Reviews (page 8 of 8)
Hm. I was kind of torn in a couple different directions for this one. The band’s sound is somewhere in the middle of the triangle of Coldplay, Keane, and early Radiohead. I don’t think any of the writing in The Last Broadcast was as tight as that of any of those three bands, though, so I found myself kind of disliking (or getting bored by) the songs. Like damn, “There Goes The Fear” is just the generic brand version of “No Surprises”. Some similar comparisons to other, better songs could probably be drawn for many of the other moments on the album. My guy the lead singer also sounds EXACTLY like Chris Martin, which didn’t do him any favors in terms of setting this band apart. But some moments truly gave me chills! Lurking behind the somewhat bland central songwriting elements was a darker, mysterious and compelling backdrop that felt unique or at least more interesting to me. The beautiful, solemn choral interlude or breakdown of “Satellites” is a good example of what I thought Doves did really well. In general, the interludes and the transitions and the breakdowns were my favorite parts of this album. Shoutout to the Suzuki Omnichord in “Sulphur Man”! The stretch from M62 through Satellites felt the most well-defined in terms of the band’s unique sonic identity, I enjoyed it quite a bit. But besides that, my experience listening to The Last Broadcast was basically boredom bordering on discomfort, punctuated by moments of “Whoa, what’s that dark shape way over there?” Some redeeming qualities here, but probably not enough for me to come back to this album in the future.
We’re on a bad streak here. I’m not a fan of this band. Maybe with a vocalist who didn’t sound like store brand Coldplay or with arrangements not so overblown we’d have something to work with. But this sounds like a band that takes its basic ideas really seriously and the result is just off putting. That said, it was fine background music while I made a big salad for my volunteers. And one song, Satellites I actually find pretty catchy and moving. But that’s it.
Meh
I feel like there’s been a bunch of albums recently where people said they didn’t like them cuz they were all over the place and I was like that’s what I liked about it. But this was like the bad version of that to me. Just many different types of boring that almost was good at times then veered elsewhere.
One song I realy like Black and White Town, otherwise music for weeee d
Doesn't do anything for me, it's not bad it's just not meaningful.
Just didn't do anything for me, very boring listen if I'm fully honest.
I didn’t know the Doves until now. The album is OK. If it was being played somewhere I wouldn’t turn it off. Not sure I’d go looking for it either but I do think I may listen to it again sometime. … if it’s being played somewhere by somebody else. I read in one of the reviews of this album that the band was up for a Mercury Prize in 2002. According to an article in the Guardian “ the Mercury music prize…is perceived as the "eclectic album of the year award". If by eclectic they mean uneven ^^^then , OK, I agree with that. If they mean interesting then not so much. ^^^The musical interlude(Where We’re Calling From) and the song unlike the rest (Friday’s Dust). I think those are the ones. I listened to this over three days, which says something about how compelling it was(n’t). I found out that Ms Dynamite won the prize that year. I don’t know who that is either. I am tempted to listen to some of her/their/his music but I won’t now, just in case that album comes up later in this 1001 albums journey. *Fun fact: ‘Heathen’ by David Bowie was also up for the same prize that year.
This album completely failed to make an impression on me. There were a few moments of blissful, beautiful noise, but that's about it. Maybe my head just wasn't in the game. Also, I kept getting distracted by how often this sounded like Coldplay.
Better than expected...
1 song on here is very good and the rest stink
Every song sounded like that one Coldplay song. Lost interest by the third track. Forgettable.
The larger the sample size, the stronger the evidence: I just don't like indie. Rounding down from 2.5 stars.
Generic & dull. Did not enjoy.
2.5 a lot of dull filler
Quite an achievement, this album: I listened to it from start to finish, and found myself completely indifferent - for better and/or worse. Problem is, this isn't what we seek to get out of our music. [Also, too frequently it felt like this album is a Coldplay emulator.]
Aimless with good melody but nothing distinctive
Reminds me of a lot of British alt-rock bands from this general era (a number of which we’ve had on this list already): early Radiohead, Oasis, Coldplay, Travis. If I was ranking those bands, that’s the order I’d put them in and I’d rank Doves behind all of them, at least on the strength of this album. The songs are fine but not much jumped out at me. I don’t think the band has as much personality as those other acts. “There Goes the Fear” is a solid track though.
Meh
nothing too memorable
This was some boring-ass alt-rock. Stopped listening halfway through.
The main vocalist kind of drones on, which is an immediate turn off. I don't know if it's just his voice or if it's overproduction, but whatever it is, I don't like the sound. Too moody and boring for my tastes.
Meio palha na real
This is not in my copy of the list, so I'm assuming it's been scrubbed from musical history. There was one Doves album on there, but not this one. I gotta say though, this is kind of a thin, wiffly, watered-down Radiohead blended with some of the twinkle of their contemporaries who fell more under the Britpop umbrella. It's quite boring, really. I actually forgot I had music on at one point.
