Reviews (page 10 of 14)
I've heard all of Siamese Dream because someone else has put this album on to listen to. I've listened to several songs from this album and from TheSmashing Pumpkins in general. "Today" and "Disarm" are two tracks from this album that jump back into my personal rotation every now and then. Overall, the album feels like a strong 4 stars. No tracks felt like I should skip them, and some of the tracks are marked for replay.
Check
high 3 or low 4 - went with the 4
I was surprised by how many songs I liked.
Great album. Great voice. Not their best(personal opinion) but still a great album,
Not a big grunge fan, but some good stuff on here. “Mayonnaise” absolutely slaps. Enjoy some of the quieter moments. Maybe I’ll grow into this type of music more in future!
Outstanding album. Comfortably their best and, although not strictly grunge, one of the best from that era. Possibly second only to Nevermind.
Yummy yummy
good riffs. good songs. good.
One of the best albums to come out in the post-Nevermind era.
Just some solid 90's alt rock right here. I don't think it has that star factor the Mellon Collie does, but this is damn fine.
it's taken me almost 30 years to get around to listening to this. I'm a fool....should have listened sooner - great album, and thats after 1 x listen!
Billy Corgan is undeniably talented but I’ve never been the biggest fan of his voice. With this album, I actually liked the middle more than either end with the exception of cherub rock. Today is overrated
i put this on expecting to give it a three because i've always liked the singles but not the whole album but today this hit HARD. something about corgan's voice takes me back to being a little kid listening to the radio and thinking about how big the world was.
Enjoyable but I had to be in the right frame of mind!
I like a lot of The Smashing Pumpkins' music and I'm always impressed by Billy Corgan's songwriting, composition, and performance skills. Incredible musicianship and a severely underrated guitarist in my view (I think that's for two main reasons: (1) he's a singer, the frontman, and he's a multi-instrumentalist; and (2) his personality, or at least how it's shown to us via media). This was only their second studio album as a band, yet it shows complexity and a signature style. I don't love all the tracks on this album but it does contain some real gems. Really good stuff overall.
As much as I want to complain about these songs being "played out" on the radio or complain about my perceptions of Billy Corgan steadily degrading over time ... I just don't care, because this album is way too good. I also openly acknowledge my fondness for this album is likely unduly swayed by nostalgia. What really drew me into this album, and still endears me to it today, is that it is founded in the grunge/alt musical sensibility, but it goes way beyond the simplistic structures of that genre. The songs are full of contours. They have intros, transitions, swings in guitar effects, phrases that build and climb, pauses of calm punctuated with eruptions of fuzz blaring guitars. I think the tracks 'Soma', 'Mayonaise', and 'Silverfuck' demonstrates what I'm talking about perfectly. Some of the greatest tracks/moments on this album, that come to my mind are, the first 57 seconds of 'Cherub Rock', 'Hummer', 'Rocket', 'Soma', 'Silverf*ck', and 'Rhinoceros' - oops, wrong album.
3.5/5. Pretty decent grunge alt-rock.
Smashing Pumpkins were one of the first bands that I listened to and one of the first cds I ever bought. I enjoyed this album and it brought back a ton of nostalgia.
There were a couple of absolute bangers (disarm, cherub rock) but the rest of the album didn't really capture me all that much. Some songs are definitely in the rotation already/going into the rotation after this, but some are very forgettable.
Enjoyed very much always been a fan of Smashing Pumpkins
Never listened to a Smashing Pumpkins album in full before, actually enjoyed it. Some great tracks. 9/10
good one
Siamese Dream was part of my 90s/00s playlists. Some of these songs are perfect and have grown in me through the years: Quiet, Disarm, Rocket, Mayonnaise… It’s a great Alternative Rock piece that has influenced several artists for the last 30 years
Love it
There were a couple of absolute bangers (disarm, cherub rock) but the rest of the album didn't really capture me all that much. Some songs are definitely in the rotation already/going into the rotation after this, but some are very forgettable.
The guitars we so sick
I don't usually love this genre, but this has a pretty distinctive sound and I found myself surprised at how much l liked it.
This is so quintessential 90s. Time machines are real
Good stuff
I will always praise Corgan’s songwriting, but the production really makes it hard to listen to some of the heavier songs. The album shines when the songs are softer without his really bothersome distortion. Nevertheless, there are classic songs like Disarm and Today on this album. Worthy of a 4.
Great Album with a high quality of songs. Feels somewhat like a textbook alternative rock album
Muy Smashing Pumpkins.
It's a great album, although it is a bit more heavy metal than I might like, I gotta admit it's not bad. If you're looking for a powerful album that combines really strong instrumentals and powerful guitar with some not very clear lyrics, then this is your album. 'Today' is actually a brilliant song
Overall good album. Talented musicians and the sound is very 90s nostalgic.
I suspect I'd need to listen to this a few times to really get it.
4 stars
gott stuff
A doozy
Nevermind but not as good. Great textures for the first few songs.
War früher kein Mega Smashing Pumpkins Fan aber habs jetzt echt sehr genossen - Laut/leise, große Gesten und Gefühle, 90er as fuck, unique Gesang, Sound und tolles Songwriting
Great album. Alt Rock champions.
