Reviews (page 2 of 12)
I didn't expect to like it, love it that much, but this album is fire. And it's so so varied, with such great songs. The guitars are great, and Armatrading's voice is superb. As the album is. What a great discovery! There is so much soul in here, and a lot of attitude and fantastic taste. I'm very very delighted.
Very nice album great basslines. Kept me enganged
Whoooaaa this truly superb! Had no prior knowledge of this album but actually stoked to add this to my library. Not a single bad track. Perfect album
richtig geil folksy rock n roll country black woman magic
Wow I hadn't heard of her before so this completely took me surprise and it was incredible. Catchy, varied, full of heart and soul, absolutely superb. Loved it
This was amazing. I'd never heard of her work so I wasn't sure on what to expect, but I was hooked from the very first chords. I'm not the biggest folk rock fan out there, but it's clear that Joan didn't want to stick to a single genre or style in here, and is thus brimming with creativity and an eclectic approach to a handful of genres. I ended up loving this and it's this kind of discovery that I was expecting to make when I got into this site. The opening track is a perfect pick, and really sets the tone for the rest of the album. The following two tracks keep the fire up until "Love And Affection" which seems to be the most popular track in here, and for good reason. It's a wonderful track, with some jazzy resources and a great hook. I think there isn't a single bad song in here, but I do think that "Save Me" is the only one that doesn't stand out, specially being placed right after "Love and Affection". On this note, regarding the quality of the songs in here, I feel like the whole second half of the album is a sort of suite that builds up on different styles before it's natural culmination. So it's no wonder that my favorite tracks in here are "Join The Boys" and "Tall In The Saddle". "Join The Boys" is just so so great to listen to. It's got this very blues-y guitar riff but with a baseline that's so funky that it ends up creating a wonderful fusion of styles. I also love the interplay between the piano, bass and guitar, specially as the song builds up. Coming back around to the final track, it feels like the perfect conclusion to all the styles the album explored. It starts off like a nightly Blues and progressively evolves into a roots rock with some tasty jazz fusion textures spread throughout. It's an amazing album with a great taste for production, instrumentation, and writing. It's got most of what makes 70s Rock so engaging to me and I feel very grateful to have found it thanks to this site.
Enjoyed this one. Lyrics are more complex and worth the listen.
Unexpectedly perfect. Such a good album. Play it again Joan !
Would love to see the ft. Band live!
Never heard of her until now. Pleasant vocals and instrumental talent. Moody soulful vibe. Very nice. Understandable following. I like it.Tall in the saddle my favorite.
I actually can't believe I've never heard of Joan Armatrading, I loved this album so much. The songs are so well-crafted and the instrumentals go crazyyy. Her vocals are so amazing, and almost remind me of Nina Simone or Ella Fitzgerald on some tracks. I loved the first three songs on this album so much.
#267/1001. I do own Joan Armatrading's debut album, but somehow shelved it and haven't paid too much attention to her. But this album is the shit. Will come back to it and her music more. I guess comparisons to Joni Mitchell are relevant, not in a way that she would be copying her stuff, but in a way she creates her own way of writing and performing songs. Her musical styles are broader though, folk, jazz, blues, pop, soul, even funk all mingle here, but still everything fits together. Amazing akbum.
Wonderful album and artist. Way far from what I would seek out to listen and I am glad it has found its way to me.
Good memories! Hadn't listened to this album in ages!
Raw and emotional
Can't believe there's only 1 Armatrading album on this list when there are 3 Kanye West albums and Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit appear... Anyway, you can still enjoy what's in front of you
YASSSSS
Wow! Beautiful, well recorded. I had no idea
Never heard nor heard of before. Which in itself should be regarded as a crime to humanity.
ok this is gonna be incredible i know it down to zero help yourself--amazing. ahh i think she's the british tracy chapman water with the wine--oh yeah love and affection--ooooooh those backup vocals are so deep join the boys--oh this is a. g r o o v e. somebody who loves you--emotional lyrics, but does not sacrifice musical balance. the intentional pause before the next song is perfect to bring the song home. silence is an oft ignored musical element, but so impactful. like fire--like fire tall in the saddle--oooh love me a good slow ballad. her singing. the guitar solo. perfect. i don't know enough to say what genre this is--i'm inclined to say it's blues moving a bit towards r&b but really what do i know???? what i know is that this is a 6/5 album. joan balances the album perfectly between emotion and groove--and both at once--with impeccable vocals, guitar, organ, backup singers, the whole nine yards. coherent, lyrical and melodic.
-Beautiful album, easy-listening with unique and soulful vocals. -I was pleasantly surprised with almost every track being of consistent quality, and also surprised to find i recognised a few of the songs on the album -smooth and slow in some parts and energetic and fun in others
I really enjoyed this album, I usually don't check reviews before an album, but I had no idea who Joan Armatrading was, so I decided to look at the keywords. I can for sure hear the Chapman sound with the Joni Mitchell writing. It's got soft tender love, it's got upbeat groove/funk, and much to my delight, in thinking maybe a Temptations backing vocalist had an appearance, it was none other than Lester Freamon from The Wire on some backing vocals! There are even some short jam breakdowns that you could pull some progressive rock vibes out of. Very pleasant surprise, and one of the few artists to get a 5 out of me that I had no awareness of going in.
I loved this. I had heard a couple of the songs before, but never the whole album. Her voice is warm and soulful. 5/5
Banger after banger
Drop The Pilot was my introduction to Joan Armatrading and I had no Idea she had such an extensive catalog of albums. This is the first time listening to this one, and I'm in love with her all over again. Such an amazing voice and a talented artist.
What a discovery, I can't believe I never listened to Joan Armatrading. This is definitely a « coup de coeur ». Groovy, melodic, powerful vocals. I could even hear melodies I would argue other musicians eventually took to make giant hits. Super happy to have discovered her! will be listening to the rest of her discography.
no skips.
