Hadn't heard the entire thing before. Liked it.
Un conjunto de música que marco una época ,los 90
Ik merk dat ik vooral de stevige nummers waardeer. Nummers als Quiet hebben een lekker aanstekelijk ritme. Anders nummers laten me volledig inkakken. Ik middel het uit naar drie sterren.
Very pleasant first listen, great hard rock/grunge sound with dreamy textures/interludes, can see it growing to a 4 on second listen!!
Yeah this rips! Not a lot of absolute amazing songs but no real misses either. couple songs drag a bit. best tracks: cherub rock, soma, Luna
Deeper cuts sounded similar to each other, not just in a sonic way but I'd feel they may be too similar. Silverfuck is a solid jam track. Some of the 5+ minute tracks tend to drag. 6/10.
I was familiar with some of the songs. The album is entirely too long. Several of the songs carry on way too long. I don't care for the lead singer's voice. The songs themselves are ok but very unlikely that I revisit the album. I will roundup to a 3
Rating: 6/10 Best songs: Quiet
You can see greatness from here like you can see Versailles from the bins.
more smushing than smashing I would say
Fine, better than the other one. Teenage, whiney, some edge but generally not for me.
i used to play the Melon Collie…. Album a lot in the 90s. I didn’t have this particular album, but I remember loving some of the songs – Today, Soma, and Disarm has a haunting quality that still touches me after all these years. It’s suitably disarming. But the rest of it is a bit samey and I don’t feel it like I used to. Am I too old or ‘clean’ for grunge now? It definitely feels ‘of an era’ that I remember and am fond of but don’t feel the need to revisit.
I like this record! Best Smashing Pumpkins album for my money. So much more immediacy, urgency, and raw sound than anything on that Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness (there's only so much Billy Corgan I can take, and any double LP by the Smashing Pumpkins is simply too much Billy Corgan). Grunge is frequently paralleled with Shoegaze, but no other artist intertwined the two sub-genres so well as Smashing Pumpkins did here. At least not without sacrificing any pop sensibility. As a standalone record, this isn't really a great record, though. There are a lot of stinkers and I only really like about half the songs. But those that I like, I really like. Some are my favorite Shoegaze tracks of all time ("Mayonaise") and others are just great 1990s grunge-pop nostalgia vehicles ("Cherub Rock," "Today," "Disarm"). I return to this album more frequently than I care to admit. And it's really for more helpings of "Mayonaise.” But I'll stick around for the nostalgia vehicles, admire the album art, wonder about B. Corgan’s deal, and skim through the rest. (Side note: Odd that they would have the 2011 reissue album cover here...🤔.) Even the songs I don't care for—mostly the heavier, less pop-inclined cuts—are pretty amazing for their production alone. I find the overdubbing and layering used on this album, particularly of the guitar parts, to be really powerful. Like "Soma," which reportedly has over 40 different guitar parts all laid down on analogue tape. As for the lyrics and vocal work, well I mostly block that out when I listen to this album as, again, Corgan bugs me. I just find him a bit cloying when he’s being sweet and a bit screech-y when he’s being loud. And a bit pretentious overall. Somewhere between a Rivers Cuomo and Kurt Cobain of that era; but most like a Rivers Cuomo trying desparately to be a Kurt Cobain which is not particularly flatterring at all.
I think I've been grading these albums on a really generous curve, so I'm going to start being a bit more critical from here. This album sucks! Just kidding. I liked it. But mostly only for those thick juicy guitar tones. It was interesting comparing my listening experience with this one versus Jane's Addiction; I don't know why I just feel like I related with the youthful outpouring of Jane's Addiction more than the grungy head bob of Smashing Pumpkins. I just felt like there was more quirk in JA's music, even if they misstepped sometimes. SP feels a lot safer, but it's possible (likely) that they're one of those bands that inspired a lot of copycats, which would make their music sound less exciting to someone who heard the bands that they influenced before hearing them. I could have done without the orchestral treatment in "Disarm". I also kind of felt let down by "Soma", the intro had so much promise but I kind of tuned out by the end, even with the big glow-up halfway through. I did really enjoy "Mayonaise" and "Silverfuck"; in fact I enjoyed the last third of the album a lot more than the first two. The later songs felt more dynamic, more daring and energetic to me. My favorite moment of the whole album was the whole section in "Silverfuck" from that big trippy dominant chord that comes in at 4:19 through the unbelievable thrash of a jam at the end. Those screaming grunge guitars and bounding crashing drums feel incredibly well-earned after the long spacey breakdown. I also really liked "Luna", it felt like a concentrated version of all the things I like about SP. As a whole, Siamese Dream is a really nice album to have on in the background, but until that bit towards the end, I found it hard to sit down and actively listen to. After each attempt to do so my ears kind of just glazed over after and I thought "Yeah, this is nice. The guitars sound great." I think this album could have been an album of guitar-driven instrumentals and not much would have been lost. Again, some really nice tracks towards the end! But in general, not what I'd reach for.
Freaking tough transition going from listening to ABBA all day to this. Definitely not in the right frame of mind and wanting some pop schmaltz, but regardless I still think I'd find a lot of these songs kind of lacking and treading into some real unseasoned pumpkin GOULASH. A couple listens in and I'm appreciating the vocals and guitar work on several tracks. Disarm is powerful. What a monster of a song. Love those bells. They are a masterful touch.
Unpopular opinion, but I always thought that Billy Corgan's kind of a horrible lead singer. He's got that "yelling, but also trying to not wake your mom up" voice going on. Also he's an asshole but that's neither here nor there. The big songs like "Cherub Rock" and "Disarm" are great, but there's also a lot of bloat (but I guess that's part of the Pumpkins brand, ain't that right Mellon Collie). I like how shoegazey the production is. Works very well with the fact that Corgan should have his microphone taken away from him.
7/10
Good pumpkins hits, filler too. 3.5
Bedre enn det forrige SP-albumet, men fortsatt ikke helt min stil.
Some good songs but Billy Corgan’s voice gets annoying after awhile.
