Overall Rating - 3.67/5 (7.33/10). Classic 50s rock and roll. Foundational to the style.

How good its Little Richard? Un clásico, influencia completa en el rock y en la música en general, entretenido, sube el animo, increible
Just joy in my ears. This is exactly what we do this for. Im sure we'd all heard Tutti Frutti, but can it stand up for a whole album? Yes it can! Imagine being young in the 50s and seeing this live, it must have blown your mind. The bouncy piano, the hyped up blues rhythm and the nonsensical, provocative lyrics would have been like nothing else. Era defining, well done and timeless. (Just dont look him up as a human being 🫣)
Tutti Frutti still bops, and it's a lot of fun for what it is. It's a bit repetitive, but we're going to round up for creating listenable music in the 50's. 3.5
This is not even my usual thing, but Here's Little Richard is undeniably a great and rich album. For me, there are a few types of albums that make me particularly happy to have embarked on the 1001 album journey. This one falls under the "historic" category; an album that apparently had great impact and was genre defining. I know very little about Rock and Roll and I didn't know of Little Richard's existence, but I'm reading that this is one of the artists that laid the foundations of Rock and Roll. So, beyond the quality of the music (considering how good and dynamic are the interpretations), this seems to be one of those very important albums.
Foundational to an awful lot of the other albums on this list.
It's 50s rock, and it sounds like it lol, fun energy though
True, Fine Mama
Big voice belting out some bold songs. This must really have been something back in the day. Bravo.
a-wop bop b-lula b-lop bam boom Se todas fossem bangers igualmente daria um 5.
Fun classic rock and roll
This album is rock and roll in its purest and most literal form. The obvious best thing about this album are his vocals, which drown out everything else in the mix. Those vocals are raw, full of passion, and energetic in the best way possible. The album's backing is mostly rhythmic piano with some horns and a consistent drum beats. Lyrics are pretty simple, but that's basically the point. A lot of it sounds very samey(coming from someone who gives AC/DC five stars on sight), but that not always bad. The sound of this album kind of paved the way for a lot of the sounds we take now for granted, and it's really good early rock and roll, but it's not a masterpiece. I think the main thing holding this back from 5 stars for me is the shitty production. Vocals are way overamplified to the point of drowning basically everything else on the album out, and when it's not vocals it's the horns. I want to hear the rhythm section more than I can here. However, this album is still a great and worthwhile listen.
1957-incredible. Still great to listen.
A-wop-bop-a-loo-mop-a-lop-bam-boom! The foundation of rock and roll.
Back to a source and it sounds bloody amazing. Imagine what it must have sounded like nearly 70 years ago. All delivered by an icon who wasn't afraid to be himself (accepting the understandable contradictions). We have a lot to thank him for, musically and culturally. 4*
Incredible!
Honestly this bangs! Had no expectations coming in but yeah this is the genesis of so much American blues rock for the next several years and so much more energetic than the Elvis albums I've gotten so far. The music itself starts to get repetitive halfway through but you can't deny its influence. Side note: I remember Little Richard on a musician episode of Wheel of Fortune (with James Brown and Weird Al) when I was a kid and Little Richard might have been the worst Wheel player of all time.
+ Ready Teddy Good vibes
rules!
short!
What would Rock and Roll be without Little Richard? Also, a song about butt segs that gets a radio edit but still retains it's meaning goes way harder than wanting to hold someones hand.
The legend!
4/7
very upbeat, positive, energizing
Fun! Fun!
That Little Richard can sing
The influence he had in music is extraordinary. Great album and just makes me wanna get up and dance! Amazing…
The beginnings of rock and roll.
Little Richard is so fun
Little Richard, rock n' roll pioneer and Bonafide legend with his debut 1957 album Here's Little Richard. Man what a musician. He's got such a vivacious energy about him, putting his whole being into music and performance. Just listen to that voice! "Whop bop a loo bop whop bam boom" bursts this album open at the seams from the get-go, "Tutti Frutti" is an amazingly rowdy number played at a breakneck pace with fierce pianos and a fantastic backing band, this song perfectly sets the stage for the rest of this record. Little Richard's presence is really what makes this album work, and stand out from the rest of the pretty boilerplate rock and pop music of this era. The songs within are all pretty standard. Most of them being renditions of pre-written material, with some originals mixed in as well (These are some of the best ones) so the contents of this record aren't gonna knock you off your socks conceptually. No it's all Richard and there's nothing wrong with that. His voice careens through each track, like a thunderball of energy, making it almost impossible not to smile and sing and dance along. It's brief, but oh so sweet. If it feels like I haven't had much to say about this one, you'd be right. This album's winning formula is in it's simplicity and the effectiveness of Little Richard as an entertainer, any points deducted from this album's score have to do with mixing issues and some of the songs just not being as memorable as some others. They are all great though, by virtue of who is playing them. A must have record for sure, and one that would put anyone in a good mood.
It's great this, loved it. A few of the songs are really similar variations on a theme but that's a sign of the times. Some absolute bangers and quality throughout
3.7
Here he is. Thank goodness they found him. He’s only little after all. He could have slipped down the back of the sofa and been wandering around for days. Joking aside, this is pretty classic formative stuff, especially impressive when you consider that this is nearly 70 years old
You can tell that he really can sing just from the cover
é delicinha
fun and energetic Little Richard. I can imagine how this would have blown the minds of the non-exposed back in the day and frightened WASP parents.
A lot more fun than I was anticipating! Even had my dog dancing in the kitchen
Perfect music to cook to, absolutely slapped. What a voice and so innovative
😎
He was a ground breaker in many ways 🎸
Welch langweilige Welt die Musik war, bevor Lil Richard endlich mal etwas Bewegung reinbrachte. Auf jeden Fall unter den besten Künstler*innen der 50er
Massively enjoyable rock and roll, clearly a massive influence on pretty much everything that followed
Transported me into a Tennessee jazz/swing bar in the 50s/60s. Such an immersive record, full of energy. Great listen.
