Just a bit slow
Reminded me to of coldplay but not in a good way
I knew one song, "Pounding", pretty decent song but it's also what I wanted to do with my head off the table in front of me for the rest of the album. 1001 albums and Doves win the lottery twice and end up with 2. 1.5/5. Raising to 2.
Powerfully mid AF.
zeitverschwendung
This is ok but doesn't really stand out amongst the load of generic British indie rock albums in this genre so not sure what made it on to this list. Two stars out of five. As another reviewer put it - janglewhine.
Sound like Coldplay. Decent?
Wasn’t a fan of a lot of the music. Felt like a time capsule from the early 200s rock that would be on a comedy drama tv show.
4/10 Top track: Let The Fear In I feel like it would require multiple listens to appreciate the songs better.
I get why Coldplay made it over them.
2nd Doves album from the generator and I'm wondering why they got a 2nd album when the other one wasn't great. Suffering listening to more bullshit British music when I could've been listening to an album from some non-English speaking country instead. I'm just wondering why multiple tracks on the album have less than 1 million streams but there are 3 separate tracks with over 10 million. Where do people know these tracks from wtf 2/5
I had no idea what to expect but the intro into the first song hit the spot. Atmospheric, nostalgic. Songs too long for what they're trying to do.
Bruh...how is this album essential??? No offence to this group, but this doesn't even sound particularly innovative for its time. Bland, inoffensive songs that sound like reheated U2/Coldplay leftovers. British exceptionalism playing a hand in its inclusion, I think.
The vibe they were going for was confusing / it was kinda post-rock-esque but also very poppy with its melodies, but the result was just…inoffensive for lack of a better word (thx pratik) Nothing really stood out - it wasn’t a bad album by any means but just not something I would come back to I wonder how many mid British indie bands are going to be on this list 😭
Didn't not like
very middle of the road - immensely OK but not great
Listened Before? N It's very obvious that the creator of this list is heavily into early-2000s indie rock. This must be the 30th album in the genre I've encountered here. This one sounds just like the rest. Nothing stands out here other than the ridiculous length of some of the songs. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: M62 Song
2.5 - it was fine
OK. 2/5
Gobshite Early 2000s soft rock, like Coldplay but bad
First few songs reminded me of christian rock. The rest maybe like a coldplay impression. A few interesting parts here and there, otherwise boring to me.
Inoffensive music for movies.
Another British act. Ahead of their time unfortunately that time is Imagine Dragons
Like why? It's fine but mid at best. I could name 1001 better albums off of my head!
A few good songs but pretty pedestrian
Mid. Has that Coldplay blah band sound to me. Not my vibe.
British Indie Rock bleibt halt British Rock. Es passt einfach noch weniger zusammen.
This should be in 1001 white male indie bands to bore you to death. Couple of rousing tracks that sounded inspiring when I was a depressed teenager and are embarrassed now. 2 for nostalgia only
Not for me. Dreary.
Yawn
Starts out interesting and halfway through delves into flat Coldplayesque Mercury Prize fodder…
Modestly successful brit rock. Again. I mean it's not bad but hardly must hear before I die.
Not terrible but also fairly unremarkable
How does this band have two (at least) albums on this list when so many other deserving albums aren't on the list? I don't hate this, and it's not unbearably awful, but it's not essential.
I kind of thought I'd recognize something on here but it was just moving between being Noldplay, Noasis and Nadiohead.
Yeah whatever
Bland and boring Walmart Coldplay. And Coldplay is already bland and boring so this was fun
Sounds kinda like British goo goo dolls. A little boring but could have been catchy 20+ years ago.
There are some interesting instrumental ideas and production touches on the margins of this British alt rock record; had those elements been foregrounded (and the generic U2-esque guitars pushed into the background), this would have made for a more intriguing album.
Whatever, like who cares?
I liked a couple of the songs and the rest was alright. I didn't find much on either of the Doves albums to make me want to listen again. Rating: 2.3
I really like the songs I recognise, but nice to know I haven’t been missing out on the rest for 23 years
The Last Broadcast has a grandiose feel to it but the songs don't really live up to the weight. It's a very slow and forgettable album that sort of just drags on.
This book should have been just 500 albums you must hear before you die.
It was all-righ to listen to, nothing special, some songs drag out too long, 2/5
Lige blevet færdig og har allerede glemt alle numrene, men de lød da fint mens jeg hørte dem
I really enjoyed the instrumentals at the beginning of this album, but the vocals are not for me and the album grew more and more bland/generic I wasn't gonna mention Coldplay, but reading other reviews - I'm not alone.. but I think I'd rather listen to Coldplay tbh
PLEASE CAN WE REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF BRITISH ROCK THAT I *DO NOT* NEED TO LISTEN TO BEFORE I DIE
Doves - The Last Broadcast Started off really strong but by the last track it got pretty boring. Reminded me a bit of a more psychedelic Radiohead at first but by the end it was pretty faceless indie rock. Clearly a talented band it all just got old fast.
Little cousin of Coldplay? Maybe a very distant relative. Production is sometimes a bit weird, as is the songwriting. I can't quite put my finger on it, but more often than not, the parts of a song don't really fit together. Then there are those lengthy intros, sometimes over a minute. This might be okay as background music, but nothing to really listen to.
