Reviews (page 11 of 13)
First song is literally them just yelling “Chic! Chic” over and over, then the next song is the unavoidable “Le Freak.” It’s a testament to how much I like disco sensibilities, funky basslines etc that I like this album a lot, since on paper I shouldn’t have patience for it.
Nothing stood out and I was a little bored. Also, my dog left the room during the second song so... He was also not a fan.
Very relaxed, good 70s music... Great light disco vibes
This was alright - obviously they have pretty much the only song they're known for but nothing crazy. 6/10.
It's fair to say disco gets a bad rap: in the blossoming punk scene of the late 70's, was it not authentic enough? Too slick, too commercial? Genuinely vapid, or just denounced by rockers or racists? Either way, most people seem to have got over it by now and its influence looms large in popular music today. As for Chic, they remain in the shadow of their guitarist and producer, the titanic Nile Rodgers. A man who has worked with all manner of artists from Bowie to Madonna to Daft Punk, but his career really started here, with Chic in the late 1970s. Rodgers' guitar is exemplary, carrying the instrumental "Saviour Faire" on its own with a beautiful tone, brittle and bright and warm and full in equal measure. It's a wonderful solo displaying exceptional skill. His rhythm guitar is equally robust, becoming as catchy as the vocal melodies in "Chic Cheer" and "Le Freak". The strong musicianship extends to the rest of the band, and it's a stacked line-up including multiple vocalists and full horn and string sections. It works together very well, but special mentions should go to the basslines and drum parts: perfectly arranged, knowing exactly where to go to fit around the rhythm guitar. Simplicity is key, as is repetition. "C'est Chic"'s downfall is that sometimes, this repetition is pushed too far: seven repetitions are enough in "At Last I Am Free", but it's pushed further and further until the song unravels a bit and there doesn't seem to be any hook, any power. It just dissolves. The last couple of tracks are a bit duff as well, though "Happy Man" is a great hit I hadn't heard before and "I Want Your Love" is nicely embellished with strings and tubular bells. Overall, "C'est Chic" is a worthy addition to the list and a perfect representative for disco, if not an all-round mirrorball of success.
Not too bad. 3.5 stars.
I feel like I should be wearing a one piece flared jumpsuit in a primary colour. Martinis al round! This was a cool slinky album, but also quite irritating at times.
Le Freak is still very much enjoyable, everything else seems to get lost in itself. Nile Rodgers is still a legend though.
Ægte disco, flere kendte numre, groovy
i feel sorry for the late 70s having both disco and punk at the same time
It's fine for what it is and when it came from. Half of the songs are still very listenable. 3/5
Groovy baby! Le freak is a kicker, Nile Rodgers elevates this.
A bit unfair: this is meant for dancing, not listening. Good vibe, extraordinary levels of vamping.
Groovy
Much more enjoyable than Risque... at least there are other tracks that are worth listening to besides le freak, though nothing quite rises to that level.
It's disco! Light, easy fun in a tight 40-minute package.
Le Freak is a disco classic but it's also easily the best song on the album. The other songs aren't bad but they don't hold a candle.
I've got an entire room just for trying on clothes!
Uiteraard bekend en heel gezellig allemaal. Maar dan wel voor een keertje.
Zoet, zalig, zondags.
Disco caps at a 3 for me. This was a slightly above average album. Loved the guitar work.
Guitar work saved this album for me
Wow, this one might take the cake for the most dated album on this list. It's almost hard to believe nowadays that Disco was ever really a thing. Nowadays this sounds more like 80s porn music than anything else. Still, this wasn't bad at all as background music. There were also a couple of very decent tunes on here such as the funky Le Freak and the groovy I Want Your Love.
It would feel weird to review this album without mentioning Le Freak and I Want Your Love, which are obviously solid, and the first being a classic boogie song. It takes a lot for a song without lyrics to give me the feels and sadly Savoir Faire did not do such a thing. Overall, it was OKish, not my kind of music if I'm honest, didn't give me the feels and was a bit samey. On the album cover, I enjoy the logic of putting each song title on the front, nice and organised and as an organised woman I can appreciate that. However, it's not pleasing aesthetically to me, especially the font, it makes me upset. In fact, there's 3 different fonts on this album and that stresses me out. The photo is kind of cool I guess, I don't see why the woman's on the floor rather than sat on the sofa but I'll get over it. Also, the red, blue and white colours are not a vibe. Ok, I'm done now. 3/10 on the album cover.