I like the music as a whole. The guitar is really cool and obviously very innovative. It's just.... Corgan's vocals are too whiny. It's why I never got into the Smashing Pumpkins in the first place. I will grant Corgan for the line in "Bullet With Butterfly Wings" : "Despite all my rage, I am still just a rat in cage." That is a great lyric. The kid listens to "Zero" all the time. So I dug it as long as I could get past the vocals, but that's kinda difficult. It's weird because whiny vocalists like Neil Young I get in to, but Corgan? Just... he sounds like one of those angsty emo teens who needs STFU and stop whining about EVERYTHING.
Some very iconic songs - I mostly love the intros and then there’s a lot of whining.
I'm not a fan of the SP. Corgans nasal vocals annoy me and the swooshy guitar sound isn't to my tastes. There are a couple of strong songs ...and some of the melodies are great but..I struggle. 3
Það er eitthvað svo þægilegt við þessa plötu. Hún er alveg ágæt og vekur upp skemmtilegar minningar.
Compared with Mellon Collie, I found even more to like in the songwriting, tones and textures of this album. And for some reason, I found Corgan's voice much less irritating here, so I could enjoy those things without being totally distracted. I think there's more of his softer singing here (than the really strident nasal belting on much of Mellon Collie), maybe it's different recording mixing techniques, maybe it's just my increasing familiarity; I haven't done a back to back comparison to check. But I might even come back for another listen to this one, so 3.5 stars.
I did not know this record at all. I did not find it as interesting as Melon Collie etc. I liked Cherub Rock, Disarm & Mayonaise. And I really enjoyed Silverfuck - definitely could have been a late 60’s drug-induced marathon. They were good, but I find this album to be a bit samey.
Ihan kuunneltava, mutta ei mitenkään erityisen kiinnostava tai mieleenpainuva.
I liked it but a good 30% was clearly fillers
Rock un tanto pesado y sin ser tan virtuoso. Algunas melodías reconocibles y una voz distinta
Singles: --------------------------------------- Cherub Rock (#7 US Alt, #31 UK) Today (#4 US Alt, UK #44) Disarm (#8 US Alt, UK #11) Rocket (#28 US Mainstream Rock, #89 UK) Standouts: Today, Others: Cherub Rock, Rocket, Disarm, Luna
pretty chill 2.75 no top of the line songs but over-all is gud
I just can’t get over his terrible voice. Things surrounding it sound good though.
Enjoyed: yes Listens: 2 Didn't really enjoy it on my first listen through a speaker. My second try with earphones really helped the experience. Everything felt very tight and calculated. Will defo go back to this at some point
Mediocre Rock album. Well done Smashing Pumpkins. You smashed it!!!
Would like a bit more growl in that grunge! Enjoyed Rocket, Geek U.S.A. I'm wondering if this could be an album I enjoy more with further listens....but....there are other grunge albums I'd be going to should I be in that mood.
Ok
a few good (popular) songs
Smashing pumpkins - some songs very good, some just awful
I liked Disarm because it's sweeter than the other songs, we hear the voice clearlier than others, which I prefer. Finally, that's when the "Rock" type is too strongly expressed that it's too much for me.
This was blandest of the bland. Looking at some of the reviews here it seems like you had to be there to get this. Now 30 years later, it just sounds like one similar song and nothing very special. Could easy cut out about 20 minutes from this thing and lose absolutely nothing.
I knew the popular ones here and generally liked the album. By the end I was a little tired of it though.
Очень средний альбом, сыроват, длинный, слушать тяжело. Всё же пара хороших песен есть, но они преимущественно в начале.
Good album. Really highlights the indie rock of the early 90s sound. Would skip the second album.
Some good songs, good elements, a lot of songs were too similar for me and the lyrics were hard to hear and the same throughout
Modern listening experience on this one. Started with an MP3 at my computer (through external speakers), continued listening to a CD in my bedroom, finished the album streaming Spotify in my car. Without question, it sounded best on the CD, but that patented mid-range buzzsaw guitar came through in every medium. Found I enjoyed the album more than I expected I would. While I own this on CD, I always preferred Mellon Collie back in the day, so now I'm going to go back and listen to that front to back to compare. Nice blend of dynamics on this, though mostly defined by the angst-fueled signature wail of Billy Corgan — vocally and musically. I appreciated Jimmy Chamberlin's drums more than ever on this listen. At the end of the day, I find myself losing the thread of the song with The Smashing Pumpkins — it's more of a vibe than a collection of songs to me on this album. I remember moments, and a couple of standout tunes, but ultimately, three stars because I don't expect to keep going back to listen to the album. Sidenote: I once stood next to Billy Corgan at a concert in NYC, Ric Ocasik's solo band — dude is tall!
The first three songs are still thrilling. “Quiet” sounds like it could have been a Sabbath tune. I also dig “Soma.” The rest kind of bored me now, like so much of 90s alt-rock. Although his guitar tone is killer
I remember when this album came out. Loved "Today" even though it was overplayed on the radio. Listening now I'm finding Billy Corgan's voice monotonous and hard to understand his lyrics. I value this album for its indie influence and hold this band close in my heart but the album doesn't do it for me like it used to.
Although I won't be adding any of these tracks to my playlists – not quite my type of listening – I have to admit that I enjoyed this album, even without trying to frame it against its own genre. True, there are better bands in this space, but a band doesn't have to be great to be good. I felt the instrumentation was good in a classic sense, and the themes were constant, if not the "best".
Decent album
For liking nirvana and similar grungey music, actually wasn’t a huge fan. Mostly vocals, I liked the instrumentals a lot
It's a fine listen but it doesn't do much for me. "Cherub Rock", "Mayonnaise" and "Today" are all good, but I have never found The Smashing Pumpkins' sound to be anything better than just good (Besides "1979" which is amazing, but not on this album). Favorite Song: Today
Awesome album by the smashing pumpkins. Several classic hits on this album. It’s not as long as Mellon Collie but still rocks sufficiently. The album shows the prog rock style that makes them great instrumentally. Billy Corgan has a unique voice and singing style that makes this album different and the smashing pumpkins a solid band. 7.5/10
Really like "Disarm" the rest is ok but forgettable and sums up what I disliked about the 90s mainstream.
Lacking the special massive qualities that I liked in Mellon Collie, and layering on the parts that I don't like as much, which makes sense for a debut. They had growing to do.
Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness is better.
There are some tunes on this but if I was to be critical, its sort the poster child for rock albums seeming about samey
Good, not great.
I know this band when they make a concert in Barcelona with Bon Jovi, Van Halen and The Pretenders. I speak when the begining of the 90s. I went to see The Pretenders and I with a pack I saw the others. I liked these concerts but now it has changed much all.
Smashing Pumpkins always slightly annoyed me. I mean, it was fine then, it is fine now. I guess. "Today" is certainly an all time classic. Takes the album from 2.5 to 3.5 stars.
Muy shoegazey
Instrumentals are great throughout, the guitar is present in a good way. The vocals weird me out a bit at times but not too badly. I think it's among the better 90s music I've heard so far
I knew Today and, surprisingly, Disarm. I think I liked those? Overall not bad but wouldn't put it on again soon.
I don't care for the smashing pumpkins. Billy Corgan sounds like a moped that's struggling up a hill. The album is pretty classic early 90s rock. I like this album even though the vocals are distracting.
svona lala
I liked that there is a song called Silverfuck.
A few excellent tracks but a bit long. It would be a 4 if I thought I would go back to it more. Cover art: 3/5
somewhere between Yo La Tengo and Nirvana - ok but think this ship has sailed
Identifying Smashing Pumpkins : It’s Smashing Pumpkins
Grew on my as I went. I didn't realize I knew so many Smashing Pumpkins songs. Not really for me, but the quality and lasting cultural impact of these tracks is enough to bump it from a 2 to a 3.
Loads better than I remember.
Not bad. Started strong but the last few songs dragged a bit. Hadn't listened to this album before but am definitely a fan of other SP releases.
I think I’ll need to give this album another listen at some point. The songs are quite nice, and the lyrics are very positive and optimistic. My complaint is that so many of the songs sound very similar, but I’m hoping with more listens that I can hear the differences. 6/10
Done good tracks. Rest patchy.
Had this on tape as a 15 year old - never hugely grabbed me then. I think I prefer it now, but not likely to listen to it again. Great, thick, heavy guitar sound.

It's pretty decent I guess. 6/10
Cool j'aime bien certaines instrus et ça me fait penser à d'autres trucs des 90s mais bof fan du chanteur chansons prefs : hummer, soma et luna
It's OK - an album and artist that was in the ecosystem but which I never felt the need to engage with
3/5
not really my type of music but def see the appeal
It's ok
Far more listenable than I had initially envisioned. Some of the tracks are quite mellow and enjoyable, others not so much. Wouldn’t necessarily listen to it again but I did enjoy it
Very stylistically diverse album. You'll find everything here, from more ethereal dream pop to effect dense shoegaze and heavier grunge. Which might be the reason this album has garnered quite a bit of mainstream success as opposed to more pure shoegaze records.
I don't rank Smashing Pumpkins as low as Foo Fighters or RHCP when it comes to arbitrarily beloved but overplayed and overrated 90s bands that have made this list, but they're in that category. This album holds up a bit better than the overlong, overblown Mellon Collie and its headache-inducing compression, but it's still just kind of... meh. A sacred cow of 90s alt rock that really should be skewered and laid to rest. Just because something's popular doesn't mean it's great - the Pumpkins sit in this weird spot in between the grunge scene, shoegaze, and the slightly gothy industrial rock of NIN and Manson, making them a bit of a lowest common denominator of 90s alternative rock. Maybe the should have committed more to a distinctive sound that didn't rely on Billy Corgan's signature nasal delivery?
Some good ones. Good nostalgia.
I don't know. Although it's definitely my type of music, I was never too fond of the smashing pumpkins. Don't hate it, but don't love it either. 3/5
The combination of drums, lyrics and guitar was just perfect.
I owned this tape and I listened to it too much. I saw the Smashing Pumpkins live and had a t-shirt. It inspired an older man who wanted to talk to me about Sartre. But here's the thing - the first half (side A) of Siamese Dream is decent, but everything after the tape flip is not as good. Also, while "Soma" is the best song, the best version of it is when the band played it live and Darcy sang the "close ur eyes and sleep" part, rather than Corgan doing his own backing on the album version. nearly 30 years on, I can't relate to the lyrical topics anymore, the teen drama seems best left in the 90s. It's a good album but I don't need it anymore.
3.25
I had a Siamese dream once. 2 vaginas quite the treat. Not to forget there was 4 tits. Like total recall but with an extra tit. Basically I masturbated while watching total recall and it got a bit weird.
The Pumpkins have largely passed me by over the years. I'm not even that familiar with the hits; It took me two tracks before I hooked onto the tune of Today. And now in quantity the appeal of the music is more obvious: There's a balance of styles, noisy and poppy not by turns but together. I have too much of a bias against the hint of grunge to fully love the record, but as it explodes into Silverfuck I appreciate the musicality. If I can trick myself into hearing the vocal affect as the legacy of hard rock I may be able to fully enjoy the band.
Solid album with some good hits. But the sound of it gets pretty repetitive after a while. I enjoy the vibe that it has, but it relies on that vibe a bit too heavily.
Mijn favoriet is "Today". ***
Also wasnt wild about this despite the fact that its such a cult favorite. Maybe next time...
Often overshadowed by Mellon Collie, Pumpkins 2nd album is a great listen.
This is an album I have pretty mixed feelings on. Cherub Rock is a great song, and there are a few others in there as well. It's a bit too long overall, but still nowhere near as bad as Mellon Collie (which is like 2 hours haha). On the flipside, some of it heads into that shoegazey, alt-rock territory that I don't really like. Corgan's alright when he sounds angry, but when he sounds whiny it's pretty grating. The guitar tone has no meat to it, which matches his voice well - but again, small doses. It's also a real good bit of evidence that the term "grunge" made absolutely no fuckin' sense. It sounds almost nothing like Nirvana or Mudhoney or Soundgarden or Pearl Jam (and none of them really sounded alike either). This has more in common with My Bloody Valentine than Alice in Chains. I listen to a couple of songs from this in other playlists anyway, but I don't think I'd do the full album again. As a whole it doesn't have enough oomph. Still, 3/5.
