Un clásico
Too saucy
Previously rated: Purple Rain (4/5) ******************* I did not know this was a double album. The first three songs here (1999, Little Red Corvette, and Delirious) are great, and I have a lot of nostalgia for them as they were popular when I first started listening to music. Then we get to the sexually explicit Let's Pretend We're Married, and this is where I started to be put off. If it was just that track, I could overlook it, but the horniness and sex noises are sprinkled throughout the rest of the album. I was glad when it was over. I wanted to take a shower, but then I just let the first three tracks play again, and they are what brings the album up to a 3/5.
Listed Before? Yes Coincidence that we got 1989 followed by 1999? I think not. For me, the end of 1999 was defined by the Y2K "crisis" and the title track of this album. I remember this song was unavoidable. And honestly its not such a terrible thing; this song jams with plenty of 80s cheese. Mixing on Little Red Corvette is doo doo, but the song is among my favorite that Prince has put out. Solid structure with nice layering and an actual guitar solo. Baby sound at the end of Delirious threw me. I've heard it in the TNGHT song Buggin'. Let's Pretend We're Married finds Prince at his horniest. D.M.S.R. is a funky jam. Feels a lot like some of the jams that I have seen Umphreys play on Triple Wide with the heavy synth and splashy guitar. Standout track. Something in The Water is really cool. Love the warbling synth line that the song is based around. Sounds like some modern day avant electronic works, but more poppy. Lady Cab Driver jams pretty hard. Especially through the mid-section where guitar, bass, and drums all have meaty sections. This is shaping to be one of the better Prince albums I've listened to. All The Critics keeps things speeding along. Super funky dance track. Album closes on a slower R&B-ish song. Not out of place relative to the rest of the album but certainly takes some of the wind out of the sales following all the funky energy that was found elsewhere. This is a top two Prince album for me and has some really strong tracks interspersed. I feel like the production was needlessly dusty at times, but otherwise this is well-sequenced and enjoyable. Poppy, repetitive album with no real exciting moments besides the very beginning (1999) and about 30 seconds of Lady Cab Driver. This album could have been 30 minutes long and had the same impact. All of the songs are way too long for how little they actually provide. Definitely the worst of the Prince albums we have had so far.
Everytime I listen to Prince it just sounds like he's trying to do things to my earhole non-consensually. This album was the worst case of it. This should never have been a 70 minute album. 1999 the song was pretty good. DMSR needs to be erased off of this planet. I hated this album. I know a 31 year old white male born in 1992 probably wasn't Princes target audience for this album but I don't care.
I just don't think I get Prince. Could groove to some songs like 1999 but overall really was not vibing most of the time and confused at others (the crying in Automatic?) Songs were dragged out unnecessarily to the point where I kept having to look to see how much was left in each song. Prince is weird and I usually like weird but I actively hate his weirdness. Leaning very close to a 1 on this but had enough moments to warrant a 2.
Besides Prince's super loud screaming, the music's awesome
Prince might be the most horny musical genius there ever was. I was in a massive traffic jam while listening and it made it slightly better.

Prince is such a weirdo and I love him so much. Was he really worried about having enough class for a gal who carries around used Trojans in her pocket? Anyway, this is a banger that I initially wrote off but listening to the whole thing has made me realise just how good it is. I think All The Critics Love U In New York is deeply underappreciated!
Brings me back to my college days… I remember the album well. There are some classic, gems on this, that you will all recognize. There’s some other good stuff on the album, but you’ll remember why the hits are the hits

So, back in 2013, I saw Prince live. 1000 person venue. Incredible time... but beside that point, a comment when I left was "I think there are 1000 people who are now pregnant -- from eye contact alone, myself included" and as an adult male who very much does not have a uterus, that seemed like a funny thing to say. Friends laughed. But like, listen to 1999. Tell me Prince didn't just bang you. It's an absolute masterpiece. Starts with the hits and then descends into hedonism.

