Classic album from my youth. Chris Cornell had one of the best voices in rock history.
Love Chris Cornell's voice but I think every song kinda sounds the same. It feels like generic rock with no emotion.

“Black Hole Sun” is one of my favorite songs of the 90s. The album is a good context to hear it in, although it’s gets a tad long for me.
I thought that I was more familiar with this album than I was on this listen. I was excited to listen because I thought that I really loved the album. Somehow, it just fell a little short of love for me today. I mean, “Black Hole Sun”…sure…and a few other tracks, but as a whole, it was a little boring.
Today was the perfect Seattle day for listening to Soundgarden, its namesake sculpture just over the ridge from where I sit. The muddy guitars make me know it's grunge (or at least grunge-adjacent) but Cornell's soaring vocals evoke the hair metal of my youth. Made me feel feelings and rocked me hard.
Black Hole Sun is one of my favorite songs from the 90’s. I listened to a good amount of grunge then, so you would I’d have been inspired to listen to the album. It did not. So I’m excited to listen to this… Would have loved this more back in the 90s… but I still very much enjoy it now. Excellent!

Big up Soundgarden - Chris Cornell is in my humble opinion the greatest rock vocalist ever to have lived. The emotion he spills into this album is intense, and the fact that something so heartfelt could still spawn so many hits is a testament to his talent

I remember this being more of a soundtrack of my youth, but on relisten, I wasn't really digging it. It was meandering. The sparser bits were great. But most was kind of meh.

Black Hole Sun is a highlight
This album is off to a strong ass start. Sonically, this is strong showing of tight dynamics, great tone blending, and overall sonic texture. This is a high watermark of that late grunge 90s sound. Black Hole Sun is a single that is set up perfectly by the other songs before it. Spoonman I think is not a great song but I don't hate it. The Day I Tried To Live is a killer song. The back end is a little long for my taste, but this is a killer record.
Not a bad album really. I just was super into the last album I got on here & this one was a bit of a tone shift from the last. Wasn't in the mood, but I get why it made the list. Could easily be a 4/5 on a different day.

Liked \"4th of July\" Solid instrumentals in majority of songs
This didn't land at all, I couldn't get through all the songs. There was a time when I liked Black Hole Sun enough to put it on a playlist on Spotify, but it seems my taste in music has changed again. I knew the album and the artist, so it wasn't "Superunknown" :D The album is about being depressed I think, I'll give it that, it's just that at the moment I like it more when this theme is presented with anger rather than that suffering helplessness tone.

Solid grunge album
There are some really good songs, and then some that aren’t working for me. Some really good songs on here that pull me in. And then some others are almost exactly opposite. They push me away. Songs I like: Limo wreck, 4th of July song, like suicide
Don't like metal
“Let me drown”, “Fell on black days” and “The day I tried to live” stand out as the best songs. I would compare it unfavorably to “Jar of Flies” or “Dirt” from roughly the same era.
The hits, THE HITS! Such a banging start to the album, first few songs have you off and going on a wild ride. There's a reason you know these tunes- they shred. Some beautiful changes of tempo with songs like Black Days and Blackhole Sun sprinkled in with Spoonman and My Wave. Great creativity in mood and lyrics, and all basking in the glow of Cornell's golden pipes. From low to high, whisper to howl, what a voice. As when this album was brand new to me, I still find a lull in the back half where my interest wanders, although some nice moments on the B-side too.
Chris Cornell, man. Tremendous album with every track standing out in its own way.
Compared to other new stuff on the radio at the time, Soundgarden was clearly in the top 10%. But I have never found grunge that compelling. Great album, just not for me.
A lot has been said about Chris Cornell's vocals, but I will add that they were good. With Superunknown, Soundgarden introduced a distinctly more accessible sound. Focusing on "4th of July"---Cornell's poetry conjures with lines like "naked in the cold sun, breathing life like fire," visceral in their transfer of imagery and concept. This is a track of the highest tier in all aspects; a moment where something pure came through. "Like Suicide" is similar in its greatness, inspired by a bird that broke its neck on Cornell's front door, easy to derive meaning from one's personal interpretation. If the album is weak, its weakness is in the radio friendly tracks that deviate from what Soundgarden did best.
One of my favorite albums from childhood - a grungy, shining experimental frozen moment.

wow this album sure is 70 minutes long. do you really need this to be 70 minutes? that first song was pretty good but then they just continued to do the first song but worse. not even the really popular song "black hole sun" that i have somehow not heard before (well i think i kinda recognized it) could save it for me. there's enough good noises from stuff like the first song to save this from getting a 1.

