Ngl as soon as it said prince I was like nope I guess I am skipping these lol

El cierre muy bueno pero suena muy ochentero más que 90s.

Summary: The genre switching and tendency for staccato make this a challenging album for me. There are some grooves on here and it starts strong but quickly falls off for me. I kept waiting for another track that spoke to me but it never came. Prince's style just doesn't really work for me and if this is representative of his catalog, we can part ways with the possible exception of a track here and there. Track by track notes Well... the intro is not my kind of thing but luckily isn't that long. Track 1 - 1999 Are there multiple singers? I cannot tell if Prince has multiple vocal tracks or if there are guest(s). Definitely a groove. I could see this getting on some party playlists. Track 2 - Little Red Corvette Quite the tone shift from track 1, almost a genre change. More of a chill driving song. Decent. Track 3 - Delirious Did we change genre again? This song is charming but goofy. Track 4 - Let's pretend we're married I'll stop commenting on how different each track is. This one has a nice driving beat but feels a bit more raw than previous tracks. The "being nasty" part of this song is a turn off for me. Skip! Track 5 - D.M.S.R. I think I get where this song is going but I kept waiting for it to come together and be less choppy. Not really my thing. Track 6 - Automatic I have to mention the song lengths only because this one and the last few I've looked up to see how much longer they were as I was a bit tired of them after a couple minutes. 7, 8 and 9 minutes for repetitive songs can work but these aren't working for me. Track 7 - Something In The Water This track was... fine. No complaints but forgettable. Track 8 - Free Got distracted and forgot to listen to this song the first time around. It's a nice song. Nothing I would seek out to listen to again. Track 9 - Lady Cab Driver I didn't like it. Another long one as well. Track 10 - All The Critics Love U In New York I got bored and didn't get through the whole track. Track 11 - International Lover This song is probably fine but my ears are tired of this album.

A funky, sexy party, unfortunately my mind started to wonder a bit. The album really didn’t hook me in.

Um. I thought Prince was tight and funky? This was just a lackluster mixtape set to porn. Artist formerly known as good, more like

Album carried by the two singles, on the whole the songs go on a bit too long for my liking. Nothing offensive to my taste, just fine - 2.5/5

2.5/5 Some songs are funky and fun and because of the nostalgia, they are enjoyable. Found myself wanting the album to end and songs felt a bit repetitive. It could play in the background somewhere and id pay it no mind.

It was okay. Like mellow disco, none of them were bangers for me

5/10. Not my cup of tea but listening made me appreciate how much modern pop music is inspired by Prince.

Pretty snazzy blud did not release this in 1999‼️

Sexist lyrics, plastic music. At least now I remember why I hated the 80s.

Hij maakt vast goeie nummer, ik vind niet dat ze op dit album staan

I mean the guy is a genius for sure, I'm honestly just not a huge fan of most of the music on this album. I can see the historical value, just not my style kinda.

I can fully recognize that Prince is talented. The album is just painfully 80s.

Prince is one of those artists (or "The Artist...") who I've always felt I *should* like. Back in the day, I liked the singles when I heard them around but not felt compelled to buy an album. A couple of years ago I tried the "Sign of the Times" album and just liked the singles but wasn't that fussed about the rest of it. So, going into this I expect to like "1999" and "Little Red Corvette" and not be bothered about the rest. Let's see... ...Yeah. That's kind of how I feel about this. I like some of the more jam band sounding stuff. I like it musically. It just sounds a bit "light" or "airy" or something. I feel like it doesn't have any low end or grit. Maybe I need to turn the bass up on my speaker! But that's how I felt the last time I tried Prince too. Also it doesn't help that he's all about partying and having a good time and I don't like either of those things.

I’ve never listened to a Prince album and had high expectations but this really disappointed me. 1999 is a decent track but the rest just felt like filler, and it was all over the place. Some songs were stupidly long, 5 mins into let’s pretend we’re married I was thinking ‘where the fuck is this going?’. Lady cab driver redeemed it a bit but Jesus, 8+ mins..? Why?? From this 1001 album challenge I’ve discovered overly horny albums really bug me. Jesus Christ just have a wank mate. He sees himself as some sort of sex god but he comes a cross as a skeevy little creep.

Upbeat. Funky. Surprisingly electronic. Extremely, occasionally upsettingly, horny.

Okay, was it just me or were most of these songs way too long? I guess no one wanted to tell Prince that listening to the beat of the song over and over while he moans is unappealing.

Poppy, repetitive album with no real exciting moments besides the very beginning (1999) and about 30 seconds of Lady Cab Driver. This album could have been 30 minutes long and had the same impact. All of the songs are way too long for how little they actually provide. Definitely the worst of the Prince albums we have had so far.

