No soy un gran experto en este género pero me parece que me han gustado más otras álbumes de caetano que este.

A nice bossa nova Brazilian album. I don’t speak Portuguese so I can’t comment on the lyrics, but the album has a pleasant vibe throughout - not unlike a lot of reggae or early Jimmy Buffett.

an unexpected album! this self-titled album by caetano veloso was so chill and enjoyable. i wasn't surprised when the album looped without me realizing. titles like "soy loco por i americana" were amusing, but then the songs were quality! this album belonged squarely in the sixties! typically music coming from non-north american countries in the second half of the 20th century were "late" as far as decades go, but oh no, not this album. this album makes so much sense being released in 1968. the south asian influence on "eles" was an unusual combination and really cool, but also contributed to the sixties feel since it was so popular at this time.

I'm not sure I've ever heard quite as strong of a mix of samba and psychedelia as what is present on this album. This particular sound combination made this album run very close to being "exotica", which I have yet to hear much of on this project, so props for that! Largely, this album wasn't really my thing, but I did baseline enjoy the listen!

A snake slithering up towards a woman's chest while she caresses a dragon breathing fire underneath the attention grabbing typography of Caetano Veloso's name, as his serious yet sinister expression both belies and defies the explosive cornucopia that is surging throughout the first of his several self-titled albums. Changing times had come to Brazil, as the aural molasses of bossa nova became looked down upon by the counterculture and gave way to a far more exciting endeavor: Tropicália. Indeed not only an album came of it (the Sgt. Pepper's of the movement) but the first track of this album is named after it, giving an impression that things were going to be adventurous from here on out. And while it may sound at times cluttered and scattershot, ultimately what came from it is one of the more defining records of the age; one that makes the listener feel that they're encountered the changing of the tides happening in real time. Favorites: Tropicália, Clarice, Algeria, Algeria, Anunciação, Superbacana, Clara, Soy loco por ti, América, Eles.

I have a soft spot for Brazilian music but much more on the bossa nova side, less on the tropical pop side. Caetano Veloso was still a good jam though.

The vibes on this remind me a lot of Love's album Da Capo. It has this somewhat interesting psych rock thing going with a bit of a bouncy feel and lots of different instruments and things. It's a bit all over the board, but I don't hate it. This is the self-titled debut from a Brazilian artist. The genre is apparently considered to be "tropicália", which I guess is a Brazilian artistic movement that combined some traditional Brazilian sounds with the the psych rock from the US and UK at the time, plus some African influences too. It seems like it has a bit of an artsy avante-garde reputation compared to traditional Brazilian music. There also seems to be a lot of political stuff going on around this musical movement which I am not even going to attempt to understand. The album is in Portuguese so I have no idea what he's saying, but the vibes are actually reasonably good here. It's a bit hit-or-miss, but a good number of the songs are pretty interesting musically, I like the Brazilian twist on the type of rock that was coming out in the US and UK at the time. The singer has a nice voice too. The first two songs are like normal song length, and then the whole middle is like ~2 minute songs, so it ends up going pretty fast (35 minutes total). I can't say I'm likely to come back to this often, but it was pretty enjoyable. I'm glad I listened to it and expanded my horizons a bit. This album seemed a little disjointed. Definitely just not my jam. I feel if I spoke Portuguese this album might mean more to me (although I seriously doubt it). Additionally, Caetano looks like a serial killer on the cover. It's a bit unsettling.

I'm sure this is highly regarded in Brazil, but it's just another 60s album in another language to me

I sort of assume that, as an historical artefact, Caetano Veloso represents the Brazilian Tropicalia genre and warrants a place on the list. The fusion of traditional, psychedelia, bossa nova and Indian rhythms is oh-so-sixties - but that is the issue, really, as it sounds a little old fashioned to modern ears, despite a creditable effort and energy.

Seems good as far as Samba (is that what this is?) goes. It could be phenomenal in that genre, for all I know.