Joan Armatrading’s self-titled 1976 masterpiece is a stunning showcase of singer-songwriter brilliance, completely elevated and carried by her absolutely gorgeous, rich, and soulful voice. In lesser hands, the album's understated acoustic arrangements could have easily drifted into a dry or boring folk territory, but Armatrading injects the material with such warmth and emotional depth that it becomes an incredibly engaging and thoroughly pleasant listen. Her unique vocal phrasing transforms simple melodies into deeply moving experiences, proving that a truly captivating voice can turn standard folk conventions into something genuinely magical.
wonderful
This album has everything and I think I’ll be listening to this album on repeat for a while now
Pretty surprised ive never heard of this band before since it fits in perfectly with all the other 2010s indie music i listened to. His voice reminds me of Bombay Bicycle Club <3
These are the albums I love!
liked it, I don't really listen to music in this genre, but it was really good I really liked how Joan used her voice amazinggggg
Realllyyyy good. Fun voice with a nice rhythm behind the lyrics. Added to my library
freaking banger
This is right up my alley. I am sat in the library at college and nobody knows what absolute heat is playing through my headphones right now. This is the best album I’ve stumbled across so far, hence why this is also the longest review I’ve written yet (I’ve only been doing this for a couple months). This is the type of music that makes me want to ramble about nothing because I’m feeling everything. The bass is so damn good this is why i love music. WOOOOOOOOOOOO
This is why I started this list to begin with, finding out about awesome artists I've never heard of... Absolutely 🔥🔥🔥
TA É DOIDO provavelmente uns dos melhores albuns q ouvi dessa lista ate agora muito love mds eu amei
FAVE FAVE FAVE 🩷🩷
This album was beautiful to listen to with noise cancelling headphones on. So many layers and surprises that add plenty of texture to the amazing vocals make this album feel like it was way ahead of its time. Will definitely keep looking through Joan Armatrading's music.
fantastic record, far too good for me to have only been familiar with one song on it before listening
How have I never heard of her before, superb
Amazing! Loved it. Love and affection is my new favorite song.
My new favorite! I knew within 30 seconds that this album was special and it exceeded my expectations. Looking forward to more from Armatrading
Such a fun album
Day709 - what a pleasant surprise. i would never have listened to this and i kinda love it
норм пацик 8/10
Great. Love and Affection is such a great track.
Can’t believe I’d never heard of her!!
I’d never heard of Joan Armatrading before this. What a great discovery. I feel fortunate to have this be my it production to this great singer. The mix on this album is crisp yet warm at the same time. The funkier tracks are nice, but “Love and Affection” and “Somebody Who Loves You” are perfect tracks to my ears.
So good - so smooth yet it picks up with a great groove and fantastic vocals. Wonderful experience.
This one was a deep dive for me. I had forgotten about Joan Armatrading and how often I listened to her unique sound. Excellent album from start to finish.
Always happy to get assigned a female artist. Wow, great voice! Sounds a little like Cher at times. I love the funky songs; the mellow ones are fine but not my vibe. There's some great piano, guitar, drums, saxophone. Listened before? N Saved to library? Y Favorite track(s): Down To Zero, Water With The Wine, Join The Boys, People, Like Fire, Tall In The Saddle ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐: Loved it. Saved a bunch of tracks.
From the first vocal note I was IN LOVE with her voice. I had never heard a single song of hers and was so pleasantly surprised. Tracy Chapman comes to mind, but Joan’s vocals are smoother. Down to Zero, Love and Affection, Tall in the Saddle, & Join the Boys are favorites. Such an easy album to listen to.
Fuck it, I loved this. Kind of can't believe I hadn't heard of this, especially back when I really used to be into this sort of singer-songwriter kind of music. On top of that, it's damn soulful, and her voice is absolutely stellar -deep, sultry, and versatile. The ballads drag for me - and actually, I kind of don't care for them at all. But everything else is so good, I kind of don't care?? Fave tracks: - Down To Zero - Help Yourself - Water With The Wine - Join The Boys - People - Somebody Who Loves You - Like Fire - Tall In The Saddle
I like her voice and the music long time ago*
beautiful voice, love the music. Would listen again.
"Down to Zero" is such a vibe, perfectly cozy match to a rainy chilly day. "Love and Affection" and "Somebody Who Loves You" are great. Instant favorite, will be spinning this album again.
This kind of slaps? It's missing a good hook or chorus to really sell the whole thing. Tracy Chapman knows what I mean. That said, there isn't a bad track on this album. And the Steely Dan similarities can't be wrong. Steely Madam? Steely Damsel?
Loved it!
Absolutely fantastic, exactly the type of music I imagine when thinking of Rock n Roll! The album got even better with each song, which is kind of a rarity IMO
100% for me
cool
My dad loves Joan and even met her, once apparently really nice! Love and affection, join the boys and tall in the saddle are all certified bangers 5/5 why not
So full of woe and emotion. Not my normal listening choice but my god this is beautiful. 5/5 no notes.
Me encantó
Great music. First time, knowingly listened to her.
Folk goddess at her peak.
Seriously creative - none of these songs follow the typical verse-chorus-verse pattern, and they all have melodies that swirl with different instrumentation and real musicality amid the compelling stories they tell. Still astonishing.
Now this why I started this list. Some i never was exposed to before and is worth listening. Great music great songs great vocals.
Thank God, what a relief! A woman, a woman who can sing, a woman with a voice! After albums of wannabees and pretenders, wanky boys getting off on themselves, an actual musician. Women definitely don’t appear often enough on this list, except as wet-dream bondage fantasies of teenage boys, but that’s show business.
Make sure you are sitting down before you listen to this albums. Because it will knock your on your ass if you're standing. I never even heard of her before today and Ill never forget her after today.
What a great voice! Joan brings the funk when we need it but also can hold back and sing with soul and emotion. Great listen that I will come back to
I really liked this album. I think her voice is gorgeous and the songs manage to show it off in different ways. Will definitely listen again. I think at the moment my favourites are just the ones I was already familiar with, so will be nice to become more familiar with the rest. Fav song: Down To Zero Least fav: Somebody Who Loves You
Really unique voice.
Great find!
A cross between Elton John, Funkadelic, and Nick Drake. Greatness in it's simplicity. Executed very well. Singer songwriter.
Loved this one. Never heard of Joan Armatrading before but what a lovely album! Funky, smooth, full of emotion but never overbearing. This and a cup of coffee is an amazing way to start a fall morning.
Real good dude
Great voice. Great songwriting. Great variety of styles, instruments, and vibe. I'd heard of her throughout my life, even heard a song or two, but not in 20 years. I've known folks that say they've always loved her and wish she'd been "bigger" I just didn't know how great she was. I think she deserves all the praise and accolades that Joni Mitchell got because she's superior in many ways. "Love And Affection" was apparently a hit, but I don't recall it upon listening. But it did remind me of Richard Ashcroft's "Lover" which turns out he nicked a bit for. It's one my my least favorite Ashcroft songs because it's thin and poppy. I think her version is far superior. Love the jazzy breakdown bit in "Join The Boys" This is a really great album from a very emotional, versatile singer. Gotta give this the very rare first-listen 5 star!
