Reviews (page 12 of 13)
Very sexual. Too much.
This is Prince's breakout album and has the hits 1999, Delirious and Little Red Corvette.....which are also the best songs on the album. Prince has so much going on that I want to enjoy his music........I just don't. I like his mysterious nature, and he's incredibly talented as a singer and guitar player, his persona is so weird that I want to like him....but his music lets me down each time. So 1999, Little Red Corvette and Delirious are great songs. After that, it's......it's not great for me. I know he's weird, but the overly sexualized nature of the album, with things he's saying behind travels just make me uncomfortable. Maybe some people think that's sexy, it just feels slimy and gross to me. It feels like some guy on the subway coming up to you and seriously saying "I sincerely want to fuck the taste out of your mouth....can you relate?" Actual part of Let's Pretend We're Married.....which let's not pretend isn't an incredibly weird song in the first place. Maybe it's just his singles? It's hard to deny how great the singles are and the music component of the other songs is great, but the constant hypersexual nature of the album doesn't feel sexy to me, it just feels gross.
This was my first experience with Prince and I didn’t love the electric guitar mixed with pop sounds. Also too long!
was into the first few tunes then lost interest
I just could not be arsed with Prince. Too many girls screaming in this aswell for some reason.
While I don’t doubt that Prince is an immensely talented and popular musician, I did not enjoy the vast majority of this album. 1999 was too poppy, little red corvette was a bit annoying, and none of the other tracks really stood out other than they were way too long. 4.5/10
This album is... well... Prince making long and repetitive yet very uninteresting songs. It's insufferable to get to the end. And to think this album is one hour ten minutes long is surprising. Am I missing something or the songs are actually bad? Because I get Prince's reputation, and that he "may" be interesting as an artist, but I just don't end up liking his music (at all). And maybe I should, but his music is at times so insipid for me that I can't get to like it. And more than an hour for the album is too much. I think I have just ("kind of") liked one song and a bit of a few others. But... only one single song! The rest was a bit of funk, a bit of 80's, a bit of electronic, a bit of new wave, some moaning and let's see what happens. Well, nothing good, actually. Just a very bland album.
First and foremost: I've never been a big fan of Prince's music. Charisma is off the charts, respect him as a musician, and he is clearly insanely talented. Guy can make a guitar sing. But sonically, I just don't enjoy this type of music. (Exception made for Raspberry Beret, I adore that track--but it isn't on this album). I gave a try, honest, but the whole time I wished I could be listening to something else. The synths are just so unpleasant sounding. The drums like some cheap Casio keyboard. At times it sounded like something off a 16-bit SEGA Genesis beat-em-uo, for better and worse. I dunno. This really isn't for me. At all. There are moments of the album I can appreciate, but again, I just found it all so unpleasant.
No thanks!
Overall good and his pioneering and quite accurate predictions are what makes this album special. Granted I just don’t love the style
Continuing the Prince album trend of opening with a banger, before rapidly becoming irksome, although I made it deeper through this than I envisaged I might have when the album popped up earlier this morning. 70 minutes of his bombast and wankiness is just way too much to bear repeating though.
My opinion is that it’s an album with good songs and good ideas, but I feel it lacks a stronger funk sound. If it had melodies and a bass line with more groove, I think it would be a more powerful and engaging album.
An hour and ten minutes I won't be getting back. Outside of the singles it's just long meandering nonsense and I can't stand the mix or production. I've always thought 1999 sounded really thin and boxy and cheesy and the rest of the album is the same unfortunately. All there performances are great, it's just not something I connected with on any level.
I just don't understand the hype. His voice is screechy and annoying, the music itself is bland and repetitive. Not for me.
I appreciate that if I heard it in 82 it would have felt.....less dated? But today, to me, it just feels like what you'd get if a 14yr old kid opened up garage band and said what's a key-tar. Nothing really interesting or exciting about it. Sorry.
I don't get Prince
Not really my cup of tea. Like it's fine but just a type of disco upbeat or whatever it is that is not for me.
2 good songs and a bunch of noise
My least favourite of the three Prince albums we have had. Songs drag on for me.
not my vibe
I never was a big fan of Prince, but I know plenty of people who are. I always thought that maybe there was something I was missing out on, but nope, everything I've heard by him sucks. Two stars, mainly for the first two tracks, as the rest is one star filler material.
Some good songs and clearly influential. Prefer over purple rain too. A bit too creepy at times. But Something In The Water may be one of the worst songs I’ve ever heard
its not bad
Didn't really like this one very much. 2 stars
Look. The guy spat out massive pop tunes for fun. I get it. I just find everything about it deeply irritating.
Too sensual and doesnt fit my vibe
1999 (the song) is fantastic, although once again during one if these 1001 album listens, it gave me a new appreciation for the single version (though for the first time because the single version doesn't have a creepy childlike voice saying "Mommy, why does everybody have a bomb?" at the end). The album as a whole though? I was disappointed. It's a bit samey. It's very long. It's could have been half the length and been more enjoyable for me. Prince might end up another one of those artists where a greatest hits would do me just fine. I would want a 2.5 but I'm not in a generous mood so: 2/5
Don't get the hype.
Like obviously he is a legend but just not for meeeee sorry
Starts strong, trails off rapidly.
Did you know this guy likes SEX? Like, SEXY SEX?! Intercourse!
Sounded much like the previous album we had of his. Funky, but not my jam.