I could’ve listened closer. But it’s hard because of the language barrier. Cool 60’s psychedelic album, the second one from Brazil that I’ve had so far. Nice mix of genres - some rock, some jazz. Cool stuff but I don’t know if I’m drawn to it again. 3 stars. Standout track: Tropicália

Remembers me on some film-music from the sixties. A pleasant diversion from the recent albums. But sounds a bit too aged for my taste.

Fantastic. I had never heard of this artist, but I listened to this three times in a row. Great sounds, great rhythms.

Mixed views: psychedic pop elements are very nice especially in the last song but I probably wont listen to this album again.

I'm not too fond of this typical way of singing but the music is overall quite entertaining.

This has some groovy moments, but overall it's stuck in that 60's rock sound that is hit or miss for me.

Some of it is pleasant. There's some chilled tracks with nice violins and guitar. Some of it is kind of boring. In fact it's mostly boring. I'm not really into it. 2.5 rounded down.

2/5. I do think there is a beautiful nature among the songs of this album but I there is a language barrier that I do need to know to understand the importance. The instrumentals do not save it, a little outdated psychedelic music fronted by lyrics I need to understand but do not. I did check them out and they are interesting, and I do understand the importance of the album, but do not enjoy listening to it too much. It's not terrible, some good songs but not great either.

Oh my god. Is this guy gunna crawl out of this album cover and murder me??? Who told him to pose that way for his album cover photo? What an interesting marketing strategy… I am happy to report that his music is way more upbeat and fun than his appearance. With a concise 34 minute runtime, this album gave me just the right amount of Brazilian charm this morning.

My first foray into spanish music and it is a hit. Song after song to make you feel like you lost your lover to another man, and the songs to make you feel like you killed that man.

Not my cup of tea. Gets real psychedelic at the end.

Very interesting to read that this album was disruptive enough to lead to the arrest and "forced exile" for the artists 1 year later. Apparently an early album in the Tropicalia genre? I've never heard of that before. The music was fine, pretty upbeat and pleasant. Glad this album was on the list.

I don’t think I was in the right mood for this today, but it was okay. I liked it more as it went along. I’m always happy to hear something non-English since it’s unlikely I’d ever find this on my own.

Very interesting. I never listened to Tropicalia before. I can dig it.

There was a definite mix of Spanish instrumentation without feeling too dated or foreign. Overall pleasant experience that feels like it could have come out of an indie movie soundtrack or something you'd here at a local grocery store. Since the lyrics are in a foreign language, that lost my intrigue and gave the feeling of songs blending together even though there were some cool tempo changes.

Another pleasure from this project. Listening to albums I would have no earthly reason to otherwise find. It's interesting for obvious reasons, and a perfectly good listen. Not ultimately my thing, but we all knew that before I played it.

It's a vibe!

I've found myself generally liking what I've heard from Brazil and its weird ventures into the psychedelic, but I feel as though this album doesn't really perfectly strike those points that I enjoyed in works like Os Mutantes. Its still good, but could stand to commit to a song more often, as there are many times in a track where it'll stsrt to get good just to end a few moments later, and believe you me, I love a short song, but an unfinished song is not how you do it. There's a lot here to like, with fun tracks that make you feel like bouncing up and down, but one has to wish for a little bit more substance in its tracks, because if I want to party, this would probably not be my first choice for dancey, flavorful tracks, but again, a solid enough venture.

Had a few nice sounds, and certainly not a long album. Not much else positive to say, certainly won't be one to remember.

The name Tropicalia comes from the intro track on this record, which in turn was only a temporary name when someone suggested it after comparing the lyrics to some tropical-themed interactive art exhibit. It's a beautiful and whimsical album, with baroque pop vocals on top of a rich lush orchestral backing (often loud and triumphant), reminding me of the psychedelic pop work of the Zombies or early Pink Floyd. The vocals feel restrained but expressive and confident, giving off mysterious and romantic vibes. The instrumental backing takes from various genres, such as bossa nova in "Onde Andaras", or samba in "Superbacana", but overall is just groovy and happy, inciting the audience to move along. I'm a fan of all the tracks. A very short record, most songs feel complete despite most of them falling under 3 minutes. At 35 minutes, it does fly by and was a very easy listen. A few weak ones in the second half, but they also have something cool about each of them.

