Reviews (page 12 of 13)

SMoooth and bouncy. Okay

Interesting R&B album, some of the songs had a good beat to it. Otherwise not my genre.

Pre-listen notes: I fucking hate the disco genre, so I reckon this will be a big ol’ goose egg for me. But I guess I signed up for this, and disco was bound to show up eventually. I’ll be a sport and give it a shot, but I don’t expect to finish this one. Just getting into the record: I don’t hate the bass lines and the jazzy guitar bits. The drums (riding the hell out that hi-hat) are kinda killing me; I think this is generally what makes disco a challenge for me. The unchanging repetitive nature of the drums just drone on and drive me crazy. Actually, I’m 2 tracks in and finding these songs to be overlong because of the repetition; why say in 2 minutes what can be extended to 10? Maybe that’s an exaggeration, but it doesn’t feel like it. That said, I’m not dreading continuing this just yet. There are some redeeming qualities in the musicianship and production; this record, so far, is clean and tight. I actually like some of the instrumental sections for the jazz licks. “Savoir Faire” is a highlight. But, this record is really not my style, I guess. Tight musicianship, and the bassist is really killer, but the music itself is pretty tough for me to get through, and I’ll not be revisiting it. Disco just sucks. 2.5/5

2.3 1x not my thing

Every song drags on too long. Repetitive. Two big singles are bangers though.

Ehhh it's okay but it could be way better. Sonically, i like the tones and general vibe of the album but I feel a lot of these tracks could do with more development or differentiation from each other. Although they're groovy, some of the tracks linger around without really going anywhere Also, the lead guitarist is overplaying to compensate for this lack of development in my opinion. The bends they do with this tone aren't very pleasant either, sounds like he's fighting the guitar, in a bad way. Funky and unoffensive but a bit boring. Would do great in a new Alvin and the Chipmunks movie... Fav tracks - Le Freak Worst track - Chic Cheer - savoir faire

The jason derulo of the 70s, god this band want to make sure you know their name. Obviously it’s hard not to like the groove that Nile Rodgers brings to a tune, but at times it’s like the record is stuck and cant move onto the next part. I didn't think i would say this but Fatman S coop made more of Chic Cheer than Chic did. Le Freak is a stonewall classic and enough to make me overlook that lyric (i know it’s Chic, enough already) Savoir faire was not what i was expecting and not in a good way. Bring back the vocals telling me who it is as i honestly wouldn’t have known this was by Chic. Another dull if funky track and then another classic in I Want Your Love. Why do we get some momentum going and then dash it with a slow dirge track. Sometimes tries its best to get us back on track with a funky Niles bass-line but still feels like filler. (Funny) bone has a great groove to it and the lack of anything that could reasonably described as lyrics works in its favour

I was only a wee lad in 1978 when Le Freak was a hit. I was developing my own taste in music but still mostly listened to my little brown transistor radio. I didn't know what freak out meant, or anything about Nile Rodgers or funk music so I was intrigued when this came up as my album yesterday as I could hear it in a whole new context. I honestly haven't been as disappointed in anything I have been assigned more than this album. Aside from Le Freak, there really isn't anything interesting here, and even that is ruined because the first song which precedes it is pretty much them singing C'est Chic over and over again so by the time I got to the second song I was already tired of hearing those words. The rest of the album is honestly just more of the repetitive lyrics and melodies almost to the point of it being either laughable or rage inducing. The R&B stuff is uninspired and it just seems to go on forever. The sweeping funk guitar is executed perfectly but even that got tiresome. I expected so much more from this album.

Great album, a couple slow spots but the pop hits are wonderful. Def a product of its times

Great bass throughout. Some songs were unbelievably boring. Only a song or two I’d ever want to hear again

Front end loaded with the best songs. Back half was boring, really repetitive. All about disco.

This might be a classic in some circles, but for me, it’s a tough listen. If you enjoy hearing the same phrases repeated over and over for four minutes straight — long before EDM made that kind of repetition feel cool — then this might be your thing. But for anyone looking for variety or depth, this album wears out its welcome fast. Most tracks feel like extended loops with very little payoff, and the vocals often come off as background noise rather than anything truly engaging. It’s glossy, danceable, and polished, but it all starts to blur together pretty quickly. The one real highlight is “Savoir Faire” — a smooth instrumental that lets Nile Rodgers’ guitar work shine.

Ok. Dated and not that exciting.

