Reviews (page 7 of 11)
I’m not the hugest fan of 50s rock, but Buddy Holly falls under the better group of this genre.
Pretty lovely. Buddy Holly’s voice is very boyish and somehow holds up seventy years later. Had only ever listened to That’ll Be The Day but there are better tracks on here. Standout tracks are: “Maybe Baby” and “Last Night”.
I really enjoyed this. Everyone has heard the hits, but the rest of the album is very good as well. The impetus of rock and roll, personified.
I enjoy the sound of the 50s early rock and roll and you don’t get much better than Buddy Holly for that. You can hear the early building blocks of rock and roll which spreads to music of today.
This was a quick listen and I actually really enjoyed it despite my initial pre-judgement. There's some really cool sounds and little nuggets that stray away from being boring / predictable. You can tell how influential he was for future rock & roll. Some songs I wouldn't intentionally listen to again, but there are a few I would.
Maybe baby I actually liked this album...
Kinda enjoyed this as far as old school rock & roll goes
Surprised by how many of these I knew. Classic stuff that I'm glad I've listened to, but not something I'd revisit.
Not Fade Away is one of my favorites. The influence of Buddy Holly is huge. Not an album I want to flip on regularly but it’s clearly important to Rock and Roll
7/10, buen album, entiendo pq la gente le excitava tanto en su momento, tiene canciones divertidas
The lyrics are pretty dumb and the songs a bit repetitive, but they basically invented the boyband so you've gotta respect the hustle at least a bit.
Some great songs, a good album for its time, but the backing vocals annoy me a bit
Crusty debut from Buddy Holly and his Crickets. It contains some truly great tracks such as That’ll Be That The Day and Not Fade Away that are true mainstays for all rock n roll time but most of the other songs are not that great and tend to be slathered with super old fashioned and unnecessary Bing Crosby barbershop backing vocals that act as a dead weight to these songs that were already kinda dull and sleepy to begin with. Worth checking out for the famous hits and then applying bug spray to the rest.
Iconic. Foundationof everything. Unfortunately a little dated
Oldie music very nice. That’ll be the day rocks.
3.8/5
Def makes me wanna hit the sock hop and boogie.
Well, you can hear why this was so important to early fans of rock and roll. Buddy Holly really does set the template for the genre as it develops; the Fender Strat, nerdy guys playing rock, the use falsetto and verbal ticks (including a surprising amount of growl in his vocals), the tragic early death, and the deluge of posthumous cash-in releases. This is the one Crickets album released in his lifetime (in a time when singles were far more important), and it contains a few absolute classics, but not all of the must-hear Buddy Holly tracks (curse Dimery and his allergy to greatest hits compilations). There is some filler too, but with 12 songs in 25 minutes, it whips along at a cracking pace and doesn't allow time for boredom. I'm all for albums that don't overstay their welcome. Buddy Holly has become so stylized in his rock martyrdom that he is more often remembered as a symbol (like the Weezer song or Don Maclean's American Pie or his 'cameo' on The Young Ones: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z0nK6dlbfmU ) but actually listening to the album reveals songs that are energetic and well crafted, enthusiastically and muscularly performed and really compelling. You can dance to it. No wonder the Beatles et al. were all influenced by him. What would Buddy have accomplished in the long term? Hard to say. But his records are well worth listening to. But I would still recommend a greatest hits compilation over this album.
Some 50s rock n'roll bangers, but I wouldn't listen to the album front to back again, as it gets quite repetitive (even with its only ~25 minute runtime.)
Was hoping this would help give context or insight into fuckin costello’s deal, but no such luck
uhhh
Decent tunes that were much improved by other artists as covers.
OK, Buddy Holly. A bit outmoded for me, but I quite liked it anyway.
First time listen via streaming
Fun! Not something I would loop necessarily, but a nice change from days of post-punk (sorry men who can't sing nation)
Only 25 minutes😮
A little repetitive but all good
Very pleasant album
Best: Oh Boy! Worst: n/a Liked songs: 58%, 7/12 Light 3 Perfect example of "its just a vibe." Its hard to rate something so old, especially in comparison to albums released when music had had time to develop. With that said, its still a pretty fun listen, though it does take a while to get used to the sound. Also pretty hard to ignore the influence Holly, and by extension this album had on the music scene as a whole. Pretty solid album all around.
Very simplistic 50s pop songs. Background music really
I can hear why other people like this... but 50s music is NOT my thing.
Not bad. Some familiar tunes
Woah is this guy a weezer reference?
Holly’s influence cannot be denied, and this more than earns its place on the list, but these 50s albums do not hold up. Not Fade Away and That’ll Be the Day are all time classics.
