Not my era of pop but Prince is truly a king.

Gonna be honest a lot of these songs tripped me out. But I was also high so. Idk it's a classic, just not my style. 7/10.

Many of the lyrics and highly repetitive elements to the songs detract from the listening experience for me. The instrumental elements are enjoyable to listen to, particularly the less repetitive parts, and the artist's technical talents and passion are apparent. Never was a Prince fan. Too over-produced and just too… 80s. So many synths. I mean I recognize his talent but I just can’t get into him.

Really fun sexy 80s funk! Super cool and sophisticated. Love the idea of an apocalypse-anticipating album and all of the freedom and frivolity that brings if you think you're experiencing the last few years of existence. Not 100% catchy enough for me or maybe I just had album reviewing fatigue today from trying to catch up!?

This album is a ton of fun. Prime 80s rock through and through. As a metalhead, I'm surprised at how much I enjoyed this album. Little Red Corvette is stuck in my head, and all of the singles are very good. The "filler" songs keep up the feel-good vibes. 1999 is the album that supposedly catapulted Prince to stardom, and it's not hard to see why.

Sounded a lot like what I imagined a Prince album would sound like. Some fun, funky hits. But also a few that last forever, and a few that sounded like Prince was definitely trying to make a move on me.

A breakthrough and a template that others are still following even today. Several absolutely 5⭐tracks, and a few that meander and are just too long.

Ginormous in talent, if not in stature. I was fully on board for the first half hour and then my interest dropped like a stone. The singles are great, the musical treatises bored me senseless. Sorry, Prince. I’m obviously having a bad day. Something definitely did not compute. But for 1999 alone you’re a star.

Released in 1982... What? The hits off this album are timeless but many of the deep cut are definitely 80s synth pop. This is well produced album with Prince playing most of the instruments. I admire his talent but when found something interesting he over does it. You can here a lot of the soundscapes that eventually made Purple Rain such a great album but here I feel he was still figuring out how to use the electronic precussion and synth pads.

When Little Red Corvette was popular I knew it had something to do with sex but didn’t know exactly what. I was pretty naive at 14. I thought I’d have a hard time deciding whether to rate this album a 4 or a 5 but it turns out that, as much as I like a bunch of the songs, the album falls a bit short.

An unabashed Prince fanatic, this has never been my favorite album in his catalog, and I went in thinking this would be a 4-star rating. But upon listening to this album with the intention of rating it, I developed a new appreciation for just how remarkable this collection of songs is. The opening salvo of "1999" to "Little Red Corvette" to "Delirious" is like a best-of album right out of the gate, and while the PMRC freaked out about "Darling Nikki," this album is so chock-full of sexually explicit and implicit material, it's way more sexually inflammatory than anything on "Purple Rain." Whether "Little Red Corvette" is specifically a reference to his one-night-stand's pussy or just a metaphor about how "fast" she is, it's a huge pop hit about casual sex. And "Let's Pretend We're Married" features one of the nastiest lines in pop music with "I sincerely want to fuck the taste out of your mouth." The fact that he follows that up, seconds later in the same song, with what sounds like a prayer stating "I'm in love with God and that's the only way, 'cause you and I know we gotta die someday" is profoundly confusing in so many ways. But, his true genius (and yes, Prince deserves that title) is not that he revels in salacious material — many terrible artists have relied on that to get attention and it can easily descend into smut — it's that it's just one part of an incredibly vital matrix of ideas and music and attitude and musical/lyrical freedom. Up until the end, Prince was taking chances and pushing boundaries. And musically, as an instrumentalist and vocalist, he's in a class of his own. Now that he's taken his songwriting to a whole new place on this record, it's exciting as hell. I do think the album drags, it's a little too techno for my taste in places, but I appreciate the clinical robotic-ness of this with his wild vocal acrobatics tugging at one another. So it's not a perfect album, but only because this was an artist creatively on fire and willing to indulge his creative fancy. That was something of a detraction later in his career — not all his misses were nearly as interesting — but here, even the relative low points are stellar.

Hearing this one made me appreciate Purple Rain more. This one's fun and all, and I have fond memories of hearing "Delirious" when it was the fresh hot single and thinking it was quirky and cool, but this album felt very slight compared to Purple Rain in terms of its arrangements. Also, every song lasted way too long. Apart from the singles, I really liked "All the Critics Love U In NY."

He had me with a couple of classic bangers early doors, some irresistible, sexy grooves and an array of forward-thinking, electrified sounds. He lost me by dragging it all out for so long that the bangers dried up, the grooves became resistible (albeit still sexy), and the sounds became old hat by the time the song ended.

