Reviews (page 5 of 12)

I used to listen often to this and Jurassic 5’s previous record. Both are pretty solid, and I’m glad this one cropped up today. I miss this kind of hip hop. 4/5

Great to hear Chali 2na in any context. Really enjoyable listen

I have never heard of Jurassic 5 and that is probably because I don’t listen to hip hop/ rap unless it’s part of this process. I saw it come up and thought oh it’s a rap album and it is 1 hour long. Oh dear god! Then it started and I was pleasantly surprised. It’s really good. A hip hop album for non hip hoppers maybe! Haha

loved Freedom! This album had such a nice identity, it was overall a great listen

'Power in Numbers' is filled with some funky, fresh tunes. This had me hip hopping all the way through the afternoon with some Blackalicious-esque great beats. "Acetate Prophets" would also be a solid track for the Ocean's crew during a heist. Top tracks: "Freedom," "A Day at the Races," "Break," "What's Golden"

--This is... --Freedom...like that beat. very promising intro --If You Only Knew...I'm a sucker for flutes in hip-hop --Break...more minimalist. heavy on the drums/bass with a small dose of guitar. The star here is the rapping and it's great --React...interlude. Deltron 3030 vibes --A Day at the Races...this is sexy af --Remember His Name...it's good but feels like a step below earlier tracks --What's Golden...see previous comment --Thin Line...I love Minnie Riperton's 'Les Fleurs' so I'm required by law to love this --After School Special...another decent but lesser track --High Fidelity...not lesser! great beat, great samples, great lyrical flow --Sum of Us...another stripped down track. just talented artists rapping over a straightforward guitar/bass/drum beat. it's great --DDT-- I was excited for Kool Keith but it's just a forty second poem. I'll take what I can get --One of Them...damn, I wish Kool Keith did this track --Hey...it's not bad, but it feels like a track from a completely different LP. This album feels a little too long already so I would have suggested saving this for a single or mixtape --I Am Somebody...we course correct and it's oh so smooth --Acetate Prophets...I hate to whine about the length again but if your album is already 50 minutes why would you tack on a six and one half minute sound collage? whatever. at least it's better than Revolution 9

Muito bom

Not listened to Jurassic 5 in a longtime and tbh could only remember concrete schoolyard. This was a lot of fun, will be going back

Not a single bad track. Cant believe I’ve never heard of them before, absolutely loved it.

Geinig rap-schijfje.

Loved this album, heard of then multiple times. I'll definitely listen again. Another dad rap album I enjoy.

I wanted to like this a lot more since I hadn't gotten a hip hop album in over a month but this didn't really blow me away all that much. That being said I still enjoyed this album thoroughly and could see myself coming back and possibly liking it more. The more hip hop on this list the better I feel. Favorite track: Hey 3.5/5

Great indie, lo-fi, west-coast hip-hop…nice and chill, perfect for smoking weed and driving around with palm trees in the horizon. Idk which member is which but i like the guy with the deep voice, kind of reminds me of Scarface. Probably giving this a higher rating than I would have if the last two weeks hadn’t been albums of out of tune noise, but I like it and thought it was easy to vibe and listen to. Why is only the edited version on Apple Music? That’s annoying.

Loved it. Old school hip-hop beats. Some songs are like an assault on the ears in a good way!!

Silky smooth flows and great production quality. I had heard a lot of these guys on other people's albums, but never listened to Jurassic 5 back in the day. I'm thinking I missed out...

I don't love hip hop, but I do like J5...my head bobs to the best tracks. It does go on a little but there are enough highlights to make me come back. Love the lyrical nature of the rapping, it's more melodic and rhythmical than other rap artists. 4/5

Not really a genre I usually enjoy, but there’s a musicality that reminds me of 80’s stuff, variation in song structures and lyrics that aren’t misogynistic, narcissistic bullshit. Great album! 4/5

Never heard of this group before. Fun mid era hip hop! Favorite Songs: What's Golden and Thin Line

A great album. I wasn't expecting it at all

Two squared

five is (not quite) the magic number

I may be too late to this album. I enjoyed it, but not too much. Worth another visit some other time.

First rap album I've listened through . Nice hangs together. Definitely an album rather than a collection of songs with variety and something to say. Some great bass. Won't persuade me of the genre or indeed urban culture but not bad. Be an interesting benchmark for future rap .

This is how I want hip-hop to make me feel!!

I am not at all into hip hop, but I find myself nicely surprised by the relaxed attitude and the funky vibe of this piece. Unlike other hip hop collectives, Jurassic 5 don´t pointlessly shout at each other or the crowd but create a comprehensive and harmonic whole from their very different voices. In some tracks, guests add even more color - just check out "Thin Line" with Nelly Furtado. Ever thought about creating a series "Rappers that don´t suck"? This would make a good starting point! Still hip hop but far ahead of any other I heard so far.

what fun instrumentals but also this reminds me of outkast with a less iconic sound

un clasico, cuando empece a explorar el rap

Wow! I really enjoyed this one! Had never heard them before. I’m a new fan. Rap with some really smooth grooves. Nice.

Fun hip hop with catchy hooks. I enjoy the delivery of the main vocalists. Lyrical content is good, not super trite the way a lot of rap/hip hop of the era was directed. Notable tracks are Freedom, If Only You Knew, Break, A Day At The Races, What’s Golden, Thin Line, High Fidelity, Sum of Us, Hey.

