or Gang Starr retained their hold into 2003. Jurassic 5 specialise in funk and soul samples, positivity, clean vocals and crisp, clear beats. They're easygoing, yes- but much of "Power In Numbers" remains thought-provoking and introspective. It took a few tracks, but I was sold on the album the moment the group's voices entered in unison over the propulsive, bass-heavy drums of "Break". Passages of greatness are sprinkled all over the rest of the album. "What's Golden" is an addictive smash hit: beefy bassline and organ moving in unison, its hook working its way through like a bouncing demolition ball with a smiley face sprayed on it. Similarly, "High Fidelity" is a triumph and "Day at the Races" had me strutting along, feeling like the coolest white kid in the world for three joyous minutes. There are some welcome surprises, too: "If You Only Knew" might be the most prominent use of flute I've heard in hip-hop and it works brilliantly. "Thin Line" is a welcome shift to a mellow place, as Nelly Furtado features over a luscious sample of Minnie Riperton's "Les Fleurs". The lyrical flows are top-notch throughout, and the smooth vocal timbres are very easy on the ear. But "Power In Numbers"' main fault is that it just becomes slightly too repetitive for me: its production, the instrumentation, the cadence of each verse. Things start to sag in the final stretch of the record, and as different as "Acetate Prophets" is with its drum loops cascading into infinity, I found it a bit underwhelming as a closer. Still, this is a solid record and I'm going to mark up to put it above the majority of hip-hop I've had so far on the list.
Great alternative hip hop that I would gladly listen to again. It got creative beats and good rapping. Almost a 5/5.
power in numbers was a delightful surprise! jurassic 5 had real purpose when creating this album. i was blown away by some of these lyrics and themes. jurassic 5 covered political corruption and personal empowerment, called out phony black people, reminisced about the old days of rap music. the second song on the album is titled "freedom" and these lyrics cover the song's point better than i could: "yo, my forefathers hung in trees to be free (rest in peace)/got rid of slavery but still kept the penitentiary." the majority of this album is rap and hip hop, but jurassic 5 hop around to other black originated genres, too. "if you only knew" is jazz inspired and so smooth--and it specifically and blatantly mentions soul music! there's some funk interspersed as well. "remember his name" is a thematically dark song about death, and i can't help but be reminded of the last ten years of social unrest, though this album was released in 2002. "if you only knew" has jurassic 5 speaking to and trying to connect with the black community, despite differences of protest methods: "i'm trying hard to relate in a place filled with so much hate." i'd be remiss to not mention the call and response (usually linked with black cultures) within "i am somebody". the choice to use call and response to empower the listener is so powerful. i'll include a disclaimer that i'm white, but even i can appreciate the significance of this album. this is definitely an album written for the black community.
PREFS : Freedom, Break, A Day at the Races, Remember His Name, What's Golden, Thin Line, Sum of Us, One of Them, I Am Somebody, Acetate Prophets MOINS PREF : After School Special
Better than I expected
Me encantó.
Classic hip-hop that I had not realized I missed listening to
Dope!
I’m not normally into hip-hop but this was pretty great. I loved a lot of the tracks but also though the album was a bit bloated with a few weaker tracks.
YAAAAASSSS YA FUCKIN’ BEAUTY! Love me some J5 guys! Awesome stuff! Loved it!
Very fun album
I actually really enjoyed this album. It was refreshing to hear rap/hip hop that sounded like it came from the late 80s/early 90s, but had better lyrical content
4. I'm not at all into rap/hiphop but I actually enjoyed this?
Hyvää posse hipedi hoppia
I liked this one a lot! The production is so cool, I loved the beat on what’s golden. I’ll def listen to this again
Enjoyable.
Classic conscious hip hop worth trapping in amber.
Interested in this particular style of flow that hasn't has much presence in my hip hop listening to date. I liked it.
