Reviews (page 5 of 7)
I like early caetano, but this is not one of his best. A good experience though.
I love Brazilian music but the instrumentation on this is just not for me unfortunately. That being said the good definitely outweighs the bad, but I found the opening track really irritating for some reason
Colorful, nice listen
Good! Liked it a lot.
New to me, this music was captivating at first, but its novelty wore off quickly. Pleasant to listen to, and good ambience for a lively party.
Nice enough, sort of Brazil's answer to Sargeant Pepper, but of course no where near as exciting
Yea it was alright
Interesting Brazilian Experimental Samba.
Don’t speak Spanish, but still got down
cool cover this is the kind of thing they have blasting on the sonos at those local cafes clarice onde andaras superbacana paisagem util clara
I would not actively seek this out, nor will I again but was refreshing to listen to.
I love getting stuff I've never heard of before, but while this was interesting at first, I got bored pretty fast. Didn't really love it.
Wasn't in the mood for this sorta album today. Not a slight on the album, it was a pleasant listen and the back half had some quality tunes with fun instrumentation. Fav track: Eles 2.5/5
Great vibe for a Mediterranean listen. Nice hazy production, lots of wide ranging influences blurring together. Little bit of a sinister edge to the pleasantries which I really liked too. Three and a half. Fave track: Eles
Pretty fun, especially the tracks with Gal Costa. Could imagine this playing over a nice summer evening while enjoying a cool drink with some friends. Not sure anything in particular I think is all time, but still a good listen. Fave track: Clara
Album 173 of 1001 Caetano Veloso - Caetano Veloso Rating : 3 / 5 A little Brazilian Psychedelic Rock/Samba. Can't get into the lyrics too much, as I didn't understand them, but the music was fine. Good to listen to as I went along with my work.
Something I think I’d hear on half volume, in a cafe somewhere.
3.75
Solid album. 3/5 Standouts: Tropicália, and oy loco por ti, América
Idk, I guess I listened to this but it was just... Spanish? Pleasant but whatever
Genuinely enjoyable
liked it alot was refreshing. love brazil music
Rather charming example of "Tropicalía". The opener with that name has impressive arrangements and instrumentation for instance... Am I *fully* charmed by this whole LP though? The jury's still out on this one... I might first need to get acquainted a little more to this sound and its peculiar wonders. Call it a cultural blind spot... And I might also need little more time to do this. As a consequence, this is going to my "waiting" list... Number of albums left to review: 473 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 250 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 120 (including this one) Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more essential to me): 155
Again, it’s hard to rate music from traditions one is unfamiliar with. I like the mix of Brazilian beats and 60s western sounds.
This really failed to move me in any meaningful way.
HL: "Tropicália", "Clarice", "Soy loco por ti, América", "Paisagem Útil" Thanks Brazil, very cool 😎 Think I liked other Brazilian offerings a little more (Milton Nascimento, Elis Regina). But there’s still much to enjoy about these helter-skelter, somewhat unfinished-sounding psych-samba songs 3.5 July 23, 2023
Different. Struggle to rate these as they are so far from what I know. It was interesting enough.
I can imagine this album as a soundtrack to a really cool film-noir style somewhat psychedelic semi-absurdist murder mystery tragicomedy. Not kidding. That's how I hear it. Fun!
This one flew by, and I was really excited to hear it as I'm always looking for new and unique songs but nothing really stood out to me as I was listening. Glad it's on here, but I'd put it at the lower end of "should be on here"
Love a good departure like this. Not sure how many Brazilian artists we've had, but from the '60s? This almost certainly has to be the first. Very cool, vibrant style, mixing some sounds that you might traditionally expect from Latin America with psych rock stuff, it works quite well. Even a sitar! I'm always a sucker for a sitar. Really good album, wish I could say I loved it more. But I'm glad we got to take this trip. Favorite tracks: No Dia Que, Anunciacao, Soy Loco Por Ti America, Eles. Album art: Love, love, love it. Excellent '60s art style. The portait photo in the middle isn't great, and it's made worse in contrast to the excellent, colorful art all around. Fantastic. 3.5/5
I'd probably like it more if I could understand the words
Caetano Veloso was definitely something new for me. Even though the album is in portuguese, I thought it was interesting that I could tell roughly the decade the music came from. I liked hearing something new and different from what I would choose for myself, but I didn't find any tracks that stood out for me to come back to again.
Warm and sunny latin stuff, with a bit of world fusion thrown in. Decent album
Good
Enjoyed listening but it isn't one of the greats or anything too special.