What a voice!! I have never heard about Joan before and this was a great surprise! What brilliant album!
Oh wow what a wonderful surprise. Funk, R&B, pop, hints of rock… every song is a mini masterpiece. Maybe the airport gin will wear off… but maybe it won’t.
Long time favorite, it's still fantastic
Este disco es pura belleza. Melódicamente soberbio, perfectamente instrumentado, voz pura, sencilla, envolvente, tersa. Elegancia en la composiciones y en la producción. ¿Qué más puedo decir? No lo había escuchado y solo conocía a Joab de oídas. “Down To Zero”, “People”, “Somebody Who Loves Me” y mi favorita, “Love And Affection” van a ser escuchadas más veces en los próximos días.
9.3/10
Love it.
Masterpiece. Bluesy, jazzy, funky, folky, and rocking a voice like a peated single malt. I remember when I started learning guitar that dad gave me this album as his favourite work. I appreciated it then and so much more now, and today I read about the wonderful artist's background. This is life and it's a joyful experience.
Awesome
What the heck. I'm two albums away from finishing this list and this album was better than most of the crap I had to slog through.
an absolute wonder
Maybe my favorite album so far. I had never heard of her before and this has already made the endeavor worthwhile.
Really liked this one, neat find
Love to see a familiar friend, and she is a timeless classic
a wonderfully funky and energetic album that covers several genres thanks to unique, innovative instrumentation. a stunning vocal performance from joan sees her explore a wide range which is made even better by the fact that the album is lyrically strong too. beautiful guitar and sax solos add so much depth to a lot of the tracks. this album is the perfect length and has your attention from start to finish.
Y'know, 60's/70's singer-songwriter folkies have never really been my bag. If you've been a part of my group you've probably read me say this a million times before, but it bears repeating. I just don't have an easy time with them whatsoever. Oftentimes, they come across as poets who wanna pretend to be musicians, and that's just not something I can vibe with. Being AuDHD, I struggle with lyrics, so just the mere idea of listening to a whole album where I have try n' dissect flowery poetics, where it's the only thing you really **can** do because the music behind it is often so nonexistent ... it's like, I sometimes wonder if I was too harsh on 'Court And Spark', like maybe I just didn't give it the fair attention it deserved. But it was never gonna be easy for it to win any favors with me, let alone make me actually **like it**. It's a losing battle for most of these 60's/70's folk dealies. Which makes it all the more a plus that this album doesn't sound like it came from the 60's or 70's. Seriously — this album came out in 1976, but if you'd just given me a cut from this thing without any extra context, I never would have been able to tell. To begin with, the lyrics are **not** flowery or poetic. They're not dead simple, but, more importantly, they're not as obtuse as I've come to expect from these sorts of albums. These lyrics are more like ... and, yes, this is the comparison everyone's made: they're like Tracy Chapman. There's a clearness and a directness to them that I really appreciate. Like, it's just nice to be able to hear lyrics and understand what they're saying. I don't hafta bend over backwards and get a literary degree to even begin to get them, no: they're right there. I seriously can't tell you how much I enjoyed this album simply for the fact that I wasn't gonna hafta struggle with the words. But there's more to this album than just the lyrics. There's the music as well, and this is another area where this album feels like it fell through a time warp. Most folkie singer-songwriter albums from around this time (so I've come to picture them) seem to not really care about the music? It's never emphasized and more often than not feels like it's there as a necessity so it's not just poetry and nothing else. Often, they'll learn to play guitar and that's it. Sometimes there's a harmonica for some brief interludes ... ooo, and maybe if they're feeling extra fancy, they'll add in **other instruments**! Just as long as they aren't doing anything interesting. That's distract from the **poetry**, y'know. With Joan's album, though, honestly, if you wanted to listen to this thing on a purely sonic level, you absolutely could. Joan's got herself a great voice, for one. It's a little different than you'd expect, but she uses it wonderfully. I think the worst I can say about it is there's a spot of tremolo or two that sounds like when I speed up Buffy Saint-Marie's cover of "The Circle Game" (you ever try that? The tremolo on the held notes is a riot; it sounds like she's singing on an active washing machine). But besides that, the instrumentation is so far beyond this decade. There's just something incredibly 90's about it; I can't exactly place my finger on it. It just evokes that kind of atmosphere. I mean, goodness, this thing has some country **grooves** sometimes. The end of "Tall In The Saddle" goes off, honestly. And the strings on this album — oh, goodness me, the **strings**. Lovely strings; big fan of them. By themselves they would've been enough to win me over on this album, and good for the rest of the album that everything else keeps up to that snuff. Color me impressed. I really didn't expect to like this album as much as I did. It honestly makes me wonder why people don't talk about this thing more? It feels like it should be named as an inspiration more often, right alongside Joni Mitchell and whoever else. It's crazy how ahead of its time it is — and I guess that's ultimately the secret to get me to like 60's/70's folk albums. Just sound like you came from the 90's! Get some good instrumentation and melodies, don't be so purple prose about your lyrics ... and boom! An instant classic! I mean, is it **that hard** to sound 20 or 30 years ahead of your time? I don't think so. If Joan could do it, why can't you?