“Chirping.” Golly gosh mister, these crickets really do chirp don’t they? At least they knew not to make 2 hour albums back then. Also, big update, the men on this cover are all under 22 years old from what I researched. This looks like a reunion of the fathers at a wedding party. Is this a gay love song? “Oh boy, the world can see, you were meant for me.” Progressive 50s slay. Repetitive and a little silly but it was fun. Not fade away had to be in Mafia II. Great game. Anyway. This song pops pretty hard. Jumps out at you, but runs out of ideas after a minute or so. A little uhh “forceful” with his “love” too. This guy is pining for some love, man. Another fine little love song. Not great though. Fine as in mediocre. Man, another one just fades by. It’s not keeping me and the lyrics are too same-y. Weak men cry eh? Well while that archaic belief may be forgiven, this song is better than the last few. A little bid more sad. A little more stark. Good one. “Tell me how” these are different songs. They’re the same. Oh god this one is so good. Rips. The big hit but it’s damn near perfect. Catchy, mournful, confident. I’m just listing RYM tags now. Whatever. Beauty of a song. Another fine song. Holy hell you were an hour late for a date and she left with another guy???? Man. You were an asshole, but I think you dodged a bullet here, brother. The crickets are back here sounding like Migos with the call and response ad libs. Pretty catchy one. Not bad. BAH BAH BAH BAH BAH BAH BAH BAH BAH. That was fun. Call me the 4th cricket pal. Nobody is going to call me “the fourth cricket.” That’s the real tragedy here. Last night. A pretty sweet love song. This one stands out as one of the better songs here to me. The boys are hitting the “BAH BAH BAHs” super hard, and Buddy is once again singing about love and crying. The formula works. The operatic church lady vocals finish off what was considered a pop song. Wild. A pretty lame Elvis style closer. Not my speed. In and out in 25 minutes. Hell yeah. Good work fellas. Leaves me time to go listen to Buddy Holly by Weezer. The true aficionado’s pick for Buddy Holly based music. Buddy Holly and the crickets did indeed chirp, and while a lot of this was teeny bopper silliness, there were some excellent songs in here delivered by a charismatic and interesting vocalist with a capable backing band. I smiled for much of it, mostly hearing how quaint the pop music of the day was, but it did deliver punch when it counted. The band may look like children who have worry lines over a pending divorce settlement but hey, the 50s were tough on everybody I suppose. The music, however? Not too shabby. 2.5-3 HIGHLIGHTS: It’s Too Late, That’ll be the Day, Last Night
25 minute album and it blazes through! I enjoyed it overall.
It’s very chirpy and it’s nice they didn’t overstay their welcome with a nice short album. Overall nice to listen to but really can’t tell you any standout singles.
Not my style, but sounded alright and fun. Nothing in particular stood out. Maybe I was distracted but everything kind of blended together.
Reminds me of Frankie and Benny’s
love me some buddy holly

oldies
hard to argue with a 25 minute album
I get it has an important role in music history but not a 5/5 for me.
Listening to Buddy Holly makes you want to hit the sock hop and get a milkshake after. It’s very saccharine. It’s all a bit samey, but it’s enjoyable enough to listen to. Allegedly very influential although it’s harder to hear than for some other very influential records of this time - it just sounds like Buddy Holly. 6.5/10
Funny, old time listening. Over almost as soon as it started.
Pretty fun, perky album. Gets tedious fairly fast but still a decent one
The hits are the hits but I didn't find the rest of it that remarkable on first listen.
It was ok
This is a very simple album like so many from this time but paves the way for the experimentation to come from numerous artists to I guess arrive at where we are today and for that I love it. Some of the tracks a great and some are a bit weaker but overall I really enjoyed it.

Enjoyed it but would not put it on repeat.
was lache lekker kort
Overall: 6/10 The songs get a little repetitive but they're still really fun! Buddy Holly's personality really shines through in his vocals. Fav Song: Oh, Boy! Least Fav Song: An Empty Cup (And a Broken Date)
An OG for whiteboys, 50s Weezer. That'll Be The Day is an amazing song.
I fully expected to hate this. It was poppy, doo-wop rock and it was fine. I didn’t hate it at all really. This was so much better than early Beach Boys, it was still kinda cheese but nowhere near as cheese as early Beach Boys. 3 stars
I was expecting to hate this but was pleasantly surprised. It has a nice sound and the song styles are varied and interesting. Buddy Holly has a good voice. All around not bad. 3/5
Was never really a fan of 50s rock but there's something comforting about this stuff, whether it's the toe tapping faster songs or the ballads and their backing vocal harmonies. There's something about the legend of Buddy Holly too. Favourites: Maybe Baby, Tell Me How, That'll Be The Day, Last Night
Short and sweet and lots of fun. We are all standing on the shoulders of giants.
Songs with upbeat, snappy rhythms I liked best.
I know it is important, influential and at the time revolutionary but as a piece of music now it is not something I care about.
this day 5 album cover is a 5/5. the "chirping" crickets? the guitars looking photoshopped? these guys squinting into the sun just like me? plus, every song under 3 minutes? amazing. is 'oh boy' a secret gay anthem? i know that's an idiomatic non-vocative 'boy', but what a fun ambiguity for our modern age! 'not fade away' must be a single because i know it. it's just OK. 'it's too late' is a highlight. very chill. and "please don't make me weep" is an eternal lyric. overall pleasant background music, i do like their sound but nothing especially grabbed me.