This would be an EZ 4 if every song didn't drag on for 2-3 minutes too long. 6.5 minutes per song is ridiculous. 3.5
Can get into this relatively easy, though still not grooving 100%. Some of the interludes are fairly....odd and uncomfortable.

Shame on me for not knowing much of any of Prince discography.. but I am very aware of the proliferation of music that has come out of Minneapolis since his peak in popularity.. I don't think I would have liked this if if I had heard it in my 20s... but this shit is surprisingly funky as fuck! Damn I'm definitely listening to this again. I think I'm just in a rhythm centric funk-era of my life. so.. who knew.. Prince this works for me.. Talkin' about bein' sexy, dancing and fucking. Cool. "All white people clap your hands on the four now" lmao! Review of Reviews: The people.. they love it or hate it.. definitely not for everyone. I can see metal heads saying it's derivative. I have encountered the same problem with "1999" that I find with most of Prince's music. It's just...a lot. Like very long songs that seem to go past their expiration date 2-3 minutes too late. I like this music! I really do! But I don't want to hear an outro that goes on and on. So I can't give this album 5 stars for that reason only. Listening to Prince's music is like when you tell your mom that you like pumpkin pie. From that moment on, you will be eating pumpkin pie or anything else pumpkin related when you visit her house. Why? BECAUSE YOU LIKE IT. I like Prince's music, but I don't need (waves hand around) additional time for him to get his point across. You like the song "Automatic?" Well, how about you get to hear the song for nine-and-a-half minutes? You think "Let's Pretend that We Are Married" is a great song, well then how about you pretend you are married to the song and make a lifetime commitment to the 7-minute run-time? An artist like Prince does not have to be brief, but a little editing can't hurt this album and would not have hurt this album. Great album. I love so much of what is on here. I can't re-visit it too often without the radio edits though.

Fun set of songs with what felt like carefully crafted pop and funk. Concepts were interesting overall, and the structures of each track prevented the whole album from becoming too repetitive. Certain songs did overstay their welcome I think, and some of the dance/percussive aspects were too droning for a casual listen. Character and content shone through consistently, so there were very few generic moments. 5.5/10

Prince is a certified cool dude. I've never really given his work the time of day because I generally listen to other genres but I can't really think of a reason to not like most of this album. Its groovey it's funky, it's sexy. He uses his vocal range to push songs into entirely new areas from the one previous. The 80s music vibe doesn't date the music, just puts it into context. Can't say the whole thing was my cup of tea but it's hard to deny talent on songs like "dsmr", "lady cab dirver" and "international lover".

Maar naast die twee nummers niet echt een die echt bij me is blijven hangen en ik dus niet per se op zichzelf zou aanzetten. Wel goed album, zou (als het kon) een 4,5 geven!!

Too weird
You know those videos called something like, “This is what English sounds like to non-English speakers?” Well, Prince’s 1999 feels like an album called, “This is what my favorite music sounds like to people who don’t like my favorite music.” I just struggle so much with Prince. On a superficial level, it sounds like music I’d like. But I don’t like it. I don’t like the over reliance on square synths. I don’t like the guttural sound of his chest voice or the muppet-esque tone of his falsetto. I don’t like the grooves and I don’t like that every song lasts 3 minutes too long. And yet, each of these elements have similarities to music I DO like. The instruments are well played and the concepts are sometimes interesting. It’s very perplexing. I think ultimately, it comes down to one thing: I don’t think Prince is a good songwriter. Two stars because I don’t like it, but not one star because clearly other people like it, so I think it’s a me problem.