I just don't think I get Prince. Could groove to some songs like 1999 but overall really was not vibing most of the time and confused at others (the crying in Automatic?) Songs were dragged out unnecessarily to the point where I kept having to look to see how much was left in each song. Prince is weird and I usually like weird but I actively hate his weirdness. Leaning very close to a 1 on this but had enough moments to warrant a 2.

Not my thing. Prince is probably one of the most overrated artists of all time.

I liked some of it but did not like the rest

Don’t get it.

Not really for me unfortunately. 1999 is a good song though!

Too weird

You know those videos called something like, “This is what English sounds like to non-English speakers?” Well, Prince’s 1999 feels like an album called, “This is what my favorite music sounds like to people who don’t like my favorite music.” I just struggle so much with Prince. On a superficial level, it sounds like music I’d like. But I don’t like it. I don’t like the over reliance on square synths. I don’t like the guttural sound of his chest voice or the muppet-esque tone of his falsetto. I don’t like the grooves and I don’t like that every song lasts 3 minutes too long. And yet, each of these elements have similarities to music I DO like. The instruments are well played and the concepts are sometimes interesting. It’s very perplexing. I think ultimately, it comes down to one thing: I don’t think Prince is a good songwriter. Two stars because I don’t like it, but not one star because clearly other people like it, so I think it’s a me problem.

right off the bat not my style, fine though, just not into it it's all blurring together it's not that interesting why won't automatic end it feels longer than 20 minute doom metal songs all of the moaning is weird

I liked the two songs I'd heard before. But the rest was not really doing it for me.

Not a fan. I know Prince is a legend, but it didn't do it for me.

Way 80’s - but overall a tad too out there for me

Very funny, not that good. Makes parodies seem understated.

Can't get into it at all. Maybe in another life where I partied and got shitfaced it would resonate with me more. Has some cool bass lines sometimes, that's all I could give stars for.

Decent music, but too self indulge over all.

Not my favorite Prince record, fun, synthy, repetitive. Horny in ways Kanye wishes he was. 2.5/5

Very sexual

Levyn avausbiisi on hyvä, mutta muuten ei jaksa innostaa.

Songs too long. Very fuck focused, which was nice. He crazy.

Fun, high energy, sexy. Too much synth and weirdness

not my genre I guess. Couldn’t get into it. Top Tracks: 1) 1999 2) Little Red Corvette

Not the biggest prince guy but man can he rip the guitar. Still enjoyed the album and listened to it a few times but probably won’t be coming back anytime soon. 2.5

Controversial opinion #1: I don’t get the cult worship/obsession with Prince. Some great songs, decent songwriter, musician and producer - but also a lot of guff…

The first four songs on the track were good and then the album progressively downgraded. Too many of the songs either involved or were entirely based on sex leaving many songs to come off as repetitive. Little Red Corvette was personally my favorite song on the album. The vocals are good and the song has a great tune and beat. Which can not be stated for many of the other songs on this album.

