Reviews (page 4 of 13)
It can be hard to take blues and make it sound fun, engaging, and interesting through the whole album without the standards getting a bit tiring. Muddy Waters just gets behind the mic and says "Try me."
Good Blues is something you get lost in, and this album was no exception. Dogged driving riffs combined with Muddy's performance make for a fantastic 45 minutes.
An excellent blues rock adventure into the howling sounds.
Oh Yeah. Fave tracks: Mannish Boy, Bus Driver, I Can't Be Satisfied, The Blues Had a Baby and They Named It Rock and Roll
This is straight blues the way it should be. The songs are riffs here are iconic. The recording is impeccable, and the energy is fantastic. Absolute classic. Fav tracks: Mannish Boy, I Can't Be Satisfied, Deep Down In Florida
Real classic need to buy
An excellent album
Some great songs
All time great. Every song is amazing.
Офигенный альбом, однозначно 5+. Блюз великолепен :)
Fantastic blues album. I don't listen to a lot of blues, so this is a great intro to the genre!
Incredible classic blues album. Will never get tired of it.
03/26/2022 Another great weekend morning and evening album. No skips.
Great blues album
okay
Holy cow this album is heavy. That harmonica rips. If I'm in a metal mood I would quicker throw this on than Metallica or sabbath. Favorite tracks: cross-eyed cat, down in Florida, walk-in thru the park
Blues of the highest quality, there's is not much else to say. Favorite tracks: * Mannish Boy * The Blues Had An Baby And They Named It Rock And Roll * Crosseyed Cat
Awesome
Better experienced with some whisky. Hell yeah, some nice blues.
Amazing energy top to bottom. Mannish boy is a great opening track. That is a charismatic album.
Classic blues. Great album all the way through.
G00D BL00ZE
This would be perfect for a viagra commercial.
So much feeling and soul in this album. I loved it. Made me really appreciate Muddy Waters as an artist and songwriter.
Loved this, archetypal bluesy and soulful album.
They don‘t make them like that anymore. Music from a different time, place, planet. 🎸👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
SLAPS
Just recently (and this project helped) I've been really getting into guitar-driven blues and Muddy Waters is right up my alley (and on some of the playlists I've been listening to). Great album, I really enjoyed it. It wasn't exactly good for my productivity at work though.
1977, p377, 2021-01-04: Spotify. Excellent blues album, single LP
Балдеж.
Absolutely loved it.
Now this is some good quality listening. My ears have recovered from yesterday and they are smiling at some of the smoothest blues. Would listen again!
Really enjoyable 4.7
Favoriete nummers: - Mannish Boy - The Blues Had a Baby and They Named it Rock and Roll
4th August 2021 Listened in my first trip to the FT offices! Perfection.
Such good stuff. There is such passion and honesty in the blues and this just drives from the opening note. Unapologetic and timeless greatness.
Can't believe how much I love this for a country album. Amazing lyricism, great voice, solid understated guitar work. I'm going to need to pick this up on wax.
bomba! al primo oh yeah di mannish boy capisci quanto ce l'ha hard il vecchio Muddy. l'armonica zozza di James Cotton quanto è groovy?
Loved every minute of it!
Top notch shit.
Amazing. song one gave me goosebumps.
Thought this album was really fun and playful.
Now this is truly ROCK & ROLL.
Really fantastic.
Muddy Waters is a reliable provider of sexual Congress.
BLUES
If you feel down and out, put on this album, embrace the feeling, and push through anything. A must-listen for anyone. Great introduction to the Chicago Blues
Love Muddy Waters. This was an excellent album.
It’s Muddy Waters
All I can think about is the Family bit of Muddy Waters passing a kidney stone. "You okay Muddy?" *mannish boy riff* "AAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH"
I enjoyed
An album of blues rock, a genre which is less about individual songs and more about losing yourself to the music. This is a very good record to lose yourself to, and although my appetite for blues is finite, I'm struggling to find anything bad to say about it
I understand the appeal, it definitely inspires emotion. One can take this genre and improvise in a million different ways, but it still sounds intentional. They did it very well.
An undying classic.
Drips with hot sweat. Really good. Not a daily play though. Needs the right environment.
The Blues! In Chicago!
A fun reminder of the swingsy Blues rhythms that underpin a lot ofbthe modern music I listen to.
Classic blues. I knew the first song but not the others. Its fun to know where the song will go even though they are new to me and to also listen to a full album. There's of "noise" that is different from my typical music so that is a fun difference.
Hot damn this was good. The guitar playing is on point. The timing is fantastic. The lyrics are classic. I loved all of it.