Excellent album, would recommend
i played cherub rock on guitar hero 3 back in like 2008. that game formed my music taste as a teen and unfortunately i didn't take to cherub rock that much. listening to it now i still don't but this album is nice. really regret not giving it a chance back then as i think it would have a had a healthy impact on me. the highlights for me on this album are the more quieter moments. they really shine.
Simply smashing
'I don't understand what they mean and I could really give a fuck' All jokes aside, this is a solid album - probably their best as it's more confident than Gish and more consistent than the fantastic-but-sprawling Melon Collie. Cherub Rock kicks things off with volcanic energy, Today is remarkably beautiful, and Disarm disarms me with a smile
It's an excellent album . Though it veers towards the metal side of things, not my favorite genre, from time to time, it dies so with a lack of bombast. The song remains the raison d'etre and the songs are generally catchy and melodic. I generally don't lo e the guitar sound but certainly not intolerable in context. 4.5 🌟
Such a good album
So, so much more enjoyable & listenable then Mellon Collie. Solid, propulsive rock.
This is a rock masterpiece. Both 1) of a particular time, and 2) timeless. Mayonnaise is the underdog here and, for this listener, the beating heart of the album (along with Disarm). Corgan may be a bit of a douchebag, but he's also a fuckin' genius.
Good album! Felt like a classic.
No one else really sounds like Corgan at his best
Maybe I listened to this record too late. But you can tell which bands were influenced by this record and all of the subsequent pop-culture that came out immediately around its release. I'd listen to it again but probably wouldn't buy the record.
Listening this album makes me feel 15 again, but only in the good ways.
Great to listen to!
Surprisingly good
today was a huge deal when it came out, and it's a pretty good song, as is disarm; mayonnaise is the winner off this one for me, though. as a personal disclaimer, i am now and have always been a huge sucker for dreamy vocals and crunchy-washy guitars...which is, of course, their whole sound. that said...i've always kinda thought billy was just a bit of a tool, which makes it harder to really love their music. ...but this is still pretty durn good.
Decent
Excellent album.
This album meanders in places which is why I dropped a star, but damn me if it isn't worth 4 stars for Cherub Rock, Today and Disarm. I'm not the most ardent of Smashing Pumpkins fans due to Billy and the gang disappearing up their own bottoms for the next few albums. This album however is a testament to blend of sounds the band embraced, from Grunge to metal to Dream pop, Sonic Youth style noise and R.E.M.-like sensitivity.
4.34 Quintessential early '90s alt-rock album. Shoutout to the first minute of the track Soma— it made me stop working just to repeat and listen to it again. Trancelike in the best sense possible.
This is the album i think of when asked what the US Alternative music scene sounded like in the 90's. Its a bigger rock sound than most of their contemporaries attempted. They led the transition of Alt rock bans moving from the bars to the stadiums maintaining an underachiever vibe but borrowing hooks from classic stadium rock bands, all underpinned by powerful songwriting. All that is missing is a decent rock singers voice. He's like a pound shop Kurt Cobain. 4/5
Maybe not the greatest day I’ve ever known, but up there
middle school days, great album
majonäs var bra. Gillar överlag
atmospheric alt rock
Pumpkin fuckers. Just in time for Halloween.
Billy Corgan - tactically inept cabbage head.
Wow, wasn’t prepared to like this as much as I did. They got SO HYPED UP later in their career that I just refused to pay attention to them. I’ve never listened to the whole album before, even though individual tracks are basically my youth’s soundtrack. Very Seattle grunge. It really holds up as a sound of an era.
Well it's got to be one of the best album openings ever! Cherub Rock is an all time classic. Quiet is then good, as a technical show of hands, with some weird time signature stuff going on. Then you get Today, which is one of the best songs ever! Obviously drops off from here, but Hummer is a rare good long song. Rocket is less exciting, but then Disarms big epic beautiful sad balladry wins you back! Soma opens feeling like a Mogwai track. It's like the comedown from the previous tracks big bold production. It goes small and internal, very nicely. After this, it never hits such great heights again... But I'd say it had probably done enough already.