This is a pretty solid but unfortunately frontloaded album in my opinion. The whole first disc is solid and if that's all the album was I'd give it a 5/5 but the second disc I could really take or leave, which dilutes the album as a whole. If 0.5 stars were available it'd definitely be a 3.5 but since it's nearly half an album that I could take or leave I'm going to round down to 3. Also, was kind of naively surprised that this album and the song '1999' came out in the early 1980s. As a kid I just remember this song getting a resurgence in 1999, so I assumed he released it sometime around then. It was fun! I'd listen to it again if it came up but not sure how often I'd seek it out.
This album feels staggeringly ahead of its time. I genuinely cannot believe that it came out in 1982 based on the production and arrangements. Prince's extreme talent shines through here once again. The sheer number of genres and influences exhibited here is literally too big to count. And yet, it is an entirely cohesive project that is pretty remarkable to listen to. I almost rated this four stars because there are three or four better Prince albums. But it’s still better than more than at least 81% of everything else, so 5 stars it is.
Interesting. . . The first two tracks 1999 and red corvette are bangers. How does the rest hold up? Answer: not that well. I mean, Prince is obviously a unique and crazy talent. But, the last nine songs on the album are synth pop from 1982, and don't leave an impression on me. "Free" is a good song, but the rest are meh. . .

Definitely was the baby before the full-blown beauty of Purple Rain. A lot more radio hit-type songs, again some sameiness. Really vibed with more of the songs on the latter half of the album, sounds more like standard Prince tbh. 3 or 3.25ish

Now this is the Prince I thought I knew. There's definitely a reason I didn't come across many of these songs when I was younger, Prince is maybe at his freakiest here. The album starts off with a bang, with the first handful of tracks being locked down as pop staples. Throw in a few other hits along the way and you've got what feels to be an essential album for pop fans. Throw in a cool album cover and I'm sold. Great album
Some classic songs.
Prince was great because he would do these undeniable party anthems like the title track, but there would be lines like "We could all die any day" and "Can't run from the revelation." Then he would transition to a romantic slow jam and throw in asides about torture and face-fucking. My dude was an absolute freak and I love him for it. 1999 finds homeboy teeing up for his magnum opus which he would deliver with his next album. In that context, it can't help but feel like a slightly lesser work. At 70+ minutes it's a bit too long, which is a conundrum for most double albums, but there is still plenty to like here.

Starts great then becomes samesy for the last 8 tracks. Felt like I was in the opening credits of an 80s movie for the first 30 seconds of every song but got bored each time after that

The vocal is heavily processed sometimes and surprisingly unpolished at times? Very synth and sample based music. Sonically complex. Sometimes the screams are startling. Prince has a fantastic singing voice. But he also sounds like he's topless rubbing his nipples while he's singling.
What began as a solid 4 to 5 slowly devolved into a straight 3 for me. Some highlights, but also some filler. Nothing to see here, keep humping along...

I have mentioned my problems with Prince’s production problems before, so here’s a lost of the most egregious ones on 1999: -The Kid talking about bombs at the end of 1999 -That fucking baby at the end of Delirious -The very dated keyboard sound doing tbe fills in Let’s Pretend We’re Married -The other very dated keyboard sound in D.M.S.R. -‘Somebody call the Police Help me, somebody please help me, somebody help me’ ???

Classic Prince and the album I personally connected with when I first heard it. Funny that this came out in the 80s, but I like the 90s, and this is still my favorite Prince albums. I'll take his advice to heart, party like it's 1999.

Not my cup of tea. The 80s pop music seems to be created with the latest technologies for the time but these techs sound retro now and they are not like the ones from 60s and 70s that are not digital and still sound good.
Controversial opinion #1: I don’t get the cult worship/obsession with Prince. Some great songs, decent songwriter, musician and producer - but also a lot of guff…
Psychedelic does not do this justice. I can't say that I love it, actually. A lot of the same sounds and the same progressions of notes as musical motifs that may have been revolutionary at the time, but being exposed to it for the first time now has me unimpressed. It is entirely possible that I would have been forever changed by this album had I heard it when it came out in 1982. Which is a weird release year given that the first track, 1999, is written as if it is a throwback to a better and simpler time. I actually do really enjoy DMSR. I suppose it is possible that the album changes after the first four songs. Automatic is a 10 minute bop All the Critics Love U in New York

Pretty good but the songs are too long.The first two songs are the best and then it kinda goes downhill from there.I still love prince though,but this isn’t his best work.

