Reviews (page 6 of 12)
Very "The Beatles meets early 2000s indie/alt" and I enjoyed every second of it.
Fun! definite 4. I liked that i personally didn't listen to a lot of wilco growing up, so it was really fun to discover.
Chill interesting alt rock Would buy vinyl
Not a huge Wilco fan, but I do like this album.
Nice
Wow, a personal favourite. Peak wilco. Joyous stuff. American with a bit of a ambient art rock edge. All signed off with Jeff Tweedys vulnerable vocals. Its a beautiful thing. 4 5
Kinda digging this. Never really listened to Wilco, but I'm a fan. Will listen to this one again as well as other albums, fo sho.
Enjoyable. An interesting mix of genres. Wouldn't rush to put it in my favourites but would listen again.
Love it, got it on Vinyl and errything
!!! loved this. didnt feel too attached to it but musically it was comforting and you could feel the bittersweetness in his voice
solid
not bad at all!
Quite liked all the songs (although they were a bit melancholical) except "I'm the man who loves you".
Beautiful, miserable and light
Wilco's "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" is an unassuming jewel in the crown of early 2000's indie rock. It's gathered such a reputation in the years since release that I was excited to finally get around to it. For the most part, I was not disappointed. For 51 minutes, Jeff Tweedy's taut and trembling vocals croak out personal, abstract observations, accompanied by chugging acoustic guitars in almost every song, tied up with some surprising production choices. It's well and truly in my wheelhouse. Tweedy's modus operandi is to craft a set of simple folk songs and then adorn them with electronic flourishes, long and low feedback, filtered drum machines, and what can only be described as an orgy in a junkyard. Take the opener, "I Am Trying To Break Your Heart". It's an instantly memorable and simple melody that could have stood up on its own, but with the treatment it receives here, it becomes a beguiling mess. Always one step ahead of its listener, it spends its five minutes on the verge of total collapse: hammered piano chords and strummed guitars drop in and out of focus, amid shards of chimes, fragments of drum fills, snatches of glissandos on indeterminate instruments. It's all topped with Tweedy's fragile, weary vocal: an absolute triumph of an opening. The other arrangements here are gorgeous, too. In particular, "War on War" through to "Heavy Metal Drummer" is an absolute gold streak, and showcases the album at its most accessible. It's perfectly paced, from the tender strings of "Jesus, Etc." to the vast desolation of "Ashes of American Flags" to the peppy nostalgia of "Heavy Metal Drummer". Giving the material the edge is the sonic experimentation. Through liberal employment of feedback, "Ashes of American Flags" is elevated to a cavernous, desolate apocalypse, while the disintegration into a hurricane with the radio broadcasts of "Yankee... Hotel... Foxtrot" is absolutely haunting and genuinely unsettling. The other tracks are still solid, but I cared for them a little less. For me, "Radio Cure" doesn't probe the same emotional depths as the other ballads and never settles on a distinctive melody. "I'm the Man Who Loves You" feels too derivative of Beck's "Odelay" with its devil-may-care, pastiche approach to alt-country. "Pot Kettle Black" and "Kamera" are much needed light relief, but not indispensable. And then we get to "Yankee..."'s closing number, "Reservations", which feels like a bit of a dud to end on. It drags proceedings out a little too far past the sweet spot it finds in its chorus with an extended, ambient-leaning outro. Still, each of these tracks are still enjoyable, and at its best "Yankee..." is sublime. This is a great record with some beautiful songs, never failing to be noteworthy and sometimes managing to be transcendent.
Never listened to this before. First impression to me is like an upbeat Elliot Smith
Widescreen devastation.
This takes some listening to but it does slowly grow on you. There are clearly lots of influences at work here and I could hear some similarities with Drive by Truckers songs of that time. Particularly liked Heavy Metal Drummer and Kamera
It’s good, it’s good I like it there’s not a bad song but it feels really long.4/5
Þessi vinnur á við aðra hlustun, sem er merkilegt í ljósi þess að ég er ekkert sérstaklega hrifinn af röddinni, og stundum finnst mér lögin ekki vera að fara neitt. En hún hefur heilmikinn sjarma, og mig grunar að hún batni enn við þriðju hlustun.
That was interesting. A band that I had not heard before. Thay are difficult to categorise - at times they sound somewhat like Elvis Costello (at least that is what came to mind) but only at times. The catchall label if Alt/Indie would apply, but this applies to everything if you want it to. No real standout tracks, it is difficult to imagine any of these songs being radio friendly hits. The whole album was interesting enough to hold my attention most of the time
I really enjoyed this album. Pretty confident my wife would enjoy and will have her check it out. Loved song #1, I am trying to break your heart. Added to playlist right when I heard it. Like more songs than disliked. Favorites include, Radio Cure. Loved the line, cheer up if you can, there is something wrong with me. Heavy metal drummer, Poor places and Reservations are also favorites along with I'm the man who loves you. Loved the line, "I always thought if I held you tightly, you would always love me like back then." Listened to a couple times today. Solid 3.5. will score 4. Will listen again.
there are quite a few things to enjoy here but nothing that pushes this above "a bit above average" for me. i'd probably give a 3.5 if i could but it leans a bit higher i guess. some parts are also a bit noisy
The endings of the songs could be better
This is a bit hard to rate because as it went from song to song, I'd think, "Oh, this is really sloggy, noisy, and annoying!" but with the next one, "Wow, there are some really charming moments and it's got a nice sound!" Listening a second time, I found that I liked more of the songs than not, but the sloggy ones were really long and took up more time. However, since I really liked the songs I liked, I'm going to round up.
I never boarded the Wilco hype train, but this was better than I expected. Solid set of songs, with some nice standouts.
