Reviews (page 11 of 13)
This deserves more than a 3 but maybe not quite a 4 so it's a 3.5. Heavy and depressing metal is kinda epic.
Decent enough for an out of genre experience for me. Would Black Hole Sun again/10
Amazing soulful singing, heavy guitars, funky heavy drums.... And yet it's bloody boring for the most part. Draggggggy songs. They also love off time signatures
It was okay. Don’t hate any of the songs but didn’t love love them
Such iconic rock. Just not really my style. I appreciate the heaviness. And geez. The vocals are insane.
“Let me drown”, “Fell on black days” and “The day I tried to live” stand out as the best songs. I would compare it unfavorably to “Jar of Flies” or “Dirt” from roughly the same era.
Compared to other new stuff on the radio at the time, Soundgarden was clearly in the top 10%. But I have never found grunge that compelling. Great album, just not for me.
Just ok. A few catchy songs
Reminds me of working in the Blunsdon house kitchens. 3/5
I see why people like it but it’s not what I’m usually going to be reaching for.
It was okay, not really my style
This is tricky to rate for me because I feel like it was objectively good and well made, but subjectively I simply would never want to put this on. There is no "oh, I'm in the perfect mood for Superunknown by Soungarden today" in my existence.
Classic album from my youth. Great 90s rock/grunge album. Favorite tracks: Let Me Drown My Wave Black Hole Sun Spoon man The Day I Tried to Live
Good—Chris Cornell isn’t my favorite vocalist ever
Incredible voice. Didn't enjoy the music style as much. Of course BHS is a classic.
Good songs, I enjoyed the rock style. I liked The Day I Tried to Live best.
Not really my type. For some reason, I have never enjoyed Chris Cornell's voice, even though I reckon he has an amazing range and control. I did not like nor dislike this album, I just probabl won't listen to it.
Plage meg ikkje
There are some good moments but way too much of that slow heavy dirge material.
Wasn’t really giving to this, some OK songs
Slightly generic
Moments of greatness.
Nice sounding music. I like the singers voice with the music. not really listening to lyrics... half way in and still like their sound. its a got a lot going on at the same time but it works well together. black hole son was really good i remember that from the good old days. second half of the album was a little underwhelming. decent over all
Of all the grunge bands this is the most palatable to me, but really less than half of the album.
I expected to dislike this, knowing Soundgarden mainly from their radio hits, but it was actually a lot better than I expected. It's still not the kind of thing I'd go out of my way to listen to, but there are some decent tracks on here, especially the more upbeat ones. Liked: My Wave, Superunknown Didn't really like: Limo Wreck
save for a few great songs, this album is mostly alright. i liked the sound but it got a little old.
Cornell's voice is great, but some of the songs are flat and repetitive. The hit songs are good, but that's about it. 3/5 Would listen to the hits off this again
Decent, but weak latter half of the album + Spoonman - Overstays its welcome
Hadn't really heard of them before, it was OK, but is still wouldn't rush out to listen to it again.
Good album, not a sound I super love, but Black Hole Sun was really cool. Generally an album I would listen to again.
I’ve just begun my journey, and three albums in, this is the first one that I’ve actually heard many many (many) times. When this album came out, I was living in a two bedroom apartment in Atlanta, with a powerful speaker system, a bong, and new (now ex) wife. This album featured heavily in my life at the time. I had seen Soundgarden before their major label breakthrough success. On the Loud Love Tour, I stood right by a speaker and my ears rang obnoxiously for three days. I feared that it was permanent. So this was one of “those” albums—an album too inextricably bound to a long-ago life period to ever achieve any amount of distance from it. Their gestures towards dark psychedelia seem only half the way there. My guess is that Kim Thayil was the true head in the band, whereas the rest maybe were more a preponderance of beer drinkers. Their heavy, gloomy cock rock is when they gel as a convincing unit. But they really are a mix of the two. I just think they are better at straight heavy doomy rock than sonic exploration. Kim was always the most interesting element of the band with his raga-tinged solos. Head Down is their most on-the-nose psychedelic offering, but it really covers no new ground and is lyrically and musically obvious. Half is actually adventurous, but other than the sweet raga lick (it seems wasted here). It's not good. The singing is off key and by Ben Shepard. Limo Wreck might come as close to a satifying synthesis, but the chorus is not as strong as the verse, but the middle-end bit is pretty sick, with proggy changes. Seems scared to stay there though, and they pretty quickly return to the middling chorus for the end. Spoonman is kind of what they are best at. A sick, non 4/4 riff, slightly inane lyrics and Cornell caterwauling. Black Hole Sun, is impossible to get distance from. I really like it. It holds up, but, man, I've just heard it too much and in too many different contexts to actually know what I think. Kickstand is the most filler song on this album. Which is saying something given the vocals on Half. Never should have made it on. Pure cock rock, even if it had a little irony baked in. Fourth of July was my favorite cut on the album when it first came out, and probably still is. The mega-downtuned, distorted guitars grinding along was definitely the new idea of grunge before it broke big, and this song is a perfect example of this. Best lyrics, mood. Just want to bury my head in the speakers for this one. Just Like Suicide: good build and gnarly solo from Kim on this one. I thought I'd like this album more upon re-listen, but, alas, it is merely good, not great. Some really good songs and some that don't stick. Surprisingly weak choice for an opener given the better choices. This is definitely a bloated album that could have been much better through subtraction. The highs are pretty high, and the lows are meh. Stand outs: Fell on Black Days Black Hole Sun Spoonman The Day I Tried to Live 4th of July Just Like Suicide
If this was somewhat shorter I would have probably rated it higher. Get bored of it after 4-5 songs
Rockiger Soundteppich. Einige bekannte Songs (bspw. Fell in Black Days, Black Hole Sun, Spoonman).