Not much to take away from this one. A lot of pounding and scratching.
There Goes The Fear makes me happy, I didn't know who it was by until now. The rest gives me slightly Coldplay energy and I don't think I mean that in a good way
Not good. Was trying to review this on the weekend and accidentally reviewed the Velvet Underground as 2/5⭐️ before listening to it. I then listened to that album, since I did not want to listen to this not good one again, and it was fantastic. Which made me even more upset about accidentally rating it 2/5 and this album by Doves is the object of my ire. It’s a bad album and it should feel bad.
A few bright points but generally a pretty droopy record. Is this landfill indie?
Really not sure why it's on this list.
Hi-There Goes The Fear, Caught By The River Lo-There Goes The Fear Pretty OK after a few listen throughs, but not really memorable. There Goes The Fear is a really enjoyable track up until the very annoying noises at the end. N.Y. does kind of the same thing...Here's an idea, guys: When you're done with the song, just END IT, instead of devolving into aural torture. Album ends with Caught By The River, which is a good track (and pretty famous)...The rest of the tracks are more Stone Roses type of brit-pop than Manic Street Preachers and it's not really my style. It's fine, but a little moodier than I like and I probably won't be listening again.
Never heard of these guys. Now I know why.
Bit dull. Britpoppy Coldplay shite. Almost gets good in a couple places but most is dreary forgettable monotony. Last song caught by the river maybe the best?
A little whiny for my tastes
This is my first time listening to the Doves. I like their atmospheric sound.

not at all my thing
Fine. Pretty bland
meh. sounds like coldplay.
More slow indie rock
Didn't particularly care for it. Really dragged along. Forgettable. Boring.
Snore
Not heard this before and to be honest I find it a little dull and repetitive. Reminds me a bit of Keane and that general "Millennial Malaise" type of Indy Rock. It is OK but not a favourite of this listener. Best Track for me is probably the Robert Fripp co-written "M62 Song" which at least has some nice lyrical guitar work. "Last Broadcast" is also a good tune but too reminiscent of Guy Garvey and Elbow for my liking. A little maudlin for me.
Saved Prior: None Off Rip: Pounding, Caught By The River Cutting Edge: None Overall Notes: Coldplay and Keane ate these guys' lunches and I can't say I'm mad at that. That's what you get for taking a few too many pages out of the Oasis playbook.
Solid Brit pop. Evolution of Oasis, Proto Coldplay with a sprinkle of Sun Kill Moon. Some of the songs had a big sound and good breakdowns. Many times I’d be into it and they’d take it the wrong direction, a boring direction. As a whole it felt a bit saccharine and got a bit repetitive.
Never really listened to Doves much, but dead keen to given the story that Uncle Chris was in the band that became Doves with Jimmy Goodwin and went to school with Jimmy. I recognise 3rd track There Goes The Fear, had no idea it was them. Halfway through and unfortunately this isn't really my bag, the genre never has been, original Manchester indie. 2/5
nickelbacsk, 00'er
Decent. Much prefer their first album. 5/10
Nothing really remarkable about this album. It's not bad but it just sounds like every other alternative band from the early 2000's. Favorite Tracks: "There Goes the Fear"
wat een lelijke cover there goes the fear again kan ik wel smaken
Only a rung or two above Coldplay, this lot.
Ah, the "indie dirge" genre. Haunting melody on M62 song that I kinda liked, but overall this was a just a downer which I didn't appreciate being afflicted with.
"Inside a heart of summer soul" MotA: Pounding
Didn't liked this in my first listening, neither in the 12th. If you are into this kind of music, I recommend Soda Stereo. They do it better
Not sure what to make of this bland album
Listened to some of it but it was pretty bland stuff.
I want it to be better than it is! 'Pounding' is great, and I thought the rest would be like that - hypnotic, building, etc. But a lot of the songs are quite weak...
It's got some nice songs and some awful ones. As a whole I feel it kinda boring. Particularly liked: M62 Song
false
Not as terrible as I worried, but nothing special to my ears either.
Don't know anything about this, so I'm guessing something kinda electronica-y. Nope! Actually regular 2000's Rock. Pretty decent sound. No songs grabbed me yet. Actually kind of dull. Emotional Rock with no particular sound that stands out. Probably a 3, maybe a 2. Forgettable.
The color grey, Paint drying, Steve Davis, train spotting. Just some of the things more interesting and inspiring than the Doves.
Reportedly a great british band from early 00s overshadowed by the likes of Coldplay, Travis and co... Nah, they are pretty average, veery far from those acts. There Goes the Fear is an impressive track though
A little Arena Coldplay for my tastes. Kind of draining to listen to, but each song was good enough.
bluf!