1999: 3/5. It's a classic, but nothing special by today's standards. Little Red Corvette: 4/5. Nice beats, I'm a fan of synth. Delirious: 3/5. Nothing remarkable. Let's Pretend We're Married: 1/5. Lyrics get real awful by the end, so sad. D.M.S.R.: 1/5. Yawning... Automatic: 1/5. Cease the cheesiness at the end, my god. Something in the Water: 1/5. This song could turn frogs gay. Free: 1/5. Uninspiring. Lady Cab Driver: 1/5. Song not to hear in public, and maybe not at all. All the Critics Love U in New York: 2/5. One minute song gone for too long. International Lover: 1/5. And here I thought this was post-nut clarity. Nope.

Listened Before? N Oh Prince. How we miss you. This album is an absolute dance masterpiece. That being said, I can't just listen to it for the most part. The singles are nice, and the music is unobtrusive but the songs are just LONG. If I were a hardcore Prince fan I would absolutely love it! Added to Library? Good not great. I enjoyed the first half better. The second half sort of felt like kraftwerk on an aphrodisiac and was a bit much for me.

Очень ОЧЕНЬ странный альбом, который мягко говоря вывел меня из зоны комфорта и мне трудно сказать, в хорошем смысле или плохом. По сути это такой приятный и энергичный фанк восьмидесятых, но принц решил и так изъезженные тексты про любовь сделать в 29394616 раз более похотливыми, иногда очень детально описывая свои желания. В таких песнях самих по себе нет ничего плохого, конечно же, но у всего есть (или должен быть) предел. От некоторых творческих решений у меня буквально отвисала челюсть, а в сочетании с текстами так вообще приводила в состояние какого-то головокружения, когда я по несколько раз задавался вопросом: "что за пиздец я сейчас слушаю?" Инструментал ситуацию по большей части не спасает - чаще всего мотивы затягиваются на слишком долго, но хотя бы умудряются не звучать скучно или однообразно, просто после 7-8 минут начинает закрадываться некая усталость, ОСОБЕННО с такими текстами. Короче говоря это очень странный альбом, который я вряд ли буду переслушивать в будущем. Да, на этом релизе есть пара хороших песен, но в основном картина такая - принц хочет ебаться the album. И лично меня такая структура не очень привлекает. Но хотя бы я точно знаю, что у нашего любимого похотливого исполнителя есть творчество гораздо более уважаемое и действительно остроумное. I was dreaming when I wrote this, forgive me if it goes astray...... I know I'm suppose to rate THIS album, but once I saw Prince, I felt like I needed to address the impact this man and his music has had on my life from the the very first time I heard him sing. Prince Rogers Nelson. June 7th, 1958. Gemini. The greatest musical talent. Period. Growing up in the middle of Indiana, I had never heard of Prince until a friend's brother was listening to Controversy. It may have been Private Joy. It may have been Let's Work. Whatever I was hearing, I loved it and I had to find out, who was this Prince guy? It didn't take me long to find out and immediately changed the way I listen music, even the way I lived my life. Somehow, listening to Prince, I went from a shy Indiana boy to a confident Michigan teenager, mainly plagiarizing Prince's lyrics. The girls never stood a chance. This is the person responsible for igniting my passion for music, all music and that passion still burns as bright, if not brighter to this day. Music is my religion. I have songs that remind me of the good times, I have songs that remind me of some bad times. Music will make me laugh. Music will make me cry. Prince is the man responsible for making me dig in deep and letting music reach you in way no words can describe. He is simply the best! On to the album. First, you're a little late to the Prince world, if this is your first album. To prep for this album, I went back and binged on his first 4 albums. If you thought 1999 was a sexualized album and you enjoyed it, then Dirty Mind is an album I highly recommend. First 3 songs, 1999, Little Red Corvette and Delirious, all very good tunes. But all 3 are your get on the radio kind of songs. If you knew Prince's music before this, you started to think maybe he went a little commercial, a little soft. Again, not because they are bad songs, but wasn't the Prince I was introduced to..... Then we get to Let's pretend we're married. "Marsha, I'm not saying this just to be nasty, but I sincerely want to phuck the taste out of your mouth." Profound, beautiful and yet heartfelt at the same time. Who can get away with this line? Prince and maybe Sienko, but that's it! DMSR - When this album came out, how many of you ended up in your underwear after hearing this song? BTW, the album was released 10/27/82, 2 days after my wife turned 16! So, yeah, we were rocking this album in High School, 40 years ago! And yep, that is he we ann arbor folks rolled back in the day. Some great words of wisdom in this song too. "Girl it aint no use, may as well get loose and work your body like a whore. However, in another part of the song, he states Policeman got no gun, you don't have to run. This has not aged well and you may want to run. One of my favorites off this album. My favorite on the album is Automatic. Ironic in the sense, not one of his well known songs. Like Weezer's Automatic. One of my favorites by Weezer too! So many great lyrics in this song. "Is it strange I feel more comfortable around you naked?" Around the 4 minute mark, he goes off on a little solo rant of statements and questions. After more music, a few minutes later, the girl responds to his statements/questions. Pure genius. Phugging awesome and my favorite part of the song. Love where he states I'm addicted to your pleasure, I'm addicted to your pain. But my favorite line - "they say nothing is perfect, but they don't know you." Good gawd, I think of Mindy!! Something in the water - May be my 2nd favorite off this album. One of those songs I can't explain, but just does something for me. Makes me think of Why you wanna treat me so bad. Free is just a beautiful song that really shows his voice range. I mean to hit those high notes only to dig deep and hit the baritone stuff is incredible. Lady Cab Driver - so many great lines in this song. I still will shout out "This is for Yosemite Sam all the tourist at Disneyland" whenever the moment seems right. Also loved, "This is for the women, so beautifully complex." Amen, brother. Back in the day, it was suppose to sound like he's getting some chick off, 40 years later, somewhat cringeworthy. Doesn't sound like she was having fun and he sounded a bit angry. Great tune still. All The Critics Love you. You thought it sounded silly at first. Then you found yourself grooving right along. He states, "On the 4th day of November, we need a purple high." I propose we all get a purple high on 4/21 each year to celebrate his passing, by celebrating our love of his music. Hell, I'm going to start this year and make a new tradition for the Sienko garage. International Lover. Still use this line on my wife, place my lips over your mouth and kissa, kissa...... Pretty sure I can still sing this song word for word and hit all the notes. Serious. In conclusion, This IS Prince. This album is great. This brought me back to the teenager growing up in Arbor Arbor. This is Sienko. My life is better for knowing Prince. I love this guy. Always will......... 5