Moments of absolute glee but it bored me otherwise. Chris Cornell’s voice is stunning on this record and Black agile Sun takes me right back to the 90s and being frightened watching the video on mtv and not sure exactly why. The rest came and went. It is the more polished end of my much loved genre, grunge. But I don’t love polish. I thought I’d like this more.
I do like this album! I wish I could give it a 3.5, but I’m gonna give it a 3.
wish this era of music clicked for me more, but still a fun album with some great high points but generally not for me, maybe I'll get there in future
I haven't listened to much Soundgarden, but was fairly skeptical going in. Black Hole Sun generally irritates me, and I didn't want to listen to an entire album of that sound. The rest of the album was...pretty good! I know that some people LOVE Soundgarden, but it didn't really grab me. I understand why people like them, but this is probably a one-time listen for me.
i consider myself a fan of early/mid-90s grunge, but this album just never clicked for me. to me it just feels dark and inaccessible, like it's that weird loner in the corner of the party that just truly Does Not Want to Be There. with that said, spoonman absolutely slaps. love that song. black hole sun is a classic too. but the rest? ehhh not for me favorites: spoonman (slaps), black hole sun (classic)
All wheat, all chaff.
black hole bum, more like
Chris Cornells voice is amazing wow. A lot of the songs felt very similar in terms of sound so I didn't find many of the songs very memorable but I liked it
Soundgarden is a band that I liked quite a lot in the past, but haven't listened to it since. And the ugly truth is that... I simply don't like it anymore. Black Hole Sun is still one of my favourite songs, but the rest of the album, or the rest of their discography is just simply tiring to listen. Chris Cornell's vocal is unique and very strong, but it gets so annoying after few songs. It's the same story with Audioslave, on the paper it looks like a great band, but I just can't listen to it at all. The music is also pretty tame and boring, unfortunately Soundgarden is rather low on my list of great grunge bands.
Ehhhh kinda just sound like the epitome of 90s dad rock. I swear the lead singer does the same voice Jack Black sings in sometimes. Album way too long. Good but mid
This is like the 90's version of Dad/boomer rock. It's ok. Some tracks have better vocal and musical production than others. Guitars are usually pretty good. Sometimes the singer's voice is good, but sometimes it's not very good. Not at the "Red Hot Chili Peppers" level, but slightly similar in that regard. Pretty musically inoffensive. A high 3/5
Brings back memories
Aika geneeristä raskaampaa, välillä ihan tarttuuvaakin. 3/5
Ugh. I know people already look forward to dissecting my opinions on crumby grunge bands, so here it goes ... ("this album sucks" - that's for you @jared) Chris Cornell (RIP), has / had such a distinct voice. I don't mind listening to it sprinkled here and there, but it harkens back to 80's poodle-farmer, hair rock. Honestly, 'Spoonman' (?) WTF is this song even about... the guy that plays the spoons or cooks his drugs in bent spoons, who gives a shit? This song rivals 'Closing Time' for dumbest song ever recorded. Let Me Down - Crack is whack and so are Whammy bars. Fell On Black Days - See Black Hole Sun Black Hole Sun - it's a great track ... MTV didn't think I could ever get tired of that mind melting video, but guess what ...? The Day I Tried to Live ... this is a really great song, big dicks straight up for this one. And on this topic, it's not cool for me to shit all over this album when I know that CC suffered from depression for most of his life and died by suicide. He was super talented and what I've read about him made it sound like he was kind of a reluctant celebrity just doing his thing. HIs thing / this thing Superunknown just didn't resonate with me when it was released.
A bit disappointed. I was expecting to like this a lot. It’s good, but the music overall is lacking something. Black Hole Sun, Fell On Black Days, and Spoonman stand out prominently. The rest are just fine. The album is long too at 70 minutes. Cut it down to <40 min including these three songs and it would be much improved. Chris Cornell’s voice is amazing though. It’s a shame the music doesn’t consistently match his talent.
Soundgarden is the third best of the four big Grunge invasion bands. They're just fine. I don't hate them, but I only really like a handful of their songs.
Good
helt ok!
Good music and the lead singer has a great voice - though not a genre I particularly care for and I wish it had been a shorter album
This was a good album but was simply too long. I thought I was on the last song and checked and there were still 4 songs left.
This album was 3-4 songs too long. I never understand the love for Soundgarden and I still think they’re a bit overrated, however some of this album are really cool, dark, and haunting, so I do have a better appreciation for the band.
I really liked it. Particularly enjoyed fell on black days, black hole sun, and 4th of July. Strong 3 but not enough to this album to warrant a 4.