The one with the harmonica solos in it
7 Leuke blues. Chicago blues. Maar niet echt mijn stijl. Folk singer van Waters is veel beter.
Chicago blues.
I woke up this morning Dah na nana na Refreshing my tab Dah na nana na New LP to play Dah na nana na It wasn’t half bad Dah na nana na Still Hard, Muddy waters Dah na nana na Playing in my car Dah na nana na Helped my journey to work Dah na nana na But it’s not that far Dah na nana na Nice LP to listen to not great but fine Dah na nana na I’ll stop this now Dah na nana na Cause I’ve ran out of rhymes.
Fun very blusey and unique, opening track I knew, nothing that extraordinarily blew me away
Very well done. Appreciate the blues because of an album like this.
No oli kyllä helvetin kovaa ajoa! Tosi kovia biisejä ja tiukkaa soitantaa.
This was an awesome listen
Really enjoyed this album. It's not the usual "blues riff" song after song like many of the blues albums I've listened to on this list. Solid, but I did get a little tired of it by the last few songs. (4)
I only know a couple of blues songs so this was quite new to me. The first 2 songs where fun to listen after a while they felt a bit repetitive and i got bored. The rest of the album was more exciting. I liked it.
classic blues, especially the first one he does seem a bit horny so the title is appropriate
ew, good to know But I enjoyed this like a lot more than I thought I was going to
Enjoyed this. Really good blues album and "Mannish Boy" is a great song. Waters is a great blues front man. 3.5/5 Probably will listen again
Lovely brass, and also I adore jazz. I’m not a huge blues fan though.
Really good album. Not my go to music style but he nails it for sure. Glad this was my listen for the day.
The production feels almost too clean for a blues album from 1977. It’s undoubtedly A classic, and honestly sounds great. Call me a fucking idiot though, because I like my blues recorded on two tin cans attached by a string. Also, it’s a shame that Mannish Boy was the OG blues meme.
A joyous jazz rump
Blues legend.
Good but sounded the same after a while
It’s good but each song kinda sounds the same
I gotta get me a harmonica
Much better voice, instrumentation rips
I love blues
I listened to this album as I sat guard at a city council meeting workshop. I was already very familiar with the Mannish Boy going into this album, and had a more general familiarity with Muddy Waters as an artist. Hard Again is a classic example of the prototypical deep blues sound, and some of the most iconic riffs in rock come from this album (particularly on Mannish Boy). The music is reliably great, obviously, but I feel like that sometimes makes it harder for individual songs to stand out to me. Typically, bigger shifts in tempo or busy-ness make the songs stand out more to me> I always love moments of carefully utilized instrumental silence, and such instances across this album are some of the best of the best. I also love the little ad-libs before and after songs, as they contribute to the vibe of these songs being performed with a loose and free attitude. Waters' voice is enchantingly deep and resonant throughout, constantly serving as a highlight. I also appreciate some moments which lean more into classic folk instrumentation. Even if some of these songs individually don't stick with me as much as I would have hoped, there is simply no disputing how great Muddy Waters is as a musician. Highlights: Mannish Boy, I Want to Be Loved #2, I Can't Be Satisfied, The Blues Had a Baby and They Named It Rock and Roll, Deep Down In Florida
4 (1977)
This is cool. A raw, hard-headed, energetic take on the blues.
If you like blues, you love this album. I do and I do.
This was a great record. While I often find Blues repetitive, this performance had enough variety and layers to it to really hold my attention. Plus Muddy Waters just has an amazing voice and vibe.
That was cool, I dig the electric
A phenomenal album
good classic blues
I knew of Muddy Waters for a long time but had never listened to him. I’m very glad this album came up for me. It fuckin’ rips.
I am not much of a fan of the blues in general. It is one of my lower rated ones in this project, and that's mostly due to my dislike of most 60's American and British rock/blues music. This album, however, is just so much fun to listen to. It was so clear they were having a blast recording it, and it was produced so that the joy in the performances came through. While many of the lyrics are quite dated, and feature a painful amount of toxic masculinity, it's freaking Muddy Waters so I gave it a pass when thinking of my enjoyment of the songs. Standouts were Mannish Boy, Jealous Hearted Man, The Blues Had a Baby..., and Crosseyed Cat.
sweet
I have almost never listened to the blues but this album has completely changed my mind. So many good songs and such a good vibe but I find that sometimes the endless refrain can become a little mind-numbing. Fav Song: The Blue Had A Baby And It's named Rock and Roll Least fav: Little Girl
Very upbeat
Good ass blues.
