2 It seems our summer of love-era psychedelic scene made its way south at some point. Hearing a fusion of more traditional Latin American music with what reminded me of The Zombies was interesting at first, but I feel like it ultimately kind of resulted in the worst of both worlds, as no part of this album comes anywhere near the abstractly trippy or catchily danceable highs of either genre. I will say, I’m trying to open my mind as much as I can with this list, but some of these foreign language albums can be hard for me, as I’m a very lyric-driven person and only fluent in English. I really need something else strong to grab onto if I’m going to be drawn in, and this didn’t give me that. Didn’t dislike, but I found it pretty forgettable, and I don’t think I’m likely to return.

One of the things I like about this process is being able to rummage around in the rock and roll basement (in the basement..down in the basement) and find out who is playing/writing/producing on these records. When I saw who it was I went looking for Gilberto Gil and sure enough there he is co writing some of these tracks. I saw Gilberto about 10 years ago at the Opera House, one of the most extraordinary nights of my life. We got there about 30 minutes before the start and the place was heaving, they were singing and dancing BEFORE the gig, they had their own party happening just in preparation for the great man. Then the gig started, hooley dooley. I'm starting to think Dimery is just ticking boxes for the list. This is ok, it drifts along and has some interesting moments and some nice moments, Clarice is lovely. But would I ever listen to this again? No.

Easy listening in such a beautiful language. Sounded fine to me but not thrilling.

OK, nice enough. Pleasant, if slightly forgettable tunes, and cheerful 60s production. My Portuguese is sadly lacking, so I can't really get the impact of lyrics. The music is light and frothy and upbeat and cheesy, with a Latin swing that is fun. Pleasant enough, but doesn't really grab me.

I thought I'd like this more than I actually did. I like music from Central and South America, but I found this rather disappointing.

Found it quite chilled out but I didn't really like it. Not understanding the language feels like I'm missing out on a lot of the album's nuance.

I liked some of the guitar work, but overally this wasn't anything I could get into. Didn't want to turn it off, so it had that going for it, I guess.

It's...eh? At the risk of an easy/novice comparison... the only other Brazilian artist i've heard on here was Clube da Esquina which was mind-blowing and has become a favourite. This album doesn't have anywhere near the same musical passages, drama, diversity, and occasional explosiveness of expression that that one has. And I realize it's a lame comparison (sample size of TWO) but I can't help but make the parallel. And this just comes up short and uninteresting overall. 4/10 2 stars

Tries my patience to be honest. All seems very adept and there are some interesting "textures" but orchestration is scatty and the often used vocal echo/reverb is oppressive. There is a lack of direction which may be due to cultural differences. Not for me and I don't think ill be exploring the extensiveback catalog. 2.5

Music for a bad Spanish restaurant

I didn’t like this. An odd mix of psychedelic Brazilian and spoken word weirdness. I think I’m not hippie enough to enjoy this.

Overall pretty bland. I did like the attempts at Billie Jean, but I wouldn't listen again.

Brazil does 60s psychedelia. Pretty straight forward and not my thing

This is why I love this challenge. This is the kinda stuff I love listening to. I didn't really enjoy it, but I'm happy I listened to it since it's so outside my wheelhouse. It was a very interesting mix of genres that didn't feel very coherent. An experiment absolutely, but one that I don't think was a success. Too many things were tried to be done at once and it results in a confusing mess. But it was a really interesting listen to but I don't think I'll be returning to this. 2.5/5

I guess I'm not a fan of Tropicália. I find the overall sound a bit light and the music unstructured. I thought maybe I just wasn't in the mood, but when spotify (twice) offered up other Brazilian artists afterward I started bobbin' my head and snappin' my fingers.

Brazilian singers have the most mellifluous voices and I think Caetano Veloso is the smoothest of them all. This debut album by him would go perfectly with lounging on Ipanema beach on a beautiful sunny morning while sipping a pina colada. This is a decent debut but its a bit inconsistent and it doesn't features any keepers like his later material, eg O Leaozinho, or Sonho Meu. But that voice.... ahhh.

He is a brasilian singer, I haven't referents of him and the samba I don't like, sorry.

