Reviews (page 11 of 14)
It was fine.
Not as into Pumpkins as my peers at the time, but this is certainly their best.
I feel like you have to be in the right mood to really appreciate a record like this. There were definitely some great tracks on here but the rest dragged on a bit. I'm sure I would enjoy it after a couple listens
controversial. really couldn’t get into this as much as I’d like. still a few really good songs
Steady with no standouts
Var det slik at man kunne dj-e bort vokalen i Tidal?
Fuzz pedals and tabloid press. The crown jewel of alt rock. Gen X’s Smile: a groundbreaking gorgeous collection of songs from a mentally ill auteur.
Moody, expansive album. Interesting songs and arrangements. Good listening
They’re grunge-ish. And I like it. 3.5 stars in my book.
3.4
I bet I will like it the more I listen to it. For now, I just need to stop listening to the first 30 mins of it before quitting.
Grunge / early 90s vibes First 2 songs I like Grungyness wears thin after a few songs Disarm I recognise from the intro Rest of album a bit bland for me
I always think of that Simpsons moment, when Billy Corgan is introducing himself, “Billy Corgan, Smashing Pumpkins,” and Homer replying, “Homer Simpson, smiling politely.” It’s the perfect encapsulation of Corgan’s self-seriousness bumping into the absurdity of the world around him. Reading about this album just reinforces what’s already known: Corgan’s a notorious control freak. Stories from people who’ve worked with him paint the picture of a guy who’s both obsessive and petulant, and you can hear that tension all over Siamese Dream. It’s not my favorite Pumpkins record (that honor goes to Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness), but Siamese Dream feels like the blueprint for it. You can hear the band evolving, the layering, the production ambition, the emotional sprawl starting to take shape. It’s the sound of a band learning how big they could really get.
Some really good songs, some mediocre songs, and some real dumb frontman. 3-4
thats good, 3.5/5
An instructive process in teaching me I may not like alt rock very much.
Some of my music friends clown this record, but I think it’s pretty cool. It’s almost like a more accessible shoegaze. Corgan can sing, Chamberlain can play, too. After this record, SP starts to go off the rails, but this will remain as the document of their peak.
I tried, but just not digging it.
I didnt hear It but i guess It IS good
A solid album with that instantly recognizable sound and some great songs.
The sound is iconic, but then I remember Billy Corgan is a wanker.
This feels grungy and remeniscinent of the time. The vocals were kind of growly. I enjoyed the moodiness.
Some of my favorite Smashing Pumpkins songs. The album starts strong, fades, and then finishes strong.
It's ok
I think it started strong but at some point I got bored
I thought it was good in spells
Solid band
I was never a fan back in the 90s when they were all over the radio, and I would never have played this on my own if not for this site. But I gotta admit, this isn't bad at all.
Three complete classic songs (Cherub Rock, Today, Disarm), but the rest of it just doesn't grab me. I agree that it's an essential album, and is a much better representative than their contemporaries in the "rock, alt rock, whatever you want to call it" scene of the early 90s. On the strength of those 3 songs alone, 3/5.
I can understand why it's popular, but it wasn't for me. I guess I don't feel angry right now : ) Disarm and Today rules though.
This is the kind of music that would be on at a dive bar where it fits the vibe but I’d complain that I want to go to a different bar with better music. This wasn’t as bad as Mellon collie.
Good stuff.
Cherub Rock 4 Quiet 3.8 Today 4 Hummer 3.7 Rocket 3.2 Disarm 3.8 Soma 3.6 Geek U.S.A. 3.4 Mayonaise 3.5 Spaceboy 3.3 Silverfuck 2.8 Sweet Sweet 2.9 Luna 3 Score: 3.413869492
Again, one of those 90’s bands I never quite got into, outside of 1979, which is always fun to hear on the radio. Some decent stuff here, though.
The vocals are much less whiny than Mellon Collie. But the music is much less dramatic and powerful. I wish there could be some combo. 3.5/5
A lot of nostalgia for this band. I like the first half. That's where most of the songs I knew were. Really lost interest in the second half. Songs started to drag.
My favourite Pumpkins album 6/10 Only a recent convert to their music also
Some very songs, some boring grunge songs. The sound is very good, because of the perfect production.
I can’t fault the songwriting or musicianship and yet I still find this tedious.
A couple of pretty good songs, bit 7 gets a bit long in parts
I'm not the biggest grunge fan, but I thought this album was decent. Nothing really stood out though like from other Smahsing Pumpkins albums.
Pretty samey sounding. Very aughts. 'Disarm' was the standout tracks.
Good, vibey, would’ve rather listened to something else on my bday though
Arena Rock
Once again it's funny to hear the older roots of band who have had one huge radio hit later on. It's somewhat relaxing at least.
Enjoyed the instrumentation and performance, but Billy Corgan's voice is so annoying. This band was good, but could have been great if Billy Corgan had surrendered the vocals to a dedicated front person. Hard to ignore how much of a grade A asshole he is.
Some
Haven't listen this album since it's release. Then it didn't raise any of my attention basically and now listening it I just wonder why. Maybe I was too focused on STP...