Not as good as I was expecting. Their best songs are great but there’s a lot of filler.
Highlights: "Black Hole Sun," "Fell On Black Days," "Spoonman," "The Day I Tried to Live," "Mailman" One of the strongest 90s grunge albums. Picks up both Pixies' uneven measure schemes and Alice in Chains' southern gothic dissonance and dynamic extremes in vocal performance, while adding a more competent use (or affect) of Indian musical ideas than their 60s psych predecessors. The lead guitar is the weakest part of the album, but the rhythm section is excellent. Lyrically, Cornell has this pattern of being very coherent and incisive when he's writing something depressive, which is most of the time, but almost completely nonsensical when he's trying to be upbeat. In other words, the slow-burners tend to be just as strong as the rockers.
fine
Black Hole Sun is a really good song, but for me the rest of the album didnt reach the same quality.
Interesting fusion of genres
Soms verzandt het in herrie (Het repeterende My Wave is verschrikkelijk). Daar tegenover staan leuke muzikale vondsten als The Day I Tried To Live. Ik middel het uit op drie sterren.
3.6 + My opinion on this record hasn’t changed much - I love the radio hits (besides “Spoonman”) but at over 70 minutes it’s a slog. “4th of July” is a deep cut worth a revisit but I’d skip most of the others.
HL: “Black Hole Sun”, “Spoonman”, title track, “4th of July”, “Half” Had a similar problem with the previous album (Judas Priest), as it started to blend together & sound like Mainstream Rock Radio (there were times where I’d even reflex switch away from “Black Hole Sun”, it was playing so often). There’s definitely greatness to be found in several tracks, as well as Cornell’s performance
meh, black hole sunnnn
ok. to me its another grunge album that's fairly similar to alot that were around at that time.
Interesting rock. Quite heavy. Got to be somewhat angry or depressed to appreciate.
one of the best in grunge for sure. rip chris cornell
Another journey of "I know this band's name, but why? Surely not for being able to mimic what I remember Pearl Jam sounding like? Which of their songs was a hit?? Oh, this one! Yeah it's the best track on the record. Go figure!"
Soundgarden was never high on my list but not a bad album
I listened to this in art and yk what it wasn't bad. I hearted a couple of the songs. I can't say I loved it. it sounds like stuff that would be in a Shrek soundtrack. I would also like to comment that this webpage no longer displays the album cover fully for me on my laptop which is most dissapointing.
Chris Cornell did have a great voice.
Although not really my music I can appreciate why it is on the list.
meh
I don’t know - it’s an album I might have really liked if I had known at the time but now seems a bit unremarkable. Black Hole Sun is a banger though.
While it does have moments of brilliance, the album is too long for it's own good. Between the grunge albums that have legendary status, this is one of my least favorites.
Black Sabbath reinvented for the kids born in the 80's
creí que iba a ser peor 7/10
With how high my grunge score is, I expected to like this album more than I did. Perhaps I really just like Nirvana? I'll have to see what I think of some of the other big grunge albums still on here. A few songs piqued my interest a little here and there, but I didn't like anything on here nearly as much as Black Hole Sun. I was hoping I'd like this album more than I did. Oh well, I suppose. My favourite song was Black Hole Sun. Shocker, I know.
I don’t get the hype. Generally boring and sometimes annoying aside from Black Hole Sun. Such a dumb album cover too. 5/10
solid riffs but other than that meh
Veered between a 2 and a 3 on this, and ended up, because Day I Tried to Live and Black Hole Sun are such tunes, I gave them the benefit of the doubt. As 90s as a David Fincher movie.
Not for me but fine.
Never been a soundgarden fan, but I recognize Chris Cornell's voice anywhere. Much bigger fan of his Audioslave days. Even the soundgarden song that was made for 2012's Avengers didn't really capture me. Rock is a very delicate genre, one that can easily just sound like instruments playing. Truly great rock bands always have a special something, Tom Morello, Robert Plant, Eddie Van Halen, etc. You could argue that is Chris Cornell in this case, but the rest of his group felt like they were just playing some basic rock grooves. For the record, I'd take this album over so many other Brittish rock albums we have gotten. But, bring me an Audioslave album instead.
The album that broke them, thanks to the power of MTV but not their best - the two before it were better. And too long.
Aside from the biggest songs this is fairly bland rock IMO
The sonics, especially the drums, are magisterial but also happily broad. A few of the influences are spread too thin, turning the last twenty-plus minutes samey.
Better than I anticipated
It was alright. Probably something I'd listen to while working.
Some rougher grunge. Liked a couple of the songs.
The Led Zepplin of the 90's, probably better. Still don't like it.
Not bad, not something I would want but not bad.
Good playing. Chris Cornell’s voice is unique. A little too much 90’s for me. But, still a solid album
Elements of Led Zep, bit of Sabbath,, some grungy stuff. Loadsa massive riffs. Can't argue that Cornell has a great voice. A key 90s rock alt-album with a long running time. (77 min) and that feels too long. 3.5
I expected more from such a decorated album. RIP Chris Cornell.