There isn’t much to say about this album. Soundgarden - a great example of what I personally would call “post-Nirvana-grunge”. I say this as a diss, or to belittle Soundgarden at all. They have a distinct style - great riffs and *obviously* the late great Chris Cornell. This album has many many great hits such as Spoonman, Fell on Black Days and the mammoth-of-a song Black Hole Sun, which in its own right is a generational classic. The greatest thing about this album is its consistency with how great each track is, if a bit of the same each time. Sometimes it can get repetitive to have the same sort of vibe throughout the album but that’s what you should expect from an early 90s alt rock album I suppose. Great album overall. Such a staple of the era it was born into.
I see why people like it but it’s not what I’m usually going to be reaching for.

Really enjoyed this album front to back. Nothing about it was particularly supreme for me but Cornell's voice was amazing as always. Closest to 5 I can be without a solid 5 IMO.

Ponderous and way too long, this is a creaking dinosaur of a record. it was never going to age well and has not, indubitably.
There was a lot of great music released during the Grunge era during the 90's, with some incredible bands that have withstood time, but at the same time there were countless forgettable bands that released an album or two then disappeared. Soundgarden was one of those bands that rose during Grunge and have left a legacy of music that is both memorable and still relevant. The band was active in the 80's and 90's, broke up then reformed in 2010 until singer Chris Connell's death in 2017. The band's earlier albums are all good, but their most notable achievement was Superunknown. It contains some of their best songs and is solid throughout. I can't say I'm a big fan of the band, but I'll still play this album occasionally since I bought the cassette for my son when he was in elementary school, because he loved Black Hole Sun.
Soundgarden has a lot of quality hits, several of which are on this album. I'll probably never tire of hearing Black Hole Sun. Listening to this album in its entirety is somewhat tiresome. One hour is too much and some of these songs really aren't that great. I honestly didn't really enjoy my time with this album all that much. In spite of that I cannot deny the importance of rhe album, the talent involved, and how good the good songs really are. I guess a 4 for the good outweighing the bad.

4/5. Not really a bad song on this one, all goes hard, but difficult to differentiate between some of them. It also feels too long, especially without many differing themes and sounds. It's really close to a 5 but I would need to really like each song usually for it to reach that status. A more concise track listing, without multiple similar sounding songs, and it would be a perfect one imo. Still a great rock grunge album nonetheless.
There are some good moments but way too much of that slow heavy dirge material.

In lieu of Chris Cornell’s untimely suicide, listening to Soundgarden has become bittersweet. Nevertheless, it is difficult to rate one of the greatest grunge albums of all time. What I appreciate about Soundgarden is their use of psychedelic and hard rock motifs that pay homage to their influences in a way that is easily heard. Of course the music itself is phenomenal, but the real centerpiece is Chris Cornell’s magnificent vocals. He was truly one of the most gifted voices of grunge.
Moments of greatness.
I’ve said before that Nirvana belongs on the Mount Rushmore of grunge (presumably in Washington’s spot), and a strong argument could be made that Soundgarden belongs in one of the other three positions. The guitar riff in the background of “Fell On Black Days” may as well be the heartbeat of grunge. During “Head Down” I picture Hannibal Lecter decked out with his face guard and no straight jacket in a lightning storm, and with each flash he gets a little bit closer. “Black Hole Sun” is not only an iconic grunge song, but an iconic nineties song in general. The lyrics of “Spoonman” don’t seem to carry much weight, but it’s a headbanger regardless. I don’t know much about Soundgarden, but I do remember hearing about Chris Cornell’s death on the radio of a ‘98 F-150 on my way to clean pools on a May 2017 morning. With songs like “The Day I Tried To Live” and “Like Suicide,” we’re reminded that while rockstars may seem to be on top of the world, it’s a lonely place up there, and they have their own demons to fight. Chris Cornell certainly did. All in all Superunknown is a great grunge album, but I do think it’s much longer than it needs to be. Either way, this listen made me appreciate Soundgarden more than I ever had.