Siamese Dreams by Smashing Pumpkins (1993) Smashing Pumpkins (probably better titled “The Billy Corgan Project”) deliver a signature sound on this album. The Corgan sound is characterized by a near-symphonic texture of guitar overdubbing and the idiosyncratic lead vocals of Mr. Corgan, driving a message of cathartic honesty that borders on the uncomfortable, if not narcissistic. The lyrics are nearly embarrassing (for the listener, not Corgan) for their transparency and reckless lack of reserve, but that feature does little harm because Corgan’s abandonment of diction makes the words (sans lyrics sheet) all but indecipherable anyway. His voice alternates between two timbres, which are both substandard and extraordinarily interesting at the same time. One timbre is airy and elvish; the other is whiny and harsh. Supply your own synonyms. It is a voice that is well suited the very limited melodies Corgan has composed, which are all-too-heavily reliant on favorite intervals and loopy slurs. Blah. Having said that, this is still a very good album, if for no other reason than the technical excellence of the sound. It is galvanizing and pleasing. Hard driving rock riffs are layered over and over with multiple electric rhythm guitar tones. This record reveals the beauty of rock guitar. And while the technique could have been monotonous, this foundational Corgan sound is flavored with striking and innovative variety, including well performed if understated solos. The solo section at 3:04 on “Mayonaise” (sic) is great. And I don’t even like mayonnaise. One extraordinary highlight on this album is the integration of elements of symphony orchestra on “Disarm” and “Luna”. On these two tracks, strings are not simply added as background—they are woven into the composition itself. They actually become more magnetic than the melody and lyrics. Drummer Jimmy Chamberlain is flat-out excellent (listen to track #11!). Guitarist James Iha and bassist D’arcy Wretsky, however, are not even utilized on almost half of these tracks, on which those parts are performed by (you guessed it) Corgan himself. I suppose Iha and Wretsky were needed for live performances of these songs, however. It’s worth celebrating their humility in accepting such an arrangement. 4/5
4/5
I don't like alternative Rock and grunge, but this album - is exeption. Really great thing. The Best Composition - "Soma"
I was a Melon Collie guy in high school but this is probably closer to my favourite Pumpkins album. It has most of my favourites (Disarm, Today, Cherub) and really enjoyed Silverfuck too
Billy Corgan is a true guitar hero. He rips through this album with ferocity coming out of his fingertips. Even the more tender acoustic tracks feel at times like the guitar is under attack during the most emotional moments. And he sings with power and emotion. The whole band sounds great here, and the album rocks extremely hard.
I've forgotten how great this album is. Billy Corgan, mad genius that he is has pretty much spoiled all good will the Pumpkins earned. The 90s grunge sound is credited with being born in the PacNW. Chicago's Smashing Pumpkins expand that area with this album. 4.5/5
One of those bands that would be legends if they had a different singer. The album is still great though, closer. High 3, closer to 4 so that's why I'm rounding up.
Knew this album already – lovely emo softness
Si lo escucho otra vez le pongo 5*
Sick, first 2 tracks are proper 90s grunge, big fan. Always wanted to give these guys more of a listen/try so lookin forward to the rest of this one. Feels like a high3 so round up to a 4 so far. Yeh 4/5, enjoyed it.
I was sort of dreading this one because I absolute hate the vocalist's way of singing on the songs I've heard. Sure enough, the singing was pretty bad, but actually not nearly as bad as I had feared. To my even bigger surprise, the song writing, song structuring and instrumentation were fantastic. With a good singer, this could easily have been a 5. As is, it's a 3.5 for me. Rounded up because it surprised me so much.
Starts off with what I think to be their best song and maintains a level of good throughout.
Great
A very fine album muscular with memorable melodies. I like it a lot.
I had heard most of these before but it’s still a great album
Mayonaise wow
I enjoyed this album. Loved smashing pumpkins as a teen, but first time I listened to this full album. I liked “Soma” and “Geek USA” especially.
Great album that deserves a 5 but Billy is a douche canoe and his vocals can gnaw on you after a while. He has no range.
Very nice album, has some of the better songs from the Smashing Pumpkins
good energy, nice drums, interesting
I'm grumpy. Why is this cover art not the original cover art? Why do I care? I don't know. But I do. This is such a sentimental favorite that I'm blind to how long it goes and how drone-y and generic it gets in places. There are three to four great songs on this album, so maybe that's enough for me. I don't know. I'm hungry.
Luna and Soma are gorgeous pieces of music. This album is brilliant. 4.5.
Classic, almost metally sound at some points. Pretty good.
4.5 if I could. Obviously the couple big hits but the rest is just as good.
Reminded me how good this is. Not a duff track on it and they’re not afraid of a tune.
solid 4 stars. I enjoyed it and might listen to it again
Really good shit
I like this type of rock and I think that I just turned away from The Smashing Pumpkins in the past because I just did not know what to expect. But this album somehow makes me think that if I had been a teenager in 94, I would definitely have been feeling this while wearing flannel and doc martens and a cigarette in my mouth.
Today. Cherub rock. Brilliant album!
If only we had some kind of human 1001 album app that could have recommended this earlier.
Good album. Have listened to this many times.
actually liked this! the beginning of the album felt a lot more slow and repetitive, but as it went on i started liking it a lot more
The sound is very similar to Nirvana's. My initial thought was that the sound is a more user friendly mix of In Utero. (Both released the same year) To be sure, it's heavy and nobody would accuse it of being happy, but it was able to appeal to those not clinically depressed as well as those who own shirts that aren't plaid. One of the top LPs of the Alt Rock era.
Classic 90's grunge.
yes lad
Smashing pumpkins are cool
It was nice Monday driving music. I hadn’t heard all of the songs but I liked almost all of them.
Muy Smashing Pumpkins.
Absolutely great CD... I've seen them twice. Once at Lupo's in Providence and once at St Andrews theater in Detroit. At the end of the Detroit show, Billy Corgan went on at least a 20 minute guitar experimental solo. I say "at least" because most people left at some point because it was more noise than art at that point.