First encounter with tropicalia on the list, found this LP enjoyable if somewhat homogeneous melodically and instrumentation-wise. Don’t know if any of these tracks will stick with me long, but all of them were an enjoyable listen and that’s usually not the case in my experience.
It was ok but maybe a bit too repetitive.
very eclectic mix of sounds and genres, definitely a product of its time. fun album for background music. certainly an interesting and enjoyable listen.
Would be nice for a chill day at an Italian cafe.
very eclectic mix of sounds and genres, definitely a product of its time. fun album for background music. certainly an interesting and enjoyable listen.
Most likely, this is very good.
That is a cool cover. Would make a great poster on the wall of a record shop in 1969. You could only get more 60s psychedlic if it glowed under a black light and had a pot leaf on it. Anyway, enjoyed the listen and the Brazilian vibes. Every now and then it felt like there was a moodier, darker undertone to a tune and I really liked that aspect. Again though, just chill with trying to ask me to name a single song off of this, alright? Not gonna happen.
I like the genre blending but it feels a bit slow and boring at times. 3.5/5 FS: Tropicalia, Anunciacao, Supercabana, America
Average Latin vibe album
Disclaimer: I do not speak Portuguese. Really pleasant listen. Seems cool and important. Some genuinely gorgeous moments here.
I mean... Brazilians just know, how to do this kind of music.
Upbeat and a decent listen.
Better than I initially thought, and actually pretty meaningful
Pretty cool. Generally enjoyable, creeped towards a 4 once or twice but by the end I was happy to move on.
3.5/5
Super average
not my style but well done
Pretty good.
In an effort to catch up this is the first in a series of express reviews: Brazillian Donovan. Listenable. 3.5
Not bad
Wel leuk
- Never heard of Caetano Veloso before - Not my usual type of music but I enjoyed it - Thought some of the tracks towards the end were a bit weaker - Mad album cover - Fav songs: Tropicália; Alegria, Alegria; Onde Andaras
This was the definition of a middle of the road album. I didn't hate it, but I never found a way to get into it either.
het is aan het regenen buiten maar dit gaf me toch een zonnig gevoel.
Smooth
fun
caetano nao é meu mpb favorito mas é ok
I enjoyed this, something different, sounded fresh.
I wish I understood Portuguese for Caetano has so much to tell. Soave silky laid back arrangements with a Tender vocal perfomance. In the long run the style is kinda to exotic to me to make me tune in any time soon. Special music for special occasions. 2.5
so tropical
How refreshing to hear psychedelic 60s music that didn’t come from the US or UK! An intriguing combination of bossa nova, pop and rock.
I liked the music here, hate to mark it down as I don't understand the lyrics as that's on me, but rating based on how much I enjoy.
Fun 60s pop. Enjoyed it but doubt it'll hit my regular rotation.
Charming bossonova tunes
this is pretty cool and funky. me when i dont speak portuguese. best tracks: alegria alegria, anunciacao, clara
It’s ok
I almost gave this a 4 before I was violently offended by the Billie Jean cover. Otherwise I enjoyed listening but don’t need to hear it again
I’d only ever heard one song before by him and that was only because Beirut covered it, so was nice to dive a bit deeper in. Felt strange listening to pure sunshine when it was lashing it down and very grey, but it was a nice listen nonetheless. (Much prefer Elza Soares in terms of Brazilian musicians. She’s a total legend. Music that sounds like it’s been written by someone 1/4 her age!) Extra credit due to him being a key part in the left wing battle against the far right Brazilian govt back in the 60s/70s. But, I then found out he was also a wrang’un.
My Brazilian colleague says this guy is the most famous musician in Brazil, mad that we don't hear of him at all (or maybe I'm not cultured enough). It was a nice change, light and breezy, but it didn't spark a desire to keep listening.
Nice background music. Think the final song was the most interesting. Like with the previous non English album, it's hard to really appreciate.... But that's my problem
It’s good music quite entertaining but it dragged a little at points and the language barrier makes it a little harder to enjoy but it’s good though. 3/5
It was an interesting mix of styles.
like it. no idea what it is on about but its cool.
diet tropicola
I enjoyed this album, at one point I felt like I was in a 60s/70s spy movie, I think I'd listen again as relaxation music
It’s a good album, I’ll say that much
not really to my taste, but quite decent
I enjoyed this much more than I'd expected to. Some parts sounded like Indian music, some like psychedelic pop interesting mix.
Mellow and pleasant. Feels like a nice tropical vacation.