I suspect that "1999" and "Little Red Corvette," beyond their groove appeal, have resonated with so many because each are unique takes on universal themes, masterfully expressed. This is the power of the greatest lyricists/vocalists---to convey emotions or insights that we all have but do not commonly recognize or articulate, and use their vocals like paint on canvas to further communicate the concept and corresponding emotions, so that the combination feels like an expression of the listeners own soul. I did not find that appeal with the other tracks on this album, though they are musically similar to the first two. "Little Red Corvette" and APC's "Magdalena" are similar in theme, and may represent their category's highest achievements.

Hyper-sexual and hyper-funky. Very unique, especially for 1982, I'm sure. Fav tracks: Delirious, Lady Cab Driver, 1999
First 4 songs are gold. The long extended codas should be boring, but they are not. Lots of tasty guitar solos and cool meandering buried in the outros. Long outros usually are bad, but these actually add to the songs. Some songs got a little too long. Lots of great ideas. Some songs have sub-par lyrics, but great musical ideas. Doesn't feel like a 5, but maybe 4.5?
Starts with three really strong tracks. Obviously Prince is a great singer, songwriter, guitar player and arranger. This probably earns double album status, but not sure it’s consistent enough to earn the 5th star. Other Prince records have better deep cuts.
If Prince only sang on this album it would be a 5-star effort. In his spare time he wrote everything, played every instrument, and produced it. As a 23-year-old.
Would describe as sexual synth pop. Overall pretty good, some bangers. 7/10.

The first four songs on the track were good and then the album progressively downgraded. Too many of the songs either involved or were entirely based on sex leaving many songs to come off as repetitive. Little Red Corvette was personally my favorite song on the album. The vocals are good and the song has a great tune and beat. Which can not be stated for many of the other songs on this album.
Overall: There is some interesting production, plenty here that was novel at the time. But ultimately it was underwhelming from a structural point of view, a ton of drawn out repetition both within a song and from track to track. I am not a huge fan of Prince's vocals, and lyrically it suffers from the same issues as above. You can only hear Prince say he loves sex so much before you get it and want something more substantive, particularly if songs are going to be so long. There are a few standouts like Something in the Water, but ultimately I think this album is skippable. 1) 1999 -Big synth boy -Very 80s drums -Nice vocals from the women -No change up leaves it feeling a bit long, but fun song. Plenty of interesting percussion and sounds 2) Little Red Corvette -Organ in the chorus, I think? Like how it fits in the pocket -Nice little solo -Lyrically underwhelming, but a nice song to listen to 3) Delirious -Goofy lead synth line but I liked it -Floaty, light rhythm -Sounds like a 60s song made with 80s instruments, kinda neat -Loses interest halfway through 4) Let's Pretend We're Married -80s percussion doing its thing -No one told Prince "no" about his vocal choices for better or worse -"Look you Martian, I'm not sayin' this just 2 be nasty I sincerely want to fuck the taste outta your mouth". Hmm. Okay 5) D.M.S.R. -Immediate notice, another song about dancing and sex. Prince knows what he wants -Spends a good 3 minutes in the middle of the song that sounds like it is going to begin fading out, but... doesn't -Furthering on that, it doesn't culminate into anything 6) Automatic -Pretty forgettable for a 9 and a half minute song -Standard fare for the album, a good half of it repeats the same part -Synth gets full at the end but by then you're checked out 7) Something in the Water (Does Not Compute) -Wait a second, this song is funky with it -Warpy sounding accenting riff, love it -Mix starts to grow at the mid point, actually keeps attention more than prior tracks -Still could have used a more explosive end rather than petering out again, but it was overall a good track 8) Free -Very distinct from the preceding tracks, which is a must at this point -Nice piano tone -I really do not like Prince's fried voice in this track -Otherwise, decent build up and release, was a nice break after the consistent dispersed funky mix of the album 9) Lady Cab Driver -Gorgeous bass riff and tone in the verse -Synth in the chorus almost sounds like a trumpet, sounds good. There is no trumpet listed on Wikipedia for instrumentation so I'm assuming it's the synth, anyway -Snare tone is more solid than the preceding tracks, gives it a crisp sound -3 minute mark, it's an 8 minute song, perfect time for the song to start a change unlike the prior long songs -Well, there isn't a change sonically, but lyrically it sure changes, accompanied by the sounds of a woman moaning -Cool section where the guitar solo fills in sections between a sustained organ -Solo itself is fine, mostly works with a good contrasting tone -...still 1:30 left in the track just to return to the start of the song and a repeating vocal line. Sounds nice but in terms of the progression of the song, seems unnecessary 10) All the Critics Love U in New York -Another return to what this album has mostly sounded like -The bass punches through the mix in a nice way, but the drumming never moves away from a standard beat, and like most of the other tracks the general rhythm relies on oft repeating empty space, rather than sustained chords. Not a bad thing on its own but every song for the most part operates like this and leaves a similar feeling from song to song 11) International Lover -I like the opening melody -Nice ballad -Not sure this works well as an end to the album cohesively. As a collection of songs, fine, but there isn't a lot of flow to the album, at least not one that allows this sort of ballad to work as a cap

