Reviews (page 6 of 12)

Jurassic 5 should have had way more commercial success. Their music can make the gloomiest days feel bright and shiny.

Excellent old school hip hop.

the sheer fucking sleeze i felt listening to this album is second only to the grimiest blues. unfortunately substantial drop in quality from like track 13 - dont even mind hey that much, one of them just doesnt fucking work for me and the rest of the album kinda suffered for it i guess. tracks like thin line and whats golden make this a really reasonable listen. interludes feel consistent and not even that pretentious.

My favourite hip-hop album on this list yet (371 albums in). Great vibes, super enjoyable blend of hip-hop, funk and soul

8/10 Classic and very important album. Weak finish knocks it down Favourite Song=If Only You Knew Least Favourite Song=Acetate Prophets

Enjoyed a lot My kind of rap 8/10

Hadn't heard this album before, much enjoyment!

Hip hop. Pretty good and lyrically impressive. I was starting to get a little tired of it by the end but still really good.

Enjoyed - but not as much as debut album

Feels a little dated for 2002, but I do like that 90s style of rapping. I’ve never heard of Jurassic 5 before but I’m glad I have now.

Sick beats, nice flows. Really enjoyable.

This album is a total treat, and I was sad that I'd missed out on Jurassic 5 for so long. Power in Numbers was offered to me immediately after being assigned Straight Outta Compton, and to a music fan with limited experience with hip hop, the contrast could not be clearer: The flows are flowier, the lyrics are more intellectual, and the overall vibe and message are far more positive. A friend pointed out to me the early 2000s were a bad time for this album, when the industry was pushing hip hop that was either far edgier or more pop-oriented. Jurassic's alt-stylings - at times very reminiscent of Tribe - would undoubtedly have been a bigger hit if released in the mid-90s. But that's the blessing of finding albums after the fact: you can enjoy them on your own terms, and not by the whims of the market. And that's why I'll be coming back to Power in Numbers. Standout tracks: Thin Line, A Day at the Races Great album 4/5

Very good. It made me realize how badly I need a guide through the history and subgenres of hip hop. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out what I was responding so positively to. I like the sonic variety you get with multiple rappers with strongly different voices. I liked the way the samples had a very "live" sound - drums, horns, woodwinds, and base which, even if sampled, still carry the imprint of a live player. Lyrics which make an argument bigger than the individual. And it appears I'm a sucker for a good skit and a sample of movie or TV dialogue.

I think the production is uniformly excellent; every sample and musical backdrop is expertly crafted, leading to hooks on hooks on hooks. I think Akil, Soup, Charli 2na, and Marc 7 all have pretty solid flows/timbres, and the guest appearances all feel pretty natural and seamless as well. Really, really good shit. 4/5

Surprisingly very much enjoyed despite not being a genre I would typically be inho

I went into this album completely blind, and I am blown away. I cant believe I had almost zero expisure to Jurassic 5 in tbe past. They are reminiscent of A Tribe Called Quest. The album is clever, and has a strong R&B influence that blends so well with the lyricality. All of the artists have their distinct styles that come together so strongly. Overall- I really enjoyed it. I could definitely see putting this on the the future. I would say 4.5/5, but not quite at the 5 level.

i really thought "this sounds something off the soundtrack for 'jet set radio' or a 'tony hawk' game" and it turns out it's actually both. brilliant

Strong start but ending isn't as good. Despite the name, Jurassic 5 is a 4.

Only exposure to J5 was through the song Golden. The rest of the album lived up to that song. Great flow and beats. I love the positivity of the lyrical content.

I don't know what I thought Jurassic 5 was, but it wasn't this. This was great.

Not sure about the choice of woodwind instruments on if you only knew. It’s giving me Degrassi vibes(the episode where Connor, Dave and Wesley made their little weird auto tune song. iykyk). That being said, I do love music from the 2000s, and this is ticking a lot of those boxes.

This is a cool album - despite being a west-coast hip-hop album I think this does a great job of folding some of the best bits of East and South coast in there too. 'Hey' could have been an Outkast song.

I definitely want to give this album more listens in the future.

Great beats. Enjoyable.

The beats are crisp and tight. The lyrics feel thoughtful, with a laid-back flow that reminds me of A Tribe Called Quest, but with a bit more grit. There’s a blend of nostalgia and consciousness, like it’s from a time when hip hop was about connecting people. It has some playful moments, but it doesn’t always hit as hard as I hoped. Still, there’s a warm energy throughout that’s hard not to appreciate.

Sitting no car seat in the passenger side of my brothers mustang or in the back of my mom’s mini van.

First one on the list I haven't been aware of. Really like the laid back beats and flow Listening: on a strangely summery day in September. Favourite track: a day at the races

Definitely feel this album had a lot more going on than I got in one listen but I still really loved it. It feels like one of those albums that if I listened to more would be a 5 star but for now it’s a high 4.

College dorm room rap at it's finest. You know this one was rocking in the volvo.

Old School Hip-Hop mit sehr guten Texten, OG!

Good stuff. A variety of styles, grooves, sounds, and tempos. Funky, jazzy, old school. Super accessible for a hip-hop album.

Not as perfect as the first album but still exceptionally accomplished and hella catchy.

Great 90s hop-hop.

Was actually a fun listen. Not peak or anything, but very enjoyable

I have to be honest, I was a little weary to get a second hip-hop album from 2002 very closely after getting A Little Deeper by Ms. Dynamite. After enduring that album for a hour of my life that I’m not getting back, I didn’t know how this album would go. Thankfully, it seems like the generator wanted to make up for giving that previous album because this was so much better. The titular five give the album a great flow while also maintain socially conscious without having too much edge. I have no idea how I never heard of these guys. The album did lose a little steam at the end (the six-minute sample song at the end just felt out of place and took me a bit out of it), but this was a very pleasant surprise. Favorite Track: Thin Line Other Hits: Freedom, High Fidelity, A Day at the Races, Sum Of Us, If You Only Knew

From one conscious hip-hop inspired record to another. Although this is significantly less aggressive and in your face as yesterday’s was. Hilarious that they both have a song titled Freedom though. This album isn’t that politically charged. But there are definitely some choice words regarding the Black American experience which lead it in that direction. To be completely honest, I was anticipating a complete dud here. I’ve become prone to expect that from hip-hop albums I am not already familiar with. They rarely do much for me. But as I’ve mentioned many times, I am still in the process of learning to not judge a book by its cover. But now, I can say this is one of the most underrated hip-hop albums I’ve ever heard. It reminds me of the same feeling I had when I heard The Renaissance by Q-Tip for the first time. I thought, “How are people not talking about this more?” It gets off to an amazing start, but even after that beginning stretch of really great tracks, it is consistently entertaining. This group and the energy they present here really reminds me of A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul at their absolute peaks. And since the former was on hiatus, and the latter was going through a rough period, this is easily the next best thing. Rarely do the instrumentals delve into anything super complex. But they are effective and serve the purpose they are meant for. Tribe had a very similar mentality. Beats don’t need to be overly flashy or filled with super impressive ideas to be interesting. And I’m always a sucker for hip-hop instrumentals with a little bit of funk and rock thrown in. This is simultaneously reminiscent of the 90s and also some of the best early 2000s rap out there. There’s even a fantastic feature from Nelly Furtado on one song. I love finding little hidden gems like this, and it’s unfortunate that these guys haven’t gotten that much love over the years. Because they deserve it. Rating: 8/10

