Good times. Great memories

This is Guns N' Roses debut album (duh) which became famous a year after its release. You know, I do remember hearing "Welcome to the Jungle" before this album blew up which I liked (and still do) quite a bit. And blew up, it did; you couldn't turn on MTV without seeing one of their videos within half an hour, they were constantly played on rock radio for the next ten years and at the college I was at, just about every local band I saw in 1988/1989 covered "Sweet Child O' Mine." Given all that, this album still rocks. It is firmly in the hard rock category but there are parts of certain songs that take it in a heavier, somewhat funky or more punk direction. The songs were written while they were on their LA club circuit and actually, a bunch of these songs ended up on future albums. The songs were written by individual band members, not as a group, and what is unique is when they name names they name actual real people names. Walk the walk. The album has a side G (Guns) which has songs about the inner city, drugs, getting drunk and the police and a side R (Roses) which has songs about girls, love and relationships. I did not know. I thought I might have trouble finding anything to speak of or even like given the iconic and over-played nature of some of these songs. I guess time heals somewhat; there's plenty to like. "Mr. Brownstone" is about the daily rock and roll grind and an increasing heroin habit. Slash wrote this song and Izzy's guitar riffs and Slash's solo are great. It also has a solid backing rhythm. Speaking of great guitar, "Paradise City" is probably my favorite GNR song. I can't believe I just said that. But, especially in the verses and the last part of the song, the band just kicks this into gear and you do hear the punk and metal influence especially in the guitar. The two song highlights from the R-side are both name name songs. "My Michelle" is about their friend Michelle Young who is basically a train wreck. The backing music is heavy, changes pace and fits the song. "Rocket Queen" is about LA underground scene leader Barbi Von Grief and there is actual sound footage of sex. An appropriate way to end this album. I was/am not the biggest GNR fan but found a lot to really enjoy in this album I had forgotten about. Note: I included both albums covers. The one on the left showing a robot rapist being attacked by some metal avenger was pulled prior to the initial release. They tried to use that cover again on a reissue. Again, pulled prior to the release.

I’d like to thank Gn’R - and this album specifically - for showing pre-adolescent me how to fluently drop F-bombs into your everyday vernacular.

fuck yeah my middle school jam

An exemplary Rock album.

Do you know where you are? You're in 90s rock nostalgia baby! Okay okay, it was late 80s, but who's counting?! Still rocks! 🤘

If you don't like this album you don't like rock.

"Hair Metal" with balls

One of, if not, the best debut albums of all time.

Maybe one of the best openings of all time.

Amazing!

A game changer album from the 80s.epic

Absolute classic rock album. They were so huge for a while.

Five stars. Killer songs from the 1st track to the last.

Classic

So good

Helpot 5*.

They arrived with a massive explosion. There was some great rock around at that time, but it wasn't played on commercial radio. Instead we had that travesty known as "hair metal." Firstly, it wasn't metal, it was plastic pop with guitars. It didn't rock, it primped. I took one look at G'n'R and expected more of the same. Then I heard this! It just launches and never sets down. Usually I get bored with too much of the same, but they rock so hard it doesn't matter. Like every great band it begins with the rhythm section. Slash peels off solos that Page would struggle to equal. Like all the great leads, he is melodic, not just some boring shredder like Steve Vai. Axl doesn't have a great voice, but it suits the songs. This is one of the great debut albums, yet they went better with Use Your Illusion(s)...

algumas músicas lado B muito boas e algumas meio constrangedoras. Sweet child of mine realmente uma grande canção né

I'm not sure there's anyone over the age of...10? 12? who hasn't heard at least a few songs from this. I remember when this came out - there was a slow burn, people were sort of aware of it, then BAM it blew up and was *everywhere* - it was lumped in with the other longhair/spandex heavy rock of the time but is definitely different: greasier, dirtier, more raw - like the punk rock of hair metal. Due to the popularity - and it's gotten bigger over the years, too - I honestly never ever need to hear Paradise City, Welcome to the Jungle, Sweet Child again thanks to unimaginative and boring classic rock radio [or watch any hockey game and guaranteed at least 2/3 are played between plays], although to be fair in context they do sound great here. Some of the non-hits are absolute killers, especially the first half up to Paradise City; my highlight is that "Mr Brownstone" riff which has always been one of my favourites. So yeah - I hadn't voluntarily put this on in years but it's just a damn great angry punky stupid infantile amazing sounding album - emphasis on how cool it sounds; the dual guitars were/are nothing new but the way they didn't exactly match up and kept that perfectly-designed sloppiness in a Stones kinda way is probably what puts this album over the top. I'm not always in the mood for it and it's not necessarily my favourite kind of music [mostly please please look away from the totally 80s sexist-as-hell-at-best lyrics] but it's also arguably one of the 3-4 greatest debuts in rock history, perfect for the time, and I'm not sure could have been any better... if that's not a 5 star then what's the point... 9/10 5 stars.

I know before even turning this on its going to be 5/5. What a great album, so many hits and still so relevant today, 35 years later.

Had only ever listened to the 'hits' before, so this is my first time listening to the entire album. I thoroughly enjoyed it, I already knew I liked the hits and the Guns N' Roses sound. i also thought the rest of the tracks were a fun listen, especially "Mr. Brownstone" and "My Michelle". However, "Rocket Girl" was slightly odd.

A whole album of face melters.

