Reviews (page 6 of 8)
Sounds surprisingly fresh from being from 1969. Especially "I Wanna be your Dog" which has something so menacing and cool about it, it even manages the bowl cuts to nearly look cool. The rest of the album is not quite as good but still decent given when it was made. "1969" is the second best track and then the rest kind of fall off.
Saved 5/8 songs. Some great fuzzy, psychedelia. Couple of tracks just didn't do it for me.
I Wanna Be Your Dog is a banger, but nothing else really stood out. Simpsons reference: not really.
Enjoyable album. Not sure about the 10-minute track. Some of the guitar reminds me of Jimi Hendrix. Will have to listen to more of them in the future.
Ok
This stands out a bit from some of the early punk albums, in terms of sound. They really took what the Velvet Underground were doing and went even grungier. Apart from that, it's not super interesting though. Really basic lyrics and kinda creepy in places, given what we know now about Iggy's fondness for underage girls. That slow jam song is really boring too.
The band name and album cover do not match the music 3
I'm not sure if the Stooges really rise above the noise. It's solid late-60s-early-70s psychedelic, pop, punk - but I'm not sure they did it better than most other bands at the time. Good album, I'm just not sure it warrants being on the list as a "must listen"
Enjoyable album
Interesting - melodic punk
I like garage rock so I was totally on board with this until We Will Fall. Way too long and indulgent. They bounced back to some degree with the rest of the album but still
the album didnt really do anything for me but i get the significance of this music heavy driving music in 1969
Punk, pre-grunge and psychedelia with anger, angst and humor from the fountain head.
Some fun.
Not my jam but not bad
Liked it! Similar to Alice Cooper vibes, but doesn't quite hit the same. Would listen again, but not my number 1 or 2 so far from the list 💜
it's interesting and there's some nice songs but there's also some weird songs like "we will fall". was a pleasant listen but wouldn't put it on myself again
Solid
The infant stages of punk. The Stooges were still finding their feet here— they wouldn’t hit their stride until their next album. There are some great songs on this one, but there’s also the tremendously dull We Will Fall (Asleep?), a ten minute momentum killer that feels way more like a John Cale song than a Stooges jam. (Hey, I like John Cale. It just feels out of the place on this album.) But let’s all agree that I Wanna Be Your Dog is one of the greatest song titles in rock n roll.
An okay listen and starts well with 1969 and I wanna be your dog. I didn't realise that No Fun was a Stooges number, I actually think the Pistols version is better. After that it gets very samey and to my mind lacks the spark of the superior Fun House.
Well, they say that the first taste is with the eye - what an album cover! lol I fucking love the track - wanna be your dog - and came across it on the lock stock soundtrack. I love Iggy pop but don’t listen to him much
This has some great tracks on it - and I quite liked it! Not one that I think I'd listen to as a full album again, but 'I wanna be your dog' is a great track that I'll continue to come back to again and again. I'm not sure why Iggy Pop isn't labeled a sex offender - "At age 23, Pop had a relationship with 13-year-old" - it's pretty messed up. Fave track: I wanna be your dog
This is fine. Experimental psychedelic rock at its finest. A 10 minute track with some moans and groans. Guitar work is pretty great throughout.
Nearly not as bad as I thought it would be. 3.5/5
3.5
Ok
good album, but kinda forgettable
Some long songs. That will probably grow on me. I liked the singles a lot. Some of the songs sounded similar. I am glad they contributed to proto-punk, but no songs that I will add to rotation. Probably a 6.8/10.
listen to this when you want to feel like a badass walking down the street
Kinda meh on this one. I enjoyed parts of it but a lot of the songs were pretty one note and dragged on. Especially the 10 minute song. I did appreciate the brevity of the other songs though. After going through a few long albums recently a 30 minute album felt nice. I expected to like this more than I actually did.
Good but expected more
Big missed opportunity with the production on this one. Would have loved to hear these songs recorded in the funhouse style. Still pretty good but the least of the Stooges original work.
The Stooges, otherwise know as, The Rolling Stones *psych-rock version.
Never sat down and listened to this album as a whole. . . Iggy Pop is a legend and the Stooges are so influential! The music is ahead of its time. It feels hard, a little groovy, but with an edge that is in direct opposition to the hippy aesthetic of the time - sign of the decay setting in and an omen of what was to come in the mid-70's. Meh. . . The album is not worth re-listening to, imho.
We Will Fall was way too long. Actually, most of the songs felt a bit long. Otherwise I enjoyed it a bit.
cool album and a few of the tracks familiar (i want to be your dog from the cruella movie), but a few tracks not as interesting. 3.1/5
Good stuff. Grungy relaxing angry
The Stooges.
Would have liked a lot more if the dirge had been split up and interspersed between other tracks in the album. An otherwise solid album with a 10 minute egg splattered right in the middle of it.
Pretty solid album with a couple of real bangers. l enjoyed the music side of things more than the lyrics or vocal performances though
60’s rock. They sounded like they had fun recording it.
The instrumentation was okay but I don't find Iggy pop's voice very appealing.
Nothing mind blowing, but still groovy. We Will Fall felt so out of place, but that makes it fun!