Ah man, this is like a nostalgia punch in the gut. I remember buying this CD at Ameba Records when I working in LA for a couple months around 2002 or 2003. Driving around in sunny LA jamming to J5. Love the beats, the vitality, the positivity. Great hip hop record
Nice funky funny groove driven hip hop
Solid followup to a classic! Really enjoying the production and lyrics on this, they all took a step forward on this album
Ret nice start 00'er hiphop, virkelig chill, grineren lyrics
The sound is excellent; didn't pay much attention to the lyrics.
I am a huge fan of Hip-Hop and I am surprised that I haven't listened to much Jurassic 5. I have heard of this group before, but am not familiar with any of their big hits. That will change though as I will definitely be checking out their other work. Consider me a new fan of theirs.
volim hip hop koji ima elemente alternativne glazbe, odnosno koji malo skrene od očite formule
Þetta er góð plata, mikið grúv, mikið fönk og rappið er ekki óþolandi.
Great record. It has got everything
Solid album. Not enough hip hop on this list in general, and this is a welcome addition. That said, its not a five star album. Its solid at four stars but not holy-shit-you-must-hear-this five stars level. 4/5
I listened to the shit out of this in high school and it's still doing it for me. I feel like they don't get enough credit.
It was good. Shows its age a bit but otherwise its really good.
Finally some good fucking food. The first track (excluding the skit first song) gives big A Tribe Called Quest vibes. Really liking the Jazzy production and the way they swap flows between the member's mid-verse. Ok, this is REALLY like A Tribe Called Quest and Pharside. It's interesting that it doesn't have any of the members but sounds so similar. Break is a standout song that has great production and good flow. Thin line is great because it has Nelly Furtado. Basically, the whole album was full of good shit barring like 2 songs. The last song was interesting as it was just an instrumental. So far this is the best album that we have listened to. I actually added a good amount of the song to my rotation Overall really good. It may be a little derivative, but that isn't inherently a bad thing. I vibed with a lot of the production on the songs and all the group members flowed together really well. I don't want to say it was a 5/5 but it was overall really good in my opinion. A strong 4/5 (would be 4.5 if I could give half stars)
Great beats and really catchy. Digging it.
Thumbs up!
Had no idea. What a cool sound.
A transition between 80s and 90s hip-hop, as well as just a fucking well produced and preformed album. Favorite Track: What’s Golden Rating: 7.5/10
Fun record. A little too long for me but there are definitely some strong moments that make it enjoyable. My standout songs were "A Day at the Races", "Thin Line", and the closer "Acetate Prophets". Definitely a strong early 90s sound to this. Maybe not the most original but still a solid project. Personal Enjoyment - 7.5 Songwriting - 7.5 Lyrics - 7 Originality - 6.5 Production Value - 10 Artwork - 9 Overall - 7.6
This was fun and good. Excellent rapping
These guys are very good rappers. The production was solid as well and only 6 or so of the 17 tracks were explicit which in rap it’s pretty unique. I’m not sure how often I’d really listen to this again but it was well crafted.
Sometime early this century, Jurassic 5 toured Australia. I knew very little about hip-hop at the time, but both my kids had been infected by it. Anyway, one afternoon, I remember them racing downstairs & out the door. Had no idea why, but half an hour later, when they returned, discovered that a radio station had announced that Jurassic5 were at the BP Station on Erskineville Road, & the kids were proudly waving their autographs at me. They’ve always been loved by the dynamic duo & I can see why after listening to this. And I’d say J5 definitely influenced the kids’ brand of hip-hop. This was an easy listen. I loved the flute in If You Only Knew. And some of the samples are so tasty - don’t know where the Love in Them There Hills steal comes from ( not the Pointer Sisters version) but it’s so effective in I Am Somebody. And the sample from Ray Manzarek’s Golden Scarab is a real winner in the final track, Acetate Prophets. A band at the top of their game.
Great beats, samples and grooves. Great bars that at time feel monotonous some tracks have cadences that are not my favorite. But this thing is raw and hard as fuck. 4/5
Yesss, I forgot how much I liked Jurassic 5!