Contrasting opinions on this- I like the genre but this album veers wildly from chaotic tunes to steady almost enjoyable Brazilian beat pieces It seems like the Milton Nascimento album- there are so many other better albums out there but the '1001 album' judges just choose the first album by an influencial band and stick with it?

Le lien vers Tidal ne mène pas au bon album. Ça m’a pris un moment le réaliser et je n’aimais vraiment pas mon écoute puisque je me retrouvais sur un album live. Après avoir réalisé l’erreur et trouvé le bon album, l’écoute était beaucoup plus agréable. On se retrouve avec un rock psychédélique comme il s’en faisait à cette époque, mais la touche Brézilienne amène une couleur intéressante. Pas un coup de cœur, mais content de l’avoir écouté.

I'm probably being too harsh on this album, but it did nothing for me.

Brazil the "tropical paradise", revolutionized by the "tropicália" movement. Combining the traditional and the popular, as well as the foreign and the local, the mentioned movement changed the culture and even the politics of Brazil. One person deserves respect for igniting such movement: Caetano Veloso. Did his self-titled album captured at least the beginning of this movement? Perhaps. But I don't get it. Chill vibes, psychedelic bossa nova, decent voice... it didn't clicked with me. Maybe a couple of lessons in Portuguese and Brazilian history might help. Still, I appreciate it. I didn't enjoy it, but I respect it

Not bad

Is this Brazilian lounge music? I don't really know what lounge music is, but it might be this? This list has a well-observed bias for American and UK rock music. There is occasional token representation from the rest of the world - sometimes the selections fit as an influential example of the evolution of musical styles and fusions. But why is this relatively boring Brazilian album from 1968 such a must listen in music history? The finale, "Eles," was the only song that was interesting. And then it was thankfully over.

This album is pleasant enough due to its “tropicalismo” musical instrumentation. However, the arrangements are disjointed at times and of course, I don’t know Portuguese. So I would rather listen to something else.

Pensando que esta lista de 1001 discos era muy anglocentrista y me sorprende con Caetano Veloso. La verdad es que aparte de "Soy loco por tí América" me ha parecido bastante aburrido aunque en 1967 seguramente fue una novedad interesante.

Love the album cover, but the music not so much. It's pleasant enough, but a bit easy listening-ish. 2 stars.

Caetano Veloso was arrested and exiled by Brazil's military dictatorship in 1969 for making music that was considered politically subversive and dangerous. The military dictatorship was wrong about most things. This review is not about those things. The album is sung entirely in Portuguese, which is either an artistic statement about Brazilian cultural identity or a significant barrier to entry depending on your relationship with the Portuguese language, which in my case is nonexistent. The music alone does not compensate for the language barrier sufficiently to move the needle for me. I read that when he was 40, he began a relationship with a 13 year old girl who later became his wife. That is not something I can ignore given my established standards and reviews of other artists who despite being talent musicians are not good humans. 1 out of 5. The single star is not for the music. It's because I couldn't give it a zero. The star is withheld entirely. There are no stars available for this review.

Nach dem noch recht braven, bossa-nova-nahen Domingo aus dem Vorjahr bricht Veloso hier radikal mit sich selbst: elektrische Gitarren, Fuzz, Streicher, indische Anklänge, alles nebeneinander, ohne Rücksicht auf Stilreinheit. Das Label veröffentlicht die Platte im April 1968, mitten im Entstehen dessen, was kurz darauf Tropicalismo heißen wird. Den Titel des Openers „Tropicália" hat Veloso sich gar nicht selbst ausgedacht – Filmproduzent Luiz Carlos Barreto schlägt ihn vor, in Anlehnung an eine Installation des Künstlers Hélio Oiticica, die Veloso zu dem Zeitpunkt nicht einmal kannte. Trotzdem trifft der Name die Sache: eine Platte, die brasilianische Popkultur, Carmen Miranda, Roberto Carlos und internationale Psychedelia in einen Topf wirft und umrührt. „Alegria, Alegria", schon 1967 als Single ein Skandal wegen der E-Gitarren, bekommt hier seinen endgültigen Platz, ebenso das leichtfüßige „Superbacana" und das latin-schwere „Soy Loco por Ti, América". Veloso selbst hat das Album später als „amateurhaft und wirr" bezeichnet – ich finde gerade das macht einen Teil seines Reizes aus. A hodge podge of sounds, that actually work well together. I love the arrangements, but tired of his voice and kept hoping for more instrumental breaks. I would give it a 3, but I can't. Real life creeps get a 1.

