Western music

brought back some memories

Straight out a Tarantino/Coen Bros movie. It's kind of corny on the surface level... but at the same time every song is about guns. I love the casual, consistent violence. 1 - Dog shit album. 2 - Think it sucks, get why others might like it. 3 - Fine and even enjoyable, but wouldn't listen to again. 4 - Like it enough to listen to again at another time. 5 - Love it. Could listen to whenever.

3: You are listening to K-Rose.

Wilder Westen all over again.

Fun. Not horrible. Quite repetitive though.

American folk. Not great, not terrible

Leppoisaa, positiivista taustamusiikia. 2,5* joka pyöristyy ylös tällä kertaa.

El Paso!

A couple of amazing songs and lots of filler.

its okay

Old school country eh

#184/1001 🇺🇸🤠 Starts off quite promisingly but got quite tiresome by the time i got to the end. I prefer the storytelling element to to this musically. Best Tracks: Big Iron, They're Hanging Me Tonight, Utah Carol.

not my thing

It is crazy how for genres I don't listen to very much, it feels like every artist has no unique identity at all.

I continue to find the number of country albums on this list bewildering, especially now I know that the editors are UK-based. I also find the obsession with cosplaying the Old West in these cowboy ballads bizarre and laughable, and a bit distasteful because of how strongly it connects with America's exceptionalism and self-mythologisation.

had a really hard time listening to this and being objective with the rating... I pretty much despise this kind of music but its what they had back in the day. Man can definitely sing, and the recording is so clean considering it was recorded in the late 50's and its IN STEREO! The guitar in "El Paso" is really good and sounds fun to play. I don't like this album and I wouldn't tell anyone I know that they have to listen to this before they die

Its alright, not much to review I feel. Very similar throughout. Feeling an OK 2

I don't hate it but this is definitely not going on any playlist any time soon Can't go much higher than: 2.2

I enjoyed some of this, but most of it was kind of cheesy and monotonous.

It always blows my mind when an artist that I've never heard of has millions of listeners. there are still 3 million people who listen to Marty Robbins, and he died before I was born. This music isn't my cup of tea, but I would absolutely be listening to it if I was driving on route 66 in Arizona.

Im too young for this

lifelong conservative, i see, who spent most of his time stationed in the Solomon Islands during WWII and taught himself how to play the guitar. not a bad album, but not my kind of music + definitely don’t agree with his political views.

It was harmless enough. Absolute rubbish song writing, my parents loved this sort of stuff, I remembered some of the songs all this time later.

This was my grandma's favourite. She was deaf. Reminds me of irish folk crap, but with a horse. He literally sounds like Daniel O'Donnell but with fewer fiddles. Not offensive, but I'm 3 generations removed from the average enjoyer of this. Not for me.

Big iron is fire but thats it

Not saying I didn't enjoy it, and it's something completely different so far, but I might as well be listening to medieval lute music for all it's relevance.

mid mid mid

Day 4 Before: This looks interesting. Maybe some rock 'n' roll, country, blues, something like that? I feel like I'm a cowboy listening to this. Although that's kinda a vibe, it gets repetitive pretty quickly. It is nice, and there are some great guitar works and solos and the harmonies scratch my brain. But this album does lack a bit of depth and I think I understand now what people mean when they say some really old albums are just a collection of singles. And the same song twice on the album? Favorite(s): They're Hanging Me Tonight, The Hanging Tree, Saddle Tramp

Saddle Tramp

Not my thing but an interesting diversion

Hard to judge this, I like songs with a story and some of them on here are pleasant enough if the mood takes you but I would never feel like listening to the whole album. Like a lot of the very old albums on here they are just too far removed from my era / taste. I like later stuff that was probably influenced by this (see Dave Alvin) but that’s because the music is way more developed and interesting. 2.2

Not my thing. Tuned almost all of it out.

I'm not as averse to country as some and although this was a bit pedestrian, even despite some of the subject matter, I could hear a little Johnny Cash in some of the tracks. But this is not really going to win me over to anything beyond this single listen. I bet my dad would be all over this though!

Not my kind of music, but lovely singing voice

Big Iron me gustó mucho.

Fav song: Big Iron

Country and Western music might not be my cup of tea. It is an album released on 1 January 1959.

Fine but not really my genre.

No thank you.

Unless I'm a Coen Bro in need of soundtrack material I can't imagine why I'd have any interest in this. What tone are they going for here? Why goes the vengeful gunslinger have a smooth backing choral?

Started out promising as this seemed to have the hallmarks of Americana, reminding me a little of Calexico and the like, it got tired quite quickly however. The Elvis sounding vocals don’t do a lot for me and the songs sounded very similar with little to differentiate one from the other.

4 - Old Timey western songs. Odd how upbeat and genteel the music is with the gritty subject material.