Favourite Songs: True, Fine Mama Can't Believe You Wanna Leave
So, bad things first: Little Richard has one sound on this album. Every song sounds very similar to the next. It's unapologetically wall-to-wall 12 bar blues to do the twist to. The good news is that this sound is REALLY catchy. You can imagine him tearing up dancefloors back in the day. The energy he throws into each bar, so controlled yet so wildly effervescent, is intoxicating all on its own. Fav tracks: Tutti Frutti, Long Tall Sally, She's Got It
Classic, short, sweet, but even then, a little repetitive... Rating: 7.5/10 Favorite Song: Long Tall Sally
A slew of fun 50s-era piano boogie R&B rippers from one of the greats. Lots of shouting howling vocals. Must have really been something to have seen live. Ready Teddy, Tutti Frutti, Baby, and Long Tall Sally boogie pretty hard.
NICE now THIS is what I’m talking about. I got Elvis the other day unfortunately and made a point of mentioning the legend that is Little Richard!!! Tutti Frutti - what a BANGER no one sings the song better that Little Richard True Fine Mama - love the call and response I Can’t Believe You Wanna Leave - LOVE what the instruments are playing in this Ready Teddy - similar to Tutti Frutti in a way it’s the same sort of upbeat 50s rock & roll Baby - ooh I like this one I like how he uses a different part of his voice sweet Slippin’ And Slidin’ - nice 12 bar blues would definitely recommend to new musicians trying to get to grips with different styles particularly bassists Long Tall Sally - A CLASSIC YES. Admittedly I do originally know this song from the Beatles but like Tutti Frutti you can’t beat Little Richard’s the rasp in his voice is perfect and the WOOOOS clean clean clean Miss Ann - gotta love a good sax solo Oh Why? - he uses his higher whinier voice like in Baby which I love Rip It Up - ANOTHER great classic Jenny Jenny - powerful voice She’s Got It - quite similar to Long Tall Sally Overall I love it and much more deserving of its place here than Elvis sorry 😭 it’s not a long album which is typical of the era and I’m not mad about it it’s quick and snappy. Love how upbeat everything is and I think Little Richard is definitely one of the greats
at the start I was like 5 stars my dude and at the end like omg is it done yet so 4 is cool
Merkittävä levy ja hyvinhän tuo veteli!
Not what I'd listen to every day, but still full of life and fun and energy after 70 years, and obviously so influential.
Hyvä viba ja jammailu.
i really like this album vibe; baby -demo 🔝🔝
Here’s Little Richard is exactly what he used to shout just before he entered a bedroom. There was only one bedroom he’s never entered. Mr Len Houmous. 4.1 10/12 Rip It Up
Depende tus gustos musicales, es un disco del 57 al estilo blues de la primera oleada, pero en particular esta bueno si hablamos de blues. le doy un 7
I liked it
the OG mover and shaker of music. had a lot more fun that I expected but let’s be fair, the sax breakdowns absolutely carry this. If I heard that crazy shit in the 50s, I would lose my fuckin mind - I’d be windmilling on the dancefloor , committing to Satan and throwing my boxers at Richie within an couple mins 7 / 10 Best track/s: Ready Teddy, Rip it up, Tutti Frutti
Its at least a 4 out of 5 for me, the voice is just so nice. The music is uplifting
Long Tall Sally is one of my favorite rock n roll songs. Even though everyone has heard the majority of these songs thousands of times, Little Richard's importance is too often underscored by his persona. This is an excellent "album." I wish there were more works of the pioneers on this list.
It’s not really an album, more a collection of singles. Some of which are historic.. Long Tall Sally and Tutti Frutti.
Annoyingly fun
Pioneering rock, but a bit outdated and repetitive at times.
I don’t know how he fits all those notes and syllables into every energetic song. Little Richard is wildly influential and grossly underrated.
Okay, debut album of a very important artist, plenty of classics and only 30 mins long. I think I might like this one… Just SO much energy and groove. Impossible to feel bad listening to this and such a crucial album in the music timeline too. A pleasure to listen too and a mood booster too
Nice high energy old fashioned rock n roll. I enjoyed this listen immensely.
such groove and rasp in his voice amazing
Fun and energetic 50s dance rock and roll. Very samey from song to song in both vocal and melodic structure, but at least the album is nice and short to not overstay its welcome. Propped up by truly iconic songs, though not too much else to discover. Top tracks: Tutti Frutti; Slippin' And Slidin'; Jenny, Jenny
Always a pleasure to listen to Little Richard. Great rock n roller.
The starting point and inspiration for so many albums on this list. Its impact alone warrants a high mark here. It however is a bit too monotonous for my liking to give it the highest marks. Thoroughly enjoyed listening through the entire thing however. 4/5
Cooles Album!
Album très court, mais heureusement qu'il n'est pas plus long On est clairement dans une vibe Chuck Berry, qui donne le sourire dans la journée Mais l'album est un peu répétitif et le style pourrait être plus abouti
Classic, but not something I will ever return to - high marks for what it is though
Great 4
Cool, old-school up beat blues
Damit hat alles begonnen. Kann man auf jeden Horen. Viele bekannt Lieder dabei.
Die einzelnen Lieder sehr cool, aber als Album etwas abwevhslungslos
Very fun listen! remineded me of being at my grandmas house she loves little richard
Queer black legend jak sie okazuje, dowiedzialem sie czym jest honky tonk czytajac jego historie. Ponoc najlepsze "whooo", ale jest to "whooo" co chwila
the architect of rock n roll
Muy buena voz! Temas bailables y muy divertidos. Podría escucharlo en muchos contextos.
Love Little Richard. Can’t resist dancing.
Underbart hur rösten distar när han tar i! Varför lyssnar jag inte mer på 50-talsmusik?
Det här är anledningen till att jag har så svårt för Elvis. Det här är den riktiga kingen! Sånt jävla ös!
det svänger!
AAAAAAAAAAAH FAVS (top 3): tutti frutti, ready teddy, shes got it mençoes honrosas: slippin and slidin, oh why? um otimo album muito bom mesmo, nao tem muitos destaques mas ouvido como um projeto inteiro é bom nota final: 4/5
Typical rocking blues, good times
Surprised at how much I enjoyed this, and clearly had a major cultural impact with clear early blues and rock themes that would go on to influence many. A bit repetitive at times however hearing the signature Little Richard wooooo made this listen worthwhile
Classic.