This album takes be back to being a little kid watching (and not understanding) Muddy Waters performing “Mannish Boy” in The Last Waltz. Flash forward a few years and I’m a middle schooler seeing Johnny Winter in the second concert I’ve ever gone to. Another few years and I’m watching James Cotton perform in a little New England auditorium. It’s the kind of music that bonded me and my dad, and it still brings me a lot of joy to hear these talented musicians in full force.
This is a really enjoyable album for a blues fan. Maybe not so much if you aren't.... It's a special collection of one of the greatest mid-century bluesman to walk this earth. Mannish Boy grabs my attention, I Can't Be Satisfied starts my toes tapping (if they weren't already) and the incredible production and musicianship keeps me engaged for the albums entirety. Do I feel like you must listen to this album before you die? No. Should that affect my review? Probably... Therefore, my official review is 3.5 (rounded up)
4/5
Very much a return to form for the elder statesman.
Didn't think a 1977 album from Muddy Waters would hit hard
Not my cup of tea, but it's obviously really good tea.
It's Muddy Waters, it opens with Mannish Boy, it's excellently played, and has production that makes you feel like you're in the room. It's great, and acknowledging that I am in no way a fan of the blues, this probably deserves an even higher score than 4 stars.
Big fan
All the songs sound essentially the same, but at least it's a good sound.
The older I get the more I enjoy jazz. This was fun and I will be back.

Classic blues riffs borrowed everywhere
I love the sound.
Tremendous album, including some old classics and some newly penned. I am not a friend of the Blues but Chicago blues, showcased here, its electric, its distorted and yes, it is damn hard. What a man. What an album.
Big opener! Good mellow vibes
It is a fun and relaxing album, really recommend it to be listen while working 4/5
A great blues sound that is an addictive listen. Will definitely listen to this again. 8.5/10 Top song Mannish boy
tipo andreu
Well, I do love me some muddy waters. And this shit… it’s real good. Now obviously I know muddy waters. I’m a Chicagoan. I know mannish boy. I know the legend. It would be wholly remiss if I did not. But I’d never listened to a whole album of his material. And it’s a great time!! The guy is simply an incredible performer, absolutely electric. You can just feel the rawness of the recordings through the speakers. It transports you, it’s beautiful. It’s also incredibly well-produced. Everything about it overwhelms you, from the insane guitars to the striking harmonica, to Mr. Morganfield’s incredible vocals somehow cutting through all of it. I mean, what’s not to absolutely adore? 9.2/10
Great album and even Muddy Waters looks pleased with it on the cover
would listen to in a bar
Oikein hyvä blueslevy. En ollut aiemmin kuunnellut Muddy Watersia, mutta tämän levyn pariin voisin palata vielä.
4.5 if we could do half stars. I loved how this kept its energy throughout and was just very cool!
Really fun album
I love the blues. I love Muddy waters. I love this LP. Fav tracks: Mannish boy, Jealous Hearted Man, The blues had a baby and they named it rock and roll, Deep down in Florida, and Walkin thru the park
Wow, I really like this
A perfectly produced record. I feel like it sounds amazing and still captures the raw energy and sound of Muddy Waters. Excellent blues record. Maybe not something I’ll listen to every day, but a fun listen every once in a while.
Was the first track used for ringtone…?
So much rhythm and soul. I'm sitting at my work desk just tapping my feet wanting to be transported to wherever he played his music live.
The blues never sounded so much fun
I was a bit skeptical when I saw how late this came out but here he is, the blues legend showing everyone how its done. Its a delight from start to finish.
Pretty good just I’m not into jazz
Listens: 3 Standout Tracks: Mannish Boy, The Blues has a Baby and They Named It Rock and Roll, Deep Down In Florida I absolutely loved At Newport 1960. Instant 5 for me. This isn't clicking in the same way for me. None of the songs really stuck out. It's consistently good. I am inclined to give this a 4. I really do love the blues, but I either haven't fully digested this album (very possible) or maybe it's the whole not-live aspect of it that bring it down for me. I can tell you, at the end of some of the songs, when the band members are like "hot damn that was awesome", those are the high points of the album for me. At the end of I Want To Be Loved #2 and I Can't Be Satisfied they sound so fucking excited to have nailed the song. That's cool. It's insightful. It's humanizing (not that these guys are up on a pedestal or anything). I wish more artists did that (some do!).
Muddy Waters turned to wine pretty damn well - this late-career barnstormer shows a vital bluesman at his heavy best.
I always forget how much I like The Blues. Mannish Boy is such a good song. Almost all of the Rock and Metal that I like is Blues based. I love this. The Black Album would be better if it paid homage to The Blues.