Never would have listened to this. And while I'm glad I did, it wasn't necessary listening to me. 4/10

2.3/5 Some good songs on this album. I'm not much of a western era type of guy so some of these songs didn't interest me much but I enjoyed listening to it mostly

medio country folk muy muuy tranquilo. no me encantó bastante depre

Literal ballads

My wife loves this shit so I’m gonna attempt to not be too derogatory. It was hard to listen to as someone who sucks at hearing lyrics because it was like “ok… he’s telling a story” but there was not a single second of interesting music behind it. I really struggled to get through most of this. Like halfway through every song I was like “ok I get it.” I however think the song El Paso has been forced upon me enough where it’s catchy now.

2 out of 5. As much as I don't like country music, I believe Big Iron is hands down the best country song ever.

A little dated, hasn't held up amazingly well. Musically repetitive, but falling closer to the side of thematic rather than tedious. Relatively light once you get past Big Iron.

there has to be better things then this

182/1001 First listen. So this list has just any old album on it huh? Most of it sounded like the same mediocre song to me but that’s just one listen. 4/10

El Paso is a good tune. They all sorta sound the same and try to be nostalgic for a time that is far enough in the past that no one today really connects with them. Fine enough to listen to in the same way that you might watch a John Wayne movie and enjoy it.

Musica vaquera

I love cowboys. I didn't love this

I have been wanting to listen to the album since I alway see people buying the record. It is okay. Big Iron and El Paso are stand outs, but besides that, the album just doesn’t hit for me.

Tough listen out of context from old westerns. El Paso is good, but the GD version is better.

I don't think this singer would bust a grape in a food fight.

“No one dared to ask his business No one dared to make a slip The stranger there among them Had a big iron on his hip” Marty Robbins does what he does very effectively here. This album is so “does what it says on the tin” that it’s almost impossible to be surprised by a single note of it. The difficulty I have is that the stories don’t compel me and the music is predictable. It cultivates the vibe it’s trying to achieve without flexing a muscle. It feels almost effortless. However, I feel that this effortlessness rather than seeming impressive just comes across as lacking any edge or grit. I feel here that I am getting a Saturday afternoon television Western when I could have had “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly”. I may be being humourless and something of a fun sponge because there were tracks on here that I enjoyed. I just felt that even at its best it never quite broke free of its tackiness or lack of real depth. It’s cowboy music for people who want to see a bad guy dressed in black gunned down by a good guy dressed in white who then rides off into the sunset. There’s nothing wrong with that, it just doesn’t do it for me.

Rather be listening to Johnny Casg

A bunch of cowboy tales. Pleasant enough, probably good in the context of a film soundtrack, but not something I would listen to in isolation.

The first track is very good. The whole thing definitely creates an atmosphere and tells a story. A few too many that sound similar to break into 3 territory though.

This album cashes in on the 50s cowboy nostalgia and feeds memories of the old West. The Indian wars were within living memory when this album was made and makes you realise how young a country America is

Pas trop ma came

Listened to this during my first time eating at a Cracker Barrel First country album from here. Never really been a country gal, but I do kind of like "Big Iron", it's a very iconic song. Another one I liked more than I expected to is "The Master's Call", but I wouldn't say i have any favourites. I appreciate the storytelling, but that's about as far as my praises can go.

Liked: Big Iron

I've always felt a way about country music and this album never stood a chance on changing that feeling.

Different times.

Every song is about outlaws, fair maidens, and guns. Don’t like this kind of country music at all. Sounds extremely dated, and I would turn this off if it came on the radio. I’ll give it a 2 just because of the cool album cover and the storytelling (albeit repetitive).

Sounds exactly like the cover of the album looks. Some good square dancing tunes n here (if that's even still a thing). I didn't need to listen to much of this.

I don't really believe this guy is capable of killing anyone for love or money, not with the little wry smile he has while he sings, as if to say, "Isn't this fun, pretending we're in a cowboy movie?" Except the outlaw country that works is sung by people who believe that these songs are about real life in some way, that not only people but they themselves are capable of desperate acts, and that these songs are about the beauty and depravity of the human condition. The fun someone like Johnny Cash or Steve Earle has isn't cosplay, it's gallows humor. Not "Let's pretend" but "You gotta laugh or cry."

And it was also the night that the skeletons came to life The bones are their money So are the worms They pull your hair up, but not out To turn into a man and have another chance at life All they want is another chance at life They’ve never seen so much food as this Underground there’s half as much food as this And the worms are their money The bones are their dollars

Trying to keep an open mind but Not for me. As my daughter said, I could die without listening to this one.

Seems like a niche that didn’t need filling. But it was popular in its day.

Not my thing. Pretty samey

Classic country

The first couple of songs were interesting but then it got weird. He really likes singing about times when men could shoot other men. By the end I was openly hostile towards the album.