Smashing pumpkins is one of those bands that on paper I should love - alternative grunge with thoughtful lyrics and creative song writing. But honestly I just haven’t gotten into them, other than the flagship songs. Although I prefer Mellon Collie to Siamese Dream probably because the former had more energy
Not heard this album before, enjoyed it but not one I'll go back to 3
Solid production, but not quite for me. Don't think I've ever listened through a full album of theirs, and it just doesn't resonate.
As far as 90s alt rock bands go, I like the sound of Smashing Pumpkins better than many others (ie., Nirvana, STP). Still, I can't help wishing that their albums showed more range. Aside from the couple of hits on this album, much of the rest of the songs sound largely the same, and much the same as the weaker songs on MC&TIS. That said, Billy Corgan is in great voice on these tracks and the band is tight behind him. Taking the best of these songs and playing them with the best of MC&TIS makes for a damn fine "album" of 90s angst rock, and I'd more likely take that approach than to listen to either album in their entirety.
We already listened to Melancholy and the Infinite Sadness and this album is not as good. It’s less polished. More sloppy. For instance, the guitar solos in Quiet and Geek U.S.A. feel overindulgent. I do like the rocking’ guitar on Geek U.S.A. Cherub Rock is good. As is Today. Then again, I could do without Mayonaise and Spaceboy. It’s a mixed bag for me.
3/5 okeyish, but not after all
Strong first half of the album, back half leaves something to be desired.
Great "Sloging" riffs. Found them way more listenable the older I get. Very DIY sounding. Overall an enjoyable, "headbanger" album if you're in the mood.
There's some really good songs on this album (Cherub Rock, Today, Disarm) but overall it's pretty boring. 3.5 stars.
I'm just not a huge fan of Smashing Pumpkins. It's a whiny kind of 90s which, admittedly, does have some good stuff to it (Disarm is a nice song). So, this counts as more of a midrange album.
Decent album, runs a bit too long and slows down a bit in the second half.
Good stuff.
The grunge scene was a little before my time, and I could never really get into it. Having said that, this was listenable, and I can appreciate the craft.
angsty teen rock from the 90s
Better than expected, quite heavy. Little boring
Solid 90s grunge, a professional, less fru-fru, more down to earth Nirvana.
This one didn't stick with me much on the first listen. I'll have to give it another listen later.
Okay, so now I've listened to both albums by The Smashing Pumpkins, and this one is better than the other. There are more songs that I vibe with and I think that I may actually revisit after. My favourite is Spaceboy.
A pretty nice fun album. Not the best, not the worst. Smashing Pumpkins are still lame though
A mixture of metal and melancholy. One aspect I enjoyed, the other just not my cup of tea.
Some excellent songs in there
This was pretty good actually Favorites: Today Mayonaise Silverfuck Sweet Sweet
Quite good and would probably listen to more.
A mixture of metal and melancholy. One aspect I enjoyed, the other just not my cup of tea.
Few good tunes but nothing that memorable.
Not bad but never warmed to this album
Enjoyed it. No bad songs on there but also no amazing ones, rattled along nicely.
Listening conditions - home theatre, a little bit distracted but with Smashing Pumpkin’s further reading. Albums First Rodeo? - i don’t think so. Stand out tracks Cherub Rock - Banger what a great opener. Today - Ionic Smashing Pumpkins, still holds up as an anthem today. An era and genre defining track. Silverfuck - Yeah that’s a great journey. Miss Soma - dull and long, nothing special and following Disarm (which is a very close contender for a stand out track) just really puts this track into bad light. It’s a good album and I try not to listen with hindsight but that can be hard and honestly apart from the singles there’s not much here and I can’t help but think their next album (Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness) is what will always define the band and what they were trying to pull off here. Note this album really picks up again towards the end, looking at you Luna.
fun and upbeat. idk
gitara koja uleti na pocetku- B r u t a l n a
- boring - like from a dream
Prima album, ik was even vergeten dat hun gitaarrifjes soms toch echt moddervet zijn. Dat gepiel en geneuzel daar kan ik slechter tegen..
Never listened to it in full before, but I do like it. Corgans voice is not for everyone but there a couple of really good tracks on here.
Quite melodic
It was fine, but I'm not a huge fan of grunge or the Smashing Pumpkins, so it was not my favorite.
"Lover, lover let's pretend We're born as innocents Cast into the world With apple eyes" (Geek USA) "I'll sing for you If you want me to I'll give to you And it's a chance I'll have to take And it's a chance I'll have to break" (Luna) yo a los dos minutos: bueno, tampoco es tan deprimente esto. yo a los diez minutos: deja que ponga Montero porque me voy a tirar por la ventana.
Mayonaise is the coolest song this band ever did And it's basically 'Sometimes' by MBV.
Cherub Rock and Today still hold up. Some good, a lot of okay.
Used to listen to this loads as a yute; round my mate Simon's, Virtua Fighter 2 on the PS1 and sound off so we could listen to The Pixies, Mark Lanegan and Smashing Pumpkins. Even with that healthy shot of nostalgia in the plus column for this album, Billy Corgan's voice is such that it's still hard going in places. Not bad, though.
The year my brother was born! I have a feeling Cherub Rock was playing right as he came into this world. This is a great guitar hero song and I haven’t listened to this album before so I’m excited to see what’s in store. Hopefully not too many pumpkins were harmed in the making of this album. There is a certain irony in this second song, I didn’t find it to be Quiet at all. I don’t think I’ve heard Today before today but it sounds an awful lot like a Simple Plan plan. Ok I have heard it before now. Maybe Simple Plan hadn’t I won’t presume. This is another instance where I am not a huge fan of Smashing Pumpkins (I certainly wouldn’t do that to a neighbor) but they have some great songs and a few of them are on this album. This does feel like a seminal 90’s album. Something someone would put on while they stare at the posters in their room of Duran Duran and The Ramones as they struggle to do their homework when they really just want to fight the system aka skip class. Rocket stands out to me as another good song from this album. I’m seeing now that we are commenting on the album covers so I really like this one as well, very alt rock.
Not my cup of tea but well made and i am sure someone will like it!
