Reviews (page 7 of 12)

idk about this one lowkey too old for my taste (maybe not indie enough?) still a good album just not enough to drink matcha too and pretend to read women literature too

Good and I can see how they have influenced other musicians afterwards, love the synths. That being said, I feel like it didn’t really have any standouts.

Meh. Dreary Alt rock.

9/11 lol

There's some great stuff in here, but it sounds somehow forced at times. Still, a few tracks I'll enjoy revisiting.

I think I would appreciate this more if I listen to it more than once. But I do not want to listen to it more than once in one day.

Nice enough album

Their most pleasant offering to me yet.

i like the album cover! don't really care for the album itself though. certainly not bad just don't care

A solid 3. Voice reminds me a bit of Garcia.

I thought this was decent album. Instruments were good and vocals ok, but the lyrics made little sense at times.

I wasn’t blown away

Dull, dull, dull, but listenable. I liked the space-y noises and musicality, but none of the songs were distinguishable from one another.

A bit boring on first listen.

Sorry friends who worship this album. I have it two listens and still they only two songs I remember were War on War and Jesus Etc which were both fine. It's perfectly nice but... I didn't find it all that interesting or.memorsble.

Honestly, I can't get over the band being called wilco, it's a terrible name. I always thought it was the name of one of those awful 70s bands like smokie. Gah. Turns out it's not, so I've been avoiding them for the wrong reasons. It does also just remind me of the discount hardware shop we used to have. I think that shop was more interesting though. It was pretty ploddy, there were some alright atmospheric elements. I dunno, it just didn't capture me really. It was just on. Then it finished. It wasn't bad, but meh. A low 3.

3 stars

Melancholic and a bit boring

Okay i actually didn't mind this album, it does sound like country folk electronic molded together.

I need to give this more listens. Wilco has never been a fave, but too many great people love them to ignore, especially this album.

A lot of 3s lately, but they've just been middle of the road on first listen. I've listened to this one back in the day, but Wilco just never clicked for me. One of the best album covers though. 3/5.

Was Alright. Understated, Beta Band ish. Required a 2nd listen. 'Im The Man who Loves You' onwards stood out. Ive listened to em before Couldnt remember much about em. Like you forgot youd made Eggs, went for a poo and you have to eat em cold

Cool instrumentals but vocals are hit or miss. Many of the songs are craving some effects on his voice to make it less dry and he doesn’t really have the technical ability to cut through the mix. Jesus, Etc. and Ashes of American Flags were my favorites

I'm The Man Who Loves You.

Calm album had some cool audio bits decent album

Loved the cover art. The album is interesting. Woudn't go back to but it was nice to listen.

Amazing album to think about your life!

A good album, but nothing that great

Liked Jesus, Etc but no others stood out

Thought I’m not really a Wilco fan, I didn’t hate this listen through and maybe I’ll check out more. Maybe.

Not my thing, but some cool stuff going on.

Started off boring and a little annoying, to the point I was wondering how I would make it through the entire album. Then, it really picked up in the middle and I was enjoying it. Then, the end reverted to boring and a little annoying. This is not a terrible album, but I can't imagine I'd listen to it again.

It was fine. I don't think I was blown away by anything. It is hipster rock of the 2000's. To me they don't really do anything that blows you out of the water. I am not sure they are even subtle enough to blow me out of the water. I have heard good things about this album but it was just okay.

Better than I remembered.

It's ok. I feel like I have heard a lot of Wilco and my life and have never been able to form an opinion about them. Maybe that means I can't find anything to keep me interested, I don't know. I put this on and forgot what I was listening to after the first 5 songs.

The longer you do this list more you start to feel like a broken record. Like I’m always anxious I sound like a moron saying the same sorta things over and over again. But honestly how many ways are there to actually describe and review an album, you are always gunna be talking about the same types of things. But that being said this is another example of an album where instrumentally I love this album, but the vocals does nothing for me. I don’t think their singer is bad, just underwhelming. But the album sonically is so sharp and consistently good. I’d be curious to see what their other stuff sounds like if it comes up.

Not sure how to feel about this one

Some good songs but it doesn't hit for me as a whole

its really chill, pretty nice ig. cant emphasize the "chill" part enough.

Not noteworthy

Bit dreary, nothing really stood out. Not for me.

My heart says 4 but I can't find a justification

Staple from the band. I was introduced through their self titled album but need to listen to this one more...

meh, but I found one song by Wilco that I did like as a Spotify recommendation after the album was over, so I'll give it a 3

Solid but didn’t really stand out to me

not my favorite but had some good songs.

