Standout: Mayonnaise
It is iconic 90's alt rock with the depth of Corgan's lyrics and skill at guitar shining at their brightest. The signature sound doesn't vary much and the tracks do begin to run together. Good emo vibe for an extended pity-party.
Disarm and Today are good. As I’m not into grungy and grungy riff rock the rest of the tracks are not so good 2.6
It's a cool album, but as with so many albums that are considered "normal rock" I miss something. I could also not stand that singer of the length of an album.
This was good. High 3*
Very nostalgic of that nineties emo, angsty teenage vibes. But not for me. But not bad!!
I'm disappointed to say this, thinking I was a fan of the Smashing Pumpkins after Mellon Collie, but I found this to just be alright. There isn't as much variety in this album, and it leads to a lot of songs that feel like the stereotypical image of "alternative rock" were it to be formed as one, singular album. There are great things here, stuff I already know, such as the hits which are stellar, but I felt much of the rest of the album often had a decent hook, but felt aimless by the end, or just feels like a lesser take on one of the singles from the album, and it makes it so I can't help but feel this project is bloated. On the bright side, again, those hits are fantastic, and the instrumentation is great, it just feels like its missing something that made Mellon Collie special. Perhaps I shouldn't be comparing them, but its hard not to, because this pales in comparison.
Cherub Rock - 7.5/10 Quiet - 8/10 Today - 9/10 Hummer - 8/10 Rocket - 7.5/10 Disarm - 9/10 Soma - 9/10 Geek U.S.A - 7.5/10 Mayonnaise - 10/10 Spaceboy - 7.5/10 Silverfuck - 7.5/10 Sweet Sweet- 7.5/10 Luna - 9/10 TOTAL - 87/140
I like Smashing Pumpkins, but for me, there's something lacking.
2.8
Billy Corgan's vocal style gets a little old after a while for me. Lots of really great guitar tones all over the record. Impressive how many big hits are on this record. Geek USA and Mayonaise were highlights I had not heard before. They definitely have their own sound. Solid listen overall.
Actually worse than I remember - I really like a lot of the songs I've always loved from this album, but I'm not sure it ties together the way I once thought it did when the sound was so unique.
Wenhui says it sounds like white noise
Deftones but less heavy
Bastante meh 💀
Pure herrie maar soms wel lekker
Guitar Hero 3! A lot of recognizable sounds and good songs.
Billy Corgan’s voice is like a double IPA. Abrasive at first and definitely an acquired taste, but once you’re about it, by god you’re about it. The album starts off loud and rock heavy but slows down by the end. And it keeps that classic Smashing Pumpkins grunge sound the whole time. ‘Cherub Rock’ and ‘Today’ take me right back to those Guitar Hero and Rock Band days in the late 2000s. ‘Disarm’ is another classic that will have me saying “the killer in me is the killer in you” all weekend. I want to give this a 4, but I don’t know that I can justify anything more than a 3.
A very unique sound. You always know when you're listening to Smashing Pumpkins. I feel like I should like them more, but every song sounds kinda the same. I don't know if that's a plus or a minus. There are three songs that I have heard before (Cherub Rock, Today, and Disarm) but I didn't realize they were all different songs. I thought Smashing Pumpkins was a one hit wonder. One of the longer albums we've heard so far. Over an hour long.
wasn’t my favorite but still a pretty solid album that has more good than bad
Very 90s garage rock grunge. Not a massive fan, i prefer pearl jam and nirvana, kinda monotonous
This album has great moments for me that are very fun to listen to, but also some shrieks from the overblown distortion and breathy, whispering vocals. I heard one of my favorite NY Crazy Horse songs the other day...Powder Finger. This album seems like some of the Crazy Horse stuff high on meth. I love grandpa grunge's melodies...but some of these songs are missing that feel and just seem like "noise". Wooly Bully...distorted lyrics drew people in. Here you have an album full of that and it gets tiring. However...I've always loved Today and will stop anytime I am channel surfing to listen to it. Also Disarm was a standout unlike the rest on this album...and kind of a breakthrough hit for them. Going with a solid 3 here...if Billy would just sing vs try to do whatever he does I would go 4.
Not a great fan of hard rock but I can imagine that for times to times it is nice to listen to Well, it's highly reverbed electric guitar, punchy drums, nice bass but I am not convinced Cherub rock : 6/10 Quiet : 6.5/10 Today : 5/10 feels like listening to cherub rock again Hummer : 5/10 Rocket : 5.5/10 disarm : 7.5/10 more progressive, less 'hard' => I like that Soma : 8/10 same as previous analysis Geek USA : 7.5/10 really like this mix of calm vocals and abrupt guitars Mayonaise : 8.5/10 nice guitar melody Spaceboy : 6/10 nothing special about that Silverfuck : An 8 minutes song is always special 8/10 sweet sweet : 5/10 luna : 6/10 Overall I liked it more than expected, especially after Disarm, but still won't listen to it casually. 3*
I don’t like this one as much as their first or their next but it’s solid. Some of the songs are better than I remember. Enjoyable as an album. Perfectly representative of Smashing Pumpkins.
I've never been a big fan of their sound even when it was new, and this is just waaaay too much of it.
I’ve heard this one! Listen to this sooo much in the 93-94, when I was in the Army. Remembered my favorite song would change daily Cherub Rock - still an amazing song, their best, nothing comes close. Maybe Drown, maybe. Quiet - a bit filler, good to listen to Today - better than I remember, aged well. Hummer - Rocket - Disarm - this song still sucks. Yet, it’s very entertaining for the horrific chorus. Soma - Geek USA - this aged better than I thought. Enjoyable. Mayonnaise - this was everyone’s favorite. Not quiet the great song I remember. A bit overwrought. Spaceboy - overly earnest. A bit goofy. Silverfuck - great riff. Oh man this is still great. Never figured it out for a revenge song. Wonder who Billy was angry with. Sweet sweet - definitely filler at the time. Something the grunge could get away with that metal couldn’t - the earnest ballad. Luna - my wife put this on a CD when we first met. I just put my head on her head and listen to this. This is a much better song then I first gave it credit for. I don’t remember being an album about a relationship (maybe a failed one? Is Billy Corgan even a sexual being?) but it’s obvious as an adult. Some items are very teenager-ish, trying to break away from something. I guess BC really was a business man.
