Grunge, der vocalist carriet die Band und das Album. Black Hole Sun als der Hit des Albums sticht so besonders heraus dass es mich nervt dass der Rest so belanglos ist

Bästa låt: Spoonman Grunge Låte för grötigt, men någon bra låt.

Easy listening rock. With vocals to match.

This goes on a bit

too rowdy for me

Very grungey, wasn't in the mood so only listened to one song lol

Very nothing kind of album l.

2/15, 13%

Har väl gjort några klämmiga bitar, men det här var mest bara trist.

Se vuelve reiterativo. Siento que me hubiera gustado más en la adolescencia.

Very wall of sound feeling

Pelkäsin Black Hole Sunin videota lapsena niin paljon, etten pysty arvioimaan tätä levyä objektiivisesti. Tästä puuttuu joku muulle grungelle tyypillinen välittömyys, onkohan tää edes grungea vielä, selkeästi raskaampaa. Ei mulle, mutta varmasti jollekulle.

Onkohan kaikilla se astetta äijempi setä, jonka hansikaslokerosta tää löytyy.

Heavy and nothing exciting

Really didn’t engage with this

C- Let Me Drown - 2 My Wave - 2, sounds like knock-off Nirvana Fell On Black Days - 2, snoozefest Mailman - 2 Superunknown - 2 Head Down - 4 Black Hole Sun - 3 Spoonman - 2 Limo Wreck - 2 The Day I Tried to Live - 2 Kickstand - 1 Fresh Tendrils - 1 4th of July - 2 Half - 1 Like Suicide - 2 This mostly sounded like a worse version of Nirvana. However, Head Down and Black Hole Sun were awesome. I'm so glad I heard them. I didn't expect to like this at all, so coming away with not one, but two really good tracks in a major win in my book.

i can appreciate how layered it is but i just couldnt find it that interesting. sounds like something that would play at the salty spitoon

This is just not my cup of tea at all. I can’t even put my finger on why. Disappointed that I’m empty of any kind of feeling toward this.

p733. 1994. 1.5 stars. Tedious Nirvana clones, but without the songs or the talent. Adequately done, but redundant and with no memorable songs, and far too long. WTF is this doing on the list?

Did not enjoy, radio rock

average rock band

no hate, i just think it wasn’t really my jam. certain songs did get me really entranced, but other ones just... kinda were there? like the band obviously has amazing chops and a great sense of theory, but there wasn’t much variety from song to song and the length alone made the album drag pretty quickly. idk maybe i just needed to be in a different mood :(

nah not my thing

Not horrible but I dk

Just massively boring and unremarkable

Didn't grab me at all. Supposed to be influential in grunge which isn't a genre that appeals to me.

Not bad, close to metal, nothing special

Soundgarden never clicked for me. This entire album sounds like generic hard rock and every song (except for "Black Hole Sun") follows basically the same formula. I've had one album from each one of the Big 4 of Grunge, and this was almost definitely my least favorite. "Black Hole Sun" is awesome though.

Pretty cool, really enjoyed the wave, which has an early foo fighters sound to it. Not huge on grunge but did well to compete with Nirvana

Pretty ok, but a bit boring for me

Ongeïnspireerd

Generic, sorry. Our first from Soundgarden (I think), and it doesn't sound distinct from the many other grunge/rock type albums we've had. I know they're a big-ish deal, but this just wafted over me like an odorless fart. Two songs I picked out that I liked, but I'd never seek them out. Tepid start to the week. Favorite tracks: Mailman, Fresh Tendrils. Album art: Pretty cool, looks like a goblin boy screaming into the void? I don't know. I like the design here. 2.5/5

Je vais être très franc: je n'ai pas aimé

ça m’a donné envie que le grunge soit plus haut dans mes genres les moins likés

Not offensive but also just… not for me.

Grunge/metal, udmærket

Well-performed music that does nothing for me.

Somehow less than the sum of its parts. Not memorable to me.

Superunknown is just ok…not much dynamic range in either pitch or volume throughout.