There was mega hype when this came out and to me it signaled the end of the "first wave of indie rock." I wasn't too thrilled with the songs back then but I closer listen two decades later and I get the attraction. There is something about the vocal performances that turn me off still but the instrumentation and songs are solid.
A few really good songs on this one. Love Wilco
found this really depressing at the start to be honest, I don't know if it's just the lyrics or the music itself, and then it surprised my by becoming upbeat and kind of happy, enjoyed heavy metal drummer and pot kettle black
Objectively a good album but feels like lab grown indie rock. Jesus etc. being the exception.
Ah, so this is the missing link between Elliott Smith and Big Thief.
Bangs. Pot Kettle Black, Jesus, Etc., and Heavy Metal Drummer are my top 3. Overall fine album
This is the most indie shit i've heard in a while, I would have loved this back in 7th grade. I like the drummer's style a lot. Some of the songs are kind of samey but there's definitely highlights and I enjoyed the listen 3.5/5 (4/5)
Pretty good, generally enjoyable
Wilco ftw. Good album to commute to and I’ll likely return to it as a whole in the near future. Kinda sounds like if kid A fucked the bends, but he did it really nicely and smoothly so their baby wears flannels
Classcial Wilco, feel wholesome.
Listened to it twice in a row, will certainly listen to this more in the future. Really enjoyable Album.
Pretty good for indie rock. Didn't seem too whiny and there were some differences between the songs.
First, still love this album cover. Super cool art as it is, and reminds me of the brief but wonderful time I lived in Chicago. The album itself is excellent. I don't know a lot of Wilco's work, so I'm glad I got to listen to this one. Really solid music, original composition, interesting harmonic and melodic choices, some fun twists, and very well performed. I'd only heard a few songs by them before listening to this album and now I can say I'm a fan of the band.
I always thought I lobed it very much and I do but it's only a handful of tracks and if we're looking at album as a whole it does get tiring and bland but still a very good album.
Not really heard much from Wilco. Enjoying it. Another play required to cement my enjoyment.
I found this hard to rate. I've liked this album for a long time, I couldn't say how many times I've played some if these tracks. Yet I don't think it's a 5 star album. Personally, I prefer Summerteeth but that can't really be held against this album. The only flae this album has in between the wonderful songs are some that are admittedly a little boring. So I think this will get a 4, a very enthusiastic 4. "Jesus, Etc" is definitely a 5 star song though. I'll never tire of it.
Builds to a very strong close
Lots of mellow, purely musical bits that were really pleasant to listen to. Less about the percussions, more about the soft guitar. Good listen.
I always thought I liked Wilco, I just never listened to one of their albums all the way through. Now I know I like Wilco. The sensitive and light, emo sound of this album was an easy listen
I'd only previously listened to 'Jesus, Etc' and based my opinion on the band as such- big mistake. No wonder their record company freaked out. I've listened to the album a couple of times and it's really quirky, odd and random in places. I'm pretty impressed by it- 'alternative rock'/Art rock pretty much sums it up. It's a bit downbeat too- not a happy lively album but I like it.
Love Wilco and this album is considered their magnum opus for good reason. It's truly iconic. One of the first country-ish albums I ever connected with so it'll always have a special place in my heart.
I started out a little bored but warmed up to the music by the end of the album
I liked it quite a bit.
Even as the first impression, i'm convinced that this will keep interest and keep rewarding over many, many listens. Lovely variety and instrumentation, brave/weird choices, singalong writing and interesting lyrics. Definitely one to return to.
Calm melodies, distortions and a well done merge of electronics with classic instruments. I don't know why, but it just felt pleasant. Liked the ambient part, too. Highlight: Ashes of American Flags, Reservations
This album caught me in an exactly right mood for it. On a different day I would have most likely turned it off after 30 seconds and never came back to it. But that's not what happened. Never heard of the band before, so came into this listen completely oblivious. Judging by the cover I thought it would be some sort of melancholic synthy pop and I wasn't that far off. From the first seconds it became obvious that this was going to be a noisy and layered record with tons of ambient soundscapes in the background. And honestly, I think this creative layering saved this album. The songwriting was simple, yet effective. Nothing too crazy in the guitar department apart from distorted guitar parts in "I'm the man that loves you". Electric guitar in that track made my ears bleed. Out of place, out of tune and played horribly. It was definitely recorded like that on purpose, but still, my guitarist brain cringed quite a bit. Acoustic guitar parts sounded great though, as well as the little electric guitar licks that creeped up every once in a while. Simple chord choices worked well here, allowing the vocals and crazy synths, strings and sound effects to take centre stage when it's needed. The lead vocalist made his limited voice work on most tracks, providing simple and catchy melodies. Sounded a bit forced and pitchy at times though, but hey... at least he's authentic. You don't expect vocal craziness in singer songwriter sounding stuff anyways. Vocal harmonies in "War on war" fit really well, I wish they added more of that in the other tracks too. At times the lead vocal sounded a bit boring and dry. Anyway, the main elements that make this album interesting are production, layering and keyboard and string arrangement. I think there was even a brass part at some point. The mix reminded me a lot of early pink floyd and even some solo Roger Waters work. With a different producer this album would most likely flop. The mixing and mastering complements the music very well. Every little sound can be heard when you need it to be. The last two tracks sound especially great, even cathartic at times. It was hard to pull off all this noisy synthy sounds without the mix becoming a muddy annoying mess. But it worked. Will definitely come back to some of these songs on a cloudy day.
The two best songs are the ones I already knew going in: Heavy Metal Drummer and Jesus Etc. The rest of the album is alright and generally easy to listen to.
Really enjoyed this album, knew a few songs beforehand but it was a great piece. On reflection the previous BDB album should have been 2 stars.
Some really cool songs in the middle of the album. Starts slow but picks up!