Was a good album, overall I thought it was cool and an enjoyable listen
Отличный альбом. Очень ритмичный и энергичный. Первый трек супер просто. По звучанию не слишком сложно но прикольно всё равно.
Is this on the list for comparison with his earlier work? Those would the candidates. This collection is very good, a reworking of songs with better, tighter production. Done to open blues to a new audience. It works.
When the first song (Mannish Boy) got going, I was wondering if I could call this hard blues (like hard rock), or heavy blues (like heavy metal). Wikipedia tells me it’s Chicago blues, and that makes sense (and educates me). Anyway, this sounds like it’s really well made, it’s quite listenable, but it’s not quite my thing - a bit too punchy. I can dig some blues - and respect whoever can keep their progressions fresh - as Muddy Waters and his band certainly did for this album. But not first thing in the morning. I’ll call it Very Good - because I figure it has to be at least Very Good at being what it is. 8/10.
Sinners type music
classic 4 stars
I'm no blues aficionado, but this sounds like the most classic blues I could imagine. Full of groove and soul. Solid 4.25/5.
This album reminded me of “The Blue Box Blues” which was a Kraft Macaroni and Cheese commercial about a girl who had the blue box blues. 4 stars
Great blues album from Waters (his best of that decade) Lovely stripped back production which gives it a live quality All of the musicians are on good form even if they threaten to spill over a little but Willie Smith's solid drumming keeps everything on track. Top stuff.
Classic blues.
I do reaaly like it actually. All the instruments parts is just perfection and i do know a sonf¿g for the album.
It’s sensual, laid-back, a bit jazzy, and really rhythmic. Overall I liked it, though the songs felt pretty similar. The first track is a big hit. My rating: 7/10.
ammmo el blues, m encanto cada cancion aunq algunas suenan repetitivas otras me sorprenden para bien
An absolute blues reverie. I have a hard time discerning different songs due to the similarities between them. Not to say I didn’t enjoy it immensely. It’s the real McCoy and a stylistic original collection of music.
Muddy can sing the same one song over and over again, and it'd have more soul than any of the White Guy with an Acoustic Guitar albums on this list.
Hard not to like Muddy Waters.
Hell yeah.
Très cool mais un peu trop répétitif
Sympa j'zime bien
pure fire and acid 🔥
I've never felt more like singing the blues when City win and United lose...go Muddy
Mannish Boy is so good. The rest is fun
Siempre me ha parecido que Muddy es un gran artista. Buena voz, buena composición: buen álbum.
Classic blues. Just what I needed on a rainy dreary Tuesday.
Some real bangers. A legendary vibe/voice. Enjoyed listening to the rhythm section.
I was a bit torn between a 3 and 4 here, but ultimately decided that I think Muddy Waters is one of the best do ever do it and so deserves the higher rating. My only struggle with it, really, is that I just don't find the blues to be that interesting most of the time.
Down home and dirty Chicago blues album. Really enjoyed this one as well. Simple, effective blues from one of the genre’s legends. Great guitar playing, and his gravelly voice is perfect for the style. Made me want drink some bourbon in a smoky Chicago club. 4/5
Pretty good blues
I mean it’s Mr Blues himself. The OG. How many bands and artists have name checked Muddy Waters as inspiration? Would the title have been a euphemism when it was released? Blues is great, the sound of the harmonica is spine tingling. Loved the album. 4.0/5.0 Best Song: I Can’t Be Satisfied
Good Solid Blues, Muddy Waters is the man, what a guitar player. Its got so much attitude and so much grit. The bloke knows his way around a guitar as well. Best track: Mannish Boy
It’s a pretty good blues album that o really enjoyed. Some songs are too longing otherwise it’s great
This style of electric blues isn't very "fashionable" today I don't think. But it is very easy to enjoy. And here it is played to perfection.
Lots of bluesy picking and shredding here!
Great song
Bus Driver is an all time blues ripper, same with I Can't Be Satisfied. Unfortunately not much stands out on this for me, though Muddy Waters charisma and his excellent band are remarkable.
For the most part, I really enjoyed this, but that didn’t surprise me. I have heard Mannish Boy covered so many times, that I am probably over that one, but this is still an excellent, good old blues record. Four stars.