4/10 An album like this is always interesting to get. It’s a genre that I have no real fondness for outside of a few artists here and there that just click with me, but I’m always open to hearing something different, so I was hopeful enough when I gave this a spin. The first thing to note is that the production and musicianship are both excellent here. The sound is crisp and clear, and apart from Marty’s vocal being a little too prominent, meaning things got a little lost behind him now and again, the balance and coherence of the sound is really good, particularly for a 67 year old record. The band are really tight, but play with a fun, free style that elevates the feel of the songs really well. Marty himself is an excellent singer, and when they’re playing the more fast paced numbers, I found myself getting a bit more into it, but when things slowed down, I began to struggle quite a lot more. Crooning singing with fast vibrato really grates on me and when he started on that kind of stuff this became much less engaging. Fortunately, the record did shift around a bit and things rarely stayed at the same pace for long. As a whole, it kind of has the sound of an Elvis record had Elvis stuck to playing white boy music, rather than pinching black music and packaging it for his white audience. I did find myself bobbing along to this and, while it was generally fairly simple stuff, there were little moments of musicianship and composition that just perked up my ears a little and helped me along. All in all, not a bad record at all, but just not one that is really my thing, and it didn’t have enough of musical interest to drag it over the line into something that would have grabbed hold of me and demanded further attention. Big Iron - There’s a decent pace and bouncing rhythm to this. His vocal style reminds me a bit of Elvis, but it feels a bit more honest. It’s not exactly complicated or anything, but it does what it sets out to do really well. The production is great, the backing vocals are really nice and it’s just a pretty coherent and consistent song. Nice. Cool Water - This is more hard for me to stomach. Warbling vibrato croony vocals are a bit of a kryptonite for me. There’s nothing terrible about this, but it’s pretty plodding and where the previous track had a bit of drive and groove to it, this just settles back into benignity. As a composition, it’s pretty standard and doesn’t offer anything particularly interesting, but it kind of hits the tone it’s going for. Billy The Kid - Ah, a cowboy waltz, why not? Again, this is quite a plodding, but there is more of an interesting choice of chords here to create a bit of an uncertain feel to it as it shifts between major and minor tonalities. Unfortunately, it’s more of that vocal style that doesn’t work for me. A decent production, an interesting song, but ultimately not something that really grabbed me. A Hundred And Sixty Acres - This a bit less croony. It’s still a bit plodding, but feels a bit more foot forward so drags itself along with a bit more panache. There are some decent bits of guitar work from the lead here that add a bit of extra depth to the composition, but it’s still a little on the dull side. They're Hanging Me Tonight - Oh, we’re backing the pace down again. This does sound quite a lot like a crooning Elvis track and it’s just not for me. Compositionally, it’s very basic, both structurally and instrumentally and it leans too much on the warbling vibrato. It does sound great for a 1959 recording though. Strawberry Roan - The pace has picked up again now and it’s more engaging for it. When he’s not crooning, he is way more subtle with his vibrato, which helps a lot. It’s quite a plodding rhythm, but there’s some pretty decent lead guitar that drifts around in there. The way the vocal climbs and falls up his register is quite nice too. II don’t think this is bad actually, but I do think it’s a little on the boring side. El Paso - Some pretty guitar to kick us off here and Marty’s vocal is subtle but well delivered. The composition shuffles around into different movements pretty nicely. It’s quite a breathless song, despite not only having a moderately fast tempo, but it’s pretty persistent. The band are really tight and flow around each other really nicely, and the vocal harmonies are really consistent and well controlled. It does drag on a little too much though, sadly. In The Valley - Back to an extremely plodding, croony number. The thing is, the quality of the playing, singing and recording is really good, but it’s just a little bit uninspiring and doesn’t particularly do anything to grab hold of me. It’s very nice, but that’s about it. The Master's Call - The rhythm and swing to this is way better. The bass line is a little too deep in the mix, which is a shame as it gives this a bit of a bouncing drive to it that I quite like. There are some pretty interesting developmental changes at places in this that don’t always take things the way you would expect, but it does get a bit samey as it goes along. I’m finding the general pace and groove of this pretty decent and I feel like I want to like it more than I actually do. Running Gun - More pace, yeehaw! There’s a nice bouncing groove to this, some solid instrumental work and it’s got some decent hooky melodies in the vocals. As with the rest of the album, the quality of the playing and production is great. This was an enjoyable little ride, did its thing and then it was done. Lovely stuff. Down In The Little Green Valley - We’re back in croon town, sadly. Again, it’s competently done, there are some nice tight harmonies, but it’s a bit too plodding and croony for me. It’s a decent example of the genre, but it’s the genre itself that I find the problem. I can appreciate the artistic quality of this, but it’s just not for me. Utah Carol - This is quite plodding and rhythmically uninspiring. The melodies are decent if a bit too repetitive. It’s quite a nice little track, the performances are decent, but it’s also just… Not that interesting.

The "El Paso" song was catchy, but the rest all sounded very similar. I love the vocal tone though.

This is like an album of title sequence songs from 1950s B-movie westerns. I am far from convinced this is an album I needed to hear.