Black Hole Sun is a classic (and an ear worm) and once I’ve heard it, I cannot stop hearing it in my head for the rest of the day. Soundgarden as a whole is a right time, right place kind of band for me. Yesterday was neither. I did try – morning, afternoon and evening. I appreciate that Chris Cornell was a towering talent and Soundgarden was the definitive voice of grunge for a generation. But once Black Hole Sun had played everything else paled by comparison. It is a great song though!
I’d never think of putting this album on for a listen but I’m glad I did.
A good example of the genre. Black Hole Sun is a genuine classic.
Always like Chris Cornell, sadly missed
Wasn’t too much into grunge when it was in vogue. Thought these guys were noisy and needed a weeding. Some of it is ok.
This has to be the worst Soundgarden album, made well after the best of grunge had faded. Louder Than Love is a much better listen.
Not really for me but it did not offend thine ears too much.
Soundgarden's 'Superunknown' pays homage to the classic rock sounds of the 70s with an array of immensely tight and equally wild grunge tracks within an ambitious runtime of 1 hour and 10 minutes. I'm somewhat surprised that this album came out in 1994. While Soundgarden can be pinpointed as one of the many Seattle grunge acts that attributed to the main stream success of the genre, they do shed their influences on their sleeve a little in contrast to Nirvana who had a clearly defined sound. Chris Cornell's hectic lead vocals combatted with wailing guitars and a heavy rhythm section sounds a lot like that of Led Zepplin and Black Sabbath. However, the songwriting chops are there to not become all that derivative. Track to track, this album is pretty fantastic. The track run from Mailman to Black Hole Sun is a goldmine for eccentric and pummelling grunge music. Those arpeggios on Black Hole Sun with that heavy tone are a thing of beauty. The Day I Tried to Live has this enthralling bass line that plays in an unorthodox time signature (I believe 7/8?) - the highlight of the album for me. As a collective album, this album falls flat on its face when it comes to diversifying its sound. For my liking, an album over an hour long simply cannot be one dimensional, and Soundgarden fail to keep me engaged as a result. Toward the end there are some duds, most notably Kickstand and Fresh Tendrils, which by this point in the record offer nothing new for the listener. If this album were say 45 minutes, I would've enjoyed this a whole lot more. Still, I completely see why this album is included in this list. I've given it a 3, but it's more like a strong 3 and a half
I would not have known a Soundgarden song if I’d tripped over one. Can’t say that I was a big fan of grunge. So this was a big surprise. There were only a couple of tracks I found just noisy & boring. The highlights for me were the Nirvana-like Fell On Black Days - loved the guitar in the second half of this; Black Hole Sun - can’t hear The Beatles influence in this or Head Down, as Wiki claims, but loved the melody of this song; Kickstand - a track that actually sounded like an old rock’n’roll song; and Like Suicide, particularly for the drumming & the pace of the tune. And the production was great. It sounded like a million.
this album is a solid effort for mid 90s grunge rock. it has aged a little bit tonally and sonically. it has some cheeseball progressions and solos sometimes, but mostly it holds up and a standard bearer for radio friendly edgy light grunge stuff. this is grunge to show your grandma. good on ya boys.
It was okay. Not really my thing.
Mailman could have been in Badmotorfinger and it’s a lot of what I think this album is missing. Head Down is my other favorite from this album. Black Hole Sun is a marginally interesting song that was made unlistenable over the course of the 10,000 times I heard it. Spoon Man sucked from the outset and I wish I could unhear it for every time I’ve heard it. Soundgarden could produce the dark, sludgy, brooding sound as well as any band and that’s what I really want to hear from them. This album isn’t bad, but it strays away from my opinion of the best version of this band. It’s lighter, poppier, less complex.
Prefs: Mailman, Superunknown, Black Hole Sun, Limo Wreck, 4th of July Moins pref: Spoonman
Quite an enjoyable listen, but could have done with a bit more shade and light. Black Hole Sun stands out, but lack of variety loses it a point
Wasn’t bad. I don’t think it’s my thing
Kind of fits into the unnamed category that includes Faith No More etc. I know they're good rock bands, but they inspire nothing in me.
Appreciated but not really enjoyed
A few good tunes on here including Fell on Black Days and Black Hole Sun. The rest is a little heavier than I prefer.
Good grunge album. A bit too long.
I was all ready to call this cruddy butt-rock. And it *is* butt-rock. But it isn't cruddy. It's heavy with pretension, yes. But it's also just plain heavy, though not in a thrashing guitar tornado kind of a way. In a, well, black hole kind of a way. Oppressive tone, foreboding feel, lugubriuous groove. And unlike most wailers, Chris Cornell sounds like he might actually have a soul. Hell, he may even be soulful. For what it's worth, I didn't want to turn it off once in 70 minutes. There's no way I can low-ball an album that does that.
Sounds like Seattle, in a good way.
