Reviews (page 3 of 8)
Simon Reynolds had categorized Spiritualized's Lazer Guided Melodies as 21st Century gospel and I am inclined to agree with him. Jason Pierce's space psych rock entity places itself amongst the spiritually inclined groups that ran up that hill; the difference being Spiritualized's penchant for genuine emotion seeping through and becoming the backbone of their sound, as experienced here. If more melodies can be as lazer guided as this, then we'd be better off as a species. Favorites: You Know It's True, I Want You, Run, Step Into the Breeze, Symphony Space, Take Your Time, Shine a Light, Sway, 200 Bars.
7/10 - there were some pretty interesting tracks. A lot of repetitive stuff and only some of it worked for me.
Cool spacey rock record. Having heard this after listening to "Ladies and gentlemen..." gives me a great view of where Spiritualized started and where it went.
cool album, spacey and atmospheric vibes. kinda reminded me of radiohead and even U2 at points. nice to have a unique genre (space rock) represented on this list! the individual songs here seemed less important than the album as a whole, but i found it enjoyable. also i didn't test any of the cool CD shenanigans that Wikipedia mentioned but am always a big fan of artists that do cool things with what would otherwise be limitations of physical media. favorites: you know it's true, if i were with her now, i want you, run, shine a light
Man I love the sound of Spiritualized. Shoegazy space rock all the way, and crazy that the debut is from 1992! Though not quite as coherent as Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space, and perhaps dragging out some songs a bit too much, Lazer Guided Melodies is a super strong fully-fledged out debut album.
I liked this a lot more than I thought I would. Based on the album art I was expecting some long electronic slog (no offense) but it wasn't that at all! I think next time I'd like to listen to this in one sitting to make sure I actually like it.
Spacey and gorgeous. Spiritualized albums exist in their own galaxy, orbiting a lonely planet inhabited by disembodied creatures longing to make physical what exists in the aural realm of these tracks.
Back in 1992, I remember running home with this CD, eager to play what I assumed would be some sort of continuation of the Spacemen 3 legacy. I was bitterly disappointed, to the point where I only played the album through a couple of times before putting it into a pile to never be played again. When I saw this come up today, I remembered those bad memories of being let down, so was a little salty about having to listen to this again. For the first few tracks it was as I remembered, like someone had turned up the dial to 11 on the parts of Spacemen 3 I didn't like, while suppressing the parts I did like. I've always been an "OD Catastrophe" enjoyer and a "Walking With Jesus" despiser. However, by the end, I was finding this far more enjoyable than I had expected. I would still have preferred something with more of a psych/ garage sound, and less floaty/ dreamy/ gospel sound. I still think Sonic Boom is necessary to counterpoint Jason's sound. But I did enjoy it, particularly the second half.
4/5. I love psychedelic gospel. I was already in love with Ladies and Gentleman and didn't realize there were more of equal quality. Airiness and cool chills is what comes from this music. The songs last a little longer here, especially near the second half of the album. It can take away from some investment but I still think it creates the correct aesthetic they are going for and I am all here for it. Don't think it's a classic, since I did lose focus a few times but with a few more listens it could be. Best Song: Run, If I Were With Her Now, Shine A Light
Ooh, I wasn't expecting this! I was kind of expecting it to be ... we'll, I'm not sure really...but not this. A very pleasant ambient sound that you can either focus on and appreciate, or have it as background music whilst you concentrate on other things. I listened to this during a rare office base admin day, and so this was perfect for me. Not 'brilliant' but I'll definitely keep it for future listening again. THIS. IS. WHY. I. LOVE. THIS. APP !!!
Pretty goos]d for a debut, but probably not the best Spiritualized album.
Starts off slow but I started to really dig it.
Good
Excellent but they didn’t really evolve much after that
Some of the negative reviews for this album, sheesh. Go jerk off to picture of Bob Dylan or something and let go a little. 5 stars to balance out the negative nancys
Can't describe it other than chilled indie. Really enjoyed it though
this is pretty great
Cool
I enjoy this band and had not heard this album. Definitely spacey, shoe gazey and beautiful. If you like Beach House, dad rock, and mbv its like a nice combo of them. As an album, I prefer some of their others particularly since the second half has most of the tracks over 5 minutes. I got a little zoned out by them but mostly because it's really trancey arrangements. Fav tracks: You Know it's True, Run, Smiles, Step into the Breeze, Shine a Light, Angel Sigh and Sway.
I great album for when you're in the mood for Brian Eno, but want a bit more indie rock mixed in too. This is shoegaze without the extreme melancholy, or rock to listen to while you're floating in space (appropriately enough, that would be the title of a later album). Sit back, close your eyes and let it wash over you. When you wake, you'll feel refreshed but remember only bits and pieces of what you just heard. If none of that appeals to you, then this album isn't for you.
One of my favorite surprises of this experience. Maybe it just caught me on a good day, but I listened to it twice and really enjoyed it.
Very sleepy, ambient background music. I feel like this music works on a higher level if you analyze each nuance and draw out the meaning behind, like a poem. For me, I listen to this kind of music in the background at work as something I don't have to pay much attention to. Just pleasant background. I hear the influence of this music in bands I like such as If These Trees Could Talk and God is an Astronaut. A genre I like but usually not something I reach for. I want something that is more approachable and immediately powerful for me.
Really good. Not what I thought it would be. Love the bari sax , if that's what it is in a couple songs. The last song is no.
