Reviews (page 11 of 14)
First time fully listening to this overall a great album with a handful of songs that I just can't stand namely wild honey pie. Blackbird and while my guitar gently weeps were highlights. I still am unsure if there's an arc that is trying to be constructed throughout the album here but it ends nicely.
Quality
Was really enjoying this album’s experimental work until John took it too far with NUMBA NINE. Everything else was very good, definitely could have dropped some other songs, like Wild Honey Pie and had it be a single disc. Overall, very enjoyable, will listen again. 4/5
Ive always loved this album hard to ignore the weird amount of total duds here though 4.5
It's the white album
It's the big one. I like it.
as tonally weird as "Tommy" but more accessible to me.
I remember discovering my dads Beatles vinyl back in about 1991 and this album was always a strange curiosity to me. It was really pretty different to everything else. A combination and great tunes (Gently Weeps, Blackbird) and oddities (Piggies, Honey Pie). I was put off by some and instantly loved others. Time has made appreciate it all collectively. A decent album but not anywhere near their best. I’d like to give it 3.5 but I’ll round it up to 4 because… well, because it’s The Beatles White Album.
What can I say that wasn’t said before? Honestly, this albums has really great songs. It production techniques showed a leap forward. It is a great musical milestone. However, I think that they could have cleaned the song list a little bit and come up with a single kick ass record. That would have been an A+
That's good.. but it's too much stuff to be all good and, in fact, it isn't
So longggggg. But definitely some bright points and influential in scope.
The good songs are fantastic and sufficiently outweigh the cringe / mediocrity of the bad to make this a 4.
Not my favorite but there’s an intimacy and a confidence that are really nice. Feels like this is making music especially for themselves, what they had inside wanting out. And it took until this listen to realize I’ve been playing Blackbird wrong.
Lastig, voelt wel alsof het veel invloed heeft gehad, voelt ook meteen een stuk moderner dan hun vorige album. Maar er zitten wel heel wat nummers op die een beetje meh zijn
I feel guilty giving it 4 as such as classic album, but that’s what it felt like.
What a bunch of strange dudes. Top notch.
It's a bloated mess but there's so much great stuff on here, and even the songs I don't like add so much character to the album that I honestly wouldn't change a thing. I can't give it a 5 in good conscience as it can be such a slog to listen to all the way through, but on the whole it's a stunning collection of songs
Amazing how all over the place this album is. Saying that I’m meaning it in the best way possible. Could do anything/any sound as a band and make it sound great. Had to check auto play hadn’t started a new album by a new band for Good Night. Belter Skelter (auto correct changed that and I’m not correcting it) Obla Di, While My Guitar my stand outs, with Blackbird one of my favourite Beatles songs ever
Not particularly of the experimental songs but man this album has some bangers
Ekkert nema dásemd, með dashi af fíflagangi. Elsk ❤️
Interesting musically, didn’t know where we were going one song to the next.
banger
This album is pretty good. There are some good songs, but my god is this album long. It just kept going and going, so it felt like the album had a ton of filler songs between the songs I enjoyed. Favorite song: While My Guitar Gently Weeps Worst song: Birthday Worst 8 minutes of noise: Revolution 9
It's quite strange, very unique (Doubly so back at the time of its release) and certainly not boring. Of course it has a place on this list, no doubt about that. I think I will eventually go back to it to listen through again, because it's certainly a great album, though I don't know if it'll be my favourite Beatles album. Favourite: Back In The U.S.S.R
Var á ferðinni og hlustaði ekki. Samt klassík sem ég geymi til betri tíma.
Good but inconsistent. One of my lower ranked Beatles albums
One of the better Beatles albums in my opinion.
This album is super eclectic! I've listened to it many times over 30 years and do enjoy it because it is ridiculous. Great!
Racist
It’s The Beatles, it’s great… but, I always thought there were too many weak, filler tracks on this. If they cut half the songs it’d have been perhaps the greatest album ever.
7/10. Okay, yeah, I see why this is their only double album. Feels like they stretched themselves a little thin, butter over too much bread and all that. Fortunately, the bread is still pretty good.
A frenetic and dizzying musical tug-o-war between all four Beatles. I enjoyed it, but there was a major lack of cohesion. Lyrically, thematically, musically, it just pushes and pulls every which way. The tension between Paul and John is palpable! Bless George Harrison for being able to get While My Guitar Gently Weeps included. And Paul for writing Blackbird. I know this album is touted as the high watermark of the Beatles career, but it’s just too jarring a listening experience for me. Still a good time, just one that yanks your chain a bit.
p156. 1968. 4 stars. This might sound like heresy, but there is a LOT of filler here. Trim that out and you would have a 5 star album. On the plus side, there is still more inventiveness and melody here than most bands manage in a 10 year career.
timeless classic but dont recommend listening to this at night because the second to last song will make you shit your pants
boy don't you just love the old stereo split the album being split into 4 does mean there's space for quite a few classics in there
Good. A few tracks were a bit meh but overall i liked it. I'm also into weird music so if you don't like that it's probably just an annoying listen half the album.
Otro disco fantástico de uno de los mejores grupos de siempre. Canciones muy básicos, pero muy pegadizas. Muy melódicas y bien construidas. Muchas siguen perdurando en el tiempo
4* Because of Blackbird
Revolver, Rubber Soul, Abbey Road, Sgt. Pepper i The White Album.
Why don't we fuck in the street! Little piggies
Brialliant.
Well-written album, great breadth of music. This album showcases what the Beatles are all about, writing catchy and fun songs. But nothing really hits you in a meaningful way.
Niet mijn meest favoriete album van de Fab Four, maar zeker in mijn aanzien gestegen.
It’s not the album I’d play to non-believers to convince them of the Beatles’ genius as there are a lot of songs on here that sound like jokes, or unfinished (both may be true, but usually in a good way). It might be the album that best displays the breadth of what they could do, though. In amongst some stone cold classics like While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Helter Skelter, Blackbird and Back in the U.S.S.R. there are some excellent John Lennon compositions (Happiness Is A Warm Gun, Dear Prudence, Glass Onion, Cry Baby Cry etc), and some genuine oddballs, just because it’s The Beatles and they could do what they liked. I remember being a bit underwhelmed when I first heard the album but now I find something new to enjoy with each listen. There’s some filler of course, but not as much as I first thought (and it’s part of the fun anyway). The first disc is great. 4.5
In 1967, The Beatles were focused on making cohesive albums rather than just focusing on singles. The result was Sgt. Pepper, and even down to the intricate album art, it was clear that The Beatles were putting a lot of time into recording and crafting complete albums. So how do you follow a monster like Sgt. Pepper up? You do the exact opposite! At least that’s what The Beatles thought. The White Album, as it has become known, is a double album released by the Beatles in 1968. The album consisted of many seemingly “loose” songs, thus there is no definite flow throughout the album. This throws a lot of people off. A lot of people also don’t like the “filler” tracks. Personally, I think many of the filler tracks are fun. I really love how the Beatles explored different musical styles throughout the record, such as folk, blues, proto-metal, and even avant-garde. Overall, this was a really fun listen and a great album, even if it isn’t as cohesive as their other efforts.
I fuck with this album hard
I really like that this whole thing is getting me to listen to the Beatles, I feel like I sort of know they're good and am aware of their big hits, bur to really take the time to listen to full albums is nice. Enjoyed this and found it kinda playful :)
Obviously one of the best with some of my fav Beatles on. Why don't we do it in the road is up there
This album shows the clear influence as it's all over the place. Blues, rock, psychedelia, etc While I don't prefer to listen to The Beatles, I can see why this album is so loved by critics
It's great, and I'm enjoyed. There are some classics songs and other new discovered.
It's hardly a hot take to say this is a sprawling masterpiece and that disc 1 is a lot more accessible than the more experimental disc 2. My personal preference tends to be for more concise albums, and there is a single album of pure bangers amongst the 30 tracks here. However, the weirder songs and 'grout tracks' really work here and are an essential part of the piece. Rating: 4.5/5 Playlist track: Back In The U.S.S.R Date listened: 13/09/22
Disc 1 almost perfect album but there’s a lot of misses on the 2nd
Pretty good until after helter skelter then hot garbage
Stórkostleg klassík. Mörg uppáhalds bítlalögin mín.
