Reviews (page 6 of 8)

I enjoyed this one! There were plenty of surprises. Even though it's a sound we all know, and has at this point been nailed down pretty much completely, I came away feeling like there was some definite joy in making this album and writing the songs. Open-ended structures, more exploratory sections and sound design. The parts that are meant to sound straight-ahead even do so with ease... it's doesn't feel too belabored, wrought, or (on the other hand) disinterested. I really liked it. Inversely proportional to how much I dislike the bands did this kind of thing, but with no feeling.

I think Doves are better known in Britain. I knew most of these songs and the singles were certainly played to death for a couple of years. I think it’s pretty wistful and easy to listen to and the fact that you can hear rain in a couple of the songs makes me laugh - because they are from Manchester. It always rains in Manchester. I love thé vibe on this and if I hear any of the singles on the radio or a playlist I’m singing along.

Okay album. Nothing standout.

Ok, but feels like another result of the bias towards England/UK artists.

Not bad, some good music in this one, not mind-blowing but good listening.

Some OK Radiohead worship here. N.Y. is my favorite track. Not a fan of the seemingly autotuned vocals.

Didn't grab me hugely but was pleasant - 3 stars

it was nice. Dreamy britpop.

This gave me an uneasy feeling while listening. Every song seems to be an anthem to an anxious, distressed melancholy, and of living a life that is yet incomplete. There's frequent mention of desires to escape, not letting life pass you by, waiting for something good to come, encouragement to move forward, etc. But far from being the motivational kickstart it says it wants to be, it instills in me just the feeling of resigned apathy- like, oh if only something would happen to get me unstuck from this spot I find myself. This is even reinforced musically. The lyrics are often delivered in slow, drawn out notes and barren of much motion in the melody- while completely engulfed in dreamy, optimistic, and grandiose instruments and sound effects behind. It feels like someone standing still in a crowded, bustling place, wishing they could be moving like everyone else; their own desires and expectations contributing to a paralysis they obsess on overcoming. It is very much an album for those in the young adult phase of their life. Aware of their ambitions but no clue yet how to actualize them. It's an album that tells a story of how hard it is to live as well as you think you should be able to. I hope that for whoever relates to this, they find some peace soon.

Lots of energy in these songs. The music is very upbeat and shimmers with loads of tremolo, reverb and echo. Vocals are strong. You hear some occasional bits of noise a la Sonic Youth or Wilco, and the echoes and layers are reminiscent of Radiohead. But the compositions seem more rooted in major keys. I’m a little less impressed with the lyrics. I’m just not clear about what sentiment or whatever the singer is trying to get across. Production value is very high. The layers are many but the sounds are so clear and distinct. I’m not sure I would keep playing this album, but I can see people liking it. For me, there’s no particular musical theme or single instrument that I find I follow and make a connection with, and the lyrics aren’t telling me a story I identify with, so it’s not really for me.

Very solemn, I feel like man needs a hug, still a nice listen though, especially for when you're feeling angsty and want to stare at rain on windows

Couldn’t help but feel it was miserably uplifting. Great album all round.

Really liked some Doves tracks especially back in college; but this album was more of a chore than I was expecting, especially the back half. Maybe a revisit

Slow dive and MBV are better

it's good but Lost Souls is much stronger

This was an enjoyable listen. I heard sections that sounded reminiscent of Radiohead and Elbow — turns out Doves and Elbow are both from Manchester and both formed within a year of one another, so I guess this was the Manchester sound in the late-'90s early 2000s. I also heard a track that made me think of Simon & Garfunkel, which could just be a product of having heard them recently. I listened to this more than once this weekend, neither was a particularly focused session, which may account for the 3-star, but I think its more that while I enjoyed it, nothing landed as particularly striking. I'll likely listen to more from the band, but it didn't rise to the level of immediate connection the way Elbow did when I first discovered them.

I never heard of Doves prior to this. I liked them but I did not give a deep listen. I had this album on in the kitchen on a rainy Sunday while making bread and it was a perfect vibe.

Familiar songs, very early noughties Brit rock vibes, feels like a long album to me tho

Decent listen, nice sound

a vibe

My prior knowledge of this band is that I’ve listened to bits of them before (mostly random tracks off the album before (lost souls)) hearing the intro paired with words I firmly believe this is a bit of a downgrade form catch the sun and the cedar room. The intro was a fairly generic instrumental and words sounds like a more electronic late career oasis song. Instrumentally the next track (there goes the fear) sounds like a children’s lullaby and having a 6 minute long song so early kinda breaks the pace for me. M62 song goes for that “indie sound” it’s really dull but I kinda like the way the track is sung I didn’t even notice the track after until it started playing (oh well). N.Y is cool but I think it should’ve came before all the slow ones still though it’s proof that doves still know what they’re doing. Satellites is way too long for what it is and feels quite generic but nothing horribly bad. Fridays dust is haunting with the echoey vocals not something I love but I must say it is enjoyable. Pounding is a great single can’t fault it. Similarly to M62 song last broadcast is a bit dull and sounds like it’s going for the “ indie sound”. The sulphur man sounds grand and evil… for a few seconds then becomes really vanilla really quickly. Caught by the river is a nice slow single to end the album. The reason why post britpop is nowhere near as good as britpop is because post britpop like this is so fucking vanilla!

