Aside from the biggest songs this is fairly bland rock IMO
The sonics, especially the drums, are magisterial but also happily broad. A few of the influences are spread too thin, turning the last twenty-plus minutes samey.

Black Hole Sun is a classic (and an ear worm) and once I’ve heard it, I cannot stop hearing it in my head for the rest of the day. Soundgarden as a whole is a right time, right place kind of band for me. Yesterday was neither. I did try – morning, afternoon and evening. I appreciate that Chris Cornell was a towering talent and Soundgarden was the definitive voice of grunge for a generation. But once Black Hole Sun had played everything else paled by comparison. It is a great song though!
I’d never think of putting this album on for a listen but I’m glad I did.
A good example of the genre. Black Hole Sun is a genuine classic.

Wasn’t too much into grunge when it was in vogue. Thought these guys were noisy and needed a weeding. Some of it is ok.
This has to be the worst Soundgarden album, made well after the best of grunge had faded. Louder Than Love is a much better listen.

Soundgarden's 'Superunknown' pays homage to the classic rock sounds of the 70s with an array of immensely tight and equally wild grunge tracks within an ambitious runtime of 1 hour and 10 minutes. I'm somewhat surprised that this album came out in 1994. While Soundgarden can be pinpointed as one of the many Seattle grunge acts that attributed to the main stream success of the genre, they do shed their influences on their sleeve a little in contrast to Nirvana who had a clearly defined sound. Chris Cornell's hectic lead vocals combatted with wailing guitars and a heavy rhythm section sounds a lot like that of Led Zepplin and Black Sabbath. However, the songwriting chops are there to not become all that derivative. Track to track, this album is pretty fantastic. The track run from Mailman to Black Hole Sun is a goldmine for eccentric and pummelling grunge music. Those arpeggios on Black Hole Sun with that heavy tone are a thing of beauty. The Day I Tried to Live has this enthralling bass line that plays in an unorthodox time signature (I believe 7/8?) - the highlight of the album for me. As a collective album, this album falls flat on its face when it comes to diversifying its sound. For my liking, an album over an hour long simply cannot be one dimensional, and Soundgarden fail to keep me engaged as a result. Toward the end there are some duds, most notably Kickstand and Fresh Tendrils, which by this point in the record offer nothing new for the listener. If this album were say 45 minutes, I would've enjoyed this a whole lot more. Still, I completely see why this album is included in this list. I've given it a 3, but it's more like a strong 3 and a half
I would not have known a Soundgarden song if I’d tripped over one. Can’t say that I was a big fan of grunge. So this was a big surprise. There were only a couple of tracks I found just noisy & boring. The highlights for me were the Nirvana-like Fell On Black Days - loved the guitar in the second half of this; Black Hole Sun - can’t hear The Beatles influence in this or Head Down, as Wiki claims, but loved the melody of this song; Kickstand - a track that actually sounded like an old rock’n’roll song; and Like Suicide, particularly for the drumming & the pace of the tune. And the production was great. It sounded like a million.
this album is a solid effort for mid 90s grunge rock. it has aged a little bit tonally and sonically. it has some cheeseball progressions and solos sometimes, but mostly it holds up and a standard bearer for radio friendly edgy light grunge stuff. this is grunge to show your grandma. good on ya boys.
It was okay. Not really my thing.
Mailman could have been in Badmotorfinger and it’s a lot of what I think this album is missing. Head Down is my other favorite from this album. Black Hole Sun is a marginally interesting song that was made unlistenable over the course of the 10,000 times I heard it. Spoon Man sucked from the outset and I wish I could unhear it for every time I’ve heard it. Soundgarden could produce the dark, sludgy, brooding sound as well as any band and that’s what I really want to hear from them. This album isn’t bad, but it strays away from my opinion of the best version of this band. It’s lighter, poppier, less complex.