Some amazing tracks, some random tracks. But on the whole a great album!
It's a pretty long album at 30 tracks but was found it quite enjoyable overall.
Banger after banger
Not my favorite Beatles album but still very good.
The album where Paul is fixated on honey pies - the wild and domestic kinds - for some obscure reason. With 93 minutes this includes a plethora of first class Beatles songs: 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps', 'Happiness Is A Warm Gun', 'Blackbird', 'Revolution' to name some. But in all honesty it does also contain some fillers ('Wild Honey Pie', 'Why Don't We Do It In The Road?'), and I found side three to be actually quite weak. The record would probably have been stronger if Harrison had been allowed to get more songs in the final tracklist. My biggest surprise with this re-listen was that 'Revolution 9' was... not that bad? I actually quite enjoyed it, and they seemed like they were having fun.
What a great collection of songs
Pop, rock, 1968. One of the most famous album in the world by the most famous band ever. It contains huge masterpieces such as "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and "Helter Skelter" and a lot of other great tracks but it is probably not as cohesive like "Abbey Road" or "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band". In the end this is in my top 5 Beatles' albums, but not in my top 3.
I totally forgot how blues, americana folksy this album gets at certain songs (and then early heavy metal with Helter Skelter??? Amazing). The fiddle in Don't Pass Me By, the lyrics in ballad of Rocky Raccoon. Besides the fireside tunes, there's so many other catchy, goose-bumping songs on the White Album (While My Guitar Gently Weep, Dear Prudence). I get why it's always quoted as one of the best Beatles albums. I think it is, too. One of my favorite Beatles songs actually, Happiness is a Warm Gun, is on this album. On this listen, my standout song was Martha, My Dear. The White Album to me is like a pizza from your favorite place. It's always amazing, but you forget how so because you've been eating it for so long. Also, like tomatoes on pizza that came to Italy from China, and the pizza from Italy that made its way to the greasified USA version, the Beatles talent was taking the components of something already great (Chuck Berry's guitar, Motown records, etc.) and churning them into popular smashes. The White Album is a hit machine.
87/100: Much more filler than I was expecting listening to it in one go. I think this album gets a lot of praise because of the drama and turmoil going on amongst the Beatles behind the scenes, but I think for all of the groundbreaking songs on this album that possibly benefitted from that turmoil, just as many made their way on the album that probably wouldn’t have made it on earlier Beatles albums. I think this is the struggle in producing a piece of art as innovative as The White Album is, for every novel shot in the dark that lands (“Helter Skelter,” “Happiness is a Warm Gun,” and “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”) there are just as many, and sometimes more, that miss the mark entirely (“Revolution 9,” “Piggies,” “Why Don’t We Do It In The Road,” and “Honey Pie”). It might be unfair to hold that against the Beatles because that’s a part of the process of making good art—how can you know what will stick when no one has ever made music like this before—but I can think of many other innovative albums that are better coherent albums than this, hence the less than stellar review.
Very cool album and kind of crazy how many good songs are on the one album, quite enjoyed it but not something I would listen to a lot
i agree that this is an album that belongs on this list. some tracks are skippable, but the album as a whole is iconic. favorite track is good night.
It has good songs but a bit too long with a decent amount of filler. That said, I have listened to this album so many times that even the filler has grown on me a bit.
Can’t believe I never listened to this before. There are some true bangers on here, but they’ve been so overplayed that they sound cliche now. Suffering from success. The terrible terrible song “Revolution 9” keeps this album from being 5 stars.
16/29, 55%
Loved this album, so many iconic songs.
Overall pretty good! Hard to set aside the charles manson mystique around it
im a beetle slut so it's hard for me to rate any of their albums below a 4 but this one has some special tracks but it's also a bit all over the place because the band started having arguments at this point of time but still a solid album👍
Very decent and memorable experience. Classic Beatles album
I know that this album is regarded as one of their best, I didn't know it was a double album. I enjoyed and can see why The White Album is held in such high regard.
It's the Beatles.
A bit too sprawling and uneven to be counted as truly great, but credit where credit is due-the Beatles fearlessly throw everything at the wall to see what sticks, and most of it does. Even ideas that aren’t fully formed contain intriguing lyrics and melodies, showing just how far they’ve come as a band.
Didn't Helter Skelter inspire Charles Manson
It's the famous Beatles White Album. A record I've heard dozens of times during my life, and it's the typical double-album with double-album issues. There are some masterful songs on here, but also some songs I loathe with such a passion I could never rate it as high as some of the Beatles' other works than are just amazing albums start to finish. An album where I start skipping songs is just not worthy of 5*. Still, the album never gets boring and the Beatles play a wide range of songs and styles. Stay for: While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Happiness Is A Warm Gun, I'm So Tired, Julia, Helter Skelter, Long Long Long Skip every time: Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da, The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill, Rocky Raccoon, Honey Pie, Sexy Sadie, Revolution No.9
An extremely easy summary to write. The best songs on The White Album (e.g., Back in the U.S.S.R., Happiness Is a Warm Gun) make the album a firm 4, whereas the worst songs on it (e.g., Wild Hairy Pie, Good Night) prevent it from being a 5. Job done. Okay, I suppose I better look under the bonnet. After Sgt. Pepper cemented them as the most feted longhairs on the planet, the Beatles fled to India to to learn Transcendal Meditation and to try and comprehend their extraordinary position on the world's stage. Ringo returned to Blighty within a fortnight, because he was craving a nice, juicy steak after all that curry malarkey. Macca stayed a bit longer, and John and George longer still. George especially became further entranced with Indian culture, and the stay at Rishikesh saw his blossoming as a capable songwriter. The group wrote songs voluminously whilst in India, but the recording sessions in London proved highly trying. Their recently formed business Apple Corps sapped the Fabs' cash amid a series of failed projects. Along with this, the bandmembers had grown more distinct from each other artistically, fragmenting their previously unified vision of the band's direction. Ringo left for a period, upset at all the bickering and his apparent peripheral status within the band. With egos and hostility percolating in the studio, the bandmembers rejected George Martin's suggestion that they edit the album into a spliffing single album of the best songs from the recording sessions, and so came to pass the Beatles' double album. Oh, and Yoko had begun hanging out around the studio. There's that familiar challenge concerning the White Album, over what 15 songs you'd choose for a single-record edition of the White Album. I suspect that everyone would choose pretty much the same songs. To restate that, the White Album meanders wildly in terms of quality, but a consensus over which tracks are good became established rather swiftly. As such, the supposed innovations of the White Album have faded so much that the contemporary listener struggles to see the invention. Yes, I know that may seem comparable to that dismissal of Hamlet as a ropey old plot strung along with the mouldiest of clichés, yet I think that I not only can defend that position, but also argue that the White Album wasn't that innovative anyway. Take Helter Skelter, for instance. The standard assessment of Helter Skelter is that it's the song that forges heavy metal with Macca's declaration that he wanted to write a song as loud and dirty as possble. I humbly suggest that this is piffle. Jimi Hendrix had released the much louder, much dirtier, much heavier, much better Purple Haze the previous year. But no, fanboys insist that credit must go to the Beatles just because of those murders. Or what about the claim that the White Album is the first postmodern record? Without getting too abstract, one definition of postmodernism that consistently works is that it's the stuff that came after modernism. By that definition, rock n roll itself is a postmodern construction. Or for a more rigorous candidate, you have David Bowie and his band adopting the personae of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars to record The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders of Mars, an album telling the fable of the rise and fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. That's far closer in spirit to If on a winter's night a traveller. The White Album isn't postmodern just because the Fabs were too atomised to enact proper quality assurance. I recognise that I have only named two examples. I have written long enough already, and you don't need me cracking out the microscope to examine every instance of the White Album not being quite as novel as its reputation claims. Why not give it a go yourself? For starters. try tackling the role of pastiche on the album. And console yourself with the thought that innovation is not quite a virtue in itself: your bright idea of an onion milkshake will shock, but not because it's new. You can love the album even if it's not the Nikola Tesla of music. Anyway, in conclusion, just read the first paragraph again. I'm off for a kip.