Mye nostalgi i dette
Overrated
Doesn't hit the same as when you're 13
More my kind of thing than Bjork (yesterday's album). I know SP are regarded very highly, but it must be over my head. I like it just fine, but don't see the greatness. After a while, some of the songs started sounding the same to me. I feel like the drums are often too heavy. I will say, I love Disarm, especially the acoustic version (track 17)
This was a lot better than I expected, I’d go as far to say I enjoyed it
Has that wall of guitar sound that comes across kinda dated to me now. Some catchy bits throughout but it all comes down to the fact that I don't like Billy Corgan's voice.
I would have rated this a lot higher in High School, but it's still not bad. I certainly wouldn't' change the radio if any Smashing Pumpkins came on, but it still feels very "of the decade".
This album gave me a really big headache, then I thought it was class, then I thought it was alright. There should be a list of ones to go back to.
I like Today, but not a big Smashing Pumpkins fan overall. I think maybe because his voice is annoying.
It has some hits but didn't do it for me overall
grunge but not too angry
I can imagine if I was a moody 90s teen living in Seattle (or Chicago) this would really appeal to me. But I’m not, and it doesn’t.
Okay, I dont love the pumpkins, all kinda sounds the same to me.
Love the instrumentals. Not a huge fan of 90s rock but I liked this album. Stand out tracks: Cherub rock, Quiet, Today, Soma
7.7/10
few great moments but way too long
Kinda goes on too long, but pretty good. Has a few fantastic songs.
Noteworthy songs were today, hummer, and soma
My feelings towards The Smashing Pumpkins can be described in one word, 'Meh.' It's not that they're a bad band, or bad musicians, I'm just not a fan. I cannot stand Corgan's vocal stylings, as it is an unholy abomination of wheezy, breathy, and whiny to my ears. My own personal disinterest aside, I can acknowledge the strengths of their musicianship and songwriting ability. They are iconic figures of alt-rock and rock, deservedly so, and this album is very historically significant. That said, it's just not for me.
I don’t care for the Smashing Pumpkins. The worst vocal from that genre with ok riffs. 2/5
I’ve tried, I don’t get it, I don’t like it
Well, that was dreary wasn’t it?
OK
Billy Corgan sucks. His voice only gets worse and worse as time has gone on and this album was early in Smashing Pumpkins career
First listen thoughts BORRRINGGGGG Cherub Rock - 67 Quiet - 73 Today - 76 Hummer - 76 Rocket - 73 Disarm - 76 Soma - 61 Geek U.S.A - 72 Mayonaise - 70 Spaceboy - 68 Silverfuck - 60 Sweet Sweet - 80 Luna - 76
While I can see how this would be a seminal album in the 90s, I simply can’t be bothered with it nowadays. It’s overstuffed with songs that all share painfully similar structure and riffs, and Corgan’s voice gets ear piercing towards the end of the record. Cherub Rock is great though.
I don't like the vibes of grunge At least some tunes seemed manageable
Not for me.
Count me as being happy to leave Smashing Pumpkins in the ‘90s — it’s well-performed and -produced alt-rock in search of better songwriting with something to actually say. It’s difficult to decipher what Billy Corgan is singing about, and I suspect that’s no accident. Frankly, I have always cringed at the sound of his voice. Songs like the hopelessly overwrought “Disarm” feel bombastic for bombast’s sake. Also, they have a (misspelled) song about mayonnaise?
Grunge, all the sound the same after an initial different start. Dddit, dddit drumming and lot and lots of distortion. Listened to it but wouldn't listen again.
Tried and fail to get past the whiney vocals.
I kind of hate Billy Corgan's voice lol
I don't like 90's rock. The drums sound nice though.
Just so boring.
This is di-rect-ly in my wheelhouse. Contemporaneously I mean. And it was massively popular on the scene. I hated it then, I’m not too keen now. But it’s not quite as bad as I used to say. I’ll give her a 1.51 so that it can round up
I thought I would like this album - I didn’t. Cringed me out because I felt like it was trying to be cool. I liked ‘soma’ but that was it. Wont be listening to it again but gave it a 2 instead of a 1 because I can appreciate the music in some parts
Its ok
Heavier than I expected. Not in the right listening frame of mind, unfortunately. Will listen again some time.
I should like this but I really don't. I don't get The Smashing Pumpkins - never have, never will His voice is awful and this was boring and whiny 2 ⭐️
Very long. Got fed up with vocal store.
Almost three
Pas ma came
Billy's voice, ugh. Billy's personality, double ugh. I will groove to "Cherub Rock" and "Mayonnaise" is the only SP song in my personal music library so I can't deny there are some great moments here.
This is the kind of album they play in thrift shops way too loud and I’ve trained myself to drown it out lest I be overstimulated. Which doesn’t bode well for my ranking of this album but I’ll try to be fair. I kind of liked it !! I like the sound but nothing stood out to me. A part of me wants to listen to it more and a part of me wants to not bother with it again and that internal battle lands this album at a 2 for now I’m afraid.
Enjoyed listening to this.
Grunge is not a genre I can listen to for more than an hour or so and the Smashing Pumpkins make 2+hr long albums. Not bad but hard to listen to for 2+hrs straight.
Nope
I didn’t hate this as much as I expected. Which, given its score, tells you how much I was expecting to hate it.
Musically interesting but that one note whining from billy corgan is intolerable
Entiendo que pueda gustar, y también se que con el tiempo me va a empezar a copar más, pero tampoco la pavada. La expectativa me hace pensar que en forma de chiste es una verga masiva.
I’m not a big smashing pumpkin fan to begin with. It kind of sounds the same throughout the album. Some good stuff but I wouldn’t listen to it with my own free will again. Some good guitar tones tho.
Vond deze erg heftig soms haha
Fun to hear the hits but overall not for me
It was at a Smashing Pumpkins concert that I became aware of the studio wizardry that goes into making the band I was hearing live sound like they do on an album. That was during the Melon Collie and the Infinite Sadness tour, who's namesake I like less than this album. However I don't like Billy Corgan's voice at any time, pre or post-studio wizardry..
They’re calling it the most Okay rock album of all time. What if we took everything great about my bloody valentine and stepped on it? Literally stepped on it? These songs are so fucking flat. Why do so many of them 5+ minutes?? They overstay their welcome!! Cherub Rock is great. Mayonaisse is great I can’t lie.