Had not heard the album, better than expected
Un indie rock sin más
It was okay I guess, just a little too safe and I got the impression that I would tire of this music quickly. Very jangle-pop, a low three or a high two stars and I'm not feeling generous.
Absolutely nothing remarkable about this album. Just o.k.
Not very good Will I listen to again: 0%
Moody midpace inoffensive Neo-Psychodelia being dull.
Lots of people have recommended this to me over the years. I was expecting to like it more than I did. There Goes The Fear is an excellent track, unfortunately the rest of the album does nothing for me.
Sounds like Juice TV overnight…
Perfectly reasonable if relatively uninspiring middle of the road indie pop. Friday's Dust was pretty good.
I don't really like this singers voice, he sounds like a Chris Martin impersonator giving it the full 30% at a karaoke bar. There were some fun beats and rhythms throughout, the playing saves it from being really bad. A really uninspiring and boring sound to me though, perhaps because everything on 2000's radio was sounding like this at one point. The way the music swells up and blooms into solo's is pretty nice though.
The Last Broadcast by the Doves. How fitting. It is indeed about as appealing as the death rattle of a pigeon. Somewhat touching, but also rather repulsive. 2.5/5
Not terrible, but also not good. Heavily Coldplay influenced and generically new wave/alternative. Only interesting song for me was NY. Everything else is background at best and annoyingly reminiscent of Chris Martin at worst
I was scratching my head trying to figure out what this album reminded me of - then it struck me that the early tracks sounded a bit like The Verve, only not quite so catchy. I didn't really love this album, but it wasn't irritating in any way, so rather average and once again I wonder about the criteria for inclusion on this list.
Mid
Nothing here grabs me- it’s ok but won’t be relistening
felt like I was listening to the radio, didn't change the station but that doesn't mean i had fun listening
Three songs I recognised but genuinely thought they were by Elbow
2.2
British dudes just droning ad nauseam
First impression pre listen: I know I shouldn't judge a book by its cover, but this just looks boring. Reading the wikipedia article doesn't help and neither does reading the artist bio on spotify. It could still be good, but after 160+ albums I'm starting to recognize some reoccuring trends that a lot of the less interesting albums on this list have in common. Hoping to be suprised, and I will try to wash out the negativity from my mind before I head into it. Individual track notes: Intro Ambient and atmospheric. Denotes a serious tone for the album and brings feelings of coldness and distance. Unrated/5 Words Sounds a lot less bleak than expected. Boring verse structure. Unimpactful chorus. Repetitive instrumentation. Sounds a bit hollow and flat. The mix sounds a bit claustrophobic, like they're avoiding that any element stands out. Not outright unpleasant, just kinda long and uninteresting. Dislike. 2/5 There Goes The Fear Cute guitar riff. Cliche lyrics. There's a part of the bassline that sounds a lot like a guitar line in David Bowie's "Sound and Vision" but I can't find a credit for it. It fits the song, it just caught me off-guard. Decent chorus. Goes on for a bit too long. Boring vocals. Fine. 3/5 M65 Song Really like the "howling" in the intro. Great vocal effect, creates a rustic atmosphere. Could do without the backing vocals. Very soothing guitar. Wish there was a bit more to the lyrics. They're just kinda forgettable to be honest. Fine. 3/5 Where We're Calling From Interesting spacey sound. Feels like a cosmic awakening, or a storm of stardust. It's dreamy and ambient, really relaxing. Just wish it was much longer. Good. 4/5 N.Y. Kills the vibe established by the previous track. Loud and in your face opening which comes really suddenly. Boring lyrics. Has some really cool instrumental moments. Love the production on the guitar solo. The experimentation feels a bit aimless, not sure what effect they're trying to achieve. Fine. 3/5 Satellites Agressively average. Don't have much to say. The spiritual themes are mirrored kinda well by the backing vocals even if it's very tired way of doing it. Really predictable. 2.5/5 Friday's Dust I like the orchestral elements quite a bit. Would really like to hear a version without the annoying vocals on top of it. Goofy echo effects, genuinely sounds terrible. Had potential, but completely ruined by a single element. Dislike. 2/5 Pounding Don't like the mixing of the track. Boring chorus. Very standard 2000's alt rock track. Don't mind the energy of the guitars. Average. 2.5/5 Late Broadcast Goes by while barely registrering. Does nothing to keep my attention. Fades into the background and is completely forgettable. Dislike. 2/5 The Sulphur Man There are moments where the track finds its footing instrumentally, where it's really large and beautiful. However these moments are buried under heaps of unlikeable whiny vocals and long stretches where nothing interesting is happening. Dislike. 2/5 Caught By The River A song that exists. A perfect closer for an album that exists. Summarizes my experience with the band "Doves" - A band that exists... Average. 2.5/5 Final review: Frustrating, annoying, unlikeable. There's a lot of potential here to be something unique and interesting. The ideas are there, just execute them! Everything sounds half-assed. Like they had a million ideas, but no clue how to knit them together satisfyingly so they defaulted to the safest, most generic option. I think the biggest example of wasted potential on here is when they're handed some beautiful orchestral instrumental elements, and instead of doing something which compliments them they just keep on playing the same generic uninspired rock on top of it. The lyrics are blase and repetitive, delivered in a whiny underperformed vocal style which sounds uninterested and closed off. It feels like they're just fully committed to taking themselves too seriously to the point that it sounds ridiculous at times. There are moments where they flirt with letting themselves do something different, and that's when they manage to produce the finest stuff on this album. You'll hear the occasional deep soundscape, an interesting phrase or even some epic sounding production. And to its credit it's mostly not actively unpleasant either. Just pretentious, wasteful and at times extremely boring. 2/5
Clearly an add on to the original list. I wish the original 1001 would play first.
