Reviews (page 7 of 7)

Listening quietly while lying next to ezra don’t wanna wake him up but wanna listen to an album. Sort of unspectacular but some fun stuff. A 2.5 (edit: marimba and horns came in and made me regret giving getz a 2 cuz this is a true 2.)

I would argue the cover is actually quite shocking. A good rock album in my opinion, fun guitars and so on. But prob not a revisit for me.

I could just put the same comments as for the last Jane's Addiction album. Basically, I don't know why I don't like them more - right era, right genre, right attitude. I *think* there's just something about Farrell's vocal stylings that doesn't work for me.

Favorite Track: Jane Says

Not a fan.

I didn't enjoy this album very much. I thought the instrumentals were good not great and I thought the vocals were very run of the mill. I didn't find any songs catchy or worthwhile. Not for me I suppose.

you can hear that there are at least two guys in this band not wearing shirts

I didn't care for it

Quite conventional? There are variations, but it's not experimental/messy enough. Like the album title, there's nothing shocking (a disappointment). I like the instruments and I think I enjoy the latter half more. The album cover, however, is one of the worst of all time. I doubt whether I will come back to it often. I feel like it's a exact 3/5, but the website won't rate decimals so I'll say 2/5 because on a second thought, I don't favor the vocals much.

Less screaming would have been nice

Very weird mix, unique but not enjoyable

Big echoey 80s rock. A bad time for music production

A lot of the songs sounded the same, not in a good way

Cold turkey. Don’t really like Farrell’s vocals and the songs are okay at best. Also for some reason the steel drum on “Jane Says” is really distracting to me.

I just can't. I really tried to get into it. Maybe it's the low sound quality or the unclever and weird lyrics. At best they sound like a worse version of Blind Melon. Most of the time they sound like an annoying hair band without a clue. This was painful.

The first track kinda interested me but rest of it was nothing special

Mwah, teveel geschreeuw Heel vluchtig geluisterd Sommige nummers leken wel ok Vooral standing in the shower Geef vooral een rating zodat ie in mn lijst komt Zou m eig opnieuw moeten luisteren om t een reele kans te geven maar mn 1e indruk is medium

Not great Wasn't a fan Like 2 songs were ok

Meh album. Bad 80s rock in my opinion. There's a couple nice songs, but I found it exhausting listening to this. **

Rating: 4/10 The vocals are awful, instrumentally I don't think it's that great either. I respect that they experimented with a lot of different styles but I don't enjoy it.

dear diary, today i learned that i don't like yell-singing in music, especially not if the lyrics are thin

didn’t impress

I liked the song about being in the shower but every other song is like “we said this crazy thing… are you shocked?!?!”

The instrumentation was ok the vocals weren't great.

# 283 : A lot of people liked it, but not my cup of tea. If I had to pick one track it would be "Mountain Song"

Mmmm not sure

Jane saaayss, this albums pretty bad

das andere war besser

A pretty mediocre album imo. Maybe in context of the time it was released it's good, but I find it quite dull

Alright, nothing special Top tracks: Idiots Rule, Jane Says

no thank you

Dos o tres temas y lo saqué

This album is OK!! Good music and functonal lyrics that are occassionally good. After a few tracks it gets very dull and boring. I am not sure the album knows what it is and get lost inbetween many 80s genres. Favourite song: Couldnt pick one Least favourite: Everything is ok Album artwork: Not one to show the kids.

That was grating and annoying. I never want to listen to Jane's Addiction again, and I'm sure I can quit any day now.

Perry is a grade A jackass, but that Navarro sure has a pretty mouth.

started strong but i was thinking "whatttt a dragggg" only 5 songs into this 45 min album and it was downhill from there.

"Reviewing Nothing's Shocking for Rolling Stone, Steve Pond praised Jane's Addiction as "the true heir to Led Zeppelin" and called the album "simultaneously forbidding and weighty, delicate and ethereal", while also distinctly more "hardheaded and realistic" in sensibility than Led Zeppelin's music." bzzt wrong!!

Appreciate some of the musical work. Inspired by tons of emotion. Just absolutely cannot do the vocals. Screetch!

Another one that has it's audience, but never did much for me.