Måste lyssna noggrannare

Pretty good. 3.5/5

Never care for Wilco

Ahead of its time, that's for sure. I can see where a lot of indie bands drew inspiration from this album. Great use of keyes and organ. My favorite song was "Jesus etc." Not my cup of tea, personally, but overall solid. I didn't like the ending.

it’s ass to me at least

Easy listen, no standout songs

No. 338/1001 I Am Trying To Break Your Heart 3/5 Kamera 4/5 Radio Cure 3/5 War on War 3/5 Jesus, Etc. 4/5 Ashes of American Flags 3/5 Heavy Metal Drummer 3/5 I’m The Man Who Loves You 3/5 Pot Kettle Black 4/5 Poor Places 3/5 Reservations 3/5 Average: 3,27 Nice album. At times not melodic enough for me.

Senti Beatles, Radiohead, Weezer e Interpol, mas acima de tudo, me senti acolhido Faixas favoritas: Kamera, Jesus, Etc., Heavy Metal Drummer, Reservations

a really good album, not ground breaking imo but its still really good

Good voice, good variety in sound. Heavy Metal Drummer was fun. Right on that 3/4 line for me again for Wilco. Maybe another listen or two could get it there, but for today I am settling on high 3 again.

Great playing. Good songs. A little overproduced with the weird sound effects in the songs. It seems like they are trying to hard to be more than just being a great band. A lot dad songs but I’m okay with that. I also think this album is a victim of the time it came out. Radiohead was in full experimental mode so that really pushes people to do more.

New Artist. Fun.

It’s alright

I’ve listened a few times and while I like some of it well enough, I just don’t get the hype.

Meh. Not my thing. Kinda boring Edit: back half is growing on me, still not totally sold

Raar en cool, ga ik wel van op aan

So nonchalant it became a quadriplegic. 3/5

Bit boring at times Fave track: Pot Kettle Black

Wilco has grown on me a lot over the years. I think this album is ok and doesn’t highlight their strengths as much

all really good. i think i'll have to go back and re-rank comparatively. poor places is my favorite song.

Not what I was hoping for. I’d heard of this album many times and was excited to finally have a reason to listen. Unfortunately I found it boring.

Born alone is kinda ok

added one fav song from this artist but from another album “summerteeth”

Pretty solid, but it's getting drowned under all the other rock albums in this list

Nice chill music but wouldn’t put any of it on if given the choice

Gets better towards the later half in my opinion. Interesting moments throughout the instrumentation with modular synthesis and neat percussive elements. The lead singers voice has a nice unpolished feel and the instances where he cracks are my favorite. As I said before I like some of the instrumental choices but overall the theory is kind of lackluster when comparing it to artists like Radiohead which to me seems like they take inspiration from. Song writing is decent sticks out on a couple of songs but delivery could be better

bro loves to whine but I admit that some of the whining is pretty good

3,5 sterren

Melancholic yearning as a form of music will forever be my jam.

It's okay. A lot of the later tracks sound too same-y. I didn't really like the sombre tracks, which there weren't that many of, thankfully. Favourite Track(s): Suite: Judy Blue Eyes, Marrakesh Express, Wooden Ships Least Favourite Track(s): You Don't Have To Cry, Lady of the Island

Not bad but too 2010s hipster indie folk for me despite being from 2001

Saw that it was indie rock and got excited, forgot that most male indie rock musicians are terrible singers. Cool instrumentation and lots of good guitar moments but I can’t rate higher than a 3 cuz dude was obnoxious

Pretty decent just kinda slow I guess

Wilco’s great but in small quantities

Picked up in the second half, not bad

Listened Before: No Interesting. There were some good songs, but for the most part it felt like it was on the verge of being really good, but never got there. The singer was whiny. 3/5 Fav Song: Jesus, Etc. Least Fav Song: I Am Trying to Break Your Heart Listened to it twice. Jesus, Etc and Kamera are both good and everything else is skippable.

So that was a surprise, given I was expecting a Wilko Johnson solo offering. Obviously, I now know... Anyway, not bad, although the dreaded Americana was hinted at in places. Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit  ❌️ ★★★☆☆ (6/10)

This was interesting. Completely new band, and I wasn’t familiar with any of these songs but found myself stopping what I was doing to listen to some of them.

Highly regarded by many, and perhaps it suffers as a result. For me Summerteeth is the better record, and YHF feels a bit self conscious and cold.

Starts boring as paint, but ends up in a surprising experimental place.