I’m at a 5. Well, that didn’t sound like 1976 at all to me. That sounded like at least 1986, if not a little further. Immediately, as with a lot of other people, the mind goes to Tracy Chapman, but these aren’t really Tracy Chapman tracks. Yes, vocally, they’re pretty similar, but Joan Armatrading blends the sort of spoken, conscious style of Tracy Chapman’s scattered & scatty vocals with the flair and twang of an Elton John. Lyrically, these are “conscious” tracks, sure, but conscious in the frame of love as opposed to societal stuff. I don’t think there are many tracks here that portray that kind of idealized love that other singers might croon about (“Love and Affection” & “Like Fire” come to mind), but instead, a lot of mildly flawed (yet fair / fun) scenarios for it. I mean, hell, the album starts on “Down to Zero”, which is basically about a guy who’s utterly humbled after getting broken up with, and having to crawl back to the person that he already had it best with beforehand. “Water with the Wine” is just a good night after a very drunken bar trip, with a lesson to not go too crazy out there. “Save Me” is an interesting twist on the first track, with someone basically drowning in her own sorrow & needing someone to save her… but he just won’t do it. “Somebody Who Loves You” is basically begging someone to admit to cheating so she can come up with an excuse to forgive him & take the heat, but he just won’t do it. I’m harping on the lyrics a bit because I think they add to the album, but the big secret is that they are ENTIRELY unnecessary. Joan Armatrading’s vocal style is lovely, and her passion comes through on a lot of these tracks. The other star of the show is the instrumentation, and it’s where this album shined brightest for me. Everything from the guitar, percussion, keyboard, piano, the steel guitar, the sax, and so on just fits perfectly. Beyond that, the way this album is mixed & composed evokes a sense of being far beyond its years. I can’t recall a track where I could specifically say “yeah, this one sounds like 1976 to me.” Honestly, I think Hootie & The Blowfish is my closest comparison in terms of an overall groove, but as a whole, it just feels like a ‘90s album that came to fruition very early. It’s hard to describe without listening to the album, and if you’re somehow reading this without having listened to it, just go fucking do it. I really think the music speaks for itself far more than I can here; it’s a 41 minute delight. A few tracks go a little long & spin the wheels in a way that feels like padding, but the grooves & her voice are both so infectious that you’ll never care about it in the moment. I’m very glad this is on the list – when I saw she was a singer-songwriter with a folk & pop lean, I simply hoped it would be interesting enough to warrant being on the list, and it was in spades. This is an excellent find, and a very strong 5 to my ears. P.S.: The final 2 minutes of “Tall in the Saddle” are fucking awesome.
This is a name I have always heard and never gave it a good listen - she’s incredible
Joan Armatrading: This one had some surprises and some original sounds. I could hear she must have been a big influence on Dave Matthews. Favs were “People” and “ Like Fire” and “Love and Affection”
Oddly enough, at the start of this year, I heard the big single off Joan Armatrading's self-titled album, "Love and Affection", and remember enjoying it. Joan is an English singer-songwriter who had a rather earnest upbringing and worked her way towards a record deal while writing and performing her original songs. This third album of hers would be her commercial breakthrough, and I can hear why. This record is a rich blend of folk and pop, with bright textures and bouncing grooves to make these songs feel vibrant under Joan's soft yet commanding contralto delivery. Not only does her strumming of the acoustic guitar come off well-accented, but the rest of the soundscape is bolstered by the welcomed additional instrumentation, such as the accompanying strings and alto saxophone solo on "Love and Affection", or the mandolin motifs on "Somebody Who Loves You". Adding to this flair are some deep observational lyrics of love in all its twists and turns. I know that love and relationship songs will be forever abundant in music. Yet, there is something to be said about Joan's particular poetry in plain, spoken language, directed towards "you" as the partner involved in the relationship, that feels more resonant. Nothing is left to ambiguity or second-guessing, as she laid it all out on the table, including the accusations of one-night stands on "Join the Boys" or the affair exposed in "Somebody Who Loves You". It may seem simple in its presentation and execution, but Joan Armatrading's self-titled album is just that good. I couldn't find anything to complain about with this record, and I am glad to have gotten to check her music out this year.
I mean just a solid vibe.
Fantastic album. Love that this sounds alt folk in the 70s. Easily could have dropped in 2005 and wouldn't know the difference.
Absolutely love this one. Excellent sound quality and great songs. A classic!
Stupenda sorpresa. Una voce della madonna, con musica che spazia tra jazz, blues e addirittura in qualche momento prog
Sick as fuuuuck
Bangers all the way through. Really fun and hypnotic vocal melodies, funky syncopated percussion. Elements of pop, country, soul. Can’t stop listening
What a fantastic album. This is the absolute real deal and approximately 100 times better than any modern imitators.
This is exactly what I was hoping for when I started this project of 1001. Never heard of her before this, and I will want to know more now. Every track seemed to have a small surprise to just keep you interested. Loved it.
This was SO GOOD
Solid Gold. Wonderful lyrics, fantastic music and arrangements. Her voice is so beautifully natural, top notes are delicate and soft, mid range is deep and mesmerising, and low range is raw and nasty. She has a big mix of bluesy, soulful, jazzy, and country folk all mixed up. Amazing album by the UK's best female singer songwriter ever.
Listening to this right after 16 Lovers Lane was a night and day contrast for me. I knew the name but I'd never much listened to anything of hers. I will fix that. This is music that sounds like it might get put on to relax or to have something playing in the background, but within a song or two, it takes over everything else.
She’s like a groovy Joni Mitchell.
Like Meat Loaf but even sexier
Fantastic
This is a great album, glad I finally listened to it! I knew Love and Affection already, just had no idea how talented she is. Great songwriting, production, and singing. Not really a bad song on here, and sounds quite ahead of it's time as well.
Great album
shockingly outstanding. one of the coolest and most unique records i’ve EVER heard
Очень атмосферно и приятно слушать
This one blew me away, I think it's the first unknown to me since Laura Nyro that I love and it's going to be on top of my experiences from this list. My highlights: Down to Zero, Water With the Wine, Like Fire and the closer Tall in the Saddle
Very enjoyable.
loved it. joni mitchell vibes. lovely acoustic guitar. surprising funk.
Really, really good! I went in expecting a subdued singer songwriter with no other musicians, which can be a slog unless you're Nick Drake... nope, this was a really enjoyable, fun album that I'll come back to! :)
One of my all time favourite albums.
крута
best album so far
“Love and Affection” was one of the first songs that my brother and I bonded over after a couple of serious sibling rivalry teenage years. Now he’s one of my favorite people ever. So is Joan Armatrading. Five stars just for this memory.
Erste Überraschung, das war wirklich gut
This one surprised me. I really like it. Especially the jazzy parts. Also, the song People has a nice funk to it, while Like Fire gets a bit country. It's an interesting blend of styles, but still cohesive. You really don't know what to expect next, and I love that. Ending with Tall in the Saddle was fun fun fun! Fav tracks: Down to Zero, Love and Affection, Join the Boys, Tall in the Saddle Least fav track: Save Me
I had never heard of her before. She’s awesome!
Beautiful.
Que surpresa! Esse álbum é incrível. Não conhecia a artista e estou encantado. CVJ Vivian.
Amazing album
The break in Tall in the Saddle is a masterclass
Wonderful, timeless songs.
Perfect.
Just wonderful to hear this again
Great
Consistently interesting and fresh. Nothing stood out as a hit necessarily, but it felt like serious thought was put into each song. Large variety throughout as well.
This is a great no skip album. Really enjoyed it.
What a lovely album.
