Meh. Just didn’t leave an impression. Idk
It starts well with Tropicalila which is a fun track - but slightly looses steam/ inspiration thereafter. Add to the fact that the guys 2nd wife was only 13 when he married her aged 40 - and I'm out.
Coming in with potentially the creepiest album cover so far, by this point favela fatigue, world-music weariness, salsa somniference, bossanova boredom is real. 'Superbacana' ('Massive Backhander') is straight from the scripts of the Fast Show - "Um, instante maestro! Super-homem, Superflit, Supervinc, Superist , Superviva, Supershell, Superquentão , Super-homem." Sminky pinky! There's also lots of Eurovision vibes - 'Tropicalia's "da da da" and then "ba da da da da" and so on. It seems that the psychedelic touches or touches trying to crossover with Indian music, and other experimental touches are very cursory and often ham-fisted. Indian tabla and sitar feature at the outset of 'Eles' but no real attempt is made to integrate it to the song. A generous 2, because I like some of the more trad folky touches
As someone that doesn’t know the language I can only rate on music and to my untrained ears it does nothing noteworthy.

Don't have a lot of context for this one and I don't know what to make of it. It could have a really interesting story but as someone that doesn't speak the language it kind of gives vibes of someone in a country at a time where they were being bombarded with American music making their version of it. Doesn't have much of a lasting impact on me
Was the music bad? It was fine. Did this guy sleep with a 13 year old girl and eventually marry her? Yes, it would seem he did.
Whilst listening to this I felt like I was listening to Latin circus music and not in a good way. Some of the songs felt relatively chill and pleasant, but overall the album felt slightly weird and I can't say I'll be rushing back to listen to it. Unless of course I'm sat on a beach in South America with a cocktail in hand…
Throw this album on the substantial and ever-growing "doesn't belong on this list" pile.

It is a cool sounding record that I doubt very much I'd revisit any time soon. Honestly, I'm not sure it's "great", but it is interesting. This is one of those records that I never would have went looking for on my own but am glad I heard once.

This was mildly interesting, but really no different than any of the other latin/ salsa/ bossa nova stuff I’ve heard. It was ok but I don’t know enough about the genre, and I certainly don’t know enough to know why it’s important.

There's a little bossa nova and a little Caribbean bounciness, but it dips a little too much into psychedelia for my taste. It's not bad music, and I'm glad it's on the list, but there wasn't anything in here I'm dying to show to someone else. If someone were to say "Hey, have you heard of this guy?" I'm thinking "Yeah, but no." My rating: 2/5

Someone called him the Brazilian Donovan, and that comparison fits pretty well. It has that same mellow, vibe with a slightly psychedelic edge. An interesting listen with some charm.
I'm completely unaware of this artist. This was interesting to listen to, though I'm not sure it's great. And then I saw a few reviews on this site for this album, which referenced the fact that this guy has been accused of pedophilia. So that makes this all a bit of a bummer.
Competently played Spanish guitar (mostly chordal) with Spanish lyrics and indfifferent recording quality. OK as background music but nothing to get my teeth into.

I find it very difficult to judge this type of music, I suppose the bottom line is did I like it and the answer is not really.

Het begint met ultiem schelle kutgeluiden in het rechteroor en ik wil eigenlijk meteen stoppen. Gelukkig wordt dit daarna wel minder. Vage shit. Ik vind het wel soort van geinig, maar dit blijft bij mij echt een eenmalig kijkje in het rariteitenkabinet denk ik. Als je de vrouw met de baard eenmaal hebt gezien geloof je het daarna wel. Bij track 9 meen ik Astrud Gilberto ook te horen, maar het is een andere vervelend zingende vrouw. Een wat rare mengeling van stijlen, een wat vage oude opname. Het zijn ook niet per se stijlen die heel erg aan mij besteed zijn, al heb ik me in deze lijst wel eens laten verrassen. Sfeervol is dit album wel, verder niet heel levensveranderend. Wel leuk om weer eens een artiest te treffen die ik nog niet eerder heb gehad! Jaja, ook dat mag gezegd worden. 2 sterren.