An absolutely fantastic hard rock album and a classic for good reason. Fast and dirty, yet with enough technical appeal and interesting song writing.

Excellent rock album. Lots of hits - has me ready to blow thru a wall!

timeless classic, definition of the hard rock, 3 unforgettable songs, everyone knows them.

FUCKING LOVE THEM <3 Deffo 5/5

Not a bad song or a dud note, it screams with a high-throttle energy and the virtuoso of one of the all-time great guitarists.

A classic, truly awesome

That Album is F-ing awesome

Great album. Can’t believe it’s 35 years old. Not a bad track on it. Easily best I’ve listened to so far and better than I’d remembered it being

Was delighted to see this come up. What a tornado of an album. A couple filler songs are astronomically offset by all-time banger after banger, crowned by my all time favorite tune Paradise City. I’m on the night train, so’s I can leave this slum… 10/10

I know this is overplayed but shit it's a good album & I love it!

One of the most enthralling, exhilarating, refreshing and outright rollicking hard rock albums of the 80s. Guns n' Roses put all of their eggs in one basket here and it produced brilliant results. No wonder why we all go back to it time and time again. Favorites: Welcome to the Jungle, Mr. Brownstone, Paradise City, Sweet Child o' Mine, Rocket Queen.

The first and IMO, the best!

Classic.

Good music for its time

Would get a 5 just based on the opening guitar riff. Classic album for me

i love

I never knew this sold poorly in the US - and took off here - hell, I had the cassette. To quote Kerrang "rock is at last being wrestled from the hands of the bland, the weak, the jaded, the tired, the worn". Yeh, rock on 🤘

This is an old, old favorite that I used to listen to on my walkman in college. Aside from a couple of lyrics that still make me cringe, this is a brilliant piece of work. Great songs, great riffs, great vocals. I will always love it.

I pretty much ignored this album when it came out. At the time I didn’t think I liked hard rock. Somewhere became then and now I became a fan of the genre and several songs on this album, but never went back to listen to this. I’m glad to have this come up! I went into this loving “Paradise City” and “Welcome to the Jungle” and “Sweet Child Of Mine.” So going in to this listen I’m already on board with a quarter of the album. Glad I finally got around to listening to the rest. There are a lot more songs on this for me. “It’s So Easy,” the first new-to-me GNR song I’ve heard in decades, had me at the first chorus. So much talent in this band... The vocal performance in “Mr. Brownstone” shows real versatility. I love the different sound. “My Michelle” was a pretty sweet (for them) love song leading into “Sweet Child of Mine” - a song that I’ve never tired of hearing. APPETITE FOR DESTRUCTION is sex, drugs and rock and roll and I like it! This listen was long overdue.

Absolutely storming

Sehr gut

+ 10 for the linear art and the boob I got to see as a 10 year old. I didnt understand all the stuff going on in the photo at the time. I just saw a boob. 5 - Nothing hits harder than Welcome to the Jungle as an opening track.

It was amazing.

Great album. Heard many times.

If I'm going to give 5 stars to Guns N' Roses it has to be for this album... so here it goes...

Absolute classic. Night Train my favorite. 5/5

Great album with a bunch of known songs. Welcome to the Jungle, Paradise City, Sweet Child O'Mine. 9/10.

Rabia. Rock en estado puro. Voz inconfundible y guitarras míticas. Auténtico disco de cabecera

Classic/10

Discazo

What can you say? I have listened to this album literally hundreds of times in my life and I can guarantee that I'll listen to it more. Classic hard rock album. One of the best.

Perfect

So many classics and a few forgotten gems

The greatest debut album from any rock band.

Is there any doubt?

I had forgotten what a perfect rock album this is.

Great album 9/10

Absolute banger. Every song is good

Classic album. One of the best rock albums of all time easily. Arguable one of the best debut albums from any band ever. There’s not a bad track on the entire album.

One of the all-time great hard rock albums

As a statement of intent, it doesn't get any better than this.

Not the first nor last band to release a debut album, that they then never manage to top. 'Appetite...' is all stellar, sleazy hardrock tunes. Honed through .years of shows and recorded by an obviously hungry band. With riffs, licks and leads to conquer the world, there was never real competion to GnR Fave track; Mr. Brownstone, with the rest of the tracks coming in close second

Amazing.

So many classics: Welcome to the Jungle, Paradise City, Sweet Child O'mine'. Classic album. Easily a mid to high 4, bordering a 5. Rounded up to 5.

Brilliant

A timeless classic

Best album yet. An album to actually listen to before you die. Some of the others I would rather die than listen 🤣

Remains edgy and sounds fantastic 30 years later.

Stone cold classic

Probably my most listened to album of all time. I’ve never tired of it, still sounds fresh, all killer and no filler - a game changing album for me musically - I could rave on for hours about it - the easiest five stars I will ever dish out on this

One of the Best

the best-selling debut album of all time for a reason!

J’ai découvert des tounes moins connues une fois Welcome to the Jungle terminée. Bref, c’est un 5!

Classic

Great album, plays like a greatest hits album, awesome listening to it

Doesn't get more 5 than this

Funny that my mom said she "hates GNR" then when Sweet Child of Mine came on, she's saying "OMG who performs this - I love this song!" :')

Hell yeah

This is all good stuff

Love this album... hard to find a bad song on the whole thing. GNR at their peak and an album I need to put into the rotation.

