Reviews (page 10 of 13)
A very polished album with impeccable production. It's somehow too polished, too shiny and largely unmemorable to me though. And it suffers from my main complaint about disco - most tracks last too long without actually going anywhere. Luckily the album is only 41 minutes, otherwise I'd have been going spare with boredom.
I love the grooves but the songs feel either too long or too short. Bet it would have been amazing live...
Disco sucks! But this has too much funk and soul be just disco. If anything, it's what was being ripped off by all the terrible disco songs that followed. Not great, and some tracks are just too long, but enjoyable enough as fairly chilled out background music.
Second chic album. Had their biggest song! Not terrible? Still disco.
AWWWW FREAK OUT!
FREAK OUT!
Very classy
Medio aburrido pero igual lo escucharía de vuelta
Not really a funk or disco fan, but to me many of the songs on this album seemed to me to be based in soft or light jazz which I do enjoy. The tones were smooth and enjoyable...the lyrics not so much. Overall, pretty nice listen.
Smooth funk is funky
Not bad, didn't know this album has the "Freak out!" song. Overall not that into disco
Disco era fun. So if it’s era, but still feels good.
Vive leFunk!
Good music but I’m not a fan of disco.
3/5 Best Track: Savoir Faire
Итс окэй. Лучшая песня - I Want Your Love
Ooooohhh .. We gettin' Funky today!
Music was ok, le freak is really good. Lukewarm, not amazing, but also not terrible.
From hearing the first song I had doubts then knowing the popular track number 2 I realised who the band was. Some moments I liked others not sure on but nice to listen to something different
I just wished they'd delete the first song, quite enjoyed the rest of the album though
I like it. Some good songs on there. Wasn't a huge fan of the opener due to them chanting "Chic" for 5 minutes it got boring. However it's cool listening to the riffs that made it's way into different genres of music. Like the opening riff on the opening song was used in "Fatman Scoop - Be Faithful" F.Song : I Want Your Love
The disco album. Better as an influence than as itself.
Nice funk album with that 70’s sound, very tasty guitar rhythms
Die Keyboards der elektrischen 70er.
Good disco fun!
A cool record but nothing that really impressed me. It was kind of generic.
3 estrellas
so repetitive, ugh. just annoying to listen to so far. it’s definitely growing on me, still not my preferred type of music.
Brings back college memories. Good dance music but not my main vibe.
LeFreak has to be one of the best disco songs ever. But that being said...it's disco. 😂 Some of the other songs just don't grab you and say play me again. With multiple vocalists on this record it's hard to get to know the group's true identity. But ahh freak out saves the day and pushes this from a two to a three star record. I found myself dancing at my desk on the two opening tracks, then being bored and asking myself when is lunch?
Great mood music!
gayer than abba and earth wind and fire but not as gay as the bee gees and prince, so in between…?
This was fine. I didn’t mind it, but I don’t feel the need to listen to it again.
I’ve seen Chic live, and it’s a super-fun dance party! Nile Rodgers is amazing and a huge talent, but I think if there’s a “best-of” album? That’s the way to go.
Simpsons reference: Loose reference, they parody the song We are Family by Sister Sledge which was written by Chic
A funky disco biscuit, worthy of spin to dance to, needed more funky tracks though.
Funking good
Smooth groove. A couple of outstanding songs plus a little too much filler. Fave Songs: Le Freak, I Want Your Love, Sometimes You Win, Chic Cheer
Solid disco/funk album with some crazy good musicianship. Not a fan of the overly long songs and repetitive vocals, but fun to listen to regardless. Fav tracks: Savoir Faire I Want Your Love
It's alright but I did find some tracks to be repetitive, either in lyrics or instrumentation.
Hit: Le Freak. Funky.
Fun music, but the vocals left a lot to be desired; they were pretty repetitive. The bass does a lot of the work making this album interesting.
Kyllähän I want your love toimii. Olisivat voineet opetella lausumaan ”le”. Muuten kiva
I have to admit that I was a bit disappointed by this one, based on the hype. What stands out is Bernard’s and Nile’s insane playing (especially Bernard’s bass riffing), but really the only standout tracks were the hits I was already familiar with. The rest of the album came off as solid enough filler that was of its time, but mostly forgettable formula tunes. Really, it’s the hits that are all I need from this one.
диско - пас)
I want your love is my favorite track. Some of the instrumental tracks sound like hold music
Good disco :)
Enjoyed it. Never listen to disco, but a fun change up.
3/5. This had some great songs and nothing lasted too long to be overbearing, still had some R&B influence involved that saved it from being too repetitive or annoying. The main hit single was enjoyable and the rest of the songs complimented a sense of a dance record you might hear in a mansion, instead of a club; pretentious but confident in its themes and aesthetic. Although it's not a repeated listen for me, it's a good one to have on.
Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: Yeah, nice and easy listening with some iconic tracks Favourite song: Track 5 - I Want Your Love
It's fine. Not a huge fan of Le Freak and it seems like background music to me. But It is alright.
Can say I was a Happy Man listening to this, but have to be in the right mood for it. Sometimes You Win and sometimes you don’t. This one won, but barely.
Nice album, not something Id listen to directly but would definitely have on in the background of a gathering
Fun
Funky, funky, funky. A little too background-y, even though the songs are bops. The first song drags on too long and the second half of the album does as well. It's better than other stuff I've rated with 3 stars, it'd be 3.5 if possible.
Tight! Freak out! Not sure I’ll listen again but glad I did
Hit: Le Freak. Funky.
AJ: I’m sure the hotel gang would love this for a bit. It’s funky as hell. Couldn’t do it all the time. Bet Al hated it lol
Aside from the classic single, forgettable.
cool
This was okay. Not a huge disco fan, but the bass playing was interesting enough to keep me listening. It's fine as background music.
Favorite Songs: Le Freak Happy Man Quite a good funk/disco album in a relaxed manner. Le Freak is definitely the most disco like song. Overall a fun listen even tho many of the songs sound quite similar.
Juste fine
man i really wanted to like this one. le freak and i want your love are bops. the rest are alright at best and snooze-fests at worst. at least i am free is SO boring. oh my god. i thought this was supposed to be a disco album but i guess we had to get some slow dance numbers in there. the instrumentation is great and of course they have an iconic sound, but boy this album is really uneven.
Couple of nice tracks and good to have on in the background whilst doing house chores
Kinda weird but enjoyable
Heard before. Mostly like the singles on this one. + Le Freak + I Want Your Love + At Last I Am Free + Sometimes You Win
lil weird. Cool to learn where Le Freak came from.
just a fun time, some songs go on for a little too long, but overall its alright
Actually surprisingly good album. Enjoyed the 3 song, had some bluesy roots.
Very vibey overall, almost too much so. I had a hard time staying focused. Good background music though.
i liked it, old disco funk
Very funky. Never listened to the whole album before and I’m glad I did.
Ég hef stundum sett CHIC á í bakgrunnstónlist. Þetta er ágæt plata. Gott að hlusta á en mikið um endurtekningu.
You can tell that this album was created in the late 70s. That being said, the album has a sound that separates it from the standard pop/disco albums of the time. The production pays equal attention to all instruments and vocals, showing that no one element dominates, or is carrying the rest of the band/album. The songs are a mix of well-known hits, instrumentals, and standard vocal tracks. Finally, the bass. There is a quality, style and technicallity to the playing that helps differentiate this album from its contemporaries. This is proven by the album's popularity at the time and by how it continues to influence artists decades after its release. Because of the influence the album I'm leaning toward a 4, but overall, rating a 3 for listenability and wanting to revist.
I was transported back to Happy Valley and the heart of Disco. Hopefully will get Donna Summers and Irene Cara selections soon
It’s classic just not my era
3/5 trots onödigt långt och tråkigt intro
"Le Freak" is one of the huge songs of the disco era, a real high-point of the genre. Also the only song from this album I had heard (and have). The whole album is very solid and stays in it's lane (disco / Funk), but does it well. Further, it <i>sounds</i> great (I'm listening to the 2018 remaster via Spotify). Bernard Edwards' bass is strong in the mix and quite enjoyable. All said, a good representative of the genre; C'est Chic was Billboard's 1979 R&B Album of the Year. All good, but not a genre I'm all that excited about. A very solid 3/5.
Outside of le freak this is the most background music ever.
I hate to say it, but it's soulless. Very accomplished and groovy, but there's no point to it.
Love the last lyrics of the album “whole world is a circus don’t you be a clown” Glad they didn’t keep it to disco dance, loved the ballads. But nothing really stuck besides le freak
Tidewise ok funk.
Songs are pretty similar, but it is a great sound
i adore 70s disco but was sadly underwhelmed by this. i expected more from the band that made "le freak."
Like the beats, not something I would listen to all the time.
Funky disco funk. Oldshool kinda funk. Not the cool Vulfpeck kinda funk. Still funk tho.
Highlight: Le Freak In a nutshell: slick but repetitive. This made for the dancefloor or at a late 70s discotheque. You just need to hear Le Freak, not much else from this album. Overall: 5/10
This record feels like being at a nightclub during the 70s wearing a flowy shirt and flared jeans, with not a single care but to have fun
le freak AKA "Freak out" is good, everything else boring. So repetitive and not much stands out.