It’s nice to see a non english album in here. Lots of fun layering but it didn’t always work and ended up being unpleasant. Seems like the type of music I would pretend to love if I was an insufferable man who thinks he’s far more culturally informed than you are.
It's great that there's some diversity within the list as it has felt very, dare I say, white and western at times, however I find it hard to connect with lyrics of another language. It's both the fact that I have absolutely no clue what's being sung about and also find it hard to find the songs memorable when the words mean nothing to me and can't stick in my head.
Whatever merits this album may have are overshadowed in my eyes by how much of a fucking creepy pedophile Veloso himself is. Ew. Just ew.
I approached this album with an open mind, but ultimately it didn’t resonate with me. I tried focusing on the melodies and instrumentals, yet there wasn’t much that held my interest, including the vocals. What can I say, lounge music really isn’t my vibe. Maybe it would appeal more in the right setting—perhaps while relaxing with a cognac in hand at a lounge. It’s simply not a style that aligns with my overall taste

Sometimes an album hits you on the wrong day. This was not a great pick for Xmas Eve Eve. Going back to it, it's a better listen. I don't think I'll go back to it, but it has its moments. Probably pushing 2.5

it's convenient to not have to engage with the "well it might be a pedophile but at least he makes good music" mental gymnastics because i thought this album sucked. caetano veloso was a chief artist involved in the tropicália movement which was notable both for its contributions to brazilian pop music and also as cultural backlash against the US-backed dictatorship of the time, so objectively speaking this *is* a notable album, but to me the "artistic cannibalism" mentality of tropicália (which on its own is questionable imho) is on terrible display. the usage of the sitar for instance in "eles" which was topical in the west at the time because of the beetles sounds *so* bad here. points for historical notability but that's it.

I had a minute in 2005 where I listened to other Tropicalia bands like Os Mutantes a lot, but never ventured further. This is ok, a little Muzak-y in places, but there were occasional moments where the cheese meets fuzz guitars or other bits that grab my interest. Don't think I'll explore further...
If they do a Brazilian version of Austin Powers, this would make for a good soundtrack.

this was enjoyable and that's all i got because i won't be listening again. i made that decision before reading the 'personal life' section of his wikipedia but that certainly didn't help
I thought I found this on Apple Music but it had a different album cover, so upon a quick bit of research I found out that he in fact has 2 self titled albums but I had to go to Spotify for the 1001 album (the one with Caetano looking like a serial killer on the front). Spotify seems to want to give you the worst listening experience possible to encourage a 4 month free trial so much so, that when I pressed play on the album, after the 30 seconds ad, it played the 3rd track first, so I then played track 1 and I was away. Then ‘A Little More Blue’ started playing, a song where the title is sung no less than 32 times, and there seems little besides and it dawned on me that there is no such song on the album realising there is some random shuffle that can’t be turned off on Spotify without paying; I managed to queue all the songs and got through but at great personal cost. Caetano, maybe this is not your fault but I hold you responsible. 2/5.
All things considered, very forgettable. The tracks blended together and it wasn't entertaining enough to catch my interest.
I get the comparison to psychedelic music but here that aspect is rather subdued against the bossa nova foundation. It just couldn't make any lasting impression on me. The sitar on the last song sounded way off.
How can you not love an album with a cover like that? Sixties psychedelia is definitely right up my street, but I've not come across this particular gem before. A bit like Os Mutantes-lite, there are shades of Love in there too - it's an interesting slice of psych-tropicalia with the emphasis on pop, which, as with so many South American albums of the era, manages to craft something quite cool out of sounds which would sound utterly naff in any other context. Ultimately, there are no out-and-out bangers here, and you feel the whole exercise was to establish Veloso as some kind of crooning superstar rather than create groundbreaking music - the vocals are upfront and centre stage throughout. A pleasant listen, something of psychedelic curio, mostly cheesy listening rather than essential listening, and not something I'll return to often.

I liked the psychedelic elements of this. It had some classic Brazilian bossanova in there, which I can do without.

