Reviews (page 7 of 7)

Not my jam... Spanish jamming

Not for me, at one point the piccolo player forgot which song they were doing.

The music is ok, I guess, nothing phenomenal, but the guy's a pedo and that just made it way less than ok to listen to.

Solid '2' from me until the Hail Mary in Latin. Ugh.

I tried....

Mitä helvettiä

I don't even think this is good, much less an album that everyone should hear.

Makes me nervous

Ziemlich seicht

A Brazilian Beatles wannabe that sounded like it would be perfectly placed in a Wes Anderson film.

As you know with this challenge, I really struggle with music in another language. I connect most with lyrics and storytelling, and that’s something I just can’t fully access here. Because of that, this album never really grabbed me in the way I want music to. I found it pleasant enough as background music, the sort of thing you can have on while not really paying attention. But beyond that, it didn’t leave much of an impression, and I have no desire to come back to it again. Favourite track: Soy loco por ti, América is probably the standout if I had to choose one. Least favourite tracks: Hard to pick. I didn’t hate anything, but I also never want to listen to any of it again. This is the very definition of background music. Album artwork: Superb. Colourful, intense, and that stare is properly evil — easily the best thing about the album.

This is #day522 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… not really something I feel like putting on when it's –10°C outside and snowing heavily. As much as I'm trying to stay open-minded on this journey, this record leaves me cold. I'm usually fine with late-'60s psychedelic stuff, but this one feels too exotic for me. Add to that Veloso's personal life history, and my interest drops with the temperature outside. This is a 1 out of 5. Looking forward to #day523.

The Good: I’ve always wanted to listen to an album by Caetano Veloso! The Bad: Now that I have, I wish I hadn’t… The Ugly: Yet another album = artist name So here’s the positive thing I learned from this album: the listing “other”, which relates to country of origin for the album, is wrong… Fleetwood Mac’s Rumors is listed as “other”… Anyway, I was excited when this album showed up as I’ve been using this artist’s name for ages, and it turns out that I’ve been using it erroneously. I thought that Caetano Veloso was some kind of Spanish singer… guess I was wrong. I know that there are several “Brazilian” tinted albums on this list and I’ve had the fortune of listening to a couple of them already. Yet, this is the second, or third, Brazilian album that makes me wonder what the fuck it is doing on the list… together with countless other shit albums I’ve had the misfortune of having to listen to. If the criteria to be on the list is to be the first of a style, then the list’s name should be changed, and shortened… as there can thus be only 1 jazz album, 1 rock album etc… This album, by the by, falls under the style of shit… You guessed it boys and girls, I am unable to rate this album any higher than 1*… and that makes 3 days in a row with 1* ratings… keeping my fingers crossed to see what the next album is...

Music is good but he cannot sing

Started to listen, not my Genre, sorry

Immediately no

Perhaps I lack the patience for it today. I can't relate to the music. After listening to two tracks, I was overcome by an urgent desire to switch off and listen to something else. 1/5

Not for me

Didn’t listen

Disco chato.

Was expecting more after the first Spanish album I had Didn't really grab me

This was very mid. Last Brazilian album I got was actually good. If the music doesn't move me, the lyrics won't because I don't know Portuguese. Apparently, Caetano does not like this album and I agree that it isn't that great.

Beatles with Portuguese

I refer you to my comments on Desperate Youths, Blood Thirsty Babes by TV On The Radio.

альбом нервировал очень, не знаю почему. но кавер на майкла джексона признан хотя бы интересным вообще нет. н е т.

Didn’t like it.

Like a bad trip on a Brazilian beach where the end is near. The cover does the music full justice.

The opening song may be the best song on the album, the others having some serious missteps, sour notes, overuse of repetition and that sort of thing. I'm trying to stay open to the experience, but I think it is just not my cup of tea. First album in the list where I was wishing it would end sooner.

Stan Getz did Brazilian better than the Brazilians.

You have got to be kidding me? 1 because I can't give it the zero it deserves.