Good
À jamais associé au nettoyage de frigo
First song had me dreading the next 40 minutes. Enjoyed Le Freak but I just thought it was going to be them trying to see how many times that could say "Chic" in one album. After that it was surprisingly alright. Something that my mum would listen to back in the day. Not my kind of music but I could vibe with it. Savoir Faire was an absolute banger. Great guitar.
Not a fan overall, classic, obviously, but the 1970's disco/funk is hardly my jam. Plenty catchy melodies on this one, Le Freak is a classic, obviously, so is I Want Your love, but I likely won't be coming back to this one anytime soon.
the famous song is good but its just not for me
mm.. funky...
3.5
Some classics on here, 3.5 great production
Solid disco music. A few classics and a few new ones for me that are fine.
At their funkiest, they're great. When they lean more disco, not so much.
Better than I anticipated. Still very redundant and with very little changes, but some decent grooves
um grande MOOD
Funky.
5.5/10 Tres underwhelm
okiii 7.5/10
I have a love-hate relationship with disco. I admire it for its history in gay and black scenes and enjoy the beautiful use of harmony, but on the other hand, I don't do cocaine, and it feels like everyone involved in this album did. You can't deny le Freak and I Want Your Love are classic tunes, but nothing else on the album reaches that height. I'm used to 8m long dance tracks, but usually they have some level of progression and variety, and some of these just go on and on. Again, as a collection of songs this is fine. Does it really work as an album? Not sure.
Le freak, c'est Chic.. Besides the songs I already knew the rest felt like filler. I appreciate their influence and the amount of other hits he's written or been involved in, but this album fell flat and was underwhelming.
Not really my thing despite sounding familiar to or influenced by things I really enjoy such as Steely Dan or Jeff Beck's Fusion albums. Yet, this is fun listen. I was impressed by the incredibly tight rhythm section and the bass grooves are the kind of thing I would want to learn to show off.
Ok so obviously the singles are the highlights, but who made Savoir Faire sound like the most nostalgic options menu theme from a video game soundtrack lmao
good disco, the popular tracks (le freak and i want you love) are the best ones, the rest aren't too shabby either, i specifically like happy man, but those 2 are the big ones.
Upbeat, feel good disco-y music. I liked most of the songs, but wouldn’t go out of my way to listen to them.
I'm a sucker for a dancey-funk tune. These songs were good, but not much more than that. I recognized a couple of these. Won't go out of my way to relisten
Didn't move me all that much. Feels like an overbloated album with two well known songs surrounded by filler. It's pleasant enough and I can understand its importance to multiple genres. But, I don't see me listening to it again. Thanks to its over exposure, I really don't care for "Le Freak." Also, I've never really cared for the singing style in Chic. It was a style that repeated so often through the 70s and 80s and it never worked for me.
Well... with Chic, you know exactly what you're getting - that classic, funky disco sound with the seemingly neverending tracks is their signature sound. This was an easy, if somewhat long, listen. 3/5
Fun but repetitive
Who doesn't like a bit of disco funk?
Fun dance album with some really good funk instrumentals. It feels like the songs drag on forever though. There needs to be more improvisation when it comes to tracks of this length. Favorite track: Le Freak
My second Chic album in a week! Still just as fun as Risqué. Excellent instrumentation and smooth delivery. Absolutely love “I Want Your Love” especially the bells throughout it. Nothing really offensive here but not going to blow any minds either.
I liked some of the songs, 3 stars
A fun romp
Muy bueno. Me dieron ganas de danzar con la gente grande.
This album is fun, obviously Le Freak is super catchy and the energy is really upbeat and fun, but the sound is just not my bag.
Partly heard before Saved 4/8 Top track: Le Freak
Le Freak has been stuck in my head for hours now. It's fun disco music, but not really anything I'd want to sit and listen to. I'd need a few drinks to really enjoy this.
Most of the songs a little too long. At last I am Free is dreadful. However, it grooves. The musicians are talented and the album is sequenced well.
LE FREAK! C'EST CHIC!! I WANT YOUR LOVE! CAPS LOCK!! I am quite surprised with this album, listened back to back with Culture Club, and I'm not feeling it as much as 'Colour by Numbers' but again, this record has a couple of bangers and the rest isn't terrible. 2.5 / 5 stars.
Entretenido pero a todas las canciones les sobran un par de minutos, tanto que resulta tedioso. Música hecha para bailar y olvidarse de los problemas sin pretensión alguna, pero con mucho glamour.
2 Chic albums on the list. Very generous. They're not bad, but they're pretty much the same. The songs are long and repetitive, with subtle changes in the arrangement. Perfect for dancing, not as much for listening. I'd keep this one on the list and remove Risque. Favorite song: funny bone
I would say fine. Got some jams, but not something that will have me leaping out of my chair.
kind of groovy songs feel like they’re taking forever to play out so minus some points
None of these songs were bad per se…just twice as long as they needed to be.
le freak classic
Leuk, Le freak natuurlijk een classic
Pretty good
Disco. Good disco, but still disco.