No es de mi estilo. Pero bueno .... 3
I did like this. Needs another few listens for a final opinion I suppose. Didn't blow me away. 🤷
Bosa nova. Aburrido.
this looks scary i'm not listening to that upd: i couldn't find it so i guess it's ok
Listen again
A Brazilian album that created 'Tropicália', an artistic movement in response to military dictatorship and The Beatles. This apparently led to Cartano Veloso being exiled from Brazil. My Portuguese is sub-par, so I wouldn't have picked any of this up from the record, but did find it an enjoyable and eclectic mix of genres, and distinctly Brazilian. Rating: 3/5 Playlist track: Tropicália Date listened: 07/09/22
A really intriguing listen, kind of trippy, very much of its time. Veloso's vocals are smooth as butter, really lovely. Fave songs: Soy loco por ti, Eles, América, Alegria, Alegria, Paisagem Útil, Superbacana
Brazilian, beautiful voice. Standout is "Alegria, Alegria"
Worth noting that I love all sorts of Brazilian music and that Caetano Veloso is a total legend. Not my favorite album of his though
The album cover looks almost exactly like that Donovan shit. Will it sound the same? Let's find out... And nup it's South American salsa type stuff. The upbeat songs were fun. The softer stuff left me cold but when it got going it was pretty cool. no doubt the Brazilians get really annoying to this in YouTube comments haha. 3/5.
Very psychedelic. I like the flourishes of other music, as well. It's a quick album, captures the era, just didn't really do much for me one way or the other. Favorite tracks: "Onde Andaras", "Soy Loco Por Ti America"
interesting effort, I like the instrumentation. this is not why veloso is famous for tho, at least not here in México
old school brazillian music
Enjoyable Brazilian album.
One of those that I enjoyed whilst it was on but realistically will never listen to again.
This isn't bad considering that this genre isn't really my thing. He gets an extra star for trying to look like a serial killer on the album cover. :-)
Portuguese sounds like Russian and Brazilian music is all about vibes. That's all I've got, though the stronger cuts won me over in the end. I'm pretty sure I'm missing something, as this sounds about as dynamic as modern across-the-sea copies I've heard.
Nice music, enjoyed the listen
I have liked most of the Brazilian fusion but this one didn't work as well for me. I find the ballads less interesting than the more upbeat fusion other Brazilians brought to the table.
I liked this. I imagined myself lazing on the beach in Rio, drinking cocktails whilst this played in the background at a nearby bar.
Even with a cover reminiscent of Sunshine Superman era Donovan and the Wikipedia informed knowledge that this is an early example of Tropicalia, I still didn't really know what to expect. I was more than pleasantly surprised though. A conglomeration of styles from bossa nova/samba through psychedelia and onto mid-60s folk stylings, I thoroughly enjoyed this. And, at a few minutes over half an hour, it didn't outstay it's welcome.
It's fine but I don't connect with it much, I am completely ambivalent.
Solid album. The music is Interesting, and the artist is talented. This was my first time listening to Caetano.
Given the write up on allmusic.com which promised a progressive marriage between Brazilian pop music and the psychedelic sounds that were taking north america and great britain by storm at the time. I believe I read something along the lines of a "Brazilian Sgt. Pepper's" But what I mostly got was a pretty standard Bossa Nova pop album that was a staple of the jazz scene at the time. I was expecting a psychedelic trip along the lines that Os Mutantes offers. There are some good, listeneable tunes here and the album closer; Eles does have a nice sitar intro , pulsating bass guitar and some cool psychedelic organ flourishes and interesting guitar. Overall not a bad album just not the experience I was hoping for. 3 stars
Jolly background
Because the Group ratings link disappears when I review a song I think about what I'm going to say and then open the Group ratings in a new window to see what others have said but only if I already know what I'm going to say and well this is the first time that I had these exact words in my mind. "This was a perfectly pleasant listen, but without knowing any Portuguese it kinda slid off my consciousness without making too much of a mark. Fave track "Tropicalia" - though that just might be because I was paying attention to track one before going back to working and letting it play in the background ¯\_(ツ)_/¯"
Nice, but a little repetitive after the 3rd aong

Very upbeat, sonically a bit different from what I would typically enjoy. The listen-through went by without too much thought, but it wasn't bad.
No clever quips about this album, the album is straightforward and dare it be said 'beautiful'. The energy associated with Brazil and the scene that is the Carnevale is rather subdued brought into a more a personal light, and that is a good thing here. Vocals are smooth and seemingly disciplined, as well as the jazzy arrangements that still invoke the spirit of the Copacabana-craze just without the noise.