Decent 4
look at his face, with that pose and this album title. Muddy Waters knew what he was doing. Hard Again opens with "Mannish Boy", one of the best opening tracks I've listened to across these 233 albums. it strips the blues to its barest essentials, hitting the same riff over and over and over again for over five minutes. you've heard of a three-chord blues: now try just one. I could see Swans recording a take on it! the first four tracks are a raw, rugged assault on the senses, with so many instruments playing at once, from the multiple guitars to the keys to the distorted harmonica. somehow, they simultaneously compete for dominance and work as a perfect unit. I can't explain it. Johnny Winter, the album's producer, also plays some mean slide guitar and is, according to Wikipedia, credited with "miscellaneous screams". he's basically Waters' hypeman, and it's such a great dynamic. propulsive drumming as well. this is yet another reminder to myself to listen to more blues. strong 8/10.
1 listen. Favorite Track: Jealous-Hearted Man
Expectation: -> At least I'd heard of Neil Young. Not so here. After listening: -> Never heard this album but its influence has made it ubiquitous. If I owned a blues bar, it would be on repeat. Track ranking: Mannish Cat Bus Jealous #2 Baby Walkin Satisfied FL Girl
All I think about is the scene in the office with Michael and Darryl in the moving truck when Darryl is teaching Michael the Blues. It's the same song.
Classic Muddy Waters. Its good to hear some of the blues classics.
Блюз з тих жанрів, що поважаю, але практично не слухаю. Хороший альбом, Mannish Boy суперхіт. Дуже сподобалися загальна енергетика і звук гітари.
Great album ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Blues is definitely one of my blind spots hi Sinners) and I have absolutely never heard of Muddy Waters (or have I? Perhaps in passing or as a lyric or poem). Thrilled to be introduced. Opening song is music that became bad to the bone? (Mannish Boy; per wiki re Black manhood)
Blows my mind that this is 1977. Send decades younger. This album is absolutely incredible. Not much more to say about that.
8 - GOOD
Terrific set. I don’t love it as much as I do After Rain as far as late period muddy but I’m not slagging this one, I just love that dirty grimy album. Muddy and a band of guys who know what the fu k they’re doing with produced by a guy who clearly loves the music and knows when to leave well enough alone in a room for three days. The real deal.
Cooler than I thought
man's got a VOICE
Bit samey but great blues
Good blues. Well produced.
I don’t know enough of Muddy Water’s back catalogue to know if this is the best offering but I know as an artist in general he’s a must listen, for sure.
It’s the Bluesprint. Get it?
Blues. Soulful, gritty Blues with great performances by all the musicians and Muddy Waters himself. The slide guitar, the harmonica, the piano, the vocals. All brilliantly done. Mannish Boy is a great opening track. Fantastic album.
SO FUCKING GOOD
Really good. Makes me want to explore the blues more.
Man what do you want me to say, the GOAT of blues for a reason. 8/10
Not always my vibe but always good
Great stuff.
Fun fact: Winnipeg is based on the word winipīhk which in Western Cree, means muddy waters. Anyways I thought this was some enjoyable music.
Muddy Waters is a great blues singer
3,5
Some of the songs remind me of Sea Sick Steve. Enjoyed this one.
Very good album and worth its place on the list
Mannish Boy is one of the greatest riffs of all time. I feel like a fucking MAN listening to that shit. The whole album is pretty great. It is all 12 bar blues and I can't listen to too much of that in one sitting, but nevertheless this thing rocks.
first blues album full listen? huh
I love Chicago Blues.
I wish I could better articulate what the tangible differences between blues, blues rock, and what I think could be called "electric blues" is. Because I don't really like "blues rock", but I do like the blues, and I do like "electric blues", which I kind of just think of as blues with an electric guitar, but "Blues with an electric guitar" is also getting awfully close to a way that one *could* describe rock and roll, sometimes. But regardless, Hard Again by Muddy Waters came out in 1977, which feels downright modern for an album on which someone is truly, honestly, earnestly playing the blues. Not rock and Roll, and not Blues Rock, there *is* an electric guitar though. And what that electric guitar does to The blues is pretty magical. The ultra-emotive vocals of traditional blues are here, and the relatively simple riffs and song structures are here too. But the electricity here means that the guitar can finally cry as convincingly as the Bluesman himself. On top of it, those simple riffs I mentioned end up really chunky, and honestly kind of heavy on these songs. Blues Rock just doesn't have the raw power that this sort of stuff occasionally exerts. Somehow I've gotten this far without really talking about Muddy Waters himself. He's got some incredible charisma here. Keeping stuff on the rails, and audibly relishing in it when stuff goes off into jammy territory sometimes. When I looked this up, I was surprised that this stuff was actually recorded in the late 70's. Muddy Waters was getting old, and frankly, this music sounds like it should've come out before 1955. But I attribute that to his history. To put it simply, the man *knew* how to play the blues and he had the decades to prove it. I really thoroughly enjoyed this. There are some fantastic, powerful songs here, and Muddy Waters is an incredible well of charisma that holds it together.
yes! Endless middle aged be-goateed hwhite men fucking around with the blues will never be able to match this energy. You can go to Clarksdale and see the cabin this mf used to live on in a plantation, then let the electric chicago blues tear the space fabric between the modern age and the delta. Makes the da duh duh da DUM blues not just tolerable but great. Love whoever is yelling in the background.
