Reviews (page 10 of 13)
Ok mas com certeza tem uns 700 álbuns que poderiam estar no lugar desse
Oh it’s that one song I’ve heard a few times! So that’s who sings it. Otherwise a pretty bland album.
- it was fun - idk it didnt make a strong impression on me for some reason - lots of class commentary in the lyrics i think - there wasnt really anything in the music that grabbed me idk - it was good it was good
Okay musically, but the lyrics were too much moody ruminating over women they seemed to hate
New to Brit pop but Jarvis always brings it.
favourite song was the last one, this sound not really for me, but can see why certain parts of it appeal
Pretty meh.
Super 80s. Loved Pandora but was underwhelmed by most of the rest of the album..
After reading the other reviews apparently I need to listen to the lyrics. I usually don't which is why I like some music that others don't and vice versa. Lyrics aside (obviously), I thought this was a bog standard album that I most likely will never hear again. I'm glad I didn't "hear" the lyrics. I may not have gotten through it.
Always had this nailed as a ‘great album’. Possibly one of those albums that I’ve always thought was ‘cool’ to love. Have listened to tracks off this regularly and love them. Not listened to the entire album for maybe 10-15 years. A few bangers with largely forgettable fillers. Disappointed - I realise why I didn’t listen to the whole album anymore 3.2
Wouldn't listen again, but definitely catchy.
3.5
Not my kind of music but it was ok
I love Disco 2000 (only song I already knew), it’s awesome.
This was weird, and new to me. It's anthemic and has a show tunes quality I think. Not something I will go back to but it was a fun listen.
Hit the nostalgia bone, but I was never a big fan of them. Nice to know I've 'done the album though'
Was gonna give 2 but there are more songs on here than “common people” definitely a time period album but still good.
Good but not quite for me
A bit boring for my tastes--Britpop isn't my cup of musical tea outside of some Oasis and Blur tracks. Common People is of course a classic song, though, and I appreciate the trail this blazed for many other Britpop acts to follow.
By no means is this a bad album. Many of the songs on the album are very good, and sonically none of the songs on this album sound bad or are mixed poorly, but on the whole this album failed to keep my attention throughout. Maybe I'll listen to it again and feel better about it, but right now it's just a high-mid album. Underwear is great, Common People feels like something right out of a Talking Heads project (in a good way), but a lot of the other songs, while good sounding, didn't keep me engaged enough to call this album anything better than an 8/10
A few good songs, too long
Good but not great
Pulp sounded very Bowie-ish with the vocals and music, lyrics were a bit out there and I could Father John Misty drawing inspiration from their music. Wasn't a bad album, but a little artsy for my taste.
Very Bowie-esque, not that that’s a bad thing. Getting whiffs of ABBA too. So goddamn European. Reminds me of Mama Mia for some reason.
me gusta, lo he guardado en mi biblioteca de amazon music
okay obscurist
I think some silly geese wrote this. 3.5/5
Nice
I like Common people and Something Changed
Not my favorite
Lead singer Jarvis Cocker gives a lot of good performances on this album. And they feel like performances in the acting sense of the word. He takes on a lot of different characters, many of them unsavory and sleazy men who pine after women they can't have. The lyrics are sharp and witty, and he really commits vocally. The pop side of the songwriting is strong. There's good hooks and strong melodies. And the band is capable of a bunch of different styles. In general, I don't know if this is the sort of music I'd play on my own but I was impressed with it overall.
I like the sound of this from the start. The singer reminds me of Britt Daniel from Spoon (while obviously coming much before Spoon), and I love that band. The actual instrumentals behind the vocals are great too, it's dynamic, with great energy and cool ideas. I specifically love their use of dominant chords; it sounds like they are constantly shifting you forward into a new measure without making you sit around and wait too long to see what comes next. You're in THEIR car. I'm hearing a lot of my favorite indie rock bands in this, like the aforementioned Spoon, and also Okkervil River. I wouldn't be surprised if they were fans of this band. I feel like I could be a fan of this band and I will definitely be giving more listens.
Rather forgettable
Not a Brit pop fan. That said, a few of these caught my attention, briefly.
Was fine but not really my cup of tea.
captured the mid 90s brit pop oeuvre very well. common people always gets a sing along
pretty near but gets a lil boring
I’m really just here for Common People, the rest was fine but nothing stood out as different
This was fine, but nothing extraordinary, at least to me.
This is a band I've never really listend to for some reason. And I think I missed out. I like their sound. Easy to listen to. Lead vocals often remind me of Bowie.