It's OK. Not much more to say.

Quite interesting, I enjoyed it, probably worth another listen.

Really like about 1/2

3 , 5, 6 .10 are my favorites I've heard this record before, but it's a good opportunity to hear it again. It starts slow Three is beautiful Four is nice aswell Five is a classic, no doubt. Six lovely as well Seven as awkward as I remembered. 8 not remarkable in my opinion 9 is a nice song. 10 is a highlight. Such beautiful instrumentation. Loved it. 11 is beautiful aswell. Maybe a bit too long. I don't know if the ending adds much to the album. What can I say, this is not so different than what I remembered. This album was and still is a bit of a let down to me. The energy can't capture me. There are a few truly beautiful tracks here, but most are justOK. It's unfortunate, because I wanted to like it more this time. it's a flat 3...

Felt warm but easily forgettable. There's a few songs I think I'll revisit at some point

Barely 3. Not my favourite Wico

nice listen.

Generally pleasant but somewhat monotonous. No tracks seemed especially memorable.

I mean don't get me wrong it was certainly interesting, but really not my style of music. Not a huge fan but also could listen and not absolutely hate it.

Decent twee album.

The other Wilco album I had I gave a 4 because it grew on me. I've not had time to listen to this more than once.

Never heard of this guy before, might revisit but it didn't really grip me.

I remember when Wilco toured with Houmous & Chutney. Len Houmous was on one of his famous acid trips and was late to the gig. He’d spent 6 hours looking for Wilco in Wilcos! He spent a fortune on toilet duck! 3.3 9/11 Pot Kettle Black

Enjoyable, derivative, pacy

Some nice tunes. Would recommend.

Mellow, moody, hipster music. Gets weird here and there. It's fine for a certain chill vibe mood.

chaotic and fun i am trying to break your heart is very carnival-like and therefore my favourite

I already had this record for my other group! I generally enjoy this record, there are some really cool moments and a few standout tracks, but it doesn't live up to the hype for me.

Good but didn't get much listening out of this one

Quite like this - very musical. I like the sounds - experimental without being stupid

Feels kind of basic

Nebulae swirled in and out of existence. Ethereal wisps danced around one another, beautifully chaotic yet in perfect order. Ever expanding, the swirls thinned and stretched until there was only emptiness again.

Liked it more than I thought I would.

A fine listen but forgettable.

While this album and Jesus, etc have a special place in my heart and the vinyl is on my shelves, I can see how this album is not easily digestible.

Nice album. Bit of an edge.

It’s ok

i mean its fine

I want to like Wilco more than I do. Some of my friends worship them. But alas...

more like 3.5. couple of stand-outs. really atmospheric

CORN COBS!!

Decent but a little boring.

Andra lyssningen, lite bättre än förra men fortfarande lite tråkig

Somehow they reminded me some songs of The cure and Radiohead. There are several catchy sounds, that are enjoyable and relaxing, but they are followed sometimes by discomforting noises, which I don't like 😅 I would say 2.5

Favourite tracks - Ashes of American Flags, I’m The Man Who Loves You Sick distorted drum sounds, drums overall a highlight A LOT of interesting production moves Rough around the edges in a nice early 2000s way I’m the man who loves you guitar sounds - wicked, is this where every messy chaotic guitar solo comes from (Big Thief)? Ending of Poor Places - beautiful Ending of Reservations - also beautiful, influenced by this in ways I didn’t realize. what are these sounds (Nels) The songs aren’t quite memorable enough on first listen for me to give it 4, I think we’re at a 3.5?

I feel a *little* underwhelmed with the hype I’ve heard for this band but this was ultimately very enjoyable

This had flashes of real quality, Jesus, etc., war on war, kamera really stood out. With time I feel like I could get to a higher rating on this but I need more time with it.

Alternative country?

Mixed. Some very good and some dreck.

Soft-rock feeling album with sad-ish/heavy songs that still somehow manages to give a jammy feel.

There's definitely an artsy side to this record, and there's a ton of talent being poured into the project. I don't personally love how it feels like a band of good boys doing ok things, maybe it just feels this way because of my passing listen. Well produced. I would hear it again but I wouldn't seek it out. 3.2/5

This felt very early 2000s in a good way. I probably wouldn't listen to it again though. Fine album

I went from "uh oh" to "oh ok".