Too rough

kuuluu bändeihin, joista mun pitäis teoriassa tykätä, mut käytännössä puuduttaa. tavallaan lohdullisen tuttu soundi, jota voi pitää äänimattona taustalla, mutta ei herätä oikein muita tunteita kuin väsymyksen

Liian teknistä ja raskasta, liikaa "hyviä muusikoita". Ymmärtävät tosin jonkin verran melodioiden päälle.

Way way too long. It’s obvious why black hole sun is their most popular song

There are strong examples of great songwriting and entrancing melodies on this LP (Black Hole, Spoonman, Head Down), but they're weighed down by either running for far too long or are in general drowned out by the sub-60 BPM chugfests surrounding them. I'm all for some proto-djent sludgy guitar lines, but filling over an hour of runtime with slow-burn grunge and ONLY slow-burn grunge is a recipe for boredom.

Tråkigt!

The genre of American heavy-light-rock is one I struggle with. doesn't have the grunge of Navara, nor the dynamism of REM, nor the pure belters of RATM. Found this quite middle of the road - does get going for 'Superunknown', and 'Spoonman' builds well - rest of it is a little insipid, without being otherwise interesting.

I found myself craving melody and any sound other than loud guitars. Black Hole Sun is a classic and Head Down was a surprise find. The band said they wanted to be a bit more Ringo on this album (the drumming was awesome) but think they should have tried to be a bit more Paul.

Sounds good but not my thing. And why are all the songs 4-5 minutes long?

Did not liek

Listened to the album while working. After Black Hole Sun, I tuned out and don't remember much of the rest of the album. All the songs sounded very similar.

Steady, sing-to-the-mic 90s rock. I kinda enjoyed it, but it didn't really touch me.

I hadn't listened to this record in its entirety since the obligatory grunge-fanatic period as an angsty teen. I found it to be a surprisingly tedious listen, the album bloated and most tracks way too polished for my taste. There are obviously some legendary tracks on this, but then there's also 'Half' which is just... not that good.

The singing is good, but the songs are uninteresting.

It’s not doing it for me. All sounds technically adept but just a bit miserable for me. Lacking in any sense of fun. Could have scraped it’s way to 3 stars but it just kept going til I had to turn it off.

I’m definitely not a fan of Grunge and Soundgarden. People love the guitars and the vocals but I really couldn’t get thru this.

Hm not my cup of tea but interesting taste of music.

I didn't get all that much from this, Black Hole Sun by far my favourite that has a different sound from their heavier stuff. To be fair there's only a handful of grunge bands I like

It’s not that the members of Soundgarden aren’t talented. They clearly are. Chris Cornell has a powerful, passionate voice with an incredible range. And bassist Ben Shepherd, drummer Matt Cameron, and guitarist Kim Thayil can thrash away with the best of ‘em. But there’s three things about 'Superunknown' that just put my teeth on edge: 1) The recording of the drums, the snare, in particular, has a thuddy sound as if too much air has been left out of the balloon. And Cameron flails away on them too much, as well. Less is more, Matt. Listen and learn from Ringo Starr. 2) Kim Thayil’s guitar leads are all speed and no finesse, mostly absent of any melodic sensibility. And sometimes its as if he’s purposefully playing off-notes. Avant garde? Perhaps. But it’s not particularly pleasant to listen to. 3) The (mostly Cornell) lyrics are relentlessly depressing. Worse still, unequivocally life denying. My god, when a poor bird flew into Cornell’s window, injuring itself to the point where he put it out of its misery by smashing its head with a rock, the only wisdom he was able to glean from it and share on the final song was: ‘She lived like a murder. How she’d fly so sweetly. She lived like a murder. But she died just like suicide.’ Nearly half the song titles read like a cry for help: ‘Let Me Drown,’ Fell on Black Days,’ ‘Black Hole Sun,’ ‘Limo Wreck,’ ‘The Day I Tried to Live,’ ‘Like Suicide.’ And the heavy, heavy downward doom chord progression on songs like ‘Limo Wreck,’ for example, just accentuates these terribly bleak lyrics. Again, these fellas are talented… but desolate. When African American blues musicians speak of the value of their music, it’s often surprising to folks unfamiliar with the genre. The blues, they claim, are not intended to rub salt into an already open wound. On the contrary, the blues are about healing, an easing of the tension and anxiety that is the Black American experience, an expression of the hope and strength of voices who refused to be silenced by oppression. The purpose of the blues is to lift up the blue. This is very different from what’s going on both in the sharing and receiving of the songs on 'Superunknown.' And that’s what makes this recording a potentially dangerous and deadly LP in the wrong ears. It might have been interesting to engage Chris Cornell in a discussion about this, what value he thought his music might have on a fraying American culture. But, on May 18, 2017, at the age of 52, he killed himself by hanging.