Moody and chill as fuck
genuinely cant decide what to give this album Hearing the bass come in during Take Your Time for the first time was an insane feeling, and having Shine a Light right after that was cathartic and really powerful but the rest of the album just makes me zone out so much I cant remember a second of it despite listening to the whole thing like 3-4 times Idk, 4 just cus I liked those two mentioned songs that much
Yuh, spacy and groovy, sometimes more so than it needed to be.
200 Bars
This album has been accused as being self indulgent by some, maybe it is but overall its very enjoyable. I can imagine some of the pieces being used as a musical backdrop to a cool art installation. Floaty ethereal objects gently suspended in the air, metamorpising. That's the effect it had on me whilst listening. Relaxing and chilled out. 👍
Another epic drug trip from The Spiritualized. I lost all sense of track and time and felt like I was a fictional druggie at the center of a movie staring into a mirror pondering my life choices. And I mean this in a good way. Don't take drugs. You just have to listen to this.
This was an interesting one. I found some of these moments transcendent. Others I felt like there could have been more drum presence to up the stakes as the song went on. Regardless, this album definitely got my attention and was a strong shoegaze presence. 3.7/5 -> 4/5
This was a cool ambience album to just leave on in the background and groove. Excellent quality, but very low-key and unobtrusive. Four stars.
3.5
Electro ethereal soundscapes. I liked this album very much.
I don't think album will convert anyone to this genre of music, but I enjoy this type of meandering, go nowhere space rock. I'll revisit this album again.
The album was just a bit too long, but I really enjoyed it. The flow, the melodies - it was the gentle start to my morning and work day that I needed. I think you have to be in the right mood to like this kind of album. It feels like you're floating in space.
Really liked!
Listened to this while playing Calico solo. I won! I really enjoyed this album. I was a big fan of Brightblack Morning Light back in the day, and I can absolutely hear the influence this album had on their sound. Listening to this brought me back to the lazy hot stony days at Burning Man. This album would be perfect for hanging out in the shade while nursing a hangover.
Interesting rockish album
Very relaxing. Easy to listen to while working
Vast outer soundscapes Stretching to infinities Brings a spacey bliss
Very soothing and soft sounds.
I probably won’t listen to this ever again but it worked weirdly well for running. I really need something I can lose myself in/drift off to so I can forget what I’m actually doing. Context is important I guess
Spacey, enveloping atmosphere. Might like this one more than Ladies And Gentlemen for that aspect
Really, really enjoyable - when you're in the right mood. If you're not in the mood, this album will put you in the right mood.... :) Ok, I like it.
Certainly! Here's an improved version of your review for the album "Lazer Guided Melodies" by Spiritualized: --- **Review of "Lazer Guided Melodies" by Spiritualized** "Lazer Guided Melodies" is an intriguing album that treads a fine line between Britpop sensibilities and cosmic exploration. While it doesn't quite reach the celestial heights of "Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space," it still manages to carve out its own distinct space. The album's sonic landscape oscillates between dreamy, ethereal passages and moments of gritty guitar-driven energy. Tracks like "Shine a Light" and "Run" showcase Spiritualized's ability to create hypnotic soundscapes that linger in the mind long after the music stops. However, it's impossible to ignore the shadow cast by the monumental "Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space." The latter remains a masterpiece, and "Lazer Guided Melodies" occasionally feels like it's standing in its predecessor's shadow. Yet, if we set aside direct comparisons, this album reveals its own merits. The personal preference factor comes into play here. While "Lazer Guided Melodies" may not dominate my playlist as frequently as "Ladies and Gentlemen," it still finds its way into rotation. Its quieter moments, such as "Symphony Space," evoke a sense of introspection, while the more upbeat tracks inject vitality into the overall experience. In summary, "Lazer Guided Melodies" deserves recognition for its unique blend of Britpop influences and cosmic aspirations. It may not soar as high as its predecessor, but it remains a captivating journey through space and sound. I’m a fan. This is not something to listen to whenever but for the right occasion the vibes are immaculate. I prefer Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space but mostly just for that one song. Light 4.
Nice
Lovely listen I look forward to returning to.
Heard this one before- not the most revolutionary or original but I've always been a sucka for ambient chill music. It's pleasant and relaxing sounds.
This was a pleasant surprise, I enjoyed this a lot. It's one of those where I think the whole is better than the sum of the parts. Only a few songs really stood out, but the whole thing just had a really nice vibe to it. I don't know if it's dream pop or shoegaze or whatever genre the internet says it is, but it's got a really nice sound. It's very layered and textural, a wall of sound that somehow never is overwhelming. It sounds ahead of its time to me too, I probably would have guessed 2000s. It's a bit front-heavy and some of the songs drag on a bit, but no major complaints, this was really nice. Favorite song: You Know It's True Other: If I Were With Her Now, I Want You, Run, Shine a Light 3/12/24
I had never heard of this band and I enjoyed this album. I would have shit myself if I discovered this band in first year university.
Really like the peaceful/ethereal sound.
I mean, Spiritualized is incredible. They very much have their own thing going and it is so big and beautiful and spacey and strange. I love it. I don't know that I think this is their best record but I do love it.
I really liked this, could be good airplane music.
i never understood the appeal of spiritualized or spacemen 3 when i was in high school. im 29, having now tripped a handful of times i TOTALLY get it now. cover art is so sick also
Good psychedelic EDM.
Interessante. Gli si può concedere un secondo ascolto
I actually really liked this. Very melancholy but interesting.