It's a prince album, how could you go wrong? Dated via the heavy synthesizer use but still great.
Unbelievably strong start, drags a bit in the middle but closes strong.
A fantastic breakthrough album, this was Prince announcing his presence with greater sophistication as a musician and lyricist. While he certainly maintained the promiscuously charged themes of his earlier albums, "1999" moves into more figurative terrain and has more to say. The first half includes a series of signature tracks that would help define Prince as a pop sensation. The second half is more a mix of funky fare reminiscent of the earlier albums. It makes the whole LP a little uneven but clearly a marker for the ascent he was about to take.
Prince invents Final Fantasy Chocobo music and talks about sex a lot. There are zero reasons for this to be over 70 minutes long. It might be fun, but do you know what's also fun? Huffing lead paint. Really makes you think.
Pretty iconic, especially 1999. I'll have to delve into it a little more I think.

Ehhhh, it's not bad, most of the songs are too long and I think something in the water is obnoxious and lady cab driver just feels a bit cringe. I think i expected to like this and have come away feeling somewhat underwhelmed, its a 3 but only just

This album is just incredible from start to finish. When it comes to party songs, even ones that maybe got a little played out, you can’t do any better than the title track or Let’s Pretend We’re Married, but the down tempo numbers, especially International Lover, also hit.
Prince is very talented he raised the bar with some of his lyrics. I liked that he didn't seem to pull any punches when it came to the language.
Title track great. This album hasn't aged well. Some of the beats and melodies sound like they have been done by a three year old. Songs are way too long and repetitive. Boring, will never listen to this again

The opening salvo are possibly two of the best pop songs ever written. After this brilliance I’ve always been disappointed with 1999. A number of the songs are too long and don’t scale those same dizzy heights.

This album starts of with 2 absolute classics...and then there's the rest. I was really disappointed that nothing else was particularly enjoyable to my ears. Maybe a controversial take but I'm starting to think that Prince just excelled at singles (and even some of those are just okay) and wasn't a great full album artist. Come at me, bro. A 3 just for the 2 singles. It would easily be a 2 if not for those.

Very Princey sounding with very heavy synth and heavy breathing. D.M.S.R. has a good funk and makes me want me to pull out the cardboard. Overall, it seems very dated and not really enjoyable.