Typical Prince, occasionally awesome, often on another page
I honestly only know like two songs of Prince and I’m not a big fan of them. Still I’m vaguely aware Prince was/is a big deal, I just never cared. Listening to this album, my feelings haven’t really cared. I found all tracks to go on for way to long, the album goes on for too long too. It’s just generic 80s pop with no real hooks. Some disco and RnB thrown in there for good measure. The lyrics can’t be meant to be taken seriously? Right? International Lover sounds like a B-side to Rocky Horror Picture Show. 2 star.
There are a ton of popular artists I wanted to give a listen to, but either never got the chance or forgot about. Prince is one of them. I’m glad I wasn’t missing out on much, since sometimes I get really mad at myself for not listening to something sooner. This just isn’t for me. Each song drags on and sounds the same throughout its entirety. Like what you like. If this is for you, I’m glad you can enjoy it, but I really cannot, sorry. This is doing nothing for me. It’s kind of groovy, but so boring. I could never listen to any of these songs again.
I only liked one or two songs; the ladies moans were a bit too much at some point. Also, I felt some songs were excessively long. Just not my cup of tea.
Prince has some great songs, unfortunately not so much on this album. Way too heavy on the cheesy 80s synths, and too many tracks drag on way too long. Very dated sound that unfortunately doesnt hold up well.
1999 - released in 1982! Little Red Corvette and 1999 are the highlights for sure, and the rest can be a little tedious to work through
ouais
Not for me unfortunately :(
Mommy, why DOES everybody have a bomb??
boring the album is made only of 80 love songs that last to long definitely a chore to listen to
plink plonk music international lover kinda makes my skin crawl
Fine but did often question if I liked it. Drags on. Sounds like the culminated project of a classroom of children making music out of household objects. Wailing child, squeaky balloon, children discovering keyboards for the first time, bashing metal bins, etc. Hate the moaning in Lady Cab Driver (skipped, halfway through) 2/5
my first generated Album and I already had to learn not to beginn by looking at other reviews. Overall this piece seems to be very funky. I have to say it lacks musical variety and bores me a bit. It should be clear though, even if I prefer a different type of music, funk is not a problem here. Considering it was released in 1982 this must have stricken like a lightning due to that experimental sound. I don't feel the need to add any song to my playlists. I mentioned not to start with other reviews, that is because when I got this album on screen and started listening to it, I expected a funky peace of music. I glimpsed at the other reviews and they mentioned the connections to sexual activities. That grosed the frick out of me and I immediatly got a negative bias. I don't feel the need to add any song to my playlists. I would not want to buy this Album in physical form. I like to rate things 0-10 because I can say that 5 is average. And I will rate 1999 by Prince a 4/10!
Not a big prince fan
Not a big fan. Listened to the first four songs. Couldn’t make myself finish it.
Thought I'd like it more because I felt obligated to like it as Prince is a highly regarded artist but unfortunately I didn't. Enjoyed Free.
didnt really like it was ok
I really don't like Prince very much, turns out.
Funky, sexy, but didn't age well
2.5/10
Not a fan
Largo y repetitivo
Liked it less than I thought I would.
Some okay songs but not really my jam
i just don’t think this was for me. songs are too long. i feel like i got very intimate with prince and i didn’t like it
A couple of 80's radio all-star classics combined with a several 10minute long 80's synth songs which feel like they belong in B-grade cop movie chase sequence. Not sure why we had a chick orgasming for half of one of the songs too. 2 star
We get it, you want to have sex. Why not sing about something else, too, like the Franco-Prussian war of 1870? The songs are so long you could certainly fit it in.
Meh
I cannot relate to the critical acclaim this album achieved. Sound and production was cold and repetitive and very dated, even by early 80s standards. Songs felt bloated and the album longer than necessary at 1hr10m. The theme of apocalyptic partying and sex fantasy is less interesting than intended, coming across as self indulgent. Some songs like Lady Cab Driver I find distasteful and poorly aged. Giving 2 stars instead of 1 because the album is ambitious, and performed and produced entirely by Prince.
4/10 Best: Little Red Corvette Worst: Lady Cab Driver (Don’t think I managed to finish this one) Overall, I did not particularly enjoy the sound of this album and really struggled to finish it. Although the entire play through was only 1hr 10mins, it felt like the songs were way too long for me to enjoy and even the ones I liked initially, I found wore thin. I hated the constant repetition and the pace of the album felt way too slow, there was so much going on with the instruments and it hit my ears odiously. At first I thought the album was written to ironically mock the Y2K panic before realising it was released in 1982! This, bumps it up in my opinion, as lyrically it feels very avant-garde, in terms of sexuality and physicality. (See album cover for one example lol) I also really appreciate the fact that Prince wrote, arranged and produced the entire album, you do get the feeling that he’s just a guy having fun in the studio, which honestly I love. The message that this album conveys is really great and it’s probably just unfortunate that I didn’t particularly enjoy the music, the sounds clashed so much for me and it felt like there were so many random patches in odd places. Maybe if I had been around for the release I would have a greater appreciation of just how progressive it was.
Meh, Purple Rain is better.
So the lead single is amazing but the rest is too light and scattered for me. Thrown together, not hard enough, a bit squelchy and the guitar sounds apologetic. Nowhere near sign o the times. I got bored.
So much sex
Cheesier than Tillamook dairy, and a double album because every track is twice as long as it needs to be. Prince is one of those artists I've had to learn to put up with because so many other people like him, but I wouldn't ever choose to listen on my own.