Pleasant and cool vibe, but super simple 3.8/10

I need to play rdr2

Big iron was good

Top Track: They're Hanging Me Tonight

Yiihaw

Aburridísimo.

I could have not listened to this before I died I think

As much as I would like to get into the country and western genre, I seem to cannot do so... It's not the worst thing i have heard from this genre, this one is decent I'd say.

Too Johnny cash

Album Review 061 Gunfighter Ballads And Trail Songs by Marty Robbins (1959) Rating 2/5 Here’s an album recorded almost 70 years ago that romanticises the Ol’ Wild-West of at least another 70 years earlier. This is primitive country music about cowboys, outlaws and how love will end up with you shooting someone of getting shot yourself. I can understand why this is seen as such an important milestone in the history of country music, and it may have sounded exciting and polished back in 1959, but now it just sounds hokey, dated and repetitive.

Weird album tbh

I found it was pleasant and a cool theme (all out cowboy country/western) - maybe it's my unfortunate British sensibilities but I found it just fine really

Uh . . . I'm gonna say this was entertaining enough not get a 1, but, c'mon! What are we doing here?

Listened to the first 3 and I think I got the flavor. Not something I would like in most circumstances, thus the low score. But it did make me think about how my enjoyment of music is very context-dependent. If I were cooking flapjacks in a rural cabin, or driving down a lonely western two-lane highway, or sitting in a diner in a David Lynch movie, this would have been perfect.

Enjoyed - smooth vocals. Only problem for me is that cannot really relate to Cowboy songs about horses so kinda washed over me with no emotional hook.

A piada, no entanto, fica velha rápido, e o álbum é unidimensional.

Hokey honky-ass shit.

Mittlerweile etwas angestaubt. 2/5

I do like some old school country like Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Hank Williams, and even all the way back to The Carter Family. But, I have never even heard of the name Marty Robbins. Or if I did, it did not stick in my brain. First impression - this is some corny, old timey music that reminds me of Burl Ives singing Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer - or something like that. After a few listens of the whole album, it started slightly growing on me. As soon as El Paso came on, I realized that I have heard that one somewhere before but couldn't place where or when. Perhaps from Breaking Bad? Could be. I also noticed some similarities between Marty's singing style and Roy Orbison. Not sure if they influenced each other or not - couldn't find evidence of that online. Some of the characters in these songs also reminded me of the types of characters found in the songs on Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska album - which is one of my all time favorite albums. Though I like the sound of Bruce's record so much more. Makes me wonder if Bruce is familiar with Marty Robbins. Another thought - I wonder if hip hop fans would like this since it's a lot about killing people that crossed your path or took your girl - so has some similarities thematically. Bottom line - it's ok, and I ended up clicking like on 5 songs (Big Iron, 160 Acres, They're Hanging Me Tonight, Cool Water, El Paso). They say he was influential on the "outlaw" country genre - but I'm not sure I see the connection. I'll probably never listen to the whole album again, but wouldn't mind these handful of songs popping up on my playlists. Liked songs on Spotify: 5/15 Rating: 2/5

i recognize a couple of songs. overall not bad. not my type of music. going 2 stars.

Zorryyyyy (haha lmao?

Not one for me.

I'm really not a country fan, so I was ready to give this 1 star from the get go. But I figured I should at least listen to it, which I'm glad I did, as there were honestly a couple songs I had fun with. Still not a fan of country though.

certainly something

Very nice country like music, but with a little Spanish guitar

old fun for a little bit

Lk cool

Tiresome.

15 Gunfighter Ballads is 14 too many for this cowboy.

Not for me

That was a tough one to get through. If you like traditional country, boarder line folk music, this one is for you.

Already knew a couple songs on this that I loved but was severely disappointed with the rest. Many songs you couldn’t distinguish from each other..guy has some hang ups about his old girlfriends that will get him hung up sooner or later. 5/10

A couple times but mostly the same. Not a huge fan

Not my thing

Cowboys.

Hard to get through

Oh Lord. Another Country album. It'll take a miracle for this to not be a one or two stars. Let's find out. To his credit, Marty does not have the acid-on-eardrums whining twang of most Country singers, and there's a lot less steel guitar and dismal violin moping than I expected. But that's about it for positives. Lyrically, it's the same old bullshit. Let me tell you a tale of [insert cowboy name], whose deeds involved [insert horses, guns, shooting, and being shot]. Repeat. You have to wonder just how much responsibility these Country singers must bear for the countless gun related deaths and atrocities which have plagued the USA for the past hundred years or so. There's no two ways about it - this music, and the genre as a whole, romantisizes firearms and the notion of a man getting shit done via his ability to wriggle his finger while pointing a weapon at someone. Good job, Marty. Now admittedly, there is a certain allure to the notion of spending your days and nights with a posse of like-minded men, roaming the plains, and law only onto yourselves. But two things: for as cool as that sounds, the music which typically encircles that ideal, is hot garbage. Utter shite. Tame, yarn-spinning, weak and fetid wank. Secondly - grow up. What a pile of childish nonsense. Anyone can imagine a life of non-responsibility. Woop-di-fucking-balls. So. Marty. He has a nice enough voice and his sound is not as apocalyptically grating as the genre usually is.