Fantástico

What's to say? It's AMAZING

I love this album. Always have. Always will. One of the first albums I remember being able to listen to start to finish.

When they had it together, GNR were amazing. Great album.

Not listening, have heard it enough. It’s perfect, quintessential 80’s metal.

peak classic rock

One of the greatest rock albums of all time. Big guitar sounds, every song is great

Testament to GNRs success that I knew most of this album just from the hits, but liked hearing some new things by them from this album.

I'd never actually listened to the whole album, but knew a few singles I knew I'd love. Solid album, some songs I wasn't too fond of, others I found I rather enjoy. Great choice!

Seminal rock album some absolute tunes, Axel Rose is still a prick

Good guitar band

Classic hard rock album. I think there’s a couple duds, but this was really a moment in rock, and even the songs I’m not crazy about have some kick ass-ity to em

One of the best debut albums of all time. One of the best hard rock albums of all time with many iconic songs that almost everyone on the planet knows.

Fun album. In my view this sound is the gold standard for hard rock as a genre. So many tracks with well-deserved classic status on this.

This is hard hitting repetitive sounds that work together like magic and just make sense, typical 80’s that is timeless. fifty percent of it is iconic.

Great listen.

Excellent. A pillar of rock…and I get that this comments has a looking for Chinese food at an Italian restaurant vibe, but the fucking misogyny that’s sprinkled over this record makes me crazy…best shown by the lyric “turn around bitch I’ve got a use for you. You’ve got nothing better to do and I’m bored.” Blech.

"Paradise City", "Welcome To The Jungle", "Sweet Child O' Mine" Full of (head)bangers Unfortunately, I prefer softer stuff. Still a crazy album

I would put this album into the "Dad rock" category but I do like it significantly more that some of the other "dad rock" albums that I have been served so far. I like the heavy sound and the vocals. I love a guitar solo. The hits on this album are WAY over-exposed but are(were?) hits for a reason. One review I read talked about this being music you play while drinking beers in the garage after hitting on a waitress from Applebee's and yeah that's about right. I don't approve of harassing the waitress but you could catch me listening to this with older relatives on a dock on the fourth of July and I would be happy to be there.

🤘💀

Sounds like high school. The range of songs here is crazy!

It's hard to be cynical about this one, even if this isn't quite my style. It's an explosive rock'n'roll journey with a lot intensity and passion behind it. It's large, energetic and over the top. The overplayed songs are overplayed for a reason. The quality of some of these songs have stood the test of time. Every song sounds distinct, and feel very much like they belong on the album. I'm just sick and tired of so many of the songs on here, but I don't feel as if it's a fair criteria to rate it by. It's definitely influential, iconic and beloved by many, and in a vacuum if I've never heard those songs before I'm pretty sure I'd also like them. Good record, a charitable 4/5.

listed to this album quite a few times b4 defo one of my favourite GNR albums absolute classic :) own it on CD

This album is the truest test of the question “Is it good or do I just already know it?” Paradise City is truly an excellent song, Welcome to the Jungle is a testosterone fueled romp, but the rest of it came off pretty corny. Still fun, but for an album that was a formative part of my discovery of my own music taste, it’s not actually as good as I remember.

It completely encompasses what it was like to be a rock band of the time. There’s an element of lawlessness that completely comes through in the album.

You could go on and on about how this and that or you could just sum it up simply. Its not a masterpiece unless it holds some emotional space in your life, it is however an incredibly solid album with only a couple of clunky moments. IMO Mr. Brownstone and Rocket Queen are better than any of the singles. About as close to 5 stars as you can get without quite getting there.

I don't particularly love these "big stadium" rock artists, cause they are very repetitive. But I'd say this album has enough bangers to get a 4

This album rocks. A lot. Maybe the last true rock band in the classic sense to exist. Terrible personalities, actions, and stories after the fact. The songs have endured, they’re full of young, raw, male energy and kill it. Make you want to run through a wall.

Holds up

Great album...

Classic rock album I grew up hearing all the time

Perfff prtty solid, reminds me of megamind.

This album is great but all the popular songs have been overplayed to the point where I hate them.

Just because it was very important to me as a kid. I couldn't get through more than 4 songs this time around.

Not a fan but can't deny the quality and overall importance.

A destacar: Track 1 - Welcome to the Jungle Track 2 - It's So Easy Track 5 - Mr. Brownstone Track 6 - Paradise City Track 9 - Sweet Child o' Mine Track 12 - Rocket Queen

I like some of the songs in the albulm

2- oooohhh gun n' roses! Finally an excuse to actually listen to an album from them. I downloaded the album directly. May listen to it later during lunch and omw to the library. Very liking it so far I liked welcome to the jungle and realised I already sweet child o mine I sadly didn't get more time to appreciate it better :(((

The singles are absolutely colossal. That guitar solo in Sweet Child is sensational. Beyond that, the waters can get pretty muddy at times, though all in all it's an awesome shot of LA hard rock pomp. Sounds like a good time. Pretty amazing that it's their debut. Came out fully-formed!

Rock stars being rock stars, just a classic.

Maybe because of nostalgia but there was good songs on this! It’s a cool sound in general too.

Always was and still is an incredible powerhouse of an album. My rating is for purely sentimental reasons.

This was a pretty awesome listen, loved Slash’s guitar playing on this. I never really thought the gunners were that good so never thought about listening to any of their stuff other than the hits. Stoked I gave this a chance, great listen

I... like... Guns N' Roses? Huh.