Very 90s and had a lot of synth. I don’t listen to a lot of Prince, but there are probably better albums out there than this one.
Some Prince I don't mind, this is ass. Probably in the running for most over rated all time
Very 80s. Not my favourite album. Only song I liked was 1999. Would need to give it a few more listens.
Kinda painful
This album is way too long. Almost every song is nearly ten minutes when they could all benefit from being four. So many of the songs were just moans and synth lines over a repetitive groove. I did like the funky grooves, but again, they just went on and on. My favorite songs were short and had great standout vocal performances, Standout Tracks: Little Red Corvette, Free
The overtly sexual nature of every song was pretty funny. The general sound of every song did start to get repetitive.
This started strong but quickly started to make me feel very uncomfortable. I appreciate Prince's sound and the fun songs but not enough to listen again.
3.0/10 Surprised by this one... the songs were way too long!
Not my favorite era of his music.
Prince is an artist I somehow always overlooked, especially given his stature in the music industry. Listening to this album tells me why- he simply, to me, isn't very good. I can respect his artistry but I found this album boring and overlong- so 80s it makes Cabbage Patch Kids puke up Troll dolls onto Ronald Reagan. Best song: ¨1999¨
Starts well with the two singles that continue to get airtime as they are great funky tunes. Thereafter I lose interest fairly rapidly - 80's funk not my bag especially slap bass and the quality of the tunes gets weaker as album progresses.
call me crazy but i can’t get behind prince. except for his appearance on new girl
Over the years I've tried to like Prince's music, but the adolescent sex obsession always puts me off.
This was crap
Tar jo aldri slutt. Mye jokking, alle låtene varer for lenge.
Kind of a weird album, mixed genres and all over the place. For some reason I can’t stop thinking about Kong about the movie Revenge of the Nerds II - the concert scene…IYKYK. Some songs are pure 80’s synth pop, most are funk based, a couple have that 80’s nostalgia for the 50’s. Lyrically pretty trite for the most part. I’d never listened to a Prince album before and this doesn’t excite me for the inevitable next one on this list. Also, a lot of the songs overstay their welcome - of the were 4 minutes instead of 8 I might be ok. Notable tracks include Little Red Corvette, Let’s Pretend We’re Married.
First three songs are pretty good. The first half of the album is much much better than the second half.
doof
I'm right in the middle. Good tracks, but prince is having sex instead of ripping a guitar solo; lame 5/10
This is very 80s cheese to me.
Not my jam. It was really weird and almost like softcore porn.
Prince is a musical genius; there is no disputing that. But he also comes across as an absolute tool. Another pretentious narcissist that people fall over themselves to wank on about. That's right, I'm looking at you Morrissey). Awesome music technically.
Prince bangs on about sex and sexiness - it makes him sound like a virgin overcompensating. I couldn't be drier. A very unsexy 2 stars from me.
Kinda boring I'm so sorry I find Prince's music just really boring outside of the big hits
Svo leiðinlegt, nennti ekki að klára
This did not age very well. The long instrumental parts, songs are very long, sound boring nowadays. Fav: Little red corvette
Omaan korvaan tosi tasapaksua soitantaa
No ei kovin hyvä levy.
Eli ainakin likaisuusaspekti on 1000%.
Let's pretend we're married sekä Free tulevat kyllä omille soittolistoille tältä levyltä. En muuta tämän albumin perusteella mielipidettäni Princestä: hemmetin kova Greatest Hits -artisti, mutta levyjä ei kyllä jaksa kuunnella.
This was very disco. I guess I don't really like it. To be fair me listening with headphones on the balcony might not be the intended experience.
Thought it would be better
The classic Prince songs were great. The more unknown ones were not great at all. Going with 2.5. Sorry Prince fans.
A lot of boring filler with two hits
Neither Kiss, Purple Rain, Sinéad O'Connor's cover of "Nothing Compares 2 U" nor his solo on that "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" performance have ever given me any desire to really find out whatever else this Prince guy was up to. Almost as if I have always suspected I would find: this turgid nonsense here. Pornsounds. I'm probably (hopefully!?) missing an aspect or two about what this album meant and was in 1982 - only thing that prevents a heartfelt 1 -, but to my today's ears and mind, this, along with its brand of horrid 80s synth funk is pure cringe.
ok
Didn't mind it, songs went on way too long.
Just don’t like the guy
Dużo o Shreksie a i tak nic ciekawego

Boy those songs are long! Quite repetitive also. I think the lyrics used to be revolutionary at the time being, now I don't find them so appealing. Rhythms are groovy though, great album if you like soul or funk. I'm not a big fan but didn't hate it. I don't think I will listen to it again, just doesn't seem like my kind of music. I couldn't suffer through song called "Automatic". There was a phrase in this song "I'm going to have to torture you know" which is pretty similar how I felt during the longer songs of this album. Thanks for the heads-up though. Actually, "Lady Cab Driver" sometimes was pretty good. It is still 8 minutes, I liked maybe a half of it.
Prince? More like Shit. I imagine in 1982 when it was released it would have got everyone wet but I've heard dic...dic...dictionary on the keyboard in year 7 music and my dick felt just as limp then as it did listening to this. All tracks were irritating apart from Lady Cab Driver, only because it was nice to hear some moaning without needing to download a VPN. Sure women can be Uber drivers too, you tell 'em sis! One star for the album then another star because inevitably there's always something worse around the corner.
