C’est vraiment sympa mais sans plus pour la plupart des titres. J’aime bien Ann et I wanna be your dog et surtout We will fall. Ce remplissage psychédélique de 10 minutes est incongrus et parfait à mes yeux.

Some very solid early punk. I think I prefer their later work but this is classic.
I can see how this album set the stage for more modern punk music. While it has it's misses and hits, The Stooges self-titled album is an undeniable classic. My only issue with The Stooges is not their music. I feel like they were aiming for shock over substance in many of their live performances. Luckily, they avoid dumb "shock" factor in their music, unlike The Sex Pistols. Best Songs: We Will Fall, No Fun, Real Cool Time Worst Songs: Ann, Little Doll

This is an absolute _monster_ of an album . Must have been quite eyebrow raising back in 1969! The faster tracks are rockin'. The slower, dronier tracks are moody AF - kinda prefigure some of the things Sludge and certain flavors of Doom get up to. Fave track - "I Wanna Be Your Dog" is just unspeakably badass....

Awesome. 1969 and I Wanna Be Your Dog are classics. Still so fresh nowadays, which is a feat after 50 years! We Will Fall was an unexpected change of mood - this songs sounds like a bad trip, but it is so intriguing. It did completely break the mood in a jarring way, but that added to it. Unfortunately I do think the album turns quite unremarkable after that (the lyrics seem a bit half baked at times)... But I do think the first three songs are a LOT to live up to.

Another stone-cold classic. It's been 1969 okay for a long time now, all across the USA, but also inside the head of so many obsessed rockers, there and elsewhere. Likewise, fans have wanted to be Iggy's dog for decades due to those three insanely simple yet ravenous guitar chords every *loud* band has at least once practiced in their rehearsal space. And from that other cut that sneered about having "no fun", a whole genre spewed forth: punk rock. It's as if you're witnessing its lurid conception here, Iggy's lascivious howls and yells teasing with Ron Asheton's erect guitar riffs--sharp as a blade, driven like the pistons pumping in those Detroit factories, unrelentless. And this until *your* brain melts. With three cuts like that on your very first album, how can you lose? Of course, said album must not only be summed up by those three monsters, as sly "Ann" and that dark psychedelic, slowly entrancing, heroin-laden number, "We Will Fall", can prove it. John Cale's production is spot-on--meaning that you have the feeling that he didn't really intervene to change any part of that gorgeous sonic chaos, and just got the tape rolling to catch lightning as it struck inside the Stooges' bottle. This, folks, is how you're giving birth to an incredibly influential record. Such lightning would strike two more times, with *Funhouse* and *Raw Power*. I can't wait to give a 5/5 grade to those other two masterpieces. Good luck to the album that's gonna pop up tomorrow, ha ha. Far ahead of its time. Best track is "I Wanna Be Your Dog". It still sounds sleazy, sexy and a bit dangerous in 2022 and I imagine it would've been mind-blowing in 1969. However, I didn't like all of the songs equally. For example, "We Will Fall is an indulgent 10-minute track that's like the Doors meets Velvet Underground. I prefer when the Stooges stick to garage rock and proto-punk.
Never got into the Stooges though they would seem to be in my wheelhouse. I liked this, felt a little less tolerant of long experimental slogs like We Will Fall than I do with similar indulgences by say the Velvet Underground. And generally find this a little slack and undercooked, but then that’s Punk right?
A musical onslaught
loud, distorted, irreverent and brilliant. Is it 5 stars not quite. The 10 minute dirge We Will Fall keeps it from the highest level, not because its not good; it is quite good and interesting, but damn it is too long. I wanna Be Your Dog almost single-hadedly brings it to a 5 but ultimately can't quite do it. 4.5 stars.

I love Iggy and The Stooges. Raw Power is up there as one of my favourite records ever. This would be a 5* but for the super long We Will Fall. I Wanna Be Your Dog is one of the best songs every recorded

There are some really cool sonorities as some length and repetitions I though, I think it's a good rock album but not every track is a hit and there are some quite off miss such as We will fall or Ann. Nice listen overall but nothing crazy. 2.75/5
Really like the vibe of the album... From some weird vocals to good guitar solo's also the length of the album, with one song lasting 10 minutes!! It was a brilliant experience... Small 4/5

It was fine. Bit droney. Iggy sounded rougher as the album went on. Also he was a bit noncey at the time so points deducted for that. Apart from a couple of outstanding songs I've never really gotten on with Iggy.

