Reviews (page 12 of 13)
My 800th album and it could have been a lot better. This is another good example of the major disadvantage of CD’s. The temptation of some artists to fill the disc up with loads of padding instead of keeping it at under 40 minutes, the good old fashioned way. Heavy US grunge was never going to resonate with me however long I was expect to waste my time listening. Still could have been worse. It’s not hip hop (c)rap. 800 albums and my average star score is still 2.62. Not much scope now to getting that up to 3. So depressingly looks like this list was not meant for me. 2/5 12/3/26
Every song is too long & annoyingly slow & droning for my taste. Fond memories of Spoonman making me laugh playing Rock Band. Equally unfond memories of having to play Black Hole Sun. Jed sang em better
It’s an alright album.
Allemaal hetzelfde
Long noise
If you likw grunge its a near perfect album. Turns out I like Soundgarden less than I thought (Aside from a couple amazing songs on thje album).
2.2
Love the time signatures of My Wave, the chorus of Head Down and the guitar solo in Like Suicide. Other than that it's so incredibly boring and somehow grating at the same time (courtesy of the singing style) - those three songs are the only things bringing the rating to a 2 (and JUST ABOUT).
Could have easily just played black hole sun and told me the rest of the album was just like that but worse. Would have saved me some time on a Tuesday.
Black hole sun a classis. The rest forgettable. Guitar fights with bass. Kick inaudible
Still not remotely moved by this.
Grunge wannabe album, not on a level with nirvana.
I couldn't get into this one either. I just liked one song
meh...
Unable to make it through this one. A couple of these grunge-type 90's songs are okay, but there is nothing to make this album a journey of any kind.
RIP to a legend but I just don’t feel millennials rock music in my soul
4/10
Hate soundgarden so bad, principally didn't dislike it enough to give it a 1 bit it was close. Very boring to me
I like the sound in here but not much did it for me in particular.
Another overrated album from the 1990s I’m afraid.
Too f-ing long Not a valid complaint but this album is too long for songs that begin to sound the same at some point, easily could have been shorter (much better) Songs are good tho,
I like grunge, however I’ve always been allergic to Soundgarden. The mix is mushy to me. The instrumentation sounds simplistic and samey. Not my cup of tea.
It was fine. Some songs run into each other and some songs are drawn out.
I did't really like this. It just sounds very same same. Generic stadium rock but like soooooo generic.
"Fell On Black Days", "The Day I Tried To Live"...
My least favorite flavor of 90s rock
Only good songs are the their three most popular ones. Generally I don't like their sound, they are too boring :p
I like grunge, but how this lot became as big as they did (say compared to The Screaming Trees) is a mystery on the basis of this album.
Most albums could be cut to 25 minutes. This is a great example. Would be a ripper. Also, why do so many bands have to add a 7 minute last track like they're trying to do their own version of Desolation Row
A little piece of H. Land trivia: Black Hole Sun is my least favorite song, beating out Cotton Eyes Joe because it’s a full two minutes longer. When I saw the run time of this album, I slumped. But I made it through, and even turned it up real loud. There were about 2 minutes of this that I really liked, on My Wave and I think Head Down. Ranking this album is hard, because I’m just not into the sonic palette of grunge. Ultimately, it gets a two, because it’s definitely not worse than Aftermath, but I wouldn’t listen to either again.
Algunas buenas canciones. Black Hole sun God.
I didn’t like it but glad I listened to it. Standout: Black Hole Sun
Ugh, this annoys me so much - I listened to it in its heyday because of a boy.
Too long by half. Cannot stand the front man's voice. Starts off hot but never really changes or evolves, creating a similar sound throughout.
Not for me. Too harsh. Didn’t get much from the lyrics. Seems important in the evolution of music, but I didn’t enjoy listening.
I personally just find grunge to be very uninteresting. If I liked the genre, I’d probably like this album, but I don’t.
Idk I don't have much on this. Nothing really hit for me. I can see how it's actually good because the vocals are insane, but it just wasn't for me.
such a post nirvana slog. bleh
4/10 - wanted to give this album a chance but really just not the type of music I enjoy
Just another one of them rocky rock mc rock too much for me I only want the rock with the female #femminsim
Wasn't for me back in the day and isn't for me now.