For me this is quite fun mood music which is probably doing it a big injustice but it’s Jody not my type of thing. Pleasant enough and exotic sounding. But I can’t get excited about it.
Breath of fresh air. I should really listen to Brazilian music more.
Audição precisa. Reconheci alguns sucessos.
It's fun as fuck. Can't understand a fucking thing though. It's cool though.
I guess I'm glad I listened to this one but it really didn't do anything for me.
I am not familiar with CAETANO VELOSO and his debut solo album CAETANO VELOSO, because I’m not been exposed to Brazilian music. After listening to CAETANO VELOSO, this album is pleasant to listen to, but it is difficult to judge a foreign language album where one does not understand that is being said. The reviewer can only judge the beauty of the music and how the vocals flow and hopefully, one can get the gist of what is being expressed. I can appreciate the Gaelic beauty of songs from CLANNAD, in 1001 Albums, I was previously exposed to South African MIRIAM MAKEBA, where I had the same problem trying to evaluate a foreign language album (at least, MIRIAM MAKEBA had some English songs which I could evaluate along with the foreign language songs) In 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, CAETANO VELOSO - CAETANO VELOSO, is the only album listed. Jessus miten vihasen näkönen kurppa kannessa! Mut siis hei täähän oli todella raikasta. Kiva kuunnella jotain muutakin kun perus US- ja UK-poprockii. Hyvää psykekurkoiluu ja tribaliajoo. 3/5 tykkäsin!
Hmmh, tätä on ennenkin yritetty. Tykkään tosi paljon tunnelmasta, kuten melkein kaikessa latinomusassa ja sitä bossan vetovoimaa tässäkin on. Mut sit tää on paikoin jotenkin vähän liian vaikeeta, vaikka yllätyksellisyys on kyl kivaa.
Brazilian 60s pop. Not bad really.
Fun little collection of tropicalismo music with some toe tapping tracks. Great voice and use of mixed tempos and keys.
appreciated it but very forgettable
IDK....
Never heard of Caetano Veloso before, but I recently (in the past couple years) learned about the Tropicalia genre. It's great. I learned about it when I got into a band called Chcano Batman. Of course there isn't a way for this [points to self] dumb American to relate to the lyrics. But this record, like the others I've heard in the genre, is a really nice blend of singer/songwriter, psychedelia, and pop. All good things. And, from what I know, the tropicalia movement was a fusion of art and revolutionary politics, so that's not half bad either. The standouts on the record are the horns and percussion.
Of the "not qualified to judge this because it represents a culture of which I am ignorant" genre - this is one of my favorites so far. It's simple. It's happy. Didn't hate it on a Monday morning.
2022.01.04
1960s pop meets Brazil. I found the story behind this to be interesting - the Brazilian government felt so threatened by this music that the singer was arrested and exiled? Crazy.
Fun
Interesting international album. Enjoyed.
6/10 F.t.: Eles
It's was fine
A nice surprise
J'aime la musique. Mais un peu plus explose que je pensais 3.75
This didn't sound like anything special to me. 6/10
Interesting
No my favorite type of music. But objectively not bad!
Nice to hear some Sinatra sequel music from Brazil, interesting to listen to it and it's influences
This is just okay? I dunno, usually I dig fusions of psychedelic and other country's music, but this one fell a little flat for me.
I get why it's on the list, but it didn't really grab me. Best track: Alegria, Alegria
6.5/10 v good
Mellow, Interesting. Cool vibe
Het Portugees is wel een taal die mooi op muziek staat. De zomerse, Braziliaanse klanken waren wel oké. Maar geen supergoed album
I know very little in this genre so it’s a bit hard to rate. Sounds like Brazilian lounge music. It’s enjoyable.
Hmmm... it gets me in the mood for a holiday
psychedlic soft rock brazilian jazz. reminds me of grainy film montages from old movies
This was alright but seems like ‘pop Brazilian music’
Enjoyable, glad I was introduced to it, but I have a sneaky suspicion I'll never listen to it again on purpose. Pleasant enough and probably just not my overall cup of tea. Deserves to be on the 1,001 albums list for certain.
No full source
Pretty fun album. I’d love to see the makings of with all the orchestral pieces
Sound was good, even if I don't (unfortunately) speak the language.
This grew and grew on me. A real smorgasbord of sound. Not quite enough to fully hook me in but I’ll give it another look for sure.