A blast from the past but all good tunes ! 3*
A pretty good album from the 1950's.
Okay this was fine. Could it be that buddy holly got there first? I doubt it. It was just nothing new. And I would’ve given this 2/5 if it weren’t for the few good bits
Obviously, this sounds very dated and like a novelty record these days, but I guess you have to take that into consideration when rating it. It's not something that I'd go back to, but it was alright.
very teen beach movie vibes, not really my thing tho but i can appreciate it
the importance of Buddy Holly and the Crickets to the history of rock music cannot be overstated. across an astonishingly brief recording career, Holly set the template which a host of rock music's earliest superstars modeled their own recordings and live acts after, from John Lennon and Paul McCartney (who named their band after an oblique reference to the Crickets) to Bob Dylan and The Rolling Stones and on and on. unfortunately, for my ears here in 2024, I appreciate Holly's music more for what it means to music history, rather than on its own musical terms. for me, it mainly comes down to the very silly backing vocals, which were the style at the time, but often feel like they actively intrude upon the overall musical texture. apparently, there's a newer release of this album that nixes the back-up singers, and I wonder if I'd like it any more without them. the songs themselves are also pretty typical early rock & roll fare; having just listened to Revolver two days ago (an album that released 9 years after this one), it's incredible to think that this genre would evolve at such a rapid pace! the highlight here is "Not Fade Away", with its variation on the Bo Diddley beat, but tracks like "Oh, Boy!" and "That'll Be the Day" can't be ignored. the influence of these songs on the early work of band like the Beatles and Stones is readily apparent, which makes this a really interesting historical document. those of us in the Current Year are definitely spoiled by the advances of generations of musicians that have come before. landmark albums in this vein often get hit with the "dated" argument, but remember that, at one point, this was the shape of rock to come! this was one of the first albums to feature the modern rock band instrumentation, which blows my mind, even if the music doesn't always do the same. strong 5/10.
My parents generation
Solid collection of some great songs. Still stands out.
Nearly 70 years old! Simple, basic rock and roll and an enjoyable listen.
Very good for the late 50s.
I can see why this would have been really popular at this time
This was kind of boring but I get the influence and innovation of the time.
So difficult to rate an album as influential as this over 60 years later. It’s almost impossible to listen to this with fresh ears as the template it laid has been used in rock ever since. I can almost imagine what it would have been like to drop the needle and hear ‘oh boy’ for the first time as a teenager. Can appreciate the songs on here even if they are a little dated.
Hard to rate. Enjoyable enough but nothing I would choose to listen to. Decent for it's time though. Low 3.
So this album was good, but 12 songs of this style of music was a bit much for me and I was happy when it was over. Oh Boy is the best song on the album. The other two well known songs, That’ll Be The Day and Maybe Baby, are good too. I like Buddy Holly’s voice and I’m sure some of the things he was doing were pretty revolutionary for the time. He seemed to be a creative guy and his signature style is actually pretty cool in a very adorably nerdy way. For the most part it was an enjoyable album.
I like it. 3/5 feels a little mean, but it definitely isn't quite 4/5 material. As a massive Beatles fan, it's fun hearing their influences. You can totally tell that the Beatles, and John in particular, were massively influenced by Buddy Holly & The Crickets, down to the name. The best songs on this album, imo, were better than some of the worst early Beatles songs, but it's still pretty clear that the Beatles were way better. This was a good, fun album, but nothing that will blow your mind, especially given that it came out nearly 70 years ago.
The "Horny" Crickets
I respect Buddy Holly for being a pioneer in many ways, and I think this album aged quite well for such an outdated genre of music. It was a fun, simple, and quick listen though it did kind of lose me towards the end. Several songs were really catchy, like 'Maybe baby' or 'That will be the day'. I'd listen again to this. 3.5 stars
Lovely songs that all are about the same thing and sound the same. 6/10
I don't even want to call this classic this is just pure rock & roll. love this. I know what Buddy Holly sounds like so had an idea of what this could sound like but never sat down to really listen. Some good rock & roll.
Songs are very short, fairly simple. Nice to listen to if it was on, but didn't hear anything I'd make a point to come back for.
Earworm after earworm!
Blueprint for rock and roll to come. I disliked the usage of "bop bop" baking vocals but it was a product of its time.
I get that it was influential and probably made the teens go feral back in the day but I'm eating it on how it holds up today. It's not bad by any means but there's a lot that's much better. 2.5/5
Enjoyed it but it did't blow my mind. Probably very influential in the 50s however!
That was cute.
Rock and roll history
Rock
Inoffensive, lovely and short 50s thing.