Never listened to the whole album but have heard most of the songs. Chris Cornell's voice is instantly recognizable. Heavy, Grungy, Rock. Good times. Favorite songs: Black Hole Sun and Spoonman (which i always thought was "strongman" - lol)
Best Song: The Day I Tried To Live. I think Cornell really lets his voice run in this track. Obvious honorable mention to "Black Hole Sun", but that song suffers somewhat from being played so much. Worst Song: Half. Far too meagre a mostly instrumental track to have this late in the album. Overall: It's pretty good. Cornell's voice is the obvious star here, but everything surrounding it is good and grungy. The main knock against it is its length. At a little over an hour, I don't think the album tries enough different things to really stand out, and gets bogged down once you get past the hits.
An album that's back-loaded with the all the goods. 'Let Me Drown' is a groovy grunge opener, but it then all feels a bit filler until the crowd favourite 'Black Hole Sun' (whose music video now looks like a stoned A-level students films studies coursework) through to the muddy jewel in the crown: the sludgy, LSD inspired '4th of July' If, whilst listening to it, you felt "do you know what? This bass could be a bit heavier", then here's a tremendous doom-centric lockdown cover version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=badIQlcOLcg
Some good tunes on this and you can hear the similarities with desert stoner rock which I love. Much prefer Badmotorfinger, Rusty Cage being fantastic
This was one of the albums that was played on repeat during my teenage years - Black Hole Sun still a stand out track, and I vividly remember the music video making an impact at the time (in the golden days of MTV!!!)
I just didn’t *get* it. This was the first big challenge to my open mind—-I’ve never liked this kind of rock outside of like the best of Nirvana, the sound is *dated* to my ears, etc. I have to try it again—-I could loosely get why it was considered so good, but I couldn’t meet it.
Okay, never given this a chance before, but Black Hole Sun is an all timer, so I go in hopeful! It's definitely good. There are other good songs on here. The drumming is brilliant.definitely the most grooveable, rhythmic grunge act as a result. However, BHS aside, which could have another half hour as far as I'm concerned, a lot of the songs have said all they need to say within 3 or 4 minutes - but choose to carry on to 6 or 7. Probably a sad byproduct of the CD age - just because you can fill 80 minutes doesn't mean that you should... So overall, a really really good, but overlong album.
I can acknowledge Chris Cornell has an insane talent vocally, but I just can't really vibe with Soundgarden. Idk why, but I gotta just leave this album as a 3.
- the drums sound INCREDIBLE, super punchy without taking over the whole mix - every time i was iffy on a song, they won me over by the end - the riff at the beginning of 4th of july sounds like a hardcore band riff in a good way - feel like the album couldve been cut down to like 10/11 songs fav song - black hole sun - 4th of july least fav - mailman
Love his voice but that can not carry the whole album for me
Decent album, better EP. Tons of hits. Favorite tracks include "Back Hole Sun" and "The Day I Tried To Live". "Spoonman" was a massive radio hit, but the song is pretty terrible. Chris Cornell's voice isn't for me – the falsetto screams are a little too hair metal. They probably could have shortened this album by about 20-25 minutes. A 70 minute guitar-driven album gets boring.
Meh
Never really listened to much Soundgarden before this. But wow, Chris Cornell is one hell of a singer and a haunting lyricist. I’m not sure I’m going to be regularly returning to this album, but I feel good knowing I have them a chance and stuck through something I wouldn’t have sought out myself. The final track, “Like Suicide,” struck a nerve, especially knowing how his life ended a few years ago. I never really listened to the words of “Black Hole Sun,” but he says “No one sings like you anymore,” which is the name of his final album, comprised of cover songs. That was a great listen and I hope it makes this list. I feel like grunge takes on a whole new meaning with Soundgarden. They’re more arena rock than anything, in my opinion. Definitely grunge compositions, but the way they’re carried out production-wise gives them a Queen-ish tint. I almost feel like I need to hear it again in one sitting because I broke it up quite a bit. Really appreciated it regardless.
Foo fighter vibe. Toffe listen
Better than expected
Cover art 1/5
Black hole sun will always have a special place in my heart. Grew up listening to this album with my dad. Not very into this genre right now, but I appreciate it nonetheless.
listen
Great sound. A few songs stood out.
I was a fan of Soundgarden in the early days, but it all became a bit glossy and rock-god for my tastes.
This is good. I enjoy it, but I really don't what all the excitement was. Black hole Sun is good. Maybe I just suck at connecting with 90's music.
There's a lot of heavy stuff and early 90s stuff that I hate but this one is OK
pretty good but not Chris Cornells best album 3.5
If Nirvana is grunge's Michael Jordan, Soundgarden is the genre's Karl Malone. Their music is decent enough, maybe a handful of their songs hold up, but nothing legendary. This is probably as good as it gets for Soundgarden. Chris Cornell fronted bands with awful names. I hope that didn't add to his depression.
I can't really get behind this album. It's rock, and I suppose in some way it might be catchy to some, but there aren't a lot of songs I've heard that I think I should go back and listen to. It's a shame that Black Hole Sun is the one that gets all the airplay, as it's not the best song on the album. Perhaps the most Top40 radio appropriate I guess. Overall, better 90s rock bands if that's what you're craving. 3 stars - it's ok.
None of these grunge bands for me can compare to the songwriting of Nirvana. The guitars and vocals are great, but not a single song leaves an effect on me.