Good grunge album. A bit too long.
I was all ready to call this cruddy butt-rock. And it *is* butt-rock. But it isn't cruddy. It's heavy with pretension, yes. But it's also just plain heavy, though not in a thrashing guitar tornado kind of a way. In a, well, black hole kind of a way. Oppressive tone, foreboding feel, lugubriuous groove. And unlike most wailers, Chris Cornell sounds like he might actually have a soul. Hell, he may even be soulful. For what it's worth, I didn't want to turn it off once in 70 minutes. There's no way I can low-ball an album that does that.

Never listened to the whole album but have heard most of the songs. Chris Cornell's voice is instantly recognizable. Heavy, Grungy, Rock. Good times. Favorite songs: Black Hole Sun and Spoonman (which i always thought was "strongman" - lol)
Best Song: The Day I Tried To Live. I think Cornell really lets his voice run in this track. Obvious honorable mention to "Black Hole Sun", but that song suffers somewhat from being played so much. Worst Song: Half. Far too meagre a mostly instrumental track to have this late in the album. Overall: It's pretty good. Cornell's voice is the obvious star here, but everything surrounding it is good and grungy. The main knock against it is its length. At a little over an hour, I don't think the album tries enough different things to really stand out, and gets bogged down once you get past the hits.
An album that's back-loaded with the all the goods. 'Let Me Drown' is a groovy grunge opener, but it then all feels a bit filler until the crowd favourite 'Black Hole Sun' (whose music video now looks like a stoned A-level students films studies coursework) through to the muddy jewel in the crown: the sludgy, LSD inspired '4th of July' If, whilst listening to it, you felt "do you know what? Some good tunes on this and you can hear the similarities with desert stoner rock which I love. Much prefer Badmotorfinger, Rusty Cage being fantastic
This was one of the albums that was played on repeat during my teenage years - Black Hole Sun still a stand out track, and I vividly remember the music video making an impact at the time (in the golden days of MTV!!!)
I just didn’t *get* it. This was the first big challenge to my open mind—-I’ve never liked this kind of rock outside of like the best of Nirvana, the sound is *dated* to my ears, etc. I have to try it again—-I could loosely get why it was considered so good, but I couldn’t meet it.
Okay, never given this a chance before, but Black Hole Sun is an all timer, so I go in hopeful! It's definitely good. There are other good songs on here. The drumming is brilliant.definitely the most grooveable, rhythmic grunge act as a result. However, BHS aside, which could have another half hour as far as I'm concerned, a lot of the songs have said all they need to say within 3 or 4 minutes - but choose to carry on to 6 or 7. Probably a sad byproduct of the CD age - just because you can fill 80 minutes doesn't mean that you should... So overall, a really really good, but overlong album.
I can acknowledge Chris Cornell has an insane talent vocally, but I just can't really vibe with Soundgarden. Idk why, but I gotta just leave this album as a 3.

Decent album, better EP. Tons of hits. Favorite tracks include "Back Hole Sun" and "The Day I Tried To Live". "Spoonman" was a massive radio hit, but the song is pretty terrible. Chris Cornell's voice isn't for me – the falsetto screams are a little too hair metal. They probably could have shortened this album by about 20-25 minutes. A 70 minute guitar-driven album gets boring.

Never really listened to much Soundgarden before this. But wow, Chris Cornell is one hell of a singer and a haunting lyricist. I’m not sure I’m going to be regularly returning to this album, but I feel good knowing I have them a chance and stuck through something I wouldn’t have sought out myself. The final track, “Like Suicide,” struck a nerve, especially knowing how his life ended a few years ago. I never really listened to the words of “Black Hole Sun,” but he says “No one sings like you anymore,” which is the name of his final album, comprised of cover songs. That was a great listen and I hope it makes this list. I feel like grunge takes on a whole new meaning with Soundgarden. They’re more arena rock than anything, in my opinion. Definitely grunge compositions, but the way they’re carried out production-wise gives them a Queen-ish tint. I almost feel like I need to hear it again in one sitting because I broke it up quite a bit. Really appreciated it regardless.

Great sound. A few songs stood out.
I was a fan of Soundgarden in the early days, but it all became a bit glossy and rock-god for my tastes.
This is good. I enjoy it, but I really don't what all the excitement was. Black hole Sun is good. Maybe I just suck at connecting with 90's music.