Innovative, early rock and roll classic! Found myself singing and bopping around asi went about my day listening to it.
I was going to give this 3 stars but I caught myself bopping along to it while I was driving to work so I’m adding a star.
A-wop-bop-a-loo-mop, a-lop-bom-bom? Legend. The heavy influence Little Richard had on the Beatles and other 60s rock icons cannot be understated. A hefty proportion of the Fab Four's original compositions draw inspiration from tracks like Can't Believe You Wanna Leave and Rip It Up and Tutti Frutti. And of course they also covered Long Tall Sally on one of their early American EPs. The pure energy, high libido, and unadulterated passion running between the grooves of this record cannot be understated. This is targeted towards youngsters of the 50s. And judging by how much my grandparents love 50s-style rock, I'm guessing it was pretty effective. Even though Here's Little Richard represents the very best of early rock, it's missing that spark of variety, of breaking cultural norms and pushing boundaries, that makes a record worthy of a perfect rating. Maybe that's the 21st century in me talking. Because from what I've read, Richard *was* a boundary-pusher in his prime, and that's a big reason why his music was so successful (and, technically, still is). But perhaps because it was so hugely influential on all genres of popular music succeeding it, it feels just a little overdone. Like a shiny, glamorous 50s pastiche that everyone imitates, to the point where the original is "just another rock'n'roll record". A very good one, though. Probably doesn't help that nearly every track on this album uses a blues progression. And you can be sure as heck that other chord progressions existed by the year 1957. Romantic-classical composers made sure of that. The instrument arrangements are solid but nothing revolutionary. 4/5 Key tracks: Tutti Frutti, Ready Teddy, Long Tall Sally (The Thing)
just a fucking atom bomb lmao. obviously little richard is a pivotal bridge between rnb and rock and roll, but if thats all you know about him than you might not be prepared for at least two factors. factor one is that his raw intensity not only outstrips p much all other proto-rockers, but most rock music that would be made Period. all the way up to the final track he manages timbres in his screams that are genuine Jumpscares. second is that even tho his influences are the obvious melting pot of rnb, blues, swing, and gospel, the record does not come across at all as a representative Songbook in the way that many similarly embryotic records do. there is exactly Zero seconds of balladry, mid-tempo blues, or anything less than a powder keg of sweat. it comes across not as an incremental updating of old sounds, but as something totally new and totally Itself, with zero compromises. just kicks ur ass in!
3.5/5
What is playing if i enter in a modern '50 cafeteria, can't be let down as a record while you search for other stuff to play. Better if played through a jukebox
I liked listening to this album and appreciate how influential it has been. but because of its age/the sound quality etc I probably wouldn't just put it on. still glad i got to listen to it.
I like the vibes. A fun album.
A great album, which I liked a lot. Very old time sound (50's) that I really enjoy. I would certainly listen to this again and would likely buy an album
Outrageous and insane energy with surprisingly delicate vocals at times
Such an energy to his voice
ah the 70s, hadn't heard of this guy, very nice!
“The stem cells of rock ‘n’ roll” is a great way to describe this album. My second album in 3 days with Long Tall Sally on it and I ain’t sick of it.
Absolutely influential. Not something I would listen to often, but its place on the list is well deserved
good vibes
Classic
Every song is a variation of 12 bar blues and a little predicable, but it was the 50s so we’ll give him some leeway. Fantastic tunes and incredible voice. Loads of fun.
Fun shit. I'm sure it was absolutely transformative at the time. His voice and energy are infectious even to this day. Special shoutout to tutti frutti, slippin and slidin, and rip it up.
Everything started with this album! It might sound a bit repetitive by today's standards but his screaming voice really got people started at writing music with more gristle, awesome stuff!
Whatever might have been revolutionary about this album instrumentally has been wholly folded into the fabric of rock music by now, such that it might seem a bit tame. But they couldn't do that with Little Richard's vocal performance here, which still feels as revolutionary as ever. Sure, you'll see no shortage of singers trying to emulate him, even in his day, but he puts everything he's got into his vocals, and no one else is ever quite able to match that intensity. I mean, I guess there's like death metal growling or whatever, but even that comes off almost like a pale imitation.
Jaa zo fun natuurlijk. Wel een beetje veel van hetzelfde dus prima dat het album niet al te lang is.
Solid album, a bit dated but hugely influential.
Even if we ignore that we have Little Richard to thank for the existence of rock and roll, this is a really fun little album. Yes it's kind of the same song 12 times...but the songs are 2 minutes long and full of energy, so what's the problem? It doesn't overstay its welcome. I think a full 50 minutes of this might be a little grating but it's not, so it isn't. I really liked my time with it.
I really did like this, and it wasn’t as repetitive as I expected…or maybe I didn’t mind the repetitiveness, for some reason. But this was just fun to listen to. I had read that John Fogarty wrote Traveling Band as a homage to Little Richard, and I can totally see this. Anyway, I give this one four stars.
fun!
This is a delight.
This album was such a breath of fresh air to listen to on my way up to vermont for a solo ski trip. It actually brought up my mood a lot and I’m so grateful for that. It was a mixture of swing and doo wap type music that just makes you want to dance in a diner with your partner. The vocal range and pipes on this man is insane. The piano and bass line in the background really made it special and had you grooving to the beat.
You hear the heavy heavy blues influence but you can feel Little Richard pulling away and driving to the start of rock and roll. Songs are short, up beat, simple and repetitive lyric, not the best in terms of music today but this must’ve hit like crack in the 50s
I see the influence it had on the Beatles. It's quite repetitive, but still enjoyable.
Clearly a seminal classic. A bit repetitive, but that's rock and roll for you
So fun, impossible not to dance too. Feel good and uplifting energy.
This album sounds like an absolute hit for its time, yet it’s the kind of record that might not fully resonate with a modern audience. A quick look at the reviews confirms this assumption. While the songs share a similar sonic profile, which is characteristic of the genre, it doesn't hinder the listening experience at all. Every track makes you want to move. The album features the legendary 'Tutti Frutti' alongside 'Baby' and 'Rip It Up,' which carry a similar energy. However, my personal favorite is 'Oh Why?'. It stands out from the rest of the tracklist by being calmer, rawer, and more subdued.