Luna’s not bad. If the album were instrumental I’d rate it a 3. Idk what it is about his voice but I instantly tune out. Like for a good chunk of this record I forgot I was listening to music.
The songs that have made it into the zeitgeist stand out for sure. I think mostly I just glaze over with this. Part of it is the vocals for sure. His voice just doesn’t do it for me. It’s not offensive to listen to, just doesn’t resonate. The guitar tones are dope, but I feel like it’s missing a weight that I need from it, production wise and emotionally.
No es de mi agrado la verdad, la puedo escuchar, pero no me guardaria ningun tema.
Very whiny and long-winded, after three songs I was already checking if I was close to done. Not my thing.
Un poco aburrido el disco, de la mitad a la última canción se pone mejor, pero me parece que no es el mejor disco del grupo
Second Smashing Pumpkins album on this list, and the same reaction as the first. I just don't like this band. It's not even that all their songs are terrible - it's just that the whole presentation from the nasally, whispery vocals to the irritating guitar tone perpetually grates. There's enough decent material on here to bump it above hopeless, but I really don't want to hear anything more from this band.
Harrdorck, Metall was ist das, es hört sich ambivalent an, Man meint immer das nächste stück wird besser...
Too noisy in general. Disarm is great.
no me gustó, guardé un par de temas (los más livianos) pero los demás son demasiado pesados, es un rock que te agota rápido y no son muy distintos los temas entre sí, me aburrió en su mayoría, la voz del cantante no me gustó
I liked a few songs, but this is mostly not for me.
Every time I listen to "Belong" by the Pains of Being Pure at Heart, it makes me really want to give Siamese Dream another chance. And every time I listen to Siamese Dream, I think the guitars sound incredibly cool for a few minutes before I get tired of Billy Corgan after "Today" is over. Except for that one time I made it to "Disarm" before I got tired of him, of course. It's still way too long for me to want to listen to it all that much, but those guitars really do sound cool.
Ich mag den Gitarrensound und die Drums. Der Gesang ist für mich wie eine Gabel auf einer Tafel.
"the cia cancelled rock"
Good album Song I like: Today, Disarm, Luna
Meh
I’ve listened to this album a fair few times now and at this point I’m happy to say it just doesn’t click with me the same way it seems to for most people, judging by its average rating (at the time of writing, only 10% of reviewers have given fewer than 3 stars). There is clearly some quality here, but it’s buried underneath an overbearing, abrasive and pretty unmelodic ‘wall of guitar overdubs’. More significantly, however, I just can’t get on with Billy Corgan’s voice, which by the end of the (in my opinion, too long) album is rather grating.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again but I just don’t vibe with 90s music in general. This just does nothing for me. Some of the songs are fine, have some cool moments, but overall it just annoys me somehow.
Ugh. Boring.
Better than Melan Collie purely for shorter run time with less filler. Not as many banger tracks but much more digestible. Again, this one could be trimmed down, especially the longer running songs. I like "Silverfuck" but at over 8 mins...it dragged. "Disarm" is the best one with the other known hit "Today" doing the heavy lifting. "Cherub Rock" and "Luna" not bad either. The gritty guitar and whiny Corgan work better on Siamese Dream. Not as annoying. Still not a huge fan of Smashing...2.37 stars.
Naja neh
Reading the other reviews on here, this album not very surprisingly holds a lot of weight for a lot of people who have been listening to it more or less since the 90s. I’m coming at it from a slightly different perspective. I liked this album a lot at the time, and I was excited to catch them when they stopped in my town for Lollapalooza 94, but they were absolutely horrendous live. If you think I’m exaggerating, here’s an account of it by Tom Zillich in the Peace Arch News: “Chicago’s Smashing Pumpkins, on the other hand, headlined the festival, and that day in Cloverdale is universally remembered as a horrible one for singer/guitar player Billy Corgan and his crew. My pal Cory Raven remembers the Pumpkins as “the worst live performance I’ve ever seen, to this day.” “Corgan wasn’t great live at the best of times, but I think he was intentionally singing horribly that night,” Raven recalls. “It sounded like a wounded bird with a bad cold. It was shockingly bad to the point where when you saw people in the days and weeks after and Lollapalooza came up in conversation, someone would often mention how bad the Pumpkins were.” Source: https://peacearchnews.com/2020/04/03/photos-the-day-28000-lollapalooza-goers-rocked-cloverdale-in-1994/ I don’t know how many live bands I’ve seen since. Hundreds, certainly, possibly in the low thousands, and they rank among the worst. For a band of that stature and size, absolutely the worst and it’s not even close. As a teenager who deeply felt their music at the time, it felt crushing, and turned me against the band. With the distance of a little over thirty years, and very few feelings of generosity towards the band, this an okay, if not great listen. Billy Corgan’s much-lauded guitar sound is massively overrated. It’s compressed and saturated and while it sounds huge, it totally lacks dynamics. The lyrics are mostly angsty cliches, which was the style of the time, and they haven’t improved with time and perspective, but it does feel less bloated and self-indulgent than it did on Mellon Collie. Sometimes it comes together and works though, particularly on the moments where the band allows for some relative quiet, like on “Disarm”, “Soma”, and what is the highlight of this album for me, “Mayonnaise”. Though it’s largely external to the music itself, some moments of this album did make me think back to being a teenager listening to this. I’m certain that I didn’t feel as light and as free as I’m remembering it, but the problems of being a teenager feel small in retrospect.
for how much hype the smashing pumpkins get, i found this boring and uninspired.
I know a lot of people really like the Smashing Pumkins. They were never my thing, I tried, and I treid again today. But alas, for me it's a no, for me it i a 2.
over an hour of sound
Milquetoast rock. Meh.
Boring?
Could use a remaster. So muddy
Was alright but not a super big fan since I generally don't like this era of grungy rock. 2/5
Sometimes chaotic, sometimes annoying, sometimes melodic. Always surprising.
Prima
Zu laut.
Noisy teenage angst. I didn't need this.
Ärsyttävän kuuloista tuo Corganin määintä. Eikä nuo biisitkään erikoisia ole, kaks pinnaa.