Probably my favorite Beatles album.
I'll give this album 4 stars because it has some great singles, but I thought it was an incoherent mess that also had some mediocre tracks.
I mean it's Beatles isn't it. I've heard most of these songs before, but was still surprised by some bits, such as Revolution 9... I thought the album ended and I got some random psychedelic band on. Helter Skelter was much 'harder' than I remembered too.
Listened to the remastered 2009 version - some things seemed a little over produced so some sound took over the vocals
i was surprised to realize i had never listened to the white album all the way through. i enjoyed hearing many new songs! i wasn't expecting this amount of experimental music, though. this album recorded and released in 1968 definitely shows the year with its brand of experimental music. some songs were just weird, but others like "piggies" were charming enough to forget any eclectic aspects. this album demonstrates a more grown-up sound, different from the solid pop their beginning--which isn't to say one is better than the other. the hits on this album are unbelievable. memorable, catchy, delightful, beautiful. the album balances itself so nicely. "back in the ussr" starts you off high. the album bounces between sweet, somber, fun. george's "while my guitar gently weeps" is the scene stealer. "glass onion" contains throwbacks delightful for even a casual beatles fan. "blackbird" is a lovely, soft number, worthy of its hit status. "ob-la-di" and "birthday" are plain fun, undeniably. how can you not clap along with "bungalow bill"? the guitar on "helter skelter" goes so hard, and edges this album toward some harder rock. no two songs are alike! we end with "goodnight," a simple and gentle song i wasn't expecting for ringo but provides a perfect end to the album. we all know beatles' songs were not equally distributed through its four members, but george's songs are always delightful; this album is no exception. it's always a treat to listen to new george music. an album i was so excited for, threw me some surprises, and left me so satisfied. an album which its hype is so, so valid.
My 100th album on this project! And what an iconic one! This double album is packed with music! Not only that, but there is so much diversity and variation of styles from song to song. This album is interesting if for no other reason than that it's on the precipice of the 60s ending and the 70s beginning. Sounds from both decades permeate this album, showing just how influential the Beatles were on both decades. Helter Skelter is also a song I personally enjoy a lot, partially for this reason -- I love how McCartney just went full force on this song, his goal to make something loud and raw and "dirty". Not only did he achieve that, but it's obvious that the song would inspire heavy metal sounds of the 70s. Other songs on this album (While My Guitar Gently Weeps) would go on to inform other definitive sounds of the 70s as well. I'll be the first to admit that I am not the biggest Beatles fan, and that a lot of what they do is lost on me. While I found this album to be great, I don't think the entire album is at the same caliber as the best songs off of the album; there was definitely some filler (thanks, Lennon). Nothing on the album is BAD, but not everything is downright great. That said, this is a good album for George Harrison, as it features his best Beatles song ever (and one of the band's best songs in general), While My Guitar Gently Weeps. Savoy Truffle is another easy standout from Harrison's side of the catalog, which also features on this album. An interesting album that, in my opinion, really challenged and pushed the state of music at the time. I would rank this album at about a 3.5, so I'm going to go ahead and round up to 4.
There’s some absolutely epic songs on here but man could the Beatles be weird sometimes
back in the USSR is very beach boy vibes. Each track has its own sound which I love
Wow, this makes me happy. I haven't listened to this album in decades. I used to listen to my dad's vinyl copy over and over as a kid. I still anticipate a skip about 1 min in on "I'm So Tired" where his record was scratched. I wasn't sure if this would hold up for me. In general, I don't love the Beattles. But there is so much to love about this album and it's not all nostalgia. So many of the songs have a heaviness, a gritty, bluesy feeling. Then some are just weird and goofy. It's a really fun album
It’s The Beatles. There’s a certain level of quality there. Too many filler songs hurts a record that has some all time great tracks.
Some of my absolute favorite Beatles tracks on this one. The range of sonic and lyrical experimentation here is astounding, and demonstrates how innovative the band could be once they dropped the pop focus. The use of early distortion tones is a key feature to note - my dad told me how the blown-out intro riff on 'Revolution' floored him at the time because nothing else before it had sounded quite like that. I do think this album falls a bit short of 5 stars as there's no hope of cohesion as a full LP given how many genres and styles exist alongside one another, but the highs are plentiful and represent the most exciting and out-there tracks of the Beatles' long career.
A sprawling epic pop rock adventure. Silly, engaging, rocking, light, heavy and more.
Took forever, nice to finally know what all the songs are.
En klassiker, mere eksperimenterende, stadig simpelt, både poppet og rocket
This album rates pretty high for me because it was one of the first ones I got on CD. That first side is just so strong, back to back to back killer tracks, although "Wild Honey Pie" is a bit of a filler. The second side has "Don't Pass Me By," which isn't bad for a first track by Ringo. Little heavy on the keys, making it feel very calliope-like. The third side doesn't have a real clunker, although Sexy Sadie is probably the one I like least of those, but it's still real good. Then there's side four. First off, I like the single version of "Revolution" that was released. I think it's much better than Revolution 1. I wish they had included it as a bonus on the remaster or something. Then there's "Revolution 9." Look, I get that they were experimenting with all different styles throughout the album. Sgt. Pepper is strictly an album of its time, but it opened up everyone to the possibility of doing more than just "rock and roll." The White Album is more malleable, much looser in form because of the experimentation. Having said that, "Revolution 9" is just... boring. Boring and too long. So I usually skip it. "Good Night" closes ou tthe album, and it's a bit too mich treacle. SO since I've skipped "Revolution 9" I usually skip that too. So there you have it. I've played this album so many times since it was one of my first CDs. But even so, there are still a few tracks I tend to skip, so as much as I have a fondness for it, I can only give 4 out of 5 because of those weak tracks.
There are definitely some lowlights on this album; how could you not have any with 30 songs? But give credit to the sheer vastness of the production - a double album with many good songs. Is it great? TBD. I call BS on those who criticized the lyrics for being too simple. There are a lot of double meanings and songs that you only truly understand if you think through it a lot. Side One is pretty solid though I've never really liked Ob La Di Ob La Da and the next two tracks dip (though I love the underlying meaning of lyrics in Bungalow Bill). Back in the USSR is still fun and Dear Prudence is beautiful. While My Guitar Gently Weeps and Happiness is a Warm Gun are songs that show the musicianship the Beatles lacked when they were younger. Side Two is a bit more of the same - so good to start, including I'm So Tired and Blackbird. And then it gets a little weird with Piggies through to Why Don't We Do it In the Road, though the first has some thought-provoking lyrics and when you know the back story behind the others they're more interesting. But the last two tracks pick it up again with two sweet pieces by Paul and John in I Will and Julia. Side Three is probably my favorite for its energy. Birthday is a joke but kudos to it being mostly improvised. And it is fun! Yer Blues is a solid blues attempt. Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey is a hidden gem for rock lovers or lovers of early Beatles. Helter Skelter, like Yer Blues, shows the Beatles virtuosity in being able to do something heavy, pretty damn well. If they ended after Side Three I'd say it's 5-star. Side Four makes things iffy. Revolution is a great song with the musical arrangement on the eventual single, not with the one on this album (still good because it's lyrics are awesome). Honey Pie and Savoy Truffle grow on you but both are a bit juvenile. Cry Baby Cry is pretty good, but not as good as stuff on the other sides. Revolution 9 is terrible. Good Night sounds like the end to some cute kids movie; it's actually kind of endearing. Maybe I'm overweighting Side Four or some of the other so-so tracks but after an internal struggle I landed on 4-star.