Gut tanzbar
You can hear the influence of almost everything that came after this record. Surprisingly short, but a fun album
serious bops boogie wonderland to this one
An extremely fitting choice for the first album. While it's not something I'll be going back to often, I do greatly appreciate it (and the work of Chuck Berry) for being the epicenter of so much music today. For that, I gotta give this at least a 4/5.
It must have been mad to hear this when it first came out, how groundbreaking it sounded
Ahead of his time
liked it. Tutti Frutti was very good.
Now this is rock & roll!!!! Little Richard's voice carries an unmistakable energy, and supplemented by the fiery horn section and awesome piano playing, the result is one of the most energetic albums of the 50s.
Un gran álbum con un estilo clásico que me encanta. Una suma diferente a mi playlist y que, para el momento de mi vida en el que estoy, me gustó mucho.
Kinda good, not my type btw
Me hizo investigar un poco sobre su historia y sobre la formación del rock and roll
Voice like a clarinet. Energy on 100. Incredible!
Iconic shout
Bop after bop after freakin bop
I mean, can you not like little Richard?
Classic.
I can practically feel the sweat flying off this man as he walks into the mic. What a wild ride. Obviously Little Richard was a trailblazer, King of Rock and Roll, unimpeachable performer, and all around dynamo. The sound is frantic, raw, and makes you want to move. This was a fun listen. My only critique is that many of the songs follow essentially the same pattern, and by the end his wailing was wearing a bit thin. It's gonna be a 4.5/5 from me, as a nod to the progenitor of the genre, I wish I could experience the energy in a 1950s dancehall.
Really enjoyed it. Fun album.
Some good music by Miniscule Dick.
La hostia. Me encanta esta música
The last track on the Spotify app (Baby) is not on the original release. This album, a debut, could be considered a greatest hits album since many of the artist’s singles were included here. It’s a fast moving, high energy record, with lots of hit songs.
Great debut from one of the founders of rock n roll
piaciuto molto quest’ascolto, forse non proprio 4 ma 3,5
Needs a relisten but it's Little Richard
рак енд рал
-1 for Jenny Jenny, otherwise banger.
Great album - pure raw rock n’roll - full of energy and joy
Good boogie vibe
Sounds a little dated today, but Little Richard's energy is on full display
This is just great fun. Tutti Frutti and Long Tall Sally are the big hits, but I don't think there's a dud amongst the twelve. 12 bar blues is hard to beat.
ik heb net elvis geluisterd dus even te veel van het zelfde. kan het wss minder apprecieren nu dus dat wordt verwerkt in de score
Vocals: 8/10 Lyrics: 6/10 Instruments: 8/10 Likely to listen Again: 8/10 Overall: 7/10 Good instruments, but it all kinda sounds the same and it is a long album. Good background music, and instruments, wouldn't listen on my downtime
Amazing energy, vocals, horns and sense of time/place. Infectious, fun and enjoyable, but also mercifully short - not sure I could cope with much more!
Familiar and fun
Really good
How important is Little Richard to the legacy of rock'n'roll? Let's start with The Beatles. They began as a club band playing Little Richard songs note-for-note, and Paul McCartney famously learned to sing by copying Little Richard's whooping. Mick Jagger borrowed the strut and the sneer. James Brown took Little Richard's command of chaos and turned it into funk. David Bowie and Prince absorbed his gender-fluid fashion sense and the flamboyant, theatricality of his performances. Jimi Hendrix actually played in Little Richard's band early on, picking up some tips on how to own an audience, long before he ever set a guitar on fire. What else can I say about Little Richard? His incredible screaming voice is like gospel energy pushed into pop music, and his frenzied piano playing is percussive and frantic at the same time. This first album is packed with absolute rock'n'roll classics. "Tutti Frutti", "Long Tall Sally", and "Rip It Up" to name but a few, all make their first appearances on this album, and they're still energetic, rockin' tunes almost 70 years later. Little Richard created a blueprint for modern rock'n'roll, but you could argue that his influence goes even further. Punk's sneer, glam's glitter, soul's excess, hip-hop's bravado are all indebted to his energy, attitude and presence. Little Richard made it acceptable for music to be loud, messy, energetic and untamed. A wop bop a loo bop a lop bam boom.
So much of this lost would be influenced by this. It's very much of its time, but very good.
inventor of rock!..?
9/10
Further proof that Little Richard was bonkers from the jump. I love how amateur the production sounds, like he recorded on a four-track in his garage with friends. That may not be far off—J&M was a tiny studio, and it sounds like they set up some tape, found some other players, and let Little Richard go. When it comes to early rock 'n' roll, I'll take his raucous energy over just about any of his peers. FUN FACT: The space that housed J&M in New Orleans is now a laundromat, but still has the logo embedded into the floor when you walk in. When I visited in 2011, it also had some pictures on the wall of the artists who recorded there. It's both poignant and hilarious.
It kind of all sounds the same with the 12-bar blues and howls, but still a good sound that still pops. And I have some sense of just how pivotal this all was in the founding days of rock n roll. Interesting to see that basically all of Little Richard's hits were from his first two albums and he basically never really charted again. But goes to show a couple seminal tracks can last a lifetime.
Very energetic, very fun. A pretty short album although that's not a bad thing. Even though the album does have an older sound and style (the old r&b), i think it stands the test of time quite fine.
I am pretty sure I came out of the womb knowing the words to Tutti Frutti. This is (in theory) a compilation album, which is against the rules for this project, but I will give this one a pass because it was released in 1957 and "albums" weren't necessarily the focus of artists and record companies. Hit songs were the aim and Little Richard hit the mark consistently in that aspect. Seminal artist and seminal set of songs that helps form the basis for what many artists attempted to copy in the future. Fun album.
A fun little blues album. Reminds me of something you’d hear on a jukebox in a classy 60s pub.
이런 노래 좋다 신난다…… 재즈 좋음
It was ok
Here’s Little Richard ist das Debütalbum des US‑amerikanischen Rock‑’n’‑Roll‑Musikers Little Richard (Richard Wayne Penniman).