Track no 1 played too long will send you to a mental hospital, track 2 is a classic and definitely makes you want to move your hips. The whole album is good to have on in the background, makes you want to tap your foot and sing some parts, would listen again even possible be worthwhile for a salsa sessions who knows what the future holds! Would listen again.
Disco gold!
Disco is always a little bit of a nostalgic niche, but this was OK.
Pretty good at what it is. Not something I’d really go for though. I was surprised it was 1978. I’d have thought it was earlier.
Well, this is about what I expected: a lot of funky cheese, and that's pretty much what I got. You can really feel the 70s vibes all the way through this one. Fave track: Savoir Faire, the one WITHOUT the vocals.
Ah disco. Hard to take serious, hard to not secretly enjoy. There were a bunch of songs that felt like they have been sampled or redone but Chic Cheer was the only one I could put my finger on (Faith Evans' Love Like This). Decent sign of respect. Le Freak is a classic and part of the fun of the album. Still, there's some real instrumentation mixed in. Savoir faire showed some music ability and Happy Man felt more funk than disco and was solid. But from there it felt like more predictable, run of the mill disco. Respectable but no staying power.
Good stuff. Love the clean funky guitar and the fat funky bass. It's definitely "of its time" but songs like Le Freak and I Want Your Love are certifiable classics. I wouldn't go out of my way to listen, but I definitely enjoyed it.
Decent enough, I guess, but disco sucks.
it was fine. definitely party music. cool to hear nile rogers rip it up
I liked this more than I thought I would. I was only familiar with Le Freak going in, but there is so much more to offer on this album. The bounce of the 70s funk and disco drives this record. I even enjoyed the ballads that are sprinkled in. "I Want Your Love" is a really fun song that will go into my rotation.
It's... okay? I know there is a disco revival currently going on, and disco had a huge stigma for a long time, but I find it hard to really feel one way or another about it. For me, disco is to funk and soul what yacht rock is to prog rock. There are some cool bass lines here, but the songs just kind of drag on without much in the way of a climax. I've heard a lot worse (including on this list), but I'm not running out to buy a pair of roller skates anytime soon.
// Favs: – Score: Decent 3
Lordy. These guys n gals run their choruses over and over and over and over and over and over and over. Good boogie grooves but Jesus..
Eh, disco like this is pretty one note to my ear, so a whole album of it all blends together even if it's pretty good overall.
Definitely makes you want to dance
Fun but some q boring tracks and j victim of own success by now
Was expecting more from this. I used to have a Chic best of cd that I quite enjoyed. Was looking forward to exploring some deep cuts. But this is basically Le Freak (plus At Last I Am Free) and some filler. 5/10
Impressed by this album. Didn’t expect much of it going in but hearing chic cheer the song had a good beat and was grooving. Le freak has either been sampled or used in movies it sounded very familiar. The rest of the album was pretty decent and overall better than I expected. 6.5/10
just one more thing, the whole worlds a circus, don't you be the clown. another album with 3 beast tracks and then a load of filler. can never get above a 3 with that sort of half arsed approach.
Very cool. Better than I expected.
3/5 - neat but not novel
Volevo dare un quattro fino a metà disco perché ho apprezzato davvero molto "Savoir Faire" e "I Want Your Love".
Savoir Faire
3.5/5 Starts not interesting, gets better the further in the album
Very enjoyable. Just good vibes.
The songs are fun and well written. They all feel very similar though. Not normally a genre I listen to but it was enjoyable.
Disco is okay… (I want your love is really good) but the rest drags a little
I'm not a fan of disco but i enjoyed this album quite a bit.
Decent, can really see how it had major influence but disco isn’t my jam.
Pretty groovy! Very classic disco sound, with a few definite earworms in there. I Want Your Love was probably my favorite track. I would give it 3.5, but I don't see myself listening to this for enjoyment (unless I'm at a roller rink).
It is what it is.
Groovy
Big old funky disco vibes. Nile Rodgers is a legend and this album proves why. Knew a couple of songs going into this album but the second half of the album had some wonderful new treats. However, it’s not an album I’d see myself sitting down and listening all the way through, the stand outs make the album but it isn’t necessarily consistent.
a lot of... uh... a lot
Some great tracks, wasn't feeling the album as a whole. But it's hard to rate an album after one day.. Rating would probably increase with time
As disco as it gets. Lovely smooth production on all the tracks here, deep basslines throughout, super catchy melodies. It does exactly what you expect Chic to do. It's a nice comfortable listen.
they sang the "freakout!!" song
Cool disco vibes but I much preferred the Sister Sledge album.