Good for a selection on a mix. Similar to A Tribe Called Quest.
Thoroughly enjoyed the start and the added extras but thought the end lost a little fun
Nice. Great. Smashing. Lovely. Tasty. Nice.
Excellent 4+/5
I love this album. I listened to them a lot when I was in college, and this toko me back. :-)
Classic rap album, brilliant.
The rap albums in this exercise are so damn good. I loved this album. Favorite track: A Day at the Races
Felt like 90s skater style music and a throwback album even though I'd never heard it before. Pretty good.
Nice. "A Day at the Races" and "What's Golden" kick ass, and the rest of the songs are strong as well.
This was a great album. J5 has excellent flow while rapping, rhymes are great. The beats are unique and interesting. The jazz, and reggae influences in the background is great as well.
Surprisingly fun album. Really dig the latter half. Will be revisiting this one again for sure.
Instead of pushing boundaries, Power in Numbers establishes itself as a perfect center: old school and new, West Coast and East, danceable beats and conscious lyrics. The production is especially rich from open to close, never boring but never thudding out-of-place. Out of the gate, it seems strange that a hip-hop record like this could come out in '02, but Jurassic 5 makes it make sense. Reads crowd-pleaser in all the right ways.
I rarely actually enjoy a hip-hop album as it isn't a genre I gravitate to, but I really enjoyed this listen! There was great variety and I think that's what kept me more engaged than other hip-hop albums I've listened to
This was a good hip-hop album. Good social commentary mixed with exciting and fun samples/beats
Really cool feel to this! Poignant lyrics that matched the rhythm perfectly, and I didn’t feel like I was being screamed at. Different than what I’d normally listen to but I enjoyed it!
This is well outside my usual thing but it's absolutely brilliant
very 2000s
Great but fuck the homophobic bullshit track One of Them.
4.0
Holding on to What’s Golden
Смешание рэпа и джазас прикольной мелодией
Classic J5 album that I had previously listened to. Going through a full run definitely gives me those early 2000 hip-hop vibes again. Charlie Tuna is representing once again with his unique flow. Solid beats throughout.
Old school meets new school. The link between Public Enemy and Kanye. Pristine beats. Need deeper listening to catch all the lyrics, but surgical rhyming and fantastic flows. Just a really good rap album. Grooves for days.
Listening in 2022 with no context, it's hard to know if this is an album that defined the genre or merely an exemplar of a classic hip-hop era, but it's a solid and refreshing record with a funky groove and exciting flows.
Jazzy and groovy. I liked this album a lot
This was an awesome album. Immediately felt iconic and I'm shocked I haven't listened to them before. But, technically I have, because on the first track one voice stood out to me. I knew I had heard it from one of my fav albums Reanimation from Linkin Park and sure enough, on Forgotten, Chali 2na is featured with his very deep voice and it's the same guy. One piece of this rap squad that feels like a new age Tribe Called Quest. I hope we get more albums like this. Saved If You Only Knew, What's Golden, and Sum of Us.
The most versatile rap album i’ve ever heard. Most listeners should be able to find at least one song they can enjoy. I liked them all. 4/5
I admit I was skeptical but less than halfway through and I'm already intensely impressed. These guys have flow like butter and I feel such a sickcunt listening to this. I'm certain I'll be back for more.
It's a strange choice, to have J5s third, and third best of their first three albums on here. Not complaining, hearing Charli 2na's voice on anything is going to bring me joy, but with a few (admittedly brilliant) exceptions, while the rhymes are great, the beats are less vibrant and exciting than on previous albums. It's still brilliant. It's just like getting Van Gogh's self portrait when you were hoping for Starry Night and Sunflowers.
Great record. Rhymes, beats, themes, samples - all done exceedingly well.
Great beats and the MCs put on a rhyme clinic throughout. The mix of tempos, sounds, and flows keep the album moving and interesting for the whole hour.
