Reviews (page 7 of 14)

A miracle of a debut album. How do you put together a bunch of songs that are best suited to getting an entire arena jumping before anyone knows who you are? It's almost incomprehensible to think that there was a world before Sweet Child O'Mine or Welcome to the Jungle. Etc. Only reason to keep it out of 5 stars is that I personally find it a bit boring, but that’s probably just that it’s so familiar.

Sometimes albums I have a long history with seem to be the hardest reviews to write for some reason. That is the case with Appetite For Destruction by Guns N Roses. This album has been in my life in some capacity since I was fourteen years old. My high school years would’ve been prime GNR time. This album was just different from the other hair metal out at the time. More raw and dangerous even. Dangerous sounding for a teen. However, even all these years later, I think Appetite for Destruction holds up for the most part. Yes, I have some issues with lyrical content. Specifically, the misogyny. Do I listen to this regularly? Not really. I’ll take songs from it for sure but a full play doesn’t happen a lot. I still think it was an important album at the time and giving this a good 4 rating seems right. 4/5

Classic. -"Welcome to the Jungle" isn't as heavy as I remember? Seems real pushed on high and mid-high frequencies? -"It's So Easy" is heavier than I remember. -"Nightrain" and "Out ta Get Me" feel pretty mid. -"Mr. Brownstown" sounds like Jack Black doing a GnR impression. "Yowza!" -"Paradise City" and "Sweet Child O Mine" still slap. -"My Michelle" is a sick riff. This might be the forgotten sleeper banger. The chorus isn't as good as the verse but not bad at all. -"Think About You" is mid but has a funny little jangly The Cure guitar part in the middle. -The final 3 tracks -- "You're Crazy", "Anything Goes", "Rocket Queen" -- are all fine. One thing I realize after listening to this again: the lyrics and vocals are my least favorite part. An instrumental version of this album would be super cool.

A classic. Only brought down by a couple of weaker tracks, this in reality should have been an absolute rager of a 10-track album. But the good tracks are outright fantastic classics so it's a nitpick.

I'm by no means a huge GnR fan, but this debut album by them is iconic. Welcome To The Jungle, Mr. Brownstone, Paradise City, My Michelle, Sweet Child O' Mine, etc.. The energy, attitude, and bravado are on full display.

There are a bunch of tracks on this that are all-timers. But, this is a lot to take in one sitting.

It's good! It's consistent, it's more than just the hits. I was really surprised by how much I enjoyed it but the second side holds it back just a bit.

High-energy, classic and fun. I liked it, will listen again

This album is solid with a strong concept from beginning to end. I could do without hearing Axl engaging in actual or simulated coitus on the last two tracks, but I guess that fits well with the theme.

Not as different to 80s hair metal as music historians would like us to believe, but if all of those other bands had the ears of Duff, Izzy, Adler and Slash then the 90s would have been a very different time.

Some good songs, but feels old

Really more like a 3.5 that I rounded up for nostalgia sake. A lot more bland songs mixed in than I remember, Mr brownstone and my Michelle were ones I forgot about that I underrated.

Classic for a reason. I didn't know the song "My Michelle" and will have to bring that up to the Michelle I know. This album was ahead of its time and maintains its relevancy, energy, and overall vibes well into this century. I would enjoy having this on vinyl or something. I'm not sure how often I would listen to it though, even just on Spotify. You just can't be mad when this is on though. Another thing I enjoy about this album is that they are clearly very sexual but they're not like rape-y which unfortunately a lot of older bands and artists can appear as or just some things don't age. I don't find this overall cringey or anything.

Classic album. But if I never hear "Welcome to the jungle", "Paradise City" & "Sweet Child O'Mine" ever again I will be a happy man.

OK, all these years later, I can see how a lot of this is problematic. And, really, I could see it back then too. But it still friggin' rocks.

ROCK N ROLLLLL

Classic album, classic band. Can't go wrong listening to this.

A solid rock album with some of Guns N’ Roses’s best songs featured! I enjoyed this album and would recommend it to others!

This is one of those albums where even if you're sick of every song you can't deny it crushed it for what it was trying to do. The fact that it's a debut album is wild. If this was all that music was people would like it but it wouldn't be much of an art form. Doesn't change the fact that this is the top of this specific game. Not every song hits but the ones that do put a floor on how low I can rate this.

Another one that is so woven into the fabric of this reality that it makes it difficult to review. Has some obviously standout melodies and riffs. Lyrically not the strongest always. The big ones work. The start of Welcome to the Jungle and Sweet Child of Mine hook you. The other tracks get kind of carried by Slash and some just barely. I get a little exhausted by the end of this. It checks a lot of boxes as far as being a cohesive album with a certain level of quality. I could see this being a 5 for some not me

Being a rock album, not bad. Enjoyable

Surprised by Axl’s vocal range. Not my favourite - may have to listen again sometime to enjoy it more.

Mixed feelings of having seen my friends and myself to some degree shaped by this music, as it has become some of the most iconic music in the world, and recognising how brash and vapid it sounds to widened ears. Slash is good though.

I decided to give this a listen, and it felt like a breath of fresh air. I try my hardest to listen to every single album on this generator, but some of these albums I've heard so many times over the years that I thought there was nothing left to get out of them. I assumed this would be one of them. However, I decided to play it on my way to work, and since it had been so long since I last heard these songs, I actually enjoyed them just as I did back in the 90s when I was a kid, hearing this stuff when it was new and fresh.

Very similar vibe throughout the whole album. Some songs are certified classics.

Solid.

Kurt Cobain once said that his band was "not your typical Guns N' Roses type of band that has absolutely nothing to say." He isn't wrong, but there is a reason why this is the best selling debut album of all time. Superficial fun often beats thought provoking. I for one could use a little fun these days.

I know this album is quite saucy for when it came out, though it sounds not edgy at all now. What I find good about it is actually the musicality to bring to it--many of these sort of 'heavy metal' bands tend to have a way higher music theory knowledge than some other genres. So I tend to still have a lot of fun with it, even if there wasn't anything about the whole album that was inherently gripping for me. Maybe some of it is just playing guitar hero too much in middle school lol

Crazy guitar solos

I was very sceptical at the beginning but it's been so much fun! IT must have been great partying to this in late 1980s. Welcome to the Jungle and Sweet Child O'Mine are clearly the big hits and deservedly so (the latter is just incredible towards the end). There are some unintentionally funny/cringe parts with all the machismo (the unexpected whistle on Paradise City gets me every time) and the lyrics with vocals are probably the most annoying parts of the whole thing. But, the musicianship is great and tight and its just pure fun to listen to it. recommended for a heavy workout!

Overall super solid but not my brand.