I don't really get the Chic hype tbh. Similar to The Beatles in some ways. I get the musicianship, songwriting, popularity, etc and it's nice enough but just not my vibe. 7/10
I’ll be honest, I only listened to half of this and defo won’t have time to catch up due to all the sport. However I liked it, and have saved it.
first track has the baseline from Faith Evans' "Love Like This Before"
Kinda fun and groovy but awfully repetitive. 6
I hope no one charged them too much for designing that cover. Not great Lyricists and I like a good lyric. Tunes are catchy enough, but only the 2 hits stand out. Not a great album but its good and they are a great live band. 3/5
Love disco. Dont love this entire album
I'm not really into this genre, but this album was perfectly OK, not annoying, good listening.
R&B, easy-listening, it makes me feel like I'm in an elevator in Paris...
Songs: Sometimes You Win, (Funny) Bone, I Want Your Love
Good funk grooves. Some songs are a bit repetitious but good record overall. 3 stars.
Pretty fun. Not exactly something I'd listen to often, but I'd listen again.
Some of this I liked, the funkier moments. Ultimately too disco for me, and some songs were too long and repetitive.
chic
wew lad
More super familiar music I never bothered to know the facts about before, so it nothing else this project is broadening my knowledge. Disco is not particularly in my wheelhouse though I am certainly of similar vintage.
We all know "Le Freak". Overall not bad but nothing I'm freaking out over, ho ho ho ho ho.
Fun.
For me this is Disco music. I loved it when I was young. Now I still like it after all this years. It survived time. A nice album in total.
Very disco, pretty good
Fav Song: Chic Cheer
Not for me
I felt the boogie and got down on it.
Chic did Freak Out (Le Freak) - cool
hmmmm c'est chic!
Meh
finally i am free
Easy and funky album. Some great tune, but sometimes the songs dragged on for too long
Brightened up the workday! Not sure if I really enjoyed it from beginning to end, but some songs were nice.
Oldie Auntie Funkie I guess I had to listen to it, but once was enough. 4/10
They sure do love to say the name of their band
It’s mid. Honestly. It has the. Free now! Let’s eat. Sushi. That’s not the actual lyrics but that’s what I hear all the time. lol. idk i couldnt bring myself to listen to the whole thing. :( imma try again in like 10 years n maybe i dont hate it then.
Very pedestrian funk, admittedly paving the way for disco but not in a particularly exciting way. I was expecting a lot more from this, especially with how iconic Le Freak is, however that one ends up being the strongest track. Everything else kind of just blends together. Favourite track: Le Freak Least favourite track: At Last I Am Free
Bleh disco funk. Some of the bass lines are fun.
I might tap my toes but it won't get me to dance.
Songs had a good melody but were very repetitive and went on far too long. Not the kind of album I would choose to put on for myself, but I wouldn’t mind listening at a party or something
just not into it
Not a bad album, not really my taste though.
Had to start this twice because I tuned out so quickly and just didn’t listen. Underwhelming.
"Le Freak, So Chic!" Otherwise, like a wedding band that doesn't know to stay with its hit(s) and goes on way too long.
Besides “Le Freak”, nothing really stood out, and many of the songs dragged on way too long.
Album #100: C’est Chic - Chic Genre (W): Disco, R&B Singles: Le Freak, I Want Your Love I have not listened to this album before. Thoughts?: After listening to this album, I like Nile Rodgers’ guitar playing. I also like the sleek production. But that’s it? The songs all sound pretty similar to each other, if you’ve heard Le Freak, you’ve heard 90% of the album. A very dull album. Favorite songs: Le Freak, Happy Man, I Want Your Love
Le Freak is the obvious hit here, but top 1000 album of all time? These 4 minute songs seem endless because they don't really go anywhere.
Not really for me
Okay so C’est Chic was a bit of an odd album. I can see why it’s genre is dance and I did actually know one of the songs (Le Freak) but other than that I didn’t really know what I was getting into. A couple of the songs were just a bit weird including the last song which was just people laughing with music playing (fittingly titled (Funny) Bone. Overall it was okay, a bit odd at times. Top three: Le Freak, Savior Faire and Sometimes You Win
Starts off with a cool disco sound in which, if you listen hard, you can just about detect the early notes of house music. But the style becomes repetitive very quickly, especially the dull dives into R&B romance.
As usual, great bass lines from Bernie. I gotta say as much as I was vibing to it, I did find myself tuning out here and there. Repetitive maybe? Or it just kinda sounded too similar?