Best song: Standing in the shower...thinking, Pigs in Zen Vibes: hard rock cafe LA Themes: Violence, politics

Usually with these albums, I listen to them and then have a look at the accompanying Wiki page. In this case, I read about them first and apparently they nearly split up in a dispute about royalties before they’d even recorded the album, with lead singer Perry Farrell claiming 50% of the rights with another 12.5% on top for the music. The band disagreed. That’s probably the most interesting thing about this generally unremarkable 80s alt rock album. YMMV.

Quite liked it, instantly forgettable

its music for sure

More hair metal, punk, and even ska than I expected. A couple of nicer, slower tracks with the grungy, meditative sounds I was expecting.

Seemingly stuck between a played out 80s hair metal sound and an underdeveloped 90s punk vibe, a few strong tracks barely keep the rest of this subpar album afloat. Similarly, some strong guitar solos can't elevate the toneless vocals and the oft juvenile content. Favorite tracks: Mountain Song, Pigs in Zen

All a bit too shouty. Which is boring. Found this really tedious. I probably need to listen to it gain to be sure, but I have some nails to drag down a chalkboard instead. Blah.

A lot of the music was pretty gnarly but the whole thing was just all right

When is good, it's great. But there is a lot of water time here.

Never been a fan of Jane’s Addiction, or Perry Farrell. That’s nothing shocking.

One song a recognized, the rest were ok.

I've heard several songs off of this album before. I've liked them and other songs by Jane's Addiction in the past. Listening this time, I'll admit I was not in an ideal atmosphere with kids running around (on headphones - not sharing these guys sailor mouths with my 6 year old) and I was also trying to work. But, I have to say, their sound did not do it for me this time. Maybe I'm just too old now (47 now, but was an angry teen when the album came out), but it didn't resonate with me. My favorite song by them is still Been Caught Stealing. I made a music video of this song in high school with lots of criminal movies so I know the song the way you end up knowing it when you edit along to the music. I liked Jane Says and Ocean Size previously, but this time the whole thing felt like an assault and I didn't dig it.

This album should be removed in favor of an album you should listen to before you die.

“Jane Says” is a great song. The rest of the album is just okay. Perry Farrell seems like kind of a jerk and I don’t like his screechy singing. I hear less Zeppelin than Van Halen and RHCP and shitty hair metal. It’s not the worst album but it really doesn’t do it for me.

Not my jam. Very emo.

Not as ... brash ... as I was expecting. Not heavy hair metal, something very much more thoughtful and idiosyncratic. There's an undercurrent of early grunge and 90s alternative. I found the overall sound a bit weird. Very cold, totally lacking chunky, low and mid range warmth. And the noodling guitar shredding a bit OTT. But I quite enjoyed listening to it.

Look, to naked women with burning heads, an abrasive glam rock-ish sound with zero hooks, that annoying victory-carrying vocal style... Yeah, nothing is indeed shocking.

Did not like this, very annoying.Like rhcp but much worse. The guitar work is cool but nothing else is good really.Wish it was better.

it's shocking how poorly this has held up

Definitely has its moments .

Er no.

Felt a little meh to me; like a guy with a face tattoo, but without the aura of menace like a Mike Tyson would have.

Jane's Addiction does absolutely nothing for me. The most exciting thing about this album is the cover, unfortunately. For me, anyway, their sound is quintessential "whiny 90s" and it just grates on me. I know that this album contained several radio hits and had an influence on music generally, but I just don't like it.

I quite like some of this album. A lot I could take or leave. High: Jane Says (of course), Summertime Rolls, Ocean Size Low: Standing in the Shower Thinking I'd give it a 2.5 but rounding down because I have a sore throat

The music was great but the singer has a really annoying voice.

hello dave navarro host of ink master (2012) that’s a cool guitar. perry farrell sucks. what is this drive rock bands have where they feel they NEED to have a frontman. if you’ve got a great bassist guitarist and drummer, i think it should be more widely accepted to not have some grating dumbass up at the front vomiting into the microphone.

You can definitely hear how this album is transitional between 80s hair metal and 90s grunge. Ultimately, I’m not a huge fan. The vocals are so distinct but also polarizing - energetic or annoying?

I don't know there's just something about that middle time between punk and grunge that just doesn't do it for me.

Not for me

not for me.

Not bad, but top 1000? I don't think so, as it's nothing special.