I just really don't like rock music that much, some of the songs were fine especially when they had more of an acoustic sound to them. Disarm, Sweet Sweet, and Luna were by far the best examples of that.
Ugh I like smashing pumpkins and maybe I was just in a mood but this album sucked lmao (besides the songs I already had on my liked)
I love alternative rock but it was Too heavy rock for me, ik the vibe wasnt just for me but i enjoyed trying to listen it for some minutes.
Neviem to dopocuvat Raz sa este pokusim 😶
This is not good.
12/01/2026 1. cherub rock - like the drums at the start! very 90s alternative rock, was def expecting that though. guitars are great, especially in the chorus. very angsty... bit emo for me... 2. quiet - love the sound at the start... guitar solo is reallllllly great!! same as the other song... too teenage-angsty 3. today - wasn't mad about it at the start, but just got to the chorus and loving it! beatles lyrics! just not enjoying it.... generally not a big fan of american 90s indie rock, sometimes, the vocals and lyrics get a bit grating. *4. hummer - had a break to go to college and have come back with a full blown cold. not looking forward to the next hour of my life :( the intro to this sounds like one of the songs by lightning bolt i had to listen to a few days ago.... bass is really nice in this one. like the slower, mellower instruments. not looking forward to the vocals though.... just not my thing :/ the lyrics are nicer (at least at the start) in this one though... less whiny/emo. liking the quieter part almost five minutes in... very lovely soft guitar, i know the whole point is the grungey, aggressive guitars, but this is more my jam. love how dreaaammmmyyy it is <3 5. rocket - sounds like a rockier slowdive song. was looking forward to this album going into it as they seemed like a band i would like, but am rethinking this now.... 6. disarm - i can feel my stress rashes getting worse as i get deeper into this song.... liking the more orchestral sound, but his voice is so grating to me and i hate the emo lyrics with that bloody whiny voice. sounds so 90s and i have no nostalgia for it, so i literally do not care!! just boring to me.... not even fun to listen to. 7. soma - please stay quiet..... liking the softer sound... liking the softer vocals more as well. still leaning a bit emo. loving the bass and guitar..... like hummer, but dreamy throughout rather than just at the end. just got loud. killing myself. i like the distortion, but it's too much for me. 8. geek usa - just fuzzy guitars layered on top of each other.... barrage of noise and not in a good way - especially with the bloody vocals on top. love when the songs get dreamy and quieter though!!!! 9. mayonaise - quieter, more psychadelic guitar at the start.... the louder guitar objectively sounds really great, but is just not for me. it seems to be the entire draw of this album though, which is making this a miserable listen. 10. spaceboy - bob dylan reference?? again, loving the more dreamier songs... reallly love the keyboard? (doesn't entirely sound like a keyboard but i cannot think properly right now) in the back.. 11. silverfuck - back to noise :( might try some of these songs on a day where i can actually breathe properly and don't have a headache. really loving the distorted guitar, but cannot connect to the music in any way. about halfway through the song and a gorgeous, soft, wavey guitar has just started.... very echoey, shoegazey.... thinking of different ways to say dreamy..... 12. sweet sweet - thank god this one is shorter. my headache has significantly worsened since starting listening to this.... liked this one though.... *13. luna - liking the start of this. very sweet :) can hear it building up.... not just distorted guitars piled up on each other until it becomes noise!! love the strings in the back. even though i loved this one, cannot say i'm not overjoyed that this is over now... probably not the best album to listen to when all congested with a banging headache. why is this album so long. can't say i would ever listen to any of these songs again.... i really liked the quieter songs, but a lot of this album is constant loud hard/grunge rock, which isn't always my thing. whiny 90s american singers are also a hate of mine (cannot listen to rem, they might be giants or most pavement songs as a result), so did not enjoy the vocals... the softer vocals (like in luna) didn't grate me as much. some of the lyrics were a bit emo and annoying.... but some were also really great! feels like something i'd like on paper, but don't feel anything except sheer boredom when listening to most of the songs :/
Not really my thing
not for me, generally just not a rock fan at all
Wegweisendes Album, aber ich hasse einfach die Stimme von Billy Corgan
Made it halfway thru. Idk it sounds like something I would like but I wasn't meshing with any songs 2/10
Nothing
Energetic, with a couple of big hits. The lead singer has detestable politics and beliefs.
Sok
good example of grunge
Disarm Mayonnaise Luna
Its fine..pretty good 5/10
This one is a challenge. I would probably like Smashing Pumpkins a lot except for one big thing: Billy Corgan’s vocals (also Billy Corgan himself but that’s not really relevant here). He sounds like a strangulated cat and that’s being kind. The songs alone? Pretty good. But I just can’t get past his voice so it’s all ruined for me. It’s pretty hard to ignore a lead singer, you know?
This took me back to high school. I was never a big SP fan, tbh the guys voice annoys me. Probably wouldn't listen again.
Maybe I don’t like the smashing pumpkins
I don't like Smashing Pumpkins, mostly because of Billy Corgan's awful singing. There are a few songs on here that I like, and where I can kind of overlook Billy's voice. So, I guess this likely ranks as my favorite Smashing Pumpkins album, but that belies the general sense of loathing I feel for Smashing Pumpkins.
No album should be more than about 40 minutes. This album is no exception and would have been a better one with 25 minutes cut. I liked some of it, better it was too long and the lack of curation really hampered my enjoyment.
Bändi on kova ja varmaan runollista sanoitusta mutta laulaja kuulostaa välillä koiran vinkulelulta
The best way I can describe this album is that it makes me feel carsick without being in a car.
Too much smashing and not enough pumpkins! I don't have the level of angst needed to relate to this album. Too many songs that sounded the same and not a sound I particularly enjoyed. They kept tricking me with varied nicer/gentler starts to songs just to return to exactly the same noise as all the other songs. Liked (most of) the second half a lot more than the first, but was already somewhat done with the whole album. Favourite song: Sweet Sweet Least: Silverfuck (could have been a lot of them but this one was longest)
Band is good Corgan is not
I've always managed to resist Smashing Pumpkins. Too much anger, not enough soul. Each to their own. Siamese Dream did little to cause a rethink. It's not a bad album. It even has its moments with Today. But it sounds like an album that makes you want to hibernate in the bedroom, rather than get out there and get shit done. I choose getting shit done.