Classic Pumpkins. Great tracks are great. Others? Eh
the Wiki for this album is very interesting, I didn't realize that it was spawned from so much conflict, chaos, drug addition and talk of suicide. I also like Rolling Stone's description that its closer to progressive rock than punk or grunge
Can an album simultaneously be the best and worst thing to ever happen to a band? Maybe it was inevitable that Billy Corgan would turn into a bit of a douche commode or maybe he already was, but this record is where I’ve always drawn the line as a fan. It’s so good and I liked it soooo much. Still do. (Those guitar sounds! The first three tracks!) But man, I didn’t touch a thing they did after this. Still have never listened to that double album, which I know is supposed to be good but… I was just tired of all things Pumpkins by that point. They flew too close to the sun, man. It’s too bad.
This was on point with my Friday feelings. I particualrly enjoyed disarm. Belter.
Great album - I was a lot more familiar with it than I thought. Picking a fave track is hard. "Today" was popular at karaoke while I lived in Japan, so I've probably heard it more than all the other tracks and have a lot of affection for it. "Cherub Rock" is a fantastic album opener. Might opt for the wildly OTT melodrama of "Disarm" though!
Formative album for me. Listened to it many times in my teenage years. I think the Melon Collie and the Infinite sadness album is better overall, but this one has a raw angst that can’t be denied. Billy Corgan’s high screeching voice sounds like his guitar riffs at times (Bee Gees-esque)
I actually really enjoyed this one. Hummer is a cool song.
It definitely holds up... some exceptional songs and a surprisingly heavy sound. I think about Today as representative for Siamese Dream, but there are so many more aggressive songs.
Been a long time since I listened to this. This was so big at the time, really set the bar of what “alternative” could be. Harder rock or softer elegant pieces. The guitar pedals effects and drums mix/level just scream early mid 90s 4.5 stars, rounded to 5
Listened a couple weeks ago.
Love smashing pumpkins. Love 90s rock too.
dope sound
One of the best albums of the 90s! I enjoy the smashing pumpkins.
Solid album, very 90's rock and easy to listen to. 2-discs so long but never hated any songs or wanted any to go quicker. Apparently I know a lot of Smashing Pumpkins songs?
An absolute rock classic. This is the band's rawest LP by far, but the production makes every Muff-slathered guitar lead shine through. Tight riffs and tonal shifts make for a thrilling and varied album that remains fresh to this day.
A real blast from the past. Instantly transported to the summer of 1994 as a 15 year old hanging out with my mates, not a worry in the world and no idea what the future would hold. No need, it's so far away right‽
Possibly my favourite SP album, and considering some of the songs on Mellon Collie, that's pretty decent praise. Today and Cherub Rock are classics, Rocket still sounds great, and possibly the one song of the four singles I don't tire of, and Silverfuck is incredible. 4 stars as it does lose a little bit of momentum somewhere in the middle, but even that's a harsh critical comment.
Its that smash pumpkins rock
Enjoyable, but a handful of songs sound like other songs.
Old school hard rock
Good stuff
This album is a classic. Pretty much any latter-day GenX kid had it, or had a friend with it. Listening back, I can find seven or eight songs that have been on mixtapes of mine, and at least three that have been on recent playlists (within the past few years). Definitely a whole album worth listening to.
Really don’t enjoy Billy’s vocals, but that’s just me, I know. Still, great album.
3.5/5. Great, classic rock track! Haven't heard this in a long time
Sensational. Sleepy, dreamy and psychedelic. Almost a 5
Muitas faixas boas.
i like it altough mellon collie is to me a more interesting album because of its different facets while this one is good but more of the same
Cool guitar sound. producción tipo grunge. Ya había escuchado Today. Fluye bien. Mucho menos pulido que 1979
Cool album with some great songs
Honestly, I loved this. It wasn't a perfect 5 stars, but the sound and Billy Corgan's vocals are still excellent and I'd definitely listen again. Solid 4.
Nostalgia isn't the only thing carrying this record through, disarm, mayonaise and other great tracks, excellent
Really a touch of 2010's millennial on this album.
I enjoyed it.
Made me feel nostalgic. Was already familiar with Smashing Pumpkins but had never listened to a full album. I really liked the angst and longing and bittersweet feeling.
- Love the calmer parts with less distorted guitar sound - Distorted guitar parts sound kinda same across songs - Lead singer sounds like an acquired taste, maybe not for me - Disarm was my favorite from the album
Wasn’t too bad tbh
Good
I could never really get into the Pumpkins beyond the hits and I still feel that way. Not sure if it’s because I can’t get into Billy’s voice or what. Cherub Rock and Today are great tracks to be fair and Disarm has a killer riff.
They have three or four solid songs on the album, but then have songs where vocals are sad and/or you have minutes of empty noise on the song.
It’s ok
As a geriatric millennial this record brings up the hot button question who had a better day? Smashing Pumpkins or Ice Cube?