A new one for me but this was a good listen Stand out tracks - Freedom What's golden Thin line
8/10. I liked this, had a sorta cool little sound
Started out strong but got kinda boring partway through. Beats and lyrics were generally solid. 7/10
Jurassic five kicks so hard. Great samples, tasteful bass, mostly chill lyrics, love the rappers cadence. One of my buddies raps like the one with the deep voice. Even the single still has personality and flair. Smart rappers with appeal for any group. Good storytellers to boot.
Git
Despite straddling the line between authenticity and accessibility, Jurassic 5 maintain the quality control that made them household names with Power in Numbers, perhaps the most apt description of their overall appearance and talents. Some of their guests (Big Daddy Kane, Kool Keith and Nelly Furtado) do not sound out of place amongst them and are often elevated due to the 5's rhyming prowess and brilliance and ability to conjure up one earworm after another. Pretty stellar stuff. Favorites: Freedom, If You Only Knew, Break, React, A Day at the Races, What's Golden, Thin Line, After School Special, Sum of Us, One of Them, Hey, I Am Somebody.
I absolutely loved this. There was a bit of filler in the second half otherwise I probably would have given this a 5, but on the whole this was great! Will definitely be checking out more of their stuff
- Beats are so crisp - seems like real transition between old school and 2000s rap - not really listening to lyrics
This is a pretty damn good hip hop album. I love Jurassic 5's collaborations with Dave Matthews as well.
4 When I first saw the length I was really concerned. I find rap challenging to begin with and a long one is intimidating to be sure. I’d say for the first few songs my fears were realized, but when I got to “What’s Golden” I felt like the album really found it’s footing. Pointed, clever, catchy. This felt like Sugarhill Gang X NWA (even though I think there’s an NWA diss track on here). I especially liked the bit about the messed up LP. All in all it’s definitely a back half album that I think I’ll be going back to often. Favorites: Everything after “After School Special”
4 I kept thinking this group sounded so familiar until I got to A Day at the Races... and of course it was in a Tony Hawk game. Neversoft was always on the ball when it came to picking out music, and this is no exception - both the track itself and the album is fantastic. From the beats, to the vocals, to the lyrics, the members of Jurassic 5 were firing on all cylinders here, and there's not a bad or uninteresting moment to be had. I feel like I can hear some A Tribe Called Quest influence in the vocal dynamics, social messages, and basslines, though the group still forges a clear identity of their own with unique beats and quirky transitions - likely largely a product of producer/member Cut Chemist. Another name I know from the Tony Hawk games, the dude is an absolutely insane DJ, and this album definitely makes me wants to check out more his production work and J5's discog. Favorite songs: A Day at the Races, If You Only Knew, Sum of Us
Great beats, excellent flow on a lot of tracks, and distinct voices that work together as well as separately. Not all the lyrics speak to me directly, but I'm not the intended audience either. Solid entry. I'll return to it.
very good album. Recognized their voices from ssx on tour and was pleasantly surprised by both them and the album.
franchement très sympathique
One of my favorites
Lovely stuff
Surprisingly good, but I should have expected that from an early 2000s rap album, they are always surprisingly good. Funky and every song flowed into the next so well. Really enjoyed my time, even if it was a little long.
7/10 quite wow
Lot of love for 90's rap, and Jurassic 5. 4.5/5
Some of the best early-00s rap I've heard tbh. Lush beats, conscious and fun lyrics... Good stuff, will be listening again.
Solid hip hop, not a bad track on the album really. Hard to say more, other than that it’s enjoyable.
bonne surprise finalement
Very good album. Some great tracks but every one was at least good.
Really good production, good interesting flows, and serviceable lyricsm. Overall a really cool project.
Good album.
Very solid album. Fun to listen. Great tunes.
Not as good as some of there other albums but unique and funky in its own right.
i dig it!
Yeah good
Great album. I was already familiar with "What's Golden" and it's been a favorite of mine. "Freedom" was another great track. Jurassic 5 is always a joy to listen to and this album was no exception.