Simplistic guitar not bad. Monotone vocals not so great

This started really well. An album I had not listened to before so I thought that the 1001 Gods had come up trumps again in actually producing an album which I should hear before I join the choir invisible. Track one excellent. Track two and three good but then it all trailed off into much of a muchness. At least I now know that there is a difference between this lot and Dr Feelgood’s Wilco (RIP) Also helped by having Wilco (the band) and Billy Bragg’s album a few days ago. This really did confuse me as I would have thought it more likely Billy would have teamed up with Wilco (Dr Feelgood version) rather than Wilco (the band) but how wrong can I be? Just glad that Wilco’s (the UK shop selling all sorts of stuff) went out of business a few years ago. 3/5 15/10/25

lot of catchy songs on here but i don't get the hype honestly

Good production wise, and clearly approachable, but not for me.

i like wilco and finally i got an album with lyrics so excited to listen jk this album kinda mid theres like 3 good songs

Kamera and Pot Kettle Black are decent songs. Mostly doesn't do much for me though. Maybe a little better than the last Wilco album I listened to?

This was a solid, interesting album. I will need a few more listens to see where I converge with it, though.

Wilco complete their transition from alt-country to art rock. Some good songs but overall it leaves me a bit cold.

Kamera, War on War, and Jesus, Etc were cute. Radio Cure - recognised this one but don't know why. Heavy Metal Drummer - the way he sings 'summer' reminded me of the absolute travesty (or rather, masterpiece) that is Summer Girls by LFO haha. Overall nice in an easy listening way. Love the overarching wistful tone.

I have no real thoughts on this one, it was okay.

I liked it, but also some of the outros made my head hurt

Overall pretty good. Didn't stand out, but it was good.

The musicianship was honestly great. Good album overall. I wanted to like it better, but it didn’t really leave me with any feelings that are going to stay with me. If this band comes up again though, I wouldn’t complain

An okay album, I really don't have much to say about it

Quite forgettable. With a bunch of meh, but better than a lot of grunge pop(?). Or early indie or whatever. Jesus etc is it really really good though.

Just not my thing this soft music

I have bounced off of Wilco so many times. Maybe I’m too much of an Anglophile? Maybe this time it’ll stick…. Weird coincidence- I got this album on the 24th anniversary of the band releasing it online! Ha! That’s cool. So I know now why this has never connected with me before. Jeff Tweedy’s voice just isn’t engaging to me at all. Ironically, if his voice was worse it would be more interesting to me. Musically this is very cool- I just can’t pay any attention to Jeff or what he’s singing about. THREE STARS

Unique sound, but nothing grabbed my attention. I do tend to enjoy Indie, but there wasn't a song on here that hooked me.

Not utterly convinced

Decent. Perhaps a bit overrated.

Like the creativity. Might need a few more listens before getting into

Not even my third favourite Wilco album. I guess this album was a departure for them, but I like Wilco more after they departed from this.

Lyrical

Enjoyed being introduced to a new artist/someone I've never heard of. Liked the album.

I like the atmosphere of this album but it feels a really missed opportunity. There’s a bit of a dreamy, light guitar and piano soundscape going on at times, but it’s made far less compelling by the vocals that are very forgettable. The sound mixing is slightly off imo as it’s almost like the vocals are a notch lower than the music at times and that doesn’t help! But I did like the ‘feel’ of the acoustic elements and that’s enough to carry it to a 3.

It has a lot of atmosphere and manages to capture the solitude of the artist's vision with a slow deepening eerie vibe.  In some songs like "Poor places" it has a stark chalk board moment with the sound which while slightly annoying adds to the ambiance and doomy feel.  And the songs have an excellent rolling long lingering synth sound often piling on yet more depth as we reach the natural end of the album. The last song just takes the above and pulls it deeper into the designed abyss.  THE END. Sadly, I don't like the vocals on this and it stained an otherwise interesting album for my personal taste.

Wilco is meh.

It's relaxing to listen to. a bit on the boring side, but nothing bad to say about it either.

I want to like this album more than I do. I think I need to look at the lyrics, not just listen.

boring...but in the good way. i was locked in while this was on, office space had nothing on me

Enjoyable album. Some weak tracks on it but as a whole I was interested throughout. Best Track - Jesus, Etc Other Liked Tracks - I Am Trying To Break Your Heart Ashes of American Flags Im The Man Who Loved You

Unremarkable, the Radiohead we have at home. Inoffensive but nothing special

I listened to this twice but left it a week before reviewing. With two exception, I couldn't remember any of the songs by title. Quickly listening back through reminds me. I was expecting country vibes. I got something more akin to Beck in terms of instrumentation, but without the funkiness. A few lovely melodies and turns of phrase, and genuinely nice songs, that just struggles to imprint on the memory. When it works it's fantastic, but some songs feel a little lengthy or dense. I'd listen to a few songs, but by the end I'm happy to put something else on. 3

Very Pavement. Could likely get into this, but not in 24 hours. Sounds like a good album. Goes weird towards the end.