If I had to pick one word to describe The White Album, it would be UNEVEN. The White Album has some of the Beatles' best songs, a bunch of ok but generally uninspiring (and often derivative) songs, and then some songs they should have left on the cutting room floor (e.g., Wild Honey Pie, Piggies, and Revolution 9). Basically, if they were to take the best songs and a few of the ok songs they'd have a great single album. Maybe the Beatles were over-convinced of their greatness, but someone needed to tell them NO on making it a double album (sounds like George Martin tried unsuccessfully). If I were to pick which songs to turn into an amazing single album, this would be the track listing. I added Hey Jude and the single version of Revolution because they were recorded in the same sessions but only released as singles. I kept the order they used, except for adding Hey Jude. I'd probably find a different spot for Julia because it's just too mellow to have Blackbird followed by Julia. Similarly, Helter Skelter is a little stark following Mother Nature's Son: Back in the USSR Dear Prudence Glass Onion Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da (apparently a lot of people hate this, but I like it). While My Guitar Gently Weeps (Amazing song - of course, everyone should hear Prince's solo in the 2004 Rock Hall Tribute to George Harrison) Blackbird Julia (this is one of the ok ones I pulled in to fill up the single album) Birthday Mother Nature's Son (another ok one to fill the album) Helter Skelter Revolution (single version, but Revolution 1 is still good) Hey Jude (not on the album, but recorded during these sessions) Goodnight (always holds a special place for me because my son used to fall asleep listening to Jason Falkner's Bedtime with the Beatles and his version of Goodnight is magical). Total run time = slightly under 46 minutes. One great album, boys.
Some really great songs and some really weird songs.
I've listened to this album 10 000 times and I still can't remember anything about Long, Long, Long.
A wonderful Beatles album with a variety of songs. This album is long but being a fan of the Beatles it’s only appreciated. This album has a little bit of everything that made their other albums great. Obviously that means this one isn’t too cohesive or flowing but it doesn’t necessarily matter if you just want to hear more Beatles. Excellent album. 8.4/10
I've heard this one recently, so I will skip listening to it this time around. I feel like it's one of their least talked about records, despite it being so heavily praised. There's some great songs on here, but it's not all good. There's almost too much material here, so unless you already like The Beatles this won't do much for you. Easily a top 5 Beatles album for me, though.
I always eagerly look forward to this album and finish it disappointed. Some songs are among my favourites (including Blackbird, Martha, Glass Onion, Dear Prudence, while my guitar), others are quite poor. George Martin was right: should have been an amazing 2-sided LP, but we know selecting songs would have broken up The Beatles way before Let it be and Abbey Road. Pick and choose your favourites into a playlist and avoid the mishmash of great, awful, good, weak.
Some great songs, most of which you've already heard a thousand times. Some filler, some stuff that doesn't work. All in all it's decent. Could have been a killer single album.
It’s the white album. Nothing more needs to be said.
Some undeniable classics on here obviously, but there’s also some incredibly weird tracks (what the hell is Revolution 9?). I appreciate The White Album and it’s place in the top whatever albums, and it has some of my favourite Beatles songs, but are the 31 songs each a great listen, would I be listening to it in full regularly? No, probably not.
The Beatles on 'The Beatles' seem to be doing what beetles do best, often working alone, solitary, and independent of the others. You can almost feel them starting to distance themselves from one another. But all species evolve, and in their case they would adapt and move on, successfully. Think of some of this as the molting phase- ‘Glass Onion,’ ‘Helter Skelter,’ and ‘Long, Long, Long’ seem like flashbacks of the LSD influenced, 'The Magical Mystery Tour.' There’s also a splash of early Beatles’ here and there with ‘Back in the U.S.S.R.’ and ‘Birthday.’ But then there’s an awful lot of solo material from both Lennon and McCartney, almost as if they’re feeling their respective ways to wherever the next place is. Between Ringo’s obligatory good-natured but corny tune, ‘Don’t Pass My By,’ and just plain weird shit like ‘Revolution 9,’ 'The Beatles' tends to wander. But its still the Beatles, so its still great. At least the great parts are great. Out of the thirty songs, Lennon scored the best with eleven good ones, McCartney in second place with seven, and Harrison a solid four. However, if you consider Harrison’s average, four of four a winner, that’s batting a thousand my friends, just edging out Lennon, by contrast, with twelve out of thirteen. McCartney, unfortunately, had the same number of songs as Lennon, but five of those stunk (as well as a couple of their shared ones), giving him not much better than a 50% average. Mind you, this is purely my judgement, and adversely affected by offerings like ‘Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da’ and ‘Honey Pie,’ McCartney numbers that Lennon referred to derisively as ‘granny music.’ So, my scores are admittedly subjective. But I’m going with that, and if you like to come along and wander with me just a bit farther down this path, I’d like to propose my own alternate LP track list, and on just one record, as opposed to the double album set on which we all grew up. Leaving the order untampered with, 'The Beatles': Side One: 1) Back in the U.S.S.R. 2) Dear Prudence 3) Glass Onion 4) While My Guitar Gently Weeps 5) Happiness Is a Warm Gun 6) Martha My Dear 7) I’m So Tired 8) Blackbird 9) Piggies 10) Rocky Raccoon 11) I Will Total Length: 28.41 Side Two: 1) Julia 2) Birthday 3) Yer Blues 4) Mother Nature’s Son 5) Everybody’s Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey 6) Sexy Sadie 7) Long, Long Time 8) Revolution 1 9) Savoy Truffle 10) Cry Baby Cry 11) Good Night Total Length: 32.80 And the songs we left off? Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da, Wild Honey Pie, The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill (my only Lennon reject), Don’t Pass Me By, Why Don’t We Do It in the Road?, Helter Skelter, Honey Pie, and Revolution 9. If it were in the name of making a tighter single record LP, are there any amongst these eight that you just couldn’t live without? Finally (drum roll), awards for the best four songs, one on each side, and side one’s pick should be no surprise: George Harrison’s ‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps,’ with honorable mention for McCartney’s always unique melodic bass lines, at times playing entire chords and offering counter melodies and such. Side two goes to Sir Paul himself with ‘Rocky Raccoon.’ I remember this playing on the radio practically every time we climbed in my Dad’s big ol’ Pontiac Bonneville for a Sunday afternoon ride to Baskin r’ Robbins. Side three: the Lennon rocker, ‘Everybody’s Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey. Great guitars accompanying Lennon’s biting sarcasm and surreal lyrics. And my pick for side four: Another Harrison work, ‘Savoy Truffle.’ This sounds like something right off 'Revolver.' And special thanks to producer Chris Thomas for his terrific horn arrangement on this and others. I don’t know what this means exactly, but two of the best belonged to George, and along with Lennon’s one, most sound like the complete Beatles playing as a unit. Rocky Raccoon was pretty much all Paul. A shadow of things to come?
High points are obviously very high, there's no real consistency to the album though and some of it is very forgettable.
I mean, what is there to say except it's The Beatles' White Album. While My Guitar Gently Weeps has been among my most loved songs since the first time I heard it as a child. It still provokes emotion now, it's so beautiful. I didn't give this the full 5 because being forced to sing Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da in infant school has left scars. Not so much the singing but listening to 30 other seven year olds reguarly ruin it leaves lasting marks on a person.
Its the beatles. Some cool things but not really for me.
4, lots and lots on this, very long
Yeah it was good. Liked the production. T’was odd. Rocked hard in 68’. I’m really tired. The album was good. I’ve got blisters on my fingers.
Not my favorite but there’s an intimacy and a confidence that are really nice. Feels like this is making music especially for themselves, what they had inside wanting out. And it took until this listen to realize I’ve been playing Blackbird wrong.
Plenty of songs, loads of variety. Some real oddities but enough very good songs. Overall rather sprawling but it is a double album so offers room for experimentation.
I can respect being eclectic but holy shit dude. Almost every song on this album was good in its own right but had no continuity from one to the other. Also what the fuck was revolution 9. Back in the ussr and obladi = classics. Also liked the blues songs
Such a great and diverse album
This album is mostly great but the greatness is combined with some annoying experimental songs that left out would make this a solid five star experience. Now it is a mediocre four.
classic!
Good album; really interesting how it explores so many different styles.