Trippy rock-centric music from Brazil. This psychedelic rock album was created during an artistic movement period in 1960's Brazil, which gives it a unique sound. Although I have no idea what the lyrics are - because I don't speak Portuguese - I can still appreciate the vibe of the music.
It was nice, not for me. All in Spanish, but sets the groundwork for a lot of Latin artists to come
Three days since I listened to this and too much has happened for me to say anything other than it was fun and nothing like the Landfill Psychedelia album art suggested. That's all I've got.
Pleasant and interesting, but not something a that’s gonna really draw me back anytime soon
Brazilian pop music. Catchy!
Fun, experimental, and revolutionary sound, suffers from the inability to understand due to a large portion of it being in Portuguese.
me like psychedelic me no like latin music
Sounds like psychedelic version of music my grandma would listen to
You never realize internet song translation is a semi-organized inexact science until you're looking translations up for a non-English language album. "Alegria, Alegria" has some spirit to it. Superbacana starts to pick up and immediately ends. Soy Loco Por Ti America touches interestingly on the conditions of an unstable Brazil in the 60s (I think). 5/10
This was a perfectly pleasant listen, but without knowing any Portuguese it kinda slid off my consciousness without making too much of a mark. Fave track "Tropicalia" - though that just might be because I was paying attention to track one before going back to working and letting it play in the background ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Funky.
en fuego
Don't know at all Caetano Veloso... Top track: Soy Loco Por Tí, América
fun
Not bad
Very enjoyable, fun and upbeat, "Superbacana" and "Soy Loco Por Ti America" struck me the most!
Didn't understand a word of the lyrics, but it didn't terribly bother me. The vibe of the various tracks are diverse, and combined with the short playtime, makes sure that it doesn't bore you at any time.
Didn't really care for this but appreciate it was decent, just not for me
I wasn't a huge fan of this album... yes, it can be hard to connect emotionally to music sometimes that isn't in a language you understand, but that isn't the reason. There are plenty of albums or songs that I haven't understood a word of, but I've absolutely adored. There was nothing in particular I didn't like; I just thought, in general, the songs were a bit boring. They didn't interest me whatsoever, and the style remained completely the same throughout the album. The vocals were well executed, but again, absolutely nothing special in my opinion. I don't have any favourite tracks for this album; not much stood out to me at all.
This sounds like something you'd hear in a Tarintino film, it has that mix of old and cool that fits movie asthetic. The music is interesting to listen to, but I have no idea what the lyrics are doing. It was a decent listen. But I probably won't be back.
This one was a bit disappointing because I'm a nerd for swingin' 60s lounge music. The cover hinted at that with a more psychedelic feel, and obviously a bossa influence. And... the instrumentation and approach to arrangements is all there.... I personally love when strings are tastefully used alongside rock band lineup. But, mostly the album is just disorganized and does not deliver the potential that the instrumentation presents. There are cool songs, but as a whole it's very scattered. I'm also all for quirky production decisions (such as the high reverb vocals) but they go overboard and it does the album no favors. I would call this album an interesting experiment that definitely does not hold up like any album on this list should.
I already don't like Bob Dylan normally and this felt like that but in a different language, the issue being that I wish I could understand it so I could appreciate the story telling
While it might not have caught me, albums like this are why I'm doing this challenge.
i would not listen again
this was fun
Not much fun here. A few pleasant passages, but mostly annoying.
I'm the wrong audience for this album. I don't speak whatever language this was in but I generally like Latin music for it's vibrancy. In this case, the majority of tracks were lacking this element and I couldn't connect.
Originally gave a 4, but have heard better MBP since then. 3.5!
Yeah he’s a pedo and that’s absolutely hideous but I don’t do automatic negative reviews based off the person alone. I try to find something redeemable to the material, even when he isn’t. But this was just some boring easy listening adjacent dross. Pretty easy to bin it.
Previously unknown. I enjoyed it but it couldn't hold my attention for the whole album.
Another whole album of "meh". It's pleasant enough to listen to as a background track on a summers evening, but not exactly setting the world alight. Maybe that's because I'm listening to it sixty years too late... Maybe. Anyway, on another note, the album art makes the guy look like a killer in a late sixties Hollywood thriller.
I love this sort of album, you have no idea what they are saying or how you pronounce the words but you manage to sing along anyway. This one sort of just wisped away on the breeze though. It was enjoyable but nothing really stood out.
2.3 Felt like I was listening to Brazilian elevator music. Pretty dull experience, nothing really exciting going on in any track. A very long 34 minutes. Gave up at Ave Maria.
Exotic elevator music.