Wat gehakketak op een keyboardje zoals je ze nu bij de kringloop vindt, een beetje interessant doen met wat danspasjes, af en toe 'sex' roepen, een beetje gillen en vervolgens jezelf door de platenmaatschappij op laten blazen tot mega-artiest. Als je het nu terughoort is het een soort jaren-tachtig-liftmuzak, een achtergrondmuziekje bij Beverly Hills Cop of zoiets. En dan vond ik Harold Faltermeyer toch beter.
(19)99% van deze plaat is het '80's gevoel. En dan bedoel ik de hardcore-Walk-the-Dinosaur-80's. Kan mij niet voorstellen dat die lui niet naar deze plaat hebben geluisterd. Prince maakt er met de beperkingen van deze periode wel wat van. Muzikale creativiteit kan hem niet ontzegd worden. Tekstueel zijn de onderwerpen beperkt. Al zet hij er wel een hit over een milennium-bug op. Deze springt duidelijk boven de rest uit. Denk wel dat hij begin '80's andere feestjes in 1999 voor ogen had, dan waar ik nu op terug kijk.
Prince is een hitmachine. En een paar van zijn grootste hits staan op dit album. De rest vh album herbergt met name de typische jaren 80 sound met synths en beatjes. Aangevuld met Prince gilletjes en theatraal gekreun. Het is Prince ten voeten uit, maar muzikaal gezien is hij nog niet op zijn meest bombastisch en theatraal, en dat maakt het een stuk beter om naar te luisteren dan een Purple Rain. Al zou de plaat van 70 minuten wel iets meer afwisseling kunnen gebruiken, heb ik niet de neiging gehad om het af te zetten. Een frivole 3 sterren.
Just boring. I was originally going to review this with "horse shit". But it's worse than that - it's boring horse shit. And Free is worse than that again. I have a mate who really likes Prince - the sort of bloke who hears one song and decides he's going to like everything the artist does. Little Red Corvette doesn't make this a great album (you can keep 1999 - that's more of the same). Great albums need more than one or two decent tunes, and this is just boring as fuck.
Dropped out of university today, and wanted something to help me have a good therapeutic cry about it. Prince yelling at me to party was... not that. Good album though!
My favorite Prince album - this is the one that made him famous and he was a pure breath of talent and freshness back in 1982 when this was released.
Some futuristic sounds by Prince, looking forward by 17 years and not being that much far from truth. The problem is that this future music is not really the best outcome, of all possible scenarios. Mixing r&b, rock, pop and some electronic sounds resulted in a very average album, which at the time, I believe had to be revolutionary. Prince was named Miles Davis of pop/rock, which might be true, because he mastered so many different genres, but this album on its own doesn't really appeal to me. I'll be happy to listen to other records by him, to see how much he changed his style later on.

Day 115 Prince has always been a difficult one for me: on paper I should love his music, but when I listen to him, I find myself having a hard time; I don't dislike him, at all, it's just that I don't get the hype, which is probably deserved by the way. I feel kind of left out. Still, I like Dirty Mind, I like Sign O' The Times, and I like some of Purple Rain and some of Around the World in a Day. While listening to 1999 for the challenge, I finally understood what puts me off him: I can't hear a band, nor can I hear a one-man band, which would be totally fine as well. I can't hear a production either, or more precisely I hear a hollow production; all I can hear is toys, and don't get me wrong, I like synths and some (if not all) synth-based music. He probably sounds kind of detached from his music to my ears, or I am just unable to connect with him. These were my thoughts while listening to the first three songs, which according to the book make for a perfect way to introduce the album. Then D.M.S.R. happened and things started to gel; a few spins later I still think this is the standout track for me with all that funk upfront. Automatic kind of goes back to the sound of the prior tracks but now it works better for me; the slapping bass solo is a nice touch, even if it feels a bit buried in the mix. The synth parts become much more interesting on Something in the Water. All the Critics Love U in New York is another highlight, and finally International Lover points towards Purple Rain the song. All in all my perception of Prince hasn't changed much but I did found something to like on here. I guess I will keep trying as I have been doing during all these years. "I sincerely want to fuck the taste out of your mouth" is quite the line though, and it's worth the whole album honestly.
It starts with 2 timeless classics then slowly fades from my interest as it goes on. The songs are mostly too long for me.