Oh hey smashing pumpkins I was unaware of your game
A version of me from over a decade ago would've been happy to find this gem, a little more angst in me and I could see myself repeating this. There's a lot of it I appreciate, Corgan's hazy half-falsetto vocal work pairs really well with the delicate strings and with the harsher "metal" moments. The musicianship overall is pretty great. It feels like a significantly more matured MCR, which is a mood I haven't been in... in probably over a decade. It's not dated, it actually sounds fresh, except maybe for the lengthy shoegazey power chords. I can't hate on anybody for loving this, it's just finding me at a time where I've outgrown the emotional necessity. 3.4/5
The boredom with this one is strong, and with added whiny Billy vocals. I'm not entirely sure how I got through it. Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ❌️ ★★★☆☆(5/10) Total reviewed : 402 Already owned : 90 Purchased : 21 To buy : 3 Nope : 288
Shoegazy, sometimes bombastic. Good album. Not sure why folks bag on this band. They're not bad.
Siamese Dream is a really solid album overall. I didn't love the opening track, "Cherub Rock"—it never really clicked with me, even after hearing the rest of the album. But once I got past that, there were a lot of songs I genuinely enjoyed. The album has a huge, layered guitar sound that's heavy without losing its melodic side. Songs like "Today," "Disarm," "Mayonaise," and "Rocket" stood out the most for me, each bringing something a little different while still fitting the album's dreamy, emotional atmosphere. Billy Corgan's vocals can take some getting used to, but they fit the music well. One thing I appreciated is how the album balances loud, distorted rock with quieter, more vulnerable moments. It feels ambitious without becoming exhausting, even though it's over an hour long. Some tracks blend together a bit, but the highs are strong enough to keep the album engaging. Overall, I liked Siamese Dream more than I expected. It has a distinctive sound that influenced a lot of alternative rock in the '90s, and it's easy to hear why it's considered one of the genre's classics. Even if the first song wasn't for me, there was plenty here that made the listen worthwhile.
Like. But not in my top 50 for sure
Dreamy indeed. I can’t really connect to the Smashing Pumpkins the way I feel like I should given how much I love similar bands. But I did think this album sounded l great, I appreciate it, and I believe that one day the conditions will be right for the Pumpkins to fully click with me. Right person, wrong time. 3.5 stars.
This is a decent album. While listening I felt it had some really strong moments, especially the heavy riffs and the powerful, layered instrumentals. Billy Corgan’s guitar work and the overall sound can be impressive and full of energy. That said, the album starts off a bit weak for me. The beginning doesn’t grab you right away, and some parts feel a little too long or repetitive. It has that big, alternative rock sound of the 90s, but it doesn’t always hit as hard as it tries to. Overall, Siamese Dream has its highlights and good production, but it’s not as consistent or exciting as I expected from all the praise it gets. It’s decent, but far from a must-listen for me.
Maybe maybe, but the grungy fuck: I am talented but don't want to show it
Other than a couple of tracks, this might as well be Coldplay. Just dull. Not horrible but average.
If you are they type that someone that looks like someone from Soundgarden might have stuffed into a locker, or if someone actually in Stone Temple Pilots stiffed you on the purchase of narcotics, Smashing Pumpkins offers recourse. Hard rock for delicates that won't trigger your metal allergies. "Today" is kind of a perfect indie rock song, if the genre allowed for superlatives, and "Disarm" is a legit moving power ballad. The rest feels like it is/was a soundtrack for a coming of age movie set in the 90s rather than about the times itself, which sums up the early 90s pretty well.
Even knowing that Billy Corgan is a complete walker, this record had some nice moments.
One of the albums of all time.
Pretty nice
It's...fine. Nothing is terrible, little is great.
Tää on leffaa bro.
Parhaimmillaan tosi hyvä, huonoimmillaan aivan jees. Disarm on musta yks ysärin hienoimpia biisejä, vaikka kuulostaakin aika paljon Antti Tuiskun Hyökyaallolta (tai just siksi?)
Primeira vez ouvindo o album. Conhecia o Mellon alguma coisa.
maybe i'm missing something but this goes on for too long and has some good moments but is largely kind of dull. maybe one to revisit.
07/12 Was okay. Prefer Melon Collie & The Infinite Sadness more
The singles (Disarm, Today, Cherub Rock) have stood the test of time and are fantastic. My only gripe is that the album is a little too long and gets repetitive, which I’ve noticed with all of Billy’s releases that I’ve listened to.