Not my genre :,(
This album walked so Nickleback could also walk
I need to give this a listen when I am in a different frame of mind. I'm just not in the space for this right now. The album is not bad, the timing of this suggestion is. LOL
Hmm some good moments and time sig changes but overly long and plodding for me. 2.5/5
only one unique song, everything else sounded the same
I don't think Grunge/Heavy Metal are for me. Everything sound kind of similar. The songs are soo long and it does not provoke any emotional response for me. I don't like the singers voice. I just don't like that kind of music.
Superunknown - Soundgarden Well… it’s just white! That’s all. Great vocals though.
Not really my thing but I can appreciate the craftsmaship that went into it. There are some songs that I enjoyed but if I am really gonna appreciate this album I'll have to listen to it a few more times.
I’m just not a very big rock girly. The album would’ve been amazing if I was into that sort of thing. The songs all sounded the same to me, but they were good songs. I could see myself turning this album on to impress someone else with really good music taste.
Beste nummers: Kickstand, my wave, black hole sun en spoon man. Kickstand bracht lach op mijn gezicht. Standout op het album Vrij dramatisch.
It was fine, don’t necessarily love this type of rock
I've always found Soundgarden empty and vapid.
Spoonman and Black Hole Sun to one side this is as generic as it comes.
Love Black Hole Sun, but this isn't my fav genre and hard to get through this one.
Favorite Song: Black Hole Sun Least Favorite Song: Superunknown I'm sure I would appreciate this more if I was a straight man. Some of the songs are just uninteresting and drag on for a little too long.
Not really my style, but I'll give it another listen.
Big swing cock rock. I know it was sold as grunge in the day, but hard to hear huge differences from LA and hair metal bands of the same time. And there is nothing wrong with hair metal. It has the CD-era problem of too many songs: like 4 or 5 could be cut for a leaner meaner record. Glad they broke big from this, I guess
nepatinka metalas
Gibt mir nix :/f
One of the albums of all time
What did rock music ever do to you 90s? 90s mainstream rock is not to my liking and this is no real difference. I just find it quite boring. The vocals are good though. Just your run of the mill 90s grunge. The album length was way too long. Strong 2.
I find the vocals grating and each song contains such a similar energy that I skipped through them all. Not the vibe for me despite liking grunge-derived bands and genres. Where is the emotion to make me care? Favourite song(s): Blackhole Sun and Spoonman are the standout classics, of course Least favourite(s): everything else, I suppose… none of it was memorable at all… oops!
hard rock, metal, whatever, it’s fine. black hole sun
This album has a lot of great singles, but overall the album was medicore at best. Especially with the mix on the first track sounding so muddy that you could barely hear Chris's voice.
exhibit three million that the most important aspect of producing a good album is knowing when where and what fat to trim. the second most important is not having a sound that is evocative of a sweaty armpit
Ploddingly mediocre.
Average American rock
Melting Barbies aside this is a slog. I know, I know - “something, something grunge.” But maybe the most interesting part of this is Chris Cornell’s voice? Dude had some pipes.
I love Black Hole Sun, so was really looking forward to this album. It was a disappointment. The songs have some nice guitar work, but nothing else really works for me. My Wave starts out ok, but then devolves into this weird repetitive noise section. The next few tracks are mostly forgettable. Then Black Hole Sun kicks in and I'm fully vibing with it, wonderful song. Spoon man keeps that energy going, also a great song. Limo Wreck has some really good music. Then the album dips back down and just loses steam for the rest of it. And its also way too long to be this meh. Best song: Black Hole Sun
I really blackl hole sun, great song the rest is terrible grunge noise.
Never been too sure about this album, it's alright but ultimately just a bit bland and unexciting, boring even, and somehow not grungey enough.
A bit tedious.
This was such dad rock droning noise. Literally nothing memorable to speak of.
Tonight, on a very special edition of me writing about music or something, I am completely losing it. I've had an ear infection for the past couple of days and it's driving me insane. My right ear is ringing. It's in constant pain. I can't go to sleep. Just a lovely combination of pure, unbridled suffering. To add extra stakes to this review, I have rigged my neck up to the Guillotinator 5000 and I WILL behead myself if things become too unbearable. Soundgarden is a vaguely familiar name, though I'm confident I've never listened to a single second of their discography. I'm pretty sure this is a rock group, so I'm hedging my bets on alternative. An hour-tenner. Fuuuuuuuck meeee. Grunge, too. I shoulda known. I'm not swayed by this one. On the bright side, the guitars have a nice sound at times, though the vocals are pretty weak and the songs become a bit of a sludgy mess as the album progresses. This album is also way, way too long, though I'll refrain from bitching about that any longer. "Let Me Drown" is pretty cool. I dig the punchy, weightless guitars. I like the vocal melody on "Head Down". "Black Hole Sun" is a song I've heard before thanks to the Cibo Matto cover. It's a pretty decent tune. The echoey guitars have a nice sound to them and the chorus is pretty good. "4th of July" has a bit of an ominous sound going for it, which I enjoy. Book time. Experimental. That's about it, really. Wikipedia reveals that this album sold well, topped a lot of charts, won a few awards and has a warm critical reception. Yeah, solid pick. I cosign.