Never got the Prince hype. The neighbours must have thought there was a summers day orgy occurring when international lover was playing. 2 stars.
So many red flags in this album... D.M.S.R. and Automatic are cool though.
overall, the vibe is nice and peaceful. But 1) the songs are way too long and it gets kinda boring at times 2) some sound effects and moments are a little weird and uncomfortable I enjoyed 1-2 songs, but even then, it’s like, when does it end? It stays the same a lot.
Funk osuudet iskee mutta todella paljon aikaansa sidottua syntikkaa, liian korkeaa pitchausta, kummallista kaikuefektiä joista en tykännyt!
My first Prince album - not a huge fan of the songs I heard beforehand over time, and feel that that "GREATEST SOLO EVER OMG OMG" from the Hall of Fame show is a load of overblown wank. Hoping that a full album can give me a proper understanding of why he's so revered and influential! -------- Sounds like it was made to be pumped directly into a club. Which could be the best explanation for why everything is so long and repetitive - although there's some great funk moments in there! Sounds best when the songs move their furthest away from pop and into electronic soundscapes. All that genius production and it still comes out so lightweight... I'm still not really won over. Favourite tracks: Pretend That We're Married, Something in the Water, half of Lady Cab Driver
I am sure this is a classic in it's own right, but I took three things from listening: 1. Prince is afraid he 's gonna die soon. 2. He is very, very, horny. 3. He is determined to resolve nr. 2 before nr. 1 occurs. Although I fully understand the sentiment, I don't think I will be listening to him telling about it again
It was fine, more like a 2.8
I had never listened to Prince before, so was good for me to check this out. I wasn’t that interested though. Metaphors in the closing tracks were a neat part
Puede ser interesante, algunos sonidos estan bien
I’ve always understood Prince was one of those revolutionary pop artists that everyone is supposed to enjoy, but I did not enjoy the first few tracks at all. 1999 was just awful 80s pop garbage, Little Red Corvette was slightly better but it was still pretty awful, and Delirious was at least a minute too long and that synth line is grating. I was gearing up for a long, tough listen, but I did end up enjoying the middle section even if the tracks were still surprisingly long. A lot more fun, funky tracks like Lady Cab Driver and All the Critics Love U in New York and some absolutely wild and experimental tracks like Something in the Water (Does Not Compute). Let's Pretend We're Married and DMSR are probably the horniest songs I've heard; the last few verses of Let's Pretend We're Married in particular are pretty wild. Unfortunately, the album ends on another sour note with International Lover that is more awful 80s pop garbage. I gave the album a second listen to make sure I wasn't missing something, but other than a few tracks in the middle, I'd prefer to never listen to this again.
Prince has been "on the list" of artists to get to for a while. This removed him from that list...
I wanted to like this album more than I ended up liking it. While the vocal range of Prince is undeniably on display in “1999” there isn’t much depth beyond that. One detriment is that the first two songs on the album, “1999” and “Little Red Corvette”, are two of Prince’s most well-known hits and so the rest of the album feels like the producers quit trying and just threw some leftover material to fill the void. At best “1999” is a satirical hit-piece on the hypersexual pop culture of the 1980s—at worst it’s merely a product of that culture. If there is to be found any redeeming factor in this album it will be found in the song “Free” which balances the eroticism so signature in Prince’s artwork with a kind of activist edge. It’s almost as if Prince is still discovering his voice of the prophetic love that would become more apparent in his later work.
I dig he fun 80s pop instrumentation but I've just never been a fan of Prince's vocals. I will say even though I didn't 100% vibe with this album, I can see myself giving it another go someday.
So incredibly horny that I couldn’t finish on the first listen. Prince is on another plane of sexuality than the rest of us. I’ll stick to Purple Rain
Couple of pretty good songs, the rest is meh. Horny shit made me cringe
1999 and Red Corvette and Delirious are great, but I can't really get into the others
Two Prince albums in a row huh? Well this review is same as my last. Lots of people love him, but his music just does not move me. Also once again entirely too long.
Singles good. Rest is way too long and uninspired funk.
De fraco para regular. Excesso de sintetizadores e batidas eletrônicas, associados a vocais "gritados". Sons onomatopaicos em "Let's Pretend We're Married" soam infantis. Melhor faixa é o funk "Lady Cab Driver".
Not for me.
Mid.
385/1001
I like the sound but I unfortunately am no where near sexually charged enough for this album. It would have gotten much higher points if it was shorter or if I was dancing to it.
I enjoy an opening song/title that predicts the millennium bug despite a FIRM musical grounding in the 80s. So many songs that would be perfect for a dressing up montage in a brat pack movie. I just wish you would surprise me, Prince. Didn’t care for the lyric ‘work your body like a whore’ neither. Absolute hedonism can get tiresome when there’s nothing else on offer - Versailles felt like this sometimes, I imagine. Including a mildly sinister undercurrent (what’s with the woman screaming ‘help, please help me’?). I do like a camp laugh though. My mum will be pleased I’ve listened to this.
Got tired of listening to prince whisper about how he wants to fuck me for 3 mins at the end of every song.
Nema nikakve poente u skoro pola dužine ovog albuma.