Came into this one with some pre-conceived notions (probably based on hearing the same two singles every day of my childhood on the alternative rock station), and ya know what? Pleasant surprise. Not sure I’d like every thing they did, but this one is good. Radio station shoulda played some of these ones instead.
Not bad, a few decent songs, but probably don't need to listen to again. I can tell why this is on there, good grunge, 90s vibe.
I listened to half of the album. It was good but too hard rock for me.
Minha favorita do álbum.
An objectively great album, but like most 90's mainstream rock my ears just get tired of the sound quickly
Already know this one.
3.2/5 - The really good songs you probably already know. The only ok ones you will probably forget by tomorrow.
Smashing
Sounds to me like 13 songs in different boring interpretations.
Enjoyable listen. Quintessential grunge album. Would have appreciated more variation between songs however
This one feels culturally significant, but it’s just not for me
I mean, it was ok. There were a couple of good songs, but not an album I’d likely listen to on repeat. I enjoyed the energy and the feel, but I didn’t fully fall into the music. That being said it definitely wasn’t a bad album.
Not my vibe.
Alt rock not really my thing, but I was good with a few small doses of it.
Classic Chicago early 90s music!
good album. some songs take me back to middle school. don't love every song...
Never quite got them at the time. This is patchy and oh-so-affected in a whiney Morrissey way. Cherub Raock and Today do still stand out and hold very well.
Oh the 90s.
3 Stars (8/15)
This is pretty decent. I enjoyed the album but I leave 4+ stars to ones I want to listen to again. This one is close to 4 stars but there isn't anything enticing me to relisten. 3.5 stars
Very Angsty,
I love this album, the instrumentals are amazing and the composition of the hardness and softness of the music feels very intentional to me. Spaceboy is giving David Bowie. Cherub Rock - lovely guitar riff and 10/10 opening notes. Cannot discern the lyrics but the guitar after the 'let me out' slaps so hard. Very punk rock. Quiet - very angry song. so passive aggressive I'd say but very cool instrumentals. And that part when it builds up at around 2:02 is fucking amazing. Today - lovely opening. Was not expecting the drums to come in. This song goes in so many unexpected melodic directions. Love how the drums. suddenly go soft and then suddenly come in again. The singer says "Today is the greatest day" but does he mean it in a happy way or a sad way? Hummer - not a big fan of the opening static. But when the guitars and bass come in its fucking cool. The instrumentals seem so similar on all the songs at first listen. Beautiful towards 3:30. I love it when the song goes soft before "Ask yourself a question." Such a power move to end on the lyrics "Do you feel love is real?" Soma - absolutely beautiful. best on this album i think. Geek U.S.A. - kind of disappointing after Soma. All over the place. Silverfuck - First heard this song while wrapping a crepe bandage around my ankle and I felt like a god. Sweet Sweet - Something has changed inside me. I think. Luna - why is this so good. all of the soft songs on this album are fucking amazing. i don't know why people hate his voice. it's very on point with the era i think.
shoutout to billy corgan’s fit in the bands spotify profile pic, i want that gown oh man ! a classic album from my 14 yr old angsty dayz - it ain’t bad, i think in the right context it’s a beautiful album but it just doesn’t slap for me in that way these days ! Today is soooooooo classic grunge angst song omg i do love that - also shoutout to their song about connor, “spaceboy”! 3.5/5
better than i expected considering how much i dispise billy corrigan.
Much more heavy metal than I expected but still good, probably 3 1/2 stars
Carai, começo legalzinho já. Me senti na adolescência.
(Pesquisei, é do guitar hero E do rockband) 2.
# 104 : Good album, I like this, Not quiet the quality of a 4 star, so maybe a 3.5 star album? Favourite Track : Disarm Listened : 07/11/2023
Some really cool moments and songs, I liked it
Älskar Today sedan den kom. Hyggligt i övrigt.
Standard smashing pumpkins, didn't really stand out to me
Heard it before?: Yes Enjoy it?: it’s ok, definitely ahead of its time Favourite song: Track 1 - Cherub Rock
My problem with The Smashing Pumpkins is I aways get bored listening to them track after track. If I listened to two songs at a time, then something else, then came back, I’d probably like them a lot better. Their songs are great individually, but together it just gets a bit much for me. A but tried and tested. I was about 15 when I first heard this (from memory, Music Zone had it reduced to about 3quid, bargain), but a lot of the tracks I don’t remember. Guess thats a good thing. Felt fresh, if, like I said, it gets old quick. Probably prefer Mellon Collie BUT the songs that are better on here are better than on MC. Highlights: Rocket, Today, one of the other ones with a heavy fast fuzzy riff
Very decent album - along with The National, Smashing Pumpkins have been revealed to me by this list. It isn't as adventurous or soaring as Melon Collie, however. I would argue that most of the second half of the album, Soma onwards, is very dull. My favourite track is Disarm. 3 stars. Next!
Like the previous album we had "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness" I still don't like the voice of the singer. However the sound of the band is great. The heavy guitars and bass just hit right. Highlights: Cherub Rock Today Geek USA
Great album that has never stuck with me. Should be my thing, but it just isn't. Enjoy every song, but don't love any of them. Might click one day. *Heard before
Today Mid. Rock para escuchar pero no demasiado tiempo.
Good, but went on too long. At the end I was really done with it, could've dine with a little cutting.
There are some good ones but overall didn't vibe
Pretty standard alternative rock fare, really. It’s good enough to listen to, but nothing really separates it from the hundreds of other similar alt-rock albums released throughout history. A low to mid 3.
Ok didn’t love it. Some great songs though.
Not bad, not sure outside of a few songs I would list to whole album again.
Generic grunge droning. Lame lyrics. Mostly forgettable outside the hits.
It’s okay, not my favourite of theirs.
Not my cup of tea. Nice background music while I was driving, but the vocals were kind of boring and barely audible. Nothing I added to my playlist, but I would not skip it if it came on.
Rather generic sound. Not unpleasant, but didn’t find anything musically or perhaps melodically interesting. Didn’t finish album.