Fun glam rock with some great songs mixed in with more average ones. This thing is VERY frontloaded tho
I know "Common People" but don't know any other Pulp songs. I'll admit that I actually prefer the William Shatner cover of that song though. I'm looking forward to this today to learn more about Pulp. This album had some cool moments and some profoundly annoying moments. Strong opener in "Mis-shapes" and then immediately annoyed by "Pencil Skirts" - the creepy lounge thing didn't work for me here, maybe it would work better for me if Shatner was talk-singing this one. "Common People" is such a great song, but I prefer the bombastic Shatner cover, the instrumentation and his rage filled performance sell this song a lot harder than Cocker's breathy whine. "I Spy" and "Disco 2000" are both okay, some cool moments. "Live Bed Show" has a cool slinky beat, the creepy lounge crooner vibes work better here than on "Pencil Skirts". The "ooooh oooh" parts in these songs are surprises but probably would make for a fun sing along if I was really familiar with all of these. "Something Changed" is a fine tune. "Sorted for E's and Wizz" sounds pretty different from the rest of the album, it has a psychedelic back sound under a very poppy track a la some Flaming Lips tunes, and is very explicitly about drug/rave culture. "FEELINGCALLEDLOVE" is 6 minutes - it starts out spoken word over a throbbing menacing riff and then poppy synths stab about halfway through and launch a fun chorus that gives way to more spoken word that resolves with plaintive singing and piano before another big pop chorus that involves spelling out the name of the song. This one is a pretty fun listen. "Underwear" is a sad jam about infidelity and committing to saying the words "underwear" and adding to the record long tally of using "girl and boy" which has really stood out to me for some reason. "Monday Morning" has a bit of a Ska bop to it at moments. It's decent. "Bar Italia" is a good poppy closer.
Pulps Disco 2000: can I copy your homework The Clashs Lost in the Supermarket: sure just don't make it obvious
Lead has a appealing voice, music goes on where it shouldn't. Lyrics are a little too high school love lost for me. Its good as an example of this type of music but not my thing.
Alright, the lyrics were a bit creepy at times
Nothing really pops out when listening to this album. Sounds fine. Would put on during a social gathering where you need some music, but not worried about guests singing along. Low 3
Ça sent le col roulé et et les chaussettes qui grattent, une nostalgie mal placée me submerge à l’écoute de l’album. C’est pas mal réalisé, juste peu original.
David Bowie and Pink Floyd sounding. Different Class alright lol
90s Brit rock. Catchy, occasionally.
Not bad. Not finished but so far so good.
exactly what i thought it would sound like. i really have exactly nothing to say, it's just classic pulp - i did add more songs to my playlist than i thought i would though considering this is not usually my genre of choice.
Quality.
Takie plumkanie gitarkowe
not sure how i feel about this one. i know it is very acclaimed but i am not feeling that very much. i don't think it's bad, but i don't think it rises to the level of quality i expect from something so acclaimed. not very interesting and the songwriting didn't really move me. ultimately, a pretty average listen for me.
Enjoyed it, kinda reminded me of something else... Just can't recall...
Mix of good ok and shit songs.
Good tunes but lyrics are like emo before emo. 3.5 but rounding down
Reminded me of Elliot Smith. Had some good alt hippy vibes. Vocals were a little all over the place for my taste but still interesting
oh fuck yeah makes me feel like making a mixtape for my lover made a sandwich listening to ispy and i felt like i shouldn’t be wait hold up disco 2000!!! will finish when im not rotting in bed
Lo que se dice, medio pelo, al menos para la época o el brit pop
I can see how this is a well liked album. It’s poppy catchy and upbeat. It fits the sentiment of the 90s when things were going well. I’ve never heard it before probably because it’s British altpop. This seems like the kind of album that was really only popular in Britain. The 90s were full of pop music so maybe this just didn’t make it across the pond. Overall it’s alright. 6.4/10
Góð plata. Bæti Common people á playslistann👍🏻
Sooo British. 5/5 to the Common People song, meh to the rest
Good 90s album - decent hits, not to memerable though
Everything about this album’s sound should throw me off, yet somehow I find myself really enjoying the journey and songwriting in a melancholy/emo/punk way.
Very enjoyable, Jarvis Cocker's vocals add a lot of warmth.
See The Real Thing Faith No More for the accidental rating comments. Different Class 3, Faith No more totally unlistenable 0 oh I guess that's a one. I gotta turn it off.
Mid 90’s Brit Rock with some orchestral backup
Something about Mis-Shapes is so familiar despite never hearing this album or any song on it before. It's Bowie esque? I don't think any part of the album hits a 5/5 for me, moments reach 4/5 but it's mostly around a 3/5.
While familiar with this album for years, I had never given it a proper listen other than to my three favorite songs: Disco 2000, Something Changed, and, of course, Common People. I can’t say that I found another song that I liked as much as these three, but I also know I’d need more time with this album than I really gave to it. So I’m scoring it 3 (I really wanted to score it 3.5), knowing that it has the potential to be a 4.