It’s a 50’s rock n’ roll album. It’s got the “doo-wap” backing vocals and all the high energy legally allowed in the late half of the decade. It is everything that represents 50’s rock n’ roll. Just one problem: I don’t really like 50’s rock n’ roll. I don’t hate it. It’s just not my cup of tea. It’s all hokey and cheesy to me. But the trade off is that the albums from this period are usually short, so they are not the worst. I cut the album some slack because it is influential and Buddy Holly is one of the most revered tragic figures in music history. And I did enjoy the softer songs. Favorite track: Not Fade Away Other hits: That’ll Be The Day, It’s Too Late (I’m not putting Oh Boy here, too cheesy for me)
I feel like I don't know enough about this era of music to know if this album is good
I liked it, but probably won't come back
With a couple catchier exceptions, this was a pretty paint-by-number 50s rock and roll album to me. Repetitive, short tracks made for an efficient album, but not much to revisit for me. Notable Tracks: - Oh Boy! - That'll Be The Day - Last Night 5/10
***An ok album
I liked this, loads of tracks that I recognised and some that influenced the likes of the Beatles. Of it’s time but fun.
3☆/5 10.03.2024
That'll Be The Day! I'm pretty sure Buddy Holly wrote that song off an old spaghetti westernfilm. Where the protagonist'a catch phrase was That'll Be The Day. So Buddy Holly too that phrase and wrote a whole song around it. Kind of cool. This record was pretty decent. Above average to its contemporaries.
meh
The album's alright, but I spent most of the time thinking about how Holly died so young and wondering what his career would have looked like in the 60's. He obviously had talent, but it would have been so interesting to see him let loose more.
Fun, but a lot of Buddy Holly
Not much to say. About as classic as classic rock gets. *Heard before
I acciedently rated the wrong album when trying to rate this........ Roxy music I didn't listen to you.... Buddy holly yall are a vibe ily
All the songs sound the same
It was what it was. It's probably too dated to be reviewed properly.
Fun. Old.
Short and sweet. This is cute.
Low expectations which were slightly exceeded. Not one that will stick with me in the long term, but fun for a listen through.
That's not my taste in music - But good old Rock'n'Roll
3.1 1x catchup 9/26, listened partially prior -- cool old school rock
Interesting 50s record. Quite fun to listen to Buddy Holly. Not my decade, though.
It's wild that most of my cultural history starts with this era of music and all it really is is country western with a dancable drum beat behind it. Seems like it's kind of bridging those two genres in a way that I found the first Britney spears album did... Poorly.
Pretty enjoyable
Being one of the first rock and roll albums, it's very simple by today's standards. That said, I like the sound. He took some getting used to but once I clicked with Buddy Holly's unique voice I was into it. It's a really short album at only twenty-five minutes long, and none of these songs are longer than two and a half minutes, so it's just a really short and sweet piece of rock history. The Vibe: It's prom night, 1958. Your two biggest concerns are scoring some liquor and a nuclear war with Russia. Life is good.
I know Bob & Jane used to slow dance their asses off in the house to this after the milkman came.
Favourites: Not Fade Away That’ll Be The Day Rock Me My Baby I can appreciate how Buddy Holly and the Crickets contributed to the spread of rock n’ roll and influenced a new generation of musicians. The guys seemed cool.
High-octane old school rock & roll with 4-5 slow jams sprinkled in. Highlights: "Oh Boy!", "Not Fade Away", "Maybe Baby", "That'll Be the Day"
3.5
"That'll be the day" is wel aanstekelijk.
Not bad, pleasant enough but sounds quite old now 5/10
Twisty, jumpy, catchy. Not bad if you like 50's music. 6/10
short and sweet !
The second guy looks like Reagan. This is hard to judge -- I LITERALLY just listened to the Beatles' Revolver, and I feel like these 50s groups walked so the Beatles could run and fly. It's very much the predecessor of a lot of great rock 'n roll. 3* I loved the very simple percussion in Not Fade Away. Highlights: that'll be the day (only song I knew of Holly's and it still holds up)
It’s ok….
Not bad. Don't know if I'd listen to it again unless I was seeking out oldies.
The 1950s isn't my favorite decade for recorded music, as I often struggle to connect with the era's songs despite being familiar with many of them. That being said these are great songs from a songwriting standpoint point and the recordings sound great considering the limited technology of the time. Buddy Holly's talent as a singer is undeniable, and I can appreciate the lasting impact he and this album have had on music. “Not Fade Away” is a standout for me because the drums sound like it’s a suitcase and hi hats which gives an interesting texture. I kept waiting for “All I Have To Do Is Dream” then once I looked it up I realized that’s The Everly Brothers, I always thought it was a Buddy Holly song.
This album sounds old now but was probably brilliant to dance to back in the day
I knew a couple of songs off this one, but that’s about it. Interesting to think of how this may have been received in 1957.
Didn’t mind this album at all. Has some real toe rappers on there..
Lässig, eingängig, auf den Punkt. Groovy und aus heutiger Sicht harmlos.