This is a classic case of Side A is way better than Side B, as was the case for many albums of that time. Fun listen, especially the disco dance cuts, but it definitely fades in the album. If you never heard Sometimes You Win, I'm not so sure you're really missing out. I honestly liked the instrumentals and wish there was more. The female singers were far and away better than the male counterparts, and the songs are worse when they are front and center. If someone threw this on at a party, I think it'd be a good record to show you have taste and like to have fun. No need to go into that big of a deep dive. On a scale of -5 to 5, this is a 2.

It's a pleasant listen, but I'm just not a disco queen. Great bass on I Want Your Love.

Well, I personally like the disco songs better than the two non-disco songs... at least I liked the two disco hits "Le Freak" and "I Want Your Love", plus "Sometimes You Win" (the other three disco tracks were definitely subpar disco filler.) But if there is one think I never liked about Chic as a whole is the kind of faceless female harmonies they employ. I remember noting that on the Sister Sledge album, as one thing that kept me from really digging that album. But at least with Sister Sledge, there was strong lead vocal to carry it. This it just kinda falls a bit flat, even on the hits. Musically, I can actually dig the disco grooves, but all in all this is bland when it's not bad... "At Last I'm Free" was quite frankly the most boring song in the set. I almost fell asleep walking my dog. (4.6) ★★

I don't like disco much. I prefer the one song that sounds more adult contemporary, but nothing on here is good in my opinion. 2 stars

It was ok

repetitive

no disco for me. Le Freak is kinda nice, the worst song is the longest one. it sounds so weird how they sing the chorus in this song.

I just wanted it to end.

Just not for me

Kinda lame, in my opinion. The hit is definitely a classic, but I wouldn't call it good. I don't get it.

First 2 tracks are real bangers: “chic cheer” and “Le freak”. But the rest of the album feels a bit one dimensional and derivative. Some slick bass lines.

Not bad but not great. It was a bit beige for me tbh, background music for a shopping mall.

Great timing, production, proficiency, writing and rhythm, but still mediocre

Disco is a hit or miss for me. This one while having a few good tracks most are misses for me.

Just nice funk music. Couldn’t finish every song because they all sound similar

Fun album, despite the two-star rating. Just a little cheesy.

I hated disco as a kid. This wasn't as bad as I anticipated but still very formulaic and got kinda boring

I mean, 'Le Freak' is a bop through and through, but the rest is so mediocre and repetitive. Background music with a some slap bass.

Lots of people worked very hard to bring us this disco album. I mean no disrespect when I say I don’t care for the outcome.

impressive how many known songs are on this record. still, no fan of that funky disco sound.

Definitely a classic. I added “chic cheer”

This is the cheesiest album and aged terribly. The only thing I liked was the guitar, everything just did not work. For the first few seconds of "Le Freak" I thought I would be enjoying it but after a minute I was already done with it and noticed it's flaws. Overall did not enjoy.

mid imo

Dripping in style and skilled musicianship but alas in my eyes very little substance

Day410 - i have nothing but respect for nile rodgers but this is goofy and pretty corny

Yeah yeah yeah, Nile Rogers is a legend, and I'm sure Chic were highly influential in the world of disco, but fuck me this is repetitive at times. Excessively so. The best tracks are the ones that break up the monotony or are that catchy it doesn't matter too much. For example 'Happy Man' does repeat but it's an effortlessly cool song and a huge ear worm so I can kind of forgive it. 'Savoir Faire' is the best track. There's fantastic guitar solo playing throughout this great instrumental. An easy highlight. These two I'd happily add to a playlist and I wish they were up there with Chic's most popular singles so we could hear them until the end of time. In contrast, the opener and 'Le Freak' (which I've never liked anyway) are ridiculously unvaried. There are good riffs throughout the album but the song lengths are a lot longer than they have any right to be. I get that it's probably the point but it's not for me. It's cool, groovy and funky with great guitar, bass and production, but it gets boring in places and I didn't enjoy this a huge amount.

None of it is bad. In a club in the 70s I’m sure it hits so hard. Just too long if you’re not in the mood for the jam

Disco-Disco

Too much disco for one sitting

This album felt like it took a lifetime to get through. It was fine, but I wouldn't listen to it ever again.

Overall this was actually better than I expected. Certainly not the worst funk influenced disco, just pretty boring and repetitive, even if there are a couple good songs in there.

Pretty okay!

The baselines really steer this album away from the ditch. They’ve got the grooves, but the ultimately the hokieness of disco prevail and turn me off.