Every time I started liking a song he started to moan in my ear
Prince, for me at least, is more famous as a performer than a musician. I know a lot about him as a personality, but the music doesn't seem to get as much play as I would expect. Maybe I'm not hearing it, but I don't really hear his songs in the wild. Other similar artists are Bjork, the Grateful Dead, and Lady Gaga is on her way there. I guess Franz Liszt would be the early example. And after hearing it, yeah, that makes sense. He's a great singer, he's got personality, but I really don't find the music that catchy. It's fine, but I JUST listened to it and probably could only hum 1999. The rest of it is glaringly 80's, and mostly forgettable outside of the sometimes bizarre lyrics.
Add me to the segment of listeners who just doesn't get Prince. I've seen recordings of live performances, and he is electrifying. Truly a great showman and guitar player. I can't say that I enjoy any of his studio singles. I had never listened to a whole album before this, and this did not change my mind.
Vraiment pas fan du boug
I consider myself a Prince fan but I was extremely disappointed by this. Maybe I’m not a Prince fan after all. 1999 is great, Little Red Corvette is pretty good, but the rest of the album is is a slog. The album has some dance tropes which work horribly - long songs with repeating grooves that don’t really go anywhere. A distinct lack of chord progressions. The instrumentation has a stank of 80s tackiness and not even Prince’s charisma can overcome it. Fave Track: 1999 2.5/5
Nei
Again with all the weird sex stuff. A couple decent songs, but also a lot of boring drum machines and synthesizers.
prince was freaky af 2+/5
Maybe I'm a prude, but I don't care for all the moaning etc. The shock value of singing about fucking is gone in 2025, though I imagine it was more transgressive to be a horny little freak in the 80s. Now it's just irritating. Musically it has its moments, but they're few and far between. Every time I saw the next track was 7, 8, 9 minutes long, I thought "oh for fuck's sake".
..
meh .. its a great beat, sure, but after 1999 it starts to sound really repetitive
What a banging opening -1999 deserves its classic status and Little Red Corvette's memorable, then it peters right out. Not my cuppa tea back in the day (1982, aged 14) - I preferred my music spiky and lo-fi so no doubt sneered at this for its pomp and production. I remember back in the day finding the whole sexy talk of Prince squirmish rather than sensual, ridiculous rather than raunchy, and nothing's changed. Sample lyrics 'Work your body like a whore' and 'This is your pilot Prince speaking, you're flying aboard the Seduction 747 and this plane is fully equipped with anything your body desires' do natch for me.
Not always huge on Prince and this album is way too dance-synth-pop for me. I like the couple big songs on the album but the rest do absolutely nothing for me. Sorry.
J - 2/5 Best Track - "1999" F - 2/5
Lot more crying women than I remembered
It is always interesting to hear an older album reference a year that has already happened for us, but is so far in the future at the time of the album. The opening track dreams of partying in 1999/2000, what were their expectations of those years? This is the first Prince album I have ever listened to. The first track made me want to tease my hair, wear bright colors, and wear a pair of huge earrings. Many of the tracks carried this same groove. While the songs were fun and playful, much of this album felt gimmicky to me. Between the synths and voice effects, mixed with the songwriting, I felt it was all made to catch my attention, which it did, but it did not stick with me. This album was made to make people dance, and I am sure it was revolutionary at the time, but it did not feel super interesting to listen to, especially on my second go-around. It was long, some songs dragged, and I felt like everything blended. The first two tracks were my favorites, I would not listen to this album again though :(
Is probably a great funk record, but I'm not really vibing with it. Shreeking sounds and songs that just go on for way too long. Might be better if high on coke.
1999 by Prince (1982) was super funky and made me want to dance, especially the title track, but honestly, the album just wasn’t for me. A lot of the songs like “Little Red Corvette,” “Delirious,” “Let’s Pretend We’re Married,” and “Automatic” felt pretty meh, and the more electronic tracks like “D.M.S.R” and “Something in the Water (Does Not Compute)” didn’t really vibe with me either (though I did like the bass on “D.M.S.R”). “Free” was the first song I really loved — it had gorgeous vocals and instrumentals that actually sounded like the Prince I expected. “Lady Cab Driver” was funky but not my thing, “All the Critics Love U in New York” was a no, and “International Lover” was kind of nice but still didn’t win me over. Overall, the album bored me and my mind kept wandering, even though the funky beats made me want to move sometimes. I’d give it a 4/10.
I'm surprised that the "party like it's 1999" phrase was coined in 82. Prince was really planning ahead with that one. Solid album. It has a few good hooks and is pretty experimental, but this album makes the grave sin of being long as shit. I'm also not sure what context this music fits into. The long runtimes on many of the tracks and the club thematic leads me to believe that this album was intended for a DJ set, yet funk isn't really the standard when it comes to clubbing. When listened to within the confines of my own room and as actual music the album also doesn't hold up due to the immense amount of dead air. I guess it belongs in house parties? This album is surprisingly very subdued, which I guess plays into the decision to make this album the auditory equivalent of a marathon. It's cool, but not for me. The constant moaning also really kills the vibe, though it's exclusively on the long tracks, so I guess nothing much was lost in my eyes.
I thought prince played the guitar
Tervanjuontia. Helvetin pitkä ja puuduttava jamisessio. Silti yks tähti tuntuis liian törkeälle.
There's a lot of video game music on this one. Drags in the second half
Good singles, otherwise a boring listen. Struggled to get through
Got bored after the first two songs which were the singles and then it just became background music. Didn’t hold my attention
Very 80s.. reminds me of being in the car with my parents growing up. A lot of range for sure. Just not my style Of music. Raspberry beret is a banger tho
A couple of good songs, a couple of ok ones but the rest just seems to be self indulgent jam sessions.