Yay, more Brazillian music with random noises! This has strong Os Mutantes vibes. Tropicalia is the music played over the credits to some terrible Brazilian 60s beach movie. I guess everything Brazillian is a beach movie. Anunciacao probably has something to do with a religious reference based on the title and the constant repetition of Maria and the pseudoreligious music during the chorus. A Brazilian mentioning Copa Cabana? Unheard of! If this was American or British music no way it makes this list. I'm paranoid I'm going to listen to an extra song. Maybe I'm biased to music in English....so be it.

Didn't enjoy this and didn't finish it. Feel bad to say but just didn't sit with me at all.

Quite an intriguing album, i would have to say not really my thing though

Bad audio quality and not a fan of the music itself

BOOORING

Non fa per me

I’ve never heard of this artist or album before, but I really loved Os Mutantes, so I’m hoping that I’ll feel the same way about this album. Let’s get psychedelic! I’m trying to find a way to describe how I felt about this album that isn’t rude or demeaning, but I’m struggling to find the right words, so I’ll just say that this album wasn’t for me. I really didn’t care for the vocals at any point on this album, and there wasn’t really anything in the arrangements that I enjoyed much either. The string arrangements were okay, but they weren’t really that unique or noteworthy. The overall sound of this album was a bit of a mess; I think Caetano Veloso wanted to do create something interesting and unique, but I don’t think he ever really found his footing here. This is definitely not something I’d come back to, and with Os Mutantes on this list, I struggle to understand why this is on there as well.

You know when you’re in Lloret De Mar on your annual Wakes fortnight abroad and your skin is burning from too much sun, you have a bottle of red wine which is so good you take a bottle home and it tastes like ?&!*. Well there is no doubt that whilst you were feasting on Paella at Bodega Sa Xarxa music like this was pumping out of the systematic de altavoces and unfortunately suffers the same fate as the local plonk. Great whilst you were there but so is the Birdy Song. (I know this album is Brazilian and Portuguese applies but you get the picture) 1/5 4/3/25

Not my style. I'm not really into this kind of south-american music. I'm not sure I fully understand why because I like other kinds of exotic music... I probably also not helped by the fact that it's in a psychedelia fusion genre, and I already usually don't enjoy psychedelia normally. Standouts Clarice 1/5

Judging by the cover, it looks like Robert Smith of the Cure about to drop some acid. Instead, it's just some flaccid world music.

thank the LORD for a bad album so I can keep giving everything else a 4 in good conscience I thought it was getting good around Soy Loco Por Ti America, but then I realized that the portugese mafia were drilling a hole into my skull and brainwashing me with visions of the Girl from Ipanema to make me think it was good; maybe 1.5 yk Bossa Nova is cooked as a genre when the Kyle Gordon parody makes me want to gift Antonio Frankfurt a butterfly knife to the back of the neck

Tropicália which didn't appeal to me in the least, not even as background music.

I can get over my dislike of him, he's intolerable.

Yeah. No. Not for me. I think I forgot to turn off all foreign albums in my preferences for this project. Oh well, moving on.. 1/5

Not for me.

Nope. This is awful. A cacophony of noises. And I don’t like his voice. The whole thing just annoyed me

Not my thing

Nice rhythm and feeling to the songs but they feel very old in the mixing. That plus me not knowing the language and therefore the lyrics made me not like the album. Also what's up with the Philips product placement on the album?

I'm sure that this was very trendy back in the late 1960's, but now more than 50 years later, it sounds very dated.