I don’t listen to blues every day, or even every year, but I really enjoyed this piece of musical history. “Mannish Boy” is a killer opening track and, hands down, my favorite on this album.
Spectacular start, one of my favorite Blues tracks. There are some more great songs here and overall this is just a fantastic Blues record. It is still Blues though and I really need to be in the mood for Blues to really get me. Today it worked.
Good straight-up blues record, classic. Gets repetitive by the end. Rocking harmonica, nasty guitar and adult lyrics
Beautiful classic blues
Love the album, Blue is quite new to me, but I loved it
Good record! Groovy -
The only reason it’s not a 5 is because a lot of his songs are really repetitive. The same riff played again and again and again.
The more I listened to this, the more I enjoyed it. Very solid album.
Some great blues rhythms on the album. Crosseyed Cat was probably my favourite.
Muy bueno
This was so fun! Why don’t people make music like this anymore? I probably am just ignorant
Solid 4, a lot of genuine stuff here
Like the blues? Then this is Excellent.
Pretty good. Quite not my style
Great stuff. Muddy waters can do no wrong.
Great--clearly influential music
Mannish Boy I Want to Be Loved #2 Jealous Hearted Man The Blues Had a Baby Crosseyed Cat
wonderful album again! cant complain
Gefiel mir sehr, schöner Blues Sound
Pretty cool. Muddy from time to time calls out to someone called Johnny in the bridge and Johnny arrives with a shit-tonne of shredding. However apart from Jonny’s boring contributions there’s a real swagger about this recording. But I can’t help feeling a Chess years comp would be the place to start.
𝘏𝘢𝘳𝘥 𝘈𝘨𝘢𝘪𝘯 is exactly the kind of blues record that hits with both grit and joy. There’s a real sense of rebirth here — Muddy sounding energized, playful, and fully in command, pushed along by Johnny Winter’s raw, crackling production and a band that sounds alive in every bar. It’s unpretentious, loud, and full of personality. Sometimes you just need a record that reminds you why the blues keeps surviving.
Has the best of both worlds excellent production but still sounds spontaneous and gritty.
i mean come on it’s muddy fuckin waters
I like my blues a little less raucous, but this was a good listen.
Mannish Boy and I Can't Be Satisfied are the obvious standouts. The rest is good, but pretty standard issue post-war blues. The mix favors the vocal, guitar, and harmonica; the rhythm section is practically inaudible, which is a shame. Still well worth listening to.
I'm not a blues expert, but you can easily tell this is a solid blues album. If you hate blues, you're gonna hate it. If you love blues, you're probably gonna love it. If you have any interest for music in general, you should be able to at least enjoy it. I don't see how anyone with a minimun interest can rate this with less than 3 stars.
It rips
The busiest of the blues. Very stripped down, exactly what it needed to be. A particularly standout for me was the gentleman screaming in the background
Holy smokes this album is dripping with so much feeling! It’s the ‘70s so the recording sounds nice and warm which complements all these great one take jams. Great to see that someone as capable and knowledgeable as Johnny Winter was involved with this. I don’t know much about all the old blues guys but this makes me realize how much more work I want and need to put in with the blues to round out my musical knowledge.
70s blues. Sultry, great rhythm. Excellent blues album.
My rating 4.0. Excellent album but then again I love the blues. The line up is fantastic as is the execution.
Muddy Waters had a powerful voice. There's a lot of energy evident in listening to this - everybody seems to be having a good time recording. Excellent production - everything is present and nothing overwhelms or gets lost. For me, it starts to drag a bit as it goes on and there's not any one track that stands out in any way. Overall, though, a fun listen and I'd say a worthy entry on this list.
Mannish Boy (!) I want to be loved #2 (!!) В целом песенки +- похожие, дикий блюз, круто, нраица Каждая песня в принципе заслуживает (!)
track 2 and 7* unbelievable guitar unbelievable bass
7.5/10
Masterful.
I used to think Johnny Winter was a little over-the-top as a white boy lost in the blues. But this is such a smart, cool and sympathetic reclamation project that all is forgiven. Muddy sounds great and happy, and the band is rocking. Only docked on a star because the old Chess recordings with Little Walter and company are so powerful and original.