Really good, no real complaints. Not mind blowing but still good.
A foundational and incalculably influential record in the history of popular music, with a bit of historical imagination this album makes it easy to understand why rock and roll was seen as so exciting, even dangerous, when it first emerged. Today, nearly 70 years on, I'm still impressed by the power, feeling and conviction in Little Richard’s vocals (which are front and centre, dominating the mix), and it's this that allows an album of twelve more or less identical songs to nonetheless hold my attention right to the end. One star off for lack of stylistic variety, but wow!
the hits! his voice <3 disc 2 > disc 1
A tour de force. A small militia of tornadoes. This album is awesome and obviously immeasurably influential. My only ding on it is that, despite being about 29 minutes long, it somehow still manages to get a little repetitive. That said, it's definitely a must-listen.
Good vibe and his voice is great, unfortunately not 5 stars, it got a bit same-y in my opinion. Really good album otherwise.
very fun to listen to, very powerful voice but still maintains balance and levity
Old timey ice cream shoppe music.
4/5 ⭐️
Music to dance to. Repetitive but musicality galore, evidenced by a demo with an out of tune piano!
There's a lot of energy in this album, but that's pretty much Little Richard in a nutshell. Some classic Rock 'n' Roll, and tunes that kick-started an entire musical movement. My rating : 4.5 of 5 stars.
Little Richard is the EPITOME of the sound of traditional Rock & Roll. Say what you want in these modern times about this guy's music, but he is the reason modern music exists, and is in my opinion the most influential person in musical history. Plus he had more energy than a 6 year old in a candy shop during the time period Elvis imploded on the toilet.
A pioneer that couldn’t be captured in a studio recording. I mean it is a lot of the same flavors but those flavors are delicious. The rawness in the voice is amazing.
So good despite the repetitive 12 bar blues format
adding every one of his "woo"s straight to my bloodstream
Really solid, makes me wanna dance and drink a milkshake. Well encapsulates the old timey rock and roll. Think I prefer this to elvis tbh.
Everybody say thank you Little Richard for inventing rock and roll
Burst onto a piano like a flamboyant bomb of hoots, hollers, frantic piano & horns is the flamboyant enigma that is Little Richard. Is he gay? Straight? BI? Religious? He was reverend at a certain point in his life. Did he know that Prince raided his wardrobe? You can't help but smile & want get up & dance when you hear his music. Woo. I grew up listening to Oldies music in my childhood, so this is comfort music. 4 The following exchange is something I stumbled upon while searching for the dirty lyrics of Tutti Fruitti: Little Richard: [improvising on the piano] A-wop-bop-a-loo-bop-a-good-hot-damn! Tutti frutti! Good booty! Tutti frutti! Good booty! Tutti frutti! Good booty! Tutti frutti! Good booty! If it don't fit, don't force it! If you grease it, make it easy! Bump Blackwell: We have *got* to record that! Little Richard: What? Bump Blackwell: Yeah that! *That* is a hit! Little Richard: You're kidding me. Bump Blackwell: No, no, no, no, I mean, we gotta clean up the lyrics though. That's a... that's a definite. Dorothy, get in here! Little Richard: But wait a second. Bump... Bump Blackwell: This is gonna be...! Dorothy! [Dorothy runs in] Bump Blackwell: C'mere! Quick! Get in here! Dorothy: Yes? Bump Blackwell: Okay look, Richard, Dorothy is a lyricist. Alright, I want you to sing that song to her. Dorothy, I need you to write me a clean version of it in a half hour. Okay? Dorothy: Okay, okay. Little Richard: [Embarrassed to have to sing a dirty song to a lady] But Bump, that song has some terrible, terrible words! Bump Blackwell: Oh trust me! She's heard it all. Dorothy: It's true, I have.
Little Richard made the exact same chord progression interesting for 30 minutes and all he had to do was scream, slam on the piano, and hire a bangin’ horn section. Good shit
7.5/10 - Classic, highly influential. Does get a tad repetitive for my tastes.
Great fun
o elvis só sonha em ser icônico assim
It's clearly an important album and important life changing music. The energy is incredible and set a template. It's maybe unfair to judge against more modern production standards but I found it really difficult on my ears. The rest of the band weren't given enough room in the mix and the whole effect of the record seemed claustrophobic and overly compressed. Given someone of Richard's dynamic range it felt like the technology of the time hasn't been able to properly render his ferocious talent. God can only imagine what seeing him live would have been like. But as a listening proposition I found it hard going. I enjoy other records from the era so I'm not sure it's just technical limitations that explain this.
Tutti frutti
short and sweet
I already knew a few of the songs from here, but many were new to me. Some of Little Richard's best songs are on this album: Tutti Fruity and Long Tall Sally. I also knew Ready Teddy as well. This is a great album showcasing his immense talent. My only complaint is it's very short at only 28 minutes, but that is forgivable given the timeframe. I would listen again for sure, but I may prefer to seek out a compilation rather than this album specifically.
beautiful, I just wanted to dance
Classic. What an amazing voice. The musicality and songwriting were so simplistic, but it speaks to the quality of the musicians involved that these songs are so timeless. There's a good variety between early rock n' roll and more old school blues. My favorite song is "Long Tall Sally (The Thing)," which demonstrates Little Richard's vocal style perfectly. "Oh Why" is another great track that is sung in a lower, more controlled register. Great sax solo, making this blues tune fun and dancable. A great product of its time.
I really liked it, it was fun and reminded me of stuff my grandma would put on. I thought the idea of a second disk w other takes of the songs was neat, I haven’t seen that before. I also liked his voice and the slight rasp to it.
This was a total surprise. Loved the uptempo songs and the horn section.
Do yourself a favor and look up what Tutti Fruity is about.
The very definition of defiant, charismatic, energetic badass. If I was a teenager in 1957, this would be my jam.
Totally groovy, currently jumping around
7/10 really liked “can’t believe you wanna leave” and “Rip it up”. The whole album has this fun and energetic vibe that it is so amazing
This guy was pretty stunning.