I've got this on right now and my hopes that it will end before summer comes are fading fast. As I listen I've tried to put myself into a "rock fan's" shoes, thinking about what it is the they might like about it, to eek out as much "enjoyment" as I can. I suppose Cornell had a decent David Coverdale / Robert Plant holler if you like that sort of thing; it's a riffarama too, of course, though the guitar tone is often teeth-curlingly unpleasant; and it's dynamically arranged. I'm aware that this is seen as a classic of its genre and I've no doubt it has many fans on Now Playing but, screech and bray though old Chris might, it's been hard work for me. In its defence, it did become quite interesting when Head Down and then Black Hole Sun took a psychedelic detour - though the latter starts much better than it ends - but now it's back to identikit whinge-rock. Meanwhile, I'm considering stabbing a biro into my thigh.

What a racket!

Weak 2, probably comes down to the fact I struggle to enjoy this genre

Strong vocals

I tried to listen to it all m, I really did but I got to Limo Wreck and realised I was never going to enjoy it. Black Hole Sun is the high point for me but it stands far above all the other tracks in the album. I’m not averse to grunge, I was heavily into Pearl Jam back in the day, but this was just one long interminable dirge to my ears.

Not a fan. I respect their place in Grunge story but beyond Nirvana that whole sound is just a bland heap of sameness for me. Last gasp of over-testosteroned, warbly rockers who grew up watching too many Whitesnake videos in the 80s.

Great voice, but just more hard rock than grunge for me

Fell on black days, plus a couple radio mainstays.

Their garden has too many weeds

Grunge = Nirvana + a wave of brown, murky mediocrity. Soundgarden = an average pub band + smack.

Just couldn’t get into this album, no matter how hard I tried. Just not my genre

Soundgarden's fourth album released in 1994 to critical & commercial success, and is considered their breakthrough album. The grunge/metal/rock album was supported by 5 singles, two of which won Grammy's, and the album is certified 5 times platinum. Soundgarden evolved their early metal/punk music into something more "poppy" & mainstream for this album and it paid off. The lyrics are dark, and the music is heavy, but catchy. This is a great album.

I believe this was the first CD I ever bought. I haven't listened to this album in probably 20 years and expected to enjoy listening to this now more than I did. I guess my nostalgia for other bands of the era doesn't apply to Soundgarden.

Couldn't get a handle

From the first song this isn’t doing much for me. Too noisy/loud, not actually sonically interesting. Second song is better, but still not sold on it. By song four it’s growing on me but still would never choose to listen to it

First listen. Sounded ok. One well known song. 2/5

2/5 naaaah

Prior to listening this album, the only thing I knew about this band was that the lead singer passed away (RIP Chris Cornell). Some of the songs weren't too bad, but I wasn't a huge fan of this album. 2/5 stars.

I only really knew the two biggies from this platter (which are right next to each other); and I'd still be comfortable with that fact had I swerved this album, because I found it boring. Cornell was a great vocalist, true, but so much relies on that preternatural holler; otherwise, the paint box is a bit monochrome. Songs slide into each other without any change in mood or intent - only the subtly shifting tempi offer a clue to the listener. Dull

I was bored throughout. For me, the grunge sound is cool for a couple of hit songs, but after a while it gets tiresome. And this was 75 minutes long, so for a long time I found myself just waiting for it to end. Many of the songs were not interesting at all for me.