while black hole sun is great, queens of the stone age autoplayed after this and it was a lot better
Initial reaction. Tedious Led Zep style rock... More than ever they sound like they just happen to have been formed in Seattle. Positive - Cornell is way better than Robert Plant. Then Head Down comes along which is something a bit different, Black Hole Sun (I admit is better than the Moog Cookbook version) is great, then back to the grind. Am I really only halfway through this? Double check this isn't some extended reissue version... no, it really is 70 minutes long. Kickstand is like a tea break, then back to work for another 20 minutes. Is this what you had when we were were listening to Britpop?
I expected more.
At first it was fine, it played in the background and neither really grabbed me or really annoyed me. But the longer it went on the more annoying it got. I listened to the 20th Anniversary release, maybe that was linger than the original? Anyway, by the end it got in my nerves and dropped a star as a result.
No mikä ettei. Onko tämä rokkia vai mitä, menevää meininkiä kuitenkin
I never really got Soundgarden. I still don't.
A bit Foo Fighters, a bit Nirvana, a bit average. I think I prefer Chris Cornell’s work with Audioslave…
Like Foo Fighters if you took away anything that made them good.
Not my cup of tea. Smooth production makes it less interesting. Not so keen on polished noise. Never really listened to them in the past. That’s not going to change. Enjoyed the opening track and , change in tempo, Head Down also decent. Mailman / Limo Wreck just plodding rubbish. Title track also dull. And Black hole sun is overrated imo.
I've never really understood how good stuff like Nirvana, Mudhoney, Screaming Trees can be classed as Grunge as well as piss boring standard rock like this.
I was surprised how much I enjoyed some of the earlier grunge-adjacent offerings (Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains) so had some optimism, but found this one a real trudge in the sludge.
Mid
This is Dad Rock. I know Chris Cornell is supposedly a fantastic vocalist but I'm really not feeling it. Just long and boring and all blending together. I was really tired of it by the end. I can see where it's not bad by any means but it actually made my day worse.
Was never a fan of Soundgarden. I’m still not.
Not awful but got bored of this quickly
I’m gonna be honest…I only knew Black Hole Sun, and the only reason that song stuck out is because we are banned from singing it in our DnD campaign. Maybe we should’ve banned the rest of the album it’s from too…
More grunge! Another half decent rock band with a few too many cliches from the genre. Not a favourite but not terrible by any means.
His voice grates on me, a few cool riffs but essentially not for me
His voice is wicked and I do like the bouncy riffs but it was very samey. Liked it but that’s about it.
Didn't listen to this in the 90s. Keen to give it a go, got bored 2/3 in. All a bit one note. 2-3 good songs
Fine, but not really my cup of tea.
decent ig alt heard rock with kris cornel all kinda sounds the same, black hole sun is a great song though
Never was a huge fan. Black hole sun is great though
Of the big Seattle bands Soundgarden is the least interesting. By the time they were known they were .asking .id tier, generic hard rock. They are only considered "grunge" because they're from Seattle and this album is the epitome of their mid tier hard rock. It owes more to Boston or Journey than to the punk and metal that inspired grunge.
Into the category of albums that I don't mind listening to but will never put on for myself.
Either my headbanging days were over so quickly I never noticed them, or they have not arrived yet, but I couldn't get into this 😐
Though I like the first (and only from the band I've listened to) album, this one didn't seem that inspired to me, and it's too long.
I just can’t get into this album - or Soundgarden at all for that matter. I really like Cornell’s voice, but this album largely just bleeds together for me. Aside from the great Black Hole Sun, I just get a bit bored by this. A regretful 2/5 ⭐️⭐️
Would be 5 if it all sounded like black hole sun
Not my cup of tea, doesn't mean it's bad tea, but it's not MY cup of tea.
Not really for me. Black Hole Sun will always be great, but all of the other songs just sound the same to me.