Cowboy Junkies are rehearsing but their female singer doesn't show up, so they decide to go hang with Jesus and Mary Chain but get waylaid by Luna. Probably as good as the best of these, maybe better. Still, a little too much fade, though the first few songs got off to a good start.
vibes
Once in college, a friend and I went to her friend’s house to drink and smoke weed and do the usual college kid things. We maybe played Jenga and definitely beer pong where someone won with a 360 no look shot. One of the guys was very very high and asked for some chill out music. My friend and I ribbed him by putting on other, more interesting music. I put on the sprawling psychedelic “Hey Jane” by Spiritualized from their 2012 album Sweet Heart Sweet Light. I bet he wished I put on Lazer Guided Melodies instead.
Turns out I like shoegaze (dream pop?). Spiritualized is starting to grow on me.
Calm. Good music to mellow out to.
Setting a template for later bands, whilst shamelessly mining earlier glories; still a great listen though.
Musiikki soitanta.... fits the day... thats how it be....
Enjoyed that.
Love me some space rock. Sway!
I’ve really enjoyed both spiritualized albums from this list. An album I’d have listened to a lot if it had arrived with me at the time.
I've never heard of this artist or album before, but I really enjoyed this album. The arrangements were fantastic, and they had a really unique dream-like feel. I'm not super familiar with the shoegaze genre, but this album had a different feel than the few shoegaze albums that I'm familiar with. The guitar playing did most of the heavy lifting on this album, but the overall sound was great. I'll definitely revisit this album some day, because it would be something great to have on while I work out or while I'm at work.
It's not my style but I enjoyed it, it felt a bit different and like I need to try and explore the genre more.
Weird but really got in the zone working to this. Even noticed I was mimicking some of the sounds. Overall I liked it
Better than expected. Very Stone Roses, Jesus and Mary Chain, Velvet Underground, Sigur Ros. Smooth production. Not too loud or too much. Nice balance. Not too pop, not too avant garde. Kinda peaceful.
The last quarter of Lazer Guided Melodies is notably weaker, but the record entire never stops moving. It's immersive, but not into one conceit, and keeps the fleshiness of human voices in the media.
Had only heard their “Ladies and gentlemen, we are floating in space”. I liked this one more. Like a chiller Radiohead. Lots of reverb and echo.
it got dull for the last ≈ 20 minutes but still a solid album. no songs that i “liked” on spotify but i would say that i liked the album on the whole. a low 4
One likes to think of Spiritualized as Oasis' smarter, more reflective and less douche-y brothers. The dreaminess is the power, which builds slowly, through the layering and echoes and resonances, and only comes across fully on several listens. Floating through Space is the stronger record, straight-up, though one feels glad and grateful to be reminded how much one used to like this band. .
Some nice atmospheric rock. I really enjoyed while listening to it, but absolutely nothing stuck with me once I was done.
brilliant. perhaps the best space rock album ive heard, better even than we're floating in space. loved it
good
God ambient, nice.
Squishy
Good
Really enjoyed that. Nice bit of Dreamwave/shoegaze. Perfect to zone out and work to.
Gotta say this is quite enjoyable
8/10 A lullabye for death. This is one long reverbed-flanged-tremolo-ed out sigh. The singing barely rises beyond a mutter, the guitars strum on a couple of chords (usually fifths) and gentle sounds wash in and out. He took Velvet Underground songs and took them in an even dronier direction. There isn't the frisson of john cale's screeching viola or the building tension of guitars. There are peaks but they get there languidly and never get too clamorous. This is an album of resignation and oblivion. It feels rather lovely.
Stellar blend of psychedelic, ambient and soaring rock in the vein of U2. ("I Want You" in particular sounds like something off of "The Joshua Tree.") I like how positive the music is. There's a joyful feeling in these songs. This would be a great album for a road trip. The songs take their time and build. I was into this one.
a strong debut
ersten 3 Lieder hatten alle etwas was mir gefallen hat, bis jetzt ganz gut
First one on the list I hadn't heard of. Pretty dope. Reminds me of the Kentucky Route Zero soundtrack.
Lazer guided for your ear holes.
Pretty mellow overall, but I could listen to it every now and then
Background music, very loopy and repetitive, pleasant enough but not massively engaging.
Cool, laid punk melodic synthy.
Cracking album. Not as good as Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space, but certainly sets the direction that Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space went in. Hurrah.
I was not excited to see this album today, since I really did not enjoy the other Spiritualized album that I got on this list. However, this album proceeds a little more in the vein of the work that Spacemen 3 was doing prior to the breakup of that band. I liked Spacemen 3 a lot more, and I like this as well. I haven't gotten a lot of ambient music on this list, but I really like it, and it's well executed here. 4/5
For a shogazey album, I actually liked this quite a bit. Atmospheric but also interesting.
Relaxing and chill, you know I love that watery post-rock.
Full disclosure: I love Spiritualized. This may not be my favorite album of theirs, but I still loved the way it made me feel like I was floating, ethereal, weightless. I see a lot of reviewed noting that this didn't "grab" the listener, and I agree, this is not the thing for when you want pathos, melody, hooks, driving rhythms. This is for when you want to suspend reality and float in space a bit. These guys invented the genre, and I'm here for it. 4/5
Nostalgic and hypnotising
This is the second spiritualized album on the list. Even though I think I preferred the other one (floating in space), this is still the excellent mix between ambient, rock, and drone I love.
Very splendid and well produced album
Pleasant surprise here. Dream pop/space rock that does a good job of layering without feeling overly ethereal. Sounds a little reminiscent of an early version of some of Kasabian's work. Album fades a bit toward the end as the tracks become longer and slower and more instrumental. Standouts are "I Want You" and "Run"
Great music for doing drugs.