Thought I would have enjoyed this more. However, the bizarre 10mins of "We Will Fall" taking up 1/3 of the runtime left a sour taste.
I've listened to raw power before and I didn't think too much of it so wasn't expecting to like this either...... However was pleasantly surprised. Doesn't sound like it was made in 1969, can see how it was the inspiration for a lot of punk. The first 2 tracks are great.
One of the best. Just a nuanced raw reaction to rock n roll gone astray. Just a killer record and a killer vibe and a killer sound.

Unconditional for the time or now, obviously influential as I can’t imaging anything sounding so loud and raw at the time, now it just feels like a lot of the music it influenced. Worth a listen within context

One of the foundational leaders in the punk movement. This is a solid album which keeps a certain chaotic sound that counters to the hippies of the 60’s.

Good album to start a work week. Listened again to start today. 1969 and I want to be your dog are fantastic openers. Really liked No fun and Little doll too. One WTF song was We will fall. Just didn't seem like it belonged with this album and was way too long Enjoyed and would listen again. A good 3 to 3.5 for me. Will record as 3 because if we will fall.
4.5 I didn’t know much Iggy Pop beyond what appears in Tony Hawk games which were always cool punk songs. This was also a really fun punk album to listen to. Surfy and fast which is my favorite kind of punk. The 10 minute chant in the middle was surprising and overstayed it’s welcome by about 7 minutes though. Short of that it was perfectly serviceable. Favorites include: Pretty much all of them except We Will Fall
3.5 It's clear how much influence The Stooges and Iggy Pop had on punk music with this album - Hell, the Sex Pistols would even go on to do a cover of No Fun. This has all the makings of a solid punk record - 1969 is a great track and opener, I Wanna Be Your Dog is a Stooge classic... then I'm not really sure what was going on in We Will Fall. The 10-minute psychedelic noisescape track was kind of an unnecessary and jarring shift for me. No Fun is a good start to Side B, but not much after that jumped out to me. Solid protopunk album, but nothing spectacular. Favorite songs: 1969, I Wanna Be Your Dog, No Fun

A decent album overall but more of an influential album that has affected music over the years. Like most Iggy Pop music this is good at times. Then there are songs where the lyrics are odd and banal. I did enjoy the instrumentals a bit more on this compared to his solo stuff. 6.2/10

Strong debut for the godfathers of punk but there are some duds here and there. We Will Fall is 7 minutes too long and besides No Fun, side B is a bit lacking.

Big fan of Iggy and his Stooges, and I appreciate the significance of this album. Listen to the birthing pains of a new genre. But it does feel like a bit of a fossil, and does not hum along the way Funhouse does. Ah well, they can't all be perfect.
Primordial punk at its infantile finest. Without this album and this band the shift from skiffle infused Beatles rock, and psychedelia doesn’t happen.

Good enough
I liked this! Also, I had no idea they started in the greatest city of all time (but I might be biased since I live in that city). I did find the songs a bit repetitive but imagining how this would have sounded when it was released was satisfying.

I have to admit, I was totally thrown for a loop by listening to this album. Growing up, I associated Iggy Pop / The Stooges with a more hardcore punk sound, but I couldn’t name a specific song if my life depended on it. I think it’s because he was infamous for his stage antics, but I was not expecting this Doors cover band soundalike. I really liked I wanna be your dog, not right, no fun. I wasn’t feeling the monk chanting if we will fall, which made up almost a third of the album’s length.
Middle of the road all the way for me. No tracks stood out except for "We Will Fall" which felt like a bizarre social experiment.
Classic seminal Detroit punk. This album takes you into a gritty, disaffected world and keeps you there. My only gripe is the 10min+ "We Will Fall" that kind of derails the listen, but "No Fun", "Loose", "I Wanna Be Your Dog" are all-time classics.