I am very familiar with the band THE BEATLES and their ninth UK (or tenth US) studio album entitled, THE BEATLES (aka THE WHITE ALBUM, I like the album, but I’m not a big fan of their latter experimental work beginning with MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR (1967). After listening to THE BEATLES (aka THE WHITE ALBUM, I still liked the album, there are some great songs, but still some throwaway tunes which bring the rating down. 4/5
The Beatles' White Album is an oft-discussed contender for greatest double album of all time, and has a runtime of roughly the same length as a feature film. This will test my patience. White Album has a strong first half, that much is for certain. Back in the USSR kicks things off with great energy, Dear Prudence is one of the best songs ever done by The Beatles, I actually enjoy Ob-La-Di for it's simple fun, the list goes on. Though there are weak spots along the way (looking at you, Wild Honey Pie), the eccentricity gives the album a sort of carefree fun quality. This serves a stark contrast from the album cover, which is nothing. Somewhere after Blackbird, I feel as though we've lost the plot. Sure, they're well-made songs, but they're songs that sort of just wash over me. One of the pitfalls of making so many great songs is that the good songs sound just okay. This is also a pitfall of double albums, in that it becomes difficult to maintain consistent quality the longer the tracklist gets. Sure, there are plenty of great songs to talk about on White Album, but there are an equal amount of songs that get lost in the mix. Piggies, I Will, Mother Nature's Son, and many others are perfectly fine songs that lose momentum due to the other tracks that are miles better. White Album is a lesson in Beatles songwriting. It showcases how they are both good musicians and fantastic songwriters. I mean, gosh, Helter Skelter did heavy metal a full year before Black Sabbath. And props to Revolution 9 for scaring the folks at home
The so-called White Album was an example of the change of mood in rock music towards a simpler and more traditional way of making music. It's an album my parents listened to and so I have a more emotional approach to it. (8/10) FT: While my Guitar Gently Weeps, Hapiness is a Warm Gun, Blacckbird, Dear Prudence
To say that White Album is experimental is like saying that grass is green and sky is blue. It's quite a mixed bag, it has some of The Beatles' best work and some of their least memorable. Regardless of inconsistency it's still an amazing achievement in their discography. Some bands can only dream to achieve the heights of this album but the Beatles have had even better ones. Truly one of the best bands of all time.
These Beatles seem to be good at that music thing. Favourite Songs: Dear Prudence. The Continuing Story Of Bungalow Bill, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, I'm So Tired, Helter Skelter, Good Night
It's notable that a ninety-minute album can feel so purposely incomplete. The band is technically brilliant, but seem to be combining these songs toward an entirely different end than Sgt. Pepper's. The lynchpin of my reading is While My Guitar Gently Weeps, and my affection for that song is due in no small part to nostalgia. The first disc is killer; With the second, it seems a step down from the band's output. Still great to my ears, though this album seems extremely vulnerable to one's overall opinion of the Beatles.
A few duds on this one, but there are obviously some absolute stand outs.
it's a 4 I suppose. I'm not trying to be edgy by not giving it a 5, it's just ok to me. It starts off super strong and then gets a bit forgettable. And personally I've always found that Number 9 track extremely annoying.
A bloated classic. Would have been a great single album.
The best of this album IMO: - Glass Onion - Wild Honey Pie - Happiness Is A Warm Gun - Rocky Raccoon - Julia - Yer Blues - Sexy Sadie It lives up to the hype. Honestly super enjoyable. "Side one" is the best out of the four. Album is long though. 4.1/5
I think there are two kinds of people: those whose families listened to the Beatles and those who didn't. I'm in the 2nd category so even though I remember reading a John Lennon bio in high school and covered Back in the USSR, I never listened to the Beatles that much. I certainly didn't get the dance hall flourishes that they use on some of their songs. I knew a lot of the songs on this album because of covers so it was nice to listen to the whole album. It is especially interesting as a document about their trip to India.
It's the beatles!
A sprawling, messy album that highlights a pop sensibility backed with vaudeville and experimentalism, as well as some kick-ass guitar. Holds up a lot better than I'd remembered, especially on headphones.
Revolution 9 😍😍😍
Fitting that this comes up shortly after the release of Peter Jackson's Get Back documentary. Apparently the sessions for the White Album were the start of the fractures that led to the Beatles break up. Lennon even said "the break-up of the Beatles can be heard on that album". I guess it's a double-album in part because it's basically several solo albums jammed together and only 16 of the 30 tracks have all four members contributing. This definitely contributes to the album, it's all over the map musically. I find most double-albums to be a bit boring at some point but I think this avoids it mostly because it's so diverse. Some great stuff on here for sure but it's never really been my favorite Beatles record. This also becomes the point where Paul's contributions start to get a bit too saccharine. Also, small rant. I hate when people credit the Beatles for "inventing" all sorts of genres on this record. For instance people say they invented heavy metal and/or punk rock on Helter Skelter. I like the Beatles but this is a crazy statement. Both of these things are true: They are a great band and the most overrated band in history.
“Musically, there is beauty, horror, surprise, chaos, order. And that is the world; and that is what The Beatles are on about. Created by, creating for, their age.”
Not my favorite Beatles album. Very all over the place musically which is both its strength and weakness. The highs are very high the lows...well even the lows are pretty good. I want to give it 5 stars because it's very enjoyable, but it just isn't a 5 star album.
Some really classic Beatles and some wacky stuff too. 4/4 beatles
It's the Beatles, so it was good, but it's supposed to be one of their best. I just don't see how. Still good, all things considered.
7/10
First ever listen to that album! It’s a doozy. I see why folks put it in the list of best ever. Epic, and such a variety of sounds. Never been much of a Beatles fan—but respect where respect is due.
Grew up with this album so no chore here. Wildly uneven, starts with a piss take, ends with a piss take. Not sure even the Beatles wanted us to take this album seriously. Lots to enjoy, lots of fast forward.
7/10
Nice
I've actually never listened to the entire album because so many of the tracks from it are widely available. I found a lot of filler, but also a lot of nice gems. Revolution 1 is a nice alt version. Revolution 9 is an interesting avant garde track that is sure to raise a few eyebrows. I had to check twice that Good Night was by them because its sounded so different, Wiki informs me that the vocals are by Ringo and he can actually sing! Long, long, long and Yer Blues are good. But despite the filler there's a lot of killer. The strength of this album is the fact that its all over the map but it still hangs together quite well.
damn this is an hour and a half long? But theres a ton of good songs on here and some deep(not that deep) cuts that arent referenced in the Beatles doscog
Not a big beatles fan but I enjoyed most of this album
There are many great songs on this album most on disc 1. However, it did not need to be two discs. Disc two suffers and only a couple of songs are noteworthy.
Some of finest
Parhaimmillaan jumalaisen hienoja sävellyksiä (While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Glass Onion, Blackbird, I Will), mutta huteja löytyy enemmän kuin monelta muulta Beatles-levyltä. Pääosin kuitenkin erittäin nautinnollista musisointia musiikkihistorian merkittävimmältä orkesterilta. Ei edelleenkään ihan vitosen arvoinen kokonaisuus levyn selkeiden puutteiden takia, mutta erittäin vahvalla nelosella mennään.
Marvellous album, though could probably be edited down into something even better.
Never listened to it in it's entirety before. A lot better than I was expecting somehow.
It's a corker even if not my cup of tea. Jaunty and weird.
Kill ur darlings in would say
Not my favorite Beatles album but still great material.
Pretty good album.
Can't stand the Honey Pie songs, Bungalow Bill, and especially Revolution #9, but there's a ton to like here. The most uneven album of their later years, but still has so many essential songs. Best track: Dear Prudence
"Dear Prudence", "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", "The Continuing Story..." 8/10
5th August 2021 Listened in the morning and throughout the day on my phone while working. One of the most influential albums ever, I'm not sure how I feel about the more experimental aspects of this but no doubting it's place in history. Number 8
The only album worthy of 2
I can tell it's objectively good - but it's still not my favorite music I've heard!
Not the Beatles' best album, but it's definitely one of their best. Some favourites included While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Happiness Is A Warm Gun, Glass Onion, and Sexy Sadie.
Nicht Ihr bestes, aber halt Beatles
Had decided long ago that I did not particularly enjoy The Beatles. Guess I hadn’t listened to this in a long time because I was definitely wrong. 4.5 out of 5 for me.
Thoughts: I mean, it's a classic Beatles album. Some *very* high highs here, but this double album is very front loaded - I skip 7 of the last 11 songs.
love anything by them!