Phat rock but I don't like it speially

Grunge really is not my style. The edgy screaming vocals, the droning guitars, the same drums and kicks, just don't speak to me at all. 2/5.

Good at what it did, and I can appreciate Chris Cornell's voice. But its just not a style of music that I want to listen to much.

Too noisy.

I like the songs individually, but as a whole album it's a bit much for one go. Although good background music, to be fair

Not for me. Thanks though.

I knew one of the songs, but I'm not really a fan of harder, grungier rock.

Nee, hier doe je me geen plezier mee.

More like shitgarden. JK i used to hate these dudes but this album has grown on me.

Vraiment pas mon genre, un des seuls que je n'ai pas poursuivi

I know this is a critically acclaimed album but I just don't see the appeal. It's all just shouting and non-stop heavy guitar with no nuance. 2 stars.

Repetitive repetitive boring. A hit. Repetitive boring

Tried the first few songs, but never really caught on. Never really liked soundgarden to begin with...

A bit hard to get through tbh, I just couldn't get through it, none of the songs stuck out to me, it just all blended into this semi-angsty 90s alternative soup that was too sludgy to get through.

not sure how to feel; i liked "black hole sun" (incidentally their most popular song on spotify yikes) but i felt really disconnected from this album.

one star extra for kim

Metal -> 1

This must be a list of 1001 albums I hate.

I don't like Chris Cornells voice. I never have been able to get past it. His lyrics are great and sometimes the guitars leave the bluesy place they usually live at- otherwise I just can't. I really tried. When I was in middle school I was obsessed with "grunge" and would watch the movie Hype! Like everyday. I just couldn't ever get into Soundgarden. If I was at a show and the next band on sounded like this - I would go smoke.

jut not into these guys

Not my style

T'zal niemand verassen dat ik dit intense kut muziek vind.

a ver, está bueno pero no termina de gustarme, un solo tema me gustó: superunknown🫤

No, just no. The lyrics and the instruments r way too much for me. Too dramatic but not quite as disturbing or destructive as i prefer. Way too polished

found the album limited/ samey, the standout is the quality of vocal but it's headache music, it won't clear one but likely to bring on on

There are dozens of groups like this thumping out this type of stuff. I frankly find it boring. Super? I don't think so. Unknown? I hope so...

waaahhh weeeh oom dah boom. There now you’ve heard the album.

Not for me

Did not listen

Favourite song - "Half"

No me gusto mucho :(

Just not my thing. Trying so hard to be cool and I really don't think it carries it off at all. Hope we don't get another

Too much noise, too little melody for me. Not my genre.

Not for me

Made me questions why i am listening to all these albums

Easily the one of the "big" grunge acts I was least interested in back in the day, and that sentiment endures. Great voice, with a great range, but melodically forgettable songs in my opinion - their material just does nothing for me, I'm afraid.

11 - Soundgarden - Superunknown - Rating = 1 (zero if I could) I owned this album when it came out. I have heard these songs far too many times. This is now a band that I absolutely loathe. HATE the sound of Chris Cornell's voice and turn the station any and every time I hear the notes of their songs start. I am not actually listening to this album today because it offends my ears and I know this record enough to know. Absolutely not. No. Go away.

This takes me back… I don’t like “Black Hole Sun,” but really enjoy “Spoonman.”

Who came first Nickelback or Soundgarden? Who cares? They're both awful and basically the same old tired rawk for frat boys

i dont think i like grunge

unenjoyable :(

Not for me

zupelnie jie moje klimaty nie wysluchalam do konca

Musste abbrechen

Every song outside of the 2 hits sounded the same and found myself looking forward to the songs ending.

Refried Led Zeppelin with nothing new to offer. The whole album is unremittingly monochrome; even the one spot of color ("Black Hole Sun") gets swallowed up by the gray goo after about 60 seconds.

Knew from the first song that it was the kind of music that I don't really like. Reminds me of Korn which I really don't like. Black Hole Sun is a classic but it's the only good song on this and it's because it was nostalgic for me. Aside from personal preference, the musicality is very impressive. Funky time signatures and key changes all over and a ton of easter eggs referring to past tracks to give it more continuity. Overall 1/5, not my thing but I get why it's someone's thing.