I can now appreciate Today, it’s a good song and I’m glad my guitar hero trauma has been healed
not bad
Very 90's grunge sound. Something I enjoyed a lot when I was younger.
I’ve got it, but not really listened to much of it yet.
The great songs are great but I dont love the ones that aren't the hits as much. 3/5 Favorites: Cherub Rock, Today, Disarm, Luna
This one is infinitely times better than Melan Collie. That album is alll over the place, but they sound more focused here. Like, they figured out a clear lane. They experimented outside of it of course, but the path never changed.
I was kind of surprised at how many of the songs I recognized/ liked, but honestly it was a little much for one sitting
Always too much bloat in almost all of The Smashing Pumpkins catalog (I’d exempt Gish from that). Corgan’s voice is what it is - it works for me sometimes.
Was decent enough.
I find many of the songs too repetitive music wise, but I find it improves in the second half of the album. 3 stars or C.
Love the 3 big hits, especially Cherub Rock and Disarm. First time listening to the full album. The album tracks blended together for me but it all sounded very good. I figured Billy must have had a troubled upbringing based on his lyrics - Wikipedia says yup. It’s unfortunate he kinda went off the deep end. Is this the Pumpkins’ best album? It must be.
I vividly recall getting into the pumpkins as a teenager. It wasn't through their classic 90s material that played constantly on the radio. It was actually through their comeback record in 2007, Zeitgeist. The lead single Tarantula got a ton of airplay on much music at the time and I loved it. I even bought the album. I went to revisit it because of this review and it turns out the album is not on streaming. I think there's a rights issue and Billy doesn't own it. It's on youtube though... and it's still a fun song (no idea if the rest of the album holds up). Anyways, because of that album I dug into the rest of their material. My girlfriend at the time owned the greatest hits and burnt me a copy of it... and holy shit that greatest hits is incredible. Their run of singles from Cherub Rock to Tonight Tonight is insane. Because the greatest hits was so good, I tried to to get into their albums... but they never stuck with me. I listened to them all as a teenager but i just kept going back to the greatest hits. At the time I thought... "maybe they're just a singles band" and then moved on. Fast forward to today and I sort of feel the same way about this album... but it's not so black and white. The 3 singles on it are these massive omnipresent 90s alt rock classics. Disarm specifically is gorgeous. Even though I've heard it a hundred times, it still gets me. It's hard for the rest of the album to compete with these 3 songs. The first two-thirds of the album is especially mid in comparison. It's full of these fuzzy gish-era pumpkin songs that don't have memorable tunes. They all sorta blend together and underwhelm when wedged between the 3 big boys. The back third though was quite nice. There's a lot of variety there. I really enjoyed Mayonaise. Yes, it's pretty standard hazy pumpkins, but the tune is catchy as hell. Silverfuck is a big multiphase grunge rock epic. Sweet Sweet is a light, chorus-y vignette. Spaceboy and Luna are nice, vibe-y little ballads. I especially enjoyed the strings on the former. The ending of this album really saved it for me. At first I was quite annoyed that my 16 year old analysis held up. But then hit those last 5 tracks and really enjoyed it. Perhaps in time the rest of the album will grow on me. For now... it's a 3. But It has inspired me to revisit all the other Pumpkins albums and see if there's more than just the singles. Correction: all of them except for Melancholy and the infinite Sadness... that one is still a bloated, messy double album and no matter how many times I go back to it, i'm still bored even though Tonight Tonight is probably my favourite pumpkins song. God damn double albums. Anyways, ya, I enjoyed Siamese Dream. It's a good album.
Beaucoup de bruit pour ... je sais pas.
So many hits on this album, but I’ve just never been a big fan. His voice sounds whiny to me. I probably enjoyed the less popular songs more since they haven’t been overplayed.
Pretty good, no complaints
First few Songs Not my Kind, but beginning with disarm i was beginning to get the vibe
To me, this is a 90s version of The Cure. I just don’t like them that much. I thought about giving it a 2 but gave it a 3 on nostalgia alone.
This wasn’t bad but I didn’t find it especially memorable in any way.
Another Album standard of its decade, this time 90's Alt Rock. There are a couple of really good tracks such as Today and Disarm, and it wasn't' an unpleasant listen by any stretch but 90's rock isn't really my cup of tea. Happy to give this a 3.
Not sure why, but I was expecting more. 6/10
Not as good as Gish
I gave up listening to it after Disarm just like I did when I brought this back in 1993. The circle is complete.
Fun-enough 90’s rock. Not a song I didn’t mildly enjoy. 3.5
Fine, can see the appeal but not for me
While I feel that "Melon Collie" is too bloated and should be a single album, this one feels about right. Love the guitar/bass/drums interplay and it makes up for Corgan's voice and lyrics.
It is an 'OK' album.