I like the vibe and it's very cool and retro but I don't think I'd ever seriously listen to this kind of music
A bit boring but ok for background music
This is one of those albums where you absolutely need to understand the context of the era in which it was released. The music is mediocre at best, but considering what popular music mostly consisted of at the time it was an important piece of game-changing innovation.
It's fine. Probably very good for the time.
That'll be the day
Iconic and fun.
solid
There are several songs that I enjoy, and I would give it 3 1/2 stars if I could. Feels like a collection of songs more than an album, especially the day after Abbey Road.
This can scratch that oldies itch!
I wasn't looking forward to this, as it's not my favourite era of music, but I enjoyed the nice harmonies, and, of course, many tunes that I've been hearing all my life. Looking at his writing contributions to the album, I've also newly thought about how absolutely tragic it is that he died at 22. We can only imagine what a 32 year old Buddy might have been writing by 1969, for instance. How very sad.
Meh. Not bad at all. Just not really my thing.
A solid ‘50s rock n roll album that just gets very repetitive and doesn’t do much for me. Less than half an hour though and pretty good for it’s time though so no complaints
If you ignore the occasional creepy lyrics this is normal fun 50s music. Stand-out: Rock Me My Baby
Buddy Holly, the Rebel
Trail blazer
Thoroughly enjoyed this one!
Feel as though I'm being harsh with the rating but the tracks are all too familiar from wedding DJ "mega-mixes" for me to feel any great emotion, as ground breaking as the album no doubt was
Puppy love ballads Of old time rock n roll fame With jaunty good vibes
How far music has come. What a time capsule.
Your grandparents will love it, I merely appreciate it as a historical artifact.
Lovely and nice, not the thing I would listen to intentionally, but still
+: Oh, Boy!, Maybe Baby, It's Too Late, That'll Be the Day, I'm Looking for Somebody to Love, An Empty Cup (And a Broken Date), Send Me Some Lovin', Rock Me My Baby +-: You've Got Love, Tell Me How, Last Night -: Not Fade Away 5,5/10
Well that's a classic 50s album for ya!

Quite possibly the most accessible music from this era. I feel that, with this album, Buddy Holly informed the Beach Boys and created higher quality, better-produced early pop-rock than the Beatles’ early releases later on. He’s possibly the only artist that doesn’t turn me off with the nasally country twang that verges on a yodel. If you asked me to pick between Holly and Presley to slip into a desert island backpack, Buddy wins hands down. That said, the 40’s barbershop quartet tones of the background vocals are a slight distraction; there’s nothing “chirping” about those crickets, but I suppose it is a sign of the times. Thankfully, the slight distortion on the rhythm guitar helps make up for that. Finally, I hate weepy pop ballads, but those on this album are bearable due to Holly’s charismatic vocals. Some of these songs are crying out for a guitar solo, though. How good could Buddy Holly have been through the electric sixties and seventies decades had he not taken that fateful flight?
While listening to this album, I can see the influence on The Beatles. The harmonies especially are reminiscent of an early Beatles album. The songs are pretty good but compared to rock and roll as we know it now, it is rather simplistic. Cool to hear Buddy Holly's music after listening to the song, "Buddy Holly" all the time.
Weird how low key sexually aggressive some of these songs are though I guess that tracks with the anecdote in the top comment.
3 good nostalgic rock n roll
Influential? Yes. But beyond the hits, there’s not much to love. Even the hits seem a bit simplistic via a modern lens.
All the songs sound the same, but that's no different from pop music today. Fun, upbeat, rock and roll music from the fifties.
Ikke helt min stil, men det er jo forsåvidt ikke dårlig... såååå 3
really just a novelty at this point but it’s a decent novelty
Rock and roll is just not my style of music.
could i write poetry to this? n
Mal ganz schön aber nicht soviel
Some great songs on here, nice short and snappy rock and roll record.
Okay but not BH best.
Exactly what I expected from Buddy Holly.
My dad is a Buddy Holly's fan, so I am familiar with this music. In fact I spent far too long trying get the percussive strumming pattern correct on "Not Fade Away". I like this album, but don't know if I would ever put it on, unless I was trying to make it like I was in the 50's.
Pretty good 50’s blues rock. Great harmonization, catchy riffs. Not my thing for all the time, but would listen again. 3/5
Good early rocker. Goes on too long, though
I understand the history and all that but really? I struggled to find anything in this of note and.... not sure whether this is a result of someone in a modern studio playing with the sound and trying to remove imperfections but via Spotify, it sounds hollow and lifeless. Three stars was generous.
I’m a sucker for corny songs about love. I really like the middle of this album. And of course there were some classics on there. But the songs about heartbreak and missing a lover got to me.
This is exactly what you’re thinking when you think of Buddy Holly: more or less wholesome rock(-abilly) in small, catchy doses. Makes you wonder what could’ve been.
There’s a few gems on here but overall this isn’t my music. I understand the relevance. And it’s crazy that a few of those songs from 1957 became major hits for other artists.
A couple snoozers on here, but also some straight heat that makes up for the lesser tracks.