Kinda crazy this was made in 1968 as it sounds like a lot of stuff made after it, really goes to show how influential the Beatles have been on music! Catchy vocals, driving guitar chords, rock music was never the same haha favs - Blackbird, Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da
Excellent album and a true classic. My only wish was that the album was a bit shorter. I think some songs could be cut. My mom listened to this album a lot, and I've only now realized just how much.
Very weird. Each song was a different experience.
I feel a little indoctrinated already but hits are hits and there were too many to ignore. This album went from cringe to experimental to pop classics and was both fun and foundational throughout. Was very long with many songs that lacked much cohesion or flow.
I’m conflicted by this album. It was the first Beatles album I ever listened to, and it has them at their most experimental, but it also has just so many bad songs: “Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da,” and “Revolution 1” particularly stand out (no, I did not mistype “9” there; I said “1” and I meant “1”). The Beatles’ worst songs are all on this album. At the same time, I love it; I just recognize it takes a lot of effort to love it. I will say the production on this album is phenomenal. Favourite track: “Happiness Is a Warm Gun”
There are so many interesting ideas in this album. I loved the parodies of the Beach Boys, and there were lots of memorable guitar licks and chord progressions. Some of the Beatles' most creative work.
I really enjoy listening to this album - my favourite songs are Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da, Martha My Dear and I Will. But there are some songs that I don't enjoy so that's why I'm giving it a 4/5 stars.
THIS IS LORDE - MELODRAMA
About three times as long as it should be. Some great, timeless songs here though.
Its not perfect, but it tells the story of the Beatles better than any other album. As discussed, you can make an easy 5 star album out of it, but for the presence of a few fillers (and the fact Revolver is better), it gets 4.
solid
very much a mix of greats and rubbish. Beatles in crisis. Skipped quite a few tracks. Blackbird on headphones
Solid album. Some epic songs. It's fascinating to me the variation in Lennon and McCartney's songwriting style, it feels like your feeling different influences coming through even if both were credited.
Another classic
Takes a few listens before the ‘filler’ tracks start to make a bit more sense. There’s a lot of good stuff on here
Good album but a few filler tracks
4/5 Everything has been said about this from others
classik
a melange of Beatles classics. An interesting amount of unvarnished satirical raw energy. Enough variety that some of the lesser tracks fall through the cracks.
An eclectic collection, but I can't say I didn't enjoy some of the tracks even if some of the lyrics are nonsensical. The fact that my hearing issues make me not able to listen binaurauly probably impacted my enjoyment a good bit since it seems they used those types of soundscapes often.
I stand by what i said about the Beatles when we reviewed the Rolling Stones. The amazing highs here (Back in the USSR, While my Guitar, Blackbird, Helter Skelter) are soaring and better than anything the Stones ever did. Most of the album tracks wouldn't have made a stones b-side and are well below average. Some of the album tracks however are majestic (Yer Blues, honey pie, Rocky Raccoon). Did this need to be a double album and 30 songs long? No. There's a perfect 11 or 12 song album in there somewhere- its just a little bloated. Was it a massive step forward for rock n roll music globally? Absolutely. Did I enjoy listening for the first time since my post Oasis beatles phase in the early noughties? Of course I did. The lows are too low for a 5. but lets remember the highs! 4/5
We need to do more drugs
Quite a varied influence here from soul blues and rock to music hall style.
Merka at jeg er litt ferdig med beatles, men det er jo et godt album.
Re-listening for the generator; catching up to this one late to give it the continuous listen it deserves. So much interesting varied material; some of which, like the achingly beautiful "Blackbird", I saw Paul himself play in the Carrier Dome at Syracuse University in 2017. Awesome show, great album. (P.S. - "Good Night" is one of the best closers ever, particularly as the chaser to the legendarily inscrutable "Revolution 9".) 8/10
very listenable
Beaucoup de classique sur cette album, mais pas mon pref des beatles. 4.75
not really a fan of double albums. should have been 1 album of really good songs
Sexy sadie bester Song
I mean, what can you say about this album that hasn't been said? It's such a complete experience to listen to this album, even though some songs are simple, and poppy, there are songs like "Yer Blues" that are sadly unheard by people, which is criminal. this is definitely one of my top 20 albums i'll probably ever hear in my life.
Classic
Yup. A few tracks that are just blatantly bad but with over 30 tracks and a handful of gems, it’s an easy 4.
Some weird and skippable tracks on this album but the good tracks are so good they make the whole listen worth it
good but not good enough
There's a bunch of rubbish on here, but also some ab so lute slappers
absolute classic innit man
My album today is the White Album by the Beatles. There looks to be a lot of upheaval during the recording of this album. And people talk about how fragmented and disjointed the album is. It's also the first album where Yoko Ono became part of the recording process apparently. Which affected the connection between Lennon and McCartney. I think it's always something that sounded like the individual parts of the album didn't always come together to make a cohesive presentation like other albums. But there are songs and moments on the album that stand up there with any of the major work that the Beatles have done. It's always been a great listen, no matter where I've been in my life. Maybe just because it's not as polished or thematically connected like previous ones - people don't like it?
Listened to this a fair bit several decades ago... Many great pieces but I'm not sure that it holds up so well as other selections from the band's catalog. Some serious self indulgence and filler in the mix.
Excellent
Fantastic album with some of my favorite songs (Glass Onion, While my Guitar Gently Weeps, Helter Skelter), but there's also some filler. Did we really need piggies?
Way too long. 5 or so great songs, a few lesser heard good songs, and some awful songs.
Lots of good songs, but lots of ok songs
This was my self-appointed "favorite Beatles album" when I was a kid (despite not hearing all of the Beatles albums). I'm not sure it holds up to it's reputation. Some great songs on here-- Blackbird, Ob-La-Di-Ob-La-Da, Helter Skelter-- but there's also a lot of just plain weirdness, and very ego-centric "we can do no wrong" energy, with a lot of songs seeming like they could probably use a little more studio precision. This was the beginning of the end for this band, so the schizophrenic nature of the record makes sense. Still a solid outing, the Beatles are one of the greatest of all time for a reason.
Even though the album was too long and had too many fillers, it was still an interesting and enjoyable album
En meget blandet omgang. Flere vildt gode sange men også meget lettere fjollet
d1 - 5 d2 - 3.5
Some good ones.
I like it
Its a bit all over the place with mixed genres, but still somehow, much like Sandinista by The Clash, the end result come together(!) as a great album. Had no idea Eric Claption played guitar on Whil My Guitar Gently Weeps!
6/10
Picked up a bit in the final few songs (Cry Baby Cry’s my favorite on here) but a lot of filler for what I expected to be a masterpiece. Should’ve ended with whatever the hell Revolution 9 is versus Good Night
Not bad, but not great either. A lot of skippable nonsense, with a few solid songs. My first Beatles album, and I had extreme fatigue by the time I got to Disc 2. I'm no stranger to long albums or songs, but they need to be worth it, and this album was most certainly not.
First impression: Back in the USSR is an awesome tune so when I first put this on I had high hopes (I was an avid Beatles listener at one point, but it’s been awhile and the white album never really interested me so it was a semi fresh listen) yet I was met with utter disappointment. Sure dear prudence is an alright song but there are some tracks on this album where you can tell they were high off their rocker. I mean revolution 9?? It sounds like analog horror so I guess you can say it was ahead of its time. Other tracks like why don’t we do it in the road, piggies, wild honey pie were uninspiring. However I must admit tracks like Back in the USSR, While my Guitar Gently Weeps, I Will, Helter Skelter are spectacular. Additionally I noticed a romanticization/ fetish for guns in this album with tracks like Bungalow Bill, Happiness is a Warm Gun (notably a great track), Rocky Raccoon so idk exactly how I feel about that theme. What I’m certain of though is my feelings towards the song blackbird. I know technically it’s an amazing song, but it annoys me beyond end (maybe due to it being so overplayed). Overall a decent album, but I prefer their earlier stuff to be honest. Favourite Track: While my Guitar Gently Weeps (Helter Skelter is a close second) One sentence: John, George, Paul, Ringo… what shrooms were you guys on??? Will I revisit? Mainly spectacular tracks
Too long, a lot of filler here but still some great songs nonetheless
Good
The Beatles have some weird, experimental songs! I think I prefer some covers over the original (ie While My Guitar Gently Weeps) I really like their bluesy songs Conflicted because some of my all time favorites are on here. Yet there's some stuff on here that I'm just not into.