7/10
Pretty rocky, some sorta interesting riffs
A Wednesday fan! I like this record. Reminds of Bowie’s voice, and he seems like he’d be fun to drink pints with.
Sounds alot like David Bowie, did enjoy it alot. Very 90s sounding with the Britpop heavy
I've definitely listened to this album before but not sure if I've ever sat down and listened to it in full. It's really solid, though not necessarily one of the Britpop albums I grew up listening to, so I don't have a strong nostalgic attachment to it. There are some really strong standouts that I love ('Common People' of course and 'Mis-Shapes'). Aside from these tracks I liked the album but wouldn't say I call it essential. I'm kind of leaning between a 3 or 4/5. Standout Tracks: Mis-Shapes, Pencil Skirt, Common People, Disco 2000, Something Changed, Bar Italia
Not a band I was super familiar with, but knew them from general conversation on the Brit Pop resurgence. Generally well constructed songs but the sneer is fairly heavy on the vocals. Good harmonies
2,5 ster.
Interesting. Generally enjoyed their sound and style
Really funny and good.
Well I can definitively say that I like British pop more than American pop. That is a pretty low bar though. I liked some of the more up tempo songs like Monday Morning. There were some uncomfortable songs like Common People and Underwear that I didn't like as much. Overall most of the songs were just okay. It was all pretty forgettable at the end of the day.
Liked it
not really ctazy
Fine
Lyrically this hasn’t aged great overall. The big hits are some of the best Britpop has to offer. The album cuts were mostly misses for me although there were a couple great ones (Mis-Shapes really jumps out). Overall….fine? I’ll probably just pick the amazing tracks out instead of revisiting the record as a whole even though their sound of very pleasing for me.
A little generic and cheesy, but fine, I guess. I only listened to the first two songs - YouTube wasn’t working for some reason.
Didn't love this one. Some interesting bits, but overall too theatrical for me.
Very British. Do they have a house in the middle of the street? I know common people. "I spy" reminds me of HIM.
Kinda cool tbh
This album didn't make much of an impression. I was tempted to give it two stars but if it was actively bad, I'd probably have a stronger impression of it. It shows the bias of the 1001 author -- yet another UK band that is somehow important to him, but it's not an album that really has anything to recommend it.
I will need to give this multiple listens before I can give an honest rating.
Just an ok listen for me. Lots of Bowie in this vocalist. I feel like this is a "you had to be there" album.
First time listening to this album, having been about 20 when it first came out. Its okay wouldnt' go back to it in a hurry.
Did not like it at first, but it grew on me towards the end.
Not my vibe
3/5 - I was a baby when people first listened to this. I am a baby while people listen to this now
Too much 90's britpop on here, but this is some of the best
all pulp, all the time
Should have been bigger than Oasis in the States. They seemed to be ahead of their time for years until finally they became of their time. It's not their fault that many of their Britpop imitators sucked.
Sounds modern despite being almost 30yo.
I’m reading the reviews.. one of the best albums of all time.. and I just don’t get it.. It’s not bad, it’s just.. there. I can’t see myself ever listening to this again.
Clever and original. Quite British.
It's good, just not something I would press play on
Annoying at first but it grew on me. Kinda 80s nostalgic. His voice reminds me of roger waters
ok...but sounds dated for a 1995 record
not bad but not great. We've had a bit of british new-wave-y stuff lately and I was maybe a bit burnt out on it? Nonetheless there was some good stuff in here. From a 'cultural context' perspective none of it felt as important as anything Oasis was doing in this same time period. Maybe this was the 'intellectuals' choice but IMHO it didn't hold up over time as well as Oasis did.
Not bad
Didn’t hate it
Only really preciously familiar with the hit Common People of which I’m a big fan so daft i haven’t paid enough attn to the rest of the record. Getting bits of Roxy music and Bryan ferry. Then suddenly Nick cave. Some great lyrics that made me want to go back and listen more closely. Only reason not 4 is cos I’m feeling too music slutty giving them out too freely. Probably coz I’m 🗿
Never heard of the band but album was good.
Opposite to This Is Hardcore which was solid throughout but with no stand outs.. .this has 4 great tunes and then a load of naff nonsense
Ok Britpop. Not sure why all the critical acclaim. Give me Oasis over this any day of the week!
This was just fine. Not very interesting musically and very British. It shouldn't be on the list but i'm not surprised at this point.
# 53 : British Pop of the nineties. Pretty ordinary for the genre. Still good rhythm and melody with some good tracks and other fillers. 2 1/2 to 3 stars. Disco 2000
Some songs were a bit out there, but overall, it was an alright album. 3/5
Fine
closer to my vibe
Band DbD said had gone to see live, not sure I'd make the same decision. They have a sound that hasn't dated the best.
Common People!
Pretty decent ig
This was just ok - I can't say I fell in love with it or songs jumped out at me. Like most britpop, it sounds all the same. 6/10.