Favourite might be War on War; have heard this album before but enough time passed that it felt like a new experience
Wilco is apparently a very popular band, but they've somehow eluded me. My stepfather loves them, so I've heard a few songs but never sat for an album. Overall I really liked this listen and added a lot of songs to my playlist. There were 2 or 3 songs I didn't really care for, they got a bit too depressing and trying for a Radiohead-lite sound, but aside from those the other more upbeat traditional alt rock tunes were great. Would definitely explore some more albums in the future.
New fan. Chill
je peux juste dire que ça finit très très bien
This was a very enjoyable album to listen to. Just great Indie Rock. At some point I might come back when editing is added and give it a 5 after a few more listens, but right now I'm giving it a 4 because some of the scratchier sounds don't appeal to me as much.
I might have writer's block but there is a lot going on on this album and it's beautiful. It made me think of late period Beatles, as well as Beck and The Flaming Lips.
Extremely introspective album, you can definitely telling he had a lot of regrets in his life, with relationships and addiction. I liked the simple but diverse amount of percussion in this album. I also really liked cutting the music and the heavy breathing at the end, cause he just got so much off his chest and probably feels exhausted and relieved.
it was nice
I was surprised by how pleasant this album is. It’s somewhat homogenous in sound through the first half, but remains somehow compelling in many tracks. I appreciate the variety of instruments, sounds presented in this album; it’s clear that the production is well thought out and executed, giving it the feeling of depth offered by bands like Radiohead with a folksy, country twist. I like the breathing room in this album, its very windy, pleasant, a feeling of simplicity even with a relatively complex arrangement. However, this is certainly background music and does not require a lot of “active” listening nor does it command focus. It’s very easy to listen to and excellent background music for your day. I liked it more than I expected— I was ready for it to be a bit boring, flat, much like its cover art. I was pleasantly surprised by the way this band retains a 90’s feel while still staying true to that turn of the millennium it was born from. Not a lot of replay value or sing-along capacity, but certainly nice.
Very good, but not quite great. Even though I was 17 when this (first) came out, I had never heard any of these songs, probably because September 2001 had more important events happen the week before. I will definitely come back to this though, and explore their other albums when I get a chance.
Fun album with lots of alt rock vibes.
Incredibly interesting instrumental details. Superb vibe music and a classic for sure.
This was a much more enjoyable album that I thought! Wilco has a very interesting style and I wonder if any more of their albums will be on this list. Lots of fun ones on here like I'm the Man who loves you and Kamera. The kind of music that is perfect for a car ride.
An experimental album of eccentric arrangements and weird melodies. I like it :) (7/10) FT: Jesus, Etc, I Am Trying to Break Your Heart
First song is very weird. But what a nice album. 4
Bel album indie. Original, belle voix, ambiance.
Leuk album. weinig opvallend, maar aangenaam om te luisteren
There are some really amazing songs and then just really mediocre songs. I wish I could rate it at 3.5. Standout song is 'Jesus, etc.', just so good.
Gostei bastante. Menos das músicas com cacofonia. Odeio isso.
lovely bit of early 2000s indie rock
<3
A couple of really great songs but the whole album has a lovely ‘texture’.
Chill garden-state type album
Primo art-alt-rock from the 2000s. Some songs hit better then others but that last song is incredible.
I enjoyed it! I’ve def heard some of the songs before
Relatively calm listening that can capture your attention when you least expect it, revealing a darker album than initially expected. One of those albums where you kind of need its Genius page pulled up just to appreciate the lyrics much more.
really very nice and cool
This was a hard one, and I listened to it a few times. This album has quite a reputation, partially as a result of its history (which I only know vaguely). I love the sound design. It is weirdly recorded and played, with lots of noise, distortion, collage and extraneous sound, which I find enormously appealing, but I can see how it is not mainstream. It is unusual to find this is an a gentle/semi-acoustic album (as that approach is often more common in industrial records, that are more into sound design). It reminds me of Grandaddy, which I also love. The songs are clearly growers. They didn't grab me at first listen, but I can tell that they could grow a lot. I intend to come back to this album and give it the time and attention that I think it needs. This could end up being a real favourite (but needs time).
Great album. One you can listen to again and again. Worthy of being on the list.
a warm and wistful classic
actually quite nice thoughtful indie
Solid indie rock album. Possibly one of the staples of the genre. The lyrics are deep and melancholy. The music is upbeat, unique and the sounds of various instruments makes it unique. Jesus etc. is an amazing song. This is a great album. 8.3/10
"I am Trying to Break Your Heart" is one of my favorite songs. There are a few songs I really don't like on this album, but a number of really great songs too. Not a masterpiece as an album, but an album with some masterpieces.
I'm not into every Wilco does, but overall this album is solid. It's been a very long time since I heard this album. There's always this sort of tired feeling to Wilco songs, they don't go all the way and are a bit restrained in their energy, but it fits their style (and age now). Indie Tiredcore? Everything feels like somewhat whimsical sad confessionals, definitely has that early 2010s energy, you can hear all the influences in later indie bands of that decade. I also enjoy some of the little experimental instrumental flourishes that most bands would not include, but it adds a depth to it that I think most don't execute well.
Good but not a huge fan
nice! 4/5
Great album and a great band, I like very much
:)
EEZ good Spacey when needs to be and tight for big lifts and sections All the little dubs and accompanying sfx are cool Lame review 2 Electric Boogaloo
This album is a bit frustrating for me because it has one absolutely brilliant masterpiece - Jesus etc, but its pulled down by a bunch of mediocre-good songs. Jesus etc probably ranks as one of my all-time favourite songs by ANY band and its on par with Wilco's other masterpiece Impossible Germany. Jesus starts out with some lovely violin-viola strings and a melancholic string guitar solo around mid-way but what really pulls the song together is Jeff Tweedy's bobbing vocals that paints a very bitter-sweet background. The rest of the album is merely good. You can hear Jim O'Rourke's influence in the mixing with lots of experimental loops and ambient background noise, but it doesn't quite make for a consistent or coherent album, so that gets a one star deduction from me.