Chirp chirp
This was interesting as a piece of history but not so much as a music listening experience
This is OK rock'n'roll, entertaining, a bit dated of course, hard to really evaluate the novelty with today's ears.
Definitely a fun listen. I can really hear the foundation of so many rock and roll groups to come.
I enjoyed this alot, but its weird, I think now I've listened to it I'm pretty content to never listen to it again. The few tracks I vaguely knew are amazing and the rest of still good...but its really too old and "pure" for me to rate any higher than a 3
A fun little rock and roll album that surpassed my expectations. Not completely my style but it was worth the 25 minute runtime, and I admire its influence on the genre and rock music as a whole.
Considering how old this is, it has actually aged better than I would have thought. It's well produced, and the lyrics still hold up surprisingly well. I still found it to be pretty dull, but I can't imagine that's an issue of this album being old.
Really hard to judge it 60+ years later. It's not bad, just very old.
Buddy Holly & The Crickets manage to encapsulate the sound of the '50s in typical rock'n'roll/rockabilly fashion and was the precursor to what has evolved over time to rock. Nothing really stood out here, but overall it was an ok listen. Best: Oh Boy! Worst: Last Night
Unlikely to enter my regular rotation, but it’s held up well and I enjoyed it.
when i first listening to this album, i was really turned off. i didn’t enjoy it at all, and i was ready to immediately give it a 2 and move on to the next. but after a couple full listens listens i started to get it. i still don’t think it’s amazing mind you but i would be able to understand why this album is on the list. i’ve never listened to buddy holly before and i’ve always heard about how important he was to music and how his death was “the day the music died” but i was a little disappointed on my first listen. i get it now, buddy had a one of a kind voice for his time and he knew how to use it. you can hear influence on surf rock, british invasion, and almost everything to come with rock music in the 60’s, which is why this album is so important. 3/5
Not my cup of tea. 2.5 ⭐️
The best word I can come up with to describe this is quaint. It has some high points, some low points, and its place in rock history. The biggest takeaway for me though is thinking just how much, and how fast music changed in the late 50's and early 60's.
- I know Buddy Holly is extremely influential to early rock music, though I will fully admit that I do not truly understand how this is the case. - Had a pleasant voice that could keep a catchy tune. Everyone knows "That'll Be The Day" and why not? It is fun.
Drøn kort sag! Jeg har spillet alt for meget Fallout til ikke at kunne værtsætte lyden. Jeg vil bare helst have ren crickets baggrund, uden for meget Boddy Holly.
Love original rock and roll (white people’s edition)
Ryan told me that there is no Elvis Presley without Buddy Holly. And there is no Buddy Holly without Bo Diddly. History!
It's ok. Is it a requirement that all songs from the 50s be about love or losing love? Seriously, like EVERY song. Songs are short and easy to listen to. First exposure to Buddy Holly so that's something.
Great upbeat Do wop rock and roll
Can't he write something other than a love song?
Nostalgie. Ein Wegbereiter. Für mich nix, was ich einen ganzen Abend hören möchte.
Rating: 6.5/10 Short and sweet. Although most of the songs sounded the same and had the same structure and style this was mostly fun to listen to from start to finish. Favorite songs: Oh Boy!, Maybe Baby, Tell Me How, That'll Be Day, I'm Looking For Someone To Love, Rock Me My Baby. Worst song: You've Got Love.
This album was fine. I know it's one of the first rock albums and was revolutionary at the time, but a lot of it just sounds dated now. It's fun enough, but it's pretty tame and the lyrics haven't aged super well. 3/5
This was nice and very retro. Doubt I’d revisit tho
Enjoyable bouncy pop without being produced to within an inch of its life. The simplicity here is its major USP, and those harmonies have echoed through rock and roll ever since. Some classic songs here, too. Not earth-shattering, but beautifully crafted (without being too polished) and fun.
Stripped back pure rock 'n' roll. This is very short and sweet. There's an innocence throughout. The songs are pretty much standards these days. They show that you don't need the technology to create something special.
pleasant and quite fun
About as inventive as I can expect an album from 1957 to be. Nothing really bad about this one, but there was also nothing special about it.
Might be a record for shortest album at a mere 25 minutes, was able to sneak it in before a meeting. Some pretty groovy guitar with the classic 50s backing vocals of the Crickets. Would not listen again but happy I did once to hear some Buddy Holly.
Concise, catchy, and at the cutting edge of the rock and roll revolution that was coming.
I enjoyed the guitar playing on this one
It was all great and I'm sure it was groundbreaking at the time. But I think it was so influential that it just doesn't sound special anymore. It was all good. Maybe I'll listen more and it will grow on me.
This was a solid 3 for me. I could tell it was really influential and popular for its time, but is probably too dated for me to enjoy super regularly. I did like hearing "Not Fade Away", which I've previously only heard done by the Grateful Dead.
This is one of my dad’s favorites. Easy listen, upbeat.