Very tight and clean musicality. Some big hits, some are more experimental (had kind of a punk song?) Overall enjoyable.
The first track is rlly good and I didn’t realise this is what my friend was singing Back in the ussr 🎵 🎶 The rest is kinda boring I’m sorry 😢 Why am I apoligising 😭😭😭😭
overall a very good album. some great songs with a few that perhaps were more relevant/interesting when this came out but just haven't aged well. I own this album and listen to it sporadically - not sure I would buy it today though, so only a 3

How do you rate a hot mess like this? A few absolute classics and influential tracks but a lot of weirdness and very little cohesion. A band pulling itself apart. Exciting! Good?
Great album, I’ve just heard it far too much
It sounds like an album from a band who are ready to go their separate ways. It gives everyone their moment but this leads to it being an inconsistent mess. Judicious editing would have cut this down to a potentially great album but it misses more often than it hits, though the hits are great. This may have been down to a reluctance to offend members of the group… Compare this to Pet Sounds, where every song serves a purpose and has its own story to tell, and you see how much of a mess this is…
I’m going to be controversial here and say I didn’t think this was as great as others might. There are some obviously great songs on here (‘dear prudence’, ‘while my guitar gently weeps’ (since hugely overplayed but I think the original holds up well), and ‘blackbird’) but there are some duff songs too (‘wild honey pie’, ‘don’t pass me by’, ‘savoy truffle’). Overall it just seems to lack the focus and musical storytelling of many of their other albums in favour of a quantity over quality approach. I found the stylistic changes jarring at times and though that might appeal to some, it didn’t use the album as a vehicle to provide as cohesive an artistic vision as something like ‘revolver’ does.
Me gustó. 7/10
I’ve been wanting to listen to this album for ages !! The Beatles are iconic obviously, and so is this album. My fav song by them is on this album !! Fav song is ‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps’.
This showcases their versatility but it comes across very disjointed. No denying the mania they inspired but to listen today isn’t special.
A nice album marking a new stylistic evolution for The Beatles. Gone are the days of fun, quirky pop ; it's a very modern-sounding record, with some songs straight-up going into experimental territory (like the amazing Revolution 9 - I would absolutely listen to 60 minutes of that !). It's really a mixed pot, though. I guess the popularity of this record is due to the fact that it features so many different styles that everyone can find something in it. I really like some of the songs (Back in the USSR, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Happiness is a Warm Gun, Helter Skelter...), but many others leave me indifferent, and a couple of them just annoy me. The Beatles have always been hit-or-miss for me - most of their albums have some brilliant songs, but fail to keep me entertained all the way through. I fully acknwoledge their importance, but they're just not that special to me. This one is also too long for my taste. It's hard to keep focused for 30 tracks in a row (and it was probably not meant to be listened like that, anyway). I'll come back to some of the songs, but not the full album. 6/10
One of the better ish Beatles albums
not a big fan of the beatles. but not a bad album
I'm not trying to be edgy, I just don't understand the hype 3
It mostly sounds like themepark music to me :< Do like while my guitar gently weeps
Oh the Beatles, I will never be able to form a solid opinion on you, but this was fine?
solid, but not a favorite
Hard to bash a band like the Beatles, and this album is so beloved that I feel I have to tread lightly. If you have a favorite band, you will no doubt have a favorite album. And if you have a favorite album, by extension you must have a least favorite album. And The Beatles (aka White Album) is my least favorite Beatles album. Which is hard to say, harder to defend. But here goes... We've previously had this debate at our house about this album. There are some GREAT and all-time songs on this album. But there is some genuine crap on there, too. Always felt if you could just cut out the garbage and pare it down to a single LP, this would have been one of their best. Of all time. A product of their extended voyage of discovery to India in 1968, Lennon and McCartney claimed some of their best songs were created at this time. Is Blackbird one of the best songs ever written? Yes, yes it is. Is Julia a great song? Yes. Ob-La-Di-Ob-La-Da is an absolute classic. Try NOT singing along with it when it comes on. Rocky Raccoon, Happiness Is A Warm Gun, Why Don't We Do It In The Road... All bangers. On the other hand, Sexy Sadie and Piggies will always be overshadowed by the film Helter Skelter. Wild Honey Pie, Glass Onion, and Revolution 9? Dogs. Did Revolution 9 drive Charles Manson insane? It certainly could have. It probably was a short drive, if you know what I'm saying. I really see in this album the fracturing of the Beatles as the world knew them, and likely the "beginning of the end." They only recorded a couple more albums before they said, "That's it." The infighting and lawsuits and money just became too much. And don't get me started on Linda... Like I said, great songs here. Just not great start-to-finish. My lowest rating for a Beatles album, no doubt.
Nice
I'm quite a weather vane when it comes to the Beatles. Sometimes it's just too pop and mostly annoying. This album just feels decent on the Beatles scale for some reason and has a good vibe.
I tried to give a fuck but I just couldn’t
Good album, but u didn't think I will be searching out for a vibe. I did really like Revolution 9 though - the Hip Hop lover in me? 3.5
I would have rated it higher if it wasn't a double album. There's absolutely wonderful stuff in there, but the weaker material drags it down. Still a very enjoyable album.
3.5. some killer tracks on this one but overall it's hindered by the tracks that would have been cut.
3.25 - I think I like this more every time I listen to it, but I don't think I'll ever understand the level of popularity that they still have.
One half of this album is great and the other half varies from fine to terrible (looking at you, Revolution No.9). It really is just way too long, and the Beatles have other, more consistent albums that are easier to recommend and enjoy. Favorite Songs: Back in the U.S.S.R, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Happiness is a Warm Gun, Mother Nature's Son
Good, I don’t like the Beatles very much
omg I took two days to listen to this, pls set me free.
6/10 Best songs: While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Happiness Is A Warm Gun, Blackbird, Helter Skelter, Honey Pie An incredibly disjointed album with a bunch of well-constructed yet utterly inconsequential pop songs. In less than 160 albums I've encountered four Beatles albums, one by George Harrison, and the Monkees, so I am on the record for not being a particularly big fan of the band. I understand why people like them and why they were so influential, but this album is proof of why I struggle with them: while there are some absolute world-changing hits, they were the absolute worst at editing out the dreck, they didn't know how to construct an appealing album (putting a bunch of songs together with no deeper thought does not make a good album), and half the songs are so meaningless that they're hardly worth listening to. I sort of think what's so appealing about the album is how they clearly had no interest in working together yet were too scared (tied to record contracts??) to disband and release their music independently. But that doesn't make up for some of this nonsense.
Way too long for its own good, but has some bangers. Strangely, the song that got stuck in my head was "Why don't we do it in the road?" which is not the most sfw thing to be singing out loud haha
The most experimental Beatles album, for better or for worse. The highlights are awesome. Back in the USSR makes for a thrilling opening with a banging and super memorable chorus. Dear Prudence and Glass Onion are these psych pop bops with amazing and ahead of its time production. Helter Skelter has such a heavy guitar riff and claustrophobic sound, it feels like it could burst at any moment. It's genuinely heavier than a lot of metal songs. Blackbird is a legendary song, While my Guitar Gently Weeps has some of the best chord progressions I've ever heard and Happiness is a Warm Gun is so grand and psychedelic it feels like a fever dream. There is some other good songs in here but the main problem is that this album is very long and kind of unfocused. You get all these amazing, monumental songs next to a song like Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da which is just this goofy and kinda corny track that doesn't fit this album at all. Same with Piggies and Rocky Raccoon. Don't Pass me By is kind of a weak country detour on the album. Why Don't We Do It In The Road sounds like a song by a corny dad rock band rather than the Beatles, I really hate the vocal delivery on that song. The 2nd half of the album is in general much weaker than the first, even the songs are like mostly aren't THAT crazy and it's filled with some weird detours that mostly don't work. Putting Revolution 9 towards the end of the album was a ballsy move, but doesn't really bring the experience up. Many bands have an album that I think is overrated, and for The Beatles, it's this one. Still, I respect it for what it is and love many individual songs.