2.7/5 it’s really well produced, the bass is very farty but in general, it’s not really hitting with me. i felt a bit bored listening esp when some songs feels like they drag on forever. le freak however, is iconic.

Nice to hear a female voice. Easy to dance to, not much else going on.

"I Want Your Love" ?

A couple well known disco songs that were big hits, but for the most part I found the album lacked that 70s groove that made the disco era so popular.

The funk is good. the jazz is good. the slow jams are boring. and there's too many.

- First encounter with artist - 3/8 songs added to main playlist - Not a big disco fan - Songs are groovy, but many are repetitive almost to the point of boredom - Good background noise - Favorite song: I Want Your Love

Some decent jams but *way* too repetitive.

Couple of good jams but it felt too repetitive. Maybe if I was on the dance floor of Studio 54 I’d be more into it.

Not too bad of an album, enjoyed having this in the background, although at some point the songs would just be the exact the same 5 seconds but repeated over and over again (a great example being the last bit of Le Freak). Pretty decent, enjoyed it a bit.

Sounded exactly as expected, it's funky disco. Once you've heard le freak you basically have the measure of chic. Not a particular disco fan but it does completely nail the genre. Went by nice enough but would never intentionally return. They seem to have managed to make the most of the retro tour circuit, Nile Rodgers is everywhere too. 2.5 but more like a 2.

Would not return but I did enjoy the intense foray into disco - this is disco. Le Freak is a banger.

I expected I wouldn't like this, but actually didn't mind it. Less disco than I was expecting, and much more funky, which was a relief. Le freak does nothing for me, I want your love is better. Some of the guitars on other tracks were nice. I think it was savoir faire. Was losing interest by the end. Pleasantly surprised but still not quite my thing. 2.5

Pretty fun

Very smooth production and sound. Each song seemed to drag on a while

Great vibes, terrible lyrics. Hate Disco

Not really for me. Would be good if I were in a 70s disco, but not one I would just listen to.

Funk. A little too laid back for me. Decent background noise but that was about it.

Not my thing.

It’s a 70s disco album. Thought it might be French but it was not.

# 315 : sigh! A one line bio. Says all you need to know… Le Freak

Disco sucks, man. Having said that, I love Nile Rogers' guitar playing and Bernard Edward's bass playing. Plus 1-star for the music and production quality! Even this can save this sucky disco album.

This was okay. I like disco, I like funk, and this had both. But none of it really stood out to me. It'd be decent background music in the right sort of bar, but I'm not sure I'd ever put it on to listen to myself.

Glemte å følga med

Some fun tunes but overall I feel like it was less then the sum of its parts. Didn't quite make me bob my head.

Fun and bouncy melodies but holy shit is it repetitive. I was curious to see what more there was to Le Freak after hearing it in movies all my life… but it’s mostly that 10 second loop for 5 minutes lol. I guess the royalty checks are fat at least (2.5/5)

Since this album is basically exactly the same as the other Chic album on this list, I’ll just repurpose my review of “Risqué” for “C’est Chic”: I know the whole “Disco Sucks” movement was grounded in racism and homophobia from middle-aged white construction workers who throw batteries at Santa Claus and thought everyone should just be happy to listen to Bachman Turner Overdrive for the rest of time, but disco sucks. Disco music is music made for people to dance to. Is “The Electric Slide” or “The Cupid Shuffle” on this list because of their importance in giving boring people something to do at weddings? This music does not need to be heard unless you are wearing bell bottoms, being felt up by Andy Warhol and doing the hustle. I am aware that Chic was influential and people have sampled them millions of times to make other songs. But that just means these are bad songs with some good parts in them (mostly the bass which is, admittedly, bangin). So let’s listen to those better songs that reuse the good parts of these songs instead of this cheese-fest. Most of this is pretty lame, and even worse, it’s lame and way too long. If you’re going to be cheesy, at least get it over with quickly. In conclusion, disco sucks. *throws battery at Santa Claus*

Good disco album. I was a tad disappointed that it lost energy in the middle but, happy that Funny Bone brought it back up.

There are some nice grooves but this is a very uneven listen. Most of the songs get rolling and then don't go anywhere. I remember even being disappointed with this release back in the day. More a dance album than a listening album.

Disco is so agravating

This reminds of back in my high school days when one of my teachers told the class - with a proudly carried shame, but shame nonetheless - of the time he bought this record right after it came out. He was going back to his side of the muddy river by walking across the causeway, and a big gust of wind hit him and pulled the record out of his hands and off into the mud below. Lucky guy.