This thing absolutely cooks start to finish

Absolute classic

Still electric after 35 years to hear that riff open the album. These guys ruled the world for a few months and got out just before Nirvana extinguished them. It’s easy to forget how fucking huge they were. Then they (Axl) got weird and stupid, like so many bands do, but you just need one classic album to live forever.

Not a huge amount to say. Top class debut for the last of the US Hair-metal bands. What is it about US rock bands that most of the debuts are already the complete article? Was there never anything to improve or are they all manufactured? Anyway this isn't meant to be critical, it's a great album. 4½

Listened to this one dozens of times over the years. A very solid album - probably the best of the “sleaze-rock” albums - falling somewhere between the glam-hair metal and thrash coming out in the mid 80’s. And it’s definitely sleazy. Ranks up there as one of the best debuts of all time (hit singles, sales). Sure, a couple of made for radio hits but also some deep cut bangers. Every song is solid. No filler.

I wanted to hate this I really did. Between the album cover keeping top shop afloat for a decade or the big 3 songs making GNR the Coldplay of 1987 I had judged this album being it even started. I actually enjoyed it. There I said it. I wouldn't listen again but it's a high 4.

Your in the jungle baby !!

Hard to review this because the best songs (Jungle, Paradise City, Sweet Child) are all songs I'm now, at 35, very sick of. But if I were hearing them the first time right now though I'd be blown away. Problem is the other songs are almost all filler. I can only rank this based on how I remember feeling one time, probably around 17 or 18 (perfect age for GnR) blasting 'Paradise City' alone in my car as loud as it could go and feeling invincible. Three 5 star songs and the rest are 2s and 3s. Rounding up to 4 because i like to rock.

The hits are super fun - as is Rocket Queen - but the rest doesn't really do much for me. I find Axl's vocals a little annoying. Somewhere between 3 and 4 stars on this. Might need to go listen to some Maiden.

People talk a lot of shit about Guns N' Roses but it's undeniable; love them or hate them, they're juggernauts of the genre. This is their debut album and what a debut album it is. I'm not a great lover of glam rock but this is just a riotous good time from start to finish. That guitar intro on Welcome to the Jungle is on a whole other level. Of course, with songs like Paradise City and Sweet Child O' Mine, this is a fully loaded album, chock full of hits. The opening and closing songs hold together a consistent sound that is both timeless and boisterous, a classic rock and roll album. There are songs on here that will always be a favourite.

Hits in hits, sexual tension, talented hair metal. The only downside is the fact that this spawned butt rock.

The original cover for the album was abysmal - those shit cartoon affairs that you find on the likes of Iron Maiden or Megadeth albums, announcing the arrival of tedious soft rock masquerading as hard rock. Thankfully it was quickly changed for the iconic cover. But that's quite a fitting turn of events - because half of this would fit on the hellish cartoon album of dull rock platitudes; and the other half fits the iconic rock cover. I suppose that balances to a three - but the rock juggernauts, Welcome to the Jungle, Paradise City and Sweet Child, are so iconic this does scrape a four.

I knew a few songs on this album already, I actually enjoyed the whole album

Surprised by this. I expected more junk nostalgia mix, as I’ve come to expect from the list. What I forgot was that these guys are nerds for music theory and technique, and that makes the best rock/metal. Good stuff

Most of these loved-by-old-people rock albums leave a sour taste in my mouth but the metal mixed into this really made this quite good. I’ve never really given GnR a chance and was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked it. Kudos to them as well for the self control with the guitar solos

Great classic hard rock. Obviously some massive hits on this one. The rest of the songs were solid but didn't really stand out. Favorites: Welcome to the Jungle, Paradise City, Sweet Child O' Mine

This album was massive for me as a kid trying to piss off my parents. I still revisit this album, but I skip Welcome to the Jungle, Paradise City, and Sweet Child of Mine every time. I hit my limit years ago. Beside’s Dale’s brother’s family sings it much better than Axl, albeit a bit flat. Nighttrain is my favorite song.

With the opening guitar riffs of "Welcome To The Jungle". Guns N' Roses ushered in the decline of 80s Glam Hair Metal Rock. The carefree celebration of rock 'n roll, filled with partying, sex, and drugs, was fading into the background. And it was being replaced with a primal, raw, gritty, and aggressive sound, reminiscent of early Aerosmith or AC/DC. Themes of decaying urban landscapes ("Welcome To The Jungle"), searching for an escape ("Paradise City"), and heroin addiction ("Mr. Brownstone") are central to the album. While thematically, it may not be groundbreaking, its lyrical and sonic qualities are unique. Axel Rose sang about fears and darkness, with an underlying vulnerability ("Sweet Child O' Mine."), wrapped in wailing high pitched anger. His distinctive voice is supported by the dynamic interplay of Slash and Izzy Stradlin harmonizing guitar riffs and solos. This album was released during my high school graduation year, and I clearly recall how it cut through the crowded pop music top-40 on the radio, being enthusiastically embraced by nearly everyone. At that time, I had no concept of the lasting influence this album would have. And while songs you've heard on the radio were played ad nauseum, they still stand the test of time. Most of the deeper cuts are also strong and still relevant, too.

Solid 80s rock 🎸

Massively influential in bringing heavier music to a wider audience, it's just hard listening nowadays because of how massively overplayed this album is. Mr. Brownstone still goes hard, though.

Quintessential Jawn

Extremely overplayed, but classic

Love my classic jams

classic

20/1089 - I liked this more than I thought I would. Chromatic riffs were cool and the backing instrumentals had a great sense pocket. Wasn't a fan of the sex moans/noises or Axl's lower range. I really liked "Think About You." The new-wave-y chorus guitar on that one is a great sound.

Great album - though this may be the first time I'm listening to it all the way through, I definitely just listen to the hits. It's such a solid rock mood booster album. Great to listen to in the background as well.

One of my favorite “hair metal” albums. In a genre where most of it is complete crap, the guitar work and vocals here really shine and never really seemed as “corny” as a Bon Jovi or a Def Leppard. Best songs here are Nightrain, Mr Brownstone, Paradise City, Sweet Child O Mine, and Rocket Queen.

Can I just listen to Sweet Child O’ Mine 12 times in a row? No? Okay, this will have to do.

Actually good.

A rock classic

very cool, my mums fav band!

This was my chill out record in the late 80's, in between all that thrash and death metal, which I find hilarious. I know this album quite well, only Lies EP exceeds the amount of listens this has had. I forgot how laid back rock 'n roll this actually is. The lyrical themes are all drugs, booze and debauchery, but the music is just rock 'n roll. Having just read Sami Yaffa's memoirs, I can understand what he is talking about when he mentions G'n'R.

Excellent album that I listened to when I was growing up. A lot of great songs and Sweet Child O Mine is still great even though I have heard it a million times. This album really rocks but has a few lame outliers in my opinion.