Exceptionally smooth, almost singing rap. Interesting influences and use of different instruments!
Nice
I enjoyed this and this style of low ego hiphop. Slightly weird as I'm more familiar with Charli 2na and Akil from listing to early DJ Format albums. I could do without the heavy cussing on track 14: One of Them. Felt quite out of step with the rest of the album.
Very enjoyable smooth hiphop, good work motivation music
not a single song I don’t like. very groovy, chill and vibey. good album to lose your mind to. Makes me want to walk down the largest traffic street of a major city at 11pm on a Friday.
Yeah pretty banging
Pretty Solid. Good Tracks: A Day @ the Races What's Golden One of Them Acetate Prophets
Grooooovy. The beats are strong
An album I'm already somewhat familiar with. 1) This Is: Intro track introducing freedom and feeding from the last album. 2) Freedom: Nice opening track, but nothing special. 3) If You Only Knew: Nice rhythm and backing vocals. 4) Break: Beats here are nice alongside intro jingle, good flow between vocals and instruments. 5) React: Short track, nothing to note. 6) A Day at the Races: Classic. 7) Remember His Name: Really nice beat, chaotic flow with samples and lyrics. 8) What's Golden: Perfect beat and flow, can tell why its the biggest song on the album. 9) Thin Line: Nice female vocals, smooth chorus 10) After School Special: Bland compared to the rest of the album 11) High Fidelity: Ok 12) Sum of Us: Brings my attention back, again really nice beat and accompanying vocals. 13) DDT: Another short track connecting the two. 14) One of Them: Not much of a fan, feels too repetitive. 15) Hey: Too samey for me. 16) I am Somebody: The beat is back! I AM SOMEBODY! 17) Acetate Prophets: Interesting and different from the album so far but not really my thing. Overall this album has a few duds but it's heights save the album and it gives you that feeling that only classic hip-hop can.
My first time to listen J5, it's a bit surprise and I think I like their style.
Rap, hip-hop, a good beat. I dig it.
Some really good rap! They all have crazy good flow! 4
Nice throwback. Smooth flow and smart lyrics. Not my usual thing but I'm glad I heard it.
Einzigartige old school beats und komplexe Reime. Sozialkritik, Alltagsgeschichten und Humor
A slightly more uptempo Morcheeba -- what an uncool comparison -- but I think I might come back to this one later and investigate further.
Overraskende bra. Oldskool og gøy.
Ikke mye hip-hop og rapsom høres her i gården bortsett fra klassikere som https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BHnMo-6yMXY. Men denne var fin.
I was very pleasantly surprised by this album. It was very listenable, and very even-keeled for this genre of music. "I Am Somebody", and "What's Golden" were the standouts. I will listen to "What's Golden" often.
Not as good as Quality Control, but more of the same. Good beats, good rhymes, nice Kool Keith spot. No idea why I didn't buy this album in 2002 so I'm glad I got to go back to it today.
It's a Jurassic 5 record. Day at the races, What's Golden, I Am Somebody are sublime. The rest is merely great.
This was an album I didn’t appreciate if listening it to with other things going on. Really cool when it had my undivided attention. True hip hop - meaningful lyrics that make you think and slick beats. Really enjoyed the variety of sounds from track to track. One knock is that these guys aren’t the best vocalists. When they harmonize it sounds a bit cheesy. Still, great album. Highlights were Freedom, If You Only Knew, A Day at the Races, Remember His Name (cool intro using everyday sounds and loved the lyrics), High Fidelity, One of Them (much angrier lyrics than the rest but with a point to make).
Good grooves and relatively clean lyrics (but not always). The album grew on me with each listen. In fact, I definitely want to keep listening, so that alone kicks it above a 3. I'm finding I enjoy rap a lot more when it's not full of misogyny and violence (and in fact, they call out the latter in "Not that Kind"). Overall, it's a fun ride with a good mix of different rap styles. It's not a 5 for me, but definitely a solid 4. Favorite tracks: Freedom, If You Only Knew, Break, What's Golden (this one caught my attention every time I listened), Sum of Us.