Absolutely the start of a revolution. Glad there are multiple Stooges albums on here to hear the path from Rock to this proto-punk and at times psychedelic album. We Will Fall really caught me for a surprise; I would never have expected a 10 minute song on this album. This album isn't perfect, but it is a landmark
Fav track is NO Fun
Good
Gloriously juvenile garage rock. Sometimes they sound like a filthy rolling stones tribute act, sometimes they're inventing punk, sometimes they're off on a psychadelic adventure. The guitar is way stripped back and basic, like a kid who just got a fuzz pedal and a wah wah going nuts with it. Some quick and nasty solos and some pretty straightforward but thoroughly effective riffs - I wanna be your dog especially. Iggy Pop is basically a fully formed punk front-man on his debut, a limited singer but all drawling-snarling throat shredding charisma.
I’d say this album was ahead of its time as I don’t actually believe it was released in 1969 since it sounds more early 70’s. Iggy’s haircut would suggest otherwise.
meh
Historically important. Incredibly powerful. Very interesting. But sonically jarring - which was the point.
Part garage rock, part psychedelic rock. I like the garage parts. The psychedelic parts are boring. Favorite song: I wanna be your dog.
Me ha gustado, no me ha encantado. Vivan las drogas de los 60.
first two songs are great, rest is whatever
Pretty good. But felt bit dated.
A highly influential classic but just wasn't feeling it this time for some reason. A little samey-samey.
Imma take my shirt off just like Iggy; Actual: not bad if you're into Fuzzy guitar riffs and such. Iggy is an icon so worth a listen if you are into classic rock. Raw Power is where you start to get into Iggy being Iggy, but this is a nice precursor to what is to come.
Like at most, I think this was fine. Some songs were stronger than others, and I can see the value of an album like this, but I don't know if it holds up.
It starts off strong with 1969 and the firecracker that is I Wanna Be Your Dog Then rather fizzles a bit but is still pretty strong
3.5
That one song long af
It’s a vibe but not for everyday, situational
Cat: cool vibe, classic shit, pretty good AJ: I’m all for some distortion. Rhythm section doesn’t quit. Iggy is useless. 10 minute “song” of the same noises and grunts in the 3 spot? Stupid. Some cool sounds, not for me.
This feels like the missing link between the psychedelic rock of the Doors and the garage rock/punk of the Ramones. Primal, raw, flipping a middle finger to melody. I can appreciate this album's influence on indie rock in the coming years, but this just ain't my bag as a person who is a sucker for a good pop melody and more sophisticated chord progressions. "We Shall Fall" has a "Riders on the Storm" feel but seems a few minutes longer than necessary. "Little Doll" is the best sounding song on the album, sticking to a catchy bass line and narrow structure.
1969 has a cool intro
Feels like I listened to a Stooges album recently. Did I need another one? Probably not.
had some gnarly guitar parts, i liked some of the slower bits but his vocals were not my favourite. imagine this is a slower burn to get into
Forgettable: can't really remember that much from this record but from what I can it was just meh. I'm not going to completely write it off my musical listening but I kinda of want to listen to more. Just ended up feeling underwhelmed expecting some more deep-cut rock music.
The Stooges went on to do much more interesting work. This record works well, but somehow drags on even with a reasonable run time. We Will Fall is 10 minutes of the same drum beat and baseline, kinda kills side one. Most songs suffer from monotonous melodys.
I wanted and expected to enjoy this album but it is a bit too juvenile. The first two songs do have some clarity and charm. Unfortunately that charm runs out rapidly and pretty soon the songs are just repetitive and tiresome. That said, this album definitely still belongs on this list, I have no quibble there.
It is time I heard this . Quite the Ouvre from the taught skinned naughty little doggie. Genetics are cruel. an intersting listen
Solid album
“We Will Fall” was a trial on my commute to work but there are some solid songs here.
Fair bit of noise in this one
3.0 Kinda boring tbh, the singles were fun but all the songs were the same and while this is a revolutionary album that pretty much took what the kinks were doing and put distortion onto it to make it punk, it doesn't do much else. Fave songs: 1969, i wanna be your dog
I'm a fan of Iggy Pop, but I don't think this album holds up anywhere near as well as "Raw Power" and the like. Obviously, "I Want to be your Dog" is a stone-cold classic, and there is stuff to enjoy here, but it's not one that I'll find myself going back to all too often.
nothing to write home about but nothing outwardly terrible. more bands should throw in a 10+ minute song into a 35 minute album
Weird and dark. World music influenced (We Will Fall seems to draw some of its key, chant and hurdy-gurdy drone from India, but it's hard to say), introspective and navel-gazing. Fuzzy guitars are fully incorporated. Songs are more rambling and less focused than '73's Raw Power, but the march toward punk is fully underway. The writing is simple and draws on 50s pop and rock structures, including chord progressions, call & responses and lyrical content in many places (seemingly teenage love, for example). There's no effort to keep the vocals or guitars clean, though.
3,5.
Half good songs half shit
Nice
Love the Stooges. This one is a little flat for me but interesting for the time.
Better than I expected, some thing I liked some I didnt
Bien. Estilo Rolling
I started off liking this but they lost me in the middle. I can appreciate that this was probably crazy back then but it doesn’t hold up today.
IGGY POP! i loved his album this year and he came a long way too. tbh only 2 songs were really stcking to me
3 y haciéndoles el favor
okiii 7.5/10
Wtf is We Will Fall?
Bien. Estilo Rolling
"We Will Fall" kind of ruined the vibe, but solid
Muutama saatanan tehokas biisi, mutta ihmiset rakastavat enemmän Stoogesin ideaa kuin heidän ideoitaan, millä on omat rajoitteensa. Ehdoton suosikki: 1969.