Never heard of this band before. It was pleasant enough but nothing really stood out to me. Had a real Coldplay vibe.

kinda a hard one to rank interesting and uninteresting in the same song

Good but quite bland, the production sometimes lends a scratchy, lofi feel but other times it just sounds poor. A couple of the tunes were fantastic but several felt like padding. A decent record.

Siento cierta desconexión a nivel album quizás

I like it

A few good songs for a trip.

really like so far, less liking now actually lol, some features i like ie trippy instruments, reverby, mysterious tone of some of the songs, think i mostly just don’t like the vocals… kind of giving bastille or take that or smth 5/10

Some good stuff here actually, I'd give this a 3.5 if I could

One of the bands I feel I missed out on at time. Generic to be sure but pleasant with some interesting added touches.

Comments: My enjoyment started strong, went down, up again then lastly down. However I love how much early 2000s it sounds. First Listen?: Y Favourite Tracks: Words, Friday's Dust, Pounding Rating: Sine wave/5

Decent early 2000s indie rock album, no songs added to Playlist. May have to give it another listen.

A bit boring in places. Still sounds good, but whether it was mood or the album, was ready for it finish. Makes me want to listen to Interpol

Plusses - everything sounds BIG, there's some lovely orchestration, like a less irritating Coldplay, it's frequently charming. Minuses - every song is a bit too long for the content, sometimes the vocals are a bit meh Overall it's good.

Great to revisit this album. Couple of stand out tracks too.

Not horrible but not my fave type of music

"There Goes the Fear" has some cool rhythms that I did not expect, and "Friday's Dust" is surprisingly theatrical! Good, but not as good as Oasis, amirite?

I love the sample (from a movie or something?) on the first track that comes in around 4:00 minutes into the track. Very cool and surprising. The chords are also pretty unique- they remind me of "everybody wants to rule the world" and totally change the feel of the song at that point. Overall I liked it. Not a lot of standout stuff but I liked a lot of the production they had some tracks that differed enough to stay within one cohesive sound but still be dynamic. It's a 3/3 for me.

Sounds like a depressed Cold Play

It was okay. I hadn't heard anything on this album, and nothing was particularly memorable.

3.5/5. Forgot this band existed, first heard about them from 500 Days of Summer. Pretty solid.

Felt like an off brand Coldplay

A very moody alt rock album from the early 2000s, sounds like it could be used for a coming of age early 2000s movies where the character has a following out with their friends in the 3rd act right before they make up. Overall it’s meh

Not bad, didn’t go too shoe gazy or too alt, idk how I feel about this one

Okay, very similar to a lot of early 2000s indie rock

fun driving music

Very cool album that I'd never heard of. There's some straight rockers and some wild electronics here and there too. Fun album.

Very pleasant and competent but not very memorable. Not bad, not great. Conor - 2.5 Jane - 3 Bill - 2.5 Shannah - 3 (2.75/5)

Not a band album or band but they’re just alright. No huge bangers or anything. Sometimes get the vibe of Coldplay

I've heard "Caught by the River" before, though I didn't know the name of the song or band. I guess you could call this power pop - it was fine to listen to, but there wasn't much that stood out to me.

Nice guitar textures. A couple of good melody singles (fear, pounding) and occasional other songs (words). Overall a bit hum-drum. Not exactly necessary for 1001 albums list.

Pretty average album. Really liked the song NY. Not much else stood out.

Decent album. Too much electronics of the late 90s/early 2000s for my taste though.

Pounding is a great tune; otherwise a bit one-paced and samey for me.

Remind me of a lesser Stone Roses, not in a bad way just same kind of sound but updated for early 00s. Jimi Goodwins voice is less gravely than it is now, he sounds very young. I remember liking this bad and this album back in '02. Has aged somewhat well. Standout songs: 2. Words 9. Pounding 10. Last Broadcast Songs that hasn't aged well: 3. There goes the fear 11. The Sulphur Man

It's a pretty decent album. Well rounded except for the intro. Why do people do that?

There are high degrees of interest and variety throughout (e.g., chiming “Words, the highly distorted “N.Y,” dreamy and thoughtful “Sulphur Man”). Overall, it feels an update – and building on strengths of – classic Mancunian sounds. The sound (vocals in particular) start to wander, concerningly into Coldplay territory late on, without fully blossoming into full self-importance and pomposity. Straight-up likable and engaging and worthy of further listening.

Pleasant and entertaining but more background music to an evening with friends than a road trip soundtrack. Didn't dislike but didn't add.