Saw Jane's Headline a tour with Audioslave, Incubus, Queens of the Stone Age and A Perfect Circle in 2003. One song into their set, the audience started making their way out of the stadium. Perry Farrell stopped the song to yell at the crowd and call us pieces of shit. Awesome. This album did nothing to help make me a fan.

Really didn't think much of this. Have to say I didn't give it loads of attention, I was doing other things but I just found it generic and a bit annoying

A couple good songs but I do not want to intentionally listen to this album ever again

Some parts of this are good, but not really for me. I can definitely see some influences of this towards other bands I like though.

Pretty heavy rock with muted voice. Overall didn’t really enjoy it

Jane says the rest of the songs aren't as good.

I CLENCH MY FIST AND BEAT IT aside from that this sucked

This album was so boring. Nothing’s Shocking? More like Nothing’s Interesting am I right folks

Mountain Song is fun but this album is hella boring otherwise.

Parfois rock, parfois tranquille

I’ll be frank. Not the biggest fan of Jane’s Addiction. Or much Alternative Metal, really. I know they were an early forerunner of bringing alternative music to the mainstream with their successful albums and later by helming Lollapalooza, but their music never struck much of a chord with me. Their lead singer especially sets me on end for unexplained reasons. A good album for alternative metal fans, but not for me.

On paper I feel like I should like Jane's addiction but it turns out I just don't.

Hard rock. Fine but not memorable. The vocals are a bit annoying. Rating: 2/5 Playlist track: Jane Says Date listened: 17/03/23

Not sure this would even make the cut for the Monster Truck Madness soundtrack.

Not my fav but I see the appeal

80s rock album that’s trying to be thought provoking and experimental but ends up just sort of gimmicky. Pretty forgettable. Best: ocean size, jane says, pigs in zen Worst: standing in the shower…thinking

Both my dad and I were waiting for this to be over, which says a lot because a) he chose this over the other option I gave him and b) the man knows and appreciates rock/metal. He even thinks I can be a bit harsh with my ratings but he agreed with me here. We both liked "Idiots Rule" though, because "at least it has trumpets". By the way, the other option I gave him was Destroyer by KISS.

Mid pack. I hate the screamo-shit it just gives me a headache. I’ve always loved Jane Says so I was pretty excited to listen - little did I know I was set up for disappointment. Loved Summertime Rolls. Thank you boys was the advil this headache of an album needed

Very screamy, some tracks started off nice but then the whiny voice came in and it went to sh**. The beginning of “Ocean Size” reminded me of “Flowers for Zoe” by Lenny Kravitz, so when I was listening to this album for the fourth time and heard the similarity again, I decided to ditch it and listen to “Mama Said” by Lenny Kravitz so I could enjoy my time.

Something about this era of edgy alt-rock just doesnt really land with me. I thought the album was kinda boring. Definitely had some highlights, I've always liked Jane Says, but who doesn't though. Won't be revisiting anytime soon.

Jane is addicted.... to bad music

Shockingly, a bit too much noise? I mean, it's not my cup of tea regarding rock.

forgettable.

Up the Beach: 2,5/5 Ocean Size: 2/5 Had a Dad: 2/5 Ted, Just Admit It: 1,5/5 Standing in The Shower... Thinking: 2,5/5 Summertime Rolls: 2/5 Mountain Song: 2,5/5 Idiots Rule: 2,5/5 Jane Says: 2/5 Thank You Boys: ?/5 Pigs In Zen: 2/5 Totaal: 2,2/5

notes - debut wlbum by janes addiction - there were a lot of internal tensions in the band during writing and recording - including arguments about the distributions of royalties - lots of critics called this the continuation of led zeppelin and classic rock - basslines are a big part of this album, often melodic and important to the songs - this album suffers from the same issues as guns n roses - its just too much and the vocas are quite shrill and grating fav - ocean size - good energy rock song without feeling overdone least fav - pigs in zen - feels very basic and uninspired 2/5 - definitely not for me

The music doesn’t live up to the album cover, featuring way too much shouty shoutiness to cover for the relative lack of musical creativity (though, by American rock standards, this is s as creative as it gets).

I wanted to enjoy this album, but the rock was a bit too intense for me to really get into the instrumentation and lyrics are kinda nonsense, very forgettable

Several times I think I might really get into it then it loses me.