Wow! What an album! It took my by surprise, unexpectedly awesome
Fun to listen to this album while I’m visiting Ann Arbor! The Stooges are a great garage Rock proto-punk band. I’ve always been an Iggy Pop fan. The album starts with a bit of youthful cynicism — 1969 is just another year with nothing to do. Driving drum line, cool guitar effects, and Iggy’s assertion of not caring all make for a great classic tune. Moving on to the one that got me listening to the Stooges: “I Wanna Be Your Dog.” This song is strange and perverse, but it’s clear that the musicians are just being shock-value teens (or perhaps making an incisive, tongue-in-cheek critique of sexual monogamy). After those two short and rather simple tunes, we move to the ten minute “We Will Fall,” which has a dark psychedelia vibe to it with deep drones, a dirge-like tempo, and another language at the beginning. This piece definitely differentiates the Stooges from other garage/proto-punk groups — I wonder how this sounded live. I also wonder how this particular song was perceived at the time (perhaps it was perfect for smoking listeners to get high to) as it is clearly influenced by Indian drone music. Regardless of its cultural context, I thought that song was a pleasant surprise! Next, we move back to the punk stuff. That fuzzy guitar sound is so classic Stooges. The recurring theme appears to be teenage boredom, harkening back to “1969.” “No Fun” has been my least favorite so far; I think it drags a little. “Ann” has a different feel from the other songs, and it’s nice. This song feels somewhat more sophisticated lyrically than the others. The third half erupts back into fuzzy garage goodness. The band blinks back into crude garage punk on “Not Right.” Though the lyrics on these types of songs aren’t as sophisticated as those on “Ann,” Iggy’s stilted phrasings simulate a conversation or scene creating a kind of musical realism against the backdrop of musical chaos. The final song on the album is “Little Doll,” again evoking a kind of perverseness like “Dog.” Classic grimy rock ‘n’ roll with musical and lyrical surprises (drone, fuzz, perversion, and the occasional tenderness). An easy 5!

I’m a big iggy pop fan, this album was just not it for me. A 10 minute track of nothing.
Pros: Most songs have a nice steady energy I can really vibe with. Cons: Songs can get a bit repetitive / go on too long for my taste. Noteable: The unsettling slow burn of We Will Fall is unlike anything I've heard before. The wanky messing around on the guitar stuff has never worked as well for me as it does on that track.

when this album popped up, my eyes rolled so far into the back of my head. Two british rock bands in a row? Come on...and they have the audacity to call themselves the stooges?? Though I appreciate there are four of them. But as I listened, I realized this wasn't a british rock band, nor was it a typical rock band. Very psychadellic which is par for 1969. I enjoyed this, and while there wasn't a lot of nuance or things that made it stand out, I enjoyed I Wanna Be Your Dog.
Just when I say I'm jaded with rock albums, we get a punk rock classic. I've been wanting to sink my teeth into a Stooge album for a while. You've got Larry, Curly, Moe, and Iggy Pop. This album is really great, so many heavy tracks with a persistent energy. I honestly don't think I knew any of these tracks going in, but from "I Wanna Be Your Dog" I knew I was in for a ride. I love the blend of punk (before punk was even a thing) with some psychedelic solos and riffs, very cool combo. So much on here that I'll keep coming back to. Really, truly impressive that this is pre-'70s. Better punk than basically all of what we've heard through the '80s and '90s. It's a 4.5 star today, but I don't doubt that this one could climb to a five after more listens. Consider me a StoogeHead in more ways than one. Favorite tracks: I Wanna Be Your Dog, Not Right, We Will Fall, Real Cool Time, Little Doll. Album art: Definitely iconic, I've seen this one plenty. Maybe a bit unassuming as a band photo but something about the way these guys are tiered is enticing. And the warm color palette works well too. The kind of album you'd pick up in 1969 thinking it was some new Beatle BS and it's these guys coming to search and destroy. 4.5/5