Nö
Very different. I think it will need a few listens before I can decide
Meh. Just didn’t leave an impression. Idk
It starts well with Tropicalila which is a fun track - but slightly looses steam/ inspiration thereafter. Add to the fact that the guys 2nd wife was only 13 when he married her aged 40 - and I'm out.
Coming in with potentially the creepiest album cover so far, by this point favela fatigue, world-music weariness, salsa somniference, bossanova boredom is real. 'Superbacana' ('Massive Backhander') is straight from the scripts of the Fast Show - "Um, instante maestro! Super-homem, Superflit, Supervinc, Superist, Superviva, Supershell, Superquentão, Super-homem." Sminky pinky! There's also lots of Eurovision vibes - 'Tropicalia's "da da da" and then "ba da da da da" and so on. It seems that the psychedelic touches or touches trying to crossover with Indian music, and other experimental touches are very cursory and often ham-fisted. Indian tabla and sitar feature at the outset of 'Eles' but no real attempt is made to integrate it to the song. A generous 2, because I like some of the more trad folky touches
As someone that doesn’t know the language I can only rate on music and to my untrained ears it does nothing noteworthy.
2,9/5
Might be okay, might suck - can’t tell because I don’t know what he’s singing about.
Tropicalia fails to translate well in gloomy Manchester
Didn't connect with this one after a couple of listens. I can enjoy music in a language I don't understand but I feel like I'm missing something with this one
Last track reminds me of Atomic Zombie Smasher
My short coming, but not being able to understand the lyrics lowers it for me. Additionally, too psychedelic & artistic for me. 0 songs added to playlist.
Mhhh didn't really appeal, maybe it was the language barrier
was okay
2/5
Well executed, but didn’t appeal to me as much as other international albums I’ve enjoyed over the past several months. The spare instrumentation lacked much to make me come back. 1 listen Favorite Track: Tropicalia
Another genre just not for me, I did listen to the whole thing this time though
Don't have a lot of context for this one and I don't know what to make of it. It could have a really interesting story but as someone that doesn't speak the language it kind of gives vibes of someone in a country at a time where they were being bombarded with American music making their version of it. Doesn't have much of a lasting impact on me
Was the music bad? It was fine. Did this guy sleep with a 13 year old girl and eventually marry her? Yes, it would seem he did.
Whilst listening to this I felt like I was listening to Latin circus music and not in a good way. Some of the songs felt relatively chill and pleasant, but overall the album felt slightly weird and I can't say I'll be rushing back to listen to it. Unless of course I'm sat on a beach in South America with a cocktail in hand…
Throw this album on the substantial and ever-growing "doesn't belong on this list" pile.
Interesting
Meh.
Not 1 just for the latin/afro elements
While I like the sound of portuguese in songs, I am not a fan of Bossa Nova. Favorite Songs: Superbacana
Fun, but one and done
Very bland and not a lot going on.
It is a cool sounding record that I doubt very much I'd revisit any time soon. Honestly, I'm not sure it's "great", but it is interesting. This is one of those records that I never would have went looking for on my own but am glad I heard once.
no one needed this. 2 *
Latin music does nothing for me
Just not for me
This was mildly interesting, but really no different than any of the other latin/ salsa/ bossa nova stuff I’ve heard. It was ok but I don’t know enough about the genre, and I certainly don’t know enough to know why it’s important.
Это имеет место быть и даже кому-то, наверное, нравится (бразильцам?), но я не из их числа.
Didn't do much for me again. Not bad at all, just not my kind of thing.
An interesting listen. Perhaps not in the mood but didn't really land with me. 2/5
Not for me I suspect.
There's a little bossa nova and a little Caribbean bounciness, but it dips a little too much into psychedelia for my taste. It's not bad music, and I'm glad it's on the list, but there wasn't anything in here I'm dying to show to someone else. If someone were to say "Hey, have you heard of this guy?" I'm thinking "Yeah, but no." My rating: 2/5
(3/7) no consistent vibes
I really wanted to enjoy this album, but on first listen, it didn't fire. I will listen again.
I'm sure Caetano is a great guy. But his music just doesn't do it for me. 2*
#urlaubsrezension Noch nie von gehört, also lustige Entdeckung. Ein wenig seltsam, insgesamt nicht meine Musik aber mach ich bestimmt irgendwann noch Mal an.
Someone called him the Brazilian Donovan, and that comparison fits pretty well. It has that same mellow, vibe with a slightly psychedelic edge. An interesting listen with some charm.