Overall: There is some interesting production, plenty here that was novel at the time. But ultimately it was underwhelming from a structural point of view, a ton of drawn out repetition both within a song and from track to track. I am not a huge fan of Prince's vocals, and lyrically it suffers from the same issues as above. You can only hear Prince say he loves sex so much before you get it and want something more substantive, particularly if songs are going to be so long. There are a few standouts like Something in the Water, but ultimately I think this album is skippable. 1) 1999 -Big synth boy -Very 80s drums -Nice vocals from the women -No change up leaves it feeling a bit long, but fun song. Plenty of interesting percussion and sounds 2) Little Red Corvette -Organ in the chorus, I think? Like how it fits in the pocket -Nice little solo -Lyrically underwhelming, but a nice song to listen to 3) Delirious -Goofy lead synth line but I liked it -Floaty, light rhythm -Sounds like a 60s song made with 80s instruments, kinda neat -Loses interest halfway through 4) Let's Pretend We're Married -80s percussion doing its thing -No one told Prince "no" about his vocal choices for better or worse -"Look you Martian, I'm not sayin' this just 2 be nasty I sincerely want to fuck the taste outta your mouth". Hmm. Okay 5) D.M.S.R. -Immediate notice, another song about dancing and sex. Prince knows what he wants -Spends a good 3 minutes in the middle of the song that sounds like it is going to begin fading out, but... doesn't -Furthering on that, it doesn't culminate into anything 6) Automatic -Pretty forgettable for a 9 and a half minute song -Standard fare for the album, a good half of it repeats the same part -Synth gets full at the end but by then you're checked out 7) Something in the Water (Does Not Compute) -Wait a second, this song is funky with it -Warpy sounding accenting riff, love it -Mix starts to grow at the mid point, actually keeps attention more than prior tracks -Still could have used a more explosive end rather than petering out again, but it was overall a good track 8) Free -Very distinct from the preceding tracks, which is a must at this point -Nice piano tone -I really do not like Prince's fried voice in this track -Otherwise, decent build up and release, was a nice break after the consistent dispersed funky mix of the album 9) Lady Cab Driver -Gorgeous bass riff and tone in the verse -Synth in the chorus almost sounds like a trumpet, sounds good. There is no trumpet listed on Wikipedia for instrumentation so I'm assuming it's the synth, anyway -Snare tone is more solid than the preceding tracks, gives it a crisp sound -3 minute mark, it's an 8 minute song, perfect time for the song to start a change unlike the prior long songs -Well, there isn't a change sonically, but lyrically it sure changes, accompanied by the sounds of a woman moaning -Cool section where the guitar solo fills in sections between a sustained organ -Solo itself is fine, mostly works with a good contrasting tone -...still 1:30 left in the track just to return to the start of the song and a repeating vocal line. Sounds nice but in terms of the progression of the song, seems unnecessary 10) All the Critics Love U in New York -Another return to what this album has mostly sounded like -The bass punches through the mix in a nice way, but the drumming never moves away from a standard beat, and like most of the other tracks the general rhythm relies on oft repeating empty space, rather than sustained chords. Not a bad thing on its own but every song for the most part operates like this and leaves a similar feeling from song to song 11) International Lover -I like the opening melody -Nice ballad -Not sure this works well as an end to the album cohesively. As a collection of songs, fine, but there isn't a lot of flow to the album, at least not one that allows this sort of ballad to work as a cap

Funky as shit, not my style but it's interesting so far. Going to have to re-listen to this at some point as I don't have enough time tonight. A little too old school funky for my taste but I see the appeal.

Meh. Really don't understand the hype about Prince.

Ekstremt 80-talls, ikke helt min greie.

Not that interesting

Very Princey sounding with very heavy synth and heavy breathing. D.M.S.R. has a good funk and makes me want me to pull out the cardboard. Overall, it seems very dated and not really enjoyable.

Bit muddled and dated

Nice singles. Long beat songs in the middle ruin it.

Not only is the whole album way too long, but each song goes on way longer than they should. I mean 1999 has 2 straight minutes of the same annoying riff while people chant "party!" with no change or anything interesting happening. Some of these songs could be decent enough as tight 3min fun pop songs, but instead they're 9 fucking minutes.

not my vibe. it bored me "Let's pretend we're married" and the beginning of "D.M.S.R." are good

I have heard about Prince but that was my first time listening him. This album had its moments but was not something that I would consider one of 1001 that I had to listen.

Nähedu. För 80-taligt sound

I bopped along to the first few songs. Would even throw a few on a running playlist. But got a little old.

Oof. I was excited when I saw it was a Prince album. Oof. After the first two songs it went downhill incredibly fast. What awful songs. And so damn long too.

Was a mix of ok and bad songs

Well crafted album. Saccharine sweet 80s synth and production gets a little exhausting for my personal taste. Something in the water was a quirky stand-up track.

It's Prince. Immensely talented, but I prefer some of his other work

Not really a fan of 80s pop music

Score: Manic Monday: 100 - 1999: 0.

Never was a Prince fan. Too over-produced and just too… 80s. So many synths. I mean I recognize his talent but I just can’t get into him.

IDK, kinda odd. What's with all the weird sexy time references.

Prince is all right. A few bangers here and there.

Not for me :)

Why ruin an alright album by putting sex noises in a song?!

I do not like Prince's music.

Some catchy funky bits, but mostly unmemorable and drags on

International Lover had my laughing very loudly 😂

Je comprends comment ça a été un album landmark, mais les chansons sont un peu drabes et répétitives.

I think that writing a song about an apocalyptic New Year’s Eve party at the end of the century is a cool idea, and if the song is catchy enough, you’ve got a mega-hit that will probably get repeat plays 18 years later. I like the way they switch up the vocalists early on (in 1999) though I have to admit, the slow bpms could never compete with stuff like the B52s when it came to dragging me onto the dancefloor. “Little Red Corvette”, the other hit, doesn’t do much for me, and its signature Linn LM-1 Drum beat pops up throughout album. I appreciate Prince’s brilliance, playing every instrument & writing every song, but the end result doesn’t appeal to me much.