I guess this is only on the list because it's Brazilian? For the most part, it sounds like any number of albums from this time period, nothing stands out particularly. That said, there are a few decent tracks. All in all though a pretty unremarkable album.
I have nothing against this album, except I can’t understand the lyrics and it’s not to my taste. My cultural inadequacies aside, there’s a reasonable tempo and vibe to it but it doesn’t captivate me. In an ideal world I would understand it and be able to mark it properly.
This could be the most refined lyrical genius known to man but through my dumb English ears the music doesnt particularly inspire me which is a shame. Its not so much its dated its just not the kind of acoustic guitair I enjoy and more of a cultural novelty which I fail to appreciate. I also feel this probably lead some musical innovation but to my ears it was light touch so didnt really shine in this regard either. Nothing wrong with the music though and the craft.

I really don’t know what to do with something like this. Was it unique? Sure. Did it sound good? Yeah, no complaints. Did it grab me by the gonads? No really. I mean I have no frame of reference to judge music coming out of Brazil in the 1960s. So yeah…it was fine.
I liked parts of this but felt uneven to me. Almost like the back half wasn’t fully conceived. Sounds like this was a pretty important album for the country at the time it was released and I’m tempted to round up for that fact alone…BUT I didn’t really enjoy it. 2.25/5

I am sure in 1968, in some rich guy's dark basement tiki room, with a mid-century bar, and guests by invite only, this record was in constant rotation. Now I just picture it in the dusty 99 cent bin.
Very weird mysterious latin music. Parts of it sounded like psych rock, other parts sounded like Tarantino soundtracks if Quentin was from Rio De Janeiro, and some parts were similar to weird wave Probably not going back to it, but interesting listen nonetheless.
I'm all for these fun and unique albums, but this combination just didn't hit it for me. His vocals didn't really please me either. But I'm happy that this was included and that I got to listen to it.

I’m always excited when an albums run time is short. But then it’s always the albums that are short that drag on and on and seem to take an eternity to get through. I aged 7 years in listening to this 35 minute album. This album blows.

The last twelve or so albums I’ve received have been lackluster meh albums from bands I’ve never heard of (which would fulfill the purpose of why I’m listening through all of these if they weren’t all meh), or they’re the second or third best albums of bands I kind of know but never really liked. In other words, I’m going through a dry spell. This didn’t fish me out of that.
Maybe if I understood Portuguese this would be more interesting.

I've never been a huge world music guy, and this wasn't the greatest. Mostly forgettable, boring. I've heard other stuff, like Fela Kuti, that was much more pleasant and memorable. This just didn't hit anything notable for me. Not terrible, and again I can see how people like it. But didn't do anything for me.

World Beat before it was cool. This is Ok. Kind of fun with many unusual instruments and choices. And not speaking the language, I can't understand the lyrics, and it's important for me to know and enjoy what they're signing about. I wouldn't have this in any rotation. It's ok. Just not for me.

One thing I've learned about doing this project: Bossa Nova isn't my scene. Maybe if I spoke Brazilian Portuguese, I might like this more but the language barrier didn't help.

I understand that this album was extremely influential on Brazilian music and progressive for its time, but it felt pretty outdated when I was listening to it I’ll give it a slight pass though since it’s 57 years old Definitely some fun songs on here, Clara and Eles being my personal favorites, but others fall a bit flat I feel like this is one of those albums that other people probably hold in higher regards than I do so while I had a decent time listening to it, I can’t give it more than two stars Favorites: None

It's nice to step outside of the UK/USA for a change, but surely, there must be better options than this??? Sadly, this album doesn't inspire me to explore that hypothesis. To be clear, I didn't HATE this, but it certainly didn't interest me in any way. That groovy organ on the last track was, I'm afraid, too little too late.

You know, I can understand the appeal of this album. It’s a great mix of Bossa Nova, Industani classical, r&b and a few others, but it comes off uninspired and confused. A few of the melodies are cannibalized from other songs of the era, but they’re good melodies regardless. I’ve not listened to any Brazilian music so I don’t have a baseline for how to rate this, but do to the meandering nature of the album, and my general ignorance of the genre, I can’t rate it very high

I enjoy Tropicalia quite a lot. So I appreciate the historical position of this album. But honestly, recording Brazillian music in the style of Brian Wilson and the Beatles was pretty inevitable. If Caetano hadn’t, someone else would’ve shortly. And what made the world go mad for Psychadelic studio trickery was how GREAT the songs of Wilson/Lennon/McCartney were. The songs here are not great. I only hear two that I would rate as mildly good. And an album without quality songs is like a house without a foundation. You can dress it up in silk and chintz but it won’t hold up for long.
This album didn’t really resonate with me. I neither loved it nor hated it. It mostly just drifted along without making much of an impact. On a positive note, the album art features a wild photo!
Meh, perhaps if I was Brazilian or understood Portuguese this would have more impact.