I'm not really crazy about disco in general, but as far as disco goes this is pretty good. It leans less on the cheese which really helps it.
Both better and worse than I expected. Best track: Le Freak
It’s got some of that funk. Some of that bass that’ll droop your face, some of the drum that’ll move your bum, and some of that sauce that’ll… make you wonder what it was like to be in a disco club when this was dropping. Odd genre, but the funk is why it remains relevant.
Le Freak.. So damn good song and brings me back to being a little kid. The album is good but not great. Totally a 3.5 but rounding down on this one.
Some top of their game Disco production on this record. I liked the more up tempo tracks.
Fine? It was fine. Disco isn't really my thing, but the good songs on this album are super catchy and I understand why I hear them at every wedding I go to.
Includes great songs for a party. Le Freak obviously. But also somehow boring, listening to the whole album from start to finish
3.5/5
Some classics on here, but man are they looooong classics. There’s just enough melodic fuel to keep these tracks churning for the full runtime without wearing on the listener, and at about 800 albums in knowing when to quit gets huge points in my book.
Wow
Hit: Le Freak. Funky.
Damn bruh this shit funky This is a great morning album Very fun
The songs are decent for a disco album, good even. Some of them felt long though and didn't change much. Everyone knows "Le Freak," but "I Want Your Love" and "At Last I Am Free" were also good ones.
Always good background and dancing.
Fun and groovy, le freak is great, the rest was still fun but not quite to the level of memorable.
p419. 1978. 3 stars. The sound of a thousand late 1970s nightclubs. Dated, but still fabulous - if you can't dance to this you need an undertaker. As with all disco albums, out stays its welcome after 15 mins when played outside its native habitat.
It’s kind of fun but not really my disco bag, man.
It’s all pretty listenable, but aside from the absolute banger of a single, not very memorable. To be fair I only played it once through, and while cooking, but while I enjoyed it at times, it bored me at others and it’s not calling me back for more.
Well listening to this album certainly set me straight on one thing. For over 40 years I’ve owned & listened to a 1980 Robert Wyatt single with Billie Holiday’s Strange Fruit on one side and a song called At Last I Am Free on the flipside - always assuming this was a Robert Wyatt tune. No siree Bob!!! It’s the longest track on this album & one of the best. And it couldn’t be more different than the other album highlight - the iconic Le Freak. The rest of the album is fine, but not compelling for me.
There's some iconic guitar work in here but overall just a bit too silky smooth for my tastes.
An undeniably enjoyable groove. This is an unavoidable toe-tapper. The lyrics are’t incredible and I’ve never been too big a fan of instrumentals, but they make up for it with simply how fun all these songs are. 3/5
I can’t stop dancing and doing cocaine.
41m 42s of CHIC is just about enough CHIC for any day.
Ik vind de muziek van CHIC erg leuk. Toch is dit niet zo'n heel bijzonder album. Gewoon goed te luisteren.
C’est chic, oui, et oh si funky mais dans l'ensemble juste comme ci, comme ça.
A nice fun listen.
Not my style
Fun and funky album. Starts to drag a bit in the back half, but otherwise pretty solid.
Certainly funky and groovy enough as an album, although it does go on a bit much for my taste at points, which was normal for the disco era, I suppose. Perhaps it would be better to listen whilst dancing, but not today, please. Otherwise, alright.
I don't have much to say about this one except it was an extremely easy listen. Pretty enjoyable too. I feel like the last 3 songs aren't as good as the others. Score: 65 Art: 70
Godt album!
Nice soul record with some ripping bass and guitar playing. Silk Sonic was 100% inspired by this record. Songs go on a little too long imo. Will come back to this from time to time.
Solid funk. The musicianship can't be faulted. A few stand out tracks - the singles. Some songs stretched out so far they fell flat.
The album starts really great. The upbeat songs are really fun. Just not suburb quality end to end. 3/5
little long but good
ok, not all late-70s disco, R&B, funk is bad. This is some funky shit
Look, it's great. Nile's guitar work, I mean, come on. But is it for me? I don't think so.
Le Freak is the most recognizable. Only listened to front half of the album. Funky.
Not as good as other CHIC records
Background music.
First time listening. "Le Freak" is the choice cut here, "Savoir Faire" is a smooth instrumental and "Happy Man" isn't too shabby. Classic disco/boogie maybe, but serves better as background music when you get to side B; the ballad "At Last I Am Free" is absolutely dire, and surely one of the most boring songs in the genre. This seems a smidge overrated to be considered bucketlist listening.