Pony
Competently created and executed but it just doesn't do anything for me personally. 2 stars to reflect that I just don't think that this belongs on a list of 1001 albums to hear before I die. I'm left the same as before I heard it.
Not bad, actually similar to Coldplay.
To quote Vivian from the Young ones “bored bored bored!!” Not sure who are more tiresome these or Coldplay. This is music for wimps performed by wimps!
Their second album. British Indie Rock. These guys are one of those bands The NME would drool over as being the next / current band of the moment., like Elbow too. They never quite got there though. This album for example, it's okay and many tracks have promise but end up flat and go on for maybe a minute or two too long. Then Coldplay went massive and ran off with the Doves football.
..
meh
I didn't care for this album. Post-britpop does seem like it tempers the britpop a bit, but this is just milquetoast. That being said, I liked it more than the other Doves album (a little) 2.49/5
There Goes the Fear Pounding
Upon getting into this....al b u m...zzzzzzzzzz
This is fine. It's just like the other albums from this time. They're fine too.
...meh
Not terrible.
#Rally Review - Day 4## Although better than the first wanky British indie slop. This is still slop. I was driving about 600kms across the Nullarbor on one of the longest straight roads on Earth and this was torture. Coldplay for indie virgins. Jamie: Wasn't as bad as the last one, but still pretty shocking.
I had to give myself a refresher on what Doves sounded like when I got this since I remembered the name but not their music, not off to a good start at that. Unfortunately I'd say this was another dull affair from a group that I think I would've been able to enjoy more if they focused their talents in a different genre. That first song from their other album Firesuite is still the only thing that really stands out to me. If this truly is the last broadcast for Doves on this ranking then I can't say I'll miss them when they're gone
I was enjoying this album a surprising amount up to about N.Y., after which each successive song seemed to get more and more grating and difficult to sit through. I don’t know whether this is because the B side of this album just stinks or if it’s because there’s only so much I can take of this type of music in one sitting, but by the end of it I was glad it was over.
Competently composed if not overproduced album that I felt absolutely nothing for. If this is your jam good for you but it genuinely feels like the "this is so sick bro" of indie rock, i can imagine the critic who wrote this talking about the instruments on this album like an early Gen Z high school stoner might talk about a bliss n eso album cover in the context of a conversation about "greatest albums covers" This album was influential atleast, it influenced the mass wave of shit overproduced indie rock albums in the late 00s and early 10s. Thanks fuckwits 👍 5/10
man i really love kingdom of rust but this one really reads like an imagine dragons record
This is so boring. I wouldn’t recommend listening to this at all, but especially not first thing in the morning before your coffee kicks in.
Typical indie music. Kinda boring bordering on annoying.
I thought this was a bit dull.
I stopped listening to this. It was interesting background noise while I was working but I can't say that I remember anything that I heard.
Like a poor coldplay imitation
One really good song, res are ok
Kinda boring idk
To the best of my knowledge I have never heard of this lot before, but they sounded very familiar. They had some interesting intros, but then there an abrupt stop and the track continued in a totally different style. On the whole not much of an album. 2
What if Coldplay didn’t have catchy hooks?
Nice enough laid back indie. Background music. Not for me.
Boring, just plain boring. It feels like I've heard everything before but I don't think I have.
Ikkje så fett
A dove in the hand is worth two in the bush. This Doves album at hand is worth two in the bush as well because I’d sooner fling it into said bush where I’ve already flung the 1st Doves album I had to listen to for this project. This one manages to be ever so slightly more of a drabby letdown. Doves at their best sound like a Shack version of Coldplay but on the first main song Words with their weird foggy emo secondary vocalist they manage to sound like a ridiculously more subpar Shack version of themselves. Back half of the record rings with a bit more quality and dull grey majesty. Pounding has a hint of a good tune and Caught By The River is quite a rich and atmospheric closer but unfortunately there isn’t a song that quite matches the level of Catch The Sun or The Cedar Room which makes this album an even more poor choice for this list than their debut. 2.5 stars.
i was pretty flabbergasted to see a second Doves album on the list; fortunately this one at least was deservedly ditched in a later edition
There were at least a couple songs on here I really liked, but there were more I really didn't. I kind of enjoyed the way they played with melodic patterns, but then the singer came in and was a very generic clone of all the other Indy singers of this era who wish they were Thom Yorke, and unfortunately he grates even more than most. It drags everything else down.
Bog standard indie rock.
Everyone's already made the Coldplay comparison, rightfully so. How do they hold up to other aviary themed bands? Eagles? One sided. Byrds?? Not a fair fight. Pigeon Detectives??? Close but still nah. Doves are the shittiest birds, confirmed here.
Some decent songs ruined by early 2000s sound recording and production. Is it possible to make a drumset sound worse? Thin, busy, annoying
It’s fine, I guess. Just very, very bland.