Good produce goofy ahh lyric probably never going to come back, didn’t really enjoy 😊
Uhhhh not my style.
Found this to be oddly languid for a disco album (or I guess what I expect out of a disco album). Didn’t do much for me sonically, but the album cover is fire.
Nostalgic but disco
Not for me
Yuck
I'm going to assume this sounds better if you have a head full of cocaine and you're dancing your ass off, but for me, sitting on the couch sipping a cup of coffee, it's pretty terrible. Incredibly repetitive instrumentals, trite lyrics... it sucks. I gave it two points for some of the funky bass lines, otherwise it would have been a one.
Meh …. Disco 👎
And now I’m realizing maybe I’m not a Disco fan either. It had a nice beat to walk to but I won’t be revisiting any time soon
"Cool hook repeated for 7 minutes in lieu of an actual song"-the album. It could've been so good, but it's just... repetitive. Some great parts just pummeled into the ground.
boring aaa I'm sorry I concur
idk i just found this so damn boring!
Groovy, just not my cup of tea. Best: Le Freak, I Want Your Love Worst: Savoir Faire, Happy Man, (Funny) Bone
no me impresionó tanto
Only really liked Le Freak and I Want Your Love. Others I found irritating - Chic Cheer, Savoir Faire, At Last I Am Free and Sometimes You Win. I consider myself a fan of disco, but maybe I'm not since I'm giving this such a low rating?!
I was actually slightly disappointed when I realized what this album actually was, and that it wasn’t fully French. Thought I’d maybe have an opportunity to use my sweet Canadian public school education. Chic cheer was incredibly boring to me. I know it’s not supposed to be anything big and special as an opener, but I wanted more. Le Freak, well, just because it’s highly popular dance music doesn’t mean it’s that good. Like, sure, it’s fun, but as I didn’t grow up dancing at the club to this, it’s not something that I love and/or hear often. Savoir Faire was pretty in its own right. I’m appreciating instrumental tracks more and more as I go through this list. I don’t really have any thoughts about Happy Man. I want your love was more enjoyable as I felt it had more substance than some of the other tracks. Meaning, it had verses. The chorus was still very basic. I did like the horns though. At last I am free: again, not hugely interesting but not offensive. Sometimes you win: alright, had some pep to it. The laughing sound effects in funny bone were so annoying to me. The instrumental was fine, but ugh the effects were so annoying. 2.5/5 ⭐️ 95/1089
Let’s get down! Funky disco time! Oh man… FREAK OUT, C’est Chic! Now that damn song is stuck in my head. Look, I’m sure this is good funk (disco?), but I just can’t do it. Some of it is nails on chalkboard for me. Sorry. But the again, does kinda make you wanna party.
Got dat discqo ball beat. I just ain't no huge disco fan.
what a 70's album... they really like the word chic disco orange carpet and corduroy couches
Perfect example of disco. Some silky smooth bass playing. At least one rock-solid hit. And, that's about it. I don't know man, I guess this just isn't quite for me. Once upon a time this was the basic popular option for a lot of people, and now it still feels like basic pop but dated by 50 years. I think it's an important listen, but I wouldn't go out of my way to listen twice. Fave tracks: - Le Freak - I Want Your Love - (Funny) Bone
Disco
The album cover is such a vibe. Decent disco, some songs were a bit annoying though.
Disco. Yay. There was a reason that it slipped out of favor. Enjoyed the memory road trip, but don't need to pass that way again.
Nice to see the hits, but ultra repetitive. Like more so than other albums I have criticised for the same thing.
CHICK
This album came out a month and three days before my mam was born which is crazy to think about. Incredibly groovy, of course. Fav song is ‘Le Freak’.
Of course I know the big single here. The rest just doesn't interest me.
Polished disco-funk built on tight rhythm guitars, elastic basslines, crisp drums, and smooth, confident vocals delivers sleek dancefloor grooves with professional precision. Listening feels like standing in a stylish nightclub where every light and movement is perfectly coordinated, yet the night never quite becomes unforgettable. The grooves are infectious and well-crafted, but the overall experience remains merely okay rather than truly exciting. Most well known song is probably "We are family".
If I was Mark Watney and my only available musical option while being stranded on another planet was late seventies disco records, I would walk straight out that airlock and never look back.
It was disco that was fine enough and made me want to dance a little. But after the third song it all felt the same and nothing seemed unique or special. Just background music playing at an Old Navy.
I lived through this era - I remember the High School divides between “Disco” versus Zepplin and Van Halen - I would say that battle resolved itself a LONG time ago and this album wasn’t on the winning side. It was definitely of it’s time but it hasn’t aged terribly well.