I like the ambient noodling, but I prefer Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space. I like that it's different to a lot of stuff. The horns and keys washing in and fading out amongst the other bits and bobs is great I'm not usually a fan of soundscapes, but they do this very well.
I prefer "Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space" but this album is also good. 3.5/5 Highlights: You Know It's True, Take your Time, Shine a Light
Today my horizons are being broadened further still with another band I’ve never heard before. Spiritualized leads me to expect some trippy psychedelic stuff, so let’s listen and find out! Songs I already knew: none Favourites: You Know It’s True, Smiles This was a delight. It is a deluge of harmonies and synths. I’m not one to regularly partake of the devil’s lettuce, but imagine that a night in a cosy Amsterdam room with this playing would bring a really mellow high. There seem to be positive vibes all round, with lyrics about love and happiness. Truly, despite this being a repeat of what I’ve already said, this really was a delightful album. It’s just the best word for it.
I had heard a Spiritualized album before (the big one), but this one may have made even more of an impression on me. Spacey and atmospheric at points, epic and bombastic at others. Very surprised to learn this released in 1992, it sounds a lot more modern than many other albums of its time. I really enjoyed this listen, and hope I remember to come back to it.
That felt proto-post rock, just with synthesizers. I quite liked it. Very chill
Chill and relaxing, more consistently spacy than “Ladies and gentlemen…”
This is good ambient stuff.
If it's one thing I love, it's psychedelic music. And this, this is certainly psychedelic music. This album is pretty good if I do say so myself. The shoegaze and spacey instrumentation on this album is pretty crazy. My personal favorites are Shine a Light and Angel Sigh. Those two songs really do show off the spacey nature of this album pretty well. The way the vocals kind of blend into the music as well is also pretty neat. These two songs are without a doubt my favorites, but all the songs are pretty good. The only song I'm not too hot on is Symphony Space. I don't know. The ambient and spacey nature of this track, as much as I like it on other songs, didn't click for me too much. It kind of sucks as it is the only instrumentals on the record but I don't really connect with this one. It just went on for too long and didn't do much else to impress me. In all honesty, though, this album is good. I'd give it a 8/10, pretty good in my opinion.
Very nice
Some great tracks here.
I was a huge fan of Gentlemen We Are in Space, and this has the same qualities I loved, just with less impactful tracks. It's a mixture of psychedelic dream pop and lush space rock full of strange sound effects reminiscent of early industrial music or contemporaries like Stereolab. I enjoy the slight modulations in these long tracks. In "I Want You", I can hear Madchester in the vocals and groove, but shoegaze in that bass and guitar distortion. The lengths of the second half are dramatically longer than the first, and yet it's all very digestible and entertaining, capable of hiding in the background or entertaining me as I dissect each song's components and analyzing how its wall of sound changes over time. I guess there were a few tracks that I didn't care for too much like "Take your Time" and "Angel Sigh", but it easily blended in the background and was soothing at the least. I do think an hour was too long.
For all the ratings I’ve given throughout my 1001 Albums journey so far, however considered or arbitrary, one of my biggest regrets is giving Spiritualized’s “Ladies and Gentlemen, We Are Floating in Space” a 2. I’ll admit that my initial impression was one of severe boredom, but I wasn’t giving myself time to adjust to its lush sonic world: there are some transcendent tracks on there. So, I’ve been eager to have the chance to reassess Spiritualized with this, their first album from 1992. “Lazer Guided Melodies” is full of slow burns and blissed out waves: clouds, haze and all the organ. Most of the songs alternate between two chords (the same two, in different keys) but I’m fine with that: the beauty lies in spending time in this world, letting it envelop us, wash over completely. The lullaby introduction of “You Know Its True”, the crushing slow build of “If I Were With Her Now”, the tender ballad of “Step Into the Breeze” (listen out for spine-tingling one-note strings!), the slightly raga-leaning “Sway”… they’re all enchanted lakes to get lost in and soothe the soul. Crucially for its runtime, “Laser Guided Melodies” isn’t a complete snooze-fest and the arrangements are reasonably dynamic. Tempos shift and change across the running time as the band flirt with shoegaze and give their drummer a reason to exist. “I Want You”’s palpable energy calls to mind Primal Scream, while “Run” is a nice homage (and, whisper it… vast improvement) to Velvet Underground. Later, “Shine a Light” represents Spiritualized tipping their hat to gospel, with a very noisy crescendo at the end. Finally, I must shout out “200 Bars”: the premise of this last track, a voice literally counting out 200 bars of music which slowly crystallise into a song, is inspired. As the voice doing the counting fades, the lead vocal sings “I’m losing track of time in 200 bars”… genius. It does hit a bit of a lull in the middle: “Symphony Space” is the most indulgent moment, a shapeless wallow leaving no impression. “Take Your Time”, following it, is also feels a little too lethargic. But it’s still good wallowing music, and I’m sure will hit much harder if I’m in the right mood. Maybe Spiritualized albums demand multiple listens, or maybe they demand a certain dreamlike state, or time of day. But I liked this one so much more for giving it time, and feel ready to return to “Ladies and Gentlemen”… their music plays the long game.
Great album
Interesting
Mood
I actually really enjoyed this one. Some really beautiful textures and cool arranging. My favorite was Angel Sigh. 3.5
Really like this one, never heard anything similar. The song Shine a Light is my favourite.
Spaaaaaaaaaace
Pretty chill album, I enjoyed it.