Even better than I remembered.
Ahhhh Joan. Such a great talent.
I've heard of Joan Armatrading many times over the years, but have never listened to her prior to this. Absolutely wonderful album. I'm a bit shocked I'd never heard it even in my record store days. Favorites: "Love and Affection", "Join the Boys", "Like Fire", but then they're all great.
Love And Affection had been in my recent rotation of songs, but it's the only song of hers that I'd heard prior. And I think I only discovered it because the algorithm played it and I instantly fell in love (and affection) with it. I have to ask. Why. How. Why have I never heard of her until recently. How has this album been here all this time and I didn't know!? This is among the best folk / singer songwriter albums I've ever heard, and it's so cool that she's the sole songwriter listed for the entire album. The guitars are fantastic throughout with flavors of rock, blues, folk, and country, and her voice is emotive, smooth, sparkly, raw, and moving, depending on what the song asks for. This is absolutely going to be one I play again and again.
I've never listened to Joan Armatrading before...what a great record! Warm production, incredible lyrics, interesting chord changes abound, all held together by a one-of-a kind artist. If only more folk-based records found a way feel as contemporary, yet timeless.
Wow, How have I not heard of her before? I liked this album. It is up my streett though but I can see how people that don't like folk rock-soul-blues might not like the album. The band, her voice - everything is good.
Just to echo a lot of the reviews I saw on this album: Damn son! Who is Joan Armatrading and why have I NEVER heard of her? This album is fantastic. I saw a lot of comparisons to Tracy Chapman. This is LIGHTYEARS better than Tracy Chapman in my opinion. That voice, combined with the folk, funk and soul all blended into an extremely enjoyable listen from start to finish. I'll definitely be coming back to this one (and maybe diving into her other albums).
Exceptional album for such a quiet and reflective person. One of the all time greats. Class trumps all else.
Such an interesting album, new to me. I love Armatrading’s voice and her guitar. Somebody Who Loves You is so touching. Really glad to hear this.
This was a really enjoyable album. Has some hints of Tracy Chapman in it.
This is a really stellar record. I’m honestly shocked that I’ve never heard of Joan Armatrading before, and I’m a little more shocked to find out that she’s British. This album really sweeps a broad spectrum of genres, it touches on funk, pop, rock n roll, new wave, even occasionally folk. Normally when an album attempts to hit so many different styles it falls flat for me, but I think it was done incredibly well here. Not one genre felt out of place with Joan’s voice. The production value is excellent for the time, and it feels very well performed. I really struggle to find any faults here, I really enjoyed listening to this record. The saxophone solo on “Love and Affection” really pushed this song over the 4* edge and right up to a perfect score. 5*
This album was very dope. I will probably return to it on the whole. Favorited several tracks from it. Really the opener is the only one I don't like that much. Really fantastic recording quality as well for the 70's.
I have never heard of Joan Armatrading, so I didn’t know what to expect when going into this album. Personally, I really liked this album. The songs are catchy and relaxing, and I liked them all equally. I especially love the drums and guitar used. I could totally see myself listening to this album more often.
Funky as hell. Get this vinyl
This is pretty righteous.
Beautiful, deep, rich voice, with simple but powerful guitar and lyrics - I loved this album!
Joan Armatrading is a performer I haven't paid much attention to, and I was really impressed by this album. Great songwriting, funky grooves, and impeccable guitar chops.
I really liked this! So fun, retro sounding
This far exceeded my expectations -- weekend bias alert Glynn Johns said it was the best album he was ever associated with. Wowowwow. The entire album flows and hardly brings on any fatigue. I listened to it twice in a row without it feeling like a drag. Water with the Wine was a really hard hitting track. Not at all pleasant, but the music got the helpless emotion across while preaching that crazy story/message for women in the 70s Like Fire -- favorite track on the album. Slide guitar was fire.
Another XPN staple I’ve heard a bunch of times but never really *listened* to before. Goddamn she’s good.
Oh man, a beauty, after a week of grafting through some dire albums, this was an absolute gem on a Friday. My heart melts at her voice and the stories she can craft for us. I'd heard about her before and a couple of tracks, but that was just... Mighty
How have I missed her??? She is amazing.
Ok, another one I've never heard of. And what kind of name is this? From 1976... great, some kind of hippie nonsense. Well, let's get it over with... HANG ON--- This lady is fantastic! How is she not more popular? Or is she and I just didn't know it? Regardless, this is one of the best albums I've come across on this projects. A quick count shows that I've rated 26 albums a 5 (including this one) out of 385 played. I'm digging up some of her other work for my playlist.
Never heard this artist before. Her voice is very easy to listen to. Really enjoyed this. So much so I looked further into her catalogue. If this is your vibe checkout the Whatevers For Us LP.
That was great - such balance with some folky almost country sound with some funk influence and just overall so personal and unique. Very enjoyable
Oh man, this music is tight up my alley. How am I just now discovering her?!? Loved it.
Smooooth…like honey
Loved this one! I hadn't heard of this artist before, and was instantly hooked with the first song.
Amazing guitar and lyrics,
This was beautiful and funky!
This was really great. Love & Affection was a definite highlight. It also sounds like Dave Matthews is very influenced by Joan Armatrading... but how would I know that (hahahah).
Honestly so peaceful, feels like Sade and Eric Clapton had a baby it would be Joan Armatrading - love it.
Strong Tracey Chapman vibes, and I mean that as the highest compliment possible.
Incredible voice, loved this!
She's just incredible.
lovely voice, it felt old without feeling antiquated
Awesome. Haven’t heard this in a zillion years, but it’s so refreshing.
Down to zero help myself tall in saddle
Really enjoyed this one. Nice folk vibes
Really like this
wow, this was an amazing album. 5 stars all the way
First time encountering her. What a great voice! Love hearing an alto instead of the usual sopranos. The album starts very strong, like solid 4 stars territory. And then track 4 hits (Love and Affection) and from that point on, everything is 4.5-5 stars. Overall, this album is so damn good that it's an enthusiastic 5 stars. There are some sick, filthy grooves on this album. A lot of the acoustic guitar work is out of this world great. I'm going to come back to this album frequently.
Glad I got to discover her.
I've always liked Joan Armatrading but I pretty much have only heard what has been played on the radio and the one album I do have (Track Record). Two of those songs come from this album, which I didn't know. Both Down to Zero and Love and Affection are great and everything else is really good or better. She's a great singer-songwriter, but the backing band on this are terrific. This is a close call -- would have gone 4.5 but I'm rounding her up!