First album from this list chosen for me. Really every song kinda sounded the same but it doesn't matter because they're pretty much all rippers 8/10
definitely not something i would’ve seeked out and listened to on my own but i liked it. 7/10.
Amazing voice. Loved the screaming parts while the saxophone is blaring out with Little Richard. So many songs you just want to twist and shout too. Fantastic album
tutti frutti- classicccccc i love little richard so bad! banger thank you for helping to invent rock and roll!
Discazo. Un montón de canciones que me ponen de muy buen humor y me hacen recordar lo mucho que disfruto la música de los cincuenta y sobre todo el género. Genial para levantar el ánimo.
Reminds me of my desire to learn to live like my parents! I like it.
oh cool the website isn't saving my notes anymore anyway, this was fun! repetitive but that would bother me more if the songs weren't all two minutes long.
Second time for this album - wow, still so good. Such great songs and what a great performer. Always so fun to listen to.
WOO WOO HOO TOOT TOOT YEAAAAAAH
I think he might have worked even harder than James Brown.
It's old, and the production sounds old, but the songs themselves are still good and make you want to move. Despite the age it still holds up, and pretty much the entire album is stacked with bangers. Very obviously a blueprint for later music, and undeniably good. I think the instruments are overall too quiet, with Little Richard taking center stage of the mix, but that's not the worst thing to happen when the music sounds this good. Some moments also get a little harsh, but modern listening equipment couldn't even be imagined back then, so I'll give it a pass. Songs also sound pretty similar, but are just different enough to stand separately. Overall there wasn't anything I greatly disliked, rather it was mostly highs with some tracks slipping into mid. Favorite Tracks: Tutti Frutti, Ready Teddy, Slippin' and Slidin', Long Tall Sally Least Favorite Tracks: N/A
The best kind of funky soul
Cool, expansive vocal styles. Some driving, fun tracks. A couple ("True Fine Mama") that don't hit quite as hard. "Oh Why?" so interesting.
I liked the beat of the music, and the vibe it gave. I would definitely listen to it if you’re into the 60s vibe or theme.
they dont make album covers like this anymore
Rockn roll, leg deine Tanzschuhe an, Nimm die Partnerin und los gehts... Tanz dance baby dance....
It's nice simple 50s fun. Good vocals, good vibes, fun sounds all around.
su voz retumba en mis cimientos, raspando satisfactoriamente el oído. Sin embargo, me da la impresión que algunas canciones mantienen el mismo ritmo y melodía, solo cambia la letra.
24/12/2025 Good rock n roll vibe, great way to start the morning. Spotify listeners: 1.7 million
groovy and new to my ears i also liked it, i wasn't bored of it at all and it kind of cheered me up maybe its also the caffeine?
So fun! I have never taken the time to listen to Little Richard. I really enjoyed it.
Really enjoyed this album
Full of classic songs, that I've heard many times, but never listened to in album format. A really fun listen for my amtrak ride.
i was today years old when i realised tutti frutti by elvis presley is not actually by elvis presley 😭 it’s a really fun, enjoyable album and it respresents that 50s vibe very well
Ok for the record - Little Richard stole his whole act from another dude. Does that matter? Maybe. But why did LR make it big and the other dude is a footnote? Maybe it's Richard's delivery, his particular vocal mannerisms, his flamboyance. I have no idea. But whatever "it" is, Here's Little Richard has it. Good Lord. I just can't argue with fun, energetic, exciting early rock and roll. FOUR STARS
The foundation of rock and roll! Very timeless and Little Richard has such passion in his voice, it’s hard not to bob your head and groove.
"Stem cells of Rock and Roll" indeed. Often imitated, never duplicated. The songs go hard and Little Richard has the golden pipes.
I enjoyed this, swingy sounds, kind of know a few
So much energy, what a big sound. Little Richard is so fun to listen to. This is only diminished by the (significant) issue that these songs are very similar in their their progression, rhythm, and overall feel. Fortunately, it's a style that Little Richard defines and excels at.
Favorite tracks: Tutti Frutti, Slippin' and Slidin', Ready Teddy Truly iconic, what a voice! This was a really fun album, but it did start to get old by the end of it. I'm sure Little Richard absolutely killed it live in a club, but falls a little flat listening to him by myself in my living room.
A debut greatest hits album? 12 songs, none over 3 minutes… foundational for r&b, rock, and punk??
4.5 kinda cool estava um bocado de pé atrás por não ouvir muito este gênero mas até gostei
perfect album to start off this journey knowing i have been in a very deep phase with the 50s right now ! I knew a few songs already from this classic like Tuttit Frutti but never fully dived into it as an album. Loved it honestly but i think a young ear i need to get more used to the genre tto proprely appreciate it to its fullest but it's an amazing album !
The people on this website reviewing this and giving 1s or 2s saying it's "repetitive" probably register zero on an EEG. There are way too many people here who have no business speaking about what might be some of the most influential music ever conceived. And so what if it is repetitive? That's kind of the point of blues music, moron
Classic
This is just a really fun album with an upbeat energy throughout. It feels timeless even if not all of the tracks are bangers, there are gems like "tutti frutti", plus none of it is actually bad. Maintain a brisk tempo/beat which works well.
Obviously a foundational piece Rock n Roll history. Not particularly mind blowing by any means by 2025’s standards, but journey back ~70 years, and you’ll realize this album was revolutionary. And there are still songs I recognize today.
A documentation of the time
Maybe the most fun album on this list. I would love to see him play live. He's having the most fun in the room and it's infectious
How does he do it
Classic
Fun album
Sometimes these old timey rock albums by superstar personalities feel like greatest hits albums, even though they aren’t. All these tracks are ultra-familiar from countless sources over the years, never heard within the context of any kind of album. This is like a greatest hits album missing Lucille. Which is actually pretty impressive when you think about it. Except of course, Lucille is missing. Still, pretty much a banger, performed to the max, even if the substance is on the shallow side.
The two year old went bananas for this. The Wiggles are dead to her now.