Welcome To The Jungle - 5/5 It's So Easy - 4/5 Nightrain - 4/5 Out Ta Get Me - 4/5 Mr. Brownstone - 5/5 Paradise City - 5/5 My Michelle - 5/5 Think About You - 4/5 Sweet Child O' Mine - 5/5 You're Crazy - 4/5 Anything Goes - 3/5 Rocket Queen - 4/5 Total score: 4.3/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Hanoi Rocks walked so GnR could run

My kinda rock & roll

Day 22: Appetite for Destruction - Guns N' Roses. Guns N' Roses Album 1/1. Here we go with another really fun album! Guns N' Roses made a great introduction to themselves in their debut album by opening it with the fiery number, Welcome to the Jungle. Over the course of the album's 53-minute and 29-second runtime plays various catchy hits to give one a good time. I don't particularly find this album to be a must-listen, and it is somewhat corny, but I did enjoy it very much. I am quite biased towards hard rock and heavy metal. Although, Axl Rose's vocals can be an acquired taste, and their music may feel overplayed if you've spent a long time listening to rock music on the radio. I recall that my father loved Guns N' Roses. You may love them. You may hate them. Their music has an essence to it such that it simply feels great to listen to it every once in a while. This album is a very good way to mark one's debut into the world of music. Personal Enjoyment: 5/5. How Much It Belongs Here: 3/5.

Some great songs, some ok

The highs are real high, but there’s a fair amount of padding here. Plus anything they can do AC/DC already did better.

All the classics are here 4/5

This album is so hard to rate. I mean it's amazing that this is a debut album when almost all the songs are still playing all the time on classic rock radio (for what that's worth). I feel like the music is undeniably good and different enough from the other similar bands of the time to be notable. However, having heard this album over and over, usually not by choice, I think I'm kind of over it. It's not that I don't like it, it's just that I mostly don't want to hear the same songs over and over. I think the problem with this is that it was too popular and too commercially successful. And there are two problems with that - 1) it's massively overplayed even today, and 2) because it was such a strong debut record, they would never be able to live up to this with whatever they put out after. Maybe only November Rain was as good as any of this. So I guess as far as a rating, I'd give it like a 3.5 and begrudgingly round up to 4/5.

and to think that I didn't like this band when I was younger. I consider this album even better than Use Your Illusion. It has all the elements for a great hard rock album. It's not for nothing that Guns N' Roses is an iconic band in the genre.

It was good but not one I will go back to I think

Good old rock n roll

Lovely album, full of recognisable bangers. Very good for livening up a journey to work. From what I’ve heard recently Axl has ruined his voice from years of harsh vocals. Would listen again

starts off as perfectly as one could hope an album could. Imagine being at a gig and thats the opening song? Fucking mental. Unfortunately that feeling didnt last, it was like that abit too much for me. Bangers standing out for me were the familiar ones… Welcome To The Jungle, Paradise City & Sweet Child O’ Mine. The rest of it was good, but I felt like it needed to slow down in places so that I could feel the speed increase when it came. Rather than the foot just being down to the floor the entire time. Torn between a 3 & 4. Will give a 4 because of how good the good bits are, and its short comings aren’t that the other songs are bad , just abit much to listen to all the way through.

These guys can certainly write a much better song than their contemporaries, to be fair though that’s not that hard when your contemporaries are mötley crüe and poison. Not to say they’re not good songwriters, they make that pretty clear, even with some sleazy lyrics. It’s solid, rock on and so forth

The hits are iconic.

Haven't listened to this all the way through until now. It's a great wave of music. The hits are great, some of the best hard rock anthems of all time. Artistically I don't think this is revolutionary but culturally it was sort of the last of the old guard to fall before alternative rock and grunge became the prevailing force. It's a great project for hard rock, even if the vocals are a little silly.

I have an oversaturation problem with Guns N Roses, which might be related to listening to the radio too much in my car commuting days. I view them as a "safe hard rock" band that what used to be classic and hard rock stations would play constantly. Welcome to the Jungle and Paradise City are good songs, but I have heard them so much in my life that I am entirely sick of them. They make me have a visceral negative reaction. The other huge offender is "Sweet Child of Mine" which has always sucked, thankfully. There are plenty of great songs on this album that aren't the songs I mentioned though. Nearly every other one is actually. Slash isn't "underrated" as it were but he really is an excellent guitarist. "Nightrain" and "Mr. Brownstone" (the latter a big single in its own right, but not nearly the offender the other three are) are complete 80's headbangers, "Out ta Get Me" has that awesome descending guitar flourish in the verse and a killer solo, etc, etc. There are a few stinkers toward the end - everything after "Sweet Child" is purestrain butt rock. You can smell the marlboros and bud lights from here. The only songs I hated were the three I mentioned and it's not because they're bad songs. There are three divisions to this album: overplayed nonsense, genuinely excellent 80's hard rock, and largely forgettable beer drinking music. I can't remember the last time I listened to this all the way through and it was nice to remember that it's actually a pretty ok album. It's not great but it is exemplary of the genre and there is a time and place for all of this. It's a bar you have to drive to in the midwest, unfortunately.

Outside of the 3 hits the songs sounded good but nothing really stuck with me. Slash was shredding though.

Pretty clear why guns n roses are as big as they are, but I dont think this is very exciting. I thought the beginning was good but it was boring by the end and not bc the songs were bad just bc the genre doesn't have much to it

I’ll set the music snob shithead part of my personality aside here and concede that this was a fun album

Gott rokk. Smá þreytt, en samt alltaf solid.

6.5/10

Somehow every song on this album seems to have the catchiest guitar riff you've ever heard. It's incredibly fun to switch off your brain and play air guitar to. Would be a 5, except that if you make the mistake of actually listening to the lyrics (which seem like they were written by a horny 14 year old) you'll want to cringe out of your body. If a instrumental version of this album existed it would be one of my favourite of all time

It's got some great singles. Great sound. 4.5 out of ten. Gonna round down though

Aunque, visceralmente, me gustaría darle 3.

take me down to the paradise city

Classic 80's metal, fun good music. I love the lyrics to a lot of their songs. Mr. Brownstone and My Michelle were highlights for me 4/5

I always wonder how I'd rate old albums if I heard them for the first time in 2024. I can't be objective about this one: I remember how I felt when I first heard it, and I can't get past that. I'm tempted to give it five stars, but there are a few weaker tracks on it (My Michelle, Out Ta Get Me, Anything Goes), so down to four it has to go. Still, Paradise City, Welcome to the Jungle, Nightrain - absolute crackers.

This has a few too many outstanding songs to give it an average score. But the ones that aren’t outstanding are very average!

I like, fuck my ex

It's incredible how many songs on this DEBUT album of all things are the ones that cemented the band's legendary status. Slash' guitar skills are amazing. It's just a shame that the lingering taint of misogny still resides in this album, and the other songs kind of blend together.