A few Bangers, but not doing too much for me
I have been wanting to explore more SP, so I was happy to see this one come up. Unfortunately, I was left feeling a tad disappointed with it by the end. You can tell all the parts are there- crashing, loud guitars; vocals that range from screaming-in-your-face to lullaby-esque softness; various topics and concepts to keep things interesting. Even so, the overall product felt underwhelming for the most part. It was a solid album as a whole. It had songs that worked both by themselves and together with the rest. It started strong with Cherub Rock. I think the rest didn't live up to that high, however. It also felt long in a way that's difficult to nail down, as the runtime wasn't really the problem. It just got a little tedious or something. Maybe I would've liked it more if it were a song or two shorter? I feel like that was a lot of negative analysis, but that probably comes from having somewhat high expectations. I can say the album was a solid "good" even with the critiques above. I should probably come back to it again later and give it another try. Overall: 3/5
I rated this 4 stars a while ago but I cannot remember a single thing about this album so I'm changing it to a 3 star. Probably wasn't bad tho bc if it was I'd remember it for being so.
Solid, but probably not their best
Pretty solid. Good vibes, fun sounds. 3 stars.
I wish the singer didn't sound like that, I'd like the music fine if it wasn't for that guy. It's fine in some songs, like in "Today", "Soma" and "Geek U.S.A" and absolutely ruins some songs like "Disarm". Also "Silverfuck" feels like three songs smushed together? I really enjoyed the guitar work in this though!
I think on a second listen i would appreciate more (i think im this way with most music) but was p good, not exactly my genre
3.4
Destaques: - Quiet - Rocket - Disarm - Geek USA - Mayonnaise
Better than expected. An interesting combination of grunge and softer, more orchestral rock.
It was fun - I liked the lead vocalist and there was a lot of energy. Also felt super Millenial/Gen X. Very classic hard rock sound. It was fine, it just wasn't super stand-out IMO
Day 37 #musicsky #albumsky ok 3/5
The Pumpkins record with all the hits. Never was a big fan of this band, but the music is certainly unique and transformative during this era. The music is emotional, moving and even inspiring in some ways. The vocals can be a bit of a nuisance, but tolerable.
An alright album, I liked Luna the most.
This is an alright album, nothing really too exciting but t wasn't too bad having in the background. It has quite a lot of listens on Spotify but I would say that it's alright overall.
too dramatic, togli le seghe aggiungo volentieri una stella
Some good songs in there but not my favourite band.
Love the instrumentals but I'm finding it hard to enjoy it fully cause the singer is aaaaaaaaaa
Really liked it as a first listen. I really dig the guitar throughout the album and I also love the slow songs too. Luna is really a great autumn song tbh. I am surely going to relisten to the album.
I used to LOVE the Smashing Pumpkins so much when I was younger, but even then, this album as a whole never fully clicked for me. Don’t get me wrong, several songs have been in my rotation for 30 years (Mayonnaise omg! Disarm was literally life changing!), but this is not a top album for me.
not my flavour, few songs stood out though, i quite liked soma.
I have warm memories of the "Smashing Pumpkins"- sound. Unfortunately it is a bit repetitive and so the whole album becomes boring. Nonetheless "Disarm" is a banger and "Today" is o.k. too. Weak three stars for this album. 2,5
3/5 smashed my pumpkins
Almost okaish Indie Rock. Unfortunately drifting of in monotonous sludge of distorted guitars and Corgan's petulant whine.
Good rocker of an album, without being tiring.
I have never really liked the Smashing Pumpkins so I'm not going into this with high expectations. Cherub Rock is ok. Unfortunately, that's one of the songs I thought I liked going into this. I think it's Billy Corgan's voice that I hate so much. The music isn't awful, standard 90s alternative, but his voice is annoying. A lot of songs from this album got radio play. That definitely doesn't mean they are good, but this was a popular album. Disarm is the hit and I hate it. Another long album. If you ask AI to make a "90s alternative album", this is what it would spit out. Mayonaise is the best song on the album. No, the best song is Space Boy. The second half of this album is better, the album tracks are much better than the singles.
I can see the appeal of this genre of 90s rock, but it just falls a bit flat for me.
This was by far the best 90s rock I have listened to. But know this: the bar is very low. This was a solid 3.
3.5
Not really a grunge guy by trade but i enjoyed the music here. Very consistent vibe/tone wise but I think it works to the album's strengths.
Incredibly meandering offering that ranges from some of the best written tracks of the decade, to bloated, overly complicated middling songs that seem to never end. The guitar tones are superb and rich, though there's only so many 6 minute songs this can be used in before the trick is truly worn out. Best Tracks: - Cherub Rock - Hummer - Soma Worst Tracks: - Silverfuck - Geek USA Rating: 6.5/10
We will never know what came first, The Smashing Pumpkins or Nirvana, and I can't even tell which I like more. It was good, I liked the sound. Maybe a bit too long
Never listened to a Smashing Pumpkins album front to back or much of them besides the hits. This was a vibe. Great music to work to.