3.5; rounding down because I liked it but I wouldn't listen again
Was not super thrilled to get a Britpop album on this. But as far as Britpop goes, this seems like one of the better ones. Just fine to listen to.
Ish.
The lyrics are a bit cringey at times, otherwise an okay album.
Some good pieces but all in all just an average album.
Es peor que el otro que escuché de Pulp, "This is hardcore". Tiene buenas intenciones pero me aburre un poco. Es como un The Cure más movido y con menos estilo.
Definitional Britpop. Has a fairly 80's feel but matures out of it well enough. It's lyrics center around sex, social class, nostalgia, and regret. Standouts are "Common People" and "Disco 2000."
The singer from ImaRobot must have been heavily inspired by the singer of Pulp.
Not my jam. Technically fine, but found most of the tracks shared a sonic sameness that didn't really grab me.
Danny Elfman cosplaying as a vampy emo David Bowie at times, overall left me cold.
it was good i don’t think 90’s rock is for me but it definitely had some good parts
Leuke plaat, Britpop ten voeten uit. Ik had hem nog nooit gehoord, maar hij is bijzonder de moeite waard.
Some good songs, but these dudes are creepy.
I guess this is okay.
Apart from "Common People" the album is pretty average.
It was fine, I liked the beginning of the album more than the later songs.
I definitely enjoyed this more this time around than when it was brand new. This was hyped as one of the best Britpop albums, but it sounded and felt like something out of the '80s to me, which was a turn off at the time. I still don't love that aspect of it now, but Jarvis is an interesting singer and songwriter. I could see this returning to this to dive in deeper at some point.
This is the definition of bland british rock
I had a feeling that this was going to be British rock based on the cover. Sounds like music that would be in the background of that one Teen Titans villain who I only remember for the hypnotism and being very British. It's not awful but man is it pretty generic. There are a few songs that stand out above the rest, but overall it isn't really capturing me. Honestly, it's probably closer to a strong 2/5, but for the sake of it not being super off-putting it's a low 3/5 This is why having a 5-star system is a detriment in this regard. Some of my 3s are a lot better than others. Though most people don't use the 10 point system well so I see the merit of the 5 star system.
This is some great britpop. To the extent that it mixes all the good parts of what bands like Oasis and Blur we’re doing with the subtle cockiness the band got known for.
britpop
Pretty good.
OK.
It was fine. Certainly more enjoyable that This is Hardcore, which I hated. Just another so-so, questionable addition to the list but definitely not offensive to the ears.
i enjoyed it, but also forgot everything about it minutes after listening. except common people. common people gets a whole star just for itself
An okay album. Very Brit-pop arrangements with dramatic vocals. Favorite Songs: Pencil Skirt and Disco 2000
Not bad but I’m just not a Brit pop fan. But it has some catchy Melodies
Being a 6 Music listener, I know some of the tracks on this album all too well. "Sick To Death Of" might be a bit harsh, but I had to fast forward through a couple. I did quite enjoy the tracks I hadn't heard before though. Like it, don't love it 😊
Brits are weird. I'm not sure how I've never heard of them but it was interesting.
Pulp - Different Class - 1995 Holy shit. I didn’t know that William Shatner’s album “Has Been” was based on a cover from this Pulp album. To be fair, I had never heard of this band until today. I only knew about the Shatner album because Henry Rollins is featured on a track. It is a funny album. I might like it more than this album. It’s not that this isn’t a good album, but more that it just reminds me of the Shatner album and now that is all I want to listen to. Apple Music’s Editors’ Notes include “…”Common People” is probably the greatest U.K. No. 2 single since Strawberry Fields Forever.” The UK in the 90’s must have been insufferably boring. This album was alright. Kind of boring. Common People, Disco 2000, and Monday Morning are stand out tracks. 3 out of 5 stars Shatner’s version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ainyK6fXku0
Not really, my style, but I’ll give it an extra star for at least keep in my interest the whole way through
Some of the songs had a fun energy and showcased a few different styles but the album as a whole was somewhat forgettable.
- Grows on you - Corny but the good kind - bangers on extremities
Britpop. Un megahit. Ni fu ni fa.
It's giving me Rocky Horror Picture Show vibes. I'd describe it as emo glam. Very theatric. Makes me want to put a cigarette in one of those long holders, sip some absinthe, and lounge around on my velvet furniture.
Common People is the stand out hit for a reason. I enjoyed the album but I'm not sure I'd add it into regular rotation.
I liked some of it, but most of it was too theatrical for my taste. It could have been my mood though.
Pretty good, some weird spoken word parts but overall decent album
I like it
Feel like I should like this album more than I do. Common people is kind of a banger
Common people is such a bop. Enjoyed the rest of the album as well.