If Nirvana is grunge's Michael Jordan, Soundgarden is the genre's Karl Malone. Their music is decent enough, maybe a handful of their songs hold up, but nothing legendary. This is probably as good as it gets for Soundgarden. Chris Cornell fronted bands with awful names. I hope that didn't add to his depression.
I can't really get behind this album. It's rock, and I suppose in some way it might be catchy to some, but there aren't a lot of songs I've heard that I think I should go back and listen to. It's a shame that Black Hole Sun is the one that gets all the airplay, as it's not the best song on the album. Perhaps the most Top40 radio appropriate I guess. Overall, better 90s rock bands if that's what you're craving. 3 stars - it's ok.
None of these grunge bands for me can compare to the songwriting of Nirvana. The guitars and vocals are great, but not a single song leaves an effect on me.
A very average album that lacked any highlights and suffers from a long length and messy sounding production/recording
Soundgarden passed me by in the 90s. Quite enjoyed this and would have liked it more at the time. Dece t bit of grunge rock though.

I was kind of disappointed by this, Chris is obviously amazing but the rest of the band sounds in the pocket but kind of bored?

Nije loš album, ima dobrih stvari. Black Hole Sun mi je ono okej pjesma, ima puno boljih stvari realno, al mi je draga zbog onog jednog komentara, zna Ivan o čem pričam. Dobar grunge album, početak mog priznat da je dosta dobro starto, prvih pet pjesama su mi i najbolje. Ostatak je just fine.

whelmed. not under, not over. just flat out whelmed. veers a bit close to the one hit wonder album, but it's an ok album if you removed the hit. just ok.
This album was Superunknown to me. It should remain so. Well produced, but super generic. Again, listened in the car. I don't think I finished the album, so may revisit in the future with a better listening environment, but didn't stir any emotions.
I had only ever heard black hole sun, but there are some bangers on here. Good for getting stuff done - nice and rhythmic but dark too.
Solid 90s rawk, not super grungy but has all the classic elements of heavy distortion riffs, tons of toms, vaguely poignant lyrics, rock screams (CC's are pretty great though), and music videos with creepy bugs and other weird shit for good measure.
Not my usual type of music, but solid for that genre.
I've never really listened to Soundgarden but have always wanted to so I was quite looking forward to this. Aside from a couple of great tracks, though, this just sounded fairly generic (except Cornell's vocals, of course)

This album was almost superunknown ;) to me before listening to it today. Only really knew Black Hole Sun and Fell On Black Days. Must say it was a good listen. Had to take breaks as it's tough to listen in full in one attempt but the quality of songs on here is great. Especially liked the singles as well as some album cuts including Limo Wreck and 4th of July.

Been a minute since I listened to this. Solid rock record through and through, with plenty of experimentation (off time shit, odd tunings) to keep things interesting. I dunno how much I care about Chris Cornell as a vocalist but the music’s cool.
So many great songs interspersed with a bit of filler.
As much as I love Chris Cornelll and his voice, listening reminded me how bloated this album. Interspersed with some brilliant tracks is quite a lot of dull songs. Still enjoyable but way down the list of albums I’d recommend for someone wanting to listen to Cornell

Solid album
Great classic grunge album, with the classic Black Hole Sun. Not my type of music, a bit long-winded and I'm not a fan of Chriss Cornell, but great album non the less
OMG. Dit album begint wel heel erg als een dchreeuwerige schoolbandje. De volgende nummers zijn muzikaal best aardig, maar ik blijf me een beetje irriteren aan het schreeuwerige van de zanger. Ik vind het nummer "Fell On Black Days" leuk, maar "Kickstand" bevalt me net iets meer vanwege de energie.

You can't argue with the fact that Chris Cornell has an incredible voice. And a handful of these songs are really engaging. But goddam, Spoonman just wipes it all out for me. Maybe that's because of my initial reaction to the song when I first heard it, which was "Is he singing about a guy who plays the spoons?" And it turned out he was. And it just seems too ridiculous to me - the song is so heavy, but it's about a guy playing spoons. Maybe it was even more ridiculous back in 1994, when there was so much heavy, serious music going on. I just couldn't dig it. Black Hole Sun holds up pretty well, though.
I guess I'd never listened to any sound garden as I did not know Cornell was the singer. I also didn't know that audioslave is most of ratm. So I learnt a lot?