Luv grunge tunes nuff said
The soft, clear electric guitar sound is great, especially when it's playing riffs. The guitar hook in Today is instantly recognisable and glues itself to your temporal lobe (the part of the brain that deals with auditory stuff). The distorted guitars are more questionable, in no small part due to their omnipresence in 90s rock. It's the same reason why Radiohead's Pablo Honey gets its well-deserved hate (when compared to their later records), along with countless other rock bands from that era. The compositions are generally good though, with solid song structures that showcase the guitar riffs and vocal lines nicely. The bass and drums are fairly good throughout the album too. I dig the track layering that was clearly a sonic/production focus for the Smashing Pumpkins. All that being said, I'm not a fan of the singing. It's the classic combo of "strained and untrained" that's ever-present in alt-rock and its popular predecessors of punk and post-punk. Someone described it in their review as a "petulant whine", and I can't say I really disagree. One thing I've found from this project so far is that vocals are one of my (very few) dealbreakers when judging the quality of music. And unfortunately, it's more often the vocals that make/break an album than any other factor. The singing drops this from potential 5-star territory to a middling 3. Other reviewers cite the lyrics as working particularly well with Corgan's vocal quality – but as a listener who never pays heed to lyrics unless they're either masterfully poetic or egregiously bad, I didn't notice this synchrony. 3/5 Key tracks: Today, Disarm, Luna
I always think I should like The Smashing Pumpkins more than I do. I did mostly enjoy this album, but most of the songs sounded very similar to me and I definitely prefer Mellon Collie
3 stars
For years I would see Smashing Pumpkins scrawled in tip ex across the rucksacks of people who were a bit cooler and edgier than I was. Who or what were these pumpkins? It turns out that they have good songs and good sounds. I think I would have really liked them when I was younger. But do I like them now? Yes, when they are most aligned with what I want. Disarm for example. Soma? Yes. Geek USA? Somewhat. But there is a lot that feels a little juvenile. I can't quite put my finger on it. Perhaps its just the grungy angst.
First listen. Ok I guess.
One of those stars is for this joke: "Billy Corgan, Smashing Pumpkins." "Homer Simpson, smiling politely."
Fun!!
First time listening to this album. I'm not a big pumpkins guy but I did enjoy it.
Nice
I just don't like Billy Corgan's voice. I think I'd love this of someone else sang it.
It took 3 years, but I've finally bought in
Started listening and was a bit underwhelmed then something happened about half way through and I started to pay attention. I think I liked it but will give it another spin to verify.
Not the sound that I expected based on the group name, the only song I cared for is “Disarm”
Never a big Smashing Pumpkins guy, but better than I thought it would be.
Not as strong as other things they’ve done. But many.
Pretty good
Not bad, but not as good as I was hoping. It's all a bit samey. I'm not keen on the guitar tone. I like Billy Corgan's vocals. It's all fine, just never gonna be one of my favourites.
all i know of smashing pumpkins going into this was that song in Guitar Hero titled something I don't remember Oh, I didn't know Today was their song! I know this one! I'm liking it. It's very 90s.
I can tell it's quality but also just not really my thing. Disarm is a great song.
Another one that suffers from no half stars. It’s not my thing so much anymore. It’s good for sure but I doubt I’ll come back to it much.
Smashing Pumpkins is pretty meh in my book but this album was better than average for them.
Very cool very rough. much more my type of rock. Soma Cherub Rock
Really good and riffy grunge album, great songs
It's a 3.5 really. I like the less rocky songs with the whispery singing. It's been a cultural blind spot, probably have to revisit someday, but not really for me.
Not too crazy about any of the songs.
Really good album. Enjoyed listening to it.
could grow on me idk
These guys have kinda faded from my memory, and on revisiting them, that's just fine. They made quality pop for their time, but not much interesting is really going on. Billy's brand of earnest shrieking to whispering and back is very tiresome. Still, there's good music and production, and it's impressive how many big hits they had from this album.
Ok
Grunge. It's OK but no hooks or melodies to hold my attention. The overall guitar-heavy sound is good.
Don't really like Smashing Pumpkins but this album is fine.
It's a pretty decent alt rock/grunge album. Some of the riffs were nice and catchy and I loved the guitar tone. On the other hand, I really didn't like the vocals. I tried hard to get into them but even after a couple of relistens I just can't get past them. I'm not a fan of the acoustic guitar bits and their slower stuff in this isn't as good as the rest of the songs Overall it's solid, but I wouldn't choose these guys over the likes of Alice In Chains, for example Quiet and Soma are my standouts
Grunge, dark & dreamy
1. cherub - 1.5 2. quiet - 1.5 3. today - 2.5 4. hummer - 2 5. rocket - 1.5 6. dizarm - 2.5 7. zoma - 2.5 8. geek - 1.5 9. mayonaze - 2 10. zpace - 2 11. zilver - 2 12. zuueet - 1.5 13. luna - 1.5
It was alright
I should like the Smashing Pumpkins. They are from my era and right in the genre I love. They have well written, well produced songs. They evoke the feeling of a jaded cynic that is so integral to my generation, while at the same time projecting a certain pathos. But Billy Corgan is such an egotistical jerk that o have difficulty separating the art from the artist, so I never really got into them. Which is a loss for me. This album deserves a 4/5, maybe even a 5. But not from me.