A good listen and a good example of what I think country music started as. A lot of people seem to get shot.

Got old real fast

There’s this road of tat shops in Great Yarmouth and one of them is a CD shop that used to have a huge Labrador asleep outside. It was an open shop front and it would either have an Irish comedian playing on the speakers or, as far as I can tell, this album on repeat. This is the first year I’ve not been exposed to this in ~20 but I’m confident this is still the case. Still not as cringe as some of the country we’ve had so far.

Schön, gemütlich, aber halt ein wenig langweilig.

He’s got a good voice, but to me there’s nothing interesting going on musically. The songs mostly sound very similar and it’s not a style I dig. It also feels inauthentic, like he’s doing a schtick singing about being a cowboy. I know some(or all?) of these are traditional songs, but if he can’t sound genuine then how is the listener supposed to connect with the words?

Couldn't finish the album, really not my style of music. Feels very generic and uninteresting

some bops but mot my type of music

Really not a country guy

Very elvis-ish

This is #day477 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… it's been a while since this list threw some country at me. It's still one of my worst genres on this journey and will probably stay that way, but this record isn't the worst specimen. I'm just not into the western-cowboy thing and all that jazz. Let it be a 2 out of 5. Looking forward to #day478.

Excuse me while I whip this thing out. Definitely not my vibe, but I can appreciate it for those that like it.

Why wasn't The Master's Call called Big Iron Part 2?

Enjoyed the first song but lost interest after that

It wasn't bad. It wasn't exciting. It sounds very dated, in fairness, it is very old! I know artists have a particular 'sound', but this album was 12 versions of the same song.

Robbins has a glorious voice and his enthusiasm for the material is catching, but I'm sorry this just isn't for me. As enjoyable as the narratives are, I can't beyond the ballroom style melodies and hyper-American subject matter.

This album took me back in time. It felt like I was a kid again sitting on the couch watching those old westerns with Dad. Other than that, not my bag.

Made me want to fall asleep.

2.67, good storytelling and cool sound but I would never listen to this again it wasn’t interesting to me

Fine, nice voice, but i won't gain anything from ever hearing this again

Haven't heard of Marty before. I was hoping for some fun cowboy stuff but after couple of songs it started sounding quite repetitive and boring. I will go back to listening to Townes Van Zandt instead 2/5

Mitä helvettiä

Elvis does country. Not my bag

Not my thang.

Know “El Paso” from numerous movies and shows it is in. Can appreciate the album for what it is and the time it came from, but not for me.

Cool cosplay and album title. Otherwise, nope

Musica de l'oeste...un 5

2.4 1x+ good enough just not my thing. El Paso added to liked songs regardless

I did like bits of this, but it got very samey

Any of these tracks alone would be fun, all of them in a row is a bit much for me though.

Just not my style

Entspannte Country Musik. Gut für entspannte Wache. Ansonsten nichts besonderes.

Ancestral to many genres, a product of its time. I've mostly heard Marty Robbins' music used to establish atmosphere, which is something it's very useful for. Still, he was pretty clearly romanticizing frontier life and doing his part to glamorize the image of the Extremely Rugged Cowboy Survivalist, and the testosterone poisoning oozing throughout these classic western songs doesn't sit well with me.

Honestly just quite funny

Yeehaw! Very clear voice but at the end I felt I had my fill of cowboy music. The Little Green Valley was my favourite song.

This album was pleasant, especially as a more sanitized and family friendly version of Nick Cave's masterful Murder Ballads album that came out several decades later. The rhythm in Gunfighter Ballads can get quite repetitive but the songs are evocative and the singer's voice is easy on the ears. The tracks themselves don't stand out much but it's an album that can be put on without skipping the songs. The opening track, however, Big Iron is the best and contains truly beautiful choral performances as well as some really great songwriting. I'd give this a 3 if it wasn't so generic, but it is closer to a 3 than a 2.

fun, not for me tho

Who knew the wild west was so sanitised? The songs are great but the whole enterprise feels like it's all be Disneyfied. I want some hard-fightin', flea-bitten bastard to be singing these songs; not some dude. Best Tracks: Big Iron; Billy The Kid; El Paso

Spaghetti Westerns or fallout songs. I can appreciate the layered harmonies here but it does get samey melody wise sometimes. Made me sleepy at work

They all sound the same. Just slower or faster

It's fun, but repetitive and a bit boring tbh

Not my jam

cowboy bullshit

2/5 Not my type of music. I am missing somehow a horse and a cowboy hat.

Taky meh

"I got a hundred and sixty acres in the valley Got a hundred and sixty acres of the best" Muziek voor de 'happy few'?

Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee haaaaaaaaaaaaaaw

Recognized a few songs again. Enjoyed those. Saddle tramp, interesting.