Decent enjoyable album
1969 doesn't start off as revolutionarily as you might expect but you know that you're into something else by the end of the title track. It is further confirmed once I Wanna Be Your Dog comes on. The record might suffer some from the sequencing that puts the next track on deck at 10 minutes. The song also reminds us that we shouldn't reimagine the Stooges as an only a proto-punk band forging some template of bravado and brevity but rather a band from another era who helped usher in punk rock with some of its songwriting and attitude.
I get it
Några bra bangers men också lite tråkig imellan legenda though no cap
pretty fun album, middle song called we will fall is on a completely different level for some reason
Innovative record for sure, but with only a few great moments overall. Nothing compared to something like Fun House. I mean... The worst song of the album last 10 minutes out of 30.
Very raw sound, I can see why this is so influencing album
Some interesting guitar solos on this album, that's for sure, but otherwise very average record. To be honest, I didn't like anything else other than solos. Definitely a relic of olden times, that happens to be on this list, because 1000 albums is an enormous number, so some mediocre stuff has to make its way in as well. On to the next one.
Þetta er allt í lagi. Ekki þeirra besta stöff.
Lots of seeds being planted here, and I have huge historical respect for this album. That being said, there's a lot of fat to trim off the true meat of this album.
Some good, some a bit depressing
Some good tracks
it was short and sweet and consistent, but some of the songs were meh to me, like 'we will fall', and 'ann', very slow
Duller than expected. All a bit samey and Iggy didn't seem to be connected to what the Stooges were doing at all.
I wouldn’t go any more than fine for this.
more of a Rolling Stones clone in the 60s musically their look is pretty ahead of their time though
When I listened to this back in 2019, I remember it having a much bigger impact than this most recent listen. It is decent, and for 1969 way ahead of its time, but for some reason it isn't resonating as much in 2023 for me
There's raw power in the simplicity, but there's an overall effect of simplistic-ness. It's not hard to believe they wrote the songs in two days. One suspects Cale saved them from themselves, and perhaps even made the record. Iggy sounds like he's channeling Jagger and Reed, and Mark Smith of the Fall, doubtlessly imitating Iggy Pop sound more like Iggy Pop than Iggy did – or rather, how Iggy should have sounded. Stooges would be downhill from here.
Ajoittain aika psykedeelistä settiä, mutta parempaa stoogesia. We will fall jännä ja I wanna be your dog kova
I’m so messed up I want you here.
Not their best album. A couple of good songs but also a couple of bad ones.
In general, my enjoyment of punk-related albums is inversely correlated to its similarity to punk. This punk-precursor didn't sound that punkish and was thus somewhat enjoyable. The guitars were even pretty good, although the vocals definitely weren't. Would give this 3.5 stars on its own merits, but rounding down to its influence on horrible music through the decades.
Good sound overall, you can tell it stood out for its time but just didn't hit the same levels as other rock bands of the time.
The fact that the worst song takes up 10 out of the 35 minutes is inexcusable, but the rest of it is a solid early punk album.
All over the place but what you’d expect from a great early punk album with some high highs and low lows. Distortion was amazing and drums were perfect accents to iffy pops unique vocals.
An album that sounds much more recent than the year suggests... until you get to track 3! Some ionic songs!
Quite enjoyed this - way ahead of its time and must've been very influential.
"Real Cool Time" was actually kinda hard to get through"
A few tracks are up there, but others make it average. Not my favorite album, but glad I listened to it
It was alright. Nothing really noteworthy. I don't believe I knew any of the songs. It was better than a 2, but not a 3. I will round up.
I really like the guitar work and fuzziness of the guitar.
You can tell a boomer made a majority of this list because most of the albums are from before 1990. If you told me that this album was made in a day I would believe you. Most of these songs sound like they were made almost on the spot. Especially the lyrics. This feels like "Baby's first rock band" This isn't offensively bad, but man if it isn't super shallow and boring. The instrumentation is the saving grace, and even then it isn't anything to write home about. I actually enjoy the less popular song on this album more because they feel more focused and have a less "I just put this together" sound. For the 60's this is pretty out there and experimental I guess so it has merit for paving the way for a lot of bands that have used their style Was going to give this a 2, but might just be a low 3
Never listened to the stooges, enjoyed this though! 3.5
Pretty average other than the one good song.
A few good tracks here.
Strong start but quickly got ugly and messy. Definitely pioneering but maybe dial the drugs back a notch?
I think this is super cool! The fuzzy proto-punk stuff is fun, sometimes it can feel a bit confused but that's ok. "We Will Fall" is super cool and I really shows the album's great psychadellic influences, which i think work super well in this context actually.
The Stooges is such a great name for a band. I like Iggy Pop plenty and appreciate his place in rock n' roll lore. I enjoyed lots of this album as well, the opener is probably my fave. I also found it a little tedious and just a little too raw and simple to turn me on. And Iggy seems to have sex on the brain just as much as Def Leppard wants to ROCK. This is one of those bands that is over-represented on this list (three albums). I'm going out on a limb to guess this isn't the best of the three.
Pretty heavy. Didn’t grip me, but I might try it again.
I wanna be your dog".
Iggy Pop is a creep
Would have given 3.5, smackhead drone ruined the vibe tho
Punky garage rock album that has a certain grit to it with the vocals and guitar tone especially. Starts off with a couple of classics before the momentum is ground to a halt with We Will Fall which is so long, plodding, and goes nowhere. Other than that the rest are not too bad while retaining the feel of the first two songs.