Guitar heavy, a bit noisy. Wasn't sold on first listen, got better on the second, but I haven't yet got hooked. Maybe a third listen would be required. 3-4 territory, with potential to go higher.
Straightforward alternative rock music that still sounds contemporary despite its age
There is a lot of vibe and distinct style but I got a little bored by the middle and by the end of it
There were at least two songs on here that made me go "wait, this is Smashing Pumpkins??"
Found myself tuning out of this album from time to time but some gems would immediately catch my attention, like “Disarm” and “Silverfuck.” Decent 3.5/5
I really liked the opened Cherub Rock, but beyond that the album kind of merged together for me. I can tell how influential this album is - but it's not completely my thing. I did enjoy it more than I expected to though.
Several outstanding songs
This was a decent album. My opinion of smashin pumpkins is mostly unchanged; that is to say I like the guitars and general sound but I get tired of the vocals very quickly
Some good songs, others not so memorable
Better than the indulgent and stupefying "Melancholy," with some interesting shoegazey moments.
fairly good listen 3/5
It’s ok. Prefer Mellon Collie and don’t get why people think this is better
I don’t like his voice and some of the lyrics are corny but I didn’t hate this.
technically very good, just not my vibe.
I never got into smashing pumpkins and listening to the album I have just gotten confirmation for it. It's not bad but to me the songs all kinda sound the same.
I want to like this band more than I actually do. There’s just too much noise pollution and sameness of sound throughout most of their songs.
Not bad, some good moments but quite forgettable
enjoyed it, but majors on the bits of melon collie i enjoyed least, and minors on the bits i liked most
I really enjoyed the tracks that were more melodic, not so much with the grungier ones.
I want to write a more thorough review but I'm in a rush and want to listen to the next set of tunes!
I am not a huge fan of Billy Corgan's vocals
Starts off great with Cherub Rock followed by a few songs that try to capture the same energy and the goddawful Today. Then we get to Disarm which is another wonderful song then some more mediocrity. Overall the music is overall good, lyrics and vocals are meh
As per usual with Smashing Pumpkins it just doesn't fully hit the spot for me - there's some pretty good music in there and the energy overall is fantastic, but somehow his voice just takes me straight out of the zone.
Found this less annoying than I expected after years of finding Smashing Pumpkins annoying. Not my favourite, but no longer feel like I’d skip them.
1993 let's goooo Some big hits on here: Cherub Rock, Today, Disarm. But plenty more I don't know, I probably haven't heard this album all the way through since my brother was playing it in the 90s. Solid album though drags a bit at the end. Big boost for Today and Disarm which were pivotal tracks for me growing up. 3/5
I should really like Smashing Pumpkins. But they’re never a band I’d reach for. This is good, but the same stands.
Always been a gap between their high points - Tonight/1979 the latter of which is one of the great songs of all time IMHO - and their albums which I always thought could be a bit variable/stodgy. This is a good listen in retrospect but still not quite consistent enough.
Overwrought and really not to my taste. I could appreciate maybe ⅓ of it.
Today is a great song and holds memories of being 16 and that epic summer. The rest is ok, kinda standard grungeyness lots of strings and the raspyness of billy who plays the evil milky bar kid.
nice rock album that's a bit heavier than i remember but i stil lreally liked it
Bisschen viel verzerrte Gitarren
I remember when this was released and what a big Beal it was. Good music but I can’t do Billy Corrigans voice for more than 3 songs. Cherub Rock Today Soma but I feel like I know most of the songs and the sound.
Great instrumentals, not as keen on the singing though. Lots of good tracks mixed with a few not so good ones, but it was a decent listen overall. Highlights: Today Spaceboy
My fav tracks: Quiet, Disarm, Rocket. It was a very promising first half, but the second half is just mehhh.
I think I had seriously underrated this group. Very listenable music.
It spoke to that era of my life - the songs were pretty samey for me?
very Nirvana-y, a lotta noise but has Today on here, so some decent stand outs
Despite the killer guitar and drum work, this album is too long and my patience for Corgan’s nasally wailing is too short.
Inferior Smashing Pumpkins album.
It's a good break-through album for them. They definitely have their own sound: especially because of Billy's voice. But there were only 1-2 songs that didn't sound like they came from the same template of tempo and chord progression. This is a good album....3 tracks at a time.
Again a bit long and unfocused
Disc 2 felt like a bad acid trip
Not bad but it didn't really hold my attention
One recognizable song. Very consistent sound throughout. Nowhere as good as mellon.
seems like about some sort of relationship with media and music the second song seems like this person was having suicidal thoughts. i didn;t like it that much because it was really depressing, but i don't hate it either as it could be relatable to some people.
Damn that's a lotta music I don't like the vocalist's tone Very cool guitar sounds
Not bad at all, I really enjoyed it
Will listen again
Not for me, a few songs that I didn’t mind but overall the album was ‘meh’
A bit ambivalent about this one. Smashing Pumpkins is definitely a band you have heard about before, and it think this record should deserve a higher rating if this is your jam, but it just didn't resonate with me for some reason. There are some decent songs like 'Today', and perhaps a few others that probably deserve more credit, but it just wasn't for me in the end. Weak 3.