Not for me

not my cuppa

59/1001 Marty Robbins - Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs Heard before? ❎ Revisit? ❎ I mean, Western albums aren't going to be my thing, but I didn't dislike it as much as I thought I potentially would have. There's some decent storytelling in the songs, but it lacks variety for me so could never engage fully.

A mix of Texas Swing and the worst of 40s and 50s pre-rock n roll pop music. Marty has a great voice and that helps carry some otherwise truly horrible songs - saccharine, little doggy in the window type stuff. Still connected to folk music traditions of storytelling through song. Also, from a time when all things were regional. Notable songs include Big Iron, The Master’s Call, El Paso.

I feel like Alice in wonderland.

Did not like this. Maybe the lyrics were good, but I didn't catch them. Very hokey to me.

Dont enjoy country

old and uninspiring in the present time

You can see why people went mental for Elvis after listening to this stuff.

Fundamental stuff I guess. I don’t care for it though.

It’s not my thing but an easy listen and clearly an influential record for its genre.

This feels like an album that would have been sold on late night television at one point. This music did not age well, I bet it sounded old six months after it came out. Billy The Kid is super corny. I would have thought El Paso was the big hit but apparently Big Iron is the more popular song from this album. Never mind, it was in Fallout so its got a bunch of listens due to gamers. This album was the definition of meh.

Okay for a couple of songs but too much thereafter.

Big Iron carries hard

Not sure if I've heard any of these songs before. Certainly I have not heard the album proper. I'm very excited to give it a spin. Track 1 by far the most played song on the album. Its jaunty with a great story. A+ Track 2 slows things down with a song about his land. Just okay. Track 3 is a ballad lamenting his upcoming demise via the rope. Somewhat similar to Cash's 25 Minutes To Go. I like this one as well. Track 4 isn't for me. I don't like the background singers singing at the same time. Just give me Marty. Track 5 another slower paced one about Billy The Kid. This one works for me. Good storytelling and straight forward vocals. Track 6 is a peppier little number. A nice follow-up to the last track. Track 7 is an ode to a horse. This album is growing on me. Track 8 depicts a crime going down. Another solid track. Track 9 one of the more upbeat songs, as much as a gunfight can be upbeat. Maybe the best track since the first one. Track 10 is the most famous song, even though it doesn't have the most plays. I've heard this one plenty of times. Not sure I'd remember its Marty Robbins though Track 11 slows things back down. Disappointing after the last one. Track 12 nice bounce back. Wish they didn't layer the voices again but they stop halfway through for a bit at least. Track 13 this is a funky song. I like this one a lot. Good story and a bouncy beat. Track 14 is just okay. Mid-tempo but not super interesting to me. Track 15 is El Paso again. Its still good. I'm glad I got to listen to this, but there are only a handful of tracks I need to hear again. 2.5/5

I don’t play video games nor do I live in the Mid-West USA. This album doesn’t have anything to appeal to me. Country music is not for me, but this isn’t the worst example of the many, many country artists on this list. So this raises it from what would be a one to a two star review. It’s better than the other shit country music, but that’s it.

Oh boy how boring was this 💤 Why are we making music pretending to be a cowboy in 1959?

I am not the biggest fan of country, but did enjoy this storytelling version of country far more than the current stuff. Still not my favorite though.

I recognise a lot of these songs as Johnny Cash covered them afterwards. Not the worst album as some songs are moody and well written, but not the most "up my street" album. Probably won't choose to listen again

(closeup shot of a tumbleweed) (the reviewer holding a gun, two legs open like in a western film's duel scene with Marty Robbins standing opposite them) Reviewer: Sorry, Mr, Robbins. This favour of Western is not my go-to choice. And also, i prefer other ballads, like pop ballads, rock ballads, and... MURDER BALLADS. (gun shot) 2/5

Good performances, but each track blended together a bit too much. This had some fun moments though.

Quite the body count for light entertainment....

Good performances, everything was too similar. Forgot about his song being in a Salsa or Taco kit commercial back years ago

I should have used a private spotify session for this one, but I forgot. Nothing wrong with this album, it is what it says on the tin. I just can't imagine listening to it on my own volition.

Starts off kind of fun.. I kind of like big iron. But really quite monotone and samey throughout the album. Very easy to start listening to the album but actually quite difficult after a few tracks

buf i dont know

2/5 besides big iron (which is a masterpiece) the other songs all sound similar and aren't very good.

Definitely not for me. Just sounds like any other old western style music I've ever heard.

Someone had to make music for Saturday westerns in B&W. Roy Rogers and Dale, Tex Ritter - does this genre even exist anymore?

A bit boring for my taste…

I feel like this whole album screams Fallout vibes (obviously, Big Iron is one of the most well-known songs from the franchise). That being said, this also means that the album is very one-note. There are multiple times where nearly the exact same tune appears in different songs, which I didn't really care for. This album was fun but nothing to write home about.