Who am I?

still somehow know all the words to this album, the production sounds like shit but the song writing endures. good shit!!!

Almost an impossible album to rate. Because when you look at what's it's trying to be, it's flawless: it's an extordinarily fun album with slash riffs and axl rose screams all over the place that never seem to get old, despite how much they're used. It's not trying to be anything super complex lyrically or musically, and I have a lot of respect in that; knowing what you are and executing it flawlessly is always admirable. But at the same time, it doesn't really move me in any way. And certainly not all music does or even should. But for those reasons, it just can't get into the range, no matter how spectacular it is. It's physically impossible for this album. So while it's never going to make any all time lists for me, the respect I have for this album is incredibly high. Say what you will about GNR as people, as musicians, to not respect them to the highest degree shows more about any listener than it ever will about the band. Best: Paradise City Worst: Out ta get me Liked songs: 12/12, 100% High 4

Maybe it’s MTV. Maybe it’s the fact that I was basically a child when Sweet Child O’ Mine started to get played and covered and played and covered and played and covered… well, it’s happening still. But I was tempted to give this a 5. I mean, despite the fact that I thought the band as they appeared in their music videos were almost a parody of themselves when I was in middle school, this album ROCKS. If it didn’t let up at the end, I would have given it a 5. The crazy thing is, despite knowing almost every track, I don’t think I have ever listened to the album. I know my brother had it. But since I have a pussy, am not looking for pussy, and certainly not looking for dudes who look like or proclaim the sentiments of this band, it makes sense that it would take almost 40 (!) years for me to listen to it. 4 SOLID Boolean: yes, absolutely glad to have heard before I die

One hit wonder, but quite the hit

I really enjoyed this album! Four stars.

Hard hitting rock album full of energy. The guitar work is a highlight, heavy on the riffs and guitar solos! Well put together album from start to finish, overall quality makes it a stand out. I'm not much of a rock fan but still really enjoyed listening to it.

Onhan tää nyt ikoninen rokkialbumi, monet biisit olin toki aiemmin kuullut jo.

Been years since I listened to this straight through. Great rocking, and Slash can really bring it. Too bad Axl couldn’t keep it together long enough to have a longer career with these guys.

muy volver a los 13 años

It's sleazy, and over the top, but it's a brilliant album which is packed full of memorable rock n roll bombast. Killer riffs, melodic solos and ridiculous hair metal vocals. Perfect singalong with your hairbrush and air guitar stuff.

Yes. Enjoyed this album.

What a throwback! Also one of the most insane debuts of any rock band out there. It was cool listening all the way through. There are some more plain tracks in between the songs I’ve heard hundreds of thousands of times on the radio. They had a very solid style that holds up in the vocal performance and instrumentals. The lyrics fit in with the unironic mentality of sex, drugs, and rock n roll; but nothing really unexpected. It still holds up, even though I personally prefer the dramatic, piano-driven ballads on Use Your Illusion I and II. We get a taste of that on Think About You with the acoustic guitar during the chorus (shout out Izzy). It’s unfortunate that they had something special for these first three albums before crashing and burning (at least in the studio). It’s still a fun nostalgia trip. Favorite track: Think About You

Surprised with how much I enjoyed this, especially with Axl’s reputation… Obviously heard the hits but songs like Mr Brownstone were great.

Me gustaron varias pero no todas

Late 80s hard rock. Debut. Needed to tour to get album sales. One of best-selling albums. Insane vocals.

Half the album is as 5 star as it gets. Half the album is not really all that good so it ends up at a 4. When they were clicking there was not a better band

Hell yea Remember this reasonably well from the AM top 100. The three classic GNR songs off this obvs slap but there’s a bunch of other great tracks here too

Still a great album but a lot of the lyrics are so bad. Like if you gave a 14 year old child permission to write edgy lyrics.

Obviously there are some incredibly famous songs on this album (for good reason), but even the songs I had never heard of had a unique and captivating sound. Really good stuff.

It's interesting, and one wonders if it's intentional, how GnR start their huge debut with a guitar riff that could be Roth era Van Halen, before completely destroying the entirety of that style, both in the album AND in popular culture. The hair metal boys always blame Kurt Cobain for destroying them, but come on, that was just the nail in the coffin. Axl and Slash drew first blood, and if it wasn't for Axl himself, they would have likely stayed just as huge through the grunge era. The Use Your Illusion albums were bloated, but they were also huge. But today is about Appetite. And let's be real, I've never been a huge GnR fan, because even while burying hair metal, this is still over the top, often cheesy cock rock. Rose's voice easily slips between iconic and annoying. The songs that didn't get on the radio often feel like filler in a very real way. But so so much of this album was on rock radio. Like, enough of it that it's easy to forget how many were on this one album, and there is enough nostalgia to carry the day, whether that nostalgia comes from the impeccable tone of Sweet Child o Mine, or the supremely relatable “I get up around 7, get outta bed around 9,” the over the top theatrics of Welcome to the Jungle or that big sinister main riff in My Michelle. Whether intentional or not, the album middle-loads. The first song is huge, but you get three more bangers right in the center, and of course by the time Sweet Child comes in, with that riff that everyone but Slash loves and that iconic bass creeping up under it, you're almost done. Sure, there's a gap between the best stuff and the rest, but the album is balanced enough that it never really feels like a slog to cross those gaps. Realistically, this is another imperfect mid 80s metal album, but it still is leaps and bounds ahead of its peers. It's more adept, it's rougher around the edges (and edgier, at that), it feels aesthetically so different from its milieu. It's a different sort of 4* compared to most of what has gotten that, and it's probably lightly so, but it does what it aims to do.