Out of the four disco albums I’ve had on this generator so far, that has absolutely been the most disappointing :(
Disco sucks
It was nice of CHIC to lay down the samples that would same day be used in better songs. I did like the vocal performance in At Last I Am Free
- is this the diary of a wimpy kid song album? - yes it is, hell yeah - le freak actually goes insane - these baselines are so good - "happy man, happy man" - Fuck that bell going with the melody on "I want your love" is so good - "Just remember the whole worlds a circus, don't be a clown" - Definitely more of a background album for me, but enjoyed it for sure
was okay
Nile Rodgers is a genius and whatnot but I wish he'd used his powers for good instead of disco. This is music for happy people who enjoy life, not for me.
le freak i want your love a few good tracks terrible sequencing slower tracks were kinda boring the guitar and bass guitars are good 2.5/5.0
I only know that one song, and I'm not a fan.
I'm not a fan of the genre. I'm not a fan of the album.
Best Song: Le Freak This is really not my thing. Nile Rogers is cool and the musicians are all strong but the music genre and that late 70s popular sound is really not my thing. I'm just happy that the prominence of punk also had a place in the late 70s. 2/5.
It's fairly inoffensive, I suppose. after the album finished, four songs by four different disco artists played and I could not tell a difference. So when it all sounds very much the same, how is this one the one to listen to before you die?
Disappointed. Very samey
My opinion is that there is one song on this album that people should hear before they die, but not this entire album. And I think "Good Times" (not on this album) would be more essential than "Le Freak."
Meh not enough lyrics.
Some classics but considering it's only 40 mins long it felt like an eternity
This just isn’t the type of music for me
this one sounds like fake fun.
Okay, so there are some interesting grooves on this album, but as a whole this album is kind of boring. I was kind of excited as it started - "Chic Cheer" is a fun opener and it was cool to hear the source of the sample of this Mary J. Blige song from my high school days. "Le Freak" is obviously a classic but it goes on for too long (although I suspect this is partly in order to help get more play in the discos back in the day). It just kind of gets boring after that. A lot of these songs are long but to no end, there are no dynamic changes or big musical mix-ups in them... they just sort of keep going and going. "At Last I Am Free" is one of the most boring songs I've heard in a long time, it just does NOTHING. I appreciate Nile Rodgers and certainly respect the career he's built and the influence he's had on so many songs and musicians, but this album just doesn't do it for me at the end of the day. Honestly, if all of these songs were no more than 4:30 in length, I probably would have rated it a little higher. I think the only tracks I would listen to again are "Chic Cheer", "Sometimes You Win", and "(Funny) Bone".
Meh. They do have the one some. But rest of the songwriting is meh.
I used to be chic. But then they changed what "chic" was. Now, what I'm with isn't chic, and what's "chic" seems weird and scary to me. Dated and overly long.
Favorite songs: Le Freak
It's fine. Not really into the music, but it wasn't unpleasant.
Meh disco. Some grooves and melodies are nice but they stick around too long.
Just boring basically. It's all choppy guitars, smooth production and meaningless lyrics. One for the mums I suppose, but does precisely nothing for me. Also, as ever, made me think of turning on any BBC channel at any time in the summer, and immediately seeing Nile Rodgers.
4/10 Chic just aren’t for me at all
Hasn't aged particularly well
It's fine. 2.5, rounding down to 2 because some of the songs just went on too long. Good instrumentalists, but nothing really stood out
Really can't see why this is in a "listen to before you die" list. One hit track followed by a meandering jam session. Groovy but not much else.
Love the hits — Le Freak and I Want Your Love, but found the rest a bit dull.
This album is not intended for me. I feel awkward dancing and, using context clues, they seem to really want you to dance. It does liven up a Thursday morning replying to emails though. Is that as good? I liked Savoir Faire. It's a skilled instrumental track. I'm also 95% certain this album set the record for most times chic has been said on an album, so that's something of note.
So here’s the problem with this album, it’s got a lot of fluff. The three tracks that stand out the most are the two massive hits “Le Freak” and “I want your love”, plus the third track is an insane instrumental track named “Savoir Faire”. But the thing that undermines the album as a whole is everything else just feels like filler and it’s super forgettable. I guess if the songs had been more complicated and there was more ideas and songs brought to the table I think this album could’ve been better.
A little heavy on the disco for my taste!
not my vibe
I don't like this album, it's not my style but it's interesting!!