I’ve always thought Prince was overrated, this did nothing to change my mind.
Before listening to this album today I was never really a fan of Prince. And after listening to this album today I’m still not.
1999? More like 1982, am I right?
Very Long songs, not all my type. Very sexual Finally Over.
I'm always surprised how Prince has some immortal hits - and how I find most of his albums absolute chores to listen to. Especially the 80s stuff. Not dissimilar to Queen, who have some immortal hits, but who also have mostly mediocre albums.
I only ever liked one Prince song - When the doves cry - and its not on this album.
ok but too lo g
2.18
I didn't like this album very much. It really seemed to drag, and songs like "Automatic" were an ordeal to get through. Favorite Song: "Little Red Corvette"
Sounds old and tired
I’m sure this was great for the time, but in the modern era I find that I can’t listen to any of these songs past the first half before my mind starts to wander. I need a little more excitement—change the time signature, key, throw in some modified notes… anything. This album very much feels like a compilation of songs meant to be used as the backtrack to a transition between scenes in a movie. They need focal points.
While I have heard a few Prince songs here and there growing up, this album was honestly a tough listen.
Not trying to shit on Prince or anything, but this record is too 80's to be timeless or feel anywhere near relevant in 2025. Waves of this genre have come and gone 3 or 4 times since. Don't get me wrong. It's fun. Just feels old and irrelevant. I can't help but feel like the synth is super corny despite all the horny lyrics. My only guess is that copious amounts of cocaine are required for this to all make sense. Also that album cover. Woof.
Didnt like it
I respect what Prince did as an artist, as a pioneer, as a symbol and how much influence he had on many following generations. Unfortunately, the music itself is just not for me. I like some of the funky elements but it just feels dated to me.
Practically every song - and consequently the album as a whole - is incredibly long and repetitive.
Found this somewhat funky in places but it didn't really grab me and went on too long. I've discovered some good Prince through the list but this wasn't it.
Fucking hell Prince at least take me out to dinner first I get his whole aesthetic and how he wants to portray himself, but to me it just comes off as pretentious and a bit of a wanker A lot of these songs are at least 3 minutes too long, making them feel so, so repetitive. Not all songs were like that though especially towards the back end, such as Free and International Lover
Welp OK gravy knows how I feel about prince's music in general. Love the musician, hate the music. We'll see if that changes It didn't. Better than doves cry tho.
Most of Prince's music just does not click for me, as much as I have tried. This album was about how I remembered it, OK. Delirious is a great song (one of the few Prince songs I really enjoy). 1999 and Little Red Corvette were also big hits. After those 3, the rest of the album is a bit of a slog to get through at times. Maybe if the songs were longer, especially Automatic and Lady Cab Driver...
This Prince fella seems to know his way around a bedroom. If I were a dancing man, and if this were the 80s, this record would be the shit. Unfortunately I am not a dancing man and it’s not the 80s. These songs are cooler than I expected but I can’t handle just how 80s they sound most of the time. I know it was the Wild West of synthetic instruments, but damn. Prince could play, wish we coulda heard more of that. Also this album seems to be the basis of Bruno Mars’ entire career.
not really my vibe, i feel like a lot of the songs were way longer than necessary, i think i would enjoy this a lot more if i were like drinking or at the clüb but listening sober in my room isnt doing it for me. i ended up skipping through a few of the songs but they weren't *bad*, just kind of went on for longer than i liked without like switching it up or anything. the synths were funky but they kind of annoyed me, im sure they were cool when he was the first guy making that sound but considering how many ppl have bit his style in annoying ways in the many years since this came out im sick of it by now. umm favourite song something in the water
80s synth pop

too funky? too sexual? too repetitive?
There are some classic tunes here! Recommend listening on headphones. I expect high production levels, excellent musicianship, multi-octave vocals, and I'm getting all that and more. Not a fan of electro-techno keyboards that are all over this album, but at the time this was recorded, it was kinda mandatory. With songs averaging over six minutes long, there's a lot of repetition. Make that A LOT of repetition. In fact, put that very close to TOO MUCH repetition. My expectations are being lowered with each passing song. Admitting that I'm both old and old-fashioned, the f-bombs in LETS PRETEND WERE MARRIED strike me as 80s-fashionable but unnecessary. Coming into this album, I was sure it would warrant 4 or 5 stars, but ultimately, for me anyway, it'll fall somewhere between 3 and 4. This album was probably remarkably cutting edge in '82, but doesn't cut it today. Ultimately boring. ⭐⭐ ________________________________ 🎧 LPs reviewed: 64 🎧 LPs left to review: 933 🎧 LPs I found great/relevant enough to be mandatory listens (5): 14 🎧 LPs I *might* include in my own list (4): 17 🎧 LPs I will certainly *not* include in mine (1-2): 18
Groovy yet somehow kind of boring?
Such a strong start but songs were either too long or too focused on sex... or both lmao. Not a bad album but won't be coming back to it quickly
I can respect Prince’s talent, but I’ve just never connected with the music and that continued with this 80s funky + electro-synthy album. I don’t mind the lengthy tracks when they have some cool funk jams going; but overall the lyrics, tone, and feel don’t grab me (lady cab driver is a great example of both). If the sound doesn’t grab you, this album just doesn’t cut it. Good musician though and some strong instrumental parts, I just don’t dig the package they’re in.
ziopera se era infoiato prince
Too poppy for my taste. Not terrible though. 2/5.