I honestly don’t understand all the fuss over Prince. His hits here are pretty mediocre and dated sounding, especially the percussion. I wanted to give it 1 star but since I couldn’t make it all the way thru the album I’ll round it up in case I actually missed something of substance.

I know this artist but this album I don't like.

This CD has such an amazing reputation, and it's fine, but just not for me. Partly it's that it's just such an enormous wheel of cheese - the heavy synth, machine-like drums and endlessly-repeating riffs just have not aged well. It sounds like dance music for dance styles that don't exist anymore, like cotillion. Like on something like the last 3 minutes of "Let's Pretend We're Married", it sounds like something is supposed to be happening, but then it doesn't - that's probably dancing. It's not actively unpleasant to listen to, but I wouldn't put it on again.

Not my favourite of Prince's albums. He evolved as he went along, and I regard the albums that followed better.

I didn't realise prince was THIS horny. It's fun but I can't see myself dancing to it unless the vibe was strong. Some vocals are a little grating. Got a soft spot for some of the bubbly synths and drums for sure, but this album is way too long to be 90% upbeat dance songs

This one isn't really clicking for me. It's a little cheesy and the tracks don't feel like they develop very much past the first verse/chorus cycle, despite a number of the songs being well over 5 minutes. I also feel like Prince's guitar work is missing. This is probably more enjoyable on the dance floor than in an office.

Not bad, not great

Little Red Corvette is 10/10. So far the rest isn't bad but doesn't do much for me. 2-3 /5

People of a certain age might remember those keyboards that, in addition to the usual 88 keys, had a dizzying array of buttons on the giant panel above the keyboard itself. Whenever I sat down to practice, I would end up just pissing about with all the buttons, instead of actually playing the sodding thing. Every conceivable sound was there (3 options for a timpani!), along with a range of different rhythms and beats, and a feature called 'Automatic' that just spat out something pre-recorded. And it all sounded absolutely dreadful. Which is why I don't get how such an acclaimed record can sound, for way too much of it, like someone playing around with one of those keyboards in an effort to find the tinniest synth sound, before bashing away with reckless abandon. Even the famous tracks were quite grating in that respect. And then, out of nowhere, some actual songs: Lady Cab Driver and International Lover are great. As for the rest of it, I'll have to take people's word for it that it's as much of an accomplishment as it's said to be.

Singlarna från plattan är ju i alla fall okej. Tröttsamt med långa låtar.

Not my type. Skiped after 2 songs

Not terrible, but also not so enjoyable. 0 songs saved to my library.

There are people who are Prince fans. I am the other kind.

I remember seeing the video for 1999 back in the day, and it was so obvious that there is something different about Prince. I am familiar with the first three tracks from this album, but the rest was new music to me. "1999" and "Little Red Corvette" are okay. "Delirious" sounds so 80s, with electronic sounding drums, and keyboards. The rest of the album I would skip. The music doesn't draw me in, and I don't want to hear what Prince is singing about.

I just don't get Prince. Typical (boring) 80s sound with insubstantial vocals

First of all - the best songs here are legit great pop, rock, dance, whatever you want to call it: "1999" and "Little Red Corvette" - those 2 songs, what a start to the album. But the rest is a bit....dated? Aside from the voice (which I'll get to), for the most part the instrumentation, sounds, drum machines, synths just doesn't distinguish itself from a lot from this era. e.g. "Delirious" I hadn't heard in decades. and it sounds it... Too many long songs that sadly don't delve into 7/4 and long passages about rainbows or planets. Seriously: 8 minutes of a rather repetitive dance beat makes me lose interest. (also: "Automatic" is just messed up - listening to the crying while I had headphones on and lying down was creepy as hell and not in any sort of fun way.) Finishing with a positive tho: Prince's voice is the real star - he commands confidence in these songs. I feel like I write this in half of my reviews: I don't focus much at all on either vocals or lyrics except when they're distracting/bad. It's rare that I'll boost an album in my mind for this but I think this qualifies. I do wish there was a touch more of his guitar playing. 5/10 2 stars - the music overall is meh but vocals/swagger bring it up...but I can't bring myself to give it more than 2.

har aldri skjønt prince

Really long songs, very repetitive. The first 15 mins was great, but then it REALLY starts to drag on.

I found most of these songs a bit vague and boring. To be honest, some of the songs at the beginning I would've liked a lot more if they didn't sound like Prince kept the microphone a meter away from him and if the general mixing had been better. Also all songs on this album could've been cut in half as they just keep repeating the same minute over and over for 6 minutes each.