This grabbed me way less than the previous Chic record, every song felt very repetitive and simplistic. Not a fan.

Liked Song LeFreak

Boring, snooze-fest except for their one hit song.

Passo....

Meh, should have stayed a one hit wonder

Boring

chic chic chic chic chic chic

Undeniable is the fact that, for most of the songs on this album, one gets a Party vibe... freak out! Undeniable is the fact that the groove is Tight! Undeniable is the fact that, from a musician standpoint, they knew what they were doing! Undeniable is the fact that ALL songs last TOO long... which is a shame!

Not a fan of this…

Has a good song, but otherwise boring.

I didn't like it, but I didn't not like it

Hated it. HATE. Some cool beats I guess. But I don't like disco. At least I know they're whispering chic in those songs

There are aspects of this album that I enjoyed. The instrumentation is solid and there are some great bass lines. However, for a relatively short album it felt long. Most of the songs were just one motif repeated for 4 minutes. At Last I Am Free is the worst offender, they took what would be an okay chorus and made it a whole song. So yeah, this album needs work, it really felt like they had ideas for songs and instead of fleshing them out just made entire songs out of one idea.

Disco Stu mag Disco Musik

I don’t think this has aged real well. Music and lyrics are very repetitive. Other than the one hit, it all seems very bland to me.

First one that I had never even heard of before. Funky disco album. It was fine, just not my thing.

I rarely seem to give anything but a 2 anymore. This seems to have become the standard for 'It didn't hurt my ears but I will never listen again (out of choice)'

Richting 2.5

Not for me

I don't like the true disco songs that much but I liked the instrumental that had a very jazzy feel. Nile Rodgers is clearly a very good guitarist.

Nile Rogers rules. I cannot, however, listen to an entire album of disco in this, the year of our lord two thousand and twenty four.

Fun instrumentation and melodies dragged down by the fact that nearly every song gets repetitive and goes on for about 3 minutes longer than they should

Blind album, know the hit and artist. I think I liked their other album on the peoject more honestly. Oh well.

Disco in the morning? I wasn't ready!!! This has a couple of good songs, and they do seem to be too long, but maybe that was to keep us dance, dance, dancin'.

Its very mediocre

Chit. Second song was good but all the songs are way too long for what they are

alright

Not feeling this one, played to death back then, has not aged well for me

One thing I've learned from this list is that I much prefer Chic in small doses rather than full albums

Disco’s not for me

The well-known "le freak"-loop is very catchy and "i want your love" is ok. The rest of the album sonds not that "Chic" but very repetitive to me and don´t convinces me at all.

Disco. Can’t say more. Just disco. To the core.

Comes out hot with Chic Cheer, famously sampled by Faith Evans on Love Like This, followed by Le Freak, a song so ubiquitous that in listening to this album while walking to pick up my lunch, it was actually playing on the speakers at the lunch spot when I got there. Coincidence, I think not. Le Freak, a staple of the disco era, is now, for better or worse, weaved into the fabric of America. Savior Faire is a solid slow jam that I was happy was instrumental considering how annoying Le Freak’s vocals can be. And after that, the album is basically forgettable elevator music. In summary, this album is lame.

Sorry, quite boring

It’s another disco album, with all that implies. I guess if you like disco you’ll really like this album. Not for me, but a bit better than Risqué.

Meh, not that great. Decent background music, but not particularly fun or interesting for me.

I’m not sure why this is on this list. It’s listenable and not a bad album but every song sounds more or less the same

they repeat the lyrics all the time, tf??!! It was not the kind of music i usually lissen to, and there was no songs there i enjoyed lissenig to:(

This is kinda fun I guess, but it's really repetitive and simple. There isn't much to the music and even less to the lyrics. Still, kinda fun I guess.

great bass playing. two good singles. otherwise, kinda meh.

I can't deny the instrumentalism is great, and the production is top notch, but its just so repetitive, very of its time, repetitive, and repetitive. Not a high point.

Not a big disco person. It was enjoyable. I didn't mind listening, had some good jazzy type moments. Not a genre that I really dive into much though.