I really enjoyed the general vibe of the album. It is grungy, fuzzy and it still felt fresh today. My favourite track was probably "Cherub rock". During its runtime it did get quite samey and I had trouble differentiating the songs from each other. Mid 3.
Didn't leave much of an impression. I was a bit distracted. TSP are heavier than I expect. Not sure why?
This was fine, Quite generic but not bad.
I've heard the album before. There are a couple of great songs on the album. Otherwise, it's pretty good but not memorable / remarkable enough to be considered "great".
There were a couple of absolute five-star songs, but besides those, I’m not sure I’d return to this album. But, absolutely top-of-the-class early 90s alt rock.
Classic modern rock album with punchy drums and heavy electric guitar riffs. If you like the style you will like the album. I just found Silverfuck extremly horrible for a song.
If I liked Smashing pumpkins more, I think this would be great, but I tire of Billy's voice sometimes and so it's just a run of the mill 3 for me. There are some timeless songs on here though
They got better. IMO.
There's a good song on here, but mostly it's the low, growling drone that's the Pumpkin usual. Just listenable....
I like this album, but it makes me feel really nostalgic and sad, so it can only be a 3/5 Reviewed 27/08/2024
Enjoyable but what I liked most I already knew
Hyviä biisejä, mut hittielementit jäi uupumaan.
Lush and heavy (some of the guitar work is ‘heavier’ in its way than the guitar on the recent Iron Maiden album, again showing the shifting landscape of style and also likely pointing out some of Corgans influences). I came to The Pumpkins with the next album, so this one has no emotional resonance for me. It’s good musically but not really my thing. But it did lead me back to Fugazi and some other “if you like this, then you’ll like this” bands that Henry then walked in on and we had a 90s awakening for him, so once again every melancholy cloud has a silver Offspring/Fugazi/ Everclear lining.
Billy Corgan and Sharon Osbourne. This will never cease to amuse me. (Has nothing to do with this. Liked it then in a low-key way, still like it now.) Ice-cream vans and paint captured my imagination in an odd way. Very surreal for Top of the Pops, I must say.
No idea what he's singing about half the time, but it SOUNDS deep.
STANDOUTS: Today Disarm OVERALL: 3/5; I wanted to like this more than I did. But those standouts were good/very 90s sad teenager.
This album is much more interesting than i expected. Billy Corrigan's voice has always bothered me, but he isn't leaning as heavily into the super-focused whine on this one. There are hints of it throughout, but it's not persistent. As long as I listen to the instruments, I find plenty to keep me interested. 3.5/5 stars for the band, -1 star for his voice, so 2.5 stars that i'll round up to 3.
I’m lukewarm on this band and this album. I feel like it scratches an itch that I don’t have. They’re fine, but even the hits don’t really excite me.
Idk how I feel about this band and grunge in general. I didn’t want to listen to this a million times like I did with arcade fire. Vocals are suspect at times. High 3.
Some good songs on here ("Today", "Disarm", "Cherub Rock") but nothing good enough for more than a three, imo.
Love luna
Interesting for a couple of tracks, but it was too one-dimensional, and that sludge guitar permeated everything.
I like several of these songs, but the album as a whole is too long, and I just don't see revisiting it.
Really enjoyed this, and surprised it hit my radar earlier. Groovy and quite poppy, with cool big guitar sounds. Vocals are sometimes a bit whiny, but not so bad.
Decent
Enjoyable listen 3/5
the band was really good but the singing was mediocre. the band was also a lot louder than the singer most of the time so the singing faded to the back
Some good songs Disarm brilliant.
While I'm not the biggest fan of The Smashing Pumpkins by and large, their era and subgenre of music is among my favorite in history, so I can appreciate their contributions to punk and alt-rock. In general, I find Billy Corgan's voice to be on the more whiny and grating side. However, this album ended up being to my liking much more than anticipated. They definitely kept the 90s alt-rock sound throughout, but had some different elements thrown in that were very interesting to me. In particular the bell parts on "Disarm", and fun, punky rhythms on "Geek U.S.A." and "Silverfuck" were more true to the time period and caught my ear. Overall, The Smashing Pumpkins aren't leaping into my top 10 bands anytime soon, but this was still an overall enjoyable listen for me. Notable Tracks: Cherub Rock Today Disarm - like the use of the bells Geek U.S.A. - punkier than elsewhere on the record Silverfuck - cool rhythm parts 6/10
Didn't like hummer. Did like geeks and sweet sweet and Luna. Weird ending to space boy. Not sure how I feel about it
I’d rank this higher if they weren’t such cunts
I, of course, knew several songs off of this album from the heavy radio play. I also must admit that the song disarm is one of my big songs that I love to hear. I had never listened to a complete Smashing Pumpkins album until this. I have to say I really enjoyed the diversity of this album. There was rock, light metal, and some straight up pop . I’ve always appreciated Billy Corrigan‘s voice also. Overall, I really did appreciate and enjoy this album.