Repetitive and too 80's

never understood the hype and still don't

Expected better, nothing really stood out to me

So repetitive

Not really a fan of this type of music.

Something about this just doesn't click with me. It's probably a "me problem", honestly, but I can't pretend to have really enjoyed this much.

Ei varsinaisesti hivellyt korva tai edes muitakaan alueita kehossa. Ko. herran musa ei ole oikeastaan ikinä säväyttänyt millään tavalla.

I know, he's a genius, brilliant musician, great live performer ( i've even been to see him and quite enjoyed it ) but on record, just not for me ! Too far removed from what I like

Not his best

A favourite of Grant Cabaret Connor. At the time I hated Prince's music and couldn't understand the hype around him. To be fair I'm a long way from being a fan, but at least I can say I've seen him in the flesh, walking around Las Vegas on his stag do. First two tracks are ok. The rest is unlistenable rubbish

Not my taste. A few bangers but the rest are hard for me to make it through.

One or two classics. The remainder is pretty average

2/5 - I respect his body of work and that there is an audience that adores him, but Prince is not for me. *shrug*

1999's title track kicks off the record with a classic synth-funk sound, extremely catchy tunes and funny metaphoric lyrics. These positives are mostly appareant on Little Red Corvette, though I am not a huge fan of some vocal parts and effects. Delirious sounds slightly video-gamey with its squeaky synth-riffs, but it's catchy enough to be enjoyed. Unfortunately, the same video-gamey element and awkward instrumentals become more visible and annoying when continuing the record. The sharp synth riffs on Lets Pretend sound absolutely awful, DMSR and Automatic drag on and on (7+ minutes and barely anything new is added) and the last couple of tracks were a chore to get through. 2/5.

Not my cup of tea, cool synth and funk though. Some of the tracks seem really basic and cheesy. Overt sexual themes, can see why it might have been “different” in the 80s. Little red corvette favorite track.

Honestly, I was hyped for this, but it fell flat. Aside from the couple of hits, it sounded like Prince was experimenting to learn how to produce, and then just released his practices.

1999 and Little Red Corvette are the best songs on this album. The rest is overly drawn out nonsense. I don't get the prince hype. These songs don't need to be 8 minutes long.

Prince has a brilliant greatest hits album in him. This album has one of the tracks and even its two minutes too long

Just this weirdo electro funk for way too long. So hits tho

too tired to say anything else but every song on here is too long

I am baffled as to why a guy who can play guitar like Prince can fills his albums with the cheesiest, most boring songs.

A sto punto non so se sono io oggi che tollero poco, peró non mi é piaciuto Mi é sembrato un po noioso e generico, probabilmente sono io che sopporto poco il genere? non saprei ma ci potrebbe stare

Absolutely disappointing. I thought going in I would see what all the fuss is surrounding this "genius" but I feel now it was all overinflated. So boring and unimaginative. I tried to find some quantities in the tracks but not a thing. How sad.

Not a fan of this album. I had to stop after listening to the first three songs. With that being said, I can see how other people enjoy it. but its not for me.

Popular culture would say I’m supposed to like Prince, but I think he’s just a creep and this album certainly didn’t help.

Really boring and I had trouble getting through it. It dragged and I didn’t like it

Niet mijn muziek

I know I am supposed to like Prince; but this was such an emotionless drag on my soul. I would rather repair drywall than be bothered by the annoyance of the a truly dated sounding album, with blithering misfiring of sex appeal.

I hate prince

The one song I liked on this album turned into softcore 👎

mä! schade dabei schätze ich Prince und mochte sogar pearls sehr gerne aber 89/90 dunno...c

I only liked DMSR 🫣

Prince… no puedo con él… sorry… ya de pequeño nunca pude y hoy en día es un “next”… es como “regreso al futuro” nunca me atrapó…

Didn’t really enjoy anything besides the last song.

Meh apart from Little Red Corvette

eh, not my thing at all

Not good, too disco(y)? Not my vibe

Oh Prince. What a fricken little horndog. Very 80s, very synth, very funky. Not my cup of tea, Ive heard better Prince songs. Too nasty lol

Why is this album on this list? There’s 2 hits and they aren’t even that good. Songs that just go on and on doing nothing. Up to this point in his career there wasn’t too many defining tracks but they were coming soon! It’s hard to say you like prince but don’t like the bits where he’s finding himself. Which also is weird because he knew what he was but this feels like he hadn’t quite leaned in. And maybe prince is best when he’s being the most prince he can be which sadly isn’t this album.

Maybe wasn’t the best time for me to try and jump back into listening to the albums again.