I'm completely unaware of this artist. This was interesting to listen to, though I'm not sure it's great. And then I saw a few reviews on this site for this album, which referenced the fact that this guy has been accused of pedophilia. So that makes this all a bit of a bummer.
Competently played Spanish guitar (mostly chordal) with Spanish lyrics and indfifferent recording quality. OK as background music but nothing to get my teeth into.
Like a Brazilian Donovan, but not as original. Maria Bethania is OKish, but otherwise…
I find it very difficult to judge this type of music, I suppose the bottom line is did I like it and the answer is not really.
Artiste inconnu.
2 sterren.
Viva Brasil!
It’s nice to see a non english album in here. Lots of fun layering but it didn’t always work and ended up being unpleasant. Seems like the type of music I would pretend to love if I was an insufferable man who thinks he’s far more culturally informed than you are.
It's great that there's some diversity within the list as it has felt very, dare I say, white and western at times, however I find it hard to connect with lyrics of another language. It's both the fact that I have absolutely no clue what's being sung about and also find it hard to find the songs memorable when the words mean nothing to me and can't stick in my head.
I approached this album with an open mind, but ultimately it didn’t resonate with me. I tried focusing on the melodies and instrumentals, yet there wasn’t much that held my interest, including the vocals. What can I say, lounge music really isn’t my vibe. Maybe it would appeal more in the right setting—perhaps while relaxing with a cognac in hand at a lounge. It’s simply not a style that aligns with my overall taste
Easy listening, easy to forget.
That was fun. I have no desire to revisit but glad for the listen.
2/5 - Really not for me. For me to like non-English language music it's got to really stand out to me and this didn't, the music itself wasn't bad though.
Didn't get the lyrics, nothing together grip me, liked the composition mostly
Not my thing.
My Rating 2.4. Not for me. I have enjoyed other Latin selections on this list but this one fails to impress.
this was easy listening but I wouldn't listen to it again
Dull
Fine to stick on in the background but nothing really remarkable here 2.5*
Very pleasant Brazilian album. No single track stood out to me. 2.5 stars, rounding down.
Brassy and dull. Nothing about the album stood out to me and it wasn’t very enjoyable.
The opening track, and closing tracks are fun. The rest of the album was a boring late Christmas gift. Favorite Track: "Else".
Sometimes an album hits you on the wrong day. This was not a great pick for Xmas Eve Eve. Going back to it, it's a better listen. I don't think I'll go back to it, but it has its moments. Probably pushing 2.5
Didn’t really care for it.
it's convenient to not have to engage with the "well it might be a pedophile but at least he makes good music" mental gymnastics because i thought this album sucked. caetano veloso was a chief artist involved in the tropicália movement which was notable both for its contributions to brazilian pop music and also as cultural backlash against the US-backed dictatorship of the time, so objectively speaking this *is* a notable album, but to me the "artistic cannibalism" mentality of tropicália (which on its own is questionable imho) is on terrible display. the usage of the sitar for instance in "eles" which was topical in the west at the time because of the beetles sounds *so* bad here. points for historical notability but that's it.
It’s cool music, but it just doesn’t do much for me.
2/5
I had a minute in 2005 where I listened to other Tropicalia bands like Os Mutantes a lot, but never ventured further. This is ok, a little Muzak-y in places, but there were occasional moments where the cheese meets fuzz guitars or other bits that grab my interest. Don't think I'll explore further...
If they do a Brazilian version of Austin Powers, this would make for a good soundtrack.
Day707 - now i know i don’t like psychedelic samba so i got got that going for me
Not my thing
this was enjoyable and that's all i got because i won't be listening again. i made that decision before reading the 'personal life' section of his wikipedia but that certainly didn't help
I thought I found this on Apple Music but it had a different album cover, so upon a quick bit of research I found out that he in fact has 2 self titled albums but I had to go to Spotify for the 1001 album (the one with Caetano looking like a serial killer on the front). Spotify seems to want to give you the worst listening experience possible to encourage a 4 month free trial so much so, that when I pressed play on the album, after the 30 seconds ad, it played the 3rd track first, so I then played track 1 and I was away. Then ‘A Little More Blue’ started playing, a song where the title is sung no less than 32 times, and there seems little besides and it dawned on me that there is no such song on the album realising there is some random shuffle that can’t be turned off on Spotify without paying; I managed to queue all the songs and got through but at great personal cost. Caetano, maybe this is not your fault but I hold you responsible. 2/5.
All things considered, very forgettable. The tracks blended together and it wasn't entertaining enough to catch my interest.