Diet Coldplay, and I don’t even like Coldplay.
Bland.
Pretty bad.
I tried to like this in 2002 since it was so hyped but I never fully understood the draw. It's average at best with one or two half decent songs but nothing classic, nothing cutting edge and zero hits. It's murky, overproduced, no breaks or pockets in the wall of sound, zero groove, boring vocals, again just vanilla stuff. "There Goes The Fear" has a respectable 29M listens but when have you ever heard this song on the radio since 2002? It's not all that memorable and has zero staying power. Nearly every song goes a minute longer than it should have for no apparent reason. "Bland" or "Boring" would be the words I'd use to describe this album. I was looking for a pillow after the 12th song! 2 stars cause you can't hate it but you sure can't love it.
I was bored
Yawns all round
This album was really dull at first, but then it really picked up at the end. Turns out it had already finished and Spotify was just playing me other stuff. So, yawn
It’s incredible how often this random number generator can sense I am facing a bad day and assign me to listen to the most mid British slop imaginable because NME sucked it off for six weeks straight 25 years ago. Two stars.
Meh 2.5
La cosa sorprende con M62 song y Where we´re calling from. Pounding tiene luz propia, y con el paso del tiempo no ha perdido brillo. Un disco muy agradable siempre.
Pounding and god I'm trying to remember the name of it. There Goes The Fear. You can tell they were the singles. Instantly forgettable. Sorry guys. Saw them a couple of times at festivals and failed to land there too. Don't know what the fuss was about. Not terrible by any means but don't know why I had to listen to this
Boring. Coldplay comparisons are pretty accurate.
There have some pretty instrumentation here and there, but always found them kinda boring. Had never listened to this album all the way through, but didn't do much for me
Interstingly enough, in the 2018 print ed of the bk, the doves record is Lost Souls. Revision, or error? This was pleasent enough but I don't understand why it is on the list.
I guess I have to just accept the fact that this list of 1001 albums is very "white dude from England"-centric. I think I've heard *of* Doves, but can't say I've ever heard anything they've done. This sounds like U2 if U2 had started during the BritPop era. It's OK. I feel like I'm getting in a rut here. This is becoming "1001 OK albums" for me.
painfully british
We could replace these guys with AI. I’m actually OK with it in this one case.
I'll keep it brief and honest: I can't remember much of anything off of this one though I certainly could've paid closer attention. I just kinda tuned out early on, then got brought back in the middle surprisingly enough, but still just felt very lackluster about the whole thing. At least it's better than Coldplay.
Very typical romantic comedy film music. Meh.
This felt bland and unoriginal. Wouldn't relisten
I can see where the Coldplay comparisons come from but in my opinion this is not nearly as good as anything Coldplay was releasing around the same time. I listened to this twice and I don't know its fine. Not particularly interesting in any way and certainly no Coldplay. Favorite track: There Goes the Fear 2.5/5
That wasn’t very interesting to be honest… it had some great moments but for the length of it it was not enough to keep me entertained.
I don't think I hated it, but I definitely did not enjoy it. The best thing I can say, is that I may reconsider my opinion on Achtung Baby, which I actively disliked.
This didn’t leave an impression
Omg, plateplateplateplateplate eeeeeeeeeeuuuurfg 🥱🥱🥱🥱😴😴😴😴😴
Reminds me of Coldplay, I hate coldplay
Meh
I saw a review that said 700 essential albums and 300 random Brit pop albums, and couldn’t agree more. This had a little more to like that The Verve but not by much.
At it's best, this album is perfectly cromulent. But let's be honest, it's so bland. It's like plain white bread. Bran flakes with no milk. Tepid tap water. You don't even need words to describe it. A single, large, languid yawn would do the trick. 2.5 rounded down.
A grandeur squandered With whining, sappy lyrics, And hookless blah vibes
mid
Nope never was a fan - they’re just not my cup of tea I’ll give it 2 because I appreciate the musicianship
no i dobrze, bo więcej bym nie chciał słuchać
2.0 - Weak
Coldplay in a different dress. I tried to like it, but it's a little dull, nothing really grabbed me. I stick to only really liking the one song of theirs "Catch The Sun", which isn't even on this album. I won't stoop as low as 1 star though, it's not that bad.
Did not enjoy.
This was just so mid.
This album has nothing to offer to me. The music is decent but there’s not emotions felt when I hear it. It falls into that realm of blandness where I’m 5 songs deep and I never really heard the first one end. There’s no jaw dropping song. There, I said it.
Good album. Probably wont listen again but overall relatively enjoyable. More of a 2.5 than either 2 or 3 but I'm going to go with a 2 because I will not remember any of what I heard or felt
So indifferent, that’s what this made me feel. It is just so vanilla, so white bread. Is this really must hear, why?? Is it inventive, no it wears it’s influence front and centre (wasn’t surprised when later read had been at Hacienda in the 80s)and does nothing to deviate. Is it the best example of a genre, is bland 2000 white bread rock a genre and if so unfortunately Coldplay are the poster boys. Engage musically? Stimulate lyrically? Critical acclaim at the time, of course it did, and it’s the sort of record that people who used to have a few cds as a “collection” and for the last 20 years you see in charity shops. I don’t dislike cause it’s another British band like some seem to have labelled on them, hell reading their wiki entry turns out they are near neighbours. It’s just meh to me and I can’t imagine anyone saying their are my favourite band, but again each to their own. Don’t dislike just don’t care.