Your run-off-the-mill alternative rock album. Nothing really sticks out. Hoped it would be better. It isn't. 2.5/5

Officially changing my rating scale. 3 is no long there worst I can give something. 3is for an album I enjoyed but may or may not come back to. This doves album wasn't right for the mood I was in yesterday but j think there might actually be a lot more depth to this than I can grasp in a single listen.

Mmmm. A bit like a sub-Coldplay to me.

Generally perfectly enjoyable but nothing I'd be excited to listen to again. 3.5

Fine background music

Decent

It was OK - good without making a big impression

A fine rock album. I actually had never heard of this band before listening to this album, I feel like I really hear a strong U2 influence. Not quite my style of rock but a good album nonetheless.

Without attempting to be too dismissive, it's kind of a dime-a-dozen indie rock band from the 00s. It's a little earlier, so it's possible it helped to inspire the wave, but all I'm really getting out of this is pleasant-enough U2 influence. Favorite tracks: "M62 Song", "Satelittes"

This album is ok but nothing in particular engaged me or caught my attention.I found it a bit under stimulating.

This was pretty solid. Some of it was pretty trademark indie that was indistinguishable from a lot of post-Britpop bands, but there were some lovely hooks every now and then, as well as some more distinctive darkness on songs like Friday's Dust

Music you would hear on Scrubs.

I liked this album okay, but it was moderately forgettable and equally enjoyable. Got a strong Coldplay deja Vu on some of the tracks. My favorite track was probably NY. But none of them really stood out for me. On the bright side I didn't hate any of the tracks either. Relaxing, calm, mid tempo. Don't really understand why this made the list of essential albums, though.

Fun, coldplay-esque

It was grand. Knew some tunes. Didn't care for others. 3 stars

I love this band and this is a good album, but there's just no reason for it to be included here when Lost Souls exists. There are far more deserving albums out there.

I had a great time with this one! Can't wait to get their first one

Good timestamp of its days, a bit long and that voice is too alike of that of Kiedis to be ignored lol

Nothing more than background music. Fine. Not bad.

1001 Albums Generator Day 12 In 2002, Doves didn’t exist yet. It was the year I turned 13 and I got music from daytime Radio 1, compilations and mixtapes my brother and I made for the frequent drives back to Cornwall to visit my grandma. We’d moved to Dorset a couple of years before, but none of us had wanted to go and my mum would drive us back at every opportunity. The compilations were increasingly dance ones rather than chart ones; Ministry of Sound and the like. The tapes were getting heavy on rap. To hear the songs we liked we'd started listening to Westwood; another man who called himself Big Dog and ought to have been taken to live on a nice farm in the country. My favourite new albums of the year were probably Lord Willin’ by Clipse and God’s Son by Nas. Eminem had released his first disappointing album, but we weren’t ready to admit it to ourselves yet. Jay-Z’s Blueprint 2 was also patchy, but as a double CD we’d had to split the cost to afford it and we were going to make the most of it. There was a lot of good pop on the radio, including Sugababes and Liberty X, and lots of great R&B, but I was getting a sense that there was some music I wasn’t supposed to like. When I started a new school in September, a girl asked me my favourite album and to fit in I said the first Linkin Park, which I’d been really into about a year before. It was a good call; hers was Sum 41’s All Killer No Filler. Occasionally I’d hear Last Nite by The Strokes and thought it was pretty good. I liked the bit about aliens and not being understood. Other than that, there was no rock revival. Seven Nation Army wouldn’t be out for another year, so the White Stripes didn’t exist either. Rock on the radio meant Oasis’ Little by Little or The Scientist by Coldplay, and I wasn’t interested. If I’d heard Doves at the time, I’d have thought they were another Coldplay without tunes. In fact, when I heard them on the BBC coverage of Reading in 2005, that’s exactly what I thought. Post X&Y, and the horror of Fix You, that was much more offensive to me than it had been circa Clocks. And at least one of them had a beard. That was enough to stop me getting into The Magic Numbers, and they actually had some songs I liked. There are a lot of rules when you’re a teenager. Other than that, they passed me by, except for the Kingdom of Rust press campaign, which annoyed me because it seemed specifically aimed at helping them “do an Elbow.” With hindsight, not everything has to speak to me about my life, and obviously that’s just good marketing sense. If I had heard Doves in 2002, I would have connected the Pounding beat with Coldplay’s Politik; but I wouldn’t have considered the ecstasy reference of their name or that both bands grew up in a post-rave culture dominated by four-on-the-floor Eurodance. Now, listening to Words, I hear the post-baggy chiming guitars and harmonies of Ride, delivered with a clarity and confidence that comes from experience. The descending right hand organ figure at the start of The Sulphur Man sounds like a disco violin part. I’m moved by the sorrowful, electronic gospel of Satellites. Hearing that and the almost William Orbit shimmer of the title track I’m pleased to hear a rock band keeping their ears open to recent pop, though a couple of years after Never Ever and Pure Shores I wonder if it already sounded a little dated. With their epic vagueness and Jimi Goodwin’s doleful voice, they do fit into that post-Radiohead, post U2 lighters-aloft movement, but perhaps not as neatly as I had presumed. Even so, I haven’t changed that much. My initial idea for this series was going to be a simple taste test: I would listen to each album and mark it according to whether it was better, worse or as good as Glorious: The Singles 97-07 by Natalie Imbruglia. Bad news, Doves.