Хорошо, но без хайлайтов. Эталонный янки - рокопоп.
Very good, wide array of sounds and catchy songs.
Not bad.
Bien.
Punt d'inflexió en la carrera de la banda, que per mi es tracta més aviat de la sublimació dels discos previs, aquí donant ja plena llibertat a la distorsió i l'emborronament amb guitarres i mur de soroll de les melodies pròpies de la casa
Quite liked this.
Tailed off a bit towards the end, but this was right up my street
VOTI I Am Trying to Break Your Heart – 3.5 Kamera – 4 Radio Cure – 4 War on War – 3 Jesus, Etc. – 5 Ashes of American Flags – 3 Heavy Metal Drummer – 2.5 I'm the Man Who Loves You – 3 Pot Kettle Black – 3.5 Poor Places – 4 Reservations – 2.5 AVG 3.45 Pros Non seguo i Wilco ma conosco bene quest'album e mi piace come suona, la sua atmosfera e com'è strutturato.
Blended together in a good way
Big improvement from the first album of theirs this list gave me. It’s wild how much they can sway between being outstanding and me finding them totally average. This album has some of their all time classics so it was a great listen.
Very vintage, nice songs
Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, Wilco: 7/10 “I am Trying to Break Your Heart” is an interesting roller coaster of an opener, somewhat chaotic, but it works. “Kamera” is a much more straightforward alt country garage rock jammer. “Radio Cure” has some interesting instrumentation going on in the background, but Tweedy’s vocals kinda make me want to die in this track, ngl. “War on War” is probably the funnest track thus far with a cool psychedelic synthy sound effect playing behind those classic Wilco grungy guitars. “Jesus Etc” is by far the smoothest most straightforward track I’ve come across on the record so far, and I feel it incorporates really well all the musical elements that I like about Wilco. One of my favorite songs of all time by them. “Ashes of American Flags” is what we’d call “experimental” and I’m not sure if that’s in a good way… “Heavy Metal Drummer” is another one of those tracks that reminds me of drives around town with my Dad, straight nostalgia. “I’m the Man Who Loves You” is another fun little song with great guitar work and captivating instrumentation. “Pot Kettle Black” draws back the energy a bit and pumps up the Wilco country grunge. “Poor Places” starts out strong then collapses into chaos that drags on for a little too long. We close off the album with “Reservations,” Wilco’s version of a soft rock ballad that fades hauntingly away into oblivion… Conclusion: A classic turning point in the timeline of alt rock, this grungy garage rock record might not be for everyone, but it holds a special place in my heart. 7/10
Nice indie music. Very relaxing
Some lyrics aged badly but still very good, maybe it's nostalgia talking
A good album but by no means an all time great
Ich liebe die erste Hälfte, die zweite kenne ich noch nicht, viel betrunkene Ästhetik und ich liebe Hesus, etc.
Very chill - I like it!
Good. Enjoyable. Solid.
.
For anyone that liked Elliott Smith but wished he was just a little bit less miserable.
Excellent vibe - evocative, finely-crafted songs, with interesting noise bits in between.
"I always thought that if I held you tightly You would always love me like you did back then Then I fell asleep in the city kept blinking What was I thinking when I let you back in?" (I am trying to break your heart) "You were right about the stars Each one is a setting sun" (Jesus, etc.) War flashbacks del año que hice selectividad. ¡Este disco es mucho más cursi de lo que recordaba!
First: provisional rating 7/10
Really nice style, mix between Radiohead and Eels
Reminds me of Dave Yeats. Enjoyed "Heavy Metal Drummer" as well as "I Am Trying to Break Your Heart" a lot.
Modern folk done right
It's a good album. Not really my style or taste.
I like it alot.
i love wilco so much so im biased - summerteeth is def my favorite by them even though this is more popular. jesus etc is a classic
Really enjoyed this one
Very nice art/alternative rock album.
Actually enjoyed the most listened to song the least, but the rest was solid
Classic; heard this one a bajillion times. They’re very good at molding folk music with experimental sounds
Klassiker
2002. Key Songs: Jesus Etc., Heavy Metal Drummer, Pot Kettle Black
Pretty good, liked it more or less, didnt stick enough, a bit samey.
CVJ Jemine.
I don't have much to say about this album. It's a wonderfull listen and I remember all the rage back when it was released, but i've never really connected to it. Great sound, not memorable, ok I guess
Wilco – Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (2001) On Day 191, I spent time with an album that proved to be a good listen, though it isn't something I enjoyed top to bottom. It steps into noise rock territories, a style I am still relatively new to, and while I can't say it is bad by any means, it didn't strike me as particularly revolutionary either. Despite the record not fully grabbing me, I walked away with some definitive highlights. I really liked "Heavy Metal Drummer," heavily appreciating the instrumentation, especially the great drum work right at the end of the track. "Kamera" and "War on War" were also solid standouts that captured my attention. Outside of those tracks, there wasn't much else I got from the project, but the standout pieces made it a decent session. A flat 3/5.
It was OK, wouldn't have over it. Might listen to some of their other stuff
어우 듣기 좋아
never been much into Wilco, but this wasn't a bad album to listen to. i think the phrase "art rock" makes a lot of sense, in reference to the wikipedia page. good album to listen to, but probably wouldnt come back to it
The highlight here is clearly Jesus, Etc. with the other tracks purely being support. I think I preferred our previous Wilco album more than this one but I need to come back to it and give it another shot.
boring, i dont really like his voice, the instruments are pretty cool some songs like pot kettle black, poor places, war on war and heavy metal drummer are interesting tho
Another band and album that would rate 4 stars were it not for the vocals. The band is doing really interesting stuff throughout the album, but the lazy-pitch style vocals are severely lacking. Tweedy doesn't sound like a lead singer on this album, but rather a guy who managed to get closest to singing in tune so he got nominated. 3 stars
Nice
Pretty fun
This feels like something I should enjoy, but I just could not get into it.