Pretty good listen. I like Iggy's voice a lot. That iconic punk sound from New York. I knew a couple going in but I found a song that I like.
Interesting album. First couple of tracks are reminiscent of the Rolling Stones, but then you get the haunting We Will Rock, and then it morphs into a proto-punk, some years before "proper" punk arrived on the scene.
Grunge in the time of bell bottoms. I Wanna Be Your Dog is such a banger, it almost makes up for the weird 15min chant thing in the middle of this album. Almost.
I can understand that this would be ground breaking at the time. With the way pedals and heavy distortion guitars shreeking and groaning. The vocals are mostly conversational and commanding. This is definitely reminiscent of early Rolling Stones and you can understand why British rock reused this formula for decades. It works. For me personally it became repetitive and droned on for more time that I could engage myself in it. 1969 and I wanna be your dog were personal faves, but unless the album kept on like this I am resigned to a middle score. Perhaps if I had been born in a different time.
Very important, and not quite what I expected. Good, but not great, but with a clear place on this list for its importance and for being such an influential work.
Not going to add it to my playlists, but I feel like a lot of the tracks would be good if I were adding music to montages in nostalgic films. I like that each song has its own character.
I can see how this would have had an impact in 1969 but I don't think I need to listen to it again.
Some good songs, not for me though
For how short this project is, it accomplishes a lot and blends together so many fusions of rock, punk, and psychedelic music in general. Saying that, parts of this album do drag and go on too long but really appreciate the risks it takes and when it hits, its really good. Worth the listen
1969 - this seems way ahead of it's time. Rough and raw, I can't imagine how that would have sounded up against the country folk coming out of Neil Young etc. Not one I'm going to listen to again, but can hear influences on a lot of music I do love.
HL: "1969", "Dog", "Real Cool Time", "We Will Fall" Last thing I expected from this album was 10+ minutes of drone music! Huh 3.5 February 15, 2023
Great 60s vibe
Solid album, nothing crazy.
This band is definitely important, but not everything clicked on their debut. They wear their influences on their sleeves, sounding like a half-rate Doors (Ann) or MC5 (1969) at times. It has its moments for sure, but they didn’t really come into their own until Fun House, which is miles ahead of this.
2/10- Driving to School
What a fascinating and cool album. Really a different early punk(?) sound. We Will Fall was the standout for me. Just weird and like chanting monks meet Apocalypse Now. I thought the album was definitely worthwhile.
There is so much potential here and a lot to like. Ultimately, I bumped this down from 4 to 3 because it just didn't feel like a cohesive album. More like a starting point that could go lots of different directions.
This seems like a softer version of their later, full developed punk sound. Parts of this I like a lot. Others are just so so. This is a solid 3.5. We Will Fall is a great concept, but 10+ minutes is too long. At that length it’s a slight detriment. If it had been 4 min, what a bonus! Liking anything Iggy Pop was involved in is still one of the biggest surprises of the 1001 experience. This one is pretty good, but after three listens it didn’t quite make it to a 4.
Songs are drawn out slightly too long. Feels like the most interesting parts are at the end and never stick around long enough. Lyrics are a bit repetitive which makes the songs feel slow. Second half of the album picks up the pace but not enough for this to be in my rotation. Will probably come back too when i need a good punk fix.
The second Stooges album I've reviewed on this generator. This one feels less polished than the other one I listened to (Fun House). I was never a huge fan of the Stooges, but understand that what they were doing was mind blowing at the time. Imagine living in early 60's America, listening to the swinging rock n roll of Elvis Presley and Buddy Holly, then hearing this! It must have been crazy! These guys were creating the beginnings of punk rock with their fuzzy guitars, heavy drums, and almost screamed vocals. That coupled with Iggy's predisposition to self mutilation at his live shows! Overall, a revolutionary album, but not my favourite. I do, however, understand how important this album and band was to music. The first half of the album was stronger than the second I thought. Favourite songs: I Wanna Be Your Dog, 1969 Least favourite song: We Will Fall 3/5
I think the streak of 4 and 5 star albums has come to an end with this one. The vocals were boring but the production was great for the most part. That we will fall song was god awful and ruined any chance this album had of getting a 4 but the rest was alright.
The stooges Their debut album came weeks after James Newell Osterberg Jr changed his name to Iggy Pop. Inspired by a practical joke by a band member who wants to remain nameless, Osterberg noticed how funny it was that a sneaky, inconspicuous bifter exploded in his own face. Watching all his peers literally shit their trousers with laughter and feeling Ciggy Pop was too on the nose, he made the decision there and then to drop the C and change his name. So to was born, Iggy Pop - king of the human terrapins. Iggy (artist formally known as Jay) was said to have found the inspiration for his first song in the bottom of a Sour Cream & Onion Pringles tin. Noting how, if he gently spoke into it whilst tickling the bottom, it would reverb in a G Minor Diminished Sparkle. No such note appears in 1969, but it made him wonder “what if?” Pop wrote the majority of the album in the back of a Citroen Xara that had been converted into a really small, but reasonable air BnB. He used a banana with lead punched into the bottom as his pencil, and a sheet of bounty for his paper. Both We Will Fall and Real Cool Time were written in Wing Dings, size 14. Pop went on to try and nab the talents of world renowned music producer Rick Ruben for his input on the latter half of the album. The band though, found his input lacking, partly due the creative differences and also because Rick was a 5 year old child at the time of recording. The album itself received rave reviews - not necessarily amazing, but all conducted during a rave. An approach that music critics soon abandoned in the mid 70s due to discrepancies appearing in most scribe notes that used the method. Following the success of the album, Iggy Pop fancied a name change again and it wasn’t too long, in fact - In nineteen ninety eight, where undertaker threw mankind off hell in a cell and plummeted sixteen feet through an announcer’s table. 3 stars out of 5.