Such a beautifully cool record
5⭐️/5 [11.29.2025] 01.08.2026
Poetic love songs 🤩
fabulous blues singer/songwriter, great songs - later albums are also 5* she is great live, an ace electric guitar player !
🎧Fantastic, and one I’d never heard before. In fact Joan Armatrading’s name was completely unfamiliar to me. What a voice. Did not care for Join The Boys but otherwise this is great. Favorite track: Down To Zero
This was a pleasant surprise. Never heard of Joan Armatrading but I think she's great. A+ vocal work. Thoroughly enjoyed.
Smooth, jazzy but also funky. Great arrangements and a great, powerful voice.
Sublime songwriter, incredible voice and range. Ahead of her time too - this music still resonates. Happy to play this over and over.
Wow. Although I'd certainly heard of Joan Armatrading, I somehow had never heard her music before today. Too bad for me, for this was killer. Great songwriting and musicianship, a nice variety of styles, some gorgeous harmonies, and influential to boot. I may be overrating it with a 5—it's possible it'll settle down in 4-star territory with more listens—but when an album sweeps you away, you gotta go with your gut.
Wow! What a start to the US Bicentennial Year. This album is like looking at the ground and finding a diamond. Down to Zero is my fav
5/5. This is truly the perfect mix of singer songwriter pop and soul. The instrumentation is truly wonderful. Big and loud while still being quiet and in the background. The production elevates this to another level. And I haven't gotten to the lyrics and her vocal expertise. It feels so natural and beautiful. Like Joni Mitchell with Aretha Franklin. I never was bored throughout the whole album and each song hits just right. Sometimes it's somber, other times it's so funky and awesome. Crazy I never heard this one but so glad this one showed up, a classic for me for sure. Best Song: Love And Affection, Join The Boys, Down To Zero
bdb album. 1976 british folk rock/pop
Entre las mejores!!!!
somehow lowkey one of the best produced albums ive ever heard...the amount of precision on display without sacrificing an ounce of warmth is astonishing! obviously a lot of it is going to come down to joan herself, who is magnetic and powerful without ever once overplaying anything. i dont mind things that are cold or overplayed, but the discipline here in all directions is impressive, and creates something shockingly enveloping in ways that i dont even think i can articulate after just one listen. the start of every new track pulled me in all over again...great melodic ideas and expressive song structures, arranged tastefully and performed magically. what i caught of the lyrics (not typically my focus on a first listen) are also incredible. i cant believe ive never heard about her before even a little, this deserves way more canonization!
This was way better than I initially expected. At the beginning, it sounded kinda like a Nick-Drake-meets-Chrissy-Hynde sound, great guitar-playing, wonderful melodic lines and chord progressions. But then the funky guitar licks came in and I found myself humming along and really enjoying it. I listened to the album twice. Five stars.
Two perfect albums in a row! First Richard and Linda Thompson, now this one. Maybe it's just the duds on this list giving me a healthy perspective on quality music, but wow. Just wow. Can't believe I've never even heard of her. Every track was a standout, but certainly the big single "Love and Affection" deserves every bit of praise it's gotten. Armatrading has one of those classic voices that brings every song to life. There's the old saying about "She could sing the phone book", and that's certainly true here. Put her up there with the greats.
Wow what a surprise. I only knew of Joan from her 80's hit Drop The Pilot so I wasn't really ready for this. There's lots of different styles that come into play and blend seamlessly - folk, country, funk, rock etc. Her voice is amazing and carries emotion. What a treat this album is.
This is a very good album. Has a Tracy Chapman vibe
Joan Armatrading would have absolutely killed the festival circuit. I want to hear her play with every great guitarist who’s ever lived. Great discovery, unbelievable album.
Never heard of her, not even a little bit. With such a unique name I think I would’ve remembered her, especially with this sound. This was incredible. From a quiet, soulful folk sound to a more hard, bluesy sound, it’s all here. Her voice is perfect for the music she produces, and she’s got a hell of a band behind her (future Keith Moon replacement Kenney Jones on drums!). This all makes me wonder where she was before this, and where she went after. I know enough about music of the decade that I feel like I would’ve heard of her. But she was really a bolt from the blue here and that enchanted the entire experience for me. I’m much more excited when I discover a “new” artist like this through this project. I enjoy hearing classics from heavy hitters, and hearing albums I know by heart already. But this album is an example of why I’m doing this in the first place. Five stars. (This was probably a four and a half star album but “Tall in the Saddle” pushed it over the edge for me.) Standout Tracks: Down to Zero, Love and Affection, Join the Boys, People, Like Fire, Tall in the Saddle
Excellent singer/songwriter
this is lovely
I knew a lot of these songs from a best of album but really enjoyed the ones I'd never heard. Armatrading deserves to be much more widely known, which is explored in the recent documentary 'Joan Armatrading: Me Myself I' (worth watching if you can get it). The song 'People' was a surprising, Zappa-esque highlight!
Wowwowow. Just when i was losing hope.
This album was amazing. I had never heard of her before. The songs were cool, her voice was awesome and the mixing and producing really shined through. This was such a good listen.
Who came first? Tracy Chapman or Joan Armatrading? Don’t care. Love them both. Loved this album!
Great mix of a classic rock album with a lot of funk and great guitar work.
BEST SONGS: - Help Yourself - Love and Affection
Brummie legend. Really enjoyed this album. I've only really seen her live performances on things like The Old Grey Whistle Test, so was pleasantly surprised to hear how diverse this album was. Not just folk guitar and piano, but also funk, soul, and blues. Great stuff.
Such a wonderfully nostalgic soft spot for Joan Armatrading -- more music from my childhood.
Didn't finish fully but great motown album
Wow I never would have listened to this and am so glad I did. Beautiful sounding album and I love her voice.
One of my favorites that has popped up yet. This was excellent, soulful, folksy and fun.
Yessss. Big JArma fan. Folky and soulful. Simple and powerful. Just makes me feel good. Very positive force.
I've never heard any of these before and I loved this music. Her voice is amazing.
Had no idea this was going to be so good. A little folk, a little blues, a dash of jazz and just some fantastic songwriting. Don't know how this one got by me for so long. I was tangentially aware of her name -- she got lumped in my mind with Joni Mitchell and Joan Baez and the like. But she's unique. Lovely.