Already knew many of the tracks - 1969, I Wanna Be Your Dog, No Fun - all proto punk classics. We Will Fall was a surprise - could have fitted on a Velvet Underground album as it's a 10 minute drone! Basically, a classic album that deserves your full attention.
The debut album by The Stooges is a solid hard rock album. It was a short album that I rushed through and plan om doing a deep dive one the album and the band in the future.
The album is at its best when it’s raw and wild. I didn’t get into this nearly as much as the other Stooges album we listened to, “Funhouse,” but it’s cool to hear them on their first album developing their strange, snarling style. I thought the 10-minute “We Will Fall” was going to build to something more. Not sure why they made that one so long when they could have snuck another song on the album instead.
Definitely a cool, rough, rock n' roll band! My issue is that it definitely loses my attention due to being so drone-y and repetitive. I mean, why is "We Will Fall" ten minutes long without ANY build up? When I saw the timestamp on it, I thought it was going to be some epic thing...
Some of The Stooges is cool, the first two tracks and No Fun are great, fuzzy overdriven 60s rock, but then there are songs like We Will Fall and Ann that are absolute dirge. 3/5, right bang in the middle.
Didn't look at the release date for this initially (although you'd have thought I'd get a clue from the first song!), but was very impressed when I did - this feels very ahead of its time (actually in places sounds really similar to the White Stripes album that I just listened to before this). Do I actually like it though? Not massively... can see that it's totally trailblazing, but didn't actually enjoy listening to it that much. The 11 minute track is absurd, even the first two tracks could probably have benefitted from being a bit shorter (but are still pretty good), and after that it's fine but doesn't below me away. 3/5 overall.
Eh. It's whatever. Sounds like everything coming out of the 1969 scene. I'll take The Velvet Underground any day over this. 2.5/5
I love the attitude and the guitar's level of ferocity, but none of the songs really do anything for me on a soul level. Wanna go for a 4, but it's probably a 3 to these ears. Definitely an album that was a blueprint for punk.

Some ok the 10 minute track is awful
I know it's very influential but that's all there really is to say about this. The first two songs are okay, after that I did not enjoy it anymore.
Feels more trippy than punk, and DIY in the extreme. One appreciates the influence more than one enjoys the music. Not even Mark Smith of the Fall sounds as much like Mark Smith of the Fall as Iggy does here.
Introduction to the stooges. Noting major on this debut album but still good.
I can't say that I'm 100% delighted, I kept two songs from this album, but the song "really cool time" is somewhat reminiscent of to "I wanna be your dog", 6(7).5/10

My Ann Arbor area homeboy! How could you not love The Stooges? Something that just occurred to me - The Stooges are the missing link between The Doors and punk rock. I've always felt there was something slightly punk about The Doors, maybe just that they were rebels. I know Iggy was inspired by Jim Morrison, and you can hear it in their first album, but it also has more of a punk ascetic. Anyway, thank you for coming to my Ted Talk. 4 stars.
Mega clang
When you listen to the album now, you can pretty much hear the birth of punk over the course of the album. I wonder what it would have sounded like at the time, must have sounded completely new, subversive- dangerous even.
I listened to this a few times, but it failed to sink in. It was probably a very striking and innovative heavy rock album at the time, but similar & better examples of the style have been recorded since, making this less interesting to the ear of 2022. I loved song #1, and then the album fell apart for me. It was like Velvet Underground and The Rolling Stones had a baby, and it was one of those babies you look at and cringe. It has value: it’s a baby, after all. But good lord!
I actually liked this. It gave me psychedelic punk Rolling Stones vibes.
Getting this so soon after Velvet Underground and Nico... it's so much like those cats with extra sneer. I really dig it. People were really into dirges in the 60s. If that track were like 6 minutes, this album is less than a half hour long. That's a little weak... but what remains is really good.

Alright proto-punk album. "1969" and "I Wanna Be Your Dog" were great but the rest of the album fell short for me. Though can definitely see how this has influenced more modern punk albums.

Un peu dans la veine des Rolling Stones, un peu des Doors et plus de distorsions. Pour l’époque, un album important qui a ouvert une nouvelle voie. I Wanna Be Your Dog est une pièce incontournable.