Funky and nice sounding. That Le Freak song is a stone cold classic, but the album feels long overall.
This sounds interesting.
C'est Chic is the second album by American R&B band Chic. It contains the hit song "Le Freak" that topped the US Hot 100, US R&B, & US Club Play charts in October of 1978, and remains semi-popular today. This funky disco, R&B album was Chic's most commercially successful and has been certified platinum in the US. I think it's always cool finding and listening to an album on this site that contains popular songs I heard when I was younger like "Le Freak". It's nice hearing the other tracks on the famous album for the first time and being able to enjoy them. C'est Chic is a funky album that's upbeat & easily danceable, and although it's not normally my music of choice I did like it.
Pretty much the epitome of disco. Fun but feather light. Sure gets you moving, so perfect when that's what you are after. Sometimes music is just for dancing to. Does it belong on this list? Yes, I think so. 3.5
I have to point out how awesome this album (and band) is from a design standpoint. I think visuals aren’t too far removed from music and its content. It’s great how in line the visual design is with the songs on the album. So utterly smooth with classy imagery. It’s nice to see an album cover that was created with a purpose and not a photo that looks like it was pulled from a random photo shoot with a parental advisory logo lazily slapped on. Anyway, some cool songs here, you can get why disco was a mostly era specific “fad,” but you also see why it was so popular. Faves: Le Freak, Sometimes You Win, Savoir Faire, Happy Man
There are some classics, but that's it.
HL: "Le Freak", "At Last I Am Free", "I Want Your Love" Where does this rank between the 70’s discotheque jams I’ve got so far on this list? EW&F’s “That’s the Way of the World” comes out on top, but this is pretty good too 3.5 February 5, 2023
So this is the band that sang the song freak out from my childhood in the 90's. The full song is not great. Neither is the album. 2.5
Un megahit. Alguna canción de funky animado, pero más de funky demasiado melódico. Un 3.
Hit: Le Freak. Funky.
Idk, not really into this sound.
Är ju ingen utpräglad discokille, men om jag var en utpräglad discokille skulle jag spela den här discon.
Some good upbeat songs on here. Some nice chilled grooves otherwise and some little hidden gems. I really like Happy Man.
Hress og skemmtileg plata. Diskó ofar rappi.
I enjoyed this, though the most popular songs are a bit annoying. Too repetitive for 4 stars
3 for me. It was a fun listen but I don't know if I see myself remembering to listen to it again in the future.
Free Cow! Some chicks and sheep. Not the lyrics, but this is what I always think of. An uneven album with some great songs, and some instrumentals that leave you wanting something more.
groovy sin ser fome/superficial, pero no va mais alla. 6.5/10
At the time this album came out, I despised all Disco and couldn't stand anything this funky to dance to. Years later, my views and listening habits have "matured" and I can appreciate the musicianship and production that went into this music. I still don't purposely listen to Disco, but I won't turn it off or rant about how it's ruining rock 'n' roll if it comes on. It is what it is and it's not the worst way of spending an hour.
Some interesting grooves but each song feels very long
Escuchable. No es mi estilo.
Aaaw Free Cow!
I wasn't particularly looking forward to this one, disco isn't really my thing. But I didn't hate it and actually caught myself grooving along a few times. I still don't think I can rate it particularly highly because its definitely not something I'll put on again and I did find it quite repetitive. I feel like they could have done some more to make the songs go more places but then again that's not what they were trying to do and I totally respect it, it just doesn't speak to me personally. I'll give it a 3 because it did pleasantly surprise me but it didn't blow me away.
dee eye ess see oh! Not really my thing, but pleasant enough, and I couldn't help hearing it through the lens of all the times it's been sampled and remixed and referenced. That's right, I hear things through lenses - what of it? Fave track - well, "Le Freak" is the one I know best I suppose....
this is pretty euro and pretty 70s late disco era le freak is the song known but on the whole nothing sticks out
Funk. All about it. Appreciate it. Saw them at Sevvy Park and it was boogie town. 3 stars.
I thought this was a good album. Some absolute classics in there as well. I will deffo listen to this again. Great small house gathering-food-drink-laughter music
grooovin I want your love var min favorit
Määääkta chill maan
Fun disco rhythms
Funky but repetitive
Lots of fun and great rhythms.
Good music.
I didn't know I had already listened to a music from this album, it was a nice surprise. Overall, it is a nice album.
Many songs dragged too long. Solid singles, but it felt that 2/3 of the album was filler.
I already like Le Freak and I Want Your Love. The rest is not too interesting. The songs are a bit repetitive, especially At Last I Am Free which goes on for more than 7 minutes.
Beaucoup aimé, ça groove, me donne le goût de danser.
