Abraxas

While listening to the album I found myself thinking about the way we listen to them and consume art in general, The conclusion regarding this is that, particularly, the way I consume art revolves around like, dislike and experience. Based on this analysis method, Based on this logic, I decided to give it a small rating of 2, the work is pleasant especially at the beginning, several experiments and syncretisms with Mexican and Latin music in general, but, leaving aside exoticism for the simple fact that it is peculiar, personally, this album didn’t awaken anything in me, neither good nor bad, much less a great experience, it is just passable, pleasant. Only to conclude is it necessary to evidence that in its historical and regional context, because it is Latin and not hegemonic, when compared to the big names in British and American psychedelic and hard rock, the band made an excellent work taking of already established rock and Abraxing it, creating an impressive syncretism.

Glad I listened, being mostly unfamiliar with the legend.

The best songs on this album are the first and last track. "El Nicoya" is an exciting percussion feature, and "Singing Winds, Crying Beasts" is a beautifully transcendent piece of musical orchestration. Between the sweeping chimes & effects, and the weeping guitar, it's absolutely beautiful. Too bad the rest of the album is as dull as classic rock gets. "Samba Pa Ti" is the only song that actually stands up of the tracks in between the beginning and end of the album. It's not groundbreaking, but its a nice guitar feature. The three covers, "Black Magic Woman", "Gypsy Queen", and "Oye Como Va" are so overplayed at this point that it's impossible for me to get into them in the album context. They're fine, but passable, I was never into these songs to begin with. Both of Gregg Rolie's songs are insufferable with some of the worst lyrics, overly aggressive singing, and basic jam-band riffs I've ever heard. These songs were very irritating and I'd be very pleased if I never had to hear such subpar songwriting again. That only leaves "Se a Cabo" and "Incident at Neshabur", which were boring. I didn't think this album was particularly great, and I probably won't revisit it.

Not a fan of Santana but I do appreciate his guitar playing. Apart from the 2 popular songs, Black Magic Woman & Oye Cómo Va, on this album, the rest just passed by me.

Yeah it sounds nice and the instrumentals are enjoyable but there’s minimal lyricism and that’s just not what I enjoy listening to.

I mean it was smooth, but it just kinda felt too similar the whole way through. Maybe if i was in the right mood. Just felt like a really long interlude, never quite getting to any songs

Peak Santana for me was the trio of albums that included and followed Caravanserai. In comparison this sounds rather brash and rough.

I have never listened to Santana, and it's a bit rough. I want to give it 1 star because I think it sucks, but I feel like I shouldn't because Santana is like legendary or something? I don't know.

Day 3. October 25th 2022. Nice music. Could be nice to put on in the background after a long day of work, sipping some cognac. But not very interesting to me.

Not usually my thing, but I quite enjoyed some of this. The guitar posing I expected was there, but it didn’t seem so in your face as other Santana songs I have come across in the past. And some of the songs here quite enjoyed, most notably Incident At Neshabur. The style straddles the 60s and 70s neatly, and the percussion throughout the album helps lift this away from the usual rock guitar fest a little. It’s not going on my regular playlist, but I did enjoy this in patches more than I expected.

Santana always scare me. All that noodling, all that hair. It's not for me I'm afraid. The drums and rhythm picked up my interest. Black Magic Woman was surprisingly soulful. I got a little lost five tracks in though. It comes back to all that noodling, all that hair.

Disappointed in h9w .uch I didn't ibe with this album.

Man fuck instrumental albums

I knew a couple off this one, ‘Black Magic Woman’ - which I did not know was a Fleetwood Mac song and ‘Oye Como Va’ which I did not know was Santana. I remember my mate playing me this when I was a child telling me what an amazing guitarist he was - problem is I dont like that guitar sound, particularly when accompanied by jazz meanderings, it reminds me of that stoned feeling when the buzz has worn off and you’re just stuck with it, bored of it and a bit sad. It just doesn’t work for me, there’s not much singing (not Carlos) but I don’t like that either, just not for me this.