Didn't really like it, a bit plain
Meget cool, men også lidt kedeligt.
6.8
A guitar, three chords and a rhyming dictionary. Recorded in a time of band tension, this is Country Punk with experimental overtones. Not my favourite, but not the worst I've heard either.
This is just slightly better than jam band. It's right on the hairy edge of being too slow to be enjoyable, but stays above that threshold. I found it hard to pick out any notable lyrics while backgrounding it, but the times I honed in on them they seemed fine, but nothing that stood out.
When the song is done, just end it! No beeps, bops, screams, garbage disposal - just fade it out and END IT!!
I may be in the minority, but YHF is one of my least favorite Wilco albums. It has a few bangers and some sick guitar work, but overall is is fairly bland and everything "weird" feels contrived. Give A Ghost is Born or Sky Blue Sky anytime.
it was ok. nothing good or bad that stood out.
Better than I anticipated. I guess it stems from my old art rock roots. Gladiator was exposed. I would not have ever heard this if it was not for this app.
Yankee Hotel Foxtrot felt almost like a less emotional version of Weezer at times, and it didn’t leave a particularly strong impression on me overall. Still, I enjoyed the understated atmosphere of tracks like Heavy Metal Drummer, despite the irony of its title.
Solido sonido, basatnte depre. No me gusto demasiado pero de fondo esta bien. No destaco ninguna cancion en particular . 5.5/10
Getting Death Cab for Cutie vibes around Ashes of American Flags and Heavy Metal Drummer; likely the classic piano. I'm the man who loves you great hook! Dirty guitar Rolling Stones. Sympathy for the Devil woo! Poor place song construction Beatles. Overall very good album; I have my favourites, not a full re-listen so a 3/5.
Apparently this album has more cultural import than I am aware of. The only time I am aware of hearing Wilco was on a mixed album I bought in New Zealand. I don't remember any other songs on the album other than 'Grow Your Own' by Darlahood, which I imagine is nowhere near this list. Is this a Foster's Lager situation where way more cultural importance is attached to something by people an ocean away? Who knows. Anyway, three Wilco albums and no Sublime albums is not proportional to the culture I experienced at the time.
Art rock.
Interesting... got better as it went on. I wouldn't go so far as to call it some underappreciated masterpiece since those first few songs were a bit rough, and even the songs after weren't something necessarily that noteworthy, I did appreciate the musicality, especially with the inclusion of some electronic elements. Voice is quite of its time though, and it honestly does not hold up.
This album was introduced to me one summer by my pothead supervisor. Wilco's sound will always remind me of the smell of paint and the gurgle of a bong. The sound is a bit simple for me.
Jesus etc & I’m the man who loves you my favorite on the album Leaning closer to 3.5 then 3
The instrumentals are okay-ish, but this is definitely not the type of music that gets me hooked one.
03/06/2026 It was alright, similar acoustic play to the other songs... but it wasn't a bad album. Spotify listeners: 2.3 million
I've known this album for years. It always was, and remains, ok.
I liked the album; however, none of the songs really stood out for me. The one song that I couldn't wait until it ended was, "Poor Places" because near the end of the song that distorted soundtrack behind the repetitious "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" was just annoying.
A bit boring album with a couple of outliers.
The opener I Am Trying To Break your Heart is already better than anything on the last Wilco album I had a few days ago.
Improved in the second half and had some nice tunes
It was an okay album, but it felt a bit boring at times and kinda monotone. there were some good moments here and there. Favorite track(s) War on War Jesus, Etc. Pot Kettle Black
Meh. It’s an album. Nothing that I found particularly noteworthy or worth a second listen. Although maybe a a second listen might reveal something more. But I’m probably not gonna.

Como un rock-indie alternativo. No está mal. Medio aburrido
Wilco. With Impossible Germany the have one of my favourite songs of all time. But an album they never seem to get right in my opinion. Better than being there, but yeah. Underwhelming
This is some funky stuff. I'm pretty sure I semi-enjoyed it, but it's got some sort of anti-memetic effect that wipes a person's memory. I listened to the album twice, but can't remember anything beyond "I'm an American aquarium drinker." I think I may have just been activated or turned into a sleeper agent.
It had a good start and middle, was thinking a higher rating at first, but got very noise-based at the end. 6/10
Decent album, didn’t quite grab me on the first listen. Feels like it would be a grower though! Favourite track: Jesus, Etc.
3.3
Jesus Etc. was the song that put me onto Wilco so this album has always had a soft spot with me. Just a really fun indie record, with awesome song writing and sparse production. I’m a whore for this kind of stuff, but I can see how some people find it boring. IMO it’s just the right amount of experimental and folkiness. I think what sets this apart from similar artists and albums of this genre, is that despite being softer and slower or whatever, it doesn’t drag. Even the longer tracks are easy listens. This is peak night time walk core. Rating totally depends on my mood. I’d love to give this a 3.5
Where to even start with this beautiful album. Jesus etc was one of my top songs of last year for good reason it is incredible and so nice to play on guitar. Anywho this is a spend of record that I have heard all the way through a few times but I can’t seem to remember anything but I literally enjoy myself every time. kamara is my new favorite. Their take on radio head and use of multi instruments is top notch. I feel Like I should give it 1 more listen but it works perfectly as a record to hear and I understand it’s significance even if I could not piece together a coherent review. It lives in a space where I understand it’s critically acclaimed but it’s from the millennial generation this is equivalent of Sidney gish or even Alex G for Gen Z even if both of those can be considered millennial. Essentially it’s in the same space of neutral milk hotel where it’s so well liked I don’t ever revisit it but when I do I like it. One hit wonders essentially. I don’t really have much more to say about the music it’s a cold play and radio head mix up which is fun and deep and introspective
Good solid indie album - some lovely highlights. One I'll never mind listening to, even if it's not the first thing I'd reach for.