Hottolainen! Makee räppilevy joka on duunattu hyvällä maulla! 4/5

Letkeä ja pätevä platta! 4/5

This is an album I never knew I needed in my life. This is, Freedom and break are a strong start to the album. they are great song with variety and strong lyrics. Favourite song: A day at the races Least favourite: Fanstastic album. I couldnt fault a track Album artwork: Cool cover

Pretty good! It’s that kind of optimistic (if slightly corny) 90s-style hip hop that I always have a soft spot for. It started off really strong and dropped off a bit as it went; I was going to dock a star for being overlong, but that doesn’t seem quite fair. Maybe a 3.5. As an aside, “What’s Golden” somehow dredged up memories of the PS2 game “ATV Offroad Fury 2.” I have no idea how that game lay dormant in my brain for 20 years, but a Google search confirmed that it was on the soundtrack. Wild.

Wonderfully concious and simultaneously light hearted hip hop album. A Day at the Races permanently lives in my head rent free from Tony Hawks Underground 2. My one concerns is the lack of contributions Jurrasic 5 has had to the genre. Always often in the background shrouded in mystery, with like 3 albums in 30 years. One would assume that talent and praise of such a rap super group would have demonstrated more consistent releases. But, fuck do i know.

The kind of conscious-rap that could easily feel dorky and cringe but this is assuredly not that. Pretty amazing in fact. Neither the production or performances are showy or gaudy but they are so consistently great. Many great songs (though the last few don’t do much for me, unfortunately) but Thin Line takes the top spot in the first few listens.

some classic fun hip hop

Fun, hype, rebellious hip-hop. Stand-out: A Day At The Races

proper hip-hop

Already rated as Album #1? Same 4 stars

Really enjoyed this, solid the whole way through

Such smooth style with real messages

Rating: 9/10 Amazing album overall. The synergy and interplay of all of the group members is absolutely infectious. The lyrics, wordplay, and production are fantastic throughout and each member has their own unique style and voice. The lyrical content could have been more diversified; a lot of songs just seem to be braggadocios. Despite this, was surprised that I never heard this before and how great this is. Favorite songs: Freedom, Break, A Day At The Races, Remember His Name, What's Golden, Thin Line, After School Special, High Fidelity, Sum Of Us, I Am Somebody. Least favorite song: One Of Them.

This feels like an Album that Dan Kocman would be stoked about. This album is great. The production is excellent and the mix of voices feels so classic, an extension of the furious 5 or the sugarhill gang. I think it's a real shame that at this same time, NWA, 2pac, Nas, and BIG were becoming the face of hip hop. Not that those guys aren't great, but it feels like it really squashed what was left of the old guard of artists making music in that sing song style. Guys like Snoop Dogg who started out more like that shifted their style into the 2000s. Ultimately, the worst thing to happen to rap was the feature culture where they would stick Juicy J on a Katy Perry song for 45 seconds but that's another story. These guys are great. Having a dedicated or in this case two DJ's makes the tracks feel connected and consistent. Not only that but the production on these is really strong with very cool percussion that seems to me pretty influential. The rapping is all good and the hooks are pretty excellent. I am a big fan of dedicated DJs/Producers. Run the Jewels, Death Grips, and my favorite, Brockhampton. I think it matters a lot more than people realize and it's part of why artists like Drake get more plays on their singles than their albums. They're just all over the place and he can't seem to nail down one style for an entire album. Back to the Power in Numbers. The opening is strong. The Nelly Furtado feature on thin line is sweet and the closing track is powerful and interesting. Overall really solid album, will probably relisten.

Was not expecting a Nelly Furtado feature lol.

I thought this was pretty good. I'm not normally a fan of hip-hop, but this was pleasing to my ears.

I was shocked how much I enjoyed this. I’ve already gone back to it again. And will do so again.

This was an incredible album - thoughtful and provoking. I got chills when I heard the last line of Remember Hi Name.

It's hip hop, not a huge fan, but this was ok, actually groovy and head bump inducing...

Not much to say other than a solid effort on the part of the group. It's definitely worth listening to for those interested in the genre or maybe looking for something different than what they normally listen to.

I quite like the alternative hip hop scene although I am fairly new to it and it wasn't something I grew up listening to when I generally formed most of my music taste. This album was very good, felt modern and quite old at the same time.

A slay. Felt very lived in

The flows on 'A Day At the Races' are insane. Musicality aside, the lyricism is amazing as well; both impressive wordplay and cultural relevance. I'm also a big fan of the scratching on this record. This is my first introduction to this group, and I can't wait to dive into them. Standout tracks: 'Freedom', 'If You Only Knew', the aforementioned 'A Day At the Races', 'Sum of Us', 'Acetate Prophets'. Most of these songs are great, those are just my personal favourites.

Such an underrated album. Jurassic 5 rock.

Yes I am liking this a lot, and probably need to replay. On the cusp of joining the very few CDs I've bought as a result of this exercise - 2 exactly, one Iggy Pop, one Pavement. Solid 4 stars.

Another great album! I’ve never really listened to Jurassic 5 before, I’m sure I have heard a few tracks but never gave them a deep dive. Glad I did this is definitely something I will circle back to.

Love J5, but it's been a while since I've heard this all the way thru (thanks to Robert for tipping me off to these guys). It's a very good album. Good beats, great lyrics. Love the verbal interactions between the MCs. Cut Chemist and Nu-Mark shine with their production - seriously two of the best DJs around (still!). BUT, I still prefer the debut album "Quality Control" a little more. So 4 stars for me, it's just a little less impressive. Random Thoughts: One of the best throwaway lines ever - "we tight like dreadlocks or Red Foxx and Ripple" A Day At The Races is probably THE stand out track for me.

Decent. Didn’t blow me away, but nothing bad about the record.

Power in Numbers is the third album from Jurassic 5, an LA based hip hop collective. Jurassic 5 made tracks that are more melodic and rhythmic than the rap of the era; the result is a much more danceable product. This album includes a variety of styles: from danceable, "instrumental" sample tracks, like "Acetate Prophets," to melodic rap, like "Freedom," Jurassic 5 made an engaging version of hip hop with the danceable sense of club electronica and elements from jazz to give the songs a rich texture. J 5 adds an element that comes from four voices, rapping together, giving a potency - perhaps a harmony - to their work.

Great verses, the old school rap and good album in general, liked Nelly Furtado on it and Jurassics vocals are really good Honestly I thought I would find this album boring but its great

I always put this below Quality Control but it’s actually a pretty great album. The drums are super crisp and overall great production value.

Chali2na and Cut Chemist carry this group but still a great album and great memories seeing them live

Finally some good tunes.

This is really cool--seems to touch on a lot of different Hip Hop styles and flows. These guys play off on each other well.

Surprisingly really great - loved the production and felt that most, if not all, tracks were a really enjoyable listen. 8/10

This fits right in with ATCQ, Digable Planets, etc. Powerful MCs.