I really struggled #1 to get through this album but then #2 on whether to give this a 1 or a 2. I finally landed on 2 but that is solely because of the bass and the guitar (especially on track 3). Otherwise I hated every second of this album. I don't care that Chic is supposed to be some revolutionary band that inspired generations. They're overrated. I don't care that the did Le Freak. The lyrics sucked it's all just get up and dance and that will somehow make everything better. Also the songs just repeat the same couple phrases for about 5 minutes. It's awful. There's a reason disco died and I really hope it stays dead. I did not like this.

not my style at all. songs super repetitive & go on too long. vocals are nice hence the 2

Disco chic.

Reminds me of my mom

Ok. Good music. Not for me.

Two hit wonder.

😂😂😂😂😂😂No. Divertido. Nada más.

Nothing about this particularly appeals to me. 2/5

Standard slice of 70s disco elevated by one of the truly great bass players. Happy man has however worked it's way into my playlist.

Lots of repetitiveness like in Le Freak. Some good solo guitar work on Savoir Faire. I dig Happy Man. On track 6, very repetitive.

WHY DOES DISCO HAVE TO HAVE SUCH SHITTY MUSIC TO GO ALONG WITH SUCH BADASS GUITAR PLAYING?!?!

groovy, disco vibes. wishing there was a 1/2 star option!

Fun!! great childhood memories!

These songs dragged, but I mostly liked it. 2.5/5 [side note: this list is sooooo 70s heavy. So far it's at least double every other decade]

This started off ok then just went down hill quickly. Don’t think I’ll be seeking out any CHIC albums soon.

Disco isn't really my thing, but this was ok I guess. I never really care when artists use their name in songs, it just sounds tacky to me and they did this from the start. Pretty meh overall. 2/5

Weak slow 70s disco time-stamped piece. Barely a 2 simply because it's not totally offensive.

Not for me. Shout out to another Shrek song though.

Slightly disappointed by this one to be honest. Obviously, I have heard le freak and I want your love before. Which are ok tracks, however the rest of the album does nothing for me.

The only song I was familiar with was Le Freak and other than that nothing and don’t feel the need to get to know them more. Totally mid album in my opinion.

I STILL OWN THE ORIGINAL 45 OF LE FREAK! (...it means the single. record. the little thing...) I got it when I was ...6? 7? It still - as they say - slaps. ----- Gotta say tho, the album is a giant disappointment. I'd never heard it before (outside of "I Want Your Love") and it's kind of a drag to get through. It's hard to say that about an album with absolutely TOP NOTCH guitar and bass playing and crystal clear mix/production. A++. But it's dull dull dull. Outside of "Savoir Faire" which showcases the guitar playing of Nile, this is mostly uninteresting background/syrupy music for any 70s cheesy movie. Again: disappointment. I'll stick to my old 45. 4/10 2 stars.

Some good musicianship going on throughout. I lived through the Disco era so I remember the music....and I really don't want to go back. This is a good album for nostalgia, but the music is pretty simplistic with the lyrics....and complex with the music. They do like saying "freak" and "chic". Now please go back to the 70's where you belong.

This could of been 10 mins shorter and more intresting, fun at the start but then got borin

No denying the talents of Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards. And Le Freak is a banger. But there are too many ballads that drag this album down. I prefer Risque over this one.

Comes on strong, fizzles fast.

Very funky album with the main song being Le Freak. Was okay, wouldn’t rush back to listen to it.

Some of this had some pretty good guitar that I wasn't expecting mixed in with the disco.

Groovy but a bit dull.

Not my style

I never want to hear a hi-hat open strike again after the first two tracks. I’ll take the blow and leave the music behind. Ok-ish ride for most of it tho…

While I appreciate the funky bass lines (and there are some VERY funky bass lines on this album), the whole thing still stinks of disco. And disco is the worst thing to ever happen to music. So, +1 for funky bass lines... minus all the rest because disco sucks.

Disco, apparently. Mostly just groovy beats with some sporadic horns and such on top

mind numbing BUH

49% A strong 2 stars. Nice guitar work, decent instrumentation in general, but quite repetitive and the songs are not nearly interesting enough to be so long.

One was way to long but not my type of music, I want something newer too 😭

Not my fav funk

I am already very much over the funk genre Top Tracks: 1) Savoir Faire

damn when they said funk they weren’t kidding. this stuff is so corny skdjfsk. why the fuck is le freak the track with a cultural place from this album. savoir faire is literally right over there.

chic cheer - 2. misto le freak - 1. misto savoir faire - 6. misto happy man - 3. misto i want your love - 4. misto at least i am free - 5. misto ostatni me nezaujaly vubec

I feel like I really tried. Some of the more-or-less instrumental tracks featured great guitar and a solid rhythm section. Otherwise, I'm not much of a fan of disco. Funk and soul I like - just not disco.