I get the comparison to psychedelic music but here that aspect is rather subdued against the bossa nova foundation. It just couldn't make any lasting impression on me. The sitar on the last song sounded way off.
How can you not love an album with a cover like that? Sixties psychedelia is definitely right up my street, but I've not come across this particular gem before. A bit like Os Mutantes-lite, there are shades of Love in there too - it's an interesting slice of psych-tropicalia with the emphasis on pop, which, as with so many South American albums of the era, manages to craft something quite cool out of sounds which would sound utterly naff in any other context. Ultimately, there are no out-and-out bangers here, and you feel the whole exercise was to establish Veloso as some kind of crooning superstar rather than create groundbreaking music - the vocals are upfront and centre stage throughout. A pleasant listen, something of psychedelic curio, mostly cheesy listening rather than essential listening, and not something I'll return to often.
Bland
I liked the psychedelic elements of this. It had some classic Brazilian bossanova in there, which I can do without.
Not my cup of tea. Hard to muscle through this album.
I guess this is only on the list because it's Brazilian? For the most part, it sounds like any number of albums from this time period, nothing stands out particularly. That said, there are a few decent tracks. All in all though a pretty unremarkable album.
I have nothing against this album, except I can’t understand the lyrics and it’s not to my taste. My cultural inadequacies aside, there’s a reasonable tempo and vibe to it but it doesn’t captivate me. In an ideal world I would understand it and be able to mark it properly.
This could be the most refined lyrical genius known to man but through my dumb English ears the music doesnt particularly inspire me which is a shame. Its not so much its dated its just not the kind of acoustic guitair I enjoy and more of a cultural novelty which I fail to appreciate. I also feel this probably lead some musical innovation but to my ears it was light touch so didnt really shine in this regard either. Nothing wrong with the music though and the craft.
Meh, it was ok for the right setting I guess. 2.5/5
I can vibe with this for a little while. A LITTLE while
I really don’t know what to do with something like this. Was it unique? Sure. Did it sound good? Yeah, no complaints. Did it grab me by the gonads? No really. I mean I have no frame of reference to judge music coming out of Brazil in the 1960s. So yeah…it was fine.
I liked parts of this but felt uneven to me. Almost like the back half wasn’t fully conceived. Sounds like this was a pretty important album for the country at the time it was released and I’m tempted to round up for that fact alone…BUT I didn’t really enjoy it. 2.25/5
I wasn't expecting this looking at the cover. It was at least interesting. I didn't love it but it was something else.
Didn't do much for me.
I am sure in 1968, in some rich guy's dark basement tiki room, with a mid-century bar, and guests by invite only, this record was in constant rotation. Now I just picture it in the dusty 99 cent bin.
Very weird mysterious latin music. Parts of it sounded like psych rock, other parts sounded like Tarantino soundtracks if Quentin was from Rio De Janeiro, and some parts were similar to weird wave Probably not going back to it, but interesting listen nonetheless.
I'm all for these fun and unique albums, but this combination just didn't hit it for me. His vocals didn't really please me either. But I'm happy that this was included and that I got to listen to it.
Ok
I’m always excited when an albums run time is short. But then it’s always the albums that are short that drag on and on and seem to take an eternity to get through. I aged 7 years in listening to this 35 minute album. This album blows.
Technically fine, just doesn't click decades later
Not something I would listen to again.
I'm just not into this Caetano Veloso album. I think it's mostly just a style of music I find kind of irritating rather than it being outright bad, but it was definitely a struggle for me. 2.5 stars.
Yeahhh… Caetano Ve-no-go.
Started off pretty irritating, turned out okay. Probably wouldn't explore it again in the future.
Rating: 4/10 Nah.
Same indie folk album but in another language. They are all equally mehhhh
The last twelve or so albums I’ve received have been lackluster meh albums from bands I’ve never heard of (which would fulfill the purpose of why I’m listening through all of these if they weren’t all meh), or they’re the second or third best albums of bands I kind of know but never really liked. In other words, I’m going through a dry spell. This didn’t fish me out of that.
Maybe if I understood Portuguese this would be more interesting.
Not really my thing, but I understand how some could like it
I've never been a huge world music guy, and this wasn't the greatest. Mostly forgettable, boring. I've heard other stuff, like Fela Kuti, that was much more pleasant and memorable. This just didn't hit anything notable for me. Not terrible, and again I can see how people like it. But didn't do anything for me.
Not convinced I found the original
It was fine. I love bossa nova but this album was just okay.
I wanted to like it, but it failed to meet my expectations. Not an outright bad album, just something I'll never listen to again.