Nice
Still not a huge fan of The Smashing Pumpkins. I think it’s mostly Corgen’s voice, but overall it’s fine. Not something ima ever go back to but it was fine
This is alot more droney than before I like this and I like that it is shorter than Mellon collie but it has less hits it’s way more lowkey and it kinda feels dream rock and psychedelic for a bit. Luna is a great ending but realistically it just kinda blends together. Somber and lowkey but doesn’t pack that same punch as the original but better because it’s shorter. Glad they fixed the singing in the next record
Liked it at first but it wore on me.
this is probably a 4 star album but billy corgan is enough of a shit for it to be dragged down to a 3
Yeah this sounds like Smashing Pumpkins
The other week, I tried to listen to this album after a looonnnnngggggg time since I listened to it--maybe like twenty-eight years--and I was instantly reminded why it had been such an interval: It's hear they abandoned the crushed velvet psychedelic patchouli and cloves mope of Gish (and a bunch of fantastic singles and b-sides) and decided to be Styx instead. "Cherub Rock" is kind of annoying in a cloying way. "Disarm" is more mawk than moody. These being the hits, they kind of ate the album in my consciousness. However, there is plenty here that still reminds you this is a band and not the Billy Corgan show. Destructro Rock, super-ramalama, dream pop, and shimmery instrumentation still abound, and still make for a thrilling experience. I can't say this is back to front good, but if you dodge the obviousness, there is much to love.
Love SP, but they have better albums.
I've never known an album start so well for the first five tracks and then get a little worse each time until the end. The high energy at the start just drifts into slow meandering walllowy music, which I find boring. There's one exception around track 9/10, which is actually a decent song, but then it drags out a completely unnecessary middle section and kills the song. This and Mellon collie show that the pumpkins were a band who needed someone to tell them no sometimes
I'm neither a teen or angsty, so it doesn't appeal to me that much but I see why people enjoy it. 3*
Another one that bounced off me at the time, probably due to silly band name syndrome (I was reading Smashing in the UK sense of the word). I was expecting a scrappy grunge album but actually got a well produced post rock thing instead, even featuring (gasp!) string arrangements on some tracks. I mostly enjoyed it, but I think I probably would have loved it if it was shorter and scrappier.
Meh. I don’t understand what the big deal is about the Smashing Pumpkins. They’re not bad, I just don’t know why the big hub-bub.
tomorrow's much too long...
very coherent album, to the point of being a little same-y. they get some cool sounds, particularly that panicked guitar tone. it's really in my style but I end up wishing it had a little more bite. I like a lot of the writing too but its ultimately a little hard to stay invested throughout the album. its like 2.5 straight-down-the-middle star
I already knew a few songs from this album. It's a pretty good listen. I enjoyed it, even the songs I didn't already know. I want to go back and give it another listen.
The opening riff from Cherub Rock- chefs kiss
cherub rock mega wall of soind und no geil findi. quiet het e rieeeese solo hobbla, cool. today macht de relativ ruhige gsang mit hässiger gitarre move, cool. de fuzz bass isch super. und d strophe sind super cute. hummer sehr cooli chords mega tension. disarm isch sehr whiny gsi aber no guet als ballade. oke soma isch glaub die richtig ballade. sehr melancholisch ihm isch all by himself. aber s funktioniert findi. mayonnaise isch huuere schön im intro, mit de hert gitarre immerno cool. spaceboy isch au huere schön, wenn au nüt ultra soeziells oder so.
nimmtmi sehr wunder, han nonie öppis vo ihne würkli glost cherub rock mega ami iwie hahahah d snare isch ultraaa crisp today mega grunge I BI SOO MÜED disarm no cute I guess oke nei hans eig würkli na gern somaa bangeeer, weird und trz catchy MAYONNAISE MIT SENF cools intro aber s riff findi denn echli lacking hey ich glaub er liebt die person, binmer aber nöd sicher ja eig fun album aber au für mich nüt megamegaa spannends
Not my type of music bu i see the apeal
The songs were great but they were a little bit the same
Another album that’s better than its mediocre hits! At its best it’s grooving and beautiful — at its worst it’s Billy Corgan complaining on top of guitar noise.
It's not a bad album by any means, it just didn't hook me. I wouldn't feel the need to skip past any of the songs but I also wouldn't pick one of them to play on purpose. I personally found the quiet moments stronger, the end of Hummer stands out, and overall that's probably my favorite song from the album. I do agree with some of the other reviews that said they found the guitar to be strong and the vocals kind of held it back, I definitely appreciated the melodies more than any of the singing.
Some classics on this album, didn't think I liked them but their stuff was pretty interesting
So many notable singles on this list, but I don't really love them like I used too. I do still like Disarm a lot and it's probavly my favorite on the album. I also liked Soma into Geek U.S.A. The rest of the album, however, was pretty bland to me. And while Crogan's voice is certainly unique, I dont know if I really wanted an hour of it.
2nd Smashing Pumpkins since I started this gig. Song structure and guitar sound is good although the leads are weak and sloppy for the most part , the drummer is excellent. This would be a lot better if the singer didn’t blow.