It seems weird to say this since I gave Ten a two, but Superunknown is a great album. Honestly, Chris Cornell is like Eddie Vedder if he was a good singer, way less whiney while still having the same low voice. The worst song here, ‘Half’, is two minutes, and even then it’s not really bad. Otherwise, this album is incredibly consistent, especially since most of its songs reach at least 5 minutes. The singles are just inarguable, and a lot of the other songs are amazing, too, such as ‘Let Me Drown’, ‘Head Down’, and ‘Like Suicide’. Just go listen to it; it’s one of the great grunge records and one of the best double albums in rock.

Of all the grunge bands this is the most palatable to me, but really less than half of the album.
I expected to dislike this, knowing Soundgarden mainly from their radio hits, but it was actually a lot better than I expected. It's still not the kind of thing I'd go out of my way to listen to, but there are some decent tracks on here, especially the more upbeat ones. save for a few great songs, this album is mostly alright. i liked the sound but it got a little old.
This record is a landmark. After years of listening it's actually the slower, darker songs that still stand among the best songs I know. The Day I Tried To Live might just be my favourite songs of all time. Those amazing drums of Matt Cameron that keep pushing the song forward combined with the low sounds of the bass. The sliding guitar sounds of Kim Thayil and the out of this world voice and lyrics by Cornell. It's a league of its own. But also some of the 4th of July, Head Down and painful last song Like Suicide.
Cornell's voice is great, but some of the songs are flat and repetitive. The hit songs are good, but that's about it. 3/5 Would listen to the hits off this again

Really great grunge album. As a whole, Soundgarden definitely is not my favorite band of the style (how could they when Nirvana, Alice in Chains and Babes in Toyland exist) but this album is undeniably really good.
What more can be said that hasn't been already about Soundgarden or just Chris Cornell in general. Legendary band, legendary album.

I can't claim to be objective about this - this was one of the albums that hugely influenced me as a teen and I still know practically every note. It's not *completely* perfect - one or two songs might go on a little longer than needed, but it's so close as to make no difference. The great songs are flawless, and the majority are really, REALLY good. Incredible vocals and lead guitar, brilliant variety in songs, huge production. Black Hole Sun and the other singles are quite well known, but 4th of July, Limo Wreck and Fresh Tendrils are also some of my favourite songs ever. I mean, OK, 'Half' is still awful, but you've gotta let the bassist sing one. Right?
I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked this. I have heard the name Soundgarden, but never actually listened to them outside of Black Hole Sun. This album was a good opportunity to listen to them for real this time, and I really enjoyed it. What a great album front to back. I like it.
Not my jam. Just couldn’t get in to it.
I’ve just begun my journey, and three albums in, this is the first one that I’ve actually heard many many (many) times. When this album came out, I was living in a two bedroom apartment in Atlanta, with a powerful speaker system, a bong, and new (now ex) wife. This album featured heavily in my life at the time. I had seen Soundgarden before their major label breakthrough success. On the Loud Love Tour, I stood right by a speaker and my ears rang obnoxiously for three days. I feared that it was permanent. So this was one of “those” albums—an album too inextricably bound to a long-ago life period to ever achieve any amount of distance from it. Their gestures towards dark psychedelia seem only half the way there. My guess is that Kim Thayil was the true head in the band, whereas the rest maybe were more a preponderance of beer drinkers. Their heavy, gloomy cock rock is when they gel as a convincing unit. But they really are a mix of the two. I just think they are better at straight heavy doomy rock than sonic exploration. Kim was always the most interesting element of the band with his raga-tinged solos. Head Down is their most on-the-nose psychedelic offering, but it really covers no new ground and is lyrically and musically obvious. Half is actually adventurous, but other than the sweet raga lick (it seems wasted here). It's not good. The singing is off key and by Ben Shepard. Limo Wreck might come as close to a satifying synthesis, but the chorus is not as strong as the verse, but the middle-end bit is pretty sick, with proggy changes. Seems scared to stay there though, and they pretty quickly return to the middling chorus for the end. Spoonman is kind of what they are best at. A sick, non 4/4 riff, slightly inane lyrics and Cornell caterwauling. Black Hole Sun, is impossible to get distance from. I really like it. It holds up, but, man, I've just heard it too much and in too many different contexts to actually know what I think. Kickstand is the most filler song on this album. Which is saying something given the vocals on Half. Never should have made it on. Pure cock rock, even if it had a little irony baked in. Fourth of July was my favorite cut on the album when it first came out, and probably still is. The mega-downtuned, distorted guitars grinding along was definitely the new idea of grunge before it broke big, and this song is a perfect example of this. Best lyrics, mood. Just want to bury my head in the speakers for this one. Just Like Suicide: good build and gnarly solo from Kim on this one. I thought I'd like this album more upon re-listen, but, alas, it is merely good, not great. Some really good songs and some that don't stick. Surprisingly weak choice for an opener given the better choices. This is definitely a bloated album that could have been much better through subtraction. Moments of absolute glee but it bored me otherwise. Chris Cornell’s voice is stunning on this record and Black agile Sun takes me right back to the 90s and being frightened watching the video on mtv and not sure exactly why. The rest came and went. It is the more polished end of my much loved genre, grunge. But I don’t love polish. I thought I’d like this more.

