Nile Rodgers is obviously a genius, trailblazer, pioneer what-have-you, but this shit is pretty boring outside of 'Le Freak'.

Leuk lied Le Freak, zonder context enorm chill. Nu luister ik voor het eerst het album wat erbij hoort… dan verandert de confiture ineens in jam. Niemand weet precies wat het verschil is, maar confiture is wel specialer dan jam. Zo speciaal als Le Freak eerst voor mij voelde, zo saai is het lied nu. Dat hele album heeft dezelfde sound… daardoor is alle jeu wel af van Le Freak, op zijn minst als je het samen hoort met de rest van dit album.

The first few songs were good but then it got quite repetitive

take a drink every time chic says "chic" and end up in the hospital 10 minutes in slightly less "every song is 10 minutes too long and the same" than Risque...but every song is 10 minutes too long and the same.

This music has come and gone and does not belong on the list.

I listened to it for a bit, and honestly, it was just ok. It seemed to be more instrumental, groove music, rather than lyric heavy. I assume this was meant for the 70s discos back in the day, when people were bumping lines and grinding hips. If I was in that area, I bet I would have a different appreciation for the album. Very pedestrian funk, admittedly paving the way for disco but not in a particularly exciting way. I was expecting a lot more from this, especially with how iconic Le Freak is, however that one ends up being the strongest track. Everything else kind of just blends together. Le Freak is the obvious hit here, but top 1000 album of all time? These 4 minute songs seem endless because they don't really go anywhere.

Not really for me

Okay so C’est Chic was a bit of an odd album. I can see why it’s genre is dance and I did actually know one of the songs (Le Freak) but other than that I didn’t really know what I was getting into. A couple of the songs were just a bit weird including the last song which was just people laughing with music playing (fittingly titled (Funny) Bone. Overall it was okay, a bit odd at times. Top three: Le Freak, Savior Faire and Sometimes You Win

Starts off with a cool disco sound in which, if you listen hard, you can just about detect the early notes of house music. But the style becomes repetitive very quickly, especially the dull dives into R&B romance.

As usual, great bass lines from Bernie. I gotta say as much as I was vibing to it, I did find myself tuning out here and there. Repetitive maybe? Or it just kinda sounded too similar?

Found this to be oddly languid for a disco album (or I guess what I expect out of a disco album). Didn’t do much for me sonically, but the album cover is fire.

I'm going to assume this sounds better if you have a head full of cocaine and you're dancing your ass off, but for me, sitting on the couch sipping a cup of coffee, it's pretty terrible. Incredibly repetitive instrumentals, trite lyrics... it sucks. I gave it two points for some of the funky bass lines, otherwise it would have been a one.

Only really liked Le Freak and I Want Your Love. Others I found irritating - Chic Cheer, Savoir Faire, At Last I Am Free and Sometimes You Win. I consider myself a fan of disco, but maybe I'm not since I'm giving this such a low rating?!

I was actually slightly disappointed when I realized what this album actually was, and that it wasn’t fully French. Thought I’d maybe have an opportunity to use my sweet Canadian public school education. Chic cheer was incredibly boring to me. I know it’s not supposed to be anything big and special as an opener, but I wanted more. Le Freak, well, just because it’s highly popular dance music doesn’t mean it’s that good. Like, sure, it’s fun, but as I didn’t grow up dancing at the club to this, it’s not something that I love and/or hear often. Savoir Faire was pretty in its own right. I’m appreciating instrumental tracks more and more as I go through this list. I don’t really have any thoughts about Happy Man. I want your love was more enjoyable as I felt it had more substance than some of the other tracks. Meaning, it had verses. The chorus was still very basic. I did like the horns though. At last I am free: again, not hugely interesting but not offensive. Sometimes you win: alright, had some pep to it. The laughing sound effects in funny bone were so annoying to me. The instrumental was fine, but ugh the effects were so annoying. 2.5/5 ⭐️ 95/1089

Perfect example of disco. Some silky smooth bass playing. At least one rock-solid hit. And, that's about it. I don't know man, I guess this just isn't quite for me. Once upon a time this was the basic popular option for a lot of people, and now it still feels like basic pop but dated by 50 years. The album cover is such a vibe. Decent disco, some songs were a bit annoying though.