I like Soundgarden, but except for the hit "Black hole sun", I think this is a pretty normal grunge album. Reading the Wikipedia article, I realize the importance of the album for Soundgarden history, but the songs themselves are fine and nothing more, nothing special.

I really don't love soundgarden but I fully get the appeal after listening to this album! It was interesting and it had a really cool perspective, so I liked it.
02/08 - Yesterday I worked on finishing up detail development in the Drum Storage building and setting up an area 1 RCP for the manufacturing building. Although im not one for metal music, I thought Soundgarden was definitely an exception with there cross-over metal/alternative sound. I actually really enjoyed listening to this album and had it on repeat for about half the day. My favorite songs were Black Hole Sun and Spoonman.
Disappointed, was expecting more tunes like Black Hole Sun but only a couple of decent tunes for me. 2* would be harsh however

Grunge can be good but most of the time it just sounds like monotonous noise where all instruments and voice get lost in a jumble of sounds. The notable exception on this album being of course Black Hole Sun, where the musical arrangement is noticeably more "pop"

Black Hole Sun just sounds very different to the rest of the album. Every song is a rock marathon... Must have a guitar solo to make the song 6+ mins. The guitar work is pretty incredible, but just gets redundant when every song does it. I love the drummer as well.
The older I get, the faster this style gets old when I give it a listen. It was key pop of my heyday as a creature of my culture, masquerading as something non-mainstream. Black Hole Sun is an amazing song though.
Soundgarden is obviously really good. Just not exactly my flavor. Fell on Black Days and Black Hole Sun can't be skipped, though.

I thought this was a pretty average grunge album. It had some nice moments that I connected with, but overall I found it a little dull and repetitive.
You really had to pick the 70 min one with Spoonman and Black Hole Sun instead of Badmotorfinger. 2.5 stars because half of it is good.
hj estou muito hater mas vamos la. meio comercial e sem originalidade. as letras não fazem sentido, a proposta pode ate ser impressionista e abstrata mas não é bem executada, é desinteressante e simplesmente ruim; falta profundidade e o instrumental não compensa, é repetitivo, e alguns riffs legais não são suficientes para mim. se você só quer compor riffs, melodias e whatever apenas faça só isso e pare de tentar compor letras. parece música de uma banda fictícia de alguma série barata da amazon prime. e essa porra tem 15 faixas. vai tomar no cu. quase me perguntei se eu ouvi mesmo o mesmo álbum que a galera do reddit faixas que pareceram menos entediantes do que as outras: black hole sun infelizmente spoonman, alem da letra ser tolerável o instrumental é mais melódico, experimental e interessante, mas não sei se é uma música que eu colocaria por vontade própria ao invés de ela só por acaso tocar na minha playlist de likes e eu decidir não pular. limo wreck 4th of july ⭐️mvp do album, track mais forte ate agora half ⭐️ like suicide ⭐️ segundo mvp do album

Angry grunge rock .showcasing Chris Cornell great voice. But “played little to straight a bat”to be anything other than average 90's mainstream rock.
I did not care for superunknown... I saw someone say "I bet nickleback enjoyed this", they are so fucking right I've always had an issue listening to this kind of music to be honest. It's just not for me. Black hole sun is a tune, but I dont want to listen to a whole one hour ten minutes of this. Highkey I like when his voice is less "all out" all the time, like on Fell on Black Days vs a song like Let me Drown where it is just grating to be honest TLDR: I see the appeal for those who like this, but it's not for me

Chris Cornell's got an amazing voice, there's a few songs on here that are great especially towards the front and back, Black Hole Sun is great. Also this album is a nightmare of compression artifacts and sounds awful.