Very good record overall. Personally I think Billy Corgan's voice is great and I love the guitars in this. It has my favourite Smashing Pumpkins tracks, however I feel the record as a whole drags in places and I'd personally cut a few tracks from it.
Couple of things I liked.
A classic. Good for stormy weather.
Not what I'd usually listen to however not a bad listen overall
Superb musicianship. Can mostly just zone out to it. A couple of songs felt a little repetitive. Disarm is the standout for me.
Classic 90s album. A very good band to see it live.
Wou dat je halve sterren kon geven!!! Dit is echt een 2,5 ster album
I like the grunge instrumentation of Smashing Pumpkins, but have always found Corgan's vocals the weakest part of the band. Would be emotional tracks like Disarm lack a punch for me from his whiny tone. Maybe I'm missing out on good songwriting, but I inevitably feel I'd rather be listening to any other of their alt-rock or grunge contemporaries, from Alice in Chains to Cranberries.
Pretty okay, not a huge fan of bro's voice, he used to be a little boyyyyyy, sing quiet then get loud, his achy breaky sustained singing gets old
u jedno uhu unutra u drugo van
This seems so close to being an album that would jumpstart my love for this band and I would come back to again and again, but it's just missing that something for me. I recognize it's a solid album and there were definitely some standout songs, but just wasn't quite enough to grab me. Listening to this album did raise a problem for me though. I have been rating these albums based around a loose assumption that there will likely not be many (or any at all) albums in genres or from bands that I consistently listen to in my day to day. I feel as though I have skewed my ratings accordingly (giving a country album a 2 instead of an instant 1 for instance). But now that I have hit this album, I have judged it based more so on my enjoyment of the music from a "this could actually be something I listen to in my day to day" frame of reference. If I gave a generic country album a 2, certainly this album deserves a 4/5, but I want to give it a 3 because while I do enjoy the sound and the musicianship is solid, it isn't likely something I will revisit. I think in an ideal world, I would rate everything based solely on my enjoyment OR on my willingness to revisit the music, but I don't want to end up with hundreds of 1 star ratings. No real decision made, but giving this a 3 and reconsidering my previous/future ratings.
Yhdysvallat 1990-luku pop rock... ai sori... ''grunge''...
Great guitar sound and a few good bangas. Overstays its welcome a bit.
A réécouter
3. today, second half of 4. hummer, 7. soma, 13. luna: best, all the others mid
Starts off interesting, but falls off. I get why people love it, but it isn't for me.
Another 2.5 that rounds up to 3. I feel like Billy Corgan is someone who people either love or hate, but I can fall right in the middle. I am not sure this album ages well for anyone who didn't live this in the 90s.
Billy Corgan needs a good editor. Album starts really strong then just kinda fades & drags. So much so that at one point I asked “why are we listening to this song again?” It was the same song - the first time round. Still strong drumming and some fun noisy geetah.
Heard before: no This album is reinforcing my 90s phase I’m currently ripping through. Gave me some Nirvana vibes, and I really liked the sound they establish in this album. Fave song: Geek USA honorable mention: Today
Heard before: yes Billy Corgan will pummel you. Either with his 100 foot guitar sound, the driving grunge-metal beats, or the sheer volume of songs that he shoves in your face. The three singles rightfully stand head and shoulders above the rest of the album - they are pure sugary awesomeness - but I think there are a few gems hidden in side two also. There's just so much other stuff, it's exhausting. Top tracks: Cherub Rock, Disarm, Today
I ended up getting a bit bored with this - which was my experience with the even longer follow up album that I've already come across on this list. This time was better, and I even knew one of the tunes - Today must have been on a Rock Band version of some kind (maybe the Lego one?). So, yeah, it's all OK I suppose. Just abut 3 stars as I didn't dislike it as such.
Band is ok and the album is fine. All the guitar is the same lo-fi sound so it all sounds similar.
If I was Matt Damon I would vibe to this
There is a great band here, unfortunately it's dominated by Billy corgan and I really don't think he can sing. It's whiney and drones on in all the wrong ways.
3.5 but I gotta pick one and I wasn't feeling it today.
It was alright like
Not bad
It’s better than I remember it from my first listen back in the 90s, but to my ears it’s a bit self-important. I like my gloom, but find this a bit too heart-on-sleeve. Probably just my repressed, Brit mentality, but it means this is (to me) worthy rather than particularly affecting.
nice riffs, very angsty, I would've definitely jammed very hard to this if I were a teen in the 90's. or a teen in general.. alas I ain't
better than i was expecting! overall what i imagined the smashing pumpkins to sound like but some good songs in there
It was good, I guess.
It's ok, but I don't understand the very high score, it's not so interesting after all
My mind likes it but then the vocals kick in and 90% of the time it’s just… ugh.

This album does really shine at certain points, but for a lot of the time I spent listening to it, I just wanted it to be over so I could listen to something better... Many songs blended together, and Corgan's voice is well, not great.
Better than I expected, enjoyable but don't really like BillY Corgan's voice unfortunately. Fav Tracks: Today, Disarm, Mayonaise
The music here is OK, good actually. Some of it actually rocks pretty hard - Geek U.S.A. being a good example of this. However, I don't like the vocals very much - they are "creepy" sounding, for lack of a better word. I always had fun drumming to Cherub Rock on the game Rock Band.
I need to get more familiar with them
Starts off well, bit too grungy second half
I don’t have a lot to say for this one. Was definitely way better than mellon collie. This is the smashing pumpkins i know and love. The embodiment of late 90s early 2000s rock. was kind of interesting to see how their sound changed between the two albums.
Siamese Dream is the second album by American alternative rock band the Smashing Pumpkins. Critically acclaimed and released to commercial success, this album is considered one of the best alt rock albums of all time. It debuted at number 10 on the Billboard 200 and has been certified 4x platinum. The recording of Siamese Dream was fraught with problems and went over budget and behind schedule, so it was a surprise to the label when the record was finally completed. This album was a beautiful twist on rock music because it contains both harsh and sweet parts in its music. It has a little something for everybody, but overall it's just great alt rock music. One of the best grungy albums I've ever listened to.