Rolig atmosfærisk deilig wavey
Legitimately had no idea what to expect with this album, but it was wonderful. Sounds like LCD Soundsystem with more rock elements included. Favorite track: Sway
Such a wild record. This would be a great one to fall asleep to.
Spiritualized - very chill, instrumentation nice, kind of choir like. Sounds like stone roses but a bit wilder. Symphony space a bit boring, first song a bit too choirey. Shine a light - uplifting, spacey, experimental, love the track, what a finish Long songs towards the end Good overall album, not always the most recognisable singles. But all together it makes a pretty nice listen!
It took me three listens to get into the right mindset to enjoy it. But when I got there, this ambient space rock was a great experience.
Very ambient indie rock. I guess it's called Space Rock? Seems like good background music. Run caught me. I started drumming with my fingers, so maybe not entirely in the background :)
I'd always meant to listen to Spiritualised but had never got around to it, so thanks to 'the project' for finally getting me there. Having listened, I'm slightly regretful it's taken me so long, as I like this a lot. Layered, textured and atmospheric, this album sweeps over you and carries you along in its wake. Apparently the genre is space rock. The four coloured movements all have quite distinct auras. With a technically stronger singer this could have been perfect. I'm looking forward to 'Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space' coming up. Rating: 4/5 Playlist track: If I Were With Her Now Date listened: 07/01/23
Heel tof!
Great stuff. Been listening to Spiritualized ever since the epiphany that is Ladies and Gentleman.
I really need to be listening to more Spiritualized. They have such a unique sound.
One doesn’t think of Spiritualized as understated but in this case the record’s undeniable interest and, ultimately, power sort of sneaks up. “Shine and Light” (what a bass or baritone sax-ing) and “Angel Sigh” are the twin peaks late of a very strong finish that pays off handsomely for the fairly slow (or slow-building) start.
Mmmmye fint!
I don’t get spiritualized
Hey it smells like patchouli in here.
was not expecting this to be the genre that it was based on the album cover so I was very pleasantly surprised!
Very good zoning in and getting work done music. I love the depth and layers of sounds going on. Should use my headphones next time.
An album that you have to let flow over you. Took a few tries with Spiritualized but really liked this.
Probably like a 3.75 but I'll round up
Nice Shoegaze album, if Slowdive would not have existed 5 stars, now 4 (-:
This album was pretty trippy overall. I really enjoyed the instrumental sound of the album.
A really beautiful record. Earliest I've heard sounds like this, that really drive a sound that lives on to this day.
V good, almost 5 stars
Def a mood. Not for me, but was not unpleasant.
I rember this being pretty good i like this band
I really like these guys. A band I had not heard of before starting this 1001 albums project. Earlier I had their album Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space and loved it. This one is not quite as good but still excellent. 4 stars.
Its absolutely lush. A begrudging minus 1 for its length
I liked that. Kinda trippy. Album cover encapsulates the vibe
Pretty transcendent chill relaxing vibes. I could listen to this all day. In fact, I think I might! Great music to work to.
I kinda liked it, though I wasn't paying a whole lot of attention. It was great background music to work to and more of my style of music. It looped around again and I didn't even notice because I was enjoying it.
Ladies and Gentlemen is one of my favorite 90's alt rock albums, but my experience with their other stuff is surprisingly limited. Surprise surprise, I loved this! The melodies aren't nearly as calculated as the title would make you think- it's an organic listen that has killer transitions. I don't love it as much as their opus yet, but this is def a grower. B+
This feels like it’s intended as an album listen not as a collection of songs - in that way it’s an excellent record
New to me, and I'm impressed. It's catchy but at the same time has an ethereal quality to it, and a repetitiveness that is at times is almost trance inducing. I'll be back.
So this is where it all began, you can feel the underpinnings of floating in space but it's not quite as impactful but still something I'd love to spend more time with. Faves: I Want You, Sway, 200 Bars
What a gorgeous floaty album! A lovely and relaxing listen. Wonderful space rock. Very dreamy.
I was surprised by this one, very spacey and cool,
Lovely stuff. Overwhelming and ethereal, just a really great and huge sound
i am SHOCKED this album hasn't been sampled to death already
Admittedly I do not know much about the space rock revival, but this album bodes well for the genre. With sounds that are floaty, fun, and comforting, Spiritualized brings a great soundscape to the table that would surely be appreciated by the likes of Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Sigur Ros, and maybe even My Bloody Valentine. Great record for the likes of 1992.
4/5. Spiritualized comes through 🤘
7/10 at first i was like. why are they playing the same chord so many times. but then my mindset shifted and i was vibing out
Spacey. A couple of songs had really cool moments. 7/10
Also The Stone Roses haben mit ihrem Album The Stone Roses ein tolles Werk erschaffen.
Intricate, bisweilen noisy, ziemlich cool.
Love a bit of Spiritualized
Took a lot of the ideas from Spaceman 3's Playing with Fire, and actually executed them well. Dreamy, floaty, and almost zen.
Now I do like a space rock album, and this was no exception. I think it did drag a bit in a few places, but the atmosphere and songwriting were stellar.
This kinda thing isn't normally by bag, but I really, really liked this album. The melodies were cool. It really did feel like they were guided by lasers. I'll admit the bias in my rating, but they get a bump for A) my never having heard of them before, and B) the surprise nature of my enjoyment.
More gorgeous lush melodies and drifts from Jason.
Very relaxing and enjoyable, though don't think any particular song is that memorable.
A very nice mellow interesting listen.
Mad psychedelic cosmic shit going down here. Inebriation recommended!!