2 dark 4 me
𝘚𝘶𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘶𝘯𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸𝘯 may be a landmark of 90s grunge, but it didn’t work for me. At over 70 minutes, it drags on far too long — this could have been a solid 40-minute record. Chris Cornell’s voice, supposedly the band’s greatest asset, often gets buried in the wall of guitars (with the exception of 𝘉𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘏𝘰𝘭𝘦 𝘚𝘶𝘯). And as much as this is hailed as grunge, it feels more like a heavy metal clone than something fresh. Impressive to some, but not my kind of sound.
As much as I was comfortable with the Seattle Sound, I always found myself hesitant to embrace Soundgarden. I liked the singles from Badmotorfinger and some of Temple, but the general sense I had - not dissimilar from AiC and early PJ - was that this was a hard rock band that would be just as happy touring with hair metal trash as Jane’s, but not the Cure or other alternative music standard-bearers. I just couldn’t decide which guise Chris and co ultimately were and with the time having passed, so much of their riffs and general vibe was adopted and crept into the nu-metal and later wave grunge rock of far lesser bands. Even in high school, the dudes who were way into guitar histrionics worshipped Soundgarden and kinda shrugged at punk or post-hardcore. Not in a dismissive sense, but more...Soundgarden were the natural inheritors of Zeppelin and were pushing things forward in their way, whereas punk was off doing its own thing. Which maybe came together later as stoner rock, depending on how you trace the lineage, in large part thanks to Cornell and esp. Thayil’s guitar work. Anyhow, like every Soundgarden album I find Superunknown incredibly overlong and redundant. Fell on Black Days is an all timer, but I prefer Rusty Cage, Jesus Christ Pose, Pretty Noose, Blow Up the Outside, Outshined, Birth Ritual, etc. That’s my sweet spot, but I can listen to Limo Wreck for its guitar tones and be pretty happy, but the sense I come away with is one more of admiration than love. Whereas around the same time this was released I was head over heels for Siamese Dream (but also Helmet...). The narcissism of small differences I suppose.
Heavy. Sometimes too heavy. Catchy in an (un/)enjoyable way. 2.5.
This was mid even black hole sun, 2.
It’s alright, bit samey after a while - few stand out tracks but unlikely to listen again
Don't like hard rock.
I love grunge, but soundgarden has never clicked with me.
Chris Cornell has an amazing voice, Black Hole Sun is a stunning song. I wish they didn't decide to make such shitty music most of the time. 2/5.
The first half of this album almost felt like easy listening grunge. I guess I'm fine with it. I probably would never reach to put this on. It feels incredibly familiar without ever having heard any of it (except Black Hole Sun). Probably because I can't differentiate grunge from itself very well. Is this Nirvana? Alice in Chains? Silverchair? Today years old learning that Temple of the Dog and Audioslave are also Chris Cornell bands. I will say I loved the shit out of the rhythm on Spoonman. That said, after that track, the sound really started to wear on me and still had half the album to go. It feels pretty long. Great it you love it, not so great if it's not your thing.
Barely noticed it.
Just ok. Not my jam. I’m old I guess.
Not enjoyable for me, other than the songs I already knew
There are a few melodic songs on it...they're OK. "Black Hole Sun" is still the best song for me. Otherwise, I hear a lot of "screeching" and no inspiration. It doesn't touch me at all.
I don't mind grunge but I haven't listened to much Soundgarden. What I have heard, I haven't minded. I really like Black Hole Sun. But these songs are tedious back to back and the album goes on too long.
omg this was 100000000 hours long. what’s with the voice that comes with this type of music??? it’s horrible to listen to on top of already shitty instrumentals. gym music for boring people
They never appealed to me. There are some interesting things in Chris Cornell's voice and in the musicianship of the band, but I just was never that into it. At the time Nirvana and Pearl Jam were doing this better. Not terrible, but not required to me.
Wow I really did not like this. Spoonman and obviously Black Hole Sun are decent. The slow emo songs I just can't handle. Not really sure why this late 90s, early 2000s rock sound makes me cringe.
Me duele la cabeza
Grunge just isn't my thing so even one of the best representations of the genre doesn't really do anything for me. For me this was something to be endured and was not enjoyable.
People rave over Chris Cornal and yes some good riffs here but not ground breaking Black hole sun is a masterpiece but the rest blends into one
Back in 1994 my friends played this a lot and I remember liking it, though I never bought the album. Fast-forward 30 years and wow time has changed either me or the album. There's a lot of filler. There's a lot of unbearable grunge grind which has not aged well. And yes, there are some real killer tracks as well and Cornell's voice is incredible. But this is not nearly as good as I remembered.