It’s nice. Doesn’t give me anything I don’t already get from Coldplay, U2, Keane, etc. Starts to drag by the second half; this kind of music doesn’t really deserve 6-minute songs IMO. Not a must-listen.
Eh nothing special
I read one review that said "less good Coldplay" and I can't shake it.
Paint by numbers sound. Also depressing.
Only heard of "Doves" 10 years after this album was released and then the sound had kind of gotten a bit stale. I feel the same today, it felt a bit bland and uninspired. When this was all the rage it might have been new but now I'm just a bit tired of the sound. Sounds a bit like early Coldplay and many other bands. I'm guessing this was quite fresh when it was released. Strong 2. In another world maybe Doves would've been Coldplay.
Brit pop, not particularly bad. You’ve heard one, you’ve heard em all. Vocals are good in parts, production quality is decent, instrumentation is that of late stage Coldplay. I don’t like late stage Coldplay.
Ah ok, my initial impression was that this is music my sister would have been super into in high school and I would have tolerated while she was driving me around but not really enjoyed. Which was pretty accurate. Some of the songs did get more interesting/complex, "M62 Song" and "Friday's Dust" had a cool sound, and the instrumental tracks were solid. Overall though it's just fine, kind of bland indie-pop.
This is what Coldplay sound like to people who don't like them.
Not bad, just sort of boring. Another album that I don't think you need to hear before you die.
Solid album, nothing standing out too much on it. Got kind of bored in the second half of it as all the songs started to sound the same. Not sure why this is an album I must hear before I die, I think I would've been fine never hearing it before. *shrug* 2/5
We're to the Keane tier on Jeff Buckley worhsip, where the band doesn't even know who they're emulating anymore, and the music suffers for it.
Booooooooring. At first I thought it would just be another Oasis but thankfully the dude's voice wasn't as whiny so I guess that was something. Still didn't think they sounded very good, kinda outta tune and sad sounding which isn't very pleasant to listen to for almost an hour. Also too many of the songs are too long and just drag on and on and on. The comparisons to Coldplay are stupid, these guys have nothing on Parachutes or Rush of Blood to the Head, those albums blow this outta the water. Another stupid brit pop album that nobody cares about.
I'm a bit conflicted on this album. It kinda starts off kinda dull, with the shoegaze-y style vocals, then transitions to a more clear vocal mix with some good songs. And then it kinda ends a little boring.....
Alkoi hyvin, kolmea tähteä ajattelin. Jatkui paljon laimeampana, laski kahteen tähteen. Alussa parit passelit raidat.
This isn’t a bad album but really baffles me that there are two doves albums on this list, (only 1 arctic Monkeys and 1 strokes album) one Doves album would have been more than enough.
nothing here really could i write poetry to this? n
Not awful, but awfully derivative of many other contemporary British acts. Peter Gabriel, Coldplay, Muse, Radiohead, and so many more are are nicked by this outfit. I was unaware of Doves before this listening. Now that I've heard it, nothing has changed.
I could not get interested in this at all.
It was okay, didn't seem particularly exceptional
i dunno just kinda plain and boring and painfully average NNN
Neh
An early 2000s album - urgh. Anyway. I gave it the benefit of the doubt, and while is sure is an album from the early 2000s, with over-sentimental bits hiding underneath the soaring pomposity that infected music at the time, this album is considerably better than its contemporaries. I mean, I won't go as far as saying I liked it - it is an early 2000s album after all, but it definitely isn't as bad as the other filth that was pumped out around then.
Not bad, just boring. Could’ve died without listening to this album.
Not great not terrible. Not a 3.
Ok
WTF is it with Indie Rick groups that makes them all sound like a bunch of soy boys in pain, singing songs suitable only to inspire a person to inflict pain on themselves. That applies to the best of the Indies….and this is far from the best.
Another band who's blandness outweighs their merit. Confused as to how they got two albums on this lis
Wow, that was extremely underwhelming. If this is your favorite album, then I’m sure your favorite food is dry, unsalted crackers.
Didn’t enjoy this Doves album as much as Lost Souls. Every song had a very similar cadence, which made it hard for me to focus on the singing and lyrics. 2/5.
Turns out this WAS NOT the last broadcast. I checked.
Crap
Boring. Got thru half a listen.
Coldplay gibts schon - und die ein, zwei noisigeren Sachen reißen es nicht raus.
There is no world where this is an album I had to hear before I die. It's not bad, not really, but it is very plain despite its rich instrumentation, and every single song outstays its welcome by the end. Would rather have had Miss Dynamite, seeing as she beat this for the Mercury Prize.
Boring.
Pretty inoffensive but also forgettable tbh good back music
A lil to slow for me. Also singer kinda sounds like Bono
It's like Coldplay, but worse. Super dated. I had a tough time getting through this one.
Typical early 2000s mumble rock. A weirder Coldplay.
Terävin puraisu jäi uupumaan. Tai no en oikeen saanut otetta. 2/5
Ihan turha valinta listalle mutta kyllä tämän kuunteli suht mielellään. 2,5/5
David Grey meets Coldplay...