Wilco became Chicago's answer to Radiohead with this release which was much more layered and creative than their earlier outings, even if this was the last for the Tweedy/Bennett collaboration. Worth a listen.

Nearly but not quite.

so, so

Very of the era.

This was fine, but only fine. It was better that the other Wilco alumni I have listened to so far. The lyrics are quite dull, but it is made up for by the good instrumentation. I can’t say I’ll hold my breath for any improvement in the inexplicable third Wilco album to be included on the list.

This really should be right up my alley. But I just don't fully get it? It's not the album, it's me.

Lame und doch chillig

Pretty good record with a few very cool songs on it, but it never really got its hooks in me. I think if I listened to this album ten years ago I would have loved it. Best Track: Ashes of American Flags

This is hailed as a masterwork album so I may have had my expectations set too high. I was familiar with parts of this album and enjoyed those but this as a whole collective work was really boring and underwhelming.

Indie rock.

It's ok. It certainly has it's very own sound, which is always admirable in a musician, but it isn't my cup of tea.

Never really got into this band, glad to hear this album holds up. 3.5/5

Just found this a little boring if I am being honest. Nothing really of note stood out.

Fine. Enjoyed it in parts. Nothing exceptional

It's by no means terrible but I fail to see why this receives such widespread acclaim. 3.5*

It's funny how I avoided this album for the longest time because I thought it was going to be soft folk rocky shit which I wasn't too keen on years ago, now... well i like that stuff but I don't think I love this album like many do, mainly because I found it kinda aimless or I just couldn't really follow what some songs were going for, but at the same time I still enjoyed it so I think it will grow on me the more I listen to it

I liked this. 3.5

Hieno kansi.

Slow beatles inspired. Liked track one, two and five. Album dropped off after track six and merged into one. 5/10

Some songs were pretty decent and others were just … noise. I dunno. Never found footing with this album

Good album of original music, though some songs have repetitive/monotonous styles.

It's the album I wanted to like. I've heard enough people talk about bands like this. The Shins, The Tragically Hip etc etc. Cult followings, people who have had their life changed by it, and cool people who listen to them. And as the album came through the headphones, I found that while the musicianship was fun, the songs sung with heart; there was a boring level of simplicity to it all... Each song felt like two chords. You could tell a lot of work had gone in to the final project, but it all stemmed from utter simplicity. And when I only get one to two listens a day, I wasn't particularly over analysing the lyrics. I enjoyed it, but nothing really stuck with me. Dare I say it, it felt like background music. Now, background music to a party full of trendy people! But that's not how I consume music. I want it to make me feel something, he energised or inspire me to perform myself (yep, I'm weird like that). This album did not. 'War on War' was probably the one that I'll take away with me. Although I really enjoyed the melody of the finale track (and a great way to close in epic form!). I await the hate from the hipsters. I really wanted to like this more than I did. 3 stars (Just!).

Some good tracks. Some ok. Some noise

Listened Before? N Hm.. This is just another 00's "indie" record. Not really my cup of tea, although this one is fairly unobtrusive. It was okay. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Heavy Metal Drummer

Not too bad but not too good as well

Id say this is pretty enjoyable background music. The art rock influence in this album is pretty awesome, and loved it when it went to more experimental bits :)

There's something beautiful about this album; although it isn't the most groundbreaking album ever, it is a nice escape to a slightly less intense one. An album that can make you appreciate life through being subtle but not devoid of essence.

It's a little too artsy at times, but I like Wilco.

I was disappointed.

A little forgettable, but not bad.

Wilco just doesn't really do much for me. They're not bad, but I don't feel compelled to listen to them repeatedly. This album is just sort of thoroughly "meh" for me.

It's fine. Kinda boring.

There are some nice sounding tracks in here. Lots of cerebral experimental stuff too. Altogether felt like the album was fine.

It’s fun but not particularly noteworthy. I feel like it’s on the cusp of being good, but never really gets there… it is a fine album, but it is never exciting. Did not improve on subsequent listens. Big nothingburger album

Too slow for my taste

Wilco fits the mold of a band I SHOULD really be into...but they always come off so milquetoast to me. They're inoffensive, approachable, relatable indie rock. I've actually listened to them quite a bit over the years. But I can't say I've ever been particularly into them.