Felt like finding, under an old tree root, the true spring source for a thousand riffs spanning all genres of music. Backbone music.
It starts out with a bang and doesn't let up. It was like a wall of sound but blues. Big energy and soul went into this album.
Wonderfully modern sounding production of some fantastic blues. 4*
unique voice, I can hear where other blues/ r&b artists derive their influence/inspiration.
I don't think that there's a record that's more blues than this. One would place this somewhere in the '50s, but not in the midst of the Disco era. Of course, many songs sound similar; the blues is based on a few basic riffs and rhythms, and the rest is the singing and the improvisations/solos.
Made me hard again
One of the best to ever do it doing it loud.
Having never really taken the time to sit down with blues music, I really enjoyed this. There is an incredible 'live' sense to the recording and I found it really easy to listen to. May just have started a little need to go and brush up on other influential blues artists!
It's 1 of the post WW2 blues greats, it's cornerstone music of most of what’s on the whole list. When listening to it it's great, and im not sure why don't listen to more? But it's not a go to preference. Know it's a cliche about the blues being real, but this even as a later recording just has something, well real. And this anyday over that Eric Clapton and his ilk waterdown. 4 Star
I'm sure I've heard his songs, but never sat down and listened to an album/song on purpose. I really enjoyed this. I'd throw this on a playlist. Is it bad that his music just makes me want to sit in a bar and have too many drinks? A scene out of the Wire at either the cop or dock worker's bar. The blues just remind me of summer street festivals, and walking past bars blaring this music out of open windows in the city.
a little same-y after a while, but even my stoic heart couldn't withstand that energy and joy. a fun album to spend some time with!
muddy waters is a hell of a blues singer. favorites: mannish boy, i want to be loved #2, jealous hearted man, crosseyed cat
solid blues album
Old school blues feel. I especially love the commentary before and after the songs from Muddy Waters as well as the rest of band. It makes it feel so much more *real*.
Yeahhhh this was great. V glad I got to listen to this Songs added to playlist: - Mannish Boy - Bus Driver - The Blues Had a Baby and They Named It Rock and Roll
Muddy Waters can play the blues. I can see him as being an inspiration for modern musicians. The guitar and harmonica feels a lot like BB KIng so I can see that influence. After I listened to the album I had to look him up and read about his very colorful life. I listen to all kinds of music but some of the songs all sounded alike to me.
Never in my wildest dream did I imagine I would enjoy this record so much. Feels like history and the present all at the same time.
This album was great. You can see how Elvis and Bob Dylan were influenced by Muddy Waters.
Very good, but all the songs sounded the same
Great blues album. It all kinda sounds the same though, you can only do 12 bar blues for so long lol.
I was excited to see this come up. I've certainly listened to Muddy Waters, but mostly within playlists, not a full album. And I was right to be. It's a great album! Excellent blues riffs. Loved it.
Soulful and considered
This was nice
Beautiful
I am officially a Hoochie Coochie Man, thank you Mr Waters
The blues sung with a smile. You can hear how much muddy enjoys the company and playing of Johnny Winter.
8/10 – Very Good
Feels like eating a whole damn meal.
Utterly superb. The pure swag of Muddy Waters. The sound quality is unreal - could have been recorded yesterday. And the band's whoops and yells on Mannish Boy just capture so well the sweeping irreverence and pleasure of playing live when a bunch of musicians come together. Joy in the blues.
A brief review today because I'm sleep deprived. This album kicks ass, has all of the raucous blues energy and more to spare. The production and engineering work by Johnny Winter, as well as the session musicians assembled to work with him, are all top notch, and you can tell Winter was determined to make Waters' first on his record label a gem. His street cat growl remains iconic even almost 50 years later. This doesn't get a 5 because it doesn't feel like it's pushing the boundary of the genre, but this album is a true classic. Favorite Track: "Mannish Boy" Least Favorite Track: N/A YEAAAAAH's from the backing band: All of 'em
Starting my morning with Mannish Boy was quite the pleasant surprise. As an Austinite who grew up hearing his fair share of Stevie Ray, this guitar style has always held a certain a appeal. It's been way too long since I listened to Muddy Waters album, and I'm now kicking myself for that fact. Everything about the music is just so evocative and raw. The hammered keys on Bus Driver, the whining guitars on Deep Down in Florida, Muddy's iconic voice... It's erratic, emotional, and heavy. And working with Johnny Winters to iron out some of the less desirable technical rawness of recording refines the sound in just the right ways.