I’m currently listening and know my opinion won’t change as the album progresses. While I like some grunge, Soundgarden never interested me and apparently still doesn’t. Chris Cornell does have a great voice, but the music is all just the same IMO.
Underwhelming and bloated. It wasn't difficult or challenging or anything, and I didn't want to rate this too poorly, but 70 minutes is a long time for an album to do nothing for me.
I'm too gay to enjoy this
Does nothing for me. I don't like the silly, American rawk voice.
2 stars for black hole sun
Safe for the radio.
Unknown band. I probably wasn't in the mood because I didn't like their sound all that much.
it's okay very dad rock enjoyable but not mind blowing

90s rock
Really not my kind of music so perhaps a biased opinion but for me it’s far too long and far too repetitive. Genuinely no reason for it not to be 30 minutes shorter than it is. At times it felt unlistenable. At times I was bored; the worst thing you can be while listening to music. Black hole sun (by far the stand out track) being such a tune is the only thing saving it from a 2star rating (I’d give 2.5 if I could)
🎧Idk just couldn’t get into this. Black Hole Sun is an anthem tho
Was just ok, did not catch my attention that much
Grunge? Feels much more like standard hard rock, veering into metal in places. Compared to, say, Dinosaur Jr. or Nirvana this feels so thin, and lacking in any kind of soul. Leaves me totally cold.
Ei uponnut, en aning gubbrock
not my cup of tea
I remember liking Soundgarden more way back then, but apparently, I wasn't really listening. It's fun for about a minute but quickly becomes very generic.
This is lame butt rock.
i have not listened to the full album but i don’t really like the sound- (though i do like the titular song!)
it's not bad, but it got a bit boring after a while
Zak core POV its 2009 and I'm walking past Zak's room I might have to give it another chance for Zak but I wasnt feelin it
sure could've gone without hearing that ever
Musically not bad. Cannot get into that vocal style though. Also too long.
Not my vibe
Not a big fan of 90s rock. I recognize black hole sun but the rest aren’t super appealing
Too intense I like more creative musicality than most classic 90s sounds
Never listened to this one all the way through but it sounds exactly as I'd expect. No my favourite 90's alternative. (12 known/22 new)
didn't really speak to me. a couple of songs had really nice compositions and guitar works, but that's about it. mostly a 'hits' artist, rather than an album artist, i reckon.
Pre-listening thoughts: this is so disappointing. Would literally rather have something laughably bad but no! Keep getting hit with just garbage 90s music. Awesome. Maybe I need to pray to the generator gods that I’ll get something good tomorrow. At least this is Soundgarden’s only album on this list. Post/during listening thoughts: if you like grunge this is good grunge. I personally don’t like grunge so it’s just bad music to me. It’s also just way too long. But not as terrible as I was expecting it to be. 3.5/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: nope Fav tracks: Black Hole Sun Least fav tracks: Mailman, The Day I Tried to Live
I think I've heard this before, but I don't remember. Lol, I thought this was heavy metal until I searched it up on rym and found out it was grunge. 2 out of 5. I'm picky.
Black Hole Sun is obviously a classic, but I was unimpressed by the rest of the album
Reminds me of KROQ, I feel like I've heard this album even though it's my first time hearing it. They definitely sound like Soundgarden. Not interesting to me. But was probably cool at the time. I don't think it ages very well. Sounds like beer.
2/5 not my style
Didn't finish this, not into it
Stark angefangen, stark nachgelassen ist mir halt echt egal gewesen
Nicht so meins. Klingt wie classic Rock aber what do i know.
A decent representation of Grunge in the 90s. Black Hole Sun is a fantastic, near perfect song, however this album does linger on a bit more than it needs to. Also feel like Pearl Jam and Kyuss had done this sound but better before this album. Best tracks: - Black Hole Sun - Limo Wreck Worst tracks: - The Day I Tried To Live - Kickstand Rating: 5/10
By the 90s, popular music had become this. Grungy sound. Uninteresting. 2/5
2024 ends in a day, and something I want to do in 2025 is listen to music with no preconceptions or sense of jadedness. This album is really testing those personal goals. I hear Chris Cornell’s one in a million singing voice here, I hear a very well-recorded band, I hear songs that mean a lot to a lot of people… this album just doesn’t do it for me. I ran it back too! I listened to it twice! I think this album, much like Nirvanas nevermind, is a bit front-loaded. I also think that this is just a rock album as much as it is a grunge album. I really want more for my enjoyment of Superunknown, it just isn’t hitting for me
2 Stars (5/15)
Felt messy
I like it. Don’t know that I would listen to it in whole again. Although, I’d love to fuck to it.