Better than I thought it would be, definitely brought me to the 80’s. I will give them credit for being surprisingly candid though. Particularly talking about chasing the dragon on Mr. Brownstone, this band stood out among a sea of boomer cis/het white men that is 80’s rock. 4/5, I would play again surprisingly.

A couple absolute bangers and a tiny bit of filler. 4.75

This album is actually pretty great. I like the song 'It's So Easy' or whatever it's called. Guitar and harmonies are brilliant. Would listen again

Classic rock album. Great start to finish.

Surprisingly fun

Solid with a bunch of classics.

Some high energy classics. Night train was a good one

Classic one! what more can I say? Their best album

welcome to the jungle: i like the opening, ive definitely heard this before 3/5 its so easy: 2/5 nighttrain: 2/5 out ta get me: 3.5/5 mr. brownstone: 2/5 paradise city: i rlly like the guitar here 3/5 my michelle: 4/5 think about you: 4/5 sweet child of mine: 5/5 you’re crazy 5/5 anything goes 4/5 rocket queen 4/5

Sounds like a flex, or not true, but I was obsessed with this album when I was 5. My older cousin was a teenager and had me remember all of the skull faces on the cover by name. This disturbed my mom. Are some of these songs dated? Sure. Does it still fuckin' rip? Hell yeah.

I don’t recall ever listening to the whole album before, albeit it felt like I knew more songs than the singles. Tbh I suspect that’s because a lot of the songs are to some extent quite similar. Is that a bad thing, I don’t think so in this case. I do now have a new found respect for the Slash/Stradlin combo, there are some great riffs and solos on this album. The song writing is pretty consistently good as well, albeit Axl’s lyrics can be a sit suspect and he can be annoying at times (basically the songs where he’s singing a lot, and not letting the band play). But all in all there are only a couple of weaker tracks, and it’s generally a very strong album, and one I’d be happy to listen to again, albeit not at my instigation I doubt. My main side point, and I have no idea how true it is. But this album did rather feel liked it killed ‘hair rock’. It might have been dying out anyway to some extent, but these guys just massively upped the metal game, and the super silly stuff died a death. Fair play to that.

I'm not sure what to rate this one. My main genre is metal. I've grown into focusing less on the lyrics and vocals and more on the riffs, guitar tone, drumming, etc. From this standpoint it's a 5 star album. When I focus on the lyrics it makes me feel ill. I did not sign up to listen to Axl Rose's sexual fantasies. Evens out to a 4 I'd say

What a classic 80’s rock album. One of the biggest & best of all time. We’ll likely never see bands of peak Guns N’ Roses’ calibre again in our lifetime.

Liked this a lot more than I thought I would.

Let's state the obvious first. Welcome To The Jungle is an all time banger. Maybe the best opening song on an album ever. Rocket Queen is also a banger and a great closer. If a couple of tracks were cut, this would be a perfect album. But I'm deducting a star for some outdated misogyny and Axl's somewhat petulant behaviour. But this is a rock solid album otherwise.

I mean, how could this be less than a 4? I doubt there is a more famous rock song than Welcome to the Jungle, and if there was one it would probably be Sweet Child O' Mine! This isn't wall-to-wall bangers, and it does come off a bit cheesy/cringe at times, but for a debut effort it's phenomenal.

Solid album

Most of the songs are good but nothing crazy. Welcome to the Jungle is an ok song but fun to sing along to but then there's a run of really good tracks in the middle. Really like Paradise City, My Michelle, and Think About You. And then there's Sweet Child O Mine. Great song. Best song on the album by far. Then back to bunch of ok to good songs

Pompous, but in an acceptable way.

While I am sick to death of the big hits off this record (shoutout to literally every cookie-cutter FM station playing Welcome to the Jungle multiple times a day for 20+ years), one cannot deny their importance in the overall history of rock n roll - there's a reason they're overplayed! Putting myself in the shoes of a listener in 1987, I cannot deny that these songs kick serious ass \m/ Slash managed to write one of the most instantly-recognizable guitar riffs of all time with Sweet Child O Mine - and I can fully understand and respect the fact that he hates it now. Everything outside of the big hits felt like a mixed bag to me - mostly padding, but with some interesting moments. By the time I got to the last track 'Rocket Queen' I was quite ready for it to be over.

Banger of an album that is unfortunately brought down by a few of the tracks in the second half of the album. Stradlin, McKagan & Adler are one of the best rhythm sections rock music ever saw.

I really do like guns n' roses and this album has always been a little special to me.

Was it as good as Lies ? Some might disagree :) but still a belter of an album

Actually liked it more than I expected. It's still corny as hell but honestly pretty fun overall.

A great debut, I used to listen to this a lot. It’s not quite filler free but it’s pretty close.

'Appetite for Destruction' is certainly a rock n roll classic. I can't describe the sound better than the Billboard review which praised the album's mix of \"metal's forceful playing, punk rock's rebellious themes, glam metal's aesthetic, and bluesy guitar riffs that appealed to purists.\" The big singles should already be familiar to most listeners, including 'Welcome to the Jungle', 'Paradise City', and 'Sweet Child O' Mine'. Those are powerful rock anthems that Still hold up today. Axl Rose is the epitome of a rock star in all the best and worst ways. It's as easy to picture yourself on stage belting out lyrics like he does, as it is to pick again the sometimes toxic, often drug-fueled lyrics. The non-single tracks also don't have the same impact as the others. Still, for an 80s rock band's debut album, it obviously made a massive impact on the music scene.

Banger debut

WOOOOOO!!!!! Fav Songs: Nighttrain, My Michelle, Sweet Child O' Mine

The classics of Welcome To The Jungle, Paradise City and Sweet Child O' Mine are of course so cold hard classics that this album could never be below a 3*, but the rest of the songs are fine to quite good, but truly I think this may be a band whose greatest hits are immaculate but individual albums are just good. I hope to be proven wrong but I didn't get convinced otherwise this time!

Solid rock album, got a lot of classics

I'm conflicted here. I loved these songs when they came out. Now, the vibe in a few tracks seems pretty off, especially in the opener. Some great riffs and great energy though. 3.5, I think

The hits are really good, the rest is pretty typical hair metal

Pretty good.

It was all down hill from here for GNR.

Classic. Precies mijn muziek. Paar inkakkartjes erop. 4,5 ster

# 345 : Great album, I really like this, seen 'em live recently and it was the worst concert I've been to. Shocking. Still good to listen to them every now and again… and THAT riff… Favourite track : Welcome To The Jungle

Had obviously heard the big three tracks off this countless times, but the rest of the album was just as good. Great energy, hard hitting rock

Sweet Child of Mine, Welcome to the Jungle and Paradise City are just class

Their one essential album

Haven't listened to much of Guns N' Roses before, but was looking forward to hearing this. Some good fun hard rock, love it! Slash's guitar work is incredible. Welcome to the Jungle starts us of with a banger. Mr. Brownstone was fun. Paradise City is always a classic. Sweet Child O'Mine is a nice slower (comparatively) jam. Rest of the album is solid. Best song: Paradise City

Though a good portion has been worn out by rock radio, this is hard to deny.