Pretty cool album. Never heard of Doves before and I thought they were good. I was shocked to see they were from 2000. Felt like they have a more modern indie rock sound. Could listen to this album again. 7.1/10

Hard to rate, some songs hauntingly beautiful, some of the more upbeat indie songs I really enjoyed but other songs were dull…

Didn’t like M62 song. Liked Caught by the river, There goes the fear and words.

A bag mix

Dreamy indie pop - a nice choice for my first day of back to working from home in a while. The mood was a bit low for me, but the sound was still enjoyable. My top pick is the closing track 'Caught By The River', and I also enjoyed 'Words'.

Slow. It's like music I'd listen to on a rainy day, sitting by the window, sipping some hot chocolate, and staring at the world outside. None of the songs stands out, it has that feeling that you could just land on any of the tracks and get the same out of it. So, although there's nothing to dislike, there's also not much to like.

Moderately interesting, felt more like background rock music you'd hear at a bar to set an atmosphere but wouldn't really listen to.

Boring. Closer to a 2 than 3

meinlaust

Musically, this album is good, but it just didn't make much of an impression on me. Any time I tuned it, it was pleasant enough, but then I would just tune out again because it didn't hold my interest. It's another one of those cases where this list contains a recent British album that doesn't seem particularly ground-breaking or influential to me 3/5

Atmospheric, kind of gloomy but not melancholy. The ethereal elements are strong and combine well with the Indie snare drums in Words. Good- There goes the fear, Last Broadcast Bad- Art- It's a pixelated skyscape. The colouring, spacing and lowercase font emphasise the indieness but don't show how polished the whole album feels.

"A remixed version of "Words" entitled Live for City is played at the start of all Manchester City F.C." Wikipedia... is this true?

Very nice

Last Broadcast brilliantly balances a static chant with a hypnotic rhythm, country-ish guitar-picking and floating female vocals. However, these tracks have a bit too much melodrama, and sometimes they "only" have melodrama. (6/10) FT: There Goes The Fear

The sound of a fledgling Brit-rock band shooting for something between stadium fillers and charity appeal videos, chasing a giant sound and often hitting, sometimes missing. It's by no means a bad thing, but all the Coldplay comparisons do seem apt here, along with any number of 2000s British bands (Elbow? Athlete? Keane?). Doves in part embrace and in part dodge the maudlin trappings of the era, yielding mixed results. The lyrics are made everyday and generic enough to appeal to everyone who hears them: "words can never hurt me"; "seize the time 'cause it's now or never, baby"; "satellites ahead, so hold on." Many of these are pitched as colossal, earthshaking epiphanies, bombastic and huge. It's a fine line between empowering and cloying, and at times they just don't hit. "Words" made me cringe as an opener, and I don't think "Caught by the Fear" deserves all the exposure it's had: it's simply too long and doesn't have enough to say (except a really intriguing percussive outro). This leads me to the many positives on offer: Doves play around with style, form and dynamics to stop the treacle getting too thick. Some of the more subtle songs help to shake up the bombast: M62 is a very unexpected interpolation of King Crimson's "Moonchild" that's a fun diversion, and the title track has a beguiling mixture of simple, hypnotic arpeggios and electronic synth textures, with undertones of Radiohead. The extra orchestration is also welcome to prevent sliding into monotony: a hint of glockenspiel on "Words", a gospel choir in "Satellites", a full orchestra in "The Sulphur Man." They're all nice touches to add some texture to the song rather than just cavernous onslaughts of guitar, drums and vocals. And - let it be said - when I really put myself in the mood, ignored my prejudice and allowed the songs to carry me away like a balloon, I could feel them working their magic. I wanted to hate "Satellites" and "Pounding", but in all their simplicity I couldn't help feeling like I was transcending. Even more so in "Caught by the River", the best track of all. It works so well because it builds from a simple acoustic guitar strum-along, earning its cathartic release rather than expecting the listener to jump straight on board bursting into tears. It's a bit uneven- the tracks like "NY" and "Friday's Dust" lost me a bit among the rest of the material- but has so far rewarded me on repeated listens. Going with a 3* for now, but in time it may keep growing to fill the capacity its songs have aimed for.

This has a real early 2000s coldplay/wilco vibe to it. I don't entirely mean that as a diss, but it's not exactly a glowing compliment either. These bands of that era LOVE them some reverb.