A pretty dope one! Definitely gives a lot of the '90s sound of hip-hop a la A Tribe Called Quest or De La Soul, but more modern production. Flows are great and easy to bop to and lyrics aren't necessarily groundbreaking but good enough to keep the whole thing interesting. 8/10

High energy. Felt like it was the verge of something new.

actually really love this. A nice earnestness, feels like the fun hip-hop albums from before 9/11

The samples they had were absolutely insane and I was head bobbing the whole time. That being said tho, there were definitely some mid songs that I could have left behind but their lyrics, rhythm, and meaning behind their songs were very impactful. I probably would have appreciated the album more if I was black but it was still a good listen nonetheless. I will be listening to them more. Fav Track: A Day at the Races Least Fav: DDT

This was really good. The flows are great, the beats hold up, the features all pull their weight. Favorite songs were Freedom, A Day At The Races, What’s Golden, and Thin Line.

Crazy amount of nostalgia relistening to this. This album was on heavy rotation for me and my friends in High School, great to revisit and one that I have loved for a long time. 4/5

Always got time for Jurassic 5, great breaks, great lyrics.

Really enjoyed this. Such interesting production and lyricism. Nelly furtado feature was a treat. Exactly the kind of album I started this list for

I really dug this one. Kinda reminiscent of The Avalanches' 'Since I Left You' in parts. Favorite tracks: A Day at the Races, Thin Line, Acetate Prophets.

Really good album, never heard of this group before

I hadn’t listened to J5 before this but I enjoyed this album a lot. Works well as both background music and close listening.

J5, Kane, PE samples.

They take four emcees and make 'em sound like one! Chali 2na, one of the best voices in hip-hop. Always love J5.

I listened to this several times through, enjoyed it and rounded up to 4 stars. I am an easy mark for this one because I like Digable Planets and Tribe Called Quest which they seem to have modeled their sound on. My main criticism is that they haven’t really pushed anywhere beyond their influences, but it’s a fun listen nonetheless. Incidentally, before listening to this, I kind of thought this was a jam band which is pretty funny. I had heard the name before but never listened to them…probably because I thought it was a jam band. :)

4/5 - I needed to hear this because discovering a hip-hop album with a positive message and great samples was a helluva good time. Day at the Races was the standout for me, but I had fun listening the whole way through, even if it got a bit long at the end.

kind of like gorillas

i actually don’t mind this kind of hip-hop ça sonne vraiment années 2000

Jurassic 5, Album #6: never heard of this before and enjoyed way more than I expected, this thing SLAAAAPS. 10/10 would listen before I die.

Album #100! I really liked this one. Have to give it ☆☆☆☆ for its wordplay, accessibility, and overall good vibes. A little jazzy, a little funky, deft use of samples -- pure enjoyment. As promised, they gave me something I ain't used to. Great production, solid conscious raps

never heard of these guys. If the album was 2/3 as long I would rate this really highly but it did drag on a bit. Still really cool

I liked this. I had only heard "a day at the races" before.

Good vibes and fun

I feel like I know these songs without knowing these songs, and that's probably because of how influential they were.

Sounds fresh and enjoyable all these years on. It all sounds effortless, I’m not sure if this is my favourite J5 album but it’s certainly very good. It could be a few tracks shorter for my money but minor quibble as the quality never drops really.

Good album. Like most of the songs.

thank you tony hawk we love you

i've never heard of them before but when i pulled them up on spotify i was super excited cause i like underground rap/hip hop and ofc i liked a lot of songs here especially golden but some droned on i'm sorry 😭😭😭😭 tbh i think it started off kinda slow then picked up and then nelly furtado was a fun surprise feature!!!!!!! this should be 3.5 tho

A solid early 2000's hip hop album. You can hear a ton of influences on this: reggae, funk and jazz. Seemed to me like a very analog recording process, you can hear the studio drums, bass and instrumentation. More loose than a lot of other rap from that era which I liked.

Classic! Lot of good tracks I had forgotten, will listen again.

Very solid album, threw me back to playing Tony Hawk games.

My second-favorite J5 album after Quality Control. Great rhythms and dynamic between the various members.

Good majic well done

You know, it was good. I get why people don't like them much, but heck, I do

Super awesome! My swim coach recommended me them a while ago and I’m gladly I finally listened. Love this kind of rap can listen all day long. 4.5

I’m kind of mad at myself for not giving this enough attention, but I’m trying very hard to catch up here. It felt like it was awesome so I’ll give it a benefit of doubt 4 lol.

Damn, this album slaps. Adding to my library!

its fine

I love these guys' flow and lyricism, everyone in the group is operating on the same wavelength and it really shows in this album. Nothing but great lyricism and flow from the rappers, and great mood and beat from the producers. I'm with the majority here that's never heard of this album and wish they did sooner.

Listening to this album was a lot of fun.

I enjoyed this album! Interesting beats and samples, I particularly liked the one of “Les Fleurs” in Thin Line.

Nostalgic feels like i'm 15 again

Not my usual cup of tea, but a fun album despite that. I liked the inclusion of ambient noise and speech.

First time listening to this album and I loved it!

en veldig typisk 90-00s rap sound. Sykt bra flow på gjengen. kule beats.

They’re not all hits but what’s good is great. FS: What’s Golden & Thin Line.

Great flow and some interesting lyrics! Great motivation music. Except One of them, that blows.

Very good Fave song: A Day At The Races

This album rocks (if I can say that about a hip hop album?). Love the variety of music styles and voices. Intelligent lyrics. Not my favourite genre but will come back to this one.

Intgeresting - flute, jazz and rap. Positive. A day at the races. Sum of us I am somebody 7.8

It turns out I am woefully unaware of the upper ceiling of quality of hip-hop. I associate hip-hop with the sampling of good tunes, then rapping over them. I don't hate it, but often only really enjoy it because the song they chose to sample is a banger in the first place. This album disabused me of that notion. The songs here felt fully complete, crafted with more taste and scope than my previous notion of hip-hop would have expected. I google this album to find that it's not even that talked about among the fans of hip-hop? Either the mainstream audience prefers the rap-over-a-banger style, or the genre is hiding a repertoire of masterpieces that I will surely have to investigate.