This is some awesome ass work music. Where did this album come from? I've never heard it or heard OF it. It does a really admirable job of getting into a groove and then pressing it along like a rolling boulder, which is honestly its major charm in my opinion. It takes a lot of the prog rock methodology and puts it in an alt/pop/post-new wave format. 1992? I'm impressed!
One I hadn't heard. 60s influence but chill. I really like it.
Atmospheric while preserving melody, which is not easy to do, but not quite the achievement that Ladies and Gentlemen is. Best track: You Know It's True
Cracking bit of space-rock.
Vg
I did not know that the debut album of Spiritualized was this good. I only focused on Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space, while Lazer Guided Melodies is also a blast. The space rock and shoe gaze songs are a bit more structured and compact than on the later album.
I like the wildly schizophrenic dynamics that flung most songs between acoustic and quasi-symphonic passages. (7/10) Favourite Tracks: Step into the Breeze, If I Were with Her Now
Faktisk fedt ambience musik
I liked it a lot! Great kinda spacey psychedelic dream rock. Probably excellent for watching the rain on a cool morning.
This band is the reason I wanted to listen to this 1001 albums list. Never heard of them before now I am a fan. Love the sound. 4/5
Loved this. Lush, dreamy, spacey arrangements. I want to explore more of the band's work now. Fave songs: Shine a Light, Sway, Step Into the Breeze, 200 Bars
Great album!
21/06/2021 Ricardo was here. Good album
dreamy, like James Bond meets Lana Del Rey
Definitely not my favorite album by them, but it's still super dreamy and space-age, which is a delight to hear.
Cigarettes After Sex vibes CAS vibes just getting stronger Very long songs mein gott Final Thoughts: 4/5
Another album of which I was completely unaware, and liked more than I expected to. I particularly enjoyed "Run".

Psychedelic, Brit-Pop, Electronica, this album has it all! I had never heard anything this early in Spiritualized's discography, but I'm glad I got to experience it. Hoping "Ladies and Gentlemen..." is on this list somewhere too.
As background music during work I quite enjoyed it. It was relaxing, pleasant and the slight "space-sound" touches made parts of it interesting too. Still as pure background music it's not interesting enough for a 5.
better than expected—but very ambient music type
more of a ladies and gentlemen we are floating in space kinda guy. pretty good but its the archetypal you've got to be in the mood for it music.
Good debut album, probably not a new favorite artist though.
I'm a massive fan of "Ladies & Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space", but I haven't listened to this album much, which seems.... weird. It's got all the elements I love. I think I just need to spend more time with it, so going into my third play through now... Fave track - "Take Your Time", at the moment, but there are a couple of other contenders... I really don't know why I never got into this album as much as "Ladies & Gentlemen..."!?
I really enjoyed this.
Very good album
Solid spacey rock.
Very floaty. Enjoyed this, not as much of the floating through space album
Snivilization
Angel Sigh is a fantastic track. Really cool album, nothing more to say.
Excellent
6/2 3.75/5. The softness of Dream Pop with spacey Rock elements. Standout Tracks: You Know It's True, Symphony Space, Shine a Light, Sway, 200 Bars
trance
I've expected a little bit different experience, something not that "Spiritualized" for some reason ha-ha
I can't say I get this album the way others do.
3.5
I really like Ladies and gentlemen we are floating in space and this has lots of the same qualities, blissed out guitar reveries, hooky riffs that drag you in, hazy atmospheres. What it doesn’t have is some of the crunch and changes in mood of that album and this eventually leaves the whole thing a little too blissed out
Listened to this like six times and I still can't tell whether or not I like it. I'm pretty sure I'd like it if it was only instrumentals. Dude's singing is kind of whispery annoying.
Bit wishy washy, but pleasant enough.
You Know It’s True 🌟
Ladies and Gentlemen, we are little woobly lava lamp people. The album is also full of woobly lava lamp music. To me, it is sadly mid. Would be better with less vocals, maybe. The 2nd half is better than the first half. Highlights: 'Sway', '200 Bars'
I saw this band described as “space rock”. I didn’t know what that meant but listening to them, it made a ton of sense.
This is like ambient background noise from my 90s in high school and college. Perfectly anodyne.
nice enough
A good, but meandering record
Kinda drags at some points but there are cool bits too? Rock music on downers is a bit of a weird proposition.
It’s ok background music. Not bad but also not groundbreaking.
Really cool album concept! Feels like im in space!
2026.07.30
Moments of intriguing spacey music, moments of pretty dull drone music. Overall, I don’t think it was spacey or experimental enough for my expectations. But it was still pretty decent, and well produced. 3/5.
interesting meditation but kinda just washed over me
Heroin drone guitar hypnotics. Love it.
Solid.
If you are not spiritual before listening to Lazer Guided Melodies and then you listen to the album, do you become Spiritualized? Either way, it’s worth the one hour listen. Enjoyed all songs except the final 200 Bars. Great mellow background music while multitasking. (3.3*s) Stargaze = shoe gaze + space rock.
vibes
I think I had Spiritualized and Suicidal Tendencies mixed up in my head. Was not expecting something so Stone Roses-y. But with less groove. Not a big fan through the first half of the record. The album is so sleepy and dull. Weird one, in isolated moments I think I should be enjoying this, but the overall impact was so much of the same uninspiring sound. 2.6/5
This is not a genre that I am usually into, but maybe I'm just in the right mood for it. I really like this. (Note: it's late at night on a Saturday and I'm quite buzzed.) These guys are like a slowed-down Velvet Underground. I dig it. Very close to 4 stars but not quite.