Whilst I’m willing to accept the proclamations of people better qualified than I, that Prince is an excellent musician, I’m afraid that his type of music does not resonate with me at all. Very, very occasionally, I do hear a superb guitar solos which makes me take notice. I’m thinking here of Purple Rain. But on this album there is no such guitar work so I found it hard to like anything. 1/5 7/11/25

I have never "got" Prince. I have always found him to be overblown and irritating. I couldn't bring myself to listen to the whole album, despite my best efforts with gritted teeth,

Not fire at all

Really didn't find anything to like about this album. Dross.

Like the solos at the end of Lady Cab Driver but other than that, not feeling the party maaaaannnn.

didn’t know what to expect besides knowing he’s some purple famous guy in music. his songs are alright but this album just sucks. so have the albums i’ve been suggested to listen to on here.. i’ll give it a week because maybe i just got the lowest rated ones on the list or something.

This sounds in all ways like a parody record of what is wrong with this sort of music. Too long, horrible sounding synths, painful vocals. The one redeeming feature of Prince as an artist is his guitar playing and that's almost totally missing here. A touch listen. 1.5*

The best thing about this album is that it gives a very concrete example of what music I don't like.

I found this to be nearly unlistenable. I know Prince is talented and very popular. For some reason I just can't find my entry point. I would've skipped most of The songs on this if it weren't for so many friends who love and sing Prince praises, but because of that I made it a point to listen to every song completely until the very last track. And once he started doing the cabin pressure announcement thing, I just couldn't go on. On. I know it's silly and what not but it just seemed so cringy.

Picture this: 1982 I'm a senior in high school. Prince 1999 is on the charts. With enthusiasm i listen to it. Blank. So I listened again. Some emotions. So I listened again. Ahhh there it is : this shit sucks. 40plus years later. Still sucks

Not for me

I don't really know Prince and his music. The first twos are hits and I've heard many times before. Was looking forward to the rest, but it was all a bit disappointing.

Biggest load of sh*te ever since the last biggest load of sh*te ever two days ago (yesterdays was just an average load of sh*te).

I really didn’t like this at all

This whole album could have been released as just the solo track Little Red Corvette

Overrated, theatraal, vage softe klanken. Paar klassiekers wel.

Cheesy 80s drum machine and keyboard music. It sounds like Prince is snarling as he sings here. This was not enjoyable.

Niente di che

Boring

Not for me. 1/5

1/10. Well well too dated. Not a fan of Prince anyways.

ugh, don't know if I'll be able to hang through this whole album, not a prince fan at all..

I’m not convinced that this album isn’t a prank. It really sounds like prince just went wild over bop-it samples. I’m sure this was innovative in its day, but I can’t take it seriously.

The music that plays in hell, round 2. hated. (⌐☍_☈)

Title track is decent though Sussudio by Phil Collins is a better song

Songs i knew:2 Songs i like:0 Jesus christ, thank god that's over with. Took me 3 attempts to finish this album, a hard graft with lots of teeth gritting. I always thought I liked prince but thats based on that video of him shredding while my guitar gently weeps. Now I've had to sit through 1 hour 10 minutes of that I'm not sure I do like him as much as I thought. Sounds like a teenager who's just discovered how to use a synthesiser while refusing to sing directly into the microphone. Can't understand a word he's saying half the time and the other half is him basically having a wank with porn on the background. Mid 1.

Might as well call this Jizzing: The Album Never been big into Prince. Talented? Sure. Prolific? Absolutely. International sex midget? So he’d have you believe. His stuff’s always left me a bit cold. Purple Rain is obviously flames 100, but his output is a bit spotty. 1999 is a brilliant tune though. I recall New Year’s Eve of 1999 fondly - Nick arrived from the birth of his first child and proceeded to squirt vodka into my mouth using some syringes he’d stolen from the hospital. What a guy. Actually this may have been NYE 2000, which still counts as it’s mentioned in the song and it’s a good anecdote, and I can’t be arsed editing this. He’s managed to formulate the single most annoying synth sound of all time on Delirious (Prince, not Nick). Impressive. “Let’s pretend we’re married and go all night” - is he taking the piss? Maybe he’s being sarcastic. MAYBE HE’S NOT AS MUCH OF A SHAGGER AS HE MAKES OUT. To give him his due, he is excellent at extended on-the-nose sex metaphors (Prince, not Nick). International lover is just ridiculous. Ultimately I think my issue with nearly all of Prince’s stuff is the production. Every note is quantised, every snare sound gated. It just gives everything this weird plastic-y sound and strangles the life out of it. This has its moments (well, one moment), but by and large I think it’s a bit shite and way too long. Guess I like my sex jams shorter and a bit more rugged. Best tracks: 1999 Worst tracks: The rest of it P.S. “two thousand zero zero” would imply the year 200,000 AD, so either he’s shit at maths or he’s doing a very big shag (Prince, not Nick).