It's 3.5
It pains me not giving this a higher score, but this was quite underwhelming compared to "Mellon Collie". I listened to this album six times. Why so many times? Because I love their following release, and taking into account that they are both as highly regarded, I though I should also love this, and that's why I decided to be so persistent. Turns out, I can't. Every single time, I left with not much value out of it. The reason why I love "Mellon Collie" is because it is really ambitious, grandiose and full of super interesting and unique ideas that make almost every song distinct. All these things I like so much about it are not present in this one album. In "Siamese Dream", the songs are more similar to each other, not identical, but they do follow a very similar line and sound, so overall it doesn't come as bold or experimental as the next project. Okay, now it might seems that I dislike the album, but not at all. I do dig the very alternative rock sound that its also close to dream pop and shoegaze, combining some really nice and punchy guitars riffs with mellow and slow moments and also a big wall of sound brought by the very distorted guitars. I admit that I do like way more the frenetic side of the album. Songs like "Cherub Rock", "Quiet", "Geek U.S.A" and "Silverfuck" have some really amazing and hard hitting riffs which keep my feet and head moving. The other and slower side is great, but it never succees to capture me as much. There are a lot of beautiful, delicate and melancholic moments, thanks to the melodic guitars and use of orchestrated strings, and yet, I can not connect with them. Not even with songs like "Today" and "Mayonaise", which are both considered some of the bests songs they ever released. I do not think they are bad as I do appreciate their soft sound, is just that they do not spark any big emotion in me. In conclusion, maybe I'm a bit disappointed, but I still like their very unique alternative rock sound, despite not being their most ambitious.
Some absolute bangers and some over the top pish. Too long.
Pretty solid- nice mix of chill vibes + higher energy. I like the other-wordly feel.
I didn't really pay attention to Smashing Pumpkins, even when they were unavoidable for a while there, but this sounds great today. I miss guitars.
I'd forgotten how grunge-adjacent (but also stylistically varied!) the Smashing Pumpkins could be
(4/7) I think the singles are strong but the rest of this feels like someone wailing over a soup of distorted guitars
No es tanto de mi gusto. Pero debo decir que tienen buenas canciones.
I had never listened to The Smashing Pumpkins before listening to this, and even then, I had only heard of them within the past year or two. I actually thought a lot of this album was really good. It wasn't really my taste, but I appreciated the music nevertheless. There were obviously some that I wasn't really a fan of, but I think 'Disarm' really stood out to me. I don't really enjoy this heavier genre usually, but I love it when different styles get experimental and incorporate different ideas. The strings in this song were beautiful, and I really enjoyed it. The vocals throughout the whole album aren't really as heavy and 'rough' as you'd expect with this style of music, and I thought that the vocals were actually really nice from start to finish. I think that this is quite a lengthy album, which meant my attention wasn't always on form throughout. I think this was slightly too long for a top-to-bottom album listen, but overall, I thought the album was okay. Also, they spelt Mayonnaise wrong. Not on. Stand-outs: Disarm Hummer Mayonaise Today
Mostly don't get this - although Disarm is pretty good. For me at least it got better towards the end. The first few tracks made me think "this is like whiner Nirvana".
heck yeah man
I was surprised at how little the songwriting on this album spoke to me compared to Mellon Collie. I struggled to find a route into the record, whereas with the follow up, several songs immediately peaked my interest. The aesthetic is cool, I love the passion, but this will not be my go to smashing pumpkins record.
Not my cup of tea but I understand why it’s part of this list
Guess its an okay album. Maybe if i listened to it when it first came out my overall rate wouldve been higher. It has couple songs that i enjoyed like Mayonaise and Today but other not for me.
Cherub Rock is an all-time banger. The guitar riff will make the hair on your neck stand up. But look, I didn’t really like these guys when they were hot in the 90s and Billy Corgan has proven himself to be at least a relative of the guy I always kind of thought he was so…🤷♂️
Theyre definitely not for me. Every song feels the same and ım so bored. Maybe haf i given myself fully id think different but anyway its not the time :/
Not listened to much SP before. You can hear how influential a lot of this album is for future genres - especially things like pop/punk and rock. Guitar work is killer, Billy Corgan’s vocals are lacking especially in respect to other alt / grunge bands of the time. Lots to be admired on this. Soma and Luna standout tracks.
3/4 border. Had a bit of a Nirvana knockoff style but liked it well enough
Another one that I own, but haven't played for a long time. It was good to reacquaint myself with it before putting it away for another couple of decades.
i kept putting this off because i love the smashing pumpkins but i did have to be honest that only two tracks stood out to me from this album specifically
Pretty solid stuff here. Not an enormous fan of the voice, but I do think that it it fits the subject matter and music pretty well. It gets a little distorted for me here and there, but there are also some great riffs and nice melodies. 3.5
Not sure if I buy this being on a shortlist for greatest album ever but it goes hard and actually has a guitar-forward sound and actual guitar solos which appears to be unusual for the era. It's obviously a moody album but it doesn't sink into being a terrible listening experience which is a mistake a lot of American bands from this time seem to be making (see: Nine Inch Nails). Pain for the sake of pain means an auditory nightmare and that its time to take your meds; pain as a means to a greater end for your art means critical acclaim and $$$
Okay. Fine
Rlly cool. Gives massive male manipulator vibes tho
Kind of generic but enjoyable enough.
Yeah man, the 90s!! The guitars and drums are yummy but the voice... grating
I never really got The Smashing Pumpkins. There's some decent songs here but I'll probably never listen to this album by choice.
The base album is 4/5. It dragged on too long.
Didn't blow me away.
Like it
Starts with a fantastic banger and nice riffing, afterwards it sometimes lacks energy for the full album, especially in the voice. Still enjoyable!