Os Mutantes was my first exposure to the genre of Tropicália. I had never heard of it before, and I’m still not 100% sure what it is, but I like the mix of Brazilian pop and psychedelic music. And this album seems to be the most enjoyable attempt at that mix that I’ve heard so far. But this album also blends some bossanova into it. And I’m really sad I haven’t gotten a proper bossanova album yet. Because I love it so much. Just that simple inclusion adds a whole other layer of serenity. Some of these songs are very calming, but still color and kind of weird. I think the cover best represents this. The beautiful, bright, and abstract artwork is the color, and then Caetano’s portrait with damn near the most menacing gaze I’ve ever seen is the weird. Os Mutantes is even featured on the last song, which is by far the most experimental and unique, but it sounds really cool. Rating: 6/10

Well produced. Almost an ASMR vibe. Nothing popped for myself.

I find it very hard to evaluate a foreign language album. A lot of what impacts me personally is derived from the lyrics of a song. It’s also important in contextualizing the music. This album is definitely musically very eclectic and innovative. The song structures and varied instrumentation are certainly reminiscent of Sgt. Peppers and other contemporary psychedelic albums. But I couldn’t tell you for certain if this was classic or even great because I never really connected with it.

This album was an awesome blend of styles with a unique Brazilian twist. So cool!

A fun blend of Psych Rock and Samba. I don't understand a word of Portuguese but it was still fun to listen to. Some of the songs passed me by a bit but there was a groovy tropical vibe to the whole thing. Maybe I'll come back to this eventually. Honestly, I think it'd be good cooking music? I really need to make a playlist out of songs I find good to cook with. Favourite: Tropicália

Really dig it, this is the kind of music I love discovering thanks to this list. Caetano Veloso's self titled album is a different sound for Latin music, but I kinda dig how it's almost a sort of Prog-Latino. 4/5

What, and I cannot stress this enough, the actual fuck is this doing on the list. It starts off awfully and never really betters that. Truly dismal.

I like early caetano, but this is not one of his best. A good experience though.

This was a surprise 5 out of 5 for me. I had never heard of this album or "Tropicália" but hey - I really like it! A mix of classic Brazilian jazzy/folk sounds with psychedelic influences. It is enjoyable to listen to and full of surprises. I have no idea what the lyrics reference but I understand from the description that it's politically edgy? I can't speak to that of course, but what a fun new discovery. I will definitely add this to my listen list.

"Caetano Veloso" is the debut solo album by Brazilian composer, singer, guitarist, writer and political activist Caetano Veloso. The musical genres listed are tropicália and pyschedelic rock. Eclectic assortment of influences include pyschedelia, rock, pop, Indian music, bossa nova and Bahian. For Sure. It is credited as one of the first tropicália efforts which means a union of popular and avant-garde styles. Brazillian artist Hélio Oiticica delivering a speech opens "Tropicália." Multiple percussions come in. Strings and horns give an air of pyschedelia. The rhythm becomes a slow bossa nova beat. This a very good and successful example of his pyschedelic-bossa nova fusion. "Alegria, Alegria" starts with pyschedelic guitar and an organ swirl. The percussion is a tambourine beat. It's slow then goes fast and back again. The vocals are very 60's pop. "Superbacana" is more active and sped up. A more prominent string orchestra with a bossa nova beat. It's very much a fun song. "Paisagem útil" is a lush string-laced bossa nova. This is more traditional and very much baroque. A love song and ode to Rio. The beat picks up in "Soy Loco por Tí, América." A harder edge rhythm close to a Columbian Cumbria and Cuban mambo. The title translates to "I am crazy for you, America." I think that's South not North. There are some great song examples of successfully creating a fusion particularly the pyschedelic rock-bossa nova fusion one. The album goes into a variety of styles. Nothing too extreme. The orchestral and overall arrangements are excellent. I enjoyed this album quite a bit.

I'm not big into Brazilian music, so it was pretty forgettable. I did kind of like the last track (Eles) with the Indian instruments. I felt the singer needed to back away from the microphone a bit. You could hear his mouth opening and his breathing too much.