Holy shit, the lyrics for Words are essentially, ‘sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me’. Are you serious? Next song is pure Coldplay. This is where I check out.
If this was the last broadcast, I would shut it off. It took me 2 days to get through. Like Coldplay, but more lame. More obscure British horseshit to add to the pile. Favourite songs: Satellites, Words, Caught By The River Least favourite songs: There Goes My Fear, Friday's Dust 2/5
Ok, how many of these 90’s Britpop/Post-Britpop albums are gonna be on here? How many Oasis contemporaries/bands that sound a lot like Oasis? I get that the book this project is based on is edited by a Brit, but come on. The book is already skewed toward western, English-speaking music, at least make it so these 90’s British bands aren’t overrepresented. But hey, for all I know this’ll be the last one of this genre I get for the remaining 899 albums. Probably not, but possibly. I’m just saying that thus far, one specific genre has gotten more play than most others. Moving on. This was fine, if not a little generic feeling. Reminded me of Coldplay in some parts; makes sense since they were contemporaries. But I really wasn’t exactly inspired listening to this and don’t see much of a reason to return. 2.5 stars rounded down to 2 because I’m getting a little tired of this genre. Standout tracks: There Goes the Fear, N.Y., Pounding
Music for folks who think Snow Patrol goes just a little too hard.
unbelievably boring and absolutely not noteworthy. did this have literally any impact when it released i doubt it.
What was even the point of Britpop? It's all grey noise. The few seconds of Brazilian instrumentation between two songs was where it got interesting...until the band dove headfirst back into nondescript fuzz.
Likely my last broadcast of the last broadcast
Nothing interesting about this. Like a worse cold play. I do not need to listen again.
2000's brit pop.. Not bad but nothing exciting either, like boiled potatoes. 2.5 stars.
The lead singer's voice got more annoying to me as it went on.
Not very interesting. Sounds like every english rock band in the 90s. They werent bad but not great/amazing.
This did not need to be on the list. There’s nothing wrong with it, it’s fine, but that’s it, it’s just fine. This is inoffensive pop rock, there’s nothing particularly exceptional about it.
The quintessential 2-star album. Okay listen, probably won't again. I think the makers of this website must be huge Doves fans, a member of Doves, or a relative with Doves. I can't understand why this album is on this list.
I wonder if the lead singer’s name is Ian, because this sounds like a Christian rock album without the Christ. I sort of liked a few of the songs (the beginning of There Goes the Fear, M62 and NY), but overall I’m not very impressed. Wow, and then I actually know “Caught by the River”, but I have no idea from where. Another pretty good one, but can’t bump up the whole album.
I was excited looking at the wiki that this was an indie rock band from the 2000’s that I’d never heard of. But then I discovered there’s a reason I hadn’t heard of them.
Good background noise. Fairly boring and not memorable, but if it was playing at a bar I wouldn’t mind it. How many stars does being not off putting rate? Another one where I’m not quite sure why it’s on the list.
Me: Can we get Coldplay? Mom: No. We have Coldplay at home. Coldplay at home: Doves You know how in the song Wonderwall when they get to the part where they sing "and after aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaallllllllll", and you think to yourself that this is an unpleasant note to be held for this long? That happens a lot on this album.
Guitar riffs demonstrate skill. Less synth usage than their more recent stuff. A few clear winners, but a lot of filler. Missing the fullness of a band, the natural interplay that balances and enriches the songs.
Holy shit, the lyrics for Words are essentially, ‘sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me’. Are you serious? Next song is pure Coldplay. This is where I check out.
Not caught by this album. Seems pretty generic pop. Like Coldplay but then that popular.
This early aughts indie thing just doesn't work for me. It didn't then, and it still doesn't now. I have no specific problems with this record other than it's just boring. There's nothing exciting or different here. None of the songs had anything musically or lyrically for my ears to enjoy. It's all just thoughtful sad boi on his guitar schtick, and that whole thing has always felt so contrived to me.
The music by itself is quite enjoyable... intoxicating almost. The lyrics of many songs are also often interesting, but the combining of the two just seems completely out of sync with each other resulting in a boring and mundane listening experience.
Wanna be U2
The production on this is awful. The vocals are whinging blah. Britpop gave us many great things and some may say Doves is one of them. Sadly not me. I simply don’t get it. Average composition, dirge arrangements, and a mix that could only have been produced on a Commodore 64.
Meh. Stört nicht, wenn's im Hintergrund läuft, ist aber auch recht eintönig. Plätschert so vor sich hin. 2,5.
Nicht so meins
Rather tedious matter.
“Last Broadcast” picks up where “Lost Souls” left off, and not in a good way. Doves’ sophomore album mostly follows in the footsteps of the second half of their debut, which was a let down after it started strong. “Where We’re Calling From” was the most interesting thing on “Last Broadcast,” and it was too short and jarringly transitioned into the louder and blander “N.Y.” “Friday’s Dust” also diverges nicely from the arena Britrock boilerplate and harkens back to those first few tracks on “Lost Souls,” but on the whole Doves just don’t stand out above post-Britpop (definitely had to look that up) bands like Coldplay, Snow Patrol, Travis, and Keane. I thought I had heard Doves before back when we had “Lost Souls,” but it wasn’t from that. Wasn’t from “Last Broadcast” either. Turns out it was “Black and White Town” from 2005’s “Some Cities.” And that song is good. Catchy. Worthy of radio spins. But worthy of the 1001? Not really, and neither is “Last Broadcast” or the back half of “Lost Souls.” I think this might be the fifth album this month that made me wish Bloc Party’s “Silent Alarm” was on the list instead. So I’m finally gonna go listen to that now.