A very average album that lacked any highlights and suffers from a long length and messy sounding production/recording
Soundgarden passed me by in the 90s. Quite enjoyed this and would have liked it more at the time. Dece t bit of grunge rock though.
Listened to it already
Only listened to a couple. WAs okay
Enjoyed the listen, bit came off as a little generic. It's possible they pioneered that sound though >_< ???
This was good, but all I could think was audioslave is better, not sure I'd listen to again because of how much I prefer audioslave. Chris Cornell is a legend though RIP
Classic
couple classics but also repetitive
Not my jam, pero igual suenan bien casi siempre. RIP CC. 7/10
Liked the vocals, I don't care much for grunge. Still some great parts. Had only heard Black Hole Sun before this and really enjoyed it. Favorite Songs: Black Hole Sun, The Day I Tried to Live, 4th of July.
Meh.
in general not what I'd typically listen to but still, some gorgeous songs on this album
Identifying Soundgarden - Yep, it’s Soundgarden
I was kind of disappointed by this, Chris is obviously amazing but the rest of the band sounds in the pocket but kind of bored?
Grunge rock. Not bad song-by song, but long & samey...
Ostatak je just fine.
it was alright
whelmed. not under, not over. just flat out whelmed. veers a bit close to the one hit wonder album, but it's an ok album if you removed the hit. just ok.
This album was Superunknown to me. It should remain so. Well produced, but super generic. Again, listened in the car. I don't think I finished the album, so may revisit in the future with a better listening environment, but didn't stir any emotions.
I had only ever heard black hole sun, but there are some bangers on here. Good for getting stuff done - nice and rhythmic but dark too.
Solid 90s rawk, not super grungy but has all the classic elements of heavy distortion riffs, tons of toms, vaguely poignant lyrics, rock screams (CC's are pretty great though), and music videos with creepy bugs and other weird shit for good measure.
Not my usual type of music, but solid for that genre.
I've never really listened to Soundgarden but have always wanted to so I was quite looking forward to this. Aside from a couple of great tracks, though, this just sounded fairly generic (except Cornell's vocals, of course)
This album was almost superunknown ;) to me before listening to it today. Only really knew Black Hole Sun and Fell On Black Days. Must say it was a good listen. Had to take breaks as it's tough to listen in full in one attempt but the quality of songs on here is great. Especially liked the singles as well as some album cuts including Limo Wreck and 4th of July.
Reasonable 90s Seattle rock. Chris Cornell's voice is superb. RIP
Mediocre songs, not really different 3/5
Been a minute since I listened to this. Solid rock record through and through, with plenty of experimentation (off time shit, odd tunings) to keep things interesting. I dunno how much I care about Chris Cornell as a vocalist but the music’s cool.
So many great songs interspersed with a bit of filler.
As much as I love Chris Cornelll and his voice, listening reminded me how bloated this album. Interspersed with some brilliant tracks is quite a lot of dull songs. Still enjoyable but way down the list of albums I’d recommend for someone wanting to listen to Cornell
Averageunknown
enjoyed some tunes, rest was a bit backgroundy
7/10
Solid album
Great classic grunge album, with the classic Black Hole Sun. Not my type of music, a bit long-winded and I'm not a fan of Chriss Cornell, but great album non the less
OMG.
Love it
You can't argue with the fact that Chris Cornell has an incredible voice. And a handful of these songs are really engaging. But goddam, Spoonman just wipes it all out for me. Maybe that's because of my initial reaction to the song when I first heard it, which was "Is he singing about a guy who plays the spoons?" And it turned out he was. And it just seems too ridiculous to me - the song is so heavy, but it's about a guy playing spoons. Maybe it was even more ridiculous back in 1994, when there was so much heavy, serious music going on. I just couldn't dig it. Black Hole Sun holds up pretty well, though.
I guess I'd never listened to any sound garden as I did not know Cornell was the singer. I also didn't know that audioslave is most of ratm. So I learnt a lot?
Nice heavy crunchy riffs and Cornell’s vocals are solid but it’s very repetitive and very not a good Audioslave. There, I said it!
I thought I would (and wanted to) enjoy this more than I did but most of the songs didn't really grab me. Will give it another listen.
I like Soundgarden, but except for the hit "Black hole sun", I think this is a pretty normal grunge album. Reading the Wikipedia article, I realize the importance of the album for Soundgarden history, but the songs themselves are fine and nothing more, nothing special.
1991 rock. Three big songs
ok. 3. not offensive. not transformative.
Grunge
Not a big fan of 90s American Hard Rock. Not a bad Grunge record.
Reasonable rock album, but not much in the way of standout songs to keep you engaged.
But typically a grunge guy, but this works.
Good album. Had a darker feel than I’m used to. Enjoyed black hole sun of course.
Har svårt för soundgarden. Deras singlar gillar man men resten är svårlyssnad
Not for me, but I guess it was a good album?
A lot of modern rock. noisy rock if that makes sense? Nice but a bit loud.
Was it music? Or was it just...noise?
Some amazing tracks (Blackhole Sun remains one of my all time favourites) however it's overly long and a bit one note.