An underground hip-hop band with an empty Wikipedia page and "generally positive" reviews. I wasn't expecting much, but damn am I amazed. Loving the jazzy, cool, and lofi beats and samples with various rappers reminiscent of a calmer group of Q-Tips. Some samples andturntables sound late 80s. They even got Nelly Furtado god damn! Could be cut by a couple songs near the end but otherwise a blast I'll re-explore! Favorites: Freedom, If You Only Knew, What's Golden, Thin Line, High Fidelity, Hey
This is a good Hip Hop album, was straight vibin' through it might revisit it one day. 4/5 is good.
Imacculate flow on all tracks together with mostly strong lyrics make a strong 4/5. Top tracks: Thin line Remember his name
I enjoyed how many styles there were on this.
4/5. Min smak, tappa min uppmärksamhet under sista låtarna.
This was a really fun album. It was also an album so aggressively 2000s that I was 0% surprised when I learned the release date was 2002. This is an age of hip hop and R&B that I miss a lot. Not just because it was from a more carefree time in my own life, but because things back then just had a different rhythm. This is a wonderful "dance around the kitchen" album, in a very different way than the tango albums from before. Fave track: Thin Line. What can I say? I enjoy Nelly Furtado's weird squeaky voice. Production slams too.
I listened to this whilst working and I feel I need to listen again to appreciate it fully. BUT I what I did get was it was a whole load of fun, I loved the spoken samples and the each song was distinctive. Will definite listen again
Favorite track: Thin Line. Reminded me of STS 1101 space capsules reading (Chapter 1: Spaceship Earth in Neil M. Maher's Apollo in the Age of Aquarius) discussion on gap between scientific advancements and social injustice (eg. urban development.) Sometimes thought that beginnings of tracks were Youtube ads. Listened to this while doing flowers paint-by-numbers from ProYos secret santa.
I thought this one was a lot of fun. There are very haunting melodies flying around. I didn't really listen to the lyrics but perhaps some day...
Wow! I find hip-hop to be frequently boring and the lyrical content to come from two schools: boastful excess or whiny promises of violence. I'm lying here with a nasty dose of covid, yet this has me bopping. The vocalists (MCs? Talkers?) are great, taking over, harmonising, using their differences to emphasise their lyrics. I particularly like the deep voice. He's so musical. It is too long and they fell into that familiar genre failure, using that n-word.
4.5/5
less jazzy version of tribe freedom is the s
Loved this, great bit of jazz/soul influenced hip-hop...
Really good! I enjoyed this a lot.
Sounds interesting, hip-hop intertwined with jazz-funk, I've never heard anything like that
one of the better classic rap albums whats golden is a banger and the rest has a nice flow
Not sure what to say about this one, I enjoyed it. Not enough dinosaur references though, considering their name..
What a great bop. Very danceable. Fave: If You Only Knew, just for the mention of the Gold Coast Big Day Out.
Great album, in some alternate universe they are bigger than anyone in the game. Wonderful variety of samples and guests. Thin line, Hey, and Freedom are my favourite songs, along with Kool Keith's DDT freestyle 4 🌟
This was the good hip hop
Some nice mature sounding rap/hip hop. These fellas don't sound like kids, but grown ass adults. Enjoyably of a Thursday morning.
I Really liked "Sum of Us"
Clear muscular hip-hop. Shout-out to Kevin Loughery’s footwear is a personal highlight.
I've forgotten how good F5 is. This album is raw, the beats are simple and the lyrics are great. 4/5.
I had never heard this album before. And really enjoyed it much more than I thought I would. Feels really timeless and solid over all. Would recommend, would listen to again.
I like it! I don't have many reference points for hip hop, so I don't really know how to put it in any context, but I'd definitely put it on again.