Didn’t hate it as much as I expected to but some of this was not a great listen. Bit too atmospheric for me. Specific rating - 3.2 Fav song- Jesus, etc Least fav- reservations

The songs I liked were pretty good fun and I’ll probably listen again but didn’t completely make up for the songs that were boring or noisy. Favourite song: I’m the Man That Loves You (or Kamera) Least: Reservations

This was on the disappointing side. I read the Wiki before I listened and was expecting wonderful things, given that it's their most critically acclaimed album, but it didn't excite me at all. I still think Mermaid Avenue which they did with Billy Bragg was their best output; I yearn to hear more Wilco of a similar vein. A low 3.

Liked half of the songs. Lot of ambient music

Love the story behind the release of this album!

A couple of good songs but mostly pretty monotonous

In the first 90 seconds of this album, I’m already sick of the singer’s droning voice but it does get a little better. There are some cool unexpected sounds to the music that make it interesting enough to keep listening. Didn’t find it groundbreaking, but not bad.

I've heard of Wilco, but can't name a song and never listened to an album. The album is good, but seems more like a "critics choice", than well liked. There are several songs that contain or end in noise, which isn't my favorite. Having listened to this, Wilco has a better album - Lay It Down Best Songs Jesus, Etc. Heavy Metal Drummer

I can see that it’s probably interesting, but I don’t really like it. Lead singer’s voice is not endearing. But the album cover is fantastic. God, I love those buildings.

***An ok album

Hmmm… want to like it more, but not convinced. Sounds nice, really well produced, but is it missing IT? Have listened before, but have never rushed back. 3.5? Yes, 3.5 in Roon, don’t want to risk losing it forever.

I really enjoyed the vibe at the start, but as I listened it slowly faded into the background

A boring version of Radiohead mixed with a boring version of Beck. Some songs are good, but the album drags.

I know this well. Classic Wilco. If you like what Wilco does then you like this one.

And now a Wilco album the day after a Bragg/Wilco Guthrie album. This is one that I can't say I get being on here. Is it bad? No, not really. But is it anything special? I'm not sure that it is. From my listen it just seems like kinda straightforward indie rock music. Maybe this was one of the efforts in that inspired later artists, so is important for its influence. It did come out in 2001, which is earlier than I can say I know of a more general indie rock scene being prevalent. Most of it was fine at worst, with some tracks being a bit better. I thought the second 2/3 was more enjoyable than the first few songs, and I liked the middle section of that 2/3 the most. Some parts were more involved than others, but a lot of it was pretty low key. I didn't love the singer's voice, and the instruments were mostly subdued (they did come alive a bit on I'm the Man Who Loves You, which was nice). There were a few happy/fun spots, but the rest felt melancholy. It reminded me at times of Bright Eyes, who I don't particularly love either. I appreciate when an album manages to have no bad parts. But being not bad doesn't really make it good on its own. There should be more to it for it to be a great album. I can't say I thought this was more than fine. Overall: 2.9/5

Not Wilco’s best effort. It’s a fair enough album, but I spent most of the time listening to it waiting for something to happen and it never did. It’s got a gentle vibe, but it doesn’t excite. For all the experimentation on it, it doesn’t light any fires.

The vocals aren’t my favorite, but the music was really good

i am trying to break your heart is a masterpiece song. album is ok

I was expecting to hate this album (don’t know why), but I enjoyed the chill acoustic vibe this gives off if I’m being completely honest.

The artist description on Spotify said alt country but I think this album was closer to alt rock. I think i would've enjoyed alt country more.

C’est plutôt chouette, ambiance rock calme. Pas transcendant mais agréable à écouter.

Interesting cover. 1. On second listen, kinda like it.. 2. Decent song with ok lyrics. I do like it. 3. This can pass with barely any notice. Meh. 4. Like it. Unfortunately true lyrics. 5. Not bad. 6. Meh. 7. Like it 8. Meh. 9. Whatever. 10.Ok..11. Meh. OVERALL: I just couldn't concentrate. When I did, t was ok. I think with multiple listens I would actually like this album, but I won't ever love any of the songs. Not a must.

Huge indie classic that I can'T really get into for some reason. Fantastic production job from Jimbo though.

Boring as hell but I liked most of it.

Good album but more for the background. I need to listen to it multiple times to actually find out how great it is.