Perfect summer album

Never listened to a full Jurassic 5 album. Didn't disappoint.

Smooth and chilled. Great samples. Thinking a 5

beats brabas d+ tá doido pqp

só beatzão CABULOSO as letras tbm são boas e tem um mano que tem um vozerão fortaço hein. pedrada demais!

Some nice old skool. Doesn't blow me away, but solid and listenable. 3.5? They seem like nice boys, let's give 4 stars to the 5.

Another gem from the list. Haven’t listened to the album before, enjoyed it a lot. Favorite track: if you only knew other picks: break, a day at the races, thin line, hey

I liked it very interesting and cool

I gave this a couple of listens - I dig it. There weren't many individual songs that clearly stood out to me, but the flow of the whole album is impeccable. Good vibes. I added Thin Line to my playlist because of the Minnie Riperton sample; I adore that song. But I almost added instrumental closer, Acetate Prophets, instead. I love the way all the different genres of world music are incorporated. So cool. I could listen to a whole album of that.

Super cool album by Jurassic 5 with solid beats, catchy refrains and lyrics that demand active listening from the audience. Verging on 5/5 here.

Really cool album. I enjoyed it overall.

Alternative hip hop is so much fun.

I rarely listen to rap or hip hop but I really enjoyed listening to this one as I got about my morning.

Loved the beats!!

Really good, maybe a little long

Surprisingly good.

87% Best: Freedom; Break; A Day At The Races; High Fidelity; Sum Of Us; I Am Somebody Must-Hear? Sure

I mean, it has What’s Golden on it and that’s one of the best hip hop songs of all time. The rest is great too, J5 are always good.

Good hip hop.

great record. I can see myself getting this

Funky and enjoyable. Definitely reminds me of Tribe and would listen again - I listened twice this time around. "What's Golden" slaps.

A goodie.

again, not a big rap guy, but these songs are filled with a lot of powerful commentary that comments so much more than the standard drivel from the genre, really good

Powerful, great production and writing

Beats großteils recht simpel aber alle gut bis geil. Refrains sind meistens catchy und spaßig. Rap ist crazy gut, manche lines fallen flach aber flow und lyrics top. 4/5

First time listen. Loved it.

Bangin

Fun vintage hip hop

Very good. Maybe not too much change in tempo or style throughout but a nice listen with some good songs

sounds like Blackalicious

It's not something I would usually listen to. But maybe today is unusual.

Hi Energy and a boppy beat. Honestly really enjoyed this album. Before this I'd never have heard of Jurassic 5

Really enjoyed this on my second listen through, when I focused more attention to it.

Goin back to the days of yes yallin

Never heard of the group but I am pretty sure I have heard these guys individually. Solid flow and great instrumentals. 8/10

J5 worships at the church of boom nap and hop hop's golden age. This was a big deal in the era of Diddy and flash. What's Golden is the thesis statement of this album. I loved it when it came out, I love it now, even though it wasn't doing anything new. It's still a refreshing, comfortable listen.

Great album that made me want to learn about this group.

I love J5 and have loved this album for a while

This was really cool. Super great flow and good lyrical content

I've never been a hip hop or rap fan but I think its because I was listening to what Jurassic 5 would call "One of Them". Given this came out in 2002 at the height of the really terrible rap moment in pop music, I can't believe this wasn't top of the charts. I honestly think this era was the worst for the top 40 in Billboard history- very few of those songs hold up. This record is fantastic. The lyrics are clever, the flows are great, the rap harmony is a really cool element, Chali 2na's baritone voice is just awesome. Definitely will revisit and listen to more Jurassic 5. Liked everything I heard, some of it I loved. 4.5, I round down. 1=Crap that shouldn't be here 2=I didn't like it but get why it's here 3=I thought it was ok or even like it, get why it's here, but won't revisit 4=I like it, will revisit 5=This is some of the best music I've ever heard and will continue listening to it

Awesome early 2000s hip-hop. I heard of these guys but never dove in. My mistake. I’ll be back

Power In Numbers is a solid entry in the world of alternative hip hop. Jurassic 5 brings smart lyrics, tight production, and a real appreciation for the old-school vibe without sounding stuck in the past. Tracks like “If You Only Knew,” “One of Them,” and “High Fidelity” stood out the most — catchy, clever, and delivered with confidence. The group’s chemistry shines through, and the beats are clean but still pack a punch. Favorite song: One Of Them

Brilliant drumming on this record.

J5 feels like a big inspiration for Sweatshop Union. Big fan of this style of hip hop and love Chali 2na's baritone.

Nice funky beats and great flow, very catchy. Pretty good overall

deltron vibes top tracks - Freedom - A day at the races -High fidelity

old school hip hop style. some cool samples in here, love the drums boys got bars fav tracks: freedom what's golden thin line high fidelity sum of us least fav: one of them

Love the title and artwork Freedom is an absolute banger Great funky instrumentation that is varied throughout Really strong opening few tracks Continues to be banging pretty much all the way through. Great album Awesome Production Re-listened a bunch so must be good Thin Line Is Great

Hadn’t heard before, good

Great, easy listening hip hop. Spin this after midnight for full effect. 4/5

Smooth, and funky. Great listen.

This is a great album. I can't think of anything bad to say about it. J5 it's fantastic, and Quality Control is probably just as good as this album.

Liked this way more than I thought I would. Compelling beats and solid lyrics.

Not in my typical wheelhouse, but really enjoyable and creative. Good use of tracks and samples

A fun little trip through hip hop. To be enjoyed in moderation.