I really like this album. Great beats and catchy moments. I don't usually love hip-hop because it can be super violent and misogynistic. But at least this isn't obviously violent. I didn't listen to the lyrics in a detailed way. I was tempted to give it 4, as 3 doesn't seem high enough. But will I really listen to it again...maybe more than other 4's I've rated on this list. Not sure what I will rate yet.
This is cool music. I didn’t really pay much attention to them back in the day. Reminds of of De La Soul.
Basically, it's a bit of a classic in it's genre.
I enjoyed this quite a bit. Great backing tracks, fun rhymes.
I very much liked this one. I had three listens today and it was enjoyable every time!
Loved this. Lots of variety, rewards repeated listening. Great!
-The synced up chorus in "If You Only Knew" and "Break" were both catchy -Whoever's got the deep voice is great. Especially the rhyme scheme in "A Day Races." Although pretty much everyone had great rhyme schemes in that one -In "A Day At The Races" one bar is "You're out of your league like Jordan in baseball" and that's a solid bar right there. also the bass line is great -Gnarly rhymes in "High Fidelity" -In "Sum Of Us" he says 'Seeing more demons than Gene Simmons" -"A Day At The Races," "After School Special," High Fidelity," and "Sum of Us" are all really strong tracks with great rhyme schemes and flows -The best rap/hip hop album I've had so far
Number 4
This is my jam!
Not as strong as Quality Control, but still too notch

I have never heard this artist/band before. So far I like it - Freedom is a good track. Very late 90s hip hop vibes. I like the difference in voices - they contrast each other. Nevermind I HAVE heard this band before. What's Golden!!
Fun, chilled hip hop.
Tasteful samples and great flow/chemistry from the whole Jurassic 5 crew. I'll definitely be coming back to Power in Numbers, as it signals the transition between 90s and early 2000s hip-hop. Fav tracks: Thin Line, What's Golden, A Day at the Races
A lowkey, note-perfect hip hop record. Great samples, grooves, flow, and chemistry between the members. This album was a joy to listen to, front-to-back. J5 may not have been the most innovative group of their era, but their vibe is infectious and undeniable. It's never a bad time to put on this album! Rating 3.5/5 Fave tracks: A Day at the Races, Hey, If Only You Knew, What's Golden, React
EVen it is not melodic at all, I like it very much. The flow was very rhythmic and I enjoyed very much.
4.0 - I could be wrong but to me these guys seem underrated. I liked this record. The flows were on point, the rhymes were interesting, and overall it was a pleasant, uplifting listen. Some cool beats, too, especially the last track "Acetate Prophets."
Yeah great 90s early 2000s rap. Lyrically great, amazing voice and some real gems
8th February 2022 Listened throughout the day while doing bits and pieces, gym etc. drove home in the evening to look at houses in Painswick. Love this. Funky, early 90s hip hop sound. 4.5 if I could.
Really cool hip hop album. Favorites were Freedom, What’s Golden, and High Fidelity.
2/8/22 Really appreciate the entire album as an artistic statement all together. I like how everything flows into one another. Album combines strong themes with cool beats and a fun energy that’s enjoyable to listen to. Very strong 90s hip hop influence which makes sense since it came out in 2002. Overall really enjoyed. Favorites: High Fidelity, This is/Freedom, DDT
extremely 2002, but pretty solid.
Good discovery. Right doses os rhythm melody and content
Great opening half and then I felt like it just petered out. Not the first album I think I'd have given it 5⭐ if it was half as long...
Great beats
Verrrry good. MF DOOM-esque at points
This is a feel good collection of tunes
Great beats, I liked this.
Fantastic album with great flow and groove.
Rap is not usually my thing, but this is very creative stuff. I love the samples and melodies.
3.5/5. This is pretty good. I had no problem listening to it, however, most of the songs seem to repeat themselves. I think I would have enjoyed this more if it were a little shorter. That being said, by no means did I not like this. This album is more enjoyable than others on this list.