Despite my best efforts I can't seem to get Prince's music to leave much of an impression on me. I absolutely don't dislike him by any means but I just can never bring a Prince melody to mind. Maybe it's because I listened closer and with more intention, but I'm glad to say that this time was different. While it still didn't blow me away, I still had a great time listening. I didn't realize how explicit Prince got. He always struck me as more of an innuendo type of guy, but apparently not. All-in-all I don't mind this and I have full intention of listening again. 4

3 And in comes a Prince album, which I imagine will probably be one of the quickest 5s my Dad gives out, and his third overall. I know this is one of his all-time favorites, and while it provides me with wonderful memories of home and my childhood, for me it’s no Purple Rain. Comparatively, this one has a bit too much of an 80s pop-driven sound for my taste, and it just feels a little safer and less experimental than his later work. The title track is enjoyable, but honestly, if not for the vocals, it sounds like it could be a Michael Jackson song. From there, Little Red Corvette is a fantastic tune, though I've always thought the production feels a little off on it. Like, it almost sounds like the audio is compressed? Not sure what happened there, but it’s kind of a shame since the song is so great otherwise. I didn’t recognize much of the album beyond that (even though I’m sure it was probably on in the background numerous times throughout my youth), but I found it pretty hit or miss. Delirious in particular I found a bit annoying musically, but then Let’s Pretend We’re Married was a fun return to form with a great beat to it. From there, it’s a lot of the over-sexualized funk and dance pop that Prince is known for, but they’re mostly all composed creatively enough that you don’t notice the majority are 6+ minutes long. Fun vibes all around, but I don’t think it’s the most diverse offering of Prince’s output - his best was yet to come. Still, it makes me think of my Dad, so I couldn't go any lower than a 3.

I thought I was going to love this based on how fun/interesting/sexy/impressive I've found other Prince records. I found most of the album enjoyable - 1999, Little Red Corvette, Let's Pretend We're Married, DMSR. But I found the squeaky synths of Delirious & Automatic distractingly grating. A lot of the lyrics are silly, and it definitely sounds *80's* in a way that not all Prince's music does (the DMSR groove would totally suit an 80s rap flow, but the guitar riff is v. timelessly Prince, e.g.) Definitely a fun one, but not necessarily the Prince album I'd pick to introduce someone to Prince.

One generation had Bob Dylan, this generation had Prince Rogers Nelson. 5 stars ALL DAY LONG.

Anar att det är en funky dansplatta men är inte särskilt njutbar att lyssna på. Free är sjukt bra, känns som den Prince jag hade bilden av.