Production on this is crazy good, doesn't really feel dated at all. Runs out of steam a little bit near the end but there's 7-8 certified bangers in this.

3.5. Feels older than 23 years old, lotta boom bap "hey hey hey hear what I say" type stuff. Doesn't suck like most hip hop now though so it's got that.

Unlike many of its contemporaries, I really like the vocals here, even if they would probably be better with a singable/memorable melody. The rappers here have a fun, enthusiastic, and (importantly) non-generic quality to them. Rather than being edgy and deliberately ignorant of musical norms, Jurassic 5 embraces a lot of elements of rock, blues, and soul in its instrumental to complement the vocals pretty darn well. The lyric writing is impressive too. Often, with hip-hop, I find myself cringing into my chair for at least a few lines per album - but not on Powers In Numbers. Very little, if any, focus on violence, drugs, misogyny, or the age-old "fuck da police". It's refreshing. Reminds me a bit of De La Soul. The first proper track, Freedom, is great, especially if you ignore the melody-lacking vocals. A warm bluesy feel. The piano-flute combo in If You Only Knew is peppy and uplifting. It's hard to pin down a style - maybe some kind of very odd cafe jazz? Add to that the breaks and record scratches characteristic of the 80s and early 90s, and you have a snapshot of an iconic era. Thin Line's subtle chords and harmony-thick chorus also make for a strong track. A lot of the songs on here have some great bass parts. Could be a keyboard, but it's hard to tell since the personnel (for instruments) isn't listed anywhere on Wikipedia. Power In Numbers approaches 5 stars but doesn't quite get there. The album is a bit long, and there are definitely some musically weaker tracks wedged between the stronger ones. Remember His Name, with its one-note background synth and lack of chorus or vocal hook, is a strong contender for shaving off the record. This Is and DDT, as interludes with no musical contribution, are obvious picks too. One Of Them startled me a bit, since its lyrics are blatantly homophobic. Unexpected, maybe, considering how strong some of the earlier lyrics are. It's easily the worst track here. 4/5 Key tracks: Freedom, If You Only Knew, Break

Front to back a masterclass in rhyming, flow, story telling, and beat making. The style is definitely old school but with such talent on both the mic and the decks their is a timelessness to many of the songs. 4.5

So I actually really liked this album! I liked the beats!

Mucho flow

Amazingly, I kinda loved this! 4 star plus maybe deep dive

Thoughts before listening: Its always interesting to see the early 2000s albums that made this list. For most of this list the authors had the benefit of time to understand what albums are true classics and been influential on later generations. However for more modern selections they had to do a lot of guessing. I remember enjoying Jurassic 5 in 2002, but I have barely thought of them since. I highly doubt anyone would argue that this is one of the great hip hop albums of all time, and in fact, Allmusic ranks it 3rd out of J5's 4 albums. Yet here it is on a list of 1,001 essential albums. Review: So maybe its not a classic, but that doesn't mean its not good. This is definitely an enjoyable album of positive hip hop with a laid back vibe played over jazzy beats and DJ scratching. Lots of interplay between the members of the group which is a cool sound borrowed from legends like the Beastie Boys and Wu Tang. This is the type of hip hop that killed at the music festivals I was going to back in the day i.e. Bonnaroo which they played 2x. I like this quite a bit actually. 4-stars

Fun album with lots of personality. 4.

7.5/10 This was very good - on-point samples, excellent production, nice rapping (especially the harmonising). Not quite enough consistent 5 star material to get it full marks, this is one where subtraction might be addition if they choose out 10-15 minutes. Not sure why this is in ahead of J5 (if it is). Best: I am Somebody

Brilliant album, great energy and performances.

Solid. Appreciate the different rap styles within the group. Not exactly sure what differentiates Power In Numbers from any of J5's other albums for inclusion on the list but it's as good as any of them so why not? Genre Impact: Low Decade Impact: Low Absolute Impact: Low Listenability: High Re-listenability: Very High

Very solid album, especially the first half. I haven't heard of this group previously, but glad I've heard them now.

Wonderfully musical album. Very colourful and melodic. We need more of this music today. 4 stars because I loved about 3/4th of the songs, and the others, while good, weren’t something I’d relisten to. But would recommend the album as a whole to everyone!

I know this music wasnt made for me, but i still really like it.

it was 2002, and there was no real room for overly conscious hip-hop after the South took over the genre like Napoleon to France. sure, it wasn't extinct, but boom bap and jazzy cyphers were going underground for the decade, replaced by ringtones, high-pitched soul, or abstraction. someone forgot to give Jurassic 5 the memo or they threw it directly in the trash, and i am glad they did. Power In Numbers feels so earnestly out of step with the trends of the time, almost defiant. part of it is definitely Cut Chemist and DJ Nu-Mark's production and beats, but the best part of his cuts are how his compositions make space for the crew to work over, trading off and calling back and forth for hooks. i'd definitely like to shout out 2na's vocals; he's got such a unique voice, something you could rap the phonebook with. of course, almost everyone else has their own personality, tight and honed. i'm not sure if Quality Control is worse than this (i haven't heard it yet), but i don't see it being better. there are cuts like the phony-call out track "One of Them" that keep this from being a perfect listen -- the homophobic slight honestly feels less offensive than the cornball gangsta shaming. otherwise, this feels like Jurassic 5 working at peak performance, like a day in the sun.

Silky beats, well balanced between all the rappers, cool samples. Good album

This was surprisingly enjoyable despite me generally not being into Hip Hop at all. Definitely worth keeping this one in mind.

Nuria: 4 Jaime: 5 ( maravilloso disco)

Would be a solid 5 if the stopped at 12 tracks but it kind of wanders after that and I get a little tired.