I was so bored listening to this. But I made it through. I've heard worse music, so it gets a second star.
I’m not quite sure how this is super influential or anything. It’s ok.
What's with all this shit britpop?
This album really really bored me.
This was fine. Nothing I'd write home about. Would leave it on if it was on the radio.
Two standout tracks, pounding and there goes the fear. The rest is pretty unremarkable, atmospheric sometimes dirge like.
Aika pliisu ja alkoi tuntumaan loppumattomalle...
chill, inoffensive background music
Run off the mill
2002. Key Songs: There Goes The Fear, Pounding
I can see some pretty cool ideas in here. I love the drones and at points noisy guitars. I do not care for vocals though, whenever it comes in I am jarred. Also the overly compressed and drum production hurts the record at times. 2.5/5
What is this, who are they? Starting from the album cover art: this is absolutely awful. The album takes a whopping 77 seconds to start - I guess there's an artistic decision behind that? What I'm hearing is decent early 2000s music with British pretentious lyrics straight from the late 90s - this is the artistic prole of Beck, the Radiohead, and maybe something like (UH my horror) Moby, with something else I can't quite point my finger at - but this time around, it's Bri'ish. They're like the slightly better version of Coldplay. Same level of nothingness, to be honest, but with at least coherent lyrics. It's pop-rock-ish, it's mostly easy going, it's not interesting at all, though. I can't imagine myself putting this music on in any other occasion, since it's a honest nothingness of an album: these guys are chewing words on nice guitar riffs, the production is godawful as per British tradition, and the lyrics are just... well, Radioheady but without the depression? Yeah, if there was a "SKIP" button here, I'd have pressed it today. Like, seriously, who thought this is an album belongs to a list of the top 1001 albums in the world? I mean, I know the answer: a british white guy, as british as bad food is. Because that's something only a self-important man in his 40s can believe. Can I give 0 stars? Because this has 0 chances of belonging to this list.
Why did this album make the list? I’ve heard better white noise. Waste of my time.
Dull
Robert sure dug deep into his shallow bag of British bullshit for this one.
Was this one really long boring song, the same boring song sung twelve times?
Oh, a mediocre Brit Pop album ... it's not like we already had 900 of those on here.
Aggressively forgettable
The first album on this list that I've never heard of before. But I've been around long enough to know what this is. This is Mercury Prize slop. The kind of band that gets a massive, forceful wave of hype that instantly crests. It's a reminder of how British this list is, in many ways. As for the album itself: sometimes a six-minute song can feel infinitely longer than a ten or fifteen-minute one, a track that strains the range of a "normal song" but isn't long enough to become something else, and this album is full of those. Even "M62 Song", that sounds like a ninety second interlude track, drags on for a brutal four minutes. Bad!
-1 for having a song called "The Last Broadcast" and then subjecting me to two more tracks 🤮
154. boring
I know it's boring to point out that this sounds like a crap Coldplay, cyncically replicating the radio friendly pop rock formula of slow grandeur, big arrangements, and overwrought emotive vocals, but they're a boring band so it's ok to make a boring observation about them. There are some pretty parts when the get vaguely into Friday Night Lights post-rock territory, but don't worry the vocals, or some microwaved britpop riffs, soon come along and ruin them. Caught by the River is a good closer though.
Where We're Calling From
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
bomb whatever london suburb these guys are from
Extremely boring. I had to force myself to listen to this.
The Last Broadcast is as unremarkable as Britpop ever was. The dream pop aspects were miserable. "M62 Song" was grating. The vocals were (mostly) not good. I guess some of it sounded like some decent rock music, but the length of 54 awful minutes made this a 1 star album. As album #1088, The Last Broadcast is my last fucking Britpop album.
the idea that I should listen to the Coldplay that didn't make it is an insult to the very concept of time
There’s a lot of Shitty Beatles on the list but you know what? There’s some Shitty Coldplays too.
I don't think I like this late 90's early 2000's brit-pop style. It's boring. "Caught by the River" is probably the best track here, but boy is it a slog of an album. The wiki said they wanted this album to be more upbeat than the last one. If this is them "upbeat", their early work must be depressing as hell. Honestly, that might make the sound work better. If I get the time, maybe I'll check out the earlier stuff.
Dull. Has a couple bright moments but basically it just sounds so 2002, like it’s kind of a blended up baby food version of Coldplay and U2 or something, and I already can’t remember any of the songs. (1.5 stars)
I enjoyed some moments but on the whole I found it incredibly boring.
im not impressed it feels like radiohead from aliexpress and smth like green day
1.42
Eh, wasn't feeling this album. I tried to get through it, but wasn't vibing with it.