The contrast between the "godfather of school shootings" photo on the front of this record, and the almost uncanny valley Spotify "profile photo" of ol' Caetano has sent me into a tailspin. In this photo, he has to have a glass of wine or some sort of automatic rifle just out of frame. Only people with that haircut and turtleneck combo at that age, are at least 12 pages into a manifesto of some sort. As opposed to the smiling granola grandpa on Spotify. That's a guy who people exclaim "I can't believe he's 80, he's so active!" We truly contain multitudes. The music here was far less grumpy than the cover and frankly so far beyond me that I can't even review this. The album is entirely in Portuguese? Spanish? I believe he is Brazilian, but I am not certain, as I (surprise!) don't speak either language. I found the singing to be far too loud, tuneless and irritating. The music was boring and far too quiet. This sucks. For all of life is dismal grey march towards certain death. 1 HIGHLIGHTS: Garbonzo beans are rich in iron, and a nutritious alternative to various meats!

Oh my. Another one with a preference for 13 year olds that we need to apply the "review the music, not the artist rule" to. Which would be a lot easier if the music didn't sound like Portugal's 12th placed entry in the 1965 Eurovision Song Contest. Hard to like this one.

As you know with this challenge, I really struggle with music in another language. I connect most with lyrics and storytelling, and that’s something I just can’t fully access here. Because of that, this album never really grabbed me in the way I want music to. I found it pleasant enough as background music, the sort of thing you can have on while not really paying attention. But beyond that, it didn’t leave much of an impression, and I have no desire to come back to it again. Favourite track: Soy loco por ti, América is probably the standout if I had to choose one. Least favourite tracks: Hard to pick. I didn’t hate anything, but I also never want to listen to any of it again. This is the very definition of background music. Album artwork: Superb. Colourful, intense, and that stare is properly evil — easily the best thing about the album.

This is #day522 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… not really something I feel like putting on when it's –10°C outside and snowing heavily. As much as I'm trying to stay open-minded on this journey, this record leaves me cold. I'm usually fine with late-'60s psychedelic stuff, but this one feels too exotic for me. Add to that Veloso's personal life history, and my interest drops with the temperature outside. This is a 1 out of 5. Looking forward to #day523.

The Good: I’ve always wanted to listen to an album by Caetano Veloso! The Bad: Now that I have, I wish I hadn’t… The Ugly: Yet another album = artist name So here’s the positive thing I learned from this album: the listing “other”, which relates to country of origin for the album, is wrong… Fleetwood Mac’s Rumors is listed as “other”… Anyway, I was excited when this album showed up as I’ve been using this artist’s name for ages, and it turns out that I’ve been using it erroneously. I thought that Caetano Veloso was some kind of Spanish singer… guess I was wrong. I know that there are several “Brazilian” tinted albums on this list and I’ve had the fortune of listening to a couple of them already. Yet, this is the second, or third, Brazilian album that makes me wonder what the fuck it is doing on the list… together with countless other shit albums I’ve had the misfortune of having to listen to. If the criteria to be on the list is to be the first of a style, then the list’s name should be changed, and shortened… as there can thus be only 1 jazz album, 1 rock album etc… This album, by the by, falls under the style of shit… You guessed it boys and girls, I am unable to rate this album any higher than 1*… and that makes 3 days in a row with 1* ratings… keeping my fingers crossed to see what the next album is...

I couldn't get into this at all. I wanted to with it's subversion of the authoritarian dictatorship that was happening in Brazil at the time. But I just couldn't. Too bad as I think it probably is a very important record.

This was very mid. Last Brazilian album I got was actually good. If the music doesn't move me, the lyrics won't because I don't know Portuguese. Apparently, Caetano does not like this album and I agree that it isn't that great.