Generic sounding metal album
I honestly could not finish this album for the life of me. I got 8 songs in before calling it quits. They all sounded the same and I had lost all hope of any of the remaining songs sounding even remotely unique. I just don't think that rock, as a genre, is for me. That's not to say that there aren't rock songs that I enjoy, but they are few and far between - especially in comparison to other genres. 'Black Hole Sun' was the only song I actually liked, and that's because I saw it used in an edit of Dark Souls 3.

First of all, what a great band name. I wish they lived up to it. The vocalists' vocal range is great, and distinct. But the rest just feels so generic. And the songs are the same sound with slight timing differences. For over an hour. The singles that I recognized did add some nostalgia.
I’m 10 boring songs in and there are five more to go. They had no business making a 70-minute album. Every song sounds the same, has a predictable chord and lyric progression. Meh. 2 stars.
I've never been a fan of Soundgarden. I don't like Chris Cornell's voice. He's too yelly. I do like the music video for Black Hole Sun, and I don't mind that song. I recognized a couple other songs on the album: Fell on Black Days and Spoonman.

To me, sounds like a GTA radio music. Soundgarden works in that kind of scenarios but I would never really reach for them when searching for what to play.
Every interminable intro was painful. Not my jam.

Ik luister vaak ‘s ochtends al naar een album. Dat was een verschrikkelijke fout… Ik kan niet anders zeggen dat ik mega opgefokt raak van deze herrie. Je hebt een distorted gitaar, van de drum worden de symbalen veelvoudig gebruikt. De bas heeft dezelfde riff als de gitaar en de zanger zit er door heen te janken. Tadaa je hebt een hardrock album. Voormij klinken ze allemaal hetzelfde. Ik vind het saai.

Meh... The actual riffs are OK. But most of the songs are too long without much happening (which is not bad per se if I dig the vibe, which I don't feel here), and obviously the whole album is much too long without enough variation. Also I'm not a fan of "grungy" vocals, what most people see as a strength of this album. Of the many many tracks I only really liked "Mailman" and "Black Hole Sun". 2/5 - below average

Listening to the entire album hasn't changed my opinion on the songs from it whatsoever. I kinda like Black Hole Sun and Spoonman, and that's it. Nothing is different now. I mean...yeah. I've had too many 2s or 1s in a row. Can my next album be something really good, please?

eh, sei não. tem umas relativamente decentes, mas falta algo. já outras são bem ruins mesmo. MUITO mais metal do que eu esperava, o que é paia. acho que entra um pouco no balaio dos "clássicos do grunge" (alice in chains, esses mano, pearl jam) que eu sinto que são a mesma coisa: mei xoxo e sem sal.
i’m a fan of psychedelic rock so every time it wasn’t that i was a bit bored. perhaps it was the fault of my environment that i give this low stars. i was playing minecraft on PS3 while listening so it didn’t really fit the mood. i just found the whole thing quite same and boring. my favorite was the final track, like suicide, the only one i listed to twice. i also enjoyed fell on black days. both of them are a bit more slow so i likey likey yum yum my least favorite could honestly be any of the other ones. it’s not egregiously bad, it’s just all the same.
I'm not a big grunge fan, It's one of those genres which I find is improved when you add "inspired" to the end of it. The real reason I'm writing this review is because the titular track "Superunknown" has an almost identical guitar/drum section to "Lean On Me I Won't Fall Over" by Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine. I can't find anyone else who is pointing this out, the albums both came out within a few months of each-other which makes me think this isn't a case of one sampling the other and instead either sampling a third older riff or maybe just some insane luck. Anyway I feel like I'm going crazy here, they're almost identical. Every other opinion I have about this album is second to this. Lowkey I think I would've enjoyed a lot of these songs more if they were a little shorter. Maybe it's just a grunge thing or maybe It's a me thing but a lot of the songs started to feel quite same-y especially around the 25 minute mark. I liked Black Hole Sun, Superunknown. The Day I tried to Live and Spoonman were alright- and man, I wish I was listening to Carter USM right about now. I wasn't a fan of mailman; I'm allergic to chuggy butt-metal guitars. A little disappointed Like Suicide doesn't sound like Suicide, I guess I was expecting too much. There’s only room for one Alan Vega on this list.

ngl this album really does not stand the test of time. every song just kinda keeps going. Black Hole Sun and Spoonman are fun and engaging but the rest of it was kinda just radio noise.