Enjoyed at times, but honestly maybe a little long for the genre
I hear no discernible difference between this album by CHIC and the last album I had by CHIC (Risqué). Le Freak is a certifiable bop, obviously, but the rest is just overly repetitive generic disco filler. The first track, Chic Cheer was a complete waste of 4 minutes. It was very easy to get through, so that’s something.
There's some amazing stuff here, and the first couple of songs in particular are great, but the album does get a little repetitive as it goes on
This has the feel of an album that was made for a reason no one remembers. I'm not talking about disco itself, but rather a non-musical vibe that time forgot. Like it's actually movie scoring (eg. Shaft), a workout video tie-in for a now-dead/fat celebrity, or a demo for something - a marketing piece/technical showcase of a new studio deck, something along those lines. But in 2022, the original intent is long forgotten. Either way, harmless enough. 3/5.
a great disco album, i'm just not THAT into disco
I thought a Chic album would get a solid 3.5 from me (4 if I had my dancing shoes on at the time), but this does feel a bit like Le Freak, I Want Your Love plus a lot of filler. It must have some magic quality though, as singing the words 'at last I am free, I can hardly see in front of me' for 7 minutes over the same lethargic chord progression sounds like a terrible idea for a song, but I grew to like it.
Boogie music
3.5/5 Funky and very catchy! I knew the songs but not the artists. Sometimes too repetitive for me, overall a good album! Favourite songs: - Le freak - I want your love - At last I am free
Classic album. Quite soothing and good
Oh yeah baby it's smooth, it's so chic
Amazing album cover Chic are a strange one, have some of the best party songs I know, but a lot of filler on their albums (133M vs 640k streams on this album show that on Spotify). Le Freak and I Want Your Love are 2 of the best disco songs but their was a lot of other more boring songs on this
Paar toffe hits zoals Le Freak en I want your love, voor de rest middelmatig.
Great, catchy, fun songs. But I don’t think I could see myself ever sitting down & going to listen to it
Second CHIC album in 3 days... not ideal, but not bad. This one is definitely the better of the two, but it still suffers from being pretty repetitive and each song being at least a minute too long. But, it's got a bit more energy, I enjoyed the instrumental Savoire Faire a lot, and that elevates it to a 3/5.
T3B 1. Le Freak 2. Savior Faire 3.I Want Your Love
Decent album. A bit to full of themselves singing their name a lot.
The first half of this album was a fun, dance-fest with rhymic beats and repetitive lyrics. It reminded me of bands like Daft Punk, who were almost certainly inspired by music like what Chic has created here. I don't see this as an album I'll really return too, but I thought there were some fantastic cuts such as the pop hit "Le Freak" and album closer "(Funny) Bone"
Jag gillar funk ok jag erkänner det LBA
72/100: I was hungover when I started this album, but by the time I was done listening I felt fully well-rested and completely energized. Maybe that’s because this album was so fun that I listened to it on repeat for over two hours or maybe it’s because this album is a good time manifested in a song. Some songs are impossible not to dance to, every song on this album is like that—they just force you against your will to smile and dance. It occurs to me now that this is what music should be, this is the true power of music. Inexplicably, this album can make a bad day good, I think that’s beautiful. This was a really fun listen to and I’m really glad the album generator helped me discover some of the songs on this album.
Yeah, I would not say that I fully liked it. Especially how the album started, and how it went on for 2 other songs.