This album came out a month and three days before my mam was born which is crazy to think about. Incredibly groovy, of course. Fav song is ‘Le Freak’.

Couple of good tracks, but mostly did nothing for me. Could go my whole life without ever hearing Le Freak again.

Of course I know the big single here. The rest just doesn't interest me.

If I was Mark Watney and my only available musical option while being stranded on another planet was late seventies disco records, I would walk straight out that airlock and never look back.

It was disco that was fine enough and made me want to dance a little. But after the third song it all felt the same and nothing seemed unique or special. Just background music playing at an Old Navy.

I lived through this era - I remember the High School divides between “Disco” versus Zepplin and Van Halen - I would say that battle resolved itself a LONG time ago and this album wasn’t on the winning side. It was definitely of it’s time but it hasn’t aged terribly well.

Out of the four disco albums I’ve had on this generator so far, that has absolutely been the most disappointing :(

Disco sucks

It was nice of CHIC to lay down the samples that would same day be used in better songs. I did like the vocal performance in At Last I Am Free

- is this the diary of a wimpy kid song album? - yes it is, hell yeah - le freak actually goes insane - these baselines are so good - "happy man, happy man" - Fuck that bell going with the melody on "I want your love" is so good - "Just remember the whole worlds a circus, don't be a clown" - Definitely more of a background album for me, but enjoyed it for sure

It's fairly inoffensive, I suppose. after the album finished, four songs by four different disco artists played and I could not tell a difference. So when it all sounds very much the same, how is this one the one to listen to before you die?

My opinion is that there is one song on this album that people should hear before they die, but not this entire album. And I think "Good Times" (not on this album) would be more essential than "Le Freak."

Okay, so there are some interesting grooves on this album, but as a whole this album is kind of boring. I was kind of excited as it started - "Chic Cheer" is a fun opener and it was cool to hear the source of the sample of this Mary J. Blige song from my high school days. "Le Freak" is obviously a classic but it goes on for too long (although I suspect this is partly in order to help get more play in the discos back in the day). It just kind of gets boring after that. A lot of these songs are long but to no end, there are no dynamic changes or big musical mix-ups in them... they just sort of keep going and going. "At Last I Am Free" is one of the most boring songs I've heard in a long time, it just does NOTHING. I appreciate Nile Rodgers and certainly respect the career he's built and the influence he's had on so many songs and musicians, but this album just doesn't do it for me at the end of the day. Honestly, if all of these songs were no more than 4:30 in length, I probably would have rated it a little higher. I think the only tracks I would listen to again are "Chic Cheer", "Sometimes You Win", and "(Funny) Bone".

This album is not intended for me. I feel awkward dancing and, using context clues, they seem to really want you to dance. It does liven up a Thursday morning replying to emails though. Is that as good? I liked Savoir Faire. It's a skilled instrumental track. I'm also 95% certain this album set the record for most times chic has been said on an album, so that's something of note.

So here’s the problem with this album, it’s got a lot of fluff. The three tracks that stand out the most are the two massive hits “Le Freak” and “I want your love”, plus the third track is an insane instrumental track named “Savoir Faire”. But the thing that undermines the album as a whole is everything else just feels like filler and it’s super forgettable. I guess if the songs had been more complicated and there was more ideas and songs brought to the table I think this album could’ve been better.

Le Freak is a disco classic that reminds me of roller skating rinks. Most of the rest of the album gets pretty tedious pretty quickly.

truly not this album’s fault that it is received such a low rating by me. if you were to ask me what my least favorite music is i’d tell you “r&b, disco, and anything from the 80s.” thus sadly this album was destined to fail in my rankings. obviously it is critically acclaimed and well loved so i’m sure they’ll survive this criticism. like i said it isn’t that the album is bad; i just don’t like the genre at aaaaall. obviously nile rodgers is a genius and i love his work with daft punk. boosted this from a one to a two out of respect for his influence and the fact that the instruments are so brilliantly played. for that reason, savoir faire was also my favorite song off the album. goddamn 80s.

Apart from the massive hit single "Le Freak", (which is still a favourite with people from my generation), and possibly their lesser hit single "I Want Your Love", this is a fairly mediocre Disco R&B album from the late 1970s.

Disco funk is odd to begin with, and while the album starts strong, it really drags at the end. Repetitive songs should not be 7 minutes long.