Debut solo album Bossa Nova / Latin / Psychedelia / Rock / Pop. This is something I'd never usually pick out for myself. That's why this journey is so cool. New sounds. This isn't my thing, however I appreciate the musicianship and art. Cool album cover art.
There were some cool and funky moments, but for whatever reason I still found it quite hard to get that much into this one. Probably just my lack of experience with Brazilian music, which just makes it a sound I am a lot less used to. But I'm definitely open to this one growing on me in the future.

Something about the Portuguese language really distracted me from the music and made me feel annoyed with the album. I was glad when it was over.
I knew this day would come. I guess that's what listening to 1001 albums is about. Some stuff will stick, some stuff won't. I didn't particularly think this was bad, just not my bag. I actually have heard the first track somewhere before. I'm sure if your Brazilian this is a classic album. At least give it a listen once.

This album is ....different..... It's part of a musical movement in the 60's called Tropicalia. This genre combines literally any musical genre together and trys to make them play nice together, but they usually don't. It's like Brazilian psychadelica. It's weird. Like, this album has traces of psychadelica, pop, rock, traditional Indian music, Bossa Nova....it's just a melting pot of any style of music or musical instrument imaginable. Not my favourite. Favorite songs: So Loco Por Ti America, "Alegria, Alegria", Eles Least favorite songs: Clarice, Anunciacao, Clara 2/5
I always get scared when there’s psychedelia described in the album. Having said that, I was pleasantly surprised. Would I listen to it again? No. But the musical arrangement flowed nicely and I appreciated the rhythm. I would give this 2.5 if I could.
Not what I was expecting from the cover. The music is really good, but the singing is just so terrible. Probably on purpose like a tom waits sort of way, but I hate tom waits too.

I have no context to say is this was good or bad. The guitar work was good but I didn’t find it exceptional, and lyrically it all sounded like Portuguese to me, though the nod to MJ and the Beatles seemed misplaced and awkward. Respect to his efforts but I probably will not be looking for this one and defer my opinion to others who know better.

If I'd been a few (25) years older I've dropped some acid, put this on my turntable and had a groovy time in my pad with other hip brighr and happening things. Cosmic.
I normally really like World music, for the sincerity and novelty of it - "Shaka Zulu" by Ladysmith Black Mambazo and "Buena Vista Social Club" being great examples. Ceatano Veloso did not have that appeal, for those reasons. He's doing something that sounds a little "put on," like a Carnaval mask (huh? HUH?).I craved some Brazillian Jazz and got an attempt at psychedelic-pop (maybe?). And not a really well executed version of that. Nothing to say about the lyrics or themes because I don't understand Portugese (I assume it's Portugese).
Tropicália
Pretty boring and unremarkable unfortunately.
Ok, this was way off my radar and was released before I was born. That and the fact that I don't enjoy 60's Latin music much made this a tough listen. 19M people listened to the opener "Tropicalia" and "Alegria, Alegria", that's impressive and the dude has had a long career from the looks of it. I got zero enjoyment out of it though and believe I could have happily gone my entire life without hearing this album. It may be a huge album in Latin America and hold a special place for people who enjoy this kind of music but it was lost on me. I didn't hate it, just don't see the relevance or impact since it wasn't a hit in the US. 2 stars?
It’s an interesting album, obviously very South American but certainly very influenced by the North. Unfortunately I don’t understand a single world of it 5.5/10