I've never understood the hype on this album. Not that it's bad but it is nothing special. The first song is incredibly boring and I had to fight to not turn off. Seems like every other song is solid
Not for me
I quite like this album. It's mostly indie rock, a couple of slow rock songs. The chords, instrumentation and rhythms are simple for the most part but a lot of the songs have very weird sound design which makes up for that. Pros - I like the genre, pleasant vocal tone, great mixing, interesting weird sound design, some nice drums Cons - Simple hamonies and rhythms for the most part, nothing especially struck me Songs I liked: Jesus, Etc. (Really nice soundscape, nice easy listen) Pot Kettle Black (Same reason as previous) Poor places (So many interesting choices with effects, phrasing, chords choices, nicest vocal performance, terrifying ending - really great song) 3/5 - Lots of interesting stuff going on and well made, only 1 song really hit me however
Not my style
Pretty average album, nothing was bad, but it could be bland at times. Some tracks stood out among the rest especially the C side that is all solid. Favorite Track - Heavy Metal Drummer Least Favorite Track - Ashes to American Flags ⭐️⭐️⭐️
I just can't quite get into Wilco, there's nothing bad exactly, it doesn't offend me. But it just doesn't quite click. I often find I think the song has some interesting instrumentation at the start but then they just stop it randomly and do an average acoustic song instead.
It was alright
ok
Heavy Metal Drummer is a bop...the rest I feel like I suffer through a bit.
Weird, has its very cool moments sonically, but not super exciting on a first listen. Not something I would do anything to. Maybe a walk on a muggy day, but that’s about it.
Un álbum para escucharlo sin prisas. Alex G coded. Introspectivo.
Not feeling well disposed for this today. Can’t find a way in. Seems noisy with no hook. Have gone back to it a few times. Needs more listening really before I can score it higher than a 3.
This is a pretty chill album. But almost a little TOO chill.
mm for me it's quite good the instrument and vocal is consistently even though some track are more sad and some track are more cheerful, for me the early tracks like 1-4 is the worse and then the best is like in the middle and then get more emotional and also cheerful at the end part of the album(not the last track), the instrument is basic and also complex at some of the track (at the solo part) but it's matches the vocals and also the lyrics so it's fine, I could see how the band put their emotion really into the tracks but I found it not att all the tracks, it's a point for adding very emotional track, about the vocal I think it was very distinctive like I can know it was his voice if I hear it. I found that some tracks have like very nosy and chaotic noise at the end I don't really understand why they put it in besides the instrument before, idk I think it's just not for me. o yeah for the lyrics I think its have like many interpretation and meaning I don't understand it fully but it was good though, overall for me it was really good but just for few tracks for an album it's not the best.
Este me gustó más que el anterior que me tocó. Tiene su punto en esa busqueda de algo indie rock pero no tan convencional. Y saca dos o tres temazos 6/10
This was a bit better than anticipated and Jesus, etc. is a good song, but then after listening there's still nothing I'd want to come back to. It's kind of middle of the road. Why is this special?
A two star for vocals but the instrumentals give it three overall
Pretty good. A little generic for my taste but I still enjoyed.
= the Beatles
I found the beginning of this album to be pretty strong, but it slowly fades and loses steam by the end. It’s still a nice listen that explores the more melancholic and introspective corners of modern indie rock. At times I could definitely hear the influence that Elliot Smith had on Wilco when it comes to general song-writing. I enjoyed "Kamera" and "Jesus, Etc.".
This album falls squarely in that transition from alternative to indie rock. Elements familiar to many of the great 90s bands with pieces that weren’t popularized until well into the aughts and teens. A little slower than I tend to prefer, and pretty whiny throughout, so not my favorite. But it definitely would be a nice album to have on while just staring at the stars.
I’ve tried once or twice with YHF before and it’s never really clicked. It still hasn’t massively but I enjoyed this listen more than previous attempts. If more of the tracks had greater focus on the dynamism and more memorable hooks of some tracks I’d probably be able to distinguish between the tracks a bit more easily in my mind. As it stands, it all feels like a bit of a staticy haze of sad rock with lots of filter effects. I’ve never fully understood the legendary reputation this album has both from critics and online, but Ashes of American Flags makes me consider how this album was received immediately after 9/11 and if that had a larger impact on the American cultural psyche at that given moment in time.
Otro álbum triste de amor con ciertas sorpresas. No estuvo malo, de hecho es bueno, pero intrascendente.
Was interested to hear this because I had largely missed it when it came out - indie rock wasn't my thing. I definitely feel like they're throwing the kitchen sink at this. Heavy metal drummer is fun. Overall I like this but don't love it. I'd give it a 3.5 if there were half stars.
3.5
This one was really good. Didn’t start off very strong, but war war is a really good song. Every song is very unique.
mid
Underwhelming. Had some cringe lyrics
Did not listen
It is boring, but not that I wouldn’t listen to it. You would put in to have some calming music in the background
Chouettes sonorités 2000s rock indé, mais pas forcément ce qui me parle le plus de cette période la.
A bit whiny. Jesus Etc slaps. Don’t love the ambient stuff. 3.5, giving it a 3
Not bad, if you're in the right (sad) mood
So soft but I liked the social criticism
consistently good without any standouts
Música alternativa suaves canciones
masos
Partially known. A lot of excellent songs on here, but I don't get it as a "concept" album.