This is my first time hearing this album although I definitely know Le Freak. The rest were new to me. It's pretty good, but probably not something I'll come back to. I like Nile Rodger's guitar throughout, but a lot of the songs seem repetitive and overly long. That may just be par for the course for a disco album. Best song other than Le Freak is Savoir Faire which is a cool jazzy instrumental. I Want Your Love is pretty good as well.

Really don’t like disco. But I am a fan of a funky baseline. Has its ups and downs, I think 2 stars is fair…

Very much a disco vibe. Not super crazy about it. But the song happy man definitely went in my library.

too disco-sounding and slick for me

Made it three songs in before needing a break. Not digging it so far. More to come. Nevermind. I'm done with this one

There was one well known song. The rest of it was disco. The songs went on a little to long. It wasn't bad but I don't have a desire to revisit it.

Background listening music tbh

not really my vibe

Some of the tracks were far longer than they needed to be, although if you're sweatily dancing around a light up dancefloor you probably aren't bothered. I wasn't, for the record. I loved the guitar playing. Nile Rodgers is great.

I can see it’s value I suppose but it’s not for me.

Esta bueno. Temas largos y repetitivos (como malo). Los instrumentos muy limpios.

Favorite track: Le freak

Dance music while at home is not a suitable situation. Ok, I did move a little in my desk chair...

Enjoyable, but it is disco, which has to involve at least a one star demerit.

Hey - Le Freak is an amazing song. The rest of this album? Well, it’s high-end disco, right?

Not sure how to rate this .

disco shmisco

Ahh...disco!

not super impressed with this album. feels like a lot of funky filler. le freak is the only one I knew beforehand and liked. decent background music but all the songs are like two minutes too long. favorites: le freak

I can appreciate the disco roots of a lot of modern dance music, but a lot of these songs sound like easy listening, adult lite music.

Lots of albums on this list seem to be arguments that 1 hit wonder bands deserve more attention. Not sure this album really makes the case.

Fine in small doses but it got repetitive.

There are bits and pieces that are funky and fun, but damn near every song goes on too long. This is the same response I had to the other Chic album. Hopefully there are no more.

Taas aika perus chicin funkkia nilen funkkaavalla kitaralla. Ei kuiteskaan mitään erikoisinta.

I have a soft spot for disco, and will argue that it directly inspired a lot of artists I love today. But boy oh boy am I glad this era of music died violently. For an album consisting of 8 tracks, C’est Chic sure does drag. But still, Le Freak has one of the most recognizable commands in music history, so I won’t be too harsh on this one.

Vecchie canzoni anno 70, noiose ormai

somewhat enjoyable

Only liked le freak the rest was I amusing

Pretty fine

Interesting sound just not for me

2 wah wah wah

Funky disco freak out

le freak is one of those songs i know really well but had no clue who the artist or song name was

Not really a fan of disco but two songs stand out to me was Le Freak and I Want Your Love

I went in expecting to really like this album considering that I like the general sound of disco but ended up being fairly disappointed. While the songs may be better in a disco club setting, the extreme repetition of lyrics and the unneeded extra minute or two of each song does not make for a great listening experience at home for me personally. The production and instruments were nice though and the singles were definitely the strongest songs on the album.

Don't know this one except for the one iconic anthem.

This album starts out so promising with Chich Cheer setting the mood and Le Freak building on that. But rest of the record just kind of fades into the background and doesn't really go anywhere.

Yeah some catchy tunes but as a whole all the songs sound pretty similar. Probably being a bit harsh.

Nice vibe but you know, ehhhhhh

Very repetitive

classic but not my jam

good bass, 1 decent song

Le Freak is 10/10 but the rest of the album doesn't match. Overall enjoyable but a weaker dance album.

Cocaine is a hell of a drug!