first listen it's alright
It's amazing to hear this and see where so many bands got their ideas from. "I Wanna Be Your Dog" sounds like a Damned song, "No Fun" has them sound like the Ramones, along with "Real Cool Time." It's amazing to see (or hear) where this all started. Having said that, "We Will Fall" I'm sure it seemed like a good idea at the time. But 10 minutes? Yikes. "Ann" is the same, way too much there. "1969" kinda reminds me of Pearl Jam for some reason. The vocals have that Vedder vibe. Except the scream at the end, which sounds goofy now. The shorter songs work better for me than the longer songs, as they begin to meander a bit. Pretty interesting to hear one of the beginning documents of punk, coming out 6 or 7 years before that explosion. So I would pick the few shorter songs, but a lot of it was just blergh (like "We Will Fall." That's half of a side right there. Com on guys, tighten that up some.
Once again The Stooges produce an album with so much promise in the first couple tracks...and then F it up with their self-indulgent crap after that. 1969 is a great tune - it's as if they took psychedelia and twisted it into something new. I Wanna Be Your Dog is my favorite of all Stooges songs - almost has a Velvet Underground feel (which isn't my scene) but more melodic and punchier. And then the heroin kicks in and we get the terribly strung out We Will Fall. 10 minutes of it to boot. Ugh. Side two starts off ok with No Fun, but it too is longer than it needs to be. Real Cool Time, Not Right, and Little Doll are decent but Ann is another tragedy - they are better when they try to reinvent psychedelia not embrace it. So really we're talking two brutal tracks and two killer ones, with some good tracks in between. I think I'll mostly pass on any Stooges album and just take their greatest hits (not sure it can fill a whole album).
All a bit samey really - not that I was expecting prog-style landscapes of sonic magic, but I guess, as garage music goes, it's pretty good. Really dirty grooves with some wonderful touches of guitar magic
it’s cool, we will fall is a vibe favorite songs: i wanna be your dog, ann
It's gor that dated reverb and wow sound
This was a fairly solid album. Some of the experimental stuff droned on a little long, but it was an inspiration for many bands and has been cited numerous times as one of the most essential albums to begin the punk era. Personally, I enjoyed most of the tracks and will listen to some, not all, again. It was pretty enjoyable, but I don't think it really deserves to score that high. 3/5
Oh Iggy. A little slow.
I mean they seem cool and everything. There’s just nothing I wanna listen to again
Not quite as good as their other albums that I've heard, but a solid debut nonetheless
Always interesting to see what these guys were creating almost a decade before punk in the modern sense came to be. But not special enough in songwriting to take it higher than 3 stars.
A very Rolling Stones-esque album by The Stooges which has a good runtime however fails to leave any lasting impression with any of their songs to justify more than 3 stars.
Great band, but not that great of an album beyond I Wanna Be Your Dog honestly
A strong start that really took a turn. I wondered what happened and then I remembered heroin is a thing. Influential for sure.
Following the groundwork laid by The Sonics in the 1960's, The Stooges would close out the 60's with their own raw sound that is no fondly remembered as "proto-punk". Key to this is singer Iggy Pop, who would go on to make his own mark in music history after The Stooges. His electric personality would set the bar for many punk singers to match that same energy in performance. I will also give credit to Ron Asheton and his knack for interpolating other bands' riffs for The Stooges songs. There are some bonafide classics on here that would go down in history as some of the greatest punk songs before punk even existed. Opening tracks 1969 and I Wanna Be Your Dog are powerful, noisy, and memorable. Side A is, however, grounded to a halt with the 10-minute slow psych jam We Will Fall, which does very few interesting things during it's runtime. Listeners at the time were either switching to side B pretty quick or were too stoned to bother. Either way, it's not very good. Side B straddles the proto-punk/psych rock line as The Stooges struggle to find their sound. While many of their songs are still good, the huge psych influence of the late 60's caused things to lose focus. Their followup in 1970, Fun House, would be more focused and refined in it's noisy sound. For now though, this is still a fine album and certain one worth listening to.
More Psychedelic than I was expecting
Ok psychedelic rock. Some fun riffs, would listen again
I like the later stuff better.
Some very solid early punk. I think I prefer their later work but this is classic.
Some cool jams on this one.
Never got into the Stooges though they would seem to be in my wheelhouse. I liked this, felt a little less tolerant of long experimental slogs like We Will Fall than I do with similar indulgences by say the Velvet Underground. And generally find this a little slack and undercooked, but then that’s Punk right?
Solid album, smooth listen, a little different eccentric rock album. 6/10
You can hear the migration from rock to punk
There are some really cool sonorities as some length and repetitions I though, I think it's a good rock album but not every track is a hit and there are some quite off miss such as We will fall or Ann. Nice listen overall but nothing crazy. 2.75/5
Some good songs on this, knocking a mark for putting a 10 minute rubbish song on a 30 minute album
Couple of hits.