This is one of those 1995 albums I wish I had known about in 1995! I would have really loved this mix of Brit pop and early Indie with some great, catchy tracks. That said, it is not the sort of thing I'm drawn to these days for whatever reason. I liked it, at times liked it a lot, but did not love it. 3.5 rounded down because I don't see myself listening to this one again.
Better than I expected, worth another play some time
3/5, an incredibly mixed album for me. I really liked Sorted for E's and Whizz, Something Changed, Bar Italia, and Disco 2000, but the rest of the album wasn't my thing. I don't think I'm a fan of the synth sounds of the era, and the lead singer was WAYYYY too horny for an entirely comfortable listen.
Catchy and energetic album with a nostalgic sound. But was all that moaning really necessary? Favorite track: Disco 2000
Common People is fine. Solid late 80's/early 90's feel. Nothing else stuck out.
Ok Brit pop, listen was ok, not sure I would listen again
I struggled to process this one. It grew on me a bit after repeated listens. They had moments of NIN, The Cure, Suede - all bands I like - but I couldn't quite get into this. It was all decent to good. Very consistent. But there was something missing for me. Maybe they were just too British. The longer spoken word stuff was really the only thing I can point to that I didn't like, but even that was still tolerable. 6/10 for me.
It was bumpin. Vibes
A passable update on glam rock for the 90s. The overwrought emotion of Jarvis Cocker's delivery and lyrics gets a little tiresome but most of the songs are pretty good. 3 stars
This album grabbed me from the start, but then kind started letting me down as it progressed. So, I didn't love it throughout, but it was good overall.
Am I the only one that's confused by the fact that there is Pulp but then there is also Blur? Those are pretty much the same word, right? I love Common People (Shatner's cover with Joe Jackson is one of my favorite things on earth) and I got excited about I Spy and Disco 2000 the first time through. But then I was kind of bored by the rest of the album and, listening again, even Spy and Disco'd lost some of their luster.
fav song is pencil skirt lyrics are so sus tho
some songs have a musical type delivery, different from what i would usually listen to fav song: i spy (drifting in a convertible on the freeway, on a mission), live bed show (can relate sadly)
I mean, it’s ok
Classic from my youth
Never, ever heard of them. Based on the album cover, I wasn't expecting the music that I heard. I really took to it quickly. Very catchy pop songs, that aren't "too pop". Really good. I look forward to hearing more of this one. 3/5
I think "Sorted for Es and Whizz" was the first cassette single I bought. I remember listening to it with my Dad at the Barnstaple tip. I don't think either of us really understood what it was about, but I do now! I'm not sure time has been kind to this album as a whole. Lyrically it's great, but the music sucks.
Liked this one a lot few years ago, but somewhat disappointing to hear it again. So how should this be rated....
Because Cocker remains a public image, one can't but wonder what he'd make of this album today. For what it is, and when it was, it is what theorists would describe as social observation. And for that, it is very good. The recurrence of key themes – lust, longing, betrayal – does make one wonder about the lives of others (the singer/songwriter other). In the UK, the working class narrative is under constant threat from the imperative to social advancement – an aspiration that sort of elides the uncomfortable that that this kind of hierarchy is relative, rather than absolute. If we could all become middle class, then we'd be living in a class-inflected Ponzi scheme. As it is, Cocker's biography strongly suggests that he has leapfrogged (by way of talent, and positioning, aided by that impenetrable variable which is public taste) to a point that (thanks to the surrounding eco-system, not by way of conscious intent on his part) would frame him something close to a class traitor. This is rubbish, of course. But this album does seem firmly bedded in a tribal understanding of social interaction. I ramble. This is still worth listening to, even if the Brit Pop context and the social critique are somewhat worn now...
I found myself enjoying this more than I thought I would. But, their version of Common People pales in comparison to the brilliance that is the William Shatner / Ben Folds version.
Generally catchy, unremarkable pop, but with some of the horniest lyrics and vocal performances. Songs range from angst-washed to sultry.
Pretty good, but as an american its sooooooooo british it hurts. 3/5
Probablement le meilleur album de britpop que j'ai eu. Des bangers par ci par là.
Will listen again, save a few songs
Pretty solid English rock.
It was ok. Not exceptional
British bias
Britpop. Un megahit. Ni fu ni fa.
Leuk voor één keer, maar ik zou het niet vaker opzetten.
Jarvis Cocker's vocals are so polarizing. So often he sounds like a condescending twat (to use a British word) with his half whisper and part speaking style. But other times it sounds energetic and perfectly cheeky, like on Common People (a quintessential Brit Pop tune and a classic with its combo of rock/pop/synth and witty lyrics). Other songs that bring that nicely blend Pulp's sound with Cocker's vocals and lyrics are Disco 2000 and Mis-Shapes, maybe Monday Morning too. But I do find it a bit creepy how much an early 30's guy is singing about sex where the protagonists are seemingly teenagers. Ultimately, while this album has its highs, it also feels boring or repetitive. A little too uneven for me.