My second Prince album reviewed. This record had a lot more familiar song on it than the first one I listened to (Sign 'O' the Times). This is the first album he recorded with his backing band, the Revolution. This album is sexually charged as hell! I feel like I've been ear fucked by Prince, and I'm ok with it! I could do without the 2 minute porno clips in the songs Automatic, and Lady Cab Driver, but we will chock that up to artistic expression. The Revolution were tight on this album, taking Prince's pop rock to another level! There are strong dance vibes on this, and also touches of R&B, and funk. The song Free is a great nod to the world issues surrounding people who are horribly oppressed by their governments, and preaches a message of peace and love. Overall, I really enjoyed this album! A lot of great songs on this one, and great beats throughout! Will definately listen again! Favourite songs: Little Red Corvette, D.M.S.R. 1999, Let's Pretend We're Married Least favourite songs: Delirious, Something in the Water (Does Not Compute) 4/5

Not quite Purple Rain, much better than Graffiti Bridge.

Toes the line between being superb and ridiculous. I've seen the man live, he was amazing - but the longeurs of his recorded output can sometimes be a bit wearing. Still, side one of the original album - '1999', 'Little Red Corvette' and 'Delirious' - is a bit special

Color me disappointed. Have always enjoyed the first two tracks, but it was all downhill after that and the hill was steep, long, and rocky. “Automatic” felt like the longest song of all time, and while I’m down with the occasional song that is just unabashedly horny (see: “2 Become 1” by Spice Girls), there are some moments in the back half of this record that made me want to just tell His Purpleness to get a room already. Say what you will about “Darling Nikki,” but at least you can hum it if you don’t like the lyrical content. Not the case here. I mistakenly thought this album came out after Purple Rain. It makes so much more sense knowing that situation is reversed. The blueprint was established on this one, but perfected on the other, I suppose. Or maybe I should say the blue balls were established on this one. I dunno. Dude was herrrrny.

This album has several songs that made it into the mainstream, but the whole of it is another great effort from Prince. Oozing with the "Minnesota Funk" sound he helped pioneer and sexual undertones, this album does hold a special place in his catalog.

One of the most over rated artists, in my opinion.

So, Prince's breakthrough? It is fabulous and Little Red Corvette is one of the greatest singles of all time, just not quite consistent across the album to be perfect.

Åpner jo knallsterk med 2 av verdens beste poplåter. Delirious er jo ren galskap.. Men helvete for et synth-kaos! Må digges? og den baby-greien på slutten er noe funky.. Slutten av "Lets pretend were married" er perfekt til å leke med loops på slutten av sangen. "D.M.S.R" varer rett og slett for lenge.. "Free" er et friskt pust i albumet. Men joda.. et veldig bra pop-album til sin tid. Blir litt mye "riffing" og skriking fra sjæfæn i hæler.

Det är en sexig musik. Jag får inte känslan av att Prince var en sådan som ogillade att uttrycka sig i det avseendet. Inledandet är med titelspåret "1999", vilket är en känd låt som jag hört förut och precis som mitt föregående album "Music for the Masses" är det ett mycket starkt sätt att inleda ett album. Däremot är det inte samma euforiska känsla jag får i kroppen när jag hör det. Visst är det bra, men det är något som förhindrar det från att vara SVINbra. Jag kan inte helt sätta fingret på vad det är men jag tror att det har med någon typ av obehagskänsla att göra. Jag känner mig aldrig riktigt trygg under någon del av denna timme. Det är verkligen inte så att jag sitter och mår dåligt, förutom i en av låtarna där magen faktiskt vrider sig lite. Det är under låten "Lady Cab Driver" där det efter en stund kommer in en kvinnlig karaktär som stönar och njuter för FULLA MUGGAR. Jag vet inte vad det säger om mig att jag får någon typ av kalldusch p.g.a. det. Men det var bara något otroligt märkligt att det presenterades på det sättet i det här forumet. Jag var inte riktigt beredd men i efterhand känns det som att jag borde ha varit det. Ändå överlag ett bra album, han var ju bra den där Prinsen. Att skapa en stämning genom musik visste han precis hur han skulle göra, det är något som är säkert. Ibland obehagligt, ibland mycket trivsamt men alltid imponerande. Bäst: "1999" är mycket fin, men jag tror jag gillade "Little Red Corvette" lite mer.

Perfect mix of pop, funk, and rock of the era. I’ve only listened to Prince’s hits and Purple Rain in full. This made me realize I need much more Prince in my life! 5/5

Classics are sometimes just really obvious. It doesn’t need explanation.

Came to Prince very late in my musical discovery. Really think if I had discovered him as a teenager he would have opened my eyes so wider. This album is sensuous, is over 40 years old and feels modern and very very funky.

I think that writing a song about an apocalyptic New Year’s Eve party at the end of the century is a cool idea, and if the song is catchy enough, you’ve got a mega-hit that will probably get repeat plays 18 years later. I like the way they switch up the vocalists early on (in 1999) though I have to admit, the slow bpms could never compete with stuff like the B52s when it came to dragging me onto the dancefloor. “Little Red Corvette”, the other hit, doesn’t do much for me, and its signature Linn LM-1 Drum beat pops up throughout album. I appreciate Prince’s brilliance, playing every instrument & writing every song, but the end result doesn’t appeal to me much.