Light 7/10
Somehow I thought this band was from the mid 2000s my bad 2.5/5
+1 for being an iconic sound of my teenage years. -1 because I still can't stand Billy Corgan's voice.
Solid 90’s alt rock.
It was good but not great. Brought back those 90’d memories.
Yeah it's alright, but grunge just didn't age very well in general, people have to start to admit it.
I can understand why this as become a classic, but not for me.
Definitely, I have a problem with my ability to like this band. This album wasn't bad, but I felt nothing while listening to it. Maybe their sound didn't aged so much well? Anyway, I'll give a 3 stars in proof of my good will, but can't do more.
Cat: this is a really great album. Just really like their sound. I love how they can go from beautiful to grunge rock to power ballad. I get a little tired of Billy Corgan for a full hour, but the music is so good AJ: the most alternative album I’ve ever heard. Whatever that means. Need to listen with liner notes. No idea what any of the songs were about. It’s good rock and roll, though. Agree on Billy’s voice. Wicked good in some songs though. Today i learned the name of that song is Disarm.
90s alt rock, seems standard. Didn’t finish. 3/5
Da e nåken goinga her
I know it's supposed to be one of the "finest alt-rock albums of all time" but it doesn't do much for me. I don't like Billy's whiny voice and not a big fan of the inorganic wall of guitar sound. I do like some of the songs and the use of strings. It's okay, just not that great. 3 stars.
The Smashing Pumpkins, whilst overall a great band, I couldn't help but feel that this album was a little lacking. It didn't grab me in the way I expected it to as other similar albums of the era have. Don't get me wrong I thought it still was a good listen, just not great. Best: Cherub Rock Worst: Sweet Sweet 3.5 Stars
Rating: 6/10 Good grunge/rock album, only a few songs I’d listen to again, not too much for me.
as good as mayo 3.9
Very nice debut. Mostly likeable with two great tracks. Not bad.
stark, kannsch nix sage
3.5 would be my true rating. some great pop sensibilities, covered by the "90's noise". great lyrical content. amazing energy.
Some really good songs (Geek U.S.A and Mayonaise) but I really can't stand Corgans voice.
This one I've probably downgraded over time. Drums and guitars still sound awesome but the lyrics and vocals are very very teenage
not bad but not my thing kinda boring alternative rock inoffensive
i listened to this album quite a few times in the hope that i would love this, but i only like it. it's far from bad. the drums, bass, and guitar are all well done. some of these riffs or solos!? damn. the vocals didn't impress me as much. the music itself seemed to drown out the vocals. i guess that's grunge? so the vocals weren't bad necessarily but i wish more emphasis was on them. but despite my non-preference for billy corgan's voice, he is a great lyricist. there's a personal touch within these lyrics, and corgan laid himself bare for the sake of these songs. all in all, the album is just okay. the vocals soured me some but i can appreciate other aspects.
Hadn’t heard this before (grunge tended to pass me by), but it grew on me. Splendid production too, as bass heavy as you would expect.
I’m with Rory Gilmore on this one. Not really for me. Fav songs: Luna (the only one I liked enough to save), Mayonaise, Today, Spaceboy, Disarm, Silverfuck
Always thought this band was overrated and still do. Corrigan's voice and general persona in particular I can do without. The music is good and well performed but I don't think that interesting or innovative.
Ok, some songs are good, but I still don't understand the general admiration
Since we already listened to the five-and-a-half hour long Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness that came out two years after this album, which I would argue is their great opus, and because this didn't have much else to say that that album didn't, I felt that this was not a necessary addition to this list. It was certainly another nice representation of the band's work, containing a couple of their worthy hits. But I'm just not sure why this takes the place of other artists I haven't heard in over 500 albums so far.
Just not a Smashing Pumpkins fan, I guess. A track or two sprinkled into a mix is probably a better fit for me and I could really appreciate them, but an entire album just doesn't appeal.
In my review for Melon Collie and the Infinite Sadness I said, "I remember kind of disliking them in the 90s. Based on what? I do not know." There was so much of MC&tIS that I enjoyed that I was kind of looking forward to hearing more from these Pumpkins. Cherub Rock validated my feelings that I had really missed out back in the 90s --- man, that song is an absolute peach! The rest of the album did not nearly agree with my earholes as well as that one, including the singles Today and Disarm, which might have been what put me off the band in the first place. And I found that by the end of the album (half as long as MC&tIS but still over an hour), I'd grown quite tired of their schtick. Still though, Cherub Rock, you guys.
Note a hugeee fan of this type of 90's rock. Its just hits me as very American. Thats hard to listen to at work. I just cannot today. Almost called it quits and slapped with a 2. I need to be more resilient. Hated quiet, twas not quiet. Fuck its that heavy electric guitar I hate. Don't enjoy the vocals either. Man this really sums up my distaste for this kinda genre. Ok it got a bit better towards the end, or I got used to it. Dont think I could ever listen to this album just like that, but could enjoy tracks. like a 2.6 out of 10.
I was so set to initially give this a 2 because holy Jesus I was fighting for my life there at the start. But thank goodness, because the turning point was at Disarm when those strings and those bells slapped me dumb across the face, which is what characterized Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness so distinguishably for me (I'm fully aware it came after Siamese Dream, my point still stands regardless). And I'm happy they began hitting on every emotion, because Soma and Spaceboy were fantastically modest yet intense simultaneously, and Greek U.S.A just went hard. Based only on the latter 2/3 of the album, this would be at least a 4, no question. But I have to go down one because they blew it in the beginning.
Ya know I had to listen to this a few times because I never really could tell what to give it. A two? A three? A four maybe? I tend to like this genre, but for some reason this album was not speaking to me. Most of the songs did not stand out to me, but I enjoyed the album nonetheless. I can’t really explain this rating. The album was good not great, and didn’t tickle the senses as much as I would have hoped.
The first time I heard The Smashing Pumpkins as a teen I thought I’d heard the most obnoxious voice of all time, it felt so forced. I’ve procrastinated listening to the band ever since, with the exception of a few songs here and there. One of my best thrifting finds was a ‘94 Smashing Pumpkins tee in near dead stock condition, I nearly creamed my jeans you should’ve seen the look on the Salvation Army employees face as I lost near all fine motor skills and fell in a pile of my own drool and cum, so this only feels right to finally listen. First listen thru I felt the same, but after 2 and 3 I’ve changed my mind. Overall I liked the album, and I like the band’s sound, BUT I don’t like the super punk rock songs (which is a lot of em Ik Ik), songs like Space Boy and Luna hit every time though, I also really liked Hummer and Today. Solid 3/5, gonna take a deeper dive into their music.