I've heard There Goes the Fear in snippets, but the rest of the album was new to me as was the band. The upbeat tracks were fun and the slower ones oozed a Coldplay vibe. 3.5/5

What did I say about Grizzly Bear a few weeks back? Same applies here. It's fine. Vocals are nice, some good instrumentation in there. You can hear the progression from 90's shoegaze to this new, up-in-the-clouds rock/pop. There's enough guitar work and experimentation with that sound to be intriguing. I don't mind indie rock and this is an easy listen; you can easily get lost in it and wonder where the time went. But then nothing really seems to stick out. Enjoyable. Not sure how much more than that.

I gave this one two listens because I thought maybe it just didn't hit me the first time I heard it. Nope, just not for me. I enjoyed the King Crimson cover and N.Y. and Pounding but the rest of it sounds a bit monotonous and I can't get into the guys vocals. The mastering is also very loud but I know that's more a consequence of when it was released so I try not to hold it against the album. 2.5 rounded up to 3.

I listened but this one too didn't stick

Kinda a lesser Coldplay/Travis but still with some very catchy melodies. Another one where I'd return to singles but probably not the whole album Saved: Words, There Goes The Fear, N.Y.*, Pounding

2 bangers rest was ok

I certainly didn't dislike it but I can't do more than a 3 since I don't really remember it. Definitely on the list for a re-listen though since you said you enjoyed it so much Bob.

This is pretty interesting. Hadn't heard of this band or album before. Sounds a bit Coldplay-ish on some songs, but others are pretty cool. Will have to give it another listen. 3 stars.

A college headphone staple for AER. What's the most beautiful moment of OK Computer? Doves (and I) think its the final chorus of Let Down. This is an entire album of final choruses of Let Down. Is it overproduced, sure maybe depends. Triumphant arrangements, generalized lyrics that point to victory, but with a voice that sounds like they lost the war. It's all a bit much, but can still feel it on a general level. B+

Solid three star album. Had high school Josh known of this album, it might have found itself on regular rotation up there with Coldplay and SOAD

6,5/10 Legal

Words, There Goes the Fear (сука, эта дуделка в конце)), N.Y., Last Broadcast (соу-соу) Худшие: The Sulphur Man, Caught by the River

This album was interesting. It sounds very similar to what Coldplay was making at around the same time but was still heavier and more unique. I’d have to listen to it again to find favorite songs because I also enjoyed this one as more of a complete experience

Didn't love - sounds significant in an indie/shoegaze way but j didn't find it particularly compelling

Nice listening on a mellow day. I felt like the first track was a bit of a bait-and-switch given the singing on the rest of the album, but it still fit neatly into 3-star territory.

There Goes The Fear is incredible

liked it more than i thought i would

Really decent alt-rock record. I really enjoyed this.

This British indie rock album is the second one from the band - Doves. It was immediately popular at release, and for good reason because this beautiful, melancholy album was a treat to listen to. The music at one moment will be sad or miserable and in the next moment, you will be uplifted with a change in pace, instruments' pitch, and/or vocal tone.

ah, mooi album. vorig jaar had ik hun nieuw album in mijn lijst voor onze top 3 per maand. Het is genieten, maar zeker geen masterpiece. Caught by the river neem ik mee

3,6 Toffe productie.

This was ok, no standout tracks for me but decent over all.

I liked some of the heavier stuff, like Pounding, on this. The dreamier stuff, like Last Broadcast, wasn't working for me.

Half way through the intro I was thinkin’ (hopin?) this was some Trance DJ I had overlooked. I was not taken by There Goes the Fear/Pounding as the album’s big hits. M62 caught my attention – I read it was an adaptation of Moonchild from King Crimson’s first album. I re-listened to the original and I was impressed by how similar the feel and vocal effects were, but the melody was different, and of course there isn’t 9 minutes of piano plucking in this one. I like the way the songs change mood, especially when they get quite and sparse – it sounds less like a typical indie band.

Coldplay without being annoying and cloying. Doves are a good indie Brit band with some pretty decent songs, particularly There goes the fear. This is a strong 2.5 but I'll round it up because its a nice day again.

Not in 2018 version of the 1001 Albums book, but listened anyway. Seems like quintessential early 2000's indie rock. Dreamy songs and basic guitars and drums. Easy to listen to, but likely won't spin this album again.

Some recognisable tracks here. Surprised how old the album is. Trying to stay to one a day and had to listen to this in part. Will come back to it again

hit and miss

Decent bit of Brit-pop

Interesting Indie Rock. Never heard of them. Ok.

3.5 pretty good album. The vocals aren't too great, and it's trying really hard to be a Radiohead album, but otherwise very good.

Decent early 2000s "indie" rock sounding album.

i liked it more as it went on, it was lowkey repetitive but in a good way so i overall liked the sound

Strong 3. May have to listen to again.

Solid listen and better the second time around. Strong Coldplay vibes. Pounding was the highlight followed by there goes the fear and last broadcast.

At first this struck me as your typical boring Britpop but on my second listen under headphones this album began to click. I do wish the tracks were a little shorter but overall this was an enjoyable listen by a band I’d never heard of.