Meh…
Generic sounding indie album. A lot of the songs were very boring to me. I really like M62 song, other than that it seemed to drag on.
It was okay. Very trippy music.
This felt like a rock album that was going to go mauve.
It's fine I guess though if I'm going to shit on Coldplay I feel like I need to shit on this too. NY was ok but otherwise it's rather bland and pedestrian to me.
Borde kanske gilla det här men det gör jag inte.
I just listened to it and can't even really remember it
Tack gud! Om detta är den sista kommer jag iallafall slippa höra denna igen.
Inconsistent. I liked some tracks but found others really lame. The style varied from light pop rock to experimental. Not awful. High 2
Kinda Coldplay-esque
dont like this type of indie stuff
Eh
Very meh
Not in my edition of the book! 2002. 2 stars. Average millennial Britpop with no redeeming features. Played it once, can't remember any songs from it.
Second Doves album on this list. Guess this guy had a thing for em. Out of the gate, the instrumental is reminiscent of Oasis. Starting to believe that there are no good songs named "Words" (bottom 5 UM song imo). Flat song with both terrible lyrics and bad vocal delivery. Did not need ~6 minutes of this in my life. The band redeems themselves a bit with There Goes The Fear. The glockenspiel gives a quirky vibe, but this is a fine enough song. For some reason it feels like it would be a favorite of someone who's favorite movies are Juno and Napoleon Dynamite. M62 Song and Where We're Calling From drop into sparser, more spacey / astral tones that I enjoy much more. But that gives way to N.Y. which opens on a tear bearing much promise. It follows through on that promise by continuously evolving over its ~6 min runtime. By the end it is nearly tearing itself apart with a shitload of spacey echoes and fuzz. I remember liking the last Doves album we reviewed, but this one was generally a disappointment to me. There were some high points (M62 -> N.Y. and The Sulphur Man), but I found this to be kind of a generic slog with songs that often were uninteresting and far too long. Not much worth coming back for to me. Soft 2 / 5.
Starts out as pretty generic sounding alternative; a bit reminiscent of U2. The middle, starting with M62 Song, takes a turn down a street that I'd prefer not to be on as it becomes more like a soundscape album. I started this expecting it to be average at best after a song or two, and it kind of underperformed in my eyes. Nothing special, not terrible.
Lyder som hvis Chris Martin var gået indie-vejen i stedet
Sounds like blur or oasis but not as good as either of those
Never heard of this band ever, neat.
Some okay stuff here and there, but mostly Yawnsville.
Alku oli lupaava, koska tykkään There goes the fearista (500 days of summer toi minut sen tykö kuten varmasti monen muunkin), mutta loppu menee liian Coldplayksi. Eli pienestä kasvatetaan stadioninkokoista, vaikka pieni sopisi tyyliin paremmin. Tai ainakaan ei stadion. Olin antamassa kolmosta, mutta pettymys syö pisteen.
Like a more boring Coldplay.
listened, already forgot what it was like
I liked Words and There Goes The Fear. A bit folky, ethereal, dance beats. The rest was dreary and leaden.
completely meh. 2 stars.
Incredibly boring
Meh, quite bland
Meh! It's OK, but nothing really grabs my attention.
Yo I’m not even mad at this. Not my vibe but I still enjoyed it.
Just Ok. Kinda forgettable. Third time through the album and it still sounds like something I never heard before in my life. It’s not horrible, but did I really need to hear this? 2.5/5
2/5. I mean, it’s okay. It’s not bad just not memorable. Many songs just flow into each other and not in a good way. There some nice sounding songs but overall, mostly uninspired rock-pop.
Coldplay für ganz Schlichte, also noch schlichter als diejenigen, die sowieso schon Coldplay hören. Die Aufnahme dieser Platte in diese Liste ist, wie so oft, ein Ärgernis.
Couple of good songs but mostly bland
Meh
Really threw in everything here. Maybe too much. 2.5/5
2.5
Started quite promising, got quite boring
2/5
Possibly an album put here to include post 2000 releases? And it sounds like every other 'edgy' Indy band. In other words dull. Plodding. It’s like Elvis Costello but on mandrax. Worse actually, because Costello at least tried to hide his lack of originality. There are 1000 bands that sound like this, and you know, I can’t name one off hand? Maybe we should ban listening to the Smiths, The Cure and Joy Division by earnest young urbanites till they’ve heard more music. (All three bands are vastly superior to their acolytes). I’d rather listen to Coldplay outtakes than this Another thing to ban is critics who promote this stuff. No one thinks you’re cool or edgy. There’s plenty of great post 2000 music. This ain’t it. I’m struggling but 2 stars because its mediocrity prevents it being 1 star.