Sounds like dad rock. Not terrible, not great.
I don't get their sound. Not a 1 star because some songs are okay.
Not my cup of tea. Gave it a go and quite content to never listen to this again or recommend it to anybody. Although I'm sure there are some out there who may enjoy this, for what it is worth. Lowest score so far at 2 stars.
This album was fine. I did enjoy but wouldn’t jump to listen to it again
kim thayil's a cool guitarist and i dug some of the psychier songs, but the rest is mid90s dross.
File under: yawn.
Is this better than not listening to music? Probably. Would I choose to listen to it over almost any other music that I know? Probably not. Black hole sun is a good song though
It doesn't say anything to me, it's repetitive, maybe it's not my type of music but it ended up being boring for me, I value the guitar work but that's it!
it's good, but nothing special. some recognizable tracks. maybe need to grow top tracks: black hole sun, spoonman
fine
I never got into Soundgarden too heavily. I appreciate their craft but it never clicked with me. I like all the parts individually. Chris had a great voice. I like the guitars, bass and drums. I appreciate the lyrics etc. Even enjoyed some of their videos. But just not my thing.
Not my particular genre or sound. Some songs I have heard before such as Black Hole Sun but overall a pretty underwhelming album that I personally wouldn't listen to again as a whole and no songs that I would listen to by themselves. 2/5
"Superunknown", more like "Superboring".
Listened only to 5 songs here (i.e. a third) before dipping to spare myself from the boredom.
Too much for me.
There’s a song or two on here that weren’t bad. Mostly not my taste at all.
One time through the 90s was enough.
It stinks
4/10 - I liked Black Hole Sun probably just because I had heard it plenty of times before and the rest were not my style. It was loud and just did not sound very good.
whatever
This album would have been good if they took half the songs from it and deleted them forever. This was a gruelling 70 minutes and did not need to be this long, I got the gist of the album by like track 3 and after that it felt more of the same over and over. I was itching for this to end as I got after the halfway point. Obviously Black Hole Sun is a fantastic song, but that's probably the only song from this album I can say I 100% was into and enjoyed.
let me drown - I like the guitar melodies, the drum rhythms my wave - I like the 5/4 and the change to 4/4, I like the voice a lot too, good melodic lines, I like that low end instrument in the middle, very messy ending with the layers mixing all together fell on black days - guitar in right, cymbal in left, 6/4 time signature, one thing I'm noticing is the long durations on the songs, nice guitar solo, I liked that tremolo guitar in the left mailman - very prominent guitar, I like the melody in the verse where there's a vocal bend upwards, but other than that I don't like the overall sound, I liked that right ear isolated guitar though superunknown - nice guitar melody, I like the hook and the way they say the title head down - nice transition to this song from last one, nice chord progression, I like the drum fills, and the light guitar that plays throughout, nice fade out with just drum fills at the end black hole sun - I like the guitar in the right ear, I realised I have heard this song before that melody is familiar, nice chord progression spoonman - I like the guitar riff, and how the instrumental pauses just before spoonman, I like that bass when all the instruments stop playing for a moment, 7/8 time signature and 6/8 and 4/4, nice end limo wreck - I like the tempo and melody, I like the guitars in this one, I like how the chords change seamlessly between the verse and chorus the day I tried to live - right ear guitar is nice, and the left side with a melody too, okay tempo change nice toms and bass, good intro, 15/8?, I like the outro guitar kickstand - wow a short song, nice tambourine, I like the fast tempo, nice break from all the long songs fresh tendrils - I like that background guitar in the left side, nice guitars overall 4th of july - very heavy guitar and bass intro, heavy vibe is cool, I like the tempo how it's slow, I like how the drums come in, I like that outro a lot half - I like the transition into this song, another short one, the rhythm is interesting, nice transition there two thirds into the song like suicide - last song and 7 mins, has some good melodies and I do think they carried it in terms of length, it didn't feel super long like some of the songs that were 5 mins, good outro Overall: as much as I liked some small parts of this album, and it had good moments, it also had sections that were unbearable to listen to, as well as just plain boring. The songs felt very long and I feel like some of them really could have been streamlined to cut sections out that were repeated. If perhaps the album was closer to 40-50 mins I might have enjoyed it more. Despite all that, I think it was decent and it sounded better than I expected, so it's a 2 favs: fell on black days, limo wreck, kickstand
I dont think I like Grunge. It's like the mid 90s American mirror of Britpop. Rock retreating to small c conservatism. By my definition Nirvana aren't Grunge. They don't sound like they have anything to do with these groups.