This was cool. Hadn’t heard it before, definitely going in regular rotation now
A stellar album with no skips. It makes me overwhelmed to think how much amazing music I have yet to hear considering I missed this.
A party I'm not supposed to be at, but it sounds GREAT.
I enjoyed this even though it's really not in my wheelhouse. It was a cool diversion from my usual fare.
Enjoyed I lot more than I thought I would
I remember when I first auditioned for Jurassic 5. They asked me if I could perform a backflip through a ring of fire, whilst sucking everyone off. I did it. They then chemically castrated me in front of a live studio audience.
Funky, old school stylee hip-hop vibes.
Fun. Jaunty. I'd listen to these guys a whole bunch.
Strong and accessible
Bangerss?? Ja!!!
Varying flavors of hip-hop with a classic feel. Fun
Good album with multiple rappers. Liked the themes of the lyrics.
Joskus aikoinaan joku kaveri hypetti näiden musaa. En muista miksi ei aikanaan lähtenyt myös itsellä lentoon, mutta onhan tämä ihan rentoa meisinkiä ja varsinkin toimiva levy.
Good beats, reminds me of ATCQ
Great beats.
Glad to have listened to Jurassic 5 for the first time!
I Love it
Good. But there are similar records I like better.
Stellar classic rap album. Pivotal styling
Charlie 2na has one of the best voices in hip-hop. J5's harmonies and group floor is amazing. Cut Chemist and Numark also incredible.
solid boom bap
The flow is so damn good. Favorite tracks are Freedom and Remember His Name
Steady beat, not bad. Although not my bag, lean and tuneful which is more than I can say about some in this genre
Like it...tho not my usual stuff....wrap hiphop scratch funk jazz
Some great drum beats on this one, would listen again.
Solid hip hop
Slaps.
Not background music - need another listen to appreciate properly. It's got a good vibe though.
At a certain point, the boom-bap beats start to wear on you. There are also a few cuts near the end that drag the record down a little. However, the flows are technical and tight, and this is still an enjoyable listen. Favorite tracks: "Freedom", "What's Golden"
Great album, in some alternate universe they are bigger than anyone in the game. Wonderful variety of samples and guests. Thin line, Hey, and Freedom my top tracks, along with Kool Keith's DDT freestyle
I can’t believe I have never heard Jurassic 5 before! Lyrics that play on grammar (“pass” participles), reference DDT, and Herman Munster? What’s not to love. They also have that almost jazz-like groove that I love in digable planets and de la soul. Thanks 1001 albums, this is one I will be coming back to.
Хип-хоп нулевых с заявкой на олд скул 6,5/10
Great production, super laid-back vibe.
i didn’t expect to like this but i did!! and the first two songs blended together. loved it
This list is just making me biased towards any R&B group with a good balance of voices and talent. Thoroughly enjoyed this.
Okay, I see what they're dropping. I can dig this for sure. What's Golden is legit.
Not my normal listen but this is excellent, loved it.
I thoroughly enjoyed this. Didn’t know what to expect from This artist I had never heard of. Was not disappointed and will definitely listen again soon
Great alternative hip-hop! I love the sampling on this album, lots of vintage commercials/movies FAV TRACKS: If You Only Knew, Break, DDT, I Am Somebody, Acetate Prophets LEAST FAV TRACKS: Sum Of Us
Every beat on this album is incredible. And everyone on this album is an awesome rapper. The rhymes are much more hit than miss, and a lot of the songs have meaning, which wins big points with me. It’s a little long for my taste but otherwise this album absolutely earned its spot on this list.
Holy crap! I never heard this before?!?!? This is brilliant!
Great gaming
Jaja. Bra skit gillar att det är så studsigt och att det är så avslappnad rap. Gillar samplingen i Freedom gillar What’s Golden såklart och Hey.
Very nice beats, can’t believe I never listened to this band.
Вропне неплохой американский реп)