Unfortunately, one of my least favorite albums I've listened to and didn't do much to entertain or expand my musical knowledge. I guess I know I don't like Doves now so that's a positive. Sounded like this CD was the jam of the author and figured they'd get bigger. Not that original and was boring compared to other options.
I’m not a fan.
Never heard of this band. I think I've heard of this second track. Sounds familiar or the guitar riff sounds familiar.
😭😭😭 TEMU Coldplay 😭😭😭 I've farted more interesting noises.
Another weird band. Not for me.
Terrible Coldplay imitation. Terrible immigration of a terrible band.
Coldplay-esque early aughts bullshit.
Very much Coldplay at home.
This one sucked, emo Coldplay-lite
That was a snooze fest and I detest Coldplay so…
Nothing I liked or can say is innovative
i hate you doves
First repeat artist! and it’s the most boring fucking band ever
noia noia noia
About the safest light rock I have heard since the last Coldplay, Peter Gabriel, or Phil Collins albums served up on this list. "I said words they mean nothing So you can't hurt me". Profound statement if you're 5 and just woke up from a nap. Would love to sit with the lists author(s) and ask what criteria was used when filler was needed. You could place the vocals from "There Goes the Fear" and place them into any Coldplay song. A blatant rip off of an equally boring band.
The Last Broadcast? Self fulfilling prophecy because that's the last time I ever listen to that.
Exactly 10 years before this album was released, the LA Riots happened.

Sometimes I wonder if artists would look at these reviews, like a ‘Rate myMD’ sort of self-flagellation exercise. If so, I think, is it nice to say something clever but scathing here? Probably not, so I’ll say nothing at all
Not my genre, not feeling it.
Drivel
Ugh, generic Coldplay like sound. I don't like Coldplay and I like cheap imitations of Coldplay even less
This just seems like boring, missable generic music to me. I'm keen to read more reviews because I don't understand what makes this noteworthy enough to include here.

more medium ass rock that has me asking once again, why do I need to hear this before I die? - copied from my last review. AAAAAAAAA WHEN WILL THESE STOP BEING ASSIGNED
Coldplay's success mind-screwed a generation of British rock musicians, creating a regrettable genre of music that "is compatible with shopping" (ty Yasiin Bey)
This is poor, even by the standards of the time.
I turned it off after 3 songs.
I think I got brain damage
Corporate. The exact point where U2's style became lame. Words is neat but the rest is unenjoyable.
Not my taste
Tepid. Pointless.
Would I listen to it again: no Do I like it: no
not bad. But I wouldn't call it a strong 1 either. It's very blah. But good quality.y
I listen to it all the way through and I don't remember a single moment of it.
This album didn't have a whole lot for me. I'd never heard of these guys. This came out while I was a senior in high school I think. I'd of not liked it back then.
horrible, son literalmente coldplay
No snap with this one.

Tehokas pehmopop häviää taistelun myöhäiskapitalistiselle tylsyyden ylistykselle.
A couple songs might make good background music. No songs are good foreground music.
"The Last Broadcast" I sure hope it is.
I ALREADY RATED THIS YOU IDIOTS
Shithouse. Basically coldplay
Also for the oddments pile. Even when contrasted with Hawkwind, which i sampled immediately before, not especially soothing, musical, entertaining or uplifting. Again, unpleasant and verging on noisy and mechanical then flicking over to ballads. Or whiney and deflating, like english weather. yes, thats it. heavy low clouds, rain, puddles and mud with a druggy tone that is more bathroom echoes that any kind fo pleasant tickling of the lower or upper ganglia.
From the first minute, I couldn't wait for this album to end. Vaguely patterned noise ("atmospheric," if we're very generous) with whiny, cliche emo lyrics. M62 Song was the only redeeming track because it sounded nothing like the rest. There's something to be said for a miserable-yet-uplifting tone, but that thought does not save this album.
Confused what this was...
dis some lame sunday service stuff
Really not for me at all did not enjoy, the music and lyrics just weren’t for me, not one I’ll be returning back too
Listens: 1 Enjoyed: n Just not great. It felt like everything bad about coldplay was intensified
1.5
too british?
It is indie music. Nothing was really memorable about the album. Some of the songs were to long and I wanted the album to end earlier than it did. I ended up skipping through some of the songs. It is better than some of the other albums that have received a one but I will round down.
boring, whiny, and uninspired. couldn't stand the lead singer's voice, didn't finish listening after the first few songs.
nope
Nothing of note here. The albums tracks carry’s on without creating any worthwhile moments that make you want to come back to. It’s just another example of lazy rock/pop music masquerading as something important...it’s really not. 1 Star!
Álbum passable, tirant a avorrit.
Just an all-around forgettable album. Mediocre singing. 3/10.
it's around/ a little bit better than RIO for me. still developing my rating skill.