Disco. Chic. Niles Rodgers. "Le Freak". And seven *far less* striking titles with it. Guess you would need to include at least one decent disco LP in a list of 1001 essential albums. But somehow, I can't bring myself to take that record seriously, not to mention that overall genre. Prejudice on my part? You tell me. Number of albums left to review or just listen to: less than 800, I've temporarily lost count here Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: approximately a half so far Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: a quarter Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more important): the last quarter (including this one)

chic - cest chic (1978) notes - legendary disco/funk/r&b band - the song le freak is a massive hit - most of these songs are 5+ minutes long and dont really do much which is good if youre dancing but not so much for just listening - there are songs here that i really liked at first but got tired of by halfway through - enjoy the second half more than the first, more interesting fav - i want your love - one of the catchiest choruses of all time - like the strings and horns in the second half least fav - chic cheer - goes on a long time and is quite repetitive 2.5/5

Not bad by any means. Some solid groovy funk. Gotta love Le Freak. But mostly just a 45 minute groove. Gotta be in a real particular mood to put this one on

Ready for an exciting night at the club, I got out of bed, ran my toes through my shag carpet, and picked out a slammin' outfit. My yellow bell bottoms had me already shaking my leg and tappin' my feet. I paired it with a bright orange puffy pirate shirt, undid the top three buttons, and combed some mousse into my glorious chest hair. Before heading out to the dance floor, I picked up my lady and then there was one last stop at Big Jim's to score an 8-ball and do some lines in the bathroom. Then, all jazzed up, we hit the club. We were excited - Chic would be playing live, and we couldn't wait to dance to "Le Freak." When Chic came on, the place went wild. They opened with "Savoir Faire," and it was a little slow, so we sat down on a lush velvet sofa. They followed it up with "At Last I Am Free," and by the end of the song we were fast asleep. Who knew you could go from so high to so low!? I thought disco and funk were supposed to be more exciting than this. I woke up a couple hours later as the lights were coming on and the floor was being swept. Apparently we missed "Le Freak." Now I'm freaking out, because I missed the new dance craze! This is like that time I tried to go see Marcia Griffiths and Bunny Wailer, and I had the runs and never got to boogie woogie woogie. Serves me right for giving another one-hit wonder a chance.

If you like a song on this album you better like it a LOT because each song is repetitive af.

I didn’t hate this as much as I thought I would. I like the bass prominent grooves. However other than that, I don’t find much else interesting at all. The sound, on the whole, is vapid, which makes sense for a genre (disco, although this is more funky disco) known for cocaine induced all-nighters at the club.

I don’t like disco. This is okay disco making it worth a few points in that regard. Otherwise this is the most face value of albums I’ve heard all year. Meh.

Same as the other one.

Very very similar songs. Not my vibe so much. But le freak is a classic

Nice! Good old fashion disco. Except for a couple slower songs, album was fun. Can't say I'd go out of the way to put on, but wouldn't turn off, if it did. I was ok with it..... Liked Le Freak, I want your love and Happy man. 2 - 2.5

2.5 Funk disco at it's funkiest. I liked the sound, but every song felt like it went on longer than it needed to. Lyrically, pretty cheesy love and dance stuff. I really dug the shredding on Savoir Faire, but I wasn't as into the slower R&B stuff like At Last I Am Free. It's probably a lot of fun to dance to, but not sure I'd put it on in a casual scenario. Favorite songs: Chic Cheer, Savoir Faire, (Funny) Bone

Pas mal.

c'est mostly filler

"Le Freak" is really a banger but the rest of the album was a little forgettable for me. I'm thinking a 2/5. "Le Freak" is such a well known song that I feel it probably warrants a spot on this list, but it kind of feels like they just kept throwing darts at a board with trying the same type of song and then hit a bullseye with that one.

It was okay, some nice disco beats.

Couldn't get in to. Wasn't awful but probably wouldn't listen again.

4/10 Best song - le Freak

2.8 + Music to get your grandma on the dance floor. Not terrible overall, except “At Least I Am Free”, which is laughably stupid.

If I’m going to go to a skating rink, I’d rather them play 80’s for the retro feel. Disco’s influence can live on but this album really just feels like old shaggy carpet—appealing when new but there’s so much grime ground into it that it’s best to rip it up and move on. Maybe save a sample for a strategically placed rug.

Really not a style of music I enjoy. Had some okay parts, but far too repetitive and full of fluff.

Anyone who blames The BeeGees for killing disco hasn't listened to this

The only good thing about this album is Nile Rodgers' signature guitar riffs. Unfortunately everything else on it is unintentionally campy and cheesy.

Disco shouldn't exist.

Generic disco music with one hit, "Le Freak".

All the songs had the same 4 notes but I loved how extra some of them were

Sympatchique!

Creamy disco-funk. Nile Rodgers is a bit of a celeb these days so had high hopes. Sure the guitar playing was top notch and there were a few good tracks (notably a #1 US single 'Le Freak') but a lot of it was rather meandering and/or forgettable.