Ok but actually why is this album included on this project? It’s not awful, but it’s basically just disco. I guess maybe they needed an emblematic disco album? Also, At Last I Am Free was genuinely annoying.

In a 1978 review The Los Angeles Times referred to the bulk of this album as “Pedestrian Disco”. As Borat would say, “High Five”. If C’est Chic was a movie it would be called the Wizard of Chiq and the first half of the album would be it meandering around on a black-and-white dance floor looking for home and then voila, I Want Your Love would blast it into sweet sonic disco/funk techinicolor and send Dorothy home to Kansas in red stillettos. Finally, I don’t think it’s necessary to talk too much about the omnipresent wedding dance floor smash hit le freak. With the rising cost of inflation, no one is going to be able to afford to have weddings which means less emphasis on the hits. Instead they’ll be at home checking out the deep cuts like I Want Your Love. If I only had a freak. Stand Out Track - I Want Your Love

Lots of disco vibes and some 80’s soft rock. Favourite tracks, Sometimes you win, Le Freak. Not going to add this to my normal playlist anytime soon. I understand how it is considered influential though as I heard several other bands and songs in a few of their tracks.

You know you're in for trouble when as a band you try to turn your name into something as they did with Chic Cheer. Much like someone who always uses the term Chic when talking about fashion this album overstays it's welcome.

BROWN CHICKEN, BROWN COW. Savoir Faire was the best produced Porn music I've ever heard. All I saw was big fro-y bushes getting wrecked. Where's John Holmes? Which song does Debbie Do Dallas to? The plot to Deep Throat is her clit is in the back of her throat. A bit too glossy & poppy for my taste. I like my funk to be dirtier than this but still funky nonetheless. Le Freak is really all you need to hear. 2

When I realized that I listened to le freak again and it is kind of a weird song. Its still catchy but the other songs will soon be forgotten by me.

Well, 'C'est' was a quick breezy disco album. Then came the track, "At Last I Am Free," which I'm not sure is supposed to be taken literally by the listener. This 7:13 (good numbers!) long track is a dirge that could be cut at least in half. The rest of the album is just ok anyway, highlighted by a classic disco track. Top tracks: "Le Freak," "I Want Your Love"

It wasn’t the worst thing I’ve heard, but not quite three stars. Maybe 2.65? I think the songs were extremely repetitive and not very interesting. The instrumentals were ok so that’s why it’s not rated lower and there were a couple songs that were pretty decent.

Ampak spet, ponavljajoči se ritem in ponavljajoča se besedila - it doesn't do it for me. Glede na to kokrat vmes pogledam kok cajta je minil in z grozo ugotovim, da še pol komada ni minil, tole dons ni tok fajn. Se mi zdi, da še za kšno žurka playlisto ne bi bli te tadolgi komadi, ker so tok preveč repetitive, da bi še pijan pogruntal, da je že nekam dolg cajta isto. Oziroma, bi človek začel bit kr paranoičen glede stopnje pijanosti. Kr naenkrat balada? Spet s tok malo besedila, da se ti do konc komada skor zmeša. Iiiin, nazaj v disco. Yay, zadnji komad! Brez besedila! Uf...

Cover 4 Le Freak is a fun enough song if it comes on the radio or something. It's not one I search for or ever have some desire to listen to. I won't necessarily skip it if it's in a playlist either. The rest of the album is ok but not very rememberable.

It is an ok album to groove to for a bit but I wouldn’t ever choose to listen to it.

Perfectly fine disco R&B that just isn't my thing. Not even a big fan of Le Freak. Savoir Faire is probably the best track on the album with its Clapton-esque guitar, but the vast majority of the album has an issue with the songs being way too long. Every song could have used one to four minute pruning. Especially songs like At Last I'm Free which is dreadfully plodding and didn't need to be seven minutes long. And if you thought DJ Kaled was bad with announcing his name, check the first two songs on this album, haha.

Kind of catchy but not for me I think

A bit bland and forgettable

Apparently this is a really influential album. For disco. Which begs the question, if the album is influential to a terrible genre, is it still influential? I've read a lot of reviews about dumb lyrics on albums here, but some of these songs sound like they belong at a cheerleading competition. Bonus point for the bass.

Music for dance. Can't fault the musicianship or singing etc. But not really my thing Songs very light and superficial.