I'm just so glad this was a different genre than the last like 5 days. I also appreciated getting this album on MLK day - it felt more fitting. I've never thought of myself as much of a blues person but I think I really like the vibe of the genre. Is it something I'm going to reach for daily? No. But is it perfect for the summer evening porch vibes? Yes. I hope to get a few more albums like this in the mix - especially for it's influence over other genres. There are a number of musical phrases/hooks that I feel like I've heard in modern music.
Classic blues condensed down to its basics. It’s a great album to create a mood
I don't usually listen to blues, all i know are blues-like songs made by rock artists. Tho it will not become my favourite and most listened to genere of music this album was a grat inftoduction. The smooth vocals, sharp harmonica and glorious guitar made the whole experience very enjoyable. The rythm of the songs was very plesant too. Overall, it's a great album in it's genere and it's an amazing representation of it. Also, some of the songs being extra long are a nice treat in the age of fast and short songs.
Enjoyed more than expected but would be so much better in live!
Rock'n'roll! Yeeeaaaaaaah!
Sometimes the blues makes me crave barbecue so bad that I literally salivate. This does that
Great sound
Great stuff here, amazing voice and some superb blues riffs
Sounds older than it is, but in a good way. Faves: Mannish Boy, I Can't Be Satisfied,The Blues Had a Baby and They Named It Rock and Roll
It was a good album. Extremely talented blues musician and defined that scene when he was alive
This album is like sitting on your lunchbreak eating an uninspiring sandwich and complaining with your workmates about your broken down relationships. You are a construction worker, currently working in the height of summer to build a new house for some 20 year old Silicon Valley tech-bro who looks at you and the other workers as a lower form of life. You have to be polite and agreeable though, as you need this job. Your wife is a bitch. She doesn't appreciate you, instead she just waits for you to bring home your next paycheck so that she can go and blow it on handbags and scarves. You're pretty sure she is cheating on you, but by the time you get home from work each day you are too exhausted to bring it up. It all looks pretty bleak, but luckily your workmates are also in shit situations. While that knowledge doesn't improve your perspective too much, at least you all gain a sense of community as you face your respective struggles. Time to go back to work now, maybe you'll make up some bullshit about how the tiles this tech-douche have chosen aren't suitable, and he's gonna need to replace them at his own expense. Fuck that guy, it's all about finding little things that make you smile.
I Want To Be Loved #2, I Can't Be Satisfied, are some great songs. I thought I wouldn't like this album, and there are some songs I definitely don't like, but overall, it's a pretty good album!
I really like this blues album! Good beats and instrumentation, although a bit repetitive at times
Most of the songs feel like a diferent iteration of themselves, so it can get repetive, but since it’s a short album, that doesn’t bother me too much. Overall I liked it alot.
8/10 - very cool blues album, bangin
Fun fun fun
It's simultaneously angry and joyous, dirty yet clean. But it's unmistakably the blues. It'll remove you that rock came from blues, but this is the blues.
Very jazzy heard a few songs that I fw
7.5/10
Craig: good, not great Courtney: excellent background music but blues melodies do get a little repetitive.
Surprisingly very into this. Makes me want to go to Kingston Mines
Blues hasn't grabbed me like some other genres but I can really appreciate the musicianship on display in this album. It could probably be better appreciated with a trip to the town(s) were the music was concocted, to truly soak up and imbibe the vibe. Throughout the album, the grooves are swampy, muddy even, and every song is filled with superb displays of playing, from each melody instrument - lead guitar, rhythm and harmonica. From playing the main riffs as a unit to the individual trills at the end of a bar, this comes across as a prime example of blues, if not the finest in existence. But I'm not the best person to judge that last point. The opening song has a familiar blues hook that has had countless copycats over the ages and thanks to the musicians and the sound engineering, this album sounds timeless. If this was released today, in my opinion it would still be a big hit. The songs that caught my attention the most on this listen were: Jealous Hearted Man - fantastic groove - as can be said about the whole album, but this one has a Can't be satisfied - guitar work through your is intricate and superbly well played. I could return to this again one day, who knows. Best for 📻👨🏻🍳🍸🥃🍻
Definitely would listen to again! Great find!
Favorite Tracks: Mannish Boy / Bus Driver / The Blues Had a Baby / Walkin' Thru the Park Rating: 4.2 I dig a good blues album, and I've listened to this before along with some other Muddy Waters' albums like the Chess Box, the London Sessions, and even Electric Mud. Overall this is just a rock-solid, classic, blues album that leans a bit into rock, and Muddy's voice and guitar playing shines throughout. The harmonica parts, courtesy of James Cotton, are great throughout as well.
Phenomenal record