Nothing special

Very hard. The psychedelic labeled song was rough.

Decent album

Not really for me...

Aggresive raw nerve. Here and there it works. Here and there it is just noisy. Too noisy imo.

its like a pop metal not my vibe

Just not a fan of Janes Addiction

Just another 80’s band.

The majority of this I would solidly classify as “unlistenable and actively bad”. Jane Says is the only redemption and it’s only just decent. I think I hate the squeaky, whining vocals. 3/10

I didn't get addicted to it...

All kinda jumbled together the few times I tried to listen. Nothing shocking honestly

Better than the last Jane’s addiction album we had. Still not my bag baby. I know I’m supposed to be reviewing the album and not the list itself, but why are there so many artists with multiple albums? I’d rather see an artist’s defining album and then move on.

I hate to recycle, but about a year ago we listened to Jane's Addiction's album that followed this one. Apparently I felt pretty much the same with that one as I felt today: "I hated listening to some of this album, but not all of it. I enjoyed some of the creative moments here and there." Yep.

Certainly an album whose enjoyment largely seems to depend on you "being there" in a particular age in rock music. Coming into this now with fresh eyes, unfamiliar with Jane's Addiction as a musical entity, nothing stands out in either song-writing, instrumentation, and certainly not in production. Then again, this was a definite "timely" album that meant a lot in its age and now to newcomers will likely just sound painfully dated and corny.

Favourite Song - Had a Dad One for karaoke - Ted, Just Admit It (I’d shout she’d is violence for 10 mins straight) One for a run - Standing in the Shower Boss guitar as expected but I just don’t like that type of singing unless it’s Axl Rose

It’s fine. Jane’s Addiction never does anything for me, something about their sound gets on my nerve. Except for Mountain Song. Absolutely sick.

I've never really got this one. Jane Says and Mountain Song are both pretty great but the rest of the album is quite lackluster. The vocals are grating and the mixing is really not good at all

I was quite disappointed by Nothing's Shocking because I should like them; they're heavy, riffing, angry and loud, but rarely all at the same time and with enough quality to cut through and keep me interested. Mountain Song does that so well, but not enough others. Even Jane Says as an acoustic number turns me off because the lead singer has a voice that doesn't hold up to scrutiny. 2/5.

Really not much here. Jane Says is a really good song, but other than that there's not much to recommend it at all. 2/5, pushing a 3 because of the strength of that song. Quite cringey in places.

This was a big album with the cool skater kid crowd. I was not a cool skater kid and I didn’t care much for it then or now after listening to it 25 years later.

Thinking". Poco más. No creo que sea algo imprescindible.

Nothing shocking. Nothing gained.

except mediocrity rewarded

There's a decent metal album (one well ahead of its time) somewhere on this LP, it's just buried underneath dated gratuitous guitar solos and the repetitive vocal stylings of the 80s.

I don't like being screamed at.

When someone put this on for me when it came out in '85, I wasn't too impressed. Listening to it now, it's not so bad, the guitars and lead singer give it some edge. I find the radio single, Jane Says, annoying and a sell-out. If you want an edgy alternative rock band from '85 who also wrote classic pop tracks, try the The Pixies.

This is the debut album by American alternative rock band Jane's Addiction. The album was received well critically, but it failed to chart within the Top 100. The sexual themes on the album including nudity prevented the music from being on MTV, but this also added intrigue to the album. Eventually the album sold a million copies and is certified platinum in the US. This was a decent album of alternative and hard rock music, but only the single "Jane Says" stuck out to me as amazing. Still it was great to get a chance to check out this band's first album.

not for me

It does have energy to it, but not my kind.

I was peripherally aware of this band but had never listened to them. More butt-rocky than I thought it would be.

Jane’s Addiction’s creative approach seems to be “if something’s worth doing, it’s worth overdoing.” Pump the brakes, boys.

not in any spot that is relevant to where i like at the moment

they are trying and Navarro is a pretty good guitarist but I have always hated Perry Farrell and the sound of his voice. Just not enough here to make it stand out for me.

Thought I’d like this more than I did. Oh well never mind

I had heard of but had never listened to Jane's Addiction before today. So, I can honestly say I've tried listening. Didn't add but I'll check out "Ritual de lo Habitual" one day.