Excellent. Never heard this album before, but its great! 5/5
Lively and well put together. Great guitar. Album is nearly 50 years old but sounds fresh to my ears! 4.5
I've had this on rotation for days and it's an absolute beauty. Sometimes it feels like a folk-rock album with some brilliant electric guitar and bass, but it's also so much more. The soul in her voice and gentle forays into jazz and blues make for an incredibly rounded and varied, yet consistent album. I didn't know this one before but I am so glad to have discovered it. The songwriting is first rate and she executes time and time again.
LOVED this album. Felt like another Rumours or something. A couple of awkward transitions between great songs though.
Really good album
So you’re telling me that this beautiful piece of art has been out here for damn near 50 years and I’m JUST now hearing it?? Gen X you’ve failed us once again. Lol but seriously this album is incredible!
I have never heard of or listened to Joan’s music and I think this was the best discovery yet since joining the album generator. I downloaded the album and excited to listen again!
Man, this is gold. I've heard of Joan Armatrading of course but can't say I've really listened. She's got vocal chops and songwriting talent that survives decades and crosses genres.
Glyn Johns produced! Joan GAY?! Favorite tracks: Help Yourself, Love and Affection
Loved it
I was a little underwhelmed at the start of this one but it kept getting better and never went backwards which was really cool, I'm a big fan of back loaded albums on a first listen. This was a mix of some really great elements of different songwriting, and while it may not be a style that moves me a particularly large amount, it's just such a unique blend of different ideas that it's just a joy to listen to and I didn't want it to stop
I have loved Joni Mitchell's music for years and this reminds me of it. Excellent songwriting and musicianship.
I had never heard of this person before. But I absolutely loved this album. I’m sorry I was on vacation and didn’t have time to listen more than once, but when I can I’m going to listen to this multiple times.
Amazing album and perfect to try and delay some recital nerves with a good boogie. Parents enjoyed too :)) discovered some lovely songs I didn't know before although I obviously know the big love and affection
A name I recognized but never really knew who she was. What a great album. I want to go back and re-explore this one a few more times.
Wow.. This is absolutely fantastic. The blending of American soul with British folk with a heavy dose of emotion. Also Glyn Johns production is just amazing on this, sounds great loud.
Funky female 70s jams - AWESOME
Where has Joan Armatrading been all my life? Relevance to this list: 5 Personal enjoyment: 5
Today's album is fantastic folk rock/blues rock/singer-songwriter. Reminds me of upbeat Joni Mitchell or Carole King/Tracy Chapman. I love finding someone completely new who you wouldn't necessarily have ever stumbled upon Normally. I enjoyed this album so much that I listened to more of her stuff afterwards Favourite songs: Join the Boys, People, Water With the Wine, Down to Zero, Like Fire, Love and Affection Least favourite songs: Save Me 5/5
This list needs more of stuff like this.
One of the biggest discoveries from this 1001 album project. Joan's harmonies are warm and colorful. The guitar work is fantastic and versatile, making each song unskippable. The production and instrumentation are flawless. Your jaw drops when you realize this album was released in 1976. Can you imagine how it would be to listen to this jewel back in the 70s? I mean, it's Nick Drake's level thing.
This is a really good album. I’ve never really listened to her before. The vocals, the incrementation everything was just really top-notch. I really enjoyed this album.
Loved this! What a voice! Beautiful writing. I’m never sure why JA wasn’t a bigger star than she is?
I've only been familiar with a few things by Joan Armatrading, but this album makes me want to actively seek out more of her work. The mid 1970s were the heyday of singer-songwriters, but her work, notably on this album, stands out for its varied tempos and themes. I hear some Springsteen storytelling and some British singer-songwriter, a la Richard Thompson, on this, but moreso uniquely Joan Armatrading. Definitely worth a close listen.
loved it so much, never heard of her.
Genuinely incredible
Fab
I did enjoy this, though Joan would go on to more commercially viable stuff later but also be a bit more adventurous. Terrific musicians with Hellecaster Jerry Donohue and ex faces and Who drummer Kenney Jones among others appearing. It does show the breadth of UK music in 1976 - Bowie, Queen, Bowie and Quatro don’t really fit here. Neither do the soon to be recorded pistols, clash or pretenders. She’s two to three years ahead of Costello (but then who isn’t?) and even Sting and the police are a bit behind. I’d probably compare her most closely to Kate Bush given both have unique voices and are women following their own vision, not the vision of male producers. I was going to give it three but it’s growing on me. 4.5.
I opened Scratches Record Shop on April 3rd 1982. Three days beforehand, even though we were flat out getting ready for opening day, we went to see Joan Armatrading on her first Australian tour at the Capitol Theatre. I remember a bunch of us hung around the stage door, hoping to see her, which we did, & a gay friend of mine was so thrilled that he got to touch her shoulder as she walked past. And I can put most of this down to this album, which was one of the highlights of 1976/77. For me it was driven by 2JJ pushing the album - I think the title track was the first song from it that I heard - one of the great album openers. Then Love & Affection was released as a single & she was on her way. It’s easily the most played song she’s performed live over the years. All 5 tracks on Side 1 are winners. The flip is not quite as stunning, but it does end with another of her great ones - Tall In The Saddle. Two of the best moments on this record occur in the opening track, when B.J. Cole’s steel guitar comes in & Jerry Donahue’s exquisite guitar solo on the closing track. A great record.
Great discovery, great voice rhythm and music. Love it!
4.9 - I’ve always had down to zero on my playlist, but never listened to more. So grateful this was on the list. So much emotion and just a stunning album
Liked this a lot, the whole album was beautiful. 4.7/5
Really liked this
Love Joan Armatrading, such beautiful songwriting and effortless way she plays her music. Love and Affection is an excellent song.
aaagghhhh i love it so much. im such a sucker for some orchestral 70s singer-songwriter stuff. the arrangements on this album are so beautiful, the songs are moving, and love and affection is one of my favorites ever i think. joan's voice is so rich and her range is insane, as is her guitar playing. 8.5/10, fav tracks: love and affection, down to zero, someone who loves you
Pretty rad.