I’m sure this was a boo back in the day. 105.5 oldies vibes for sure. Not a bad album, just suffering from being so old
Sehr 50er
Oh, boy...
This was fine. It’s obviously dated, but still easy to listen to.
I've never been a big Buddy Holly fan, but I can recognize his pioneering influence on some bands I love. The songwriting didn't blow me away, but it's still a fun listen.
cool album. never been a huge fan of early rock and roll, but i can see why buddy holly was such a big deal.
Not my favorite.
i mean i obviously appreciate how important this album is, and it has some real bangers, but it's just not something I'm gonna be listening to on a regular basis. at only 25 minutes it's short and sweet but there are still songs i just don't care about. 5/5 for deserving a spot on the list, but 3/5 in my heart
short and fun to listen to
I don't really enjoy this era but understand the influence it had
Hard to hear it for what it was in its era, but overall enjoyable.
I think if the barbershop-like backing vocals weren't there, this album would sound more timeless. But with those vocals it's squarely old-timey.
A couple irrefutable classics, with a bunch of others that -while solid and listenable- are more just products of their time.
Quaint to the point of almost seeming gimmicky - until you remember this is 1) defining music for the era and 2) inspiration for so many other artists of that era. Ultimately not my thing, but can appreciate the importance of this regardless.
Songs to roam the wasteland to
What a pioneer and so influential and what a tragic loss just think of what could have been! And now with that out of the way, I think I'm well within my rights to assess this music with ears from 67 years later: it should be on Diamond City Radio. I see myself shooting Boston's Super Mutants to 'Rock Me My Baby'. Outside of that? Eh.
Buddy Holly isn’t really very appealing to me. However, his songs are catchy and I can see why he was so popular for his time.
Nice listen. 3/5
Hmmm 4 white guys on a static blue background...where have I seen this before?
I can’t believe that these were the homies dissing my girl. Short and sweet with a couple songs I knew, a couple more good ones, and the rest of them. Hard to really say I love something this old as more than a novelty.
It's great to hear the many of the tracks on the radio as one offs and interesting to see how the album is basically singles. It just feels so underpowered today. There is no doubt about the significance of the artist and that alone raises the rating.
R'n'r en estado puro
Next time I’m bringing my best gal to the sock hop I’m playing this one
its classic rock and it sure sounds like it. good couple of classics that remain timeless (That'll be the Day in particular) but overall it really is just a product of its time. I'm sure some midwest diner in a cornfield town still plays this album on a jukebox frequently.
The music your grandpa finger-banged your grandma to. That’s real! He told me and then made me smell his fingers. It was gross
Great uplifting album!
Simpáticos..que se yo.
It was worth a listen
There was a time right after graduating high school where Stevie, Harry and myself had gotten into some specific movies and music. This was also when I had my epic three trip graduation summer where we went to Illinois and celebrated at Uncle Tom's cabin (no relation) and Harry and the Pankow's were there. From there, and I might mix this up, but Harry flew out to Colorado for a week and then we all flew back to Georgia and hung out there for the 4th, and then I went to Texas with Dad. The point being, this album starts with one of those songs we had burned onto a CD, Oh Boy!, so all those memories flooded back. I think that is one of my favorite things about music, that the sounds can transport you to specific places in time, memories you might have forgotten that come back crisply (or however we chose to remember those moments). Buddy Holly is a king, Dad loved him, I think he still does, but this was that time when all those nerdy white boys made sweet songs to court the ladies. I wonder what Buddy Holly would think of Metal or Rap music. He even says in You've Got Love "two hands for holding". To quote Dewey Cox, that's what the devil uses hands for. I also find it interesting how this type of music frequently gets used now for horror music. I'd be curious why that is, something about an old timey song indicating something isn't right, or something terrible is happening or about to happen. I know not much of this has anything to do with the content of this album, but what more do you need to know? A couple horny dudes decided to get chicks the only way they knew how.
Notable tracks: Maybe Baby, Not Fade Away
B- Oh, Boy! 3 Not Fade Away 3 You've Got Love 3 Maybe Baby 3 It's Too Late 3 Tell Me How 3 That'll Be The Day 3 I'm Lookin' For Someone To Love 3 An Empty Cup (And A Broken Date) 3 Send Me Some Lovin' 3 Last Night 3 Rock Me My Baby 3 I look just like Buddy Holly, and you're Mary Tyler Moore. I don't care what they say about us anyway, I don't care about that.
Upbeat and fun! Swinging tunes. Enjoyed on a run
Some great songs.
Medium weight
50s Bop
I see why it was popular but it hasn't aged well.
Lot of filler on a short album. Understand the impact, though. Favorite Track - Rock Me My Baby
It’s interesting to go back and revisit music from the ‘50s. It’s so saccharine that it feels almost alien to current music. Just guys singing about things they love. Oh boy! 3/5
In a nutshell: quick and poppy. The problem with reviewing this album is that it was released in the era when the LP format was still new. It sounds like a compilation and the songs sound mostly the same. But just like The Everly Brothers and BB King, Buddy Holly and The Crickets are important to music cannon. They inspired the next generation of musicians. I might come back to this album closer to the end of the project to re-rate. Overall: 5/10
Some classics there but a lot of songs sound the same
This album just feels so simple compared to what we listen to now.