As much as I love Chris Cornelll and his voice, listening reminded me how bloated this album. Interspersed with some brilliant tracks is quite a lot of dull songs. Still enjoyable but way down the list of albums I’d recommend for someone wanting to listen to Cornell
Those bloody foxes have been making all sorts of ungodly sounds in my garden of late!
6.5
I really don't love soundgarden but I fully get the appeal after listening to this album! It was interesting and it had a really cool perspective, so I liked it.
02/08 - Yesterday I worked on finishing up detail development in the Drum Storage building and setting up an area 1 RCP for the manufacturing building. Although im not one for metal music, I thought Soundgarden was definitely an exception with there cross-over metal/alternative sound. I actually really enjoyed listening to this album and had it on repeat for about half the day. My favorite songs were Black Hole Sun and Spoonman.
Disappointed, was expecting more tunes like Black Hole Sun but only a couple of decent tunes for me. 2* would be harsh however
stoner rock vibes, good mixing
Pretty good for grunge, never been much of a fan though.
Another album that was really much too long for my liking, I can only take about 45 minutes of the machine I’m supposed to be raging against
A slightly more interesting version of Nirvana.
It's fine, I guess? I don't think it's a masterpiece or anything like some reviewers seem to think, but it's certainly listenable. Maybe you had to be there, I don't know.
Better the second time
Good album, just not what I was feeling at the time. I think 3/5 is a bit harsh, but here we are.
Black Hole Sun = Tune!
yeah, i mean...i was there for the 90s. this is about how grunge sounded back then. nothing special about it, though, is the thing. just...there.
Ok
Grunge can be good but most of the time it just sounds like monotonous noise where all instruments and voice get lost in a jumble of sounds. The notable exception on this album being of course Black Hole Sun, where the musical arrangement is noticeably more "pop"
skipping this one. liked this band in 4th grade and don't feel like i need to go back
He dicho!
fresh tendrils
Wasn't feeling like this kind of album when listening to it so impacted the score
I’ll have to listen more. Some days yes some days no
Black Hole Sun just sounds very different to the rest of the album. Every song is a rock marathon... Must have a guitar solo to make the song 6+ mins. The guitar work is pretty incredible, but just gets redundant when every song does it. I love the drummer as well.
The older I get, the faster this style gets old when I give it a listen. It was key pop of my heyday as a creature of my culture, masquerading as something non-mainstream. Black Hole Sun is an amazing song though.
Soundgarden is obviously really good. Just not exactly my flavor. Fell on Black Days and Black Hole Sun can't be skipped, though.
Typical modern rock, lots of radio hits. Spoonman was the track I enjoyed most.
not something I would have listened to without 1001 albums. But kinda nice.
It’s ok. Not great
a classic grundge album
I'm not sure I was ever a big fan of Soundgarden. Cornell's voice is awesome, but aside from Black Hole Sun and Spoonman, I'm not sure how much I like this.
bit heavy for me
1994. Key Songs: Spoonman, Black Hole Sun
I thought this was a pretty average grunge album. It had some nice moments that I connected with, but overall I found it a little dull and repetitive.
5/10 - reminiscent of a cheap Foo Fighters/Queens of the Stone Age, begins to drag and sounds the samey towards the end
To me, sounds like a GTA radio music. Soundgarden works in that kind of scenarios but I would never really reach for them when searching for what to play.
Every interminable intro was painful. Not my jam.
Favorite songs, Black Hole Sun and Head Down. 2 stars
Black hole sun is good?
dnf
Not for me
The only reason this didn't get 1 star is because of "Black Hole Sun," an oasis in a desert of grunge.
songs sound pretty similar to each other, can not really relax listening to this
Meh... The actual riffs are OK. But most of the songs are too long without much happening (which is not bad per se if I dig the vibe, which I don't feel here), and obviously the whole album is much too long without enough variation. Also I'm not a fan of "grungy" vocals, what most people see as a strength of this album. Of the many many tracks I only really liked "Mailman" and "Black Hole Sun". 2/5 - below average
Black Hole Sun and Spoonman are good. The rest is pretty forgettable.
Classic butt rock
Knew some, but wouldnt really listen to 4/10
+ Valt toch een beetje tegen
Niet echt mn ding
legal, mas só gostei de duas músicas
Let Me Down - 3 My Wave - 3 Fell On Black Days - 3 Mailman - 2 Superunknown - 3 Head Down - 2 Black Hole Sun - 1 Spoonman - 2 Limo Wreck - 2 The Day I Tried To Live - 2 Kickstand - 1 Fresh Tendrils - 2 4th Of July - 2 Half - 1 Like Suicide - 2
Listening to the entire album hasn't changed my opinion on the songs from it whatsoever. I kinda like Black Hole Sun and Spoonman, and that's it. Nothing is different now. I mean...yeah. I've had too many 2s or 1s in a row. Can my next album be something really good, please?
i’m a fan of psychedelic rock so every time it wasn’t that i was a bit bored. perhaps it was the fault of my environment that i give this low stars. i was playing minecraft on PS3 while listening so it didn’t really fit the mood. i just found the whole thing quite same and boring. my favorite was the final track, like suicide, the only one i listed to twice. i also enjoyed fell on black days. both of them are a bit more slow so i likey likey yum yum my least favorite could honestly be any of the other ones. it’s not egregiously bad, it’s just all the same.