A common problem with this style of 60s psychedelia across the board is that there're too many whiplash style changes within individual songs as if pure juxtaposition is an incredibly clever compositional technique and that eclecticism means doing lots of different things in quick succession. It just ends up being annoying, like listening to someone else flicking through radio stations trying to find something good and then changing as soon as you're settling and starting to enjoy it. Likewise, the production is overly full and distractingly busy - too much flute and the chamber pop arrangements are cloying. Learn to say no. The songs where they keep it simple and stick to one sound are ok, at least not actively unpleasant. Something about Portuguese saudade style melodic phrasing just doesn't work for me either, every line can't be an anti-climax. I've tried to like tropicalia so many times - on paper sounds so cool - but it just doesn't work for me at all. Favorite: Eles

Not for me... Poor singing and not much better music

I liked one song

It sounded quite nice but it's not for me.

diff language cant understand it 0/5

More Latin sunny music I just am sick and tired of after maximum one song. Afraid 1 star is enough.

Not really my thing, but still listened

What this list does, is keep you on your toes. A bunch of previous albums here made me think “jfc, why is this shit album on here?”. And every time there would be another album to make me think the same but stronger. Currently this one tops the charts. The ultimate what is the fucking point? NNN

1. tropicalia - 1 2. clarice - 2 3. me embora - 1 4.alegria alegria - 0 5. onde andaraz - 0 6. anuncicao - 0 7. zuperbacana - 0 8. util - 1 9. clara - 0 10. zoy loco - 0 11. ave maria - 0 12. elez - 0

Not for me

no thanks

A bit of a bore

Had a few nice sounds, and certainly not a long album. Not much else positive to say, certainly won't be one to remember.

Monotonous music where every track sounds the same.

Just no!!!!

What, and I cannot stress this enough, the actual fuck is this doing on the list. It starts off awfully and never really betters that. Truly dismal.

Not liking it

Not available on Apple Music

Not the right album on YouTube

Saaaaaaaiiii....

Tegen beter weten in, toch een kans gegeven. Zo zie je maar

Wat is Portugees toch een kut taal!

Wat een verschrikkelijk bossanova gezever

Oef....

Look, I certainly don't think that everything on the list needs to rock an above-the-equator, western-culture aesthetic. There SHOULD be some cultural representation from around the world. But this? This whole Tropicália thing? It's just a mess as a genre. It has the potential for brilliance but seems to ALWAYS slip sideways into cheesy tropes instead. I started this album with a whole lot of grace in my heart... which eroded away into bitter anger that I had to listen to a whole album of cheeseball drivel. Hard pass.

Zzzzzzz..... if I wanted to go to sleep, I'd consider this album.

Psychedelic bossanova? I am not the target audience for this.

Bleh. Gio was right.

I didn't care for it. It is better than 1 not really a 2. I will round down.

I tried. I really did. Sorry, but nope.

I listened all the way through! I won't give a 2nd listen. I can firmly say, this wasn't for me. It didn't even really make me think of mi hermoso Puerto Rico. He sounded like he was having fun. I wasn't. Maybe the sounds of the Dear Science led to greater expectations. Doesn't matter.... 1 1

This sounds like smtng old spanish women with thirty cats will enjoi

Couldn’t listen

What a steaming turd

Um, sorry... just no. I can't listen to this. It's not neccessarily bad, but so far from my own aesthetics that I couldn't get through even a cursory listen. 1/5

Oh, wow! Foreign albums are on here. So I have to listen to this garbage and a special band like Rammstein, a true transcendent pioneer, is not on the list currently!? Fuck that shit!

I couldn't get into this, I was hoping it would be interesting musically but yeah it's worse than the vocals.

I’m sure this was important in Brazil in the late 60’s, but I don’t know Portuguese and didn’t like the music all that much.

did nothing for me. not even good background noise.

Not great

I played the whole album through to try and figure out if any of it was worthy of the praise it gets on Wikipedia, but I couldnt find anything about it that appeals to me at all. 1/5

Meh wrapped meh with a blergh coating

Didn't enjoy.

61 Caetano Veloso 12 tracks. My hatred for people who are too fucking lazy to come up with a fucking name for their fucking album grows & grows with each new 1 found and this bloke is the current recipient of my ire. Even fucking Ed Sheeran names his fucking albums ffs! 1/5

No fue de mi agrado, no lo comprendo

samba samba

Душевно, романтично, хорошо!