what this album generator has shown me is that i'm not a huge fan of proto-punk! i suppose i like a more refined noise, though i know for a fact i do enjoy iggy pop's music. i did find something to enjoy about this album, and it grew on me after the first listen. getting past my biases and first impressions is important! "we will fall" is a dark, ominous, hymnal-like song. the guitar in "i wanna be your dog," wow! "no fun" is fun to clap along to! and of course, for the artists with long careers, such as iggy pop, it's always interesting to hear their first album.
This album was okay. As someone who isn't too familiar with Iggy Pop, I was very intrigued by his vocals on this album; they often reminded me of the fairly unique stylings of Mick Jagger -- if Mick Jagger did proto-punk style music. I can't recall ever having heard anyone sound like they are emulating Mick Jagger, intentionally or otherwise. On some of the slower songs, it reminded me a bit of some stylings that would become popular under the goth/new wave 80s umbrella. Overall, it seemed pretty ahead of its time, and probably the best listen of the proto-punk genre I've heard on this project so far. I'd rank this at about a 2.5/5, but will round up to 3.
After 330 albums on this list, things start to get a pattern. Sometimes I enjoy finding out some cool non-English albums (even being so few in the book) and sometimes I spent the whole week listen "the same thing". Then...this! It's very strange to note how a 50 years album can be so refreshing. I don't know if it's a pre-punk, metal, or anything, but it's very good!!
Mucky, murky, half eaten relics of psych-cum-garage-cum-noise-cum-grunge-cum-what-may. I generally have an appreciation for edgy ambition, but I like it to be more rounded off than this.
I dig the vibe, but the energy is pretty flat. It's kind of like psychedelic punk, which I don't feel meshes all that well.
The first song made me worried my headphones were broken, very werid left/right balancing. But after that was smooth sailing. The beats do get same'y, but they keep up a kind of energy I appreciate, and We Will Fall and Ann provide sufficient breathers for the whole to stand strong. Little disappointing on the vocal front, would have prefered them to be clearer and easier to make out - it definitly felt like they were drowned out on some tracks. Still a fun, entertaining ride. Highlight: We Will Fall
Didn't amuse me. It wasn't a wasted time, but I didn't find anything gripping about this record. I quite enjoyed the psychedelic vibes, tho.

Przeciętniak. W 1969 pewnie bardziej imponujący. Trochę punkowo troche rockowo, trochę punkowo, trochę psychodelicznie - ale w każdej z tych kategorii jest pełno lepszych przedstawicieli. Niektóre kawałki fajne, ale całość dość nudna. 3.5, ale za mało na 4.

It was an okay album, but not great. "We Will Fall" was, by far, the standout track of the album and felt like the basis for everything GY!BE has done (and I mean that in a good way). +1 star just because of that track
Enjoyed most of it. I think I listened to the remastered version so there were some extra bits that were a bit lost on me as I'm not a mega fan or anything (yet). There was one song that I swear the artic monkeys sound just like them.
I've never listened to this before. In fact, I don't think I've ever heard the original version of "I Wanna Be Your Dog" although I've heard it covered live at least a handful of times (latest by Guns N Roses last summer). Strange to see an 8-song, 34 minutes album with 1 song that is over 10 minutes long.
This isn't my bag, but it is great. I think it's one of those albums that is more important than good. Important to the development of punk music and its legacy. Also, not mentioned enough is that John Cale (the Velvet underground) produced this album. I met Iggy Pop once and he was really nice.
Awesome album, never really listened to The Stooges before, but looking forward to exploring their music more. I Wanna Be Your Dog the standout track for me.

Crazy that this music was made in 1969, just amazing for the time. I can't say the album is consistent as fun house but it doesn't have to be. I wanna be your dog.. just wow.
Didn't realise The Stooges were active in the sixties; maybe for its time this was quite fresh and interesting. Today, the cool, scuzzy vibes aren't really enough to make up for the lack of actual songs - most of 'em just sound like basic jams. And I'm an Iggy fan.

First half of the album, I felt all the songs were at least 30% too long. '1969' was very evocative. 'I Wanna Be Your Dog' is a classic, and 'We Will Fall' feels very particularly of its time. But for all you read about The Stooges' proto-punk, I don't get the visceral sense of anger and frustration that I do from later punk music. The lyrics are largely not great, and the musical motifs and hooks sort of outstay their welcome. I feel like there's something I'm not getting. I didn't much like it.
We Will Fall should pull this down to 4 stars, but the rest of it is so damn good.

I literally know nothing about The Stooges so I was expecting unremarkable dad rock. It's more punky and psychedelic. There's that 10 minute long full-on psychedelic track "We Will Fall". I'm a fan of that kind of music, but I felt like like it was missing something. All the other songs were fairly unremarkable and unmemorable. "1969" was my favorite one, I think. "I Wanna Be Your Dog" was pretty unexciting despite apparently being the big famous hit. A 2.5/5 probably. I'll round it up.
We Will Fall is kind of droney meh. Most other tracks are great. Some of my favorites.