My love for sound garden grew a bit more interestingly! Throughout the years I heard Black Hole Sun, and I think that’s it, no other big hits on the radio that I remember having airtime. Me and some pals went to this rock festival, and Soundgarden was performing. I was absolutely floored having no knowledge at all about any songs, this band was amazing!!! So naturally as soon as possible, I gobbled up their albums and they became one of my favourite bands! Superunknown is a great piece, probably the best work that shows tints of the old and Soundgarden they would grow towards. So much songs I adore on here. I don’t necessary put this album on alsof, but I do shuffle their discography frequenty! Chris was a gem, so incredibly talented and sorely missed. Eagerly awaiting to hear the last takes of songs they are supposedly working on! 8,5 out of 10

I haven't listened to much Soundgarden, but was fairly skeptical going in. Black Hole Sun generally irritates me, and I didn't want to listen to an entire album of that sound. The rest of the album was...pretty good! I know that some people LOVE Soundgarden, but it didn't really grab me. I understand why people like them, but this is probably a one-time listen for me.
i consider myself a fan of early/mid-90s grunge, but this album just never clicked for me. to me it just feels dark and inaccessible, like it's that weird loner in the corner of the party that just truly Does Not Want to Be There. with that said, spoonman absolutely slaps. love that song. black hole sun is a classic too. but the rest? ehhh not for me favorites: spoonman (slaps), black hole sun (classic)

This is peak grunge. Talent, creativity, and production come together for a perfect album. Such a shame the Clinton's and the CIA had to offer Chris Cornell as a blood sacrifice as he uncovered their child trafficking operations.
there were several bands to come from the seattle area in the late 80s, and many of them were lumped into the “grunge” category. but one of these bands was not like the others… soundgarden. they were more metal, really. and they had the x factor that set them apart: perhaps the most gifted singer of the era, chris cornell. this album, in my opinion, is their magnum opus. it has it all… slowed down doom style riffs, mid tempo numbers, and straight ahead balls to the wall scorchers… and a solo by a man who plays the spoons! all in all, a magnificent album by a talented band. sadly, chris cornell was found unresponsive in his hotel room in may 2017, suicide by hanging, thus ending his life and the band. highlights: “fell on black days”, “spoonman”, “the day i tried to live”, “kickstand”.
This is another of those albums where I can almost forgive the songs I don't really like because of how much I like the songs I do like. Almost... but not quite. Brilliant album all around though.

Chris Cornell is the greatest grunge singer and of the greatest male singers of all time. Love the dark production and Eerie lyrics on this album. Killer riffs, licks and choruses. I think Matt Cameron is also my new favourite drummer. This also my new favorite grunge album.
It's long since been overdue to listen to soundgarden. Heard nothing but amazing things about this band. I wasn't sure whether this was grunge or not going into this since it didn't resemble anything of the pixies or nirvana l, who were seemingly the only other 2 grunge bands I knew anything about. I'm not even sure there is a definition for grunge to be honest. It's more or less 90s alt rock with heavy guitar tones, but each grunge band has their own unique contribution to the genre, and soundgarden seemingly are ko exception. Absolutely loving the tones, riffs, unique time signatures and overall feel of this album so far. Feels like I could swim in this album for hours and never get bored. And Chris cornell sounds absolutely beautiful.
Soundgarden is a band that I liked quite a lot in the past, but haven't listened to it since. And the ugly truth is that... I simply don't like it anymore. Black Hole Sun is still one of my favourite songs, but the rest of the album, or the rest of their discography is just simply tiring to listen. Chris Cornell's vocal is unique and very strong, but it gets so annoying after few songs. It's the same story with Audioslave, on the paper it looks like a great band, but I just can't listen to it at all. The music is also pretty tame and boring, unfortunately Soundgarden is rather low on my list of great grunge bands.