3.5. nothing really sticks out but its nice to listen through. like a 2000s singer/songwriter with acoustic with some electronic. slightly psychadelic, kinda lowfi
Not really my jam, though I did like the intro
Kind of a crazy mix of things go on here - some of it was really lovely, the kind of music you imagine you would here if you watching Earth from space but some of it was truly chaotic. Maybe that was intentional, it probably was, but it kind of ruined it for me.
wilco is growing on me. i’d give it 3.5 . downloaded 1,3,5,7,8
This was so close to a 4 star album from me, but I just don't really like the lead singer's voice that much.
Pense que no me iba a gustar porque es muy indie pero la verdad me gusto
I felt the album was average no stand out songs but nothing that was bad to listen to just average
Kinda funky
My brother is a huge fan of Wilco and this album in general. It's an album that has some real high spots but some parts of it are kind of bland by comparison. Not bad just not as memorable as the peaks.
not listen yet, but is interesting
Really liked it! Never heard it before
YHF was pretty cool. No creo que habia escuchado de Wilco antes pero esto fue un buen intro. Nice crisp rock sound. Mi fave fue Ashes of American Flags y Pot Kettle Black 3/5
I think there are aspects to this album that are beyond my understanding, so I can appreciate where they were going with this… still not my favorite
Annoying intro. By track 6 I'm bored. The singer has stayed in one pretty narrow lane, and hasn't made much of an impression. The music is interesting though. The second half of the album was a lot more my style and I'm glad I didn't quit on it. The singer stepped it up a bit and the melodies were a lot catchier. Heavy Metal Drummer, I'm the Man Who Loves You, Pot Kettle Black, and Poor Places were all standouts to me.
Got already
It’s a decent, softer background type of album, but not necessarily my cup of tea. Despite that, it would fit great in the atmosphere of a local coffee shop! 3.0/5.0
I’m seeing Wilco this summer and have been meaning to give them a listen, so this arrived at the right time. This was fine. I think they’ll be a better band to see in a festival setting, but on record this was just okay.
God this guy's voice is depressing. For the first couple of tracks, musically I was quite enjoying it then it got a tad too dreary. Maybe listening to it first thing on a Monday morning wasn't the best setting
Pretty good, reminded me of Radiohead a little bit
Was ok
- Another Zionist. - I used to listen to this album along with Summerteeth (which I like more) before I started boycotting Wilco. This one is hit or miss - there are songs I really like (the first two, Heavy Metal Drummer, Jesus), and then there's everything else, lol. - I find Jeff Tweedy's tortured, monotone, lethargic voice that has very limited range can be a lot (e.g., Radio Cure) - I don't want to have to listen to him whine. - The guitar playing is pretty uninspired, so it's good that there is extra instrumentation, and some of it works really well (like the pretty keys in places) and the rest feels like it's trying to distract from the fact that there isn't really much to the songs or the standard instrument work (guitar, drums). For example on Radio Cure there's that annoying behind-the-beat banging on the guitar sound. - My main gripe with this album is that so many songs are plodding. Tons of skips for me here.
I liked Kamera and I’m The Man Who Loves You. The rest just didn’t quite gel for me
Dang this album was better when it went plinki plonk and ooouuuuummhh instead of doo doo doo I can't decide if I like or hate the singers voice I guess lightly sprinkling some interesting experimental elements over generic rockslop makes something "artrock" and "one of the greatest albums of the 2000s" lmao Nah it's too late for more plinki plonk and ooouuuuummhh the album is over dumbass
Interesante. Puede volverse medio denso
Was outside of my norm, but I liked it. Happy with the suggestion.
Production was good but his voice is so so dull
The production is so impressive here but some of the songs were missing a bit of something that was needed - maybe with time these will click but for now I'm going 3*
*2001. *I feel like I should like Wilco since alt/indie rock is my thing, but they just don’t do it for me. *The songs aren’t compelling or memorable. The vocals are meh. It’s good background music, but otherwise not great. *First song is silly, but the most memorable of the bunch. RATING - 6/10
okay really big fan of whatever the hell is going on in I Am Trying to Break Your Heart. IT'S LIKE IF COLDPLAY WAS LISTENABLE! I dig it! (aka guy with slightly whiny voice in an alt rock band). Heavy Metal Drummer is really cute :)))) Mostly neutral with a few notable exceptions. Better than Coldplay!
Solid straight-ahead post-punk and proto-indie, with a surprising ear for melody. Feels very teen angst, though, and so an odd one to come to in my 40s. Still, a great record, and one I'll be coming back to.
nice mellow sounds here good song writing
Album war sehr gechillt. aber keine richtigen Ohrwürmer dabei , oder songs die in erinnerung belieben
Fun, but not much my vibe.
Good album. 3,5
It was alright. I have listened to a bit of Wilco before and it is an ok listen but doesn't excite me.
Ranged from enjoyable to forgettable.
I have a friend who has been screaming about the brilliance of Wilco for years. I assumed they were a job band. They're not (really). They're mostly like, generic indie rock? I really wanted to love this album, but I found t only average. sorry Nate.
6/10… 00er indie / country rock / *2001
raro, piola, medio tom yorke, daft punk pero tb + melodico, rock chill
I thought I was gonna give this a worse review - I listened to this album a couple of years ago and was not impressed - however, I think my tastes have changed slightly, and this is more enjoyable. I like the low-fi production, even if I don't really like the lead's voice. 3 stars flat
recuerda a cosas que ya he escuchado
Not bad, kinda feels like a little like modern classic rock.
Not bad but also there's not anything particularly noteworthy about it. There are a couple of good songs here but the majority of this album is just kind of boring. I'd probably say my favorite track is I'm The Man Who Loves You. Again, this album isn't bad, just nothing special.