First time hearing this album really enjoyed
I'll confess that my only knowledge of Joan Armatrading's music before this was "Drop the Pilot" and only because of a Mandy Moore cover. I'd definitely put her up there with the other classic singer songwriters of the time—Carole King, Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, etc. Her storytelling is top notch. The musicianship is top notch as well, with some great guitar solos (like on the closing track). The sound oscillates between folky, almost country acoustic songs, funky blues numbers (with a bit of jazz), and harder bluesy rock. Fans of Joni Mitchell and Led Zeppelin (the album was produced by Glyn Johns) could both find songs to vibe to on this album. There aren't many missteps here, though the random bass vocal guy on "Love and Affection" kind of ruins an otherwise good song. It comes out of nowhere and sounds so out of place. Best tracks: "Down to Zero" "Save Me" "People" "Like Fire" 5/5
Incredible album. Every song is a banger. Her voice fits perfectly with the bluesy, funky guitar riffs. Can hear some inspiration from Floyd in Tall in the Saddle. Love how the album mixes slow acoustic songs with drippy electric guitar. This album flows seamlessly into itself.
Damn, how have I never heard of Joan Armatrading before? This is excellent! One of my favorite albums of all time is Linda Perry (of 4 Non Blondes fame)'s solo effort "In Flight" and this album could very well be the blueprint that Perry followed. I set it playing again as soon as the second play through had finished. Fave tracks - more listens definitely required, but for now "Love and Affection", "Save Me" and "Tall in the Saddle"
Lovely album
I’m aware of Joan Armstrong but never actually listened to her music intentionally. Ie only just realised it was her song sang love and affection today. Great album, hard to believe this came out in the 70’s sounds like it could be a modern singer song writer album. The music is rich and varied, featuring Armatrading’s guitar playing and vocals, as well as contributions from other musicians such as Dave Mattacks, Dave Pegg, and B. J. Cole. The album incorporates elements of folk, rock, blues, and soul, creating a unique and original sound that is both timeless and modern. The album also demonstrates Armatrading’s ability to experiment and innovate, as she uses different instruments and arrangements, such as the saxophone on “Like Fire” and the strings on “Love and Affection”. In conclusion, Joan Armatrading is a classic and masterpiece album that deserves to be in every music lover’s collection. It is a testament to Armatrading’s skill and creativity as a singer-songwriter and guitarist, and a reflection of her personality and spirit as a woman and an artist. Immediately added to my permanent rotation. 5 stars.
Listen at 9/02/2024
Amazed I'd never heard her music. This was really enjoyable and refreshing. Second listen was even more enjoyable. Loved the mellow vibe.
LOVE
Yep. This album hits.
I am very much a fan of the Joan Armatrading Greatest Hits album that I have, but this album introduced me to a number of new tunes. A big fan of everything that I heard on this album too! So glad to see her on this list!!!
Incredible. A rich and timeless sound. Want to listen on vinyl in front of a crackling fire. Amazing.
Wow I feel like I’ve had a lot of great albums to listen to lately and was sure that streak was due to end. NOT TODAY, SATAN. This is an exquisite album. The arrangements are spot on, backing vocals come in just when needed in the most perfect ways, and the songcraft exceptional. A moving, lovely experience that feels so personal how can I be anything but a huge fan?
YES. Unexpected gem right here. I love you, Joan.
Inventive, beautiful, and poetic. There's so much energy and soul in these tracks, it's incredible front to back.
Soulful, powerful, magnificent. This understated album blew me away.
Never listened to Joan before. Really enjoyed - folk, roots, a bit of rock. Definitely see how she's influenced many current musicians!
Joan Armatrading, a trailblazing artist, who broke barriers as the first UK based black woman to leave an indelible mark on the music scenes of both the UK and the US with her original compositions. Her influence resonates in the works of Beth Orton, Suzanne Vega, Ani DiFranco, and Tracy Chapman, forging the way forward for female singer songwriters. With a voice that effortlessly blends smoky bluesy tones, Armatrading has become a legend in her own right. Glyn Johns, renowned for producing iconic acts like the Rolling Stones and the Beatles, lauds her work, declaring Joan Armatrading as the best album he ever participated in. This accolade from a music production legend is a testament to the exceptional quality of Armatrading's artistry. NUMBER OF BANGERS - 5 STAND OUT TRACK - Like Fire
If you like Fleetwood Mac, I dare you not to like this album It’s elegant, it’s sweet, and it shreds. HL: “Down to Zero”, “Help Yourself”, “Love and Affection”, “Like Fire”, “Somebody Who Loves You” January 12, 2024
Love Joan Armatrading. A perfect folk album.
Really enjoyable album. Joan's music is like a stepping stone between the doo-wop and blues of the 50s and 60s and the folksiness of Tracey Chapman. Emotional, pure, melodic. Very much appreciated.
one more time with feeling!
Amazing, one of my faves
What a find! Wow!!
Very cool artist I’d never heard of.
Album 9/1001: Picture perfect example of a solid and congruent piece of music. Each song plays well into the other, the voice of the singer and music composition solid. Feeling of finishing a long seasonal job 10/10
I'm really glad I discovered this. I'm pretty sure I recognize Down to Zero and maybe Love and Affection but didn't know who they were. I'm gonna give it a five just because (in addition to being good) it's the first album I was unfamiliar with at all and am glad I found. I actually listened to it twice then the album To the Limit
BL: this one is a complete blind listen, never heard of Joan Armatrading and can’t really gage anything about this apart from it’ll involve guitar. AL: this absolutely blew me away. The lyricism, the guitar. The blends of genre. Wow. Absolutely stellar, and some tracks will definitely be making their way into my rotation. FT: “down to zero”, “love and affection”, “join the boys”, “people”, 5/5
Loved this from start to finish. Had never heard of Joan before, but will definitely be listening to more.
Strange and offbeat and absolutely gorgeous. It subverted my expectations at every turn
Me encantó
Smooth
Fabulous
Very nice! Contemporary vibes, although 50 yrs old.
Smart lyrics, great tunes, Wonderful album, It seems almost timeless and the slower songs feel so intimate. Join the Boys has the best groove, Like Fire has a great hook. Love and Affection is lush.
Muito bom, boa descoberta da lista, versátil rock setentista (só fui perceber que a voz era feminina ao pesquisar sobre)
Very surprised by I found myself LOVING this album. Love and Affection was beautiful and the double end of Like fire & Tall In The Saddle was so good
Only able to listen to the first song from the album but absolutely enjoyed the folk sounds.
Unexpectedly brilliant.
Enjoyed it, more rock edge than I anticipated
Beautiful album, superb voice.
Extremely soulful, powerful voice. Blues, funk, folk, soul all mixed into one album with different sounds emphasised in different tracks. (i.e. funk and blues in the last track). Overall an amazing album and deserves the 5.
I had never heard this album before coming to this site. Excellent album.
Star ratings suck
Fantastic album