This rocks! I generally prefer my hip hop with very stripped down production. But the jazzy instrumentals (with flute!) applied here don’t take any power away from the MC. if anything it’s a perfect compliment. In an era where the music industry was pushing violence and misogyny in their hip hop, it’s also really nice to see a group focus on conciseness. I hear a lot of Tribe Called Quest influence here, and I’m NOT complaining.

Whats golden Thin line A day at the races

Solid beats, one of the better hip-hop albums I listened to. DDT freestyle is sick.

Fantastic!

It was good. Have never heard of this band, but liked it on the first listen through.

Some very good stand out tracks but some tracks could have maybe been cut.

Songs like I Am Somebody, Acetate Prophets, and What's Golden really stood out on this album. Overall a fun example of alt hip hop that occasionally felt a bit boring, to be honest (not a huge fan of when they all rap together, sorry) but overall was nicely done. Don't think I'll be revisiting the album again but those three tracks were definitely standouts for me! 3.9

That was a fun trip to the past! I was a massive fan of the first Jurassic 5 album but this mostly passed me by as life got a bit hectic around then. Anyway this is a superb hip hop album. Right mix of jazz and beats without any fluffy. I need to get back into listening to more of this band

Super Duper

J5, never heard of ‘em. Don’t mistake ‘em for some corny ass crew though, they’re actually good. All songs listenable, some fun, some funny, some political. Album rates (3.8*s)

This is some good shit. Listened to this group in college and was not really that into it but this go around it slaps. It's got some throw back 90s hip hop appeal and some darker refined tracks. I prefer the DJ Nu-Mark production over Cut Chemist but both can produce a funky beat. Sum of Us and Remember His Name are tops. I'm not feeling Chali 2na as much as the other emcees though but I still give this album a decent rating...3.55.

Don’t usually listen to this type of music, but it was banging. Taking off a star as I got a bit bored towards the end.

Never heard it before, but it was awesome.

First time listening to Jurassic 5 properly. This was so sick. Excellent 'beats', or whatever the kids say. Favourite tracks: Freedom, If You Only Knew, Remember His Name, Thin Line, After School Special, One Of Them.

Production good but lyrics a bit naff

This surprised the hell out of me. This a head bopper for sure.

I hadn’t even heard of boom bap as a genre a couple of years ago. Now, I’m finding that the hip hop albums I enjoy the most seem to be tagged as this genre. All I know is that, despite being released in 2002, this felt very 90s to me. And that is a very good thing. This had me bopping away and having a really good time. The beats and the rhythms are great, and I adored the rapping. Each member sounds so natural, it’s hard to imagine that rap isn’t their main mode of communication.

Nice to hear some funky hip hop with rappers who aren't too far up themselves to put an effort into making actually good music that plays well with the instruments. This album does a lot of experimentation (most noticeably on *Acetate Prophets*), but it rarely feels out of place - all these things are integrated in a whole. This is one of the best hip hop albums I've heard, but it's not really a genre I like that much in general, so a 5 would be too much, but it can carry a 4.

They've pretty much got it. All of it. Good beats, good lyrics, good flow. They even got Nelly Furtado.

chw me re gustó! 8/10

This stuff is fresh as hell, such a different style of rap with an incredible flow. The beats are simple but will most definitely move your head. The album as a whole has a digestible vibe and creates an electric atmosphere. Really pleased with this one. Deserves some rotation.

fed, i hvert fald 3/5. men tænker nok 4/5 :) :) :)

Like it alot

I’ve not much previous on these guys but I like ‘em. Some really funky baselines and beats, and finally some non gangsta lyrics. A couple of bangers for me (What’s Golden and Thin line), it’s pretty smooth and varied to keep it consistently engaging and enjoyable. Will listen to more of their stuff….

Bit of a turn up, bit sick of hip hop but enjoyed this immensely. Great mixing by cut chemist and funky upbeat beats. All new to me and will revisit ... unlike gangster rap, which is shit.

Listening to this was the first time I have ever heard of this group, and that is too bad because this is a stellar record! The composition of the tracks feels very much like hip hop from 20 years earlier, like they could completely exist within the 1980s. However, the production, samples, and instrumentation feels very much like hip hop still around as I write this twenty years later in the 2020s. While I didn't pick up on all of the lyrics in this first listen, what I did was refreshing light compared to much of the rap coming out and filling the limelight at the time. With great beats and good variety of sounds between each track, I look forward to revisiting this album again!

"Some of you like the way my words caress tracks While some of these politicians secretly suppress facts" Fantastic album. Community centered and progressive lyrics, funky beats and overall just a fun listen. 4.5/5

Love these guys! The beats, the lyrics- they are fantastic!

I really enjoyed this album. The variety of the singers voices really help keep things fresh. Good beats, good lyrics.

Super solid album. Love this still of hip hop. 4/5

I liked it. I’m not a fan of rap music but I thought these guys were clever. I listened to it twice.

A jam. I was bobbing my head from the first song all thr way through.

Great backing tracks!

Great album with great flow. I especially like chali 2nas deep baritone

Old-school hip hop that still holds up

Huh. Another seemingly random “fourth studio album” with no hits or anything really to make it special… But this kinda slaps. I’m not usually big on hip hop but this is a fun time. Good message. Good beats. Creative lyrics. I dig it. Songs added to Spotify: 1

One of the rare times I listenend happily to a hip hop album, multiple times. Last few tracks didn't impress me but overall is a very good listen

What’s Golden was a staple for me awhile back, but has faded since. I still enjoy this. They’re kind of the successor to the hip hop artists of the 80s.

I like Jurassic 5 but like many other artists, they aren't a group I know well or have really sought out at any point. Unique vibes, some cool bassy beats. Listening to this album makes me want to check out more.

Nice! Glad to see this on the list, one of my all-time favorite hip hop albums (along w/ their first one). Wasn’t expecting it.

Awesome rap album! Spreading positivity while speaking from the heart and staying true to the roots of hip-hop. This is from 2002 but it feels like a classic.

So close to a five, just felt some of it was a little too "lyrical spiritual individual" style rapping. Really enjoyed this tho, was nodding my head along to almost every song

Pretty good

Very satisfying listen, good lyrics, each song flows well and most are bops. Favourites: freedom, if you only knew, break, a day at the races, remember his name (kind of reminded me of Hamilton sorry), what's golden, sum of us, I am somebody. High 4/5, could be a 5 if I listened more and gave it some time.

Started off a bit slow for me, but I definitely warmed up to the songs as I moved through the album. I should be learning how to code right now but I am dedicated to this generator so here we are. Highlights are If You Only Knew, Remember His Name, What's Golden, Thin Line, After School Special, High Fidelity, One Of Them, and Hey. Fun and fresh, this was very good. Another high 4

Four MCs and two DJs, J5 made fresh beats with a throwback classic hip hop feel. A solid album but one I rarely reach for, despite enjoying at the time.

I had forgotten about these guys. Great album.

Cool album I’ve not heard before. I like this era of hip hop rap. I didn’t at the time, but I’ve warmed to it in my prime. I’ll go a few more rounds here, and see where it leads.

Quite good

Great vibes, cuts and samples.