This was the first time I listened to Superunknown in its entirety, and at first I was a little excited because an album with such a high reputation has to be good! Pretty soon I noticed that it's not. There are a couple of decent songs on the album but the 70 minute runtime makes it feel monotonous, bloated and dull. Relatively polished production doesn't help either. At first I thought about giving it three stars, then two, but the more I think about this album, the closer it gets to one star. Better stop now.

God I miss the days of vinyl records. The invention of CDs was truly terrible, because it means that albums don't have to stop at the 45 minute mark. This woulda done so much better if it was condensed. It's got some nice tunes. Almost passes.
The album cover just about describes this album - indistinct screaming. Lots of tracks have heavy rock guitar solo sounds which I particularly dislike. There was a bit more variety than I feared when the opening track kicked off very noisily. Attempts were made at times to sound like Nirvana and some tracks were less of an assault on the ears than others. However, I suspect if you like this genre there are much better albums you could listen to.

Listening to this confirmed my impression of Soundgarden - they're very talented, but their music doesn't do tonnes for me. The album is too long and just feels a bit '90s rock by numbers' to me personally. Black Hole Sun is brilliant though and definitely stands out. 5/10
Yeah, the cover says it all. A dude with hyper-expressive, rock-style vocals yells at you for an hour straight. To make it worse, the band lets the guitars chug and solo in equal measure, and the drummer plays - like what? - 25 cymbals and 10 toms or so. Can we please have some goddamn subtlety for a change? No? Okay then. Thanks, I’ll pass.
in general I did not like this album. I would not willingly listen to it again but I would not rip it off of the turntable if someone else put it on. It is not a sound (voices/music) that I hate, I just did not find it interesting

Grunge was never really my thing, though one would think it would be. Cornell has a fantastic voice and this is a very solid hard rock record, I don't ever really have a bad time listening to it, but none of it particularly grabs me. My bad.

My 800th album and it could have been a lot better. This is another good example of the major disadvantage of CD’s. The temptation of some artists to fill the disc up with loads of padding instead of keeping it at under 40 minutes, the good old fashioned way. Heavy US grunge was never going to resonate with me however long I was expect to waste my time listening. Still could have been worse. It’s not hip hop (c)rap. 800 albums and my average star score is still 2.62. Not much scope now to getting that up to 3. So depressingly looks like this list was not meant for me. 2/5 12/3/26

Меня удивляет количество высших баллов этому альбому. Это сбивает с толку. Затянуто и однообразно, скучно, плоско. Первый интересный трек на альбоме - пятый по счету. В любом другом случае я бы выключил ещё на первой песне. Не переношу такую музыку, я знаю, всему виной нулевые с этим вездесущим звуком, ее повсеместное присутствие в фильмах, рекламе, на радио. Примерно так я себе представляю вкус Дина Винчестера. Музыка для мужиков в грязных джинсах и кожанке. Тут в отзывах упомянули Nickelback. Фу, действительно, похоже. Самый популярный трек - Black Hole Sun - хорош только в своих акустических отрезках. Вообще, кажется, альбом выиграл бы от отсутствия перегруза и гитарных риффов в большей части песен. Бесспорно, ребята - мастера, звук крутой, но пустой какой-то, все сливается воедино, но не в цельное произведение, а в кучу шума.

Love the time signatures of My Wave, the chorus of Head Down and the guitar solo in Like Suicide. Other than that it's so incredibly boring and somehow grating at the same time (courtesy of the singing style) - those three songs are the only things bringing the rating to a 2 (and JUST ABOUT).
Could have easily just played black hole sun and told me the rest of the album was just like that but worse. Would have saved me some time on a Tuesday.