Quality, if a little too sedated, 90s space rock.
"Lazer Guided Melodies" by Spiritualized is a great debut album by the band. This album has very calming and fun tracks to listen. It has a very good opening "You Know It's True" and has consistent of sounding till "Run". After that I found the album loses interest for a while and then regains with "Shine a Light" (a highlight from the album) and again start to look good. But I find they dragged the song length which is not needed. I find most of the tracks repetitive also. Overall, very good album but I think they dragged too much in song length and some tracks are not needed. Besides that a good debut album by Spiritualized
I think this might be quite good, great even, but I am in the middle of a project and only heard the first half or so. I think I will give it for now, a standard rating and do a more thorough review at a later date. I did try though, and instead of a did not listen I will say so far it is quite interesting.
Listens: 2.5 Standout Tracks: None Ya know... when I read the Wikipedia blurb and the first sentence contains the term "space rock"... I was sort of expecting something better than this. I was thinking some spacey and psychedelic music like Grateful Dead or Pink Floyd or even Rush's 2112. Instead we get some vague, barely-spacey sounding shoegaze rock music. Needs much harder hitting sound. Needs more future sounding synth. Needs more cymbals and percussion. Track lengths are also too short to really get into it. This album isn't bad. I found lying in bed last night, listening to this album that it was even somewhat peaceful. But it's also not good. It's bland and unremarkable. I could not tell you one track from another. I couldn't remember any notable parts of the music, and by the 3rd listen, I turned off this album and put on MF DOOM's BORN LIKE THIS.
My previous album's artist name was Spirit now I've got Spirtualized, I wonder what is next, Spirituality? This album is a superb 'chill-out' sort of album, it feels very peaceful and delicate. I swear I can hear clouds coming from this. It's quite repetitive, but it it works well like that. It's not really a sort of in-your-face confrontational album, if anything it's the opposite. These guys are shy as all hell! Typical Indie's, pfttt. I liked this album more than I didn't. I think this is a album that might grow on me. I might return to this album in the near future. Highlight Song/s: "Step Into the Breeze" and "Take Your Time"
Certainly interesting for the time - was this the beginning of shoegaze? - but the dreamy ambiance and formless songs make for too sleepy of a time for me. Beautiful background music
This is a tough one. I really liked everything from "Take Your Time" on, but I was pretty cool on this album up until that point. I think that last handful of tracks needs the buildup for me to really appreciate it, but I just was not very engaged with the first two-thirds of this album. This one is fine overall, and probably gets a 2.5/5 from me, but I'll round it up for the sake of the strong ending. Favorite track: "Shine a Light," probably
Nice. But I just wanted to hear Sigur Ros the whole time.
I’d join this cult for the vibes
Weird but OK. Not my preference, but nothing that hurts the ears.
Really spacious, very ethereal, but also not the most immersive. I liked a lot of what they did in the first half of the album, creating some really big space rock tracks that are very calming while also very fun to listen to. The opener may be super soothing and relaxing, but it is from the song "If I were With Her Now" to "Run" where it gets more uplifting, with very catchy melodies sang by the incredibly soft and ethereal voice, very distorted electric guitars playing nice riffs and lines, entertaining rhythms and a lot of elements in the background to create big and immersive atmospheres. The next couple of tracks, "Smiles" and "Step into the Breeze", enter again in the softer and relaxed side. "Smiles" is a very short song that doesn't really do much, as it starts calms and then instruments start coming in the middle point without ever reaching any really interesting point. The other song, "Step into the Breeze", features some very beautiful sounding violins and nice loud moments when the electric guitars come in. Once reached the ambient track "Symphony Space", is when the album, to me, starts to feel dragging. The songs become very slow, repetitive, without reaching any climax or building interesting or immersive atmospheres. There were some moments that sounded very promising: I liked the saxophone in "Shine a Light", but I think it is really repetitive and I liked the sudden bursts of instruments in "Angel Sigh" as well, but they last very little and they don't really feel that epic, so in the end they weren't doing that much for me. With that being said, I don't think these songs are bad at all. They still have the very pleasant, relaxing and spacious sound, regardless of how I feel about the ideas. Ultimately, I think it is a decent album, one with a very unique space atmosphere and that makes me feel intrigued about how "Ladies and gentlemen we are floating in space" will sound.
Chill, not bad. That's all I've got with this one.
Liked this a little better than Ladies and Gentleman. Seemed more cohesive and less pretentious than that later release. That being said, it's still something that bores me.
Lullabies for robot babies.
Its an okay album melo vibes 6/10
I liked the album a lot, but I felt it is too long for this type of music.
meh
nicht schlecht, aber nicht mehr
Spacy slightly ethereal electronica, quite enjoyed it
You aren't going to get a lot of hooks on this, but you are going to get a lot of atmosphere. Sounding like that feeling you experience before you drift off into a deep sleep, the repetitive music that can put you into a trance. It's not quite shoegaze, but has elements of that sound. "Symphony Space" is straight up relaxing ambient music. Unfortunately it does drag on longer than it needed to. This didn't need to be an hour long. I got what I needed out of this 40 minutes in and I did groan a bit at getting handed a 6-7 minute song so late into the record. I don't think I would put this on again to pay deep attention to every track, but it works well for spacey background music.
If Ladies And Gentlemen is a bombastic intergalactic adventure then this is a slow float through the solar system with the occasional passing asteroid. I like how the songs on each side flow into each other. The lyrics are mostly secondary with the vocals acting more as texture to the instrumentation. Favorites are I Want You, Run, and Angel Sigh.