Not my style. Competent for what it is

Overly cheesy. Not for me

I enjoyed some tracks, but most tracks felt like a chore to get through. Once you’ve heard the first couple songs on this album, you’ve heard it all.

I am not the target audience for this album.

The lyrics say “outlaw”, but the music doesn’t reflect that in the slightest.

Tedious.

Marty BOBBINS more like!! (wasn't actually that bad)

Uf - isch das sozialromantischi Musig. Hät aber schöni Harmonie und Backgroundgsang.

album vo 1960 so country style (?). eis lied no nice gfunde de rest esch halt eif ned so min stil. und es esch eifach no recht sexistisch gsi was chli wtf gsi esch

what was going on in American culture that this became a thing? Cowboys and such were well done by the 1950s...nostalgia? Amazing voice, although I'd prefer hearing him harmonize with someone else than himself.

Knallsterk start. Blir dessverre veldig mye likt etterhvert.

Big Iron is iconic and El Paso is solid too, nice simple storytelling songs. There is about two songs worth of material in this album. Marty Robbins is a fine singer and a pretty good performer in general, and nothing really sticks out as particularly bad. But most of these songs sound the same, and song after song of the exact same cowboy-themed mush is not a lot of fun. I also don't really like the background singers, and the instrumentals are very dull, repetitive, and best ignored. This album certainly provides quite an authentic cowboy experience - really transports you into the saddle of a horse in the wild west, watching cows walk across miles of featureless grassland.

If Elvis was a cowboy. I don’t mean this in a good way.

Love the gunslinger/crooner genre. Fun stories, but the songs became a little redundant and monotone after a while. Still pretty cool album.

i have yank fatigue

Old timey country western. All a bit saccharine, you can see why up and coming artists rebelled against it.

No le conocía. Los 50 son una decada muy muy floja. Se salva algo de jazz y Elvis

Meh, old

To the town of Agua Fria rode a stranger one fine day Hardly spoke to folks around him, didn't have too much to say No one dared to ask his business, no one dared to make a slip The stranger there among them had a big iron on his hip Big iron on his hip It was early in the morning when he rode into the town He came riding from the south side, slowly lookin' all around He's an outlaw loose and running came the whisper from each lip And he's here to do some business with the big iron on his hip Big iron on his hip In this town there lived an outlaw by the name of Texas red Many men had tried to take him and that many men were dead He was vicious and a killer though a youth of twenty four And the notches on his pistol numbered one an nineteen more One and nineteen more Now the stranger started talking made it plain to folks around Was an Arizona ranger wouldn't be too long in town He came here to take an outlaw back alive or maybe dead And he said it didn't matter, he was after Texas Red After Texas Red Wasn't long before the story was relayed to Texas Red But the outlaw didn't worry, men that tried before were dead Twenty men had tried to take him, twenty men had made a slip Twenty one would be the ranger with the big iron on his hip Big iron on his hip The morning passed so quickly, it was time for them to meet It was twenty past eleven when they walked out in the street Folks were watching from their windows, everybody held their breath They knew this handsome ranger was about to meet his death About to meet his death There was forty feet between them when they stopped to make their play And the swiftness of the ranger is still talked about today Texas Red had not cleared leather, for a bullet fairly ripped And the rangers' aim was deadly with the big iron on his hip Big iron on his hip It was over in a moment and the folks had gathered round There before them lay the body of the outlaw on the ground Oh, he might have gone on living but he made one fatal slip When he tried to match the ranger with the big iron on his hip Big iron on his hip Big iron, big iron When he tried to match the ranger with the big iron on his hip Big iron on his hip

This roots and toots in equal measure.

Yeehaw guns woo boom boom bang bang. No thanks. Rating: 2

Listened to this for another list. It's just ok. I didn't care for the little interstitial story bits before each song. 2/5

Not my vibe.

The problem I have with this is not the music at all. It’s pretty good. My problem is there is no reason I can conceive of that I would listen to this again. This falls under a case where I can’t say I don’t like it, I just would never listen to it again.

Not bad but pretty dang ol’ fashioned

smooth voice and melancholy lyrics, but just as a whole not my thing

Look, it's a western album because it was the 1950s and everyone was obsessed with the wild west for some reason. Marty Robbins can definitely sing! El Paso and Big Iron are pretty solid. But it just isn't my jam. You can hear the western/Mariachi influence, but the weird cowboy falsetto work and edgy lyrics make it out as something distinctly not for me.

got through one song. eh

Country at its simplest.

you fucking ass

More songs about horses and dying. I don't have a logical reason to not like this. I just don't. It doesn't feel authentic to me and all of the songs sound the same.

Cool, but just ok.

Big Iron is one hell of a song, but then the rest isn't really my style. (24 known/46 new)

Not for me

Very traditional. Certainly well sung and performed, but not my cup of tea.

Moderatly fun, mainly novelty.