Noisy 90's grunge rock that really isn't my thing. Probably deserves another listen but only in the right setting.
Hadn't heard the entire thing before. Liked it.
Anders nummers laten me volledig inkakken. Ik middel het uit naar drie sterren.
Very pleasant first listen, great hard rock/grunge sound with dreamy textures/interludes, can see it growing to a 4 on second listen!!
Yeah this rips! Not a lot of absolute amazing songs but no real misses either. couple songs drag a bit. best tracks: cherub rock, soma, Luna
Deeper cuts sounded similar to each other, not just in a sonic way but I'd feel they may be too similar. Silverfuck is a solid jam track. Some of the 5+ minute tracks tend to drag. 6/10.
I was familiar with some of the songs. The album is entirely too long. Several of the songs carry on way too long. I don't care for the lead singer's voice. The songs themselves are ok but very unlikely that I revisit the album. I will roundup to a 3
Rating: 6/10 Best songs: Quiet
You can see greatness from here like you can see Versailles from the bins.
more smushing than smashing I would say
Fine, better than the other one. Teenage, whiney, some edge but generally not for me.
i used to play the Melon Collie…. Album a lot in the 90s. I didn’t have this particular album, but I remember loving some of the songs – Today, Soma, and Disarm has a haunting quality that still touches me after all these years. It’s suitably disarming. But the rest of it is a bit samey and I don’t feel it like I used to. Am I too old or ‘clean’ for grunge now? It definitely feels ‘of an era’ that I remember and am fond of but don’t feel the need to revisit.
I like this record! Best Smashing Pumpkins album for my money. So much more immediacy, urgency, and raw sound than anything on that Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness (there's only so much Billy Corgan I can take, and any double LP by the Smashing Pumpkins is simply too much Billy Corgan). Grunge is frequently paralleled with Shoegaze, but no other artist intertwined the two sub-genres so well as Smashing Pumpkins did here. At least not without sacrificing any pop sensibility. As a standalone record, this isn't really a great record, though. There are a lot of stinkers and I only really like about half the songs. But those that I like, I really like. Some are my favorite Shoegaze tracks of all time ("Mayonaise") and others are just great 1990s grunge-pop nostalgia vehicles ("Cherub Rock," "Today," "Disarm"). I return to this album more frequently than I care to admit. And it's really for more helpings of "Mayonaise.” But I'll stick around for the nostalgia vehicles, admire the album art, wonder about B. Corgan’s deal, and skim through the rest. (Side note: Odd that they would have the 2011 reissue album cover here...🤔.) Even the songs I don't care for—mostly the heavier, less pop-inclined cuts—are pretty amazing for their production alone. I find the overdubbing and layering used on this album, particularly of the guitar parts, to be really powerful. Like "Soma," which reportedly has over 40 different guitar parts all laid down on analogue tape. As for the lyrics and vocal work, well I mostly block that out when I listen to this album as, again, Corgan bugs me. I just find him a bit cloying when he’s being sweet and a bit screech-y when he’s being loud. And a bit pretentious overall. Somewhere between a Rivers Cuomo and Kurt Cobain of that era; but most like a Rivers Cuomo trying desparately to be a Kurt Cobain which is not particularly flatterring at all.
I think I've been grading these albums on a really generous curve, so I'm going to start being a bit more critical from here. This album sucks! Just kidding. I liked it. But mostly only for those thick juicy guitar tones. It was interesting comparing my listening experience with this one versus Jane's Addiction; I don't know why I just feel like I related with the youthful outpouring of Jane's Addiction more than the grungy head bob of Smashing Pumpkins. I just felt like there was more quirk in JA's music, even if they misstepped sometimes. SP feels a lot safer, but it's possible (likely) that they're one of those bands that inspired a lot of copycats, which would make their music sound less exciting to someone who heard the bands that they influenced before hearing them. I could have done without the orchestral treatment in "Disarm". I also kind of felt let down by "Soma", the intro had so much promise but I kind of tuned out by the end, even with the big glow-up halfway through. I did really enjoy "Mayonaise" and "Silverfuck"; in fact I enjoyed the last third of the album a lot more than the first two. The later songs felt more dynamic, more daring and energetic to me. My favorite moment of the whole album was the whole section in "Silverfuck" from that big trippy dominant chord that comes in at 4:19 through the unbelievable thrash of a jam at the end. Those screaming grunge guitars and bounding crashing drums feel incredibly well-earned after the long spacey breakdown. I also really liked "Luna", it felt like a concentrated version of all the things I like about SP. As a whole, Siamese Dream is a really nice album to have on in the background, but until that bit towards the end, I found it hard to sit down and actively listen to. After each attempt to do so my ears kind of just glazed over after and I thought "Yeah, this is nice. The guitars sound great." I think this album could have been an album of guitar-driven instrumentals and not much would have been lost. Again, some really nice tracks towards the end! But in general, not what I'd reach for.
Freaking tough transition going from listening to ABBA all day to this. Definitely not in the right frame of mind and wanting some pop schmaltz, but regardless I still think I'd find a lot of these songs kind of lacking and treading into some real unseasoned pumpkin GOULASH. A couple listens in and I'm appreciating the vocals and guitar work on several tracks. Disarm is powerful. What a monster of a song. Love those bells. They are a masterful touch.
Unpopular opinion, but I always thought that Billy Corgan's kind of a horrible lead singer. He's got that "yelling, but also trying to not wake your mom up" voice going on. Also he's an asshole but that's neither here nor there. The big songs like "Cherub Rock" and "Disarm" are great, but there's also a lot of bloat (but I guess that's part of the Pumpkins brand, ain't that right Mellon Collie). I like how shoegazey the production is. Works very well with the fact that Corgan should have his microphone taken away from him.
7/10
Good pumpkins hits, filler too. 3.5
Some good songs but Billy Corgan’s voice gets annoying after awhile.