I've listened to raw power before and I didn't think too much of it so wasn't expecting to like this either...... However was pleasantly surprised. Doesn't sound like it was made in 1969, can see how it was the inspiration for a lot of punk. The first 2 tracks are great.
Unconditional for the time or now, obviously influential as I can’t imaging anything sounding so loud and raw at the time, now it just feels like a lot of the music it influenced. Worth a listen within context
Come per l'altro album mi aspettavo tutt'altro, però forse l'ho preferito a questo.
3/5 it was okay
Good album to start a work week. Listened again to start today. 1969 and I want to be your dog are fantastic openers. Really liked No fun and Little doll too. One WTF song was We will fall. Just didn't seem like it belonged with this album and was way too long Enjoyed and would listen again. A good 3 to 3.5 for me. Will record as 3 because if we will fall.
3.5 It's clear how much influence The Stooges and Iggy Pop had on punk music with this album - Hell, the Sex Pistols would even go on to do a cover of No Fun. This has all the makings of a solid punk record - 1969 is a great track and opener, I Wanna Be Your Dog is a Stooge classic... then I'm not really sure what was going on in We Will Fall. The 10-minute psychedelic noisescape track was kind of an unnecessary and jarring shift for me. No Fun is a good start to Side B, but not much after that jumped out to me. Solid protopunk album, but nothing spectacular. Favorite songs: 1969, I Wanna Be Your Dog, No Fun
A decent album overall but more of an influential album that has affected music over the years. Like most Iggy Pop music this is good at times. Then there are songs where the lyrics are odd and banal. I did enjoy the instrumentals a bit more on this compared to his solo stuff. 6.2/10
according to wikipedia.. iggy: this is my soul elektra: we're not releasing this iggy: it's my baby elektra: your baby is ugly iggy: elektra: i can't believe we paid for your studio time iggy: ok what if it's at the end of side— elektra: you have other songs right? it's not just thirty minutes of moaning and aimless clapping? iggy: elektra: god help us iggy: no yeah we totally have other songs, just need to record them? elektra: you have one week and we're absolutely not publishing "we will fall"
Bit of a Doors vibe. Good for a once thru
Very clearly a small collection of songs padded by songs written over a weekend as it is that
Not the greatest garage rock record I’ve heard, but there are still some solid gems here. “We Will Fall” is not one of them - can’t believe this takes up a whole third of the entire runtime. Favourite Tracks: - I Wanna Be Your Dog - 1969 - Ann Overall Grade: 3/5
decent listening for proto-punk.
I have to admit, I was totally thrown for a loop by listening to this album. Growing up, I associated Iggy Pop / The Stooges with a more hardcore punk sound, but I couldn’t name a specific song if my life depended on it. I think it’s because he was infamous for his stage antics, but I was not expecting this Doors cover band soundalike. I really liked I wanna be your dog, not right, no fun. I wasn’t feeling the monk chanting if we will fall, which made up almost a third of the album’s length.
Middle of the road all the way for me. No tracks stood out except for "We Will Fall" which felt like a bizarre social experiment.
I wanna be your dog is a classic, but the rest I could take or leave
Hmmm... kind of interesting, psychadelic and punky, not sure it's "great" but I'm not a major punk fan.
Standouts: I Wanna Be Your Dog, No Fun, 1969. Ann almost sound like a Doors song for most of it. 3/5
I’m a big iggy pop fan, this album was just not it for me. A 10 minute track of nothing.
Pros: Most songs have a nice steady energy I can really vibe with. Cons: Songs can get a bit repetitive / go on too long for my taste. Noteable: The unsettling slow burn of We Will Fall is unlike anything I've heard before. The wanky messing around on the guitar stuff has never worked as well for me as it does on that track.
when this album popped up, my eyes rolled so far into the back of my head. Two british rock bands in a row? Come on...and they have the audacity to call themselves the stooges?? Though I appreciate there are four of them. But as I listened, I realized this wasn't a british rock band, nor was it a typical rock band. Very psychadellic which is par for 1969. I enjoyed this, and while there wasn't a lot of nuance or things that made it stand out, I enjoyed I Wanna Be Your Dog.
Meh. It’s okay; just not something that I’d make a special effort for.
The debut album by The Stooges is a solid hard rock album. It was a short album that I rushed through and plan om doing a deep dive one the album and the band in the future.
The album is at its best when it’s raw and wild. I didn’t get into this nearly as much as the other Stooges album we listened to, “Funhouse,” but it’s cool to hear them on their first album developing their strange, snarling style. I thought the 10-minute “We Will Fall” was going to build to something more. Not sure why they made that one so long when they could have snuck another song on the album instead.
Definitely a cool, rough, rock n' roll band! My issue is that it definitely loses my attention due to being so drone-y and repetitive. I mean, why is "We Will Fall" ten minutes long without ANY build up? When I saw the timestamp on it, I thought it was going to be some epic thing...
Some of The Stooges is cool, the first two tracks and No Fun are great, fuzzy overdriven 60s rock, but then there are songs like We Will Fall and Ann that are absolute dirge. 3/5, right bang in the middle.
Didn't look at the release date for this initially (although you'd have thought I'd get a clue from the first song!), but was very impressed when I did - this feels very ahead of its time (actually in places sounds really similar to the White Stripes album that I just listened to before this). Do I actually like it though? Not massively... can see that it's totally trailblazing, but didn't actually enjoy listening to it that much. The 11 minute track is absurd, even the first two tracks could probably have benefitted from being a bit shorter (but are still pretty good), and after that it's fine but doesn't below me away. 3/5 overall.