A few songs grew on me the second listen to bump it from a 2 to a 3. It’s a bit more thrashy and experimental compared to other albums I’ve heard from this time which was a nice surprise. 5/10

I wanted to like it. I was only familiar with the first two tracks before listening and enjoy them both. They might be the only two good songs on the album though. The third track is so fucking bad and it spoils the rest of the listen.
Interesting proto-punk. But again, you don't really need 2 Stooges albums on the list and it gave me Fun House 2 weeks ago which I much preferred.

Interesting one. It sounds like a few guys who have just heard velvet underground, and are bluffing their way to record an album. It doesn't match VU or Doors by a long way. We will fall: What were they thinking. pretentious gobbledeygook. John Cale influence and as one reviewer called it - padding. Lyrically these fellows didnt stretch themselves!!! Listening to some of their other stuff I'm not sure they had the ability. However all said, it is ahead of it's time and inspired alot of music I love. Great idea but very weak in parts. Cover art: generic atyle photo but it expresses some tension. Like the band logo. 2/5
Having never even heard of the stooges before, I began listening with an open mind. However, once the second song was finished, i realisd i had listened to their most played song and didn't even realised the song had changed... This album felt like the lyrics were there to bulk up the songs. We will fall especially highlights this, 10 minutes of random to make the album longer...
I like the guitar...not crazy about the singer
The Stooges' self-titled debut feels like a promising, yet underwhelming, first effort. While the grimy, distortion-heavy sound is neat and the rest of the instrumentation is solid, some of the guitar work leaves a bit to be desired. Songs like "I Wanna Be Your Dog" and "No Fun" would probably be (ironically) more fun to listen to if they weren't so repetitive. "We Will Fall" seems to be a collective head-scratcher to most, but I didn't mind it during my listens. Although it does have some sense of motion that carries it through it's 10-minute length, I have to ask why the hell would you make the long, droning psychedelic piece the third track after "1969" and "I Wanna Be Your Dog"? A lot of the vocal melodies leave a bit to be desired, like on tracks such as "Ann" and "Not Right", even if the former picks up towards the breakdown. Even with its shortcomings, "The Stooges" is still a solid record, elevated by the attitude behind the performances and its ahead-of-its-time sonic palette. Man, this is a strange album. It kicks ass for two songs, then we take 10 minutes to listen to some of the most boring music to come out of the 60s, and then the rest of the album is 2nd or 3rd rate copies of the first two tracks. Disappointing listen. Favorite Tracks: "1969", "I Wanna Be Your Dog"
Great, but not as great as some of their later albums.
This is a strange one to review. Do you review it knowing everything you know in 2022 (when this review was written) or do you try to think of what 1969 was like? I choose to go with the later. It rules, and it would've blown my mind in 1969.

A loud, distorted, chaotic slice of R&R history. There are some classic songs here; 1969, I Wanna Be Your Dog, No Fun and Real Cool Time (which I first as a Feelies cover). Not sure what to make of the 11 minute freak out that is We Will Fall but this album is a vital piece if R & R history and should probably heard by any music lover. 4.5 🌟

Thank you, 1001 Albums project, for continuing to introduce me either to so much music, most of which I just plain missed for my entire listening life. I also almost always read the linked Wikipedia entry for each album because I find it interesting to get the story behind the album. This is yet another album I just somehow never heard and knew nothing about. It's almost as old as I am, yet if someone told me it was from any one of several stops along the way, mostly in the punk, garage rock, indie rock, etc., world, I'd easily believe it. It's straightforward and fun, and although I don't have the knowledge to map out how many bands after sound a little or a lot like this, I'm sure it's a big number. Good raw and sometimes trippy rock. Gets a bit chaotic and noisy for me at times, but what they're doing in those moments fits with the album.

I liked "Fun House" better, but I enjoyed this album too. I like their sound, I like their style. Did not love "We Will Fall" though - too long, too jarring compared to the rest of the album. "No Fun" and "1969" were the best tracks.
I know of the Stooges, but I don't know if I've ever heard a song from them before. I was surprised at the overall mellow (noisy, but mellow) nature of the album. I was also suprised to find a track that was longer than 10 minutes. At best, some of the tracks made it into the 'okay' range. The album wasn't terrible, but I could easily say 'no' to listening to this album again.