I like the music as a whole. The guitar is really cool and obviously very innovative. It's just.... Corgan's vocals are too whiny. It's why I never got into the Smashing Pumpkins in the first place. I will grant Corgan for the line in "Bullet With Butterfly Wings" : "Despite all my rage, I am still just a rat in cage." That is a great lyric. The kid listens to "Zero" all the time. So I dug it as long as I could get past the vocals, but that's kinda difficult. It's weird because whiny vocalists like Neil Young I get in to, but Corgan? Just... he sounds like one of those angsty emo teens who needs STFU and stop whining about EVERYTHING.
Some very iconic songs - I mostly love the intros and then there’s a lot of whining.
I'm not a fan of the SP. Corgans nasal vocals annoy me and the swooshy guitar sound isn't to my tastes. There are a couple of strong songs ...and some of the melodies are great but..I struggle. 3
Compared with Mellon Collie, I found even more to like in the songwriting, tones and textures of this album. And for some reason, I found Corgan's voice much less irritating here, so I could enjoy those things without being totally distracted. I think there's more of his softer singing here (than the really strident nasal belting on much of Mellon Collie), maybe it's different recording mixing techniques, maybe it's just my increasing familiarity; I haven't done a back to back comparison to check. But I might even come back for another listen to this one, so 3.5 stars.
I did not know this record at all. I did not find it as interesting as Melon Collie etc. I liked Cherub Rock, Disarm & Mayonaise. And I really enjoyed Silverfuck - definitely could have been a late 60’s drug-induced marathon. They were good, but I find this album to be a bit samey.
I liked it but a good 30% was clearly fillers
Singles: --------------------------------------- Cherub Rock (#7 US Alt, #31 UK) Today (#4 US Alt, UK #44) Disarm (#8 US Alt, UK #11) Rocket (#28 US Mainstream Rock, #89 UK) Standouts: Today, Others: Cherub Rock, Rocket, Disarm, Luna
pretty chill 2.75 no top of the line songs but over-all is gud
I just can’t get over his terrible voice. Things surrounding it sound good though.
Enjoyed: yes Listens: 2 Didn't really enjoy it on my first listen through a speaker. My second try with earphones really helped the experience. Everything felt very tight and calculated. Will defo go back to this at some point
Mediocre Rock album. Well done Smashing Pumpkins. You smashed it!!!
Would like a bit more growl in that grunge! Enjoyed Rocket, Geek U.S.A. I'm wondering if this could be an album I enjoy more with further listens....but....there are other grunge albums I'd be going to should I be in that mood.
Ok
a few good (popular) songs
Smashing pumpkins - some songs very good, some just awful
I liked Disarm because it's sweeter than the other songs, we hear the voice clearlier than others, which I prefer. Finally, that's when the "Rock" type is too strongly expressed that it's too much for me.
This was blandest of the bland. Looking at some of the reviews here it seems like you had to be there to get this. Now 30 years later, it just sounds like one similar song and nothing very special. Could easy cut out about 20 minutes from this thing and lose absolutely nothing.
I knew the popular ones here and generally liked the album. By the end I was a little tired of it though.
Good album. Really highlights the indie rock of the early 90s sound. Would skip the second album.
Some good songs, good elements, a lot of songs were too similar for me and the lyrics were hard to hear and the same throughout
Modern listening experience on this one. Started with an MP3 at my computer (through external speakers), continued listening to a CD in my bedroom, finished the album streaming Spotify in my car. Without question, it sounded best on the CD, but that patented mid-range buzzsaw guitar came through in every medium. Found I enjoyed the album more than I expected I would. While I own this on CD, I always preferred Mellon Collie back in the day, so now I'm going to go back and listen to that front to back to compare. Nice blend of dynamics on this, though mostly defined by the angst-fueled signature wail of Billy Corgan — vocally and musically. I appreciated Jimmy Chamberlin's drums more than ever on this listen. At the end of the day, I find myself losing the thread of the song with The Smashing Pumpkins — it's more of a vibe than a collection of songs to me on this album. I remember moments, and a couple of standout tunes, but ultimately, three stars because I don't expect to keep going back to listen to the album. Sidenote: I once stood next to Billy Corgan at a concert in NYC, Ric Ocasik's solo band — dude is tall!
The first three songs are still thrilling. “Quiet” sounds like it could have been a Sabbath tune. I also dig “Soma.” The rest kind of bored me now, like so much of 90s alt-rock. Although his guitar tone is killer
I remember when this album came out. Loved "Today" even though it was overplayed on the radio. Listening now I'm finding Billy Corgan's voice monotonous and hard to understand his lyrics. I value this album for its indie influence and hold this band close in my heart but the album doesn't do it for me like it used to.
Although I won't be adding any of these tracks to my playlists – not quite my type of listening – I have to admit that I enjoyed this album, even without trying to frame it against its own genre. True, there are better bands in this space, but a band doesn't have to be great to be good. I felt the instrumentation was good in a classic sense, and the themes were constant, if not the "best".
Decent album
For liking nirvana and similar grungey music, actually wasn’t a huge fan. Mostly vocals, I liked the instrumentals a lot
It's a fine listen but it doesn't do much for me. "Cherub Rock", "Mayonnaise" and "Today" are all good, but I have never found The Smashing Pumpkins' sound to be anything better than just good (Besides "1979" which is amazing, but not on this album). Favorite Song: Today
Awesome album by the smashing pumpkins. Several classic hits on this album. It’s not as long as Mellon Collie but still rocks sufficiently. The album shows the prog rock style that makes them great instrumentally. Billy Corgan has a unique voice and singing style that makes this album different and the smashing pumpkins a solid band. 7.5/10
Really like "Disarm" the rest is ok but forgettable and sums up what I disliked about the 90s mainstream.
Lacking the special massive qualities that I liked in Mellon Collie, and layering on the parts that I don't like as much, which makes sense for a debut. They had growing to do.
Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness is better.
There are some tunes on this but if I was to be critical, its sort the poster child for rock albums seeming about samey
Good, not great.
I know this band when they make a concert in Barcelona with Bon Jovi, Van Halen and The Pretenders. I speak when the begining of the 90s. I went to see The Pretenders and I with a pack I saw the others. I liked these concerts but now it has changed much all.