Not my cup of tea
Not only is the whole album way too long, but each song goes on way longer than they should. I mean 1999 has 2 straight minutes of the same annoying riff while people chant "party!" with no change or anything interesting happening. Some of these songs could be decent enough as tight 3min fun pop songs, but instead they're 9 fucking minutes.

I've never understood the fuss about Prince; there's nothing on this album that wasn't already going on: Nile Rodgers had been doing this stuff for years. Bowie, Heaven 17, numerous second rate new romantic bands. It's merely not very good disco music.

DMSR is funky as shit. Automatic is good too. I thought this album sucked at first but now it’s good. Lady cab driver is also very good. I want to listen to this one again. Like I actually really like it. Even though I need to be more strict with my rating.

Some funky 80s synth bops. Prince is no doubt original. This album feels like he can't get his talent out fast enough. Ends up like a jumble of confusing songs that don't know what they're trying to accomplish. Not to say none of the songs land, just that it feels very multi-directional. Also, something needs to be said about the length. Most songs were not good enough to justify how long they went on. Just end them already. It gets annoying. 4/5

It was okay - Funky, kinda experimental at times, and very 80s. However I didn't enjoy it as much as I expected. It's very horny, long and repetitive. Is this just meant to be a sex album? It started off great but just sort of tuned itself out into the realm of background music. Not my favourite Prince album. Favourite: 1999
I'm usually a prude, but I do have to admit I enjoy the presentation of this album. It's pretty openly sexual, but it's more in a fun way than a threatening way, at least from what I picked up. The music was pretty good too. My issue was the length. If these songs were shorter, I could see this being a 4, but it's hard to ignore the very long songs that bog the album down for me towards the middle. I'm not sure if I'll like either of the Prince albums more, but I'd say this was a nice introduction. My favourite song was All the Critics Love U in New York.

I have heard about Prince but that was my first time listening him. This album had its moments but was not something that I would consider one of 1001 that I had to listen.
That was... intense... "Soft" version of Biggie Smalls, judging by lyrics. For 1982, it's a bold statement.
Hard to rate - some hits but overall I'm not really into this.

prince is an amazing talent. he plays all of the instruments on his albums and writes all of the songs. while the albums are certainly a showcase for his musicianship, his lyrics are a little redundant. we get it, you like sex. if the lyrical content was on par with the musical content, it would be four stars. however, three stars it is.
I may not be able to fully understand the tone that this album goes for, but one thing is for sure, I love the pop instrumentation and Prince's voice is amazing. Also sex 4/5

Oof. I was excited when I saw it was a Prince album. Oof. After the first two songs it went downhill incredibly fast. What awful songs. And so damn long too.
My fat fingers hit 4 yesterday instead of 3. Wish there was an “are you sure?”Prompt. Anyway: This album is okay. I like the little red corvette song. Prince is a great musician and has an iconic voice. His guitar solos and bass lines are fun. Some of his lyrics in this album, and his attitude, cleared my sinuses. He is sassy. That said, there was some odd production decisions here. Some of the songs jam on and on with not much direction. Sometimes the listener is drawn to hear a woman yelling “Help me!!”, some very suggestive moaning, a child laughing, or an elephant noise. These small bits were obviously added after the fact and Prince probably put his foot down hard on these odd creative choices. All the critics love U in New York has Prince making a call over two-way radio about masturbating. Over and out!