Quite exotic to my ears. Veloso's voice is perfect for this style. Alegria, Alegria is a masterpiece.

I would not actively seek this out, nor will I again but was refreshing to listen to.

I love getting stuff I've never heard of before, but while this was interesting at first, I got bored pretty fast. Didn't really love it.

A beautiful album of Brazilian psychedelic rock. Never thought it would be a favorite

Wasn't in the mood for this sorta album today. Not a slight on the album, it was a pleasant listen and the back half had some quality tunes with fun instrumentation. Fav track: Eles 2.5/5

Great vibe for a Mediterranean listen. Nice hazy production, lots of wide ranging influences blurring together. Little bit of a sinister edge to the pleasantries which I really liked too. Three and a half. Fave track: Eles

Pretty fun, especially the tracks with Gal Costa. Could imagine this playing over a nice summer evening while enjoying a cool drink with some friends. Not sure anything in particular I think is all time, but still a good listen. Fave track: Clara

Album 173 of 1001 Caetano Veloso - Caetano Veloso Rating : 3 / 5 A little Brazilian Psychedelic Rock/Samba. Can't get into the lyrics too much, as I didn't understand them, but the music was fine. Good to listen to as I went along with my work.

Groovy! What's not to like? Nothing resonated so fiercely to call me to repeat listen, but it was an enjoyable ride. Might listen to the whole again.

Didn’t enjoy this. It’s not really the kind of thing I enjoy listening to. I don’t have a problem with non-English singing either. Musically not my thing.

Lovely Tropicalia album through and through. Maybe can do without 'Ave Maria', but the rest is just perfect. Awesome record.

Rather charming example of "Tropicalía". The opener with that name has impressive arrangements and instrumentation for instance... Am I *fully* charmed by this whole LP though? The jury's still out on this one... I might first need to get acquainted a little more to this sound and its peculiar wonders. Call it a cultural blind spot... And I might also need little more time to do this. As a consequence, this is going to my "waiting" list... Number of albums left to review: 473 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 250 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 120 (including this one) Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more essential to me): 155

Look, I certainly don't think that everything on the list needs to rock an above-the-equator, western-culture aesthetic. There SHOULD be some cultural representation from around the world. But this? This whole Tropicália thing? It's just a mess as a genre. It has the potential for brilliance but seems to ALWAYS slip sideways into cheesy tropes instead. I started this album with a whole lot of grace in my heart... which eroded away into bitter anger that I had to listen to a whole album of cheeseball drivel. Hard pass.

Again, it’s hard to rate music from traditions one is unfamiliar with. I like the mix of Brazilian beats and 60s western sounds.

This really failed to move me in any meaningful way.

I don't have all of the context of where this stands in the Tropicália world, but I am reading this is one of the first Tropicália records, so I'm guessing it's very important. All of that aside, this is just a great record. Everything you'd want and expect in a classic Tropicália record.

Different. Struggle to rate these as they are so far from what I know. It was interesting enough.

I can imagine this album as a soundtrack to a really cool film-noir style somewhat psychedelic semi-absurdist murder mystery tragicomedy. Not kidding. That's how I hear it. Fun!

Another pleasant surprise. I really enjoyed the mix of Latin styles and 60s psychedelic rock.

This one flew by, and I was really excited to hear it as I'm always looking for new and unique songs but nothing really stood out to me as I was listening. Glad it's on here, but I'd put it at the lower end of "should be on here"

Love a good departure like this. Not sure how many Brazilian artists we've had, but from the '60s? This almost certainly has to be the first. Very cool, vibrant style, mixing some sounds that you might traditionally expect from Latin America with psych rock stuff, it works quite well. Even a sitar! I'm always a sucker for a sitar. Really good album, wish I could say I loved it more. But I'm glad we got to take this trip. Favorite tracks: No Dia Que, Anunciacao, Soy Loco Por Ti America, Eles. Album art: Love, love, love it. Excellent '60s art style. The portait photo in the middle isn't great, and it's made worse in contrast to the excellent, colorful art all around. Fantastic. 3.5/5

I'd probably like it more if I could understand the words

Caetano Veloso was definitely something new for me. Even though the album is in portuguese, I thought it was interesting that I could tell roughly the decade the music came from. I liked hearing something new and different from what I would choose for myself, but I didn't find any tracks that stood out for me to come back to again.