I believe it will be a rap album. This is First song starts with a callto the audience. It then immediately gets into the song. There might be some reggae influences Freedom This started using samples, I believe it is a reggae style rap album. I was right. It is very flow heavy. It is hip-hop with some reggae influences, I guess it is about the civil rights movement. This is why it has reggae influences. Reggae was popularized by Jamaica If only you knew Jazzy rap, it is 100% about the civil rights movement. This is the best album I have listened to on here so far. It has a nice flow. The flute is a bit annoying but necessary to fill the gaps, if the flute was a bit quieter it would be better. It shows promise lyrically but ceebs reading the lyrics, ima draw or read instead. Okay, the flute needs to stop, it’s overused. At least take a break from using it. The epilogue is just a speech and it sounds like it is Australian, they were talking about Gold Coast and Melbourne and had an Aussie accent Break Decent so far Forgot to write anything else React Jazzy rap. Motorbike sample? A day at the races Remember his name Strange opening but somehow it works, this album has some crazy transitions so far, not really my favourite song but not bad What’s golden Kinda eh opening, don’t really like the bass in this song. Probably one of my least fabourite, I like the choppy samples, remind me of mf doom thin line Alright but not much to say about it. Not really unique. The chorus is nice though, very catchy. Pretty good afterschool special Fire intro holy shit, already my favourite, hopefully it stays this way. I like the real life conversation interludes, it makes it seem more real and makes you remember it’s not just music, but the message someone is trying to prove high fidelity Alright so far, melody is kinda meh, beat is good, and I like the MF doom style samples sum of us Marimba intro?! What the bum. Same thing as the previous song. I like the rap flow though. DDT An interlude, just a conversation, cool interlude though, it has a good flow and is about DDT one of them Decent. hey What the fuck. Why is this actually good. Same praise as most songs, good samples, good rhyme flow. I am somebody Nice best and melody and flow. Acetate prophets. Conversation intro. Fire drum beat and samples. The melody is kinda meh. Lots of melody changes Favorite song: afterschool special Least favorite song: what’s golden 4 stars 8/10

This Is - yeah its an intro fs Freedom - The beat is good, good song about true freedom. 4/5 If You Only Knew - I really like the flute thingy and keyboard. Good affront on prejudice I think. 4/5 Break - So many references. Chorus is nice. 4/5 React - is this the real break? A Day At The Races - the flow on this is really nice. I feel like the guitar adds something really nice on this. Jordan shade unnecessary. 4.5/5 Remember His Name - damn. 5/5 What's Golden - Just very good. 4.5/5 Thin Line - Hmm idk about this lesson 3.5/5 After School Special - Yeah. Give the kid a beat wtf. 4/5 High Fidelity - Silly ass beat. 3.5/5 Sum Of Us - I LOVE PROTEST AND NOT UNFAIRLY JUDGING PEOPLE AND HEALING RAHHHH. 4.5/5 DDT - Is this the real break?? One Of Them - Very aggressive idk how to feel about this one. 3/5 Hey - this one just osunds fucking stupid i dont really like this. The beats okay thats about it. 2/5 I Am Somebody - Very uplifting maybe. 1:20 - 1:30 kind of pissed me off for some reason idk. The beat is a bit annoying to me as well. 3/5 Acetate Prophets - You can not just sample shit for 5 minutes an then get some reggae as shit on this. No. 2.5/5

prediction: album seems to have heavy environmental influences with things such as DDT, freedom, I am somebody and acetate prophets. power in numbers and the album cover refers to protest and i believe this will be a rock album this is: reggae influences? this is more of an intro/prelude so theres not a whole lot to say. the record sounds are nice and the double bass is cool. the lead in to freedom is crazy freedom: heads boppin. the soulful vocals are cool, they sound choppy like theyve been sampled. sounds like this could be a hip hop album with reggae influences if only you knew: very jazzy. sounds like a tribe called quest. this album is 100% about the civil rights movement. this song is really cool. the piano riff is punch and nice. the chorus of rappers is so cool. the flute is a littleeee annoying but it still adds to the atmosphere. this album shows promise lyrically and i think that will be a core element. added to my playlist. crazy segway Break: WE PUT QUALITY FIRST, the lyrics here are powerful and the playing with the record scratches are really cool. React: interlude but its experimental A day at the races: music power. i love the announcer at the start of these songs. the bass is really sick. the flow from the rappers is sooo tribe reminiscent and its cool. reference to grandmaster flash's 'the message' remember his name: crazy transitions and interludes. the phone sound effects are cool. insane title drop at the end 'his name is death' what's golden: very very crunchy bass, the wham on the organ is sick. little hints of brass. and much like the other songs the flow is nice and similar to a tribe called quest. cool record scratching the music ha music section is really cool and jazzy. thin line : cool and choppy, the intro instrumentals are villainous, DOOM style. the running guitar is nice around 1 min or before. politically conscious lyrics while still being sonically interesting. chorus is catchy after school special: im a sucker for these real life conversation interludes, they make the story seem more genuine and organic. High Fidelity: the wind instrument or whatever it is sounds nice and reminds me of DOOMS the mouse and the mask. sum of us : DDT: this interlude is really cool. the interludes on this album are all hits one of them : crazy transition. that piano is very dark sounding. lyrically this is very cool but I don't fw the beat. nwa reference is sick. the ending of this song is funny Hey: wtf is this start and why is it good. the piano bouncing between left and right channels is the distinctive feature of this track and its cool. I am somebody: tuned out a little tbh but the lyrics are cools and the trumpet sounding thing is cool. parts of it are very soul sounding which is cool. acetate prophets: honestly it's OK but the jungle-y beat isn't for me. when the beat switches up it becomes better but that takes 3 minutes. some Spanish influences here. Japanese ahh guitar Favourites: Break, a day at the races, whats golden, hey Least favourite: one of them, acetate prophets 8/10

Need to listen to more J5

Would have never expected to enjoy hearing a flute in a hip hop album but “If you only knew” does it well. What’s golden feels like a definitive 90s hip hop sound and if an alien asked what that genre sounds like this song would be towards the top of the list of songs to play.

First heard this group from a demo cassette handed out at warped tour back in 2000. Bought this when it released and it still holds up really well.

4.5. One of them is kinda wack but this is essential hip hop listening.

Just dope rapping, production and sampling. I can't believe I've been sleeping on this album. The last 6 or so tracks were just back-to-back incredible and a great way to close out the album.

Hey, take a Break and give this a listen. This Is an After School Special. If You Only Knew

Had never heard of this album/group, interesting to place it alongside 90s and early 2000s hip hop. Felt like it rounded out a lot of stuff I had heard as more breaks/beat-focused. I probably prefer more sample-focused stuff, but good stuff all around. This also kind of filled in a gap around like a lot of hip hop in video games of this era.