One classic tune, a stand-out moment in punk, but a very uneven album overall.
Did not care much for this album, although I still like the song I Wanna Be Your Dog. It had more psychedelic elements than I expected, reminding me of the Doors in some parts. The music just didn't engage me enough, and therefore felt quite dragging and repetitive.
Iggy Pop is pretty good! I learned that last week. This album though, isn't as good. It's really primitive, even compared to the already proto-punk proto-ness of his later work. A lot of these songs feel like concepts, ideas, good ideas but just not ones that are yet formed into full songs. One of the songs on this album is a full ten minutes (We Will Fall) and in that time there is just about no progression or building up of any sort in the song, it just keeps going and doesn't end. That's not to say there aren't good songs on here, there are, but overall this isn't an appealing listen. There are things to appreciate for how influential the album was though, so I don't feel justified giving it a low score.
I really don't understand all the fuzz in here but its a matter of personal opinion and taste. For me It's a mediocre album with mediocre lyrics and kind of ok music. Save time and go to the next album.
It's a very interesting sound, but not one that I would especially like to visit in future.

Way ahead of their time, this album would fit right into the 90s scene. Wasn't a big fan of "We Will Fall" as it was a long dirge, but the other tunes are full of energy and swagger. Great album, added quite a few to the playlist.

Derrière le nom de Stooges était bien évidemment dissimulé notre Iggy Pop préféré. L'intro de l'album entonne le bruit d'une malle qui roule vers nous avant de s'ouvrir et de dévoiler le corps d'Iggy totalement contorsionné à l'intérieur. Il sort alors sa jambe d'un mètre cinquante, puis fait suivre celle de quarante centimètres et se tient enfin debout dans sa position signature : le bassin penché sur le côté et vers l'avant. La suite du projet n'en est que plus étonnante. Le talon vient toucher l'oreille, le bout du nez s'insère dans le nombril, et tout cela avec une facilité folle. Un album culte de la part d'un Iggy Pop totalement invertébré.
Un Iggy Pop plus courbé que jamais au sein de cet album. Il parvient même lors de la piste 5 à toucher son talon avec sa tête, avant de rapidement remettre sa chaussure de compensation et ainsi retrouver un équilibre parfait.

I actually really enjoyed this music style, despite the singing seeming "off" in certain songs. His voice works so well with most of the songs and I feel like if the sound mixing had been better in others (with the vocals meshing better with the music instead of sounding like mediocre karaoke), I would have given it an extra star.
Honestly the first song was alright, then the album just kept going and sounding the same. And it wasn't a good "same" sound. This music is not for me, would rather listen to my son's musical toys on repeat.

Solid debut album. 1969 and be your dog both brilliant starts to the album, we will fall very long and a bit dull. Album picks up again with no fun. Not sure about real cool time, little Ann nice way to finish the album. Overall love the vibe of the album.
Notes: listened to this album at work, and at home. Man, this album oozes energy. I've read that this album precedes punk by a LOT, and it shows; 35 minutes of pure noisy rock, all killer, no filler. And to think, this came out the same year as Abbey Road and Tommy! What a counterpoint to those two. Favorite track: No Fun

An excellent debut album from the Stooges, who burn out of the gate with two rocking classics in 1969 and I Wanna Be Your Dog! The momentum and energy slows right down with We Will Fall, which times out for a third of the album, but fortunately the rest of the record redeems itself. Otherwise, this would be 5 stars, plus the next two albums are even better!

Absolutely can’t stand Iggy Pop so this was very much a ‘duty listen’. Turns out that I Wanna Be Your Dog, No Fun & Real Cool Time are very listenable, & the clear pre-punk influence was interesting. Nowhere near as awful as I was expecting.