Strong start, weak finish
Highlights: "NY," "The Sulphur Man" Sounds remarkably like an edgier version of Coldplay's arena-rock turn seven months before they got there when it's not busy sounding like a laughable knockoff of Amnesiac or OK Computer. The studio tricks here are way overdone; you'll get five seconds of an instrument right in front of the mix and never hear it again, or 100% mix delay bludgeoning the actual song out of focus. Maybe it has a claim to being influential from back in 2002, but all of its pieces are just stepping stones to a sound that is ultimately anodyne and bland without those charismatic vocals to save it.
Ok, men inget som stannar eller gör något större intryck.
Boring
I listened to this one yesterday and didn’t take any notes and couldn’t remember a single thing about this album today. Kind of like Coldplay/ U2 stylistically. It was ok I guess but apparently didn’t make much of an impression on me. 2.5
Not terrible but pointless and boring
I felt like this was mixed super poorly.
It gave me christian rock vibes. Like Switchfoot but more boring. Wasn't for me.
At times this album works, but the vocals are very monotone and uninteresting. I also got vibes of Dave Matthews and Coldplay at times which are not my jam at all. As a background, it was sometimes fine.
Idk just sounds like cheesy 2000s indie that’s made tv shows. Nothing was bad about it all but nothing made me wanna throw it on repeat at all. 👍: m62, ny
Nondescript royalty free you tube background music comes directly to mind, music that elicits no emotion other than contempt for wasting my time.
Didn't really captivate.
4/10. This reminds me a bit of U2 or Travis, except I've actually kinda liked the albums we had by them. And this isn't one of those things where they aren't as good, but they did it first, nope, they did it last and worse. Oh, but wait, it was a *nominee* for the Mercury prize, so it must be secretly amazing?
One great song + a few ok songs + several that were two minutes too long = 2
Genre: Indie rock, post-Britpop, dream pop, neo-psychedelia First time for me. Heard of the band, don't know the album. Singles: -------------------------------- "There Goes the Fear" (#3, UK) "Pounding" (#21, UK) "Caught by the River" (#29, UK) Tracks that show up on best of the band lists: ------------------------------------------------------- Words, There Goes the Fear, Satellite, Caught by the River Best tracks: There Goes the Fear, Rating: 2.5
"M62" and "N.Y." were interesting and sounded less like Coldplay than other songs. But this was, overall, a pretty forgettable album.
Move over Travis, you are not the only purveyors of blandy noughties inoffensive indie music. The album starts and ends at the usual points with precisely three recognisable songs and suitable filler in between. Are the recognisable songs good? No. Is the album? No. Was it influential? Not in a positive way. Will I listen again? No.
Not really my kind of music. Sounds like generic pop. Enjoyed a couple of songs though.
Not really feeling this one, don't like the singers voice. 2/5
I once downloaded the Doves Greatest Hits and ended up deleting every except "Here Come The Fear". No tracks from this album were missed off the Greatest Hits. 2* for here comes the fear
Sounds like Coldplay but more boring, vocals sound overly nasally sometimes and the songs are long with no progression at all. Very bland. 3/10
Mostly dull, forgettable slow rock. I listened to this on a Friday and am reviewing it on a Monday, and can't recall much about it except I noted which track I liked the most, "N.Y." I remember liking the drums in it.
Not bad. Just not really appealing to me.
Sounds like Coldplay and I don't care for them much either.
Totaal generiek en willekeurig album van rond de eeuwwisseling. Deze hoeft er van mij echt niet tussen te zitten
Spectacularly dull listen, falls short of its lofty ambitions as a record by being so forgettable. This is my first interaction with Doves’ music, and I’m mystified as to their success. At its best, this record is advert music. It’s like an amalgamation of Coldplay and Elbow at the turn of the millennium resulted in the musical equivalent of the neutral people from Futurama. The result? “I have no strong feelings one way or the another”.
Soulless radio music. I will forget about this in a few days. 2
In relation to ‘Lost Souls’, this is the biggest letdown since Alaa Al-Aswany’s ‘The Yacoubian Building’ and ‘Chicago’. (Not bigger than, mind. Still convinced a shapeshifter was responsible for that travesty. This is not bad, just dull. And ‘Lost Souls’ is an amazing album.
Poundstretcher Coldplay attempts to be Spiritualized.
Pretty much the same as many other indie rock acts on the 1001 list. Didn't do anything for me and I will probably forgot about Doves.
Meh
Meh
Coldplay wannabes. Doesn't really belong on this list
Meh
Insipid and unoriginal. There is no reason for this to make this list.
The album cover and design made me think this was like a screen shot of the skyline on Twisted Metal 2. I thought this was a fake album. I even looked up the doves and this album wasn't listed. But once I found it, I confirmed it was real and really not worth being on this list. Like a watered down alternative band. Oh surprise surprise it's British indie rock.
Kinda just ehhh on this. A lot of it is very typical Brit pop with nothing that makes it standout whatsoever. A few different tracks that I found pretty cool m, but too fast and few between. 4/10
Occasionally does something special, but generally too safe to me memorable
i dont get this one. this is generic indie rock from turn of the century dudes. i guess this could have been notable when it came out in 2002, but now? it is nothing special. there are 100 indie rock bands doing much more joyous, energetic guitar drive indie. maybe this is supposed to be the opporsite? moody, down tempo? fine. so many bands are doing it better. did this somehow mark a turning point? give me bloc party, guvnah.