Glorious album. If it were a couple of songs shorter (ie remove the fluff) then it would be a 5

Iconic, for me one or two filler songs prevented a 5* rating

Four of the songs are just all time rock classics - Paradise City being the best of them all. However much of the other cuts are just so mediocre. The drums on Its So Easy sound like two shoe boxes and a pair of keys. That said the highlights are sublime. 4/5

Sex, drugs, and rock & roll. But that's just where the story starts. I've heard this album probably a hundred times or more, but it wasn't until recently, as I was listening with an ear to write something about the album, that I realized that this is a loose concept album. It's about going to the big city (in this case L.A.) to make it big, with your head full of dreams, only to be smacked by the reality of drugs and the eternal chase after a high you can never again reach. It's the later songs like "Paradise City" and "Sweet Child o' Mine" that has the protagonist regretting his decisions and wanting to go back home, wherever that is, far from the big city that is, indeed, not paradise, not filled with pretty girls, and certainly lacking in green grass.

Today on “songs that other media has ruined for me”: stepbrothers ruins sweet child o mine

I never really know how to rate Guns N' Roses. I despised them with a passion when I was a teenager, but more from envy than anything else, and even then I understood what my friend saw (and idolized) in how impressive Slash was. This is clearly their signature album, and really impressive for being a debut, and it has so many permanently-popular songs on it that it's nearly a greatest hits album on its own. Except that the other songs, of which there are *far* too many, are forgettable and interchangeable. But it's hard to ignore what a strange and far-reaching influence this band had on the glam/metal/rock scene. So as much as I *still* don't really enjoy listening to them, I can't help but give them a 4-star rating. Welcome to the jungle indeed.

fun rockah stacked with hits, no excuse not to enjoy it

It’s a classic but a little overplayed so the high points were already songs I’ve heard…a lot. Despite this the high points such as paradise city and sweet child of mine were as good as I expected and enjoyed. A certified classic album but not one I’m particularly fond of like many who enjoy it. 4/5.

There is a lot to like, but this just isn't for me. Too soft and poppy to be metal, I always think of this as teenage girls' "heavy music". (nothing wrong with that) Axl's vocals are very good but a bit same'ish. Slash certainly can play the guitar. I'll still give it a 4* because I'm in a good mood, it's an influential album, and it certainly has its qualities. Won't switch if off when it's on the radio but won't get the album either.

Hammer

Really a pretty fun album filled with a fair amount of hits.

I mean, just a full album of classic bangers. I'm sure for a lot of people this one is overplayed and they are sick of it, but I discovered it late enough in life that it still hits for me.

Absolute bangers weer

I had never considered myself a G&R fan - but there are a lot of great songs on this album, which I have never listened to in full before. My Michelle was a new favourite for me.

Kinda starting to wish I didn’t give the last album a 4…. Cause I enjoyed this way more than Joni… but I don’t want to give it a 5 either. That’s gotta be reserved for absolute bangers. Anyways my head was sore Friday afternoon from slightly head banging for an hour and a half or so. Good album. The popular songs are overplayed… but the rest of the album surprised me by how good it was.

Fun album from my youth. Lots of memorable songs. I don't have this in my current playlist because I think it's been overplayed, but it should still be acknowlegded for its staying power.

Before I even spun this record, I started penning some thoughts about GnR and how enthralled I was by their energy and what seemed like legitimate danger inherent in the band when this album came out in 1987. I saw them open for Aerosmith when this album was starting to launch and there was a feeling of a changing of the guard (which didn't exactly happen, I guess) — GnR was a young FORCE and Aerosmith was hitting Phase III with Permanent Vacation. Anyway, I was going to lament the fact that everything after this album was second-rate and GnR's being heralded as one the all-time greats was overstated considering they only really had one great album — and one that doesn't necessarily hold up after all these years. Then I spun the record, and OK, there's some legitimate greatness here. Axl, as big of an asshole as he is, was a revelation when this album landed, and while I'll argue that over a larger body of work he's kinda predictable, on this album, he's gold and there's no one who ever sounded like this. The riffs are big and scary and meaty and the whole package is enthralling more often than not. And in the same breath, the album is bloated — and I'm not even going to go into the misogyny and posturing because it may really be a portrait of the lives they were living. Like it or not. But bloated... indulgent soloing, too much Axl — I think they knew they had something special and they packed everything into these 12 songs. There are undeniable moments of brilliance. And you can also hear where things were going to go off the rails. Maybe they got too big too quick and were able to indulge themselves without restraint way too soon. Perhaps it's that touch of restraint that makes this album great. But it ain't perfect, so it gets the 4-star. I went into this feeling it might not get to that, but it's a landmark record. I just think it's all the band ever needed to release. Everything after this punched a hole in their legacy, IMO.

Heard it a bunch. It's got some classics, but also this sound was super short lived and it is not my favorite. They do it better than anyone else I've heard do it tho. It's a classic, but by no means one I come back to frequently. They come across as all energy, and the songwriting isn't that outstanding to me, even tho that's not necessarily the focus of the band. And while it doesn't factor into my rating of this album... GNR has one of the most puzzling discographies in popular rock music.

The definitive Guns N Roses album! One of the best rock albums of all time, even if a couple of tunes from it are way too overplayed on radio (paradise city, sweet child o mine) it's still just amazing. I'm more of a Use your Illusion kinda guy, but this is still the work that people know them for, and that’s what makes it a timeless classic! 4⭐️

This, for me, is kind of like the ur-rock album. When I think of how rock sounds in my brain it sounds like this album. Granted, I'm young-ish, so my understanding of rock was definitely formed through the Guitar Hero era (which relied heavily on the hits from the album). The hits are still bangers, like all timers. Welcome to the Jungle, Paradise City, Sweet Child o Mine... all masterpieces of rock from the orchestration and production to the vocals. Each a 5 minute odyssey in their own right. The other songs don't necessarily "slouch", but I think my taste in music, generally, has moved beyond this type of thing. A 15-16 year old version of myself still rocks out to these songs, but it's not me anymore.

The non major hits on this are even better than I thought!

8.6/10

Not the biggest fan of this type of music. But I can't deny the hits or overall musicianship.

8/10 Really enjoy it

83% Best: Welcome to the Jungle; Mr. Brownstone; Paradise City; Sweet Child O' Mine Must-Hear? Sure

How daring yet how commercial. This album can be generic yet it still slaps. This balance alone is quite impressive tbh. That being said, I still believe that GNR is a singles band. They made legendary singles, but their deep cuts and albums? Kinda mid.