Ah, 1994, l'année où le monde a décidé que porter des chemises en flanelle de bûcheron de Seattle était le comble du chic. Je bossais à la radio à l'époque, et je peux te dire que le programmateur musical avait dû faire un pacte avec le diable — ou avec A&M — parce qu'on a bouffé du "Black Hole Sun" jusqu'à la nausée. Alors, parlons-en de ce fameux "Superunknown" de Soundgarden, le quatrième pavé dans la mare des "quatre grands" du grunge. Le bouquin nous vend ça comme le "summum de leur carrière". Mouais, on sent surtout que Michael Beinhorn, le producteur, a voulu faire les choses en grand : une production épaisse, des tonnes d'overdubs, des effets dans tous les sens. Résultat ? Un truc qui pèse trois tonnes et qui, avec le recul, sent un peu trop la naphtaline des années 90. C'est marrant, le bouquin souligne leur "expérimentation diversifiée". Ils citent même "Half" et ses textures moyen-orientales pour dire qu'ils n'étaient pas comme les autres groupes de l'époque. Franchement, à mes oreilles de l'époque (et d'aujourd'hui), ça sonne surtout comme des types qui ont trop écouté Led Zeppelin en essayant de paraître "arty". Le côté "brooding Sabbath-esque", on l'entend, c'est sûr. Les riffs sont lourds, visqueux ("sludgy" comme ils disent), mais est-ce que ça transporte vraiment ? Le vrai problème, c'est la durée. 73 minutes. Putain c'est interminable, même l'éditeur du livre admet qu'un petit coup de ciseau n'aurait pas fait de mal. On sent que c'est un album fait pour les CD, cette époque maudite où les groupes se sentaient obligés de remplir chaque mégaoctet disponible sur la galette argentée. On nous ressort évidemment le tube "Black Hole Sun" et "Spoonman", les deux vaches à lait qui leur ont rapporté des Grammys et des chiffres de vente monstrueux. Je sauve le tube, parce qu'il faut admettre qu'en 1994, ce refrain avait un truc. C'était l'hymne des mécontents, la bande-son du désespoir d'une génération. Mais pour le reste ? "Fell On Black Days", "The Day I Tried To Live"... ça s'écoute, mais ça a quand même pris un sacré coup de vieux. Chris Cornell avait une voix incroyable, personne ne dira le contraire. Ses paroles bizarres, sa livraison impeccable... c'est ce qui tenait la baraque. Mais quand je compare ça à ce que j'écoutais vraiment en 94 — les trucs plus sombres, plus viscéraux — Soundgarden me paraissait déjà un peu trop "Rock FM déguisé". Bref, c'est un disque charnière, c'est le moment où le grunge est devenu une formule, un produit bien emballé par Michael Beinhorn. Pour moi, c'est un 2 sur 5, et encore, c'est parce que je suis de bonne humeur et que le tube me rappelle mes années radio. Soundgarden, c'était bien pour l'époque, mais aujourd'hui, ça ressemble à une vieille relique qu'on a peur de dépoussiérer de peur qu'elle ne tombe en miettes.

I like grunge, but how this lot became as big as they did (say compared to The Screaming Trees) is a mystery on the basis of this album.
Most albums could be cut to 25 minutes. This is a great example. Would be a ripper. Also, why do so many bands have to add a 7 minute last track like they're trying to do their own version of Desolation Row
A little piece of H. Land trivia: Black Hole Sun is my least favorite song, beating out Cotton Eyes Joe because it’s a full two minutes longer. When I saw the run time of this album, I slumped. But I made it through, and even turned it up real loud. There were about 2 minutes of this that I really liked, on My Wave and I think Head Down. Ranking this album is hard, because I’m just not into the sonic palette of grunge. Ultimately, it gets a two, because it’s definitely not worse than Aftermath, but I wouldn’t listen to either again.

I’m just not a very big rock girly. The album would’ve been amazing if I was into that sort of thing. The songs all sounded the same to me, but they were good songs. I could see myself turning this album on to impress someone else with really good music taste.

Big swing cock rock. I know it was sold as grunge in the day, but hard to hear huge differences from LA and hair metal bands of the same time. And there is nothing wrong with hair metal. It has the CD-era problem of too many songs: like 4 or 5 could be cut for a leaner meaner record. Glad they broke big from this, I guess