A very light album aside from "le freak". Everything is very mellow and chill. Enjoyable.

I'd already heard a few of the songs and I mostly enjoyed those more than the others. Overall, it's not probably not an album I'd listen to again but I understand why people enjoy it.

Lots of classic hits but boring

Decent album. A couple of classics but nothing that gets me super into them.

This album succeeds in bringing back memories but not very happy ones. This stuff and the like was played constantly at the local Palais De Dance, AKA The Mecca or any other nightclub of your choice. There was only one reason or sometimes two reasons why I went there and the music wasn’t any of them. In fact nightclub music was a good excuse not to go at all. That and the warm watered down beer. So in principle I hate Chic music. Big however here though because Mr Rodger’s and his Chiccette’s have somehow become National Treasures. Locally they have become an annual institution appearing at the Halifax Piece Hall to which members of my family and friends go and come back with many tales of how great the gig was. So much so that they try to convince me to go. As I speak their next appearance happens to be next week. My rating of this album signifies whether I will be there or not. 2/5 24/8/25

Nice bass. Talented band, but overall pretty weak songs and shallow boring lyrics.

Two albums by these guys in a week… this one wasn’t any better, I’m afraid. Fine for dancing probably, but not so much for listening.

Good but not really for me

Le Freak we used to cover for a reason; the rest of the album dances around that great tune.

It’s hard to separate listening to a disco album from envisioning what it’d be like to hear it inside a disco, and so while CHIC is maybe the quintessential disco group, there’s really only a couple songs that are just enjoyable as standalone songs. That’s not to say this is bad music - Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edward’s are master craftsmen and bring a smooth, level playing style to dance along to. It’s just that beyond the hits, there’s not a whole lot there to dig deeper into.

Very groovy. Le Freak is of course a classic and great dance hall jam. The instrumentation on Savoir Faire was nice, good base and some fun noodling. Didn't really like many of the tracks with vocals and songs seemed quite formulaic. All in all, not bad, but not great.

Sometimes LPs from the pre-cd era sounds like 2 singles and padding because there's no such thing in the 70s or 80s as a major label band who puts out a single that doesn't appear on a full length. I was surprised that this is Chic's second lp, because the single to padding ratio suggested it was a cash grab for a band that would a few great singles and crap lps. I remember Le Freak at roller rink birthday parties when I was in primary school, and not a cocaine-fueled LA poolside party where everyone is wearing beige, so its hard to look at this 40+ years later and see it as essential.

A couple of catchy groovy disco dance tunes but suffers from being overly repetitive. It’s clear they influenced a whole movement but on its own musical merits not very inspiring.

Just a great "of the moment" record. Disco, funky, NYC, 70s, dirty, coked-out, Halston/Warhol, dance music. Who but Chic knew the depth of talent assembled to create this zeitgeist of an album. Nile Rodgers created a guitar vibe so catchy and funky that he charted Top Hits with versions of it for 40 something years, now. Le Freak is iconic, Savoir Faire is a nice elevator music jam, I Want Your Love is lovely and sexy. Good clean funky fun in the wild 70s. How quaint a time that was, huh?

Fun and liked more than I thought I would but don’t need to revisit. Can recognize that this has been sampled a lot.

Le Freak was a big enough tune in its day to capture the attention of a clueless 9 year old, so that's saying something. I also remember seeing this album cover and fantasizing about how rich they must be to live in such a nice house with such fancy clothes. Now, as a still clueless middle-aged man, I appreciate the potent musicianship behind this band and I also have a soft spot in my heart for bands that sing about themselves. But the songwriting is not very good on this album, unfortunately. One great tune, three fair-good ones and then junk. I think maybe these guys were more of a singles band?

I mostly just listened to the bass through the entire album. I'd give the bass a solid 5/5, then rest of it is a mere 2/5.

Interesting R&B album, some of the songs had a good beat to it. Otherwise not my genre.