A lot of fun, a little too long.
The instrumentals on this album were nice. But why was every song about sex? Favorite track: Mis-Shapes
A glimpse into the powerlessness and the resulting anger of the lower class
I dont know what to say. A sort of mixture of Bowie and something like that. Common People is a pretty good song.
At the first couple songs I thought "Nice, David Bowie vibe", After a while I got bored and preferred listening to David Bowie
Some interesting but also quite some boring parts
Wasn't a chore but don't think I'll listen to it again.
I'm probably more in the 2 and 1/2 range here, but it's Halloween so they're getting the extra half star. Just like I'm gonna get an extra half of a Reese's cup, baby! I don't think any of the other songs come close to touching "Common People" with a ten meter (because it's the UK) pole. But I liked having this on in the background. "F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E." made me perk up, despite how annoying it was to type out that song title just now.
I felt this album had weird sensual energy. Maybe it would work for me on a different day, but it was an odd listen in the middle of my work day that's for sure.
Thought I would like this album more based off of 'Common People' All-in-all, not bad not great
7/10
Common people is really good, I enjoyed this more than other British bands
Not my kind of music but great cover and sound if you like the cure
Light pulp
There’s a lot of good stuff here but always thought this guy was kind of full of himself
sounds like bowie
Wish I could give half points.
I’m not sure who thought it was a good idea to put Elvis Costello doing David Bowie impressions for a Cure album on this list, but thanks! I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would.
3/12, 25%
Conoscevo solo la canzone common people. Non proprio il mio genere (troppi suoni pop) ma i testi molto belli. Comunque sono molto bravi anche a suonare.
I thought the album was mildly interesting but for the most part I found it a bit tame or bland. Not my style personally but not a bad album altogether 5/10.
Love it. It’s me all around - indie rock and horny vibes! Notable songs: I spy gave me phantom of the opera vibes… love. the rest was meh but I got distracted, will relisten properly another time but w/e. mum’s birthday too but she never rlly liked pulp
smooth. - Common People -I Spy (creepy but good) -Underwear
Pretty good, liked it a lot more the second listen. Favorites: Mis-Shapes, Common People. Least favorite: Underwear
A lot of this reminded me of Roger Waters/the wall(forget which song but had Waiting for the Worms vibes). This was solid I enjoyed listening to this throughout, I thought the beginning was very strong and I really liked Live Bed Show
Nice sound, the vocals reminded me just a bit of toger waters, the lyrics were a bit rough tho.
In the US during 90s Pulp kind of got buried by Oasis, Blur and other likeminded bland Britpop groups because other than the few standouts, they all sound the same. Pulp's Different Class falls into that line and extends into the 'If David Bowie first came to fame in the 90s this is what he'd sound like' sound. It's not bad, it's not groundbreaking, it's just okay and thats not too bad. P.S. the William Shatner version of Common People is the best version. 3/5.
• I had already heard Common People • The vocalist shines when he sings loudly, in the higher register, rather than the low whisper he tends to use • I Spy’s slow beginning isn’t my favourite but when it picks up it gets a lot better • Disco 2000 is also very good • A lot of the (non love-related) lyrics remind me of Gorillaz • Many songs on the album don’t particularly stand out on a first listen, though I can see them becoming easier to recognise on further listens. Favourite song: Common People
Was good, never heard of them.
oasis sans la nostalgie
If you have heard common people you have heard the album
Despite being a child of the 90s, I had never heard of this band or album. It was fine, but didn't particularly stand out for me. I'm not super well educated in Brit Pop but I can think of a lot of albums from that era that I did enjoy more than this one. Almost certainly a case if I had heard this 25 years ago I'd feel differently.
My immediate knee-jerk reaction was "meh, another so-so '90s Brit rock group." Thankfully, that first impression was incorrect. There's some quality music on here, much of it pointedly aimed at the frivolous and out of touch upper class. "Common People" was the first song to get my attention (and is probably my favorite song on the album). The line "I took her to a supermarket" was what tipped me off to Pulp's sense of humor. They're theatrical and the album tackles a key inequity in the modern world, but they're not taking themselves too seriously, either. That's a combination I respect. Sonically, they sound like sort of a precursor to The Killers, but they're not afraid to dip into whatever genre suits them. "Disco 2000" was obviously inspired by Laura Branigan's "Gloria"--it's not every band that says "Hey, let's do a disco track." But it fits the album and their self-aware sense of humor. Not sure how many of these tracks will end up in my rotation, but this was a surprisingly solid album.
a couple of good singles and a lot of filler, ambitious but I don't really respond to that ironic tone
assez bon, je kiffe le chanteur
Pop elegante y bien elaborado. Un poco en la onda de Oasis y Blur. Tranquilo, fácil de escuchar y sin mucha complicación.