Favorite Track: Sweet Child O' Mine

Welcome to having an appetite from rock legends. Some of the best guitar solos, takes me away to that special place. Axl Rose has a legendary voice which doesn’t sound like he’s shouting in songs! <<< welcome to the jungle, sweet child of mine, paradise city

So so good. 5 songs on here are all-timers. The only reason this gets a 4 is that the other songs are (frankly) butt.

It's crazy how every other album from them is so ass. This one is very good though. Will I listen to again: 95%

For some reason, my image of Guns N' Roses was that of a more serious than the average rock band (pretty sure the last time I heard their songs was a long time ago on the radio, and compared light pop-rock tunes something like "November Rain" seemed monumental). But yeah, they are a classic for a reason: lyrics and vibes that are all party are combined with proper hard rock sound. (Do I understand why Glam Metal is in the Metal umbrella? No)

Awesome.

Man this album is full of star power. The average American probably knows over half of this album just from incessant radio play of the hits (of which there are many). The album itself didn’t age too well, but I think this is more of a product of the genre than the content. It’s in a tough spot between the regrettable hair metal era of the 80s and the “hard” rock era of the early 2000s that I wish we could forget. Somehow, the album ends up being a blend of the best of all of these deprecated sub genres of rock and ends up standing out amongst it all.

What a hard album to rate. Three all-time bangers, and 10 below average songs full of Axl squealing and uneventful instrumentation. What doesn't help is also the fact that the hits are extremely overplayed in all media. Well, I guess I wouldn't feel comfortable with an average 3 for this album, even though it sounds fair. Very weak 4 it is.

Great for what it is

Was in Paradise City where Anything Goes listening to this. You’re Crazy if you don’t agree.

I was never a fan, but there's no denying this was a huge album.

Welcome To The Jungle is a fantastic way to open an album. Big hair blown out with Slash carrying the bulk of the burden here. Era defining sound. Mr. Brownstone is another favorite of mine. So tonally different from the rest of their stuff, but so great. My Michelle is a fun one. Lots of classic rock staples in this hour of runtime: Welcome to the Jungle, Sweet Child of Mine, Paradise City, Mr. Brownstone. Certainly encapsulates the hair metal sound of the 80s in opposition to the thrash metal sound of Metallica and more glam rock acts (Def Leppard, etc.). Hair metal isn't my favorite among these choices, but this album is classic for a reason. The song writing is solid and the big-room production certainly gives a larger than life atmosphere to Slash's work on the ax. For me this is a 4 / 5 -- not something I would pick to listen to frequently, but solid through and through without much in the way of excess.

An album that I completely memory holed the fact that I have listened to it many times before. Some good old fashioned American rock. Axl Rose's voice can get pretty annoying sometimes, but you can't deny that the guitar absolutely shreds. Welcome to the Jungle and Paradise City don't do so well as stand alone songs because of the massive overplay of them. As part of the album though they are awesome. Sweet Child O' Mine never fails to be a jam as well at any time. Nothing wrong with getting your shred on sometimes. This is just a bang on 4

I like this album. I like lots of the songs on it. I get why it may not be for everyone.

A ballsy and unapologetic hard rock whirlwind. Every song has a punishing energy that you can't help but headbang to. But I do think there's almost too much testosterone on this album, and it would have been even better if there was a song that wasn't about sex or girls. But a really fun listen regardless. Top tracks: Welcome To The Jungle, Nightrain, Sweet Child O' Mine

Solid 80s rock

Tough one to tie a grade to. But I did like pretty much every song. And the three singles can’t be overstated, though they’ve been overplayed to death. I think this is quite the achievement. I’ll give it 4.

Crazy that Bleach came out only 2 years after this

Mr. Brownstone Brings It Down.

Che bellino

Love the album cover. Great heavy metal-rock album.

Definitely not my thing, but I can recognize that this band was hugely successful and that this album drove a lot of that. Tough to go lower than 4 when the album has hits like Welcome to the Jungle, Paradise City, and Sweet Child of Mine.

Man, this is a tough one! A few legendary songs and the whole thing rocks…I just don’t know that it’s quite at that 5 status for me. Also quite a shame that Axl Rose is now a cartoon of himself. 4.5

Welcome to the Jungle 4.1 It's So Easy 3.5 Nightrain 3.7 Out ta Get Me 3.6 Mr. Brownstone 4.3 Paradise City 4 My Michelle 3.8 Think About You 3.7 Sweet Child o' Mine 3.6 You're Crazy 3.4 Anything Goes 3.5 Rocket Queen 3.7 Score: 3.741666667

Not always in the mood, but when I am it's a pretty solid album!

This is a bit of a blind spot as far as never checked out, can't say I've had strong feelings against it, but never got around to it. I got two songs in before I had to pause for work and "It's So Easy" was already in my head. Fuck it, I'm at "Paradise City" and I'm gonna re-start the whole thing. I'm already losing count of how many times I do that Axl Rose slither move. Obviously, a lot of hits came from this. Even the ones that didn't, like "You're Crazy," are pretty good. Definitely catchy. I think "Anything Goes" is the best example of what crappy bar rock bands have been trying in vain to capture since 1987. She's not gonna fuck you, bro. That and "My Michelle" are probably the low points of the album for me. It's no 9 Shocks Terror, either the Lip Cream release or the Clevo band, but it'll do.

Surprisingly good for work. Not as heavy as I expected fairly tame basically foo fighters 0.5

Packed with goodness. The first one I would actually listen to after this

I enjoyed that. Probably wouldn't listen to this more than once a year, but still a lot to like here. Not all killer, but perfect examples of a genre. A landmark of an album. Four star-ar-ar-AR-AR-ar-ars.

Definitely a classic. I've heard many of the songs through other media rather than directly. Songs like Welcome to the Jungle, Sweet Child O' Mine, and Paradise City. Anyways, the album for the most part keeps the beat going pretty quickly which is nice. The vocals have a fairly distinct pattern and tone to them which gives the music that characteristic Guns N Roses sound. The guitar work is powerful and keeps the music interesting. It all does start to sound a little repetitive however, like every song is "samey". The chord progression of My Michelle was quite interesting and caught me a little off guard at first. I love the use of of chromatic 3rds. Melodically, probably my favorite on the album. Sweet Child O' Mine is interesting in that it changes up the vibe of the album a bit. There's stronger usage of acoustic elements and it takes on a happier tone. The opening lead is iconic. The closing bridge is a nice change in pace in the song itself as well. Probably overall my #1 on the album, which is unsurprising given just how popular it is. Anything Goes was fun, especially in its use of güiro for rhythm at the start. The usage of female moans in Rocket Queen caught me off guard. Reminds me of Welcome to the Jungle and how Axl threw in a few moans. The other songs just don't quite sound as distinct to me. The opening song maybe? Anyways, it was still enjoyable to listen to. 3.75

Such an iconic album from my youth and really of all time. Really, really great stuff.