Pre-listen notes: I fucking hate the disco genre, so I reckon this will be a big ol’ goose egg for me. But I guess I signed up for this, and disco was bound to show up eventually. I’ll be a sport and give it a shot, but I don’t expect to finish this one. Just getting into the record: I don’t hate the bass lines and the jazzy guitar bits. The drums (riding the hell out that hi-hat) are kinda killing me; I think this is generally what makes disco a challenge for me. The unchanging repetitive nature of the drums just drone on and drive me crazy. Actually, I’m 2 tracks in and finding these songs to be overlong because of the repetition; why say in 2 minutes what can be extended to 10? Maybe that’s an exaggeration, but it doesn’t feel like it. That said, I’m not dreading continuing this just yet. There are some redeeming qualities in the musicianship and production; this record, so far, is clean and tight. I actually like some of the instrumental sections for the jazz licks. “Savoir Faire” is a highlight. But, this record is really not my style, I guess. Tight musicianship, and the bassist is really killer, but the music itself is pretty tough for me to get through, and I’ll not be revisiting it. Disco just sucks. 2.5/5

Every song drags on too long. Repetitive. Two big singles are bangers though.

Ehhh it's okay but it could be way better. Sonically, i like the tones and general vibe of the album but I feel a lot of these tracks could do with more development or differentiation from each other. Although they're groovy, some of the tracks linger around without really going anywhere Also, the lead guitarist is overplaying to compensate for this lack of development in my opinion. The bends they do with this tone aren't very pleasant either, sounds like he's fighting the guitar, in a bad way. Funky and unoffensive but a bit boring. Would do great in a new Alvin and the Chipmunks movie... Fav tracks - Le Freak Worst track - Chic Cheer - savoir faire

The jason derulo of the 70s, god this band want to make sure you know their name. Obviously it’s hard not to like the groove that Nile Rodgers brings to a tune, but at times it’s like the record is stuck and cant move onto the next part. I didn't think i would say this but Fatman S coop made more of Chic Cheer than Chic did. Le Freak is a stonewall classic and enough to make me overlook that lyric (i know it’s Chic, enough already) Savoir faire was not what i was expecting and not in a good way. Bring back the vocals telling me who it is as i honestly wouldn’t have known this was by Chic. Another dull if funky track and then another classic in I Want Your Love. Why do we get some momentum going and then dash it with a slow dirge track. Sometimes tries its best to get us back on track with a funky Niles bass-line but still feels like filler. (Funny) bone has a great groove to it and the lack of anything that could reasonably described as lyrics works in its favour

I was only a wee lad in 1978 when Le Freak was a hit. I was developing my own taste in music but still mostly listened to my little brown transistor radio. I didn't know what freak out meant, or anything about Nile Rodgers or funk music so I was intrigued when this came up as my album yesterday as I could hear it in a whole new context. I honestly haven't been as disappointed in anything I have been assigned more than this album. Aside from Le Freak, there really isn't anything interesting here, and even that is ruined because the first song which precedes it is pretty much them singing C'est Chic over and over again so by the time I got to the second song I was already tired of hearing those words. The rest of the album is honestly just more of the repetitive lyrics and melodies almost to the point of it being either laughable or rage inducing. The R&B stuff is uninspired and it just seems to go on forever. The sweeping funk guitar is executed perfectly but even that got tiresome. I expected so much more from this album.

This might be a classic in some circles, but for me, it’s a tough listen. If you enjoy hearing the same phrases repeated over and over for four minutes straight — long before EDM made that kind of repetition feel cool — then this might be your thing. But for anyone looking for variety or depth, this album wears out its welcome fast. Most tracks feel like extended loops with very little payoff, and the vocals often come off as background noise rather than anything truly engaging. It’s glossy, danceable, and polished, but it all starts to blur together pretty quickly. The one real highlight is “Savoir Faire” — a smooth instrumental that lets Nile Rodgers’ guitar work shine.

Ok. Dated and not that exciting.

This is a classic case of Side A is way better than Side B, as was the case for many albums of that time. Fun listen, especially the disco dance cuts, but it definitely fades in the album. If you never heard Sometimes You Win, I'm not so sure you're really missing out. I honestly liked the instrumentals and wish there was more. The female singers were far and away better than the male counterparts, and the songs are worse when they are front and center. If someone threw this on at a party, I think it'd be a good record to show you have taste and like to have fun. No need to go into that big of a deep dive. On a scale of -5 to 5, this is a 2.

It's a pleasant listen, but I'm just not a disco queen. Great bass on I Want Your Love.