Second half of the album was more enjoyable. Maybe I just had to get used to their tone to begin enjoying it more.
Got techno vibes but slightly better
This was really cool. I don't particularly know why we keep getting so much of these spa sound albums, but this one was better than most in that realm. Maybe it just caught me in the right day, but I absolutely found myself just getting swept along by it, cool and calm.
Geht so
Quite boring at times but overall vibe was nice
so ~nearly~ good
Some very relaxing melodies with a few memorable highlights. Atmospheric sounds that relate well to the sing titles.
Odd that this one is on the list ahead of Spitirualized's other records, imo. Maybe a quirk of the timing? Possibly their weakest album, albeit it's still pretty good in a general sense.
Sleepy dreamy snoozy snooze
I have no specific memories of anything from any of the tracks of this album that I listened to yesterday. I do remember that it was on the borderline of being boring enough that I wanted to switch to something else, but while drone-y it till kept it juuuust interesting enough Standouts - 3/5
This was fine, but nothing special.
interesting sound definitely not smthn i wldve listened to in my own, cool cover art
It's 3.5
3 - ok became background music after awhile
The momentum that was building on the first half completely vanishes once track 7 starts.

Not what I was expecting Always thought Spiritulized were a dance act, so was pleasantly surprised. Meanders along nicely, pretty melodies and reminiscent of velvet underground somewhat. Cover art is dreadful though. Favourite track: You know it’s true
So we had these guys awhile back and much like that album, I found myself all over the place with my thinking. With each listen I get a little more interested and bored at the same time with the "dream sequence" sound. I can see in the right atmosphere and mushroom state of mind how someone would call this a pretty good album. I can also see how someone would ask WTF. I found myself more on the enjoyable side. First several songs and lyrics were pretty good. Then halfway through we hit a 6 minute period of the "dreamy, spaced out" sound then it seem tp be quite prevalent and just got to be a bit too much. Think I listened to this 5-6 times I bet I would have given a different rating each listen. In conclusion after saying a lot of nothing, I liked a good portion of what this album offered. 1st 6 songs and 200 Bars were the best. Symphony is Space and after lost me a bit. I have this in mind my next mushroom journey. But for now, I'll go with a 3. I'd listen again. 3
3 We’ve experienced this group on this list before with Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space, and for an album designated as “space rock”, I remember it feeling pretty underwhelming. The title track was neat with its atmospheric take on Elvis, but honestly, not a single other thing comes to mind thinking about it now. So, I revisited my review on it, and it seems I found the music to consist mostly of mediocre Britpop tunes with the occasional strings and sci-fi flourishes. Fortunately, I definitely picked up more of a “space” vibe in this go-round, and it results in a lot of really cool moments. The only problem - it results in a lot of weird, drawn-out ambient bullshit just as often. Like, for every period of enjoyability, it really felt like there was another just as annoying awaiting me. The album still flows quite well overall despite those shifts, but that also makes it hard for me to pinpoint any specific examples - it feels more accurate to say that it just sort of slowly dips in and out of listenable, quality songwriting at any given moment. I can confidently say, however, that the two most extreme poles of enjoyability for me lie in Angel Sigh and Symphony Space. Angel Sigh isn’t just my favorite song on the album, but it’s also probably the heaviest it has to offer. Like, if you want your journey through time and space to feel powerful and climactic as f***, like a true sci-fi epic should, that’s the track for you. When I think of the term “space rock”, Angel Sigh aligns pretty closely with what I imagine and would hope for from the genre - not Symphony Space, which is basically just six minutes of drone noises. I mean, yes, there’s certainly a sci-fi feel to that and it doesn’t exactly feel out of place, but I still found it to be a bit of a vibe killer each time I listened through anyway. As for the rest of the album, I feel like you could just listen to the two aforementioned songs and fill in the gaps yourself what midpoints between them might sound like. There’s definitely a psychedelic nature about this as well, so I could very much see this being an experience on drugs, but as of right now, I don’t feel particularly incentivized to go and try that out. That said, I’d be interested to hear what an Interstellar 2 or Project Hail Mary 2 score from this group might sound like.
Meh, it didn't grab me
I didn't hate it. Not sure it belongs on this list though.
pretty dope. didn't stick with me particularly. favorite song is If I Were with Her Now, really brings a dab of funk to the whole spacey vibey thing, also love Shine a Light
5/10
It was okay. Not spectacular, but enough to bump above a 2.5
Some tracks were oddly hypnotic with moments of unexpected loveliness, and others were just... dull. I'd have to listen to it again though to work out which ones were which.
A few good songs and a few snoozers. Overall, a decent album for background. Nothing really stands out as great.
Liked it. Sounds like a Pepsi commercial from 1997.
It promised so much and let me down
Très chill, diffus
Chill to have on in the background.
Another album from an artist I didn't know. That is interesting at least. Every song starts out as a beautiful song, then the vocals come in and you get disappointed. Then the song never ends. Could've been wonderful, but falls way short of that.
Interesting album. No particular track fully stood about but I need more time with it. Not sure what to fully make of it. Think I’ll go back to it.
I'm a little surprised at the low-ish ratings for this one; I can see how people would find it a bit repetitive and meandering, but I dug the spread out, spacey vibe for the most part. I think it sounded relatively modern to have come out in 1992.
I went into this one completely blind. I don't always live shoegazer music, but this was ok.
This has something to it. It didn't annoy me painting so I'll give 3