A very enjoyable, fun Tropicalia album from the last 1960s. This album is something different to what I've listened so far which makes it a bit more special. I like the various instruments and the rhythm of the songs even if I don't understand what he sings about. Good album overall.

I expected this to be a 4 star based on the genre, and it looks like I was right. It's a nice album, and there's a few standouts on here that I really like. I know some people dislike albums that aren't in English, but I'm not one of those people. I actually quite enjoy the change. His voice makes the language sound soft and pleasing to the ear. I'd quite like to have this on vinyl. My favourite songs were Tropicália, Onde Andaras, and Superbacana.

There was just too much going on with this music so it just didn't hit my ears right -- too many tempo changes, too many styles, too many noises with the same vocal style through our. Wasn't bad but just really wasn't for me

First encounter with tropicalia on the list, found this LP enjoyable if somewhat homogeneous melodically and instrumentation-wise. Don’t know if any of these tracks will stick with me long, but all of them were an enjoyable listen and that’s usually not the case in my experience.

Most likely, this is very good.

That is a cool cover. Would make a great poster on the wall of a record shop in 1969. You could only get more 60s psychedlic if it glowed under a black light and had a pot leaf on it. Anyway, enjoyed the listen and the Brazilian vibes. Every now and then it felt like there was a moodier, darker undertone to a tune and I really liked that aspect. Again though, just chill with trying to ask me to name a single song off of this, alright? Not gonna happen.

Definetely this is not my favourite music genre.

Tropicalia, Alegria, Alegria, Onde Andaras, Superbacana, Paisagem Util. No idea what he’s saying but I know I like it. So peaceful in certain places and then epic at others. I liked all of this.

Love this kind of music

Interesting? Somewhat? But I don't understand any words!

There’s a lot of flavor blending together here, like a samba smoothie. Overall a really easy listen that offers up a lot of complexities if you sit with it for a bit.

A sonically-diverse and well-formed debut that’d sound equally at home soundtracking a Sunday morning or cocktails by the pool as it would a Latin nightclub or cigars in a low-lit lounge.

Average Latin vibe album

Disclaimer: I do not speak Portuguese. Really pleasant listen. Seems cool and important. Some genuinely gorgeous moments here.

When I saw the genres were samba and psychedelic rock, I knew I was in for something interesting. This did not disappoint, with its unique blend of the general sound of that era mixed with Latin. Highly enjoyable (and, on a side note, my second album in a different language in a row).

I mean... Brazilians just know, how to do this kind of music.

This sounds like something they'd play in Better Call Saul for a montage of Mike Ehrmantraut making a Looney Tunes-tier trap to fuck over the cartel. A really cool record. I'm always happy to see something non-western. I don't understand a word of Portuguese, but I'm sure he's spitting straight facts. "Tropicália" is truly the perfect name for this genre.

I tried. I really did. Sorry, but nope.

I listened all the way through! I won't give a 2nd listen. I can firmly say, this wasn't for me. It didn't even really make me think of mi hermoso Puerto Rico. He sounded like he was having fun. I wasn't. Maybe the sounds of the Dear Science led to greater expectations. Doesn't matter.... 1 1

In an effort to catch up this is the first in a series of express reviews: Brazillian Donovan. Listenable. 3.5

2 It seems our summer of love-era psychedelic scene made its way south at some point. Hearing a fusion of more traditional Latin American music with what reminded me of The Zombies was interesting at first, but I feel like it ultimately kind of resulted in the worst of both worlds, as no part of this album comes anywhere near the abstractly trippy or catchily danceable highs of either genre. I will say, I’m trying to open my mind as much as I can with this list, but some of these foreign language albums can be hard for me, as I’m a very lyric-driven person and only fluent in English. I really need something else strong to grab onto if I’m going to be drawn in, and this didn’t give me that. Didn’t dislike, but I found it pretty forgettable, and I don’t think I’m likely to return.