It’s wild how much of a difference it makes when you know some songs on an album! I’m not a GnR fan by any means but they’ve definitely got some good songs in their collection. Knowing a few of these songs definitely helped with my overall enjoyment of it. Yeah Axl’s voice is kind of irritating but that’s also kinda part of its charm?

Legendary. So many hits in one debut album.

Absolutely deserved of this list, especially as a first album. GNR has so much rightly earned fandom for a band that really only had 5 albums. Hit after Hit on this album. Between Axl's unmistakeable vocals and Slash's unbelievable guitar work, this album belongs in a time capsule to perfectly describe late 80's rock.

This may not be the greatest album of all time, however their is no better album out there to flex in the mirror and do karate moves to and I believe that is worth something!

bello e basta

Che bellino

This is so influential. I do hate the misogyny on display here but also there is some archetypical badassery that transcends the through the music

I kind of hate these guys but also found myself rocking out to some of this album.

Good album, it's just held back by a few songs and Axl Rose's singing; he sounds like he sings through a harmonica for his high notes and it's rather annoying. 4/5

Album 476 of 1001 Guns N' Roses - Appetite For Destruction Rating : 4 / 5 Favorite Tracks : Welcome to the Jungle / Paradise City / Sweet Child of Mine (The Usual Suspects from this album) Great debut album. I didn't listen much to this genre back in the day. While I enjoyed the hits, I never took the time or had the interest in pursuing further. It isn't that I don't like it, I just find a lot of it repetitive. I liked this album more than I thought I might. Several of the less known tracks were fine while others, less so. Good album. One I would put on again.

Sweet Child O' Mine is great. Slash is a legend. The other hits are fun. Axl Rose's vocals are something you have to be in the mood for to enjoy because they're quite silly. Very memorable. I can do without the moaning.

This is the band that rose above all the '80s hair metal Glam metal labels. But when it comes down to it, that's what they really are. There's still a lot of talent here and a lot of classic songs. I just don't feel like it holds up as much anymore.

It’s been a while since I’ve listened to this all the way through (like I was probably single digits in age still) so it was at least interesting to hear as an adult. For the 3-4 classics on here it’s a pretty uneven album overall with most of the non classics being incredibly lame and forgettable. This has rightfully been relegated to the pits of dad rock but if you haven’t heard it in a while sweet child and you’re crazy at least still pack some punch, paradise city and welcome to the jungle maybe less so for me.

hard to be for nostalgia and just rock at its best

Can't really say much about it. It's iconic and it's got a decent amount of bangers. It has kinda soured on me over the years but it is not bad. I don't think it's a masterpiece but it still rocks as hard as you think it would. Best - Welcome To The Jungle, Paradise City, and Sweet Child O' Mine (MPF) Worse - no bad songs tbh but it feels like a majority of these songs just flow the same. Make of that what you will. 3.50-3.75/5

It’s hard to argue with an album that can boast Welcome to the Jungle, Paradise City and Sweet Child O’ Mine but it does have a handful of middling songs in there too in my opinion. Obviously it’s iconic and was a pretty important album of its time that inspired generations of future guitarists and subgenres.

The classics are still classics and I’ll always be nostalgic for them but there is some drag to Appetite For Destruction. At 54 minutes, 2 or 3 filler tracks could be cut and the album would be miles better. Even still, the good tracks rip and I’m still here for them. 4 stars

Pretty fun so far. Some of the songs drag and they all blend in to each other. Surprised by all the classics in this one, they are pretty fantastic. Enjoyed it more than I expected! 4

So good, they should really re-record it with a proper singer. With absolutely stonking guitars from Stoke's finest, the throughline from this to Generation Terrorist is clear as day. The drumming is incredibly powerful, and the melodies on the big hitters are surprisingly complex and beautiful. Seriously though, get a better singer in.

This shit gas. I like 3 and 1

The singles on this are everything you want from hair metal, proper anthemic, huge solos, timeless. The album tracks never really reached the heights of the big songs but there were some good riffs here and there. Given I give a lot of rap a hard time, this was full of misogyny, seems they kept it out of the hits. GnR are a singles band really but this album is important in rock and definitely deserves to be included.

The album (and band) only really got big due to a sustained press effort, which gives you an indication of the type of songs these are. Radio-friendly, plenty of jangly riffs, and they never really outstay their welcome. You're Crazy is the best of the non-commercially successful songs. I really enjoyed it - the music knows what it is, and doesn't try too hard or to be anything more. Axl Rose sounds fantastic, and Slash is brilliant.

Favorite Tracks: Mr. Brownstone Welcome To The Jungle Paradise City

Feels like every song on this album could have been a hit. Don't like the hits as much on it since they're so incredibly overplayed. Great essential piece of hair metal though, probably all the hair metal you will ever need.

Hell yeah.

Objectively speaking, this is one of the most ridiculous albums from one of the most ridiculous bands ever. I can't even imagine. A classic for sure.

I like Guns N’ Roses? Who knew ??

really good album, will consider it giving 4.5 stars but there's no option

“I’ve got an alligator suitcase under my arm” Take hair metal but make it actual music! Surprisingly enjoyable.

I know how important this record is and how talented they are. But ive heard almost all of the songs already. Other than the mediocre songwriting this is a great debut

Potencia, mucha potencia

I understand why this album is on the list, but it's probably not the Guns N' Roses album I would have chosen. I think Use Your Illusion I is probably a more memorable album, even if it has less of their hits. Guns N' Roses has always had some pretty problematic lyrics, and there's definitely some stuff on here that made me cringe. However there are still a lot of good songs. "Mr. Brownstone," "My Michelle," and "Sweet Child O' Mine" are probably my favorites. It's still a good album, but not their best.

A cult classic that has aged surprisingly well. Yes, the hits are overplayed on the radio, but that’s just testament to what great songs they are.

I can see how this album was influential and can also imagine being the parent of a teenager in the 80s and absolutely LOATHING it. Unapologetically vulgar with stark lyrics about addiction that would push boundaries even by today’s standards. Wicked guitar work of course. I’ve never intentionally listened to Guns N’ Roses and certainly never heard any non-radio hits. Will I go back and listen again or would I have sought this out if not for the 1001 albums site? Probably not, but it was a fun way to spend the morning and I did add Welcome to the Jungle to my running playlist.

The album is elevated by the epic singles, that make it deserve a 4 star rating overall. My issue with G&R is that there is such a narrow formula that the album tracks just seem to follow the same path. A bit of copy and paste at times. Great to have on rumbling away whilst you’re pottering about, and then turned up to 11 when Sweet Child comes on.