Thought I would like it more than I did

The best part about Jane's Addiction is Dave Navarro's eyeliner.

I guess Dave Navarro slept with someone who did this list, because there's no way this album is in the top 1001...

Tuneless swagger rock, but you have to respect Perry Ferrell on some level

I don't think I learned much from this listen. They have some bops, it's funkier than I remember, but feels like a boring alt white guy with dreads to me.

Great guitar playing from the legendary Dave Navarro (I LOVED his playing in his one album stint in RHCP), but here I'm not a huge fan of the songs, Farrell's weird squeaky voice, or the paper-thin production that sounds like it's trying to sound huge but just sounds empty and distant.

Do like Jane Said, nothing else

Was happy to see this pop up - as I know the name so well, but not the music. But, it was just well produced bland rock. Nothing stood out - apart from overuse of 'Jane' and swearing. Unremarkable.

This style of music is just really not for me. All it sounds like to me is whiny rock and I just don't find it enjoyable to listen to

// Favs: – Score: Strong 2

Hated some of these songs. Found a couple that I liked but I don't think I'd listen to this album again.

Nicer Rock hat mich aber richtig genervt

Ne.

Not really my vibe dont like the dudes voice but the acoustic guitar with the metal sound is kinda cool

Not really my taste, two reasonable tracks at the end

2.5 but going low

Not for me.

270921 13:31 2.5

Some very okay rocks songs, with maybe two good ones. Not worth talking about when there are so many albums that do what Jane's Addiction does but better.

Too heavy, not a fan

Eh, I don't feel it.

Crazy album… interesting band but didn’t like this one

Wasn't a fan of this album. I'd heard Janes Addiction before but something just got me wrong with these songs. I didn't like the vocals or quality.

2,3 Kon me niet bekoren.

I get why people would like this but I don’t…

The only reason to listen to this is Dave Navarro’s guitar work and even that isn’t enough for me to come back to it again.

Not my thing.

Truly nothing shocking

Some songs are OK but overall gives me a headache with too many strident noises.

Nothing stand out or memorable.

More 90’s rock stuff. Not fun, but not as bad as some of it.

Meh... not a big fan really. Shocking!

Full disclosure, i didn't listen after yesterdays album by them.

It was fine. Got some hits, but most of the rest didn't grab me.

Les di su oportunidad y la desperdiciaron.

maybe it's because i was making pizza while i was listening to this and i dropped the dough on the ground but this sucked ass imo

no. could not find one moment of enjoyment on this album. unpredictable and hardly musical.

The debut studio album by Jane's Addiction is chock full of go-nowhere sub-Zeppelin power chord riffing topped off by a vocalist who *simply cannot sing*. It wouldn't matter if the music on this record were stellar (it ain't), Perry Farrell's raspy no-timbre non-voice totally torpedoes the proceedings. "Jane Says" is the only cut here that rises out of the buzzy guitar muck but even it isn't enough to move this essentially derivative record out of one-star territory.

Irritating garbage noise. Shit vocals ruin any guitar or drum efforts. Zero stars

"Since its release, the album has continued to receive widespread acclaim and is now regarded as one of the most important alternative rock albums of all time and one of the greatest albums of the 1980s." What are you talking about. What are you saying. this does not even beat the "i would prefer listening to this than white noise" threshold, let alone constitute an album worth listening to or rating critically. this is the muddiest sounding album i've heard in a minute and i pretty much have nothing to say here. headache inducing from start to finish

Hard rock fatigue is setting in. I don't like the singing, I really don't like the cover art, and honestly I do not get the acclaim at all. Perhaps albums that are calling back to 10 years prior just don't age well 40 years later, but I was mostly bored out of my mind listening to this. It's like a blur of noodling and samey song after song. Perhaps if I was listening to this in a time period oversaturated by awful hair metal I'd see it as a breath of fresh air or bringing what used to be good about hard rock back, but divorced from that this was a nothing of an album. But hey I like "Jane Says", so I guess there's that.

Musically directionless and meandering. Coupled with very strange vocal performance & production choices make the songs something you can only enjoy in several-second intervals. To say nothing of the pretty derivative overarching sound, I'm surprised this album garnered and traction at all

I really disliked this. So discordant, shrill, loud and annoying.