Really like What's Golden and High Fidelity. What a nice surprise! I had never heard of this band but it was a perfect listen on a sunny breezy spring day. I can see myself returning to it, especially in times when I need to relax.

Really nice oldschool rap album. One of the cases I'd prefer a 10 star rating scale to have a better differentiation in contrast to other albums. 8/10

Jurassic 5 is the classic answer to the terrible state of most commercial rap by the late 1990s/early 2000s, the so-called bling or jiggy era. These guys were underground, true to hiphop roots, and talented. I'm pretty familiar with Quality Control, but had never heard this album before--a definite oversight. Highlights for me on this first listen were I Am Someboy, and A Day at the Races--awesome to hear Percee P and Kane. Every rapper on that track goes hard, but man, Percee's flow and rhyme schemes... wicked posse cut. Thin Line is the one track I think I've heard before, and a great beat. Chali 2na is on point rapping throughout with his distinctive delivery and baritone voice and some tracks showcase the wordplay of the other MCs. Full props for dropping the hilarious Kool Keith freestyle in the middle. Anyway, there are definitely some filler tracks that could have been left off this album, but it's mostly pretty good all around. I'm not a huge J5 fan but always respected them. Rounds up to a 4 probably. 3.7 or 3.8 in reality.

Should have checked these guys out way sooner, dope as hell

Fantastic group with great beats. Solid album

Vinyl: No Fav Song: Freedom Notes: There is some downtime on it but nostalgia clicks this over to a 4 for me. Chali 2na is great

Thoroughly enjoyed this one. Lots of good tracks on here. This music isn't normally my style, and it's damn nice to enjoy one like this.

Funky.

pretty fun to listen to, sick beats sick flow, boppin

A very cool amalgam of styles over chill grooves, jazzy elements, and samples.

First Listen - Don't know/recognise any songs Just feels like a bunch of friends shooting the shit. Drum beat in 'Break' is iconic - didn't realise how old it is. Feels like the inspiration for Terror Reid's style of rap and how he makes his flows. wtf the end of 'One Of Them' with the perfect records bit is so well done. That'd actually make me flip out if I heard it. Will have to look into more of their music

Xulo. Una mica repetitiu

Had a lot of fun with this one, glad I could be introduced to this group. Favorite Songs: Thin Line / High Fidelity / One of Them

I'd been vaguely aware of Jurassic 5, but I had not made the leap. Upon stepping off the edge, I can't say I was disappointed. Creative, yet simplistic beats, paired with skilled rhymes. It's not particularly revolutionary, at least not as much as it's cover seems to display. But as someone who loves hip-hop, their love for the genre is apparent. Unfortunately, Jurassic 5 are great artists who didn't make a great work this time around. Nonetheless, they got a couple tracks in the playlist. Considering higher rated albums didn't get such distinction, I think this may be a higher compliment than a number. 7.5/10 Favorite Song: One of Them

What's Golden is an all-timer, and the bars and beats on the rest of this are good fun

Favorite Track: Day at the Races

Preetty cool

Solid band, definitely like a lot of the beats. Ran a bit too long for my taste, but I can see the appeal, I’m thinking 4 to 5. I like stuff with a little bit more melody to it if that’s the right word? But this one’s pretty solid. Listening to it one more time in the car made it grow on me a bit, I’ll leave it at four stars because it’s a bit too long for me.

The classic beats, the flow, the ability of each member to blend their styles into each song; this album was one of my favorites back in the day.

This was so fun to listen to. Great, positive energy.

Хороший альбом

Feel-good gammeldags rap før mumble rap og andet gøgl.

Hip Hop classic

A great album with a fantastic vibe to it. I could throw this on when I'm doing anything and just vibe with it.

This Is - no rating Freedom - 3/5 If You Only Knew - 4/5 Break - 4/5 React - no rating A Day At The Races - 4/5 Remember His Name - 3/5 What's Golden - 4/5 Thin Line - 5/5 After School Special - 4/5 High Fidelity - 4/5 Sum Of Us - 4/5 DDT - no rating One Of Them - 3/5 Hey - 3/5 I Am Somebody - 4/5 Acetate Prophets - 2/5 Average score: 3.6/5 (rounding up) didn't think i'd like this very much (i'm iffy when it comes to hip-hop) but I was pleasantly surprised by this. the beats are nice and well-produced, with a funk-influenced sound that compliments their flow well. the momentum of the album starts to die in the last quarter, but not by much my personal standout track is Thin Line, but maybe i'm biased as a Nelly Furtado fan. i also liked If You Only Knew cuz i'm a sucker for flutes

Really awesome

Doesn’t sound like a coffee shop hiphop album. Magnificent flow. All I can think about is that chainsaw sound. BAM! Nelly Furtado in there. Epic

Love the production and use of bass, the lyrics are really fantastic. Original and new beats and just so fresh and good. Deep and fun and clever and enjoyable

Rap each halt ned so mis aber Guete vibe. This is, remember his name ond what's golden chammer sech merke

An all time classic. Hooked since nba street.

8.5/10 13/17-3

really enjoyed it, great album

Some really chilled out and hard songs, the breaks are great. Kinda feels like this album is in the wrong era, as I think it sounds like its from the early 90s or even late 80s with the public enemy influences. Therefore I think some of the tropes are a bit over used. Rapping is good, and it doesn't get boring because there's so many of them and they are all quite different. I feel like some of the beats are better than others, some are just kind like a sustained/looped noise with drums. Favourite songs: freedom, if you only knew, a day at the races, remember his name, what's golden, thin line, hey, I am somebody Overall around 8/10

Užasno zabavan i laid back album

Solid hip hop back bone with so many good flows

Straight up B-Boy shit.