The only thing stopping this from being a 5 is the fact that some of the songs have been overplayed to death.

Yeah this is a killer album. The pure energy is fantastic and there are some top tier tracks on this one. No wonder this album is so recognized. By the end I did sort of get tired of his voice unfortunately but that's just me. Favourites: Out Ta Get Me Paradise City Sweet Child O' Mine

CLASSIC im a rocker boy at heart so im excited for the legendary album Welcome to the Jungle (what i bop to kick off an album with) Paradise City Sweet Child O Mine This album is WEIRD. Its like it only exists for the popular songs. Like every other song is generic rock noise and then it leads into the popular songs. The prime example of this is Think about you into sweet child o mine. Think about you is rock song 9186 and then is leads it a song that is entirely unique and refined in its sound that is stands completely out, and then it leads back into generic. Imma give this a 4, bc legendary but there is plenty of forgettable, but it is alot better than many of the 3s ive rated

Again, for the culture

So many bangers.. Hate Axel but his voice in this is classic..

Appetite For Destruction came out when I was 3 so it's been with me my whole life. It has some absolute bangers and then some very weak filler tracks.

I haven’t listened to this since I was a teenager and I really think it holds up. A little too polished but that was the 80s.

This album is fucking awesome.

A decent debut from Axl, Slash and co. Sweet Child O' Mine contains one of those iconic guitar riff, pretty much to the point where I can remember where I was the first time that I heard it. It introduced a band that was rawer and harder than the hair rock of Bon Jovi and Whitesnake, but still accessible enough to the mainstream that they were going to get the airplay to make them massive. The four singles on here have been listened to many times, but the standard remains high on the tracks not trusted with chart airplay. Out Ta Get Me and Think About You are high quality tracks, and I love how Rocket Queen changes half way through to bring the album to a fitting end. There are a few tracks I'm not too fussed about - You're Crazy doesn't do anything for me and It's So Easy is so different from it's original that it doesn't sound like a Guns n Roses song either! But there's enough meaty tracks here to post 4 solid stars on this album.

Actually not my taste, but I can't get away from it. This does seem like one of the best albums in this genre.

So this one came out my last year of high school. It kind of sticks for that reason. I turned up the house stereo and enjoyed the jams, but it’s not an album in my rotation. I added Mr Brownstone to my playlist. 4 for nostalgia.

Such a grimy record. I don’t think I have ever listened to it all the way through and just knew the hits. Classic and mildly cringy.

I see why they’re so fuckng famous. Good album! Vocalist was annoying at first but he fits the vibe weirdly. 4.5/5

WELCOME TO THE JUNGLEEE

Welcome To The Jungle: 8/10. fire ass opening, not in love with the adlibs though It's So Easy: 7/10. solid but i wouldn't voluntarily choose to listen to it Nightrain: 8/10. gasa Out Ta Get Me: 6/10. musically good but i'm not fond of the lyrics at all Mr. Brownstone: 8/10. quite good Paradise City: 9/10. so far the best one i believe. though it's quite long My Michelle: 9/10. WHAT am i listening to!!! Think About You: 8/10. nice but not extraordinary Sweet Child O' Mine: 10/10. besides from the fact that the intro gives me literal flashbacks, it's an absolute bop You're Crazy: 6/10. while it is definitely musically satisfying, i also don't understand anymore what i'm listening to, but it may as well be the fact that it's almost 11pm... idk it seems a bit overwhelming Anything Goes: 8/10. gasa + chill at the same time Rocket Queen: 8/10 i feel like i'm ascending to heaven lowkey

It is a good album, but I would not call it great. There are some classic songs on there, just not a great album from front to back. 7.75/10 Top song Paradise city

Wasn't sure at first but then I pretended it was Slade and really enjoyed it 🙂

You know what, this was a genuinely rip roarin good time.

Great! Definitely not my thing but lots of classics from my childhood

Who have I become now that I enjoy GNR?

It’s a very fun album. Every member has clear talent and the songs are very well written. As overplayed as many of these songs are, they aren’t ruined for me personally, though maybe that’s because I’ve only been alive a little more than a third of the time this album has existed. I think Sweet Child o’ Mine is one of the best songs of the 80s, but the songs between it and Rocket Queen create a bit of a slump for me. Speaking of which, Rocket Queen is a pretty good cut off the album, but I can’t listen to the moaning part. This is a personal thing, but I used to immediately turn off a song if it included moaning because it made me viscerally uncomfortable. I got over that because I realized that it was just going into the studio and making weird noises at a microphone, but knowing what was happening in the studio for that song just makes it impossible for me. 4/5

A few masterpieces on here, a couple songs sounded a tad repetitive though. That being said great album especially in regards to the guitar hooks and iconic vocals.

first time listening I enjoyed this album! I found Axl Rose’s vocals very weird and awesome. probably one of the beat classic rock n roll albums i can think of. 8/10 enjoyment ranking

Rated this at the time. A great debut and something a bit different in the heavy/metal genre. Some big tunes if the odd track has become a bit cringe. 4.5/5.