As much as I appreciate and respect Santana, this album didn't do too much for me. The odd song worked but ultimately it dragged for a relatively short album.

If every song was as good as Black Magic Woman and Oye Como Va, then this would still probably only manage a 3.

I've never understood the attraction of Santana. This album has one good song on it - and the original version by Fleetwood Mac is far better.

I was watching the grand prix and eating Rolos, when the phone went. I pick it up and it's a wrong number and they hung up on me. So, I phoned them back and screamed "SANTANA!" down the phone at them. I have no idea what they did with that information.

Lots of musical masturbation here. I've never been able to completely define why I dislike Santana's music, and listening to this didn't help much. Carlos Santana seems like a genuinely decent fella. He's engaging and charismatic in interviews. Maybe it's the curse of being subjected to "Smooth", a truly awful musical moment. I love Black Magic Woman - the ORIGINAL version, written and performed by Fleetwood Mac. Santana's version is the most well known, and it's fine, it just pales in comparison. Oye Come VA is the preferred track here This album doesn't annoy me enough to rate it a 1, but a 2 feels like an act of goodwill. You're better off seeking the Fleetwood Mac version of Black Magic Woman and a deeper dive into Pete Green's guitar work.

Slightly disappointing. Was expecting more.

Highlights: Black Magic Woman, Oye Como Va Latin-inspired jam-band aesthetics, I pretty much grew up with this album playing in the background, but I never much enjoyed it. Listening here, I still don't...I find jam bands in general to be meandering and pointless most of the time, with hints at accidental brilliance. I prefer finished music, please experiment on your own time. Having said that, I do find Oye Como Va to be a relaxing and enjoy able track, and Black Magic Woman is definitely classic. I just can't get into the rest of the album.

It's a very good instrumental album (or almost instrumental), but nothing very special to me.

Dear God, Santana is fucking boring. This is prime noodling by an alleged guitar god. (lower case g). Yes, people play several of these tracks and they are a staple of the dying technology radio but why? Are there any people under the age of 200 still listening to this? This without a doubt is the Lawrence Welk of those born in the 50s. It is just a painful listen. My dog even covers his ears. Stop kidding yourself - if this music, like Steely Dan, is your groove, you have already fucking died and you are in music Hell. Oh, and Carlos is also joining you in Hell because, allegedly, he is also a shitty husband and parent. 0/5

This just sounds so dated, it's like a parody of a cheesy lounge act. The first track made me wonder if they knew they were recording as it sounds like they're just tuning up. I can't for the life of me fathom what makes this record 'essential'.

Have to confess I didn't manage the whole album, though it was also better than I expected. I don't really like the whole blues rock thing, it gets right on my wick, always feels self-indulgent in a way that I just can't reconcile. And it goes on a bit really doesn't it.

Utterly unlistenable. The guitar sounds like a dying whale. Fusion music is the worst. I wouldn't eat chicken and chocolate on the same dish, so why would I want to listen to a mixture of latin, jazz and dying whale rock guitar in the same song? Lock it all in a box and shoot it off into space. Torture some poor bloody aliens with this shit, not me!

Never been a fan of almost purely instrumental albums. Comparable to turning up at Wimbledon buzzing for a portion of strawberries and cream just to find they’ve only given you one strawberry in your cream and charged you £9.50. Big let down.

Background restaurant music at best. Like a particularly aggressive form of food poisoning I would not wish this on anybody. Trendy music with absolutely no bite to it at all.

I just can’t imagine how it’s even possible to make the electric guitar sound so wanky, but here we are. Faux feeling is included everywhere on this album, technically proficient playing but there’s just no true emotion behind it. It just feels so empty and emotionless. Genre wise this album is a bit all over the place, I can appreciate the Latin rhythms, but there’s attempts at harder rock or even heavy metal falls so flat on its face that I don’t understand how anyone could enjoy it. Santanas singing is flat and uninspiring. Will not be listening to this again, as I don’t like torturing myself. 0*