I wish it had more lyrics!! the Songs are all quite similar
Sleek, Chic, but repetitive and shallow.
Niles Roger’s guitar playing and Bernard Edward’s bass playing were a treat to listen to, but very little else was enjoyable. I guess I need some cocaine the next time I listen to this
Mostly chic.
Standard NYE background music with bits of over exsessive noodling from Nile Rodgers.
It's a shame as I was really looking forward to listening to this. It's not bad, but didn't quite live up to my expectations. You can tell what singles came from it
Le Freak is a disco classic that reminds me of roller skating rinks. Most of the rest of the album gets pretty tedious pretty quickly.
truly not this album’s fault that it is received such a low rating by me. if you were to ask me what my least favorite music is i’d tell you “r&b, disco, and anything from the 80s.” thus sadly this album was destined to fail in my rankings. obviously it is critically acclaimed and well loved so i’m sure they’ll survive this criticism. like i said it isn’t that the album is bad; i just don’t like the genre at aaaaall. obviously nile rodgers is a genius and i love his work with daft punk. boosted this from a one to a two out of respect for his influence and the fact that the instruments are so brilliantly played. for that reason, savoir faire was also my favorite song off the album. goddamn 80s.
Apart from the massive hit single "Le Freak", (which is still a favourite with people from my generation), and possibly their lesser hit single "I Want Your Love", this is a fairly mediocre Disco R&B album from the late 1970s.
Hmm
Le freak and happy man were the only decent tracks.
I don’t like funk
Disco funk is odd to begin with, and while the album starts strong, it really drags at the end. Repetitive songs should not be 7 minutes long.
Ok but actually why is this album included on this project? It’s not awful, but it’s basically just disco. I guess maybe they needed an emblematic disco album? Also, At Last I Am Free was genuinely annoying.
I love that this exists and was able to provide influence all the way through to 2025. But, it's just not my favorite - style or sound. 2
Couple of decent tunes but mostly not for me
Stylish, just not my thing
In a 1978 review The Los Angeles Times referred to the bulk of this album as “Pedestrian Disco”. As Borat would say, “High Five”. If C’est Chic was a movie it would be called the Wizard of Chiq and the first half of the album would be it meandering around on a black-and-white dance floor looking for home and then voila, I Want Your Love would blast it into sweet sonic disco/funk techinicolor and send Dorothy home to Kansas in red stillettos. Finally, I don’t think it’s necessary to talk too much about the omnipresent wedding dance floor smash hit le freak. With the rising cost of inflation, no one is going to be able to afford to have weddings which means less emphasis on the hits. Instead they’ll be at home checking out the deep cuts like I Want Your Love. If I only had a freak. Stand Out Track - I Want Your Love
Cringe
Lots of disco vibes and some 80’s soft rock. Favourite tracks, Sometimes you win, Le Freak. Not going to add this to my normal playlist anytime soon. I understand how it is considered influential though as I heard several other bands and songs in a few of their tracks.
You know you're in for trouble when as a band you try to turn your name into something as they did with Chic Cheer. Much like someone who always uses the term Chic when talking about fashion this album overstays it's welcome.
Not my favorite
Hauskaa funk meininkiä jossa todella tuttuja biisejä muunmuassa Freak out, she shi, bi bi. vai mitä se sanookaan siinä
Ehh
Couple of great tunes but overall this was not great...
Once again, a single hit does not mean the whole album is worth listening to
Didn’t love this album. I checked how much was left several times.
Not my thing at all.
BROWN CHICKEN, BROWN COW. Savoir Faire was the best produced Porn music I've ever heard. All I saw was big fro-y bushes getting wrecked. Where's John Holmes? Which song does Debbie Do Dallas to? The plot to Deep Throat is her clit is in the back of her throat. A bit too glossy & poppy for my taste. I like my funk to be dirtier than this but still funky nonetheless. Le Freak is really all you need to hear. 2
I did not like listening to this album
Favourites: ★ Savoir Faire ★ Sometimes You Win
This is like elevator music. I can’t wait to reach my floor and get off.
Naja, ganz witzig aber nichts so wirkliches
Insane quality as far as music and vocals, but every song went on for about 1-2 minutes too long. I suppose that's disco, but not my favorite aspect.
There is not a lot to expect. Its a funk/disco album. There is nothing wrong with it but very repeating. But There a some Good RnB songs on it
I remember this album from my teenage years, great dance tunes on here, but a few fillers
A couple bangers but mostly one note.
Disco not really my thing.
Soul/disco. Meh.