This was great I didn’t like all the songs but it was very good and I have been putting off listening to guns and roses so thank god I did this was great

It’s icon selection of rock songs probably won’t be beat

this has bangers but it’s a little overrated

I stayed in a place in Costa Rica that was legit in the jungle. The whole time staying there I had Welcome To The Jungle in my head. As I listened to the massive sound of the jungle itself with its symphony of noise emanating from creatures everywhere, I realized the sounds Axl makes sound like actual jungle sounds. Since then, I've wondered if this is what Axl was actually going for. Welcome To The Jungle in part legit sounds like the jungle, which is badass. It's So Easy is perfect GnR and does everything they do best. And this came out when "the F word" really struck and meant something, so the "it's so easy, so fucking easy" portion brings a certain excitement whenever I hear it like when I was a kid in the 80s hearing cuss words in music and being totally awed. My Michelle is another perfect GnR song. Sweet Child is also perfect GnR even after hearing it 4.9 billion times. Shit, Mr. Brownstone is damn-near perfect GnR as well. Rocket Queen is an excellent closer for the album. Some tracks are more typical of hard rock of the era, like Nightrain, Out To Get Me (though still pretty great), Think About You, Anything Goes all fit in with other stuff happening when this came out and are generally passable. But each of the other tracks puncture through the noise. Even Paradise City, with its white trash-ass chorus, sounds bigger and brighter and more charged than anything else at the time. I can't hear this album without shit loads of nostalgia. I love listening to it and it still does a lot for me, but I can't tell you if it's, like, actually overall good or not. If you were there, you probably have at least some fondness for it if not love it, but it you weren't, ehhh maybe not so much.

1. "Sweet Child o' Mine" 2. "Nightrain" 3. "Welcome to the Jungle"

A classic hard rock album. Well produced.

A classic of Hard Rock. First half of the album is all bangers. Second half has Sweet Child and Rocket Queen. Other than those the second half is nowhere near as good as first

It wouldn't be a four if it weren't for the bangers. There are so many on here, but the filler does grind a bit.

Sólido álbum debut, no es mi estilo.

A perfect encapsulation of rock and roll attitude. Lightning in a bottle. This album just has so much energy, and intensity. Wild abandon? It isn't pure chaos, but it is music on the edge of breakup and that's very exciting to hear. It's hard for me to hear Axl singing here without picturing him as a leering, eyes-bulging cartoon wolf. GNR is what happens when you take the excess and attitude of 70s Aerosmith to its logical conclusion. And it is gloriously unhinged. FOUR STARS

This was much more fun than I want to admit to. I think it all boils down to "this sucks" with a smile on my face

Hmm...Which way should I go on this one? We've got 3 all time classics, a few total duds, and a couple alright to good tracks. I guess we're going 3.5 rounded to 4 because of how great those 3 tracks are, but nobody would fault you for going to 3

Hair Metal/Cock Rock are amongst my very least favourite genres but luckily this album is so far above the rest of that pack it just about transcends it, becoming instead just a very good rock album. Kind of glam, kind of punk, full of far too much confidence and machismo but overflowing with riffs and attitude and it quality. Lightning in a bottle that was never recaptured.

Ein sehr gutes album. Meine standouts : Welcome to the jungle Nightrain Mr Brownstone Paradise City Sweet Child of Mine

I mean you just can’t go wrong with some banger guitar riffs

good to discover guns’ songs that i’ve never heard to even though this album contains 3 big hits from the band good album but i aspected more

Who doesn’t know at least one song from this album? Such a cool album, but maybe I’ve heard the songs too much

More like Bums N’ Hoses. BANGER AFTER BANGER. So good.

Album #79, Guns N’ Roses, Appetite for Destruction, ⭐⭐⭐⭐ As most young boys who loved hard rock, I loved this album. It was probably one of my first real musical obsessions. They were singing about sex and drugs and using curse words, so what wasn’t to love at that age? And at the time, they felt properly heavy. I hadn’t really gone back to it in years, so I was curious to see how it would hold up. It’s a great record, it really is. The riffs are brilliant. It’s very hooky throughout, especially the singles, which are all iconic. There are a few forgettable tracks like “Out to Get Me”, which I think is poor, and “Anything Goes” doesn’t do much for me either. I also think the chorus of “My Michelle” is a bit weak. But everything else is pretty great. The two stars of the show are obviously Slash and Axl Rose. Slash’s guitar playing is just incredible. I don’t know much about the technical side of guitar, but it sounds so precise and powerful. But the real standout is Axl Rose. His voice is unbelievable. He has to be one of the best singers of his generation. The range, the control, the multiple voices, it’s all there. Some things haven’t aged well, though. On one hand, I do think the lyrics are strong in terms of storytelling. There are loads of little vignettes about down and out characters and addicts. That side of it works really well. But it’s hard not to take some of the misogyny at face value. Unlike the Slim Shady LP, which I reviewed yesterday, where it clearly feels like a character, here it feels more like this is genuinely coming from Axl Rose. That does leave a bit of a bad taste. Also, “Rocket Queen” is one of the best songs on the album, but that sex scene in the middle is just cringey and creepy and has aged terribly. It kind of ruins what is otherwise a brilliant track. The best song on the album is “Sweet Child O’ Mine.” It’s a bit of an outlier compared to the rest of the record, but it might just be the perfect rock song. The riff, the solo, the melody, the vocals, everything is absolutely spot on. I don’t find it cheesy at all, it’s just a genuinely great love song, even if it feels a bit at odds with the rest of the lyrics on the album. Was great to revisit it!