Not one that absolutely blew my mind, but definitely one I can see growing on me in future listens, it does feel like one of those albums. I see why people call it boring, but I think that's the nature of this kind of music that you really need to know it well and listen to it a lot to really understand the complexity of everything going on.

The great thing about a dog is that they can take it, but they can't dish it out. You can call them anything and they don't mind and, because they don't mind, you like them and, because you like them, you don't really mean. It's all in good fun. When we picked up our most recent dog from the rescue, my wife and I tried to puzzle out his character. He seemed okay. He was a little nervous, but he had social skills. He'd been hurt before, but he didn't want to be defined by that. Our older dog, she listens to Siouxsie and the Banshees. She loves Courtney Love. I reckoned the new dog probably liked Wilco. It wasn't meant in a bad way. He was does a basic dog with a lot of hair on his chin. I was right though. When he gets anxious or overwhelmed, my wife sings to him and he likes Jesus, Etc. a lot. Maybe that's especially basic for a basic dog, a dog that also likes various McCartney melodies and Patience by Guns'n'Roses. The rest of the album doesn't really do it for him though. I think that's unfair. I Am Trying to Break Your Heart isn't bad, underneath the bleeps. Heavy Metal Drummer, I'm the Man Who Loves You... these are decent efforts, but there's a lot of fuzzy veneer on the record that's trying to keep the good bits hidden. Occasionally, people let off fireworks and no amount of politely phrased melody will distract the dog. That's when we play the brown noise. It drowns out the fireworks, but also causes a heaviness in the room, a dense fog in the head, and dull buzz in the stomach. I don't know why Wilco decided to put so much of that on Yankee Hotel Foxtrot - it distracts from the most egregious things, but leaves an unsettled, unsatisfied feeling. Much of the album is even-keeled and well-tempered, despite the attempt to muddy it up with atmosphere and static. Yet, the best moment of all is Tweedy's struggle to deliver "Your voice is smoking" at the end of the bridge in Jesus, Etc. - the actual distortion of pushing himself. That's the dog's favourite bit too. He's basic like that. He won't mind me saying so. 3 I bought Yankee Hotel Foxtrot many years ago because someone told me it was their favourite album. Actually I always seem to be hearing how it is a favourite or how it is superlative. I read the Wikipedia page today and was bowled over by just how deep and wide runs the praise for this record. Anyway I bought the cd back then, disliked it and then gave it to a charity shop. I usually keep CDs I don’t think much of in the Box of Shame (there are actually two now) but when I dislike an album I know someone else will certainly grab off the shelf for a bargain - something trendy, however disappointing to me - I donate it. No point burdening Oxfam with yet another copy of Black Market Music or Alone With Everybody. Anyway I was wrong to give away Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. It’s not bad at all. It has a few songs I really like - Kamera and I’m The Man Who Loves You, maybe Radio Cure, and I can certainly stand the rest. But I think my giving it away was born more out of contempt for the popular idea that YHF is superlative in some way. It isn’t. It’s very nice. Jeff Tweedy is a decent songwriter - I really like the subtle uneven phrases that pop up in some of these songs; music that hides the work that has gone into it. I have some sympathy for that line of American non-singer - even if Tweedy’s crap voice lacks the intimacy of Elliott Smith’s or the conviction and drama of Conor Oberst’s (both of whom I also believe to be better songwriters than Tweedy). The lyrics have a poetic sheen in the moment even if they don’t stand up to actually being read. I like the variety of instruments. I like the noisy bit where the Lady goes ‘Yankee Hotel Foxtrot’. Yes. Worth keeping on the shelf. I shall go back to that Oxfam and see if someone else has made the mistake of scorning this CD. No I won’t. It won’t be there. Someone will always snap up anything vaguely interesting and leave you picking through multiple copies of Life for Rent and White Ladder. 3/5

So many weird outros

I like Wilco but this was just an OK album for me.

last good thing they did

Good. Well constructed and well-produced. But I’m not sure how much i like their distinctive, laconic sound. This album seems a bit repetitive & I’ve heard other Wilco that I like better. A 3 for now, but I’ll give it another listen.

Some interesting sounds and ideas. DIdn't really stay with me though.

Nostalgia blast. Takes me right back to sitting in my dorm room, where I absolutely pirated this record off my uni's P2P network in the fall of 2002. Despite me mostly falling out of love with this brand of rock over the years, Heavy Metal Drummer is still an all-timer. Cozy production. But still a few lowlights, like the last 2 tracks which kind of drag it down. 3/5

It's pleasant enough and I don't dislike it, but I also don't know why it's here.