Not a massive fan of his voice but like a few of their hits
3.5
If i was 10 years younger / in a different headspace i might be able to connect more to it - might give this another listen though
Another separating art from artist album for me. Billy Corgan has some really, really, really weird ideas and has been on Alex Jones' InfoWars program multiple times (all pre-$1.4 billion defamation trial, so I'll give him that at least, but Alex has always been an asshole). But I'm trying to ignore that for this purpose. One of the big issues I have with this album is that it contains Today and Disarm, both of which are, in my opinion, head and shoulders above anything else on the album. They are both genuinely great songs. The rest of the album, I can pretty much take or leave. Billy does objectively have a pretty odd voice, but it sort of suits a lot of this. The distorted guitar tone starts to get a bit much over the full album, as every song ends up sounding quite similar - someone needed to buy James Iha some different pedals. It's mostly a little bit dull with two absolute standouts. 3/5
i think its nice background noise when you're feeling in a i want to be calm but in a grungy way
Quintessential 90s grunge rock. The SP sound is evocative of the time and of the albums that follow this one.
A couple five star songs
I think this album is overrated. It mashes too many styles, sometimes in the same song. It sounds like walking through suburbia. I think it might take many repeat listens to grow on you. I do get the mood from the music though and it is cohesive. I wonder if you only had this CD, I think you would play it all the time driving around (if you lived in the suburbs) and I think it would come to signify a time in your life, and you would love it. I admire Billy Corgan's ambition. His voice is not that great but layered with these specific guitars, it does make a lovely noise.
it's good !
Pretty okay, the hit is really a hit but kinda drags
Some of my favorite songs are from the Pumpkins, but I never tried to listen to a whole album. So I was looking forward to this, but surprised to find that I REALLY dislike most of their songs. But when they get it right, they really do get it right! Disarm is a standout songs. Soma, Mayonnaise, and Spaceboy are also good.
It's been an age since I listened to this album. Admittedly my older sister was more of a fan of it than I was, but I spent a lot of time riding around in cars driven by her with music selections by her. Disarm, Today and Cherub Rock got a lot of radio play so those were more familiar to me than the rest of the album as I assume is the case with most. I think Disc One of Mellon Collie got more play. Anyhow, enough backstory. This sounded very much like Smashing Pumpkins to me. Their sound to me is as distinct as a fingerprint. I like that sound, generally. I don't go crazy for it, but it is good. The mix of Corrigan's vocals, Iha's guitar sound and Chamberlin's drums is a great mix. I'd put this into rotation again, get familiar with it again and revel in the nostalgia of being a passenger in a 1980s chevelle with a spray paint primer paint job in a cloud of Marlboro Light smoke wondering if I'll ever be as effortlessly cool as my sister. Spoiler, still trying to catch her.
I've heard a number of these songs before, but never really followed the Pumpkins. Perfectly good grunge, if nothing mindblowing; some very cool riffs (I liked "Geek U.S.A." a lot), though the vocals aren't as powerful as my personal grunge favorites. Good production, too, especially on the sinister "Silverfuck".
Some rocking numbers are kinda OK, but mellower ones are really annoying
No denying this album is a cornerstone of US alt rock. I love the guitar tone and wall of noise on the louder tracks (cherub rock, geek USA) but some of the quieter tracks drag a bit for me.
I particularly liked "Rocket", "Soma" and "Silverfuck". 3.5/5
A dream involving Siamese twins.
3,5
6/10 - just before my time but has some good indie rock songs, Disarm is a highlight
Chill rock
no es mi tipo pero me gusto 3/5
Great production and rocks hard. Nearly a great rock album. Just a pity about the vocals. They come close to ruining it. Overall just about a 3.
Forgot thy were cool
I’d heard the name The Smashing Pumpkins many times before, but this was probably my first time actually listening to their music. It’s a bit too heavy for my taste, although I don’t question that it’s a good album. It has several strong highlights. 6/10
I’m honestly not sure why, but I have never listened to the Smashing Pumpkins. I have heard a few of these songs over the years, and I’ve had a few people recommend them to me, but for some reason, I never found them intriguing enough to seek out. Having finally sat down and listened to Siamese Dream, it didn’t exactly blow me away. It's not bad, I don't dislike it, it’s a solid alternative album, and the guitar playing in particular was phenomenal, but Billy Corgan’s singing did start to get to me by the end. Again, it's not bad, it's just not something I really want to spend an entire album with and I don't foresee myself returning to this in the future.
Sounds like mcr and a summer evening
I confess a soft spot for the swing for the fences high drama of (some of) these songs. The thick deep guitar sound these guys get, coupled with the angsty catharsis they aim for, is pretty great. The album is too long, but calling the Pumpkins out for excess is missing the point.
This was my early 90s—I bought this cd at the Tower Records at 86th St in NY. It holds up okay—the better songs still boast an impressive guitar wall of sound and their hooks are intact. But the album needed an edit—some songs are pretty forgettable; indeed, I had forgotten them.