я люблю рок н ролл шо я ще можу сказати кек
цей альбом додав трохи сил та енергії, навіть захотілось потанцювати під таку музику
This is a classic album in Rock & Roll and R&B history. It actually collects several of Little Richard's early single hits onto an album for the first time on this 1957 release. I had never heard the record until mid-2024, when I received the excellent VMP ROTM vinyl version. I queued it up, and I am not sure I was ready for what came next. The album came out firing with Tutti Frutti and never let up - so much energy and excitement. Rock was new genre at the time and this album shows the importance of Little Richard to the foundation of the genre. And the songs - Long Tall Sally, ready Teddy, Rip It Up,, Jenny, Jenny, Slippin and Slidin, so many classics. If you want a blast of energy and to move your body, then you must listen to this album.
The historical importance of this record cannot be underestimated, and it continues to kick ass 70 years later.
It’s good ig
It’s great fun, and I’m conscious that it would’ve sounded revolutionary on release in the late 50’s. To my ear it all sounds quite samey (Rock n roll is literally a one chord progression genre), but there’s no denying its quality.
I would love to have been there at the height of rock n roll when this album dropped, gone to a Little Richard gig, and danced myself silly because you know that would have been a blast - I defy anyone to stay still while listening to this bop-fest. Sure the wall to wall 12 bar blues can get repetitive, but LR keeps this album short and sweet - it's pure entertainment, enjoy it. Put it on to cheer yourself up and have a wee dance around the kitchen
Big swingy. It's very same-y, but what is same is at least pretty good. There is however a limit to how many love-songs with names of random women I can listen to on one album. This is something I'd never put on, but also would never complain if someone else put on? Obviously completely fundamental for what came afterwards. I'm leaning 4 for historic significance.
Little Richard wales so elvis could run
This was such a fun album, loved every second of it. Great songs, perfect length and now I finally understand Kennedy Davenport’s snatch game. Huge tick from me.
This really can't be judged by the modern standards of what makes an album, because it predates them, but good god this is just a fun collection of songs. Is this something I want to listen to on repeat? No, but that's okay because I don't have to in order to appreciate the sheer impact he had. We owe so much to Little Richard and other Black artists for pioneering so much of modern music as we know it.
This was awesome. I didn’t expect to enjoy old school rock & roll as much as I did here. Of course Little Richard is one of the pioneers, but I was surprised at how well this held up. My only gripe is that the standard 1-4-5 chord progression can get a little repetitive after 12 songs, but I also think have to appreciate this through a historical lens. This was the new hotness in 1957.
a classic
Fun, raw and easy to listen to. A landmark in rock and roll and a legend in all his power. Very good.
lovely little fella
8/10 A huge amount of popular music from the subsequent 70 years can be traced back to Little Richard. He was instrumental in the movement that transformed rhythm and blues into Rock and Roll, he was a flamboyant and vivacious performer and his vocal style can be heard echoing through the years in voices as diverse as James Brown, Robert Plant and Freddie Mercury. The number of artists who cite him as a pivotal influence is simply staggering, and his place in music history is set in stone. As an album, this sounds a lot like what it really is, a collection of singles. That’s exactly what an album was in 1957, so that’s to be expected. But it’s so full of fire, drive and fun that it’s essentially impossible not to get hooked into the groove and tap your toe or bob your head. I can only imagine what a Little Richard show must have felt like in the 1950s. It sounds like it’d be pretty riotous even now, but 70 years ago, it must have been completely off the charts, and this album does a fantastic job of capturing that vibe and presence. The musicians all do a fantastic job and there’s bags of energy from start to finish. With that being said, and despite the occasional change of pace, the biggest criticism of this (and other early rock ’n roll music) is that it’s all very much pinned on the 12 bar blues as a backing, so things do get a bit samey after a while. There are some fantastic hooks and solos scattered across the songs, but the underlying music was very much established and adhered to throughout. That’s not really a criticism, more an observation. From a production point of view, the vocals are perhaps a bit too loud in the mix and the music can get a little lost. They also get a bit distorted when he gives it full beans, but I think that may well be an intentional artistic choice, as it gives that little something to the louder parts of the delivery. This is an album very much worthy of listening to for any music fan and, while I may not revisit it often, it has certainly cemented its place as one of the pivotal records in the development of modern music in the west. Tutti-Frutti - Welcome to rock ’n roll. “Whop bop b-luma b-lop bam bom” is quite the way to kick things off. It still sounds vibrant and urgent to this day which, given that it is almost 70 years old, is quite remarkable. His vocal delivery has verve and bite, there’s swing and pace to the band and it’s got some great hooks. What a song. True, Fine Mama - The intensity drops a little here, but it’s still insistent and has a great bit of edge to it. The piano and sax have some lovely moments, but it would sound way more pedestrian without the little bits and pieces of bit that Richard throws in with the rawness of his vocal delivery. Can't Believe You Wanna Leave - This is a bit more mundane. It’s well produced and performed, but is more of a slow toe tapper. Again, there are some great moments from the lead vocal, but it doesn’t deliver the full-bodied drive of the more pacy numbers… Ready Teddy - …like this one. So much pace, some great soloing and that dropping in and out of the band for Richard to give the vocal some beans is just great. Some of his runs are so, so satisfying and it’s kind of hard not to move to something like this. It’s a bopper and hard not to have a grin on your face with stuff like this. Baby - This swings. There’s some solid piano work in there, which is a little too far back in the mix, which is a little bit of the shame. Another nice sax solo in there too and Richard’s vocal delivery is, as usual, vivacious and compelling. Slippin' And Slidin' - We get a bit of a different lilt to the rhythm here, which is nice. There’s a bit more subtlety to the vocal delivery here, which makes for a bit of a change. It’s another decent song with a couple of nice solo sections. Slippin’ and slidin’, peepin’ and hidin’ is a particularly amusing lyric given what he got up to later in his life. Long Tall Sally - Another classic. It’s another in the canon of ‘Richard sings something while the band stops and then they all come back in together to kick the beat back in’ songs. It’s a really great song and his vocal is absolutely top notch. Quality grit, drive and control to it. Miss Ann - Another change of pace. This is another one with great swing and a toe-tapping vibe. These songs are decent and break up the higher energy ones well, but they’re not the most musically interesting. Good vibes though. Oh Why? - This follows on from the previous track really. It’s another decent one, but these slower numbers don’t have the get up and go of the more pacy numbers. But the album would be relentless if it was all bangers, I suppose. Rip It Up - There’s a slightly different feel to this with the staccato horns adding a bit of a different flavour. The drums are pretty cool on this one too. It fits to the standard formula of the rest, but that slightly different sound that they put together is welcome. Jenny, Jenny - His little falsetto ‘whoo’ is so good here. It’s a very one-note song, but you can just feel the energy of the performance firing out of the speakers. I can imagine this being one hell of a party in 1957. She's Got It - Another great vocal intro, and a pacy, swinging groove. It feels like they’re maybe pushing this one to go a bit too quick, in fact as it gets a little loose in places, but it’s so full of verve and energy, that you can forgive it. A lovely way to close out the album.