Take Spoon Man, leave the rest
I am not a grunge fan. I find the music all very generic and moany. i can see why this album is top of the pile for grunge but it’s not for me. Its wrestling music!!!! I couldn’t pick a favourite or a song I dont like, the album was just very meh! Album artwork: Cool cover
instrumentation rlly good but i keep getting bored…….black hole sun is def highlight
Chris Cornell had a great voice. But that alone can't carry something as dull as this.
There are bands from this genre that have much more staying power. This feels dated and doesn’t transcend.
Yeah, this one wasn't for me. It was too grungy and gave "40 year olds living in their parents basement but we're gonna make it big with our garage band one day" vibes.
rock n roll, more like stone and tumble. Black Hole Sun is the hit.
Tim gives it a 3; for me it barely scrapes into 2 territory.
I've heard a few of the hits on this album before, nostalgic music takes me back to riding in the rear seat of my parents' vehicle jamming out.
Cornell has a great voice but I can’t seem to get into this. Feels like every song is the same on this very long album, musically and lyrically not very interesting.
Not going to listen to this again any time soon!
Black Hole Sun is classic, rest is a bit meh
Not into it
I should like this more than I do. Some songs just get on my nerves and I don't like the Eddie Vedder school of singing, but this album is on the better side of that at least. I really don't like Spoonman. Will I listen to again: 5%
Not my type of music, but not bad..
Drags. Not terribly interesting.
Came into this pretty optimistic but its boring af!!
Yeah..its ok. But grunge isn't my mojo. Good musicians though
Not really my jam but Spoonman is a bop!
An album that so many people have recommended and yet I just cannot get into it. Black Hole sun obvs a banger though.
Some of this is good, but a lot is disonant, cacophonous and repetitive. I wouldn't choose it.
All of the songs sounded the same to me. The best part of the album was Chris Cornell’s singing.
not my favorite genre
There is only so much grunge I can have in a day
I remember when this came out. Not into this style of music then and I’m still not into it now.
Not really my favourite thing
Boring tbh
70 minutes of this is a crime, Black Hole Sun carries. Couldn't finish
Anything metal or hard rock is pretty much a no-go for me, but some of these were pretty good. Liked Superunknown and Black Hole Sun
There’s a reason there were only a couple take away songs from this album. Black hole sun reigns supreme
Despite growing up in the late 90s and loving grunge, I never got around to Soundgarden. If I have been sleeping on them, this album certainly isn't convincing me. Obviously, I knew Black Hole Sun and recognized Fell On Black Days, Superunknown, and Spoonman after listening to them. None of the tracks were noticeably bad, but very little jumped out at me. Even after three listens, I could still barely tell these tracks apart. Most damning is that after my third listen, I decided that I might like the album if it was four tracks shorter and I literally could not tell you which ones to cut. Not because I can't chose between them, but because they all just sound like the same sludgy bleak nonsense. Chris Cornell is an impressive singer. The riff and winding lines from Kim Thayil were interesting and the way they played with odd meters from the rhythm section does put them over other schlocky heavy metal bands. None of it pop off the record for me or does anything particularly interesting, though. I'm excited to try out their earlier albums and see if I find something I like more there. I don't regret listening, but I won't be coming back.
I really like “Black Hole Sun” but the rest of this album is mediocre for me. Not exactly terrible. But there were times that I forgot I was listening. So many of these times are interchangeable that it makes for a boring listening experience. But I can’t quite say anything specifically was bad. Just unmemorable. 2/5
Not a fan of Grunge, most of the album sounds the same to be with the exception of Black Hole Sun. Just does not strike me as very original or imaginative.
superunkown? oh yeah well i wish i didnt know this album beotch
This was a bit of a chore. I knew a song or two. It was a long album. I did not need to listen and I will not be revisiting it.
not my vibe
dat heavy shit
90s grunge, fine but not for me
Soundgarden is not a good band music: hated. (⌐■_■)
I know there’s a lot more like, human spirit in this than the much worse music that was influenced by it. But it’s hard to listen to this with 2024 ears and not hear Theory of a Deadman or something. I know that’s uncouth to say, and grunge fans do not like it. I’m sorry, I can’t help it.