From a classic era. Not overly familiar with it myself but I enjoyed it.
One of the best 90s rock albums, IMHO. I'm not super into grunge and hard rock, but you can't deny how good this album is. So many great tracks here. 4.5 if I could.
Knew the band name, couldn't have named a song they had made which is how I learnt they made Blackhole Sun. Otherwise, my standard complaint of this being way too fucking long. Could have cut 30 minutes from this and made a solid album since it gets really boring after a while.
Superunknown was not an album I had previously listened to. Overall I enjoyed it. I had listened to "Black Hole Sun" and "Fell on Black Days" before this, which are great songs, but there's more to see here. It all fits under the label of grunge/metal, but there's a nice amount of variety and experimenting. However, it is not the kind of thing I'd sit and listen to all the way through very often.

This is like the 90's version of Dad/boomer rock. It's ok. Some tracks have better vocal and musical production than others. Guitars are usually pretty good. Sometimes the singer's voice is good, but sometimes it's not very good. Not at the "Red Hot Chili Peppers" level, but slightly similar in that regard. Pretty musically inoffensive. A high 3/5

There is a great comfort in Chris Cornell's voice and in Soundgarden's music. Chris' passing made the comfort melancholic and now we're left to feel joy and grief simultaneously. Superunknown is an amazing album from one of the most influential bands of the 90's/2000's. Personally, I think it's essential.

The joy of this project is discovering unexpected gems - here, then, is one of those - powerful, impactful, catchy rock, oftentimes haunting, others raw and visceral, Soundgarden certainly had it. The album improved with every listen. Artists at the top of their game.

Ugh. I know people already look forward to dissecting my opinions on crumby grunge bands, so here it goes ... ("this album sucks" - that's for you @jared) Chris Cornell (RIP), has / had such a distinct voice. I don't mind listening to it sprinkled here and there, but it harkens back to 80's poodle-farmer, hair rock. Honestly, 'Spoonman' (?) WTF is this song even about... the guy that plays the spoons or cooks his drugs in bent spoons, who gives a shit? This song rivals 'Closing Time' for dumbest song ever recorded. Let Me Down - Crack is whack and so are Whammy bars. Fell On Black Days - See Black Hole Sun Black Hole Sun - it's a great track ... MTV didn't think I could ever get tired of that mind melting video, but guess what ...? The Day I Tried to Live ... this is a really great song, big dicks straight up for this one. And on this topic, it's not cool for me to shit all over this album when I know that CC suffered from depression for most of his life and died by suicide. He was super talented and what I've read about him made it sound like he was kind of a reluctant celebrity just doing his thing. HIs thing / this thing Superunknown just didn't resonate with me when it was released.
I don’t blame my group members for not being able to fully get into Soundgarden’s “Superunknown.” One even assumed my grungy curmudgeonness in the face of his criticism. But I think “Superunknown” is only Soundgarden’s third best album, despite its popularity, and the band occupies a weird place in Seattle’s early 90s grunge scene. Their roots are much more metal, which is clearer earlier in their career, and on the superior “Badmotorfinger.” After “Superunknown,” they got a bit grungier but in an unconventional way, on “Down on the Upside.” That’s the one I think I listened to the most back then. Chris Cornell has one of the best voices in the history of rock music, and “Down on the Upside” showcased it a bit better. For other great non-Soundgarden showcases of Cornell’s voice, Temple of the Dog offers something much more grunge, and Audioslave brings the hard rock. I’ve only checked out a little of Cornell’s solo work, though it's something I ought to revisit. So if “Superunknown” didn’t do it for you, I recommend trying something else from the Cornell catalog. As for “Superunknown” itself, “Black Hole Sun” was the can’t-escape-it hit. I can't help picturing the melting Barbie dolls from the music video when I hear it. But it’s my least favorite song on the album, and one of my least favorite Soundgarden songs. “Fell on Black Days,” “My Wave,” and “Day I Tried to Live” are much better. The album is overall too long, a problem that they would not fix on the follow-up. Trimming a few songs could make for a tighter package. “Superunknown” is part of a pretty epic year in music in 1994, but in the end it's not as strong as many of the others that year, or of their other output.
My review of Grace by Jeff Buckley referenced how 1994 was the most incredible year for music (Portishead, Weezer, Beck, Jeff Buckley, Beastie Boys, Green Day, Live, Tori Amos, Cranberries, the list goes on) and Superunknown is part of what made 1994 incredible. Chris Cornell is one of the best male rock vocalists of all time, his range is ridiculous, and his voice is just raw power. Soundgarden may not be my favorite of the projects of Chris Cornell since I prefer Audioslave to the more heavy metal sound of Soundgarden, but his voice is nothing short of 5 stars every time.