I honestly don’t understand all the fuss over Prince. His hits here are pretty mediocre and dated sounding, especially the percussion. I wanted to give it 1 star but since I couldn’t make it all the way thru the album I’ll round it up in case I actually missed something of substance.

Prince at his funkiest

Pretty awesome. Love the funky guitars. Some of it is a little too sexual at times, but the synths and drum kits used prove to be influencial even to this day with the resurgence of 80s pop style. Prince was an icon for a reason.

This CD has such an amazing reputation, and it's fine, but just not for me. Partly it's that it's just such an enormous wheel of cheese - the heavy synth, machine-like drums and endlessly-repeating riffs just have not aged well. It sounds like dance music for dance styles that don't exist anymore, like cotillion. Like on something like the last 3 minutes of "Let's Pretend We're Married", it sounds like something is supposed to be happening, but then it doesn't - that's probably dancing. It's not actively unpleasant to listen to, but I wouldn't put it on again.

Ok did not love or hate it

There's a reason people only know the first two tracks. There are some great parts, but I'm really surprised how much this didn't move me. Am I too corp???? Wanna give it two stars, but it's Prince! Is this one of those albums I really need to listen to all the way more than once? Ended strong, so I'll give it three stars, mostly out of guilt.

I really want to like Prince and I'm happy he's enjoying himself being a megalomanic sex-dwarf on this record, but I just don't buy it. By turns it's too sentimental, too crude, too cheesy. I'll stick with the singles.

Early introduction to this: my sister had it on double vinyl in the mid-80s, with its inner sleeve images, one in full Band Picture Day regalia with the Revolution, the other a boudoir photo featuring The Artist in bed with watercolors, his cute butt (mostly) concealed by tastefully arranged satin sheets. Which is neither here nor there, other than that format suits this sprawling masterpiece, less focused and more self-indulgent (but in that fantastic Prince way he totally got away with) than the imminent pop missile of Purple Rain, not a song under four minutes, four songs over seven minutes, full power Prince on display: the unearthly range, wild shifts in voice and vibe, able to hold the cutting edge of new wave synthesizer pop then just jam in however much deeply authentic funk soul. Dirty as hell and funny to boot.

Exhilarating thrill ride from Prince, who fully embraces synths and drum machine creating a futuristic dance soundscape. Kinky as f, Prince goes places no other singer would dare.

Dear Prince, The first sign that the woman in “Little Red Corvette” was trouble is that she had a pocket full of Trojans, *some of them used* (emphasis mine). What kind of maniac does *that*? Probably should’ve just called the song “Giant Red Flag” instead.

Some decent tracks

One of the best albums in Prince's career very danceable and with a lot of catchy choirs and melodies.

A great big synthesized sexscape. 'International Lover' is hilarious and haunting—I think that's an impressive combination.

Not my favourite of Prince's albums. He evolved as he went along, and I regard the albums that followed better.

Awful production but the songs are classics, fantastic songwriting

This album was incredibly tedious at times. Some of these tracks certainly felt like butter over too much bread. Luckily, there were enough slices here, with tasty enough butter, to still keep it good.

Cocaine ruined a lot of albums by making songs that are 9 minutes long when they really should be 3-5. Other than that, a lot of good music here.

This is really good, but not as good as Purple Rain. It could maybe have been a bit shorter...

I didn't realise prince was THIS horny. It's fun but I can't see myself dancing to it unless the vibe was strong. Some vocals are a little grating. Got a soft spot for some of the bubbly synths and drums for sure, but this album is way too long to be 90% upbeat dance songs

Great all round. Good upbeat danciness etc. Great musicianship and mixes. Alot going on. Great guitar. Had I have listened with headphones my opinion may have changed.

This one isn't really clicking for me. It's a little cheesy and the tracks don't feel like they develop very much past the first verse/chorus cycle, despite a number of the songs being well over 5 minutes. I also feel like Prince's guitar work is missing. This is probably more enjoyable on the dance floor than in an office.

I have incredible respect for prince as an artist but I find this a bit too 80's pop for my tastes. Of course there are a few bangers, namely the title track. And I absolutely love the arrangements on the whole album, its dense and interesting and the range of instrumentation and samples are great. Similarly the production could be from 2022, not 1982 and you wouldn't bat an eye. I'm just not the biggest fan of how the whole package ends up coming together.