Some great songs, particularly in the first half, alongside a lot of bland, Coldplay-ish padding. A shame really, there was some real promise here. That this is apparently among the best UK rock albums of the early 2000s just reinforces my opinion that this wasn't a great period for it.

A little more energetic and spirited than Fleet Foxes. Still some Subaru commercial moments but overall above average. No need to listen to again, though.

I suspect it’s a bit of a ‘grower’ and probably worth another listen, so 3 stars just in case. I added it to my list for this reason only. Nothing remarkable in the recording production though, sounded a bit flat, if that matters to you.

It was alright, not super special though. Sounded a bit like Coldplay.

Hadn't ever listened to Doves before. Nice sound, and the music isn't boring, but I guess it doesn't catch me. Pleasant enough though.

decent rock album from the era, not sure I will listen again

10th June 2021 Listened first thing in the morning on my phone getting ready for my second round interview with the FT. Doves are a strange one because I was aware of them when I should have been their prime audience but never really got into them. Caught By The River was a big song and appeared on a bunch of compilations, and they were on the OC soundtrack which was huge. One to spend more time with. 3.5 if I could.

Good enough but didn't finish

Decent.

"The Dove from Above" is a large prop animal suspended above the contestants on Shooting Stars merely for the purpose of bearing six key words for further questions. Guests would be prompted to "coo" down the dove. "Coo. Coo. Coo." Noteable cooers are Johnny Vegas and Take That's Mark Owen.

Yeah, good.

Lot of filler for me

Some good tracks.

i started out pretty interested in this, thinking hey, here's something i've completely missed! i ended up pretty uninterested, thinking hmm, this feels more & more like coldplay...

Ach. I suppose it’s fine. A lot of build up without any break.

It's alright. I love Kingdom of Rust. I feel like this band would be really great live.

Average. Not really noticeable in any way

This was fine. It was great for background listening during a busy day, but it's not something I'd listen to normally.

Only a view songs I liked. If you are in the mood for this kind of music then it alright.

Really like this album. Decent alt/indie rock.

Interesting melodic ideas here, I just wish they had mixed things up as each song rehashes the same themes over and over rather than going anywhere new or different.

The fact that this is 2002 tells me they were ahead of their time. A lot of indie artists today are copycats of this type of sound.

good indie rock

British indie, pretty good

Generic.

Pop rock indie

Liked a song, a little out there, but good work listening

Not really my style, but it grew on me towards the end. Also loved M62 song, thought I accidently played some King Crimson

Solid. That's it. I liked it. Maybe will revisit someday.

After listening to the first track, I really wanted to like this. And, listening further, I did, just not as much as I would have liked. After staring at the band name for a couple minutes, I seemed to remember a release by them from last year. I was sure I hadn't listened to it, that there was some kind of news coverage that I had bookmarked to read as I got to it. It turns out that that was not the case: I listened to the 2020 album in 2020, and I guess it was pleasant but not particularly memorable. This sophomore effort seems better for now, though in a year I suppose I'll be better-equipped to compare it. It's chock-full of good songs and a few hints at something more. One listen in, I think the mix lets down the music a bit. My rating is a tad harsh based on my disappointment.

Good. A little longer than needed. 6.5/10

obviously inspired by britpop kinda stuff, kinda like the strokes etc but with softer songs, not just upbeat rock tunes. Drags on a bit too much for me but the good parts are fun 3/5.

I'm struggling to see what all the fuss is about with Doves. They sound like a boilerplate stadium indie rock band who could not hold a candle to the likes of Elbow or Coldplay. There is nothing offensive here but also nothing better than "fine".

I bought this album back in the day. I'd forgotten it was in my collection. And after a couple of tracks I understood why. Coldplay-esque in its blandness and astonishing it was Mercury-nominated. An anonymous 2*

This was alright. Kind of generic dream pop

It's not that this was bad or anything, but it didn't do anything new or fresh that would warrant its inclusion on a list like this. Must have been huge in the UK or something.

This album was ok. Not great, not terrible, but also not sure why I had to listen to it before I die either. After 24 hours, no part of it is really sticking with me.

Solid but wasn’t super moved

Some interesting guitar playing in some songs and catchy rhythms. But the slow almost whiney singing that a lot of songs had wasn't for me at all. I think I would have liked this more as an instrumental album.

Very British. Some parts are good but a lot of it gets bland very quickly... very British

When your mum says you've got Coldplay at home.

There goes the fear, number 3 debut on the charts? Sounds like U2 with a less annoying voice than Bozo. Satellites chords match Sounds of Silence so nice to think of S&G as a distraction from a maudlin drivel infused wreck of an album this is. It could have worked with a different vocalist? Something more robust, less whiny nasally. The tunes and band around them are OK. Solid 2. It's an indie band album like most others, nothing of note, nothing to inspire or offend, simply there to be there and soon forgotten.

repetitiv bakgrundsmusik i en dålig film

Drastic change from the intro into what the album became, definitely music that can be played in the background of most activities but I'm not connecting to anything enough for a impression to be made, suffers from being to safe.