A bit disappointed. I was expecting to like this a lot. It’s good, but the music overall is lacking something. Black Hole Sun, Fell On Black Days, and Spoonman stand out prominently. The rest are just fine. The album is long too at 70 minutes. Cut it down to <40 min including these three songs and it would be much improved. Chris Cornell’s voice is amazing though. It’s a shame the music doesn’t consistently match his talent.
Soundgarden is the third best of the four big Grunge invasion bands. They're just fine. I don't hate them, but I only really like a handful of their songs.

I can't believe that I have never listened to this album. Black Hole Sun was one of the first songs I ever really loved. I remember when I started getting more into music, I would look for this album and would usually find "Down on the Upside" and was worried it didn't have Black Hole Sun on it. Maybe I would've been a whole different person if I had taken a leap of faith on Soundgarden and not "Mellon Collie..." Anyway, almost 30 years later, I finally listen to Superunknown, and yes, I love it. There are some moments on here that are a little "Triple M" dad rock (at least now in 2023). What sticks out to me on this album is the performances and the recording. Kim Thayil is an amazing guitarist that really colours this album. And of course what can I say about Chris Cornell. Favourites: Black Hole Sun, The Day I Tried to Live, Limo Wreck, Head Down, Fell on Black Days

I did write a load of notes for this one but I forgot to save it, so not without tracks analysis on this one unfortunately. Overall I really enjoyed this album, I had already heard "black hole sun" and I class that as one of my 10 ten fav songs. The thing that really stood out for me on this alum was Cornell's vocals , they were fucking out of this world on all tracks. This album also made me reflect as there were some darker moments, and especially considering what happened to Cornell, it really made me reflect and appreciate this album even more. Fav song-Black hole sun least fav- There were some songs i did find a bit boring but I don't remember which ones

Despite me giving this a four (because it is good) I'm disappointed in this album. Black Hole Sun is just such a good song that I figured the rest of the album would be up to snuff, but there is definitely filler here bloating the run time, and it makes the album much less enjoyable to go through than I would've hoped. However, stepping back and actually listening to the album for what it is, this is tight, and can get you into it, no matter the situation, and the songs that are good are REALLY good. I think all of that earns it a light four, despite it's hiccups. I mean, Black Hole Sun gets it up to a three star all on its own, so why not add a star for everything else?

This album was 3-4 songs too long. I never understand the love for Soundgarden and I still think they’re a bit overrated, however some of this album are really cool, dark, and haunting, so I do have a better appreciation for the band.
This is a core grunge album and should be rated as such for a grunge fan like me, but if I had to apply levels to this, I'd comfortably say Nirvana>Pearl Jam>Soundgarden. But then again, I'd rate this closer to Pearl Jam than to Hole, so I'll go with a slightly begrudging 4.
I really liked it. Particularly enjoyed fell on black days, black hole sun, and 4th of July. Strong 3 but not enough to this album to warrant a 4.

However, Head Down and Black Hole Sun were awesome. I'm so glad I heard them. I didn't expect to like this at all, so coming away with not one, but two really good tracks in a major win in my book.

People that call this "Grunge" have no idea what grunge is. Soundgarden *were* grunge, but by the time of this album, they were just another Heavy Metal band. This album is definitely a victim of the CD era when bands felt the need to fill up the available space, but didn't have the material to justify a 70 minute album. Tuneless songs (as in no melody) based on a single riff is called filler - and this album is at least 75% filler. Thankfully after 55 minutes of what basically sounded like the same song most of the time, the last 3 songs were slightly more interesting and helped me make it to the end. Don't get me wrong. I don't hate Soundgarden. I saw them at a small club in Milwaukee (The Odd Rock) in November of 1989. They had full 8x12 cabinets in a club that holds about 75 people and they damaged some eardrums in an incredibly intense show.
Great production. Chris Cornell had such an amazing voice. a bit long, as was the standard at the time. Loses a bit of steam in the last third. Nonetheless a fun record. 3,5 stars
Highlights: "Black Hole Sun," "Fell On Black Days," "Spoonman," "The Day I Tried to Live," "Mailman" One of the strongest 90s grunge albums. Picks up both Pixies' uneven measure schemes and Alice in Chains' southern gothic dissonance and dynamic extremes in vocal performance, while adding a more competent use (or affect) of Indian musical ideas than their 60s psych predecessors. The lead guitar is the weakest part of the album, but the rhythm section is excellent. Lyrically, Cornell has this pattern of being very coherent and incisive when he's writing something depressive, which is most of the time, but almost completely nonsensical when he's trying to be upbeat. In other words, the slow-burners tend to be just as strong as the rockers.