Swinging! Def awesome to hear like early early rock and roll and his massive influence on the Beatles. He is so damn good
I've heard Little Richard tracks before but never listened to a whole album at once. I'm glad I have done and I appreciate what he did for Rock and Roll more now. He's full of energy and puts that into his vocals, but it's not just the vocals. The whole band is exuding that same energy, from the banjo and trumpets to the boogie woogie piano. It all adds up to a high energy album which would have been odd for the time and still not completely usual today. The lyrics are from a different time and place but despite that don't spoil what is a classic album.
Good old rock and roll
Definitely sounds dated, but there's great energy throughout. A fun album overall.
Tutti Frutti - 5/5 True, Fine Mama - 4/5 Can't Believe You Wanna Leave - 5/5 Ready Teddy - 3/5 Baby - 4/5 Slippin' and Slidin' - 4/5 Long Tall Sally - 5/5 Miss Ann - 4/5 Oh Why? - 4/5 Rip It Up - 5/5 Jenny, Jenny - 2/5 She's Got It - 4/5 Average score: 4.1/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ i liked it. it's short n sweet. much like all blues, it's kinda repetitive (ex: Ready Teddy is just Tutti Frutti with different lyrics). however, the length of each track is so short that i can't really complain much
It's hard to hate on this, the influences are so fresh and fun, as dated as it sounds it makes you want to move. I'm thankful for having listened, but I also don't feel any kind of need to have a Little Richard project in my collection afer this. I appreciate the historic value, there's some added decimals in my final rating because of it. 3.7/5
Of course would have heard a lot of these songs before but never as an album. I guess it's an historic album. Still sounds lively if a little flat, and samey. 3.5 rounded up Heard before? No Owned: No: 29/112 (25%) Will I get? No
And rock & roll was born.
This man is very horny.
Classic rock and roll foundational album.
A lot of 50s rock albums have lost their punch over the years, but this is not one of them. The furious piano, burly brass, and especially Richard's piercing voice still hit today. He's obviously the star of the show, yelling and hooting and bringing tons of energy to these songs. I haven't heard anything like that on a record this old, and it clearly paved the way for more vocally emotive genres like soul. The best songs here are the ragers, but the slower songs provide a nice contrast to them. On that topic, this is still a 50s rock album, so the variety is limited. There are at least three songs that follow the same formula as "Tutti Frutti," and many of the others can be grouped by style as well. Still, the short length and piano / horn interludes keep things flowing and make sure the album never gets boring.
This album has a lovely energy and vibrance to it that makes you tap your foot without even realising it. It's non-stop, fast paced and full of life throughout, with no low points or slower moments, which on the one hand makes it a super fun album to listen to but at the same time makes it quite samey and one note. Overall, thoroughly enjoyable, but maybe lacking some depth or variety.
Why is he speaking to me like this. So so so baller to basically have 4 versions of the same song on your album. It's a good song and you should keep playing it, Richard!
A fun listen and absolutely deserves its place on this list
I didn’t know this album before, though of course I know the opener, “Tutti Frutti” — mostly from the hilarious Val Kilmer movie Top Secret!. Pre-Beatles rock ’n’ roll isn’t really my thing, but this record is pure joy. It’s music made for clapping and stomping — full of wild piano runs and honking saxophones. It’s hard not to smile listening to it. Everything about it feels alive and raw. My favorite track: “Slippin’ and Slidin’.”
Start of almost everything on this list. Good fun
Discazo. Banger tras banger.
very typical and standard blues, not my kinda music but i can appreciate it. and theres some classics in there too
4/5 - Enjoyed it overall, not something I'd listen to regularly, but it's very interesting to listen to it with the context of when it was made and its historical importance.
I'm not sure what to write. I definitely wouldn't have listened to the full album if I didn't do this challenge.
Energy for days and a growling shout that rumbles me on the inside oh so right. Iconic, sure, but very samey. That's blues I guess.
Great classic, only tends to be a bit dated, so four stars rather than five.
Super fun.
Respect your elders! But more importantly, respect the Black community for doing it first! Every. Single. Time.
So classic. Can't go wrong here.
It's quite fun
Bra album, har funnit att jag gillar dom här, vet inte vad dom kallas, svängiga afroamerikanska låtarna från 50-talet
Brilliant
All rock 'n' roll of this era sounds the same to me, but I don't think that's a problem - It's kind of supposed to. It's all 12 bar blues, the same pentatonic scales and arrangements and some lyrics about a girl... There's a reason Marty McFly is able to say "Blues riff in E, watch me for the changes and try to keep up" and the band knows exactly what to play - it's just the way the music was at the time. Instead, the real artistry of little Richard (and other contemporaries of his) comes not through interesting structures or pushing compositional boundaries, but rather pushing tonal boundaries at the birth of a genre. The tone and energy that little Richard and his band bring to this whole album is incredibly good - the vocal delivery is unreal, the band plays with such precision and such expression and they don't let up for a second. So much of what is on this album went on to inspire so much of popular music since, and I can forgive the sameness of the album on account of the sheer performance that's on display.
I like this early rock 'n' roll stuff.
No song is over 3 minutes. Every song is filled with amazing instruments, the centerpiece of course being the piano. This album is part of the foundation of rock n roll.
Cleansed my soul and ears after suffering from the last album I reviewed. I'm feelin' it now.
Great album!
Some good ol rock n roll