I'm not a big grunge fan, It's one of those genres which I find is improved when you add "inspired" to the end of it. The real reason I'm writing this review is because the titular track "Superunknown" has an almost identical guitar/drum section to "Lean On Me I Won't Fall Over" by Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine. I can't find anyone else who is pointing this out, the albums both came out within a few months of each-other which makes me think this isn't a case of one sampling the other and instead either sampling a third older riff or maybe just some insane luck. Anyway I feel like I'm going crazy here, they're almost identical. Every other opinion I have about this album is second to this. Lowkey I think I would've enjoyed a lot of these songs more if they were a little shorter. Maybe it's just a grunge thing or maybe It's a me thing but a lot of the songs started to feel quite same-y especially around the 25 minute mark. I liked Black Hole Sun, Superunknown. The Day I tried to Live and Spoonman were alright- and man, I wish I was listening to Carter USM right about now. I wasn't a fan of mailman; I'm allergic to chuggy butt-metal guitars. A little disappointed Like Suicide doesn't sound like Suicide, I guess I was expecting too much. There’s only room for one Alan Vega on this list.
Heureusement y avait black hole sun
Just not my thing I think
dnf'd, not for me
Great riffs. Great tones. Great drums. Not great melodies. Not great vocals. Not great song writing.
Not a fan
No that into Grunge, few good ones but overall not my thing ! Cover : Good one !
Not my fav stylee but it’s fun
Personal Enjoyment overall: medium to low. Did not finish. Replay? no Stand out: Black Hole Sun
#345/1001. Oh, it's grunge and it has black hole sun and ond funny song.
Two stars meh. Should be my kind of thing, but I'm not vibing with this. The guitars are great. I just can't with the vocals. The songs don't feel particularly cohesive. i) heard before: no ii) would i buy a copy: no iii) based on this album, do i want to check out the band? no. 1. let me drown: 3 2. my wave: 3 3. fell on black days: 2 4. mallman: 2 5. superunknown: 2 6. head down: 3 7. black hole sun: 4 8. spoonman: 2 9. limo wreck: 2 10. the day i tried to live: 2 11. kickstand: 3 12. fresh tendrils: 2 13. 4th of july: 1 14. half: 1 15. like suicide (album ver): 1
would give it more stars if i were a divorced dad
not my thing
ngl this album really does not stand the test of time. every song just kinda keeps going. Black Hole Sun and Spoonman are fun and engaging but the rest of it was kinda just radio noise.
Muy pesado para mi gusto
Heavy guitar
This was the first time I listened to Superunknown in its entirety, and at first I was a little excited because an album with such a high reputation has to be good! Pretty soon I noticed that it's not. There are a couple of decent songs on the album but the 70 minute runtime makes it feel monotonous, bloated and dull. Relatively polished production doesn't help either. At first I thought about giving it three stars, then two, but the more I think about this album, the closer it gets to one star. Better stop now.
idk why but I’ve always really struggled with soundgarden/audioslave - and it’s not cos of Chris Cornell, i don’t hate his voice. Just the style I think. Bit samey 5 / 10 Best track: Black Hole Sun, Spoonman was alright too
depresión
I do not like screaming guitars but he has a great voice
This is so ‘90s [derogatory]
Really just felt like the one good song. Others not my vibe
Lacking subtlety
Should have stuck to Bond movies. Dull and long
didn’t get into it
God I miss the days of vinyl records. The invention of CDs was truly terrible, because it means that albums don't have to stop at the 45 minute mark. This woulda done so much better if it was condensed. It's got some nice tunes. Almost passes.
The album cover just about describes this album - indistinct screaming. Lots of tracks have heavy rock guitar solo sounds which I particularly dislike. There was a bit more variety than I feared when the opening track kicked off very noisily. Attempts were made at times to sound like Nirvana and some tracks were less of an assault on the ears than others. However, I suspect if you like this genre there are much better albums you could listen to.
Not bad
This was another 90s throwback, but this style of music is just not for me. I find it really grating and loud to listen to. Just not my favourite.
Listening to this confirmed my impression of Soundgarden - they're very talented, but their music doesn't do tonnes for me. The album is too long and just feels a bit '90s rock by numbers' to me personally. Black Hole Sun is brilliant though and definitely stands out. 5/10
Yeah, the cover says it all. A dude with hyper-expressive, rock-style vocals yells at you for an hour straight. To make it worse, the band lets the guitars chug and solo in equal measure, and the drummer plays - like what? - 25 cymbals and 10 toms or so. Can we please have some goddamn subtlety for a change? No? Okay then. Thanks, I’ll pass.
in general I did not like this album. I would not willingly listen to it again but I would not rip it off of the turntable if someone else put it on. It is not a sound (voices/music) that I hate, I just did not find it interesting
It's okay, but I am not really into noisy, grunge, type of music.
Prefiero está banda que Audioslave..
Grunge was never really my thing, though one would think it would be. Cornell has a fantastic voice and this is a very solid hard rock record, I don't ever really have a bad time listening to it, but none of it particularly grabs me. My bad.