Prince double album when he was in his prime. What do we think? Some of the finest synths of the time. Starting with his third album, Dirty Mind, Prince had pioneered a subgenre of funk known as the Minneapolis Sound which was very similar to much of the synth-focused funk at the time, but included a much glossier production that would come to define the sound of 80's pop. That's right, my biggest musical gripe could be attributed to none other than Prince. The boring, plastic production of the 80's has ruined many a record for me, but the same could not be said about 1999. To call this album boring would be a sin. Lots of great stuff on the first LP. I think Prince had a complete vision of a sort of comedown on the second LP but 80's ballads will never do anything for me, even if they're from Prince. Free, in particular, is the most skippable song on here. Lady Cab Driver helps save the momentum for the latter half, but for a double album I can't help but feel that 1999 is a great album that gets watered down. I am also extra critical of double albums anyway, so I was going to be hard on 1999 anyway.

For me, Prince is best listened to in small doses; I like only a couple of songs (the usual suspects: Purple Rain, Kiss, ...). The title song and maybe Little Red Corvette fits the bill, and altogether I prefer this album to, say, Sign 'O' The Times, but it stays a mixed bag for me. 2.5/5

Classic album, as funky as you expect from Prince. I can enjoy it but I would not put it on myself.

Sexy and fun.

Hmmm, doesn't have the same epic highs as "Purple Rain", but on the other hand it feels a bit more consistent. Fave track - "1999" is iconic. "Something in the Water (Does Not Compute)" was great. "International Lover" is lols.

I thought it was starting to drag then I hit the funktastic All The Critics. Only the purple one can get away with that stripped down repetitive groove. If you can get an over 60 white man dancing you must have something. But I think International Lover is my new favourite song. I smiled, then giggled, then bellowed with laughter. He is that naughty little boy who keeps getting away with it. So much fun. I decided to re-listen because I needed to decide if this was worth four or five stars. That bass on Lady Cab Driver, perfect mix of '70s and '80s funk. Then it gets into that rocky little jam that becomes a full on shred. Oh yeah!

A storming opening to the album with 1999 (the track) and Little Red Corvette. Prince is a master of both songwriting and instrumental proficiency. The album tailed off a bit towards the end but on the whole, it felt like a joyous party.

Prince feels like he's in 99 on this one. Decades above and beyond his competition. Funky as fuck and fun. There is a reason Prince is goated. The mfer just says all the ny critics just love him. Ballsy as a new artist. But like draining threes against Charley Murphy this is a swish

An excellent collection of 11 fun dance hits that blend disco, funk, pop, rock, and synths really well. We start off with two of his famous songs, setting the mood for the rest of the album. They're catchy full of interesting instrumentation and hooks. The whole album is energetic, with an enthusiastic performance by Prince and his screeching guitar. Out of 11 songs, the only dud was "Free", and not just because of its lyrical subject matter. The major weakness is that most of the tracks are too long, especially since the tracks tend not to justify their lengths well. In fact, some try to incorporate annoying skits that I don't care for, but at least they don't disrupt the music much. On the bright side, they're long enough to put in a party mix. Favorites: 1999, Little Red Corvette, Lady Cab Driver, International Lover

Was hoping once getting past the title track my eyes would be opened to a side of him I'd been missing, but it didn't happen. I'm sure I'm wrong and will one day see the light. The pop hits are unimpeachable, his choppy rhythm guitar is fantastic there’s def some filler (Delirious is awful) and Lady Cab Driver may be my fave track. Incredible how much that sounds like a live funk jam given he played all the instruments on that track (and pretty much all on the album) himself

To think this was made 40 years ago - still sounds so fresh, super funky. Dare I say it, there are a couple of (what feel like) filler tracks, so I don't think it's his best album. Would give it 4.5/5 if I could ...

Easily the album I’ve enjoyed the most in this project. It was nearly all killer and even the bits I thought were filler on the 1st listen might grow on me on the 2nd, 3rd, 4th listen. Having never listened to Prince before, consider me a fan.

Two great songs and then rest sounds too dated and inconsistent. 2.5 rounded up to 3

People of a certain age might remember those keyboards that, in addition to the usual 88 keys, had a dizzying array of buttons on the giant panel above the keyboard itself. Whenever I sat down to practice, I would end up just pissing about with all the buttons, instead of actually playing the sodding thing. Every conceivable sound was there (3 options for a timpani!), along with a range of different rhythms and beats, and a feature called 'Automatic' that just spat out something pre-recorded. And it all sounded absolutely dreadful. Which is why I don't get how such an acclaimed record can sound, for way too much of it, like someone playing around with one of those keyboards in an effort to find the tinniest synth sound, before bashing away with reckless abandon. Even the famous tracks were quite grating in that respect. And then, out of nowhere, some actual songs: Lady Cab Driver and International Lover are great. As for the rest of it, I'll have to take people's word for it that it's as much of an accomplishment as it's said to be.