Garbage music from the most overrated musician in the history of pop and rock. Yes, you read that correctly. Weird little midget gets a few hits here and there but otherwise his output sucks. Fight me, IDGAF.

I found this very irritating.

I hated this so much

Except for 2-3 of his most famous songs I've never really listened to Prince before. I don't think this is his most famous and popular album and I'm not sure if there is a correlation but a lot of the songs seems kind of meh. Its not bad in any means, its just not that good or anything that sticks out. Nothing that makes we want to come back and listen again.

Repetitive and feels dated, the production especially. Some of the synth lines and samples sound straight out of a sega game. Uncomfortably over sexual in places.

Few catchy songs but the production is achingly dated, it probably sounded like the sound of the future at the time but it's aged like milk!

Stupid dance music, don’t like

Besides the title track this isn't much to my taste at all 1/5

They could never make me like you Prince

Don’t like prince couldn’t listen to the first 3 songs and stopped listening

Starts off OK but loses steam after the first 3 songs. Too much electronic drum machine and the songs get longer and drag on. Would not listen again.

Didn't like it at all, 1.5/5. Had to stop listening ffs.

His singles are, for the most part, very well known and liked. So I was really interested to hear this whole album. How disappointing. So many people say what a talented multi-instrumentalist he is, but very few say what a self-obsessed egotistical twat he is. Unfortunately it is the latter description that comes over in the rest of this album and the good work that was done in the famous tracks is completely undone by the rest of the album. Deserves no better than a very disappointing 1

Morceaux longs et très monotones ...

Two decent hit singles followed by an hour I will never get back, an hour when I could have been listening to something great, an hour when I heard 9 songs which are all contenders for the worst song I have EVER heard. Finally 'International Lover' arrived and claimed the prize! I would rather listen to Right Said Fred singing 'I'm too Sexy' on a loop for an hour than listen to this again, and hear Prince going on, and on, and on, and on about how he is so sexy. I can't stand Right Said Fred but at least they were having a laugh, Prince seemed to believe it all and it's so boring!!! He was an incredible musician, he wrote and performed some great stuff, but only when he dropped this egotistical nonsense!

Not his best work

Couldn't relate much, doesn't align with my taste.

Achei paia

I stopped at D.S.M.R. Prince is one of the greatest musical minds of all time. He was an incredible multi-instrumentalist and an absolute legend in every sense of the word.. With that said, I hated this album so much. I didn’t even finish it, and even skipped a couple songs. All of the tracks seem to be at least 2 minutes longer than they needed to be. I’d rather scoop my eardrums out with a cocaine spoon than listen to this ever again

Every song is one minute of shitty synth keyboard played over and over for 8 minutes. Felt like i was watching a corny 80s rom com. I dont understand prince.

I almost didn't finish listening to it. Perhaps if I had been around at the time of release, I'd have a greater appreciation for this album. There were some moments on the record that had me moving but those were few and far between.

A few of these songs are catchy, but that's the only positive thing I have to say. Every song is way too long. Prince's voice is over the top melodramatic and just sort of weird. My favorite was Lady Cab Driver until the sexual part ruined it.

All the songs sound the same and are too long.

I just don't get Prince. I liked Little Red Corvette, that's about it.

Gefällt mir nicht.

eh i didn’t really like this album. the first song 1999 is great. a timeless classic. but the rest of the album didn’t stick out to me and i was just bored while listening to this album

Couldn't even finish it. I can't figure out the hype with Prince.

Not my thing

Not a big fan

Yuck!!

i don't get the hype

Listened to about half of it. Obviously there's a lot of talent and cultural relevance here but it just isn't my cup of tea.

Didn’t do much for me

Everytime I listen to Prince it just sounds like he's trying to do things to my earhole non-consensually. This album was the worst case of it. This should never have been a 70 minute album. 1999 the song was pretty good. DMSR needs to be erased off of this planet. I hated this album. I know a 31 year old white male born in 1992 probably wasn't Princes target audience for this album but I don't care.

So long, so sexual. Prince makes Robert Plant look elementary with his insane level of sexual groans and innuendos. The music just doesn't do it for me. Also why did this album come out in the 1980s?