Well, I personally like the disco songs better than the two non-disco songs... at least I liked the two disco hits "Le Freak" and "I Want Your Love", plus "Sometimes You Win" (the other three disco tracks were definitely subpar disco filler.) But if there is one think I never liked about Chic as a whole is the kind of faceless female harmonies they employ. I remember noting that on the Sister Sledge album, as one thing that kept me from really digging that album. But at least with Sister Sledge, there was strong lead vocal to carry it. This it just kinda falls a bit flat, even on the hits. Musically, I can actually dig the disco grooves, but all in all this is bland when it's not bad... "At Last I'm Free" was quite frankly the most boring song in the set. I almost fell asleep walking my dog. (4.6) ★★

Kinda lame, in my opinion. The hit is definitely a classic, but I wouldn't call it good. I don't get it.

First 2 tracks are real bangers: “chic cheer” and “Le freak”. But the rest of the album feels a bit one dimensional and derivative. Some slick bass lines.

This is the cheesiest album and aged terribly. The only thing I liked was the guitar, everything just did not work. For the first few seconds of "Le Freak" I thought I would be enjoying it but after a minute I was already done with it and noticed it's flaws. Overall did not enjoy.

Yeah yeah yeah, Nile Rogers is a legend, and I'm sure Chic were highly influential in the world of disco, but fuck me this is repetitive at times. Excessively so. The best tracks are the ones that break up the monotony or are that catchy it doesn't matter too much. For example 'Happy Man' does repeat but it's an effortlessly cool song and a huge ear worm so I can kind of forgive it. 'Savoir Faire' is the best track. There's fantastic guitar solo playing throughout this great instrumental. An easy highlight. These two I'd happily add to a playlist and I wish they were up there with Chic's most popular singles so we could hear them until the end of time. In contrast, the opener and 'Le Freak' (which I've never liked anyway) are ridiculously unvaried. There are good riffs throughout the album but the song lengths are a lot longer than they have any right to be. I get that it's probably the point but it's not for me. It's cool, groovy and funky with great guitar, bass and production, but it gets boring in places and I didn't enjoy this a huge amount.

Too much disco for one sitting

This album felt like it took a lifetime to get through. It was fine, but I wouldn't listen to it ever again.

Overall this was actually better than I expected. Certainly not the worst funk influenced disco, just pretty boring and repetitive, even if there are a couple good songs in there.

The baselines really steer this album away from the ditch. They’ve got the grooves, but the ultimately the hokieness of disco prevail and turn me off.