Absolute banger, if you love wailing guitars you will love this album.

Solid rock album with a good mix of hits

A really fantastic album, but there are a few low spots that keep me from personally giving it 5. It’s a 4.5 still to me.

Oh the flashbacks.

It has the hits. I’ll give a 3.5 in reality.

Paradise City...Welcome to the Jungle...Sweet Child of Mine. Those are three monster tracks to have on the same album. The rest ain't half bad either.

Great melodies, great energy, the lyrics are absolute garbage and we all found Axl's twee vocal tricks ridiculous even at the time. It'll be in permanent rotation on radio until the end of time for all the wrong reasons. I'd erase every copy of Sweet Child O Mine before getting rid of Mr. Brownstone.

overrated

i have the poster on my wall

Good if you like/aren’t sick of hearing Sweet Child O’ Mine.

jujuuuuu discado!!! 4/5 "you're crazy" es mi canción favorita

No. 388/1001 Welcome To The Jungle 4/5 It's So Easy 3/5 Nightrain 4/5 Out Ta Get Me 4/5 Mr. Brownstone 3/5 Paradise City 4/5 My Michelle 3/5 Think About You 4/5 Sweet Child O‘ Mine 5/5 You're Crazy 3/5 Anything Goes 3/5 Rocket Queen 4/5 Average: 3,67 Good listen.

Dig it, know 3 songs well, all good

I thought it was OK. Sweet Child O Mine, Welcome to the Jungle, Rocket Queen, Paradise City, Mr. Brownstone, and Its so Easy were the only good songs on it. Overall, I would give this album a 3.6/5!

I initially thought that this one was a classic 5*, but as i listened through I realized how tiresome Axl Rose’s voice is. Slash’s excellent guitar riffs carries a lot of the music. There are many great songs, but also a few overplayed ones. Favourites: Sweet Child Of Mine, Mr Brownstone, Rocket Queen, Nighttrain.

Basically a Greatest Hits compilation as a debut album.

Pretty solid hard rock album. I've been finding that most debut albums are pretty average, but this was a really great debut. Fun.

I usually hate this type of shit but I am always presently surprised how well this album holds up. While there are some lyrical low points like on It's So Easy, it never musically lets up. Axl Rose might be an asshole but he has the perfect voice for this type of music too.

Certified bangers, I can’t rate it a five because sometimes his voice is grating, but the hits are absolute hits.

Transformative rock… really enjoyed all the way through. 4.1

It’s insane that this was a debut album. So many hits that remain in constant rotation even today. And the album does rock. I have to admit, though, that Axl Rose’s singing grates on me after awhile. 8/10 Most Excellent

4/5 - Strange rating for this one because every song individually is fantastic, but Axl Rose's voice becomes too grating over a full album's length for me.

Fire album loved it

Welcome to the Jungle is one of the greatest opening tracks to any album, ever. Perfect guitar playing and an awesome energetic song. The rest of the album, sadly, doesn't really match the opener. I find Sweet Child O' Mine to be a mostly overrated song with a kickass riff. But this album also has Paradise City on it, which guarantees it at least a 4 out 5.

Great debut album from GnR

Before listening: I don't know much about Guns' N Roses other than that they're a rock band. I'm more excited to listen to this one. I always get bored halfway through listening to albums...I liked the two first songs. Overall, good album, fun sound, gets a bit repetitive. Songs saved: My Michelle, Sweet Child O'Mine 3.5/5

Some lyrics are flat out abhorrent, but for pure rock n roll and some catchy tunes it’s a four. Slash and Axl Tose individually kick ass.

You're in the Jungle, Baaaby!

I spent most of this waiting for the big singles but boy did they deliver. Guns N’ Roses will always remind me of my mate who passed away last year. He was a huge fan and saw them with his dad 10ish years ago. RIP Milan x

Hard rock. Some classics but the singer’s voice grates on my ears after a while.

Weird one this for me as the band is not really my type of thing as i think they are pretty corny.. ...But this is a cool and great album to be fair to them. For a debut too its tight as fuck with banger after banger on it.

Anthem after anthem. I prefer the Use Your Illusions tbh But you cant argue its a monster of a debut. Should be part of every lad's music education.

Good album that. I know people will hate it because the singles are over played but it’s great to bang on

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN CHA! It was exciting until I remembered I can't stand Axel Rose's voice and I don't want this in any of my personal playlists. Still, it's got some great songs and it made quite the impression on 10-year-old me back in the day so I'll give it a 4. Mr. Brownstone is my favorite song on this album.

Aside from the 3 big hitters, this is such a strong album. Think About You, Nightrain, My Michelle and You're Crazy are all bangers. Really enjoyed this, right up my street. Slash is a God.

Just classic after classic throughout this.

More songs than I expected though were kinda simple/repetitive. But obviously a lot of classic songs, and incredible guitar!

Absolutely classic

Great album! I was rocking out while taking my mandatory corporate compliance courses. Of course, Sweet Child O’ Mine and Paradise City were favorites, but I also really enjoyed Nightrain and My Michelle.