Kind of epitises late 90s-early 00s indies. Nice, but just a little bland.
non è il mio genere, ma ho comunque apprezzato
Really not sure where I fall with this album. It has a couple of good tracks (I’m The Man Who Loves You, Heavy Metal Drummer) and the rest just leaves me a bit cold. It’s not actually bad, but fact is,I’m struggling several hours later to recall much about any of them. Seems Wilco committed the ultimate sin of just being a bit dull with this collection of songs, and I can’t really figure out why it is so critically revered. 3 stars which is a middle of the road score for a middle of the road album
3.4
I feel bad giving every album a 3 for the rest of time but this was the perfect 3… there were parts that I loved and I cannot tell you when any of them were, nor can I tell you what any of the songs sounded like. was nice tho
I don't think I had ever consciously listened to a Wilco song before this, so I wasn't sure how I'd feel. The highlights for me were Jesus, Etc, I Am Trying to Break Your Heart, Poor Places and Ashes of American Flags. The other tracks were a little too muted for my tastes, or at least too subdued for what I was looking for yesterday. I could see this having much more to offer in the future. 3-3.5
Sleepy, boring, even a little corny? This is how I've at least partially felt about Wilco, and some other indie bands of their era. So, I really sat with this album to give it a shot and unpack why Wilco hasn't clicked for me. Here's what I did appreciated this time around: how much character they're able to squeeze out of a traditional 5-piece. Less is more here for sure, but that isn't to say Wilco's sound is simple; they're instead making something unique out of simple ingredients. This simplicity lends to a vulnerability in Jeff Tweedy's voice and songwriting, and I think that's where I get stuck. Vulnerability should be celebrated! But these earnest lyrics aren't hiding, or even tucked between fanciful production. I want big guitars! Inventive synths! A huge sound with a collage of details! But for Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, you have to confront what Tweedy is saying and the character of his voice, and maybe that discomforts me. Did this help me take a step towards appreciated authenticity and vulnerability in art? Maybe! Is it cheaper than therapy? Yep.
I’m really on the fence about this album, because it would easily be 4 stars. However, it had some really annoying screeching sounds that it used as transitions, and it also just didn’t feel good enough for a 4. It didn’t have any excitement, and it was really stagnant. High 3.
Inoffensive, but a bit bland.
Fine/moderately enjoyable
I Am Trying to Break Your Heart - 2.5/5 Kamera - 3.5/5 Radio Cure - 4/5 War on War - 3/5 Jesus, Etc. - 3/5 Ashes of American Flags - 4/5 Heavy Metal Drummer - 4.5/5 I'm the Man Who Loves You - 3/5 Pot Kettle Black - 3.5/5 Poor Places - 4/5 Reservations - 3/5
Wilco always makes me feel nostalgic for chicago. Album was good, if a little boring, was very easy and pleasant listening. Favorite song: Jesus, etc.
Okay I actually really enjoyed this! Morning coffee listening to Jesus, Etc and watching the world around me was a moment
As a 41 year old Dad who likes indie rock, I think this is supposed to be one of my favourite albums of all time but I couldn’t really get into it. Some of the songs kind of reminded me of a more refined “pavement” but most of it just seems a little dull.
3.2 I thought I liked this more than I did. Missing a bit of an edge from the earlier Wilco and definitely Uncle Tupelo albums
This allowed me to see a bit more of why people love this group. I enjoyed it, albeit quite boring and "rounded out". Like dull paint. I get it but it didn't excite me. I have a few thoughts juggling around my big dumb head. First and foremost, there is FAR too much Wilco on this list. Maybe its a balanced amount to show how indie alt music changed from '91-'01. Secondly, why is this band so revered? Probably nostalgia bait for Gen Xers chasing the high of their first concert or festival or first joint. Its just blase buttered noodle music. And last but not least, I HATED the first wilco album on the list but really enjoyed the Billy Bragg one. Not for nothing, that coachella country sound i despised is actually what they do best. The irony of my personal tastes compiled with some enjoayble melodies on this album allow me to comfortably give it a 3 stars.
mellow and sad
I can't say it's bad, and it's definitely lovely and/or interesting at times. But it's so boring!
Atmospheric, moody, melancholic. Loved the bibes but got a little weird near the end
It's a good album but it kind of just melts into the background.
There were spme great bits and other tracks where i'm wondering if this is the same band. It's a bit inconsistent
Not trying to get all depressed Tweedy
Very soothing music. Not in a chill, lo-fi way. I got 90s britpop vibes from this album, that kind of down to earth “people first” music. Favorited a few songs from this.
Not bad but just monotonous. Nothing special.
Enjoyed it more than I expected.
going in totally blind, I don't even know what genre this is definitely more my thing than Black Sabbath or Norah Jones lol
This is the second Wilco album in as many weeks. This one is better than the last and has some good tracks. It’s enjoyable. It suffers from the same problem as the other though - there’s a fair amount of mediocre stuff that obscures the good.
I liked some of the songs but it was largely boring
What're your thoughts on Pavement? Good? You'll find lots to like here. Negative? Well, there still might be something for you here. I mean, this is a good, complete album, but it's so stripped down in that 2001 kind of way that it's not really interesting 25 years later unless you're in Just The Right Mood.
*Some interesting tracks, some sounded Beatles-esque *At times gets too dull for a higher rating
I liked it! Didn't love his voice all the time, and it had some cacophony endings that I dislike most of the time. That said, I had already had one song on this album saved in my liked songs on Spotify, so I think that's saying something.
I had higher hopes for this knowing it's so highly regarded. It's fine? Nothing "bad" but I just don't feel anything for a lot of it. Low/mid 3?
Decent background music with some interesting compositions. Standout song for me was Radio Cure. 2.75 stars for the whole album, though.