Not my cup of tea, prefer Blur for brit-pop. It's aight 😐
The melodies of a lot of the songs didn’t grab me enough to want to pay attention to the lyrics and themes, which made me tune out as the album progressed. I also struggled with Jarvis Cocker’s vocal delivery. I like that he channels David Bowie and Bryan Ferry, but he doesn’t always sound like he is in tune; and his whispered, spoken vocals are particularly grating. This is a shame, because I really liked ‘This Is Hardcore’ and was hoping for a similar experience. A mixed bag then, not without merit, just probably not for me. Still better by anything than Blur though.
Easily forgettable album with all the other new wave on the list. Other than Common People, the rest of the songs get annoying and the vocals became a bit irritating. I hesitate to give it a 2, but it is definitely a lower 3.
Fun
Don't know why this doesn't gel with me maybe its a bit too snarky. And twee. 3/4 big hits from the middle of that awful Blair/Britpop era. Lots of clever smutty lyrics. A couple of songs drag on too long.Umm don't know what else to say really. 3.
Un autre album de pop rock anglais. C’est bien et peut etre un peu meilleur que d’autres sur cette liste. Ca reste que ce n’est pas dans mon registre. J’ai quand mem passe un beau oment. 3.85
Pretty good album for British pop
I really enjoyed this one. Love the combination of british rock and synthesizers.
2 hits, rest meh
Better than previous Pulp albums. Still probably my least favorite of the bigger brit pop bands. 3/5
Would give it 4.5 if I could, but can't give it 4.
Cocker is an evocative lyricist. I, however, have never been a lyrics person. The intentionally kitsch sound is charming
While I do like Common People (and the Shatner version is the BEST!) the rest of the album doesn’t excite me.
Stars pretty good. Another example of not recognizing a popular song when loading the album and then going "Oh shit, thats that one song". Really falls off at the back half
Couple of absolute classics but the rest was kinda meh
I only had a chance to listen to this once. As far as hits go Common People is quite good. I also like FEELINGCALLEDLOVE. The rest I'd have to listen to again. Jarvis Cocker writes clever lyrics.
sounds like a lot of 90's brit pop, it's ok.
The music is pretty good, although not very original. The lyrics are really uninspiring.
6/10. Some okay songs, in a pervy British guy way
Mercury Prize for biggest snooze fest. 5/10
Sounds like Bowie. Isn't Bowie.
New to Pulp, cringed for a minute over nore British pop but they got me! My highlights! Pencil Skirt & F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E.
first listen some great songs but the rest is kinda filler
Loved the first third, then it got into pretty generic Brit rock (still good), and then boring ballads to close the album.
Interesting artefact - didn't listen to it then, only really heard of Common People - probably won't listen to it again - but glad I listened to it for this
This was a strange album - it started out as kinda standard 90s UK pub rock, then around the second half it became this real Gen X 80s pop rock stuff, still pretty pub-bound I guess but was weird. I did mostly enjoy it though. 55min is too long, but hey. Still a solid 3/5.
I enjoyed his as I remember the singles from this album from when it was released. I wasn't blown away by the other tracks on the album but it was pleasant to listen to.
Aw bloody crumpets, god save the queen. Some of the lyrics aren't really winners. Too much pervy stalky sex stuff. It was pretty good overall, but this must be the most uncomfortable album to play on your speakers around other people. When "Feeling Called Love" ended, I was like "Well that was pretty uncomfortable. Surely the next song won't be that creepy!" And then I saw the next song was titled "Underwear".
It's fine for what it is. It could've used a little shorter of a runtime in my opinion, but I did like it, even though I didn't completely like every single song, it is a complete and digestive project that's enjoyable if you already like the genre. 3.5/5
give common people its 5/5, but the rest is nowhere close
Hadn't heard this one before but I went out and bought it. Has a very Kinks kind of vibe.
Enjoyed underwear.
Wasn’t as bad as I thought. In fact I quite enjoyed some tracks so 3*
Notes: 1. This is a pretty good album. 2. So, let's talk about the songs where the listener is getting lectured to by the breathy voiced singer... They made me a touch uncomfortable. Aside from that, this is the best Space Hog album I've heard in a few years. Keep it up!
Not seeing what's so amazing about this. Good to mediocre.
Britpop is not my thing, but this album has a lot of fun songs, specially Mis-Shapes and Common People. I guess people who enjoy Oasis and Blur will also enjoy this. Favorite tracks: * Mis-Shapes * Dance 2000 * Common People
Começou um pouco barulhento pro meu gosto, mas estou achando ok agora. Bom pra lavar louças ou fazer faxina, mas não seria meu go to album.
svona lala
I've never really listened to Pulp before (outside of that one song that was on the Venture Bros. - which I liked a lot), but this is pretty good. Better than Blur and significantly better than Oasis. I was starting to think there was no hope for Britpop.