Favourite song - Thin line

"Power in Numbers" is the sophomore studio album by the American alternative hip-hop group Jurassic 5, released in 2002. It marked a significant continuation of the group's signature sound, blending old-school rap influences with innovative production and socially conscious lyricism. Here's an in-depth review covering lyrics, music, production, themes, and influence, along with the album's pros and cons. **Lyrics:** Jurassic 5's lyrical content in "Power in Numbers" is characterized by a blend of positivity, social commentary, and skilled wordplay. The group's five MCs—Chali 2na, Akil, Zaakir (formerly known as Soup), Marc 7, and Cut Chemist—deliver clever rhymes and intricate flows throughout the album. Tracks like "Freedom" and "Thin Line" tackle issues of personal struggle and societal injustice with eloquence and depth. The lyrics often carry a message of empowerment and unity, reflecting the group's name and ethos. **Music:** Musically, "Power in Numbers" is a testament to Jurassic 5's ability to blend various elements of hip-hop, funk, and soul into a cohesive sound. The group's use of catchy hooks, infectious beats, and soulful samples creates a vibrant sonic landscape that captivates listeners from start to finish. Tracks like "What's Golden" and "A Day at the Races" showcase the group's knack for crafting memorable melodies and infectious rhythms that keep heads nodding. **Production:** The production on "Power in Numbers" is top-notch, thanks in part to the skilled work of Cut Chemist and DJ Nu-Mark, who handle the majority of the beats. The album's production is characterized by its use of funky basslines, jazzy instrumentals, and crisp drum breaks that pay homage to the golden era of hip-hop while still sounding fresh and innovative. The seamless integration of live instrumentation and sampling adds depth and texture to the album's sound, creating a rich listening experience for fans of all musical backgrounds. **Themes:** Thematically, "Power in Numbers" explores a wide range of topics, from personal introspection to social commentary. Tracks like "If You Only Knew" and "Remember His Name" delve into the struggles of everyday life, while others, such as "Freedom" and "One of Them," address issues of political oppression and systemic inequality. Throughout the album, Jurassic 5 emphasizes the importance of unity, resilience, and self-expression, making it a rallying cry for listeners seeking inspiration and empowerment. **Influence:** "Power in Numbers" had a significant influence on the alternative hip-hop scene of the early 2000s and beyond. Its innovative production techniques, socially conscious lyricism, and positive message helped solidify Jurassic 5's reputation as pioneers of the genre. The album's success paved the way for other artists to explore similar themes and musical styles, shaping the landscape of hip-hop for years to come. Additionally, Jurassic 5's emphasis on collaboration and camaraderie set an example for future generations of artists looking to make their mark on the industry. **Pros:** 1. Strong lyricism: Jurassic 5's MCs deliver clever rhymes and insightful commentary throughout the album. 2. Innovative production: The album's beats and instrumentals are fresh, funky, and highly engaging. 3. Socially conscious themes: "Power in Numbers" tackles important issues such as injustice, oppression, and empowerment with depth and sincerity. 4. Positive message: The album's overall message of unity, resilience, and self-expression resonates with listeners of all backgrounds. 5. Musical diversity: Jurassic 5 seamlessly blends elements of hip-hop, funk, and soul to create a dynamic and eclectic sound. **Cons:** 1. Lack of diversity in vocal delivery: While the MCs of Jurassic 5 are undeniably skilled, their vocal delivery can feel somewhat repetitive at times. 2. Occasional pacing issues: Some tracks on the album drag on longer than necessary, detracting from the overall listening experience. 3. Limited thematic exploration: While "Power in Numbers" touches on important social issues, it occasionally lacks depth in its exploration of these themes. 4. Over-reliance on nostalgia: While the album pays homage to the golden era of hip-hop, it occasionally feels like it's stuck in the past rather than pushing the genre forward. 5. Uneven cohesion: While the album features standout tracks, it lacks the overall cohesiveness of a truly classic hip-hop album. In conclusion, "Power in Numbers" is a strong sophomore effort from Jurassic 5, showcasing the group's lyrical prowess, musical innovation, and commitment to social activism. While it may have its flaws, the album remains a standout work in the alternative hip-hop canon, inspiring listeners with its positive message and infectious energy. With its timeless themes and innovative production, "Power in Numbers" continues to resonate with audiences long after its release, solidifying its status as a classic of the genre.

Good rap album, Nelly Furtado feature is a plus.

Nice walk down a new cul de sac of memory lane. Really enjoyed this.

One of the weirdest hip-hop shows I ever saw, outside of Busta Rhymes playing St. Olaf College's gym, was Jurassic 5 playing Ford Amphitheater in Vail for the Teva Mountain Games like in 2004. This was after I missed J5 play my alma mater, Luther, during my junior year because I was studying abroad in Paris. Whoever booked that Vail show should've gotten all the medals handed out at that year's Mountain Games ... while "What's Golden" played as an anthem in the background. This is definitely the high-water mark for these guys. "What's Golden" is a certified hip-hop classic, but I especially love "Thin Line" and "Remember His Name." Just some out-of-the-ordinary hip-hop, which is why J5 gets labeled "alternative." Whatever it is, it's dope. And I'm glad I eventually got to interview Chali 2na when he toured behind his solid debut solo record. They just don't make hip-hop like they used to.

Laatua.. ei petä eikä mattoa lata vedä.. ei ala pelleilemään kun amnetaan luotto..

Great album - love a bit of J5

Really interesting and cool album. I wasn’t too particular to the lyrics, but the instrumentals are really great and engaging. When I did catch some of the lyrics they were good. The only negative thing I can say about the album is I wish that the lyrics captivated me as much as the background, and that it does unfortunately fall into some corny/ weird 90s rapping. Standouts: Freedom, Break, What’s Golden, Sum of Us, I Am Somebody, and Acetate Prophets.

this was sick

Great album, with a cohesive vibe and an impressive flow. Serious, often thoughtful lyrics, but Jurassic 5 never loses track of the fact that if you're going to deliver a message, you need a solid groove. Fave Songs: A Day at the Races, Acetate Prophets, Remember His Name, High Fidelity, Freedom, Thin Line, I Am Somebody

A slow start, but this album was pretty great. Nice contributions from all, great sampling from the DJs. Favourite tracks: A day at the races, Remember his name, DDT, and Acetate Prophets.

What's Golden is the standout with its super grimy beat, but the whole record is strong. The tracks are varied, pulling from different genres and styles. Minimal filler, no interludes. The second half is weaker, keeping it from earning top marks, but would definitely play this one again.

8/10 very solid definitely that sweet spot of hip hop for me

Quintessential post-90's hip hop.

Sounds really good

I don't usually like rap, but I liked this

Classic J5. In rotation still every once in a while.

Never heard of these guys before. This one surprised me in a good way. Solid beats. Dope rhythms. Smooth rhymes. Love the 70s funk influence. Enjoyed this one.

3.5 stars. Fun and flowy. Catchy rap style. Beats are easy. Standout "Break", "What's Golden".

Classic 90's hip-hop. Sweet soul, blues and jazz samples with superb flow, rhymes and humour all having the clear undercurrent of political messaging. If you haven't lisetned to this lot yet, you're missing out. Best Tracks: If You Only Knew; A Day at the Races; What's Golden

Awesome early '00 hiphop. Kind of a supergroup with a lot of talent and experience crafting catchy tracks with honest lyrics.