Oh joy, grunge. I just don't like the sound of it really, reminds me of a chain saw, construction noise, and other unpleasantness. More power to those who love it, though. I know it's really popular.
Head down and Black Hole Sun are acceptable. All other songs are too hard rock for my personal taste.
Makes me sad.
its a bit generic its a bit aggressive sometimes almost something i could like
The songs on this album really do seem to drag on and I really can't say that I found any of them to be particularly engaging.
what pearl jam does to a mf. soundgarden goes commercial and you can hear it. at least they have more edge than pearl jam, but then again, a rubber ball does as well. there are some good songs like spoonman but i prefer their rawer sound to this. If i wanted to listen to a big produced rock album from 94, why wouldn’t i listen to morning glory?? at least the Gallaghers make their songs catchy as hell. this is where soundgarden loses me unfortunately.
Album Nr. 67 Für mich leider wieder ein schwaches Rock-Album.
Just noise….
Definitely not the best. Grunge is not great. Nirvana holds a place in my heart, but everything else which I never listened to at the time, just isn't for me. Chris Cornell obviously has a great voice, and there are some bangers on this album, the only thing saving it from a 1 star review.
I like the Black Hole song
2.5 don’t really like grunge
Everything sounds the same. Why do people even listen to this?
Millennial rock I just can’t get into it man. Like there are moments Black Hole Rock but again idk it just sounds kinda cringy to me. Grunge is cool and all I’m just idk about it. I know the influence from this record but maybe if I was like really depressed but for now it’s just okay to me
Not my style
Too heavy on the electric guitar sound for me
Idk wasn't really my vibe but can confirm songs named 4 of july slap
I thought most of it was alright. About three songs in there dragged my rating down.
Too agressive for me. Not really into grunge.
2,5
Love rock, but this is not my kind of rock
Not a fan
It's just totally fine. Nothing remarkable, nothing I'm scratching at my neck to listen to again
Some ok songs but not for me
Not my jam.
2.5. Probably fine, but not my thing.
Just so samey to me and indistinct from other similar bands we've had.
Uh. Not my cup of tea...
enjoyed the front half more than expected but then it outstayed its welcome for me
Pretty cool
One note got bored really quick. Was never a huge soundgarden fan during the time and re listening to it made me realize I was fine not having it in my grunge library.
Pop metal. Not my jam.
Not for me
Finding that I can't really help but listen mostly mindlessly when it's heavy metal. Black Hole Sun stood out because of its familiarity but also its vocal-driven melody that made it more enjoyable according to my preferences. This album helped reinforce just how individualized people's tastes are, because I could listen to this 100 times and still appreciate it a fraction of how much others do on their first go. Yet again, a lot of talent exudes from the performance but I don't value it as much, especially with what it demands from me with its long runtime packed with longish songs. 4.5/10
Aesthetically unappealing to me. I don’t love the songwriting. BHS and the day I tried to live are the only tracks that really feel like well thought out songs to me. 2.1
I cannot be bothered with grunge or grunge affiliates for the most part, so I didn’t get much out of this. Black Hole Sun is the standout and the rest just sounded like lesser versions of it.
Well ... it has Black Hole Sun, which is a plus. Sadly, every other song on this album is your run-off-the-mill Grunge, where nothing is really memorable. 2/5
Falling somewhere outside of the Pearl Jam range of grunge / rock. Manages to be neither and feels kind of boring / tame at this point in time.
Not a favourite of mine. Wouldn’t have enjoyed when came out, and still not my thing.
It's some sort of rock
Ok
Mostly not my thing. A little too grungy. Black Hole Sun is the only one on here that I would say I "liked"
Nice album but didn’t catch my attention
Ok, nothing more. A bit to much or boring
Wasn't bad. Not really my type of music though.
Pretty forgettable. Again, not really my taste.
Not my cup of tea
I didn’t listen enough
all sounds the same, some vocals give red hot chili peppers, moody
Too edgy for me
One of them bands I probably should have checked out before now. Nothing spectacular. Just background music in American pie.
all the same???
wow this album sure is 70 minutes long. do you really need this to be 70 minutes? that first song was pretty good but then they just continued to do the first song but worse. not even the really popular song "black hole sun" that i have somehow not heard before (well i think i kinda recognized it) could save it for me. there's enough good noises from stuff like the first song to save this from getting a 1.
not for me really standout tracks: Black Hole Sun