I enjoyed the songs that auto played after the album more than the album, but it was pretty good.
Liked it as an instrumental album
Blur and Oasis are certainly the most popular acts in britpop, but Pulp is the most britpop act in britpop. They're also VERY horny, which I don't like. Otherwise, the songs are alright and serve the genre pretty well.
jarvis cocker comes off as a weird fragile pervert but he writes some good songs.
A very average album. Some highs, some lows, and lots of in between. Nothing particularly bad, but nothing particularly good either.
If you've not yet heard William Shatner's version of "Common People", do yourself a favor.
Beetje wennen. Teksten vooralsnog scherper dan de muziek.
Some Brit pop goodness, but not the best Brit pop
Not bad
'When you raise your pencil skirt, like a veil before my eyes' fucking love that lyric. Common People is obviously an absolute jam, big fan of that song so was awesome to listen to on a Monday morning, Disco 2000 comes second to that. Really didn't like the song I Spy. F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E is a sensual song, tense af. Now, the album cover, I'm not sure how I feel about it, I love a wedding so that's plus points I guess but the white border on the background is not a vibe and is quite dated (i mean it is for 1995 so I'll let it slide). 6/10
Can't really get the greatness in it, but at least it's not bad.
Good enough
Rock
Some standard Brit pop for me
A very fine if not totally generic Brit Rock album from the 90s. Does what it says on the tin.
This is a pretty good album that I liked, but didn't love. I think the sometimes too theatrical presentation kept me from really loving it. Common People is a great song as well as Monday Morning and FEELINGCALLEDLOVE also had a feel that I really enjoyed the rest of the album had moments but nothing that reached the levels as these three songs. 3.75 🌟
leuk
Muy noventero. Lo mejor es la portada
This just doesn't cut the mustard for me anymore. Don't get me wrong, Common People and Disco 2000 are two of the greatest songs ever but the rest of the album just doesn't grab me in the same way it used to. It all feels very comfortable and on one level in the way that those two epic singles aren't. I don't particularly enjoy Jarvis' voice too. Nothing I can exactly lay my finger on. It just lightly grates at times. Though this album had a special place in my heart for a few years so it well warrants my attention
Not sure ..
Eh, had a hard time getting into it. Brit rock pop stuff... not really for me.
Common People is a classic. Pretty decent album.
Some good songs in there, some good lyrics, but as an album the result is a bit too monotonous. Either that or I just don't dig the sound that much.
I've been appreciating Britpop a lot more of late - no doubt due to this fantastic 1001 exercise. In general - and Pulp here absolutely follows suit - there is such an emphasis on melodic progressions which I am a sucker for. For this Pulp album, songs like "Mis-shapes" and "Disco 2000" just ring out with irresistible sing-song melodies - so much that I like and appreciate about song structure is wrapped up in these. Yet...I find that my problem with Pulp is not necessarily Jarvis Cocker's voice, it's perhaps his manner of singing on many of the songs ("I Spy") that can prove ...difficult? - actually it's the combination of style and lyrics, and as a listener who finds that lyrics should serve as a "get in & get out of the way" piece rather than sitting right up top as the main focus, they're FAR too often a distraction. The verses in "F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E" annoyed me so much - dry right-up-in-your-head vocals but once the song kicks in I like it - so what the hell am I supposed to think about this? The weird lyrics to "Underwear" kinda wreck what I love about the music in this song. I'm going to have to give this another few spins - as of now 3 stars but almost disappointing; I feel like this album wasthisclose to being great for me. Freaking lyrics, man... 6/10 3 stars
Good album…becoming a fan of pulp
British Pop is a thing, and yeah, a lot lighter than American pop I've heard in the past. Interesting that its also art rock.
Diggar! Bästa låtar: Common People Something Changed Disco 2000
Good vibes, but nothing super stood out to me. Favorite song: Bar Italia
Very good rock music, enjoyed it all the way through. This is the kind of music that I would love to put on while cooking food and having a beer. I'm tempted to give this a 4 but perhaps that's a bit too high, but it's definitely 3.5 / 5.
Not my cup of tea, but certainly not a bad album either
in...teresting lyrics?lol. eww his voice in the second song pls he's a weirdo. third song was better but i cant get into this sound. 4th track he's back to whispering xd Disco 2000 is the first song i kinda enjoy. WAIT I KNOW THIS SONG lmao. i've heard this on the radio a bunch yet i never knew the name of this band lol. mans got friendzoned all by himself. song sounds good could do without the word breasts though. ah i'm done, wasnt as bad as the first couple of tracks made me think it'd be, it's like a 2.5 but im feeling generous :P
weird lyrics, some bops