This album must have been mind-blowing when it came out. It sounds so out of place for something that was released in 1969. It's more akin to what 1960's punk music would have sounded like but we are still nearly 10 years away from punk music hitting the scene. Favorite Tracks: "I Wanna be Your Dog" "No Fun" "Little Doll"

Initially, I thought this resembled a half baked pastry. Reading the Wikipedia article helped put things into context a little, but I'd have to give this one another listen to get a bit more out of it.
Alongside Velvet Underground & Nico, these two albums inspired an entire generation of randoms like you and me to pick up a guitar and belt off a song. Instead of going with the norm of highly produced albums of the time, this album went with a more lofi loud and experimental approach, and did so quite successfully with solid tracks mostly all throughout. The first two are classics. Perfect songs that deserve their notoriety based on their inspiration on the youth generation and their heavy punk and metal sound despite being in the 60s. Then we get into a psychedelic track that goes on for the entire rest of the first side which honestly flies by but I can see how this can seem boring to primitive people. Then we get into another "fun" proto-punk classic. After that, the songs slow down in terms of power and innovation but are still just as raw. "Real Cool Time" and "Ann" were probably the only songs I did not care for as much, but the album works from start to finish. An album I can't get tired of no matter how many listens.

Didn’t particularly enjoy this one. It’s got a familiar feel to artists that came later so I assume it’s on this list as an influence. On its own though I find it pretty forgettable.
Don't even really need to isten to this album again as I've listened to it so much. But then again, I'm always looking for a reason to listen to it again. I love this album, 1969, I wanna be your dog, and real cool time. There isn't really a bad song here. I can feel the influence of this album in a lot of music. Proto-punk for sure. It's awesome, and not even my favorite Stooges album. I highly recommend their music to everyone.
its worth its votes just for the 3 all time banger tunes. it's also very good how their shit tracks are so aggressively shit that you admire them instead of hate them. most bands filler tracks just fluff around and don't do anything. the stooges don't do that type of disappearing into the background.
I remember queuing outside my local record store in the pissing rain on the day this was released. Me and my mate Ortisse pooled our pocket money together and bought this album. We skipped all the way home, hand in hand and couldn't wait to play the damn thing. Full of fizzy cola, we couldn't hold back our grins as we danced around the room, playing air guitar. Ortisse later hanged himself in the bathroom.
Before Iggy was a big wrinkly bag of skin. Hurtles towards you like a firework in a skip.

The Stooges are often cited as a major influence on punk, and I get why. The songs are deceptively basic and simple, but the main reason is probably Iggy's attitude, which is the platonic ideal of a sullen, vaguely hostile, bored teenager. The lyrics match: "Well, it's 1969, okay All across the USA It's another year for me and you Another year with nothing to do" Thankfully, there is more to The Stooges than that. For one thing, the rhythms, while primal, are tight. The other thing that differentiates The Stooges is the wall of noise emanating from Ron Ashton's guitars. Yes, there was fuzz, distortion and wah wah before this, but Ashton puts it to an entirely new use. He smears layers of fuzz, distortion, and wah wah over the songs the way a brutalist painter would smear colors with a palette knife, creating a thick texture that Iggy floats over. Iggy even wrote about Ashton in the song Dum Dum Boys: "Now I'm looking for The dumb dumb boys Where are you now When I need your noise" A lot of people say that this album is uneven, which would be a major problem with an album that's only 35 minutes long, but I've got to be honest--I love every minute of it, even the obvious space filler, We Will Fall. Why? I guess I would say because everything in the album, the aggressiveness, the brutalism, Iggy's sullen vocals, the lyrics, the primal rhythms, and Ron Ashton's masterful color work all combine synergistically to put across the theme of teenage alienation as perfectly as you could possibly want. And besides, it's a blast to listen to.
I did not like Iggy that much but this one is pretty solid!

A perfectly fine album to hang out and shoot up to, but despite being only 34 minutes long—and that's including a 10 minute track that seems to exist just to make this more than an EP—a lot of the songs blur together. Maybe it's by design (the opening track's complaints of "nothing to do" come to mind), but it'd be nice if there were more tracks than I Wanna Be Your Dog that stood out musically. This is is the worst album to introduce someone to The Stooges and possibly solo Iggy but a neat album for those already a fan of better albums in the band's oeuvre. album's solid if not life altering, but an interesting look at the band while they were still finding their voices.

As paleolithic and raw as rock and roll gets. So much to enjoy here, but the fact the final track sounds more like a Tibetan funerary drone than pop music is the icing on the cake.

Eh, not for me. The first track was ok, the second track was too repetitive, and the third track was...?! Then the rest was just blah.
Not my usual listening, but was intrigued on how I could hear the seeds of punk, shoegaze, and new wave. The influence of the Doors as well as artists such as Bo Diddley were apparent.