GOING IN: Dreading it properly LISTENED WHILE: lounging FAMILIARITY: Know the artist, not the album SKIP RATE: Gave up entirely REPLAY VALUE: Once was plenty DISCOVERY CURVE: Never happened ALBUM ARC: Dunno, gave up VERDICT: Waste of my time BODY'S VERDICT: Statue mode FAVOURITE TRACK: My Rating: 0

Really tried to give it a go, but I was just waiting for it to end to be honest.

Don’t like the sound, don’t resonate with the lyrics.

Well, turns out I don't like grunge very much. This one felt like a chore.

I wanted to like Soundgarden as this was my introduction to them. Unfortunately, this was an absolute flop.

One great song.

Not to keen. Not a top album, maybe appeals to nostalgia I don’t know. Did not finish

Not my vibe. A bit too heavy in its hanging smoke and swaying grease and drubbing bass.

Music made for straight white men.

This sounds like nothing. Or an amalgam of early 90's sounds. Like a compilation, field recordings, or someone's best guess as to what will move records. Directionless. Formless. Tasteless. More of an aesthetic than a serious band. I have never understood their appeal and many years later still don't.

I think this will be my first 1 star. Pretty hard to look beyond the terrible vocals. Hoobastank for the 90s.

Not for me

Gar net meins

No songs stuck out in my mind, not an enjoyable listen.

En vägg av ljud utan sväng. Rock utan roll. Som att lyssna på en traktor som går på tomgång.

Only made it a couple of songs in. We weren’t fans back in the day but decided to give it a go. Just didn’t really land with us.

This shit blows chunks. Need to calm down. Didn't finish tbqhwy

Chris Cornell’s voice genuinely hurts my ears. That howly, strained style does nothing for me. The lyrics? Terrible. That kind of drum production—like it was recorded in a garbage can—is easily top 3 worst for me. Somehow, the singles are the weakest tracks on the album. Soundgarden’s never been my thing, and probably never will be. I can’t name a single song of theirs I actually tolerate.

I don’t ever need to hear spoon man again

Not for me

*no music, just loud noise

Hated it. Out of all the stuff we've listened to so far this one i could not listen to twice. I was never able to understand the appeal of Soundgarden and this did not change my mind. Every single song sounds the same (except Black Hole Sun) and is just Chris yowling over the same churning guitar. Forever.

Nope nope nope, just... no.

Not for me. It has a generic grunge sound that doesn't speak to me.

Soooo 90s

Besides “Spoonman”, the rest of the album was really boring and it all the tracks sounded the same.

SPOOoNMAAN!!! Für mich trz die schlechteren Pearl Jeam :(

Just noise.

pretty repetitive, and loud for loud sake

1 stern

Musically, it’s like a hypermasculine, hyperaggressive version of some 90s jam band. Lyrically, it’s like … idk, Christian rock for edgelord video gamers. The vocals are turgid. I particularly disliked ‘Spoonman’.

I feel bad giving this such a low score, but it genuinely put me in a bad mood. 1.5 stars?

Dull, doofy and oh so ponderous. Vintage '90s grunge seems to get worse with each passing year – who knew it had such a short half-life?

Dont like it this heavy actually

I like soundgarden, but between spoonman and black hole sun i can only give this record as a whole 1 star.

Have to be a hard rock fan. Unique sound.

Cool stuff but not really my thing.

ja nee weer helemaal niks waarom heeft dit zoveel streams

Lyssnade på 1 låt, inte min vibe alls

ziemlich langweilig.

Heavy rock

Soundgarden is like the band I thought Sonic Youth would be. I like angst in my music but not this kind. And man, 90's albums were too long. Trim the fat! 1.5 stars

Dont like it.

Репчик не очень

too hard rock

annoying, couldn't listen through it. Some songs had crap lyrics and the instrumentals weren't that good in none of the songs.

Not my cup of tea

Nur laut sein reicht nicht! Krach ist keine Musik!