I love the attitude and the guitar's level of ferocity, but none of the songs really do anything for me on a soul level. Wanna go for a 4, but it's probably a 3 to these ears. Definitely an album that was a blueprint for punk.
Cool
Feels more trippy than punk, and DIY in the extreme. One appreciates the influence more than one enjoys the music. Not even Mark Smith of the Fall sounds as much like Mark Smith of the Fall as Iggy does here.
Introduction to the stooges. Noting major on this debut album but still good.
I can't say that I'm 100% delighted, I kept two songs from this album, but the song "really cool time" is somewhat reminiscent of to "I wanna be your dog", 6(7).5/10
I love the Stooges, but there are better albums
I listened to this a few times, but it failed to sink in. It was probably a very striking and innovative heavy rock album at the time, but similar & better examples of the style have been recorded since, making this less interesting to the ear of 2022. Rating: 2.5/5 Playlist track: I Wanna Be Your Dog Date listened: 16/05/22
I actually liked this. It gave me psychedelic punk Rolling Stones vibes.
Getting this so soon after Velvet Underground and Nico... it's so much like those cats with extra sneer. I really dig it. People were really into dirges in the 60s. If that track were like 6 minutes, this album is less than a half hour long. That's a little weak... but what remains is really good.
Alright proto-punk album. "1969" and "I Wanna Be Your Dog" were great but the rest of the album fell short for me. Though can definitely see how this has influenced more modern punk albums.
Fav. Song: 1969, Real Cool Time and Ann. Least favorite song: No right
Alright in places
This album was okay. As someone who isn't too familiar with Iggy Pop, I was very intrigued by his vocals on this album; they often reminded me of the fairly unique stylings of Mick Jagger -- if Mick Jagger did proto-punk style music. I can't recall ever having heard anyone sound like they are emulating Mick Jagger, intentionally or otherwise. On some of the slower songs, it reminded me a bit of some stylings that would become popular under the goth/new wave 80s umbrella. Overall, it seemed pretty ahead of its time, and probably the best listen of the proto-punk genre I've heard on this project so far. I'd rank this at about a 2.5/5, but will round up to 3.
Didn't amuse me. It wasn't a wasted time, but I didn't find anything gripping about this record. I quite enjoyed the psychedelic vibes, tho.
Raw and heavy. Obviously its influences down the years have been massive.
It was an okay album, but not great. "We Will Fall" was, by far, the standout track of the album and felt like the basis for everything GY!BE has done (and I mean that in a good way). +1 star just because of that track
I've never listened to this before. In fact, I don't think I've ever heard the original version of "I Wanna Be Your Dog" although I've heard it covered live at least a handful of times (latest by Guns N Roses last summer). Strange to see an 8-song, 34 minutes album with 1 song that is over 10 minutes long.
Not a huge Iggy fan but he has a few decent tracks. A three star-er I think
I literally know nothing about The Stooges so I was expecting unremarkable dad rock. It's more punky and psychedelic. There's that 10 minute long full-on psychedelic track "We Will Fall". I'm a fan of that kind of music, but I felt like like it was missing something. All the other songs were fairly unremarkable and unmemorable. "1969" was my favorite one, I think. "I Wanna Be Your Dog" was pretty unexciting despite apparently being the big famous hit. A 2.5/5 probably. I'll round it up.
Still not my bag
When I saw this I wasn’t impressed that it was the weekend album but when I listened it wasn’t too bad, even enjoyable ! 3*
The sleazy indie stuff was OK. Less keen on the experimental stuff in the middle...
1969 has a surprisingly modern sound but most of it washed over me without much impact.
whatever
It was good, it went from more to less for me, but can't hate any song called I wanna be your dog 3/5
A few songs grew on me the second listen to bump it from a 2 to a 3. It’s a bit more thrashy and experimental compared to other albums I’ve heard from this time which was a nice surprise. 5/10
Quite a mixture of styles here with clear influences of others around at the time.
My first 3. Also the higher one. So really good album added 1 song to one of my pl
'I wanna be your dog and eigenlijk nog meer No fun zijn echt top, de rest waren meer opvullers.
Die Iggy, lekker bezig!
Interessante
The Stooges' self-titled debut feels like a promising, yet underwhelming, first effort. While the grimy, distortion-heavy sound is neat and the rest of the instrumentation is solid, some of the guitar work leaves a bit to be desired. Songs like "I Wanna Be Your Dog" and "No Fun" would probably be (ironically) more fun to listen to if they weren't so repetitive. "We Will Fall" seems to be a collective head-scratcher to most, but I didn't mind it during my listens. Although it does have some sense of motion that carries it through it's 10-minute length, I have to ask why the hell would you make the long, droning psychedelic piece the third track after "1969" and "I Wanna Be Your Dog"? A lot of the vocal melodies leave a bit to be desired, like on tracks such as "Ann" and "Not Right", even if the former picks up towards the breakdown. Even with its shortcomings, "The Stooges" is still a solid record, elevated by the attitude behind the performances and its ahead-of-its-time sonic palette. BEST TRACKS: 1969, I Wanna Be Your Dog, Ann WORST TRACKS: No Fun, Little Doll
Thank you, 1001 Albums project, for continuing to introduce me either to so much music, most of which I just plain missed for my entire listening life. I also almost always read the linked Wikipedia entry for each album because I find it interesting to get the story behind the album. This is yet another album I just somehow never heard and knew nothing about. It's almost as old as I am, yet if someone told me it was from any one of several stops along the way, mostly in the punk, garage rock, indie rock, etc., world, I'd easily believe it. It's straightforward and fun, and although I don't have the knowledge to map out how many bands after sound a little or a lot like this, I'm sure it's a big number. Good raw and sometimes trippy rock. Gets a bit chaotic and noisy for me at times, but what they're doing in those moments fits with the album.