Fun album, it gets a bit repetitive with the lyrics. I've heard a couple of songs before, but had no idea they were from this album (Le Freak and I Want Your Love) Enjoyed it overall
It starts with very cool songs; in the middle of the album, we have some ambiance songs that are killjoy, but it finishes with a set of 2/3 songs that grab my attention again. Irregular, but it's lovely to receive this album on a Friday morning
CHIC – C’est Chic I know nothing about this, lol. It’s 70s Disco/R& B, which is not my music. - Chic Cheer – Nice funky bass and syncopated guitar. Minimalist vocals (just repetitions of “Chic, Chic!” and a few other phrases). It’s got tons of groove. It’s not trying to be meaningful, just a confident and groovy dance song. A bit too repetitive for my taste, though. I’d have been happy with a, lik, 3:30-4:00 version instead. - Le Freak – Oh, this is the “freak out!” song. I had no idea what the name or artist was before now. Like the previous, it’s just a dance tune, designed for happy, stylish vibes, not deep meaning. Apparently, it originally was an anger song after they were denied entry into a club where their own music was being played. The “freak out” was originally “fuck off”. That’s hilarious. Again, longer and more repetitive than I’d like, this one actually being a full 5:30. The full repetition of the 2nd verse and chorus after the extended bass solo is a bit much. I’d have preferred going straight from V2 to the bass solo, then the last chorus (cutting out 1 chorus and 1 verse repetition. - Savoir Faire – A 5:04 instrumental. Bass, mellow guitar and background keys get the focus. I like the cross-stick drums for the mellow mood. Great tone on the guitar solos. A strong R&B instrumental. Despite being one of the longer tracks, this is probably the one I felt was the least dragged out. - Happy Man – A pure feel-good song about being happy and spreading love. Again, repetitive and too long, but a nice vibe. A 3 minute version would have been my preference. - I Want Your Love – On its face, a pretty basic disco love song. Apparently, Nile Rodgers was trying to imitate the grooves of German producer Giorgio Moroder – who used a sequencer for all his parts. Rodgers did not use a sequencer lol. A great “Achievements in Ignorance” story. Yet again, too repetitive and drawn out for my tastes. The remastered version I’m listening too is also way longer than the original version apparently (6:53 vs. 4:57). The extended solo/instrumental section is actually quite nice. I like the trumpets. That said, it could all still be about 2 minutes shorter. - At Last I am Free – The longest song at over 7 minutes. Also the slowest so far. The verses are about broken love and the pain felt inside. The most repeated line is “At last I am free, I can hardly see in front of me.” I don’t get it. I also don’t like it. - Sometimes You Win – Reminds of Roll the Bones, except less nihilistic. Similar theme of life being down to chance, so taking a chance on good things. Other than that, pretty basic disco. The trumpets are kinda nice at the end, it’s a ten second burst surrounded by otherwise repetitiveness. - (Funny) Bone – A (mostly) instrumental track with the only words being: “Just one more thing. Remember the whole world's a circus. Don't you be the clown” Clearly a closing track to an album instead of a song in its own right. Which doesn’t quite work because this album isn’t cohesive enough to justify that. So, as my first real deep dive into Disco, it’s better than I expected. That said, I dislike some things that seem to be part of the stylistic core: lots of repetition, very stretched out songs, and simplistic lyrics. The instrumental sections tend to be my favorite, and so Savoir Faire and I Want Your Love get my vote as the best on this. With most of these songs, I’d have liked a minute or more of the repetition cut out. Still, I get why some of their songs were megahits; they’ve got groove. Ovearll, as an album I’d give it a middling rank. It’s competent and groovy, but not my taste.
Decent dance and disco album with some all timers to start it off. It gets incredibly repetitive and the lyrics are super simple, but it definitely got me moving. Highlights: Chic Cheer, Le Freak, I Want Your Love.
Was disco a mistake? Probably, but at least it has its fun moments. Some songs just did nothing for me but Le Freak is a classic for a reason.
Može li se imat sedam ili osam le freakova na albumu, naravno da ne ali isto je fora
rätt jäkla svängigt
A couple of great tracks but generally a little disappointing
Best Song: Happy Man. That walking bassline and the in-your-face, golden-retriever naivete of a chorus that's just "I'm a happy man" make this track a standout. Worst Song: Chic Cheer. Pretty rough start to the album. Not a fan of "cheer" as a musical form, and the use of a ref's whistle as an instrument just feels a bit lazy. Also, by the end of the song, it sounded to me like they were saying "Sheep, Sheep". Overall: The groove is undeniable, but is it altogether that interesting? Not really. Toss it on in the background and you'll waggle your shoulders some, but won't bust out and dance.
A few really good tracks, but a lot of pretty dull but inoffensive stuff in between.
More of an album to dance to than something I'd put on at home. Enjoyable listen, but a few tracks become repetitive and long.
Currently seeking out a disco club to get down to this. Le freak just goes wild. Highkey i think I want your love might be the best song on here. This shit just makes you want to move. Grooooooooovy 6/10
Fun album nice and groovy
Highs are super high. But some bad songs.
This album was fine, but didn't really grab me. I like disco, and definitely don't think it gets its due as a genre. However, much like the other Chic album that I reviewed, I just couldn't really get into this one 3/5
Fun stuff.
Disco and R&B are not for me. Probably the best album from those genres so far, but it's just so samey and inoffensive that I can't give it anything higher than a 3/5.
Bro i'm sad, and all this upbeat madness wasn't really getting to me. But nutty on the trumpet tho.
average album not a big fan of late 70s/80s soul, way too commercial and no innovation. bang average other than a couple classics good songs, bad album mum loves it tho 6.5/10. average
Me gusta I Want Your Love.
first half is good second half is boring
Yeah, it has that hit that you always hear in your grandmother's basement during Christmas parties. You're probably sick of it, I know I am. But the album as a whole is much more than that. It has really nice grooves and the instrumentals are really impressive. This is pure disco but with some funk and soul undertones. Next time ask your grandma to put another song from that album instead of Le Freak.
A pillar in terms of disco. Very groovy, very enjoyable. Que voulez-vous, c'est chic!