This album is very bad. Not good! Prince is considered an enigma, a prodigy, one of the greats - but this album is just not good. The album starts off okay, 1999 and Little Red Corvette are half-decent songs. Everything after is downright terrible. Most tracks are 6-9 minutes and don't really offer much beyond a standard chorus/verse structure, so these tracks don't really go anywhere - why not make them 3-4 minutes then? I understand that this is a concept album and there's some story but that doesn't excuse making the music crap for the sake of whatever story he's trying to tell. I partially hope there's a better Prince album in this list but then I'd risk having to listen to some of his crap songs.
Prince is actually one of the greatest guitars of all time but I barely hear any noticeable guitar parts, with the exception of a couple songs. A damn shame. Most of these songs are stuck in a very specific era of time. Which is hard to listen to if that vibe isn’t popular at the current moment. Most of this album doesn’t transcend time, which is the sign of a great album, in my opinion. I like a few Prince songs, and I’m kinda into his whole aura. But the majority of this record sucks. It’s very Madonna-ish.
Prince can rip on the guitar (although you wouldn't know it) and he's got a great voice but man, this was not enjoyable, almost turned it off a few different times. No real highlights for me, maybe Delirious because I found it pretty catchy? DMSR is one of the worst songs I've ever heard. A lot of the production on this album is pretty cringe.
Prince was an immensely talented musician who used his abilities to create awful music. It's like if all Monet did was take big steaming dumps on canvases.

Of the times. Would say that Cold War paranoia and Prince undergoing a sexual transformation (apparently; could be interpreting this wrong) are huge influences to this album. Seems like a really experimental album for the times and possibly a huge influence for pop music for the years to come. That and Thriller, of course. 1982 was a big year for Pop.

Banger album, Prince has such powerful charisma that oozes through his music. One of the most electric live performers and the studio recordings don’t let up either. Obviously iconic tracks like 1999 and Little Red Corvette get most of the attention, but the whole album is great, my secondary favorites after those two are probably Automatic and Lady Cab Driver.
Defines an era. Explores themes of partying but is underlined by struggles with lust and sexual desires. Lush vocals and beautiful song-writing. Some cool funky songs on here such as D.S.M.R. and Lady Cab Driver. Didn't know it was possible to experience what it's like to fuck Prince but ok.
Apart from the singles, there was nothing that caught my attention - just stereotypical 'Prince by numbers' - lots of elements that he later put together in a different order to make better songs.
Not really a fan of 80s pop music
The "1" on the on the cover art is totally a dick tip. I've just never been able to get into Prince. He's enjoyable enough. He has his own sound, which I always appreciate, but there's just something that turns me off. That said, I don't hate it, and I get why it's on the list.
Thought the album started very strong but tapered off as it progressed. The only thing I'll take away from it is that the songs can be too long. Otherwise there are a bunch great songs, most notably "1999" and "Little Red Corvette". 8/10
I still feel like I don't really "get" Prince. I appreciate that it was a different time and that he pushed boundaries that needed to be pushed, etc. He was also obviously a fantastic musician. But I find a full album of his hard to get through. There several songs on here that are way too long and probably a bit too self indulgent. I also find the production and mixing is bad in places, sometime the vocals are somewhat buried and the bass is way too loud ( or treble way too high?). Having said that though, the first 3 songs are absolute classics, and the album definitely deserves a spot in this list. Just maybe not in my heart!

No question about the greatness of this one. It's not my personal favourite of his albums, but I'd venture so far as to say it's the greatest of his albums. And Prince has no shortage of great albums to choose from.
Prince is a music god, and this album has one of my favorite songs of all time, "Little Red Corvette." BUT, this album highlights the only issue I have with Prince: the dude has a propensity for overlong songs. Out of 11 tracks, there are only two songs (!) that clock in at less than 5:00. That's nuts. Other than that, this album's fantastic. Wish I'd seen Prince in concert before he died. *sad trombone*
The night before this popped up, a friend asked what song would I listen to if the world was ending. I said if I had enough time for two songs, my first would be One Hundred Years by The Cure because it's pure gloom & doom followed by the song 1999. The lyrics to that song a wholly apocalyptic, but you can also dance your ass off & feel good about the world ending. Prince had a knack for introspective song writing paired with catchy funky dance beats. This is album is excellent across the board & Prince will always be one of my favorite all-time artists.

not my kinda thing but i wouldn't be mad if someone put it on