Another 90’s band I just can’t get behind. Never knew they made music in the 80’s. I found out why. To me this is just dressed up hair metal that’s slightly evolved into something much more annoying. I can’t tell whether I mess with the guitar playing or hate it. I will say this, similarly to these other late 80’s/90’s bands, the vocals absolutely ruin it for me as well. Maybe I’m just getting PTSD from the Pumpkins but why does this feel like their coked out cousin band? Who knows, could be. I have the same qualms with both 90% of the time. “Stand outs:” Summertime rolls, Jane says

This album cover is ironic and “cool”,whatever it is, just kinda unsettling. For this to be my first impression of it, I am supposed to suspect it will be subversive, and surely I was wrong. This is your most run-of-the-mill basic alternative rock from that era. I do not think this in any way has changed my mind. I know I have heard worse records here, but this is not a comparison; this is merely a true, objective look at this and the record prior, and how I hear differences, yet they are minuscule. Onto the actual songs, I could not list a single one out, but Thank You, Boys, a 1-minute interlude where actual interesting music is being played, and wow, I have heard that song more than I would care to admit. I just think Jane's addiction is more interesting or shocking than the next band that is edgy and cool. It is just noise that is played in the video settings screen for tony hawk pro skater.

3/10 I appreciate that this album was significant at the time (it definitely doesn't sound like other rock from the late 80s), but I just can't get past the incredibly immature lyrics and overdone instrumentals. It sounds like music made by and for a teenage boy. Not great.

One or two good songs

I hate everything about Perry Farrell’s whiny nasal ugly voice

Felt forgettable

Metal. No me gustó ningún tema.

Hate it

Nothing shocking? More like nothing worth listening to.

I wasn’t into Jane’s Addiction during my teens (80s/90s) and I’m still not into them! Pretty, Pretty, Pretty Bad!

Standard-issue alternative rock grooves built from churning guitars, elastic bass lines, steady drums, and casually dramatic vocals move this album like music playing over a bar’s sound system—competent, vaguely edgy, and fine as atmosphere, but ultimately nothing special once you actually focus on it.

I have hated Jane's Addiction since the 80s. I make a concerted effort to listen to 100% of every album. I can say that from my long-standing hatred of this band and the first three tracks, that's highly unlikely this time. Perry Farrell's voice is grating and shitty, his delivery only accentuates his vocal shittiness, and listening to him and his bullshit concoctions is what my "special part of hell" will be. Note to my FBI agent: I'll tell you whatever you want if you threaten to play any of this band's music during my interrogation. Another review mentions ANOTHER Jane's Addiction album on the list? Are you fucking kidding me with that shit? Trash. It's great when dictators are dragged out into the street by the people they oppressed and all, but this band disbanding was probably the single most important event for the betterment of humanity.

Jane's Addiction is not my cup of tea, I guess nothing's shocking. . .

Alternative band that liked to push the limits. Some good songs.

Just the cover makes me not want to listen to it

Oli vaikee kuunnella loppuun

*No music, just screaming vocals and banging instruments. Many tracks offensive to some people

Strange, intense headbanging music.

Kinda terrible, the soft screaming style is really bad Will I listen to again: 0%

Quite enjoyed the first two or three notes but it fell away rather badly after that before descending into screaming.

Horrible, loud, and noisy!

** No!

Yeah this album sucks dude; there's no way around it. I really thought the guitar could save it, but the lead singer is just so goddamn annoying. There's no cohesion and it doesn't know what it wants to be while simultaneously bringing nothing to the table (other than singing about pissing in the shower). I was just waiting for this one to be over after the first 5 minutes.

Not for me

I don’t like Perry Farrell’s voice. I only knew Jane Says. This was not for me.

I can't imagine why anyone would put a Jane's Addiction list on any list of recommended albums, but here we are. The guitar work here is often great, but I like absolutely nothing else about this.

Music for try hards by try hards 1.5*

wow I didn't know they were SUCH trash

This one did not do it for me. I can see why people like them and high school me might have. DNF.

Shockingly bad.

Started out kinda meh with Up The Beach. Ocean Size was also mediocre, but had some good guitar shredding. Had A Dad was also fairly forgettable. Then the album just took a turn for the worse. The rest of the songs were annoying and repetitive. Only one that stands out is Summertime Rolls. Best song: Summertime Rolls

Tie two cats together at the tail, throw them over a clothesline, record it and put stadium reverb on it, and it would be better than this album.