Well it's 1999. I'm afraid I didn't have the patience for this. I love the fact that Prince existed in the world but I never been bitten by the bug.
I wasn’t a big fan of the new wave songs. Good exploration but I don’t think it’s for me
I'll be honest this was mid AF. The mainstream songs were the highlights and the rest of the album was mediocre imo. In the war between MJ and Prince, MJ is the winner for sure. I expected more from Prince.
Bem massante de ouvir, esperava mais
omg omg parisnsi prinsssiiiii huudan huudan niin ljaa tällä hetkellää diung diung diiung deliiroious ding ding ding dung.. aivan uskomaton poppiseksistara. 1980-luvulla tämä mies seksikkäin maailmassa! diung diung diiung deliiroious ding ding ding dung.. se on panomies... panee vaan.. no panee panee!! panee kun samalla diung diung diiung deliiroious ding ding ding dung.. anna mun haravoida pikkuviiksiäsi pliiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiis anna haravoida... diung diung diiung deliiroious ding ding ding dung.. diung diung diiung deliiroious ding ding ding dung.. diung diung diiung deliiroious ding ding ding dung.. diung diung diiung deliiroious ding ding ding dung.. diung diung diiung delirious
Starts well with the two singles that continue to get airtime as they are great funky tunes. Thereafter I lose interest fairly rapidly - 80's funk not my bag especially slap bass and the quality of the tunes gets weaker as album progresses.
I thought I would love this but I grew increasingly tired of it as I neared the end of it. It's an okay album. I think Purple Rain is better despite it being a soundtrack. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
This album is fine, kinda goofy and fun in a slightly dated way. But it does not need to be a double LP at all. None of these songs need to be longer than 6 minutes, and the ones that don't know when to end go on for absolutely no reason. Maybe I'd like it more if it was more streamlined, but I also don't get why this was so popular when it came out.
I know this is going to sound sacrilegious to some, but after listening to this album, it seems to me to be really overrated. I never cared for the singles off of this record, but went into it with as open of mind as possible, even hoping to like it. But I found several of these songs really redundant and even more repetitive, seeming to go on forever. Most of them were just too long. I never have been a fan of 80s electronic pop, and this album just reaffirms that for me. The last song, International Lover was probably the one I liked best. But, I just don’t get the critical acclaim and love for this album. Two stars from me.
A little bit of Prince goes a long way.
Yeah, noo.
I appreciate that Prince is an icon, but I just can’t click with his music. 2.5
5
Sorry, y'all. I respect the hell out of him, but it just ain't my bag. 2/5
Really don't rate this - repetitive, vain and dated
80s slop
radio music
Perdón pero me aburrió un poco.
Dunno about this one. 1 2 punch then falls off a cliff
I prefer Prince's funky stuff rather than the radio pop-friendly songs. Not a huge fan of this or Purple Rain.
I tried, but I think I drifted off somewhere around the seven hour mark. Five and a half hours later when I started paying attention again Prince was still bouncing his indefatigable purple booty off all the walls and having marathon sex sessions with everything in sight. The poster child for ADHD and short man syndrome.
same song
Prince is the Stephen King of music. Talented, but can't write an ending for shit. I don't know about his views on weird teen sex, though. Pretty much every track here could be cut in half and nothing of value would be lost. Having said that, an album like that would still only get 3 stars at best from me, so the fact this bloated thing is solidly over an hour long means that I'm sorry Mr Nelson, but it's a 2 from me - I just don't get your stuff.
Okish..but pretentious
Not my vibe
This was disappointing
I find it hard to believe this man goes on to write Nothing Compares 2U after this... First couple of songs were great, after that noise. Pretty disappointed. I thought it will be better...
Starts well but then it’s very “bah bah bah” (hard to illustrate in words) but erratic sounding it was not pleasant
Very long and very repetitive
Second Prince album of the list. Couple of decent songs and a whole lotta shit. 9 minutes per song is just self-indulgent - guy needed an editor to be firm with him.
Negative points for the songs that unnecessarily go on forever. Prince, like Bowie, sorry not gonna upvote just because.
Somehow not as good as I remember it. 5/10
That was tough listening, again because I really thought that when I at some point I'd give Prince the time of day I'd absolutely love him, after only knowing Purple Rain (song, not the album) and loving it. For the second time I'm left sorely disappointed. 80s pop dross to be honest. Almost made it to the end but I just couldn't anymore. I'd love for someone to explain the attraction of prince to me. Maybe you had to be there.
Outside of the few hits, I wasn't vibing
International Lover
I learned that I am not a fan of him or his lyrics
2, maybe 3, songs by Prince & then I'm done. several of these just ramble on, & on. I don't get the huge hype-too many falsettos, overly synthesized
Starts of well then fizzles out
I wanted to love this album. The very first song has a line that goes "I don't wanna die, I'd rather dance my life away" for cryin out loud! But... I just didn't. The songs were too long. There was too much fake digital computer-sounding stuff and that's not really my jam. I don't know. I really like the Prince songs that I like, so I'll just give this a rating and keep it moving. No need to stay negative.
And so begins listing to the 1001 albums you must listen to before you die! So this is where the expression "party like it's 1999" comes from! Sure, you may love purple, but do you love it as much as Prince? That is quite the sexually charged album. Not really my thing, but the melodies sure are catchy anyway! Song Stuck in my head for the rest of the day: Let's Pretend We're Married
I thought I'd like it more, it was solid. Interesting. I'll listen again sometime, but for now, it was kinda OK and kinda not my thing. 2 stars. If I put in effort, I think it would be more, but I'm not really inclined to do so right now.