Like a bad trip on a Brazilian beach where the end is near. The cover does the music full justice.

The opening song may be the best song on the album, the others having some serious missteps, sour notes, overuse of repetition and that sort of thing. I'm trying to stay open to the experience, but I think it is just not my cup of tea. First album in the list where I was wishing it would end sooner.

Yay, more Brazillian music with random noises! This has strong Os Mutantes vibes. Tropicalia is the music played over the credits to some terrible Brazilian 60s beach movie. I guess everything Brazillian is a beach movie. Anunciacao probably has something to do with a religious reference based on the title and the constant repetition of Maria and the pseudoreligious music during the chorus. A Brazilian mentioning Copa Cabana? Unheard of! If this was American or British music no way it makes this list. I'm paranoid I'm going to listen to an extra song. Maybe I'm biased to music in English....so be it.

Didn't enjoy this and didn't finish it. Feel bad to say but just didn't sit with me at all.

I’ve never heard of this artist or album before, but I really loved Os Mutantes, so I’m hoping that I’ll feel the same way about this album. Let’s get psychedelic! I’m trying to find a way to describe how I felt about this album that isn’t rude or demeaning, but I’m struggling to find the right words, so I’ll just say that this album wasn’t for me. I really didn’t care for the vocals at any point on this album, and there wasn’t really anything in the arrangements that I enjoyed much either. The string arrangements were okay, but they weren’t really that unique or noteworthy. The overall sound of this album was a bit of a mess; I think Caetano Veloso wanted to do create something interesting and unique, but I don’t think he ever really found his footing here. This is definitely not something I’d come back to, and with Os Mutantes on this list, I struggle to understand why this is on there as well.

You know when you’re in Lloret De Mar on your annual Wakes fortnight abroad and your skin is burning from too much sun, you have a bottle of red wine which is so good you take a bottle home and it tastes like ?&!*. Well there is no doubt that whilst you were feasting on Paella at Bodega Sa Xarxa music like this was pumping out of the systematic de altavoces and unfortunately suffers the same fate as the local plonk. Great whilst you were there but so is the Birdy Song. (I know this album is Brazilian and Portuguese applies but you get the picture) 1/5 4/3/25

Nice rhythm and feeling to the songs but they feel very old in the mixing. That plus me not knowing the language and therefore the lyrics made me not like the album. Also what's up with the Philips product placement on the album?

I'm sure that this was very trendy back in the late 1960's, but now more than 50 years later, it sounds very dated.

A common problem with this style of 60s psychedelia across the board is that there're too many whiplash style changes within individual songs as if pure juxtaposition is an incredibly clever compositional technique and that eclecticism means doing lots of different things in quick succession. It just ends up being annoying, like listening to someone else flicking through radio stations trying to find something good and then changing as soon as you're settling and starting to enjoy it. Likewise, the production is overly full and distractingly busy - too much flute and the chamber pop arrangements are cloying. Learn to say no. The songs where they keep it simple and stick to one sound are ok, at least not actively unpleasant. Something about Portuguese saudade style melodic phrasing just doesn't work for me either, every line can't be an anti-climax. I've tried to like tropicalia so many times - on paper sounds so cool - but it just doesn't work for me at all. Favorite: Eles

Look, I certainly don't think that everything on the list needs to rock an above-the-equator, western-culture aesthetic. There SHOULD be some cultural representation from around the world. But this? This whole Tropicália thing? It's just a mess as a genre. It has the potential for brilliance but seems to ALWAYS slip sideways into cheesy tropes instead. I started this album with a whole lot of grace in my heart... which eroded away into bitter anger that I had to listen to a whole album of cheeseball drivel. Hard pass.

I listened all the way through! I won't give a 2nd listen. I can firmly say, this wasn't for me. It didn't even really make me think of mi hermoso Puerto Rico. He sounded like he was having fun. I wasn't. Maybe the sounds of the Dear Science led to greater expectations. Doesn't matter.... 1 1

I couldn't get into this, I was hoping it would be interesting musically but yeah it's worse than the vocals.