Up the Beach is pretty good. Atmospheric. Ocean Size is ridiculous but unexpectedly enjoyable. Had a Dad is fairly dull. "Ted, Just Admit It..." I'm seeing a trend emerge - they're pretty dull? Which is impressive to achieve when they've so much going on. Could not finish this album.

Boring and absolutely not actual at present time

At least having a female name in a band is some nod towards diversity. Strong case for Perry Farrell's vocals being my least favourite in rock.

Some really good rhythms and beats underneath all the anger….some real talent, unfortunately the anger was coming through a bit strong and overwhelmed the music..so much so the music was lost and all I could hear was aggression..it’s a fine balance but for me that anger was all I could hear after a while.

Nine of 1001... I do own Ritual De Lo Habitual via exposure to Been Caught Stealing back in the day, but know absolutely nothing of its predecessors, so am going in completely cold with this one. To these ears, this album is at its best in its more psychedelic, echo drenched moments. The shoegazing, however, is punctuated with more hair-metal flavoured guitar gymnastics and dated alt-funk-rock to much lesser effect. Farrell's destinct modulated vocal style eventually grates due to over-exposure. Nothing's Shocking certainly has its moments, but there is no individual standout track, nor is there anything of great substance to make me want to come back for more. Mostly loud and in-your-face, not necessarily not in a good way. Energetic but exhausting. Intriguing but shallow.

Nope. Doesn't really resonate.

Not for me. 1/5

Really not my vibe no cap

Edgelord music for burnouts with undiagnosed ADHD who grow up to fall down the alt-right pipeline after becoming convinced that the earth is flat. That whole non-genre all starts here with Nothing’s Shocking. The hype for this album and the fact that it’s stood the test of time as a “good album” is incredible, because how did anyone tolerate anything on this record, even in 1989?! I would give anything for this band to not only play in sync with each other, but to have any semblance of song structure. Jane’s Addiction truly is just stoned out noodling, and while the bass makes an attempt to hold the center together, even that can’t stay focused enough to create even an inkling of cohesion. The amount of times where random ass instruments came in drove me insane; every quirky cowbell and woodblock made me pull my hair and audibly scream. This chaos is only made worse by Navarro’s flashy guitar, and while I respect his talent, there’s a time and a place for flash– and this isn’t it. But the parts that kill me are Farrell’s atrocious vocals, which sound like a cat getting a rectal exa,, while singing about how ✨radical✨ it is to be broke and drugged-out. And I use the word “radical” to simultaneously mean “politically and socially against the norm” and as ‘90s filler lingo for “cool to suburban children of divorce who can do a kickflip.” Farrell is perhaps the worst vocalist on any record on this list– and among the worst lyricists, too– and it’s never because he’s making interesting choices. No. The man just can’t fucking sing. As if that wasn’t bad enough, I’m then killed again by some of the worst mixing I’ve ever heard on a record in my entire 32 years of existence. I get that there are times when bad mixing can be an aesthetic choice, but this doesn’t sound like that. It sounds like a bunch of stoners who didn’t know what they were doing who went into the studio, turned the dials to whatever felt “right,” and didn’t think twice about it. Every song on Nothing’s Shocking sounds blown out and muddy, while also sounding like every track is almost too isolated and not blended together at all. The mix quality alone ruins the only two songs that even come close to saving this album, “Mountain Song” and “Jane Says.” Now, “Mountain Song” was probably never getting saved, because it suffers from the same composition discombobulation as every other bad song on here, but the mixing annihilates its tepid attempt at cohesion. On the other hand, “Jane Says” IS a good song, but I have NO FUCKING CLUE why the guitar sounds like that, like it’s being played under water. Truly, the mixing makes this actively unlistenable. If Californication started the Loudness Wars that ruined music for almost 20 years, Nothing’s Shocking planted the seeds, and that’s almost worse. Nothing’s Shocking reminds me of the Burnout Band™️ of my generation, Hollywood Undead. While sonic opposites on paper, they achieve the same end goal aesthetically: edgy, non-conformist unfit for straight society so they use their youth to be abrasive and aggressive without any form of tact. It’s music that is supposed to piss off your parents because it’s ✨supposed to✨ sound bad, man! But once you reach legal drinking age, you’re either supposed to have grown up enough to realize that, well, it was just bad, literally. If you haven’t grown up enough by that point and are listening to it for any other reason besides nostalgia, well, it’s probably because you’re buying your weed in a playground parking lot and have a fascination with girls who just turned 18. The generational textures may feel different, but Jane’s Addiction are meant to be outgrown, and despite the trash material displayed on this record, for some reason, they haven’t suffered the same fate. Well, I’m here to say they 100% should have. Sure, man, nothing is shocking, except for how little you’ve changed– see you at the 10 year reunion if you’re not locked up by then.