I felt like I had heard of Jurassic 5 before but wasn’t sure where, but then when I went to put on the album I noticed I already had a song saved from this album (A day at the races) and I knew I’d be in for a treat. I really loved this album. The sampling and the beats are amazing. As with all my rap album reviews I really feel like you need more time to fully digest them, like with a catchy pop song, your brain is fully digesting it on the first listen cause it’s simple and catchy. However rap music takes more time to fully process. I don’t really have any major complaints, just needed more time for these songs to become iconic.

schallplatten vibes, og rap

Love it

See now this is what an old hip hop album should be. A lot of great samples, lyrics and flows thru out the whole album. The whole group performed rly well on this and I’m very surprised I have never heard of Jurassic 5 before even tho I’m quite familiar with Mos Def. The only problem I have with this album is that it has to be shorter it just wasn’t a type of project that needed to be an hour long but music wise it’s amazing tbh. Now I’m very on the fence if this is a 4 or 5 star with this being a 9.2/10 4.6/5

I feel like I am a better person for having listened to this. It's funky with some fun instrumental elements. I enjoyed the guitar and the fun beats. I like all their voices.

Power in numbers... more like, power in fuckin slick lyrics & flow, amirite? You can clearly tell this record is a product of late 90s/early 2000s hip-hop, but it also just has a timeless feeling to it.

Solid fyra.

Okay this was actually groovy as shit. Admittedly I've never heard of these guys, but they have their own charm. I can dig it ✌️

This project may (or may not) make a rap fan out of me yet. This is the fouth rap album I've put at four stars. (I don't have any above.) As for this album as I mentioned before I love the laid back groove of the music. It really carries me along the album. Some of the latter half didn't, but for the most part I really dug the over all feel (8.25) ★★★★ (could be a grower)

Poetic and rhythm and melody fueled. This was a really enjoyable album by a group I never heard of before from a style I often don’t care for.

Good album, enjoyed a lot about it.

Liked: If You Only Knew, A Day At The Races, What's Golden, Thin Line, High Fidelity, I Am Somebody

What absolute variety. This has so many moving parts. Bunch of rappers in the group to begin with and a decent crop of features too. Every beat is fire. Idk this is way better than expected

⭐⭐⭐⭐ It started of as a 3/5 cause it felt like good but backgroundish music to me. Ended up becoming a really funky 4/5 album.

Fun album. I already knew a few tracks but What’s Golden stays on my playlists. High Fidelity, A day at the Races and I am Somebody all hit too. I’m a big fan the of rap group style. Even just a duo hits hard but they’ve got 4 MCs and it works for me. Good beats, good lyrics, good vibes. It was a bit long but had me nodding along the whole time. Fun to listen to and had some depth.

Not groundbreaking but really solid and a really fun listen, some great flows and beats. What’s Golden is a classic to me!!

This is the best rap album from the early 2000s that I’ve ever heard, their style and wordplay was really refreshing.

Decent power level

This is a fantastic album. J5 is great but very under-appreciated. Laid back with great grooves, they are just great to listen to. A Day at the Races is a personal favorite. Break, What's Golden, and High Fidelity also stand out. Sit back, relax, and enjoy this one.

LOVE this rap album! Political and some songs justifiably angry, but without being obscene and disrespecting women. Art rap, not gangsta rap. Acknowledges history. Lyrics are smart and creative. Some songs have a cool 70s vibe. Harmonizing with a range of voices. And there’s a flute!

Really good album.

Enjoyed listening to this album all day. Old style "rap" (?) turns out to be something I really like!!

Classic, but hard to get over some of the corniness.

hold on to this feeling

Goes hard

really liked this!! it was really hard to choose a favorite too, every song was so good in its own way. I usually don't like when albums are an hour long but I didn't mind the length of this one.

Now this is my style

This was so good! Came out of nowhere and had never heard of it. Definitely going to the Spotify saved

i really enjoyed this album! I had never heard of this group before, and from my limited research they seem to be a bit less well known even in rap/hip hop circles, which is a shame because i was very impressed by them! I'm surprised that this is the only album from Jurassic 5 on the list (i checked), especially it's linked sonically with the previous album. i think it would be interesting to listen to both almost as a double album to see how they fit together. but overall some really nice chill cali beats, incredible rhymes and flow, great lyrics (for the most part), and really intelligent production and album sequencing. this is definitely an album that is meant to be listened to as a unit from start to finish, which i really appreciate. my only major complaint is that the end feels a little bloated at times to the point where if they cut one or two songs or even just a little bit off a few of the songs it would feel tighter imo- but overall this was a great introduction to this group and i am looking forward to checking out their other work as well.

Fun, high energy, rap DJ album.

Solid hip hop album, I enjoyed it

7/10 Bell'album di un collettivo hip hop che non conoscevo. Apprezzo molto i featuring e l'alchimia sui beat. A Day At The Races è una manata.

Quality Control (2000) is the better release, but this is still a strong record. The production is hard and addictive, the flows and rhymes are effortlessly intricate, especially on 'A Day at the Races,' the harmonized choruses are tasteful, and the partitioning of verses is uniquely lucid. But it also trots out cliché lines like 'My pen drips / As I scribble my thoughts on thin strips of emotion.' It sometimes feels like this album was made for people who never 'got' hip-hop, and needed a record that's blatantly 'conscious' to get over their disapproval of the gangsta genre. But anybody who really understands hip-hop knows there's no De La Soul w/o NWA, no Black Star w/o 8Ball and MJG. Still, this is a classic listen, partly b/c it's great pop, tho Q-tip would resist that dubbing: 'Rap is not pop / if you call that then stop.'