This was great. I'd always thought of "Black Hole Sun" Soundgarden and "Spoonman" Soundgarden as being different eras throughout the bands life, so colour me surprised when one came on directly after the other. Chunky without sacrificing melody. And that VOICE.
One of the best albums of the 90s and easily as good as Nevermind, Ten, and Dirt. Classic.
Emblematic of popular rock at the time: blending sludgy production with addictive hooks and melodies. "The Day I Tried To Live" is my personal anthem.
This album is a classic from my own formative years. Chris Cornell's voice is one of the greatest of all time. Black Hole Sun was one of my favorite songs in high school. The Day I Tried To Live hits me different now. Love that one. And of course, Spoonman :)

Ik word nooit zo warm van deze muziek. Het is vast allemaal goed gedaan hoor, maar m'n oren worden op een gegeven moment moe van de muur van geluid die ze op je afgooien. Alles de hele tijd maar die beukende gitaren 'on steroids' (het blijft leuk je te bedenken dat het allemaal niks zou voorstellen als je even de versterker uit zou zetten). Niet voor niets werd Black hole sun de hit van dit album denk ik dan, omdat het een zeldzaam moment van (enige) verstilling biedt.
Een aardige rock-plaat die zich wat meer richt op de echte luisteraar en wat minder op de feestende headbanger. Soms verzandt het in herrie (Het repeterende My Wave is verschrikkelijk). De stem pakt mij niet zo, al zit er wel kracht in. Daar tegenover staan leuke muzikale vondsten als The Day I Tried To Live. Ik middel het uit op drie sterren.
Wat Soundgarden onderscheidt van de andere grungebands, is ten eerste de dijk van een stem van Chris Cornell. Maar verder ook de complexere ritmes en composities, waar drums en gitaar een grote rol in spelen. Het is nooit te simpel 3 akkoorden of boemtakataka als Nirvana. Alice in Chains gooit er groove in en heerlijke meerstemmige vocalen, maar de stem van Cornell is zo krachtig, dat hij het allemaal in zijn eentje kan dragen. Om de stem eigenlijk op zijn best te horen, zou je Cornell akoestisch solo moeten beluisteren, maar dan mis je ook wel weer de dikke drums en gitaren. Later met Audioslave was het wat minder duister met Cornell. Maar muzikaal is dit gewoon de beste periode, met Badmotorfinger en Superunknown. Absolute wereldplaat.
no hate, i just think it wasn’t really my jam. certain songs did get me really entranced, but other ones just... kinda were there? like the band obviously has amazing chops and a great sense of theory, but there wasn’t much variety from song to song and the length alone made the album drag pretty quickly. idk maybe i just needed to be in a different mood :(