Classic West Coast underground hip hop that has rightfully enjoyed mainstream success. Jurassic 5 is a textbook example of a 90's/2000's hip hop group done right. The rappers bounce off of each other and overlay their verses in an organized chaos, always giving the listener the feeling they are part of some greater cause, while still maintaining the effortless flowing style typic of many of their LA contemporaries. The sample-based production is also insane, with great variety of style, including a couple sample-only DJ scratch tracks. The album does begin to drag a little as the tempos slow toward the end, and could have benefitted from cutting a couple tracks from the official album to mixtapes or deluxe editions. Still, a fantastic record that exemplifies the best of the LA underground scene. Stand out tracks include "Freedom", "Break", "React", "Remember His Name", "What's Golden", and "After School Special".

I love this album. Do not listen to it as much as I probably should but there was a point in my life I had this on rotation. Great classic album.

So underrated.

I am not really interested in hip-hop but this was great, the beats & rhythms and the overall flow of the album was superb. It is an hour long album but I didn't feel like it was too long or monotonous.

This must have caught me on a good day, going out for a long walk with warm, sunny weather even before official Spring. Irresistibly invigorating rhythms, exemplary complementary collaboration, and an electo-magnetic broadcast on a positive wavelength. All this to say this was not a lazy effort... and then I begin to acknowledge that I have a bias or prejudice against some forms of expression in the broad genre of hip-hop. You can tell when my bias is flaring up as I say something like "mumbly auto-tune," suggesting that the performers are less legitimate as artists or, well, performers. I can own up to my logical breakdown as this bias has no leg to stand on. That mumbly auto-tune style is just a different form of expression and does not make it less technically/aesthetically/artistically valid. It's only fair to subjectively judge it based on personal preference. With that disclaimer, I'm really energized with how Jurassic 5 were not lazy when they put this together!

Okay. I just want to start this review with something that caught me off guard in the best way possible. When I was doing the research about this album, I found out who the members of Jurassic 5 are. The name "Chali 2na" stood out to me because I knew for a fact that I had heard the name somewhere before. I just wasn't sure what it was. Lo and behold, he was Neil DeGrasse Tyson in an Epic Rap Battles of History video. I had no idea that that guy was a legitimately successful rapper in a somewhat popular group! Anyways, this album is actually quite good. I like it. It kind of makes me feel similar things to how I felt listening to Fly or Die by N.E.R.D. Most of this album has this positive energy to it that is always nice to see. The flow in this album is amazing in my opinion. It just lines up well. The members actually play off of each other very well. The beats are nice. The writing is solid. My one complaint is that the song "One of Them" feels pretty out of place in this album. That's really it. I like this album quite a bit. 4/5.

I quite liked this album had some groove to it I enjoyed thin line, album was definitely outside of what I usually listen to but didn’t dislike it I think I’d have to give it a 3.5 or a 4 if it was the genre I usually listen to i would usually listen to it might be higher so ill give it a 4

Бодрый рэпчина. Позитивный такой, не мешает, но и не выделяется особо.

Awesome beats. We need more ez jazz rap on here. High Fidelity and Sum of Us are the best songs. Last couple songs don’t hit as great as the first half. But ez 4.5

A complete surprise. If you only knew to A day at the races is fantastic. 4.5

4.2 - Loved this, but is that cos it's quite easy listening and good vibes?

as with a lot of the hip-hop groups' albums on this list, the pristine production quality is matched by energetic and varied rapping that just results in some great feel-good music. definitely will be adding this to other similar albums i've discovered from the 90s and 00s for relistening. also, was not expecting nelly furtado, a familiar voice, making 'thin line' one of my favourites. however this album unfortunately has 17 tracks and i am yet to witness an album of this scope be flawless throughout, with a few okay tracks my rating is brought down to a 4.

Not being a hip-hop fan I’ve probably missed the old-skool references, though for some reason I can hear Mothership Connection deep in the background. But I more than enjoyed this album - it’s the down tempo mixed with instrumentals, the interplay of four voices within changing textures that held my attention - that, and Charli 2na’s voice being just gorgeous - as well as in the poetry overall and DDT in particular. Definitely on my ‘go to’ list now.

The non rap songs were mid but the rap was dope. Great flow.

After Li’l Kim changed rap to a sex-game and Nelly turned into club bop, I thought rap was dead. I could have used this album in 2002 to prove it wasn’t. Favorite tracks incl. High Fidelity and amazingly the groove-driven instrumental Acetate Prophets. This is getting listened to again….

Pretty good biased towards hip hop though

Big feel good album with some great bars on it, insane basslines and good use of samples. Thoroughly enjoyed, definitely will have this on in the summer Stand out songs - Freedom - React - Thin line

Favourite tracks: Thin Line, After School Special and If You Only Knew. An instant classic upon first listen.

Not generally the kind of music I listen to. Was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. Reminds me of old school rap.

I would have picked Quality Control or J5. However, this is a fine album. It threads the needle of gangster and conscious rap. The mcs are insane and have a unique interaction. NuMark and Cut Chemist are brilliant.

Jurassic 5 is the band I mention when I tell people I don't hate all rap.

Op zich wel leuk, de beats gaan ko

My side quest to become a hip hop fan has been greatly boosted by this album - I loved it! Favourite tracks: A Day at the Races.

This is the only J5 album I know, but I remember listening to it a lot when it first came out. I still like it and enjoyed playing it start to finish this week.

Pretty good album. Still have no real understanding of when I'll like a hiphop thing or I won't. I enjoyed this one though. 3.5/5

Jurassic 5 isn’t a name I’ve heard in a while, but this is good shit. Had fun listening to these guys again. B

old school hh mit querflöte aus den nuller-jahren, chillig und politisch

Really good. What has happened to hip hop?

When I first decided to dive deeper into hip hop back in the mid aughts, Jurassic 5 were one of my favorites. And I really liked this one. And it still holds up, I think. With the glaring exception of one song that is super judgy about vain people and gets weirdly homophobic, I liked this.

Enjoyed this more than I thought i would. Was a fan of the music and found many of the lyrics fantastic.

Yikes! This was absolutely mega. Considering it was outside of my genre wheelhouse, I enjoyed this so much. What was particularly nice was that it felt very different lyrically to a lot of other hip hop we've had so far. Self-empowering without falling into Instagram post cliché, positive but not cheesy, and by and large avoiding the sexist pitfalls of their contemporaries. Loved it to bits.

Lots of funky stuff here! What a fun album!

Had some great flow, fun to listen to

This is a pretty decent album. I like that Chali 2na is part of this group. I really like his voice and delivery. I'm pleasantly surprised. I like rap albums where the lyrics really flow with the music and not sounding like a train wreck like so much crap out there. Seriously, this album is pretty sweet.

Day38 - another cool album i wouldn’t have given a chance to. discovering stuff like this is what make this so much fun y

I'd never heard of this band before, and I'm generally not a fan of hip hop, but I liked this album. I've heard "You're Golden" somewhere before, but no idea where. 3.5/5 rounding up

Enjoyed the album. Slightly above average. 3.5/5

I'm not super familiar with these guys despite having seen them live on two different occasions. I thought this was pretty good though. I would definitely listen to it again.

Great album

mega chill å spille minecraft til

Smooth to listen to.

Not something I usually listen to but i enjoyed!

Nice. Lots of fun. A bit of the avalanches?