It's not every day you sit down to listen to Brazilian 60s music, and for that I'm quite thankful. I think the combination of not understanding a word he's singing, and a Euro/Latin pop musical style I've never really enjoyed (which seems also always fated to mysteriously *atrocious* recording quality, even in the remastered version of this album), and that horrid turtleneck on the album cover, all conspired to make this a somewhat tedious listening experience, with a partial exception to the brief but kind of catchy "Superbacana", as well as the oddly Spanish-titled "Soy loco por ti, America". And although it's probably not fair to either Caetano Veloso or his album, I'm dinging a half-star each for (1) the fact that Veloso himself said that this album was "amateurish and confused", and (2) the Wikipedia entry used the term "artistic cannibalism" as a seemingly distinctive trait of Tropicália music, when it just seems to be describing eclectic influences. Even the "1001 albums" book entry doesn't have much to recommend about the album itself, sadly (although I did enjoy reading that artists like Beck and David Byrne really enjoy Veloso's music).

Ultimately felt like corny, swinging sixties, cocktail music…..also maybe it’s just me but the photo on the album makes Caetano Velcro looks like a serial killer
1967 grows even more mental. From looking at the ‘Disraeli Gears’ inspired artwork, I guessed at psychedelic folk rock and wasn’t far off. Destined for people far hipper than me this was ok. The language barrier (Spanish lyrics?) proved to be the thing that prevented me from giving this no more than a cursory listen. 2/5

Too happy sounding for my taste.
Best Song: Tropicália. Some fun, bouncy rhythms in here. Worst Song: Ave-Maria. Real discrepancy between my expectation of a song based on its title and the reality of it. Overall: It's just a blitz of Brazilian samplers, where it felt like no song settled enough into a rhythm to be appreciated. This might just be my ignorance to the genre, but I didn't glean a lot memorable from this one.
Good moments but nothing stood out as ear catching. And unfortunately the language barrier takes away from it as well. 2.5/5

This was a pretty fun album to listen to while not knowing what was being said. The instrumentals on this were groovy and upbeat. Overall it was a positively fun album but the drawback was it was in Portuguese. 5.0/10
Wow! This is kind of bad. Listening to this album just feels underwhelming despite me having no expectations for it.
Couldn’t get all the way through unfortunately. Very hard to listen to a lyric focused album that’s in another language. The vibes were good though in the half of the album I listened. But it just became too much after a while.

Reading about this album beforehand got me pretty excited and then it ended up being a little bit boring to me. I was hoping for more variety of sounds or for him to lean into the psychedelia part harder. It wasn't bad by any means. It was an easy listen but nothing really stood out to me until at the end he busted out a sitar. It didn't help that I don't speak Portuguese which made it really easy to zone out.
I appreciate the fact that this is an important release in music history, but I am not too fond of the genre
Brazilian men are incapable of carrying a tune due to the inherent nasal quality of Brazilian Portuguese. Brazilian women are not afflicted in this way due to women's natural vocal superiority

Seems good as far as Samba (is that what this is?) goes. It could be phenomenal in that genre, for all I know.

Remembers me on some film-music from the sixties. A pleasant diversion from the recent albums. But sounds a bit too aged for my taste.
Mixed views: psychedic pop elements are very nice especially in the last song but I probably wont listen to this album again.
This has some groovy moments, but overall it's stuck in that 60's rock sound that is hit or miss for me.
Some of it is pleasant. There's some chilled tracks with nice violins and guitar. Some of it is kind of boring. In fact it's mostly boring. I'm not really into it. 2.5 rounded down.
2/5. I do think there is a beautiful nature among the songs of this album but I there is a language barrier that I do need to know to understand the importance. The instrumentals do not save it, a little outdated psychedelic music fronted by lyrics I need to understand but do not. I did check them out and they are interesting, and I do understand the importance of the album, but do not enjoy listening to it too much. It's not terrible, some good songs but not great either.

This is so '1970s tropicalia' that it's comical. Imagine the girl from ipanema on acid. I'm sure it was very popular in Brazil, but not for me, thanks.

Fun, but so far this is my least favourite tropicalia album (that includes Beck)
I'm not big into Brazilian music, so it was pretty forgettable. I did kind of like the last track (Eles) with the Indian instruments. I felt the singer needed to back away from the microphone a bit. You could hear his mouth opening and his breathing too much.

There was just too much going on with this music so it just didn't hit my ears right -- too many tempo changes, too many styles, too many noises with the same vocal style through our. Wasn't bad but just really wasn't for me