This seems like a good time to remind listeners that, unless you are a member of an historically oppressed minority, there are certain words you are not allowed to use. Those words represent that historical oppression, and have a different meaning only when used by the oppressed class. So no matter how much you may dig tracks like, “One of Them,” you are not allowed to sing along out loud. Just listen and appreciate. Thus ends today’s linguistics lesson.

The interesting, fun, inspiring songs outweigh the dull ones. 3.5

Dare I say my favorite hip hop album so far? Great sounds throughout, good lyrics, rapping, and sampling.

Jurassic 5 has long been a hip hop favorite of mine. Quality Control is probably one of my favorite hip hop albums, so I was excited to get this today. J5 features 4 rappers (and 2 DJs - which does not equal 5), all with unique voices that come together for choruses and harmonies. Chali 2na's deep flow is my favorite, but there isn't a weak voice in the group, and all deliver with incredibly creative writing and rhyming. With rap music generally way too caught up in objectification of women, violence, and drugs, the comparative positivity of Jurassic 5 is refreshing. They were not the only group cultivating their style and skill rather than trying to be edgy and hard - and they deserve acclaim alongside Tribe Called Quest, The Roots, De La Soul, and others. "Power in Numbers" is a throwback to the 80s with breaks, scratches, (lots of credit to DJ Nu-Mark and Cut Chemist for shaping that sound), but it still feels (or felt?) fresh. 4⭐️

Alternative hip-hop is usually my preferred brand of hip-hop, and this fits that bill well with some nice grooves, strong hooks and smooth, relatively SFW vocal interplay. It definitely feels like this was already well-trodden ground by the turn of the century though. Still, it marks a second appearance on the generator for Nelly Furtado! That's got to be worth a round-up from 3.5.

How have I not heard of this group before?! Great flow and the beats are very good.

Genuinely surprised by how much I enjoyed this album

80/100

Great album with very few misses

Effortless cool and groovy.

good record

Pretentious? Sure. Anything new? Nah…it’s called old school for a reason. But J5 has flow for miles. Hard to argue with this album landing on this list.

Thoughtful and funky hip hop, good sample work and interesting messages. Pretty good record

I really enjoyed this, actually. i think it’s worth another listen

Not the genre I usually listen to but I enjoyed it; laid back, upbeat vibes

Just a really fun listen

Humorously, I had Jurassic 5 and Maroon 5 conflated in my head. I was so happy to be wrong. This album is pretty damned cool. Hip hop I hadn't heard before. Dig Chali 2na's voice. Lots of awesome bars throughout. Old school stuff chopped up for the 2000's -- back to the days of boastin' and mixin'. Worth a listen for sure. Unexpected bangers: One of Them, Freedom, Hey

Sounds loser than 02

this was super good. didn’t fall into any of those 90s/2000s pitfalls that rappers seem to. hard to choose between 4 and 5 but since i only “like” on song on spotify we’ll go with 4. not a bad minute of listening though

Super fun album, great hooks and beats. Reminiscent of the types of raps I liked most from artists like Mos Def and Del the Funky Homosapien. I think as time passes, I seek less and less more 'cerebral' 5-dollar vocab word heavy hip hop, but this one was a blast.

very groovy, hip hoppy.

Good, but somehow I feel like it was a bit average.. may be an unpopular opinion

This is a great one. I listened to this a bunch when it was new. Not an all-time great in my book, but still really solid.

Keeper. Sing along. Upbeat. Old school. Hip hop. Beats

I knew the name of the band, but don't think I've ever listened to it before this. They were good!

Haven’t listened to them since like 2005 - forgot how good .

Sometimes I really miss the hip hop of earlier decades. Bars you can actually understand and more developed story telling compared to today's hits in the genre. This would be almost 5 stars for me (4.5) but have to settle for a 4. I really enjoyed it and wish sometimes today's tracks have a bit more developed lyrics too

Great album with chill tunes.

I've never heard of Jurassic 5, and I'm pretty sure I haven't heard any of the tracks from this album either; always a nice prospect (even if the promise doesn't always play out). I appreciate how they took a different approach to hip-hop than a lot of what we've gotten in this collection, with a lot of samples and bass and tight (and often incisive) lyrics; at times I'm mildly reminded of a more modern, beat-oriented De La Soul, or maybe even more so like the 2000s era iteration of the Jungle Brothers. I particularly enjoyed "Break", "A day at the races", "What's golden" (fun video too), "The sum of us", and "I am somebody", with an honorable mention to the Nelly-Furtado-assisted "Thin line". I also enjoyed the album overall, far more than I'd expected to from the opening few tracks. Kind of a bummer that the Wikipedia entry reads like it was written by ChatGPT 0.5--not simply uninformative but poorly structured and a limited vocabulary (and sadly, the Wikipedia entry for the group is about the same). The "1001 albums" entry is substantially better--and more informative--but still leaves out a lot of background and/or context. Too bad, as Jurassic 5 clearly had a lot to say in their relatively short-lived tenure.

I really like this album. Especially the instrumentals. Added whole album to library.

These guys mastered the back and forth of having multiple MCs working together quite well. As with many albums of the rap genre, this one has some fillers. It's still great.

Nice album a bit grandmaster but good content

Poetic confidence! Or confidence poetica!

Pretty fun and chill till "One of Them", but a great throwback to earlier days of hiphop.

Very strong 4. Not as good as J5 (which was a defining album of the late 90's for me) but still cracking - so smooth.

Premium hip-hop. Fantastic vibe 👌

I still remember seeing these guys live for a signing and in store performance when this album came out. It’s hard to believe that was over 20 years ago. What I’ve always liked about Jurassic 5 is how they trade off lyrics with group harmonies, adding a cool dynamic to their songs. The production is clean and balanced, mixing old school vibes with a modern touch. The DJ scratches and samples give it a nice retro feel, and the jazzy, funk-driven beats keep the music upbeat.