3.5
Not a lot of tracks, and a lot of them sound very similar. Nice sound, though. Best track: I Wanna Be Your Dog
Good but not great for the time period
Thought it was decent, I liked some moments.
3.5
One classic tune, a stand-out moment in punk, but a very uneven album overall.
Did not care much for this album, although I still like the song I Wanna Be Your Dog. It had more psychedelic elements than I expected, reminding me of the Doors in some parts. The music just didn't engage me enough, and therefore felt quite dragging and repetitive.
Iggy Pop is pretty good! I learned that last week. This album though, isn't as good. It's really primitive, even compared to the already proto-punk proto-ness of his later work. A lot of these songs feel like concepts, ideas, good ideas but just not ones that are yet formed into full songs. One of the songs on this album is a full ten minutes (We Will Fall) and in that time there is just about no progression or building up of any sort in the song, it just keeps going and doesn't end. That's not to say there aren't good songs on here, there are, but overall this isn't an appealing listen. There are things to appreciate for how influential the album was though, so I don't feel justified giving it a low score.
I really don't understand all the fuzz in here but its a matter of personal opinion and taste. For me It's a mediocre album with mediocre lyrics and kind of ok music. Save time and go to the next album.
Oi!
You don't really think of this style being out there in 1969. Easy to see how it evolved into The Ramones.
I actually really enjoyed this music style, despite the singing seeming "off" in certain songs. His voice works so well with most of the songs and I feel like if the sound mixing had been better in others (with the vocals meshing better with the music instead of sounding like mediocre karaoke), I would have given it an extra star.
Solid debut album. 1969 and be your dog both brilliant starts to the album, we will fall very long and a bit dull. Album picks up again with no fun. Not sure about real cool time, little Ann nice way to finish the album. Overall love the vibe of the album.
Enjoyed a lot. Iggy Pop fucks, and a lot of singer's owe a debt to him
Iconic for the genre I love the most and I’d never diss Iggy but some of the proggy stuff towards the back half of the album brought this down to a 3 for me. Imma go listen to Raw Power instead Fave tracks: “I wanna be your dog” “1969”
3/5
Eh
Fine, second song was banger but mostly fluff
Absolutely can’t stand Iggy Pop so this was very much a ‘duty listen’. Turns out that I Wanna Be Your Dog, No Fun & Real Cool Time are very listenable, & the clear pre-punk influence was interesting. Nowhere near as awful as I was expecting.
I luuv stoogin around
guess it's an important album but it's lost a lot of it's shock value during the last 700000000000000 years.
Moins bien que raw power
Punk royalty
Proto punk, not my jam though.
This album must have been mind-blowing when it came out. It sounds so out of place for something that was released in 1969. It's more akin to what 1960's punk music would have sounded like but we are still nearly 10 years away from punk music hitting the scene. Favorite Tracks: "I Wanna be Your Dog" "No Fun" "Little Doll"
it was alright
Rock stök
Initially, I thought this resembled a half baked pastry. Reading the Wikipedia article helped put things into context a little, but I'd have to give this one another listen to get a bit more out of it.
I love `I Wanna Be Your Dog`. Not in love with the rest of the album. 3.5/5 if I could.
I wanna be your dog didn’t even stand out to me :(
Solid debut but pales in comparison to their next two albums.
didn't resonate with me, it's not bad except for that 10 min track but it's also not great
A perfectly fine album to hang out and shoot up to, but despite being only 34 minutes long—and that's including a 10 minute track that seems to exist just to make this more than an EP—a lot of the songs blur together. Maybe it's by design (the opening track's complaints of "nothing to do" come to mind), but it'd be nice if there were more tracks than I Wanna Be Your Dog that stood out musically. I guess that's what you call a cohesive sound? Key Tracks: 1969, I Wanna Be Your Dog, No Fun
This is is the worst album to introduce someone to The Stooges and possibly solo Iggy but a neat album for those already a fan of better albums in the band's oeuvre. album's solid if not life altering, but an interesting look at the band while they were still finding their voices.
6/10. I can already tell they are going to be one of the bands that is thoroughly enamored with the idea that they can send sounds to just one side of my headphones if they want. The lyrics were certainly did not stand out as good, and indeed stood out as pretty uninspired and dull quite often, but it did sound pretty good throughout.
I liked 1969 alright but it was pretty boring overall. 6
Good, not great. "I Wanna be your Dog" being the memorable track and probably why the album was chosen.
Produced by John Cale. Some good stuff.
First few tracks promising then third track just droned on!
Not my usual listening, but was intrigued on how I could hear the seeds of punk, shoegaze, and new wave. The influence of the Doors as well as artists such as Bo Diddley were apparent.
I liked it but did not love it. I can imagine it being pretty exciting when it was first released.
Moody punk rock, can’t really go wrong.
Liked some tracks more than others
5/10 not my style
Thrilling in parts but drags in others.