The singles are classic but the non-singles haven't aged too well. Kind of a country twang to wild whooping on vocals. He does the falsetto for a full concert? So hard on the voice. Still, it does have the edge if you squint hard enough.

classic

Great opener. Love the rhythm, the energy and power. Throughout the album, there’s a lot of background instruments that are unique to me, and they really enrich the sound. The lyrics are clear and well written. There is a lovely blend of “catchy singalong” lyrics and deep, emotional storytelling. I’m surprised that I’ve slept on this album for so long.

Definitely an album that has marked a generation with some of their greatest hits ever recorded; utterly enjoyed it ❣️

Love a cheeky bit of guns n roses this one has all the famous songs

Like everyone, I have heard the singles from this album too much. I have never listened to this album front to back until this list. This is a solid rock album. I forgot this was their debut. That makes it all the more impressive.

Favourite tracks: It's So Easy, My Michelle, Think About You, Rocket Queen Don't think there's a single *bad* song on here. Sure there are some tracks that don't hit as hard as others but I can sit down and listen to it all in one go without feeling fatigued. Great riffs, great vocals, and great energy. I normally dislike older rock records but this still holds up in this day and age. 4/5

I’m familiar with a few songs on this album already. I will always love Welcome to the Jungle!!

This was my friends father's favorite band. He took his life when she was 12 so it was never fun to listen to, more mournful. This is the first time I am listening to a full album. Lots of classics. His voice is a bit grating.

Really good album, realizing that I only really know 3-4 songs on it . There are a few less than great songs on it—-but the good ones are phenomenal

This album was great when I first heard it when I was 10 in Eric Brown's basement and it's still great now.

It's a classic with some legendary songs on it but has it aged well?

Super solid. Splash is well-known for a reason and Axl Rose has quite a powerful, distinctive voice. I didn’t realize that “Welcome to the Jungle”, “Sweet Child O’ Mine”, and “Paradise City” all came from this same debut album.

I think this could be the greatest hard rock album of all time, or at least the greatest hard rock side A of all time. Seriously flawless musically, all loose Stonesy punk rock without the multimillion dollar production values, pretension and over-long ballads that would come after (although i do have a soft spot for that too, to be fair). Side B drops the ball just a tad - Think About You and Anything Goes are both pop metal by numbers. But followed up with Rocket Queen, that's forgivable. Dropped a star only for the cluelessly casual misogyny, which is beyond Spinal Tap proportions.

A very solid album, and even more so with this being their first. But you can't go anywhere without hearing one of these on the radio, so it was quite tiresome. Should probably be a 5, but Sweet Child annoys the hell out of me

Singles were very good, rest of the album a bit meh

This album has so many hits. A classic.

There are some songs that I already knew but I wouldn't say any of the other songs that I didn't know were that memorable. All songs sounds a bit same-ish

Noisy, blustery and fast. Sweet child of mine sticks out compared to the pace of the other album bits. Angry, mighty and a punky album for a Monday. Welcome to the Jungle the pref.

Buen album.

Three epic hits, one decent hit and then some decent hard rock songs that verge on filler. These three hits take this to what otherwise might be a 3, but I'll give it a 4.

Here’s my take: “Sweet Child O’ Mine” is one of the greatest rock songs of the 80s, and “Welcome to the Jungle” is a 10/10 introduction to a band. Beyond that, the album is fine, but fairly run-of-the-mill Van Halen-styled heavy metal. Yet those two tracks buoy the rest of the album, deservedly so.

Classic 90s hair metal

Fun album

8.5/10

Three iconic so gs

Exceptional album, so close to being a 5 but just not quite for me

Slash really is one of the guitar greats, the man brings a flawless performance on all of these tracks (even the slightly duff ones) and Axl does the screechy screeches very well - it’s just a shame he doesn’t use his more mellow tone to full effect until the next couple of albums. So many classic tracks that it’s hard to know where to begin. Rocket Queen, Nightrain and Mr Brownstone all excel… and then there’s (in my opinion) one of the best album openers on a rock record in the form of Welcome To The Jungle. I will say though, Appetite For Destruction has become a victim of its own success. Constant radio play has eroded a lot of these tracks and I even find Sweet Child O’ Mine grating whenever it first comes on, only warming to it again by the time the second verse kicks around. This - and the lack of musical variety which is admittedly a personal preference - is the main reason why a full listen of AFD is a bit draining in parts where even a lot of double albums aren’t, but still a great time when all’s said and done.

An album full of high energy hard rock tracks. I've heard Welcome to the Jungle, Paradise City and Sweet Child O' Mine a million times each and even though I wouldn't go out of my way to listen to them more they are pretty good. Mr Brownstone and Nightrain were the best of the tracks I wasn't familiar with. Overall I find the tracks a bit simple (except for the guitar solos) and even though it's a fun listen it doesn't quite click with me.

Zone out more in the 1st half of the album than 2nd half. Good music to listen to while puzzling.

Classic

This album is annoying. The singles (Jungle/Paradise/Sweet Child) are soooo gooood and really timeless. The rest is so meh. As an album probably a two, for the singles it’s a five, average out and round up to four.

#37/1001 🇺🇸 It's hard to believe a band could appear on the scene so fully formed with album that still stands the test of time now. Hearing this at 12 yrs old shone a light on so much musically for me. Ok it could have been the swearing and the recording of Axl having sex with a groupie in Rocket Queen. Listening now there is a lot that doesnt sit right in some of the mysoginistic lyrics but there are some amazing songs here. Best tracks: Its So Easy, Mr Brownstone, Welcome to the Jungle.