The first two songs were solid funky disco floor fillers. Excited, I listened on, the rest rather dull.

After the first couple of tracks it all went a bit downhill

Not a huge fan, good music not my style, never been a fan of late 70s to 80s discoesque albums

In the pantheon of musicians who reference themselves in song... Chic was chic before Jason Derulo was Jason Derulo. I wonder if his name can be used as an adjective... and thus lies the problem... I should be paying attention and enjoying their music.

Boomer moms rejoice!

It's very camp disco. Not really my thing. It's good for what it is. Le Freak is a high tempo fun hit but in the first half of the album, Happy Man is the strongest track with a sort of Madnessesque hook. The good - Happy man.

Le Freak.

Ihan eheä kokonaisuus, vaikkakin tuntui ettei biisi vaihtunut missään välissä. Chicciä siellä ja vähän Freakiä täällä

Not my bag

Ok 2/5

One banger on this album, i dont think they tried too hard for the rest of it 2 stars

Voto 2 citando l'ultima traccia : "Just one more thing Remember the whole world's a circus Don't you be the clown"

Pretty good, enjoyable but not amazing

well i know 'le freak' thats it. its not a live album right? nice nice start. this is disco music right. well intro got old about halfway through but here is the hit i guess. third songs nice, surprised there were no lyrics at all, Spotify lyrics were showing something i wonder if there's another version or where musicxmatch got the lyrics from lol. fourth songs nice but im already bored of this sound. whole album flows weird. 'i want your love' is the other (smaller) hit i think. 'at last i am free' is very nice, going to my playlist for songs over 7 min long. im done and im merely whelmed.

Groovy for sure, but fairly repetitive with very little variety. The songs could have been cut in half and nothing would have been lost. The worst song on this album, "At Last I Am Free" is the longest at over 7 minutes, and it did not deserve the fire bass runs it featured. I did enjoy the vibe, though, since disco strings are my aesthetic, but I wouldn't listen to this again. Listen to "Le Freak" and call it a day.

Great at the start, goes down hill fast

p funky.

All this does is bring back memories of the "Sounds of the 70s" compilation CD commercial that was always on TV in the 90s.

Not my type of music

Too 70s for me

It's fine. "Le Freak" the obvious standout. Some good grooves, but I like it more funky George Clinton.

Funky. Just not something I'll listen to.

I'm definitely not a chic guy

what a ride.. lol

lit just repeats chic over and over again

I have not heard this before. I know Le Freak but that’s it. This starts off with a good funk beat and goes in Le Freak, so it seems promising, then it moves on from dud to dud until the final track which brings back some of the energy of the first two. Surprised to see such a dull disco record in here when there is so much better disco out there. It might make sense if this was a really influential album or the best of a certain style, but all this really has going for it is one hit song.

katastropha

Ugh.. Disco Sucks. 1

Ugh more of the same crap...

Thanks to this album I learned a bit about Disco Demolition Night at Comiskey Park. Reading about this event was definitely better than listening to the album. Perhaps going forward I will be less vociferous in my criticism of disco music, though.

👎🏻

Sucked

Sehr repetitiv, das musikalische Material wäre in jedem Song bereits nach 2-3 Minuten völlig ausgeschöpft. Durch die Überlänge nervt es stellenweise sogar.

Le Freak was great, the rest was not. Merely average work, with his best way in front of him!

Too groovy and not my taste in music

Bad elevator music

boring boring boring boring

I like the band but boy that album was boring. Most songs were dull.

I appreciate the inclusion, but I sure don't like the music...

Repetitive. Smooth. Yeah, this conjures up everything chic.

Not really my thing. Found myself wanting to turn it off or skip songs. 1.5/5

0.5/5 "There's no doubt that Chic are the greatest and most enduring disco band..." (Spotify bio) - yeah no, you're actually far from it. Never heard of them apart from "Le Freak", and for this band to think that they're the epiphany of disco/funk music is beyond reason. Their arrogance will be judged upon. Just go ahead and ignore Boney M., ABBA, the Bee Gees, Kool and the Gang, Ottawan and so many others who made better and more influencal music than you did. Objectively it's not great disco music either, I could come up with a dozen songs from the top of my head that can outmatch this whole album by themselves. So yeah, Nile Rodgers, please go and fuck yourself, thanks. Originally 3/5, but -2.5 stars for arrogance. Don't think you're more important than you are, because you're not.