If I could rate this album lower than 1, I would. It's rubbish. Below average, made-in-his-bedroom-when-he-was-14-and-thought-it-was-cool, drum machine Casio VL-Tone electro garbage. Couldn't make it through a whole song, and every sung sounded like the last. Weak.

Not sure how to explain this album, just a generally very annoying record. I feel obliged to like Prince’s music but I really hate it

Not my cup of tea.

Not my cup of tea. The 80s pop music seems to be created with the latest technologies for the time but these techs sound retro now and they are not like the ones from 60s and 70s that are not digital and still sound good.

Title track great. This album hasn't aged well. Some of the beats and melodies sound like they have been done by a three year old. Songs are way too long and repetitive. Boring, will never listen to this again

Just boring. I was originally going to review this with "horse shit". But it's worse than that - it's boring horse shit. And Free is worse than that again. I have a mate who really likes Prince - the sort of bloke who hears one song and decides he's going to like everything the artist does. Little Red Corvette doesn't make this a great album (you can keep 1999 - that's more of the same). Great albums need more than one or two decent tunes, and this is just boring as fuck.

Couldn't enjoy this. With the risk of annoying Prince fans i found it repetitive, turgid music. It felt like a really lazy album. Probably wouldn't appear in my top 10000 albums.

I've never understood the fuss about Prince; there's nothing on this album that wasn't already going on: Nile Rodgers had been doing this stuff for years. Bowie, Heaven 17, numerous second rate new romantic bands. It's merely not very good disco music.

Esperaba mucho y no me gustó.

I dislike this immensely. Prince is cheesy and while he's a really great musician, none of it ever leaves that cheesy 80s lane. Also not helping was his planet sized ego. This just isn't for me.

Kinda like the Madonna album, there are two good songs and the rest are trash.

This album is very bad. Not good! Prince is considered an enigma, a prodigy, one of the greats - but this album is just not good. The album starts off okay, 1999 and Little Red Corvette are half-decent songs. Everything after is downright terrible. Most tracks are 6-9 minutes and don't really offer much beyond a standard chorus/verse structure, so these tracks don't really go anywhere - why not make them 3-4 minutes then? I understand that this is a concept album and there's some story but that doesn't excuse making the music crap for the sake of whatever story he's trying to tell. I partially hope there's a better Prince album in this list but then I'd risk having to listen to some of his crap songs.

Prince is actually one of the greatest guitars of all time but I barely hear any noticeable guitar parts, with the exception of a couple songs. A damn shame. Most of these songs are stuck in a very specific era of time. Which is hard to listen to if that vibe isn’t popular at the current moment. Most of this album doesn’t transcend time, which is the sign of a great album, in my opinion. I like a few Prince songs, and I’m kinda into his whole aura. But the majority of this record sucks. It’s very Madonna-ish.

Prince can rip on the guitar (although you wouldn't know it) and he's got a great voice but man, this was not enjoyable, almost turned it off a few different times. No real highlights for me, maybe Delirious because I found it pretty catchy? DMSR is one of the worst songs I've ever heard. A lot of the production on this album is pretty cringe.

Prince was an immensely talented musician who used his abilities to create awful music. It's like if all Monet did was take big steaming dumps on canvases.

did not like.

1999: 3/5. It's a classic, but nothing special by today's standards. Little Red Corvette: 4/5. Nice beats, I'm a fan of synth. Delirious: 3/5. Nothing remarkable. Let's Pretend We're Married: 1/5. Lyrics get real awful by the end, so sad. D.M.S.R.: 1/5. Yawning... Automatic: 1/5. Cease the cheesiness at the end, my god. Something in the Water: 1/5. This song could turn frogs gay. Free: 1/5. Uninspiring. Lady Cab Driver: 1/5. Song not to hear in public, and maybe not at all. All the Critics Love U in New York: 2/5. One minute song gone for too long. International Lover: 1/5. And here I thought this was post-nut clarity. Nope.

Not my taste.

No, tremendo.

Não gostei de nada, mas não gosto de Prince então dificulta

לא שמעתי את כולו, קצת חזר על עצמו ושיעמם אבל אולי זה כי לא היה לי הרבה כוח לשמוע אותו

Auf seine eigene Art extrem nervig. 1.1

I don't like prince that much.

I just don't get why Prince is considered so special.

Made me kinda uncomfortable

This album confirmed my long-held opinion that Prince's head is so far up his own backside that he just ponces on stage

Not my style

Honestly very repitive, the weird deep vocals at the beginning didn't add anything to the song except for a creepy feeling. Might have to try another prince album... I don't think this one is a great representation of his work.

Beautifully

Amazing that this was written in the early 80s. First half is great. Second half is decent and closes strong.