Still good.
Eh, it’s Buddy Holly, and not my favorite Holly. 26 minutes across 12 songs goes pretty fast. I have this on infinite playlist. So when the last song is followed by Chuck Berry’s Johnny B Goode, and it’s the best things far and away I’ve heard I. The last 27 minutes, it’s telling me to stop trying to justify Chriping as anything I’d come back to.
Buddy has a great voice and there are some great moments throughout this album, but it's a bit too plain for modern day rock. That being said I get why his music has lived on for so long.
Sounds of a bygone era
Sure it was good at the time
decent. while I recognise the importance of albums like this in the development of modern music, this one does not hold any sort of timelessness. while it's not bad, the album drags even at it's 25 minute runtime because the song are just all so similar... sorry 3/5
50's rock and roll doesn't really do much for me. Aside from the slight Fallout 3 radio mod nostalgia, it's decent inoffensive songwriting. The last track has some really cool rhythms I wish they'd visit more. It's good for what it is, very much commercial music as a product of its time.
Muito bom, meio repetitivo mas não enjoa tanto quanto imaginei. Fica claro que é meio datado pois as musicas tem a mesma duração e a mesma temática.
👍🏻
Respect for helping to lay the groundwork for more modern rock music (and for Buddy Holly's contributions in particular), but this mono, minimalist, rockabilly album is not my bag. This transported me back to being held captive to this type of music while being driven around in my nana's Honda as a child. I now have a craving for a nice juicy diner burger, fries, and a milkshake though...boy howdy, do I! Fun Factoid from Wikipedia: *The "Chirping" Crickets is the debut album from the American rock and roll band the Crickets, led by Buddy Holly. It was the group's only album released during Holly's lifetime. Standout Tracks: Oh Boy!, That'll Be The Day, Rock Me My Baby
idk man. they seem so happy, but its boring after the 5th song dude.
Wow from a different time. 25 min run time and all. Not sure it held up great but fun and I would have been been jamming to it in the 50’s.
It's been a while since I listened to 50's music, so this was a nice little trip down memory lane. Surely has that one of a kind atmosphere in the music at that time.
This is like a really weird form of rock it kinda confuses me I like the way their voices mix. Favorite: Maybe Baby Least favorite: in a way all of them 3.6/5
solid album from one of the early architects of rock and roll.
Short and pleasant.
Just for Stephen :) Almost too country for my taste, but it's got some nice bluegrass elements that I'm a fan of
I mean it was what I expected. Important for music history, sure. Kinda nice, kinda boring.
What's not to love???
Dosent do enough to stand out as an all time classic or even a must listen, there’s some good songs here, but it remains a product of its time. Musically it’s impressive but it lacks the funk that carried over lyrically challenged albums I’ve previously heard. Nothing here really caught me. Wouldn’t go back, but nothing here was bad either. I c
Album was very fun, maybe not normally my cup of tea but listening to music of that time is always a good time. they were really so jolly huh, I just find it funny to think about what they'd think of modern music. Not in like mean to either way, it's just very different
white
Nice melody creepy lyrics
Golden oldies
Boy did they struggle with love back in the day. At least they were upbeat about it. Happy music, depressing lyrics.
The (early) Beatles drew a lot of inspiration from The Crickets, and you can tell. The album has a classic rock and roll feel — generic at times, possibly an instance of “Seinfeld is Unfunny.” It’s quick, so I'd say it may be worth a listen.
Decent
Fun little album, full of classic early rock-n-roll riffs and 6/8 rhythms. Pioneering, but not one I really need to hear again
Obligatory note about understanding how influential this is but I just don't enjoy it
Had a couple groovy tunes, I liked it but it didn't blow me away by any means. Enjoyed how happy, fast, and fun it was.
nice and peppy pop
FAVO: Last Night
Now here is an album that I'm glad was on the list, even if it's not one I will be listening to over and over again. At a time when guitars were just going electric, it took people like Buddy Holly to push the envelope and create new sounds. You can hear the influences on so many later rock acts.
Alright. I liked the second half of it more.
Trica laganica
okay.
Good as a historical document, not very interesting otherwise.
Liked it. Great Oldie Touch you can listen
‘Not fade away’ gives it 3 stars easy ✌️ This is apart of rock ‘n roll canon so you have to give it full respect. Not my favorite but a foundational album worthy of understanding and appreciation.
Classic for me. Loved the greatest hits as a kid but listening to it now is a little more tedious when going beyond the hits.
A very feel-good kind of album. Short and sweet, with a couple catchy singles. To me sounds kind of formulaic, but that does make sense. Feels sort of like a paddleball hung so that the ball is bouncing upside down on the string.