It's not my type of rock and i didn't like it so much but it has a few interesting songs
I liked this :D
Some generational songs on this record for sure - Cherub Rock, Today, Disarm. I had never heard Mayonaise before but apparently it's massive and those pinch harmonics at the start are sick (and kinda funny? lol). My first guitar teacher was obsessed with the Pumpkins, his fav band (named his son Corgan), and I definitely had a bit of a phase with them but few of their songs really hit me. Sick fuzz guitar tones all over the place which is sort of their signature thing (I think they have a signature Big Muff?). Billy Corgan's voice doesn't annoy me exactly, but after a whole album I felt a bit numbed. I listened to most of it on a run which was a pretty good environment. I just have a harder time connecting with this era of rock music, it's not old enough to feel seperated by time to me - it's just kinda what my sisters GenXer friends loved so my brain lumps it in with Pearl Jam. Not a bad album. Cool band name lol
I know this album gets a lot of hate but I still find it entertaining and is a solid c+
an album only a millennial could move
[small change after reslistening] Grunge is back on the menu boys. Heavy dark guitar riffs. "tortured" music has to walk the line between sounding insufferably whiny and cathartic. This record walks that line reasonably well and I can imagine many a teen in the 90's listening to this stuff on their way to school. It also helps that the singers voice, although high and nasaly not too much on the forefront. The mix is very clear in general. The drums and bass really jump out, which is in my experience pretty rare in this genre. It's kind of impressive that they have managed to get such a clear sound while still sounding grunge-y. It's good for a grunge record, but I don't like grunge. 7/10
Oh boy I’m right back in my college dorm.
Siamese Dream de The Smashing Pumpkins, sinceramente, no estuvo mal.
Okay mid 90s fare
Good, very 2000s indie. Nothing to write home about for me but good.
The soma
When you hear the good in this album it's borderline shocking. Starts out with one and Cherub Rock, but just like Melon Collie it drags (thank god not nearly as long). Guitar tone rules. Feels like a 4 but i think Billy Corgans creepy vibe drops a star.
Very simple disc, the disc is the most commercial
Meh. I don't worship at the altar of Billy Corgan. There are some decent songs on here, but Gish was their best work.
It didn’t really connect with me overall, I liked a couple of the songs but I wasn’t sold.
hadnt rly engaged w the smashing pumpkins prior but enjoyed more than i thought but not a ton
Eh
Not for me but I totally get it. Some amazing guitar playing and even through all the chaos and noise Corgan has an obvious ear for songwriting
Three stars because Billy Corgan is a total wanker
it all kinda sounds the same; some nice Guitar Hero nostalgia though
Muy rockero pero me gustó bastante
Good songs
Ok and at times a good album but for me some of the songs felt too long which holds it back from getting a 4/5.
Too vanilla for me. Not grunge enough, not Deftones enough, ... But a watered-down version of the two.
Music still holds up, love Cherub Rock but am not the biggest fan of the vocals.
This is not a band I have listened to much at all. I checked my last.fm stats - I’ve been scrobbling tracks as faithfully as possible since 2007 and I listened to more Smashing Pumpkins tracks today than I have in the preceding 18 years. Two tracks in 2016 followed by five pumpkinless years. A single pumpkin smashed in 2021, 2 in 2023, 1 in 2024, none last year, and now a whopping 13 tracks. It’s fine. Their heyday was my time in the musical desert - I didn’t like new music older was being released, it seemed like radio was garbage, and the internet wasn’t quite well-established enough to be a good route for discovery. All of this to say it was fine.
a classic but grunge is unf not my thing, may need another listen highlights: geek usa rating: 3/5
Some good guitar solos. Not bad but didn't really grab me as some rock albums do
Was initially not having fun but then the album sort of changed my mind so that’s a plus. Still unsure if the interesting stuff outweighs the uninteresting stuff - maybe worth another listen
Talented, yes. Enjoyable, yes. But why can I only take this band in small doses? Is it the over fuzzed guitars? The nasal whine? The repetitive formula of every song? Yes.
good but not my style
good
Not too shabby
Not terrible but also not my style. Grunge has never really vibed with me and this was no exception.
I’ve seen this album everywhere but only knew like one song from it, excited to hear more ! The guitar is SO GOOD. Fav song is ‘Today’.
Riffs yes vocals no
better than i expected!
Suprised that I didn’t like this more
Already have listened to this album
I can't lie, my heart was absolutely in my boots at the prospect of returning to whinging Billy Corgan and his artless dweebs, but actually I think this was basically OK I suppose. Not good, or enjoyable, but not totally without any worth at all. It is really odd to me that it's held up as a totem of alt-rock (whatever that means). It could not be more generic if it tried - overblown guitars, faux-intellectual lyrics and just no sense of fun whatsoever. I'm talking myself into lower marks here, but it can cling onto the lowest possible three.
At first I thought it was for me. Then decided it was not for me. But not for me in a not bad way.
Pleasantly surprised by this. A wall of scuzzy noise guitar but underneath some lovely melodies. Will revisit in the future as I think it is a grower.
Grungy, Alt rock
It was a classic. I’ve heard “today” so many times And I know all the words because of my dad
This is a slower style of Alternative that is less "punk" and not my favorite, but I see how this was pushing rock music forward at the time. Some good songs, but they blend together as there is a similar sound throughout the album.