Never listened to Jurassic 5 before. Not too bad. I'm surprised this album came out in 2002, it has an early 90s rap sound that feels almost a decade older. Still, not a bad track on the album (the last track is a bit of just noise and mess, but by then you've already been through most of a good album). The intro and interludes feel kind of pointless, but they don't really drag it down. Enjoyed it. Best song: What's Golden

Creative, great messaging, solid music. This is a great album.

What is it with hip hop albums being around an hour? You haven't got that much material to record every single time, surely? I thought I wouldn't be able to name many particular tracks that stood out because, as is the case with this kind of music, to my ears it kind of blends into one, but I was surprised when I starting picking out certain tracks I enjoyed. 'I Am Somebody' was probably my favourite and has the best beat. 'Thin Line' featuring Nelly Furtado was up there as well. 'High Fidelity' had a cool beat with what I believe is a flute. It works really well. I will say that I enjoyed this more than I thought and more than other hip hop albums I've had so far. It's a lot more of a laid back vibe than gangsta rap, the beats are more enjoyable and catchier. It's funkier and just has an overall cooler sound. The actual rappers are very good. There's one with a really deep voice who was my favourite, I think it was Chali 2na. They are very tight as well. They stay well within the beat of the track, rarely straying outside of it if that makes sense. Thankfully there's very few skits and it's a cool album cover too. I'm feeling really generous and on the basis that I actually think I'd enjoy this even more if I followed along with the lyrics and properly absorbed them, I'm unbelievably going to give this a 4. Well done Jurassic 5, you're now currently my favourite hip hop artist!

Pre-listening thoughts: I hope they rap about dinosaurs :3 Post/during listening thoughts: guys I think I love (a lot of) hip hop actually. I realize hip hop is a broaddd genre but so many of the hip hop albums I’ve listened to from this challenge I have enjoyed more than expected. I need to do some exploration of my own there. My biggest qualm with most of them is they are too long. But whatever. The use of flute on this album makes me feel nostalgic for early 2000s Sesame Street in a way I won’t and can’t explain further. NELLY FURTADO FEATURE OMG!!! Love this yayayay! 8/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: nah but im glad I did Fav tracks: Freedom, If You Only Knew, What’s Golden, Thin Line, High Fidelity, I Am Somebody Least fav tracks: Acetate Prophets

Classic 90s/early 00s rap

Love Jurassic 5. Love this album. Soooooooo great! Love love love ❤️❤️❤️

"If you only knew" was amazing. Despite not being my typical taste, I found myself really enjoying this one.

Jurassic 5 came into my hemisphere in the late 90's with their first EP. It was full of quirky samples and songs, but nothing really cohesive. Power In Numbers is when they put it all together and delivered a great album. Again, loaded with samples and old school rap references, but now with a more powerful message. Great stuff here, don't miss out. 4/5

Didnt think I would enjoy a hip hop album this much. Drags on a bit towards the end only reason it’s not a 5.

This was nice surprise, a good jam. I rolled this on an hour road time and it was great. I particularly liked “If you only knew, remember his name, and High Fidelity”. The rest flowed really well and was overall a great chill listen. 4.5/5

This was a really nice surprise and provided a good backdrop to an otherwise dreary day. The simplicity throughout is great with not a lot of filler. The beats, clever sampling and lyrics really get a chance to standout as a result. Dig it.

Solid beats and rhymes.

More excellent old school Hip Hop with understandable rapping.

понравился, добавила пару треков с свой плейлист

No album released in 2002 has any right to be this funny. Corny at times yes but some rhymes were so corny you just had to laugh

East coast hip hop gets an automatic 4 at least. A great Monday morning treat. Listened to some J5 when I was younger, but hadn’t heard this album. Some standouts and I like the outro.

Meticulous rapping and production. Walks right up to the line of being corny… and crosses it sometimes. Overall a lot of fun

Really nice beats and some very clever rhymes and lyrics Pleasant suprise

I'm not that into hip-hop, but if I were it would be this.

Wasn't expecting to be blown away by this one! Wasn't expecting to have listened to them already, either! Their song "A Day At The Races" was on the soundtrack to Tony Hawk's Underground. "Remember His Name" and "Thin Line" stood out to me on this album. I love Chali 2na's voice!

Power In Numbers is pretty good and one of the stronger hip hop albums we've had, it takes a little while to get going but there's some really strong balance between all of the vocals and how they're shared around, the beats are very cool, relaxed and with a slightly inquisitive/occasionally confused lilt but that works really well with the lyrical ambition and flow, it's not a simple album falling back on cliches and tropes and denigration. Main criticism is that it's a bit samey and lacks some of the grit I want from the genre but still gets a 4 I think. A Day At The Races my favourite track.

90s hip hop continues to surprise me. This was a great album.

I love this album so much, but the last two song is little bit experimental and not fit to the whole album to me

Pretty good

This is so cool, and not just because it makes me think of THPS. Clean and clear production, great vocal trade offs. Good stuff.

I really enjoy this fusion-heavy style of Hip Hop, especially how it blends multiple genres. The group showcases a nice diversity in vocal styles and ranges, but for me, Chali 2na is the standout. His deep bass vocals, combined with his sharp delivery and distinct cadence, make his contributions truly unique.

A hip hop/rap record that wasn’t Yet Another or a bore or filled with unfunny skits! Great sampling and fills, raps that had great flow and cadence. Interesting and fun record.

I loved the sounds and grooves of this album. For never hearing of this album/group...it was a nice find from this app.