Cold Head. Radio Play. Cold Radio. Play Cold. 4/10

Pretty chill rock, but nothing really interesting.

Sounds like Coldplay

I like Doves but this album feels so mediocre (even for 2002). A few—maybe two—bangers, but a place on this list is not justified.

It hit me pretty early into the album that this sounded like Coldplay (as many others have already mentioned). On the Coldplay-Radiohead spectrum it's somewhere in the middle, closer to Radiohead and definitely better than Coldplay IMO. Everything on Coldplay albums feels blended together while this album the instrumentation and style feels a bit more varied- which I like. I loved the King Crimson Moonchild reference on M62 Song, nice little interlude. Man when it was bad on this thing I really wanted to blow my head off though. Boring ass drum patterns and chord progressions on Satellites and Pounding was my least favorite on this thing. All the sappy sentimental stuff I hate on Coldplay is present on these. I was thinking this would be in 3 star land but man-- there are moments in the middle where I wish I were listening to Coldplay instead-- and that's NOT a good thing. I enjoyed my time for the most part but I won't be back.

it was okay, although most of the songs sort of sounded the same to me. also i was getting coldplay vibes which turned me off slightly….

Kind of like Radiohead and kind of like Cold Play. Soft, high treble and whiney. Not as good as Radiohead though.

That NY song is great the rest was pretty unremarkable

Meh, seemed like standard early 2000s alternative to me

Middle of the road snooze rock

Unfortunately there's nothing here. Not that the album is bad, it's just all been done before, with much more substance. This album sounds like a very well polished AI generated album based off everything that post Britpop gave us, and even some elements of Britpop. Nothing new. For some reason, maybe because of the lack of creativity instrumentally, the whining voice is much more grating. It works for Radiohead, but not here. it was good background music for my workday tho arpeggios on Words are beautiful. Then, when the song sounds like it's going to get interesting, it just goes right back to it. Again, this song is good but not unique

If you’ve heard even one of Coldplay’s biggest hits, you’ve heard everything this album has to offer

Boring and unpleasant in equal measure. Production did nothing for me, felt like a corporation's attempt at recreating Sigur Ros' Agaetis Byrjun. The "Moonchild" interpolation was weird and unneccessary. The supposed "big" singles were snoozers

Not for me. Not the worst.

I was optimisitic after the first song sounded decent, but I did not enjoy the rest of the album. There was almost too much production.

Coldplay-esque, in the worst of ways

I could have this playing in the background and I would be fine, not sure that I would ever choose to listen 2.5 stars

I'll give it credit in that I had no idea what the next song was going to sound like at all

No thanks.

Similar to some other albums, I would have preferred that they were an instrumental band. The songs would start with some strong ambient soundscapes, but the singing ruined it for me.

Nearly a 3 but just not my thing

The music was much more interesting than the lyrics and vocals. I can see middle school me being really into this for some reason.

It’s decent/whatever but not the best. 2 stars

I found this to be really dull :/ idk if it's just how i'm feeling at the moment, but I just couldn't wait for this to be done. Just dirge pop rock I'm sorry. It was just one notch down from fine for me.

No los conocía. No me gustó.

It’s the musical equivalent of a soft, half erection. It’s as satisfying and useful as one too. Just disappointment on what is on it’s way to being great, but just never gets there.

The crooning vocals absolutely shattered any chance I had at enjoying this Just feels like chewing on sawdust and occasionally gravel, very nothing-y. Instrumentation is at least occasionally not boring Not actively awful, but that's the biggest compliment it's getting

This one is kind of another ham sandwich album. It's okay but nothing really stands out to me.

I listened to it twice, and both times I was like, I should really like this. It has all the elements of songs I usually like…. But I just don’t. 1.8

This is like a slightly better version of the Coldplay album I got a week ago. It was a tad livelier and had more interesting arrangements. That said, it was still a rather bland indie rock album. To be fair, there were some pretty good songs on here. But too often they suffered from whatever it is that makes these albums have overlong, droning songs that could be 30% shorter and still be just as good, if not better. That is true of this album too. 54 minutes is way too long for what is on it. Going to say this was fine. I didn't get a lot from it even though some parts were enjoyable. Overall: 2.4/5

didn't love this. good background music but nothing stood out to me

591/1001 2026.04.13

Dull, uninspiring.

🎧Bland and forgettable AF. Not sure I understand all the Coldplay comparisons. Sounds a bit more like Keane to me. In any case, Doves are worse than both those bands.

Bit meh rly

This didn't really make an impression on me.

Didn’t quite enjoy this a much as Lost Souls. It’s a bit dull but may need to Listen to more

My next to last album on 1001, and of course it's a damn mediocre Britpop album. I will say, for Britpop, this has some interesting, somewhat haunting instrumentation that leans kind of emo, but really, it was just kind of boring to listen to. Along the lines of interesting instrumentation, perhaps the most interesting was the symphonic orchestration on "Friday's Dust". There are some similar symphonic sounds elsewhere on the album, but it's most prevalent on that song. That said, I wish I had more to say about this album, but it just didn't land with me.