Prince is amazing isn’t he

This has great performances and composition. The branching into a variety of styles and the way Prince makes each song fun and unique give this album a claim to greatness. I wonder about the lengths of some of the songs which can go into the 8 to 10 minute range. At times that seems really cool because of the explorations and funky grooves. But at others you sort of wonder if it was necessary. All in all a one-of-a-kind effort from one of the all time great recording artists.

The good parts were incredible but some of the songs are just too much. Trim some of the songs down and it’s probably 5 stars.

This is such a great album. The songs are playful, sexy, funky, danceable, and just so much fun to listen to. I don't think I fully appreciated this music back in 1982. In my defense, I was 11 years old and into, I don't know, Duran Duran or something. Listening to him now though, I can see how Prince is really a once in a lifetime talent. This is a pretty epic album and it's clear how it broke Prince out into stardom. It was probably a bit much for me at the time, as a young teen, but I definitely appreciate and admire it more now.

Whoa! Don't know that I've ever listened to this whole album. I couldn't really connect to Prince when this was new. But grown up me thinks this holds up very well indeed. Superb!

PRINCE! As I listened, I wasn't entirely sure I've heard this entire album before... I was definitely familiar with the first half of the album. The second half less so... Great album... what's not to love about the first half? As for the second half, I'll probably need a few more listens to fully connect but no matter, that first half makes this album a solid 5!

A lot better than I thought I am more of a fan than before!

Ahem, yes indeed. Listening to a Prince album like this is never a boring experience. It's got some damn funky grooves that probably need to be heard on the dancefloor in a sweaty night club at high volume to be fully appreciated. At home, at a moderate volume, it's still very listenable pop music. I'm liking 80's music a lot more now than I did years ago. And I wonder how many people heard the song '1999' during the millennium new years eve celebrations?

Probably a great album, I'm just not that into Prince. It all feels like a mid 80s party.

Dance. Music. Sex. Romance. Starts of with much passion, then lags a bit, losing interest, then thrusts up the rhythm and pace again, we're back in the game, then reaching an elephant sounding climax, we're left feeling a little deflated towards the end... Yes, we've definitely just had sex with Prince!

I remember seeing the video for 1999 back in the day, and it was so obvious that there is something different about Prince. I am familiar with the first three tracks from this album, but the rest was new music to me. "1999" and "Little Red Corvette" are okay. "Delirious" sounds so 80s, with electronic sounding drums, and keyboards. The rest of the album I would skip. The music doesn't draw me in, and I don't want to hear what Prince is singing about.

Despite the length of the album and most of the songs, 1999 was an intriguing listen throughout. Liked half a lot and the rest were decent. The music was a bit quirky and not as bold nor engaging as Purple Rain. Still an essential listen.

The first half of this album is incredible. Funky but understated guitar over 80s synths and a drum machine the drive the songs on. The songwriting on sides 1 & 2 is also brilliant. Six, seven & eight minute long tracks fly by without coming close to getting boring. The quality of the tunes drops off a bit on sides 3 & 4, but the style remains consistent. I never realised 1999 was a protest song against nuclear weapons, which adds an extra level of interest and appreciation. Some of the other lyrics pure filth. Great listen, some really classic stuff here. An iconic Prince album. The thing that knocks it down for me is, I don't know, I just can't quite fully get on the Prince train - I wouldn't listen to this just because I wanted to. Certainly enjoyed it though.

As you know, I'm a big Prince fan, and I like his albums previous to this, but "1999" is his first 5 star masterpiece in my opinion. It's where The Revolution really gelled and he perfected his signature Kinn Drum sound that I love so much. It's a double album so a bit self indulgent in places, but that's part of Prince's appeal in a way. He needed to have this manic, no holds barred brainstorm session so he could really explore and push boundaries to get to the point where he could refine that energy on his piece de resistance: Purple Rain.

The title track and Little Red Corvette are both fantastic but nothing else really jumped out at me. This was quite anticlimactic to listen to after Sign o' the Times, which felt a lot more consistent despite being 10ish minutes longer This album really suffers from having quite a few songs that last far longer than they should, and just doesn't have strong enough songs to stick out after the iconic one-two openers

Bussin: 1999 and LRC are obv. classics. Delirious is much fun too. Sussin: Automatic was repetitive and boring...it's almost 10 mins long. Something in the water lyrics are fine, but the "music" is trash. Lady Cab Driver is smut with bizarre lyrics and a woman faking an orgasm in the background the entire time. It's awful. Vibe: Despite a few missteps, there a lot of fun interesting stuff to love on here. Why don't you purify yourself in the waters of Lake Minnetonka?