Great album
Some iconic songs drowning in a sea of shite, proof that even genius needs an editor.
the beatles shitposting for an hour and a half trying to come up with the most random song idea. a few nice songs in the first half, but mostly filler. a plethora of genres and themes explored at the same time but im not sure whats the goal? nirvana levels of shenanigans. paul lowkey carrying with his vocals
Sometimes people telling you no is good actually
This is some amazing song in this album, but as a whole, it’s just too long. If it was edited down, I could easily see this as a 5/5.
Når man gir ut to album i året må det nødvendigvis bli mye fyllmateriale. Absolutt ikke blant Beatles' beste.
Some great songs but like all 30 song albums there’s some filler.
Some great songs let down by some mediocre ones.
The thing about this album is, it's good, but not great. I personally feel like they threw everything at the wall to see what would stick. The Beatles are listed as one of the greatest music acts of all time, and with good reason. But at some point they overextended themselves for the sake of art and became a parody of a good band.
I think I will never understand the Beatles phenomenon - I think after the 70s it is just an inertia given to the band by the people who’s now either very old or dead. Anyway, all the song in the albums are unique and each song sounds different, which is quite amazing. But… Back in the USSR… wtf is this? “You don’t know how lucky you are boys” and “the Ukrainian girls really knock me out”. Are you kidding?)) Singing things like this in the end of the 60s is one of the most stupid thing I’ve even heard in my life. Ahah
Beatles sind fine.
At least I can now say I've listened to it fully. The Beatles have never truly clicked for me and this album is representative of that. Has some of my favourite songs of theirs, and a fair few songs that I actively want to avoid.
Los Beatles siempre bien, pero no me fascinan
Pre listening thoughts: 1968 was the year my mom was born so Ill keep that in mind while listening. Ill admit...im not a big Beatles fan but Im hoping this album surprises me. Oh, and it has 30 tracks wtf!! Post listening thoughts: The album felt like an adventure...a chaotic type of adventure. There was certainly lots of variety in sound but perhaps too much? I didnt find there to be a good flow nor any cohesiveness with the album. There were certainly some good songs that stood their ground individually. I just did not see the vision of throwing all of them together in the track list. Fav song: torn between Dear Prudence & I Will
Beatles. Whatevs.
I have more liked songs on Spotify for the Beatles (the artist) than for any other artist except for 1 other. In other words, they are #2 for me based on the number of songs liked. So, they are definitely one of my favorite artists of all time. I have 124 songs liked by them with 10 of those from this album. Going into this today, I'll admit that this is my least favorite album of the post Rubber Soul run. 10 songs sounds like it would be a lot but this is a double album that has 30 songs on it! On previous listens I have always thought it sounded like it has a lot of throwaway, filler songs. And generally I think most double albums suffer a similar fate - too many weaker odds and ends thrown in to fill up the space of the 2 discs. Because I love the Beatles, I will come into this with an open mind though, and re-listen to it all several times through. The 10 liked songs I am starting with are: "Back In The USSR", "Dear Prudence", "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da", "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", "Blackbird", "Rocky Raccoon", "I Will", "Julia", "Birthday", and "Revolution 1" - and of these I consider Dear Prudence, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, and Blackbird peak Beatles. I always thought it was unfortunate this album surrounded them with so many less good songs. So I'm curious to see if I end up liking more of this upon additional listens. This has a bunch of bad songs that should not have been released such as "Wild Honey Pie", "The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill", "Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except for Me and My Monkey", "Savoy Truffle", and the worst of all songs "Revolution 9". I did end up liking 7 more songs after repeated listens - "Martha My Dear", "I'm So Tired", "Don't Pass Me By", "Mother Nature's Son", "Helter Skelter", "Long, Long, Long", "Good Night" - and to be honest these are all just OK songs and not their best stuff. This should have been a single album. It feels to me that this was the Beatles saying "It doesn't matter what we put out, people will just like it because it's the Beatles." So it feels a little like a cynical and disappointing release to me - compared the the rest of their stuff. I think they went back to greatness on subsequent albums - the Abbey Road album for sure and somewhat but less so on the Let It Be album Either way - I just added 7 more Beatles songs to my Spotify library - so that's good! Liked songs on Spotify: 17/30 Rating: 3/5
For some people this would be the greatest double album that was ever recorded by a band from the United Kingdom. Sadly, that is an incorrect opinion the greatest double album from the United Kingdom is The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway.
I appreciate the Beatles, but man not the biggest fan of Paul’s lyrical style
6/10
Everyone knew this was fucking coming
Jeg synes det er en del gode tekster. Men for meg har Beatles aldri fengt. Det er musikalsk litt kjedelig med noen virkelig fine. 2-3 et sted, runder opp
pqp 1 hora de bitous FAVS (top 3): the continuing story of bungalow bill, honey pie, good night mençoes hornosas: back in the USSR, blackbird, i will, cry baby cry o inico bem legal divertidinho mas dps fica chato pakas mas se ouvir bem é divertidinho em geral mas ai gente nao precisava de tantas musicas assim pare de tentar tirar dinheiro do povo nota final: 3/5
Meh.
some all time tracks, some meh
Another Beatles album, another mix of the great, the decent, the bang average and the downright unlistenable. While My Guitar Gently Weeps is the standout, solidifying why George is the best Beatle - thank you, no questions. The second half of this double album is markedly worse than the first, few songs if any worth listening to the end. I've got to give it a 3
This album goes from the best song you’ve ever heard to noises beyond human comprehension
muy lindo y tranquilo para escuchar de fondo
There are some absolute all timers on this album, some cool groundbreaking tracks on this record but if it was 17 songs shorter it would be one of my favorite beatle albums.
Didnt get through it all. Not because terrible, just too busy. Overall from disc 1 - some absolute azong aonga mixed with whimsical crap. Overall i foundnit very inconsistent.
I've always struggled with the White Album a bit. It has some absolute gems on it, with Lennon in particular on fire, and Harrison finally being allowed some influence. But it's so sprawling, with so much filler, I can't bring myself to love it. Just because you're The Beatles doesn't mean that every little thing you produce needs to make it onto a record. If only there had been someone with enough sway over the group to rein them in.
Heard it before. What a crazy collection of songs, you just don't know what you're gonna get when the next song starts. Because of that I guess I have mixed feelings about it, the songs I love from here I do love though. Still, an iconic album 3/5
Although I've heard all of these songs before, Don't Pass Me By and Helter Skelter stood out. This album needs tightened down. Just too many average songs. Still some great tracks though too. Maybe my least favorite Beatles album? 3.5/5
Im not much of a Beatles enjoyer, they are usually to folk or too psychedelic, but this album has a mix of tracks where some of them are more interesting than I usually find Beatles to be Standouts Back In The U.S.S.R. Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da 3/5
Couple of highlights. It’s a fine album. Confirmed the fact I like the Rolling Stones more.
A brilliant, forward thinking rock masterpiece that's wrapped in a self-indulgent, bloated album.
I can see why it is big and there were some songs which I liked. But I still cannot get into The Beatles.
31 - The Beatles - The White Album - Rating = 3 Opens with Back in the USSR which sets a stripped-down rocking sound but still a Beatles feel as we get serious late 60’s influences coming into their style. I mean the Beach Boys sound underneath is distinct. I don’t think I ever knew the 10,000 Maniacs “Dear Prudence” was a Beatles cover… that’s terrible of me…. But I like Natalie Merchant’s version better. Wild Honey Pie is a 53 second audio assault - NO - wow that’s bad. I’m getting less into this with Bungalow Bill…. Okay, this is fine, it’s nice… it’s the Beatles… but other than like their greatest hits, I’m only interested as non-offensive background music. Fine. I’m not that interested.
quite liked this actually!! not fully my type of music tho. really liked while my guitar gently weeps and happiness is a warm gun. i prefer more "serious" music idk 😭😭 i liked the serious songs more here