Is this not Coldplay? It's not objectionable, but not great either. Have to give it a 2.

Reminded me of Coldplay. Before you get excited, that's not a compliment.

Pretty basic late indie Britpop-rock that I initially enjoyed but which soon bored me. Other reviewers' comparisons to Coldplay are accurate. Another album for this "Why is this on the list?" pile.

Unsure why I needed to listen to that before I die

Kind of average rock stuff...

I remember writing Doves off at the time this was out, thinking they were another boring Britpop band. This is a bit better than that, but not by much.

Like a lot of albums on this list, it’s inoffensive, but largely bland. There Goes the Fear and Pounding are probably the best tracks.

Not for me. 2.5 stars.

This album was incredibly boring, the songs were so boring and sounded like the same thing over and over again and didn't really have any good musicality

Zone out a fair bit. Music is a bit monotone for me

The last broadcast was fairly dull. Sounds like something I would hear on the radio and not really think about again.

didn't really grab me. kind of stumbles toeing the line between sleepy and contemplative. all the energy of a medical drama midseason finale, has like 5 distinct songs that play like almost-impactful too-long meandering outros and none of them are the outro. creed without the crunch. maybe i just wasnt in the mood for this kinda music? N.Y. had some magic to it, and i liked Pounding

The music was okay but, vocals sucked.

Not a single song stood out to me. The only thing I noticed was the proliferate amount of xylophone and chimes.

Not bad but not interesting. Kind of forgettable.

picks: there goes the fear, pounding

Pretty unmemorable - a discount Coldplay

This is the audio version of beige.

I've learned two things as a result of this album First, the popularity of bands like Oasis, Coldplay, and Blur in the UK makes sense when you hear the alternatives. Comparatively, they are far better than their contemporaries. And more importantly I learned about the Mercury Prize. A Prize awarded to the best album by a band from the UK or Ireland. We've often wondered how some albums made this list, well the mercury prize holds an answer. The Last Broadcast was a finalist for the prize, scrolling through past winners and finalists there were more than a few familiar names. Anyway, I didn't like this album.

Highlights: There Goes the Fear, N.Y. Lowlights: M62 Song, Friday's Dust Felt really self-wanky. Most songs just melted into each other, and I could hardly tell when it was changing.

I don’t really get the appeal

whiney as hell. home cooking again, etc.

I’m BORED. Bland instrumentals definitely Coldplay inspired. Not completely unlistenable and not as bad as some of the reviews make it out to be, but it sounds like music made to be played in the background and i lost interest half way through the album. On the positive side I really liked the intro track “Words”, the melody was interesting, and also the closing track “Caught By The River” had somewhat interesting lyrics, also the album cover is cool. The songs drag on for a bit too long for what their lengths are smh this could’ve been an email.

Lowkey brooding.

This is a pretty meh album, nothing really too exciting and it's not even that old, but to be honest, it's alright for leaving in the background.

Bestes Lied: Last broadcast

Didn’t had the “thing” for this album

boring

i've seen a lot of reviews prior to listening to the album that it sounds a bit like coldplay and i have to agree. the album wasn't bad, it just felt a bit monotonous to me despite liking the production of some songs. my overall fav was definitely "n.y.". from what i saw in terms of lyrics, the themes mentioned in the songs are cohesive across the whole album and in my opinuon are of a good quality.

Not bad just boring.

I mean, it's fine, in the way that early 2000s alt-rock was fine. I generally do prefer alt to mainstream, so I didn't hate this, but I don't really get what the critics were channeling by implying we have to hear this before we die. 5/10, rounded down because I don't take this list as seriously as I did when I started.

There's something in this world for everyone. This was not for me.

I gave this 2 spins, but it sounded a lot like the 1980s Guitar bands, a couple of songs were ok, but nothing special for me

There Goes the Fear M62 Song The Sulpher Man

Nothing too inspiring here for me as it oscillates between Coldplay-like tunes and praise music at times.

One of THEE 1001, huh? Nah.

Early 00s indie rock album, not too bad but really not a memorable or inspirational album.

If you put every mellow British indie rock band in a blender, this is what you'd get.

Another fine but uninteresting album. It sounded like any number of albums of the time. I would not seek it out.

Day 149 Started well but I was seriously losing interest by about half way through 5/10 Highlights Words There goes the fear

(39/100)

Is this trying to be Coldplay? It is, right?

This is the type of music that makes me reflect on the fact that AI is just doing what the music industry has been doing for a long time now. Maybe its inevitable, like a computer beating a chess grandmaster, then eventually a go champion. It had one or two nice moments.

Snoresville. They take no chances, everytime you think they're going to let go and do something, the song ends. 2/5

I really didn’t connect with this album

Quiet, lethargic and I don’t like the lead singer’s voice.

Not for me, fine, was surprised a couple of songs I thought were other people’s were theirs.