Goes hard. A great hip-hop album with a nice old-school feel. Funky, groovy and overall just good. If You Only Knew my favorite so far. The flute and piano just add a really cool touch. Will listen more. 7.7/10

Love me some old school hip hop

Jurassic 5's 2002 album title tells you everything you have to know about this record. Despite not having more members than your usual hip-hop group, the posse elements of this group are amplified as the album is filled with the members building off the momentum established by the previous members. For the first few tracks, you never hear a single member's verse for too long before the baton is passed to the next MC. The group stands out in the bling-era hip-hop that was starting to make waves around this time, sticking to the roots of hip-hop production. Beats are bassy, funky, and filled with DJ scratching courtesy of producers/DJs DJ Nu-Mark and Cut Chemist. The instrumentals are varied generally, but all stick to a similar cohesive theme. It's not rare to find a song that has a sample filled, or beat switched outro (Like "I am Somebody"). A Day At the Races has one of the smoothest beats, with a crunchy bassline and psychedelic guitar licks. All the verses are super smooth and it feels like a chill summer evening. Daddy Kane's feature doesn't disappoint. Lyrically speaking, braggadocious and punch-line-based verses are dominant here. This style never generally gets tiresome because of the aforementioned relaying style of the group. All members have immense talent for flow on these smooth beats. My favorite has to be Chali 2na who has a deep, booming voice that is the most memorable whenever he comes in. "Remember His Name" switches it up with Akil telling the story of an individual growing a rough life. In typical hip-hop storytelling fashion, the twist at the end implies he was talking about death itself giving his verse a different twisted meaning. I enjoy how they flip their established posse style of rapping in the phone call segment. The group tackles the subjects of their fame and sticking to their roots on the incredibly smooth and catchy "What's Golden", another favorite for me. The hooks generally work very well, I especially like Nelly on "Thin Line". Also, High Fidelity has a generally enjoyable hook. Ultimately though, the highlights of this album are when the guys are exchanging verses rapidly over these insanely stripped-back, bassy, and funk-laced beats. I feel the album is a tad too long but I don't consider that much of a downside since it's generally enjoyable when the group is doing their thing. But near the end, it gets mildly repetitive (aside from the interesting instrumental closer). Still, a very enjoyable, laid-back posse hip-hop LP that harkens back to the origins of the genre and stands out in its era. If you love posse cuts, you'll enjoy most of what's offered here. 8/10

Really great production on every track. "Freedom" and "If You Only Knew" are really good. "What's Golden" may be the most popular, as I'm pretty sure I e heard this song before. Some of the verses are kinda basic, like on "High Fidelity," where the lyrics don't stand out very much. But there are songs like "One of Them" with a more explicit point or theme. Still, great composition on pretty much every song.

Really really liked this. This 1001 albums project is developing my love of flute hip hop, who knew. Their flow, the change-offs from vocalist to vocalist, the little interludes of samples, etc kept it varied but consistent. In fact, once it was done, it kept autoplaying Jurassic 5 and it took me about a half hour to realize, and I wasn't mad about it.

Some cool old school beats. Enjoyed it

I don't really like hip hop, but this album is alright. Of the hip hop I got so far, this is among the best. They should have made this 40 minutes and skipped the filler. Especially the last song. Favorite song: If you only knew.

Top tier experimental hip-hop album.

Enjoyed this album. I used to listen to a lot of hip-hop but haven't for a few years. Nice to get back into it a bit

Good beats, fun samples, easy to digest, upbeat, positive messaging. No. Title Length 1. "This Is" 0:53 7/10 2. "Freedom" 3:19 7/10 3. "If You Only Knew" 3:51 7/10 4. "Break" 3:16 8/10 5. "Thin Line" (featuring Nelly Furtado) 4:45 7/10 10. "After School Special" 2:41 7/10 11. "High Fidelity" 3:07 7/10 12. "Sum of Us" 3:28 7/10 13. "DDT" (featuring Kool Keith) 0:42 7/10 14. Yes, I take Keith Richard's rather dim view of much hip-hop. Get off my lawn. With that in mind, this is the hip-hop style I like: midtempo beats, chorus vocals, and most of all, jazzy hooks and samples. No shortage of melody in these tracks.

Fun stuff. I’ve heard some of their stuff before. I’ve always liked it, but never really listened much. Maybe I will now.

Nicht schlecht. Gefällt mir. Kann man sich mal wieder anhören.

I like it. It reminds me of some old-school 90s hip-hop.

I mustave owned this CD because boy of I didn't know every song on this album. Very concise, refreshing outlook, great beats and some signature voices

A style of hip hop that just isn't done anymore. Some great vocals, composition, and a few stand out tracks. Maybe ran a bit long and with some lyrics that don't quite hit at times, but overall a very fun listen.

really like it.

I remember buying this CD on its release. This is probably the best j5 album. Verbal Gunslinger is a great single as well. J5 always brings solid albums. Chali 2na’s voice is mesmerizing, and passing the mic around helps not make it too repetitive. 4 1/2 stars.

I surprisingly enjoyed this one. Rounded up to a 4 star

I can't help but enjoy everything that fits this mold. Just puts a smile on my face.

Good music

Grotendeels vrij nice, wil m wel vaker horen. What's golden is een banger

Chille beats, klonk erg nice allemaal. Wel typisch west-coast

Brings back those Adult Swim bump vibes

Previous Familiarity: Very High! J5 are one of my favorites, even if this album isn't necessarily their best representation. Jurassic Five did their part to keep traditional hip-hop alive in the age of crunk and bling. DJ's using sampled breakbeats with skilled turntable cuts, conscious rhymes, and pass-the-mic dynamics, they "brought it back to the concrete streets (original beats, with real live MC's)", just like the early days of hip hop. Their 3rd LP, "Power in Numbers", expanded their sound to incorporate a few sounds and styles beyond their basement house party vibes. A touch of pop ("Thin Line" w/Nelly Fertado), a bit of storytelling ("Remember His Name"), a splash of gangster hardcore ("One of Them"), and some Middle Eastern funk ("Acetate Prophets"). Not all of those styles work the way they hope, but it did show that they had a few other ideas up their sleeve. Still, J5 are in their wheelhouse for a good amount of the record, and some of those tracks are unstoppable. "React", "A Day at the Races", "What's Golden", and "High Fidelity" showcase what they do best, with "A Day at the Races" being a top-tier qualifier for greatest hip-hop track of all time. It's that good. When they stick to what they do best, it's great! When they stray, it's questionable. Overall, a solid contribution. Their previous album "Quality Control" would be a better pick for album that everyone should hear, but at least "Power in Numbers" is better than their next album, "Feedback", where they totally go off the rails into pop territory.

Eminently listenable. Good beats. Good rapping.

Груви как говорится. Бодрый очень альбом, приятные гладкие биты, чёткая читка. Твёрдая четверка имхо!

They do not make hip hop like they used to or I’m not being exposed to the right artists, but this album gives you exactly what any hip hop fan wants.

First time listening to the whole album. Great beats, interesting lyrics. In the same sound family as Mos Def. What's Golden - their most popular, most recognized song for good reason Thin Line - Good groove with a chorus that makes me want to sing along with her royal high ess Nelly Furtado

Very enjoyable

You know when something comes out and your then partner tells you you won't like that; I shouldn't have listened.