Smashing Pumpkins always slightly annoyed me. I mean, it was fine then, it is fine now. I guess. "Today" is certainly an all time classic. Takes the album from 2.5 to 3.5 stars.
Muy shoegazey
Instrumentals are great throughout, the guitar is present in a good way. The vocals weird me out a bit at times but not too badly. I think it's among the better 90s music I've heard so far
I knew Today and, surprisingly, Disarm. I think I liked those? Overall not bad but wouldn't put it on again soon.
I don't care for the smashing pumpkins. Billy Corgan sounds like a moped that's struggling up a hill. The album is pretty classic early 90s rock. I like this album even though the vocals are distracting.
svona lala
I liked that there is a song called Silverfuck.
A few excellent tracks but a bit long. It would be a 4 if I thought I would go back to it more. Cover art: 3/5
somewhere between Yo La Tengo and Nirvana - ok but think this ship has sailed
Identifying Smashing Pumpkins : It’s Smashing Pumpkins
Grew on my as I went. I didn't realize I knew so many Smashing Pumpkins songs. Not really for me, but the quality and lasting cultural impact of these tracks is enough to bump it from a 2 to a 3.
Loads better than I remember.
Not bad. Started strong but the last few songs dragged a bit. Hadn't listened to this album before but am definitely a fan of other SP releases.
I think I’ll need to give this album another listen at some point. The songs are quite nice, and the lyrics are very positive and optimistic. My complaint is that so many of the songs sound very similar, but I’m hoping with more listens that I can hear the differences. 6/10
Done good tracks. Rest patchy.
Had this on tape as a 15 year old - never hugely grabbed me then. I think I prefer it now, but not likely to listen to it again. Great, thick, heavy guitar sound.
It's pretty decent I guess. 6/10
It's OK - an album and artist that was in the ecosystem but which I never felt the need to engage with
3/5
not really my type of music but def see the appeal
It's ok
Far more listenable than I had initially envisioned. Some of the tracks are quite mellow and enjoyable, others not so much. Wouldn’t necessarily listen to it again but I did enjoy it
Very stylistically diverse album. You'll find everything here, from more ethereal dream pop to effect dense shoegaze and heavier grunge. Which might be the reason this album has garnered quite a bit of mainstream success as opposed to more pure shoegaze records.
I don't rank Smashing Pumpkins as low as Foo Fighters or RHCP when it comes to arbitrarily beloved but overplayed and overrated 90s bands that have made this list, but they're in that category. This album holds up a bit better than the overlong, overblown Mellon Collie and its headache-inducing compression, but it's still just kind of... meh. A sacred cow of 90s alt rock that really should be skewered and laid to rest. Just because something's popular doesn't mean it's great - the Pumpkins sit in this weird spot in between the grunge scene, shoegaze, and the slightly gothy industrial rock of NIN and Manson, making them a bit of a lowest common denominator of 90s alternative rock. Maybe the should have committed more to a distinctive sound that didn't rely on Billy Corgan's signature nasal delivery?
Some good ones. Good nostalgia.
I don't know. Although it's definitely my type of music, I was never too fond of the smashing pumpkins. Don't hate it, but don't love it either. 3/5
The combination of drums, lyrics and guitar was just perfect.
I owned this tape and I listened to it too much. I saw the Smashing Pumpkins live and had a t-shirt. It inspired an older man who wanted to talk to me about Sartre. But here's the thing - the first half (side A) of Siamese Dream is decent, but everything after the tape flip is not as good. Also, while "Soma" is the best song, the best version of it is when the band played it live and Darcy sang the "close ur eyes and sleep" part, rather than Corgan doing his own backing on the album version. nearly 30 years on, I can't relate to the lyrical topics anymore, the teen drama seems best left in the 90s. It's a good album but I don't need it anymore.
3.25
I had a Siamese dream once. 2 vaginas quite the treat. Not to forget there was 4 tits. Like total recall but with an extra tit. Basically I masturbated while watching total recall and it got a bit weird.
The Pumpkins have largely passed me by over the years. I'm not even that familiar with the hits; It took me two tracks before I hooked onto the tune of Today. And now in quantity the appeal of the music is more obvious: There's a balance of styles, noisy and poppy not by turns but together. I have too much of a bias against the hint of grunge to fully love the record, but as it explodes into Silverfuck I appreciate the musicality. If I can trick myself into hearing the vocal affect as the legacy of hard rock I may be able to fully enjoy the band.
Solid album with some good hits. But the sound of it gets pretty repetitive after a while. I enjoy the vibe that it has, but it relies on that vibe a bit too heavily.
Mijn favoriet is "Today". ***
Also wasnt wild about this despite the fact that its such a cult favorite. Maybe next time...
Often overshadowed by Mellon Collie, Pumpkins 2nd album is a great listen.
This is an album I have pretty mixed feelings on. Cherub Rock is a great song, and there are a few others in there as well. It's a bit too long overall, but still nowhere near as bad as Mellon Collie (which is like 2 hours haha). On the flipside, some of it heads into that shoegazey, alt-rock territory that I don't really like. Corgan's alright when he sounds angry, but when he sounds whiny it's pretty grating. The guitar tone has no meat to it, which matches his voice well - but again, small doses. It's also a real good bit of evidence that the term "grunge" made absolutely no fuckin' sense. It sounds almost nothing like Nirvana or Mudhoney or Soundgarden or Pearl Jam (and none of them really sounded alike either). This has more in common with My Bloody Valentine than Alice in Chains. I listen to a couple of songs from this in other playlists anyway, but I don't think I'd do the full album again. As a whole it doesn't have enough oomph. Still, 3/5.
Smashing pumpkins is one of those bands that on paper I should love - alternative grunge with thoughtful lyrics and creative song writing. But honestly I just haven’t gotten into them, other than the flagship songs. Although I prefer Mellon Collie to Siamese Dream probably because the former had more energy
Not heard this album before, enjoyed it but not one I'll go back to 3
Solid production, but not quite for me. Don't think I've ever listened through a full album of theirs, and it just doesn't resonate.