Just massively boring and unremarkable
There's rock and then there's big budget, blockbuster, leave nothing on the table rock. These songs are awesome and really layered. There's a wall of sound style to the production -- lots of details and flourishes and reverb to fill out the sound and make these already big songs sound absolutely mammoth. It's well done and very effective, probably because the songwriting puts such a focus on melody. I've never listened to Soundgarden outside of the hits ("Black Hole Sun" is a classic that still sounds great) and I really enjoyed this. Sounds just as good on headphones as it does through a car stereo. There are some cool surprises here too. “Half” is a really interesting one.
I let out an audible "ooof" of excitement when this album popped up. I will always be so captivated by Soundgarden. This time period was a goldmine for music- Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, Alice in Chains, and Soundgarden. Despite the common thought that the first two are probably higher rated acts than the rest, I think this collection of 5 bands dance around being the best group depending on the day, and Soundgarden pretty often is that band on that day for me. "My Wave" is such a cocky fun energy track. To me it feels like you're with your friends and about to show up to that after school flagpole main event fight but you're also a person who has the wit to know that there is an alternative to fighting, and you are only going to resort to whooping someone's butt if you really need to. What a weird concept for a song (or at least my version of it). "Take, if you want a slice If you want a piece If it feels alright Don't come over here Piss on my gate Save it just keep it off my wave" (check out that bass groove change from 4:00 to the change at 4:15) "Fell on Black Days" is one of the most important songs for me in my life. Maybe a top 5 or top 10 song of all time in my ever-adjusting list. I loved the emotionally grey / melancholic guitar riff from my first listen (the music video is killer and reflects this emotion so well) and I have played it thousands and thousands of times trying to better get inside of it. This is also the first song that I ever sought to learn to sing while playing guitar. I was changing from a metal shredder boy into a singer songwriter man and this was such a wonderful segue piece for that. It is inherently an incredibly hard song to sing while playing though hahaha. "Superunknown" features such a wide and impressive vocal performance. He just howls over the top of the band- like he's on top of a car in Mad Max just rampaging through the desert and screaming his way through the wastes. "Black Hole Sun" is just as important for the grunge rock scene as any other grunge track from this time. Maybe not as universally loved as "Smells Like Teen Spirit" though but to me it is equally as good. "Spoonman" - what a weird, weird, speedy, eclectic piece featuring a famous street musician who would play spoons on his knees. this was originally written for the soundtrack for the movie "Singles" which is an amazing amalgamation of 90s rock talent. "The Day I Tried To Live" is so dynamic and the weird real-yet-surreal music video accompanies the vibe of the song perfectly. How great is that under-the-current-of-the-waves bass line? I always thought this song was about depression and how every day is a battle, and how dreams can be so wonderful and there can often be such a comedown upon waking up and realizing that that wasn't reality- this is. I love how it starts to give you another verse at around 3:30- only for you to get pulled back into a chorus and yelling "SHOULD HAVE STAYED IN BED". It's such a perfect blend of lyric intention, vocal affect, and music. This is one of my favorite driving songs. "4th of July" is one of the most underrated rock songs of all time. That riff is so stupidly heavy. It's like Soundgarden decided to give us all of these amazing diverse riffs in this album, like the clean melancholy of "Fell On Black Days" and the weirdly optimistic riff in "Black Hole Sun" and then they say "hold on, here's the heaviest riff you're going to hear for the next few decades in the middle of all of that". Listen to the SLUDGE in the guitars. It crawls at you like a monster in a horror movie- pulling itself through mud and blood and who knows what else to get to its' next victim. How incredible is this album cover? Stunning visual emotion. I love seeing movement in album covers. I was really saddened by the death of Chris Cornell. Gab and I were fortunate to see him twice- once as a solo act in July 2007 (our first concert date), and later with Soundgarden (with Alice in Chains) on May 18 2013 and they were incredible- a dream come true to see them. He died 5 years later to the day of the 2nd time we saw him and it really hurt me. I don't usually idolize a lot of celebrities but the few that I do I really look up to them and he was (is) on that short list. Music lives forever though! His solo album is kind of a secret treasure chest of good songs that many people don't know about. This album makes me feel so much. Easy 5/5 for me and most likely on my top 10 albums of all time.
Album 17 of 1001 Soundgarden - Superunknown Favorite Track : Rating : 5 / 5 They hit it from the first beat of the first track. I know of Soundgarden, of course. Listened to them on the radio in the 90s, but have never sat and intentionally listened. Had me some flashbacks to listening to 99X, here in Atlanta, back in the 90s, I felt it. This is a good representation of that moment in time. Good rock. Enjoyable, all the way through.

Classic grunge. This is one of the albums - along with Nirvana's Nevermind and Pearl Jam's Ten - that moved grunge from the Pacific Northwest into the mainstream. Singles such as Spoonman, Fell On Black Days, and Black Hole Sun propelled the album up the charts and are still mainstreams of Alt Rock Stations and classic rock stations alike.

There’s definitely greatness to be found in several tracks, as well as Cornell’s performance

Not bad, close to metal, nothing special
Soundgarden never clicked for me. This entire album sounds like generic hard rock and every song (except for "Black Hole Sun") follows basically the same formula. I've had one album from each one of the Big 4 of Grunge, and this was almost definitely my least favorite. "Black Hole Sun" is awesome though.
Suitable for a solo walk in the city!
ok. to me its another grunge album that's fairly similar to alot that were around at that time.
Interesting rock. Quite heavy. Got to be somewhat angry or depressed to appreciate.
Pretty cool, really enjoyed the wave, which has an early foo fighters sound to it. Not huge on grunge but did well to compete with Nirvana