I wanted to like this but it is on the edge of arty music and just plain boring.

See review of the last Wilco album reviewed only 4 days ago…

starts to go there but then doesn't stay there

Way better than I expected

3/5 Kaikki biisit alkoivat muistuttaa toisiaan, vaikka mukavaa kuummeltavaa olikin.

A grower - as it meandered through the tracks it shifted from a bit of a dirge to an interesting eclectic trip through life - in the end - quite good

It was good but idk lol

Very creative writing and some cool sounds

Wasn't expecting to like this as much as I did. Really interesting to get into a record by a band that for some reason I'd previously dismissed. Great atmospherics, Jesus Etc is a winner. Would I come back to it again. Yes. Has it changed my life? No

It hurts to give this a three because it's truly not good enough. But just fifteen years ago I had this album on repeat and I'm not a dumb person so there must be something to it.

"War on War", "I'm the Man Who Loves You"...

Don’t get the fuss

I'm surprised with myself that I can't connect with this album. The production sounds good, the vocals are kind of catchy, and there's some experimentation by mixing americana and indie rock. Regardless of being interesting, doesn't do anything for me.

Not a fan of Wilco. They are a bit too easy rock for my taste but I will check out some tracks because even thought I do know what they sound like I truly have never heard a song. yea, not my style. moving on.

I thought I was going to hate this but some lovely songs Favs: Jesus etc Heavy metal drummer I’m the man who loves you

Interesting sound, but the guy can't sing for crap. 2.7/5

Pretty ok. That's Wilco. Not exciting but not bad. Like a soundtrack to a montage where the main character in a movie has their life on track. Things are gonna be ok. Three stars.

I warmed to it. There’s more going on behind the scenes than I thought there was going to be after the first track. I’d listen to it again. Not destined to be a regular, but I enjoyed it.

Kokonaisuudessaan mukavan rauhoittava albumi, jossa sellainen vuosituhannen vaihteen indiesoundi.

Love Wilco, love a few songs on here, but the overall artsy vibe that permeates much of this release kinda misses me.

3.1 Too Indie for my taste unfortunately but alright album. Faves: heavy metal drummer

309/1001

like proto-radoiohead but sadder and more boring. it's very same-y. one song at a time is probably fine but the whole album is exhausting

Mild, a bit relaxing, and nice to listen to in the car. Simple, a bit boring, and hard to pay attention to.

it was alright, the start was slow and would probably have turned me off if not for the fact i’m doing one album a day. the middle and end of the album were more to my taste, if not something i’m likely to go out and listen to.

Listenable. Some great, others just okay.

Was pretty boring. No “bad” songs. 3 stars.

It was ok some nice songs but didnt grab me be interesting hear more from them.

Glad that I went back to this one with good headphones, it helped a lot. This bumped The album from a 2 to a 3. There were some good things, like an interesting use of non-instruments as instruments. However, the vocals for the most part were not good and overall there was quite a bit of repetition that was boring. Still a pretty mid album.

This one has a pretty big reputation. I can’t really say I’m too impressed by it. I’m not a big fan of Jeff Tweedy’s scratchy hipster singing voice, and the sound is pretty mopey and verging on monotonous. But there are some good songs here, and it is very well-produced, and there is clearly a vision. So I can’t love it, but I definitely can’t hate it. In the end I think the story behind the album (and its ominous release on 9/11, with that cover??) are a little more interesting than the actual album. Best song: Pot Kettle Black

Cool album title and cover artwork. I really wanted to like it more and gave it a few runs. But the boring voice messes it up for me. favourite: "Kamera", "War on War", "Heavy Metal Drummer"

This is an interesting album to me. It's much more in my vein, than some of the classic rock and hip hop albums that have been on this list. It didn't really have any songs that reached out and grabbed me. Nevertheless and notwithstanding, i can see why my indie rock sisters loved this album. Jesus Etc. was the stand out song for me. It would be a background album that i would put on to make people think that i'm "hip" and "cool" but i probably won't spin this just for funzies.

Pretty cool vibes but the random sounds don't help much.

Meandering early 00's indie pop. Gets much more interesting and musically experimental in the latter half of the record, with "Pot Kettle Black" being a particular standout for me. Refreshing, novel, and profound for the time period, but Jeff Tweedy has the ignoble distinction of being copied ad infinitum because of this record. I still think Uncle Tupelo was better.

I would consider this to be as mid of an album as mid can be Best Song: Jesus, Etc Rating: 5.0/10 3 Stars

Jesus, Ect and the other songs