I had no idea what to expect here. Ragae? Rap? hip hoppy. It was pretty good!

Solid record. Good and important lyrics. Some of the bars can be a bit corny at times. The real strength of this record is the instrumentals. Really, really good samples.

Great gym music

Nice rasta with snips of voice comment sometimes.;

Quelques marqueurs situent l’époque, mais généralement passe pour contemporain

Solid rap album, great all the way through

“Powers in Numbers” is a timeless gem that seamlessly blends intricate lyricism with infectious beats, and this album really showcases Jurassic 5’s chemistry, vibrant energy, and clever wordplay. Really enjoyed listening cover to cover, and standouts include Freedom, A Day At the Races, Remember His Name, and What’s Golden

Very fun listen. The beats and samples are incredible. as someone who was only 2 years old when this came out and grew up on modern “mumble rap” I found myself enjoying this more than I thought I would.

Funky as hell. I really liked all the verses, smooth, varied with the tag team style going on. Some of the verses go hard, not a ton of them though. It's hard to compare it to what would be released just a couple years later without thinking that the album just misses that last level of intensity that keeps it from being a five.

Love the vibe and the rhymes.

What a surprise. I did not think I'd enjoy this as much as I did. What a great album and a great sound.

I really liked this one! I could see myself listening to it again for sure.

Cool 90s vibe. Kinda like tribe and doom. Big fan

Fun old school hip hop

This was a great album and I was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed it. The jazzier beats and uncommon instruments such as a flute on the song “if you only knew” are the highlights for me. Favorite track: Thin Line

Extremely solid but began to run into one another as the album went on.

Underground hip hop classic. Clean production. Don’t think a single song misses. Groovy.

I enjoyed it. Really liked what they did with all the sampling with vibes of Avalanches in there. Didn't know Cut Chemist was in J5 but now makes sense. A Day at the Races was my high point but quality was pretty consistently good throughout

Wow this is a fantastic hip hop album. Beats are slick, and the bars are TIGHT. Very melodic which I’m a huge fan of. Surprised I haven’t heard of them before. 4.0

I had never heard of this album before. I read up about it on Wikipedia and I was really excited about it. It sounded like something I would enjoy, and the members were very interesting people. Listening it, the beats are great, the vocals are smooth, and I love how the members all jive together. This was a really fun discovery, and I would definitely listen to it again.

it’s like tribe but it’s not tribe

about half way in and I'm enjoying this album. It's got a jazzy feel that I really enjoy in rap music. It does get a little samey through a full album which brings me to a common refrain for me regarding Rap albums...they're too long. At 56 minutes this one is not as egregious as others and it actually does vary the musical styles more than some other highly rated Rap classics which definitely helps in the listenability department but still I'd like it more if it were 10 minutes shorter. All in all one of the better rap albums on this list IMHO. 4 stars

Good stuff

Lovely stuff

My kind of hip-hop right here; using acoustic and realistic-sounding drum samples sets the entire sound palette for me. Fantastic rhythmic rhyming and flow - even when there's a plethora of words (which for artists like Eminem it's a big turnoff) it's all done so cleverly and rhythmically that you can't stop moving your head. Keeper. 8/10 4 stars.

Reminds me of DOOM

I am trying to be picky with my 5 star awards, but I think I might regret not giving one to J5 here. They just don't miss. Favorite track was day at the races

Very good, similar but different to other 90s/00s hip hop

It’s very good! Well produced and tight.

Solid album. I really enjoyed it, but can’t give it the full 5 for the unapologetic homophobia throughout “One of Them”

This album was really good. The group rap shit is very rarely not corny. This was not the case. These mfers went hard. Really enjoyed this album no lie.

Really nice hooks and melodies. I enjoyed it!

Fun, I still prefer the instruments and beats, overlays and subs over the actual rapping on most songs

Some serious bops

I prefer Quality Control but I love their sound!

very very very cool production incredibly solid and fun

12/1/23. Very chill and kicked back hip hop album. Loved the jazz influenced samples and lyrical content. Have heard of A Day at the Races numerous times, but glad I finally listened to the entire album!

Excellent!

This is the kind of hip hop I like!

Really good

Great stuff. Smooth flow.

Dope beats, smooth rhymes. Fun album

Really enjoyed this. Not what I was expecting. Good melodies. Standout track: One of Them

I confess I was unable to give this a close listen, but what I heard was cool. It's chill. Cool sampling. It's very old-school. Reminds me of A Tribe Called Quest. It's not the most adventurous or ambitious rap I've ever heard, which is what I normally gravitate toward, but it's good for a chill listen. Or as background party music.

Cool beats! Fun record.

Known Before: One song Standouts: 8. What's Golden 8.5

Seemed to get better as it went on, throwing in more curveballs.

A jem!

I liked it. Reminded me of old school funk rap where it had hints of black nationalism and just enough positive affirmations. Also helps the beats change through the album

Spiritual lyrical miracle individual.

The only artist on this collection I'd heard of before is Nelly Furtado so I had no idea what to expect. It's surprisingly understated given the cover art, I'm a fan! Nice and chill early 2000s rap. Like with The Hives, I think I've been so damn spoiled lately that some music that's very good in its own right is just being overshadowed at the moment.

A couple of really great songs, I love their flow. Nothing bad at all, all around jams.

New fan over here

Lyrical hip hop with jazz samples - some good stuff.

Just a funky chilled album, cut from the same cloth as the likes of Black Star, big beats and big vibes from the verbal herman munsters, the word enhancers.

I was a little surprised to see this one pop up, wasn’t sure J5 would get the love compared to many of their contemporaries. It still sounds good though.

I personally prefer "Quality Control" By Jurassic 5, but they are one of my favorite hip-hop groups. Chali 2na is one of my favorite rappers ever, and their first couple albums hold a strong place in my mind from the time of their release. This album isn't a perfect release for me, so I don't feel I can give it 5 stars, but I'd probably give it 4.5, if I could.

I'm kinda shocked I've never heard of them. This was a solid album from start to finish. I'm not running to add these songs to my playlists, but I really enjoyed listening to the album as a whole. I'll give it another listen for sure. Rating 4.4.

This album brings me back to college- they played on our campus when I was a freshman. No one cared, though. I'm surprised by how much I like this album! Nice beats and lyrics--I'll have to check out more of their music.

laid back of the beat hip hop ft the skillful sampling of its era

this is a fun listen without the usual gangstas, hoes, or bitches you might expect. Thank you!

it's better than 3s but weaker than some 4s. probably a 4 tho since it doesn't fit into my definition of a 3 but I will probably not relisten since it wasn't that crazy took me 2 days to finish because I got stuck on Thin Line and relistened to it like 20 times

I'm not very big on hiphop but this is right up my alley. I love Eminem, Fugees, De La Soul and some Dutch hip hop (opgezwolle, osdorp posse, huilende rappers) and this seems to nicely fit in there. Smooth rhymes, a positive attitude and atmosphere. Dig this. 4+ stars!

West coast hip-hop avec la vibe, la groove et la poésie.

Súper fun somewhat repetitive