Ok but that’s all

Nothing special about this. Don't know why it's an album that must be listened to but maybe I am missing the point. Not really bothered actually

Awefull

p603. 1988. 1 star, Shouty American guitar rock with no tunes, a whiny lead vocalist, and nothing much to say. "It's just corporate dick rock. It's Van Halen with different makeup artists." - Dave Barbe.

Another record that I can see has great historical significance, pioneering a proto-Grunge sound, but which I personally think is terrible.

This was just annoying.

I would like this album more if i was younger. It's too much noisey for me at this moment

1. up the beach - 1 2. ocean zize - 0 3. had a dad - 0 4. ted - 0 5. zhouuer - 0 6. zummertime - 0 7. mountain zong - 0 8. idiotz rule - 0 9. jane zayz - 1 10. thank you boyz - 0 11. pigz in zen - 0

Schon das Cover schreit laut „Finger weg!“. Die Geraüsche der meisten Titel tun selbiges. Fazit: Nein, mag ich nicht! Gar nicht! 0/5

Spazzy, not awesome

I listened to the first few songs and had no desire to listen to the rest. Moving on.

hated it!

Rollo digno de la mejor causa. Prescindible.

Per me è no

janes addiction doesnt deserve to lick the dust off the toes of a bunch of dads playing surf rock in anytown, america. not good, bad solos (wow! u can go fast on a scale, how newt!) boring tones, empty, vapid chord progressions, the worst vocalist in the usa. ummmm give me anthrax over this idiot anyday. please stop.

Did not care for this at all

Whoever came up with this music style must've solved music for them

So hard on my ears.

This feels like generic brand Zeppelin, really forgettable. None of the tracks particularly stood out or hooked me. The singer can wail, but it reads as whiny rather than powerful, and I couldn’t recall a single musical passage if you asked me to. This is not to say they are bad at what they do, they are incredibly gifted from a technical standpoint and you can tell the guitar and drums are going off, but I didn’t find it catchy or to my taste.

Rubbish

Vilken skitplatta. Hittar inget positivt med den. Maken till gnällig sångröst.

Endless guitar vicious circles leading nowhere. Vocals without any fresh impulse, neither in melodic nor in lyrical ways. I didn’t went into JA in the 90ies, and I am not in the 2020.

I’m sure someone likes them but that person ain’t me

did not listen

Nope, did not like at all

Nothing interesting. Ferrell’s voice is also grating. A nope for me.

Made me dislike Jane Says

Jane's Addiction doesn't really do much for me. The only song worth listening to was Jane Says...the rest are just noise to me. I honestly would rather listen to Porno For Pyros. 1.5/5

Þetta höfðaði bara ekki neitt til mín.

“Owing to the cover, nine of the eleven leading record store chains refused to carry Nothing's Shocking. It was issued covered with brown paper.”

I did not vibe with this album at all, couldn’t understand the singer and a few of the songs really sounded similar. I am not generally a fan of rock from this era and this album really was grating to me.

I couldn't care less about this band. It just isn't interesting to me. 80's shred guitars, played and recorded sloppily. I do think Perry Ferrell's voice cuts in a mix really interestingly. But this is just bloated and boring music to me. Highlights: Nope.

Too exploiting of a cover , I’ll skip

Ok, listen, I can’t stand Perry Farrell’s voice. I could barely make it through this album. If you know anyone that says Janes Addiction is their favourite band, please be a friend to them and get them some help.

Can’t stand this band, won’t listen.

I did not so much enjoy most of the songs on this. Verged on a bit too much screechy-ness for me. But okkk.

Went home today met Doug half way

ehhh not Adamo's addiction that's for sure

Schlocky crap