Too slow
Inte riktigt min kopp. Inte dåligt men kommer antagligen aldrig lyssna igen.
Slaps roof of cd. You can fit so many of the same distorted guitar sound and bad vocals in this bad boy
Didn’t really enjoy this. It had its moments, but overall it is dull and uninspiring. Very overrated band. Good for what it is, but no plans on revisiting.
Never really dug them. Mayonnaise and Zero are good, Today is fine. The rest is just there. I know my opinion is unpopular
Was okey, nothing special tbh.
Nirvana-lite delivers yet another boring album, sounding like all other alt rock from the 90s. I love a good dirty guitar tone, but when it’s on every song, they all start to mush together. On top of that, I’ve always had a disdain for Billy Corgan’s vocal style. I can’t understand a word he says and all his melodies sound the same to me. I don’t hate this album, but i definitely won’t listen to it again. It’s too repetitive for my taste, and the sonic palate on display doesn’t jive with me
Good start of the grunge genre. Will always be a nirvana fan though
Instrumentally it's great, but Billy Corgan's voice has always been really grating to me.
Some songs needed to be shorter. Some unmusical stuff and too much distortion. Some good songs in there.
Always found the pumpkins overrated. Liked gish and theres a few good songs on this and melon collie. But overall not a fan.
I don’t get the appeal. They have a few good songs, but everything except “Sweet Sweet” sounds the same on this album: droning, crunchy guitars, few hooks, and Billy Corgan, who ‘sings’ like he’s pushing out a painful shit on each track. I really can’t stand Corgan’s voice nor his whole personality.
The plague of good music aligned with a terrible vocal and worse lyrics continues.
Another familiar album, which I've not listened through that many times, atleast with thought and focus. It feels like a lot of filler songs with the classic hits and few other great songs. The music feels quite dated, especially the grander songs, not something I can honestly say about some other albums of the era that I still like. Smashing Pumpkins never was on my top list for anything, but I've listened to my share of Mellon Collie. In the streaming era tho only few songs have even entered my playlists and only very specific reasons. The band is quirky, grandiose and a bit long winded.
The whole album is not it, but there are a few songs that stood out to me and that I've added to my favorites.
A little too long, and some songs become very whiny. Misses out on the cinematic nature of Mellon collie and that hurts it.
..
(A3/V5)
tried to get into this before and did again but i just can't
Gotta love a million compressed guitars blowing up on every chorus. Add that to any song ever and you have a better song. The birthday song, the 1-800-kars-4-kids jingle, the soundtrack to Avatar... all would be immensely improved with dense exploding layers of guitars. Unfortunately, that's the only thing good on this album, and it only happens on a few songs. The "ballads" are bad, Corgan's voice has no real range, and the drums are recorded weird. A handful of songs are worth listening to every so often but they are repetitive and boring. Oh well, worth a listen every decade or so.
I can see the appeal but it’s just really not my type of music tbh. 37/100
Never liked these guys. I guess I don't understand the appeal.
Maybe stunning 30 years ago. Felt a bit overblown and indulgent. Made me want to listen to Nirvana. BC is now a wrestling promoter.
meh didn’t listen to the full thing, was not inspired
Standard sludge rock. Kind of a one trick pony but listenable
I really just couldn't get into it. hated his voice and just lacked cohesion/good melodies good moments but overall not a fan
Somehow this feels like it drags on longer than Mellon Collie.
nothing special to be honest
Billy corgans voice is an acquired taste that I can't seem to acquire
Never been a huge Smashing Pumpkins fan. After listening to this album, I still am not
This album didn't really do it for me, perhaps it is my lack of nostalgia for my formative years but Smashing Pumpkins was never on my radar except for the mega hits that you even hear on your generic local radio. I was surprised how many shoegaze elements and how prominent thick guitar driven walls of sounds were. I think the production is great and despite liking these atmospheric guitar drenched riffs that are layered, it was not that engaging. Songs meander on way to long for my taste and I know that the vocals are often a hot debate but I thought it was fine. It all works but it wasn't for me. I feel that songs require a bit more dynamic range or other elements to make them stand out more. It all kind of sounds the same to be frank. However, there were some really good songs here that I like Soma which had a bit more going for it. Disarm is also a nice departure from other songs. I don't think I'll revisit this any time soon.
Fine. Feels like a soundtrack you'd hear at a Bushwick thrift store. A few standouts, but suffers from the double LP length problem
There’s a fine line between an album that represents a cohesive sound and one where the artist shows too much of their range & produces an incoherent set of (possibly very good) songs. This album demonstrates the other end of the spectrum: when the focus on the band’s sound results in a bunch of songs that all seem the same. The sound here is recognizable (probably because it was pouring out of every radio & speaker in the late 1990’s), but it’s hard to tell one song from the next. Testosterone-driven lyrics over a wall of guitar power-chords — got it, don’t need to keep listening.
Not my favorite Punkins, but still pretty formative for me. Some songs stand out as absolute classics of the genre. Others are tiring. I just realized on this listen why I have such a hard time listening to SD straight through, and I think it’s the wall of noise attack with no dynamic range. It just tires me out after a while. Melon Collie is still the best for showcasing some different styles and sounds. Also, looking back, how did we give Billy a pass for that voice?! It’s so bad. I’m ok with not-great singers (see 5-star Dylan rating) but he is just terrible.
Sounded okay to me, the more I listened the more I hated the lead singer's voice. Felt similar to listening to Nickelback and eventually I tried to tune out the lead singer's voice. Its unique and all, but after a while its so tiring to listen to.
Kid's menu Deftones
5/10
I don't understand what they mean, and I could really give a f*ck.
I love Today and Disarm, but other than that the songs all sound the same. Good live band, bad listening band.
Boring. Too many songs, each one is too long, and they all sound the same. The 90s were a musical sinkhole.
extremely 90s
I can tell this is good and was fun to listen through once, but 'cause I'm not a rock fan not many stood out particularly EXCEPT: Today which is sweet. Gorgeous guitar on Hummer. Luna is lovely too.
Ok sound.
Billy Corgan can make some songs very good, some highlights like Spaceboy, but to me a bit too slow.