Obviously famous (infamous?) for "Le Freak", which is...fine. Catchy, but a victim of overexposure. "I Want Your Love" is the best track on this album, however.
I have only heard le freak from this band before and now I kind of get why. The whole album is in the same kind of vibe as that song but not as catchy. When I realized that I listened to le freak again and it is kind of a weird song. Its still catchy but the other songs will soon be forgotten by me.
(40/100)
Fairly repetitive disco album, never been a fan of disco. I think these guys can be categorized as one hit wonders
Better than the Chic album I got two weeks ago (Risqué), but still not terribly great. A couple good songs, but otherwise underwhelming.
I liked the start, after some point it got a bit boring for me
Not for me.
Musically tight lyrically shit. Every song manages to make a 30 second idea into a 6 minute song somehow. Music made specifically for Walmart commercials. 2 is probably too harsh.
Funky beat obvs, but essentially one riff and completely inane lyrics throughout.
Cheesy naff disco. Not for me
Can't deny the groove, but quite a few songs that didn't really catch me
Oooh, macrame and shag carpet! I was surprised by how many of these songs I knew. Pretty cheesy overall, bonus star for nostalgia.
Super meh. There’s a few moments on this that elevate it, and there’s clearly some craft going on, but I couldn’t wait for it to end.
Not my style.
Nah. Disco is not my thing
Funkety funk. Ålreite de mest avspilte, resten her heeeeelt midt på juletreet.
looking forward to this but didn't enjoy
Well, 'C'est' was a quick breezy disco album. Then came the track, "At Last I Am Free," which I'm not sure is supposed to be taken literally by the listener. This 7:13 (good numbers!) long track is a dirge that could be cut at least in half. The rest of the album is just ok anyway, highlighted by a classic disco track. Top tracks: "Le Freak," "I Want Your Love"
I don't like disco. Great bass lines.
Fire
Le Freak is good, but disco isn't really my thing. The beats and grooves are good and it would certainly be danceable, but in general this album isn't one I will listen to again
Did not move me one way or another
meh
Not a great album. Disco is designed for a four and a half minute dance session. Since I am not dancing this was not as fun for several iterations.
Couple great songs but far too many instrumental or filler tracks on the album. Felt a little stale towards the end. Better options if you wanted to listen to this genre.
Didn't enjoy anywhere as near as much as I thought I would. The obvious classics are stand out but the other tracks didn't do much for me. Might be good background for a 1970s style party I guess.
Album was just ok
It wasn’t the worst thing I’ve heard, but not quite three stars. Maybe 2.65? I think the songs were extremely repetitive and not very interesting. The instrumentals were ok so that’s why it’s not rated lower and there were a couple songs that were pretty decent.
Music is good, it’s a little repetitive
Uf, očitno bo disco dan. Ta prv komad, "Chic Cheer", je res preizkušnja kok cajta loh poslušaš en in isti ritem brez, da se ti sfuka. Js sm fajlala kr hitr. Pač, kva nj rečem, it's a disco song, sam bl kul k taprv. Naslednji komad, "Savoir Faire" je pa dejansko kul, chill, instrumentalen predah, kjer ma kitara skoz glavno vlogo. In, disco ritem je nazaj z "Happy Man". Ampak spet, ponavljajoči se ritem in ponavljajoča se besedila - it doesn't do it for me. Iiiin, nazaj v disco. Yay, zadnji komad! Brez besedila! Uf...
2 stars
Ahhh freak out! Decent funky jams but ultimately meh
AUNTIE'S MUSIC. 2/5 cuz of the year and the throwback.
Cover 4 Le Freak is a fun enough song if it comes on the radio or something. It's not one I search for or ever have some desire to listen to. I won't necessarily skip it if it's in a playlist either. The rest of the album is ok but not very rememberable.
Disco sucks f*** everything
It is an ok album to groove to for a bit but I wouldn’t ever choose to listen to it.
Perfectly fine disco R&B that just isn't my thing. Not even a big fan of Le Freak. Savoir Faire is probably the best track on the album with its Clapton-esque guitar, but the vast majority of the album has an issue with the songs being way too long. Every song could have used one to four minute pruning. Especially songs like At Last I'm Free which is dreadfully plodding and didn't need to be seven minutes long. And if you thought DJ Kaled was bad with announcing his name, check the first two songs on this album, haha.
Kind of catchy but not for me I think
A bit bland and forgettable
Apparently this is a really influential album. For disco. Which begs the question, if the album is influential to a terrible genre, is it still influential? I've read a lot of reviews about dumb lyrics on albums here, but some of these songs sound like they belong at a cheerleading competition. Bonus point for the bass.