Big Iron and El Paso are the only good ones

Classic Country and me are simple incompatible. 2/5

Bit shit but different

He's got a fine voice, and it's a good representative of its genre, but this isn't really my kind of thing. The lyric "He's about the worst bucker I've seen on the range" made me double take when I (mis)heard it.

Pretty good, surprisingly.

Not really my style, but I love that every song is about murder

Even if you imagined what the epitome of old school country sounds like, this would still blow it out of the water. A bit too twee for me

I know cowboy is having a moment and objectively his voice is lovely - but I simply could not bring myself to engage with this.

Shout-out to El Paso for it's place in Grateful Dead songbook. Otherwise not really a fan of the smooth, straight-ahead, and of it's time nature of this music.

Considered a classic this is just too far outside my wheelhouse to really enjoy.

Country western songs from the 1950s. A little bit Cash-Style, not as dark. Happier.

Sometimes things can get a little too yeehaw for my liking. I do enjoy country music, and the tracks in this album are a full reflection of the album's art, but my problem with it is that almost every song sounds the same. There are some highlights, like The Master's Call, but most of them were as catchy as the same cords over and over again in a track can be. Enjoyable, nothing mind-blowing.

2 Stars (5/15)

Its kinda fun. The songs start to sound the same to me. Its not really for me, but it was a fun listen and the stories painted were kinda fun lol. "Big Iron" and "El Paso" are classics. I think this is actually like a 2.5. Liked Songs: "Big Iron" , "Utah Carol" , "The Strawberry Roan" , "El Paso" , "The Hanging Tree"

liked songs: I definitely recognized Big Iron. I can't say I'm a big fan of this genre (cowboy country??). 1.75

I suppose if I was going to go out to an old-timey western-themed restaurant.... well, I think I would still get pretty tired of this after just a couple of songs. My tolerance is even lower in my own home. I can tell it's got some merit to it, though, so I'm not giving it the dreaded one-star rating.

Country music, cowboys in the Wild West - Voice is smooth and deep - Pretty boring for melodies, lyrics, and instrumentals

Starts out like a gunslinger; quick and sure. But tumbles down into the little green valley faster than a wild mustang being chased by a runaway wagon wheel. OK finish with Saddle Tramp and El Paso, none the less it’s still old country. Overall, the album feels dated and a bit hokey. Limps in at (2.1*s)

I don't know what's stranger: the fact that I recognized a few songs on this album or that I actually enjoyed it all the way through. I expected to rate this very low but to my surprise it was really fun and engaging. I also like how this is considered "Pop" for 1959; catchy strumming, detailed stories, and a copper voice make these bonafide foot-tappers. You're damned if this doesn't make you wanna grab your boots and go herd cattle. It definitely evoked feelings and scenery in a very tangible way. An easy 2.35 for the cowboy waltzes, now go watch The Ballad of Buster Scruggs.

Some jaunty cowboy tunes from a bygone era. Marty my boy can spin a good yarn about the gunslingin' west. Little surprised it was written and released in 1959. I was quite caught up in the ol' saddle tramp's story telling, despite the repetitive themes and it being country music. "El Paso" and "Big Iron" were best tracks. Much more enjoyable then I expected...2.39.

This album makes you realize how really radical the Beatles were in 1962.

El bodrio del country no termina. 1.5

Sorry, not for me, I skipped it after a while! I guess it's a cultural thing, I don't know; for English native speakers I understand the storytelling can be fabulous but for me, meh... let's just say, doesn't make my type ;-)

I’d give Marty Robbins a role in the sack.

He has a lovely voice and some really pretty harmonies. I really really don't love this genre, the stories are all basically country and western stories of stealin' girls and shootin' bad'uns and rustlin' horses. I can see the charm and I didn't hate it, but it's not really for me. Tip of the cap for El Paso, though, which is a brilliant song and immediately brought me back to watching Breaking Bad.

pretty fun for what it is

Nej tack. Rätt trist country. Inte min kopp te alls.

I was in a 60s mood today. After listening to a random 60s playlist, I remembered this project and came to find a 60s album. Unfortunately this one didn't really hit the spot.

Nope. Couldn’t get into this. Not my thing.

I was once in a semi-fictional band called Nevermind Mr Bear, and this is what we aspired to be. Unfortunately we lost all our music when MySpace ‘accidentally’ fucked up their data migration. This is good at first and then every song is the same!

It’s country, but not the kind I hate. This is bearable.

What I expected to hear: cowboy music What I heard: cowboy music, I did recognize El Paso If you like cowboy/country/western music you will love this album. I don't, so this was a tough one to get through.

Western, country music. I can't say it's bad, but couldn't make it to the end of the album. 3/10

Buster Scruggs the musical.

I had never heard of Marty Robbins, I am not interested in western vibes of music. I was shocked that I knew a song from the album “Big Iron” and that was pretty catchy. I probably won’t give this album another listen, but maybe it will be good small talk with my grandpa

Just wasn't my thing

I don't really like it but my horse kinda likes it so it's a 2