The first 4 songs were pretty great. My interest went downhill after that to just wanting it to be done by the end. Not really sure how to rate this.
Not bad but never been a massive fan of Prince 5/10
Prince tends to be a bit much for me really. He's got some catchy songs and a couple of them were on this album, but actually I found it was more nostalgia and not that I actually liked them. I thought Little Red Corvette was my fave from this album but it just sounded quite dated. :( I didn't like this album. Fave Track: 1999 Rating: 2
Not a fan. Thought this was super boring and repetitive. Felt like it was designed for the radio rather than for any artistic pursuit
Not for me.
2,5
Too 80s for me
At least accurately pessimistic about life in the 21st century and thus the need to rage like it’s the end of the 20th. At least that’s what I think he was saying.
This was much worse than I was expecting. Good poppy start but then just becomes annoying.
Didn’t mind this at first, but then it became way too sexual. Some tracks were also way too long!
You blinded me with 80s
it is not awful in the musical sense, but so awful in many others
Not my style. Super 80s
Never liked Prince or his music, but he certainly was a clever little man. He knew how to write and perform a hit (whether I like them or not). Obviously I knew the singles, but the rest? Not a lot to grab my attention really, it just drifted on by...
I started out enjoying it but my rating just kept dropping as it went on. Every song was too long, too same-y, and too horny. A word of advice to all musicians everywhere from now until the end of time: never put actual sex noises in your songs ever. I guarantee your audience who's probably just listening while debugging some code at work is not as horny as you were when you recorded the song.
I don't know what to think about this. Some good, some meh. He definitely has done some epic stuff, but this, to me, isn't one.
A few great tracks hidden amongst a toddler playing a synth. Overly simple, way too repetitive. The 80s were a bad time for music.
80s fetish music. Each song sounded basically the same. Loud overproduced 80s crap that has not aged well. Microplastics in the balls right here. 3/10
I really love Prince, I think he was one of the best live performers ever and I would’ve loved to see him in concert. However I feel like the magic of that wasn’t quite caught yet with this album, it didn’t fully show his skills as one of the best guitarists/frontmen in the business! Stronger start but tails off toward the end. Favourite track: 1999
4.5/10 First half ok. Second half terrible and way too long Highlight: Little Red Corvette
M'n derde Prince.
Horny the album
My first Prince album and apparently I don't get Prince. A lot of these tracks far outstay their welcome without evolving in any interesting way and the whole thing feels really self indulgent. Honestly struggle with being able to name a standout track too. A shame.
Not for me YNN
The opening 3 tracks are really good. Unfortunately the rest of the album is a bit of a slog. The remaining songs are just self indulgent and far too long. Only one of them is under 5 mins. Down-marked accordingly. 2+ Stars.
I want to like Prince, and I'm still holding out for that to happen. But this record didn't do it for me. Entirely too 80s with a serious lack of any of the guitar intricacies that I hear about often when it comes to Prince's music. Lots of the tracks on here border on annoying. Looking forward to Prince redeeming himself because this wasn't it.
Very funky 80s pop. little red corvette was my favorite song from the album
Prince is ultra talented and the first two songs of this album are mega popular. That being said, the songs were all too long and at certain points it felt like I was on a bad trip.
cant be bothered to listen to the whole thing 2/5
Not my favourite album. Weird music, will probably give it a relisten sometime halfway through the entire thing.
i just cannot get behind this except for a couple songs
Ok album, 1/2 songs that stood out but nothing I would come back to. High 2.
Not a fan of 80s music. I just can't bring myself to enjoy it.
Some funky songs, not really my style
It's good, but it feels kinda... uninspired?
Very lengthy songs. Gets a little too weird for me, but you can hear the talent. "Free" was the standout to me.
mehhhhhhhhh
Nope. I didn't find anything moving on this album.
The exploded synthesizer passages are really interesting and pretty cool. Except for a few songs, I find it to be quite boring pop music. At least, I haven't been able to get attached to it.
Sorry, this was just too damn 80's for me. Respect to Prince, but this is not my jam.
I wish I enjoyed this record as much as I know other do. Prince is a terrific musician, but the hyper synth sound doesn't click with me.
Sounds like Richard Simmons workout music
Boring and lots of long songs that never change
I just don’t like prince’s music to be honest it verges on too long and too corny for me, some songs are fine though 2/5
Nicht meine Richtung
Funky. But that isn't enough to make it interesting to me.
Did not enjoy this
Zu gleich
Didnt like it that much personally. But some cool beats here and there
I've enjoyed the two other Prince albums we've had but 1999 is not one of his better efforts. It incorporates a lot of bad 80s themes and sounds and doesn't lead anywhere near the sort of stuff I prefer from him. Couple of good tracks at the start, although I didn't like 1999 in 1999 and that was its third release, at least two too many. More misses than hits on this for me so probably a 2 since I didn't even particularly enjoy the hits, I'll just listen to Purple Rain and Sign O The Times for my Prince stuff thank you.
Really disappointing compared to the previous Prince albums we had. Just too 80s, not as cutting or as catchy as the other albums we had. Also the title track really grates on me, which downgrades it to a 2.
I am sure he is talented, but I could not tell at what on this album. 80's coke music....
Overrated
Talented but just not for me.
Didn’t love it honestly… wanted to like it more
Meh