This debut is packed with hits that I've heard too many times but the rest of the album is pretty deep with decent tunes. Hair metal is a genre I generally look at as being vapid and cheesy but it can be good fun in the right mood and I think these guys represent some of the best of the genre.

Amazing guitars and so many classic songs! Will never get tired of paradise city! Axl rose’s voice isn’t my favorite.

great snarling attitude throughout, loads of rock, not much roll, with a handful of cracking songs. the work of Izzy Stradlin's guitar, holding things together and swinging is not always celebrated, but he is the secret weapon of this album. it does run out of steam towards the end, but the highs are pretty high!

Rock un filo peso per me

Classic album. One of the first cds I bought.

There are a lot of great songs on this, and it definitely deserves its place on the list, but man are the best songs overplayed. I don't really need to hear them ever again.

Have not listened to this record in its entirety for a very long time. A few good surprises (Mr Brownstone) in particular. And some duds TBH. The 3 big hits are timeless.

Great music with a lot of energy.

What is there to say about an album that's been on repeat on rock radio stations ever since it got released in 87? Released at the right moment in time when Rock 'n' Roll was in need of a good kick up the ass because it had become stale and goody-goody. and Guns 'n' Roses did just that. No, it's not the best album in history, but Hardrock like this is about the attitude, and this band brought it.

It's got 3 classic songs on it, so 4/5. I didn't love the other songs. They all had a similar style.

Banger! Vanvittig debut, måske lidt for lang, men langt de fleste sange kan stort set stå for sig selv.

This was an iconic album in 1987, and defined late 80's hard rock. I own 3 GnR songs, and all are on this album. However, they haven't really aged all that well. The songs don't really stand up to the insane amount of overplay they've received (at the time or on through today). And it doesn't help that their lead singers is, by all accounts, one of the biggest A-holes in the industry, whose singing voice actually detracts from the music. But this album belongs on this list for sure. It was huge when it came out and made a lasting impression. This, along with Def Lepard's Hysteria, defined 1987 hard rock. That said, neither band has aged especially well. This isn't my favorite, I've never felt the need to dig deeper than the 3 songs I've owned. Today's listen-through of this album supported my previous position, beyond the big hits it is pretty generic. But this still gets a 4/5. because you can't deny its impact, and the big hits are BIG.

Yes 🤘

This album falls in the better than I first thought and not as good as I remembered category for me. I'll enjoy it should I hear it again but won't yearn for another listen if I don't.

Es realmente bueno el disco. Medio monótono, pero la calidad es indiscutible.

YYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS my michelle new discovery on this album. i like it

tätä kuullut lapsuudesta saakka. oli myös ensimmäinen bändi johon tyrmistyin kun ymmärsin yhtään mitään musiikista. slash on vitun tylsä kitaristi ja axl rose on paska versio robert plantista mutta ehkä epä pedo versio pelkästään huume hörhö emt en jaksa tietää... tässä albumissa kuitenkin parasta tuotantoa mitä bändiltä nyht on ja en objektiivisestsi en voi liian alas mennä vaikka subjektiivisuus on mitä on mutta ei häkellytä ei missään nimessä vaikuta arviointiin millään lain.. ihan syystähän tässä miljardibiisejä monta kappaletta. geneerisyyden huippu welcome to the jungle

Legendary

The Most American Album by The Most American Band (note: I said Most, not Best)

The bangers still slap. It's a mixed bag lyrically, but you really can't deny what a breath of fresh air this seemed at the time.

chanananananananananiiiiiiiiiiiiiii

10 years ago I would’ve given 5 stars, but Guns N’ Roses’ importance to me has declined over the recent years, but still a collection of some of the greatest 80s rock songs

gotta love Axel's snarl on this record. Rockin' tunes for sure. heads above anything else released that year.

I really liked it. It was quite good and didn’t go gentil on the rocky-ness.

This is Nihilism set to music, and as a theory is great stuff. I loved this album when it debuted in 87, and still listen to several of the songs regularly. They certainly lived the Sex, Drugs and Rock n Roll lifestyle to the extreme - but 40 years in when we look at Axl Rose can we really say that was a good thing?

Classic rock album. Doesn't get more iconic than their vocal and guitar one-two punch.

4. 80s hardrock/metal isn't usually my cup of tea, but there's something about this album I really enjoy.

It is what it is, the pinnacle of dusty dad rock, you’ve heard every song here a million times. Still it’s listenable and it deserves its acclaim.

8/10. Slash covers non singles. Singles are all bangers. If other songs had better vocals and lyrics probably would bump

SWEET CHILD O MIIIIIIIIIINNNNNEEEEE

7/10. The most up and down album so far. High highs and low lows. Probably the band that I like their mainstream stuff and don’t like their deep cut stuff the most (outside of Nirvana, but I like Guns N Roses more than them all around).

4.5 Very good stuff. Very recognizable.

You come to this album for the hits. I could take or leave the rest, but the hits are SO damn good, they bump up the overall album score in my estimation. Songs like “Sweet Child o’ Mine” and “Paradise City” have so much more musicality than the heavy metal bands of the day, while songs like “Welcome to the Jungle” and “Mr. Brownstone” give GNR a much grittier appeal than the hair metal bands that ruled the airwaves. This album struck the right balance to appeal to me at that time, even though the lyrics were far over my head.

This is the best of what the hair metal era had to offer and I still can’t give it a five. For all the strength of the hits, a few of the tracks are just absolutely nothing.

4.5 Some all time bangers, mixed in with not as good which drags it down from being a 5.

Better than I thought.

got some bangers

I actually decided to give this a listen, and it’s been so long, it was like a breath of fresh air again. I try my hardest to listen to every single album on this generator, but some of these albums, live heard SO MANY times over the years, there is nothing left to get out of them at this point, and I thought this would be one of them. But for whatever reason I decided to play it on my way to work, and it’s been so long since I’ve heard these songs, I actually enjoyed them the way I did back in the 90s when I was a kid hearing this stuff back when it was new and fresh.

no escuchaba este disco desde los 12

before the bloat

Great album…..reminds me of childhood memories. One of the albums Trace had on repeat back in the day so always going to enjoy it.

You're in the jungle baby You're gonna dieeee

I loved it. Of course I did. I couldn't decide between 4 and 5 stars but had to had to had to settle on 4 because I've rated some of my faves at a 4. So 4 it is.

Denk mn favo albumopener ooit.

Pretty good

Hard to settle on a number for this one - when this came out the only people who liked Guns and Roses were older than me and/or massive bogans. Hair metal is a funny beast - ridiculous in so many ways. And yet… there is still an appeal to this album for me. I enjoy the music (sans singing) and sweet child of mine was a big enough hit at the time that it has burned a space into my brain such that I got a pleasant sense of nostalgia. Against my better judgement I enjoyed a play through and found myself letting it go for a few extra repeats, while having to look over my shoulder and make sure I wasn’t caught listening to it at work.