Ok but pretty average stuff ngl
Heavy metal with different moods
Okay
A good album for sure, a great album? Not for me. It was acceptable and nothing more than that.
i liked the band, nostalgia helps them gain 3 points, 2 under normal conditions...
Slow rock, easy to listen to, a couple of popular songs on it
Bit of a strange case in the sense that while I enjoyed this overall, I don't think I like their songwriting. Not for a whole album at least. It just gets too samey yknow. 3 and a quarter stars.
Wouldn't revisit this for sure. It was a bit too long for that, and not really diverse. Wouldn't say I disliked it either, but it's just meh. Middle of the pack album, which is not bad, but I'm not here for these meh experiences.
I quite liked the shoutyness, but wasn't really taken by any of the songs, and on Friday I wasn't in that much of a shouty mood anyway. I think this wouldve got a higher rating if it was a different day
It was better then I thought but the are still not my favourite band.
Not a fan of rock or it's alternatives.Too noisy for my liking. Like a few. The least noisy ones. Ones that seem like they were recorded simply to balance out their noisiest bangers, almost as an afterthought.
really dig the first half...
Ok.
Favs: disarm, soma, spaceboy
Well, I wondered when Smashing Pumpkins would appear, although it's a bit disappointing to get them right after another 1990s phenom (Offspring), as they share some of the same general wall-of-sound 90s thing. (To be fair to Offspring, though, their lyrics are *much* easier to distinguish than Smashing Pumpkins. And to be fair to Smashing Pumpkins, they're so much less annoying/offensive than Offspring.) I own this album (apparently one of 6 million others), and at one point enjoyed listening to them more than I do now. Listening to this album again makes me think more of a time and place (1990s, DC) than it does of whether this is a "greatest" album or not. And I think even when I bought the CD I felt like they kind of had one song in them that they found several variations of to put together a full-length album. (I suspect if I ever took the time to decipher the lyrics, or ever watch their videos, I might be slightly disabused of this monochromatic image. And hits "Cherub Rock" and "Today" *are* somewhat different, I'll admit. "Rocket" not so much, and "Disarm" maybe the most distinctive, but I never really liked that hit.) Fine, but nothing special (despite the Wikipedia entry describing the album as "widely regarded as one of the greatest albums of the 1990s and of all time"), and a nice blast from the past. That said, I wish I knew then about what went into making this album (thanks, Wikipedia people), as it would have made the context of the album a lot more interesting. Talk about stressful and harrowing! And shades of the film "Whiplash" with the suicidal lead singer making the junkie drummer perform "Cherub Rock" until his hands bled....
Nice recording with good musicians but I just never got that into it
Not much of a Pumpkins fan but there are some decent songs on here.
I'm a '90s kid - I never owned a Smashing Pumpkins cd or listened to one of their albums straight through but I know most of these songs from alternative radio/my brothers' cd collections. Cherub Rock, Today, Rocket, Disarm, and Mayonaise were the singles. Disarm especially stands out as the song with the church bells and string arrangement- very grand! This is a consistent set of 90s alt rock jams
Billy's voice is very distinctive. I've had a hit/miss history with the band but I like the orchestral slant here. Quite extravagent in places and quite thrashy in others places which demonstrates variation. Still on the fence though.
Good head nodding rock
I have heard this band a bunch obviously, but have never listened to them outside of the stuff playing in the world, radio hits and what have you. They are certainly a very easy band to goof on which I enjoy doing. This was about what I was expecting, a bit dramatic, but cool guitar tones, and the songs are catchy for sure. Decent album.
It's fine, like a couple songs and have heard most of them but never in one go. Worked well with my run.
I didn't realize that I knew more than one song on this album. I like Cherub Rock, Today, and Disarm but never got into the band enough to buy or download a full album. I also don't know that I ever knew the names of these songs :) The album makes me feel nostalgic for a time in the '90s when I was too young to really know what kind of music I actually liked. I remember friends who were into rock liking them but I don't think I fully appreciated what they had to offer.
Hadn't listened to this in ages. They were always adjacent to the grunge scene, and they were on the Singles soundtrack -- so I knew them from there. Then came "Mellon Collie" and I wrote them off. Revisiting was...much as I remember. Several bangers (Cherub Rock, Disarm, Rocket, Mayonaise), but then a whole lot of fuzz. I mean, no one needs 8 1/2 minutes of "Silverfuck" unless you're feeling nostalgic for Metal Machine Music or something. Anyway, some good, some bad.
I loved this album as a teenager, and many of the songs still hold up, but there is also a good deal of filler on this. Not as cohesive of any album as I remember.
I certainly know OF the Smashing Pumpkins, though I couldn't name any songs off the top of my head. Digging into this, the sound is certainly familiar, and I'm pretty sure I've heard a few of these songs. But after an hour, it starts to blur together. Yeah it's grunge, and you can certainly hear similarities to Nirvana. It OK, and has a few points that are higher than the rest. but nothing that hangs with me 30 years down the line. Solid 3, but nowhere near making 4. 3/5
Very Varying
His voice grates on my ears after awhile. Appreciate the history and what it did at the time, but damn its like a railroad spike on a chalkboard