I’m of the opinion there are no bad Prince albums, but this one certainly isn’t my favourite. It’s starts out strong but becomes a little ho-hum (for Prince) midway through.

great album, very sexy, love the cover art and really want to get more into Prince if you know what i mean.

I really enjoyed this album because although it got repetitive after each song I continued to find myself dancing along and eventually singing along and I just loved the vibes.

First of all - the best songs here are legit great pop, rock, dance, whatever you want to call it: "1999" and "Little Red Corvette" - those 2 songs, what a start to the album. But the rest is a bit....dated? Aside from the voice (which I'll get to), for the most part the instrumentation, sounds, drum machines, synths just doesn't distinguish itself from a lot from this era. e.g. "Delirious" I hadn't heard in decades. and it sounds it... Too many long songs that sadly don't delve into 7/4 and long passages about rainbows or planets. Seriously: 8 minutes of a rather repetitive dance beat makes me lose interest. (also: "Automatic" is just messed up - listening to the crying while I had headphones on and lying down was creepy as hell and not in any sort of fun way.) Finishing with a positive tho: Prince's voice is the real star - he commands confidence in these songs. I feel like I write this in half of my reviews: I don't focus much at all on either vocals or lyrics except when they're distracting/bad. It's rare that I'll boost an album in my mind for this but I think this qualifies. I do wish there was a touch more of his guitar playing. 5/10 2 stars - the music overall is meh but vocals/swagger bring it up...but I can't bring myself to give it more than 2.

This album is a lot of fun. The super hits are all at the beginning of the album; however that is does not mean that the other songs are pushovers. It is a great album. This is the third Prince album on the list. I would say that it is behind Purple Rain and Sign O the Times. I will listen to the album again.

Really long songs, very repetitive. The first 15 mins was great, but then it REALLY starts to drag on.

Never was a Prince fan. My loss. At its worst this is a fun creative mess. At its best it’s magical. Strange, unique and mostly mesmerizing.

I found most of these songs a bit vague and boring. To be honest, some of the songs at the beginning I would've liked a lot more if they didn't sound like Prince kept the microphone a meter away from him and if the general mixing had been better. Also all songs on this album could've been cut in half as they just keep repeating the same minute over and over for 6 minutes each.

Whew, what a party! This got... real weird there for a bit, but overall this album contains some absolute bangers. Favourites: the first 4 songs, more or less in that order.

I expected a little more innovation considering his calibre, but I do respect him finding himself in this decade with all the pop and hip hop competition from the time. I do wish he incorporated more of his virtuoso guitar playing into his songwriting though, since he was one of the best guitarists ever.

Album started strong with the first three songs but afterwards fell off. The songs seemed artificially stretched by so la la instrumentals and lots of talking/whispering and overall quality went down

An enjoyable album that is upbeat, unique, and funky. Prince shows his ability to be a genius in this album. He also shows side for carrying things on that could’ve used some editing or cutting. The back half of this album drags a bit and the sex them of a few songs seemed unnecessary. Would still listen again and feel it’s about as good as sign o the times. 7.5/10

Fuck yeah, finally! Finally I’m graced with an album from The Purple One, Prince! I mean, c'mon people, this album opens with 3 of Prince's best, most danceable and memorable songs. One minute it's defiant "we're here for a good time" philosophizing, the next its manic desperate horniness boiling over. This album was a seismic shift in the rules of male pop superstardom and a glorious precursor of what was still yet to come from this formidably talented man. Prince has a rapidly sliding scale of moods and energies that take the listener on one hell of a ride. From tenderly suggestive to outright sexual vulgarity, Prince does whatever the fuck he wants, says whatever the fuck he wants, and fucks however the fuck he wants. And the music is always superbly fitting his attitude du jour. Nobody flies their freak flag higher than Prince and it is a spectacle to behold. Utterly unforgettable.

Dated, but good

This is the first time I've ever listened to Prince and I think I may have heard a song by him here and there. Otherwise I just knew about him through popular culture. I liked it... but it's also too damn long. In recent days I've gotten so many albums that are great but just have too much filler. Easily could have cut down quite a bit from this album and achieve the same. Nonetheless it's quite fun and funky.

Pränz! Auch als sein bekennender Verehrer muss ich zugeben, dass sich bei ihm neben sehr viel Licht auch recht viel Schatten findet. Ich kannte das Album bis auf 1999 und Little Red Corvette nicht und halte 1999 nach wie vor für eine seiner schwächeren Singles. Free ist eine Entdeckung, der Rest ist eher durchwachsen.

That was an experience. All over the place lyrically and musically. Feels experimental in some spots and highly polished in others. I'd never been exposed to anything beyond his radio stuff, so this was extremely cool.