Chris Cornell has an amazing voice, but this really is straight people music

Uninteressant

1/10 Really, really not my kind of thing. Quite samey sounding Best: Black Hole Sun, I guess

Du tatapoum un peu zzzzz. Passé à côté au moment de la sortie. Trente ans après, cela ne me semble pas bien grave.

Edgy emo garbage. Had to turn it off mid way through because it sounds like a rip off wwe game soundtrack. 1/5

Bad, boring, ass

Nur 2 Stücke ok (Black hole Sun und noch eins). Rest zu sehr Blechrock, nicht mein Geschmack.

Don't like it

This didn't land at all, I couldn't get through all the songs. There was a time when I liked Black Hole Sun enough to put it on a playlist on Spotify, but it seems my taste in music has changed again. I knew the album and the artist, so it wasn't "Superunknown" :D The album is about being depressed I think, I'll give it that, it's just that at the moment I like it more when this theme is presented with anger rather than that suffering helplessness tone.

Don't like metal

couldn't even finish it

Ponderous and way too long, this is a creaking dinosaur of a record. it was never going to age well and has not, indubitably.

Not my jam. Just couldn’t get in to it.

not for me :(

horrible

The album photo seemed nice and the genre intruged me but it's just a shit album. It's so repetitive and there is nothing intreseting about it. It's not unbareable to listen cuz its too metal or etc it's just so boring. 2/10 couldnt finish

Horrible

People that call this "Grunge" have no idea what grunge is. Soundgarden *were* grunge, but by the time of this album, they were just another Heavy Metal band. This album is definitely a victim of the CD era when bands felt the need to fill up the available space, but didn't have the material to justify a 70 minute album. Tuneless songs (as in no melody) based on a single riff is called filler - and this album is at least 75% filler. Thankfully after 55 minutes of what basically sounded like the same song most of the time, the last 3 songs were slightly more interesting and helped me make it to the end. Don't get me wrong. I don't hate Soundgarden. I saw them at a small club in Milwaukee (The Odd Rock) in November of 1989. They had full 8x12 cabinets in a club that holds about 75 people and they damaged some eardrums in an incredibly intense show.

Shite in the 90s, shite now.

weak compared to blind channel

Why is this on the list.

Not my type of music

Rating of each track (based on personal enjoyment of course): 01: 1 02: 1 03: 1 04: 1 05: 1 06: 1 07: 5 08: 1 09: 1 10: 1 11: 1 12: 1 13: 1 14: 1 15: 1 mean = 1.27 median = 1 mode = 1 standard deviation = 0.998 FINAL SCORE: 1

Unspeakably bad

Grunge - not my thing

The name of this band, Sound Garden, is lovely. I love gardens but this is the kind of music that could kill your plants. Not a fan of grunge, though I do like some Curt Cobain. Not this, no thanks.

Not my style of music

Not my type of music, also dnf

Couldn’t even finish it.

White boys with too many feelings.

only listened to 4 tracks. to metal, to hard for me. skipped rest

I came into this feeling like I kinda didn't like Soundgarden, but I was mostly basing this off of a dislike of Black Hole Sun. Besides, I've listened to some podcasts lately talk about what the music scene was like in their time—I was a little too young for them—and how influential they were, and I thought, okay, I'll give them a fair shake. For a little bit there, at the beginning, I thought maybe, just maybe, I was getting it. I thought, yes, this is emotional and strong and *I'm getting it*. ...Problem is, usually when you want to convey emotion, you have an emotion in mind. "Noise" is not an emotion; but eventually, I realized that's what I was being given. The rock was too aggressive to be melancholic, but not aggressive enough to be angry. It's right in a vague middle ground that says "I want to be heard but I don't actually have anything to say." So now I am, in fact, feeling an emotion, which is "pissed off at Soundgarden", because these angsty, entitled, self-indulgent creeps decided we needed to hear this whiny, single-note noise for over *an hour*? No. You're not as important as you think you are. Take your rambly 6-minute-long songs and get over yourselves. And stay out of my birthday, too. You picked the wrong day to mess with me.

Not a fan, I don't like grunge rock.

Fyeaah

That was refreshing to hear it after so many years... how I miss the '90s.