1978, j'avais huit ans, autant vous dire que mes préoccupations musicales se limitaient à savoir si le générique de fin de Goldorak était plus cool que celui du début. Pendant ce temps, le monde de la musique "adulte" vivait une drôle de schizophrénie. Les punks, avec leurs crêtes et leurs épingles à nourrice, hurlaient "No Future" et annonçaient la mort du rock'n'roll, pendant que, dans des clubs qui m'étaient aussi inaccessibles que la face cachée de la lune, une autre révolution, bien plus scintillante et hédoniste, battait son plein. Le Disco. Et au sommet de cette montagne de paillettes, il y avait Chic. Pas un groupe, une entité, une machine de guerre sonique pilotée par deux génies absolus : le guitariste Nile Rodgers et le bassiste Bernard Edwards. Quand le livre "1001 Albums" m'impose de me pencher sur C'est Chic, je ne peux m'empêcher de sourire. C'est un peu comme demander à un critique de cinéma de parler de La Fièvre du Samedi Soir. C'est un monument, un marqueur d'époque, un truc tellement énorme qu'on ne sait plus par quel bout le prendre. Et pourtant, je vais être direct, comme d'habitude : ce disque est une formidable arnaque. Attention, ne me faites pas dire ce que je n'ai pas dit. L'arnaque n'est pas musicale au sens strict. Rodgers et Edwards sont des orfèvres, le son est d'une propreté clinique, les arrangements de cordes sont millimétrés, la section rythmique est un métronome sous cocaïne. C'est l'incarnation même de la sophistication, un son "black" qui a réussi à s'extraire de la sueur du funk pour enfiler un smoking blanc et siroter du champagne. C'est une musique de producteur, pensée, polie, lustrée jusqu'à l'aveuglement. Et au milieu de ce disque, il y a la bombe atomique, le Tsunami, l'Everest du groove. "Le Freak". Putain, "Le Freak". Même après presque 50 ans, ce morceau reste une énigme. Comment un truc aussi simple peut-il être aussi parfait ? Ce riff de guitare syncopé, ce "chank-chank" qui a défini le son de Rodgers pour les décennies à venir. Cette ligne de basse de Bernard Edwards, qui n'est pas une ligne de basse mais une putain d'autoroute à quatre voies pour déhancher du croupion. Et cette montée, ce "Aaaaah, freak out!", qui a dû provoquer plus de naissances que la pilule contraceptive. Ce morceau, c'est le Disco dans son essence la plus pure. C'est la bande-son de cette parenthèse enchantée, entre la libération sexuelle et l'arrivée du Sida. C'est la communion des corps sur la piste, peu importe la couleur, le sexe, les préférences. C'était une utopie dansante de 5 minutes et 29 secondes. Dans ma boutique de disques, des années plus tard, "Le Freak" était sur TOUTES les compils disco. C'était la caution, le sésame. Tu ne pouvais pas vendre une compile disco sans ce titre, c'était illégal. C'est un morceau 5 étoiles, un 4 sur 4 puissance 10. Alors, pourquoi, nom de Dieu, je lui colle un misérable 2 sur 5 à cet album ? Parce que "C'est Chic", l'album, souffre du pire syndrome qui soit en musique : le syndrome du tube monstrueux. C'est un single de légende accompagné de ses sept frères et soeurs un peu fades, un peu cons, ceux qu'on invite au mariage parce qu'on n'a pas le choix. Une fois que la tornade "Le Freak" est passée, on se retrouve avec quoi ? Avec de la musique d'ascenseur de luxe. "I Want Your Love" ? Oui, c'est joli, c'est suave, ça a bien marché aussi. Mais honnêtement, c'est la même recette, juste avec un peu moins d'épices. On sent la formule, le calcul, c'est tellement bien produit que ça en devient froid, distant. On admire la technique, mais on ne ressent plus grand-chose. Et le reste de l'album se déroule comme ça, dans une sorte de ronronnement chic et terriblement prévisible. C'est une machine à danser, certes, mais une machine un peu trop bien huilée, qui a oublié de mettre un peu de cambouis, un peu de sueur, un peu d'âme. C'est là toute l'ironie. Chic respecte les codes de la soul, mais en les passant à la javel. C'est une soul aseptisée, débarrassée de sa douleur et de sa rage pour ne garder que l'élégance. C'est magnifique, mais c'est un peu vide. Une fois l'euphorie de "Le Freak" retombée, l'ennui pointe le bout de son nez. On se surprend à regarder sa montre en attendant que le disque se termine, ou, plus probablement, à remettre le premier morceau. C'est donc ça, mon verdict. "C'est Chic" est un album essentiel pour comprendre une époque, pour comprendre la puissance d'un single qui a défini une génération de fêtards. Mais en tant qu'album, en tant qu'oeuvre cohérente à écouter du début à la fin dans le cadre de ce projet "1001 Albums", c'est une déception. C'est une expérience frustrante. Un album à écouter pour sa culture, mais pas forcément pour son plaisir. Sauf pendant 5 minutes et 29 secondes. Vous savez lesquelles.

A couple well known disco songs that were big hits, but for the most part I found the album lacked that 70s groove that made the disco era so popular.

Couple of good jams but it felt too repetitive. Maybe if I was on the dance floor of Studio 54 I’d be more into it.

Not too bad of an album, enjoyed having this in the background, although at some point the songs would just be the exact the same 5 seconds but repeated over and over again (a great example being the last bit of Le Freak). Pretty decent, enjoyed it a bit.

Sounded exactly as expected, it's funky disco. Once you've heard le freak you basically have the measure of chic. Not a particular disco fan but it does completely nail the genre. Went by nice enough but would never intentionally return. They seem to have managed to make the most of the retro tour circuit, Nile Rodgers is everywhere too. 2.5 but more like a 2.

I expected I wouldn't like this, but actually didn't mind it. Less disco than I was expecting, and much more funky, which was a relief. Le freak does nothing for me, I want your love is better. Some of the guitars on other tracks were nice. I think it was savoir faire. Was losing interest by the end. Pleasantly surprised but still not quite my thing. 2.5