Music for dance. Can't fault the musicianship or singing etc. But not really my thing Songs very light and superficial.
Eh
Funk is not really my genre. I felt like this was an album I could’ve died without listening to.
A very light album aside from "le freak". Everything is very mellow and chill. Enjoyable.
I'd already heard a few of the songs and I mostly enjoyed those more than the others. Overall, it's not probably not an album I'd listen to again but I understand why people enjoy it.
Lots of classic hits but boring
Decent album. A couple of classics but nothing that gets me super into them.
This album succeeds in bringing back memories but not very happy ones. This stuff and the like was played constantly at the local Palais De Dance, AKA The Mecca or any other nightclub of your choice. There was only one reason or sometimes two reasons why I went there and the music wasn’t any of them. In fact nightclub music was a good excuse not to go at all. That and the warm watered down beer. So in principle I hate Chic music. Big however here though because Mr Rodger’s and his Chiccette’s have somehow become National Treasures. Locally they have become an annual institution appearing at the Halifax Piece Hall to which members of my family and friends go and come back with many tales of how great the gig was. So much so that they try to convince me to go. As I speak their next appearance happens to be next week. My rating of this album signifies whether I will be there or not. 2/5 24/8/25
2 good songs, rest too repetitive
Disco doo doo.
Nice bass. Talented band, but overall pretty weak songs and shallow boring lyrics.
Two albums by these guys in a week… this one wasn’t any better, I’m afraid. Fine for dancing probably, but not so much for listening.
Good but not really for me
Le Freak we used to cover for a reason; the rest of the album dances around that great tune.
It’s hard to separate listening to a disco album from envisioning what it’d be like to hear it inside a disco, and so while CHIC is maybe the quintessential disco group, there’s really only a couple songs that are just enjoyable as standalone songs. That’s not to say this is bad music - Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edward’s are master craftsmen and bring a smooth, level playing style to dance along to. It’s just that beyond the hits, there’s not a whole lot there to dig deeper into.
Nice smooth R&B. Easy to listen to but not exceptional.
Very disco, 80s, very repetitive lyrics but upbeat sound
It was fine. It didn't scratch the itch I had hoped it would when I learned ot was disco music.
2.5
It was pleasant enough but u don't think I'll repost. 2.5 stars maybe
Very groovy. Le Freak is of course a classic and great dance hall jam. The instrumentation on Savoir Faire was nice, good base and some fun noodling. Didn't really like many of the tracks with vocals and songs seemed quite formulaic. All in all, not bad, but not great.
Sometimes LPs from the pre-cd era sounds like 2 singles and padding because there's no such thing in the 70s or 80s as a major label band who puts out a single that doesn't appear on a full length. I was surprised that this is Chic's second lp, because the single to padding ratio suggested it was a cash grab for a band that would a few great singles and crap lps. I remember Le Freak at roller rink birthday parties when I was in primary school, and not a cocaine-fueled LA poolside party where everyone is wearing beige, so its hard to look at this 40+ years later and see it as essential.
A couple of catchy groovy disco dance tunes but suffers from being overly repetitive. It’s clear they influenced a whole movement but on its own musical merits not very inspiring.
Just a great "of the moment" record. Disco, funky, NYC, 70s, dirty, coked-out, Halston/Warhol, dance music. Who but Chic knew the depth of talent assembled to create this zeitgeist of an album. Nile Rodgers created a guitar vibe so catchy and funky that he charted Top Hits with versions of it for 40 something years, now. Le Freak is iconic, Savoir Faire is a nice elevator music jam, I Want Your Love is lovely and sexy. Good clean funky fun in the wild 70s. How quaint a time that was, huh?
Fun and liked more than I thought I would but don’t need to revisit. Can recognize that this has been sampled a lot.
Le Freak was a big enough tune in its day to capture the attention of a clueless 9 year old, so that's saying something. I also remember seeing this album cover and fantasizing about how rich they must be to live in such a nice house with such fancy clothes. Now, as a still clueless middle-aged man, I appreciate the potent musicianship behind this band and I also have a soft spot in my heart for bands that sing about themselves. But the songwriting is not very good on this album, unfortunately. One great tune, three fair-good ones and then junk. I think maybe these guys were more of a singles band?
I mostly just listened to the bass through the entire album. I'd give the bass a solid 5/5, then rest of it is a mere 2/5.
ok as far as it goes, but this kind of thing is really not for me