As far as 90s alt rock bands go, I like the sound of Smashing Pumpkins better than many others (ie., Nirvana, STP). Still, I can't help wishing that their albums showed more range. Aside from the couple of hits on this album, much of the rest of the songs sound largely the same, and much the same as the weaker songs on MC&TIS. That said, Billy Corgan is in great voice on these tracks and the band is tight behind him. Taking the best of these songs and playing them with the best of MC&TIS makes for a damn fine "album" of 90s angst rock, and I'd more likely take that approach than to listen to either album in their entirety.
We already listened to Melancholy and the Infinite Sadness and this album is not as good. It’s less polished. More sloppy. For instance, the guitar solos in Quiet and Geek U.S.A. feel overindulgent. I do like the rocking’ guitar on Geek U.S.A. Cherub Rock is good. As is Today. Then again, I could do without Mayonaise and Spaceboy. It’s a mixed bag for me.
3/5 okeyish, but not after all
Strong first half of the album, back half leaves something to be desired.
Great "Sloging" riffs. Found them way more listenable the older I get. Very DIY sounding. Overall an enjoyable, "headbanger" album if you're in the mood.
There's some really good songs on this album (Cherub Rock, Today, Disarm) but overall it's pretty boring. 3.5 stars.
I'm just not a huge fan of Smashing Pumpkins. It's a whiny kind of 90s which, admittedly, does have some good stuff to it (Disarm is a nice song). So, this counts as more of a midrange album.
Decent album, runs a bit too long and slows down a bit in the second half.
Good stuff.
The grunge scene was a little before my time, and I could never really get into it. Having said that, this was listenable, and I can appreciate the craft.
angsty teen rock from the 90s
Better than expected, quite heavy. Little boring
Solid 90s grunge, a professional, less fru-fru, more down to earth Nirvana.
This one didn't stick with me much on the first listen. I'll have to give it another listen later.
Okay, so now I've listened to both albums by The Smashing Pumpkins, and this one is better than the other. There are more songs that I vibe with and I think that I may actually revisit after. My favourite is Spaceboy.
A pretty nice fun album. Not the best, not the worst. Smashing Pumpkins are still lame though
A mixture of metal and melancholy. One aspect I enjoyed, the other just not my cup of tea.
Some excellent songs in there
This was pretty good actually Favorites: Today Mayonaise Silverfuck Sweet Sweet
Quite good and would probably listen to more.
A mixture of metal and melancholy. One aspect I enjoyed, the other just not my cup of tea.
Few good tunes but nothing that memorable.
Not bad but never warmed to this album
Enjoyed it. No bad songs on there but also no amazing ones, rattled along nicely.
Listening conditions - home theatre, a little bit distracted but with Smashing Pumpkin’s further reading. Albums First Rodeo? - i don’t think so. Stand out tracks Cherub Rock - Banger what a great opener. Today - Ionic Smashing Pumpkins, still holds up as an anthem today. An era and genre defining track. Silverfuck - Yeah that’s a great journey. Miss Soma - dull and long, nothing special and following Disarm (which is a very close contender for a stand out track) just really puts this track into bad light. It’s a good album and I try not to listen with hindsight but that can be hard and honestly apart from the singles there’s not much here and I can’t help but think their next album (Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness) is what will always define the band and what they were trying to pull off here. Note this album really picks up again towards the end, looking at you Luna.
fun and upbeat. idk
gitara koja uleti na pocetku- B r u t a l n a
- boring - like from a dream
Never listened to it in full before, but I do like it. Corgans voice is not for everyone but there a couple of really good tracks on here.
Quite melodic
It was fine, but I'm not a huge fan of grunge or the Smashing Pumpkins, so it was not my favorite.
"Lover, lover let's pretend We're born as innocents Cast into the world With apple eyes" (Geek USA) "I'll sing for you If you want me to I'll give to you And it's a chance I'll have to take And it's a chance I'll have to break" (Luna) yo a los dos minutos: bueno, tampoco es tan deprimente esto. yo a los diez minutos: deja que ponga Montero porque me voy a tirar por la ventana.
Mayonaise is the coolest song this band ever did And it's basically 'Sometimes' by MBV.
Cherub Rock and Today still hold up. Some good, a lot of okay.
Used to listen to this loads as a yute; round my mate Simon's, Virtua Fighter 2 on the PS1 and sound off so we could listen to The Pixies, Mark Lanegan and Smashing Pumpkins. Even with that healthy shot of nostalgia in the plus column for this album, Billy Corgan's voice is such that it's still hard going in places. Not bad, though.
The year my brother was born! I have a feeling Cherub Rock was playing right as he came into this world. This is a great guitar hero song and I haven’t listened to this album before so I’m excited to see what’s in store. Hopefully not too many pumpkins were harmed in the making of this album. There is a certain irony in this second song, I didn’t find it to be Quiet at all. I don’t think I’ve heard Today before today but it sounds an awful lot like a Simple Plan plan. Ok I have heard it before now. Maybe Simple Plan hadn’t I won’t presume. This is another instance where I am not a huge fan of Smashing Pumpkins (I certainly wouldn’t do that to a neighbor) but they have some great songs and a few of them are on this album. This does feel like a seminal 90’s album. Something someone would put on while they stare at the posters in their room of Duran Duran and The Ramones as they struggle to do their homework when they really just want to fight the system aka skip class. Rocket stands out to me as another good song from this album. I’m seeing now that we are commenting on the album covers so I really like this one as well, very alt rock.
Not my cup of tea but well made and i am sure someone will like it!

Overrated
Doesn't hit the same as when you're 13
More my kind of thing than Bjork (yesterday's album). I know SP are regarded very highly, but it must be over my head. I like it just fine, but don't see the greatness. After a while, some of the songs started sounding the same to me. I feel like the drums are often too heavy. I will say, I love Disarm, especially the acoustic version (track 17)
This was a lot better than I expected, I’d go as far to say I enjoyed it
Has that wall of guitar sound that comes across kinda dated to me now. Some catchy bits throughout but it all comes down to the fact that I don't like Billy Corgan's voice.
I would have rated this a lot higher in High School, but it's still not bad. I certainly wouldn't' change the radio if any Smashing Pumpkins came on, but it still feels very "of the decade".