There's way better song than the one we always hear. Guitar in Savoir Faire is fire. Biggest ear worm ever = c'Est chic...
It's a very good disco album, with strong instrumental moments, nice arrangements and a monumental hit. It's not an album that I would keep with me forever, but I had fun and great time while listening to it.
I knew more than I thought! It was a nice enough album but didn’t go into my all te too 5 albums from this list.
3.75
Its good, but dated
Buen disco de música disco típico de los años 80. Buen estilo y alguna canción bastante conocida. Para rememorar aquella época.
a couple of good songs on this one, not for me though
Other than the one big hit, the same formula is followed throughout with minimal change.
Interesting combination out of some smooth R&B, some disco/funk and also some instrumentals with electric guitar. In the end of the day though not enough to warrant 4 stars
freak out
those years...
Echt een klassieker
Some great guitar riffs throughout. Savoir Faire was a particularly great instrumental.
Obviously a couple of bangers on this but the rest was only so so. 3.5
The big song off this album (Le Freak) typically annoys me so I was a little worried, but it wasn’t too bad. Sometimes it felt more like elevator music.
Some good disco songs
Buenos, está Le Freak y con eso basta, pero se me ha hecho pesado y repetitivo. Aunque está claro que son una referencia en ese tipo de sonido que es marca de la casa.
awesome disco album with one of the classic songs Le Freak. This album was equally relaxing and exciting.
Freak Out! Love it. Nile Rodgers is the slickest dude around. The hits are outstanding and the other tracks are pleasant muzak. The former Disco legends and the latter more laid back and jazzy-soul.
I like Chic, and Le Freak is a stone-cold classic single. And I love I Want Your Love. But some of this album felt a bit same-y, and songs like At Last were too cheesy for my taste. A great singles band, imo. 3 stars for the classics that are on here.
You know this is Chic, right from the opening bass lines. It's such a defining and unique sound. They've almost crated their own genre. The singles and upbeat tracks work best. Impossible not to toe tap along with. Not a great, great album, but certainly a decent listen.
A great slice of the perfect example of a music genre that crashed and burned so fast. Chic's sound exemplified the sound of Disco, and that's with thanks to Bernard Edwards bass and Nile Rodgers guitar. Take those two sounds away and the iconic sound of disco is gone. The album is very dated. Some of the songs like LeFreak and I want your love are still relevant, but the rest of the album while sounding innovative, lags. 3.5/5
Gotta give it up for Disco. It gave hip hop tons of great samples and made New York teens so pissed off they had to invent punk. This is a smooth listen but not too much too it
Definitely something undeniable about this album, though I cannot quite say what. Also something definitely arrogant about naming your band Chic, your album C'est Chic, your first song "Chic Cheer", and then using the word "Chic" at least once per song for the entire album. This list has turned my wife into a real big disco fan. I appreciate it more, but it's still just okay.
3 stars. Its refreshing to listen to an album that has no ulterior motives or metatextual bullshit. Good, not great
Un essentiel à écouter à cause de Le Freak. Pas fan de disco, mais les pièces rythmées sont efficaces. Nile Rodgers compose des musiques efficaces.
Overall pretty good! Does make you wanna dance!
Good for background music, I was familiar with Le Freak. I guess this sort of disco is too repetitive for me. 🤷♀️
I think I liked it, but mostly I feel like I don't know how to listen to or appreciate disco.
Wish it wasn’t so repetitive, but you know if this album’s playing I’m taking Anita out on the dance floor to BOOOOGGGGIIIIIIEEEE!!!!
Not a fan of disco, it's too repetitive. However, I like the funk baselines, and drum beats. And I found myself bobbing my head.
Yeah, man, all of this worked for me. Was disco that bad? Doesn't really seem like it. Love the production on this and most of this really works for me. I'd listen again.
It's got Le Freak on it which is a disco classic; trademark Bernie bass and top production. But the lyrics are dire and the other songs aren't great. The Beegees did it better.
Strong 3, groovy
Has a good groove and a couple of good songs, but it’s not really my music 5/10
Not super into disco but this was fun and had some jams on it.
very fun listen
I love the bass lines and scratchy guitar. Nile Rogers and especially Bernard Edwards were so influential. Like the last Chic album sent our way, there are two big hits and a bunch of supporting songs. The supporting songs here are more downtempo, but still pretty decent. Despite the guitar/bass one-two punch, the opener is a bit annoying and the closer is borderline, so I'm giving the LP a lower mark.
Fun and funky sounds of the late 70s. I only really like Le Freak, but the rest have good vibes as well.
Eh 3
Funky disco grooves, but each song was about twice as long as it needed to be. Great for a dance floor, annoying to listen to.
